Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: But we have an incredible guest, Ed McCaffrey, coach McCaffrey,
- 0:06Speaker 1: CMC's father, my very first action figure as a kid.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Let's give it up for Ed.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Let's go ahead.
- 0:14Speaker 3: That's a selfless guy, a selfless guy. First question, First question,
- 0:19Speaker 3: who's your favorite kid of all of them?
- 0:21Speaker 2: You know, very it varies by the day. My wife
- 0:23Speaker 2: and I joke around about it. It's whoever happens to
- 0:26Speaker 2: call us back the quickest on that particular really so
- 0:28Speaker 2: you're kind of liked, or whoever's got something pretty important
- 0:31Speaker 2: coming up. So last week it was Luke my sign.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He's played in the senior balls, getting ready for the combine.
- 0:35Speaker 2: This week, Christian's got a pretty good game coming up here, right,
- 0:38Speaker 2: Who's consistently at the top of the charge? It varies, man,
- 0:42Speaker 2: it varies. You know, obviously you love all your kids
- 0:44Speaker 2: the same, but there's some that you're more happy with
- 0:46Speaker 2: in any particular point in time. And so right now
- 0:48Speaker 2: they're all good. Yeah, they're on the good list right now.
- 0:52Speaker 3: You gotta love that, dude. It's got to be hard
- 0:53Speaker 3: juggling those three kids at all times.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You got four, right, you got four brothers. Max is
- 0:58Speaker 2: the oldest. Then you got Christian. Well, I was trying
- 1:00Speaker 2: to follow your math. Five plus eight is thirteen, and
- 1:02Speaker 2: now I thought, maybe there's something to your math. Do
- 1:04Speaker 2: you want kids? But do you want to hear that?
- 1:05Speaker 2: You know occasion I have forgotten one of my kids
- 1:07Speaker 2: in the past, accidentally left him in the car for
- 1:09Speaker 2: a couple of seconds forgetting they were falling asleep in
- 1:11Speaker 2: the car seat, lost him in a store one time.
- 1:14Speaker 3: So hey, you know all this forgive I appreciate that, yeank,
- 1:16Speaker 3: you do. You know why they were talking about the number.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Thirteen because that's how many years I played in the NFL.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Of course, it's not about me. Now what thirteen? It's
- 1:25Speaker 2: a good reference for it. So you know brock Pritty's number.
- 1:27Speaker 2: What are we talking? I'm trying to follow your math.
- 1:29Speaker 3: So the whole conspiracy obviously, you know Taylor Swift, you
- 1:31Speaker 3: know she is dating somebody on the opposing team that.
- 1:34Speaker 2: You're so aware of it. I've been yeah, I've heard reports.
- 1:36Speaker 3: The Swifties have like come up with this crazy conspiracy
- 1:39Speaker 3: theory that Taylor Swift's favorite number, well they know her
- 1:42Speaker 3: favorite number is thirty, right, And obviously super Bowl fifty
- 1:44Speaker 3: eight five plus eight is thirteen. Forty nine ers four
- 1:47Speaker 3: plus nine US thirteen.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Wow, forty nine Ers are.
- 1:49Speaker 3: The one one seed. Chiefs are the three seed thirteen.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Taylor Swift, if she goes to the game, it'll be
- 1:56Speaker 3: her thirteenth appearance at a Chiefs game. If she makes
- 1:59Speaker 3: it back from Tokyo to Vegas for the Super Bowl,
- 2:02Speaker 3: it's roughly a thirteen hour flight, right, so it's kind
- 2:05Speaker 3: of right. A lot of things are stacked.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Was there a movie I don't think it was thirteen?
- 2:09Speaker 2: Was it twenty three with Jim Carrey? Remember that there
- 2:12Speaker 2: was a movie where they started connecting the dots. It's like, well,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you know, twelve and then eight one bagel and that's thirteen.
- 2:17Speaker 2: And they just started making all these random connections that
- 2:20Speaker 2: mean absolutely nothing.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's fun to talking about nothing. The thirteen
- 2:24Speaker 1: killer is wearing a nine ers.
- 2:26Speaker 2: I know a lot of hotels don't have a thirteenth floor.
- 2:28Speaker 3: That's true, right, which is odd too, because really, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, if you.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Go one know there's a thirteenth floor. Yes, use it
- 2:34Speaker 2: for storage or something. It's there.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It's a whole it's a whole thing. Have you what's
- 2:39Speaker 3: your thought process? On Taylor Switch right now, you anti
- 2:41Speaker 3: Taylor swip.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Because of the week. You know, my wife is like
- 2:43Speaker 2: her biggest fan, and she nobody has supported her relationship
- 2:46Speaker 2: with Travis Kelsey more than my wife defending defending her
- 2:49Speaker 2: and Travis. To people who are the football people that
- 2:52Speaker 2: don't want to mix entertainment and football, I'm like, look,
- 2:54Speaker 2: football is entertainment, it's live entertainment, it's real. But you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: those two worlds have collided and there's no going back back.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And it looks like they're happy and healthy. Like I'm
- 3:02Speaker 2: in Andy Reid's camp when it comes to that they're
- 3:04Speaker 2: happy and healthy. More power to them. But Lisa has
- 3:07Speaker 2: so many Taylor Swift songs on her playlist when she
- 3:10Speaker 2: goes jogging every day, and actually bought this piece of
- 3:13Speaker 2: artwork from Steven Wilson, this really cool artist that she likes.
- 3:16Speaker 2: There's a whole Taylor Swift piece of art that hangs
- 3:18Speaker 2: in our piano room. But you know, not listening to
- 3:21Speaker 2: as much music this week, I'm gonna put it on
- 3:23Speaker 2: the kabash for about a week, your wife, and then
- 3:25Speaker 2: we'll go right back to listening to it. Look, she's
- 3:27Speaker 2: one of the greatest artists in the world. She puts together.
- 3:29Speaker 2: She's great for the end of one week bend. Is
- 3:32Speaker 2: that too much toask? Is that wrong?
- 3:33Speaker 3: If you're Swift fan, I bet you they say yes.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Is it okay?
- 3:37Speaker 1: Is your wife aware that the government kind of set
- 3:39Speaker 1: up their relationship?
- 3:40Speaker 2: She is not aware. She is not. She is not
- 3:42Speaker 2: aware of that conspiracy. The guys are into the conspiracy theory.
- 3:45Speaker 2: So it's just.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Conspiracy theories like the whole idea behind them, like people
- 3:49Speaker 3: who truly buy in, and it's like there's lizard people
- 3:51Speaker 3: down in the sewers of Washington, d C. To me,
- 3:54Speaker 3: I'm not like subscribing to that. I'm not like buying
- 3:56Speaker 3: in buying the T shirts. But I do love the conversation.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I love the idea of being JFK big Foot inside Bigfoot,
- 4:03Speaker 3: not a level, was an inside job. It's like, oh
- 4:05Speaker 3: my god, let's dive into this a little bit. I
- 4:07Speaker 3: love to hear people passionately tell me why this is
- 4:10Speaker 3: a real thing and then low key by it towards
- 4:11Speaker 3: the end.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I think I saw one of those lizard people in
- 4:14Speaker 2: a field trip I took in eighth grade, so there
- 4:16Speaker 2: may be truth to that one. Yeah, live in Colorado.
- 4:20Speaker 2: You go if you walk through the airport, Oh yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 2: through the IA in Colorado. They brack about it. They
- 4:25Speaker 2: really little weird sculptures and signs on kind of shaped
- 4:30Speaker 2: like a whale. There's talking about underground.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean, there's like the conspiracy because they have all
- 4:35Speaker 1: that land surrounding the air Yeah, what do they do
- 4:37Speaker 1: out there?
- 4:37Speaker 3: Millionaires A bunch of billionaires own real estate out there,
- 4:40Speaker 3: and it's said that they have bunkers in that area.
- 4:42Speaker 2: It's pretty bizarre when you start to look at some
- 4:44Speaker 2: of the artwork and some of the science, and they
- 4:45Speaker 2: kind of have embraced it. We got our evil blue
- 4:47Speaker 2: horse with the red eyes outside the airport. Have you
- 4:49Speaker 2: seen that thing? It's kind of cool, but you're like,
- 4:51Speaker 2: is there something to it or not? Maybe they're like
- 4:53Speaker 2: just trying to be so obvious about it, but it
- 4:55Speaker 2: really exists. I don't know.
- 4:56Speaker 1: As a as an athlete growing up, you have the
- 5:00Speaker 1: thirteen year career that you have, like when you're younger
- 5:03Speaker 1: and you talk about, you know, I want to have sons.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I want them to be like me. I want to
- 5:07Speaker 1: be athletes. And now it's transpired. See them, see we
- 5:11Speaker 1: know what he's you just mentioned Luke being at the
- 5:13Speaker 1: Senior Bowl getting ready for a combine. You have to
- 5:15Speaker 1: be you have to feel good, fully grown, knowing that
- 5:19Speaker 1: you're offspring are basically succeeding your journey.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Yeah. You know, as a parent, you know you want
- 5:25Speaker 2: your kids to be happy and healthy, whether they play
- 5:27Speaker 2: football or do anything else, you want them to be
- 5:29Speaker 2: happy and healthy, chase their dreams. It just so happens.
- 5:32Speaker 2: All four of our boys ended up playing football, and
- 5:35Speaker 2: it's been Christian's dream to play in the NFL and
- 5:37Speaker 2: then eventually playing a Super Bowl his whole life. So
- 5:40Speaker 2: as a parent, whether you're kid's a musician or an artist,
- 5:43Speaker 2: or they're into they're an engineer or whatever they do, right,
- 5:46Speaker 2: you just want them to be happy. And so I'm
- 5:48Speaker 2: happy because he's happy.
- 5:49Speaker 3: It seems like that's a very well polished piece answer. Yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 3: that you would give to anybody who's having it. Gets Hey,
- 5:55Speaker 3: as long as they're happy and healthy, they can do
- 5:56Speaker 3: whatever they want. But based on our conversation with Christian,
- 5:59Speaker 3: it seemed like it was football or nothing.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Really, you heard the story, so was in football or nothing? No, Look,
- 6:06Speaker 2: we always in the jeans story, we always ask them
- 6:09Speaker 2: to I don't even have heard this. Whatever they're doing,
- 6:13Speaker 2: be the best at that, right. We're big and like,
- 6:15Speaker 2: you are what you do, right, and if you do something,
- 6:18Speaker 2: you are how you do it. So if you're going
- 6:19Speaker 2: to do something, do it to the best of your ability.
- 6:21Speaker 2: So we've always emphasized that. But it didn't have to
- 6:23Speaker 2: be football. Could have been anything, Like there was a
- 6:25Speaker 2: couple of times where maybe they wanted to take a
- 6:27Speaker 2: season off of not playing a sport, and we're like, great,
- 6:29Speaker 2: get a job. I don't care what you do. Get
- 6:30Speaker 2: a job, Join the chess club. I don't anything you
- 6:33Speaker 2: want to do. But you're not just gonna sit around
- 6:35Speaker 2: doing nothing. So you know you are what you do.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Go do something. When you do it, be the best
- 6:38Speaker 2: you can. When you play a team sport, no matter
- 6:40Speaker 2: what it is, you got other people that are depending
- 6:42Speaker 2: on you. And I think those are good lessons when
- 6:43Speaker 2: you're young.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Yeah, but the approach of which I mean Christian he
- 6:47Speaker 3: did bring up you get you get tackled by.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Your jersey ground rounded that's place safety.
- 6:57Speaker 3: He told the stories of you walking on the woods
- 6:58Speaker 3: and finding a crushed soda can and coming back and
- 7:00Speaker 3: be like, hey, what do we got here.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I'm sure everyone's been embellished. Man, my kids tell stories
- 7:06Speaker 2: about me. I don't know how much of it's true
- 7:08Speaker 2: or not. I hope most of it is not true.
- 7:10Speaker 2: But look, you know it's like, hey, the carbonation while
- 7:13Speaker 2: you're playing, and sugary drinks. You know, just limit them
- 7:16Speaker 2: during the season before you play a game. Tape in
- 7:19Speaker 2: the jersey. Like horse collar used to be a thing,
- 7:21Speaker 2: there was no horse collar. That was just a tackle.
- 7:22Speaker 2: People used to grab you by your jersey and drop
- 7:25Speaker 2: on the back of your legs. That's a dangerous play.
- 7:26Speaker 2: They outlawed it in the NFL. Right, they're even talking
- 7:29Speaker 2: about having that drop tackle hip drop right. So for me,
- 7:32Speaker 2: it was player safety. I saw a kid in the
- 7:34Speaker 2: little league get hurt pretty bad. Someone grabbed the back
- 7:37Speaker 2: of his jersey and then body dropped on the back
- 7:39Speaker 2: of his legs, broke the kid's leg. And I'm like,
- 7:41Speaker 2: I don't know what that happened to my kid. You
- 7:42Speaker 2: know what, from now on, you're gonna have your jersey
- 7:44Speaker 2: tape down. You will never get jersey tackle. And if
- 7:47Speaker 2: you ever do, you know you're gonna hear about it
- 7:48Speaker 2: from me. But I'm the one taping it grounded. Do
- 7:50Speaker 2: you ever? Do you ever get your jerseys tape? You
- 7:51Speaker 2: got them taped right right, so you know the advantage
- 7:54Speaker 2: of having your jersey tape and a linemen. You don't
- 7:56Speaker 2: want guys grabbing you and you don't get to get
- 7:58Speaker 2: beat But when you're a running back or a ball carrier,
- 8:00Speaker 2: you don't want to get grabbed and tackled from behind
- 8:02Speaker 2: him potentially hurt. But if you've ever watched your equipment
- 8:06Speaker 2: manager have to tape your pads where I hope you
- 8:08Speaker 2: thanked him because it's a thankless job. It is not
- 8:10Speaker 2: fun two way tape in a jersey, And I did
- 8:12Speaker 2: it for all four of my boys all the time.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Did you ever? I think I swear to you seared
- 8:17Speaker 2: many more touchdowns because of that, because I countless clips
- 8:19Speaker 2: of people trying to grab for the jersey and slipping on.
- 8:21Speaker 2: You're the reason for their success, not at all, did
- 8:23Speaker 2: you ever? But I was the reason they didn't get
- 8:25Speaker 2: jersey tackled? Yeah? Did they?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Did they ever get grounded for getting jersey tackled?
- 8:29Speaker 2: I think Christian did once? Yeah, or at least seriously reprimanded.
- 8:33Speaker 2: And then he reprimanded.
- 8:35Speaker 3: He told me right home, no ac well during the
- 8:37Speaker 3: summer and no speaking windows.
- 8:40Speaker 2: It was one of those like once we got in
- 8:41Speaker 2: the car, I didn't have to say anything. He already knew, right,
- 8:45Speaker 2: there was a couple I didn't even say a word.
- 8:46Speaker 2: We just drove home in silence.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Hey, that's such a that's a good dad.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know has a dad too. Like if they
- 8:52Speaker 1: played baseball, say, hey, no swimming on game day. Yeah,
- 8:55Speaker 1: all those little things you're not allowed to do.
- 8:57Speaker 3: And you so, I mean, obviously you play thirteen years
- 8:59Speaker 3: in the n FELL. You were known for being like
- 9:02Speaker 3: one of the greatest blocking wide receivers of all time,
- 9:04Speaker 3: a tough guy that would lay out over the middle
- 9:06Speaker 3: make acrobatic catches. When you start having sons, is there's
- 9:11Speaker 3: like a thought process of like do I need to
- 9:14Speaker 3: instill this type of toughness in them or they come
- 9:16Speaker 3: out of the womb fighting.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Well, Luckily, I think that was just their their mentality.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Early on, they were serious competitors. They competed with each other.
- 9:23Speaker 2: I think it's good to have four brothers in the
- 9:25Speaker 2: same house, so they compete with each other, they compete
- 9:27Speaker 2: with their friends, and then in games. Yeah, they were
- 9:29Speaker 2: super competitive. Lisa, my wife, super competitive. She was an athlete,
- 9:33Speaker 2: and you know it just again, it's just if you're
- 9:35Speaker 2: gonna do something, be the best you can at it, right,
- 9:37Speaker 2: Why go through the motions? And so they were always
- 9:40Speaker 2: kind of wired that way. It was expected of them.
- 9:42Speaker 2: But I really never had to nudge him too much
- 9:44Speaker 2: in terms of being competitive.
- 9:45Speaker 3: There was never a moment they like stubbed their tone
- 9:47Speaker 3: and you're like, come on, man, you're better than this.
- 9:49Speaker 2: They're crying.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Oh, I have a six year old daughter and she
- 9:53Speaker 3: stubs her toe and I have that feeling.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, look at it's fine.
- 9:56Speaker 3: And I don't say that out loud, but I feel
- 9:58Speaker 3: it internally.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I take it. I stubbed my toe in my hotel
- 10:01Speaker 2: room on the table, and I thought it broke my toe,
- 10:03Speaker 2: and I was giving myself that talk. Yeah, yeah, dude,
- 10:05Speaker 2: it's all right. You played them in the NFL. You're
- 10:07Speaker 2: tougher than this. Stop winding over your stub toe. But
- 10:10Speaker 2: I think I might have broke it for real. Right now,
- 10:13Speaker 2: you've a broken could be broken. Yeah, I don't you know.
- 10:15Speaker 2: You you walk it off, man, Gotta watch what you do.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Ladies, gentlemen, we interrupt this episode to bring you a
- 10:20Speaker 3: ad read, and that ad read is twisted tea. Twisted

- 10:31Speaker 3: carbonation what makes it easy to drink all day long.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Twisted tea feels fun, celebrates extreme fandom on game day,
- 10:39Speaker 3: especially during the playoffs, and now that this is being
- 10:43Speaker 3: filmed before the big game, after the big game as well.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Just because the football season the end doesn't mean you
- 10:46Speaker 3: can't have a nice littlewisted tea in your mouth. Twisted
- 10:49Speaker 3: tea is a perfect, perfect alcohol beverage for game day,
- 10:53Speaker 3: whether tail getting in a parking lot, watching at a bar,
- 10:55Speaker 3: or watching with friends at home. Dude, Twisted tea is
- 10:58Speaker 3: there to turn up your game day. That thing twisted.

- 11:04Speaker 3: tell a friend, be your friend, and the opposite words
- 11:07Speaker 3: back to the episode.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Did you actually go and pick up? Would you go
- 11:11Speaker 1: and pick up Christian and your boys like during school
- 11:13Speaker 1: to get for them to get an IV?
- 11:15Speaker 2: Yeah? A lot's been made about this whole IV thing.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah I did. Yeah, well, but not every game, So
- 11:23Speaker 2: I did it for night game. So the first high
- 11:25Speaker 2: school game they played at night, right, Can you guys
- 11:29Speaker 2: remember back in high school wasn't that long ago? Right?
- 11:31Speaker 2: You got to actually go to class, right, Like, you're
- 11:34Speaker 2: up at like six in the morning. You're lucky to
- 11:35Speaker 2: eat something before you leave the house. You're on your
- 11:38Speaker 2: feet all day, you're eating cafeteria lunch. Then you got
- 11:40Speaker 2: another three four hours and then you don't come home
- 11:42Speaker 2: after school. You really don't have a proper dinner, and
- 11:45Speaker 2: you're on your feet all day, going to class and
- 11:47Speaker 2: walking around. Like can you imagine the NFL, Like, hey,
- 11:49Speaker 2: put in eight hours and then let's go play the game. Now,
- 11:51Speaker 2: we don't do that, right, We're in the NFL. It's
- 11:53Speaker 2: all about ball. So at night, a lot of the
- 11:56Speaker 2: kids on the team would cramp up like they're playing
- 11:58Speaker 2: under the lights. They've been on their feet all day
- 12:00Speaker 2: and they're dehydrated. They didn't eat or drink properly. And
- 12:04Speaker 2: so you know, Christian cramped in the first night game
- 12:06Speaker 2: he played in. I'm like, all right, you know you're dehydrated.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I'd like to think you'd drink enough loos throughout the
- 12:11Speaker 2: day but it's hard to do and he's he like,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you know, he's in on offense, on defense, on special teams.
- 12:16Speaker 2: He didn't come off the field. So he's one of
- 12:18Speaker 2: those guys. It's not like you're playing fifty snaps. You
- 12:20Speaker 2: might be playing one hundred and fifteen snaps. And in
- 12:22Speaker 2: the beginning of the summer it's hot. I mean in
- 12:24Speaker 2: the beginning of the school you're right, in August, it's
- 12:26Speaker 2: you know, ninety degrees or eighty some degrees. So yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 2: when he cramped up, I'm like, you know, let's get
- 12:31Speaker 2: an IV. You won't and he never cramped up ever again.
- 12:34Speaker 2: After getting IV's you're welcome. I will say this, we
- 12:37Speaker 2: got to love the photosophy.
- 12:38Speaker 3: We did have internally, like sat in the room by
- 12:40Speaker 3: himself and like, all.
- 12:41Speaker 2: Right, this is what we gotta se We did have
- 12:43Speaker 2: one bad experience where I regretted my decision to get
- 12:46Speaker 2: him in IV. It was a before a state championship game,
- 12:48Speaker 2: and I'm like, you know, by this time, you know
- 12:50Speaker 2: how it is. If you think it works, it works, right, Yeah,
- 12:53Speaker 2: But I think ivs do work. But this wasn't a
- 12:55Speaker 2: night game. It was like an afternoon game. But probably
- 12:56Speaker 2: didn't need the IV. But he's like, are we gonna
- 12:59Speaker 2: get an IV? I'm like, yeah, we're get the ivy
- 13:00Speaker 2: Like he's going to be locked in, right, he's going
- 13:01Speaker 2: to feel like Superman getting this IV with electrolyts. It's
- 13:04Speaker 2: just a basic you know, saline solution, electro lights, whatever,
- 13:07Speaker 2: no big deal. But our doctor that we went to
- 13:09Speaker 2: was out of town. So I'm like, you know, they
- 13:10Speaker 2: got IV places all over the place. We just went
- 13:12Speaker 2: to like a strip mall, like outside IV place, and like,
- 13:16Speaker 2: this place will do. How hard is it to give
- 13:18Speaker 2: an IV? Right, it's not too difficult. So we go
- 13:21Speaker 2: in there, no problem, we'll set them up, we'll get
- 13:23Speaker 2: them the IV. I'm kind of on my phone text
- 13:25Speaker 2: and he's like, hey, Dad, Dad, I look over. He's
- 13:28Speaker 2: got like a softball sized lump in his arm. Went
- 13:31Speaker 2: through the vein. Well, they didn't hit the vein at all.
- 13:34Speaker 2: They were pumping sailine underneath his skin and it was
- 13:36Speaker 2: just swelling up. And I'm like, oh my gosh. So
- 13:38Speaker 2: I called the nurse practitioner and she comes in and says, oh,
- 13:41Speaker 2: it's okay, it's just solution, starts pressing down on it
- 13:43Speaker 2: to get it to go away, and so my heart
- 13:46Speaker 2: rate is up a little bit because I'm like, we
- 13:47Speaker 2: got a game in a few hours, like this is
- 13:48Speaker 2: the day of the state championship. She's like, I'll not
- 13:51Speaker 2: the head. So she's like, I'll try, I'll try. I'll
- 13:53Speaker 2: try it again, right, I'll try it again. I'm like,
- 13:56Speaker 2: I'm a little nervous because I'm like, I don't know
- 13:57Speaker 2: these people, and you know, it's an outdoor strip mall.
- 14:00Speaker 2: It shouldn't be that hard. So she tries it again
- 14:03Speaker 2: and dude, she hits a vein and blood literally splattered
- 14:06Speaker 2: up to the ceiling. There's blood splattering everywhere, and I'm
- 14:10Speaker 2: having a panic attack. Now. I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 14:12Speaker 2: like he's gonna be low on blood and forget the IV.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Like he's losing blood. It's splattered all the way up
- 14:17Speaker 2: to the ceiling. And the look on his eyes was
- 14:18Speaker 2: just sheer shock, like what just happened. So I'm like, oh,
- 14:21Speaker 2: we're good, We're good. You know, let's let's just go.
- 14:24Speaker 2: So you know, you still got this lump that's slowly
- 14:26Speaker 2: going down the blood on the ceiling. I'm like, oh my,
- 14:29Speaker 2: it's like we have a game in a couple hours.
- 14:31Speaker 2: So we're out of here. So we leave did and
- 14:32Speaker 2: get the IV and Christian makes fun of me because
- 14:34Speaker 2: he's like a believer in me, right, He's like, Dad,
- 14:36Speaker 2: got me the IV's this is gonna help me. And
- 14:38Speaker 2: we get in the car and he's like, well, we're
- 14:39Speaker 2: gonna go somewhere else for the IV and I'm like, no, dude,
- 14:41Speaker 2: it's it's really all in your mind. It's overrated. Just
- 14:43Speaker 2: drink a lot of gate.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Hey, everything is drink.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Drink a lot of Gator. He'll be fine. It is incredible.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Drink a lot of body arm or actually is what
- 14:53Speaker 2: you should be Yeah, this stuff, by the way, zero, No,
- 14:57Speaker 2: this stuff is delicious. I love body arm.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Do you you still follow like lot of like health
- 15:01Speaker 3: things and you kind of dive into the biohacking world
- 15:03Speaker 3: at all.
- 15:06Speaker 2: I wouldn't say bio hacking, but I do get my
- 15:09Speaker 2: blood levels tested every year, and I want to make
- 15:11Speaker 2: sure that you know, my hormones are balanced and my
- 15:15Speaker 2: blood levels are balanced. And also, you know, you get
- 15:18Speaker 2: in your fifties, guys, you guys are still so young. Man.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I love hanging out with Christian's friends. By the way,
- 15:22Speaker 2: this is cool, but is but but you know, you
- 15:26Speaker 2: get older. Unfortunately I don't have all my friends with
- 15:28Speaker 2: me man some of it. So early detection is important,
- 15:30Speaker 2: Getting yourself tested is important, and feeling good. Man, leave
- 15:33Speaker 2: healthy as long as you can. You know, you guys
- 15:35Speaker 2: have heard the horror stories about former football players and
- 15:37Speaker 2: all the difficult physical challenges they have, and so yeah, man,
- 15:41Speaker 2: get tested often and early and do everything you can
- 15:43Speaker 2: to feel good.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Was it when you were you talk about like, you know,
- 15:46Speaker 3: guys who stopped playing football and they kind of go
- 15:48Speaker 3: downhill a little bit, But like when you played, a
- 15:51Speaker 3: lot of the rules have changed since then, a lot
- 15:53Speaker 3: of like a lot of bigger hits and stuff. Was
- 15:55Speaker 3: there ever a point where you started seeing maybe some
- 15:57Speaker 3: of your former teammates going downhill? You're like, I got
- 15:59Speaker 3: to make sure I can do everything I possibly can
- 16:01Speaker 3: can not for this now happened.
- 16:03Speaker 2: To me absolutely, And so obviously you hear all the
- 16:06Speaker 2: talk about head trauma. I think a lot of athletes also.
- 16:09Speaker 2: You know, the rules are different, they protect players a
- 16:11Speaker 2: little bit better, but it's still a collision sport, you
- 16:13Speaker 2: know that, right. You know there's drug and alcohol abuse,
- 16:16Speaker 2: there's depression, there's all kinds of things that former players
- 16:19Speaker 2: go through once they retire. I think today's players are
- 16:22Speaker 2: so much better educated. They've heard the stories of players
- 16:25Speaker 2: that came before them. They understand how important is to
- 16:27Speaker 2: take care of the body. You're looking in phenomenal shape. Man,
- 16:29Speaker 2: how much weight have you lost? I've lost sixty pounds.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Sixty pounds, right, And so all the linemen I played
- 16:33Speaker 2: with on our team's lost a bunch of weight and
- 16:35Speaker 2: gotten not all of them, not all of them are
- 16:37Speaker 2: with us, but a lot of them got in shape.
- 16:39Speaker 2: They knew that. Look, I got to lose weight and
- 16:40Speaker 2: be at a healthy weight and feel good. I want
- 16:41Speaker 2: to feel good moving around. I want to be healthy
- 16:43Speaker 2: and I want to live a long time. So you
- 16:44Speaker 2: you're proactive about it, right, Not everyone is. Some people,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you know, it's drugs, alcohol, it's eating too much food.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Getting overweight and just being overweight alone causes a lot
- 16:53Speaker 2: of problems. But I think today's athletes understand it. I
- 16:57Speaker 2: think they do a better job. Especially linemen are taking
- 16:59Speaker 2: care of themselves once they retire.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's unique with offensive linemen. It seems like every
- 17:02Speaker 3: offensive lineman kind of goes this way and then like
- 17:05Speaker 3: the running backs and receivers and corners keep eating the
- 17:08Speaker 3: same way and like it flips a little bit, right.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and so so were you a weight gainer a
- 17:13Speaker 2: weight loser? I was.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I was a weight gang guy.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Always.
- 17:16Speaker 2: You always had to gain weight.
- 17:17Speaker 3: My first weight at Michigan, I was two hundred fifty
- 17:19Speaker 3: four pounds. Like, hey, your red shirting because you had
- 17:22Speaker 3: all the weight. And I would do, you know, wake
- 17:24Speaker 3: up three am, have like pasta, like a chicken alfredo
- 17:28Speaker 3: from like a pizza hutah, and like scarf that down.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Then go do a workout at six am. Throw that up.
- 17:33Speaker 3: And then they're just like shoveling food in me over
- 17:35Speaker 3: and over again. So when I did inevitably stop playing,
- 17:38Speaker 3: it became like, oh that this is easy. I'll just
- 17:40Speaker 3: start shdding the weight and it came off relatively fast.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Yeah. We always I have that argument with a lot
- 17:44Speaker 2: of different people. My brother was a kid. It was
- 17:46Speaker 2: real skinny, and he's a basketball player and he always
- 17:48Speaker 2: had to gain weight, and he's like, dude, it's so
- 17:50Speaker 2: much harder to gain weight than to lose weight. And
- 17:51Speaker 2: I'm like, I think it's harder to lose weight because
- 17:53Speaker 2: I was like two thirty eight in high school and
- 17:55Speaker 2: had to lose weight to play receiver. Even going into
- 17:57Speaker 2: the NFL. Probably played at two twenty twenty two. So
- 18:00Speaker 2: I was constantly trying to lose weight, and so for me,
- 18:02Speaker 2: I always thought it was harder to lose weight. But
- 18:04Speaker 2: it's a healthy debate in the NFL. To be a
- 18:06Speaker 2: lead at your position, you need to be at least
- 18:08Speaker 2: within a range. Some guys have to gain, some have
- 18:10Speaker 2: to lose. But I think the ones that end up
- 18:12Speaker 2: healthier were the lighter ones that had to gain. Even
- 18:15Speaker 2: though it's hard to do. For you, you gain the weight,
- 18:17Speaker 2: it's easier to shed it because you see some guys
- 18:19Speaker 2: gain one hundred pounds, and you're right, I see, I
- 18:21Speaker 2: know dbs and receivers that put on one hundred pounds.
- 18:24Speaker 2: They don't even look like the same person. It's just
- 18:26Speaker 2: not healthy.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:27Speaker 3: One guy that comes to my mind is you know
- 18:29Speaker 3: you remember denaral Robinson.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Yeah, from Michigan. Yeah, yeah, well looking a little thick now,
- 18:33Speaker 2: I'll call it. Then. I love my boy, I love
- 18:35Speaker 2: the nar but you know he's well, yeah, I feel
- 18:39Speaker 2: his pain, man, because I I'm you know, I need
- 18:41Speaker 2: to be lighter than I am. But at one point,
- 18:43Speaker 2: I was weigh thirty pounds heavier than this, and I'm thinking, uh,
- 18:46Speaker 2: you know, I don't feel good moving around. It's harder
- 18:49Speaker 2: to work out, and you just know it's not it's
- 18:51Speaker 2: not healthy. You put yourself at risk of so many
- 18:53Speaker 2: different illnesses and diseases, and like, I want to be around.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I'm watching my kids play ball. I'm watching Yeah, you
- 18:58Speaker 2: know my wife isn't great shape and energetic. I mean
- 19:01Speaker 2: I got to keep up, keep up around from Yeah.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Yeah again, I'm still hanging out with my son's friends. Yeah,
- 19:07Speaker 2: went on the most bus I've ever Yeah, sat in
- 19:10Speaker 2: over here.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Which way? Which way is? Treyll Davis went.
- 19:14Speaker 2: He's in great shape? Real You seen him lately?
- 19:16Speaker 1: No?
- 19:16Speaker 2: Oh? TD? Yeah, I ran into him in Colorado. Yeah,
- 19:20Speaker 2: oddly enough, I was walking across the street and he
- 19:22Speaker 2: like sped his car up and hunked the horn. I
- 19:24Speaker 2: thought I was gonna get hit, and I was just
- 19:25Speaker 2: TD messing with me. Yeah, just saw him in the
- 19:27Speaker 2: middle of street, white lightning. Yeah, and uh, and then
- 19:30Speaker 2: I said, you know, I cleared some traffic for him,
- 19:32Speaker 2: like I took pride in doing when he was playing.
- 19:34Speaker 2: But no, he's chiseled dude.
- 19:36Speaker 1: How about his way? He started in the league like
- 19:38Speaker 1: they like kickoff right, like special teams.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I was there, man, he was like the sixth string
- 19:42Speaker 2: running back, and uh, I felt sorry for him. I
- 19:45Speaker 2: didn't really know him, Like there's his back out. He
- 19:46Speaker 2: was a late round draft pick out of Georgia and
- 19:49Speaker 2: he was six string and they were you know, back then,
- 19:52Speaker 2: if you're a scout team running back, that's the worst
- 19:54Speaker 2: job in football. Like here's the first string defense. We're
- 19:57Speaker 2: going to practice our stuff and let's put the third
- 19:59Speaker 2: string line in in training camp and run our six
- 20:02Speaker 2: string running back behind him. On every plane, he was
- 20:04Speaker 2: getting tattooed, like just annihilate and if he.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Does well, it's like no come back, run it again.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Yeah, oh no, it's this way. It's all set up
- 20:12Speaker 2: for the defense. So I didn't even know him, and
- 20:14Speaker 2: I felt sorry for him. And then one by one,
- 20:16Speaker 2: kind of like your story, guys started going down and
- 20:18Speaker 2: guys start getting hurt. We were in Tokyo, Japan, playing
- 20:22Speaker 2: the forty nine ers, and he almost left. If he
- 20:25Speaker 2: spoke Japanese he would have left. But he went down
- 20:28Speaker 2: to the lobby tried to ask for cab. They weren't
- 20:31Speaker 2: understanding what he was trying to say. He's like, Okay,
- 20:32Speaker 2: forget about he's gonna leave. He was literally gonna leave Tokyo.
- 20:35Speaker 2: He's like with six string, he's getting killed in practice.
- 20:37Speaker 2: He's like, there, I'm not gonna make the team. There's
- 20:39Speaker 2: no way. And then he made that play on special teams.
- 20:42Speaker 2: I think something clicked. He's like, look, I don't care, man,
- 20:43Speaker 2: I'm just gonna hit somebody flew down on the kickoff team,
- 20:46Speaker 2: blew somebody up. Next thing, you know, a couple guys
- 20:48Speaker 2: go down. He's the starter's Hall of Fame running back,
- 20:50Speaker 2: but he was that close to leaving the team. That
- 20:53Speaker 2: close's wild.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I've never heard that part of it. Have you
- 20:56Speaker 1: seen the play?
- 20:57Speaker 2: No?
- 20:58Speaker 1: He just I mean he just this dude flies and
- 21:01Speaker 1: then like if you do, whether it's the NFL films
- 21:04Speaker 1: or something out there that like kind of talks about
- 21:06Speaker 1: it or history. Maybe it's a football life. I don't
- 21:07Speaker 1: know if he has one, but uh, everybody's like, you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: turn their head like, yo, who is that was that?
- 21:13Speaker 1: Terrell Davis Like who's that kid?
- 21:14Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 21:15Speaker 1: And then he yeah, freaking.
- 21:16Speaker 3: Goes like the man start of his whole thing.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yeah, origin story back when you could get like the
- 21:20Speaker 1: you know, you could do like big running starts on
- 21:22Speaker 1: kickoff right, Oh yeah, like not even now you got
- 21:25Speaker 1: to stand there. That was five yards and that one
- 21:27Speaker 1: might have been like ten, right, Yeah, you can get
- 21:29Speaker 1: more than that.
- 21:30Speaker 2: You could go back as far as you want it,
- 21:31Speaker 2: but usually you were ten just to time it up right. Yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 2: but that was like a whole training camp worth of
- 21:36Speaker 2: just anger and pain and hostility that he took out
- 21:39Speaker 2: on that one play, which really changed the court. I
- 21:42Speaker 2: think he would have been great no matter what, but
- 21:44Speaker 2: for the Broncos, it changed the course of his career.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Wasn't Shannon Sharpe a similar story? Like he had to
- 21:48Speaker 3: play special teams a whole bunch.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Shannon was a really good tight end. He was already
- 21:52Speaker 2: an all pro tight end when I got to the Broncos,
- 21:54Speaker 2: And so I know, was he undrafted late round pick?
- 21:56Speaker 3: He was a late round but I thought he was
- 21:58Speaker 3: a core four guys didn't make his hay that way beginning.
- 22:00Speaker 1: He definitely didn't get fat.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Have you seen him. I just saw him today. Man,
- 22:04Speaker 2: he got bigger and stronger than he was to play.
- 22:06Speaker 3: Yeah, Yeah, he's in he's in medicine.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Man.
- 22:09Speaker 2: You know, I like to try to make it I'm
- 22:11Speaker 2: getting older. I try to make excuses for not being
- 22:13Speaker 2: in better shape than I see Shannon. I'm like, oh,
- 22:15Speaker 2: you're killing me, dude, Yeah, you're killing me. Yeah. We're
- 22:18Speaker 2: at a party.
- 22:18Speaker 3: He's a super Bowl way, we're a seventh round big Yeah,
- 22:22Speaker 3: we're a party of last super Bowl. And he was
- 22:24Speaker 3: there in obviously Shannon, he's he's a fantastic personality, is
- 22:26Speaker 3: crushing life on so many different platforms right now. But
- 22:30Speaker 3: he was at that party and he's wearing a shirt
- 22:32Speaker 3: that he knows is a size too small for him,
- 22:34Speaker 3: and he looked you kind of a stare. I'm like, bro,
- 22:36Speaker 3: you look amazing. He's an action figure. Yeah, he literally
- 22:38Speaker 3: looks like an action figure. It's it's how fun was
- 22:41Speaker 3: he to.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Be around a training camp? You see this stuff with
- 22:44Speaker 1: the Ravens. But I'm sure he just has that personality.
- 22:46Speaker 2: It was so fun. It's like you guys, you guys
- 22:48Speaker 2: are naturals. On the podcast, like when he's out there talking,
- 22:51Speaker 2: that's him. He was that way in the locker room.
- 22:52Speaker 2: He was always cracking jokes, making fun of people's clothes
- 22:55Speaker 2: and having fun. And you know, I was always more
- 22:58Speaker 2: serious guy, but I loved Shannon and we had this guy,
- 23:01Speaker 2: Keith Burns, and they play off each other a little
- 23:03Speaker 2: bit and crack jokes and it just lightens up the
- 23:05Speaker 2: whole mood and makes us makes it a little more fun. Yeah.

- 24:43Speaker 3: As let's just say hypothetically, the forty nine Ers win
- 24:47Speaker 3: the Super Bowl. How long do you wait until you
- 24:50Speaker 3: tell your son you have two more than him?
- 24:52Speaker 2: Oh, I will never say that, you know, I never,
- 24:55Speaker 2: you know, I'll be so happy. First off, if that happens,
- 24:57Speaker 2: I will be the happiest person on the planet. I
- 24:59Speaker 2: might be happier Christian for him and for the forty
- 25:01Speaker 2: nine Ers. This you know. Obviously I love Christian, He's
- 25:04Speaker 2: my son. This has been a dream of his. But
- 25:05Speaker 2: also this team feels like family to me. There's connections
- 25:08Speaker 2: with the coaches and the general manager that goes back
- 25:11Speaker 2: into my college days. So that would be incredible. But
- 25:15Speaker 2: I never you know, having played football in Denver and
- 25:19Speaker 2: with my kids playing football, I don't have any Lombardi trophies.
- 25:23Speaker 2: My my rings were in safety deposit box. And I
- 25:26Speaker 2: never wanted them to have to think that's what I
- 25:28Speaker 2: need to be able to do to that's cool to
- 25:30Speaker 2: be successful. Yeah, And and it doesn't mean that's the
- 25:32Speaker 2: right or wrong answer. I'm just like, whatever they do,
- 25:34Speaker 2: it's their experience. It's not about me. It's about them.
- 25:37Speaker 2: I'm here to love them and support them. If they
- 25:39Speaker 2: have football questions for me, I'll help them as much
- 25:40Speaker 2: as I can get them in the IVS.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Tape up their jersey, you wearing jeans but a school
- 25:46Speaker 1: But it's exactly, but it's rue.
- 25:47Speaker 2: But it's really about weigh and you I interjected a
- 25:52Speaker 2: little bit. But on the field, you know, it was
- 25:57Speaker 2: their experience. So I want them to feel that way.
- 25:58Speaker 2: And I didn't want to set these redics less expectations
- 26:01Speaker 2: and not that it would have mattered, I think, because
- 26:03Speaker 2: I think they have high expectations for themselves. But you know,
- 26:06Speaker 2: now I'm older, I'm like, yeah, I hope you do
- 26:08Speaker 2: win so I can maybe put up one of those.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Be proud to have one of those, Yeah in my office.
- 26:11Speaker 2: Yeah one day.
- 26:13Speaker 1: How awesome, like you alluded to it, like the forty
- 26:16Speaker 1: nine ers feels like family, a lot of connections, like
- 26:19Speaker 1: John Lynch, the Shanahan's, you guys, like it has to
- 26:23Speaker 1: be just surreal that it's your son, coach, Mike Shanahan's son,
- 26:29Speaker 1: your you know, your former teammate, and John Lynch, Like
- 26:31Speaker 1: you guys are all kind of rocking the same team.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Like how how sick is that always are back together?
- 26:36Speaker 2: Yeah? Man, No, I just have so much respect for
- 26:39Speaker 2: those guys you just mentioned I mean they are the
- 26:40Speaker 2: real deal, right. I mean John Lynch was a teammate
- 26:43Speaker 2: of mine at Stanford. He was played quarterback. I caught
- 26:45Speaker 2: passes from him, and he was the real deal going
- 26:47Speaker 2: back that far before he switched to say.
- 26:49Speaker 1: How far off of how different the difference in like.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Maybe two years maybe? Okay, yeah, and he switched the
- 26:54Speaker 2: safety after I graduated, But I mean he was the
- 26:56Speaker 2: real deal back then, like a true pro already in
- 26:58Speaker 2: colle one of those guys like college, this guy already
- 27:01Speaker 2: has his tack together. Yeah, not everybody does, but so
- 27:04Speaker 2: much respect for him. And then Kyle Shanahan watching him
- 27:06Speaker 2: grow up, and you know, future Hall of Fame coach,
- 27:09Speaker 2: Mike Shanahan just had such an important impact on my life.
- 27:14Speaker 2: And our families are close. And then you know, Brian
- 27:16Speaker 2: Greesie was my quarterback, and Bobby t is a legend
- 27:19Speaker 2: and running back, and Anthony Lynn's my teammate. It's incredible
- 27:21Speaker 2: running backs coach. And the Kubiak kids are over there,
- 27:24Speaker 2: and I mean it. You know, if you could go
- 27:26Speaker 2: back and remember high school ball where you knew all
- 27:29Speaker 2: he knew all the families, right, it's like, oh, you're
- 27:30Speaker 2: all there. You know, tailgating and you know everybody. That's
- 27:33Speaker 2: what it feels like in the NFL, and I think
- 27:34Speaker 2: that's rare, like unless you're on the team, like to
- 27:37Speaker 2: be a parent and feel like I know everybody, Oh
- 27:39Speaker 2: that's what it's one of one feeling. It's such a
- 27:41Speaker 2: cool feeling.
- 27:41Speaker 1: It is, dude, like you're a player experiencing that stuff
- 27:44Speaker 1: and now you're at this, you're you know, you're a
- 27:46Speaker 1: parent now, like coming back to it and you're just like, yo.
- 27:49Speaker 3: I would be embarrassed. Wh my dad would come to
- 27:51Speaker 3: the games and meet the coaches and hey, so, well,
- 27:53Speaker 3: how's my son doing. I'm like, that's shut up, you
- 27:54Speaker 3: get the car, let's just let's go. That's all. You're
- 27:57Speaker 3: probably hanging out with them, chopping it up, and they're
- 27:59Speaker 3: just like, you know, this is one of us. Because
- 28:01Speaker 3: you know a dad, it's like, hey, proud of your son.
- 28:03Speaker 3: He's doing a great job. He kind of hit him
- 28:04Speaker 3: with the basics as a coach, but with you, it's
- 28:07Speaker 3: like they can probably give you a little more inside
- 28:08Speaker 3: ball and talk a little bit more, knowing you understand
- 28:10Speaker 3: the craft as well, and they know your personality.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And that he has the connections with GM coaches, head
- 28:16Speaker 1: coaches played with them like that is really special.
- 28:19Speaker 3: So with all that all, like this family style of
- 28:22Speaker 3: thing with the forty nine ers, when Christian's playing for
- 28:24Speaker 3: the Panthers and that trade, you see the trade finally
- 28:27Speaker 3: happen from the Panthers of the forty nine ers, Like, what's
- 28:29Speaker 3: your reaction?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I was a static because I know Kyle Shanahana
- 28:33Speaker 2: know what an incredible coach he he is. And then
- 28:35Speaker 2: I looked at the roster and I'm like, dude, this
- 28:37Speaker 2: team is littered with talent, and I knew about all
- 28:39Speaker 2: the guys we just mentioned Anthony Lynn and Bobby t
- 28:41Speaker 2: and Brian Greasy and the Koopjacks and all the other
- 28:44Speaker 2: guys on the coaching staff, and I'm like, this is
- 28:47Speaker 2: a perfect situation for you. Kyle's going to know how
- 28:49Speaker 2: to use you. He's a phenomenal coach. You know, you
- 28:51Speaker 2: have a ton of other talent around you. You're going
- 28:54Speaker 2: to get to be part of a great organization. I
- 28:56Speaker 2: played for the forty nine ers. It's an incredible organization
- 28:58Speaker 2: from Jed York on down, and so Lisa and I
- 29:00Speaker 2: were static. Plus we went to Stanford. It's in the
- 29:02Speaker 2: Bay area. I'm like, this is incredible for us, easy
- 29:05Speaker 2: flight from Denver. But Christian, you know, he's a team guy.
- 29:09Speaker 2: He's like a loyal guy. Whoever his team is, those
- 29:11Speaker 2: are his guys. He's a boys boy. Yeah, so he
- 29:13Speaker 2: was like, you know, hey, these are my guys. And
- 29:16Speaker 2: you know, I've lived here for five and a half years,
- 29:17Speaker 2: and I know our family is history, but I don't
- 29:21Speaker 2: really you know, know Kyle, I was four during Super
- 29:23Speaker 2: Bowl thirty three running around in the confetti, and so
- 29:27Speaker 2: Lisa and I were super very excited about it. But
- 29:29Speaker 2: then one of the first things he did was he
- 29:30Speaker 2: had a meeting with Kyle. Those guys got together and
- 29:33Speaker 2: talked for like an hour and a half, and Christian
- 29:35Speaker 2: asked him a lot of questions. You know, why did
- 29:37Speaker 2: you trade for me? How are you going to use me?
- 29:38Speaker 2: He wanted to find out, you know, what his mindset
- 29:41Speaker 2: was and how he viewed the game and him as
- 29:42Speaker 2: a player and coach Shanahan. Kyle did the same thing.
- 29:45Speaker 2: He's like, look, this is why we brought you in.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Let me get to know you a little bit. Because
- 29:49Speaker 2: even though our families had this history, you know, when
- 29:51Speaker 2: you're four and another kids in high school. You don't
- 29:53Speaker 2: know each other, so it was really like their first
- 29:55Speaker 2: time getting to know each other, and I thought that
- 29:58Speaker 2: was pretty mature both of them. It's like, hey, let's
- 30:00Speaker 2: get to know each other and forget all this talk
- 30:01Speaker 2: about our families. Man the man, this is you and me.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Let's find out what we're all about. And after hour
- 30:06Speaker 2: hour and a half meeting, I mean, Christian called me
- 30:09Speaker 2: up and said, hey, I'm in the right place. Is
- 30:11Speaker 2: this is It's awesome. This was the place for me.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Did you have any tip off or hint that that
- 30:16Speaker 1: was in the works before it happened.
- 30:18Speaker 2: No, Lisa actually did a podcast and with her friend Ashley,
- 30:22Speaker 2: and they brought on Peggy Shanahan and they joked around
- 30:25Speaker 2: about the trade a few days before it happened. But
- 30:27Speaker 2: we didn't know any more than anybody else we're following
- 30:29Speaker 2: social media. Could be the rams, could be the forty
- 30:32Speaker 2: nine ers. You know, if you're an organization, you're not
- 30:34Speaker 2: going to show your hand because you're in a biding
- 30:36Speaker 2: war with other teams, so nobody's going to tell anybody anything.
- 30:39Speaker 2: So we were very happy when we heard the news.
- 30:44Speaker 2: That is awesome, that should.
- 30:46Speaker 1: We dive into the glory days of the Broncos. Yes,
- 30:50Speaker 1: a question before we do get to those two Super
- 30:52Speaker 1: Bowls in a row, Like your first one was with
- 30:54Speaker 1: the Niners, but you're with the Niners for a year,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and do you feel like this is not on trying
- 31:00Speaker 1: to This is gonna sound disrespectful, but I know it
- 31:02Speaker 1: was your one of your lower statistical years. Did you
- 31:05Speaker 1: get injured during that year with the forty nine ers.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, because I was going to start over Jerry Rice,
- 31:10Speaker 2: but then I had an I tweaked my ankle. I
- 31:14Speaker 2: think no. Look, I played for the New York Giants
- 31:18Speaker 2: and I got there during the time that had a
- 31:20Speaker 2: lot of adversity. Bill Parcells was my coach. I love
- 31:23Speaker 2: getting the call from him on draft day. Hey, we're
- 31:24Speaker 2: drafting the third round. This is when camp starts. We'll
- 31:28Speaker 2: see you there. Oh it wasn't the red carpet treatment
- 31:31Speaker 2: you get today, right, And yeah, I had to wait
- 31:33Speaker 2: around on a rotary phone to find out if I
- 31:35Speaker 2: was drafted because the television coverage didn't coverage every round.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I was a third round draft pick, so I didn't
- 31:39Speaker 2: even know we were off the television coverage. And then
- 31:42Speaker 2: when I got there, he getting a coach Parcels gave
- 31:44Speaker 2: a great speech about how we just won the Super Bowl,
- 31:46Speaker 2: so we don't really need any of you guys, but
- 31:47Speaker 2: hopefully one or two of you can make the team
- 31:49Speaker 2: and contribute. And so it was not a red carpet treatment.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It was kind of shocking, like whoa, Like I got drafted,
- 31:55Speaker 2: but there's no guarantee. And back then you'd see second
- 31:57Speaker 2: and third round picks cut, like you aren't guaranteed to
- 31:59Speaker 2: make team just because you were drafted. Fortunately I made
- 32:02Speaker 2: the team, but unfortunately Bill Parcells stepped down and he
- 32:06Speaker 2: had some hard issues as it was reported, and stepped down.
- 32:09Speaker 2: And then you know, we were one of the oldest teams.
- 32:11Speaker 2: We just won a Super Bowl. A lot of guys
- 32:12Speaker 2: started retiring, switching teams, new ownership and then new coaches
- 32:18Speaker 2: and then new players, and it just all this adversity.
- 32:21Speaker 2: So you know, I love that team, like I'm a
- 32:23Speaker 2: team guy too, like I love my teammates from the Giants.
- 32:25Speaker 2: And then we had a coaching change and I got cut.
- 32:28Speaker 2: And when I got cut, it was a wake up call, like, man,
- 32:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna go to business school or law school. I
- 32:32Speaker 2: don't know what I'm gonna do like, I think I'll
- 32:34Speaker 2: make a team, but I just got cut, so I
- 32:35Speaker 2: don't know, And I thought, what do I want? You know,
- 32:39Speaker 2: what kind of team do I want to go to?
- 32:40Speaker 2: I'm a free agent. I got like four or five
- 32:41Speaker 2: teams to choose from, and I'm like, I want to
- 32:44Speaker 2: win a Super Bowl. I want to go to a
- 32:46Speaker 2: team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl.
- 32:48Speaker 2: So I took the league minimum and went out to
- 32:50Speaker 2: San Francisco. I'm like, I'm gonna try out for this team.
- 32:53Speaker 2: And there were fourteen receivers and they take four, Like,
- 32:56Speaker 2: imagine a team that only takes four receivers this year.
- 32:58Speaker 2: But it's Jerry Rice Taylor. They had won Super Bowls already, right,
- 33:01Speaker 2: those were the starters, and there's a lot of twenty
- 33:04Speaker 2: one person else. They didn't play a ton of three receivers.
- 33:06Speaker 2: And then it was me and Nate Singleton. But you
- 33:09Speaker 2: know that those guys feel like brothers to me. I
- 33:11Speaker 2: was there seven months, but like Bardoes who started at
- 33:14Speaker 2: right tackle, like allowed me to ship all my boxes
- 33:17Speaker 2: to his house, took us in like we were family.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Steve Young was incredible, incredible to me. Got to learn
- 33:22Speaker 2: from Jerry Rice. I see those guys this year. It's
- 33:24Speaker 2: like a reunion. Every home game at the forty nine Ers,
- 33:26Speaker 2: I'm tapping people up, all my old teammates. I'm like,
- 33:29Speaker 2: and it seems like yesterday. But I was backing up Jerry,
- 33:32Speaker 2: So I didn't get on the field a lot in
- 33:33Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. I got in for a couple of
- 33:35Speaker 2: plays Jerry Dinga's shoulders, one of his shoulders, and I
- 33:39Speaker 2: get in the game and I'm thinking, I'm going to
- 33:41Speaker 2: Disney World, man, Like I had one quick catch for
- 33:43Speaker 2: five yards, and like I'm just getting heated up, like
- 33:46Speaker 2: I may be the one going to Disney World. And
- 33:48Speaker 2: then of course Jerry comes back and I go back
- 33:50Speaker 2: to the sideline. I think I had a special teams
- 33:52Speaker 2: tackle on kickoff, but I was around. I mean, we
- 33:54Speaker 2: had fourteen Pro Bowl players. We had the offensive player there,
- 33:57Speaker 2: and Steve Young the defensive player there, and Deon sand
- 34:00Speaker 2: Or so I went against every day in practice. So
- 34:02Speaker 2: I'm backing up Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time,
- 34:05Speaker 2: and going against Dion, greatest DV of all time, for
- 34:08Speaker 2: a whole year. And I really think I got way
- 34:10Speaker 2: better because of going because of learning behind Jerry and
- 34:14Speaker 2: competing against Dion and then that kind of set the
- 34:17Speaker 2: tone for the rest of my career with the Broncos.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Is that workout?
- 34:20Speaker 2: Think of Jerry Rice's sickening as it. Yeah, it's portrayed,
- 34:23Speaker 2: it absolutely is. He had this hill that he used
- 34:25Speaker 2: to run and the thing that was just amazing about
- 34:28Speaker 2: him is his conditioning. And you don't always think about
- 34:31Speaker 2: like your endurance, Like football's kind of an anaerobic sport.
- 34:34Speaker 2: It's sprint stop, sprint stop, sprint stop. But he wouldn't
- 34:37Speaker 2: slow down in the fourth quarter and he could run
- 34:39Speaker 2: for days. We had this rule in San Francisco, which
- 34:42Speaker 2: we continued in Denver, where if you're a receiver you
- 34:45Speaker 2: had to catch it and finish forty yards. And it's like, okay,
- 34:47Speaker 2: forty yards, right, So that means catch it and run
- 34:50Speaker 2: a little bit and then stop. No, they had forty yards.
- 34:52Speaker 2: They had a cone for forty yards. You had to
- 34:54Speaker 2: sprint forty yards after every reception. Nobody does that, but
- 34:57Speaker 2: he would do it every time. And if we were
- 35:00Speaker 2: across midfield, Jerry would sprint to the end zone. So
- 35:03Speaker 2: we literally had to start moving our drill closer to
- 35:06Speaker 2: the end zone from the forties so he would get
- 35:08Speaker 2: back to the huddle in time for the next play
- 35:10Speaker 2: because he would score on every play. He did it
- 35:12Speaker 2: all the time, for the whole practice, all year long,
- 35:15Speaker 2: and I'm thinking his conditioning level is off the charts.
- 35:18Speaker 2: He just doesn't get tired. So that was one of
- 35:21Speaker 2: his greatest skill sets. His other greatest skill set was
- 35:23Speaker 2: getting off the ball quickly. Nobody got off the line
- 35:26Speaker 2: off the snapcount faster than him. Was like he timed
- 35:28Speaker 2: it and it was almost simultaneous. As soon as the
- 35:30Speaker 2: ball even twitched, he was already off the line. So
- 35:32Speaker 2: if he was a four or five guy and there
- 35:34Speaker 2: was a four to three guy, he'd beat him five
- 35:35Speaker 2: yards down the field because he was off the line quicker.
- 35:39Speaker 2: And then the other thing was after he caught the ball,
- 35:41Speaker 2: he would catch it and turn off field instantly. So
- 35:44Speaker 2: like all the angles for defenders, you're trying to time
- 35:46Speaker 2: he's going to catch it, and then he's going to
- 35:47Speaker 2: like maybe a little hesitation and then try to go upfield.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It was seamless, like catching, go, catching, go, So all
- 35:52Speaker 2: those shallow crosses and short routes and I'm like, man,
- 35:55Speaker 2: I want to be more like that. And then he
- 35:56Speaker 2: would he would make routes his own. Like I was
- 35:58Speaker 2: always thinking, run the route exactly the way the coach
- 36:01Speaker 2: tells you to run the route, right, And I'd say, well,
- 36:03Speaker 2: Jerry didn't run that exactly the way the coach drew
- 36:05Speaker 2: it up, right. He he ran a comeback, but he
- 36:07Speaker 2: kind of bent it in on a post, and then
- 36:08Speaker 2: the next time he kind of bent out and stemmed
- 36:10Speaker 2: it up, and like he's getting open every time. But
- 36:11Speaker 2: he's like three different ways to run the same route.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And so I started copying some of that stuff and
- 36:16Speaker 2: it worked. So yeah, that was a great year for me.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It was a fun year. We won a Super Bowl,
- 36:22Speaker 2: got lifelong friends from that experience, and it really helped
- 36:25Speaker 2: me become a better player.
- 36:26Speaker 3: All Right, how we doing, folks, I'm pulling up another
- 36:29Speaker 3: ad read here. We're interrupting this episode, and guess we're

- 37:04Speaker 2: Where to Next?
- 37:06Speaker 3: Back to the episode when Jerry's like kind of cutting
- 37:08Speaker 3: it up and doing routes a little bit different the
- 37:10Speaker 3: first couple of times you try to do it, where
- 37:12Speaker 3: the coach is like, listen, you're not Jerry Rice, don't
- 37:14Speaker 3: be doing that. Because there was a couple of times
- 37:16Speaker 3: where run the road.
- 37:17Speaker 2: H yeah, you're white. You know what you are? Like?
- 37:19Speaker 2: Do your thing changed.
- 37:21Speaker 3: Lady Walker was a guy that I played with who
- 37:22Speaker 3: would just kind of run his own routes and the
- 37:24Speaker 3: coaches were like de Landy Walker, you know, mix a
- 37:26Speaker 3: Pro Bowl great wide receiver. He's like our only thread
- 37:29Speaker 3: at the time in twenty fourteen, twenty fifteen, and then
- 37:31Speaker 3: the next tight end would come up and do the
- 37:32Speaker 3: same thing, and he would just get chewed out, like
- 37:34Speaker 3: you need to run the route correctly.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Did you ever run into anything like that? Well, no,
- 37:39Speaker 2: I'm having a flashback now. I actually the first time
- 37:42Speaker 2: I stole out from Jerry was I was playing with
- 37:44Speaker 2: the Giants and we played them in the playoffs and
- 37:47Speaker 2: I got in the game, but I was watching film
- 37:49Speaker 2: to get ready for the game with New York, but
- 37:52Speaker 2: also watching their offense as well. I was just watching
- 37:54Speaker 2: a lot of film. So I watched Jerry on their
- 37:56Speaker 2: team run a comeback route the way I just described,
- 37:58Speaker 2: where he kind of took it a little bit, the
- 37:59Speaker 2: posting came back out of it, and so I ran
- 38:02Speaker 2: it that way against the forty nine ers, and I
- 38:03Speaker 2: was going against Merton Hanks, who was an All Pro
- 38:05Speaker 2: or at least Pro Bowl cornerback and it worked. I
- 38:07Speaker 2: got open and it worked. I'm like loving it. And
- 38:10Speaker 2: I actually got yelled at by my coach for running
- 38:12Speaker 2: it that way after the game. We lost the game,
- 38:14Speaker 2: but I had a great game and those routes work.
- 38:17Speaker 2: So when I got there, and maybe that influenced me
- 38:19Speaker 2: to go there, I'm like, I want to learn from this, dude.
- 38:21Speaker 2: I think I can up my game. I started copying
- 38:24Speaker 2: everything that I could, but not every coach will allow
- 38:26Speaker 2: you to do that, right. I mean, some coaches are like,
- 38:29Speaker 2: you got to run it a certain way, but I
- 38:31Speaker 2: think the best coaches know you to get open against
- 38:33Speaker 2: the elite defenders. You have to make the route your own.
- 38:37Speaker 2: If you just run a corner route, you know, you
- 38:38Speaker 2: push it ten to twelve and break straight to the corner.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Some dudes are just going to run right next to
- 38:42Speaker 2: you the whole time if you don't create some kind
- 38:44Speaker 2: of separation at the top of the stem or make
- 38:46Speaker 2: it look like another route. These dudes are too good, right,
- 38:49Speaker 2: And so I really helped. I think it helped me
- 38:51Speaker 2: become a grow from a good player to you know,
- 38:54Speaker 2: a great player.
- 38:56Speaker 3: You brought up how like, you guys lost a game
- 38:58Speaker 3: but you played well. How difficut that this is a
- 39:00Speaker 3: player for people like watching, like when your team loses
- 39:03Speaker 3: but you play amazing, Like kind of trying to suppress
- 39:05Speaker 3: that kind of happy feeling that I went off.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you guys know the game, right, So I
- 39:10Speaker 2: mean for me, you know, some people play because of
- 39:13Speaker 2: the thrill of victory, and other people play for the
- 39:15Speaker 2: from the fear of failure. It's like, I don't want
- 39:17Speaker 2: to disappoint the guys on my team, Like, no matter
- 39:20Speaker 2: whether we win or lose, as long as I can
- 39:22Speaker 2: leave this game and they know I gave them everything
- 39:25Speaker 2: that's gonna have to be enough, Like I gave you
- 39:26Speaker 2: everything I had. You guys know that, you watch the film,
- 39:29Speaker 2: I didn't. I gave great effort. I did the best
- 39:31Speaker 2: I could, man, Like, no matter what happens, you guys
- 39:33Speaker 2: know that that was the most important thing to me.
- 39:35Speaker 2: My teammates know that I gave them everything I had.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Wind loser draw, there's held nothing back. That's all I
- 39:40Speaker 2: got for you. I gave you everything. That's that's the
- 39:43Speaker 2: most important thing. You want to win because it's so
- 39:45Speaker 2: much more fun to celebrate, but you know, it's the
- 39:49Speaker 2: respect to your teammates, man, that means everything.
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yeah, is it true? I would hear that there were
- 39:54Speaker 1: old war stories and maybe they're just old tall tales,
- 39:57Speaker 1: but Deon Sanders would tie his hands behind his back
- 39:59Speaker 1: when trying to cover and trying to work and get
- 40:01Speaker 1: better against Jerry Rice.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Is that true or false? I can't say it never happened.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I didn't see it happen, but I can't say that
- 40:07Speaker 2: it never happened. So that was a great way to answer.
- 40:09Speaker 2: That's a great answer.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I bet those battles were just, you know,
- 40:13Speaker 1: fun to watch, like knowing Dion Prime Time. The style
- 40:16Speaker 1: of is are you surprised with the success as a
- 40:18Speaker 1: head coach.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Not at all. Man, He's a competitor. He's incredibly smart
- 40:22Speaker 2: football coach, and you know, I really cherish that opportunity
- 40:27Speaker 2: to go against him in practice every year. I remember
- 40:29Speaker 2: at one point, you know, I actually had sprained my
- 40:32Speaker 2: ankle in this charity basketball game. I warned my kids
- 40:35Speaker 2: all the time, by the way, you know, don't goof
- 40:37Speaker 2: around doing stupid stuff during the season. Yet I learned
- 40:40Speaker 2: the hard way because I played in a basketball game
- 40:41Speaker 2: spray my ankle. Probably one of the reasons I got
- 40:43Speaker 2: cut by the Giants in hindsight. And then and then
- 40:47Speaker 2: I go and you know, I have it all wrapped
- 40:48Speaker 2: up like in a cast, and like as a receiver,
- 40:50Speaker 2: maybe it's a little easier to get away when you're alignment,
- 40:53Speaker 2: but as a receiver you need full ankle flexion to run.
- 40:56Speaker 2: And so I'm in this cast and you know, they're
- 40:58Speaker 2: doing everything they're putting like EMU a lot, like maybe
- 41:01Speaker 2: the inflammation and whatever they can do. And it was
- 41:04Speaker 2: like one hundred and twenty degrees in Rockland, California, at
- 41:06Speaker 2: training camp, and I'm walking out there and like just
- 41:10Speaker 2: in this cast, there's fourteen receivers. Like, first they put
- 41:13Speaker 2: me in a bunk bed with like eight dudes. There's
- 41:14Speaker 2: like eight dudes in a room in bunks. Like the
- 41:16Speaker 2: size of this. I'm like, I had to go up
- 41:17Speaker 2: to George Siefert and say, dude, if you want to
- 41:18Speaker 2: cut me, cut me, but I can't. I'm not going
- 41:20Speaker 2: to stay in a room full of bunk beds with
- 41:21Speaker 2: a bunch of dudes that I know are going to
- 41:22Speaker 2: be here. And I thought he was going to cut
- 41:24Speaker 2: me on spot, but he moved me into my own room.
- 41:26Speaker 2: It was nice. Yeah, that's a good power play. Yeah,
- 41:30Speaker 2: I swear to you. I thought I was gonna get cut,
- 41:31Speaker 2: But I'm walking out to practice. I'm like, look, I'm
- 41:33Speaker 2: in these bunk beds, I'm in a cast. I got
- 41:35Speaker 2: to go into Deon Sanders in this boot that I'm
- 41:37Speaker 2: wearing every day. And I thought, you know what if
- 41:39Speaker 2: I beat him on one slant route, I'll tell my
- 41:42Speaker 2: kids about it for the rest of my life, you
- 41:44Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like just in practice forget the game. Yeah,
- 41:46Speaker 2: And so that was kind of the mentality had. So
- 41:48Speaker 2: I took pride and going against him. He made me
- 41:50Speaker 2: a lot better. I'd like to think that I didn't
- 41:52Speaker 2: let him take plays off in practice, and I think
- 41:55Speaker 2: that's why we won a super Bowl and had such
- 41:56Speaker 2: a great team. And it was the same with Jerry.
- 41:59Speaker 2: Like I remember we would run sprints and I was
- 42:01Speaker 2: always fresher because he played a whole game, right, I
- 42:03Speaker 2: mean like ten plays in the game. Some special teams.
- 42:06Speaker 2: I'm fresh on Monday, and so we do conditioning. I just,
- 42:10Speaker 2: you know, sometimes I just go full speed just to
- 42:12Speaker 2: piss them off. Then he'd start going full speed. We
- 42:14Speaker 2: did that before the Super Bowl one year. You know,
- 42:16Speaker 2: It's like end of one of the practice and we're
- 42:18Speaker 2: conditioning just to get a little extra running in light.
- 42:20Speaker 2: But I'm like, I'm feeling good, man, Like I don't.
- 42:22Speaker 2: I don't play that much. I'm feeling great, So I
- 42:24Speaker 2: just take off full speed. And so the next rep
- 42:26Speaker 2: we do, Jerry and John Taylor must have winked at
- 42:29Speaker 2: each other and all right, you're gonna go full speed.
- 42:30Speaker 2: So they start running full speed just in this after
- 42:33Speaker 2: practice condition I just hear coach Shannan go stop. I'm panicking.
- 42:39Speaker 2: He's like, we don't need Jerry to pull a hammy.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Like the week before the Super Bowl, I know it
- 42:44Speaker 2: wasn't because of me. He didn't care if I pulled
- 42:46Speaker 2: a hammy, But it was just funny. But I liked
- 42:49Speaker 2: pushing him. But Jerry would never shy away from a challenge.
- 42:52Speaker 2: That guy was so competitive. It was he's still competitive.
- 42:55Speaker 2: He still let the games running around totally dialed into
- 42:57Speaker 2: what's going on by five in people like he's just
- 43:00Speaker 2: tired that way. Do you ever get that slant route? Yeah,
- 43:02Speaker 2: yeah he did. He did won a couple. Well, when
- 43:05Speaker 2: you have a whole season of practice, you better win
- 43:07Speaker 2: at least one slant rup.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Any good ship talking stories with Dion.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Dion, you know he was the greatest teammate. He didn't
- 43:13Speaker 2: he didn't talk smack ever in practice.
- 43:15Speaker 1: What about in the game, like you witness just been
- 43:17Speaker 1: on the sideline and seeing Dion work, Well.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I saw Dion. You know they they tested him a
- 43:22Speaker 2: couple of times earlier in the season, and once against
- 43:24Speaker 2: Atlanta they tested him and you know he had played there,
- 43:27Speaker 2: and he high stepped from the fifty yard line all
- 43:29Speaker 2: the way to the goal line while looking on the
- 43:32Speaker 2: sidelines holding the ball up in the air. I'm like,
- 43:34Speaker 2: oh my, like not too many humans can do that.
- 43:38Speaker 2: And the fact that he did against his old team.
- 43:40Speaker 2: It was just absolutely insane.
- 43:42Speaker 1: That's all time, uh going to uh you know, your
- 43:46Speaker 1: next your next super Bowl. But Denver's like John Elwie's
- 43:50Speaker 1: first super Bowl. He was like oher and three going
- 43:52Speaker 1: into that game against the Packers, correct, and that was
- 43:56Speaker 1: his first super Bowl, right, it was Yeah, What's what's
- 43:59Speaker 1: funny is I was like looking up. I was looking
- 44:01Speaker 1: up this game and the Packers were favored by eleven
- 44:04Speaker 1: points going to the super Bowl, going in the super Bowl.
- 44:06Speaker 2: When you got I think it was super Bowl in
- 44:08Speaker 2: the beginning of the week it was fourteen and then
- 44:10Speaker 2: we stopped paying attention to it. But we had we
- 44:12Speaker 2: had an agreement we're not going to talk about it.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And you mentioned Shannon earlier in the episode. Shannon's a
- 44:18Speaker 2: talker and for him not to talk any smack for
- 44:22Speaker 2: two weeks is a minor miracle. I couldn't believe you
- 44:25Speaker 2: didn't say anything. But we were dialed in the year
- 44:28Speaker 2: before we lost to Jacksonville at home, and we were
- 44:31Speaker 2: the better team, where we were the best team in
- 44:33Speaker 2: the NFL right until we weren't. You know, we got
- 44:35Speaker 2: upset by Jacksonville at home. They went on an incredible
- 44:37Speaker 2: run when like five games in a row they beat
- 44:40Speaker 2: us at home. But we were fourteen and two, thought
- 44:42Speaker 2: we were the best team in the league. Took one
- 44:43Speaker 2: bad game to get knocked out. So that next year
- 44:46Speaker 2: we were just totally dialed. You know. We went on
- 44:48Speaker 2: the road every game. We had to go to Kansas
- 44:50Speaker 2: City and Pittsburgh when games on the road against really
- 44:52Speaker 2: good teams with great coaches, and we found a way
- 44:55Speaker 2: to do it. So by the time we got to
- 44:56Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, there's no there's nothing to say. Let's
- 44:59Speaker 2: just go get it done. Nobody said a word in
- 45:02Speaker 2: the beginning of the week. We were fourteen point underdogs,
- 45:04Speaker 2: but we had all the confidence in the world. We
- 45:07Speaker 2: thought we should have won the Super Bowl the year before,
- 45:09Speaker 2: but because we didn't and got upset by Jackson, well,
- 45:11Speaker 2: people kind of forgot about us and they were like
- 45:13Speaker 2: Green Bay had won the Super Bowl the year before.
- 45:15Speaker 2: They were the favorite, and they were a great team.
- 45:18Speaker 2: I mean, they had Hall of famers on their team.
- 45:19Speaker 2: But there was no doubt in our mind. I can't
- 45:21Speaker 2: you guys have been around teams where you're confident and
- 45:24Speaker 2: it's not false bravado. It's like we're really confident, like
- 45:27Speaker 2: we believed we would win and we did against a
- 45:30Speaker 2: great team.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Never made the chance to get go to a super
- 45:32Speaker 3: Bowl though, which is heartbreaking. Oh we were two quarters
- 45:35Speaker 3: away against the Chief, Yeah, twenty nineteen.
- 45:38Speaker 2: That's why great players not all. I mean a lot
- 45:40Speaker 2: of great players never get to one or get to
- 45:42Speaker 2: one and don't win one.
- 45:43Speaker 3: And it's mahomes, it is forty five running around on
- 45:47Speaker 3: a two minute drill.
- 45:47Speaker 2: We would have got it. It's not about me, though.
- 45:49Speaker 2: It feels a lot light, but no, you know the
- 45:51Speaker 2: feeling like you know exactly how hard it is to
- 45:53Speaker 2: get to these games and win them. There's no guarantees, right,
- 45:55Speaker 2: and it's hard work. It's determinations having all the right players,
- 45:58Speaker 2: it's the coaches making the right cause. Some of it's
- 46:01Speaker 2: the way the ball bounces, too.
- 46:02Speaker 3: And it's not just like like you think in high
- 46:05Speaker 3: school when you're playing, it's like, oh, we'll get them
- 46:06Speaker 3: next year.
- 46:06Speaker 2: We'll get them next year.
- 46:07Speaker 3: And then once you in the NFL for a couple
- 46:08Speaker 3: of years and you taste a little bit of like
- 46:09Speaker 3: playoff success, you think, all right, next year, we're gonna
- 46:13Speaker 3: get over the hump and it's like that's not always
- 46:14Speaker 3: the case. Sometimes you guys just might suck. There'll be
- 46:16Speaker 3: a lot of turnover on the team, and so you
- 46:18Speaker 3: have to like take advantage of those opportunities while they're there. Yeah,
- 46:21Speaker 3: we were the one seed in Here I go again.
- 46:23Speaker 2: There.
- 46:23Speaker 3: We were the one seed in twenty one and we
- 46:25Speaker 3: got upset by the Bengals, and it was like we
- 46:27Speaker 3: really thought like this is the year. Like we just
- 46:28Speaker 3: Derek Henry came back all that. We're like, this is
- 46:31Speaker 3: really going to be the year that the Titans win
- 46:33Speaker 3: the Super Bowl.
- 46:33Speaker 2: I played on a team like that in New York
- 46:35Speaker 2: my first year. They just won the Super Bowl. That
- 46:38Speaker 2: was the year they beat the Bills. They held on
- 46:39Speaker 2: to the ball for like forty nine minutes, right, they
- 46:41Speaker 2: beat the They beat the Bills in the Super Bowl,
- 46:43Speaker 2: and I'm with all those legends, Lawrence Taylor and Phil
- 46:46Speaker 2: Simms and you know, Oj Anderson was the MVP of
- 46:50Speaker 2: that game, and they had a lot of the same
- 46:51Speaker 2: guys back. And the expectation going into that season is
- 46:54Speaker 2: we're going to win the Super Bowl again. We just
- 46:56Speaker 2: want it. We're gonna win it again. Yeah, and we
- 46:58Speaker 2: finished eight and eight, where it was do.
- 47:00Speaker 1: You gotta I was just gonna ask if you had
- 47:02Speaker 1: an iconic Lawrence Taylor story.
- 47:06Speaker 2: There's so many iconic Lawrence Taylor stories. I'll share one
- 47:09Speaker 2: with you. You know. It was frowned upon to hold
- 47:11Speaker 2: out during training camp, but I was a third round
- 47:13Speaker 2: draft pick and held out for like eight days. So
- 47:15Speaker 2: when I finally get there, it's in Fairley Dickinson University,
- 47:18Speaker 2: and you know, there's the old wooden lockers and they
- 47:21Speaker 2: have like your name and tape with a sharpie written
- 47:24Speaker 2: on the top of these wooden locker you know, ad
- 47:26Speaker 2: hoc lockers they made at Fairly Dickenson University's you know,
- 47:30Speaker 2: basketball gym, auxiliary gym. And I'm walking through. These guys
- 47:33Speaker 2: already been through a week of practice, and it's hot
- 47:35Speaker 2: and humid and Fairly Dickinson in New Jersey in August.
- 47:37Speaker 2: So I'm walking through. You know, it's the locker room,
- 47:39Speaker 2: smells like locker room. Keep walking through. I look up
- 47:42Speaker 2: at my locker and my name is spelled wrong, of
- 47:44Speaker 2: course on my locker. But I sit down and sure
- 47:46Speaker 2: enough I'm between Lawrence Taylor and Carl Banks. I'm like, okay,
- 47:50Speaker 2: I'm the receiver from Stanford. How do I get between
- 47:52Speaker 2: two all pro linebackers. And I sit down and they
- 47:55Speaker 2: were just finishing their first practice. But back then, like
- 47:58Speaker 2: as soon as you sign get out to practice, so
- 47:59Speaker 2: they just finished the first practice. I'm like, making sure
- 48:01Speaker 2: all my equipment's there. I sit down. Lawrence's lockers just disaster.
- 48:05Speaker 2: It was a messy locker. There's stories about, you know,
- 48:07Speaker 2: the equipment guy's finding game checks in the bottom of
- 48:09Speaker 2: the locker. They didn't even know we're there, things like that.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I found out about that later. But anyway, I sit
- 48:13Speaker 2: down and you know, they both come back and I'm like,
- 48:16Speaker 2: Lawrence Taylor just sat next to me, Like I already
- 48:18Speaker 2: know Lawrence Taylor. He's famous already right for on in
- 48:21Speaker 2: off field. And then the other guy you knows, Carl Banks.
- 48:24Speaker 2: He's like six six, you know, NFL Pro Bowl linebacker,
- 48:27Speaker 2: they just won the Super Bowl. And Lawrence is like,
- 48:31Speaker 2: hey man, anyone's seeing my cleat? He was like missing
- 48:33Speaker 2: a cleat or something. And Carl's like, no, man, I
- 48:37Speaker 2: think this dude took it. And I've never met them.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I don't even you know, haven't formally been introduced. And
- 48:41Speaker 2: they both stand up as I'm sitting in my locker
- 48:44Speaker 2: and they're just towering over me. They're like, hey, man,
- 48:46Speaker 2: you got my cleat and they're not messing around, like
- 48:48Speaker 2: it seems like they're just going to beat the crap
- 48:50Speaker 2: out of me on day one, and I'm thinking, my
- 48:52Speaker 2: first day in the NFL is my last day in
- 48:54Speaker 2: the NFL. And then he's like, ah, I'm just messing
- 48:57Speaker 2: with you and slaps me on the back super hard,
- 48:59Speaker 2: and I'm like, what your happened? That's my I just
- 49:01Speaker 2: got here having met these guys.
- 49:03Speaker 1: Yea in the yeah, the.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Minutes, lord, Yeah, thank the Lord. They were kidding around,
- 49:08Speaker 2: but he was smart. He had an incredible sense of humor.
- 49:11Speaker 2: He was very funny dude, and he was a great teammate.
- 49:13Speaker 2: But in games, I do believe he's the greatest defender
- 49:18Speaker 2: of all time. Like I watched him in games and
- 49:19Speaker 2: tackles would just quiver, Like You're like you, dude, you
- 49:21Speaker 2: got to help me out. Put a tight end over here,
- 49:23Speaker 2: running back something. Don't leave me one on one with
- 49:26Speaker 2: his dude, because he's just one of those guys like
- 49:28Speaker 2: when he walks in the room, he's the alpha, and
- 49:31Speaker 2: nobody questions it. Oh yeah, that's LT. That's the alpha. Yeah,
- 49:35Speaker 2: and he's one of those guys in the weight room.
- 49:38Speaker 2: He just had like that natural I don't know if
- 49:40Speaker 2: you want to call it like Dad's strength, that you
- 49:42Speaker 2: would call it. Where he'd walk in and I never
- 49:44Speaker 2: really saw him lift a lot, but when he did,
- 49:45Speaker 2: I'm like that dude's pushing like ridiculous weight and this
- 49:49Speaker 2: is the first time I've seen him lift. Is he
- 49:50Speaker 2: lift at home or something? Like where's he working out?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Like right? And uh, you know, he's like six five
- 49:57Speaker 2: two fifty something, runs under four or five. You know,
- 50:00Speaker 2: they had clips of him as rookie running down as
- 50:02Speaker 2: the gunner, just out running DB's to tackle the punt
- 50:05Speaker 2: returner and he's just a specimen. Some guys just have
- 50:08Speaker 2: it all, man. He also had also another LT story.
- 50:11Speaker 2: He remember one game, not all players are treated the same,
- 50:13Speaker 2: you know that, right, So like if this happened to me,
- 50:15Speaker 2: I would have been cutting a second. But yeah, I
- 50:18Speaker 2: guess he was, like I don't know what the story was,
- 50:20Speaker 2: why he was later what happened to his car, But
- 50:22Speaker 2: he comes running out during the national anthem where they're
- 50:25Speaker 2: you know, they're playing the national anthem and out of
- 50:27Speaker 2: the corner of my eye, I see this guy running
- 50:29Speaker 2: onto the field, his jersey halfway on, like trying to
- 50:32Speaker 2: get the rest of his jersey on his shoulder pads,
- 50:34Speaker 2: runs out during the national anthem, like missed the pre game,
- 50:37Speaker 2: missed everything, and then totally had a sack on the
- 50:40Speaker 2: first defensive possession. Like it's like he didn't even need
- 50:44Speaker 2: to warm up, Like he just showed up right before
- 50:46Speaker 2: the game, gets a sack, like nothing ever happened, Like
- 50:48Speaker 2: you missed the whole pregame. Nobody said anything to nobody
- 50:50Speaker 2: said a word.
- 50:52Speaker 3: That's like the ultimate nightmare when you're playing sports, is
- 50:55Speaker 3: like you have a dream that you're supposed to get
- 50:57Speaker 3: to the game, but you can't get to the game,
- 50:58Speaker 3: and like the national is going on, and you're like
- 51:00Speaker 3: trying to get dressed as fast as possible. But what
- 51:02Speaker 3: would happen to most people, Right, Yeah, you're getting chewed out,
- 51:04Speaker 3: you're probably getting benched, window or ile. Right, yeah, you're
- 51:07Speaker 3: out of here, whereas lt okay tar up Man, get
- 51:09Speaker 3: your jersey on and your it's third.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Reuyser helping um keeping the jersey, thank god, thank god.
- 51:16Speaker 2: No, but he was I mean, I was blessed to
- 51:18Speaker 2: play with so many great players, and he was one
- 51:19Speaker 2: of them. Like to play with somebody who's considered the
- 51:22Speaker 2: greatest of his position or what you know, if not
- 51:24Speaker 2: the greatest defensive player of all time, And I got
- 51:26Speaker 2: to play with that guy. Was pretty cool.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Boys and girls, I know you're looking at my hair
- 51:30Speaker 3: right now and you're thinking yourself, damn, maybe I want
- 51:33Speaker 3: something like that. Well, I got something for you, dude,

- 52:20Speaker 2: You're gonna slash yourself.
- 52:21Speaker 1: Dude.
- 52:21Speaker 3: You showed a lot of humility. Obviously when we introduced you,
- 52:23Speaker 3: we start clapping for you. You start clapping as well. Here's
- 52:25Speaker 3: a team guy, through and through. I was watching a
- 52:28Speaker 3: video with the Broncos and there was like one of
- 52:30Speaker 3: the reporters, somebody that works with the Broncos, and they're
- 52:32Speaker 3: asking you your top three favorite plays as a Bronco.
- 52:36Speaker 3: Two of those three plays, you weren't even the one
- 52:39Speaker 3: making the catch or anything. One was a victory formation
- 52:41Speaker 3: and when was you watching a teammates score a touchdown? No,
- 52:43Speaker 3: you're gonna win the Super Bowl? And then third one
- 52:45Speaker 3: obviously it was a great catch by you in the Inzon.
- 52:47Speaker 3: But what what are your three favorite plays of all
- 52:51Speaker 3: time that you were like the main receiver.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Four? Oh gosh, I don't even know you mentioned the
- 52:55Speaker 2: victory formation that was Super Bowl thirty two is the
- 52:57Speaker 2: Broncos for Super Bowl And I got to be that
- 53:00Speaker 2: point of the v in the back and just watching
- 53:02Speaker 2: the clock just slowly picks late down to zero. Man,
- 53:05Speaker 2: I think about it almost every day. It was like
- 53:07Speaker 2: the greatest experience of all time and just family running
- 53:10Speaker 2: onto the field and just John always crying and laughing
- 53:12Speaker 2: at the same time as just the first Super Bowl
- 53:15Speaker 2: den for ever won and what a blessing to be
- 53:16Speaker 2: part of that. Like, you know, I'd won one super
- 53:18Speaker 2: Bowl the Niners was kind of a backup role, but
- 53:21Speaker 2: it was such a cool thing to win a Super
- 53:22Speaker 2: Bowl with my teammates. But this one was like incredible.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I mean to see the look on Broncos fans' faces.
- 53:27Speaker 2: So many had like generationally gone to games with their
- 53:30Speaker 2: dad or uncles or families, and some of them had passed.
- 53:33Speaker 2: And then finally the Broncos win, and John fought his
- 53:35Speaker 2: whole career for that, and we worked so hard and
- 53:37Speaker 2: we were such big underdogs, right, I mean, that was
- 53:40Speaker 2: that's tough to beat. You're not gonna beat that one,
- 53:43Speaker 2: you know. I don't know. I remember some of the
- 53:44Speaker 2: plays I made. I don't remember all of them. People
- 53:46Speaker 2: sometimes remind me of plays I don't remember making because
- 53:50Speaker 2: it was always, you know, make a play, turn the
- 53:51Speaker 2: page onto the next. So I don't know. I don't
- 53:54Speaker 2: have favorite plays of myself. I have favorite memories, and
- 53:57Speaker 2: usually you know those around the big games Super Bowls.
- 54:00Speaker 2: The one you mentioned about Rod Smith called a touchdown
- 54:03Speaker 2: against Atlanta that was such a big pivotal play in
- 54:05Speaker 2: our game that helped us win. And I get to
- 54:07Speaker 2: see that play because I was you know, he was
- 54:09Speaker 2: in front of me, and I get to like chase
- 54:10Speaker 2: him down the field and watch him score. But so
- 54:13Speaker 2: much that happens in those games you don't see, right
- 54:15Speaker 2: you're doing your job. You don't see what everyone else
- 54:17Speaker 2: is doing unless you go back and watch the film.
- 54:19Speaker 2: And one of the interesting things about Super Bowls is
- 54:21Speaker 2: the season's over after that game, So I've probably watched
- 54:24Speaker 2: those games less than any other games. That's awesome.
- 54:27Speaker 3: If somebody not answering your question, It's my favorite thing
- 54:29Speaker 3: that's ever happened. That's my favorite episode ever.
- 54:32Speaker 2: If you put them all up on it, I pick them.
- 54:34Speaker 2: If you put them up, I don't even I don't
- 54:36Speaker 2: remember half of them.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Really.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess there was a good, good one against
- 54:39Speaker 2: Green Bay. Anyone that was longer than second touchdown, Yeah,
- 54:44Speaker 2: that would be fun. But no, I don't really, I
- 54:47Speaker 2: don't put them in order. I loved all of them.
- 54:49Speaker 2: Even the blocks, even even blocking in the run game.
- 54:51Speaker 2: Like one of my favorite feelings was if TD flew
- 54:54Speaker 2: past me and like I knew, I took care of
- 54:57Speaker 2: my guy, like I played tackle right, Like we're kindre
- 55:00Speaker 2: spirits here. So as a receiver, Hell yeah, I wouldn't.
- 55:02Speaker 2: I wouldn't have got on the field if I didn't block,
- 55:04Speaker 2: Like that's how I got on the field. That's how
- 55:06Speaker 2: Rod Smith got on the field. So we'd have like
- 55:08Speaker 2: these little side bets five ten bucks. Dude, I bet
- 55:10Speaker 2: I have more decleaders than you. They saying, hell no,
- 55:12Speaker 2: you won't have more decleaders than me. And then we'd like,
- 55:14Speaker 2: let's get our team, let's get our head coach Mike
- 55:16Speaker 2: Shanahan to stop the tape because he's going to have
- 55:18Speaker 2: to because we're going to declete somebody in this game.
- 55:20Speaker 2: And we would just literally go for decleaders, not just
- 55:23Speaker 2: not just blocks. Yeah, five or ten bucks. I'm like,
- 55:26Speaker 2: uh yeah, he was undrafted, I little light.
- 55:30Speaker 1: He's like in the middle of career going on to
- 55:32Speaker 1: a super Bowl. You know.
- 55:33Speaker 2: It's funny though it didn't take more than that. All right,
- 55:36Speaker 2: you're on, man, let's do it. It was more of
- 55:37Speaker 2: the pride thing right. The money was nothing, but it
- 55:41Speaker 2: was so fun. And that was your My first year
- 55:42Speaker 2: with the Broncos, I didn't play that much, but competing
- 55:45Speaker 2: with Rod to get decleaders and just the feeling you
- 55:49Speaker 2: get when you're head coach, when you're not one of
- 55:52Speaker 2: the main guys on the team, you're not a starter,
- 55:53Speaker 2: you're backup. When he stops the film in front of
- 55:55Speaker 2: the whole team after the game, he said, oh, wait
- 55:57Speaker 2: a minute, who's that Orally, let's check this out. Well, yeah,
- 56:00Speaker 2: there we go. Right, We just look at each other
- 56:02Speaker 2: like all right. It was just such a fun feeling. Man,
- 56:05Speaker 2: ball was fun. That's the best I feel like.
- 56:09Speaker 3: I was just gonna say in a team meeting, when
- 56:10Speaker 3: you when there's literally a pause and a highlight on
- 56:13Speaker 3: you and you get to go watch it through and
- 56:15Speaker 3: the pride that just goes to your body, and then
- 56:16Speaker 3: on the flip side the low light, you're just like,
- 56:20Speaker 3: please God, I had.
- 56:21Speaker 2: One of those two. And you're right, it's the worst
- 56:23Speaker 2: feeling in the world. You just feel like you've let
- 56:24Speaker 2: everybody down and they don't. You know, Coach Shanahan would
- 56:27Speaker 2: never embarrass you. He doesn't call people out to embarrass them,
- 56:30Speaker 2: but he like want, he has high expectations. So we
- 56:32Speaker 2: think we had a gam against Cleveland where we lost
- 56:34Speaker 2: and that happened to me, and you're right, I'm thinking,
- 56:37Speaker 2: you know, I played pretty well. I had a pretty
- 56:39Speaker 2: good game. Actually statistically it was one of my better games.
- 56:42Speaker 2: And he's like, well, guys, this is what we need
- 56:44Speaker 2: to do to get better. And I'm like clipping number three,
- 56:47Speaker 2: like diving for a ball in the back of the
- 56:49Speaker 2: end zone then went off my fingertips and even to
- 56:51Speaker 2: this day, I'm like, I don't know if I could
- 56:52Speaker 2: have caught it. But he's like, these are the plays
- 56:53Speaker 2: we have to make. And I'm like, I'm like, you
- 57:00Speaker 2: know something about when you do an offense, it's one thing,
- 57:02Speaker 2: but when the whole team's in there, like the defenses
- 57:04Speaker 2: in there, the other side of the ball, all the coaches,
- 57:06Speaker 2: it's like you, I mean, you feel like you let
- 57:08Speaker 2: your team down. You feel sick to your stomach. But
- 57:10Speaker 2: it's done in a professional way, and it just make
- 57:12Speaker 2: sure that you don't exhale right nobody, Hey, even if
- 57:15Speaker 2: you had a good game, you have a play in
- 57:16Speaker 2: this game where you could have done better that could
- 57:18Speaker 2: have been the difference in the game. We need to
- 57:20Speaker 2: make these plays to win, and that was the expectation.
- 57:22Speaker 2: But you're right, the feeling you get is just nausea. Yeah, yeah,
- 57:26Speaker 2: I feel like it.
- 57:27Speaker 1: I felt like coach Shane and he always he probably
- 57:30Speaker 1: is probably obviously throughout his career, but I felt like
- 57:33Speaker 1: he always did a good job of calling out, you know,
- 57:35Speaker 1: calling out guys in team meetings and hyping them up,
- 57:38Speaker 1: and whether it's the low lights, having the teaching moments
- 57:40Speaker 1: and everything else, but he would always like spotlight guys
- 57:43Speaker 1: basically in all of our team meetings, like every day.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Like I remember my first call out. I was just
- 57:47Speaker 1: on practice squad and I played it sucked. I had
- 57:50Speaker 1: to full back, tight end, linebacker, and he I got
- 57:53Speaker 1: to stand up and he's just talking about, you know,
- 57:55Speaker 1: all the different things that I would have to do
- 57:57Speaker 1: and everything else, and I just remember it was like
- 57:58Speaker 1: the best feeling in the world. Later that day, after practice,
- 58:01Speaker 1: he tried talking me into fullback and gave me some
- 58:03Speaker 1: run around story about how some linebacker went to fullback
- 58:07Speaker 1: in Denver. And from that moment I intentionally played poorly
- 58:10Speaker 1: as a fullback because I did not want to go
- 58:12Speaker 1: to the offensive side of the ball.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think you have a good feel for
- 58:16Speaker 2: how Kyle Shanahan coaches because he does it in a
- 58:19Speaker 2: very similar way. He speaks to every position on the team.
- 58:21Speaker 2: But as you tell me, it's a defensive player. When
- 58:24Speaker 2: your head coaches, your offensive coordinator knows your job and
- 58:28Speaker 2: your responsibility and talks about it in front of the
- 58:30Speaker 2: whole team, does that gain him a little extra respect
- 58:34Speaker 2: than a coach that might be a figurehead who isn't
- 58:36Speaker 2: sure exactly what you're doing on your side of the ball.
- 58:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I felt like Shanahan because he would float around
- 58:41Speaker 1: all the different position meetings as well, and I felt
- 58:45Speaker 1: like he had just as good of a grass defensively
- 58:47Speaker 1: as he did offensively. But yeah, when you'd get a
- 58:49Speaker 1: call out like that or understanding like okay, he knows
- 58:52Speaker 1: all these things that are going on, it was like
- 58:54Speaker 1: it was cool because when we were like growing up
- 58:57Speaker 1: like Denver, I mean we were like what ten to
- 58:59Speaker 1: eleven when all when those team were win those championships,
- 59:02Speaker 1: So you guys were like, you know, in front of everybody,
- 59:04Speaker 1: like you just remember the Shannon Sharfs of Trell Davis
- 59:07Speaker 1: d Ed McCaffrey's and uh, coach Shanahan being that Super
- 59:10Speaker 1: Bowl winning coach, So getting that one year was just
- 59:13Speaker 1: super cool because you'd see him on TV all the time.
- 59:15Speaker 1: It's like, oh, this dude's you, this dud's your head coach. Yeah,
- 59:18Speaker 1: I'm glad you got a feel for that, because that's
- 59:19Speaker 1: the Kyle. You know, he made this team his own
- 59:21Speaker 1: and like things have changed offensively scheme wise, but he
- 59:25Speaker 1: takes the same approach. And then I have to be
- 59:27Speaker 1: a football coach. I have to know everybody's assignment. I'm
- 59:29Speaker 1: gonna watch every position meeting. I'm gonna know offense, defense,
- 59:32Speaker 1: special teams. I'm gonna have team meetings where I talk
- 59:34Speaker 1: about offense, defense and special teams in front of everybody.
- 59:37Speaker 3: M H.
- 59:38Speaker 2: And I think, I think what it does when you
- 59:40Speaker 2: have a coach like that, it makes everyone kind of
- 59:42Speaker 2: sit up a little straighter. It makes everyone respect him
- 59:44Speaker 2: because they know he knows their assignment, you know, on
- 59:47Speaker 2: their site the ball and uh and they they believe
- 59:50Speaker 2: in them and they trust in them. And I think
- 59:52Speaker 2: that's what you're seeing with the forty nine.
- 59:53Speaker 1: Ers earlier when you were talking about your uh that
- 59:57Speaker 1: first Bronco Super Bowl. The way you guys felt like
- 59:59Speaker 1: should have won the year before, going fourteen to two,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: you lose one to Jacksonville, and there was just that
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: confidence of like, hey, there's nothing to say, we got
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: to go out win the Super Bowl. Do that matter
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: if you guys were eleven point underdogs. I feel like
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: that's a very similar situation around right now with the Niners.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Like you go in you lost Brock last year against
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: the Eagles, like you were a team that you probably
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: felt like, oh, we're going to do it this year,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: and then you don't. I feel like that expectation for
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: the forty nine ers this year is like, hey, there's
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: like nothing to say, like we have to take care of.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: Business against the Chiefs. Yeah, there's I mean there's no
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: talking doesn't do anything right. And I think you know,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: the Chiefs have been to a few Super Bowls, right,
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: they're the same way. It's like, hey, they know that
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: nothing you say is going to make a difference. You
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: got to go out and play. And I think the
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: forty nine ers understand that. I do think you know,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: when you have a young quarterback in different players on
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: your team, it doesn't mean something. When you know if
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: you lose a championship game, because your quarterback got hurt.
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: And then you play the same team week thirteen, and
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: then you go out and beat them pretty good. I
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: think that builds confidence, right. I think when you're down
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: seventeen in the championship game and you're like, we're facing
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: the biggest comeback in championship history, and then you come
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: back and win the game, it does give you some confidence.
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: And I think when you get into the big, big game,
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: the Super Bowl, right, you do draw on that. Hey,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: no matter what the score is, we're never out of this.
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: So no matter how this unfolds, you believe in yourself.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: We don't need to change what we're doing. We've been
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: here before. You hope everything goes well and you got
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: the lead and everything goes great the whole game. But
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: if it doesn't, you don't blink. You don't have to
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: change what you're doing.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Yeah, and they also haven't put four quarters together yet,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: like they have not done in the play sixteen minutes
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: of football, coming together a couple of years ago, losing
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: too the same team, like this is just breeding a
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: like a get back year.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Let's hope they do it this this game, right, Let's
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: put it all together this week because defensively. If we
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: can put the second half of Green Bay in the
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: second half Detroit together in that one game defensively, then
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: offensively take the second half and put that together, it
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: would be one heck of a game. But I'm looking
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: forward to it. Man, It's going to be a close game.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Two great teams. You know, Kansas City is looking at
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: a dynasty. There's nothing to say. You just got to
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: go and play ball.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen. We know up with this episode to

- 1:02:37Speaker 3: You can see me sit on this thing right now,
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: and you think yourself, damn, that's a good looking couch.
- 1:02:40Speaker 3: And he's already said he's comfortable. I might have to
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: double down on that. With that being said, let's get
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: back to this episode. Big hugs and tiny kisses.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: What's the prediction? I never I never predicted anything. I
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: think this one give a prediction. This is my prediction.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: It's going to be a hell of a game, and
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: it's going to be close, and it's going to be
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: hard fought, and the team that makes the most plays
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: at the end of the day will win it.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: But so what's your prediction? I close game, Niners on top.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: You know, as as if this was if I didn't
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: have a kid playing in it, I'd feel free making
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: a prediction. But whenever I watch my kids games, it's like, look,
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: I'm a dad. Now, I'm taking off my coach's cap
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: putting on my dad's cap. I love you, I'm here,
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: free no matter what me cheering for you on game
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: day and uh, and you know, hopefully it goes well.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: Do we got a dad hat for him? It would
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: have been greaty we just throw on the old Yeah.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: Well also, I just got a package at the room
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: that came in. I have a whole bunch of dad
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: hats and bust and Mark.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: I just picture him just saying that I take off
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: my coach and then he just all of a sudden,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: dat Yeah.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. Yeah, put your dad hat on. No,
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: but it's it's tough man, because you uh, you know,
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: anything I say, thank you, I love it. Yeah, I
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: am honored I earned a dad hat. Yeah, thank you.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: But you know, if I say anything, it'll be repeated.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: So I'm hope. I think it's two great teams. What
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: are you going to do? You guys have played ball.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: You came so close, right, and you been a lot
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: in a lot of games, won some, loss some and
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: you know, we've watched a lot of Super Bowls. So
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I'm hoping the forty nine ers, like you said, put
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: two halves together and get it done. But I played
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: in too many games, one too many, lost too many
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: to make predictions.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Can you talk about the Christian McCaffrey Foundation.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: Yeah, he started that a few years ago and it
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: started out helping military families. He is so invested in
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: helping military families and from you know, military men and
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: women that come back and need help after they've served
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: our country to helping their families. And I know right
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: now there's some specific things he's trying to do to
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: help them recover and take care of their bodies and
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: deal with their physical issues that he's trying to help
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: them with, especially you know, some of the rangers in
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: high level military personnel, and so it started out helping them,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: and it's kind of expanded to also helping out children
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: in hospitals across the country. You know, he had this kid, Logan,
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: who's not no longer with us, just incredible kid who
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: was in the hospital and the children's ward, and all
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: he wanted to do was play video games with his friends.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: But you're sequestered, you're away from your friends, and there's
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: it's really hard to play video games online with everybody,
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: and maybe the hospitals didn't have those units. So he
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: created the Logan Bowl last year where kids and hospitals
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: around the country could play with their friends on these
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: consoles and so that's a really really cool thing that
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: he did as well. So it means a lot to
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: him to give back. You know, Logan was buried in
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Christian's jersey in Carolina, and he had he had such like, dude,
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: when that happens, like it's tugging on your heartstrings. It
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: had such an impact on Christian. I mean, he had
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: more influence on Christian than Christian had on him. But
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: like in his name, he wants to continue to be
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: able to give kids that experience when they're hospitalized, for them,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: for their families. And so he had a Logan Bowl
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: last year where a bunch of NFL guys competed online
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: in this little playoffs and and it was a lot
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: of fun. But supporting military families and supporting you know,
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: kids in hospitals across the country's always been really important
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: to him. That's awesome.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I know, you guys. You also have some youth football,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: some youth football camps.
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been doing a camp, gosh since my kids
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: were little. Originally it was just for them and their bodies,
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: just rolled a ball in the park and started getting
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: more and more kids together all down. Yeah, let's play
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: ball and then over the years, I just realized there's
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: so many kids. I never went to a football camp
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: growing up. I played basketball, never even went to a
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: football camp. Started playing a high school, played little league football,
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: but just signed up for my team. Never went to
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: a camp to learn how to play football, and never
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: learned speed training or sports performance. I'd like to teach
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: some of these kids some of the stuff I learned
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: over the years that might not have access to this
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: type of stuff. So we bring in Lauren Lando and
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: his sports performance staff. He was the sports trainer for
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: the Broncos for a number of years, of strength coach
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: and now he's at Notre Dame. But we'd bring in
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: him and his crew and they teach him speed training,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: Like you know, a lot of kids didn't learn that
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: back when I was growing up. I'm like, I want
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: them to learn about speed training. And then we'd bring
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: in celebrity NFL coaches and players to talk to the
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: kids about their experience and about you know, the importance
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: of staying in school and getting good grades, and they'd
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: share their stories. And then a lot of high school
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: and college and NFL coaches love to coach. Some of
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: these guys are no longer coaching, but they love ball.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: And so between teaching the kids the game in a
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: very safe way, teaching them speed training, letting them here
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: from motivational speakers, helping the coaches who want to coach,
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: you know, work for four days in the summer. It's
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: just to feel good for me. I just love doing it.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Overnight camp, No, it's a four day day camp, and
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: we have two camps during the same four days. We
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: have an Elite camp, which is for athletes that really
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: want to learn one specific position, so you know, older
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: kids but still under eighth grade, and then an open
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: camp for anybody, and we bring in a lot of
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: kids from the Boys and Girls Club and other organizations,
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: kids from military families, and you don't have to have
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: ever played football before. There's no pads. It's seven on
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: seven and skill training and speed training.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: That's cool. If kids were interested in going to one
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: of those, where could they find on.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: That sports eddie dot Com. It's sports Eddie, Yeah, sports Eddie,
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: but it's s p R T s E D d
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: Y sports like an eddie, like if you're a fisherman. Okay,
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: sports Eddie dot Com. We've been doing camp for like
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: over twenty years and it's the highlight of my summer.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I enjoy it every June seventeenth through the twentieth. This year,
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: kids flying from out out of state. Some of my
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: old high school buddies bring their kids from Pennsylvania, and
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: a lot of people vacation in Colorado and they'll mark
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: their calendars for that week just so their kids can
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: have some fun playing ball.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that is really cool, man.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: You got anything else?
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I do not, JP, Mitch, anybody got anything for mister McCaffrey.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: The only way for Christian to win the Super Bowl
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: was for you to lose all yours?
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: Would you do it? So?
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: JP just asked if.
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: Here go ahead, JP, if the only way, if the
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: only way for Christian to win a super Bowl would
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: be you lose all of yours.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not good. I'm not getting in these hypotheticals.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: But you got to answer that question. That question. I
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: don't have to answer that question. You don't have to.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you guys think you can take.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: You're right that you care more about your kids than
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: you care about yourself, at least I do, like so,
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: I want I want so badly for him to have
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: success and to win. But I don't you know, you know,
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: I got my friends and my teammates and Christians experience
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: back then in my family. And but I would I
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: would pay, you know, I would give up a lot
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: for him to be able to have that experience, including
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: just not your Super Bowl rings. I will give them
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: all three of the Marty trophies in my office, uh,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: for him to win this one. Yeah, let's do it.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: I tell you what, I know you do that progudgingly.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: So thank you for dealing with us. No, no, it
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: is man, it's I'm telling you. It changes your world.
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: You've seen some like gymnastics or ballet or something like that,
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: and you watch your kids run around like what wouldn't
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: you do for your kids?
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: I know, man, it is. It is really cool. Man,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Thanks a lot for coming on. This was this is
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: all the time. I couldn't wait whenever we booked you,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: we couldn't wait until see him, Like, hey man, we
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: got your old man, it's coming on.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: I got my phones right here.
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: I texted him. I said we got you on, and
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: all I said it was big ed that's it. Yeah, big,
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: not a lot of words anything for me, Like we
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: can get you like cooking going. He's like big ed,
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: it's awesome.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: He's focused.
- 1:10:23Speaker 3: He's he's focused. He's not I'll tell you what he Yeah,
- 1:10:26Speaker 3: because the NFC Championship game, he had that hit towards
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: the end zone where he kind of went off the
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: head a little bit, and I was like, hey man,
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: that like you could see him kind of like looking around,
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: give me one and you only see Christian.
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Do they give me one thing? Ever?
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: So I text him after the game. I was like,
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: hey man, saw the hit. Hope you're all good. Good
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: luck in a couple of weeks. He's like, I'm fine.
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: That was his response. I was like, oh fuck, yeah, dude,
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: that got me fired up.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: Yeah no, he was fine. He just he needed one.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: He you know, he never likes coming out, but yeah, no,
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: he was good to go. He was ready to come
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: back in if they if they needed him too. But
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: that's one of the reasons it's great having two weeks
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: off also, right, remember there was a short period of
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: time there where you only had one week off before
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. I'll never forget it. It was Pittsburgh
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: in that particular game, and every one of the receivers
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: missed the game. Had he had two weeks, he would
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: have been able to play. So I think it's good
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: there's that week in between the game, the championship and
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: the Super Bowl.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: I can't imagine the anticipation of having two weeks though,
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: Like obviously the excitement we're going to Super Bowl. Then
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: probably by Tuesday or Wednesday the next week or that week,
- 1:11:20Speaker 3: you're like, I'm still a week and a half away
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: from playing in this game.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and not.
- 1:11:24Speaker 3: Like getting so excited to where like you kind of
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: blow your load on like the following Wednesday.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: I'll tell you what. Like by the time kind of
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Thursday practice ends, it seems like an eternity. By the
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: time you get to the game, you feel like you've
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: been waiting forever. Like these guys. If anything, you got
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: to guard against being too amped up because you're so
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: ready to go and you've been waiting forever and you
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: feel great because you haven't played in a couple of weeks.
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: And so that's one of the big challenges. Also, like
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: early on in the game, don't get too amped up.
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: And then also it's going to be the longest halftime
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: of your life, so you're gonna have to eat or
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: drink something and stay too ready to go and you know,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: regroup in the second half. We've seen some games, right
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: second half, a team comes out flat, they've been sitting
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: around for half an hour. So stuff like worm no
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: longer right and stuff like that does matter. But it's
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: a great experience. Man. I'm so happy for him. He's
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: been waiting for this moment for his whole life and
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: you know, he gets to take the field with his
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: team and see what they can do. And we're happy
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: for you. Thanks guys, thank you man. This is all time. Yeah,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: great episode. We got to get the
