- 0:12Have you ever wondered why God sometimes leads His people into difficult
- 0:17places? We often assume that if we are walking in the
- 0:20will of God, the road should become easier, the doors should open,
- 0:25the path should be smooth. But sometimes the opposite happens.
- 0:29Sometimes obedience leads us into unfamiliar
- 0:33territory, into seasons we never would have chosen for ourselves.
- 0:37That was true for an old man named Jacob.
- 0:41After years of heartbreak, he finally learned that Joseph,
- 0:44the son that he thought was dead, was alive in Egypt.
- 0:48The news filled him with hope, but it also raised a very difficult
- 0:52question. Should he really go to Egypt?
- 0:56After all, Egypt wasn't just another destination; it was outside
- 1:01the land God had promised his family. His grandfather Abraham had found trouble
- 1:05there, and God had specifically told Isaac not to go.
- 1:09So, before taking another step, Jacob stopped to seek
- 1:13the Lord. The answer God gave Jacob contains one of the
- 1:17most comforting promises in all of Scripture. Welcome to Traveler's
- 1:21Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm Greg Dowdy.
- 1:24Every page of the Bible invites us into a world far different from
- 1:28our own. A world of deserts and vineyards,
- 1:32shepherds and fishermen, ancient cities and
- 1:35forgotten customs. Yet, when we step into that
- 1:38world, we discover that the God who worked then is
- 1:42the very same God who is at work today.
- 1:46A special thanks to John Buckner, whose research continues
- 1:49to help us appreciate the richness of the biblical world.
- 1:54Let's travel today to Beersheba, the last stop
- 1:58before Jacob crossed into Egypt. Jacob wasn't rushing.
- 2:02Before leaving Canaan, he stopped at Beersheba, the place where
- 2:06both Abraham and Isaac had worshiped God. It was a place
- 2:10of remembrance, a place of surrender. A place to seek
- 2:13the Lord before taking another step. How wise
- 2:17is that? Before major and minor decisions, we should always
- 2:21pause at an altar before taking another step.
- 2:26That night God spoke, fear not to go
- 2:29down into Egypt. That night
- 2:33God spoke, fear not to go down
- 2:37into Egypt. I will go down with thee into
- 2:40Egypt. Notice what God didn't promise.
- 2:44He didn't promise that Egypt would be easy.
- 2:47He didn't promise there would never be suffering.
- 2:50He didn't promise Jacob would return personally to Canaan.
- 2:54Instead, he promised something even greater.
- 2:57God said, I will go with thee.
- 3:01Those may be the sweetest words in the entire passage.
- 3:05God's greatest gift has never been only his blessings.
- 3:09God's greatest gift is his presence.
- 3:13Jacob could not see what lay ahead. He didn't know his
- 3:16descendants would remain in Egypt for centuries. He didn't know
- 3:20they would eventually become slaves. He didn't know generations
- 3:24would come and go before the Exodus. But God knew.
- 3:29Long before Israel entered Egypt, God had already entered
- 3:33tomorrow. For hundreds of years, there's no recorded message
- 3:36from heaven— no prophets, no visions, no burning bushes.
- 3:40Yet God never abandoned his people.
- 3:43Silence did not mean absence. While heaven seemed
- 3:47quiet, God was still working, still keeping every promise he
- 3:51made. The family that entered Egypt with only 70 people left
- 3:55as a mighty nation, exactly as God had promised
- 4:00Jacob. That truth echoes throughout Scripture.
- 4:04God was with Joseph in the prison. He was with Daniel in
- 4:07Babylon. He was with Esther in Persia.
- 4:11He was with the 3 Hebrew young men in the fiery furnace.
- 4:14And when the fullness of time came, Jesus himself retraced
- 4:19Israel's journey. As a child, he was taken into Egypt
- 4:22and later called out again, fulfilling the words of Hosea:
- 4:26of Egypt have I called my son. Then during
- 4:30Passover, the celebration of Israel's deliverance from Egypt,
- 4:34Jesus became the true Passover Lamb, delivering us
- 4:37from a far greater bondage than Pharaoh could ever impose.
- 4:41The God who accompanied Israel into Egypt is the same God
- 4:45who entered our broken world in the person of Jesus Christ. He has
- 4:49always been a God who comes near. Perhaps you're
- 4:53walking through your own Egypt today.
- 4:56Maybe it wasn't the road you expected.
- 4:59Perhaps you've prayed, waited, and wondered why
- 5:03heaven seems so quiet.
- 5:06Take heart. God's silence is never evidence of his absence.
- 5:11Many of his greatest works happen where we cannot see them.
- 5:15Sometimes what feels like exile is actually preparation.
- 5:20Sometimes what feels like delay is divine protection.
- 5:25Sometimes God leads us into difficult places because he
- 5:29intends to accomplish something there that could happen nowhere
- 5:32else. And wherever he leads, he goes.
- 5:37The promise that strengthened Jacob belongs to every child of God
- 5:40today. Jesus said, I will never leave thee nor forsake
- 5:45thee. He doesn't send us into life's valleys and then abandon
- 5:48us. No, he walks through them with us. So don't
- 5:53measure God's faithfulness by what you hear or see today.
- 5:57Measure it by what he has already promised. As Paul
- 6:00declared, for all the promises of God in him are yea,
- 6:04and in him amen. Every promise God
- 6:08has made finds its certainty Jesus Christ.
- 6:12So hold tightly to his word.
- 6:15Trust his heart when you cannot trace his hand,
- 6:19because the God who went down into Egypt with Jacob is still
- 6:22walking beside his people today.
