- 1:18Speaker 1: the Favorite to the podcast from the Volume podcast Network.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I am Chad Mellman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We are bringing back the most revolutionary creative novel concept
- 1:32Speaker 1: that has been introduced into the podcasting world this quarter
- 1:38Speaker 1: since May. We're calling it what are the Odds? Everyone
- 1:42Speaker 1: knows it, everyone loves it. We're getting listeners to send
- 1:45Speaker 1: in their random events in their life, and our math
- 1:51Speaker 1: geniuses are Predictive Analytics team Sean Kerner and Nick Giffen
- 1:57Speaker 1: are putting the odds on something like this act really
- 2:00Speaker 1: happening before we bring them in. Simmon Hunter, my co host,
- 2:05Speaker 1: meant BFF, my companion, my compadre, professional better. This is
- 2:10Speaker 1: turned in one of my favorite things and podcasting. Now.
- 2:13Speaker 1: You love you and you love your own ideas. So
- 2:15Speaker 1: this is this is right up your alley chat, something
- 2:18Speaker 1: you came up with on your own show. Oh my god,
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's too good to be true. So I'm shocked. I
- 2:23Speaker 1: enjoy it because usually I just said, yeah, this is
- 2:24Speaker 1: great yet just to be nice to you. But I
- 2:26Speaker 1: love it. I love hearing the odds of things because
- 2:28Speaker 1: it's so interesting knowing there's always math bind everything in life.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That was something I learned very early on that every
- 2:35Speaker 1: little thing you can think of in this entire world,
- 2:37Speaker 1: everything around you, it's math, and like that freaks people out,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but that's the truth. So hearing these guys come on
- 2:42Speaker 1: to give us a math equation to a random moment
- 2:46Speaker 1: in life, it's the best simon. As usual. You've cut
- 2:51Speaker 1: to the quick and both hurt my feelings and identified
- 2:56Speaker 1: things about me that I swear to God, like I
- 2:59Speaker 1: thought only my life really understand and I thought I
- 3:02Speaker 1: was foodling everybody else, and then you come out with that.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But and while what you said as a hundred percent
- 3:07Speaker 1: accurate about me again, Full credit for the idea to
- 3:11Speaker 1: Jennifer Schiffman of West Hartford, Connecticut, who came up with
- 3:15Speaker 1: the segment when we were having drinks me, her husband Mike,
- 3:19Speaker 1: close friends of ours, my wife Stacy. I told him
- 3:22Speaker 1: the story. She said you should do that on the podcast.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Call it what are the odds? Asked? Viewers ask listeners.
- 3:27Speaker 1: All credit to jen Schiffman, content creator, coroner and Nick
- 3:31Speaker 1: Are you ready? I feel like coroner and Nick, that's
- 3:33Speaker 1: like a great show. It could be a great restaurant. Anyways,
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'll get to it. Here we go. What are the odds?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Listener Evan Pluso sent us a golf story covered recently
- 3:43Speaker 1: by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It is Taylor made for
- 3:46Speaker 1: this segment. It began Thursday, June two at the Minneapolis
- 3:50Speaker 1: Golf Club when thirteen year old Preston Miller carded his
- 3:54Speaker 1: first career hole in one. But young Preston, who plays
- 3:59Speaker 1: varsity golf at local St. Louis Park High School, didn't
- 4:02Speaker 1: save the ball as a key sake. Instead, he kept
- 4:05Speaker 1: playing with the same ball, and he lost it three
- 4:07Speaker 1: holes later after it struck a treat. He finished his
- 4:10Speaker 1: round and head to the clubhouse, and by the same time,
- 4:13Speaker 1: a golfer named ri Ricardo was searching deep in the
- 4:17Speaker 1: rough for his own ball when he came across Preston's titlist,
- 4:21Speaker 1: which had a St. Louis Park logo on it with
- 4:24Speaker 1: no one in site. Ricardo correctly assumed the ball was
- 4:27Speaker 1: lost and put it into his own bag. Near the
- 4:30Speaker 1: end of Ricardo's round on whole sixteen, he needed a
- 4:34Speaker 1: new ball, so he grabbed Preston's lost ball from his
- 4:39Speaker 1: bag at random and proceeded to card his fourth career
- 4:43Speaker 1: hole in one with it. After Ricardo showed off his
- 4:46Speaker 1: ball at the end of the round, the connection was
- 4:49Speaker 1: made in the clubhouse and Preston was called over to
- 4:52Speaker 1: confirm it was indeed his ball, and it became official.
- 4:56Speaker 1: The same golf ball had been used by two separate
- 4:59Speaker 1: golfers on the same course on the same day to
- 5:03Speaker 1: sink two separate holes in one. They asked the club's
- 5:08Speaker 1: head pro about it, and he doubted such a feat
- 5:10Speaker 1: had ever been accomplished before. Engulfs long history, we ask you,
- 5:16Speaker 1: croner and gift them. What are the odds? First off,
- 5:19Speaker 1: this is by far the craziest story we have done
- 5:22Speaker 1: so far, so let's go through each event one by one.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So there's really four things that needed to happen here.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The first was thirteen year old Preston had to hit
- 5:31Speaker 1: a hole of one on whole four, so we gave
- 5:33Speaker 1: him the average golfers odds, which is about twelve th
- 5:37Speaker 1: one to do that. But let me pause right there
- 5:40Speaker 1: that the fact that President did not stash his ball
- 5:42Speaker 1: away after hitting the hole of one is one of
- 5:45Speaker 1: the crazier things about this story like that that's insane
- 5:47Speaker 1: to me. So just for that to happen alone is
- 5:50Speaker 1: already pretty crazy, But we gave him twelve th one
- 5:53Speaker 1: to do that. Funny thing is Sean and I. We
- 5:55Speaker 1: try to throw cold water in a lot of these.
- 5:57Speaker 1: But everything we're doing here is like underestimating craziness of this.
- 6:02Speaker 1: First of all, the kids shouldn't have to be playing
- 6:03Speaker 1: with this ball. We're we're essentially saying this is like
- 6:06Speaker 1: the floor for these odds. The fact that he did
- 6:09Speaker 1: keep playing with his ball. Call Preston here. You know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: now he has to play with it on holes four
- 6:15Speaker 1: or five, six, and then a whole seven he shanks.
- 6:17Speaker 1: It ends up like in the brush area in whole twelve.
- 6:20Speaker 1: So now where we sending odds and was shaking it.
- 6:23Speaker 1: But then also Ricardo had to come across Preston's ball,
- 6:26Speaker 1: and this was definitely the toughest part to calculate. We're
- 6:29Speaker 1: giving that about a five o one chance of happening.
- 6:32Speaker 1: This is an area we're probably underestimating the odds. But
- 6:36Speaker 1: let's jump to step number three. So now that Ricardo
- 6:38Speaker 1: has this ball, we need to calculate the probability they
- 6:41Speaker 1: actually uses this ball. And when we did some research
- 6:45Speaker 1: on this and we read that Ricardo put the ball
- 6:47Speaker 1: in his bag and continue to play with the ball
- 6:49Speaker 1: that he had been using. So we had the rest
- 6:51Speaker 1: of whole twelve, fourteen, and fifteen to potentially lose this
- 6:56Speaker 1: ball that he had been playing with to have to
- 6:58Speaker 1: grab another ball. So let's a there's a chance he
- 7:01Speaker 1: doesn't lose the ball per hole on hole and fifteen,
- 7:06Speaker 1: so there's about a fifteen percent chance he would need
- 7:09Speaker 1: to turn to a new ball. Chance he keeps that ball.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So again, let's say one in six that he actually
- 7:14Speaker 1: needs to turn to a new ball. And we said,
- 7:16Speaker 1: if he turns to a new ball, we gave it
- 7:18Speaker 1: a chance he'd use this ball like he did, put
- 7:21Speaker 1: it right on top in the bag and he pulled
- 7:23Speaker 1: the one right off top, so we figured it's a
- 7:25Speaker 1: very good chance that, you know, he did grab this ball.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So one in six chance again of actually using this
- 7:30Speaker 1: ball on whole sixteen. Yeah, So then the last step
- 7:34Speaker 1: in this crazy story is Ricardo needed to hit a
- 7:36Speaker 1: hole in one on hole sixteen because that was the
- 7:38Speaker 1: only part three the rest of the way, so it
- 7:40Speaker 1: had to be this whole and considering Ricardo has already
- 7:43Speaker 1: made three hole and ones in his career, he's an
- 7:46Speaker 1: above average golfer. So we didn't give him the twelve
- 7:48Speaker 1: thousand one odds that we gave President. We gave him
- 7:51Speaker 1: closer to eight thousand and one. We thought that was
- 7:54Speaker 1: pretty fair. So after all that, after it's all said
- 7:57Speaker 1: and done, that gives us the probability of a three
- 8:00Speaker 1: point five billion to one that this would happen. And again,
- 8:04Speaker 1: the chances of Preston continuing to use that ball is crazy.
- 8:07Speaker 1: In my opinion, we didn't factor that in the fact
- 8:09Speaker 1: that Preston probably hit his worst shot of the entire
- 8:12Speaker 1: round on whole seven that needed to happen for Card
- 8:15Speaker 1: to find the ball, we couldn't really factor that in,
- 8:17Speaker 1: so again we're kind of underestimating it. So in theory,
- 8:20Speaker 1: this could be closer to ten billion to one if
- 8:23Speaker 1: if we're being honest, ten billion to one. What what
- 8:27Speaker 1: I love about this is Simon's right, like you boiled
- 8:32Speaker 1: down the map and the fact that you guys are
- 8:34Speaker 1: thinking so creatively about what you have to ascribe the
- 8:37Speaker 1: odds to. The odds need to be that not that
- 8:40Speaker 1: he shanks it. But that Ricardo finds the shank right.
- 8:44Speaker 1: At moments in this story it feels like you're taking
- 8:47Speaker 1: all the joy out of it, and then other times
- 8:49Speaker 1: when we get to the end, I'm just so glad
- 8:51Speaker 1: we got to a big number. Yeah, this is way
- 8:53Speaker 1: less likely than your band aid story. By the way,
- 8:57Speaker 1: a listener tweeted me and said that the odds I
- 9:01Speaker 1: had quoted on a recent podcast where I said it
- 9:04Speaker 1: was about food one didn't make sense and he hadn't
- 9:08Speaker 1: heard Nick your explanation of it. I do need to
- 9:11Speaker 1: make a correction because the real odds I think we
- 9:14Speaker 1: decided were like ten thousand one, which made more sense.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And of course I love that this listener had done
- 9:19Speaker 1: the math, like you have to assume this number of
- 9:22Speaker 1: flights this that he had actually looked at, like there
- 9:24Speaker 1: were fifty flights in this window at this time, this
- 9:27Speaker 1: number of passengers on this train. I'm like, dude, you
- 9:29Speaker 1: are deep and you are right. I'm giving the correction.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I apologize Nick and sewn great job, fellas the best
- 9:37Speaker 1: one yet definitely, And there's no underlying chop here. These
- 9:40Speaker 1: are all the straight things that just had to happen,
- 9:43Speaker 1: So there's just a totally crazy story. I also agree
- 9:46Speaker 1: that how cocky is this Preston kid that he's like,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I don't need to save that ball. I'll probably hit
- 9:51Speaker 1: another one. Yeah, he's only thirteen. This this is probably
- 9:54Speaker 1: first of many holy ones. But still I am a
- 9:58Speaker 1: memorabilia kind of guy. I would just keep it and
- 10:00Speaker 1: not even risk it. He risked it because he said,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you know, it's really hard to lose the ball on
- 10:05Speaker 1: this course, and he he didn't even think he would
- 10:07Speaker 1: lose it. He says he almost never loses the ball here,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and I guess he just kept playing with it. But yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I would have. I would have pocketed that thing right,
- 10:14Speaker 1: As I've said a thousands of times. Fucking kids. Sean

- 12:25Speaker 1: Mayo Bag. We did one earlier this summer. It was
- 12:29Speaker 1: wildly popular. You guys had a lot of questions sign
- 12:33Speaker 1: on listen you and I. When we first started doing
- 12:36Speaker 1: this podcast, we came in four and in the money
- 12:41Speaker 1: in the Draft Kings season long pick um contest And
- 12:45Speaker 1: we love doing these, and we came really close this
- 12:48Speaker 1: past year two if not for some sort of bad
- 12:50Speaker 1: decision making. In our opinions, what this is from Stevie
- 12:55Speaker 1: in our opinions, what would the perfect season long NFL
- 13:00Speaker 1: betting contest look like? Um, that's hard because it is
- 13:05Speaker 1: it is pretty good. That what they have now the
- 13:07Speaker 1: five I like the Draft Kings where we had the
- 13:09Speaker 1: year we had the two buys like that was kind
- 13:11Speaker 1: of like cool with the figure out what weeks to
- 13:14Speaker 1: skip and what weeks to play was kind of interesting wrinkle.
- 13:18Speaker 1: But to me, a perfect one would be just picking
- 13:21Speaker 1: three games a week, like no, no normal pro bets,
- 13:25Speaker 1: you know, big money on five different games. But any
- 13:27Speaker 1: given week three games that sounds about right. Like that
- 13:30Speaker 1: three games will I'll be locked in on and think
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'll find really good value. So the five game thing
- 13:36Speaker 1: I like because it helps the Joe Schmo like the guys,
- 13:38Speaker 1: like just a public better that wants to do these contests. Um,
- 13:42Speaker 1: I feel like that gives them an advantage over a
- 13:43Speaker 1: pro because you know, every every game you add, just
- 13:46Speaker 1: like in parlays, your odds go down. I'm getting it right.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I mean it's really hard to go five and O.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So you know the pro with me, yeah, I wish
- 13:53Speaker 1: it was just three games a week, but I honestly think,
- 13:57Speaker 1: I mean, we can talk about the d K, the
- 13:59Speaker 1: d K or the circle, but no, DK has got
- 14:02Speaker 1: to got it down pretty well. Now they have one
- 14:04Speaker 1: week that's a buy and they have you know pretty
- 14:07Speaker 1: good payouts, but Circle they had better payouts. So it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: all about what you're looking for. You're looking for bigger money.
- 14:13Speaker 1: That's that's probably the contest for you, other than day.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know. Well, what I agree with you is what
- 14:18Speaker 1: I also like about DK is you don't have the
- 14:20Speaker 1: lock until Sunday, and so you concur us though, what's
- 14:25Speaker 1: that that actually hurt us? Well, it hurt us because
- 14:29Speaker 1: we're stupid, not because in this situation it hurt It
- 14:34Speaker 1: hurt us because we like let lines influence us and
- 14:38Speaker 1: we started to play. Yeah, we just you know, we
- 14:42Speaker 1: didn't block out the noise. That's our fault. That's not
- 14:44Speaker 1: the contest fault. Um. So I like that. Uh, I
- 14:48Speaker 1: like that there's a late lock um. I think that's great.
- 14:52Speaker 1: A lot of contests do a Thursday lock Um. I
- 14:56Speaker 1: agree with you on the three I'd much rather do
- 14:59Speaker 1: that if I if I were building a perfect contest,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I'd make it even a little more sharper at the
- 15:08Speaker 1: risk of excluding people who, um, who might not play it. Otherwise,
- 15:14Speaker 1: maybe you increase the entry fee, make it three games,
- 15:19Speaker 1: create a little bit more situational strategy, so you can
- 15:24Speaker 1: start to include live betting. Because I think that is
- 15:27Speaker 1: becoming a much bigger deal in the betting space right now.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Can you buy out at halftime? Can you find a
- 15:33Speaker 1: half point if you can bet the other side or
- 15:35Speaker 1: make the right decision sort of strategically to find a
- 15:37Speaker 1: way to get yourself to even or with a little
- 15:40Speaker 1: money on a game that looks like it's going to
- 15:41Speaker 1: be a loss. I'd like to incorporate live betting. But ultimately,
- 15:45Speaker 1: the perfect season long NFL betting contest. What does it
- 15:48Speaker 1: look like? It's one with you and me at the
- 15:50Speaker 1: top of the rankings. Try to simplify things that you
- 15:56Speaker 1: just throw in a whole wrench, but like, yeah, let
- 15:58Speaker 1: just add live betting to a contest. It's like, yeah,
- 16:00Speaker 1: make it as complicated complicated as you can. I think
- 16:04Speaker 1: it will separate sort of the joes from the schmos,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and I think it'll make a little bit more strength. Um.
- 16:11Speaker 1: All right, let's see here's another one. It's about live betting.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Um from Chris. It was reported that NFL Sunday Ticket
- 16:19Speaker 1: will leave direct TV and move to a streaming service
- 16:21Speaker 1: in do you see the short delays caused by streaming
- 16:25Speaker 1: impacting NFL live betting? Is there a way to be
- 16:28Speaker 1: proactive to avoid this. Yeah, it's brutal. Um. If you're
- 16:33Speaker 1: if you like again, if you're a live better, you
- 16:36Speaker 1: need cable, Like there's no no YouTube, TV, no streaming
- 16:40Speaker 1: services to watch your games like that. I mean, that's tough.
- 16:44Speaker 1: It's honestly. That's why a lot of guys, I know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: they don't even own cable. Like, if they're gonna go
- 16:49Speaker 1: watch a game, they go to the book and that's
- 16:50Speaker 1: where they live betting. If they're been on their phones,
- 16:52Speaker 1: they bet at the book because they want live lines,
- 16:55Speaker 1: they want live place. So to me, if you if
- 16:57Speaker 1: you're just a fan of it and you're not gonna
- 17:00Speaker 1: be you know, like some of these degenerates where it's
- 17:02Speaker 1: like I want that half a second ahead so I
- 17:05Speaker 1: can get this underbet before everyone else knows. This guy
- 17:07Speaker 1: gets sacked. Like it's rare you can pull off that
- 17:10Speaker 1: half a second bet because most of these books updates
- 17:13Speaker 1: so quick and they check your bet before they approve
- 17:15Speaker 1: your bet. So it's not that big of a difference
- 17:18Speaker 1: is people make it out to be, But it definitely
- 17:20Speaker 1: is a difference. Like if you're on a TV that's
- 17:22Speaker 1: a fourteen second delay, you can get caught. You can
- 17:25Speaker 1: bet on a team all of a sudden, the guy
- 17:27Speaker 1: throws a pick six and it's like, wow, I just
- 17:28Speaker 1: literally lied bet this guy. If I wouldn't on a
- 17:31Speaker 1: fourteen second delay that that would that cost me some money.
- 17:34Speaker 1: So yeah, the Apple TV, I'm a I'm a fan
- 17:37Speaker 1: of it, honestly, like them getting Sunday ticket. To me,
- 17:39Speaker 1: that's that's great because me and Chad our job is
- 17:42Speaker 1: the product of the NFL. More people are gonna be
- 17:44Speaker 1: able to watch that than the Sunday ticket, So that's
- 17:47Speaker 1: great from that aspect. From the gambling aspect, you can't
- 17:51Speaker 1: lie bet delays like that if you're trying to bet
- 17:52Speaker 1: real big money. Yeah, the delays are really a hindrance
- 17:57Speaker 1: for live betting, and I know a lot of markets
- 18:00Speaker 1: are a lot of books would like live betting to
- 18:02Speaker 1: become more of their handle and have it be akin
- 18:05Speaker 1: to what's happening in Europe where live betting is upwards
- 18:09Speaker 1: of seventy of the handle. But the most popular sports
- 18:15Speaker 1: for live betting are tennis and obviously soccer, and especially
- 18:22Speaker 1: with soccer, they're just more of an opportunity as games
- 18:25Speaker 1: go on to make live bets just because of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: sort of length of time between action. Really really hard
- 18:33Speaker 1: to do that with the NFL, even look given the
- 18:36Speaker 1: night at earlier this year during the NBA playoffs when
- 18:41Speaker 1: the finals were happening, I was watching the finals and
- 18:44Speaker 1: like one of my kids friends who we were watching
- 18:48Speaker 1: it with, um, he was trying to bet bait me
- 18:53Speaker 1: into betting whether or not a guy was going to
- 18:54Speaker 1: make a free throw. But he was getting text from
- 18:56Speaker 1: a buddy about what was happening because the buddy was
- 18:58Speaker 1: a little bit ahead. So it's just really hard to
- 19:01Speaker 1: manage that. Yeah, now it's dangerous game. From David, what
- 19:06Speaker 1: is a normal daylight for both of you during the
- 19:09Speaker 1: NFL offseason, particularly NFL slow period of May and June.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I mean it's hard to say, just because COVID kind
- 19:15Speaker 1: of threw a wrench and everything. Like usually honestly would
- 19:18Speaker 1: just be traveling or visiting other pros or visiting friends
- 19:20Speaker 1: from like growing up and just traveling a lot. To
- 19:22Speaker 1: stay busy because I'm like most people, if I'm not
- 19:25Speaker 1: being busy doing stuff, I'm usually spending money on stupid
- 19:28Speaker 1: ship or gambling like a degenerate I am. So I
- 19:31Speaker 1: try to stay busy this year it's been a little different.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I've been in definitely more like you know, shaking hands,
- 19:37Speaker 1: kissing babies, like meeting with different people, meeting with other pros,
- 19:41Speaker 1: and like kind of setting stuff up, just because the
- 19:43Speaker 1: legalization has really changed everything in my life. Like I mean,
- 19:46Speaker 1: I used to maybe get three four phone calls a
- 19:49Speaker 1: day in the off season. Now I'm getting calls constantly
- 19:51Speaker 1: just because New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, these areas are
- 19:56Speaker 1: becoming pretty big deal in the gambling world. Like not
- 20:00Speaker 1: it's not what Vegas used to be, Like Vegas used
- 20:02Speaker 1: to be the spot. Now it's kind of becoming the Northeast.
- 20:04Speaker 1: So it's definitely been different for me during this offseason.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I say, a normal day would just be that it's
- 20:10Speaker 1: like I just try to keep busy, maybe go for
- 20:12Speaker 1: walks and do whatever, but just a lot of phone
- 20:15Speaker 1: calls and a lot of conversation of like what's the
- 20:17Speaker 1: next move, what's the next step with with what everything's
- 20:19Speaker 1: going in the sports gambling world. I would say I
- 20:22Speaker 1: usually get up about six thirty and then I try
- 20:25Speaker 1: to do like, you know, ten minutes of stretching, just
- 20:27Speaker 1: some me time. You know, it's not self love is
- 20:30Speaker 1: not selfish. Then I'll take my kid to school, come back,
- 20:34Speaker 1: have a little breakfast, maybe an espresso, a little bit
- 20:36Speaker 1: of smoke salmon, no bagel or anything, just to smoke salmon,
- 20:39Speaker 1: some olive oil and lemon on top of that, and
- 20:41Speaker 1: maybe some overnight oats. Then I'll probably hit the peloton
- 20:46Speaker 1: or maybe the echelant the rowing machine. Then I take
- 20:48Speaker 1: a shot or maybe I'll walk the dog, depending if
- 20:50Speaker 1: my wife is able to do it or not. Then
- 20:52Speaker 1: I'm in zoom meetings May and June because you know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: my real job is as an executive, not as uh.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Podcast blow Hard are all about planning. It's my It's
- 21:01Speaker 1: honestly so much fun when we're figuring out what we
- 21:03Speaker 1: want to do during football, when we're in heavy hiring mode.
- 21:07Speaker 1: We're like thinking strategically and figuring out what's going to
- 21:10Speaker 1: happen for the rest of the year, getting some deals done.
- 21:13Speaker 1: It's all blue sky, it's all optimism. You haven't lost
- 21:16Speaker 1: anything during the NFL season yet where the pressure is
- 21:19Speaker 1: really intense. So me and June usually executive NG and
- 21:23Speaker 1: then Matt Mitchell is telling me what we're gonna talk
- 21:25Speaker 1: about in the podcast. Not Mitchell, You've got anything to
- 21:27Speaker 1: add to that. I like that you think being a
- 21:29Speaker 1: podcast blowhard, it's just a it's just a barnacle on
- 21:32Speaker 1: your professional ship. That's nice. That's nice that you find
- 21:36Speaker 1: time to squeeze that in. It's one to in my
- 21:39Speaker 1: brain power. Isn't it like that for everybody? Let's see
- 21:45Speaker 1: in the last few seasons. This is from Connor, there
- 21:48Speaker 1: have been times when NFL games have become unwatchable. Completely agree,
- 21:53Speaker 1: from so many delays in the action, replay reviews, injury,
- 21:55Speaker 1: time outs, penalties, commercial breaks. As a game bring viewer,
- 22:01Speaker 1: it can even be tough to finish the game start
- 22:02Speaker 1: to finish. Could not agree more. Do we foresee any
- 22:06Speaker 1: changes in the NFL's and entertainment products in the years
- 22:08Speaker 1: to come faster games? Is the money involved too large
- 22:12Speaker 1: to expect meaningful changes. I think they'll be changes. I
- 22:15Speaker 1: don't think it's going to do with money. I think
- 22:16Speaker 1: like the product just needs to improve. Last year you
- 22:20Speaker 1: could see they were making too many holding calls. Earlier
- 22:23Speaker 1: in the year, it was stopping every fucking game. The
- 22:25Speaker 1: year before it was the p I s like it
- 22:28Speaker 1: was really interminable. How they call these games, and it
- 22:32Speaker 1: becomes unwatchable because of that. So to me, I think
- 22:34Speaker 1: they'll reevaluate as they always do, how aggressive their calling
- 22:38Speaker 1: penalties and the impact that has in the flow of
- 22:40Speaker 1: the game. Connor, my friend, don't be anxious. Were you
- 22:44Speaker 1: in the rush? Where are you going? Why is chatting
- 22:46Speaker 1: a rush? You guys have nothing to do, you have
- 22:47Speaker 1: nowhere to go, There's nothing going on. So I'm the
- 22:50Speaker 1: other way. It's like, I don't care. I just want
- 22:52Speaker 1: them to get these games right. Like my biggest pet
- 22:54Speaker 1: peeve is fandom calls or calls deciding games. Like, I'm
- 22:58Speaker 1: with you on that. That's some of this rough freestoff.
- 23:00Speaker 1: There's too much money involved, like they have to clean up.
- 23:02Speaker 1: I can't tell me any bets last year that you know,
- 23:04Speaker 1: people had a bad taste in their mouth because it
- 23:05Speaker 1: felt like a referee decided a game at the end
- 23:07Speaker 1: of the game. So I'm with you on that. But
- 23:10Speaker 1: the commercial breaks all that other stuff, It's just like,
- 23:13Speaker 1: I don't know, it feels like that's if that's the
- 23:15Speaker 1: price we pay for a great product. It's like, I'm
- 23:17Speaker 1: cool with it, but I feel like everyone gets the
- 23:20Speaker 1: NFL at this point. It's like if a team goes
- 23:23Speaker 1: three and out and it's a Monday night game. They
- 23:25Speaker 1: don't care the other team just went three and out.
- 23:27Speaker 1: They're gonna show another commercial afterwards. So yeah, it drives
- 23:30Speaker 1: me a little crazy, but that's what cell phones are for.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Just look at your phone for two minutes and then
- 23:33Speaker 1: look up. Look football is back on. So I try
- 23:36Speaker 1: not to be too down about all the commercial breaks
- 23:38Speaker 1: because I get it. It's all a product. You're so
- 23:41Speaker 1: wise and patient, Simon. I try, Chad. If I hadn't
- 23:46Speaker 1: been assigned that March Madness Vegas story back in your
- 23:48Speaker 1: magazine days, would your career play out differently. I wasn't
- 23:52Speaker 1: even assigned it. It was a trade a buddy of
- 23:56Speaker 1: mine named Brendan O'Connor, who was an editor of the
- 23:59Speaker 1: magazine as well. I had been to sign the story,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and then he got a sign a bigger story. He
- 24:05Speaker 1: wanted to go do a feature on the Catcher Jason Kendall,
- 24:08Speaker 1: who played for the Pirates. So he was going to
- 24:10Speaker 1: go do that bigger story and asked me if I
- 24:12Speaker 1: would do the Vegas story. He gave me all of
- 24:14Speaker 1: his notes. It was great, and if I don't do that,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I end up not writing the book. The odds because
- 24:21Speaker 1: it was based on one of the guys I profiled
- 24:23Speaker 1: in the magazine story. Then I don't learn anything about betting.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I don't learn anything about this shadow world. I don't
- 24:30Speaker 1: start blogging about it, tving about it, podcasting about it.
- 24:34Speaker 1: None of it. It's not part of my life. So yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 1: a d total game changer. You've got this one from
- 24:41Speaker 1: John which I thought of it did think of a
- 24:43Speaker 1: name for us. It's if Chad and Simon were traveling
- 24:46Speaker 1: comedy act, what would their name be? I came up with.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Simon says, don't be a Chad. Why does it have
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be mean about me? Because Chad's a hated name.
- 24:55Speaker 1: It's just your fault. It's just what the world's become.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So Simon says, don't be a chat. I feel like
- 25:01Speaker 1: it gets both of our names. It's both things we
- 25:03Speaker 1: hated because I hated Simon says growing up, I know
- 25:06Speaker 1: Chad hates don't be a Chad. So it's a perfect combo.
- 25:10Speaker 1: That is a great That is a great idea, Simon.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I feel like Matt Mitchell would have a field day
- 25:17Speaker 1: writing comedy gold for us for that for that act
- 25:21Speaker 1: T shirt. Now that's already being a man into a
- 25:23Speaker 1: T shirt. Such a good idea merch merch alert, true story.
- 25:28Speaker 1: New York magazine did um a story about the phrase
- 25:31Speaker 1: Chad and like the female equivalent was a Stacy, my
- 25:36Speaker 1: wife's name. That's crazy. So uh, she's cut out like
- 25:42Speaker 1: the headline from that and put on our bulletin board.
- 25:44Speaker 1: And our kids troll us as you can imagine about
- 25:46Speaker 1: that all the time. I love it. Great questions, keep
- 25:51Speaker 1: them coming. We will try to do one more male
- 25:53Speaker 1: Bag before we get to the end of the season,
- 25:56Speaker 1: but even if we don't, we can answer questions throughout
- 25:59Speaker 1: the rest of the year. This has been the favorite
- 26:01Speaker 1: podcast from the Volume podcast network. I am Chad Millman.
