- 0:00My Playful Wife. Episode 10, The Question. Written
- 0:04by Mia. Piyush took the job. He called on a Thursday
- 0:11evening to say, so, Seloni's phone, my flat,
- 0:15the three of us briefly inhabiting the same moment
- 0:18from our different places. She put it on speaker,
- 0:22which I understood, as its own kind of statement,
- 0:24you are part of this. You are allowed to be part
- 0:28of this. We congratulated him and asked the questions
- 0:32that the news warranted, and he talked about
- 0:35the timeline and the firm and the flat he would
- 0:38find in Bengaluru. When he hung up, the flat
- 0:43was very quiet. Saloni set the phone on the table.
- 0:48She sat with it for a moment, her hands flat
- 0:51on the surface beside it, and I watched her do
- 0:54this. The specific stillness of someone containing
- 0:57something large. She was good at this. It was
- 1:01one of the things I had always loved about her.
- 1:04The capacity to hold large feelings without letting
- 1:07them spill. To be moved without being undone.
- 1:12She stood. She went to the kitchen with the decisive
- 1:15purposefulness of a woman who has decided that
- 1:18motion is the correct response to feeling. I
- 1:22heard the tap. the stove, the sounds of preparation.
- 1:26I let her go. I sat in the living room and thought
- 1:32about what Bengaluru meant, about distance and
- 1:35proximity and the specific geography of what
- 1:38we had built, the three of us, over these months.
- 1:41I thought about how much of what I had become
- 1:43had been shaped by the pressure of the visits,
- 1:46the way a thing takes its form under heat and
- 1:49force, and whether what I had become would hold
- 1:51without that pressure. I thought it would. I
- 1:56thought I was, now, a person who held his shape
- 1:59under his own power rather than the situational
- 2:02power of being continuously tested. After a while,
- 2:06I went to the kitchen. She was making something
- 2:10elaborate, a dish with many stages, the kind
- 2:14that required sustained attention and produced
- 2:17the particular smell of ours. Her back to me,
- 2:20her shoulders carrying something. I leaned against
- 2:25the counter. Say what you're not saying, I said.
- 2:31She kept moving. I'm not not saying anything.
- 2:36Saloni. A pause. The knife slowed. She set it
- 2:42down. She turned. Her face, I want to describe
- 2:47it accurately, was not crying because Saloni
- 2:50did not cry easily, the way some people don't
- 2:53cry easily not because they feel less but because
- 2:55the feeling has nowhere to exit through that
- 2:58particular channel. But it was near the territory,
- 3:01the edges of it, something close to the surface
- 3:04that was staying there through an act of will.
- 3:08It's fine, she said, her voice steady. It's a
- 3:12good opportunity. He should go. Yes, I said.
- 3:19And it's not. It doesn't change the... She stopped.
- 3:23Started again. He'll still come. For visits.
- 3:27The distance isn't impossible. No, I said. It
- 3:34isn't. So it's fine, she said. Yes, I said. And
- 3:41it's also not nothing. She looked at me. No,
- 3:48she said. It's not nothing. I crossed the kitchen.
- 3:53I put my hands on her shoulders, my hands on
- 3:56her shoulders gently, steadily, the grip of a
- 3:59man who has been practicing at a certain kind
- 4:01of steadiness for months and has got reasonably
- 4:04good at it. She was warm under my palms. I felt
- 4:08her shoulders drop slightly. It's allowed to
- 4:12be something, I said. You don't have to make
- 4:15it smaller than it is to make it acceptable.
- 4:18It can be what it is. She looked at me, her eyes
- 4:24very clear and slightly too bright. You're being
- 4:28very good, she said. I'm trying, I said. You
- 4:35keep trying, she said. You don't stop. No, I
- 4:41said. I don't. She looked at me for a moment
- 4:45longer, and then she leaned her forehead against
- 4:48my collarbone. The weight of it, the specific
- 4:52gravity of a head that has been holding itself
- 4:54up for a while and has decided, for just a moment,
- 4:58to rest. I put my arms around her and held her.
- 5:04Outside the city. March getting warm, a dog somewhere,
- 5:09the sound of traffic, inside, her forehead against
- 5:14my chest, her hands between us, and the feeling
- 5:17that I was something she was coming back to,
- 5:19not settling, not resolving into, but actively
- 5:23returning to, the way you return to a thing that
- 5:26is yours. After a while, she straightened. She
- 5:31looked at me. He'll come at Diwali, she said.
- 5:36He mentioned it. Then we'll make something good
- 5:40for Diwali, I said. She almost smiled. Not quite.
- 5:46Still too full. He might bring someone, she said.
- 5:50He mentioned a woman from the firm. Casually.
- 5:54You know how he mentions things casually. Yes,
- 5:58I said. I did know. He had always done this.
- 6:03Embedded the significant thing in the ordinary,
- 6:05mentioned it sideways so you had time to adjust
- 6:08to it before he asked you to meet it directly.
- 6:11How do you feel about that, she said. I thought
- 6:15about this honestly. How did I feel about my
- 6:18brother building a life in Bengaluru that included
- 6:21a woman from his firm? About the geometry of
- 6:24all of us rearranging the way it would rearrange?
- 6:29I think it's right, I said. I think that's what
- 6:33should happen. She looked at me. You mean it,
- 6:39she said. Yes, I said. He should have his own
- 6:44life. The full version of it. Her expression
- 6:48was complicated in the way of someone receiving
- 6:51something they wanted and hadn't let themselves
- 6:54expect. Okay, she said. Go back to cooking, I
- 7:00said. The smell is incredible. She went back
- 7:05to cooking. I sat at the table and watched her
- 7:08and thought about the particular quality of the
- 7:11moment. The grief in it, real and present, and
- 7:15the love in it, also real, and the strange gift
- 7:18of a marriage that had been forced into a kind
- 7:21of honesty it might never have arrived at on
- 7:23its own. Piyush came for a last long weekend
- 7:29before the Bengaluru move. Four days. More deliberate
- 7:33than the previous visits. Chosen, planned, the
- 7:37last instance of this particular geography. He
- 7:42and Saloni went to Lajpat Nagar on the second
- 7:45day, just the two of them. She had suggested
- 7:48it. I had said go, genuinely meant it. I was
- 7:52home when they came back, late afternoon, the
- 7:54city golden, both of them carrying bags. She
- 7:59brought me cloth. She had bought a small length
- 8:02of something for me without telling me she would.
- 8:04A cotton in a muted blue, the kind of simple
- 8:07thing she said would make good cordas. For you,
- 8:12she said, setting it on the table. I looked at
- 8:16it, then at her. You thought about me. I said.
- 8:23I always think about you, she said simply. I
- 8:28picked up the cloth. It was soft, had good weight,
- 8:31exactly the kind of thing I would have reached
- 8:33for myself if I had been there. Thank you, I
- 8:38said. She was already moving to the kitchen,
- 8:42but she paused at the doorway and looked back
- 8:45at me, and in that look was the whole complicated
- 8:48truth of what we were. The love that had always
- 8:51been there, and the love that had been added
- 8:54to it, and the difficulty and the chosenness
- 8:56of all of it. And then she was in the kitchen,
- 8:59and the moment was done. On the last evening,
- 9:05we went to the terrace. I had not suggested this.
- 9:09It was Saloni's idea, the practical solution
- 9:12to the last night's wait. She brought a rug and
- 9:16cushions up, the small logistics of making something
- 9:19possible. and we sat on the roof as the city
- 9:22lit up below us. The three of us. December becoming
- 9:27warmer air, the city spreading in all directions,
- 9:31the particular view from the roof that I had
- 9:34never fully appreciated before. You could see
- 9:37the shape of the neighborhood from here. The
- 9:40density of it, the lives compressed into those
- 9:43few square kilometers, the whole unlikely assemblage
- 9:47of people living their lives. We talked. Real
- 9:53talking, the kind that happens when the occasion
- 9:55gives permission for it. Piyush talked about
- 9:58the future with an honesty I hadn't heard from
- 10:01him before. What he wanted, what he was afraid
- 10:04of, the specific shape of his ambition, and the
- 10:07parts of it that still felt uncertain. He talked
- 10:11about Bengaluru with the specific ambivalence
- 10:13of someone who has chosen to do something and
- 10:16isn't entirely sure they've chosen correctly.
- 10:20Saloni listened with the complete quality of
- 10:23her attention. She asked questions that came
- 10:26from actually hearing him rather than from constructing
- 10:29responses. I watched her listen and thought about
- 10:33what it was to be received by her fully. to have
- 10:35her attention without remainder, and how lucky
- 10:38my brother was to have had it, and how lucky
- 10:41I was to have it still, and how strange and true
- 10:44it was that those two things could coexist. I
- 10:48asked questions, too. We talked for two hours.
- 10:53At some point, Piyush looked at me directly.
- 10:57Biyahi said, Yes, I said. Can I ask you something?
- 11:05Yes, I said. He looked at the city. He took a
- 11:10breath. Are you okay, he said. I mean, actually,
- 11:14not the answer you give people. The actual answer.
- 11:20The question sat in the night air. Celony was
- 11:23very still. I looked at my brother. I thought
- 11:28about all the things the question contained.
- 11:30The history of this year. The kitchen, the balcony,
- 11:33the framework I had built in the absence of instructions,
- 11:37the gym, the notebook, the phone call to Bengaluru,
- 11:40the nights that had been transformed, the marriage
- 11:44that had been broken and remade. I'm something
- 11:48better than okay, I said. I don't have a word
- 11:51for it, but it's real. He nodded, slowly, absorbing
- 11:58this. I didn't mean for any of it to, he started.
- 12:03I know, I said. It wasn't planned. We didn't.
- 12:11I know that, I said. I've always known that.
- 12:16He looked at me, his face young in the dark,
- 12:19the same face that had cried at cartoons and
- 12:23hidden a cat in his hostel room and shaken my
- 12:25hand in a lift and asked me to confirm that things
- 12:28were fine. What you did, he said. What you chose.
- 12:33I don't think I could have. You would have, I
- 12:38said. If you loved someone enough, you'd find
- 12:41what you needed to find. He was quiet for a moment.
- 12:47It's good that you're going, I said. To Bengaluru.
- 12:51It's right. He looked at me sharply. I mean it,
- 12:57I said. Build something there. The whole version
- 13:00of it. That's what should happen. Something released
- 13:05in him. I could see it the specific release of
- 13:09a thing that has been held in tension for a long
- 13:11time. He looked at Saloni. She looked at him
- 13:15with an expression that confirmed whatever he
- 13:17needed confirmed. Okay, he said. Come at Diwali,
- 13:23I said. Bring the woman from the firm. He looked
- 13:28surprised. Then he laughed, genuine full. You
- 13:34know about that, he said. You mentioned it casually,
- 13:38I said. You always mention things casually. He
- 13:45left the next morning. The goodbye at the door
- 13:49had a different quality from all the others.
- 13:51Less weight in it. Not because it mattered less,
- 13:54but because it had been settled. The unresolved
- 13:57things had been, over the months, slowly resolved.
- 14:00Not finished. Finished is the wrong word. But
- 14:03settled, like sediment finding its level. Clear
- 14:07water above. He hugged Saloni. She held him.
- 14:12Brief. Complete. He shook my hand. He held it.
- 14:19Come to Bengaluru, he said. Both of you. We will.
- 14:25I said, and meant it. The lift, the doors. Saloni
- 14:32and I alone in the flat. She stood at the door
- 14:36for a moment, her back to me, hands still on
- 14:40the handle. Then she turned and crossed the flat
- 14:43and stopped in front of me and looked up at me
- 14:46with a gaze that held nothing back. You want
- 14:50to know something, she said. Yes, I said. I chose
- 14:56you, she said. I've been choosing you since the
- 14:59beginning. I know that doesn't sound right given
- 15:02everything. I know you have every reason not
- 15:06to believe it, but it's the truest thing I know.
- 15:10I looked at my wife. I thought about the green
- 15:14chutney she made because she knew I forgot to
- 15:17ask. The chai at the right hand, the right temperature,
- 15:21without my asking. The three years of small,
- 15:24ordinary choices that had added up to, I see
- 15:28this person. I know this person. I am staying.
- 15:32I thought about what she had said in the notebook.
- 15:35He is learning to see. I can feel it. I don't
- 15:39know yet if I'm glad. She knew now. I could see
- 15:44that she knew. I know, I said. She put her hand
- 15:51flat on my chest. The sentence in a touch. The
- 15:55thing she said with her hand that she couldn't
- 15:57say with anything else. Good, she said. I put
- 16:04my hand over hers. The flat was quiet. The city
- 16:09ongoing. The question the year had asked, what
- 16:12kind of man does this make you, was still not
- 16:15entirely answered. It was a question I would
- 16:18be answering for the rest of my life, probably.
- 16:21That was the nature of real questions. But I
- 16:25was answering it here, in this flat, with this
- 16:29woman, with my hand over hers, and the March
- 16:32morning coming in through the kitchen window
- 16:34at its usual angle. Same light. Different eyes.
- 16:41Still choosing. The rest of that day was quiet.
- 16:48We ate. We moved around the flat. She went to
- 16:52the workroom for two hours. The collection pressing
- 16:55made deadline real. The work that had to happen
- 16:58regardless of what else was happening. And I
- 17:01sat with the notebook and wrote. Not about the
- 17:04morning. About something smaller. The cloth she
- 17:07had bought me in Bengaluru. The specific blue
- 17:10of it. The weight of it in my hands when she'd
- 17:13set it on the table. She thought about me. That
- 17:16was what I had said. She always thinks about
- 17:19you, she had said. I wrote. The ordinary evidence
- 17:24of being loved. The cloth she chose in a market
- 17:28because she knows the blue I reach for. This
- 17:31is also love. This is love's daily form. The
- 17:35one that doesn't require occasion. When she came
- 17:39out of the workroom, at six her hands were roughened
- 17:42from handling fabric and there was a trace of
- 17:45chalk on her sleeve from marking. She saw me
- 17:48looking. Don't, she said. What? Look at me like
- 17:55that. Like what? She sat down across from me,
- 18:01like you're going to put it in the notebook.
- 18:05I looked at the notebook. I looked at her. I
- 18:08picked up the pen. She laughed, the real one,
- 18:13from the stomach, surprised out of her. I hate
- 18:17you, she said. No, you don't, I said, writing.
- 18:23What are you writing? Chalk on her sleeve, the
- 18:28real laugh. She knows when I'm watching. She
- 18:33shook her head. You've become insufferable. You
- 18:38made me this way, I said. She reached over and
- 18:43tried to take the notebook. I held it out of
- 18:46reach. We were briefly ridiculous in the best
- 18:49way, two adults struggling over a small book
- 18:52in a kitchen at the end of a day. And she was
- 18:54laughing and I was laughing and it lasted maybe
- 18:5730 seconds before she gave up and sat back and
- 19:00looked at me with the expression that was specifically
- 19:02for me, the one I hadn't known she had until
- 19:05recently. The one that held the full weight of
- 19:08what we were. I'm glad you stayed, she said.
- 19:13I know, I said. I'm glad you kept choosing it.
- 19:20I know, I said again. Every day, she said. Not
- 19:26just once. Every day you've chosen this. Yes,
- 19:32I said. She looked at me for a long moment, her
- 19:37hands in her lap, chalk -marked warm. Then I'll
- 19:42keep being worth it, she said. The light was
- 19:45going outside, the city settling into its evening,
- 19:49the flat around us, our life around us, the one
- 19:53we had not planned and had not been given instructions
- 19:56for and had been building from the available
- 19:59materials of who we actually were. You already
- 20:03are, I said. Later I wrote in the notebook. March.
- 20:12The chalk on her sleeve. She said, I'll keep
- 20:16being worth it, I said. You already are. We ate
- 20:21dinner. The city did what cities do. And below
- 20:25that, three years of marriage. Seven months of
- 20:29knowing. The knowing did not diminish the love.
- 20:33The knowing expanded the love into a shape I
- 20:36didn't expect. Larger. Less comfortable. More
- 20:40true. This is what I'm learning. That love is
- 20:44not a thing you have. It's a practice. A daily
- 20:48decision. A series of choices. Each one informed
- 20:52by the last. Each one building on what has been
- 20:55built. I choose her. The full her. Not the version
- 21:00I thought I was getting. The actual one. I put
- 21:06down the pen. Saloni came to the kitchen doorway.
- 21:11Come to bed, she said. One minute, I said. I
- 21:18wrote one more line. She called me from the doorway.
- 21:21She is standing there now. I should go. I closed
- 21:26the notebook. I went. I put the notebook away.
- 21:34I went to the bedroom. She was already in bed,
- 21:37reading, her hair loose, the specific domestic
- 21:41piece of the end of a day. She looked up when
- 21:44I came in. Done, she said. Done, I said. Good,
- 21:53she said. She went back to her book. Symbolo
