Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: "This Was A Coverage Game (For the Eagles)"
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Inside the Tape.
- 0:10Speaker 2: On Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan
- 0:14Speaker 2: and we're breaking down Eagles tape. So that means we've
- 0:17Speaker 2: got Greg Cosel with us here to break down the
- 0:20Speaker 2: Eagles defensive tape against the Broncos in their twenty one
- 0:24Speaker 2: to seventeen loss. A very strange game, Greg iy with
- 0:28Speaker 2: My impression was the defense played fairly well, obviously up
- 0:31Speaker 2: until the fourth quarter, but they were on the field
- 0:34Speaker 2: quite a bit as the Eagles I believe lost time
- 0:35Speaker 2: of possession by a lot in this game they did.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I think the Broncos had the ball for over thirty
- 0:41Speaker 3: four minutes and ended up running seventy plays, which is
- 0:44Speaker 3: too many. Yeah, if you're a defense, it's too many.
- 0:47Speaker 4: Yep.
- 0:48Speaker 2: What did you notice from a tape study? Because every
- 0:51Speaker 2: week we talk about Vic Fangio's philosophy. Is he gonna blitz,
- 0:55Speaker 2: is he gonna go into zone? Is he gonna sim
- 0:57Speaker 2: is he gonna extra man pressure? What was his general
- 1:00Speaker 2: philosophy against the Broncos offense?
- 1:02Speaker 3: This was a coverage game. He didn't really He certainly
- 1:05Speaker 3: didn't rush five or more. There were no snaps of zero.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Only six of Nick's forty three drop backs did he
- 1:11Speaker 3: rush five. There were obviously some four man sim pressure
- 1:15Speaker 3: concepts steps, but this was a coverage game, not a
- 1:18Speaker 3: pressure game. Now he always when he feels he has to,
- 1:21Speaker 3: he always increases his his blitz frequency in the fourth quarter,
- 1:25Speaker 3: because four of the six to five man pressures came
- 1:29Speaker 3: in the fourth quarter. But for the most part, the
- 1:31Speaker 3: game plan was not to rush five. It was to
- 1:34Speaker 3: play coverage.
- 1:36Speaker 5: We greg, we know Ringo was a starter, not a
- 1:38Speaker 5: surprise at least to me. But do we see Dejeene
- 1:41Speaker 5: at all at corner where he just strictly Nickel.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Dejeene played some corner, but they didn't.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Play only in base right, only in.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Base Yeah, got it? Yeah, And look, I made the
- 1:53Speaker 3: point that five Eagles defenders played every snap. It was Bond, Dejeene,
- 1:57Speaker 3: Mitchell blanket ship in Macouba. So for the second game
- 2:00Speaker 3: in a row, Mkooba played every snap and Campbell played
- 2:02Speaker 3: every snap but three. The guy that that was interesting
- 2:05Speaker 3: was Ojalari, who I thought showed up.
- 2:07Speaker 4: In this game.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Absolutely, we'll take it fun.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Wow, thirty four snaps, that's a lot. So give us
- 2:14Speaker 4: an idea. You mentioned Ojelaie, what did he look like
- 2:16Speaker 4: to you?
- 2:17Speaker 3: I thought you saw. First of all, he's got ridiculously
- 2:19Speaker 3: long arms, and they really show up when you just
- 2:22Speaker 3: watch him move. That was one of the selling points
- 2:25Speaker 3: when he came out, because he's not tall relatively speaking,
- 2:28Speaker 3: but he has really long arms. I thought he had
- 2:31Speaker 3: some he showed some speech to power. I thought he
- 2:33Speaker 3: showed some quickness. I kind of liked the way he played,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you know, I thought he I thought he.
- 2:39Speaker 4: You knew he was out there.
- 2:41Speaker 3: He had a really good pass rush on third and
- 2:44Speaker 3: eight in the second quarter when he hit Nicks on
- 2:45Speaker 3: his delivery resulting in an incompletion, you know, with that
- 2:48Speaker 3: rip move. You guys, I'm sure remember that play. And
- 2:52Speaker 3: you know, I just thought he played well. I thought
- 2:54Speaker 3: he you know, you noticed that that he was out
- 2:56Speaker 3: there playing.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Fun fun fact for the Eagles, Ojelari's arm length it
- 3:01Speaker 2: was actually the same for the first four weeks of
- 3:03Speaker 2: the season too.
- 3:04Speaker 1: But for whatever reason, that couldn't get him active and
- 3:06Speaker 1: onto the field.
- 3:07Speaker 2: But uh that It's always a mystery to me when
- 3:10Speaker 2: a guy doesn't play and then in his first game
- 3:12Speaker 2: he plays like almost like thirty three percent of the
- 3:14Speaker 2: snaps here with Hunt and with with Zadarius Smith circle.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Jeff, he showed up so well, and I know that
- 3:21Speaker 5: this is the first time he plays. He played that's
- 3:24Speaker 5: a lot so that look, yes, we know their pass
- 3:27Speaker 5: rusher has not been good enough, but that's a good
- 3:30Speaker 5: sign for him. And you would now he's going to
- 3:33Speaker 5: against his former team this week. He's got to be
- 3:35Speaker 5: active every week. There's no reason after what he did
- 3:37Speaker 5: here that he won't be active.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Has to be act.
- 3:38Speaker 2: We'll see, we're going forward. I would agree with you,
- 3:40Speaker 2: Killie Ringo. Greg, how would you evaluate his first.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Start, second start? Right?
- 3:47Speaker 3: Didn't he started last week?
- 3:48Speaker 4: I'm sorry?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Second start?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yes, first as not a guy because the other
- 3:53Speaker 2: guy's injured.
- 3:53Speaker 1: First as this year as you're just a starter.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Now, yeah, I mean again, they didn't necessarily go after
- 3:58Speaker 3: him hard, you know. I thought that, you know, the
- 4:01Speaker 3: one play that kind of shows why he was a
- 4:04Speaker 3: fourth round pick and one of the reasons he's struggling
- 4:06Speaker 3: and probably not certainly not seen by the Eagles as
- 4:09Speaker 3: a full time starting corner was that frank On twenty
- 4:12Speaker 3: yard play on the first play of the third possession,
- 4:15Speaker 3: where you just saw the core stiffness. I mean, and
- 4:18Speaker 3: he was unable to stop. You know, he had to
- 4:21Speaker 3: chop his feet, he had to gather his body. That
- 4:23Speaker 3: was one of the main issues coming out of college.
- 4:26Speaker 3: That's been an issue, you know, throughout his his Eagles tenure.
- 4:31Speaker 3: That's one reason he's not a starting corner. He just
- 4:33Speaker 3: he's stiff in his core, and you can you can
- 4:36Speaker 3: work with that to some degree, but you can't make
- 4:40Speaker 3: him all of a sudden a smooth, loose athlete.
- 4:42Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:43Speaker 3: It's like a guy who runs a four right's not
- 4:44Speaker 3: going to be a four to four guy, right, Yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 3: you know, I mean, you can probably get him a
- 4:49Speaker 3: little better, but at the end of the day, that's
- 4:51Speaker 3: his body type and that's who he is.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Interesting second half, Greg fourth Quarner, the bow Knicks to
- 5:01Speaker 2: Courtland Sutton connection really came on after not really having
- 5:05Speaker 2: much in the first half.
- 5:07Speaker 1: What changed there? What did you see?
- 5:09Speaker 3: Well, it's funny. There were a couple of times he
- 5:11Speaker 3: beat him just one on one versus Mitchell, and Mitchell
- 5:15Speaker 3: had good coverage and he just you know, it was
- 5:18Speaker 3: it was good versus good, and Nicks made good throws
- 5:22Speaker 3: and Sutton, who's big and physical, went up and got
- 5:24Speaker 3: it and Mitchell was right there. You know. Obviously the
- 5:27Speaker 3: big big play was that was the third and fifteen,
- 5:30Speaker 3: which was not man coverage. They were playing cover six,
- 5:34Speaker 3: which means they were playing quarters to the short side
- 5:37Speaker 3: of the field, and that was, you know, a great
- 5:41Speaker 3: anticipation throw by Nick's hitting Sutton on the coral route
- 5:44Speaker 3: and Mitchell was not in good position on that play
- 5:47Speaker 3: and then Blanket Ship missed the tackle and it became
- 5:49Speaker 3: thirty four yards. But those other plays you're talking about,
- 5:52Speaker 3: the man plays, you know, Ston's a good receiver and
- 5:57Speaker 3: Mitchell's a really good corner and they won those. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 3: first that happens. You can't really that's not a case.
- 6:04Speaker 3: You know again, what are we gonna say now? Not me,
- 6:07Speaker 3: but I'm just talking generally. Oh well, Mitchell's no good.
- 6:09Speaker 3: I mean, you know, it happens really good. It's the NFL,
- 6:12Speaker 3: you know, I mean it just they were good throwers,
- 6:15Speaker 3: good catches, and Mitchell was right there. It wasn't like
- 6:18Speaker 3: he was. He actually got beat worse on the second
- 6:20Speaker 3: play of the game where the ball went right through
- 6:21Speaker 3: Sutton's hands.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Yes, first, speaking of that, I I they threw it
- 6:26Speaker 4: a lot.
- 6:26Speaker 5: They threw it twenty one times with knicks and he
- 6:29Speaker 5: had well less than one hundred yards.
- 6:30Speaker 4: It seemed to me, Greg, you tell us what you thought.
- 6:32Speaker 5: I thought it looked like the Eagles defense was mostly
- 6:35Speaker 5: under control here and in control the first half.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yeah, the Eagles defense, I mean played well. I mean
- 6:40Speaker 3: they didn't. You know, they didn't give up much in
- 6:42Speaker 3: the run game. In the second half. They were a
- 6:43Speaker 3: couple of runs to the two, the seventeen yarder and
- 6:46Speaker 3: the thirteen yarder by Dobbins where the exact same play
- 6:49Speaker 3: in which the Eagles were just moved off the ball.
- 6:52Speaker 3: They was really well blocked and they got moved one
- 6:54Speaker 3: of them. Carter simply got just driven out, which doesn't
- 6:57Speaker 3: happen very often. And by the way, they didn't slide
- 7:01Speaker 3: to Carter just as a normal course of events in
- 7:04Speaker 3: this game. I'm sure you guys noticed that. You know,
- 7:07Speaker 3: they did not do that. There were plenty of times
- 7:10Speaker 3: they led miners of block Carter one on one, and
- 7:13Speaker 3: he didn't do a bad job. I mean, Carter beat
- 7:15Speaker 3: him a couple of times, not badly, I mean got
- 7:18Speaker 3: near the quarterback, but he didn't kill him by any means.
- 7:22Speaker 3: So again that's a Sean Payton thing or an O
- 7:26Speaker 3: line coach thing. But that's what they chose to do
- 7:28Speaker 3: and it didn't really hurt him.
- 7:30Speaker 2: So does that mean they had more protection on guys
- 7:32Speaker 2: like Joemo and Davis because they weren't sliding to cart Yeah.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, which is interesting, isn't it.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's really fascinating.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean again, I'm sure if they were here,
- 7:42Speaker 3: you know, the coaches, well, they wouldn't tell us anyway,
- 7:45Speaker 3: but if you gave them truths here him, they'd probably
- 7:47Speaker 3: have a really good answer and we'd go, Okay, that
- 7:49Speaker 3: sounds great. But I mean, that's what the tape showed.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah, funny I thought.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I mean, I hate the phrase out coach because everybody
- 7:58Speaker 2: just says, well, the winning.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Team got that right.
- 8:01Speaker 2: I know it throwing around, but I do think the
- 8:03Speaker 2: Broncos coaching staff, both offensively and defensively, had a good
- 8:07Speaker 2: plan and executed at times.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Yeah. But the other thing I love Jeff is when
- 8:11Speaker 3: I read and I there's one particular reporter in Philly
- 8:14Speaker 3: who shall remain nameless because it's that's not the point
- 8:17Speaker 3: of saying this, but every time the Eagles lose, he
- 8:20Speaker 3: says that the you know, the Eagles didn't make the
- 8:22Speaker 3: right adjustments. And I'm thinking to myself, you wouldn't know
- 8:25Speaker 3: the right adjustment or the wrong adjustment if it hits you.
- 8:27Speaker 4: In the face. You know, we don't.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I sit here and watch tape and unless the adjustment
- 8:31Speaker 3: is blatant like where it's you know, oh my god,
- 8:34Speaker 3: looks something's really different, because I mean, I've heard Peyton
- 8:37Speaker 3: Manning say he didn't make one adjustment at halftime in
- 8:39Speaker 3: his career. You know, I've heard Phil Simms tell me,
- 8:42Speaker 3: and I know Phil very well tell me that. You know,
- 8:45Speaker 3: we didn't make adjustments at halftime. All we really decided
- 8:48Speaker 3: was that, hey, we like these plays, let's keep running them.
- 8:51Speaker 3: I mean, you know, yeah, I mean, you know.
- 8:55Speaker 1: You're right, You're right.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Like last week, it was obvious for us, right with
- 8:58Speaker 2: Todd Bowles, he blitzed a lot in the first half.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Its blizz in this side of way. What we don't
- 9:04Speaker 3: know is if that was part of a game plan
- 9:07Speaker 3: to begin with, then it played out exactly the way
- 9:09Speaker 3: they thought it would play out. That's what we don't know.
- 9:13Speaker 1: You're one hundred percent right about that.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Good stuff.
- 9:16Speaker 2: All right, Let's take a look at some of the
- 9:18Speaker 2: interesting plays from the Eagles defense. Hey, you know that
- 9:21Speaker 2: one guy in the group chat who hit a five
- 9:24Speaker 2: leg parlay week one and he wouldn't shut up about
- 9:26Speaker 2: it for the rest of the season.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, yeah, it.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Could be him, It could be you, and we would
- 9:34Speaker 2: all want to be you. My bookie makes it stupid

- 11:32Speaker 3: So it's funny you're starting with this play, Jeff, because
- 11:35Speaker 3: this is just what I was talking about with the ringo,
- 11:37Speaker 3: and I think you can really see it clearly. This
- 11:40Speaker 3: was a twenty yard completion to Franklin who's down at
- 11:43Speaker 3: the bottom of the screen in a plus split and
- 11:45Speaker 3: look at Franklin just attack him vertically, and Ringo has
- 11:48Speaker 3: to turn and start to run because he doesn't want
- 11:50Speaker 3: to get beat vertically. Now again, some might say different
- 11:53Speaker 3: coaches have different approaches, So I don't know how they
- 11:56Speaker 3: teach it at the Eagles. But some might say he
- 11:58Speaker 3: turned to run too soon. Some might say not, you know,
- 12:02Speaker 3: that's that's a coaching thing. So no one's right or
- 12:04Speaker 3: wrong on that. But if you can go back a
- 12:06Speaker 3: little bit so people can see it in true motion,
- 12:09Speaker 3: because you want to see. Look how long it takes
- 12:12Speaker 3: him to stop. Look how he has to chop his
- 12:14Speaker 3: feet and literally gather his body to stop keep going.
- 12:20Speaker 3: You see, he has to chop and literally gather. And
- 12:24Speaker 3: that's just core stiffness. Like I said, you can work
- 12:26Speaker 3: on that to some degree, but you can't make him,
- 12:29Speaker 3: you know, a smooth, elusive athlete. He's just that's not
- 12:32Speaker 3: how he's building.
- 12:33Speaker 5: What we were told Greg, we asked after the draft
- 12:36Speaker 5: because that was the one big nugget we got is
- 12:38Speaker 5: he had major stiffness in his lower body, a trouble transition,
- 12:41Speaker 5: and can you get rid of it? I think Jeff,
- 12:43Speaker 5: Between Jeff and I, we talked to over two dozen
- 12:45Speaker 5: people over three years. Not one said you can get
- 12:47Speaker 5: rid of it. They say, kind of what you said,
- 12:49Speaker 5: You could work on it, maybe get a small percentage better,
- 12:52Speaker 5: but you can't get rid of it. And the pro
- 12:55Speaker 5: personnel people know this around league, so it's going to
- 12:57Speaker 5: be in the report.
- 12:58Speaker 3: Well that's why he was you know, look, I do
- 13:02Speaker 3: a ton of draft work, okay, and you guys know that.
- 13:04Speaker 3: And am I going to get guys wrong like everybody does.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Of course, that's just human nature. But you know, because
- 13:10Speaker 3: he was the number one recruited corner coming out of
- 13:12Speaker 3: high school in Arizona, and because he played at Arizona
- 13:15Speaker 3: at Georgia and I believe had the big interception when
- 13:17Speaker 3: they beat Alabama in the championship game, you know, people
- 13:22Speaker 3: just automatically assume he's a first round pick. And when
- 13:25Speaker 3: I watched his tape, I said to myself that he's
- 13:28Speaker 3: not going to be a first round pick, you know,
- 13:30Speaker 3: And I said, I'd be surprised. I said, if he
- 13:33Speaker 3: is drafted, it would be day too late. He'd be
- 13:35Speaker 3: that kind of guy. And then of course he gets
- 13:37Speaker 3: drafted in the fourth round. And I just got ripped
- 13:40Speaker 3: by everybody because it's Georgia, you know, you know. But
- 13:43Speaker 3: I mean again, it's no knock on Ringo. He is
- 13:46Speaker 3: what he is, and he's still in the league, and
- 13:47Speaker 3: who knows, he may play ten years in the league,
- 13:49Speaker 3: and that would be awesome. And it's those kinds of guys,
- 13:52Speaker 3: not that they care what I think, but it's those
- 13:54Speaker 3: kinds of guys that actually have great respect for because
- 13:57Speaker 3: they just keep working and working and working and they
- 13:59Speaker 3: end up for a long period of time. My guess
- 14:02Speaker 3: is he could be one of those guys, but he
- 14:04Speaker 3: just doesn't have the traits to be a starting corner.
- 14:07Speaker 1: All right.
- 14:10Speaker 3: So this is the blitz.
- 14:11Speaker 1: This is the Cooper de Jan blitz. I just wanted
- 14:13Speaker 1: to show it really quickly.
- 14:14Speaker 3: But now go back.
- 14:16Speaker 1: We're gonna go back a little bit to the start
- 14:18Speaker 1: of the play.
- 14:18Speaker 3: So here's my point. There happens to be motion on
- 14:22Speaker 3: this play as well. So if he does not motion,
- 14:26Speaker 3: because look at Dejene, as soon as he motions, he
- 14:28Speaker 3: clearly communicates. Okay, so we don't know what he's communicating. Now,
- 14:33Speaker 3: maybe he would have blitzed anyway, because it appears that
- 14:37Speaker 3: Mukouba is coming down and he may have been coming
- 14:40Speaker 3: down anyway, and we know that they match him up
- 14:42Speaker 3: to wide receivers, so that may have happened anyway. But
- 14:45Speaker 3: he blitzes and he gets picked up by the back
- 14:48Speaker 3: and he beats the back and he causes what.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I thought this was a fumble.
- 14:53Speaker 2: But what I know right right, the replay showed like
- 14:57Speaker 2: if you really slow it down, it didn't look like
- 14:58Speaker 2: his hand moving.
- 15:00Speaker 4: That's its incomplete.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'll tell you what, I really loved this
- 15:04Speaker 2: play going through this play because literally last week we
- 15:07Speaker 2: were talking about, yeah, he did this in his debut
- 15:10Speaker 2: last year against the Browns. VIC called it up and
- 15:13Speaker 2: hadn't since, and then all of a sudden, you get
- 15:15Speaker 2: it again.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Yead, No, this is and he and he just ate
- 15:19Speaker 3: up ate up the back there. That's Harvey, I believe.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yep.
- 15:25Speaker 2: All right, this is another. This is a third and
- 15:27Speaker 2: eight sack right here.
- 15:30Speaker 3: This is Ojeli.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Wow, his back I meant, I meant a pressure. Yeah,
- 15:36Speaker 1: his pres.
- 15:36Speaker 4: Look at him dip that's impression.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I don't know if you have this from the end zone,
- 15:40Speaker 3: but you can really see the inside rit move.
- 15:43Speaker 1: That's the left tackle Garrett holes is pretty good.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yep.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I will say there was some pressure around the right
- 15:50Speaker 2: side as well.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Also, I do believe I have this.
- 15:53Speaker 3: There we go, you'll really see it. First of all,
- 15:56Speaker 3: he's able to kind of clear his outside shoulder just enough.
- 16:00Speaker 3: He can use that that inside arm to rip look
- 16:02Speaker 3: look right, keep going. So he cleared him and boo,
- 16:08Speaker 3: there was arm under and there was some force with
- 16:11Speaker 3: that too. You could see he really wound up without
- 16:14Speaker 3: losing any speed.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Hey, Jeff, on your point earlier, he's had time to
- 16:18Speaker 5: save up his energy. He hasn't played very honestly like
- 16:22Speaker 5: he came out, and he brought it good for him
- 16:24Speaker 5: many Adam.
- 16:25Speaker 3: If I recall, I don't you know again he came
- 16:27Speaker 3: out a number of years ago, you know, three four
- 16:28Speaker 3: years ago?
- 16:29Speaker 4: Was it?
- 16:30Speaker 3: But I thought his arm length, if I remember correctly,
- 16:32Speaker 3: he was in the thirty five inch range was now.
- 16:35Speaker 4: I have to look.
- 16:35Speaker 5: I think I know it was over thirty four, which
- 16:37Speaker 5: is yet ackle arm lengthe and remember he's about six
- 16:39Speaker 5: too on a quarter.
- 16:40Speaker 3: I know he's not tall.
- 16:41Speaker 4: That's the that's the crazy thing he is.
- 16:45Speaker 5: It's funny, Jeff and I were training camp a number
- 16:46Speaker 5: of times, and Andrew Cheko is you know, you know Andrew,
- 16:51Speaker 5: Greg and we all said it. We didn't see it
- 16:53Speaker 5: from our lari like now because he kind of figured out, okay,
- 16:56Speaker 5: this is why he's not playing.
- 16:58Speaker 4: But he's put himself on tape. This looks good.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I I should have been a left
- 17:03Speaker 3: tackle because you know my dress shirts are arm only
- 17:06Speaker 3: thirty four to thirty five, so I should have been a.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Lot our mine.
- 17:09Speaker 3: But I don't think.
- 17:09Speaker 4: Yeah, you're six? Are you still six three? I know
- 17:14Speaker 4: men shrink.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Well, I used to be six four, but now I'm
- 17:17Speaker 3: about sixth grade?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Right, So do you know what you're serious in all? Seriously?
- 17:21Speaker 4: Do you want your life was? Was? No?
- 17:23Speaker 3: I don't because I never you know, I was?
- 17:24Speaker 4: You were thirty two? Not too bad.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I knew what my forty time was in college?
- 17:29Speaker 4: Though, did you break five?
- 17:31Speaker 3: I was four to eight? Really, we got measured my
- 17:34Speaker 3: freshman year in baseball four eight.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Wow, I'm sure.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Hey, if your arm length is the same as o Jelaris,
- 17:40Speaker 2: if you shrink two more inches in the next ten years,
- 17:42Speaker 2: which you know probably is gonna happen to you, then
- 17:43Speaker 2: you'll just look like just like Ojeli exactly.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I looked exactly the same.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think you're gonna make his coin. But
- 17:50Speaker 4: that's a different story.
- 17:51Speaker 2: No, no, all right, now we got I think this
- 17:53Speaker 2: is this is another third eight Greg and we see
- 17:55Speaker 2: Zadarius Smith, and I guess with Vic not sending as
- 17:59Speaker 2: much extra man pressure, he was using more athleticism games
- 18:03Speaker 2: things like that up front.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Oh no, they they did a good amount of stuning
- 18:07Speaker 3: in this game. I was and maybe that's because he
- 18:09Speaker 3: didn't add another body to the pressure and they did
- 18:12Speaker 3: a really nice job with it. This is a really
- 18:14Speaker 3: good job. This is the sack by Smith. They did
- 18:17Speaker 3: a t stunn as I recall on both sides here,
- 18:20Speaker 3: and because see you know what the key to this
- 18:25Speaker 3: is the temple Campbell. Hod Campbell steps up to grab
- 18:31Speaker 3: the eyes of the center, so the center can't be
- 18:33Speaker 3: involved on the other side. And now he just stays
- 18:36Speaker 3: to that side, so there's no one to really play
- 18:39Speaker 3: Smith when he loops around because the guard, the right
- 18:42Speaker 3: guard goes inside with that's probably Jayalen Carter.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Right there, So that takes the center right and.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Then the center just stays to that side. And because
- 18:54Speaker 3: the guard Miners is not going to take his eyes
- 18:56Speaker 3: off Carter, he just is not in position to deal
- 18:59Speaker 3: with Smith.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought that was fantastic and this is.
- 19:02Speaker 4: A slowly here.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Campbell does a really good job. It's all he needs
- 19:07Speaker 3: to do. He just needs to grab the eyes of
- 19:09Speaker 3: the center.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Because Vic does this a lot.
- 19:11Speaker 2: He walks that linebacker up late and acts as if
- 19:13Speaker 2: that guy's a late comer, but he's not. He dropped
- 19:16Speaker 2: and that that just helped take the side exactly what.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Watch what is it Wattenberg? Who's the center or is
- 19:22Speaker 4: it that Palkowitz guy?
- 19:24Speaker 5: I forget the guy's name anyway, Watch sixty look to
- 19:28Speaker 5: the left and he's beat.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I mean that's what happens. Yeah, it's great, ye I.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Think it is. Then there's no one knowing he gives
- 19:35Speaker 3: him the middle. You get the clean loop through the
- 19:38Speaker 3: a gap.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Yeah, the desired reaction that was actually more of a
- 19:42Speaker 2: schemed up. I mean, zidarious Smith's athleticism showing through there.
- 19:45Speaker 2: But all you have to do is run through an
- 19:46Speaker 2: alley and sack the quarterback.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Yeah, but you still have to show some some short
- 19:51Speaker 3: area burst in a little bit of bend and then
- 19:53Speaker 3: closing speed. I mean it's not not every guy can
- 19:56Speaker 3: do that.
- 19:56Speaker 5: But Jeff right when Wattenberg the center looks then they've
- 19:59Speaker 5: got them like, that's that's a great point you guys
- 20:02Speaker 5: made about Campbell.
- 20:03Speaker 4: That was really good stuff.
- 20:04Speaker 5: By the way, real quick, before we go on, how
- 20:06Speaker 5: you think Campble's been doing so far?
- 20:07Speaker 4: Could we keep it being asked about them?
- 20:09Speaker 3: You know, this was the first game where I thought
- 20:11Speaker 3: that Bond and Campbell did not stand out. You know, again,
- 20:15Speaker 3: that doesn't mean they're not good players. Okay, but it's
- 20:18Speaker 3: just and by the way, no one's great for seventeen games.
- 20:22Speaker 3: It's just too hard. I mean, you know, look what
- 20:25Speaker 3: happened last night in Buffalo. I mean you know, it's
- 20:27Speaker 3: just these things happened. You know, there's seventeen games. No
- 20:30Speaker 3: one's great for seventeen games.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just you know, this is the NFL.
- 20:35Speaker 3: You know, people need to understand that it's just the
- 20:37Speaker 3: hope when no one's great or your good players aren't
- 20:40Speaker 3: necessarily great, that you can still win the games. You know,
- 20:42Speaker 3: that's what you hope for. But no one's great for
- 20:44Speaker 3: seventeen games.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Wouldn't you Because I know what you told us, and
- 20:47Speaker 5: when you watch a preseason tape for us, you were
- 20:49Speaker 5: pleasantly surprised, would you say is certainly I would say
- 20:54Speaker 5: he's had a schedule based on what I Yeah, Campbell.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Campbell, well I still noticed this. I'm in an athletic movement,
- 21:01Speaker 3: you know, I think. I said to one of my
- 21:03Speaker 3: guys after I'd watched like four plays, I said, man, Campbell,
- 21:05Speaker 3: I just loved the way he moves.
- 21:07Speaker 4: I mean, he's yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 3: But you know, sometimes you just don't make dominant plays
- 21:11Speaker 3: or great plays, you know, every game, it just doesn't happen.
- 21:16Speaker 4: All right.
- 21:16Speaker 2: So this is what we references before Greg, the third
- 21:19Speaker 2: fifteen throw where Mitchell really isn't in a great position
- 21:24Speaker 2: as you highlight it to.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Yeah, but the coverage here, it's what we called cover six,
- 21:27Speaker 3: which means it's cover four to the short side of
- 21:29Speaker 3: the field and cover two to the wide side of
- 21:31Speaker 3: the field. So they're going to work to the short
- 21:33Speaker 3: side of the field here, and it's an empty set,
- 21:40Speaker 3: and you're going to see that Mitchell's retreating. And look
- 21:45Speaker 3: at by the way, look at when Nick throws this ball,
- 21:48Speaker 3: Sudden hasn't even really turned yet, you know, and he
- 21:52Speaker 3: puts so he throws it with great time and great anticipation,
- 21:55Speaker 3: precise ball location.
- 21:57Speaker 2: See, he rows it before Mitchell even slips, So he
- 22:00Speaker 2: couldn't have anticipated a slip there.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Mitchell becomes out of a position because of that,
- 22:06Speaker 3: and he can't really react. And then Blanket I mean,
- 22:09Speaker 3: worst case Blanket Ship's got to make that tackle right there.
- 22:11Speaker 3: It's still a first down, but it's not thirty four yards. Yeah.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I don't think Blankenship has tackled really well this year
- 22:17Speaker 2: for whatever reason. It just and again we talked about
- 22:20Speaker 2: not having CJ next to year. I don't know what
- 22:21Speaker 2: that means for him and how he plays, but I think.
- 22:25Speaker 4: This was a throw.
- 22:26Speaker 3: This was see, this was in this situation. This is
- 22:30Speaker 3: you've got to turn it loose. I mean you can't
- 22:31Speaker 3: sit back there and wait and you can't throw the
- 22:34Speaker 3: check down. I mean, this is when you gotta turn.
- 22:36Speaker 3: You gotta turn it loose. You gotta trust it, you
- 22:39Speaker 3: gotta you know, you gotta trust everything. You gotta trust
- 22:42Speaker 3: what you're seeing. You gotta trust your receiver. You this
- 22:45Speaker 3: has to be in anticipation throw. First of all, he
- 22:47Speaker 3: doesn't know Mitchell's gonna slip. So if you'll wait, then Mitchell, Mitchell,
- 22:51Speaker 3: you know, drives on the route. It's incomplete.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Yep uh, And I believe that's set up this very
- 22:56Speaker 2: next play to Evan Ingram here.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I can.
- 22:59Speaker 3: I look to this play a lot, and I've seen
- 23:01Speaker 3: this kind of thing a lot, and I've always tried
- 23:03Speaker 3: to figure out where the tight end in this route,
- 23:07Speaker 3: in this concept fits. And my sense is it's the
- 23:10Speaker 3: third read. That's my sense. I could be wrong because
- 23:13Speaker 3: I think with the boot action, if if the back
- 23:18Speaker 3: and I think it's baby.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Here or.
- 23:22Speaker 1: You might be right about that, yeah, Batty.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if he's wide open, baby, yeah, he's
- 23:27Speaker 3: the three number. I think if he's wide open, he's
- 23:29Speaker 3: throwing it to him and then I think he's looking
- 23:32Speaker 3: for Franklin crossing, you know, but because of Franklin has
- 23:35Speaker 3: to you know, do a little jig there to get
- 23:37Speaker 3: by the rusher, and then I think he comes. This
- 23:40Speaker 3: is my sense of it. Like I said, I could
- 23:42Speaker 3: be wrong, but I think it's the third read.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Yeah. M Carter almost had him too twice.
- 23:49Speaker 4: That's a I mean, that's a heck of a throw.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's a well designed play to have their
- 23:54Speaker 2: third read be there for that.
- 23:55Speaker 3: But yeah, I've seen the Rams do that for years
- 23:58Speaker 3: and years and years where it's actually the four thread.
- 24:02Speaker 3: But yeah, because you could tell Nicks is not looking inside,
- 24:07Speaker 3: he's looking outside the.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Right yep, and then he comes back in.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Now you know he's going to be there, but he's
- 24:14Speaker 3: not looking to him first, right.
- 24:17Speaker 2: And then this last one would be I think this
- 24:20Speaker 2: is the Sutton on the final drive that gets them into.
- 24:22Speaker 1: The Eagles territory where he gets sixteen yards.
- 24:26Speaker 3: Yeah, this was just just this was just a fade.
- 24:28Speaker 3: This was just Nix and Sutton beating really good coverage
- 24:32Speaker 3: by Mitchell. I mean, you know you sometimes you just
- 24:35Speaker 3: got to tip your hat and say that's a good play.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yeah, Hey, fall is planting season. Did you know that

- 27:03Speaker 1: Twenty one and up.
- 27:05Speaker 2: Did Mitchell Do you think Mitchell was a little bit
- 27:07Speaker 2: out of position on that because it seemed like, I.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Think off the snap, he just got a little too
- 27:12Speaker 3: caught up inside. Yeah, and then he then he was
- 27:16Speaker 3: a little covering mode, but he kind of recovered. I
- 27:18Speaker 3: mean he got there, yeah, I did get his arm in,
- 27:22Speaker 3: I mean, you know, close.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that's true. That was what I wound up
- 27:27Speaker 1: be in a big play. I actually thought they were
- 27:29Speaker 1: gonna want U scoring a touchdown.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Not The first play of that drive was interesting. I
- 27:32Speaker 3: didn't write it in my notes. I thought bononn actually
- 27:35Speaker 3: got caught inside on that first play. It was an
- 27:37Speaker 3: eleven yarder, which kind of I mean, that's the play
- 27:40Speaker 3: where you as a defense you want to stop him
- 27:41Speaker 3: and make it you know, second along right away and
- 27:44Speaker 3: then you convert on you get eleven yards on that play,
- 27:47Speaker 3: and offensively, you're feeling pretty good now that Hey, now
- 27:50Speaker 3: we have a drive going.
- 27:53Speaker 2: All right, Well, that is a look at the Eagles defense.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I thought more positive and negative. But they were on
- 27:57Speaker 2: the field quite a bit there. And then obviously, as
- 27:59Speaker 2: we just Nicks made some really nice throws there in
- 28:02Speaker 2: the fourth quarter that were very meaningful throws. Short turnaround
- 28:05Speaker 2: for the Eagles as Thursday night, they have gotten the
- 28:07Speaker 2: New York Giants up in the meadowlands.
- 28:10Speaker 1: That's gonna do it.
- 28:11Speaker 2: For Inside the Tape with Greg Gosell. For Greg Cosell
- 28:13Speaker 2: and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher again. You've been watching
