- 0:26- Welcome to the Becker's Healthcare podcast. I'm Kelly
- 0:28- Gooch, managing editor at Becker's, and I'm thrilled
- 0:30- to be joined today by Kevin Zhang, chief
- 0:32- nurse executive at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center
- 0:35- in California, part of Sutter Health. Kevin, thank
- 0:37- you so much for joining me today. Yeah.
- 0:39- Thank you for having me here. Of course.
- 0:41- So to start off, could you briefly introduce
- 0:43- yourself, your role, the scope of your organization,
- 0:46- and
- 0:47- talk about what's currently to make commanding most
- 0:49- of your attention right now as a leader?
- 0:50- Yeah. Of course. Yeah. Kevin Zhang. I'm the
- 0:52- chief nurse executive at Aldebay Summit Medical Center,
- 0:56- which is, 712
- 0:58- licensed vets,
- 0:59- facilities, three campuses in Oakland, Berkeley, California
- 1:03- that would kinda provide service from the psychiatry
- 1:06- to women's services and and kinda all in
- 1:09- between
- 1:09- and, within Sutter Health, in Northern California.
- 1:13- So in a year marked by rapid change,
- 1:15- what's a recent decision or pivot required
- 1:18- that required the most leadership conviction from you,
- 1:21- particularly when it came to aligning people, resources,
- 1:24- or capabilities?
- 1:25- Yeah. I think,
- 1:27- again, just to your previous question about the
- 1:29- the the what we're kinda working on from
- 1:31- a leadership perspective, I think we
- 1:33- and you're right in terms of the rapid
- 1:35- change that,
- 1:36- we have been focused a lot on providing
- 1:38- access to our patients. I think that's a
- 1:40- lot of a problem that a lot of
- 1:42- us face in this country for health care.
- 1:44- And we we have in in our site,
- 1:46- we have particularly a little bit more challenge
- 1:48- in terms of a payer mix perspective, just
- 1:50- not your rep location and to balance that
- 1:52- piece to making sure we continue to provide
- 1:55- access and all the services that our patient
- 1:57- and community,
- 1:58- deserve and and continue to
- 2:00- to be growing and and and providing a
- 2:03- service. So that's that's kind of what what
- 2:05- we were
- 2:06- most challenged with and and balancing that with
- 2:08- our employees' needs as well, making sure that
- 2:11- that we have a happy workforce and a
- 2:12- workforce that's healthy
- 2:14- to be able to provide that service to
- 2:16- our patients.
- 2:17- Totally. And so when you when you think
- 2:19- about that and and like you said, really
- 2:22- focusing on the workforce, that access component,
- 2:25- How did
- 2:26- that moment or those issues really challenge your
- 2:29- assumptions, and and what did it change about
- 2:31- how you approach decision making, talent, or organizational
- 2:34- readiness today?
- 2:35- Yeah. And and I think there there's
- 2:38- nothing all of us will be lying. There
- 2:40- there isn't, you know, uncertainty or fear. Right?
- 2:43- But like Winston Churchill said,
- 2:45- fear
- 2:47- fear is it's it's
- 2:49- it's a feeling and and really courage is
- 2:51- a decision.
- 2:52- So
- 2:53- I think we we gotta, as leaders, lean
- 2:55- into it and making sure to build a
- 2:57- right culture with our employees
- 2:59- and our workforce
- 3:01- to make sure that we are and and
- 3:02- as as, a lot of us at this
- 3:04- week and backers have talked about,
- 3:07- how how be one team with one purpose.
- 3:10- And I think we we go back a
- 3:11- lot to it, and, of course, our, you
- 3:13- know, CEO, Warren Thomas, really,
- 3:15- spearheads that in terms of we our mission
- 3:18- is pretty simple. It's it's care of our
- 3:20- patients first and our people always, and really
- 3:23- just to stay true to that and every
- 3:25- decision that we make.
- 3:26- Yeah. And so when you do think about
- 3:29- all of those forces we've we've mentioned that
- 3:31- are reshaping health care right now, where do
- 3:33- you believe leaders really need to do be
- 3:35- more decisive, especially when balancing speed, risk, and
- 3:39- having those right teams in place? Yeah. That's
- 3:41- a great question. I think we were just
- 3:42- talking about that. Right? And and and and
- 3:44- you mentioned a little bit, first of all,
- 3:46- make sure that that the organization cultures, right,
- 3:48- and as leaders and executives, that's all it's
- 3:51- it's our our role to make sure that
- 3:53- that is there and build the right team.
- 3:55- Right? And and you ask on how to
- 3:57- build the right team. I think we gotta
- 3:58- start from culture start from the,
- 4:01- our our mission, and we have to stay
- 4:03- true to it that we talked about earlier.
- 4:05- And going from that on, making sure that
- 4:07- every level of organization
- 4:08- really understand what what we're doing as as
- 4:10- a business, as as a organization,
- 4:12- and and has been no doubt about it.
- 4:14- Like I said, I'm really proud of our
- 4:16- organization's mission. It's simple,
- 4:18- like and as, you know, Brene Brown and
- 4:20- some other folks have talked about clarity, optimism,
- 4:24- that that's
- 4:25- also performance there. And and so we we
- 4:27- really need to to do that.
- 4:30- And then from then on, just
- 4:32- to you know, we had to execute. You
- 4:34- know, I think strategy is one thing. Executions
- 4:37- and operation quite quite hard to to we
- 4:39- can have a a
- 4:41- a great strategy, but really having the day
- 4:43- in, day out, have that as standard work,
- 4:45- to be able to to operationalize what we
- 4:48- want to do.
- 4:49- And
- 4:50- as uncertainty has become the more normal, of
- 4:53- course, across the board, what leadership habit or
- 4:55- mindset has been most critical in keeping your
- 4:57- organization and your own people moving forward?
- 5:00- Yeah. I think we we're gonna keep, again,
- 5:03- back to the inspiration piece.
- 5:05- That way, we remind our folks why we're
- 5:07- here, and and and sometimes it needs quite,
- 5:10- you know, frequent reminders. And because we get
- 5:12- we get bogged down and sometimes get too
- 5:14- busy into into work and and really kinda
- 5:17- have to think through,
- 5:19- that piece on a on a more regular
- 5:20- basis
- 5:21- and provide people tools. I mean, I think
- 5:23- I think I think Daniel Pink said this
- 5:25- before. You know,
- 5:27- stop trying to spend time to convince people
- 5:30- what you are thinking, but make it easier
- 5:32- for them to act. Right? So I think
- 5:34- that that gonna take that too hard. And
- 5:35- how do I always think, how do we
- 5:37- how do I provide tools?
- 5:39- And for for our lead whether it's leaders
- 5:42- in each level organization for them to function
- 5:44- at the optimal,
- 5:46- And I think that's that's where we put
- 5:47- the performance and and and the execution.
- 5:51- Well, thank you so much, Kevin, for for
- 5:54- a fun and interesting conversation and and your
- 5:56- time today as well. And, hopefully, we will
- 5:58- work together again soon. So thank you. Thank
- 6:00- you, Kyle. Appreciate it.
