- 0:50Speaker 4: The producer Jay Carman, as I always say on Friday's, Hopefully,
- 0:55Speaker 4: if it's the traditional Monday through Friday into the work
- 0:58Speaker 4: week for you, good on you, good for you. Hope
- 1:00Speaker 4: hopefully it goes well for you this weekend. For those
- 1:02Speaker 4: of you for whom the day of Friday means the
- 1:05Speaker 4: middle of your work week, hopefully we get you over
- 1:08Speaker 4: the hump. And for those of who are starting off
- 1:10Speaker 4: on a Friday, will hang in there.
- 1:12Speaker 5: We'll try to help you out.
- 1:14Speaker 4: As I mentioned, a little bit different open to the program.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Instead of hearing eminence from from the Who, what you're
- 1:21Speaker 4: hearing there is the sounds of the guests who great
- 1:24Speaker 4: band from the late sixties to early seventies there and
- 1:28Speaker 4: I just kind of a moved the day because lind
- 1:31Speaker 4: and I are going up to the Dallas for Ward
- 1:32Speaker 4: Metroplex this weekend. We're gonna see some old friends and
- 1:37Speaker 4: have some dinner. We're also going to go to a
- 1:39Speaker 4: concert on Sunday night.
- 1:41Speaker 5: In Fort Worth.
- 1:42Speaker 4: A Dickey's are in a great concert venue. By the way,
- 1:44Speaker 4: that building is kind of like a cut down version
- 1:48Speaker 4: of smaller sized version of the American Airlines Center Dallas,
- 1:51Speaker 4: built by the same architecture firm on and I think
- 1:55Speaker 4: we've seen James Taylor Jackson brown in there. Had a
- 2:00Speaker 4: lot of fun calling the women's Sweet sixteen and Elite
- 2:03Speaker 4: eight games in that building last March, as well as
- 2:06Speaker 4: a December non conferencemaner for Baylor for Texas women in
- 2:09Speaker 4: Routes are going to the final four. Longhorn Men play
- 2:12Speaker 4: Texas A and M in that building several years ago,
- 2:14Speaker 4: right after an opening got a win in that. It's
- 2:16Speaker 4: a really nice building and it's a really good concert venue.
- 2:20Speaker 4: And the guests who are back together, Burton Cummings, Randy Bachman,
- 2:26Speaker 4: they're there with the band, and so Lind and I
- 2:29Speaker 4: are trying to see as many of these elder statesmen
- 2:33Speaker 4: artists and bands before they hang it up and that's
- 2:36Speaker 4: why we over the past few years have seen Bob
- 2:40Speaker 4: Seeger and Eric Clapton and Little River Band and ninety
- 2:44Speaker 4: two year old Herb Alperd.
- 2:45Speaker 5: That's not classic rock.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's a totally different genre of music, but a lot
- 2:49Speaker 4: of fun with that. We're going to see Chicago and
- 2:51Speaker 4: Sticks next month or the later this month and Doobie
- 2:54Speaker 4: Brothers in Santana, so we try to do that. And
- 2:57Speaker 4: the guess Who are playing with Don Older formerly of
- 3:01Speaker 4: the Eagles opening for them. But of course, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 4: Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman put the guests Who together
- 3:09Speaker 4: and then when the band split up, Randy Bachman went
- 3:13Speaker 4: on to.
- 3:14Speaker 5: You know, help found.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Bachman Turner Overdrive, and of course they were extremely popular.
- 3:19Speaker 4: And so we're gonna have in our return cuts today
- 3:23Speaker 4: on this Friday. Why not on a Friday, we'll hear
- 3:26Speaker 4: from the guests who, and we will hear from b
- 3:29Speaker 4: t Oh Bachman, Turner Overdrive.
- 3:31Speaker 2: We hear from Jay Carman, the producer. How's your day
- 3:34Speaker 2: going so far?
- 3:35Speaker 6: Yeah, of off to a solid start. Craig guy going
- 3:39Speaker 6: to get out to Houston a little bit later this weekend,
- 3:42Speaker 6: which will be what will be Funnel though it seems
- 3:44Speaker 6: like I haven't spent a weekend in Austin in a while,
- 3:46Speaker 6: between going home to d C and now going out
- 3:49Speaker 6: there this weekend and spend some time with Allison.
- 3:51Speaker 2: So exciting start to the day.
- 3:53Speaker 6: And yeah, hopefully we can make everybody's Friday afternoon a
- 3:56Speaker 6: little better.
- 3:57Speaker 4: And Allison did not go with you to Washington, d C. Righty,
- 4:00Speaker 4: not this time? Yeah, so you better be in Houston
- 4:02Speaker 4: this week and that's yeah, to take care, take care
- 4:07Speaker 4: of take care of business, you know, take care of
- 4:09Speaker 4: your obligations.
- 4:09Speaker 6: Yeah, Restaurant week out there, So we're looking forward to
- 4:12Speaker 6: trying a couple of new places.
- 4:13Speaker 5: What do they do with restaurant week in Houston?
- 4:16Speaker 6: They'll offer you a lunch, a fixed menu brunch, lunch, dinner.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Depending on where you go.
- 4:22Speaker 6: There's different price ranges and you can essentially get a
- 4:26Speaker 6: really good deal on a three or four course meal.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Wow, are you listing Austin restaurant tours? It would be
- 4:33Speaker 4: nice to have something something like that. Yeah, so I
- 4:36Speaker 4: look forward to that. Okay, things to get to on
- 4:39Speaker 4: the program today, We're gonna give away three more copies
- 4:43Speaker 4: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. We've been doing it
- 4:46Speaker 4: every day this week, we're gonna do it every day
- 4:48Speaker 4: next week, we're gonna do it every day, follow the
- 4:51Speaker 4: following week, the third week in August, three consecutive weeks,
- 4:55Speaker 4: giving away three copies per day, one per hour on
- 4:58Speaker 4: the program, and we mix it up. We mix it
- 5:02Speaker 4: in terms of two different ways to win, but to
- 5:05Speaker 4: utilize one specific entity to qualify yourself to win. And
- 5:12Speaker 4: the two different ways to win is we mix either
- 5:15Speaker 4: a random entry or a trivia response, and so we
- 5:23Speaker 4: do it alternating. On one day, we'll do two random
- 5:28Speaker 4: entries and one trivia response, and then the next day
- 5:31Speaker 4: we'll do two trivia responses and one random entry. Today
- 5:36Speaker 4: it's two of the random sort, meaning this this is
- 5:39Speaker 4: how it works. For those of you who already know
- 5:42Speaker 4: the drill, indulge me a little bit, as I let
- 5:45Speaker 4: everybody else know. If you haven't already done it. On
- 5:50Speaker 4: your smartphone, be it an iPhone or an Android, you
- 5:53Speaker 4: download the iHeartRadio app. Just go to your app store
- 5:57Speaker 4: and your download. It's really easy to do and it's free.
- 5:58Speaker 4: It doesn't cost anything. You just download the iHeart Radio app.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Once you have the app downloaded, you do a search,
- 6:05Speaker 4: go into your search bar, search window, a little search
- 6:08Speaker 4: magnifying glass, whatever it is, your search window, and you
- 6:11Speaker 4: search AM thirteen hundred zone. The minute you search AM
- 6:16Speaker 4: thirteen under the zone on the iHeart Radio app, it
- 6:19Speaker 4: pops right up. And when it does, you'll see two buttons.
- 6:22Speaker 4: One's a little white triangular button that's to listen to
- 6:26Speaker 4: this program and other programs there on the iHeartRadio app.
- 6:29Speaker 4: It's the other one for the contesting. It's a little
- 6:32Speaker 4: red button with a white microphone. That microphone is the key,
- 6:35Speaker 4: that's our talkback microphone. It gets you into the talkback feature.
- 6:41Speaker 4: So what you do is you can leave us a
- 6:43Speaker 4: message by pushing that red button. You leave us a
- 6:46Speaker 4: message of up to thirty seconds. Now, for the purposes
- 6:49Speaker 4: of this contest, you don't have to do that. You
- 6:52Speaker 4: don't have to you know, you don't have to leave
- 6:54Speaker 4: us thirty seconds. All you have to do is give
- 6:57Speaker 4: us the answer that we're looking for. When we do
- 6:58Speaker 4: it randomly, as we'll do this hour, all you have
- 7:02Speaker 4: to do is say I want the magazine, and if
- 7:04Speaker 4: you happen to be the person doing it getting it,
- 7:09Speaker 4: you'll get it.
- 7:10Speaker 5: And in this case, we're gonna do this right now.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Number two, Number two, whoever is the second person to
- 7:18Speaker 4: get in using the iHeartRadio app, and you download it,
- 7:24Speaker 4: then you search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 7:26Speaker 5: It pops up.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Then you hit that little red button with a white
- 7:28Speaker 4: microphone that cues the talkback microphone, and then all you
- 7:32Speaker 4: have to do is say I want the magazine. Second
- 7:36Speaker 4: person in the queue today, we'll get a copy of
- 7:40Speaker 4: the magazine.
- 7:40Speaker 5: This hour.
- 7:41Speaker 4: We're gonna do another random one like that in the
- 7:43Speaker 4: four o'clock hour. We'll have a not too difficult trivia
- 7:47Speaker 4: question for you to address coming up in the three
- 7:50Speaker 4: o'clock hour. So we've got that, as we have throughout
- 7:54Speaker 4: the course of this week. In the next two weeks,
- 7:55Speaker 4: same story goes with our SEC football previews during this
- 8:01Speaker 4: three week time period, as fall camps are finally underway.
- 8:05Speaker 4: We've heard from Sark, We're gonna hear from some log
- 8:07Speaker 4: Horn players today. You have an opportunity to get a
- 8:13Speaker 4: preview of some of the other SEC programs, and what
- 8:17Speaker 4: we do is we'll visit with a different play by
- 8:21Speaker 4: play voice of the fifteen other SEC program Somebody texted
- 8:27Speaker 4: in on the text line yesterday Jake, And they said, Jake,
- 8:29Speaker 4: or are you going to be asking Craig about Texas? Since
- 8:31Speaker 4: he's asking all the other play by play guys about
- 8:34Speaker 4: their schools, It's not like we're not talking about Texas.
- 8:38Speaker 2: What is it you think that we do here?
- 8:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, we do.
- 8:41Speaker 4: We have a lot of conversation about the laggards, certainly,
- 8:44Speaker 4: but I appreciate the sentiment. On Monday of this week,
- 8:48Speaker 4: we began the week by visiting with Jeff Danceler, the
- 8:51Speaker 4: newly installed football play by play voice of the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 8:56Speaker 4: He'd been doing baseball, now he's adding football to his duties,
- 8:58Speaker 4: and Jeff joined us to talk about the defending SEC
- 9:03Speaker 4: champion Georgia Bulldogs. On Tuesday, we visited with Chuck Barrett,
- 9:08Speaker 4: play by play voice of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Now, I know,
- 9:11Speaker 4: I know you may be thinking, wait a minute, Georgia
- 9:14Speaker 4: was picked to finish first and Arkansas was picked to
- 9:16Speaker 4: finish last. What's the sequencing on that? There is no sequencing,
- 9:20Speaker 4: it's just whoever is available a certain day. I've been
- 9:24Speaker 4: I've been in touch with all of the guys, and
- 9:26Speaker 4: so we're working out a schedule that works out for
- 9:29Speaker 4: everybody where. A different play by play voice joins us
- 9:33Speaker 4: each day on the show, but it's up to their
- 9:36Speaker 4: schedules on how it works and the time frame and
- 9:38Speaker 4: all of that as well. So that's why it was
- 9:40Speaker 4: Jeff Dantler, the Georgia play by play voice in the
- 9:43Speaker 4: first on the first day on Monday, and then on
- 9:48Speaker 4: Tuesday it was Arkansas Razorbacks play by play voice Chuck Barrett.
- 9:53Speaker 4: On Wednesday, Sean Kelly, the play by play voice of
- 9:57Speaker 4: the Florida Gators, joined us, and yesterday was Tom lee
- 10:00Speaker 4: each the voice of the Kentucky Wildcatching. Today we go
- 10:04Speaker 4: to Mississippi State Startville, Mississippi and what is with our
- 10:07Speaker 4: good friend Neil Price, the play by play voice of
- 10:10Speaker 4: the Mississippi State Bulldog. So we'll do every day we'll
- 10:14Speaker 4: have an opportunity and visit with a different play by
- 10:17Speaker 4: play voice around the SEC to get you into the
- 10:20Speaker 4: SEC mode with our SEC football previews. As I mentioned,
- 10:24Speaker 4: we're gonna hear from Longhorn players. Today, We're gonna hear
- 10:26Speaker 4: from Jelani McDonald, We'll hear from Ryan Niblett, We'll hear
- 10:29Speaker 4: from Hero Canoe and their responsibilities and they're looking forward.
- 10:35Speaker 2: To the coming football season.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Speaking of football, it returned last night Pro Football did
- 10:42Speaker 4: sort of you know it. It was the Hall of
- 10:45Speaker 4: Fame game, and I decided that I wanted to watch
- 10:50Speaker 4: some of it because I normally don't really watch the
- 10:57Speaker 4: Hall of Fame game because very few, if any regular
- 11:02Speaker 4: starters play hardly any reps at all. It's because coaches, certainly,
- 11:08Speaker 4: first preseason game, you don't want to get a key
- 11:10Speaker 4: player hurt, so you're playing a lot of backups and
- 11:12Speaker 4: guys that are also trying to earn roster spots. That
- 11:14Speaker 4: was the case last night, But I was intrigued by
- 11:17Speaker 4: what I might see at the quarterback spot. Carson Beck,
- 11:20Speaker 4: the former Georgia Bulldog and Miami Hurricane who had them
- 11:23Speaker 4: in the National Championship last year playing for the Arizona
- 11:30Speaker 4: Cardinals and then for the Carolina Panthers.
- 11:36Speaker 5: You had one guy that.
- 11:41Speaker 4: We knew we were going to see for Carolina was
- 11:45Speaker 4: Kenny Pickett, the quarterback there that formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 11:49Speaker 4: But what I wanted to see was Haynes King, the
- 11:52Speaker 4: Longview High School product who played for his dad, John King,
- 11:55Speaker 4: a Hall of Fame coach at Longview. They won the
- 11:57Speaker 4: state championship in sixth A Division two. It called that
- 11:59Speaker 4: game back on TV back on twenty eighteen. He started
- 12:02Speaker 4: off his collegiate career Texas A and M and then
- 12:04Speaker 4: after injury, transferred to Georgia Tech. Became the A SEC
- 12:07Speaker 4: Player of the Year last year, but went undrafted. So
- 12:12Speaker 4: signed as a free agent by Carolina and how would
- 12:15Speaker 4: he do? So that's why I wanted to watch some
- 12:18Speaker 4: of it, did you? I know you weren't necessarily kind
- 12:22Speaker 4: of dialed in mentally to trying to watch any of that,
- 12:25Speaker 4: did you.
- 12:25Speaker 7: Well?
- 12:26Speaker 6: I was add at an event and we actually had
- 12:28Speaker 6: a pretty good two screen setup. We had the NFL
- 12:31Speaker 6: the Hall of Fame game on one and the Indiana
- 12:34Speaker 6: Fever Las Vegas Aces game on the other, and the
- 12:37Speaker 6: sound was over there. I actually just finished Christine Brennan's
- 12:40Speaker 6: book Yeah on on Caitlyn Clark, uh huh.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And so I really enjoyed watching that.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Obviously, she had some highs and some lows down the
- 12:49Speaker 6: stretch of that game last night, but I did get
- 12:51Speaker 6: to see a good chunk of the game, including a
- 12:54Speaker 6: couple of really nice throws from Carson bag who maybe
- 12:58Speaker 6: I wasn't the.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Most impressed with coming out of school.
- 13:01Speaker 6: But that game tells me he's going to get a
- 13:03Speaker 6: chance at some point this season to be the guy
- 13:06Speaker 6: for the Arizona Cardinals who want to see what they
- 13:08Speaker 6: have there in what will likely not be a very
- 13:10Speaker 6: good season.
- 13:11Speaker 4: He has a chance to compete I think with Jacobe
- 13:14Speaker 4: Brissett for the starting job there.
- 13:15Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think when they get down to the
- 13:17Speaker 6: end of the year, it's just going to get to
- 13:19Speaker 6: a point where they got to see what they have
- 13:20Speaker 6: because they're going to be picking probably in the top
- 13:23Speaker 6: five or seven again and there's going to be good
- 13:25Speaker 6: quarterbacks coming out next year. So I think he'll get
- 13:28Speaker 6: a shot based on maybe this game. We'll see how
- 13:30Speaker 6: it looks going forward. But Haines King, I mean, did
- 13:32Speaker 6: exactly what you hoped he would, made a big impression,
- 13:37Speaker 6: competed his tail all that's never been a problem for him,
- 13:40Speaker 6: and it was really fun to watch.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Beck completed fifteen or nineteen passes for one hundred and
- 13:46Speaker 4: eighty yards in a touchdown. Had a QB rating if
- 13:50Speaker 4: you care to know about that one twenty five point four.
- 13:52Speaker 4: The new head coach, Michael Lafleur, who'd been the Rams
- 13:54Speaker 4: offensive coordinator was impressed that he wasn't really surprised and
- 13:58Speaker 4: thought they might have an opportunity to do that. And
- 14:02Speaker 4: Haines King not only through two touchdown passes, ran for
- 14:07Speaker 4: the game winning score on the.
- 14:09Speaker 5: Final play of the game.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And as I mentioned yesterday, I got a chance to
- 14:14Speaker 4: visit with him down in Houston a couple of weeks
- 14:16Speaker 4: ago and had a really good chat with him, and
- 14:20Speaker 4: he was looking forward to having the opportunity to compete
- 14:23Speaker 4: and show what he could do for Carolina. And now
- 14:26Speaker 4: we know Bryce Shong is the starter there, but Haines King,
- 14:31Speaker 4: and you know, did he do enough in the first
- 14:34Speaker 4: game to supplant?
- 14:35Speaker 5: Can he pick at his back up? Well? No, but
- 14:37Speaker 5: it's early days yet. That's the thing.
- 14:39Speaker 4: They're gonna have three more preseason games, so he'll have
- 14:43Speaker 4: an opportunity to do that.
- 14:45Speaker 5: So we'll see how that goes all right.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Up next Well, also want to let you know we
- 14:51Speaker 4: do have inconceivable, Jake. We know what inconceivable on a
- 14:54Speaker 4: Friday means, even as you haven't had to deal with
- 14:57Speaker 4: it over the past two Friday.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Yeah, we had a lot of liquid sunshine when I
- 15:02Speaker 6: was in DC. Funny enough, but this time we'll go
- 15:05Speaker 6: to the sunshine state of swampy Florida, where we will
- 15:10Speaker 6: grab the low hanging fruit in the most flaccid of
- 15:13Speaker 6: the lower forty eight for the Friday tradition that is
- 15:16Speaker 6: Florida Man and Florida Woman.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and we got some bad and good news there
- 15:20Speaker 4: for on a Florida Man Friday, So we'll get to that.
- 15:23Speaker 4: So up next, we're going to hear from long worn
- 15:27Speaker 4: football players coming off yesterday's practice and getting ready for
- 15:31Speaker 4: the evening workouts of the weekend. When we continue here
- 15:33Speaker 4: on a Friday on sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 15:35Speaker 4: zone of the iHeartRadio app.
- 15:37Speaker 6: It was.
- 15:41Speaker 8: It's Tuesday, She's gone too far, She's.
- 15:47Speaker 4: She's got here on a Friday from yes So now
- 15:55Speaker 4: there's a part coming up this song that I definitely
- 15:59Speaker 4: want to to bring up because it's going to make
- 16:02Speaker 4: some people smile. This is the song undone spelled u
- 16:07Speaker 4: n d u n u n d u undone Burton
- 16:13Speaker 4: Cummings and the guests who there.
- 16:15Speaker 5: Okay, so.
- 16:18Speaker 4: It's just talking about a girl who had unrealistic expectations
- 16:22Speaker 4: about a lot of things. And so there's a good
- 16:26Speaker 4: little guitar riff here from our end, and again the
- 16:32Speaker 4: guests who on Sunday night in fort Worth and having
- 16:37Speaker 4: Randy Backman one of the co founders there. Also there'll
- 16:39Speaker 4: be some Bachman Turner Overdrive involved in that.
- 16:42Speaker 5: We'll have some bt O for you today.
- 16:46Speaker 4: But this particular cut undone, so it has like a
- 16:51Speaker 4: real guess who's sound, a lot of guitar works and
- 16:55Speaker 4: Burt Coummings vocals editions here all right, so here comes
- 17:03Speaker 4: the part.
- 17:04Speaker 5: It's not often you hear a flute right here.
- 17:09Speaker 9: It's not coming.
- 17:10Speaker 4: It makes me think of anchor Man, what you're gonna
- 17:12Speaker 4: hear right here? Where the flute takes on a major
- 17:18Speaker 4: part in a rock song.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Can't you just see Ron Burgundy playing.
- 17:39Speaker 4: The rock there the jazz, the jazz flutes.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Anyway, I'll tell you what.
- 17:44Speaker 6: I heard this song Craig and instantly thought this should
- 17:47Speaker 6: be in a movie, This should be in a a
- 17:49Speaker 6: in a TV show, And it turns out that it
- 17:52Speaker 6: was recently in a TV show on Apple TV Plus
- 17:55Speaker 6: called Star City. It's an alternate history drama about the
- 17:59Speaker 6: space race from the Soviet perspective.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Really, they came out in May.
- 18:04Speaker 6: So it's funny when you can picture something being in
- 18:07Speaker 6: a movie like I could see this as like a
- 18:09Speaker 6: you know, a montage song for somebody maybe seeing things.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Fall apart yep.
- 18:15Speaker 5: And then he's got the ending right here.
- 18:17Speaker 8: Geez, come.
- 18:24Speaker 2: That's good.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Here it is love that yeah, undone off of that.
- 18:33Speaker 4: So yeah, we're hitting back with some guests who and
- 18:35Speaker 4: some bto today on the program, Let's hit hit you
- 18:39Speaker 4: with some Loghorn sound talking about it with Jelani McDonald.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Loghorn's veteran safety and one thing he's asked about. If
- 18:48Speaker 4: you watch Jolannie play, you know he's an energy guy,
- 18:53Speaker 4: brings it and tries to inspire that amongst his teammates
- 18:57Speaker 4: as well.
- 18:59Speaker 10: I'm pretty much had that in my whole football career.
- 19:01Speaker 10: I've been that guy, you know, to get everybody going.
- 19:04Speaker 7: So did had none another day? Yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Everybody likes to talk about the outside noise that's going
- 19:10Speaker 4: to come, expectations for the program, good, bad, and different whatever,
- 19:14Speaker 4: and John was asked about it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: How do you go about blocking out the outside noise?
- 19:19Speaker 10: I just make sure you know, we stand tunnel vision man,
- 19:22Speaker 10: just making sure that we're we're on top of everything,
- 19:25Speaker 10: whether it's you know, our weight, whether it's you know,
- 19:29Speaker 10: our plays or.
- 19:30Speaker 7: Things like that.
- 19:30Speaker 10: Just making sure we're you know, technical, technical sound and
- 19:34Speaker 10: making sure like we take care of the small details things.
- 19:36Speaker 7: Of that nature.
- 19:37Speaker 9: You know.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Part of what a football team tries to do is
- 19:42Speaker 4: help the guys who are cross training or making adjustments
- 19:45Speaker 4: to other spots. Kobe Black falls into that category. He
- 19:47Speaker 4: played corner, he's played some nickel. He's making that adjustment
- 19:51Speaker 4: over to safety. And Julyannie was asked about the fact
- 19:55Speaker 4: that Black has had to make these adjustments.
- 19:57Speaker 10: Yeah, man, it was. It's awesome, man, seeing him come back.
- 20:01Speaker 10: He's joining the family. He's always been a part of
- 20:03Speaker 10: the family really, but it's just awesome to see him,
- 20:05Speaker 10: you know, developing a different position. You know, being able
- 20:09Speaker 10: to do multiple things is you know, always a good thing,
- 20:12Speaker 10: you know, in this league. So just been able to
- 20:14Speaker 10: see his development over you know, in the film room,
- 20:17Speaker 10: on the field, just overall as an.
- 20:18Speaker 7: Athlete and man.
- 20:19Speaker 4: And it's not like Kobe Black has never played safety before,
- 20:23Speaker 4: pointed out by McDonald, he here's a guy who also
- 20:25Speaker 4: played it in high school.
- 20:26Speaker 10: He did, Actually, he did play safety in high school
- 20:29Speaker 10: around his single year, I believe, so, so yeah, he
- 20:31Speaker 10: already know his second nature all right.
- 20:34Speaker 4: One the other the comment here from Jolani McDonald's has
- 20:39Speaker 4: about uh, coach Tory back then now if you if
- 20:43Speaker 4: you learned anything, and we've learned a lot more in
- 20:47Speaker 4: I would say the past decade, maybe decade plus, about
- 20:50Speaker 4: the importance of strength and conditioning, and not only the
- 20:55Speaker 4: importance of the strengthen conditioning, but the importance of the
- 20:59Speaker 4: strengthening conditioning or you know whatever you call it athletic
- 21:03Speaker 4: performance coach or coaches and the bond they establish with
- 21:09Speaker 4: these players because they're around them more than the coaches.
- 21:13Speaker 4: They're around them more than some of the other because
- 21:15Speaker 4: they're in the weight room, they're they're on the track
- 21:18Speaker 4: with them, they're on the field with them, they're around
- 21:20Speaker 4: them all the time. So yes, they're urging them to
- 21:24Speaker 4: improve their physical nature, but also in terms of their
- 21:26Speaker 4: mental acumen and the emotional part of that. And coach
- 21:30Speaker 4: Tory Beckton has the gold star type of thing that
- 21:35Speaker 4: he does. And and one guy was asked about the
- 21:38Speaker 4: gold star was Jeelani McDonald.
- 21:40Speaker 10: I'm a great guy, great guy. So I mean it
- 21:47Speaker 10: means just keep working hard, man, and just keep going
- 21:49Speaker 10: to get.
- 21:50Speaker 6: It for me.
- 21:50Speaker 4: So Yeah, that's what a gold star means. You get
- 21:53Speaker 4: the gold star means you're a good guy. You're doing
- 21:54Speaker 4: your job. Another guy who is a good guy's Ryan Niblett.
- 21:58Speaker 4: We got to know Ryan lash with what he did
- 22:01Speaker 4: in pump returns and kick off returns against Oklahoma, the
- 22:04Speaker 4: massive returns against Kentucky and Mississippi State.
- 22:07Speaker 2: We also learned he had a new born daughter last year.
- 22:11Speaker 4: Was, you know, only a couple of months old, that
- 22:13Speaker 4: sort of thing, And it was fun visiting about with her.
- 22:17Speaker 4: About that after games and he was asked about the the.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Teddy bear that he has with his daughter's name.
- 22:24Speaker 11: I just missed my daughter, man, I just feel like
- 22:27Speaker 11: I just hate being away from her. So I just
- 22:30Speaker 11: wanted me to I just wanted to bring something that
- 22:32Speaker 11: reminded me of her every day.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's got this teddy bear with her name. Now,
- 22:35Speaker 4: how about the motivation that Nibblett derives from being around
- 22:40Speaker 4: his daughter.
- 22:41Speaker 11: It's crazy because I was playing this to my teammates
- 22:43Speaker 11: like all the time. It's like I say this even
- 22:45Speaker 11: on my bad days, Like I can come home and
- 22:47Speaker 11: she smile and it's like it'll make me want to
- 22:49Speaker 11: do it all over again. So it just pushes like that.
- 22:52Speaker 11: It just give me that extra m you know what
- 22:53Speaker 11: I'm saying.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And as a new father, Ryan Nibble is not above
- 22:59Speaker 4: asking other people he knows on how to be a
- 23:04Speaker 4: better dad dad advice if you will.
- 23:06Speaker 11: Definitely Jayleen Gilbo because you know we was right in
- 23:08Speaker 11: the same area the same time, so they definitely get
- 23:11Speaker 11: Jayleen Gulbo.
- 23:11Speaker 8: We talked about it all the time. You know, his
- 23:13Speaker 8: daughter just.
- 23:13Speaker 11: Turned one, My daughter birthday in eighteen days, so I'm
- 23:16Speaker 11: getting ready for that.
- 23:17Speaker 4: All right, back to the football. So what's different at
- 23:20Speaker 4: least what he might have noticed different about the team
- 23:23Speaker 4: this time this year, this time going around?
- 23:26Speaker 11: Overall, how together we are just a running back and
- 23:30Speaker 11: running backs included, just how together we are.
- 23:32Speaker 8: We can talk about anything.
- 23:35Speaker 11: Like last year I'll say, like you can tell there's
- 23:37Speaker 11: running backs over here and running backs over here we
- 23:38Speaker 11: would all together.
- 23:39Speaker 8: But this year, like we laughed, we joked.
- 23:41Speaker 11: Together, and we just we just put it all together
- 23:43Speaker 11: and make good friendships.
- 23:44Speaker 8: With each other.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Okay, all right, And with regard to special teams, his
- 23:49Speaker 4: specialty even though we can play running back receiver and
- 23:52Speaker 4: catch passes out of the back, that we saw that
- 23:54Speaker 4: he can run the ball as well, but where he's
- 23:56Speaker 4: been most dangerous is.
- 23:57Speaker 2: In kick returning and pump returning.
- 23:59Speaker 4: And he discussed how the staff is helping special teams.
- 24:02Speaker 11: One thing coaches say is like this special team is
- 24:05Speaker 11: one third of a game.
- 24:06Speaker 8: It's not the full game, you know what I'm saying.
- 24:07Speaker 11: And they just overemphasized like everything the little stuff, especially
- 24:11Speaker 11: to the freshmans.
- 24:12Speaker 8: They want the freshmans to.
- 24:13Speaker 11: Start on special teams and to give the old guys break.
- 24:16Speaker 11: So it's like special team is very vital to the
- 24:18Speaker 11: young guys.
- 24:19Speaker 9: All right.
- 24:20Speaker 4: And then as I mentioned, this is a guy who
- 24:22Speaker 4: helped out both in terms of catching passes how the
- 24:26Speaker 4: backfield and even running the ball as well. So what
- 24:28Speaker 4: can Ryan Nibblet do on the offensive side in addition
- 24:31Speaker 4: to his special teams contributions.
- 24:34Speaker 11: I'm more of, like I say, like a gadget role
- 24:37Speaker 11: just to put me like lom me up out the receiver,
- 24:39Speaker 11: running bag or just anything like however they want to
- 24:42Speaker 11: use me.
- 24:43Speaker 4: All right, So there's some from Ryan Nibley now that
- 24:45Speaker 4: the defensive side hero canoe being the defensivelyer coming back
- 24:50Speaker 4: for that fifth years to Sceenior. Remember he had transferred
- 24:53Speaker 4: in from Ohio State, and he was asked about you
- 24:56Speaker 4: know the preseason rankings. Ohio State is numberable one in
- 25:00Speaker 4: the coaches poll. Texas is number four. We've not seen
- 25:03Speaker 4: the AP ranking chet but we will. They're coming out soon.
- 25:07Speaker 4: So when Ohio State arrives here on the twelfth of September,
- 25:16Speaker 4: and when the log Worns get ready to host them
- 25:21Speaker 4: on September twelfth, and of course Texas will open with
- 25:24Speaker 4: Texas State, and if they handle their business and do
- 25:28Speaker 4: what they're supposed to do, they would be one to oher.
- 25:30Speaker 4: And of course Ohio State, which is number one in
- 25:34Speaker 4: that preseason coaches poll, and good chance they'll be number
- 25:39Speaker 4: one in the AP poll as well. They open at
- 25:42Speaker 4: home against ball State. Quick trivia for you there, Jake.
- 25:47Speaker 4: You know where ball State is?
- 25:48Speaker 9: Sure?
- 25:48Speaker 7: Do you do? You?
- 25:49Speaker 2: How should I reveal it? Or yeah? Sure?
- 25:51Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 25:51Speaker 5: No, no, no, go ahead and say it.
- 25:52Speaker 6: I've never been to the bustling metropolis that is Munsey, Indiana,
- 25:56Speaker 6: but I know that's where Ball State is.
- 25:58Speaker 5: I've been through Munsey one time.
- 25:59Speaker 4: It was an in the middle of the night, driving
- 26:01Speaker 4: from South Bend after Texas had opened. The twenty fourteen
- 26:05Speaker 4: College football season in South Bend, Indiana lost to Notre Dame,
- 26:11Speaker 4: and Roger Wallace and I had to fly back from
- 26:13Speaker 4: Indianapolis because we both had to get back, and so
- 26:16Speaker 4: instead of waiting to fly from South Bend, we drove
- 26:20Speaker 4: during the deep night from South Bend to Indianapolis and
- 26:23Speaker 4: went and went right past months Hee, Indiana. But anyway,
- 26:26Speaker 4: they're playing ball State.
- 26:27Speaker 6: Yeah, they're play by play voice is another alum of
- 26:30Speaker 6: Beck Sports in Bismar, North Dakota. Really, that's how I
- 26:33Speaker 6: knew that for ball State, the ball State Mick Tindraw,
- 26:35Speaker 6: the voice of the Cardinals.
- 26:36Speaker 5: How long has he been doing that?
- 26:38Speaker 2: Think about five six years?
- 26:41Speaker 5: Okay, so you've gotten no in then.
- 26:43Speaker 2: Just connected gotcha one.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Well, if Ohio State handles its business against ball State
- 26:51Speaker 4: and the long Worns handled their business against Texas State,
- 26:54Speaker 4: clearly they'll both be top five teams at the very
- 26:58Speaker 4: least in the coaches. Like I said, Ohio State's number
- 27:01Speaker 4: one in Texas is number four. There is a chance
- 27:04Speaker 4: in the ap pole that Ohio State could be number
- 27:06Speaker 4: one and Texas could be number three or number two
- 27:08Speaker 4: or whatever. They would almost certainly both be top five
- 27:13Speaker 4: ranked opponents. So a guy who has seen it from
- 27:17Speaker 4: both sides, hero canoe playing for Ohio State and then
- 27:21Speaker 4: for Texas. What does he think about all those preseason
- 27:24Speaker 4: rankings in Ohio State at number one.
- 27:26Speaker 12: I mean, you know, like all these like preseason stuff.
- 27:31Speaker 12: You know, it really doesn't matter because at the end
- 27:33Speaker 12: of the day, whoever wins that game. You know, if
- 27:36Speaker 12: we win that game, when we win that game, it's okay,
- 27:38Speaker 12: then we're gonna be above. Then they're gonna be dropping
- 27:40Speaker 12: the win another game in the regular season, they're gonna
- 27:42Speaker 12: be going higher, you know, and so on and so on.
- 27:44Speaker 12: So all the preseason stuff doesn't really matter to us.
- 27:47Speaker 7: It's met us. What said at the end of the season.
- 27:49Speaker 4: Yeah uh and good words spoken there, because you got
- 27:52Speaker 4: to handle your business and conference play.
- 27:54Speaker 2: They have a chance to play for a conference title.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Listens, as Sark said last year, Ryan Day said, whoever
- 28:01Speaker 4: was going to win that game, Yeah, they get a
- 28:03Speaker 4: good national leg up, but the loser was not going
- 28:05Speaker 4: to be damaged by playing that game. And then of
- 28:09Speaker 4: course that leads into the debate about Texas and the
- 28:12Speaker 4: third loss and if they you know, the one side
- 28:15Speaker 4: saying you, well, if you hadn't lost to Florida, you'd
- 28:17Speaker 4: been in the playoff, And then the other side saying, well,
- 28:19Speaker 4: if they hadn't played Ohio State and played a lower
- 28:21Speaker 4: level Division one FBS opponent, an opponent they could have played.
- 28:25Speaker 2: At home in one off Indiana.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Yeah right, they would have been ten and two, and
- 28:30Speaker 4: then they would have gotten in into the College Football Playoff.
- 28:33Speaker 7: That thing.
- 28:33Speaker 4: We can go round and round chasing our tail on
- 28:35Speaker 4: that debate forever and ever and all that.
- 28:38Speaker 6: Yeah comes, I mean not really, they would have been
- 28:40Speaker 6: above Oklahoma had both teams had two losses.
- 28:42Speaker 2: So I don't really know how you can go round
- 28:43Speaker 2: and round about it.
- 28:44Speaker 4: Oh, because the round and round refers to those who
- 28:47Speaker 4: very quickly point out, can't lose to Florida. If you
- 28:50Speaker 4: didn't lose to Florida, that were not having this conversation.
- 28:52Speaker 4: They're exactly right. And so two are the people who
- 28:55Speaker 4: said what you just said, if they played somebody other
- 28:58Speaker 4: than somebody of that Aliburn played a directional was it
- 29:03Speaker 4: vic Schaeffer.
- 29:03Speaker 5: Whits three.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Hops defense?
- 29:07Speaker 4: You're right right now, they're not going to play an
- 29:09Speaker 4: FCS opponent. They haven't played an FCS opponent since two
- 29:12Speaker 4: thousand and six, and that's when sam Houston was still
- 29:16Speaker 4: FCS and the only reason they played that game is
- 29:19Speaker 4: because I think it was Minnesota that dropped out late.
- 29:22Speaker 4: And that was the year the schedule expanded to twelve
- 29:24Speaker 4: regular season games, so Texas had to scramble just to
- 29:27Speaker 4: find the twelfth opponent, and it was sam Houston. Since then,
- 29:30Speaker 4: they've not played an FCS opponent. They played only FBS opponents.
- 29:34Speaker 4: But they could have played a lower tiered, lower rung
- 29:37Speaker 4: FBS opponent and gotten to win, played it at home,
- 29:42Speaker 4: they would have been ten and two, and then like
- 29:44Speaker 4: you mentioned Oklahoma, and they'd have they had to ad
- 29:46Speaker 4: win over Oklahoma and Texas would have been in the playoffs.
- 29:48Speaker 5: That's the one side.
- 29:49Speaker 4: The other side is, yes, if you don't lose the
- 29:51Speaker 4: conference game, go a sub five hundred team in Florida.
- 29:53Speaker 4: The conversation doesn't have I see both.
- 29:55Speaker 5: Sides of it.
- 29:56Speaker 4: I understand both sides of it, and as much as
- 30:01Speaker 4: folks will dig in their heels on one side of
- 30:03Speaker 4: the issue, on the other those are It's that the
- 30:06Speaker 4: thing about two things can be true, both elements can
- 30:10Speaker 4: be true on that so a loss or a win
- 30:15Speaker 4: over Ohio State, a loss certainly wouldn't damage much. A
- 30:18Speaker 4: win certainly helps, but you still got to handle your
- 30:21Speaker 4: business in conference play. You still have to take care
- 30:24Speaker 4: of your conference games in order to qualify for the
- 30:27Speaker 4: SEC Championship, which raises your profile and also your national
- 30:30Speaker 4: profile for the playoff.
- 30:33Speaker 5: One more from Hero Canoe.
- 30:35Speaker 4: We were just hearing from Jelani McDonald, and Canoe is
- 30:39Speaker 4: one of those guys because Hero is a leader as
- 30:43Speaker 4: well as an imposing force on defensive front. But he'll
- 30:47Speaker 4: quickly tell you that Jelani McDonald has really emerged as
- 30:51Speaker 4: a defensive leader of this team.
- 30:53Speaker 7: Oh he's vocal.
- 30:54Speaker 12: I mean, he's out there, he's behind me, he's behind
- 30:57Speaker 12: all the big guys. So he's trying to make sure
- 30:59Speaker 12: everybody's con unicating. Well, he's making sure backing is on
- 31:01Speaker 12: the same page. That's probably the biggest thing. He can
- 31:04Speaker 12: step up and lead, Like let's say we're gonna be
- 31:06Speaker 12: out there by ourselves.
- 31:07Speaker 7: And you know there's some extra work.
- 31:09Speaker 12: He's one of the guys that can organize that, that
- 31:11Speaker 12: can get everybody together and he got everybody's respect as well.
- 31:14Speaker 4: All Right, we'll hear more from those guys coming up
- 31:17Speaker 4: next hour, Up next Inconceivable on a Friday on Sports
- 31:21Speaker 4: Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app
- 31:27Speaker 4: stay second hour of the program here on Sports Radio
- 31:37Speaker 4: AM thirteen under the zone.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I'm not an American woman, I'm an American.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Man, but glad to be with you.
- 31:43Speaker 4: Craig Wait with the ear on a Friday afternoon alongside
- 31:45Speaker 4: the producer Jay Carman. Like you said, this weekend, it's
- 31:49Speaker 4: Guess Who weekend in four worlds, the Guess Who with
- 31:53Speaker 4: those dulcin tones of Burton Cummings as well as Randy Bachman,
- 31:57Speaker 4: who of course later as a founding member of Bachman
- 31:59Speaker 4: Turner Overdriving. So they're appearing in fort Worth and Linda
- 32:02Speaker 4: and I are going to go up my American woman. Linda,
- 32:05Speaker 4: my wife, will go up to Fort Worth for that
- 32:08Speaker 4: show that's on Sunday night. So we're bumping back with
- 32:12Speaker 4: Guess Who. And and also I'll tell you what, when
- 32:15Speaker 4: we get to the time when the Doobie Brothers in
- 32:19Speaker 4: Santana come to town, we'll hit with Doobies in Santana on
- 32:22Speaker 4: a given day.
- 32:23Speaker 6: Oh yeah, maybe we'll get some different stylings from what
- 32:25Speaker 6: we hear on Wednesdays.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 32:27Speaker 4: And then and then additionally, when we have Chicago and
- 32:31Speaker 4: Sticks come into town.
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yep, we'll do the same.
- 32:34Speaker 6: Oh I think I've got I'll save my stick stuff
- 32:36Speaker 6: for that day.
- 32:38Speaker 5: You got some sticks it.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Well, but mostly from my dad.
- 32:40Speaker 4: But you know, I started to say, and Styx was
- 32:43Speaker 4: one of the bands that I when I sold merch
- 32:46Speaker 4: when I was in college. I worked the Paradise Theater
- 32:48Speaker 4: tour in eighty one, the Mister Roboto Tour, worked a
- 32:52Speaker 4: couple of shows of that in nineteen eighty.
- 32:55Speaker 6: Have you ever seen the rest of development, Craig, Yes,
- 32:57Speaker 6: Buster getting his hook stuck in the staircase.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Are absolutely so. Yeah, it's good that that calls that
- 33:04Speaker 4: to mind. So yeah, we'll do that. And whenever we
- 33:08Speaker 4: have a musical act coming to town, or one that
- 33:11Speaker 4: one of us is planning to see, as I will
- 33:15Speaker 4: on Sunday night in Fort Worth, that's why we hit
- 33:17Speaker 4: back with some return cuts today. And that one is probably,
- 33:22Speaker 4: believe it or not, it might be their most well
- 33:24Speaker 4: known hit American one.
- 33:26Speaker 6: It was the one you knew, right, I was the
- 33:27Speaker 6: one that popped to mind to me this afternoon when
- 33:30Speaker 6: you said we're going with guests who and Balkwa turn
- 33:32Speaker 6: her overdrive.
- 33:33Speaker 4: And I remember my sister had this single and I
- 33:37Speaker 4: think in nineteen seventy she had this single. She and
- 33:40Speaker 4: I was only like nine going on ten, but I
- 33:42Speaker 4: remember that. I remember my sister, who was my oldest sibling,
- 33:45Speaker 4: having that single at the time as a teenager. But
- 33:51Speaker 4: it was it might be about as well known as
- 33:53Speaker 4: any of their catalog and then it became kind of renown.
- 33:57Speaker 4: It kind of got a resurgence. Who was that covered
- 33:59Speaker 4: it or somebody Lenny Kravitz maybe I don't remember. I
- 34:03Speaker 4: just remember somebody covering it later and I thought, Okay,
- 34:06Speaker 4: it's not bad.
- 34:07Speaker 6: Yeah, Lenny Kravitz has got the famous cover of it
- 34:10Speaker 6: from Uh it was it was in the Austin Powers soundtrack.
- 34:13Speaker 7: That's it. That's it.
- 34:14Speaker 4: I do remember that, but I'd rather have the guests
- 34:18Speaker 4: who a signal of that?
- 34:21Speaker 5: Okay.
- 34:23Speaker 4: Coming up here in this hour of the program, a
- 34:26Speaker 4: lot of college football to discussed, and also we'll give
- 34:30Speaker 4: away a copy of Dave Camil's Texas Football magazine.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Uh And and also.
- 34:35Speaker 4: We'll hear from long worn players as well. But before
- 34:38Speaker 4: we do that here in this first segment, there was
- 34:41Speaker 4: a piece that was pinned by. And one thing I've
- 34:46Speaker 4: learned about ESPN is when they do their college football pieces,
- 34:50Speaker 4: they have some really talented writers, and what we have
- 34:53Speaker 4: referred to some of their articles, Bill Conley being one
- 34:55Speaker 4: of those, Jake Trotter being one of those as well.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Some of their best work, however, is when it's a
- 35:01Speaker 4: combined amalgam of several others.
- 35:04Speaker 5: And so they did that with a piece.
- 35:08Speaker 4: Entitled college Football arch Enemies for every Power Conference team. So,
- 35:15Speaker 4: for example, when you're looking at who you know, as
- 35:19Speaker 4: they say, we compile a list of the arch enemies
- 35:22Speaker 4: of every school in the Power four and the stories
- 35:25Speaker 4: that make them public enemy number one on campus, be
- 35:28Speaker 4: sure to have your an acid or blood pressure medication
- 35:30Speaker 4: handy before reading on. Okay, for Alabama, you'd say, you
- 35:35Speaker 4: know who could be Arch's dominant as Aben Cam Newton.
- 35:37Speaker 6: That's right, That's very accurate for having grown up in
- 35:40Speaker 6: an Alabama household.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Was this was right?
- 35:44Speaker 5: You think about it.
- 35:44Speaker 4: In twenty ten, Auburn trailed Alabama twenty four to nothing
- 35:49Speaker 4: in the second quarter and then Cam Newton passed for
- 35:52Speaker 4: three touchdowns ran for another. They came back when twenty
- 35:54Speaker 4: eight twenty seven it knows the cam back and Auburn
- 35:58Speaker 4: went on to win the national championship. For Arkansas, hey
- 36:01Speaker 4: take a number Texas Longhorns, right, they pointed out. Longhorns
- 36:06Speaker 4: coach Steve Sarkishan was introduced to Arkansas fans in his
- 36:08Speaker 4: second game of Texas in twenty twenty one at forty
- 36:11Speaker 4: twenty one Razorbacks win. After the long Horns moved to
- 36:14Speaker 4: the SEC and the Arkansas rivalry was renewed as a
- 36:16Speaker 4: conference game, Sarkisian quipped that he realized they hate Texas
- 36:20Speaker 4: more than they liked themselves, and Arkansas coach Sam Pittman
- 36:24Speaker 4: said he's probably right. Old Southwest Conference rivalry had its
- 36:29Speaker 4: darkest moment for the Hogs in the nineteen sixty nine
- 36:32Speaker 4: Big shootout between number one Texas and number two Arkansas,
- 36:36Speaker 4: with the Razorbacks taking a fourteen to nothing lead into
- 36:39Speaker 4: the fourth quarter before losing fifteen to fourteen after James
- 36:42Speaker 4: Street's heroics led Texas back and Arkansas's Bill Montgomery through
- 36:47Speaker 4: two interceptions. President Richard Nixon presented Texas with a national
- 36:51Speaker 4: title plaque at Razorbacks Stadium in nineteen seventy seven. Who
- 36:55Speaker 4: holds his Razorbacks finished number three in the country with
- 36:58Speaker 4: one loss to Texas.
- 37:00Speaker 5: That's when they had Earl Campbell.
- 37:02Speaker 4: You know, the other things that come to mind about
- 37:05Speaker 4: what they're saying about the Arkansas Texas bit is that
- 37:10Speaker 4: there's one moment that is as painful to at least
- 37:14Speaker 4: to the old school Texas fans as the nineteen sixty
- 37:18Speaker 4: nine memory to old school fans is for Arkansas with
- 37:22Speaker 4: them losing the Big shootout sixty four ward, Texas was
- 37:24Speaker 4: the defending national champion and they had Arkansas coming in
- 37:28Speaker 4: the town on a Saturday night game at DKR back
- 37:32Speaker 4: then just Memorial Stadium in Austin, and that night Ken Hatfield,
- 37:39Speaker 4: later an Arkansas head coach and Rice head coach, was
- 37:42Speaker 4: playing for the Razorbacks, had an eighty one yard punt
- 37:45Speaker 4: return for a touchdown and the margin of victory was
- 37:49Speaker 4: a missed extra point by Texas. They lost fourteen thirteen.
- 37:53Speaker 4: It was the only game Texas lost that year. They
- 37:56Speaker 4: wound up going to the Orange Bowl and beating Joe
- 37:58Speaker 4: Namath and Alibama, who had been crown national champions in
- 38:02Speaker 4: the Coaches Pole. Arkansas went on did not lose the game,
- 38:06Speaker 4: beat Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl and won what was
- 38:09Speaker 4: called the Football Writers Association National Championship Ball. It kind
- 38:13Speaker 4: of liked the AP although there was an AP pole
- 38:15Speaker 4: as well, But that was Arkansas's won national championship on
- 38:20Speaker 4: that Arkansas team. Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson, Wow, they
- 38:24Speaker 4: played on that nineteen six so they had their own
- 38:26Speaker 4: memory about that as well. Arkansas fans may also remember
- 38:29Speaker 4: the Y two K Cotton Bowl when they beat Texas
- 38:32Speaker 4: when Major Applewhite had then suffered the knee injury towards
- 38:36Speaker 4: ACL and Houston Nutt doing horns down the head coach
- 38:39Speaker 4: of Arkansas coming off the field, and of course the
- 38:42Speaker 4: long runs have had more of the last laughs. They've
- 38:45Speaker 4: beaten them more times, you know, over the years as well.
- 38:48Speaker 4: For Auburn, it's Harvey Updyke, the tree poisoner. Yeah, the
- 38:53Speaker 4: tree poisoner called in on Paul five BOMs show about
- 38:58Speaker 4: poisoning the Conicoach tree of Tumor's Corner. He later pleaded
- 39:02Speaker 4: guilty to applying herbicide to the trees, was sentenced to
- 39:06Speaker 4: seventy days in jail eight hundred thousand dollars in restitution.
- 39:11Speaker 4: He had a son named Bear in honor of Bear
- 39:15Speaker 4: Bryant and a daughter named Crimson. He later told fire
- 39:19Speaker 4: to have too much Bammy and me. He died in
- 39:22Speaker 4: twenty twenty. For Florida, it's Lindsay Scott. That's the famous
- 39:26Speaker 4: call there by Larry Munson run Lindsay running the buck
- 39:31Speaker 4: Blue Pass in nineteen eighty and they went on to
- 39:34Speaker 4: win the national championship as well. For Georgia, it's Steve Spurrier,
- 39:40Speaker 4: because Florida dominated Georgia in that world's largest outdoor cocktail
- 39:44Speaker 4: party when they went eleven and one. For Kentucky, it's
- 39:48Speaker 4: Steve Spurrier they dominated then as well. For LSU, Nick
- 39:54Speaker 4: Saban really because remember they won a national championship with
- 39:57Speaker 4: Nick Saban, of course, but then he he left after
- 40:00Speaker 4: that for the Miami Dolphins, didn't stay that long in
- 40:03Speaker 4: the NFL, returned to Alabama and built what they're calling
- 40:09Speaker 4: the greatest dynasty in the modern era. Beat twenty beat
- 40:11Speaker 4: LSU twenty one nothing for the national title after the
- 40:14Speaker 4: twenty eleven season, then won the next seven games in
- 40:18Speaker 4: the series. He went four and one against Alabama when
- 40:20Speaker 4: he was at LSU did save him, but he finished
- 40:23Speaker 4: twelve and five at l against LSU after joining the
- 40:25Speaker 4: Crimson Tide as well.
- 40:27Speaker 6: Yeah, and a couple of those losses were the early years,
- 40:30Speaker 6: the John Parker Wilson years.
- 40:31Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely, For Mississippi State, it's Jalen Walton and Jordan Wilkins.
- 40:39Speaker 5: That's going to be egg boll stuff.
- 40:41Speaker 4: Losing to Ole, miss Wilkins had a forty one yard
- 40:44Speaker 4: run hit Cody Gore corp a thirty one yard touchdown
- 40:50Speaker 4: as they won that came back to beat to beat
- 40:54Speaker 4: them by a score of seventeen to ten. All right, Missouri.
- 40:58Speaker 4: Curtis Lofton. Curtis Lofton was Oklahoma's linebacker. Two thousand season
- 41:07Speaker 4: was a good Missouri team. They lost twice to Ou,
- 41:10Speaker 4: including in the Big Teal championship game, which I think
- 41:13Speaker 4: was in the Alamodome that year, so they beat them,
- 41:16Speaker 4: or that one might have been in Kansas City, but anyway,
- 41:18Speaker 4: they beat him in the Big twelve championship. For Oklahoma,
- 41:22Speaker 4: it's Darren Royal because coach Royal, of course, was an
- 41:25Speaker 4: All American quarterback at Oklahoma for nineteen forty six to
- 41:28Speaker 4: ninety forty nine. He was from Hollis, Oklahoma, and then
- 41:31Speaker 4: of course he coached Texas beat Ou twelve the next
- 41:36Speaker 4: thirteen times. Remember later he accused as Sooners coach Berry
- 41:40Speaker 4: Switzer spying on his team, called him I think he
- 41:42Speaker 4: called him sorry bastards a thing or something like that.
- 41:46Speaker 4: So it was quite a bit. His final game wound
- 41:49Speaker 4: up as a six to sixth tie off of that.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Oklahoma fans, by the way, if they want to try
- 41:54Speaker 4: to take a jab at Texas fans, quite often we'll say, hey,
- 41:58Speaker 4: the best guy in your history came from our state, Oklahoma,
- 42:00Speaker 4: because Texas fans quite often point out that Oklahoma, you know,
- 42:04Speaker 4: raged Texas to get some of their best recruits, you know,
- 42:08Speaker 4: including that like Billy Simms coming from Hooks, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 4: that sort of thing. So for Oklahoma they list Del Royle.
- 42:16Speaker 4: For Ole Miss, it's Lane Kiffin because he left Ole
- 42:22Speaker 4: Miss for LSU, and it's and it's what he said,
- 42:25Speaker 4: not just what he did exactly. For South Carolina, Marquez North.
- 42:31Speaker 4: That was against Tennessee when it when they got hurt there,
- 42:36Speaker 4: when they had an opportunity when they had Gedevian Clowley,
- 42:40Speaker 4: they were a big favorite against Tennessee, ended up losing
- 42:42Speaker 4: twenty three twenty one.
- 42:43Speaker 5: For Tennessee.
- 42:44Speaker 4: Uh, there's that man, Againsteve Spurrier. Steve Spurrier was the
- 42:48Speaker 4: guy who said he kent spell Citrus without ut when
- 42:51Speaker 4: they were keeping them out of the Sugar Bowl by
- 42:52Speaker 4: winning the SEC when he was coaching Florida. You know,
- 42:55Speaker 4: Peyton Manning was thirty two and five as a starting
- 42:59Speaker 4: quarterback at Tennessee, but three of the five losses came
- 43:01Speaker 4: to Spurrier and the Gators. So it was that and
- 43:04Speaker 4: including being blown out in ninety five OS Tennessee's only
- 43:07Speaker 4: loss of the year.
- 43:08Speaker 5: For Texas.
- 43:09Speaker 4: It's only fair to say Barry Switzer if you for
- 43:12Speaker 4: Oklahoma can say dear Royal because Switzer never lost to
- 43:16Speaker 4: coach roy He.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Went three to oho to one against him.
- 43:19Speaker 4: He finished with a nine to five and two record
- 43:22Speaker 4: against Texas. So h that's what they're they say, is
- 43:27Speaker 4: Texas public enemy number one for Texas A and M Well,
- 43:30Speaker 4: it's the Texas Longhorns, uh, just as it is for
- 43:33Speaker 4: Arkansas as the Longhorns. It's uh is it's seventy eight,
- 43:36Speaker 4: thirty seven and five. I think the record is talking
- 43:39Speaker 4: about the last time they met. His Big twelve Conference
- 43:41Speaker 4: moments when Justin Tucker hit the walk off forty yard
- 43:43Speaker 4: field goal then and then, of course the Long Horns
- 43:48Speaker 4: have won the first two games in that rivalry Vanderbilt.
- 43:51Speaker 4: They call it institutional apathy as their biggest thing. They're
- 43:57Speaker 4: they're oh and sixty all time against ap top five
- 44:01Speaker 4: teams until they beat Alabama a couple of years ago
- 44:04Speaker 4: and finished with a ten win campaign for the first
- 44:06Speaker 4: time in one hundred and twenty two years. Things are
- 44:08Speaker 4: flipping there though. In Nashville they're renovating. They've been renovating
- 44:12Speaker 4: the football stadium when it was up there for baseball.
- 44:15Speaker 4: It's gotten better and better in the football stadium and
- 44:19Speaker 4: what the renovations are going there. Just some other quick
- 44:22Speaker 4: ones in the Big Ten. For Illinois's Hayden Fried, the
- 44:24Speaker 4: long time Iowa coach. For Indiana's Joe Tiller, the long
- 44:27Speaker 4: time per Due coach, it really struggled against them. For Iowa,
- 44:31Speaker 4: Eric Ball, the.
- 44:34Speaker 2: UCLA running back, thought it was going to say the
- 44:35Speaker 2: forward pass.
- 44:37Speaker 4: They had a shot, did Iowa to win the national
- 44:41Speaker 4: championship in eighty five when they were coached by Hayden Fry,
- 44:43Speaker 4: and they got blown out by UCLA, which had the
- 44:48Speaker 4: second string freshman running back. Eric Ball ran for two
- 44:50Speaker 4: hundred and twenty seven yards and tied a Rose Bull
- 44:53Speaker 4: record with four rushing touchdowns. For Maryland Joe Paterno. Because
- 44:57Speaker 4: Maryland just could not beat Joe. They they dominated this.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Paterno never lost to Maryland. Maryland had a tie with
- 45:09Speaker 4: him in nineteen eighty nine. From Michigan State, it's most
- 45:12Speaker 4: sham Beckler because of what he did all those years
- 45:15Speaker 4: coaching Michigan to their wins over the Spartans. He went
- 45:20Speaker 4: seventeen and four against them. For Michigan, it's what he hates.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Ohio State, he dominated. Loved that quote that one time
- 45:26Speaker 4: when they win. They went up forty four to fourteen
- 45:30Speaker 4: in nineteen sixty eight and they scored touchdown late and
- 45:34Speaker 4: they go for two. And they asked him, why did
- 45:35Speaker 4: you go for two? He said, because I couldn't go
- 45:37Speaker 4: for three. What he hates into the four the Michigan Wolverines.
- 45:44Speaker 4: For Minnesota, it's Brett Beedelima, who's done a good job.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Never lost to Minnesota, both in Wisconsin and now Illinois.
- 45:50Speaker 4: For Nebraska, the Miami Hurricanes. You go back with that
- 45:53Speaker 4: nineteen eighty four Orange Bowl of failed two point conversion,
- 45:56Speaker 4: Miami winning its first national title for Northwestern keish On
- 46:00Speaker 4: Johnson when he was playing there for USC and they
- 46:04Speaker 4: beat them in the Rose Bowl. For Ohio State, it
- 46:07Speaker 4: was Jim Harball because they had four consecutive victories of
- 46:10Speaker 4: Ohio State before they were finally be able to break through.
- 46:13Speaker 5: For Oregon at USC.
- 46:14Speaker 4: For Penn State, the national poll voters when they didn't
- 46:18Speaker 4: win the national title sixty eight, sixty nine, and eighty
- 46:20Speaker 4: two and they went undefeated, finished number two every time,
- 46:23Speaker 4: I mean day right now. In sixty nine, they could
- 46:26Speaker 4: have put that in their own hands. Texas was number one.
- 46:29Speaker 4: Penn State was invited to play him in the Cotton
- 46:31Speaker 4: Bowl and they turned it down and went to the
- 46:33Speaker 4: Orange Bowl. They could have settled it on the field.
- 46:36Speaker 4: They didn't do it, though. For Purdue it was Scott Starks,
- 46:41Speaker 4: who was the quarterback for Wisconsin who came back and
- 46:47Speaker 4: beating them when they had national title hopes. And for
- 46:50Speaker 4: Rutgers it was sa Kwan Barkley who against Penn State
- 46:54Speaker 4: had a greatment. So anyway, there's some great For UCLA,
- 46:58Speaker 4: it was Pete Carroll USC the NCAAA because of probation
- 47:01Speaker 4: and things like that. Those were a couple of the
- 47:03Speaker 4: yellow ones there so an interesting read there from ESPN.
- 47:07Speaker 4: All right, coming up, we're gonna hear from long worn
- 47:08Speaker 4: football players when we continue here on Sports Radio AM
- 47:11Speaker 4: thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. I love
- 47:24Speaker 4: this song, but I guess clap for the Wolfman. Do
- 47:28Speaker 4: you know what this song is about?
- 47:30Speaker 2: No clue?
- 47:32Speaker 5: All right, you heard that voice right there.
- 47:34Speaker 7: You're familiar with.
- 47:35Speaker 4: The legendary DJ Wolfman Jack later to the Midnight Special
- 47:39Speaker 4: TV show. But he's famous DJ in l a and
- 47:42Speaker 4: on the West Coast and before they was on what
- 47:45Speaker 4: was called the x x t RF in Tijuanas that
- 47:49Speaker 4: had one hundred thousand wat am an blow all across
- 47:52Speaker 4: from people.
- 47:53Speaker 5: Got to hear him everything.
- 47:54Speaker 4: And this song is about how a guy is trying
- 47:58Speaker 4: to romance a young woman and she's more interested in
- 48:03Speaker 4: listening to Wolfman Jack play tunes, and uh.
- 48:09Speaker 5: You'll hear it.
- 48:10Speaker 4: They got Wolfman Jack actually contribute here, right, you're gonna
- 48:16Speaker 4: hear it right here.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Listen to him right here.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Oh you know him, she would pick. So let me
- 48:24Speaker 2: get something straight.
- 48:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you've got a Canadian group singing about an American DJ,
- 48:32Speaker 6: and we got fames in Mexico.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Yeah, that's it.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a history for you.
- 48:36Speaker 5: Here's another great line from the right here, I believe.
- 48:42Speaker 8: About good fans.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Everybody talk about the Wolfman's pampatus of love so clad
- 48:48Speaker 4: for the Wolfman.
- 48:49Speaker 5: Yeah, is one of one of my favorites as well.
- 48:52Speaker 4: All right, let's uh, let's hear from and again we're
- 48:55Speaker 4: doing this hearing from the Guess Who and hearing from
- 48:59Speaker 4: uh some beat songs since they'll be in concert the
- 49:03Speaker 4: Guess Who on Sunday and Randy Backman of course on
- 49:07Speaker 4: the ground floor of Bto after being with Burton Cummings
- 49:09Speaker 4: and the Guess Who when they're performing on Sunday evening
- 49:12Speaker 4: in for or all right, back to hearing from the
- 49:15Speaker 4: log Ornsjla McDonald the log horn safety, I don't know.
- 49:21Speaker 4: I don't know, and it's okay to identify who it
- 49:24Speaker 4: is if you know, Jake, I don't know who's asking
- 49:26Speaker 4: the questions about the five star characters.
- 49:29Speaker 2: This time either, Sorry, yeah, but.
- 49:30Speaker 4: But somebody's asking that because somebody is doing a piece.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Whenever more than one student athlete gets the exact same
- 49:38Speaker 4: question and the specificity of this, you know they're working
- 49:43Speaker 4: on a piece for they're either for a newspaper piece
- 49:46Speaker 4: or a fan site piece. None, there's anything wrong with it.
- 49:50Speaker 4: It's just that's if you're hearing with there's somebody else
- 49:52Speaker 4: being asked about five star career.
- 49:54Speaker 5: Here here's somebody else being nothing wrong with it.
- 49:56Speaker 4: It just means you can take that as a sign
- 49:58Speaker 4: that somebody's working on a piece on the team having
- 50:01Speaker 4: five star character. And we heard already heard some of that.
- 50:04Speaker 4: But here's Jeli McDonald being asked about it.
- 50:08Speaker 10: Like this offseason, we had team events, you know, we
- 50:11Speaker 10: went to we did pickleball, you know, just bonding with
- 50:14Speaker 10: each other.
- 50:15Speaker 8: We went like we did like.
- 50:17Speaker 10: Other things such as you know, we would like give
- 50:21Speaker 10: with each other as a position group and go eat
- 50:23Speaker 10: dinner or lunch or something like that. So just finding
- 50:26Speaker 10: a way to stay connected, you know, on and off
- 50:28Speaker 10: the field.
- 50:29Speaker 2: So just a brother hood. Wait a minute, he mentioned pickleball.
- 50:32Speaker 4: Uh, So you know what's gonna happen next, somebody's gonna
- 50:34Speaker 4: ask who's the best and who's the worst when it
- 50:36Speaker 4: comes to pick a ball on.
- 50:37Speaker 2: This team, best and the worst?
- 50:39Speaker 10: The best, I would say, Warren robertson surprisingly and the worst.
- 50:50Speaker 5: I feel like we we all cold.
- 50:52Speaker 10: It's just you know, it's always a better one, but
- 50:54Speaker 10: it's never just.
- 50:55Speaker 8: The worst one.
- 50:55Speaker 9: Were all good.
- 50:56Speaker 2: You ever played pickleball, Craig, I never have. I've seen
- 51:01Speaker 2: it played before. You've played it, haven't you? I have
- 51:04Speaker 2: you like it? Yeah? It's fun.
- 51:06Speaker 5: Yeah, it looks like it would be fun.
- 51:08Speaker 6: I don't love the uh you know it people, some
- 51:10Speaker 6: people wanted to take over for tennis, Ted, I find
- 51:13Speaker 6: tennis more fun.
- 51:14Speaker 4: Well, tennis has its own thing, but tennis is a
- 51:16Speaker 4: younger person's game, obviously with the amount of running, whereas
- 51:19Speaker 4: pick a ball has really ramped up its popularity for
- 51:23Speaker 4: older fans of the sport and certainly even senior citizens
- 51:26Speaker 4: to be a part of.
- 51:27Speaker 2: I'll tell you what, though, I've played pickleball before.
- 51:30Speaker 6: This is up in North Dakota where a younger coworker
- 51:35Speaker 6: and I go up against an older team.
- 51:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 51:38Speaker 2: They show up with the you.
- 51:38Speaker 6: Know, with the goggles right, trustin paddles, ready to go,
- 51:41Speaker 6: and we're thinking, okay, you know, not gonna be I'll
- 51:44Speaker 6: take it easy, and we've getten.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Get smoked, you get drilled. Wow, it's all about the positioning.
- 51:48Speaker 5: They know what they're doing.
- 51:51Speaker 8: Uh.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Jelani McDonald was also asked, Uh, you know, does he
- 51:57Speaker 4: feel because he isn't really mentioned that much, does he
- 52:00Speaker 4: feel a little bit underrated when folks, you know, were
- 52:05Speaker 4: making those kind of ratings looking at defensive backs.
- 52:07Speaker 10: You can say that, but I mean I don't really
- 52:10Speaker 10: I let everybody else, you know, determine that. I just
- 52:13Speaker 10: got to put my work in and I'm stay true
- 52:16Speaker 10: to my work.
- 52:17Speaker 7: So that's what that's gonna be.
- 52:18Speaker 4: Okay, all right, and that includes working with the other safeties,
- 52:22Speaker 4: the other ones who step up.
- 52:23Speaker 10: I was awesome having another big guy back to sis too.
- 52:26Speaker 10: You know, we all live tall, so having another big
- 52:28Speaker 10: guy back to being physical, you know, being vocal, stepping
- 52:32Speaker 10: into his new role on this on this team, and yeah,
- 52:36Speaker 10: he's his adjustment has been smooth.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm also talking about Kobe Black baking that swing
- 52:40Speaker 4: over the safety as well. Now, Ryan Nibblet, the special
- 52:44Speaker 4: teams specialist, uh said yeah, it's all great about you know,
- 52:49Speaker 4: returning kicks and punts and all that kind of stuff.
- 52:51Speaker 4: But special teams on both when they are punting and
- 52:55Speaker 4: when they were fielding punts, punt returned as well as
- 52:58Speaker 4: punt coverage. The hortons of staying penalty free and Nibbleck
- 53:03Speaker 4: talked about the strat the coaching staff and Jeff Banks
- 53:07Speaker 4: and specific the special teams coach.
- 53:09Speaker 2: Addressing those penalties definitely.
- 53:11Speaker 8: Been talked about.
- 53:12Speaker 11: He even put up stats, so how many penities we had,
- 53:14Speaker 11: how many yards we had on them penalties, So just
- 53:17Speaker 11: overall seeing the numbers is.
- 53:19Speaker 8: A different perspective. So yeah, we talked about that a lot.
- 53:21Speaker 4: As explosive as Niblock was last year, he feels maybe
- 53:27Speaker 4: he's got a chance to improve over time his technique
- 53:32Speaker 4: just having more experience.
- 53:33Speaker 11: I mean, yeah, it's definitely because as a young guy,
- 53:36Speaker 11: you know, you're trying to showcase your disability, so you're
- 53:38Speaker 11: trying to get extra aggressively ultimately allows penities and stuff
- 53:42Speaker 11: like that. But like when you're older, you're a lot
- 53:45Speaker 11: more of your technique and your coaching.
- 53:46Speaker 4: So yeah, all right, we've heard about coach Muschamp. We
- 53:50Speaker 4: know about coach Banks. Who's the most intense coach that
- 53:53Speaker 4: he feels is the most intense on this team.
- 53:56Speaker 11: I say Banks. I definitely say Banks, just because of
- 53:59Speaker 11: the fact that he don't he don't know how to
- 54:00Speaker 11: lure his voice.
- 54:02Speaker 7: He's a screamer. He's a screaming even.
- 54:04Speaker 11: When he loses his voice, hes gonna try to scream
- 54:06Speaker 11: it out. So yeah, Banks definitely.
- 54:08Speaker 5: Starks loud and continues loud.
- 54:11Speaker 4: Uh is there any pressure for Nibblet to match what
- 54:15Speaker 4: he did as a punt and kick returner of last year.
- 54:17Speaker 11: I wouldn't say so. I don't really look too much
- 54:20Speaker 11: in today. I try to be present in today, Tom.
- 54:23Speaker 11: I try to focus on today, make today my most
- 54:25Speaker 11: important day.
- 54:26Speaker 8: So yeah, that's how I try to take it in.
- 54:28Speaker 2: So are there any specific goals for Nibblet?
- 54:31Speaker 8: I mean my goals just beat a business that I
- 54:33Speaker 8: could be sir.
- 54:35Speaker 5: Back to that penalty thing.
- 54:36Speaker 4: You know sometimes you know you could have a big
- 54:38Speaker 4: punt return, it's called back because of a blocking the
- 54:41Speaker 4: back or a hold, and he was asked does he
- 54:43Speaker 4: have to handle the frustrations that come about if you
- 54:46Speaker 4: have a big return nullified by a penalty.
- 54:48Speaker 11: I mean, of course I'll say something because at the
- 54:50Speaker 11: end of the day's a team sport. They I feel
- 54:52Speaker 11: like you need to be you need to hurt, you
- 54:54Speaker 11: need to hear the real but also ultimately don't take
- 54:57Speaker 11: offense because I know, hey, let's get it back another time,
- 54:59Speaker 11: Like I I want to put down on my teammate
- 55:01Speaker 11: just to have to do it again, and like he
- 55:03Speaker 11: down in his head.
- 55:04Speaker 8: So yeah, I just try to look them up.
- 55:06Speaker 4: Here's another thing too, about penalties, and I often say
- 55:08Speaker 4: this on broadcast. If you have a penalty a block
- 55:13Speaker 4: in the back or a hold that happens on a
- 55:17Speaker 4: pump return, and the pump return happens to go for
- 55:21Speaker 4: a big gainer.
- 55:21Speaker 5: Seventy yard touchdown, fifty yards whatever.
- 55:25Speaker 4: I don't know if I want to say more often
- 55:26Speaker 4: than not, but quite often, the reason the pump return
- 55:31Speaker 4: went for fifty sixty seventy yards was because of the penalty.
- 55:35Speaker 4: So if the penalty had not incurred, there's a decent
- 55:40Speaker 4: chance that that return might not have gone certainly not
- 55:43Speaker 4: for the distance that it went, and may not have
- 55:45Speaker 4: been much of a return at all. And so that's
- 55:48Speaker 4: something that special teams coaches point out as well. For Niblett,
- 55:53Speaker 4: he's kind of a character. Are there some bigger characters
- 55:56Speaker 4: on this team?
- 55:57Speaker 11: Oh man, the whole room is a character. Oh Like,
- 56:00Speaker 11: especially relief release is the character. But the whole room
- 56:03Speaker 11: we left and joke all day. So I mean, like,
- 56:05Speaker 11: like he said, like the ultimately bring the team together, though,
- 56:08Speaker 11: so yeah, what's really really just say whatever's on his mind,
- 56:12Speaker 11: Just say whatever come to he.
- 56:13Speaker 4: Okay, he's talking about Releak Brown the Arizona straight transfer,
- 56:17Speaker 4: which gets us into the running back thing because remember Nibblett,
- 56:21Speaker 4: for all of his kick returning and punk returning all that,
- 56:24Speaker 4: he is by position a running back, and he did
- 56:26Speaker 4: carry the ball some last year, and they did throw
- 56:28Speaker 4: the ball to him out of the backfield. So now
- 56:30Speaker 4: with Relik Brown and Hollywood smothers coming in to help
- 56:34Speaker 4: bolster the backfield, Michael Terry is back there as well.
- 56:37Speaker 5: What's his impressions of this running back run?
- 56:39Speaker 11: Especially because pretty much all I guys knew we were young,
- 56:42Speaker 11: Like I haven't played the sport position in real will,
- 56:44Speaker 11: so I feel like it's coming together will actually, so
- 56:47Speaker 11: like we all talk to each other, we all give
- 56:49Speaker 11: each other feedback. So just the just the being able
- 56:52Speaker 11: to give each other feedback it helps a lot. So
- 56:53Speaker 11: we can I can tell him what he's doing wrong
- 56:55Speaker 11: on the play, he can tell me what's wrong, and
- 56:56Speaker 11: we can just opiately just put it together, all right?
- 56:58Speaker 4: Uh, he mentioned Relik Brown, how would he describe the
- 57:01Speaker 4: former Arizona State Sun Devil's running style, Releak is a
- 57:04Speaker 4: little different.
- 57:05Speaker 11: You know, he's short for run long, So it's like
- 57:07Speaker 11: it's crazy. He very fast, very quick, agile and releak.
- 57:11Speaker 11: You know, he's very fast. But I can't say, I mean,
- 57:16Speaker 11: I really, Hollywood, I can't say.
- 57:17Speaker 8: He's very smart.
- 57:18Speaker 11: Also, so him being very smart in the backfield just
- 57:21Speaker 11: allowed him to just see the feel more clear than
- 57:24Speaker 11: you know what I'm saying.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Uh.
- 57:26Speaker 4: Also, uh, the uh he was talking about Releak. Brown
- 57:30Speaker 4: Leak also is a nickname. The nickname is band Aid.
- 57:34Speaker 11: Why band aid for one, that's his Instagram name, band Aid.
- 57:38Speaker 11: And he liked to call it band aid because like
- 57:41Speaker 11: the bluestrip one hundred dollars.
- 57:42Speaker 8: So that's what he told That's what he told us.
- 57:47Speaker 2: Okay, all right, that's another way to look at that.
- 57:49Speaker 2: He mentioned Hollywood Smothers as well.
- 57:51Speaker 4: How about the personalities of those two transfer running backs
- 57:55Speaker 4: relate Brown coming in from Arizona state, Hollywood Smothers coming
- 57:58Speaker 4: in from North Carolina state.
- 58:00Speaker 8: It's goofy. Oh, I mean, this is all of us.
- 58:02Speaker 8: We're just goofy.
- 58:03Speaker 11: We see each other, we just automatically laugh without saying nothing.
- 58:05Speaker 11: Just like that moments was like that.
- 58:08Speaker 4: Okay, all right, that's a way to describe it as right,
- 58:11Speaker 4: here's that five star character question we're talking about, and
- 58:13Speaker 4: it was put as well, uh, to nibble it as well,
- 58:18Speaker 4: about this five star character thing to the team.
- 58:20Speaker 11: I mean five star character, it's like a multitude of things,
- 58:24Speaker 11: like it's culture, how you in the building, out the building,
- 58:27Speaker 11: how you greet and treat others. So just overall just
- 58:30Speaker 11: being being positive and just carrying yourself.
- 58:34Speaker 5: The right way.
- 58:34Speaker 4: All right, So you got all these younger players coming in.
- 58:36Speaker 4: What's the most important thing for younger players to learn
- 58:40Speaker 4: starting from the very start of fall camp.
- 58:42Speaker 8: Just leave high school where it's at.
- 58:45Speaker 11: This is a different ball game. Just one thing. I
- 58:50Speaker 11: one thing I coach would like to say. In order
- 58:52Speaker 11: to have a great leader, you got you gotta be
- 58:53Speaker 11: a great follower. So just ultimately just bond into the program,
- 58:57Speaker 11: is what I say.
- 58:58Speaker 8: Is the biggest team.
- 58:59Speaker 4: Well, look, we'll tell you that. And that also helped
- 59:02Speaker 4: me in his kick and pump return game as well.
- 59:05Speaker 4: Also what helps is working on your speed.
- 59:07Speaker 11: I mean most definitely I work on my speed a lot,
- 59:10Speaker 11: my get off, my agile, my cut, So I feel
- 59:13Speaker 11: like that's gonna play a lot, especially pun return and
- 59:15Speaker 11: stuff like that, running the ball when releaking stuff go down.
- 59:19Speaker 2: So yeah, all right, Also other kick returning standouts.
- 59:23Speaker 11: Jermaine Bishop looks really good as a freshman coming in,
- 59:26Speaker 11: you know in Hollywood. Daty McCutcheon was behind me last year.
- 59:29Speaker 11: So all three of us are going back there working
- 59:32Speaker 11: every day after practice.
- 59:34Speaker 4: So yeah, and then finally the news came down that
- 59:39Speaker 4: Cole Hudson has been cleared and it has in fact
- 59:41Speaker 4: rejoining the log Worns along that offensive front. So he
- 59:46Speaker 4: was asked, even as it was eminent that it looks
- 59:48Speaker 4: like it was gonna happen, what it would mean to
- 59:50Speaker 4: have Hudson back on the field.
- 59:51Speaker 11: I mean, it was me and a lot to the program,
- 59:54Speaker 11: just more depth on an old line, just overall just
- 59:57Speaker 11: having more because you know, sometimes the line get a
- 59:59Speaker 11: little tired, so just having more dips so so we
- 1:00:01Speaker 11: can just continue to be the best team that we
- 1:00:03Speaker 11: can be as a whole.
- 1:00:04Speaker 8: So that'll be great.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: And he is back, and where he fits in the
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: only time will tell. As he ramps back into the routine.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: All right, we're gonna hear from hero Canoe coming up
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: as we continue here, and uh.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: We also have a trivia question coming up.
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: We'll do that when we continue on thirteen under the
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: zone shuts on, I guess who Friday Albert Flasher the
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: name of this too by the guests.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: Certain Cummings you said as the lead singer.
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it is great.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: He did a heck of a job out of them,
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: so I'm looking forward to seeing them on Sunday nights.
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: Let's hear from the Longhorns senior defensive lineman, the fifth
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: year senior Hero Canoe is asked just how good is
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: this Texas defense or how good might they become?
- 1:00:59Speaker 7: It's good.
- 1:00:59Speaker 12: It's it's really good, and the best thing about it
- 1:01:01Speaker 12: is it's deep. We got a lot of guys that
- 1:01:04Speaker 12: can play. A lot of guys that came in. Knew
- 1:01:06Speaker 12: in addition that it'd be a freshman, that'd be transfers.
- 1:01:09Speaker 12: That are all he came They all came into one
- 1:01:11Speaker 12: of the players.
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: So yeah.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: One of those guys that he says can really make
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: an impact is Josiah Sharma, who was a red shirt
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: freshman and works at that nose tackle spot as well.
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: Hey, that's a big move, that's what we say.
- 1:01:25Speaker 12: We call him the dancing bear because this big, but
- 1:01:28Speaker 12: you got such a feticism, it's it's unbelievable.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: How big is He's six four and three hundred and
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: fifty six pounds coming into camp. So what's his initial
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: reaction to seeing Josiah Sharma?
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: What about you, guy, big guy? What's your initial impression?
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: I was like, dang.
- 1:01:44Speaker 12: I remember playing Arkansas. I was like, dang, that's a
- 1:01:47Speaker 12: big dude. I'm using obviously the nice words.
- 1:01:50Speaker 9: I'm like, dang.
- 1:01:50Speaker 7: Okay.
- 1:01:52Speaker 12: I was like, this might be the biggest dude I've
- 1:01:54Speaker 12: ever seen. I play against some big dudes, like just
- 1:01:56Speaker 12: in high school guys like Maximus Games. He was like
- 1:02:00Speaker 12: he went viral one time, you know, four hundred pounds
- 1:02:02Speaker 12: six say sixty seven or something like that. I'm like, dang,
- 1:02:05Speaker 12: I'm part with that. So he's one of the biggest
- 1:02:08Speaker 12: guys I've seen. But he had really sweet feet. He's
- 1:02:10Speaker 12: fast especially for his size, Like he can move.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: Okay, it's good to know there.
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: All right, it's time for a trivia question for a
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, and the two
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: o'clock Hour gave it away to the random second person
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: to dial in, and then one more coming up next
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: hour on a random person accessing us via the talkback feature.
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: But we're doing one trivia question.
- 1:02:34Speaker 4: When we were talking about the arch enemies piece in
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: on the ESPN article there they listed California's arch enemy
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: as being Mac Brown. This goes back to two thousand
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: and four and Mac Brown was, you know, obviously lobbying
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: for Texas to be in the Rose Bowl and Cal
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: did its own lobbying and Texas got in the Rose
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: Bowl instead of caw. Cal was quarterback by Aaron Rodgers,
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: and he was very critical about it that that sort
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: of thing. But the inescapable reality is is that both
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Texas and California had a common opponent that year and
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: the Loghorns throttled that opponent and California lost to that
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: opponent in the Holiday Bowl after not getting to go
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: to the Rose Bowl. First correct answer, Who was that
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: common opponent for Texas and col back in two thousand
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: and four. It was the difference in Texas going to
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: the Rose Bowl and Cal going to the Holiday Bowl.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: We'll be back to wrap up our number two.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: I'm thirteen under the Zone, third and final hours of
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: Zone and as we mentioned today, paying tribute to the
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: guests who and also Blackman Turner over Drive. They're appearing
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: in Forworths on Sunday night, and Yeah, I'm gonna be there.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: This is one of my favorites. This really what's a
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: two part song. It's almost like if you hear Billy
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: Joel's scenes from an Italian restaurant, which is, as he says,
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: bits and pieces of different songs that are knitted together.
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: Same thing.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: Kind of also with the backside of the Abbey Road
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: album for the Beatles, where it's just pieces of songs.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Say a minute and this be goes. You're about to
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: hear the transition into the second part of this. What
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: do you think of the guests who's you weren't that
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: familiar with guests who going into today?
- 1:04:57Speaker 5: Were you?
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: No, not all that much.
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: I've been enjoying this so far, this one in particular.
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: This is uh if if And then when it transitions
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: here into the second part of the song, momentarily you'll
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: hear the other thing. But of course, two great artists,
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman.
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: Yeah I didn't come in today, only knew American woman
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: and now that's not even in my top five anymore.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a good one, and that's what we let
- 1:05:25Speaker 4: all to three o'clock hour. But see, now this sounds
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: like it's going to be the exact same.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: Song, and it's not.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: You're gonna hear it's a completely different set of lyrics.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: And this is that this particular right is new mother Nature.
- 1:05:43Speaker 8: And and then.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: The best part of this song is coming up here
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: in a moment when they combine the two pieces together.
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: I'll give you another example Paul McCartney's Silly Love songs
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: where they do the round and they start bringing it
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: so it starts now you're gonna hear it coming, you know,
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: up on this and and that's why I said it
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: between you know, uh guess who and and Bachman Turner Overdrive,
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: which is Randy Bachman moved us and when he moved
- 1:06:17Speaker 4: on and did bt O after the breakup of guests,
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: who's the two get back together? And so they're doing
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: this tour and you know how I am and and
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: Lendu's like this too. We're trying to see as many
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: of these old school, old style rock and roll stars
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: before they get you know, too old for wanting to
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: do it. And these guys are in their eighties but
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: they're still they're still cranking it out and.
- 1:06:43Speaker 5: Uh and uh.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: So this is what's going to be on on Sunday
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: night in Fort Worth. So anyway, let's hear some more
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: Longhorn sound and then coming up, we're gonna visit with
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: Neil Price, the play by play voice of the Mississippi
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: State Bulldogs. As we continue with our SEC previews, also
- 1:07:06Speaker 4: will give away another copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football maxim.
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: And we've heard some from Jelani McDonald, so we want
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: to hear some more from him. Julani is one of
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: those guys who's made progress, took some definite steps forward. Now,
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: what they're asking of him in addition to doing what
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: he does on the field and at the safety spot
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: and being versatile is the leadership thing. And so he
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: was asked about this, what about his leadership?
- 1:07:31Speaker 10: You have to understand, Like, for me, I make it
- 1:07:36Speaker 10: as if I don't say nothing, they don't know, So
- 1:07:40Speaker 10: I just assume they don't know.
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: So that forces me to be on top of my game.
- 1:07:44Speaker 8: So that's it.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Yeah, all right, So if you are leading and you
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: are one of the elder statesmen as he is, then
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: you have to kind of help some of the younger guys,
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: he said. If they're not asking, they probably don't know.
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: And that includes the freshman.
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: Recap of them.
- 1:08:01Speaker 10: Just to keep a routine, man, stay hydrated, you know,
- 1:08:05Speaker 10: go to sleep on time. You know, watch a little
- 1:08:07Speaker 10: more film if you need to eat, because that's all.
- 1:08:09Speaker 10: That's what it comes down to. How much energy you
- 1:08:11Speaker 10: got it in back. If you ain't got no energy,
- 1:08:13Speaker 10: then you can't you can't you know, produce at this level.
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: Yeah, well, and that would includes the guy who just
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: enrolled reclassifying.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: That's John Merit at the third.
- 1:08:22Speaker 7: You can tell he's a very special guy.
- 1:08:25Speaker 10: He's very competitive, very competitive, he gets physical. He'll look
- 1:08:30Speaker 10: quiet right now, but you know that's how all of
- 1:08:31Speaker 10: us was coming in and as a freshman, so that's
- 1:08:34Speaker 10: that's the norm. But just being able to see him
- 1:08:37Speaker 10: get in there with the amount of time that he
- 1:08:40Speaker 10: did have to learn and get in there and just
- 1:08:42Speaker 10: you know, have the confidence to run the things that
- 1:08:45Speaker 10: we run, the plays and coverages that we run, like
- 1:08:47Speaker 10: with the most confidence.
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: Okay, when Will mush Champ was here the first time,
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: is defensive coordinator.
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: Quite often you'd hear a reference to what would be
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: called a must Champ moment when, in other words, when
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: he's either encouraging you or he's kind of getting on
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: you a little bit.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Some days you're the marker, some days you're the whiteboard.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: That's the one, that's the one and so.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: And as a result of that, Jelani McDonald's asked if
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: he has encountered a much Champ moment yet.
- 1:09:16Speaker 10: I can't say I've had a much Time moment, like
- 1:09:20Speaker 10: a real Muchchamp moment, but I've experienced it, and it's
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: like yiky mad.
- 1:09:25Speaker 7: You know, he'll correct you this, that and third.
- 1:09:28Speaker 10: But then guess what when you make that play right
- 1:09:30Speaker 10: there smiling?
- 1:09:31Speaker 7: Is he the first one? See he?
- 1:09:33Speaker 8: You know all that?
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: All that?
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: Yeah, coach Herman, Okay, all right, So that's good to hear.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: The guys spent a lot of time around one another,
- 1:09:41Speaker 4: both offensive and the defense. We've heard about the offensive
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: guys being down in New Orleans with ars. Defensive guys
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: spend a lot of time around as well, And so
- 1:09:49Speaker 4: Jelani was asked, what about the effect of this off
- 1:09:52Speaker 4: season bonding going into training camp.
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: I have you know, when he gets hot.
- 1:09:59Speaker 10: When when we get out the building, you know, you
- 1:10:01Speaker 10: see usually see people start getting on the knees, start
- 1:10:04Speaker 10: getting down, start getting you know, in their own space.
- 1:10:07Speaker 10: But since we've you know, been together, I've seen you know,
- 1:10:12Speaker 10: multiple people go pick somebody up, like you you could
- 1:10:14Speaker 10: lean on me.
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: Here, get some water.
- 1:10:16Speaker 10: I run fifteen yards that way just to bring you
- 1:10:18Speaker 10: water back this way. So this is you know, just
- 1:10:20Speaker 10: being able to put the team first, man, because at
- 1:10:24Speaker 10: the end of the day, this is for the team.
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: This is just not for us.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: So and you heard him talking about, you know, going
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: to get water for other teammates and helping out all
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: this kind of stuff. That also when you are working
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: in this heat one hundred degree heat or whatever, ninety
- 1:10:38Speaker 4: eight degrees. Like I said, I had a lot of
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: fun with this the other day when folks were talking about,
- 1:10:42Speaker 4: you know how hot it is, and I said, and
- 1:10:45Speaker 4: our meteorologists and I watch all of the local newscasts,
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: and all of them, to a man or woman all
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: sing the same things that it's very very hot. The
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: the you know, it's one hundred degrees might cool down
- 1:10:57Speaker 4: to ninety eight cool down. Can you really know, notice
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: that much of a difference between ninety eight and one hundred.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: Maybe you can't. Maybe you can on the practice field
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: as well. But whether you can or not, Jelani McDonald
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: will tell you that coach Tory Beckton's off season conditioning
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: program certainly pays dividends.
- 1:11:14Speaker 10: Here he ran us, so he ran us for one
- 1:11:17Speaker 10: and he ran us again. So just band in condition, man,
- 1:11:21Speaker 10: just we know we're in shape. We just put it
- 1:11:23Speaker 10: out though.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: All right there it is from Jelania McDonald. We're going
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: to hear some more coming up a little bit later
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: this hour. Ryan Nibblett kick returner, a specialist and also
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: a guy who catch the ball, can run the ball
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: out of the backfield, and an all purpose guy and
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: hero canoe the defensive lineman of returning as well for
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: one more season at the University of Texas. We'll hear
- 1:11:43Speaker 4: some more about that coming up here. It is again
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: one more random opportunity for you to win a copy
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Like I said, we're
- 1:11:54Speaker 4: alternating this, you know, by the random water of the
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: person checking in on the talkback microphone, mixed in with
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: a trivia question on the other hour, and that and
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: so Today was the day where we did two of
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: the randoms and one trivia.
- 1:12:14Speaker 5: We did the trivia last hour. So back to the random.
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Let's see be the lucky number seven, be the seventh
- 1:12:22Speaker 4: person to reach us via the talkback line. So you
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: download the iHeartRadio app, you search AM thirteen under the zone.
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: It'll come up there on your smartphone, and then you
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: press that little red button with a white microphone that's
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: the talkback microphone.
- 1:12:39Speaker 5: And all you have to do is say I want
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: the magazine. That's it.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: And if you're the seventh person in line to do that,
- 1:12:46Speaker 4: the luck of the draw, you'll win a copy of Dave.
- 1:12:48Speaker 5: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. Up next, we.
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: Continue our SEC previews and we'll visit with Neil Price,
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: the play by play voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs,
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: when we continue on this Friday on sports Radio AM
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app here on
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: a Friday afternoon. So I took this from the selfish
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: perspective here because I'm going to go see the guests
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: who and also with Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman, the
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: great Randy Backman from Bachman Turner Overdriving This was one
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: of their hits looking out for number one, which is
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: the way it has to go in the Southeastern Conference.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: So we continue our SEC football previews as everybody's trying to,
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: as Randy Bockman said, climb to the top. And that
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: goes for the Mississippi State Bulldogs as well. Jeff Levi's
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: ball club getting ready to start his third season there
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: in Starkville, and as always, so pleased to be joined
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: by the play by play voice of the Mississippi State
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Bulldogs on the hotline with us is Neil Price. I
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: appreciate the time we've talked about this when we've done
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: yacht rock stuff before, when I've had you on before, Neil,
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: and so I know you have an appreciation for also
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: the classic rock side of things.
- 1:14:00Speaker 9: Oh yeah, BTO in particular taking Care of Business is
- 1:14:04Speaker 9: obviously one of the great all time rock songs, and
- 1:14:08Speaker 9: in this part of the world, when you hear that,
- 1:14:10Speaker 9: you think of bt O, and you also think of
- 1:14:13Speaker 9: Elvis Presley because Elvis was famous for the TCB band,
- 1:14:16Speaker 9: you know, So it's yeah, I think when I was
- 1:14:20Speaker 9: listening to Bob coming back, it felt like I needed
- 1:14:22Speaker 9: a Martinez or something kind of deal, like you know,
- 1:14:25Speaker 9: we're just gonna sit back at chill for a little while.
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: Yeah, that was kind of that's the kind of clubby
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: side of Randy Bachman there. Uh uh. And that was
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: a bt O song, but it's funny you uh uh.
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: I'm glad you did that. The a little spoiler alert
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: sneak preview.
- 1:14:41Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: Taking care of business is what we have a little
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: bit later on in the program. But as we take
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: care of the business at hand. I saw coach Levy
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: at SEC Football media days and uh and you I've told.
- 1:14:55Speaker 5: You this before. You know this. Uh.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: I've known him for a long time, even before he
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: was assistant coach. I knew Hi when he was younger
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: because I knew his dad was such a successful high
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: school football coach in Texas as well. And we hear
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: that you know coaches, certainly it takes him at least
- 1:15:11Speaker 4: a couple of years to start to ramp things up,
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: and coming off getting to a ball game last year
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: and being able to do that and trying to improve
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: on the five and eight mark. Do you since get
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: the sense that not only for coach Levy but also
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: for the Bulldogs there is more of an implanted comfort
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: level now as they get ready to launch season number three.
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: I think in terms of the expectation from the players, yes,
- 1:15:41Speaker 9: I think the thing that is kind of always in
- 1:15:44Speaker 9: flux is that the staff changes. Now, that's not necessarily
- 1:15:48Speaker 9: a bad thing. Some of that needed to happen, and
- 1:15:51Speaker 9: I give Jeff a lot of credit because when you're young,
- 1:15:55Speaker 9: sometimes you come into your first dad coaching job and
- 1:15:58Speaker 9: it's natural to want to put your stamp on something.
- 1:16:01Speaker 9: You've got a plan. You want to show the world
- 1:16:04Speaker 9: that the people who have trusted you to run a
- 1:16:07Speaker 9: program have made the right decision, and you've got one
- 1:16:10Speaker 9: confidence in what you're going to do. And I think
- 1:16:13Speaker 9: Jeff had that when he came here two years ago
- 1:16:15Speaker 9: to plus, but I think he realized that he's got
- 1:16:19Speaker 9: to adapt and evolve, and some of that is you
- 1:16:23Speaker 9: have to bring in new people on your staff to
- 1:16:25Speaker 9: be able to make that happen. And and to his credit,
- 1:16:27Speaker 9: he's been willing to do that. So vac Arnett, who
- 1:16:30Speaker 9: was the defensive coordinator here for Mike Leach and then
- 1:16:34Speaker 9: was the interim head coach for a season after coach
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: is passing, is back as the defensive coordinator. Matt Brock
- 1:16:40Speaker 9: is back with him, who was his co DC and
- 1:16:43Speaker 9: was a linebackers coach here with coach Leech. I think
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: those two guys are great additions and will help that
- 1:16:49Speaker 9: side of the ball. And then he brought a guy
- 1:16:51Speaker 9: like Philip Montgomery in, who has been a successful college
- 1:16:55Speaker 9: head coach, a guy that he knows, that he trusts,
- 1:16:58Speaker 9: that gives him another set of eyes offensively that can
- 1:17:02Speaker 9: help him, you know, continue to build his scheme, try
- 1:17:06Speaker 9: to evolve in that way, and just give him some
- 1:17:09Speaker 9: experience that maybe he doesn't have. I think for somebody
- 1:17:13Speaker 9: to be willing to go out and make those kind
- 1:17:15Speaker 9: of moves and surround himself with the best people possible
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: says a lot about where Jeff is growing as a
- 1:17:21Speaker 9: head coach too well.
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: And I see a commonality here what you just talked about.
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: Jeff of course being an outstanding play caller, but yet
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: willing to have another, as you said, set of eyes
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: on the field, and coach Montgomery stark the same way,
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: calling his own plays, but having enough offensive viewpoint from
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: others there, whether they're analysts or assistant coaches.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Things like that.
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: I think coaches are kind of getting to that point
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: where they realize Hey, I could still call a place.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: I just don't have to be the only set of
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: eyes on the field.
- 1:17:50Speaker 9: Here, right. And I think if you're going to do that,
- 1:17:54Speaker 9: and there are a lot of guys in college football
- 1:17:57Speaker 9: today who are the head coach slash play caller, I
- 1:18:00Speaker 9: think if you're going to do that, you need somebody
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: to kind of look at the big picture so that
- 1:18:07Speaker 9: you can focus on what your next play needs to be,
- 1:18:12Speaker 9: or you can focus on making an adjustment second drive,
- 1:18:16Speaker 9: third drive as you begin to go deeper into the
- 1:18:18Speaker 9: game when you're trying to look at a big picture,
- 1:18:21Speaker 9: plus be that guy when your offense is on the field.
- 1:18:25Speaker 9: I don't know how guys do it. I don't. I
- 1:18:27Speaker 9: think it's a lot to try to balance it one time.
- 1:18:29Speaker 9: So yeah, I mean people wonder why football staffs are
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: so big. Sure, the number of players is enormous, but
- 1:18:36Speaker 9: I just think you've got guys who have to specialize
- 1:18:40Speaker 9: so much within the game that you need those extra
- 1:18:43Speaker 9: eyes and ears out there to help you be successful.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: No doubt about it.
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: Would you say it also not only on the offenses,
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: because I know how fans think about this.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: A lot of media does as well.
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: When they think Okay, the offensive play calling, maybe there's
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: some help there, whether somebody else is calling the plagues
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: or somebody. But on the defensive side, you mentioned Zach
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: Arnett returning, and then you've got Matt Brock who was
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: successful as a DC at Yukon as well. Having more
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: than one set of eyes in the coordinating role on
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: both sides of the ball would seem to be a benefit,
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: and it looks like the Bulldogs are trying to capitalize
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: there as well.
- 1:19:17Speaker 9: Yeah, and I think two guys who have worked together before,
- 1:19:21Speaker 9: who understand each other in Zach Barnett and Matt Brock,
- 1:19:24Speaker 9: I think that piece is important too, because they know
- 1:19:28Speaker 9: how one another think when it comes to a lot
- 1:19:31Speaker 9: of things when you're talking about coaching defense. So I
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: think that piece is huge. And I don't know how
- 1:19:38Speaker 9: Jeff Levy will be compared to how Mike Leach was
- 1:19:42Speaker 9: with Zach Barnett and Matt Brock. But when coach Leach
- 1:19:45Speaker 9: was here, he basically told coach Barnett, look, I'm not
- 1:19:49Speaker 9: going to tell you how to do your job. My
- 1:19:51Speaker 9: job is to go score points. Your job is to
- 1:19:53Speaker 9: stop the other team. Now, I'm not going to tell
- 1:19:55Speaker 9: you that I won't go for it on fourth and
- 1:19:57Speaker 9: twenty from my own eighteen, and we'll turn it over.
- 1:20:00Speaker 9: And I give you a pass because I've pinned you deep.
- 1:20:03Speaker 9: You still got to go find a way to stop him.
- 1:20:04Speaker 9: If I do that, that's on you. You know. I
- 1:20:07Speaker 9: don't know if Jeff's going to be that hands off.
- 1:20:09Speaker 9: I think at least early on he will be. But
- 1:20:12Speaker 9: Zach has made it very clear too that look, you know,
- 1:20:15Speaker 9: we'll call the plays, we'll get you in the best
- 1:20:18Speaker 9: position defensively we can. But if coach says this is
- 1:20:21Speaker 9: what he wants or this is his idea, it's his program,
- 1:20:24Speaker 9: that's what we're going to do. So I think they've
- 1:20:26Speaker 9: got a really clear understanding. But Zach and Matt Brock
- 1:20:30Speaker 9: fit the culture of this place, Craig about as well
- 1:20:34Speaker 9: as anyone. I mean, they they are blue collar, hardworking.
- 1:20:40Speaker 9: Both of them have earned everything that they've they've been
- 1:20:42Speaker 9: able to get in life, and I think that's something
- 1:20:45Speaker 9: that in this program has kind of always been the case.
- 1:20:48Speaker 9: You know, whether it's players, coaches, they've all had to
- 1:20:51Speaker 9: have that blue collar kind of edge to him. And
- 1:20:53Speaker 9: those two guys fit this place really really well.
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: Mississippi State play by play voice Neil Price joining us
- 1:20:58Speaker 4: here in our SEC previews here on sport Radio AM
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: thirteen hundred zon.
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: All right, let's jump to the players.
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: In a good place to start, always has at quarterback,
- 1:21:05Speaker 4: and I know the Blake shape and adventure when up
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: and down in the injuries were a big part of that.
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: But now is it safe to say this offense is
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: in the hands of Camaro Taylor?
- 1:21:17Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I think so. And you know, I'm not
- 1:21:20Speaker 9: trying to heap on too much with regard to expectation
- 1:21:24Speaker 9: on a guy who's a sophomore, but I think he
- 1:21:28Speaker 9: is a generational type talent. I do. They've had guys
- 1:21:34Speaker 9: play quarterback here in my ten years that have been
- 1:21:38Speaker 9: exceptional runners but have not been accurate passers. They've had
- 1:21:43Speaker 9: some guys that have been very accurate passers, but not
- 1:21:47Speaker 9: the most mobile when it comes to trying to extend
- 1:21:50Speaker 9: plays or get out of trouble. Camaro Taylor is a
- 1:21:53Speaker 9: guy who is an exceptional thrower who just happens to
- 1:21:58Speaker 9: be able to run at an elite level. And in
- 1:22:01Speaker 9: a small sample size last year, we saw him do
- 1:22:04Speaker 9: things that you just sit back and go wow. You know,
- 1:22:07Speaker 9: I mean weave his way through defenses, bring the team
- 1:22:09Speaker 9: back in spots and sec games where especially at Arkansas
- 1:22:13Speaker 9: where it wasn't looking great, look like State had lost
- 1:22:16Speaker 9: all the momentum and blake shape and got banged up,
- 1:22:18Speaker 9: and Tomrio goes in the game and suddenly takes him
- 1:22:20Speaker 9: down the field and scores and he's a true freshman
- 1:22:22Speaker 9: and you're going, wow, that's not common. I think the
- 1:22:26Speaker 9: key for his success though, is that they've got to
- 1:22:29Speaker 9: have an offensive line that's capable of protecting him. And
- 1:22:33Speaker 9: what we saw at times last year, especially on the
- 1:22:35Speaker 9: left side of that offensive line, was that it wasn't consistent.
- 1:22:39Speaker 9: So that's where they've got to take a big step.
- 1:22:42Speaker 9: Is that group's got to be better. Give him time
- 1:22:45Speaker 9: to make the throws, but also keep him up right
- 1:22:48Speaker 9: and give him a chance to extend plays and use
- 1:22:50Speaker 9: all that talent. He's got to give this team a chance.
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: Well, that's a great point, and we always talk about
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: the offensive line, you know, being that's important is a
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: guy like Cannon Boone, a guy who has to kind
- 1:23:03Speaker 4: of lead the charge there as well as some of
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: the younger guys there to step up and make sure
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: this whole line can keep Camrio Taylor upright.
- 1:23:11Speaker 9: Yeah, and I think Cannon to. I think Cannon did
- 1:23:14Speaker 9: a good job of trying to be the leader. A
- 1:23:16Speaker 9: year ago. They just had so many injuries and you know,
- 1:23:20Speaker 9: they had to revolve indoor. By the end of the year,
- 1:23:23Speaker 9: they're down to seven guys and you're bringing a defensive
- 1:23:26Speaker 9: guy over trying to plug some holes there with regards
- 1:23:28Speaker 9: to depth on that offensive line. So they need people
- 1:23:32Speaker 9: to be healthy, they need a good leader like Cannon Boom,
- 1:23:35Speaker 9: and they just need to be consistent do the very
- 1:23:37Speaker 9: basic things every day to because they've got great skill people.
- 1:23:42Speaker 9: But you can have the greatest skill players in the world.
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: Barry Sanders is the great exception. You know, he played
- 1:23:49Speaker 9: for bad teams you're in and you're out in the NFL,
- 1:23:51Speaker 9: yet somehow found a way to get his yards and
- 1:23:54Speaker 9: overcome bad situation. It's hard to do that in college football.
- 1:23:58Speaker 9: It just is. So you've got to have a group
- 1:24:00Speaker 9: of guys upfront that can be consistent and give those
- 1:24:02Speaker 9: skill guys a chance to be dynamic.
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: I want to ask you.
- 1:24:05Speaker 4: About a couple of offensive attorneys who I saw with
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: my own eyes in that epic game in startfield between
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: Texas and Mississippi State last year that overtime special and
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: that is Fluff Bothwell, who came in.
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: Last year and he made an impact in that game.
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: And then you have a veteran receiver in Anthony Evans
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: returning as well. And I remember those two guys specifically.
- 1:24:29Speaker 4: How important will those two guys be in terms of
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: being able to direct the offense to be very productive?
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Well?
- 1:24:37Speaker 9: Huge, because I think the ball is going to go
- 1:24:40Speaker 9: through both of them a lot. You know, so without
- 1:24:44Speaker 9: Brennan Thompson now who's moved on to the NFL, Anthony
- 1:24:47Speaker 9: Evans has to be your number one receiver and then
- 1:24:50Speaker 9: who emerges as that two guy behind him? Well, that's
- 1:24:53Speaker 9: what camp's for right now, and it's something that's going
- 1:24:56Speaker 9: to you know, play out, I think over the first
- 1:24:58Speaker 9: two or three games of the year, because you had
- 1:25:02Speaker 9: one A and one B with Brennan and Anthony Evans
- 1:25:05Speaker 9: last year. Now you know you got Anthony Evans, but
- 1:25:07Speaker 9: you don't really know who's going to step up and
- 1:25:10Speaker 9: be the guy with him or who that third guy
- 1:25:12Speaker 9: even is going to be with him there, So in
- 1:25:14Speaker 9: the passing game, he's going to be huge. Fluff is
- 1:25:17Speaker 9: a guy that. You know, I was even a little
- 1:25:20Speaker 9: surprised at how quick he was able to make the adjustment,
- 1:25:24Speaker 9: and that says a lot about his talent. It says
- 1:25:27Speaker 9: a lot about his maturity level that he was able
- 1:25:30Speaker 9: to come in and make the impact he did a
- 1:25:31Speaker 9: year ago, and he was splitting carries a lot of
- 1:25:34Speaker 9: the year, and I think this year he's kind of
- 1:25:36Speaker 9: your bell cow guy when it comes to carrying the ball,
- 1:25:39Speaker 9: so he's durable. What I like about him is that
- 1:25:43Speaker 9: he was not the fastest guy on the team a
- 1:25:46Speaker 9: year ago, but certainly he was capable of being a
- 1:25:49Speaker 9: physical runner with a fair amount of speed. And he's
- 1:25:53Speaker 9: a guy who catches the ball well out of the backfield,
- 1:25:55Speaker 9: so you can use him in a lot of different ways.
- 1:25:57Speaker 9: So in terms of the skilled people after Camrio Taylor, yeah,
- 1:26:01Speaker 9: you're right on it. Those two guys are going to
- 1:26:03Speaker 9: be the two impact guys on this team.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Neil probably has been said to stay played by playvoice
- 1:26:07Speaker 4: joined us for a few more minutes, let me jump
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: to the defense. And I know that with the influx
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: also of what he was doing with the coaching staff,
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: coach Lebby felt like he had to get some guys
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: in there. Some playmakers, didn't he especially on the defensive front.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: You've got some transfers coming in. How do you see
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: that shaking down right now?
- 1:26:25Speaker 9: Well, I think Camp's gonna have a lot to do
- 1:26:27Speaker 9: with it. The guy they got back that I think
- 1:26:30Speaker 9: can make the biggest impact, who is sort of still
- 1:26:33Speaker 9: a newcomer I guess, considering only played in two and
- 1:26:35Speaker 9: a half games a year ago, is Will Whitson. They
- 1:26:38Speaker 9: brought him over from Coastal Carolina before last season. He
- 1:26:41Speaker 9: was really good in a small sample size, but unfortunately
- 1:26:45Speaker 9: it's been a trend in his career. Places he's been,
- 1:26:49Speaker 9: he's had problems with injuries. You know, half a year's
- 1:26:51Speaker 9: kind of been what he's been able to do. They
- 1:26:53Speaker 9: hope they can get a whole year out of him
- 1:26:55Speaker 9: this year. And if you can take the numbers he
- 1:26:57Speaker 9: gave you in two and a half games last year,
- 1:27:00Speaker 9: app to eate those out over twelve, and you think
- 1:27:02Speaker 9: you've got a really good rush in there who can
- 1:27:04Speaker 9: be a difference maker. I think he's going to be
- 1:27:07Speaker 9: the guy who has to anchor him up front, and
- 1:27:10Speaker 9: then you need the rest of that group to come
- 1:27:12Speaker 9: along and create some pressure. Because I do think they've
- 1:27:14Speaker 9: got some good cover guys. Kelly Jones is going to
- 1:27:17Speaker 9: be an NFL cornerback one day. They like Jet Jefferson.
- 1:27:21Speaker 9: He's still a young guy who got banged up, only
- 1:27:23Speaker 9: played four games last year, but they like what he
- 1:27:26Speaker 9: can do as a cover guy in the secondary. So
- 1:27:29Speaker 9: I think they have some pieces to be good on defense,
- 1:27:32Speaker 9: and I think they'll be different defensively this year because Backgard,
- 1:27:35Speaker 9: that's a guy who comes off that Joe Lee, Duntree,
- 1:27:38Speaker 9: Rocky Long, not scared to get out there and blitz,
- 1:27:43Speaker 9: and he may send sticks, he may send eight, he
- 1:27:46Speaker 9: may send ten. If you just don't know, you know
- 1:27:48Speaker 9: when you come from all directions. So it's a fun
- 1:27:51Speaker 9: defense to be a part of. And they just got
- 1:27:53Speaker 9: to find guys who want to get out there and
- 1:27:54Speaker 9: play and give them a chance to build some step before.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: We get done. Neil, I want to ask you.
- 1:27:59Speaker 4: I always ask my fellow SEC play by play brethren
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: about their schedules coming up, and there's some that have
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: some easier rides early on.
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: Than some others.
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: I look at your schedule and say, Okay, there's definitely
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: a way to start at home a winnable non conference
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: game against ul Monroe, and then it looks like it's
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: quite a challenge having to travel up the Big Ten
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: country to play Minnesota, and it's back to back road
- 1:28:24Speaker 4: games because then the open SEC play the next week
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: against South Carolina on the road, and you've got South Carolina,
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: Missouri and then Alabama at home before you even get
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: a chance to catch breath. Then you've got road games
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: the Baton Rouge. You come here to Austin sandwiched around
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: a homecoming game against Oklahoma, and then obviously we'd never
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: want to leave out the Egg Bowl on Thanksgiving weekend.
- 1:28:44Speaker 4: How do you see the important elements of this schedule
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: playing out for the Bulldogs?
- 1:28:51Speaker 9: Well, first of all, what else is new? I mean,
- 1:28:53Speaker 9: that's just kind of yeah, that's just kind of the
- 1:28:56Speaker 9: way it is. I got to ask a similar question
- 1:28:58Speaker 9: the other day, and I said, remember, Mississippi State was
- 1:29:00Speaker 9: in the SEC West when divisions were still a thing,
- 1:29:04Speaker 9: and they always ended the year with some combination of
- 1:29:11Speaker 9: some combination of Auburn, Arkansas Ole. Miss Alabama was usually
- 1:29:17Speaker 9: in there somewhere in that final month too. So it's
- 1:29:21Speaker 9: just part of it. I mean, it just is and
- 1:29:23Speaker 9: and and the reality is you and I understand how
- 1:29:25Speaker 9: tough it is. The coaches understand how tough it is.
- 1:29:28Speaker 9: I think fans when they watch it, they just want
- 1:29:30Speaker 9: you to go win. They don't really care who you play.
- 1:29:33Speaker 9: I think they have to find a way to stay
- 1:29:35Speaker 9: healthy against that that that middle third of that schedule
- 1:29:38Speaker 9: that starts. I mean, you talked about the front end.
- 1:29:41Speaker 9: There's nothing easy about that. But when you're talking about
- 1:29:44Speaker 9: that stretch that starts with Alabama, I think there's a
- 1:29:46Speaker 9: bye week in there after that, and then you've got LSU.
- 1:29:52Speaker 9: Remind Texas and remind me of the fourth.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: One at LSU, then Oklahoma at home, then Alcohol Access
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: and then and Vanderbilt, Auburn, Tennessee Tech and then close
- 1:30:02Speaker 4: with the egg Ball.
- 1:30:04Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean there's that middle third. To me is
- 1:30:07Speaker 9: a murderer row. So you got to stay healthy because
- 1:30:12Speaker 9: we all know that's why depth is so important in
- 1:30:14Speaker 9: the SEC is you're going to hit stretches where guys
- 1:30:16Speaker 9: are going to get banged up because of the physical
- 1:30:18Speaker 9: demand of playing the schedule like that. So they just
- 1:30:22Speaker 9: got to find a way to stay healthy and get
- 1:30:24Speaker 9: through it, and you know, take advantage of your opportunities
- 1:30:27Speaker 9: at home as best as you can and go on
- 1:30:29Speaker 9: the road and see if you can scare somebody. I mean,
- 1:30:31Speaker 9: that's just kind of what you have to do in
- 1:30:32Speaker 9: this week.
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: He is the outstanding play by play voice of the
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Mississippi State Bulldogs and all around great guy, Neil Price.
- 1:30:39Speaker 5: Our friend, Neil.
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: I look forward to seeing you on Halloween, if not sooner,
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: and we'll look for a good one when you come
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: to town here at the end of October. Many thanks for
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: helping us out today.
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: I appreciate it.
- 1:30:51Speaker 9: Yeah, Craig, always good to talk to you.
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:30:53Speaker 4: That's Neil Price, play by play voice of the Mississippi
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: State Bulldogs. More coming up when we continue on Sports
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the radio app.
- 1:31:00Speaker 7: Followed Craig on social media at Horn.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: Voice try me on the program and like we said,
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: and by the way, thanks to Neil Price, play by
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: play voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, joining us as
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: we've continued.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: Our sec previews.
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: This, by the way, I like to say, continuing our
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: kind of a preview of sorts of the show that
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: I'll get up to see on Sunday. The guests who
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: and Backman Turner overdrive. This is laughing guess who with
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: Merton Cummings and Randy Backman and their great act and
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: Don Felder formerly of the Eagles, will be the opening
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: act for that on Sunday, So it'll be an awful
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: lot of fun off of that. All right, let's hear
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: some more longgorn football song. Ryan nibble of the Course,
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: established himself last year as a kick and pump returner extraordinaire.
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: Remember the two huge returns he had. We were just
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: talking with Neil Price a Mississippi State the two big
- 1:32:01Speaker 4: returns that Nibblet had in that overtime win against Mississippi State,
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: when it looked like the long orders are down and
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: might not be able to finish it off, he got
- 1:32:08Speaker 4: a big pump return for touchdown and got the ball back,
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: got it in overtime.
- 1:32:12Speaker 5: Nibble it a big, big part of it as well.
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: So what does it take to be a great pump returner?
- 1:32:20Speaker 11: Trusting trust, Trusting your teammates gonna make their block So
- 1:32:24Speaker 11: so I feel like trust is one of the biggest things.
- 1:32:26Speaker 7: Did you have a favorite one last year?
- 1:32:28Speaker 8: Favorite returns?
- 1:32:29Speaker 11: I feel like overall, I wouldn't say a favorite return,
- 1:32:32Speaker 11: but I say my favorite game is Kentucky.
- 1:32:34Speaker 4: Yeah, speaking that one as well. He's fast. We know
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: he's fast. You know what else is fast? We all
- 1:32:43Speaker 4: saw it last year, Arch Panning.
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: So do the two of them.
- 1:32:46Speaker 4: You know, we're got together as there's some speed training
- 1:32:49Speaker 4: that goes on with Ryan Nibblett and Arch Maanning.
- 1:32:52Speaker 11: Not speed training we don't do. We don't do spree
- 1:32:55Speaker 11: training together, but any other type of training. Yeah, we
- 1:32:57Speaker 11: I mean we talk about speed a lot. We talk
- 1:32:59Speaker 11: about it. We always clown each other who the slowest,
- 1:33:01Speaker 11: But like other than that, we don't talk.
- 1:33:03Speaker 8: I mean, we don't train to get speed.
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: Okay, last year he clearly took some people by surprise.
- 1:33:12Speaker 4: He realizes that even though we exploded on the scene
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: as a kick returner last year, he does not have
- 1:33:18Speaker 4: that element of surprise this time around.
- 1:33:20Speaker 11: I mean, like I said, I really don't look too
- 1:33:22Speaker 11: much into that. I try not to get too far
- 1:33:24Speaker 11: ahead into the future trying to look and outside noise.
- 1:33:28Speaker 11: I try to just stay focused on today and be prison.
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: Back to that speed thing. Who are the fastest guys
- 1:33:34Speaker 4: on the team?
- 1:33:36Speaker 8: Coin?
- 1:33:36Speaker 11: Of course, Coin's definitely fast, I'll say Wingo and Warren
- 1:33:43Speaker 11: Warren robson, how about you. I don't like to put
- 1:33:46Speaker 11: myself in there.
- 1:33:47Speaker 8: I'm very vil.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: Yeah he is, and he's very fast as well.
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: Everybody's asking the media, I'm talking about the players about
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: what they've seen from march Manning, both in springball and
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: in the fall camp workout. It's both in the production
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: element and also as a leader.
- 1:34:03Speaker 11: His mindset, how you approach. He's the first one in
- 1:34:06Speaker 11: and last want to leave every day.
- 1:34:10Speaker 8: He career.
- 1:34:10Speaker 11: He's not afraid to correct his guys. I'll just say
- 1:34:14Speaker 11: in that aspect of the game, and you know, he's
- 1:34:16Speaker 11: just moving much quicker.
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: You see the game much slower, So that is very different.
- 1:34:20Speaker 4: Remember last year, one of the fun things we had
- 1:34:24Speaker 4: in visiting with Ryan Nibblett was him talking about his
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: newborn daughter and how how great it was to be
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: around her, and how much fun and how much enjoyment
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: he hadn't we heard something on that earlier in the program.
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: But how holds his daughter now?
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: And and and the really important question, can he change
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: a diaper?
- 1:34:42Speaker 11: He's eleven months right now, it's going to be one
- 1:34:45Speaker 11: in a couple of eighteen days. I'm great at change rivers.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: That's an important thing for a new dad. You have
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: to be able to do that, all right. More from
- 1:34:56Speaker 4: Hero Canoe as well. The log coorts defensive lineman asked
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: about the intensity and the things that he's seeing, first
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: of all, starting with Will mush Champs defensive unit.
- 1:35:07Speaker 12: I mean, we adapted a little bit of a different scheme.
- 1:35:10Speaker 12: You know, you've seen it just in the spring. But
- 1:35:13Speaker 12: I think we're really aggressive with the play calling and
- 1:35:16Speaker 12: you know, we obviously want to make place and he's
- 1:35:18Speaker 12: putting us in the right position to do that.
- 1:35:19Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: So that intensity that everybody talks about with coach Boom,
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: with coach mush.
- 1:35:25Speaker 7: Champ, I probably say coach Muschamp.
- 1:35:28Speaker 12: I mean he what I love about him is hees
- 1:35:31Speaker 12: the teacher in the classroom obviously in the meetings and everything,
- 1:35:34Speaker 12: but on the field, he's making sure we got the
- 1:35:36Speaker 12: right intent behind everything and make sure we run to
- 1:35:38Speaker 12: the ball, make sure we focus on our technique.
- 1:35:40Speaker 7: And you hear him anywhere, like you know, he will.
- 1:35:43Speaker 12: Be with the DLAs for a second, and he will
- 1:35:44Speaker 12: be with the with the linebackers next thing.
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:35:46Speaker 12: It's like come on, you know, get your hands right,
- 1:35:48Speaker 12: you know, something like that. So I really loved it
- 1:35:51Speaker 12: about him.
- 1:35:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it.
- 1:35:53Speaker 4: Also, folks have noticed the physical changes in canoe himself
- 1:35:57Speaker 4: and getting himself in the better shape.
- 1:35:59Speaker 12: I'm probably wrong, like three eighteen, three twenty ish, so
- 1:36:03Speaker 12: I had to trim down a little bit, and naturally
- 1:36:05Speaker 12: you do that when it's like one hundred degrees outside.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I imagine it would getting down three eighteen to
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: that kind of How about what the physical changes to
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: him mean as opposed to coming off last year?
- 1:36:17Speaker 7: I mean, honestly, I think.
- 1:36:20Speaker 12: Again, a little bit of way, little lean muscle, but
- 1:36:25Speaker 12: I mean it wasn't too significant.
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: I was a little bit heavy in the spring.
- 1:36:28Speaker 12: I lost a little bit away in the summer, probably
- 1:36:31Speaker 12: around three twelve, three fifteen, Right.
- 1:36:33Speaker 4: Now, okay, all right, you know what you often to
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: hear about players being five star players and all that stuff.
- 1:36:41Speaker 5: What about five star character?
- 1:36:43Speaker 12: To have a championship team, you need selfless people like
- 1:36:45Speaker 12: to do that job and make sure everybody's in the
- 1:36:47Speaker 12: same page, gonna have great communication. Excuse me, but you
- 1:36:51Speaker 12: want to make sure like that these guys care for
- 1:36:54Speaker 12: each other like we can't have it like for example,
- 1:36:56Speaker 12: like everybody you know it's trying to make it to
- 1:36:58Speaker 12: the league, but I can't be focused I'm okay. I
- 1:37:00Speaker 12: don't want to help the younger guys develop because I
- 1:37:02Speaker 12: want to be the one that's playing at the end
- 1:37:04Speaker 12: of the day.
- 1:37:04Speaker 7: You gotta have guys to come right after you. You
- 1:37:06Speaker 7: know I can't. I can't play seventy straight and play straight.
- 1:37:09Speaker 7: You know, nobody can.
- 1:37:10Speaker 12: So you gotta have guys who can rotate and just
- 1:37:12Speaker 12: kind of like building a culture, like we help each other.
- 1:37:15Speaker 12: We want to be a great team. We want to
- 1:37:16Speaker 12: be the greatest to do it. So that's honest. See
- 1:37:19Speaker 12: what it takes, you know, just looking out for each
- 1:37:21Speaker 12: other and making sure you're selfless.
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: Great stuff to hear from Hero Canoe. We'll be back
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: to wrap up today's edition of the program. I'm thirteen
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: under the Zone.
