- 0:17Speaker 1: It's not who we are, you know. I mean these guys, coaches,
- 0:20Speaker 1: players have worked too hard during the week. And listen,
- 0:24Speaker 1: you know that's a good that's a good defense. It's
- 0:26Speaker 1: a really good defense, probably one of the best in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the league. And if there's a measuring stick, then then
- 0:32Speaker 1: we didn't. We didn't measure up very well today and
- 0:35Speaker 1: something we got to look at and uh, there's too much.
- 0:40Speaker 1: There's too much talent, I think. I mean, there's just
- 0:43Speaker 1: there's signs of it, but just not not consistent enough.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Welcome to jag Zam this Monday, and Kennannie Stevens, Brian Sexton,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and John Osier are with me today. We have a
- 0:53Speaker 2: whole lot to talk about an absolutely disastrous home opener
- 0:56Speaker 2: for the Jags as they fall to the Browns yesterday.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Big thing number one, when range it.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Pours, that applies to the weather and it applies the
- 1:03Speaker 2: way this football team is playing right now.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Trevor Lawrence tried to sum things up.
- 1:07Speaker 4: I mean, we suck right now. So I don't pretty shocked.
- 1:11Speaker 4: You know, obviously this isn't We had a great off season,
- 1:13Speaker 4: great training camp, and we gotta figure it out. So
- 1:18Speaker 4: we know we we we got a good group. We
- 1:19Speaker 4: got good players and it can be a good, really
- 1:21Speaker 4: good offense, but clearly we're not. So everybody's gotta take accountability.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Oh accountability, look in the mirror and fix it. You know,
- 1:30Speaker 4: I I gotta play better. And the leader of this offense,
- 1:32Speaker 4: it's tell me. You know, if a white else gott
- 1:36Speaker 4: play better, the lines got play better, run MEAs gott
- 1:37Speaker 4: play better. Got to coach better. Mean's everybody, honestly, but
- 1:42Speaker 4: you know we're standing around. We gotta take we gotta
- 1:45Speaker 4: take charge or standing around waiting on somebody to make
- 1:47Speaker 4: a play. Defense is playing their ass off the last
- 1:49Speaker 4: two weeks. If if the team doesn't score more than
- 1:51Speaker 4: twenty points in US we should win every week. We
- 1:54Speaker 4: can't finish in the red zone today. Too many mistakes
- 1:57Speaker 4: now in and out the huddle communication will be good.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I mean, it's just it's a lot of things and
- 2:03Speaker 4: you know, fortunately and unfortunately it's what fishes you off
- 2:05Speaker 4: after they had a lot of it. We control but
- 2:08Speaker 4: you know we control it, but we're not doing it right.
- 2:09Speaker 4: So until we do it right, it's a it's a
- 2:11Speaker 4: different story.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So Brian had to let Trevor sound off a little
- 2:16Speaker 2: bit there because he touched on a lot of it.
- 2:18Speaker 2: It was everything yesterday. It wasn't just one thing. We
- 2:20Speaker 2: can complain about one thing, but it was a lot
- 2:22Speaker 2: of things.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Yeah, it felt kay like I was watching last year's
- 2:25Speaker 5: home opener against Kansas City, where the defense played well enough,
- 2:28Speaker 5: in fact, ironic, they held Kansas City to eighteen points,
- 2:31Speaker 5: the same amount that the Brown scored yesterday, and the
- 2:34Speaker 5: offense was just maniacally painfully difficult to watch. And it
- 2:39Speaker 5: was it was so many different things. This offense is
- 2:45Speaker 5: supposed to be, if not explosive, effective productive. They put
- 2:50Speaker 5: the weapons in place, They talked about the offensive line
- 2:53Speaker 5: being better, and they were during the preseason in training camp.
- 2:56Speaker 5: You felt like this was ready to take a step forward.
- 2:59Speaker 5: And I'm not saying Evan Ingram not playing. I don't
- 3:02Speaker 5: believe that that was that significant of an issue. They
- 3:06Speaker 5: should have been able to overcome it. In fact, you
- 3:08Speaker 5: saw Brenton Strange step up and make a couple of
- 3:10Speaker 5: catches and they used lu Ferrell as well. So, man,
- 3:14Speaker 5: the list is long. The complaint list is long today
- 3:17Speaker 5: for an offense that the defense is played pretty well
- 3:20Speaker 5: two weeks in a row. They were't perfect. They didn't
- 3:21Speaker 5: get any turnovers for the second straight week. But when
- 3:24Speaker 5: you hold a team to eighteen points, damn, you should
- 3:28Speaker 5: be able to score more than that with an offense
- 3:30Speaker 5: that was built John to be able to do more
- 3:32Speaker 5: than that.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Yeah, the defense played well enough.
- 3:35Speaker 7: I also in watching the game this morning, and the
- 3:39Speaker 7: defense allowed the Browns to be on the field for
- 3:41Speaker 7: twenty minutes in the first half, which really allowed the
- 3:43Speaker 7: Browns to be in control.
- 3:45Speaker 6: Of the game.
- 3:46Speaker 7: They had like twenty three to twenty four plays long drive.
- 3:49Speaker 7: So yes, the defense was good enough. I think the
- 3:52Speaker 7: defense would tell you we can't let the Browns own
- 3:55Speaker 7: the game the way it felt like they did.
- 3:58Speaker 6: I was encouraged by Trevor. Uh. I'll have more to
- 4:02Speaker 6: say about that later in the show. Uh.
- 4:04Speaker 7: He was mad for a reason. He's the one who
- 4:07Speaker 7: has to stand up there every week. He's the one
- 4:09Speaker 7: who has to take the heat, and I get that
- 4:10Speaker 7: he's paid well to do it. But beyond that, he
- 4:14Speaker 7: yesterday really showed the kind of emotion leadership whatever. After
- 4:20Speaker 7: the game, he's tired of it. Uh, fans are tired
- 4:23Speaker 7: of Everybody should be tired of it.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Uh. I thought going into this game it was.
- 4:28Speaker 7: A big game, because I I thought, really good teams
- 4:31Speaker 7: come out and show what they are in week two.
- 4:34Speaker 6: Jarwards aren't really good right now.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's true we suck right now. According to Trevor, at
- 4:38Speaker 2: least our second big thing today is gonna be.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Take your shot, Brian.
- 4:42Speaker 2: We talked about what Brian Thomas Junior has done in
- 4:44Speaker 2: the season opener. You only have four targets yesterday. How
- 4:48Speaker 2: do you get him more involved in this offense? Does
- 4:49Speaker 2: it just come down to the offensive line couldn't give
- 4:51Speaker 2: Trevor enough time.
- 4:52Speaker 3: To find him?
- 4:52Speaker 2: Or do you need to force the ball to Brian
- 4:54Speaker 2: Thomas Junior a little bit more?
- 4:55Speaker 5: Brian? Uh, listen, I've always i I kind of scoffed
- 5:00Speaker 5: at the idea of making it about play calling all
- 5:01Speaker 5: of the time. But philosophically speaking, let's get the ball
- 5:04Speaker 5: down the field. I mean, why did they wait so
- 5:07Speaker 5: long to even take a shot? They were the first
- 5:10Speaker 5: drive right they're putting the ball sideways and running it again.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I don't want to say, because I've always believed that
- 5:16Speaker 5: a good play is one that works in a bad
- 5:18Speaker 5: play is one that doesn't an execution. But philosophically speaking,
- 5:21Speaker 5: why did it seem like they waited until the middle
- 5:25Speaker 5: to the end of the third quarter to send the
- 5:28Speaker 5: ball down the field and at least send the message
- 5:29Speaker 5: to the Browns. Fred Taylor and I were talking yesterday.
- 5:33Speaker 5: It's really easy to play safety against a defense a
- 5:36Speaker 5: pardon me for a defense against an offense that they're
- 5:39Speaker 5: not sending the ball deep. You just know everything's in
- 5:41Speaker 5: front of you. You don't have to worry about it.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Let's make him worry a little bit. Send it deep.
- 5:45Speaker 5: The catch that that kid made is the all pro
- 5:48Speaker 5: kind of catch that we've been waiting to see from
- 5:49Speaker 5: a receiver.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Here.
- 5:50Speaker 5: He's I was wrong about. I thought he was going
- 5:53Speaker 5: to be a good draft pick. He's a great looking
- 5:55Speaker 5: draft pick.
- 5:56Speaker 6: Use him.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Send the ball, make it easier for everyone underneath.
- 5:59Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm sure we'll see Bryan Thomas Junior is playing
- 6:01Speaker 7: the highlights. But it was otherworldly acceleration that I want
- 6:05Speaker 7: to see a few guys ever do that in thirty
- 6:07Speaker 7: years covering the league. Yeah, they've got to throw down
- 6:10Speaker 7: feel a little more. I think early on and early
- 6:13Speaker 7: on in the season, they've been trying to let things
- 6:16Speaker 7: happen organically. They didn't run poorly yesterday. They ran the
- 6:20Speaker 7: way you run in the NFL, which is they got
- 6:22Speaker 7: yards in spots. They had some losses, but overall you felt,
- 6:26Speaker 7: or I felt the whole game like they were able
- 6:28Speaker 7: to run well enough at some point, though, this offense
- 6:34Speaker 7: does need to.
- 6:36Speaker 6: Not always sort of let it come to him.
- 6:38Speaker 7: You saw the benefit of taking shots when you've got
- 6:41Speaker 7: a guy like BTJ and frankly Gabe Davis. Those two
- 6:44Speaker 7: guys we talked about vertical shots all off season.
- 6:48Speaker 6: I think they do need to take a few.
- 6:50Speaker 7: More and maybe not let it always happen organically, which
- 6:53Speaker 7: is the way they like to.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Run this offense.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Our final big thing today is going to be how
- 6:57Speaker 2: about a stop? John You mentioned it a little bit.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Played well, but they could play better. A lot of
- 7:02Speaker 2: it was possession time. When you have the Browns chewing
- 7:05Speaker 2: up a whole drive, nine minute long drive to get
- 7:07Speaker 2: that touchdown. It reminded me a little bit of last
- 7:09Speaker 2: year when it was kind of Ben don't break in
- 7:11Speaker 2: the sense of, yeah, they're not playing bad, but we
- 7:13Speaker 2: need them to play a little bit differently, maybe a
- 7:15Speaker 2: turnover something like that to get the ball back, because
- 7:19Speaker 2: I felt there was a lot of blame that could
- 7:20Speaker 2: go around to everyone on the team.
- 7:22Speaker 7: Yeah, look, I'm not considering say the defense played bad.
- 7:25Speaker 7: They didn't play bad, and absolutely, when you give up
- 7:27Speaker 7: eighteen in the NFL, that's good enough to win. In
- 7:31Speaker 7: the first it felt, though, like the Browns were able
- 7:34Speaker 7: to keep that game the way they wanted to play it.
- 7:37Speaker 7: They were fine with a low scoring game once they
- 7:40Speaker 7: got up. Once they were up thirteen to three, I
- 7:42Speaker 7: think I'm sure if I'm on the Browns coaching staff,
- 7:45Speaker 7: I'm understandably saying, all right, I'm up. I'm up thirteen
- 7:50Speaker 7: to three, sixteen to three, even sixteen to ten late
- 7:53Speaker 7: in the game, I'm gonna take my chances. This team
- 7:55Speaker 7: hasn't moved the ball well all day, they probably won't
- 7:58Speaker 7: move well late. So I think that was sort of
- 8:00Speaker 7: the Browns. They had the upper hand. They were okay
- 8:03Speaker 7: to play that way because they had the upper hand.
- 8:06Speaker 7: And in the first half there was just a couple
- 8:09Speaker 7: of instances where you felt like the Jaguars defense could
- 8:12Speaker 7: have gotten them off the field when they didn't. But overall,
- 8:15Speaker 7: i mean, look, it was a good day for the
- 8:17Speaker 7: defense overall.
- 8:18Speaker 5: But it was they didn't get quite enough pressure, right,
- 8:20Speaker 5: I mean, you're talking about backup offensive tackles, and at
- 8:23Speaker 5: one point they had the third team tackle in on
- 8:25Speaker 5: the right side, and the Jaguars still couldn't affect the
- 8:29Speaker 5: quarterback enough. There were moments where you would see Josh
- 8:32Speaker 5: Allen or Trey Von Walker or Eric Armstead getting towards
- 8:35Speaker 5: the quarterback, and then Deshaun Watson would do what he
- 8:38Speaker 5: always seems to do against this team, and you know,
- 8:40Speaker 5: shuffle his feet and get free and stay alive enough
- 8:42Speaker 5: to make a play. I mean, that's gonna happen. They
- 8:45Speaker 5: didn't get a turnover for the second straight week. That
- 8:48Speaker 5: has to change. Imagine if they had been able to.
- 8:52Speaker 5: They forced them to punch John five times in six
- 8:55Speaker 5: second half possessions. They got the ball back for the
- 8:57Speaker 5: offense twice in the last two minutes. And yet if
- 9:02Speaker 5: maybe they had gotten turnover when the ball was there
- 9:04Speaker 5: for them to take, perhaps they get the ball a
- 9:07Speaker 5: short field and they can go down and make something happen.
- 9:09Speaker 5: The defense played well enough to win, there's obviously a
- 9:12Speaker 5: lot of room for them to play at a much
- 9:13Speaker 5: higher level. I'm sure we'll hear that from Ryan Nielsen
- 9:16Speaker 5: when he talks later this week.
- 9:18Speaker 2: All right, coming up after the break Here on Jagsam,
- 9:20Speaker 2: we're going to look back at the tape and tell
- 9:21Speaker 2: you what we saw yesterday. Jaguars Fans, register your furry

- 9:40Speaker 1: To sign up today, Well, I'm at a loss because
- 9:47Speaker 1: we've been together for a while now, right, and we
- 9:54Speaker 1: shouldn't be we shouldn't be playing the way we're playing.
- 9:57Speaker 1: We shouldn't be coaching the way we're coaching. So I
- 9:59Speaker 1: take accountability, you know there, and it starts with me,
- 10:03Speaker 1: so and then and then it goes to you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: then goes to the assistant coaches and players. But I
- 10:12Speaker 1: just know that we're just we're we're a better football
- 10:16Speaker 1: team than what we played today.
- 10:20Speaker 2: BT Karen jag Dam. This morning, we're gonna look at
- 10:22Speaker 2: some of the tape from yesterday. I'm not gonna call
- 10:24Speaker 2: it highlights because not all of it is, but some
- 10:26Speaker 2: good things, but other things they need to work on.
- 10:28Speaker 2: So We talked a lot about Deshaun Watson, what that
- 10:30Speaker 2: matchup was going to be, not letting Deshaun Watson turn
- 10:32Speaker 2: back into old Deshaun Watson. But they had trouble wrapping
- 10:35Speaker 2: him up. He got sacked six times the week before,
- 10:37Speaker 2: only got to him about twice, got around him a lot.
- 10:40Speaker 2: But then he did Deshaun Watson. Things started rolling out
- 10:42Speaker 2: and doing all kinds of stuff.
- 10:44Speaker 5: This is the play that drove me absolutely crazy. There
- 10:47Speaker 5: are defenders all around, they're looking at Watson. I mean,
- 10:52Speaker 5: if there's just a situational awareness, there's somebody can blow
- 10:55Speaker 5: up the guy with the ball or make.
- 10:58Speaker 2: The interception right to go for it, you gotta get it.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And then setting up plays like this.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Where right there, but they're not there.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And I know he's elusive, but we haven't seen a
- 11:07Speaker 2: ton of that from him recently. So to not be
- 11:10Speaker 2: able to get home against the Seawan Watson definitely let
- 11:13Speaker 2: these drives continue.
- 11:15Speaker 7: It felt like the closest they came to a turnover
- 11:18Speaker 7: yesterday was here. You know, one thing with a player
- 11:22Speaker 7: like Shawn Watson, when you have a mobile guy. The
- 11:25Speaker 7: Jaguars have a few really really good pass rushers. Their
- 11:29Speaker 7: issue last year, and I don't want to call it
- 11:31Speaker 7: an issue yet this year we haven't seen enough was
- 11:33Speaker 7: that sometimes they didn't rush in what you might call waves.
- 11:38Speaker 7: One guy getting through against a guy like Watson, you
- 11:41Speaker 7: have to have pressure sort of everywhere to contain it.
- 11:44Speaker 7: They weren't great there last year. I don't really want
- 11:47Speaker 7: to say they're not great at that this year, but
- 11:49Speaker 7: they didn't.
- 11:49Speaker 6: They didn't get that yesterday.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Well, if I watched and I felt the same thing,
- 11:52Speaker 5: and Ryan Neilson could probably come in here and tell
- 11:54Speaker 5: us what the defense is designed to do, and maybe
- 11:56Speaker 5: there's someone else. But there were a couple of times
- 11:58Speaker 5: where Trayvonn and Eric Armsta both got pushed inside right,
- 12:02Speaker 5: the rush took them inside and they gave up containment.
- 12:05Speaker 5: You have to with a guy like Watson, you got
- 12:08Speaker 5: to keep him in the pocket.
- 12:10Speaker 6: Period.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Really, let's look at one of the Jaguar's offensive possessions.
- 12:13Speaker 2: There's a lot of frustration we saw on different drives
- 12:16Speaker 2: throughout the day with them, but just Trevor not having
- 12:19Speaker 2: a ton of time letting things to let things develop
- 12:23Speaker 2: down the field, which is we want to see more
- 12:25Speaker 2: vertical offense.
- 12:26Speaker 3: But he didn't have a ton of time to do that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: He almost picked there and then Trevor getting a little frustrated,
- 12:31Speaker 2: think this when he rips off the run here after this.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But it is it just the offensive line? Is there
- 12:38Speaker 2: more than that? Is it the play calling? Is it
- 12:40Speaker 2: all the things combined here?
- 12:43Speaker 7: Well, it's hard to say line didn't play great yesterday
- 12:47Speaker 7: in some really key spots.
- 12:48Speaker 6: I mean again, maybe they seemed to run.
- 12:51Speaker 7: Block well, but there were it feel it felt to me,
- 12:55Speaker 7: even if we watched the game, there were too many
- 12:57Speaker 7: sort of Katie by the door, maybe Katie barre the
- 12:59Speaker 7: door moments where you knew you needed to play. They
- 13:02Speaker 7: got some good protection at times. They get some good
- 13:04Speaker 7: protection on the long pass. He had some moments where
- 13:09Speaker 7: he had time and didn't convert it. But in some
- 13:12Speaker 7: big moments even the safety didn't feel like realistically it
- 13:17Speaker 7: was time for him to set up.
- 13:18Speaker 5: No, And look, this is a great fight, right, I mean,
- 13:21Speaker 5: we know who is it. Darius Smith on the other
- 13:23Speaker 5: side of Miles Garrett is really really good. I wouldn't
- 13:27Speaker 5: be surprised if the question isn't asked, and if they're
- 13:29Speaker 5: not talking about it in their own rooms this week
- 13:31Speaker 5: about making a couple of changes on the offensive line.
- 13:33Speaker 5: You can do it. You've got two guys in Walker
- 13:36Speaker 5: Little and Cooper Hodges that you could put into the
- 13:40Speaker 5: lineup that I at least think might make you better.
- 13:44Speaker 5: And you're going up to Buffalo where you've got von
- 13:46Speaker 5: Miller and Ed Oliver and Gregor ru Rousseau. So you're
- 13:48Speaker 5: going to see another really good defensive line that gets
- 13:52Speaker 5: pressure on the quarterback. Ask the Dolphins right about the
- 13:55Speaker 5: pressure that the Bill's brought on Thursday night football. I
- 13:58Speaker 5: would be thinking, normally, John, you can't make changes to
- 14:02Speaker 5: the offensive line. You just don't have enough guys. You
- 14:04Speaker 5: have them here, I would be thinking about that.
- 14:06Speaker 7: Now I'm with you, and I usually am not changed
- 14:11Speaker 7: for the sake of change, guy, but this feels like
- 14:14Speaker 7: you need to try something.
- 14:15Speaker 5: First series of the third quarter, Cam Robinson gave up
- 14:18Speaker 5: the pressure on two of those three drags, go three
- 14:20Speaker 5: and out, blunting any sort of you know, early momentum
- 14:23Speaker 5: in the second half. That was when I just started thinking, well, okay,
- 14:26Speaker 5: maybe it's time for walking a little to get an opportunity.
- 14:28Speaker 2: A couple of the sacks on Trevor. I'm not against
- 14:32Speaker 2: the changes. I'm open to changes as well, But some
- 14:35Speaker 2: of it's got to be philosophy as well. They do
- 14:36Speaker 2: some of these plays designed where they're trying to pull
- 14:38Speaker 2: people and they go over to pull and then the
- 14:41Speaker 2: person's running right by them right there. That's strategic things
- 14:44Speaker 2: as well, right, So that's coaching. We talked a lot
- 14:47Speaker 2: about that. So even with the changes, if they're still
- 14:49Speaker 2: trying to do this, is that going to help?
- 14:51Speaker 5: You're right, You're right. All of that has to be evaluated,
- 14:54Speaker 5: and perhaps someone else in the lineup gives you the
- 14:57Speaker 5: strength and the fortitude to be able to go ahead change.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I gotta get him looked. Yeah, Yeah, that's the job. Yeah.
- 15:05Speaker 7: Uh so, But I don't blame but that one.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I mean, he gave up the sack. That's a great
- 15:11Speaker 5: player who made a great play.
- 15:13Speaker 7: It happened, yeah, I And all of this should be
- 15:16Speaker 7: couched by I think the fact they played poorly in
- 15:19Speaker 7: the second half against Miami. The Browns are capable of
- 15:23Speaker 7: this kind of a game against a high functioning offense.
- 15:26Speaker 7: Uh The issue for the Jaguars yesterday, from what everybody
- 15:29Speaker 7: said after.
- 15:29Speaker 6: The game, it was not high functioning.
- 15:31Speaker 7: You could see it when you are having delay of
- 15:33Speaker 7: game or the potential delay of game penalties, the clunkiness,
- 15:37Speaker 7: and it was clunky at times, waiting until the last
- 15:40Speaker 7: second before you get a snap.
- 15:42Speaker 6: Uh.
- 15:42Speaker 7: This was not a high functioning offense yesterday, and when
- 15:45Speaker 7: you do it against the Browns, then you've got real trouble.
- 15:47Speaker 5: But that offensive line performance yesterday made me feel like
- 15:50Speaker 5: that San Francisco game last November, where it was it
- 15:53Speaker 5: felt like Katie barred the door at all times. It wasn't.
- 15:56Speaker 5: I know, we had the chance to get it off,
- 15:58Speaker 5: but it just didn't feel like they were able to
- 15:59Speaker 5: shet the tempo up front, that they were able to
- 16:02Speaker 5: control the line of scrimmage. And if you can't get
- 16:05Speaker 5: that done, you got to consider options.
- 16:08Speaker 2: My highlight from yesterday, at least I'm sure most peoples
- 16:11Speaker 2: Brian Thomas Junior are just making an impeccable, amazing, exemplary,
- 16:16Speaker 2: whatever adjective you want to use, catch here. And it
- 16:20Speaker 2: just feels like you want so much more from him.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And I know there's a lot of factors that go
- 16:23Speaker 2: into getting him involved in the offense, but just you
- 16:26Speaker 2: gotta get this guy the ball more.
- 16:28Speaker 3: When he can do stuff like this.
- 16:30Speaker 7: Don't You don't want to necessarily go overboard and overload early,
- 16:38Speaker 7: so meaning don't ask him to do things outside of
- 16:42Speaker 7: his position so that he gets confused, because right now
- 16:45Speaker 7: he is playing at a high level. So I think
- 16:47Speaker 7: that is the other side of what we're talking about.
- 16:50Speaker 7: But he is playing so well think about it. All
- 16:54Speaker 7: of their touchdown drives, which is three, have come when
- 16:57Speaker 7: he has made a big play. He is the the
- 17:01Speaker 7: moment maker of the offense right now, So you need
- 17:04Speaker 7: to do something within what he understands right now and
- 17:07Speaker 7: what he's comfortable with to get in the ball more.
- 17:10Speaker 7: I don't necessarily think you need to move him around
- 17:12Speaker 7: and confuse him yet keep the trajectory going.
- 17:15Speaker 6: But I mean, if we're talking positives, Brian, yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 7: Oh he's this kid looks and I'm gonna play sacrilege
- 17:23Speaker 7: a little bit, the same feeling about him as I
- 17:26Speaker 7: did in ninety eight with Fred. Yeah, I'm not saying
- 17:29Speaker 7: I think Fred's a Hall of Fame player and an
- 17:31Speaker 7: all timer, but he's doing things that catch yesterday was
- 17:34Speaker 7: acceleration on a level where you go, oh, this is
- 17:38Speaker 7: all pro stuff.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Listen.
- 17:39Speaker 5: I get it, and I love Fred and I hold
- 17:41Speaker 5: him in the highest esteem.
- 17:42Speaker 6: Fred told Fred yesterday that this kid was better.
- 17:44Speaker 5: No, because he's not, but maybe he grows in that
- 17:49Speaker 5: kind of player. Fred didn't break out until it's third game, Right,
- 17:52Speaker 5: Fred didn't get into to make a play until James
- 17:55Speaker 5: Stuart went down, and of course the first hand off
- 17:57Speaker 5: he takes fifty three yards per a touchdown and we
- 17:58Speaker 5: got okay, we know what we got here. Look, I'm
- 18:02Speaker 5: not asking him to do anything that he can't do, right,
- 18:04Speaker 5: I'm not asking promotion. I'm saying, hey, why not try
- 18:07Speaker 5: that play on the first play of the game and
- 18:08Speaker 5: send the messages, right, send the message. This is who
- 18:11Speaker 5: we are and this is who we do. I appreciate
- 18:15Speaker 5: the fact because I'm an old school guy that Doug
- 18:17Speaker 5: wants to be able to run the ball. But I
- 18:19Speaker 5: also understand that Doug is not to run the ball guy. First, right,
- 18:22Speaker 5: Doug wants to throw the ball. It's modern football, and
- 18:26Speaker 5: he came in here and talked about not necessarily wanting
- 18:29Speaker 5: to run the ball thirty times a game. Right, he
- 18:30Speaker 5: wants to be able to throw it. Man. All I'm
- 18:32Speaker 5: saying is send the message, this kid could beat you.
- 18:35Speaker 5: You better be a little bit deeper. It'll open things up.
- 18:38Speaker 4: I don't.
- 18:38Speaker 5: I'm over simplifying, but you get my point absolutely.
- 18:42Speaker 6: And one final thought on VTJ.
- 18:46Speaker 7: You're in this league enough that it's hard for young
- 18:50Speaker 7: players to do things consistently where you say, oh, this
- 18:59Speaker 7: is a better foot ball player, then the guy's on
- 19:01Speaker 7: the other side. Right, he's done that twice in two
- 19:04Speaker 7: weeks now, the bomb yesterday and then the touchdown and
- 19:09Speaker 7: even beaten Jalen last week.
- 19:11Speaker 6: He's doing stuff that.
- 19:15Speaker 7: High end veterans have trouble doing on a week to
- 19:18Speaker 7: week basis. He's making special plays and everything you hear
- 19:22Speaker 7: about him. Also, the positive of all this is he's
- 19:26Speaker 7: a really good worker, really good teammate, really smart player.
- 19:31Speaker 7: This is not just athletic flash stuff we're seeing. This
- 19:33Speaker 7: is something this kid's going to build on.
- 19:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Also an injection of life into the game, right, it
- 19:38Speaker 2: felt like it was dead at that point. And to
- 19:40Speaker 2: see that bring the energy into the offense a little bit,
- 19:43Speaker 2: you like, okay, like get a touchdown here, we can
- 19:45Speaker 2: do something with this which you're searching for from anybody else,
- 19:48Speaker 2: and you're getting it from your rookie.
- 19:50Speaker 7: And he's a funny kind of I mean, he's probably
- 19:52Speaker 7: the best kind of confidence in this sense because he's
- 19:55Speaker 7: show it at all in camp and then all of
- 19:57Speaker 7: a sudden when he makes plays can tell there's certain
- 20:02Speaker 7: ways guys walk on the field when they know they belong.
- 20:06Speaker 7: Once they figure out, and it's a hard league to
- 20:08Speaker 7: belong in. This kid knows he belongs.
- 20:11Speaker 5: It's early, but he is special. It's just going to
- 20:14Speaker 5: be how special does he want to be? And can
- 20:17Speaker 5: they get him the bowl enough so everyone sees that?
- 20:19Speaker 3: Absolutely?
- 20:20Speaker 2: All right, A couple more things I just want to
- 20:21Speaker 2: talk through and then we'll get moving things along. That
- 20:25Speaker 2: Kirk touchdown they got called off because the penalties. Brian,
- 20:27Speaker 2: We've talked so much about the little things that need
- 20:29Speaker 2: to get done.
- 20:31Speaker 3: It's just an extra frustration.
- 20:32Speaker 2: And Trevor talked about it as well on that SoundBite
- 20:34Speaker 2: we heard off the top.
- 20:35Speaker 3: It's stuff you canvix.
- 20:36Speaker 5: I got to hold off because it's my hot tech.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Okay, well real quick.
- 20:40Speaker 7: What's too bad about that is de Earnest is a
- 20:42Speaker 7: guy who's a very aware of player, a very smart player.
- 20:45Speaker 3: I don't even think it's on him. Sometimes it's like
- 20:47Speaker 3: play gets changed.
- 20:48Speaker 7: I know it's knew at the moment there was a
- 20:51Speaker 7: shot of him reacting to it. He knew exactly what
- 20:53Speaker 7: had happened, and it was sort of like what Trevor
- 20:55Speaker 7: said in the post game. Everybody on the offense had
- 20:58Speaker 7: one play that sort of.
- 21:00Speaker 6: Cost him a little bit.
- 21:01Speaker 7: It's the old say, if you've been around the leaue no,
- 21:03Speaker 7: if you hear it all the time when teams are
- 21:05Speaker 7: going bad, that's usually the storyline when there's one little
- 21:09Speaker 7: thing each guy does all day.
- 21:11Speaker 2: And then just finally that safety at the very end there.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I know they get the ball back after that cut to.
- 21:15Speaker 5: The defense, but it turned the game.
- 21:18Speaker 3: It of course it did.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Well if you don't have that well, also the punt
- 21:20Speaker 2: to get it down to the two or the one
- 21:22Speaker 2: or whatever they're on that was insane.
- 21:23Speaker 5: As well the goal line and went backwards.
- 21:26Speaker 7: Well, this is not a knock on Cam the little things.
- 21:29Speaker 7: He is a wonderful young kicker, jointed off the upright.
- 21:33Speaker 7: But if you don't have a chance to tie later
- 21:36Speaker 7: different thing.
- 21:37Speaker 5: But if you listen, if you don't take that safety
- 21:40Speaker 5: right there, sure you have a chance to go later
- 21:42Speaker 5: in the game at the thirty yard line with eight
- 21:44Speaker 5: seconds left and kick a game tye field goal. As
- 21:47Speaker 5: opposed to being down by five. So I mean, if
- 21:50Speaker 5: this is that situational awareness, hey man, we just need
- 21:53Speaker 5: a field goal. Let's be smart here.
- 21:55Speaker 7: When teams lose and struggle, you know people who talk
- 21:59Speaker 7: about them do the next day they talked about six
- 22:01Speaker 7: things that they could have done to win the game.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Quarterbacking.
- 22:05Speaker 7: No, I mean it's a league of little plays, and
- 22:08Speaker 7: the Jaguars miss and.
- 22:10Speaker 6: Blue a lot of little plays, yes for sure.
- 22:12Speaker 3: All right, that's it for the tape.
- 22:14Speaker 2: We'll be back after the break today to give you
- 22:15Speaker 2: our hot takes for the team going forward.
- 22:25Speaker 3: It was a freight move.
- 22:25Speaker 2: The freight Magellan Transport voted the coolest office space in Jacksonville.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Apply online at www dot midel and Logistics dot com.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And now we're gonna do our hot takes, presented by
- 22:36Speaker 2: Firehouse Today, brought to you by Firehouse Up.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's just just the situation, the situation awareness.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I mean, just clock was running down, and you know,
- 22:48Speaker 1: we just it can't happen. If it just can't happen,
- 22:53Speaker 1: so I had to take the two timeouts.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Situational awareness. Brian, We're gonna do our hot takes. I
- 22:59Speaker 2: know yours certainly involves.
- 23:00Speaker 5: That Yeah, lack of awareness kills And I wrote that
- 23:03Speaker 5: down after Antonio Johnson on that opening drive. No, no,
- 23:08Speaker 5: sorry that his was a little bit later in the
- 23:10Speaker 5: second quarter when he had missed on Deshaun Watson and
- 23:14Speaker 5: Deshaun Watson got rid of the ball and he came
- 23:16Speaker 5: up behind him with both hands out. You just you
- 23:19Speaker 5: just have to be smarter that he has to. No right,
- 23:21Speaker 5: I thought his awareness could have been better on that
- 23:23Speaker 5: play to round that Ronald Darby cut underneath. They gave
- 23:26Speaker 5: him on second and twenty, they gave him a first
- 23:28Speaker 5: down there to keep that drive alive. We mentioned ad
- 23:31Speaker 5: nauseam all of the timeout.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Issues, I mean games at the goal line, and it's
- 23:37Speaker 3: just then.
- 23:38Speaker 5: And then de Artist two again is a very good player.
- 23:40Speaker 5: And you know, you see some of his past protection
- 23:42Speaker 5: sets and you realize and some of his you know,
- 23:44Speaker 5: four or five yard runs yesterday, you realize he's a
- 23:46Speaker 5: valuable player. But the lack of awareness at times yesterday
- 23:52Speaker 5: is just maddening for this football team. The coach talked
- 23:55Speaker 5: about it, the quarterback talked about it. You gotta be
- 23:58Speaker 5: a smart football team, and yesterday, john they were not
- 24:02Speaker 5: a smart football team. They have got to dial that
- 24:04Speaker 5: situational awareness and I'm not gonna point my finger one
- 24:06Speaker 5: way or the other. Think it goes both ways. It's coaching,
- 24:09Speaker 5: it's playing it to all of that kind of stuff.
- 24:10Speaker 5: But yesterday there were a couple of moments on that
- 24:12Speaker 5: first long fifteen play drive in particular, where you could
- 24:15Speaker 5: have gotten them down. And I'm even talking about Devin
- 24:19Speaker 5: Lloyd's fifteen yard penalty because I thought that was really
- 24:21Speaker 5: a cheapie, right, But any winner of the quarterback saying,
- 24:26Speaker 5: situational awareness has got to improve for this football team.
- 24:29Speaker 7: Yeah, it's such a league of moments. And when you
- 24:32Speaker 7: watch it as intently as most people watching this or watching.
- 24:36Speaker 6: It intently think about it.
- 24:38Speaker 7: You know, you're off the field and say a third
- 24:40Speaker 7: and five and then you give them a first down.
- 24:43Speaker 7: Nine times is exaggeration, but nine times out of ten,
- 24:46Speaker 7: when you give a team a first down, they're getting
- 24:48Speaker 7: points in this league because you've you've done your job
- 24:51Speaker 7: and now you've given them second win. So every little thing,
- 24:57Speaker 7: missing a field goal all of a sudden, that's a
- 24:59Speaker 7: three point sway. I'm not trying to pile on Cam Little,
- 25:03Speaker 7: It's just that was in my mind, little situations nine
- 25:09Speaker 7: times out of tendeous league. When things are decided by
- 25:11Speaker 7: eight points, if you give away a little bit early,
- 25:15Speaker 7: it's going to cost you in the end. I went
- 25:18Speaker 7: with Trevor. Lawrence is mad, and that's a good thing.
- 25:21Speaker 7: We've mentioned a few times. I thought his press conference
- 25:24Speaker 7: his authority in the moment, I guess is what I'm
- 25:29Speaker 7: looking for. This has been growing. He's always been a
- 25:33Speaker 7: pois guy. After games, He's always felt like this is
- 25:35Speaker 7: his team. But to me yesterday it felt like he
- 25:38Speaker 7: was saying enough's enough. He's the guy who has to
- 25:41Speaker 7: go out there be the face of the franchise, and
- 25:44Speaker 7: I think he acted like it yesterday. My guess is
- 25:49Speaker 7: it's more than what we saw on the podium. He's
- 25:52Speaker 7: probably saying the people inside of the building, Hey, we
- 25:53Speaker 7: can't you know, this is not acceptable, it has to change.
- 25:59Speaker 7: And they're all words we've all heard before. So I
- 26:02Speaker 7: get people watching and saying, well, what's the difference. I
- 26:05Speaker 7: think the difference is it really sounded like Trevor. It's
- 26:10Speaker 7: to the point where you know what everybody's been saying
- 26:12Speaker 7: for this is my team.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Ye, it's my team. Let's stop the beat beat.
- 26:17Speaker 5: He has to take control. And I've pointed this out
- 26:20Speaker 5: a couple of times. There was a game last year
- 26:22Speaker 5: between Kansas City and Buffalo and Kansas City and that
- 26:24Speaker 5: something went wrong. The Bills ended up winning the regular
- 26:26Speaker 5: season game, and Mahomes came to the sideline and the
- 26:29Speaker 5: camera was right there, and I mean, he just lost it, right,
- 26:31Speaker 5: and you could see the reaction of his team, And
- 26:34Speaker 5: of course then they started winning and they went all
- 26:36Speaker 5: the way through Buffalo to win the Super Bowl. And
- 26:38Speaker 5: I asked Trevor about that in August and he said,
- 26:41Speaker 5: that's not my personality, and I respect that.
- 26:42Speaker 6: I thought it was yesterday.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but I still needed to see it. I
- 26:46Speaker 5: mean it might not have been as animated as Mahomes, right,
- 26:49Speaker 5: but you still needed to see this is my team.
- 26:52Speaker 5: And he reached the coach. Doug Peterson is the coach,
- 26:54Speaker 5: but I'm the quarterback. I'm the fifty five million dollar guy.
- 26:57Speaker 5: As you said earlier, I'm the guy who has to
- 26:59Speaker 5: go stand there in front of the media. I'm the
- 27:00Speaker 5: guy that the fans bash, right, I'm the guy everyone
- 27:04Speaker 5: looks at me. So enough of this crap. I'm gonna
- 27:07Speaker 5: take it. And he did also his legacy.
- 27:10Speaker 6: Meaning you better look in three years.
- 27:13Speaker 7: Nobody's gonna look back on the twenty twenty four Jaguars
- 27:16Speaker 7: and say, boy, Cam Robinson lost that game. Again, I'm
- 27:19Speaker 7: picking on Cam, but it's gonna be Oh they were
- 27:22Speaker 7: four and fourth Trevor Lawrence. So these quarterbacks know this
- 27:25Speaker 7: is how they're remembered man forever. And if it means
- 27:28Speaker 7: anything to you, you don't want to be remembered like that.
- 27:30Speaker 2: And you want to see a little fight out of them, right.
- 27:32Speaker 2: We talked about this, Brian Thomas Junior.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Bring some energy.
- 27:34Speaker 2: You don't want to see them looking lifeless and confused.
- 27:36Speaker 2: You want to see them fighting for something. And I
- 27:39Speaker 2: know Trevor's personality is very calm and cool and collected,
- 27:42Speaker 2: but this is not a time for that.
- 27:43Speaker 6: They think they may have seen a sea change on
- 27:44Speaker 6: that ye, and.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'm hoping that it is correct. Mine's not about coaching.
- 27:48Speaker 2: We talked a little bit about this. It's not just
- 27:50Speaker 2: about the coaching where they're coaching mistakes. Absolutely, do you
- 27:53Speaker 2: at home maybe think there needs to be changes, Sure,
- 27:55Speaker 2: I'm not gonna argue with you on that. Also, I
- 27:58Speaker 2: need to see something from the players. Players make plays.
- 28:00Speaker 2: We talked about these contracts that were dueled out in
- 28:02Speaker 2: the offseason. Trevor Lawrence is one of them. Josh Heindallen,
- 28:05Speaker 2: you know you're keeping everybody home. Tyson Campbell's hurt, that's fine,
- 28:09Speaker 2: but you're giving out these contracts. They are paid to
- 28:11Speaker 2: play football. And this was every facet of the game.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Cambell Little's rookie. You have to make your kicks even
- 28:16Speaker 2: if the weather, even if it's raining whatever.
- 28:18Speaker 3: We expect him to make those kicks. We expect the
- 28:20Speaker 3: defense to get some stops, and.
- 28:21Speaker 2: We need them turnovers. We didn't see any of that.
- 28:24Speaker 2: And Trevor Lawrence needs to play better as well.
- 28:26Speaker 3: Is there excuses? Is there stuff going on around him?
- 28:28Speaker 2: Absolutely, But if you're going to be the guy at
- 28:30Speaker 2: some point, it's the quarterback league.
- 28:31Speaker 3: You've got to go out there and you have to
- 28:32Speaker 3: win a game at times. Was he going to be
- 28:34Speaker 3: able to do that yesterday?
- 28:35Speaker 2: I don't know what we need to see and hopefully
- 28:37Speaker 2: if we've seen this fire from him now, we will
- 28:39Speaker 2: see a change. Because Trevor Lawrence hasn't won a football
- 28:41Speaker 2: game since November. He's not frustrated now. I don't know
- 28:45Speaker 2: what's going to make him more frustrated.
- 28:46Speaker 5: Well, and we've talked about how frustrated he was yesterday
- 28:49Speaker 5: with everything going around him. But on that first series
- 28:52Speaker 5: he missed a wide open and get Davis right, He's
- 28:56Speaker 5: got to be better too. Add to his credit, he
- 28:59Speaker 5: pointed the finger at himself. Doug Peterson pointed the finger
- 29:01Speaker 5: at himself. Those are all good things. Now you have
- 29:04Speaker 5: to go and actually get something done it.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Yes, all right, We're going to talk a little bit
- 29:09Speaker 2: after the break about what's coming up this week as
- 29:10Speaker 2: Monday Night football is ahead.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Jags fans, if.
- 29:20Speaker 2: You want customized Jaguars furniture for your home, check at
- 29:22Speaker 2: zipchare dot com about all the customizable options. Zipcher is
- 29:25Speaker 2: furniture for fans.
- 29:29Speaker 4: We gotta be honest with ourselves. And if you don't
- 29:31Speaker 4: like it, and if fem a mistake and you don't
- 29:34Speaker 4: like people calling it out and talking about it, you
- 29:35Speaker 4: need to find different jobs because isn't the one. You know,
- 29:38Speaker 4: things matter, little details matter, and I'm talking to myself
- 29:41Speaker 4: as much as anyone, so i don't want it to
- 29:42Speaker 4: be misconstrued. But that stuff matters. And you look at
- 29:46Speaker 4: these every play. Everyone had a play today at least
- 29:49Speaker 4: one that they can do their job a lot better,
- 29:52Speaker 4: and you look back at it and all those plays
- 29:54Speaker 4: add up and they affect the game and you end
- 29:56Speaker 4: up losing. And we played as bad as we can play.
- 29:58Speaker 4: And what was at eighteen to team or something. I
- 30:00Speaker 4: mean we had we were one for four in the
- 30:03Speaker 4: red zone. If we score one of those times, we
- 30:05Speaker 4: win the game. I mean it comes down to that.
- 30:06Speaker 4: You know, we had the you know where we didn't
- 30:08Speaker 4: get set on the one player touchdown to Christian and
- 30:11Speaker 4: then you look back at the drive earlier in the
- 30:13Speaker 4: first half, we had the two timeouts, and then after
- 30:15Speaker 4: that I think I missed Brian who was open, and
- 30:18Speaker 4: then after that I had to scramble and whatever. So
- 30:21Speaker 4: it's just little details. And we were in the red
- 30:23Speaker 4: zone twice, close down the inside the five and didn't score,
- 30:28Speaker 4: And it's that can't it can't. You can't do that
- 30:30Speaker 4: this league. You got to take advantage of those opportunities.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Tinking of that accountability from Trevor Lawrence. Obviously a frustrating
- 30:37Speaker 2: loss for everybody, but going to look yourself in the
- 30:39Speaker 2: mirror this week and figure things out and potentially make
- 30:42Speaker 2: them changes.
- 30:42Speaker 5: Yeah, look, after everything we've talked about here and it's
- 30:46Speaker 5: Monday morning, and people feel lousy about the result yesterday.
- 30:50Speaker 5: If and it's a big if, but if you can
- 30:52Speaker 5: go on the road the next two weeks and find
- 30:55Speaker 5: a way to win a couple of football games, you're right.
- 30:57Speaker 5: John Rae thought they would be in September. I always said,
- 30:59Speaker 5: you know, get through September two and two. Well, you
- 31:01Speaker 5: just lost two that you probably should have won, could
- 31:04Speaker 5: have won. Uncle, win a couple that no one expects
- 31:06Speaker 5: you to win. I know nobody's thinking that it's impossible
- 31:09Speaker 5: this morning, but that doesn't mean it isn't.
- 31:12Speaker 7: Yeah, you've lost two games by eight points and you know,
- 31:14Speaker 7: sort of lost him on the last play.
- 31:16Speaker 6: None of that matters because O and two stinks.
- 31:19Speaker 7: Trevor's fed up. He's fed up with himself, he's fed
- 31:21Speaker 7: up with having to stand there. He's fed up with
- 31:24Speaker 7: teammates and coaches, which he said both yesterday not being better,
- 31:30Speaker 7: and he called everybody out and including himself. I'm interested
- 31:34Speaker 7: to see how that manifests itself this week and what
- 31:37Speaker 7: this kid's like going forward, because I was encouraged yesterday
- 31:39Speaker 7: after the game.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Yes, we are encouraged by that.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Hopefully things keep on that track, things pushed back a
- 31:44Speaker 2: day this week.
- 31:45Speaker 3: We'll be back with you on Wednesday
- 31:46Speaker 2: For jags Am to talk about what's gonna happen this
- 31:49Speaker 2: week and what we can expect on Monday Night football
