- 0:00Zara and H&M are facing a lot of competition from the likes of
- 0:03SHE and and to some degree both are trying to elevate who they
- 0:08are and what their position is to justify their perhaps higher
- 0:13cost. Hello, welcome to the Retail
- 0:26podcast. Now for some of you who are
- 0:29savvy out there and have been to a few conferences across the
- 0:32globe, you'll recognise my next guest, Michelle Evans from
- 0:36Euromonitor is the global read. Sorry, global would be for
- 0:39retail insights. She was also at NRF doing the US
- 0:44grocery trends, so we're very fortunate to have her.
- 0:48I'm, I'm a massive fan of Michelle and Urine monitor.
- 0:50I really enjoy the way that they distil these major trends, major
- 0:55data elements. I've I've seen Michelle, I think
- 0:57over two years now at different conferences at NRA Shop Talk and
- 1:03each time I'm left delighted. Michelle, welcome to the show.
- 1:08And thank you. Thank you for having me on.
- 1:10That's OK. So I believe in, in, in
- 1:14imminently you're going to be releasing your top five digital
- 1:17trends for 2025 and you're going to be able to maybe just take us
- 1:22through through that. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:25So this is work we've done annually.
- 1:27I think this is our 9th year. So our digital shopper trends
- 1:31look at, you know how our most digitally savvy shoppers are
- 1:36changing and, and what to expect in the year ahead.
- 1:40So yeah, I'm happy to to talk through some of them with you.
- 1:43Could you just give us a little heads up on you know yourself
- 1:47and your own monitor? Yeah.
- 1:49So for those maybe not familiar with your monitor, we're a
- 1:53global market intelligence agency.
- 1:56So we're based out of London, I'm out of our Chicago office
- 2:00and we help clients around the world with their growth
- 2:05strategies. We do research across the number
- 2:08of industries in particular I'm in our, you know, retail
- 2:13ecommerce type area. So I've managed insights and in
- 2:17our client engagements in that realm.
- 2:20So I've been at the company it's you know, this year will be 15
- 2:24years and have been in in this space for a while helped to
- 2:29launch originally our digital shopper.
- 2:32We do have a product called digital shopper that's coming up
- 2:36on I think 9 years since we've launched that.
- 2:40So that was early days on mobile was, you know, starting to
- 2:43change how consumers shop. So I've been focused on that and
- 2:46then obviously picked up for this wider repel vantage point
- 2:50along the way. And that's why I spoke about
- 2:52grocery trends of the recent interrupt show.
- 2:55What are the top five digital trends that you're seeing for
- 2:582025? Yeah, happy to talk through some
- 3:01of them. So I think you know, every year
- 3:05when we do this, there's some some overarching trends are
- 3:10overarching themes, I guess is the right word that come to
- 3:13mind. So in recent years, things like
- 3:17greater sophistication of E com and social media, social media
- 3:20is playing a big role in our report this year.
- 3:24One of them is around the idea of brands and retailers having
- 3:28to rebuild trust with consumers. So this is, you know, if you
- 3:34think about social media when it started, you know, consumers
- 3:37became a bit savvy, realised, you know, brands and retailers
- 3:40may not, you know, they're, they're putting out messages and
- 3:43maybe I should trust or not trust.
- 3:45And then influencers came along and, and then they were
- 3:49obviously selling, you know, sponsorships against against
- 3:53themselves as well. So increasingly consumers will
- 3:56become, you know, a bit more wary when it when they're
- 3:59interacting in that medium. So what we're talking about here
- 4:03is more so the rise of, you know, micro nano influencers and
- 4:09the role that that they play in, you know, building that trust
- 4:13with consumers. Obviously they tend to be, you
- 4:17know, a bit more community driven, Maybe they're actually
- 4:20in your community or maybe they're, you know, in a
- 4:22community, you know, that that more centred around interest,
- 4:29but someone that you can trust to guide you to to products and
- 4:34services. And so one of the other trends
- 4:38that we're looking at, I would say speaks more to it.
- 4:42It's also social related, you know, consumers or clearly on
- 4:48social media or clearly online more and on social media more.
- 4:53So it's just the place that they're interacting and
- 4:56naturally, you know, looking maybe to shop.
- 4:59So this trend looks at, you know, the the shopification of
- 5:04social media, the idea of making these platforms easier to shop.
- 5:09So we're seeing, you know, these operators, you know, bring in
- 5:14these different types of new functionality to make it easier
- 5:19to, you know, execute the purchase right online.
- 5:23So one of the ones I think about is Instagram and they pushed in
- 5:27the last year, you know, making retailers and brands stay within
- 5:32Instagram to sell the product. So you know, if, if it is a
- 5:37brand or a retailer pushing something and you see the video,
- 5:42you know, as you click on it, you'll see the, the buy now
- 5:45button and you're taken through through that experience.
- 5:49So it's, it's keeping them within the platform.
- 5:53Clearly that means more commissions for the, for the
- 5:57platform themselves. And then, you know, there's
- 6:00other things like YouTube has done some different efforts when
- 6:04it comes to an affiliate programme where they're making
- 6:10it easier to tag things within videos, you know, to to execute
- 6:17said purchase. And we're also seeing different
- 6:20partnerships, like there was a partnership between Instacart
- 6:25and Google Ads. Now they've added YouTube as
- 6:28well. So it's connecting those dots,
- 6:31you know, to make it easier for consumers to execute on those
- 6:35platforms. And next one I can talk about
- 6:38there's there is a threat of social in this one, but this one
- 6:43is tilted more towards the medium that you connect with
- 6:47consumers. So specifically it's about the
- 6:50rise of sort of the, the video driven type of connections.
- 6:56So you know it, it plays out in different ways.
- 7:00So it could be shoppable video, it could be live streams,
- 7:05obviously they could be hosted on social media, but also it
- 7:09goes beyond that because they could be on retailer sites and
- 7:11brand sites and whatnot. So this trend is, it's based on
- 7:17the notion that when we think about different medians meeting
- 7:21medians, mediums of consumers obviously engage more when it
- 7:28comes to video, you know, that's deemed more engaging than words
- 7:33or or photos or whatnot. And in our data, consumers
- 7:38report streaming videos at least weekly of 71% of the population.
- 7:45So, you know, this is an activity they do frequently and
- 7:50this is, you know, becoming more powerful, more impactful, you
- 7:55know, in the retail and in e-commerce sphere where we're
- 8:00seeing, you know, retailers, brands, social media operators
- 8:04leveraging this more fully. I think of an example, obviously
- 8:09I'm in the US and one of the examples I think about a lot,
- 8:13Amazon is clearly doing different things in this where
- 8:16they have the Amazon Live programme, you know, the live
- 8:19streaming. Obviously, they haven't found
- 8:22the success like an Alibaba has because of our different
- 8:26cultures. They also launched what they
- 8:29call a shoppable channel called Fast on Prime Video.
- 8:34So it's more of a throwback to the QVC home shopping type of
- 8:39experiences that Americans would be more familiar with.
- 8:43And then, you know, another example from even Amazon is, you
- 8:48know, we have our NFL and they have been broadcasting during
- 8:52the regular season in games on Thursday night on Amazon Prime
- 8:57and during the commercials, they're all shoppable videos.
- 9:01So it was a really interesting experience.
- 9:04Obviously a different type of experience and watching the NFL
- 9:08on a CBS or NBC or something like that.
- 9:12Just because, you know, the commercialization, the
- 9:15commercials that are put to you as a consumer, you know, these
- 9:19are more interactive. You know, they're showing you
- 9:22products. There's AQR code, you scan the
- 9:24QR code, it's immediately going to the product page for Amazon.
- 9:28It's about that creating that more immersive experience
- 9:32online. Really there's benefits of
- 9:34shopping online, but there's there's something you miss
- 9:38versus in store shopping. So, you know, I think it's
- 9:41really about tapping into that, you know, more immersive, more
- 9:48dynamic type of experience. So, yeah, video LED, whether
- 9:51it's, you know, a recorded video that, you know, they've now made
- 9:55shoppable or if it's live streaming.
- 9:58Certainly live streaming has been fairly strong coming out of
- 10:02China, you know, five years ago really.
- 10:05But it's been slower in the West, But we're seeing more and
- 10:09more traction around that kind of idea.
- 10:12So we really wanted to highlight, you know, the
- 10:14importance of this medium and how it's being leveraged to
- 10:18connect with shoppers. It feels like one of those music
- 10:21countdowns. And on to #4.
- 10:27And this one shifts gears. It's there's no real social
- 10:31element. I think it's one of the more,
- 10:34it's one of the more interesting ones to me.
- 10:37And this is where we speak about these low cost platforms that
- 10:41are really gaining traction. So obviously this ties into, you
- 10:47know, the the cost of living crisis that consumers continue
- 10:51to navigate and, and seeking out budget friendly options.
- 10:56And over the last, this is the third year, we've had a trend
- 11:01that related to this budget crisis and consumers, you know,
- 11:06using digital tools to find deals, root out the best deals,
- 11:11even, you know, finding dupes, that kind of thing, how they
- 11:15might use digital platforms. But this one, you know, goes to
- 11:19the idea of these these players that have rose to prominence.
- 11:24You know, we think some of that obviously it's, you know, I
- 11:28think partially driven from this budget mindset, but you also
- 11:32have consumers that have become more comfortable shopping
- 11:35online. For some consumers, you know,
- 11:38they've been doing this for 2025 years, maybe some are newer to
- 11:42the game. And you know, I think in the
- 11:44early days when some of these platforms came out of China
- 11:48several years ago, there was concerns about the quality of
- 11:52the products. But obviously we're seeing
- 11:55consumers, you know, more comfortable with ordering from
- 11:58some of these, we call them Chinese affiliated websites.
- 12:01Obviously some of them have shifted where their headquarters
- 12:05are to to establish that or make that disconnection, I suppose.
- 12:10But yeah, they're, you know, clearly players like Timu have
- 12:13have rose to prominence of Xi'an TikTok shop.
- 12:18And then you do have others, you know, other established players.
- 12:22Marketplaces. Aliexpress.
- 12:24Yeah, yeah, long established, but I'm thinking even like an
- 12:28Amazon opening their Amazon Hall launching mat and no.
- 12:33Congee are absolutely yes. Yeah.
- 12:35And then you have a player like Zalando that has, you know, an
- 12:39off price platform as well called Lounge where it has
- 12:45heavily discounted products. So, you know, players, you know,
- 12:49obviously Amazon is somewhat, I think more, more mirroring what
- 12:55these other players are doing. 1 like Zalando obviously has a
- 12:59thread, a platform that they're looking to do.
- 13:02But then you also have other players like we talked about H&M
- 13:06on our report from the standpoint that you know is Zara
- 13:10and H&M are facing a lot of competition from the likes of
- 13:13Sheen and and you know, fast fashion.
- 13:17And really both Zara and H&M have dug their heels in and
- 13:22tried to sort of adjust their messaging to consumers.
- 13:26So you know, Zara has made a lot of store upgrades, H&M is
- 13:31starting to do that. And to some degree both are
- 13:34trying to elevate who they are and what their position is to
- 13:39justify their their perhaps higher cost versus shooting
- 13:44products. Yeah, I've heard that.
- 13:46I heard that someone at one of the keynote NRF was talking
- 13:51about how actually it was the lady, the CEO of Rent the
- 13:55Runway. She was the one talking about
- 13:57how Mango Zara have all you know, their, their quality of
- 14:02their garments are getting better because they they have to
- 14:06differentiate in, in a really competitive market.
- 14:09OK, I I hope I don't sound like a radio disc jockey.
- 14:13And in a #5 we have. Yeah, of course, no trends list
- 14:20is complete without a mention of AI.
- 14:24So last year we did look at Jen AI and how it was coming into
- 14:29retail in different ways, you know, as one of the technologies
- 14:34that it was creating a more more immersive is coming to mind is
- 14:39that's not the right word that I'm thinking of a more intuitive
- 14:43was what we call intuitive e-commerce, a more intuitive
- 14:46experience. So we're taking a look at Jenny
- 14:49I again this year is specifically the agents and
- 14:54those type of developments. Obviously, you know, the agents
- 14:59and theory should help with creating a more sort of like
- 15:02complete experience and connecting the dots across, you
- 15:07know, different operations and such and you know, have a
- 15:11potential to to really have an impact in retail experiences.
- 15:17I got you. What what stands out for you in
- 15:20terms of the the five trends? What was the what was the thing
- 15:24that surprised you about it? Yeah, I think this year I would
- 15:29say we leaned in harder on social media than we have in
- 15:33past. In past we might have, I would
- 15:37say we would definitely have one, maybe two that touched on
- 15:40social. So I think it it likely just
- 15:43speaks the fact that social media is playing a more
- 15:45prominent role in in e-commerce type of transactions.
- 15:50Obviously it's, you know, really the cornerstone of how, you
- 15:54know, brands and retailers connect with their shoppers.
- 15:57So so that being one of them. So we've just had that
- 16:00unfortunately small little technical problem where we've
- 16:02lost the image from Michelle, but she's still there.
- 16:07So Michelle, with that, I'd like to say thank you.
- 16:09Thank you for sharing those digital trends with us and look
- 16:14forward to seeing you hopefully at one of the major conferences.
- 16:18Yeah. Thank you.
- 16:19It's been great to share these with your audience and
- 16:24appreciate the conversation and look forward to connecting with
- 16:27Person in 2025.
