- 0:36Speaker 5: I just said to Marine over here that this feels
- 0:39Speaker 5: like the Super Bowl.
- 0:40Speaker 3: All right, this is not.
- 0:42Speaker 5: We're no longer out in Santa Clara at the Team Hotel,
- 0:45Speaker 5: which is obviously a little bit more subdued than the
- 0:48Speaker 5: Media Row, Radio Row, whatever the heck we call it nowadays.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Era.
- 0:53Speaker 5: This is this is bumping. This is bumping down here.
- 0:56Speaker 5: This is really cool. You's got random people walking around
- 0:59Speaker 5: and things like.
- 0:59Speaker 4: That, but a lot of cool former Patriots here.
- 1:03Speaker 5: I am actually more excited to talk about this football
- 1:07Speaker 5: game because I feel like a lot of things that
- 1:10Speaker 5: get washed away in Super Bowl week is actual football.
- 1:15Speaker 3: You get nonsense.
- 1:16Speaker 5: We got former Patriots walking around, We got legendary Patriots
- 1:20Speaker 5: walking around.
- 1:21Speaker 3: We also have media personalities.
- 1:23Speaker 5: All that stuff, and I'm glad to sit down here
- 1:26Speaker 5: with you and actually talk about this game on Sunday
- 1:29Speaker 5: in the Seattle Seahawks and Super Bowl sixty in the
- 1:31Speaker 5: game that's actually gonna be played at Levi Stadium in
- 1:35Speaker 5: four days, which is gonna come up quick. It's gonna
- 1:38Speaker 5: be here before we know it. Just a couple of
- 1:40Speaker 5: things to set the table here. We are going to
- 1:43Speaker 5: have a couple guests ball knowers like ourselves, not your
- 1:48Speaker 5: guests trying to sell you ads.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Or something like that.
- 1:51Speaker 5: We're going to have Benjamin Solac from ESPN's gonna stop
- 1:54Speaker 5: by in about fifteen minutes or so. Sean Siad from
- 1:58Speaker 5: Asumer Sports is also going to stop buying the second
- 2:01Speaker 5: hour Big X's and O's guy like ourselves.
- 2:05Speaker 3: So that would be a lot of fun.
- 2:06Speaker 5: But I wanted to open the show, Alex with our
- 2:09Speaker 5: big picture thoughts on this game. I have a whole
- 2:11Speaker 5: list of things that we're gonna get into the nitty
- 2:13Speaker 5: gritty details of the game over the next two hours.
- 2:16Speaker 5: But just where are you at with this football game
- 2:19Speaker 5: that is happening Even though all this circus is happening
- 2:22Speaker 5: right now and not a lot of people are talking
- 2:25Speaker 5: about it.
- 2:25Speaker 4: No, this happens when you cover the Super Bowl like
- 2:28Speaker 4: you get there's so much going on at Radio Row,
- 2:30Speaker 4: and I know it sounds weird, but like you're interviewing
- 2:33Speaker 4: guests and you're talking to people that you know you
- 2:35Speaker 4: don't usually get to see in this and that you know,
- 2:37Speaker 4: it hit me today. I'm like, I really haven't done
- 2:39Speaker 4: as much on the game as I want to do,
- 2:40Speaker 4: so I've been looking forward to the show. My big
- 2:43Speaker 4: picture takeaway on this, I think we talked about this
- 2:44Speaker 4: a little bit last week, is it's it's a continuation
- 2:48Speaker 4: of what's been the narrative of the past few Super Bowls,
- 2:50Speaker 4: which is the elite coaching quarterback versus the elite roster.
- 2:55Speaker 4: And that's not to say that the Patriots roster is
- 2:59Speaker 4: not good. That's not say that Sam Donald and Mike
- 3:01Speaker 4: McDonald are not good.
- 3:02Speaker 3: But one team.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Clearly has the check box the coach and quarterback, and
- 3:06Speaker 4: one team clearly has a checkbox you want to say
- 3:08Speaker 4: everything else combined. There are some other spots where the
- 3:11Speaker 4: Patriots might have an advantage over the Seahawks, but it's close,
- 3:14Speaker 4: and it's gone both ways. It's gone both ways. Like
- 3:16Speaker 4: I don't think there's been some wild predictions and everybody's
- 3:21Speaker 4: picking Seattle you know, you hear the money's coming in
- 3:23Speaker 4: on Seattle and picking these blowouts, and like, I don't
- 3:26Speaker 4: think it's that simple. Seattle's better team, Seattle's a better roster.
- 3:29Speaker 4: It's not impossible for the Patriots to win this game,
- 3:31Speaker 4: especially because outside of Drake May, you could argue that
- 3:35Speaker 4: the Patriots' biggest strength lines up with the Seahawks' biggest
- 3:37Speaker 4: weakness and if they can exploit that, and that is
- 3:40Speaker 4: the Patriots pass Russian interior pass rush in particular, built
- 3:43Speaker 4: Williams and Christian Barmore against that offensive line. That interior
- 3:46Speaker 4: offensive line's young guys, some guys that have struggled, and
- 3:49Speaker 4: if they can get in Sam Donald's face there and
- 3:51Speaker 4: he starts turning the ball over, it changes picture a lot.
- 3:54Speaker 4: So it's the dynamic is interesting. The dynamic between the
- 3:57Speaker 4: two teams interesting because they're built in very different ways.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And although the Seahawks are better, I think again, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 4: one to fifty three, I think there's more talent in Seattle,
- 4:07Speaker 4: but the Patriots have a lot of talent in just
- 4:08Speaker 4: the right spots that they can put a lot of
- 4:10Speaker 4: pressure on him.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a good point.
- 4:12Speaker 5: And now is where I was going to kind of
- 4:14Speaker 5: start with my analysis in terms of the trenches, and
- 4:18Speaker 5: you know, I feel like I typically go this direction anyways,
- 4:22Speaker 5: but I feel really strongly more so in a game
- 4:27Speaker 5: like this where I feel like it's the trenches on
- 4:30Speaker 5: both sides of the ball are going to be the
- 4:32Speaker 5: key to the game. Now, I think the Patriots defensive
- 4:35Speaker 5: front in order for them to win this game kind
- 4:37Speaker 5: of needs to dominate like Milton Williams and Christian Barmore
- 4:40Speaker 5: and kylebon Chase on like they have all playoffs. And
- 4:44Speaker 5: also I would put in Zach Korr in the blitzing
- 4:46Speaker 5: and the things that they've done to put pressure on quarterbacks.
- 4:49Speaker 3: There's no doubt about it.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Statistically that Sam Darnold, when he's under pressure, when he's
- 4:56Speaker 5: in obvious passing situations and he doesn't have Kobiak's easy
- 5:01Speaker 5: button of run run play action to just go off of,
- 5:06Speaker 5: his play has dipped this year in those situations. And
- 5:09Speaker 5: I think we also saw that happen a little bit in.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Minnesota towards the end of last year too.
- 5:13Speaker 5: When you can get the game on Donald's shoulders and
- 5:17Speaker 5: it's not the collective, it's on Sam Darnold to go
- 5:20Speaker 5: out there and pick up third and eights and things
- 5:23Speaker 5: like that. I don't know if he's quite He's grown
- 5:26Speaker 5: a lot as a player. He's a significantly better quarterback
- 5:29Speaker 5: than the one that was on the Jets. Like I know,
- 5:31Speaker 5: Patriots fans remember the Ghost game, and I'll completely throw
- 5:35Speaker 5: that out of your mind. That's not the Sam Darnald
- 5:36Speaker 5: they're gonna see on Sunday. But on that side of
- 5:40Speaker 5: the ball, that has to happen. And I think the
- 5:42Speaker 5: one advantage just from a matchup standpoint, because you were
- 5:45Speaker 5: talking about the rosters and I agree for the most part.
- 5:48Speaker 5: But the one area that the Patriots have a strength
- 5:52Speaker 5: on weakness is their interior defensive line against the interior
- 5:57Speaker 5: offensive line of Seattles. It's the one spot that I
- 6:00Speaker 5: can think of on the entire field where I say
- 6:03Speaker 5: advantage Patriots.
- 6:05Speaker 3: So that needs to be a big advantage.
- 6:06Speaker 5: And then on the other side, head to head, Yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 5: just like groupings, you know, like like I think quarterback too,
- 6:13Speaker 5: but like I think of that a little bit differently.
- 6:14Speaker 4: I mean more like this guy is gonna line up
- 6:16Speaker 4: opposite this guy. They're gonna get their hands on each Okay, yeah, yea.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And on the other side of the ball too offensively
- 6:23Speaker 5: for the Patriots. I don't think the Patriots need to
- 6:28Speaker 5: go out there as an offensive line and dominate that matchup.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I don't think that.
- 6:31Speaker 5: I think that's asking a lot to think that they
- 6:33Speaker 5: can do that, first of all against the Seahawks pass rush.
- 6:37Speaker 5: But can they go out there and survive the matchup
- 6:40Speaker 5: and can it not be a tsunami of Seattle pass rush?
- 6:44Speaker 5: And I think that if they're able to do that,
- 6:46Speaker 5: then I do think that there are things that we
- 6:48Speaker 5: can get into that would allow them to move the
- 6:50Speaker 5: ball on the Seahawks defense a little bit. But they
- 6:53Speaker 5: can't go out there and have a performance where it's like,
- 6:57Speaker 5: you know, we're great in the game afterwards and it's
- 6:59Speaker 5: a forty plus percent pressure.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Rate rate and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:02Speaker 5: So I'm not asking Will Campbell, Jared Wilson that offensive
- 7:04Speaker 5: line to dominate Seattle's front, because I think that's unrealistic.
- 7:08Speaker 3: But can you just weather the storm? Can you survive it? Well?
- 7:11Speaker 4: The thing that makes me nervous there, I think it
- 7:13Speaker 4: was you that had this number last week on this
- 7:15Speaker 4: show about the rate in which Seattle uses line games
- 7:20Speaker 4: and the rate at which they used to. Is it
- 7:22Speaker 4: the highest in the league? One of the highest.
- 7:23Speaker 5: It's so one of the highest in the league. It's
- 7:25Speaker 5: twenty five percent of the time. I think what the
- 7:28Speaker 5: unique part about how they run games their stunts is
- 7:33Speaker 5: that they actually legitimately pick the player.
- 7:36Speaker 4: They run a little bit of everything. It's not like
- 7:38Speaker 4: they have two or three tricks in their bag. They'll
- 7:40Speaker 4: they'll bring the guy off left tackle and bring them
- 7:42Speaker 4: all the way around to the right car Like.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Most of the time when you see stunts, it's like
- 7:46Speaker 5: they're looping right, they're just kind of intersecting. But with
- 7:49Speaker 5: the Seahawks, they're literally running like a basketball pick and roll,
- 7:52Speaker 5: like they want one guy to pick the guy off
- 7:55Speaker 5: and get him free. And then oftentimes the guy that's
- 7:58Speaker 5: setting the pick is actually the one that gets the
- 8:00Speaker 5: pressure because.
- 8:02Speaker 4: They don't know what the hell he's doing. And by
- 8:04Speaker 4: the way, that works really well in Madden. This year
- 8:06Speaker 4: they finally added twists and stunts and like custom twins
- 8:08Speaker 4: and stunts. I don't know if you've been over by
- 8:10Speaker 4: the Madden movie, it's all over, because I still want
- 8:13Speaker 4: to play you in Madden at some point this week,
- 8:16Speaker 4: and I'm gonna run a bunch of twist and stunts.
- 8:17Speaker 4: But two three, I need a two minute warning for
- 8:21Speaker 4: like strategic clock mountain for no. But to your point, Uh,
- 8:27Speaker 4: it's it's something that the Patriots, especially that young left side,
- 8:31Speaker 4: has struggled with a lot. And one of the things
- 8:33Speaker 4: I've heard as a I don't know being helpful for
- 8:37Speaker 4: the Patriots in this matchup, as tough as this defense
- 8:40Speaker 4: is is Mike McDonald, Jesse Minter, same tree and and
- 8:44Speaker 4: so there's some similarities there, there are there are The
- 8:48Speaker 4: Chargers line games are not on the level that the
- 8:52Speaker 4: Seahawks are. This is a new wrinkle, a new element
- 8:55Speaker 4: that they really haven't dealt with this year.
- 8:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's a they win, I would say, more
- 9:02Speaker 5: so in terms of Seattle's pass rush, they win in
- 9:06Speaker 5: two ways.
- 9:07Speaker 3: I think they win with insane depth.
- 9:08Speaker 5: They go like like six or seven deep in terms
- 9:12Speaker 5: of their depth on the defensive line, so they can
- 9:14Speaker 5: keep guys fresh and they can rotate a lot, I
- 9:17Speaker 5: would say. I would say the other way that they
- 9:19Speaker 5: win a lot is with scheme like I don't know
- 9:23Speaker 5: if this is Will Anderson and Danielle Hunter off the
- 9:26Speaker 5: edge that have they have these like just terrific one
- 9:29Speaker 5: on one winners. You know, Like I think that this
- 9:31Speaker 5: is more the collection of the talent, the groups of
- 9:36Speaker 5: pass rushers that they have, the stunt schemes, the pressures
- 9:41Speaker 5: that they do bring in terms of the blitzes when
- 9:43Speaker 5: they do decide to bring extra rushers, and all that
- 9:46Speaker 5: kind of stuff, I think is a big part of it,
- 9:49Speaker 5: and that it can it can put any offensive line
- 9:52Speaker 5: in the blender, especially an offensive line that's going to
- 9:55Speaker 5: be the first offensive line.
- 9:56Speaker 3: In Super Bowl history to start two rookies.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Not only are they starting two rookies, but they're starting
- 10:02Speaker 5: two rookies right next to each other. So it's not
- 10:04Speaker 5: even like, you know, there's one with two veterans sandwich
- 10:08Speaker 5: and there's another with another you know. But the other
- 10:10Speaker 5: thing that I would put out there, you know, for
- 10:12Speaker 5: the Patriots that I would expect to happen is Ramondre
- 10:16Speaker 5: Stevenson being heavily involved in blitz pick up, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 5: that sort of thing I would expect, especially on third
- 10:24Speaker 5: down that you're almost gonna be in like some six
- 10:27Speaker 5: man pass protection where Remandre is essentially only blocking and
- 10:31Speaker 5: you know, maybe.
- 10:32Speaker 4: That one where they pull him up in the shotgun
- 10:34Speaker 4: and he comes up right behind the guard.
- 10:35Speaker 5: Maybe you can create you know, even though you might
- 10:38Speaker 5: be sliding the line left or right, can you create
- 10:41Speaker 5: three man services to the other side, Because Ramondre is
- 10:44Speaker 5: basically a bonus offensive lineman. I think that sort of
- 10:48Speaker 5: thing you're gonna see a lot of. So that sets
- 10:50Speaker 5: the table in terms of this matchup with Seattle. Obviously
- 10:54Speaker 5: a lot of other things to break down here. We're
- 10:57Speaker 5: also gonna take some calls and emails at some point
- 11:00Speaker 5: as well. We'll try to get to as many of
- 11:02Speaker 5: those as possible. The last thing I wanted to bring
- 11:06Speaker 5: up with with Seattle. Uh, And we'll get into this
- 11:09Speaker 5: a little bit more with our first guest. But this,
- 11:12Speaker 5: this whole thing that's come out in the last twenty
- 11:15Speaker 5: four Alex Alex about Cover six and how Cover six
- 11:18Speaker 5: is now Drake Mays kryptonite and this is the way
- 11:21Speaker 5: Seattle's gonna win the Super Bowl. My quick take on that,
- 11:25Speaker 5: and then well we can unpack it even more.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I just I don't really.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Think that Cover six is the type of coverage that
- 11:34Speaker 5: you build a game plan A. No, it's it's a
- 11:38Speaker 5: pretty it's a counter, it's a pretty unique call. It's
- 11:41Speaker 5: a counter to your just standard quarters, so that you're
- 11:44Speaker 5: not just sitting in four high all the time and
- 11:47Speaker 5: you're giving.
- 11:47Speaker 4: In the case of Seattle, use it more as a
- 11:49Speaker 4: counter for cover three.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Well, this team quarters, now, okay, yeah, so you know
- 11:54Speaker 5: they they they play a lot of quarters in cover two,
- 11:58Speaker 5: and then Cover six is kind of like the compliment
- 12:02Speaker 5: to that. You know, it's quarter quarter half, right, so
- 12:04Speaker 5: you have quarters to one side, cover two to the
- 12:06Speaker 5: other side. So it's kind of like a combo zone coverage.
- 12:09Speaker 5: It's just a different picture to present to the quarterback,
- 12:12Speaker 5: so he's not constantly just seeing two deep or four
- 12:14Speaker 5: deep guys. So it's a unique wrinkle. But I know
- 12:18Speaker 5: Warren Sharp put it out there. I think Bdard was
- 12:21Speaker 5: talking about it on your station a little bit. It
- 12:23Speaker 5: is the coverage that Drake May is worst at in
- 12:27Speaker 5: terms of EPA per play. It is the worst coverage
- 12:30Speaker 5: he show all the different coverages that he has faced
- 12:33Speaker 5: this year. It is his lowest efficiency coverage of the season.
- 12:37Speaker 4: That's got to be like a recognition mental thing, right,
- 12:40Speaker 4: because he's great at the cover two hole shot, he's
- 12:43Speaker 4: great up the scene against cover three. Those are really
- 12:45Speaker 4: your two options against Cover six? Is it just like
- 12:47Speaker 4: a recognition thing?
- 12:49Speaker 3: I would say that my guess is, and this is
- 12:51Speaker 3: just a guess.
- 12:52Speaker 5: Yeah, my guess is that he McDaniel's a lot of
- 12:56Speaker 5: what they do is coverage shell based right. If it's
- 12:59Speaker 5: too high shell, we're gonna look left. If it's a
- 13:01Speaker 5: one high shell, you're gonna look right. In terms of
- 13:03Speaker 5: where you're starting in the read, you're reading coverage. You're
- 13:07Speaker 5: not reading progression.
- 13:08Speaker 4: And now we're back to this conversation, you're not.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Going one, two, three through progression. You're reading sides of
- 13:12Speaker 5: the field based off the coverage. And my guess is
- 13:15Speaker 5: that you know they are really he's expecting them to
- 13:18Speaker 5: play some sort of you know, Cover two or something
- 13:21Speaker 5: like that. So he starts on the cover two side
- 13:24Speaker 5: that he thinks that they're starting on, and then it
- 13:26Speaker 5: turns out its quarters to that side, and so it's
- 13:28Speaker 5: kind of throwing I guess, like them through a loop
- 13:31Speaker 5: a little bit there. In terms of that, that would
- 13:33Speaker 5: be my guess in my theory. Now the counter to
- 13:36Speaker 5: that is, Okay, could they just play more peer progression
- 13:40Speaker 5: in this type of game? Yeah, I think the only
- 13:42Speaker 5: problem with peer progression in a game like this is
- 13:45Speaker 5: that pass run?
- 13:46Speaker 4: Yeah, thats gonna give you time to do, right.
- 13:48Speaker 5: So are you gonna really sit there and go one
- 13:51Speaker 5: two three through a peer progression?
- 13:52Speaker 3: Now you could go one two in run.
- 13:54Speaker 4: You know he could be that wait to go back
- 13:57Speaker 4: to the line games. Yeah, when you do that, when
- 14:01Speaker 4: you run as many lining games as Seattle does, it
- 14:05Speaker 4: you break contain. Because that's the big downside to line
- 14:08Speaker 4: games is you can break contain because this guy's going
- 14:10Speaker 4: here and this guy's going here, and now you know
- 14:12Speaker 4: who has this gap and who has that gap, so
- 14:15Speaker 4: you know, shoulder aside and and we haven't we haven't
- 14:18Speaker 4: gotten the injury report yet, right, No, get it sure
- 14:20Speaker 4: because they're maybe during our show. I was gonna say
- 14:23Speaker 4: they're off the practice field by now. I think close
- 14:25Speaker 4: to it for twenty all right, so close to it
- 14:28Speaker 4: or seven twenty for those back on the East coast listening.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Yes, this is.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Another game where I don't mind if Drake May's running
- 14:35Speaker 4: more than usual, more than average, Like I kind of
- 14:38Speaker 4: want him to be aggressive to look to run. Seattle
- 14:41Speaker 4: allowed the fifth most rushing yards per carry to quarterbacks.
- 14:44Speaker 4: I don't have the number off scrambles that's carries total.
- 14:48Speaker 4: I would assume it's higher off scrambles it usually is.
- 14:52Speaker 4: I want Drake May to be aggressive and looking to
- 14:54Speaker 4: run in this game, because it's gonna do one of
- 14:56Speaker 4: two things. Either those twists and stunts are gonna leave
- 14:59Speaker 4: lanes open and he's going to break some big runs
- 15:01Speaker 4: and he's just gonna do that, or Seattle adjusts. But
- 15:05Speaker 4: now you don't have those line games. They just got
- 15:07Speaker 4: to power their way to the quarterback. That's a lot harder.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Now you have more time, and maybe you can go
- 15:11Speaker 4: back to some of that pure progression stuff or just
- 15:14Speaker 4: simply have more time in the pocket to do what
- 15:16Speaker 4: you need to do.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that his legs is one of the
- 15:19Speaker 3: things that you know.
- 15:20Speaker 5: Drake May's legs, I should say it's one of the
- 15:22Speaker 5: things that I've written down everywhere as like a big
- 15:24Speaker 5: key to the X factor because they're so good Seattle
- 15:29Speaker 5: in structure, their defense, their coverage is so tight. They're
- 15:33Speaker 5: so good at taking away initial reads and making the
- 15:36Speaker 5: quarterback hold the ball.
- 15:37Speaker 3: They're just very, very sound. They're very good at it.
- 15:40Speaker 5: They don't give up a lot of numbers in coverage,
- 15:42Speaker 5: they don't bring a lot of pressure without dropping guys
- 15:46Speaker 5: out someplace else. So it's a lot of like creeper
- 15:48Speaker 5: simulated pressures where they're dropping certain guys and they're blitzing
- 15:52Speaker 5: other guys. So it's seven in coverage. A lot is
- 15:55Speaker 5: a long witted way of getting.
- 15:56Speaker 3: To that point.
- 15:58Speaker 5: So there's not a lot of space out there most
- 16:00Speaker 5: of the time in their coverage. So when it comes
- 16:03Speaker 5: to the line games and the picks and all that
- 16:05Speaker 5: kind of stuff that they do run.
- 16:07Speaker 3: The one thing that you think.
- 16:08Speaker 5: About with that is, you know, some undisciplined rush lanes,
- 16:10Speaker 5: right and maybe getting out of rush lanes. The other
- 16:13Speaker 5: thing that you can kind of look at with the
- 16:14Speaker 5: Seattle team is they can they pop a few with
- 16:18Speaker 5: Drake May as a thrower in play extension mode, playground mode,
- 16:23Speaker 5: because if they're so good just in their fundamental you know,
- 16:27Speaker 5: structured defense, well, if he starts to extend the play
- 16:30Speaker 5: and he can get outside the pocket and maybe it's
- 16:32Speaker 5: a four or five second drop back now instead of
- 16:35Speaker 5: a two and a half three second drop back, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 5: that might be a way there to get a few
- 16:40Speaker 5: big plays that you wouldn't normally have in structure because
- 16:42Speaker 5: you're not gonna just get chunks against his defense in structure,
- 16:45Speaker 5: it's too difficult.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Now you're you're gonna have to earn it. You're gonna
- 16:48Speaker 4: have to earn every yard against this team.
- 16:50Speaker 5: All right, let's take a few calls. We're weighing on
- 16:53Speaker 5: our first guest here. Let's take a few of these
- 16:55Speaker 5: calls and we'll get him set down when he comes by. U.
- 16:59Speaker 3: Sean is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean? Seanni? There?
- 17:04Speaker 4: Hey? Hello, Hey, how were doing well?
- 17:08Speaker 6: Coreat How are you guys? Welcome to the West Coast?
- 17:12Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 17:12Speaker 6: So, you know what, what's kind of funny is the
- 17:17Speaker 6: first seed and the second seed have played each other
- 17:20Speaker 6: in the Super Bowl fifteen times, in the second seed
- 17:24Speaker 6: as one eight of those games, while the first seed
- 17:28Speaker 6: has won seventh. So it's to me it's kind of
- 17:32Speaker 6: funny that second seed's actually won one more. We'll see
- 17:36Speaker 6: how if it even is offered, the advantage keeps go
- 17:39Speaker 6: to the second seed. But the main reason I'm colling
- 17:42Speaker 6: is because we all talk about the Patriots game plan
- 17:47Speaker 6: and what they should do against the Seahawks, But what
- 17:50Speaker 6: about the other way. I have about eight different things
- 17:54Speaker 6: that I think the Seahawks game plan should be to
- 17:58Speaker 6: try and beat the Patriot. So I'd like to hear
- 18:00Speaker 6: how I'm wrong and some other things that you might
- 18:04Speaker 6: have in terms of how the Seahawks approaches. So on defense,
- 18:08Speaker 6: I think they should pressure and challenge the left side
- 18:10Speaker 6: of the New England offensive line through stunts and games.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Also get to Drake May while rushing for bracket stuff
- 18:19Speaker 6: on digs, cover running back for quick passes, and prevent
- 18:22Speaker 6: May from the beating them with his legs. On offense,
- 18:26Speaker 6: they should try and have success on early downs by
- 18:28Speaker 6: being less predictable. Get Walker the ball in space and
- 18:32Speaker 6: move Donald's pocket and use play action. So I'll take
- 18:36Speaker 6: it off there for that. So I'd like to hear
- 18:38Speaker 6: what you think.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Thanks, Thanks, Sean.
- 18:40Speaker 4: I mean that's kind of the book we live. When
- 18:41Speaker 4: we did the bye week and like, how do you
- 18:43Speaker 4: beat Patriots? Right? For self scouting, that's more or less
- 18:45Speaker 4: we laid out.
- 18:46Speaker 3: Well.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I think let's ask Ben, because I think that this
- 18:49Speaker 5: is a perfect person to ask for some national perspective.
- 18:53Speaker 3: I think it's that headset, Yeah, there we are there,
- 18:56Speaker 3: he is, what's up? Who me? Yeah? You exactly?
- 18:58Speaker 5: I think that you know we are so close Ben
- 19:02Speaker 5: to the Patriots, So we wanted to bring you on
- 19:04Speaker 5: and get your two cents on this game and on
- 19:08Speaker 5: Seattle as well. And the callers calling in just now
- 19:11Speaker 5: asking us what would you do to attack this Patriots
- 19:15Speaker 5: team if you were the Seahawks, And I just was
- 19:18Speaker 5: curious about your take on that.
- 19:20Speaker 7: Yeah, So I'd like to spread them out, and I'd
- 19:21Speaker 7: like to see if I can get guys like Craig
- 19:24Speaker 7: Woodson in Cobbridge. I like see if I can get
- 19:27Speaker 7: Spallane in the coverage to buy in the coverage, You're
- 19:29Speaker 7: gonna see the Seahawks go a lot of multi tight
- 19:31Speaker 7: end sets, right, and it's gonna be very interesting to
- 19:33Speaker 7: find out how the Patriots want to match that, because
- 19:35Speaker 7: if you play, you play bass the Patriots two three fourteen,
- 19:38Speaker 7: then Tonga comes onto the field and I've got to
- 19:40Speaker 7: buy and Anthony Jennings there on the edges, I'm gonna
- 19:42Speaker 7: be able to get my tight ends into the flat.
- 19:44Speaker 7: I'm gonna force those safeties as linebackers to chase. And
- 19:46Speaker 7: while certainly Seattle is not a team with like O
- 19:48Speaker 7: George Kettle or a treatment Pride, Adrian Barne can be
- 19:50Speaker 7: a big problem for you, especially on these rollouts and
- 19:52Speaker 7: if you're trying to zone all that off, now I
- 19:54Speaker 7: get to send Jay a center and crossers and that's
- 19:56Speaker 7: where really you have to do some damage with that speed.
- 19:58Speaker 7: And so it's going to be interesting to see when
- 20:00Speaker 7: the the Seahawks put two tight ends on the field,
- 20:02Speaker 7: how do the Patriots choose to match.
- 20:03Speaker 3: If they go for base, they're gonna throw.
- 20:05Speaker 7: On the roll out, they go for nickel, they're gonna
- 20:06Speaker 7: run the ball with cannithal Walker. And then the other
- 20:08Speaker 7: thing is right, like I said, you're gonna see them,
- 20:10Speaker 7: you know, go to lighter personnel, get us some spread formations,
- 20:13Speaker 7: get some them to get to some gun and say okay,
- 20:15Speaker 7: like listen, you know, Craig, you've had a wonderful, wonderful season.
- 20:18Speaker 3: You are a fourth round rookie playing in the Super Bowl.
- 20:20Speaker 3: We are gonna throw the football last year.
- 20:22Speaker 7: We're really gonna test and to see kind of what
- 20:23Speaker 7: you are as the caliber of a coverage player. And
- 20:25Speaker 7: they're do the same thing, especially explaining is playing game
- 20:27Speaker 7: beyond the ankle or if it's jack games, what have you.
- 20:29Speaker 7: You know, we're gonna say, hey, if you want to
- 20:31Speaker 7: be able to man up on JSN and use gonzals
- 20:33Speaker 7: that way.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Well, you got to man up everywhere else, and then
- 20:35Speaker 3: we're gonna start to test some of those scondary players.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Hyper specific question along those lines, but it was something
- 20:39Speaker 4: that got a lot of play coming out of that win.
- 20:41Speaker 4: In the NFC Championship game, Jas sent out of the backfield,
- 20:44Speaker 4: how much do we see that? And what how do
- 20:47Speaker 4: you counter that? Like you put Christian Zolz in the box,
- 20:50Speaker 4: them follow them out or what.
- 20:51Speaker 7: Yeah, So it's funny because you know Jay said in
- 20:54Speaker 7: the back that you know, how do you counter this?
- 20:55Speaker 3: Every zone coverage has rules for if the back is vertical? Right.
- 20:58Speaker 3: The thing is that you just don't see a lot and.
- 21:00Speaker 7: So if you're not sitting there like every team before
- 21:03Speaker 7: they play the forty nine ers or before they play
- 21:04Speaker 7: the Falcons, we have bejeon Christian McCaffrey, they sit down
- 21:07Speaker 7: during the week Tuesday way, it's like, hey, guys, remember
- 21:08Speaker 7: you know when we're in this and this is our check.
- 21:10Speaker 3: If the back's vertical, this is who's got them? Right.
- 21:12Speaker 7: You obviously don't see a lot of back vertical just
- 21:13Speaker 7: as general concepts, but when you played those teams, you
- 21:16Speaker 7: prepare for this. Now, the Seahawks are leveraging this by saying,
- 21:18Speaker 7: all right, we're just gonna motion this player into the backfield.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Then we're using them that way.
- 21:21Speaker 7: And so because the card has been played, it's gotten
- 21:24Speaker 7: under the table.
- 21:24Speaker 3: The Patriots will be well equipped and ready for that.
- 21:27Speaker 7: But the thing is, as a Clint Kubiak, if I say, okay,
- 21:30Speaker 7: if I know if I get JSN in the backfield,
- 21:32Speaker 7: they're gonna have the zone checket, So we're gonna be
- 21:34Speaker 7: really hard to play him man coverage coming out of
- 21:36Speaker 7: the backfield.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Well, now, if I know you're.
- 21:37Speaker 7: In zone, now I can manipulate you in other ways,
- 21:39Speaker 7: and I can get you know, Cooper Cup open this
- 21:41Speaker 7: way and that way, and so on and so forth.
- 21:42Speaker 3: And so it's not something they're gonna do all the time.
- 21:44Speaker 7: Right, if the Seahawks walk out one hundred percent JSN backfield,
- 21:46Speaker 7: patrists can be like, heck, yeah, this dude's five hours
- 21:48Speaker 7: by line. You know that's overall he'll win for the Patriots.
- 21:51Speaker 7: But now that you've seen the card play, you'll just
- 21:53Speaker 7: see the Patriots be a lot less taken it back
- 21:56Speaker 7: on their heels when that happens. Relative to how the Rams.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Felt I have two questions for you bas off what
- 22:00Speaker 5: you just said. First one, stick with JASN for a second.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I think that one of the things that we always
- 22:05Speaker 5: hear about is there are certain games where Christian Gonzales
- 22:09Speaker 5: just doesn't travel with the number one wide receiver YEP,
- 22:12Speaker 5: for whatever a reason. And I feel like when I
- 22:14Speaker 5: look at this matchup with JAYSN, because of the backfield stuff,
- 22:17Speaker 5: because of the slot stuff, because of all the motion
- 22:19Speaker 5: that they put him in, and all these different things
- 22:21Speaker 5: they do with him, it's kind of hard to travel
- 22:23Speaker 5: with a guy like that that's not just in one
- 22:26Speaker 5: place all the time. Ye you know, have you seen
- 22:28Speaker 5: teams have any success trying to shadow him?
- 22:31Speaker 3: And what would you do against him?
- 22:32Speaker 7: So nobody's had success shadowing him, he shouldn't try it.
- 22:35Speaker 7: The teams that played the best against JSN the two
- 22:37Speaker 7: games that turn to the Vikings game, he had two catches.
- 22:39Speaker 3: For twenty seven yards.
- 22:40Speaker 7: Brian Flores good at his job, baby, And then you
- 22:42Speaker 7: have the Panthers game he had nine catches for seventy
- 22:44Speaker 7: two yards only eight yards perception. Bad day in the
- 22:47Speaker 7: office for JSN. And in those games you saw that
- 22:50Speaker 7: length got it him with a line of scrimmage, Isaiah Rodgers,
- 22:53Speaker 7: Mike Jackson. We're gonna press him aggressively, and then we're
- 22:55Speaker 7: going to have a half safety on top. It's going
- 22:57Speaker 7: to allow us to be physical with a line of
- 22:59Speaker 7: scrimmage with him. We're not going to lose to verticality, right,
- 23:01Speaker 7: because that's the thing with Jay Sennit. He's a wicked
- 23:03Speaker 7: quick So okay, press him. You're bigger than him, are
- 23:05Speaker 7: longer than him. Great, but the moment you lose, he's gone, right,
- 23:08Speaker 7: And so you know, it's it's not dissimilar. It's a
- 23:10Speaker 7: crazy comp but it's not dissimilar to the Tyreek kill
- 23:12Speaker 7: aspec where it's like, yeah, of course you want to
- 23:13Speaker 7: press the guys, just.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Once you miss it's ball game.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Yeah, And so these teams put a half safety on top, right,
- 23:19Speaker 7: the Vikings, especially if you actually have the Vikings played him,
- 23:21Speaker 7: the Vikings would have a man cover corner on him,
- 23:24Speaker 7: not playing like you know, a half playing a leverage right, Oh,
- 23:26Speaker 7: I know I've helped. The inside is playing him a
- 23:28Speaker 7: straight man. But then also with a safety, so they're
- 23:30Speaker 7: not saying, oh, you know, bracket cover him like no, no,
- 23:32Speaker 7: just pressing, be physical, playing man, but we're gonna give
- 23:34Speaker 7: you help regardless. You know, now, the Patriots, as you
- 23:36Speaker 7: guys will know, have not played with a lot of
- 23:38Speaker 7: half field safeties right when they play two highlights to
- 23:40Speaker 7: play quarters and not of the safeties to drill down.
- 23:42Speaker 7: So you'd be curious to see if they if they
- 23:44Speaker 7: use the two man button, not a big button for
- 23:46Speaker 7: him to the traveling point you kind of saw in
- 23:48Speaker 7: the middle of the season, right, becauz Aals had the
- 23:49Speaker 7: game against Drake London and t Higgins. He had the
- 23:52Speaker 7: MKA Buca game where they I think they wanted to
- 23:54Speaker 7: make sure they had the arrow in their quiver where
- 23:56Speaker 7: if they wanted to travel him they could. They kind
- 23:58Speaker 7: of figured out how to make it work and then
- 23:59Speaker 7: they don't need to do it all the time. Carlton
- 24:01Speaker 7: Davis had a great year, Marcus Jones had a great year.
- 24:03Speaker 7: And traveling costs a lot in your defensive structure.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Right.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Roberts Sola had a great quote about this before they
- 24:07Speaker 7: played the Rams or no, the play the Seahawks.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Excuse me the division Roundhe he was.
- 24:11Speaker 7: Like, man, it's a lot harder in our calls to
- 24:13Speaker 7: travel the guy than you might think, because like He
- 24:15Speaker 7: just really limits what you can what you can deceive,
- 24:18Speaker 7: what you can hide.
- 24:18Speaker 3: From the opposing offense.
- 24:20Speaker 7: So I think you will see Gonzalez travel with JSN
- 24:23Speaker 7: on like third and sevens on like, hey, we were
- 24:25Speaker 7: always going to be manning up anyway, so now he's going.
- 24:27Speaker 3: To move left and right with him.
- 24:28Speaker 7: Otherwise, Carlton Davis is pretty well equipped to give JSN
- 24:31Speaker 7: the troubles that the very few relative troubles to Jayson
- 24:34Speaker 7: has in terms of the length and strength to line
- 24:35Speaker 7: of scrimmage, Davis is good at that. It's just you
- 24:38Speaker 7: have to get a safety on top because Davis does
- 24:39Speaker 7: not have the recovery speed that Gonzalez does where if
- 24:42Speaker 7: he loses as a line, Jason's gonna take them for
- 24:43Speaker 7: a touchdown.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 5: It's really the shadowing thing is It fascinated to me
- 24:47Speaker 5: because Zach Korr has talked a lot about it as well,
- 24:49Speaker 5: and he's mentioned multiple times about disguising and if you're shadowing,
- 24:54Speaker 5: it really undresses the coverage a lot for the offense, yep,
- 24:57Speaker 5: because especially if you know it's an outside corner like
- 25:00Speaker 5: is now playing in the slot because he's man to
- 25:02Speaker 5: man on js N and you know it's man and
- 25:04Speaker 5: you know where everybody's gonna kind of be. The other
- 25:06Speaker 5: thing that you mentioned there was about how they're gonna
- 25:08Speaker 5: match heavy personnel, and the Seahawks don't play a lot
- 25:11Speaker 5: of three receiver They play a lot of heavy personnel groupings.
- 25:14Speaker 5: And Marcus Jones has had a great season. I just
- 25:17Speaker 5: in this type of matchup, especially a team that wants
- 25:19Speaker 5: to run as much outside zone as they do. You know,
- 25:22Speaker 5: if you play a straight three corner nickel against them
- 25:25Speaker 5: and their heavy groupings, you know, I do worry a
- 25:27Speaker 5: little bit about the Patriots holding up against the run
- 25:30Speaker 5: in that kind of look.
- 25:31Speaker 7: And you also, like when you are an eleven personnel,
- 25:35Speaker 7: you're gonna get cup in the slot. And if Marcus
- 25:36Speaker 7: Jones struggles with a guy he struggles with the power forward, right,
- 25:39Speaker 7: that's that form out of slot where he just Marcus
- 25:41Speaker 7: will be on him, but Marcus doesn't have the length
- 25:42Speaker 7: of the side. Yeah, they're really getting to the catch
- 25:45Speaker 7: point and so it's gonna be one of those days
- 25:47Speaker 7: where Marcus Jones is like not a bigger part of
- 25:50Speaker 7: the game plan, you know, not super critical. They're gonna
- 25:52Speaker 7: be a more base and then there's gonna come right
- 25:54Speaker 7: a critical third and six where they are in eleven,
- 25:57Speaker 7: and guess who's in the slots?
- 25:58Speaker 3: JAYSN. And also it's like, hey, Marcus, this is the
- 26:00Speaker 3: whole game. Maybe you know, so he might.
- 26:02Speaker 7: Play, you know, fifty percent of the snaps set of
- 26:04Speaker 7: seventy five percent of the snaps, but man, that fifty percent, like,
- 26:06Speaker 7: you know, huge fifty percent. JSN does not play in
- 26:09Speaker 7: the slot new as much as he used to. Right,
- 26:11Speaker 7: eighty percent of his rats this year have been out wide,
- 26:12Speaker 7: eighty two percent of his targets, he's been an outside receiver.
- 26:15Speaker 7: But but when they want to get to a bucket
- 26:16Speaker 7: right third and five and they want to hit a slant,
- 26:18Speaker 7: that boy goes to the slot and he beats everybody, right,
- 26:21Speaker 7: And so Marcus' reps may be few, but man, they're
- 26:24Speaker 7: going to be critical.
- 26:25Speaker 4: We we're talking a lot about JSN and people who
- 26:28Speaker 4: have watched past Patriots Super Bowls, it's never the number
- 26:30Speaker 4: one receiver that gets them. It's somebody else. And Cooper
- 26:32Speaker 4: Cup's not nobody, like he's a he's a household name,
- 26:35Speaker 4: but he's become the sidecar in this offense. And I
- 26:38Speaker 4: know last year with him and Pookie maybe was too,
- 26:40Speaker 4: but truly now but uh, a savvy veteran on a
- 26:44Speaker 4: younger offense and a guy that Carlton Davis told me
- 26:46Speaker 4: over earlier today. I thought this was interesting. He said,
- 26:48Speaker 4: Cooper Cup does a very good job at getting other
- 26:50Speaker 4: guys open and as a route runner, being able to
- 26:53Speaker 4: get other guys open. You mentioned, you know, Marcus Jones
- 26:56Speaker 4: is sometimes the second corner of the slot corner being
- 26:58Speaker 4: in a size disadvantage. There is Cooper Cup maybe a
- 27:01Speaker 4: bigger threat in this game. Then people are making hi
- 27:04Speaker 4: because everybody's focused on JSN.
- 27:06Speaker 7: So yes and no, because Cup will get his buckets
- 27:09Speaker 7: and he'll get his fifteen yard explosive on his own play,
- 27:11Speaker 7: and he will get his third down conversion or a
- 27:13Speaker 7: little option route. But in general, like you know, we're
- 27:15Speaker 7: talking about the Seahawks. They won the Anson championsh game.
- 27:17Speaker 7: This is really good team. If you get them to
- 27:19Speaker 7: be a target Cup instead of JSN team, you largely
- 27:22Speaker 7: did your job.
- 27:22Speaker 3: And if you lose to the Cooper Cup game.
- 27:24Speaker 7: He started here as old as twenty twenty six, you
- 27:26Speaker 7: lose with the Cooper Cup game, you know, like you said,
- 27:27Speaker 7: Patriots fans, No, it tends to be the second receiver.
- 27:30Speaker 7: But sometimes that's what you gotta do, is you gotta say,
- 27:31Speaker 7: this is the guy who's going to beat us, Right,
- 27:33Speaker 7: the guy that I would be most worried about in
- 27:36Speaker 7: terms of the non JSN receivers causing you problems is
- 27:39Speaker 7: Shaheed on the big explosive. Yeah, I think the Patriots
- 27:41Speaker 7: are gonna you know, I think this game is gonna
- 27:42Speaker 7: be grime. I think it's gonna be low scoring. It's
- 27:44Speaker 7: gonna go fast, run, you know, ball possession, the clock's
- 27:47Speaker 7: gonna run, it's gonna be a lot of punts. And
- 27:48Speaker 7: I think the Patriots want to get this to a
- 27:50Speaker 7: spot where they say, all right, if we can get
- 27:52Speaker 7: this game close enough that two or three explosives decides it.
- 27:55Speaker 7: We have our speedy players, we have our great returners,
- 27:57Speaker 7: like you know, we'll get those takeaways on Sam Donald,
- 28:00Speaker 7: Like we can get this game to be lowscoing, grind
- 28:02Speaker 7: me and then Drake mayl league explosive passes this year, Like,
- 28:04Speaker 7: let's just do it that way. And if you take
- 28:06Speaker 7: that there and you get it's to that fifty to fifty,
- 28:07Speaker 7: that's great.
- 28:08Speaker 3: But man, Seattle's got this guy.
- 28:09Speaker 7: Rahid she Heat right, Yeah, And so you've seen Seattle
- 28:12Speaker 7: when they're down in these games and they're in the
- 28:14Speaker 7: second half. Heat has that clean putp Mattorney has that
- 28:16Speaker 7: jet handoff that really just gets them right in a
- 28:18Speaker 7: field goal range. And so if you, I think, if you,
- 28:20Speaker 7: if you have the first half of you won, you
- 28:22Speaker 7: go in the locker room and it's ten to seven,
- 28:23Speaker 7: You're like, man, it's just gonna be one player. We're
- 28:25Speaker 7: gonna get them to that spot. The other locker room's
- 28:28Speaker 7: gonna be saying, Hey, it's just gonna be one play
- 28:29Speaker 7: and they're.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Gonna go to twenty two. So she's the.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Guy that I worry about real quick because Patriots fans. Look,
- 28:34Speaker 4: this is Patriots fans right during the Super Bowl, and
- 28:35Speaker 4: they still get some questions about the trade deadline.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Uh.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Jacobe Myers was obviously the the like that's as good
- 28:41Speaker 4: as the trade deadline realistically gets the NFL. But you know,
- 28:44Speaker 4: it was Rashid Shihed maybe second in terms of the
- 28:46Speaker 4: best deadline move around the NFL. And do you think
- 28:49Speaker 4: there was an edge rusher equivalent that was available at
- 28:52Speaker 4: the deadline?
- 28:53Speaker 7: Trying to think of some of the other deadline moves
- 28:54Speaker 7: like this is two months ago, which means it was
- 28:56Speaker 7: nine years ago.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Right, No, yeah, I know I'm putting you on the
- 28:58Speaker 4: spot there.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Jalen Phillips I think comes to mind as probably the
- 29:01Speaker 5: one edge guy that moved that.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Jamie is in the same can. Jalen was a big move.
- 29:05Speaker 7: I do think that the as like you know, when
- 29:07Speaker 7: you look to see defensive performances in the Super Bowl,
- 29:10Speaker 7: you tend to see teams are the better edge rush
- 29:11Speaker 7: presence than the Patriots have. There is no question with
- 29:14Speaker 7: that said, boy Milliwillams Chris Barber play a little potball.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Those guys are.
- 29:18Speaker 7: And that's the thing is if you're not going to
- 29:19Speaker 7: be a team with dominant edge presence, which let's you know,
- 29:21Speaker 7: talk to Mike McDonald defense for a second. The whole
- 29:23Speaker 7: premise of this defense is we don't really play pass
- 29:25Speaker 7: rushers at the ede rusher spots. Guess you guys to
- 29:26Speaker 7: defend the run is, hey, you gotta have a really
- 29:28Speaker 7: good interior rush, and the Patriots and the six Bolls
- 29:30Speaker 7: have both had that, and then you have to be
- 29:31Speaker 7: able to either simulate pressure McDonald or blitz. And that's
- 29:34Speaker 7: what the Patriots have really done since to be fourteen
- 29:36Speaker 7: and so while yes, you know you're you're going to
- 29:38Speaker 7: be ringing the bell with Caleb on Chason on the
- 29:40Speaker 7: third and long and maybe that's not as much star
- 29:42Speaker 7: power at Edge Rusher as you might hope and expect
- 29:43Speaker 7: for a Super Bowl team. I do have a lot
- 29:45Speaker 7: of faith in Zac curR and I do have a
- 29:46Speaker 7: ton of faith in this interior pass rush to be
- 29:48Speaker 7: the kind of the the the scale tipping unit here
- 29:51Speaker 7: for the Patriots defense, I want.
- 29:53Speaker 5: To ask you a little bit about Drake may and
- 29:54Speaker 5: and just good player out of ten, But what have
- 29:58Speaker 5: you seen though on the film in the layoffs compared
- 30:01Speaker 5: to the regular season. And you know, I think Patriots
- 30:04Speaker 5: fans and I tend to do it sometimes too, you know,
- 30:07Speaker 5: great defenses, bad weather, you know, like all those things
- 30:10Speaker 5: kind of bogging it down. Where do you fall in
- 30:12Speaker 5: It's kind of a circumstantial thing versus he's not playing
- 30:15Speaker 5: as well.
- 30:16Speaker 7: So it's important because like we love context and we
- 30:18Speaker 7: love to separate things from context, and so you know,
- 30:20Speaker 7: you get into this all the numbers and the weather
- 30:22Speaker 7: and then this and that and the other thing. It's
- 30:24Speaker 7: the weather, it's the defenses. It is like sometimes we
- 30:26Speaker 7: get too smart for our own good. Like to me,
- 30:28Speaker 7: ninety six percent of May's performance in the postseason can
- 30:31Speaker 7: be explained by it snowed in two of the three
- 30:33Speaker 7: of the games he played three top ten defenses, and
- 30:35Speaker 7: two of the defenses he played were top three defenses.
- 30:37Speaker 7: It was also the case in these games that the
- 30:40Speaker 7: game quickly devolved into, Hey, like, we have the lead,
- 30:43Speaker 7: let's just you know, kind of sit on this and
- 30:45Speaker 7: control this. And that's where to me, the part that
- 30:47Speaker 7: the lands on May. And this is something that all
- 30:48Speaker 7: young players do, especially young passers do when they get
- 30:50Speaker 7: into the playoffs and they go, all right, let's score
- 30:53Speaker 7: twenty four points on one play. Baby, you can't, man,
- 30:55Speaker 7: you can only score seven. In reality, let's just get
- 30:57Speaker 7: a first down. So a lot of these May sacks
- 30:59Speaker 7: and these May fumbles been man if I just hold
- 31:01Speaker 7: this ball for another half second, you know, Keashom Boody's
- 31:04Speaker 7: going to be open forty yards down the field. And
- 31:05Speaker 7: the thing you want to tell Drake is like, while
- 31:07Speaker 7: that is sick, y' also just might not complete it,
- 31:09Speaker 7: like as a forty yard pass scramble get to a
- 31:11Speaker 7: second and six, Like let dance with the one that
- 31:13Speaker 7: brought you be hyper efficient with May and now approaching
- 31:17Speaker 7: the super Bowl and him having these these games. It's
- 31:19Speaker 7: tricky because you're going up against the Seattle team where
- 31:21Speaker 7: it's like, listen, you're gonna need him to be superhero
- 31:23Speaker 7: to get your explosive. Seattle's the second lowest explosive playerrate
- 31:26Speaker 7: given up by defense in the last fifteen years. Right,
- 31:28Speaker 7: nobody gets explosives on Seattle. The only way to do
- 31:31Speaker 7: it is to break the defensive structure by scrambling, getting
- 31:33Speaker 7: out out of the pocket and winning on the backyard
- 31:35Speaker 7: football right, winning in a little dirt pad drawn up
- 31:37Speaker 7: to play something that made spectacularly well. So he's had
- 31:40Speaker 7: these three games and a lot of fumbles and a
- 31:42Speaker 7: lot of sacks, and the note on the sideline has
- 31:45Speaker 7: been like, hey man, just calm down, just ex scoot
- 31:47Speaker 7: the offense, just dank and dunk. You'll be fine. And
- 31:48Speaker 7: then you get to the playoffs and it's like, hey,
- 31:50Speaker 7: then we need you to go put right yeah through that.
- 31:52Speaker 7: But the Superman cake on. So it's it is a
- 31:55Speaker 7: big challenge in terms of his your kind of disposition
- 31:58Speaker 7: and his headspace and where he's at.
- 32:00Speaker 3: Right now as a young player. Here in the postseason. Yeah,
- 32:02Speaker 3: you mentioned sorry you can go.
- 32:04Speaker 5: You mentioned the play extension against the sex defense, and
- 32:07Speaker 5: I've kind of zoned in on that a little bit now.
- 32:10Speaker 5: The next gen numbers say that they give up the
- 32:12Speaker 5: most passing yards in the league on the play, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 5: extended dropbacks. Some of that seems like it's a little
- 32:18Speaker 5: bit of desperation where guys are kind of running around
- 32:20Speaker 5: trying to save themselves. Long witted question, but that seems
- 32:25Speaker 5: to me like something May could maybe do that Stafford
- 32:28Speaker 5: and Purty maybe weren't quite as good at in that
- 32:31Speaker 5: this is such a good structurally sound defense exactly that
- 32:34Speaker 5: you're not going to just beat him straight up, and
- 32:36Speaker 5: he might need Drake May to get out of the
- 32:38Speaker 5: pocket and not necessarily even just run, but maybe even
- 32:41Speaker 5: as a thrower makes some plays like that.
- 32:43Speaker 7: Yeah, the play extension stat for the Seahawks' survivor bias
- 32:46Speaker 7: where it's it's their defense is so good in structure
- 32:49Speaker 7: that when they give up passing yards, it's inherently out
- 32:50Speaker 7: of structures. They wouldn't give it up instructure in the
- 32:52Speaker 7: first place. The stat that I keep coming back to
- 32:54Speaker 7: is of the ten quarterbacks this year, with the most
- 32:56Speaker 7: rushing yards per games. He always played one of them.
- 32:58Speaker 7: It's Baker Mayfield in week two, he's ninth.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:00Speaker 7: They did not play Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts,
- 33:03Speaker 7: Drake may Patrick Mahomes. They did not play the extended
- 33:06Speaker 7: guys Kalla William, c J.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Stroud.
- 33:07Speaker 7: They did not play these dudes, right and so well.
- 33:09Speaker 7: They played CJ but got hurt. This year they had
- 33:11Speaker 7: a Jane Daniels game. They had a Kyler Murray game.
- 33:13Speaker 7: In general, they have not faced a quarterback who can
- 33:16Speaker 7: explode in the running game, you know, like they had
- 33:18Speaker 7: the Rock Burda games. Oh you know, third and six
- 33:20Speaker 7: scramble for the first down, explode in the running game the
- 33:22Speaker 7: way that Drake can. Similarly, they have not faced one
- 33:25Speaker 7: of these guys who when he gets outside of the
- 33:27Speaker 7: pocket and he starts, you know, you this way, you
- 33:29Speaker 7: this way, just deform this guy whatever, can really make
- 33:31Speaker 7: some magic happen. Right, and so what Seattle is going
- 33:33Speaker 7: to be tested by, you know, like you look at
- 33:35Speaker 7: their numbers. Everything is his first place, the first place
- 33:38Speaker 7: on extended drop backs like ninth and eighty, paper drop
- 33:40Speaker 7: back twelve and success rate still good.
- 33:42Speaker 3: But this is where there's a little bit of a
- 33:44Speaker 3: crack in the armor.
- 33:45Speaker 7: And so again with Drake, you're gonna tell him, listen,
- 33:46Speaker 7: be out of the pocket fast. If you see it
- 33:48Speaker 7: upfield and you want to take it, go take it
- 33:50Speaker 7: right now. No one's gonna come to you on the
- 33:51Speaker 7: sideland and be like, hey man, third of the progression
- 33:53Speaker 7: you had Romandra, No, no, no, just go. And then
- 33:55Speaker 7: when you get outside of the pocket and you break
- 33:57Speaker 7: that first tackle and you're running horizontal.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Shoot right.
- 34:01Speaker 7: If it's Stephan Diggs against Rereek Wollan, he's given up
- 34:03Speaker 7: two inches and four it just throw it anyway, because
- 34:05Speaker 7: we need to hit some of those high variance plays in.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Order to be a defense like this.
- 34:08Speaker 4: First of all, good survivor bias poll. We love pulling
- 34:11Speaker 4: random whatever you're gonna call it, psychological revery, love or whatever,
- 34:15Speaker 4: very applicable to the NFL, probably more than should be.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I as somebody studied made closely, I'm just curious here
- 34:20Speaker 4: because again we're we're insulated in this New England bubble
- 34:22Speaker 4: and Drake Drake May May and all that, and I'm
- 34:25Speaker 4: just curious an outside of his perspective on this Obviously,
- 34:27Speaker 4: he's grown tremendously from last year. And I think part
- 34:29Speaker 4: of the reason he was picked his eyes. He was
- 34:31Speaker 4: not just because he's talented. He's twenty one years old,
- 34:33Speaker 4: and you know, some of the other guys in that
- 34:35Speaker 4: class twenty five years old, maybe less of a ceiling.
- 34:38Speaker 4: How much of Drake's growth this year, and I fully
- 34:41Speaker 4: acknowledge that it's parts of both. How much of it
- 34:43Speaker 4: is simply he was twenty one now twenty two years old.
- 34:46Speaker 4: He's young, he's growing into himself, he's growing into the game.
- 34:49Speaker 4: And how much of it do you think was Josh
- 34:51Speaker 4: McDaniels and even Mike Rabol, you know, getting under the hood,
- 34:53Speaker 4: getting into the lab and tweaking things and fixing things.
- 34:56Speaker 7: I think seventy the first, thirty the second. Oh, that's
- 34:58Speaker 7: not taking anything away from Josh.
- 35:00Speaker 4: No, it's just I just think it's an interesting case
- 35:02Speaker 4: study with how much he improved.
- 35:04Speaker 7: I think a lot of it is is Rabel and
- 35:06Speaker 7: Josh just aren't the guys who were here previously, and
- 35:08Speaker 7: I think had like, you know, a lot more experience
- 35:09Speaker 7: doing this and had a lot.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Deeper of a roll that X for it. Drake's rookie season.
- 35:14Speaker 7: I remember I wrote I think it was week sixteen,
- 35:16Speaker 7: weeks seventeen of twenty twenty four. I wrote that Drake
- 35:18Speaker 7: was having a more impressive season than Jaden was, and
- 35:20Speaker 7: Jada was put up like MVP numbers.
- 35:22Speaker 3: But I was watching Drake.
- 35:23Speaker 7: Just the wide receiver room, the state of that offensive line,
- 35:26Speaker 7: the way that office was being called, just being like
- 35:28Speaker 7: this dude is just sisyphist, right, I mean, like it
- 35:30Speaker 7: is Atlas wrong Greek.
- 35:32Speaker 3: It is just the world on his shoulders and he
- 35:34Speaker 3: is he had he had.
- 35:35Speaker 7: I would think it was the tenth best dropback success
- 35:37Speaker 7: rate of a rookie quarterback in the in this century,
- 35:39Speaker 7: and Jaden was like eighth. And now Jaden had like
- 35:41Speaker 7: the explosives and he had the touchdowns. Drake didn't have
- 35:43Speaker 7: those red zone opportunities. But from a down to down
- 35:46Speaker 7: basis what Drake was achieving in his youth in terms
- 35:49Speaker 7: of like.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Staying ahead of the sticks, making chicken saladut.
- 35:51Speaker 7: You know what in the scramble game, like I was
- 35:53Speaker 7: watching it like, man, if we just get a functional
- 35:55Speaker 7: receiver and a functional left tackle, we're here and lo
- 35:57Speaker 7: and behold, we got a functional receiver, functional tackle, and
- 35:59Speaker 7: it was even more than I could have dreamed. Drake
- 36:01Speaker 7: is It took Josh Allen so long to find the
- 36:04Speaker 7: intersection of Clark Kent Superman right where like this is
- 36:07Speaker 7: when to put the cape on, this is when to
- 36:09Speaker 7: keep the offense chrugging. Justin Herbert, same thing. He was
- 36:11Speaker 7: a lot more Clark Kent. He's had to learn how
- 36:13Speaker 7: to be a little bit more Superman. Drake walked out
- 36:15Speaker 7: and it took him like eighteen twenty games in the
- 36:16Speaker 7: NFL level to be like this is the perfect balance
- 36:19Speaker 7: of success rate and explosives, and to do that is
- 36:21Speaker 7: is astonishing.
- 36:23Speaker 3: It's one of the eight best quarbacks in football.
- 36:24Speaker 4: It's a great point talking about last year because I
- 36:26Speaker 4: remember saying that I think it was around like end
- 36:29Speaker 4: of October November. Everything about Drake's game screamed this internal
- 36:33Speaker 4: dialogue of fine, I'll do it myself. I guess I
- 36:36Speaker 4: have to do it myself, and like I think, not
- 36:39Speaker 4: that he's not doing that anymore, but he's learned how
- 36:41Speaker 4: to pick his spots and doing it yourself can mean
- 36:43Speaker 4: so many different things. And he has every club in
- 36:46Speaker 4: his bag. But there were times where you know, we
- 36:48Speaker 4: needed the three wood and he hit the five iron,
- 36:49Speaker 4: and he can hit the hell out of the five iron,
- 36:51Speaker 4: but he needed the three wood. And I think he's
- 36:53Speaker 4: finally figured out, you know, lining up.
- 36:54Speaker 3: All those situations.
- 36:55Speaker 7: I tell you, like, you know, we're in year two
- 36:57Speaker 7: of Caleb Williams and he's still calibrating to that, and
- 37:00Speaker 7: you're two of Bonex and man like you know when
- 37:02Speaker 7: when the Denver Red Browns had a great year. But
- 37:03Speaker 7: sometimes they need Bo to be able to hit a
- 37:05Speaker 7: throw down the field and he's still struggling with it.
- 37:06Speaker 7: He usually takes years and years for playmakers like this
- 37:10Speaker 7: at quarterback to calibrate the button. And even then it's
- 37:12Speaker 7: a growing process. Right Josh Allen had it and then
- 37:14Speaker 7: he lost it a little bit this year. Then that's
- 37:15Speaker 7: always going to be an up and down thing. What
- 37:17Speaker 7: Drake has pulled off in terms of different play styles
- 37:20Speaker 7: for different games in different moments, depending on who I
- 37:23Speaker 7: have available and what the defense asks like that, I'll
- 37:24Speaker 7: never forget the end of the Ravens game where I
- 37:26Speaker 7: was like, all right, that was like we've seen all right,
- 37:28Speaker 7: this is the Patriots down multiple scores to a playoff team.
- 37:30Speaker 3: What's it going to look like? Drake? Was watched this,
- 37:32Speaker 3: it just started shooting.
- 37:33Speaker 7: And it's like the fact that the guy could turn
- 37:35Speaker 7: that on and the very next game be like, all right,
- 37:37Speaker 7: precise in you know, incisions eight yards down the field.
- 37:40Speaker 4: You just don't get dudes this young doing that twenty
- 37:43Speaker 4: two years old these years. And that's what's it.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Like?
- 37:45Speaker 4: You mentioned him in Daniels last year, Daniel's twenty four
- 37:48Speaker 4: last year, right, maybe it was twenty one.
- 37:50Speaker 7: Yep, I mean it is and and and from a
- 37:52Speaker 7: physical tool kit perspective, he's not precisely Herbert and almost
- 37:55Speaker 7: two names I brought up.
- 37:56Speaker 3: But it's like ninety ninety five percent there.
- 37:57Speaker 7: I mean, like it's so so obnowhed that you guys
- 38:00Speaker 7: got Drake May tries to be off the wall.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I'm a joint.
- 38:03Speaker 5: I got two more questions for you, Ben, I'll let
- 38:05Speaker 5: you go the uh Well, First of all, that Baltimore game,
- 38:08Speaker 5: a lot of the coaching staff this week has pointed
- 38:10Speaker 5: to that was when we knew this might be for real, like.
- 38:13Speaker 3: That, you know, coming back in that game. You need
- 38:15Speaker 3: a game like that.
- 38:16Speaker 5: The one thing that has gone around, I know if
- 38:18Speaker 5: you've been able to see this at all, is this
- 38:21Speaker 5: cover six thing.
- 38:22Speaker 3: That I saw that song. I don't I don't understand
- 38:24Speaker 3: what's happening. I saw like one tweet.
- 38:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I saw one tweet about it yesterday too. We're all,
- 38:27Speaker 5: you know, busy this week.
- 38:29Speaker 3: What's the what's the thing, what's the show?
- 38:30Speaker 5: The argument is is that Seattle's gonna win the Super
- 38:34Speaker 5: Bowl playing cover six against Drake May. Okay, that that's
- 38:37Speaker 5: like sort of the blueprint against Drake May and the
- 38:40Speaker 5: Buffalo game they did play a little bit more Cover
- 38:43Speaker 5: six Buffalo did the second Buffalo game obviously.
- 38:46Speaker 3: That they lost.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Uh, And then you know, just looking at his EPA
- 38:49Speaker 5: per drop back, it cover six is his worst coverage
- 38:52Speaker 5: in terms of VPA per drop back.
- 38:54Speaker 7: What are looking at like eighty eighty total drop backs
- 38:57Speaker 7: in that like ninety I think Taylor has the number.
- 39:00Speaker 3: I think that they've dropped back.
- 39:02Speaker 5: Seattle has played like one hundred and fourteen covered snaps
- 39:05Speaker 5: and cover six it's higher, you know, a pretty high
- 39:08Speaker 5: percentage in terms of relatively speaking. I guess my question
- 39:11Speaker 5: is is that, you know, I kind of feel like
- 39:13Speaker 5: cover six is not really a coverage that you see
- 39:16Speaker 5: teams like foundationally build a game plan around, Like this
- 39:20Speaker 5: is what we're gonna sit in the entire game.
- 39:22Speaker 7: And if they play one covers the entire game, the
- 39:23Speaker 7: Patriots will win the Super Bowl because by twy three
- 39:26Speaker 7: they'll know what they're getting. Yeah, there's been one game
- 39:28Speaker 7: in NFL and not history when my living memory of
- 39:31Speaker 7: the NFL, in which a team walked out with one
- 39:33Speaker 7: coverage and it just broken offense. And that was the
- 39:35Speaker 7: Brian Flores cover zero game against Lamar back in the day,
- 39:37Speaker 7: like when nineteen. Otherwise you have to throw a variety
- 39:40Speaker 7: of coverages. Now cover six. This again, we're done a
- 39:42Speaker 7: little bit of selection bias here. It is not that
- 39:44Speaker 7: cover six is a good you know, a defensive breakstrike
- 39:47Speaker 7: may It is that the good defense is run cover six.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Right.
- 39:49Speaker 7: The cover six is like as like a Fangio thing
- 39:51Speaker 7: and as a McDonald thing. And so you're if you're
- 39:53Speaker 7: playing you play Zach or in Baltimore, you play the
- 39:56Speaker 7: Sean McDermott with in Buffalo. These are just good defensive
- 39:59Speaker 7: coaches there running more and more of this, right, this
- 40:01Speaker 7: zone coverage that looks different one half of the field
- 40:03Speaker 7: on the other half of the field. There is nothing
- 40:04Speaker 7: inherent to cover six that is breaking. Drake May's mind,
- 40:07Speaker 7: Drake Maycy's quarters. He sees half and then sometimes he
- 40:10Speaker 7: sees it at the same time. He's not like, oh
- 40:11Speaker 7: my god, who's doing this? Like I promise you, every
- 40:15Speaker 7: quarterback in the league has a coverage that drop back
- 40:17Speaker 7: is the worst against. It is not so easy as
- 40:20Speaker 7: we play this one coverage move in the game.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:21Speaker 5: The other question I want to ask you is totally
- 40:23Speaker 5: unrelated to the Patriots, but Jeff Statlin, Yeah, retiring or
- 40:27Speaker 5: whatever he's doing with your Eagles. I'm a big offensive
- 40:30Speaker 5: line guy. Dante Scarneki is like my hero. Jeff Stotland
- 40:34Speaker 5: is like the Eagles version of that. Just what's your
- 40:36Speaker 5: opinion on what's going on with that.
- 40:38Speaker 7: Stotland is, I would argue, the greatest coach that does
- 40:42Speaker 7: not head coach in the NFL, and in fact, he
- 40:44Speaker 7: has the longest tenured right. He has been the Eagles
- 40:46Speaker 7: office line coach since twenty thirteen. He survived two head
- 40:48Speaker 7: coach firings, both Jim Kelly and Doug Peterson, so he
- 40:51Speaker 7: was tied with Fandy Reid for longest tenured coach right,
- 40:53Speaker 7: longer than any OCNY DC. This was a foundational piece
- 40:56Speaker 7: of the Eagles three Super Bowl runs and two Super
- 40:58Speaker 7: Bowl victories. Staltland's running game is not as accepting of
- 41:03Speaker 7: prestap motion as the modern NFL would like for it
- 41:06Speaker 7: to be, and so when Sean Manion came in, there
- 41:08Speaker 7: was gonna either have to be a marriage of what
- 41:09Speaker 7: Stalin wants to do in the running game and what
- 41:11Speaker 7: Manyon from Green Bay wanted to do in the passing game,
- 41:13Speaker 7: or there was gonna have to be a split. And
- 41:14Speaker 7: clearly for Staltland too, it was reported by Jeff McLain
- 41:17Speaker 7: last week was demoted from running game coordinator in the
- 41:19Speaker 7: middle of this season. Clearly for Stalin there was like,
- 41:21Speaker 7: all right, if you guys want to go to this direction,
- 41:23Speaker 7: like I'm gonna take my services elsewhere and or retire.
- 41:27Speaker 7: All good things come to an end. At any point
- 41:28Speaker 7: when Staltlin was let go, retire, fired left, I'd be like, man,
- 41:31Speaker 7: this is terrible in this context where you stripped him
- 41:34Speaker 7: a running game coordinator, presumably to pacify Kevin Patula and
- 41:37Speaker 7: to make that work, and then you are losing him
- 41:39Speaker 7: entirely to promote a thirty year old off its cordinator
- 41:41Speaker 7: in Shan Manyon. I think it's an extremely brutal. Look,
- 41:45Speaker 7: Sewan Manny goes out there, calls a good OFFENSI fixes
- 41:47Speaker 7: of Jalen hurts. We're all gonna forget about it, you know.
- 41:49Speaker 7: So it's all your eggs are in this, you know,
- 41:50Speaker 7: very young and very inexperienced basket.
- 41:52Speaker 3: Here. We'll see what happens.
- 41:53Speaker 7: But like the main thing for me is like, independent
- 41:55Speaker 7: of what happened, well we'll have it so and so forth.
- 41:57Speaker 7: I wish the average NFL fan had a understand an
- 42:00Speaker 7: appreciation for what thirteen seasons of unbelievable. The Eagles left
- 42:04Speaker 7: tackle is a rugby player from Australia who never played
- 42:07Speaker 7: the sport. Between the seventh round, he's been an All
- 42:10Speaker 7: Pro player, Like this is truly one of the greatest
- 42:12Speaker 7: coaches of our generation.
- 42:13Speaker 3: Yeah you're you're in the right fan base area. Yeah,
- 42:16Speaker 3: they get it. They get it.
- 42:17Speaker 5: Was scar we get it all right really quickly. Do
- 42:19Speaker 5: you have a game pick? If you pick Seattle, we
- 42:21Speaker 5: won't hate you, but maybe a little bit.
- 42:23Speaker 7: So I picked Initially, I picked Patriots for the ESPN thing,
- 42:26Speaker 7: like all the expert selections, and then I wrote my
- 42:28Speaker 7: column and I tried to pick Seahaks on the column
- 42:30Speaker 7: and I said you can't splits. I really like to split.
- 42:31Speaker 7: I said you can't split, So made me pick and
- 42:33Speaker 7: I lean Seattle. I think it's gonna be an extremely
- 42:35Speaker 7: close game. I think it's gonna be very low scoring
- 42:37Speaker 7: in the first halving. It's gonna be really tight field
- 42:39Speaker 7: position in punts. I think Seattle is the team. It's
- 42:41Speaker 7: a little bit better roster wise pulled a pole. I
- 42:43Speaker 7: do think Drake May has the superhero cape a lot
- 42:45Speaker 7: better than Sam Donald does. Need we need multiple Donald turnovers,
- 42:49Speaker 7: so we need Miller Williams Christian Barmber to really dominate.
- 42:51Speaker 7: You cannot score touchdowns aginst Seattle unless you get short
- 42:54Speaker 7: fields average touchdown drive against Seattle. The season starts with
- 42:56Speaker 7: the forty one yard line, dude, like it's the second
- 42:58Speaker 7: closest to the goal line among the league defenses. And
- 43:00Speaker 7: so you get those turnovers, We're there. It's gonna come
- 43:03Speaker 7: down to one play. It's gonna come down to one
- 43:04Speaker 7: explosive touchdown. If you cannot turn Sam Donald over, they're
- 43:08Speaker 7: just gonna lean on you. They're gonna break you over
- 43:09Speaker 7: sixty minutes. So I think seventeen thirteen was the score
- 43:11Speaker 7: I put in Seattle.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Let me ask you one more thing real quick along
- 43:14Speaker 4: those lines. Last time these teams played Chris Matthews Malcolm Butler,
- 43:17Speaker 4: people run into their computers to Google maybe the two
- 43:20Speaker 4: best players in that game. If we get one of those,
- 43:23Speaker 4: one of those guys, it's gonna break Google. It's gonna
- 43:25Speaker 4: break the Internet. In this matchup, somebody nobody sees coming.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Who do you like? I do like Kyle Williams for it.
- 43:30Speaker 7: My bold production was a Kyle Williams fifty yard touchdown
- 43:33Speaker 7: because Patriots are gonna need explosives. I'm trying to get
- 43:35Speaker 7: the bold to Travan Henderson and Kyle Williams, not in
- 43:37Speaker 7: super high volumes because like those aren't your your engines. Well,
- 43:40Speaker 7: you have to give those guys bites at the apple
- 43:41Speaker 7: because Seattle doesn't give up explosives. And so if you
- 43:44Speaker 7: get an explosive and it goes for twenty five yards, no, no,
- 43:46Speaker 7: we need fifty.
- 43:46Speaker 3: We need seventy five. Like, if you get it, it's
- 43:48Speaker 3: gotta go.
- 43:49Speaker 7: And so I ran to see Kyle involves a little
- 43:51Speaker 7: bit more. I do think Marcus Jones's the punt return
- 43:53Speaker 7: part is a really important part of this. I think
- 43:55Speaker 7: it's gonna be a lot of punt in this game.
- 43:56Speaker 7: Seattle's gonna be very happy to play the field position
- 43:58Speaker 7: game because their punt unit has been so good and
- 44:00Speaker 7: the punt returning has been so good. So if you,
- 44:02Speaker 7: as Marcus Jones, can get that big return to prevent
- 44:04Speaker 7: Seattle from accumulating that small edgend of the return game,
- 44:07Speaker 7: that's a big deal as well. So Marcus Jones and
- 44:09Speaker 7: Kyle Williams, the speedy players, those the ones I keep
- 44:11Speaker 7: off love it.
- 44:12Speaker 3: I love it.
- 44:12Speaker 5: Well, he's Benjamin Solak at ESPN. You knew that though,
- 44:15Speaker 5: and you should definitely give him a follow. He's a
- 44:17Speaker 5: kindred spirit of ours. As you can tell. Ben, thanks
- 44:19Speaker 5: so much for fallasanks for stopping by.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Appreciate it. So there's a lot of good things that
- 44:24Speaker 3: that Ben just laid out.
- 44:25Speaker 5: That I had on my list. So now my job
- 44:27Speaker 5: is done. I'm just gonna pack up and go home.
- 44:30Speaker 4: No. Hey, we even got to the special team stuff too,
- 44:33Speaker 4: Like this is this is a huge special teams game, Evan.
- 44:36Speaker 4: I don't think people understand.
- 44:37Speaker 5: Is it true your there's never been a punt return
- 44:40Speaker 5: touchdown of the Super Bowl?
- 44:41Speaker 3: Is that true? Yeah? So Devin Hester obviously.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Been a kick return and Desmond Howard and then I
- 44:47Speaker 4: think not Percy Harvy.
- 44:49Speaker 3: Yeah, Percy Arvin.
- 44:50Speaker 4: There's never been in fifty at a kick returning kicks return.
- 44:53Speaker 5: I don't think there's ever been a punt return touchdown
- 44:55Speaker 5: in the Super Bowl. I heard that statu yesterday and I,
- 44:59Speaker 5: you know, trusted the person that told me it.
- 45:02Speaker 4: So I kickoff return touchdowns, longest punt return touchdown can
- 45:06Speaker 4: Darry or longest punt return Kadarius Tony sixty five yards? No,
- 45:11Speaker 4: Shahena and Marcus Jones are two of the best. And
- 45:13Speaker 4: it's two good coverage units. But I will say and
- 45:15Speaker 4: his thing about the battlefield position. When the Patriots had
- 45:20Speaker 4: their issues in kickoff coverage late in the year, right, yeah,
- 45:22Speaker 4: and they've been better, not great, but better. But one
- 45:26Speaker 4: thing they've done is especially against good returners. And they
- 45:29Speaker 4: did it last week. They said we'll take touchback start
- 45:33Speaker 4: at thirty five. Now, it's one thing doing that against
- 45:35Speaker 4: Jared Stidham, you know, but with you know, in a
- 45:38Speaker 4: field position battle are you gonna be more willing to
- 45:40Speaker 4: do that or you're gonna test or sheet shied. They
- 45:42Speaker 4: did not want to test Marvin Mims last week. Yeah,
- 45:45Speaker 4: and even in the punt game. I look, Bryce Beringer
- 45:47Speaker 4: didn't have a great game, but it wasn't as bad
- 45:49Speaker 4: as I think some people thought because it was a lot.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Of it was directional to get it away.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Right, and part of the design was kicking as high
- 45:54Speaker 4: as again so the schooler can get down there. So
- 45:56Speaker 4: this guy doesn't, you know, run one back on us,
- 45:59Speaker 4: especially in such a low score in games. So absolutely,
- 46:01Speaker 4: it's that part of it's going to be fascinating. I
- 46:04Speaker 4: love I think he's an awesome player, some of my
- 46:06Speaker 4: favorite players to watch. He also has a really fun
- 46:08Speaker 4: name to say that might be part of it.
- 46:10Speaker 5: There's only a few players in the league, and I
- 46:13Speaker 5: think Marcus Jones obviously doesn't play receiver, but yeah, defense.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Teams, there's only a few players in the league.
- 46:19Speaker 5: That are a threat to touch to score a touchdown
- 46:23Speaker 5: wherever they touch the ball. You know, you don't the
- 46:26Speaker 5: NFL is you know, these athletes are so great in
- 46:29Speaker 5: the league that you just it's pretty rare to be
- 46:30Speaker 5: able to have a guy that can house it from anywhere.
- 46:33Speaker 5: And Rashiji Heat's on the short list of guys that
- 46:35Speaker 5: if it's a punt return. It's a kickoff return, it's
- 46:38Speaker 5: a it's a jet sweep, it's a slant, it's a
- 46:41Speaker 5: go like whatever it is that gets the.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Ball in his hands.
- 46:44Speaker 5: He's he's could house eighty yards, seventy five whatever.
- 46:49Speaker 3: He's a dangerous player.
- 46:51Speaker 5: The other point that Ben hit on that I really
- 46:53Speaker 5: thought was kind of a key to the game is
- 46:56Speaker 5: you know this personnel matching I think is the best
- 46:59Speaker 5: way to I would say on both sides because starting
- 47:04Speaker 5: with the Seahawks defense against the Patriots offense, a big,
- 47:08Speaker 5: big part of why the Seattle defense has really taken
- 47:12Speaker 5: off this year is nick a man worry. Uh, there's
- 47:15Speaker 5: there's safety. He rookie safety. Drafted him in the second round.
- 47:19Speaker 5: Full disclosure. I did not think he was gonna be
- 47:22Speaker 5: a great bro I was wrong about.
- 47:23Speaker 4: He's one of those guys.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Bad job by me.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Nick Emon Worry is one of those guys because he's
- 47:28Speaker 4: like six.
- 47:28Speaker 5: Two two twenty, he's he's a and he he's got linebacker,
- 47:33Speaker 5: safety hybrid trades. Well, it's not just Bill Dolichick would
- 47:36Speaker 5: have absolutely loved this play.
- 47:38Speaker 4: He's kind of souped up Coyd Loggers. So Nick Emon
- 47:40Speaker 4: Worry is six three two twenty ran a four to
- 47:44Speaker 4: three eight forty with a forty.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Three inch vertical.
- 47:46Speaker 4: Yeah, he's just absolute total freak, that DK Metcalf kind
- 47:50Speaker 4: of guy.
- 47:51Speaker 5: And well he actually got traded for DK Metcalf ironically.
- 47:55Speaker 4: Oh yeah, that's right.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 4: Now, sometimes those guys, like some guys, you know, I
- 48:00Speaker 4: love to talk about these guys in the draft where it's, yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 4: everybody thinks he's too good to be true and sometimes
- 48:04Speaker 4: he's not. Trek Wallen or Reek Walling as he goes
- 48:07Speaker 4: by now was one of those, but so was Dewan Jones,
- 48:10Speaker 4: who hasn't really figured out. So he was one of
- 48:12Speaker 4: those guys that looked too good to be true and
- 48:14Speaker 4: then it turned out no, it was true.
- 48:16Speaker 3: He's he's a really good player.
- 48:18Speaker 5: So he's kind and look it's only one year, just
- 48:20Speaker 5: his rookie season so far, but he was dynamite and
- 48:23Speaker 5: he's kind of like like you mentioned, like this is
- 48:25Speaker 5: if Kyle Duggart like really hit and really doubt that's
- 48:28Speaker 5: the type of player we're talking about. But the big
- 48:30Speaker 5: part of you know, why I bring him up is
- 48:32Speaker 5: he's kind of the chest piece that makes his puzzle
- 48:35Speaker 5: fit together.
- 48:36Speaker 4: They can play they can Nickel without playing Nickel.
- 48:39Speaker 5: Yeah, because they can. They put him as the slot
- 48:41Speaker 5: or as an overhang player. And when they do that,
- 48:44Speaker 5: it allows them because he's essentially a linebacker, it allows
- 48:48Speaker 5: them to hold up in the run game.
- 48:50Speaker 4: At a Nickel, he has the play strength of a lineback.
- 48:52Speaker 5: So they play fewer bass personnel snaps. In any defense
- 48:56Speaker 5: in the NFL, they play five plus defensive backs are
- 48:59Speaker 5: the vast majority of the game. There Nickel, and then
- 49:02Speaker 5: on third down and long that they'll play some dime.
- 49:06Speaker 5: And I think one of the biggest thing about this
- 49:08Speaker 5: matchup from that standpoint is Seattle is not going to blink.
- 49:14Speaker 5: If the Patriots put six to zero line or two
- 49:17Speaker 5: tight ends on the field, they are not going to
- 49:20Speaker 5: blink and match it in base They're just not going to.
- 49:23Speaker 5: So can the Patriots put six offensive linemen on the
- 49:26Speaker 5: field and run it and be successful running it?
- 49:29Speaker 3: No team has been able to do that. The Seahawks are.
- 49:32Speaker 5: Awesome across the board against six offensive line I looked
- 49:35Speaker 5: it up because I thought, oh, maybe this would be
- 49:37Speaker 5: like one of those little things that we could look
- 49:38Speaker 5: at and say, you know, try to exploit no like
- 49:42Speaker 5: they've been great against six offensive line, despite the fact
- 49:45Speaker 5: that they haven't played really any base defense.
- 49:48Speaker 4: There really is not much when you go through the
- 49:50Speaker 4: Seattle defense. The one stat everybody points out is their
- 49:54Speaker 4: numbers against tight ends skewed heavily just by the fact
- 49:57Speaker 4: they played Trey mcback bride twice. He's probably the best.
- 49:59Speaker 5: Tight and a lot into like you know, we were
- 50:02Speaker 5: talking a little Cover six earlier. Yeah, you know, a
- 50:04Speaker 5: lot of it too, is like they're just taking the
- 50:06Speaker 5: dump offs to the tight ends underneath his own coverage
- 50:09Speaker 5: and just kind of living with you.
- 50:10Speaker 4: So that's that's an interesting I found this earlier speak too.
- 50:12Speaker 4: They've allowed the most catches to running backs of any
- 50:16Speaker 4: team in the.
- 50:16Speaker 5: League because they have their they have the third highest
- 50:18Speaker 5: checkdown rate.
- 50:19Speaker 4: In Yeah, in terms of yards allowed.
- 50:21Speaker 5: It's like all it's all little checkdowns and dumpops because
- 50:24Speaker 5: they they take away the big But that is.
- 50:26Speaker 4: Where to what Ben was just talking about. If you
- 50:30Speaker 4: get Travon Henderson in space, he's not the average guy
- 50:33Speaker 4: to bring down in space. Yeah, and if if you
- 50:35Speaker 4: can turn one of those checkdowns, and that might be
- 50:38Speaker 4: how you have to get your explosive play. Is a
- 50:40Speaker 4: check down to Travon Henderson or you drop some sort
- 50:42Speaker 4: of screen to Kyle Williams and something like that and
- 50:45Speaker 4: that guy just does it himself. That might be how
- 50:47Speaker 4: you have to get it.
- 50:49Speaker 5: Yeah, I look at this on paper. Yeah, you know
- 50:54Speaker 5: nickel Nickel defense. They got five defensive backs on the field.
- 50:57Speaker 5: They will not blink. They will not put base on
- 51:00Speaker 5: the field, even if you go six o line. They
- 51:02Speaker 5: also won't blink with their too high shell like. They
- 51:05Speaker 5: will sit in too high safety shells all game long.
- 51:08Speaker 5: It's they're the number one defense in the league and
- 51:10Speaker 5: too high safety rate in terms of structure and both
- 51:13Speaker 5: coverage so like meaning what they show pre snap and
- 51:15Speaker 5: what they actually play post snap. So they're they're gonna
- 51:18Speaker 5: sit in a too high shell, They're gonna sit in nickel,
- 51:21Speaker 5: They're gonna play out of nickel. They're gonna be four
- 51:23Speaker 5: down defensive linemen. What does all this tell you to do?
- 51:26Speaker 5: All of its screams run the ball, all of its
- 51:29Speaker 5: screams run it. But then you look at their metrics.
- 51:31Speaker 5: Nobody has been able to run the ball against them,
- 51:34Speaker 5: no one. So the question is that you know, you
- 51:36Speaker 5: go back to the Trevon Henderson point, it might not
- 51:40Speaker 5: be a consistent four and a half yards a carry, right,
- 51:44Speaker 5: But can you get one or two big explosives in
- 51:46Speaker 5: the one game all year to kind of exploit the
- 51:50Speaker 5: fact that they're gonna be in light boxes out of
- 51:52Speaker 5: light personnel.
- 51:54Speaker 3: Again, no team has been able to do this.
- 51:55Speaker 5: The other thing that I would just bring up with
- 51:57Speaker 5: this personnel matching, when they do play a more standard
- 52:01Speaker 5: kind of three or or even dime three corner nickel
- 52:04Speaker 5: or dime Devin Witherspoon now goes into the slot and
- 52:08Speaker 5: they have Josh job comes on the field to play
- 52:11Speaker 5: the other cornerback spot on the outside in Rik Wollens
- 52:14Speaker 5: obviously on the other side.
- 52:16Speaker 3: So that's a more standard look.
- 52:18Speaker 5: And if I'm the Patriots, like that's that's the.
- 52:22Speaker 3: The structure I would want Seattle in. I would not.
- 52:25Speaker 5: I would not want Iman Worry as the overhanger, the
- 52:29Speaker 5: slot defender.
- 52:30Speaker 3: I think he's too dynamic in that spot. You want
- 52:33Speaker 3: him in the.
- 52:33Speaker 5: Deep part of the field where he's a little more vulnerable,
- 52:36Speaker 5: which is what was all over his college tape. Seattle
- 52:39Speaker 5: just had this Kyle Hamilton role in mind for him,
- 52:41Speaker 5: and it's just been you know, Banana's good, right, and
- 52:45Speaker 5: that really changed everything.
- 52:47Speaker 3: But Josh Job, I think is vulnerable.
- 52:49Speaker 5: I think that if you can get Keishawn Boudi on
- 52:51Speaker 5: the backside against him, you can maybe hit some big
- 52:53Speaker 5: plays down the field one on one, you know, on
- 52:56Speaker 5: the outside. And I also would say that if you
- 52:59Speaker 5: get with her spoon in the slot, like, now, can
- 53:01Speaker 5: you run the ball again?
- 53:02Speaker 3: Right?
- 53:02Speaker 4: Like?
- 53:03Speaker 5: Can you find ways to run the ball now? They
- 53:05Speaker 5: only play that look really in third and long because
- 53:07Speaker 5: they don't want where they's spooned to be at the
- 53:09Speaker 5: point of attack in the run game, so it'd be
- 53:11Speaker 5: like running on third and.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Eight, which you obviously don't want to do, right.
- 53:14Speaker 5: But I think the biggest you know thing about this
- 53:16Speaker 5: matchup from that standpoint and this personnel.
- 53:18Speaker 3: Matching stuff, is that Seattle just does not blink. They don't.
- 53:23Speaker 5: They don't get panicky at all about heavy personnel eleven
- 53:28Speaker 5: six oh line twelve.
- 53:30Speaker 3: With two tight ends, nothing like that. On the other
- 53:32Speaker 3: side of the ball.
- 53:33Speaker 5: In terms of the Patriots defense, we all love Marcus Jones.
- 53:36Speaker 5: I think Marcus Jones is a terrific player. I thought
- 53:39Speaker 5: the way Ben you know, broke it down was perfect.
- 53:42Speaker 5: This is a type of game where Seattle is twenty
- 53:46Speaker 5: ninth in the league, and how often they put three
- 53:47Speaker 5: wide receivers on the field. They are a condensed formation,
- 53:52Speaker 5: heavy personnel grouping offense, whether it's with two tight ends,
- 53:56Speaker 5: whether it's with Robbie Oots, they're full back, like whatever
- 53:59Speaker 5: the case may be.
- 54:00Speaker 3: They just don't really do a whole lot shot.
- 54:03Speaker 5: They don't do a whole lot of like spreading the
- 54:05Speaker 5: field in the eleven personnel.
- 54:06Speaker 3: It's just not really what they do.
- 54:08Speaker 5: So sam fit thing like, if the Patriots sit in
- 54:12Speaker 5: three corner nickel, Seattle's gonna run it down their throats
- 54:15Speaker 5: or they're gonna try.
- 54:17Speaker 3: So what do you kind of do with Marcus Jones
- 54:19Speaker 3: in this game?
- 54:20Speaker 5: I think is kind of fascinating because you can't really
- 54:23Speaker 5: have him be like, you know, obviously.
- 54:25Speaker 3: When you're in three corner nickel. The nickel is like
- 54:27Speaker 3: the strong side linebacker.
- 54:29Speaker 5: And if they're gonna run outside zone right at one
- 54:31Speaker 5: hundred and eighty pound corner, you're gonna gonna it's gonna
- 54:34Speaker 5: be a long night.
- 54:35Speaker 4: And the other interesting thing about it is and as
- 54:38Speaker 4: you know, look the Patriots are here, they're in the
- 54:40Speaker 4: super Bowl. They clearly built a good team, but we
- 54:42Speaker 4: had talked about it, like as good as they were doing,
- 54:44Speaker 4: depth was gonna be the biggest issue if they need
- 54:48Speaker 4: to go to Nickel or die, like they don't have
- 54:50Speaker 4: another It's not like, Okay, it's gonna be the third
- 54:53Speaker 4: corner or the third safety. Right back in the days
- 54:56Speaker 4: when they had Kyle Dougler, Jabriel Peppers and Adrian Phillips,
- 55:00Speaker 4: you know, we might say, hey, this is more of
- 55:02Speaker 4: an Adrian Phillips game as that fifth defensive back then
- 55:05Speaker 4: Marcus Jones game. I don't know that you're turning to
- 55:08Speaker 4: Alex Austin or Dell Pettis to add more size at
- 55:12Speaker 4: that spot. If you're gonna play five defensive backs, Marcus
- 55:15Speaker 4: Jones is the fifth guy. So I don't know, do
- 55:18Speaker 4: you get creative and maybe put him outside and the
- 55:21Speaker 4: Carlton Davison the slaughter's a little bigger, Like he's not
- 55:24Speaker 4: necessarily gonna do much better. But yeah, it's just interesting,
- 55:27Speaker 4: like this is where you kind of see that they.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Because they've lived in Nickel a lot too. Is sort
- 55:34Speaker 3: of the point.
- 55:35Speaker 5: I'm trying to drive home, and I remember a while ago,
- 55:38Speaker 5: dan Orlobski brought this up, and I think he kind
- 55:40Speaker 5: of got dragged for it because of how good Marcus
- 55:42Speaker 5: Jones has been this year. But Dan brought up the
- 55:45Speaker 5: fact that the Patriots playing a lot of standard three
- 55:47Speaker 5: corner nickel, which is, you know, if you're gonna do that,
- 55:49Speaker 5: he said, the only team that could does that at
- 55:51Speaker 5: a high level is Seattle because they have Nick Ammon
- 55:54Speaker 5: Worry right, Like it's like the oh, they have this
- 55:56Speaker 5: Swiss army knife that can just do all these different things. Now,
- 55:59Speaker 5: this I'd be, you know, pretty outside the box thinking,
- 56:04Speaker 5: I guess is the way to put it. And I
- 56:06Speaker 5: don't know if they have this in their bag. This
- 56:08Speaker 5: is just a total guess.
- 56:09Speaker 3: I have no idea.
- 56:11Speaker 5: I do wonder if maybe they think about inverting the
- 56:13Speaker 5: structure in the back end and putting Craig Woodson or
- 56:17Speaker 5: Jalen Hawkins down and Marcus Jones at safety in the
- 56:20Speaker 5: game like this, And it's not safety in the traditional
- 56:23Speaker 5: sense of like you know, he's gonna be playing the
- 56:25Speaker 5: post and he's Devin mccorty now all of a sudden,
- 56:28Speaker 5: but the way that they run the ball, the way
- 56:30Speaker 5: that they boot off of it, the way that they
- 56:32Speaker 5: run JSN on those over routes and those crossing routes.
- 56:35Speaker 5: You know, can you kind of use Marcus Jones almost
- 56:38Speaker 5: as like a bracket player to kind of catch JSN
- 56:41Speaker 5: coming across the field?
- 56:42Speaker 4: Well? Also, how you know when she heeds on the field,
- 56:44Speaker 4: because she he's gonna be up the field when they're
- 56:46Speaker 4: an eleven and they need a match. It like gives
- 56:48Speaker 4: you that speed over the top against sh Heed what
- 56:49Speaker 4: you're gonna need.
- 56:50Speaker 5: I just wonder if maybe you know, because a lot
- 56:52Speaker 5: of Ben brought up the Minnesota game as well in
- 56:55Speaker 5: the vikings, a lot of that stuff that they did,
- 56:58Speaker 5: Flores did in that game, and I you know, I
- 57:01Speaker 5: wrote this down this is that was a Super Bowl
- 57:03Speaker 5: fifty three reducks. Like Brian floor Is literally when and
- 57:06Speaker 5: said we did this against Sean McVay and the Rams
- 57:08Speaker 5: in Super Bowl fifty three. Quint Kubiak comes from the
- 57:11Speaker 5: same exact coaching tree. It's the same off The Patriots
- 57:25Speaker 5: look at it, and that's exactly what they do this time.
- 57:28Speaker 3: Again.
- 57:29Speaker 5: You know, obviously different coaching staff, different personnel. Right, I'm
- 57:32Speaker 5: not saying that they're gonna, like, you know, do it
- 57:33Speaker 5: because they have ties to that game necessarily, but it's
- 57:36Speaker 5: what worked with Minnesota and I think it has a
- 57:39Speaker 5: chance to be successful. Our next guest is waiting right here, Sean.
- 57:44Speaker 5: What's up man?
- 57:45Speaker 3: How we doing? Yeah? Absolutely here guys. Beautiful backdrop. Oh
- 57:51Speaker 3: thank you? Right over there, we get to see it
- 57:54Speaker 3: quite professional.
- 57:55Speaker 5: I don't know if you know, but we all we got.
- 57:57Speaker 5: We all we need is the slogan of the Patriots.
- 58:00Speaker 5: It's everywhere like it's our slop. Yeah, it's just you know,
- 58:03Speaker 5: it's all over all the Patriots stuff. Sean, see it
- 58:06Speaker 5: from super Sports right with us now, And I was
- 58:10Speaker 5: just reading actually on the plane ride here, uh, the
- 58:14Speaker 5: stats dump that you and Tej put out for this game,
- 58:17Speaker 5: and I might have like stole like ten nuggets from it.
- 58:19Speaker 3: So I really appreciate that. That was really cool.
- 58:22Speaker 5: But Sean, you know, we kind of starting off with
- 58:25Speaker 5: everybody in the same way. Just you know what, what's
- 58:28Speaker 5: your kind of big picture takeaway of you know, how
- 58:31Speaker 5: this game is going to unfold to you.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I think that people look at it and say, Okay,
- 58:34Speaker 2: the Seahawks are favorites. I still feel like I trust
- 58:39Speaker 2: a lot of parts of this Patriots defense that I
- 58:40Speaker 2: think at all times of this season I maybe didn't.
- 58:42Speaker 2: I think seeing Milton Williams, come back, come back healthy,
- 58:46Speaker 2: come back attacking. I cannot wait to see Milton Williams
- 58:49Speaker 2: over that center, over that right guard for the Seahawks.
- 58:51Speaker 2: That's going to be on my mind early enough. And
- 58:53Speaker 2: of course we can talk about JSN and all that
- 58:55Speaker 2: fun stuff, but to me, it's it's bout the Williams
- 59:00Speaker 2: Seahawks against that center, left guard for the Patriots and
- 59:03Speaker 2: then Milt for the Patriots.
- 59:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 59:05Speaker 5: I think the other thing we were just talking about, actually,
- 59:08Speaker 5: I'm interesting to get your opinion on, is, you know,
- 59:11Speaker 5: just how the Patriots defense matches up against Seattle's offense
- 59:14Speaker 5: personnel wise, and the guy that we are trying to
- 59:17Speaker 5: get on the field, I guess is as much as possible,
- 59:20Speaker 5: of course as Marcus Jones, who you know has had
- 59:22Speaker 5: a great year. But the amount of outside zone that
- 59:25Speaker 5: the amount of that they that they deploy, you know,
- 59:28Speaker 5: I don't know if it's necessarily a great game for
- 59:31Speaker 5: undersized nickel corner. And you know, I saw in your
- 59:34Speaker 5: stat right up that you know, in terms of like
- 59:36Speaker 5: pass right over expected and all those good stats that
- 59:39Speaker 5: Seattle's just run run, run all the time.
- 59:41Speaker 2: Yeah, And I was talking to klon Kubiak on Opening Night,
- 59:43Speaker 2: and I mean he is a person that is committed
- 59:46Speaker 2: to those early down runs even when they're maybe not
- 59:48Speaker 2: all that efficient. I do think, though the Seahawks run
- 59:51Speaker 2: game has looked a little bit cleaner over the last
- 59:54Speaker 2: a J Barner A J Barner is a problem to
- 59:57Speaker 2: have to go up against on those outside zone type runs.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: I think as Kenneth Walker continues to be healthy, he
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: looked really really good against the Rams. So I still
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: feel like on paper, you know, in your head you think, yes,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: you want to have Jones on the field, just because
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: you want to have those defensive backs to deal with
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: some of that explosive passing. Because I think the biggest
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: concern is, say you get that base personnel you're now
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: you're stopping those runs and now JSN running across the
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: entire formation, and no one wants to cover that.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: How I asked you know this earlier in the show,
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: but just hereious your thoughts. So you know, you see
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: the Super Bowl time teams are so focused on taking
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: away the star that somebody else breaks out Cooper Cup.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: Are people underrating Cooper Cup's importance to this game?
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: No? I do think a little bit because the resources
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: are going to be devoted to JSN, right, I should yeah,
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: and yeah, of course, And so I do think I've
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: seen Cup. You see him make a few of those
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: big plays as of late where look, you can look
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: at him at different points during the season and kind
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: of wonder, well, what are you going to get from
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Cooper Cup? But I'm thinking of a catch like on
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: the left side against the forty nine ers and in
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: a pretty nice tight window. So I do think like
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: there is that real threat there. And then I mentioned
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Aj Barner before. That's another person where the Seahawks have
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: two tight ends on the field over and over and
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: over and when they're going to pass out of that set,
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: Barneriser and some certainly someone that I look at.
- 1:01:08Speaker 5: The other thing I wanted to ask you about because
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: I steal your playbooks all the time and things like that,
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: which I greatly appreciate. I just you know, when you
- 1:01:16Speaker 5: watch his Patriots offense, And I got the chat with
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: Josh McDaniels.
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: Briefly about this this morning.
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: There there are a lot of Brady elements to the offense, certainly,
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: but then you have Drake May who is just a
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: different skill set, different kind of player. How have you
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: kind of seen Josh kind of married Drake May's mobility
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: and the old Brady staples that you know, we love.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that you get some of that May freedom,
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: where like you need to have that. You can't just
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: tell them, hey, you need to play kind of like
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: a robot over and over. At the same time, though,
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: like you know, we don't have to do the Tom
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: to Drake comparison. When May hits that top spot of
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: his drop, I mean, he's always there and that's what
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: was one of the things that obviously made Tom so special.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: It makes your offensive lines life easier and easier. So
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: I like seeing different things where I thought May during
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: the season at least like found the right dial of hey,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: this is the hero play. This is not the hero play.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: In the playoffs, I think maybe that dial is kind
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: of knocked off a little bit.
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: But you know, come Super Bowl time, you're gonna need
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: him to put on the cape.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: How much of that do you think was playing better
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: defense's weather, the shoulder versus you know, some people have
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: said he was, Oh, I guess, let's split this way.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: How much of that was the weather, maybe the shoulder
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: versus him having to adjust his game against better defense.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: I'm not necessarily sure if it's him having to adjust
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: his better game. He did not play his three best
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: games of the season in the playoffs. I don't think
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: you know when no one's gonna fight about that. Of course,
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: you see the Chargers, you see the Texans, you see
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: the Broncos. Yes, of course the weather is going to
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: have that effect. Well, I do feel like some of
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: those times where, uh, like the Patriots are one of
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: the top offense in just shorter throws, so when May
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: is checking it down, not at a super high rate,
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: but a lot of those players are actually generating, you know,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: good yards on that and it feels like sometimes in
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: the postseason, you know, if you're trying to bite off
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: just a little bit more you can chew, then it
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: becomes a problem for the offense.
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: What makes Mike McDonald so good at timing up blinzes
- 1:03:01Speaker 5: because I think there are some trends that you can
- 1:03:04Speaker 5: look at, like, obviously every team brings a little bit
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: more on third and long and things like that, but
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: it does seem like everybody is keep saying it's wildly unpredictable.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: You know, what do you see from him in that regard.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he has a special understanding of if
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: you can make the offensive center's life hard, it really
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: breaks apart a lot of things like that center is
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: gonna slide one way. That's kind of the pivot point
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: that it feels like McDonald really attacks, and I think
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: when he sends five, it's a pressure like it's like
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: such a high percentage of that pressure. But he's not
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: too proud where he understands, hey, we can just win
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: with four over and over and over again. I'd be curious,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: you know, that first third and eight that second third
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: night McDonald likes to send kind of four guys to
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: the weaker side of an offense, so it's three on
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: four for the offense, you get that free runner. I mean,
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: I'm gonna be fascinated to see just what that what
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: does that blitz rate look like for them?
- 1:03:50Speaker 4: On top of that, just kind of some of the
- 1:03:52Speaker 4: stunts and line games, and how have you seen the
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: Patriots offensive line, especially that young left side, that our
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: rookie left side, how have you seen them kind of
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: change of how they'd handled that during the year, And
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: is that maybe the pressure point for the Seahawks to
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: push in this game.
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: I mean, it's got to be right. It's that center,
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: it's that left guard.
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: More and then I think like with Will Campbell at
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: left tackle, when you watched the game against the Broncos, Yes,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: there's the clip of he's cutting and it looks like
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: this awful miss. Like I think on the even he had.
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: Thought much better.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: So to come off of that and to be able
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: to end with that game like that is obviously, of
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: course a positive thing to have. But to me, it's yeah,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: it's Leonard Williams, it's against that center, it's that left guard.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: It's a lot of Byron Murphy. There Byron Murphy I
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: think does a strong job in that run game. It
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: feels like when you are a four down, like we're
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: sending four guys over and over, you're going to get
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: into some of those stunts. So I'm curious, do we
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: see that center, that left guard working towards Leonard Williams
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: and does that mean hey, now we got a defensive
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: end looping around in the middle.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: We talked a lot about some of the guys on
- 1:04:50Speaker 5: the periphery, what the heck do you do against JSN?
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: Because I mean, I think the one thing.
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: That I have seen in Solaq was on with us
- 1:04:58Speaker 5: before go back a little while ago, and he mentioned
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: this as well.
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: I have seen teams have some success.
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: With clouding the coverage on him, you know, like pressing
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: him up on the line of scrimmage and then the
- 1:05:09Speaker 5: safety over the top. That's pretty much the only formula
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: that I've seen work, you know, and I know I
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: can already feel it.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: I keep repeating this.
- 1:05:17Speaker 5: I can already feel the Patriots fans during the game
- 1:05:20Speaker 5: the second Christian Gonzales is not the one that's on
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: JSN and they're gonna lose their marbles.
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: Just what would you do? And you know, what have
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: you seen work for a team at all? Yeah? Of course, yeah,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: not a lot work.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: I think when you think of the Patriots, we think
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: of the famous cover one double, right. We have two
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: people in Manton man coverage on this player no matter
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: where he goes. Now, my only concern there is, I
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: thought Klein Kubiak called the game of his life against
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: the Rams. Where JSN is in the slot, he's outside,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: he's in the backfield, he's moving into the backfield. So
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: that makes it really hard because if he was in
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: a static alignment, yes, let's get a corner back back
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: up in his face, Let's have a safety over the top.
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: Let's play that through and through. But JSN is not
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: a static piece. So I I'm going to be fascinated
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: to see, you know, are you seeing a safety rotate
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: down to him when now he's moving into the slot,
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: Because ideally, I'd like to make it a game where look,
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: if Kenneth Walker runs for one hundred fifty yards and
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: they win because of that. Fine, if it is Cooper
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: cut making five third down catches, okay, that's fine.
- 1:06:15Speaker 3: You gotta do what you can to stop JSN.
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: So to me, if it's if it's in the slot,
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: it's that double coverage in man coverage, if he's in
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: the backfield, that's what really stresses me out. Are you
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: comfortable moving Gonzo inside a little bit there? Of course,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: as we mentioned Jones as well, but I'm going to
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: be really fascinating to see those safeties because to me,
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: the Patriot safeties they like to play a little bit
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: aggressive downhill. You get an inbreaking route, you can maybe
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: go ahead and pick one off. But I think Jasid
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: loves to run that kind of post route against safeties
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: as well.
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: We're talking a little bit about this before you came
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: on to the best returners in the sport, Rashid chi
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: Heed Marcus Jones. Who is the better chance to break
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: one and flip the game.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: I mean, that's a great question. It feels like sh Heed,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: but that's because we kind of more recently saw one.
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: I do love that these are two good special gams units.
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: You know, it stresses me out when watching the Seahawks
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Rams game to think like, oh, this is going to
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: kind of come down to a special team's play.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: So I think I leaned towards you Heet.
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: I think that maybe the bias just because we saw
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: that touchdown recently. But it's not just about the touchdowns,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: like if you're getting those like I mean, we see
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the new kickoff, you get just hey, now we're starting
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: to feel starting the ball in the forty yard line,
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: punt returns, you're stealing those ten yards here and there.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: I mean, I think this is going to be a
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: game where those yards are just going to mean so much.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: Oh yeah, we know, Donald's come a long way. And
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: I always preface it that way because I don't want
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: this to sound like I said earlier. This is not
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: seeing go Sam Darnald from the New York Jets. This
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: is a different player now that being said, he did
- 1:07:33Speaker 5: leave lead the league in takeaways. Here giveaways, I should
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: say he did, you know, I think numbers wise, the
- 1:07:38Speaker 5: pressure wasn't great.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: You know, in terms of handling under pressure.
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: How much have you seen him grow and do you
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: think that you know, where does he fall in the
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: now he's a franchise quarterback versus what we kind of
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: saw with the Jets.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: It's cool to think he has one win away from
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: football and mortality. Like at a story level, that's cool.
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: But I feel like if I didn't have the NFC
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: Championship game film in my mind, I would feel like, hey,
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: this is a game where Patriots, you can pressure him,
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: you can blitz him, we can condense that bocket.
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: He's gonna throw the ball.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: I mean, he played the best game of his life,
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: just like a few weeks ago against the Rams. So
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: to see Klin Kubiak be comfortable rely on him in
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: the past game was fun to see. I think that's
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: a little bit more in my mind, But I think
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: back to you that first game against the Rams, where
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: you're you're winning inside, you're condensing the pocket. We're moving
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: a safety across the formation, and now we're getting Darnald
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: to hold that ball just to tick longer. And you
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: go from being an offense that is able to hit
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: those exposives at JSN to now against pressure, you're kind
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: of more along the middle of the of the road.
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: All right, give us your game prediction. We gotta gotta
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: get a game prediction from everybody.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: Go oh yeah, I think I have the Seahawks winning
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: and winning the game by three, sorry to say it,
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: in front of this beautiful backtop and everything.
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: I do think it's gonna be closer than then. I
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: don't know.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: I'm not sure if the if it's like a if
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: it goes out to hey, people think it's gonna be
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: a blowout, but it feels like a slug fest, a
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: defensive slug fest. I could like definitely see. I think
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: the patri's path to victory is maybe you're receiving the
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: ball to start. You know, Josh McDaniels, he's gonna have
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: some shenanigans. We know he's gonna have. He's been here
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: like nine times. He's gonna have something fun drawn up.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: You're able to get ahead, You're able to make the
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: Seahawks kind of play a little bit more on your schedule.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: But yeah, unfortunately got win my three.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: Along those lines, Part two of the Game Prediction. Last
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: time these teams played in the Super Bowl, you had
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: Chris Matthews looked like was gonna come out of nowhere
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: and be the euro and then an undrafted rookie name
- 1:09:20Speaker 4: Malcolm Butler stole the spotlight from him. Two guys that
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: nobody had heard of. The casual fan had not hurt
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: her prior to that game. If we get a guy
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: like that in this game, who is it?
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: If it's a New England Patriot, it's Milton Williams.
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: I know he's got no no, no, no, no, Like that's
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: highest paid player. And I'm talking about like, look guy
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: that nobody's ever heard.
- 1:09:37Speaker 3: Of, tius tongue in the rug. Can we do that?
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: We do that? There we go.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: I love that one. I actually that's what I'm talking.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: We had a similar question Fred and on Pu asked,
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: and I said, it's gonna be Kiris Tonga, right, and
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: maybe even you know, blocking a little bit in the
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: run game on offense too, he's very good. Uh, Sean,
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: tell everybody where they can find your work. If you're
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: an analytics guy like me, you're gonna want to follow
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: this guy.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Appreciate that.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: Just check me out on Twitter at Science Games breaking
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: down every single thing that that I love learning about
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: this game.
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: Cannot wait for Sunday. Thanks for joining us. I appreciate
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: it much so.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: Yeah that I'm telling you, Sean gives me playbooks all
- 1:10:15Speaker 5: the time.
- 1:10:15Speaker 3: When I ask him, he gives me stats.
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: Very helpful for your guy here, I really quickly or
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: not really quickly, we can talk about it. But Patriots
- 1:10:25Speaker 5: just dropped their first injury. All right, So we got
- 1:10:28Speaker 5: the injury report.
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: Do we get the too?
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: I did not look for that, but we got an
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: injury report.
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: Drake may full participant in Wednesday's practice with his right shoulder.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: I honestly think, and uh, you know this is I
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: think we were head of this direction no matter what
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: we had Doctor Chow on Patriots Unfiltered earlier Alex and
- 1:10:50Speaker 5: he said the same exact thing. The Robert Splain injury
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: is the injury we should be talking about. I understand.
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: I said that last week. I understand that that's not
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: an injury to the start in quarterbacks throwing shoulder a
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: week before the Super Bowl. I get that it's not
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: as sexy or as important necessarily in some ways. But
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: Robert Splain did not practice today for the paper.
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: He was the only player.
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: Harold Landry just to throw in they complete the news.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: Harold Landry limited as well.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: Yeah, so it sounds like maybe Landry's going to try to.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: But Splaine did say today that he plans to play.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: But I guess the question is even if he plays, like,
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: is he one hundred percent Probably not.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: Yeah, So, I honestly I'm not trying to be like,
- 1:11:29Speaker 5: you know, different or anything with this.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: I just think the Splain not being different.
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: I've been saying the same thing.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: It's a bigger deal, like I Drake may know and
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: we know what they look like without Splain.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: Now some of that was without Milton Williams Tipe, but yeah, no,
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: I'm I'm with you on that, especially now he's upgrade
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: to fall I I thought Splayne said. I want to
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: find the quote because I know I retweeted earlier, and
- 1:11:50Speaker 4: then I want to get into something real quick from
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: that interview we just did. Splaine said, via Zach Cox's
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: one hundred percent confident he'll be able to play on Sunday.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: But I guess that doesn't set to a level, right
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: And you know, if he's out there but he's sixty percent,
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: did he become more of a liability. I guess that's
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: part of the conversation.
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: So I think that it's fascinating.
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:12:13Speaker 5: I mentioned we had doctor chow on earlier, and I
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: think one of the things that he really was able
- 1:12:17Speaker 5: to outline for us is the discussion that happens in
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: terms of, you know, if we have two guys that
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: are active that are dealing with injuries, if now both
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: guys can't play at their full tilt or their compromise
- 1:12:30Speaker 5: or they go down and just get out there and
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: they just.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: Can't they can't do it.
- 1:12:35Speaker 5: You know, they can't give it a go against very
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: difficult There could be a world where the Patriots might
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: need to pick, right, like whether it's Landry or Splain
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: that's active in this game. You know, I lean it
- 1:12:47Speaker 5: still even though he's not practicing, I still lean it
- 1:12:50Speaker 5: towards it being explained. I just think that he's been
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: a healthier player. You know, Landry's been dealing with this
- 1:12:55Speaker 5: for months and months. But yeah, that that that's really
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: right now is the number one question is you know,
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: is Roberts play gonna be healthy?
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: I think Drake Mayschulder is gonna be just fine.
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: And I said this and I'll say it again, it's
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: week twenty one. Nobody's like really fully healthy. We throw
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: around the term one hundred percent. Nobody's one hundred percent
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: this time here. Even the kickers and punters and backup
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: quarterback have their bumps and bruises at this time of
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: the year.
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: Really realistically, for this time of the year, I think
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: he's relatively fine. But Splain and we've talked a lot
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: about it. You know they're gonna have some issues against
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: that outside zone and maybe you're not gonna stop it
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: at the line of scrimmage, but then you need that
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: cleanup crew to come in and hold it to a
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: two to three yard run. And that's what they've really
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: missed with that. Robert Splaine and Kenneth Walker is a
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: physical running back. He wins tackles, he picks up hitting yardage,
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: he picks up yards after the contact. I've talked about
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: this when they lost the Bills and then have Splain.
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: In that game, they would hit James Cook two or
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: three yards past the line of scrimmage, but it would
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: be a five yard run because he's pushing the guy
- 1:13:53Speaker 4: over in winning the tackle, and Robert Splain is very
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: good about not letting that happen to him and at
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: the very least being a stalemate if not pushing the
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: running back backwards.
- 1:14:02Speaker 3: So it's a keep you.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: They miss him, especially against this offense. They miss him
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: along those lines. Deep guys having to come up because
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: I want to answer. I want you to.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: Answer my question.
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: Yeah, who is the Chris Matthews or Malcolm Butler. My
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: pick was Tong.
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: My pick was Tonga, And I I think the biggest
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: reason why is I remember going back to fifty three again.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: I remember the SoundBite. I think it was in NFL
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: films like what you know what they always do, like
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: the micd up from the Super Bowl, and I remember
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: Belichick on the sideline talking to the defensive line and saying,
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: get vertical, Get vertical, get vertical, because the Rams were
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: trying to run the stretch play. They're trying to get
- 1:14:39Speaker 5: outside and they wanted to interior guys to get penetration
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: and get vertical. The one thing that you know he's
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: good at eating blocks too, But I think Tonga is
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: a better vertical, get off the ball kind of player
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: if he can come in and he can kind of,
- 1:14:54Speaker 5: you know, cave in the middle of the line and
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: press that that pocket that the running back is trying
- 1:14:59Speaker 5: to delay, delay and make that read. You know that him,
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, like Corey Durden, Like those guys
- 1:15:07Speaker 5: can wreck their run game.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: They really can now.
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: So Corey Durton would be like in the same Candy
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: Milton mill Williams obviously very much in this category. Like
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: Hires Tong. I feel like has kind of become a
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: known name this year. Corey Durden having a big game.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: The other guy I'm looking at, I can give you
- 1:15:21Speaker 4: one on the other side.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: Of the ball.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: Yeah, Jack Westover. He's been around all year and just
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: kind of been there, and I you know he hasn't
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: been He's adjusting the fullback and that's clear. Yeah, him
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: randomly having some big catcher setting some big block or something.
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: And I'm gonna go so we him in the flat
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: kind of thing, right, exactly like Schultz the detections against Patriots. Yeah,
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: and I'll parlay.
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: This one further.
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: So Westover's the Seattle guy playing for the Patriots. Yeah,
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: and got Jake Bobo, the North Shore guy playing for
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: the Seattle. One of those guys is gonna have a
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: huge play in this game.
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: I'm telling you we're gonna have a in the NFC Championship.
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: I think it was his first touchdown of the season.
- 1:16:00Speaker 4: We're gonna have a Cam Schlitzler moment potentially with Jake Bobo.
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: Don't bring that guy's name up, you know how I
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: feel about that.
- 1:16:07Speaker 4: Has been really good talking about it. Yeah, I've actually
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: enjoyed talking.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: To I like Bobo.
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: So Patriots injury report, I'll just read it out in
- 1:16:15Speaker 5: the there's not that reddit. There's not very many names
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: on it. Roberts Plain was a d MP. Herold Landry
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: limited with that knee.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: They are Munford limited with a knee, Joshua Farmer full
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: for the hamstring, and Drake may full with the right shoulder.
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: So Terrell Jennings is window closed. He's not gonna be
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: he reverted back to injury reserve. Joshua Farmer can still
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: be active now. They've had such great success with the
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: mix on the defensive line. They've been rolling with Lenny
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: t has been a big player for them. Larry Taylor
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: down the three. I don't think that that's gonna change.
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: But that's the injury report for the Patriots. You don't
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: usually on the show for the injury report, so that
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: was a little different, different nugget.
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: Let's get back to some of these phones. Let's get the.
- 1:16:57Speaker 5: People involved a little bit here. Morrell Muriel is in
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: San Francisco. That's Morrell. Oh, I said your name correctly.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I know you did.
- 1:17:14Speaker 5: All right, call us back and we'll get you, try
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: to get you again.
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: Nate is in Connecticut. What's up, Nate? Nate? Nate?
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: You know it is an hour on hold. Maybe that's
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: why Mark is in Connecticut.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: What's up? Mark?
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: We're just getting rid of all the people that have
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: been on hold for an hour plus.
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: Mark.
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: You there, Yes, I'm here, guys.
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: Lets do it. What's up? Mark?
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: So just wanted to start off by saying thank you
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: for everything this whole season.
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: Just wanted to say that, you know, it's been.
- 1:17:47Speaker 3: A heck of a ride and happy to do it.
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: Man. I am so psyched for this game.
- 1:17:54Speaker 7: Score.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: I got two things. My score prediction. I'm actually gonna
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: go with the Seattle Sea game from back in twenty fourteen,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: twenty eight to twenty four I'm gonna actually go with
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: that score, the same one. And then the other thing is,
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: I know this is going to be a big topic
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: for the off season, but mark my word, Max Crosby
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: will be a new England Patriot this offseason. Love you boys,
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Let's go win it.
- 1:18:21Speaker 3: Thanks Mark, thanks for the call.
- 1:18:22Speaker 5: It does feel like Max Crosby has been very vocally
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: public about his support of Mike Rabels Well.
- 1:18:30Speaker 4: Diana Orsini said today on ninety eight five, straight up,
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: he told her he wants to not.
- 1:18:35Speaker 3: Just he wants to me Patriot, he wants to play
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: for Mike rabel Yeah, it.
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: Sounds like and you could just see it, like you
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: could see those two personalities being a perfect you know,
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: sort of combination or whatever you want to call it marriage.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: Would you trade, because we are assuming the Patriots are
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: going to win this game on today, would you trade
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: the thirty second overall pick in the draft?
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: I would tell you this, even worst case scenario, I
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: would trade the thirty first and certainly the thirty second,
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: and you're not gonna draft a better player in that
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: spot than Max Crosby. You have the financial FlexIt. Although
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: he doesn't need a new contract. He just kind of
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: hates Vegas, right, This isn't a contract thing, all right,
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: so he's paid.
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: I mean, look, I like some of the edge rushers
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: we're talking about down there, but Max Crosby, Crosby or
- 1:19:19Speaker 4: Romelo Height.
- 1:19:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: And also this isn't that we're no longer in the well.
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: You know, he's younger, and he is the ceiling. No
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: Patriots are and win down mode regardless of what happens
- 1:19:27Speaker 4: on Sunday, even they win the super Bowl. We want
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: him to be back, right. I want to do the
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: show here again next year, So yes, you you absolutely
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: make that move.
- 1:19:36Speaker 3: It won't be physically here, but I get it here radio.
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: Right, it's LA next year, right, yeah, Chris California.
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: You know you love LA.
- 1:19:44Speaker 4: You you are such an LA guy. All Right, we'll
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: all enjoy the Nashville, the inevitable Nashville super Bowl, and
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: the inevitable Chicagos and Chicago. Yeah, the Nashville super Bowl
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: is gonna rule.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: Oh god, it'd be so cold in Chicago if there's
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: Super Bowl.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: I mean they're building an indoor building. Okay, I'm talking
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: about the the I know, but no, but you're like,
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: you're acting like they're not gonna get one.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: They're gonna get oh god, the national one will be cool.
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: But I'm we're both all in on Maxican. Can I
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: can I add another layer to this because it's probably
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: not just a first. I don't think it's two firsts,
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: but it's probably not just a first. Is there a
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: move where you tag Calevon Chase saw On so you
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: can include him in that trade? If the Raiders are like, well,
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: we need a guy back to step into.
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: That, sure, I would wonder like ideally I would pair
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: him with.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: Caleb Chase Well, the Raiders did right, they had they
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: had I would do that too.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: The year before Chase On came here, Uh, I hear you?
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Though, you know, maybe it's Anthony Jennings is the is
- 1:20:45Speaker 5: another guy that could.
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: Well I was talking to somebody about the other day,
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: and let's say he has a big game on Sunday.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Maybe it's not the franchise tag. His Chase On played
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: himself into being a tag player. Maybe gets the transition tag.
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: Yeah he could, he he he very well might because
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: that market's gonna get silly.
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: Right, so he's gonna get twenty million.
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: The only way to kind of control that, especially if
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: he has a big game in the Super Bowl, is
- 1:21:07Speaker 5: to tag him in and put a cap on how
- 1:21:09Speaker 5: much it can possibly be with the tag, you know,
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: in some way shape.
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: And it buys you time and then you can again
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: you can extend him or if you have to trade.
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: Who was I think that was Brian Hines we were
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: on the other day, Uh, compared to like, he's this
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: year's Josh Sweat. Yeah, Josh Sweat played on her also
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: played next to Milton Williams. By the way, Milton Williams
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: getting guys paid played next to Milton Williams looked really
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: good but didn't necessarily have the pedigree, but he still
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: got paid. Yeah, you know, it could be could be
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: something similar to that. Meanwhile, we all wanted Josh Sweat.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: Jason has had a better year, right.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I think sweathead.
- 1:21:39Speaker 5: I don't remember exactly what Josh Witt's done, but Jason's
- 1:21:41Speaker 5: had a great year.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: Was there? I mean the Cardinals were a tough follow
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: this year outside of that one game where Jakobe Verssett
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: broke the passing record. Yeah, had twelve sacks, he was solid.
- 1:21:49Speaker 5: But all right, let's get back to morell. No, I
- 1:21:52Speaker 5: keep saying morel now Murrell in San Francisco?
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: Is that Muriel?
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: Nope, Nope, still not there, going once, going twice?
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: All right, that's okay.
- 1:22:04Speaker 5: I got a few more notes on on the Seahawks
- 1:22:07Speaker 5: game here, Alex, because I.
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: Just think let's still call into well, yes, I just.
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: Mean like transitioning off this the caller situation. So I
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: want to talk I don't think we've talked to you know,
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: our guests for great and they did a great job
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: outlining this game. The one thing that I want to
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: talk a little bit more about that I think is
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: something we haven't touched on quite a bit, is uh
- 1:22:27Speaker 5: Mike McDonald in this pressure scheme that he brings to
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: the table.
- 1:22:31Speaker 3: So they do a great job.
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: They don't blitz a lot, but when they do blitz,
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: it almost always gets home. They're number one in the
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: league in EPA when they blitz, but they're only twenty
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: fifth in the league and the rate in which they blitz,
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: So they don't blitz a.
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: Ton, right, they don't, but they're effective when they do.
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: When they are highly effective when they do. They also
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: simulate or like scheme up pressure a lot where they're
- 1:22:53Speaker 5: going to kind of show pressure one way, drop it out,
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: bring it from other places. So they really cook you
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: up like this is uh, this is I think when
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: we start talking about the defenses, the great defenses in
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: the NFL, and is this the best defense Seattle or
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: is Houston the best defense. I think Houston has slightly
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: better top end talent than Seattle. I don't think Seattle
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: has a Willie Anderson. You know, Devin Witherspoon's a great player.
- 1:23:19Speaker 5: But I think Stinking might be a little bit better.
- 1:23:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you know that sort of thing. The scheme, it's spread.
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: Out they have. They have all pros at all three levels.
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: They have the second most all pros in the league.
- 1:23:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:28Speaker 5: I don't think the scheme is particularly close. I think
- 1:23:30Speaker 5: the Seattle scheme is way better.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: Yeah, and then the Houston. The Houston scheme is just
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: the talent. The Houston scheme is just we're better. We
- 1:23:39Speaker 4: talked about this. They don't hide it because they don't
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: need to. Seattle's talented, but they it's like some like
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: uh like Max seasoning.
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:49Speaker 5: So I think the biggest thing that you see with them,
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: they kind of do two different things. They have this
- 1:23:53Speaker 5: one pressure that's a pick pressure where they basically they
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: rush six five or six skies and then they run these
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: big games, like these giant stunts where like three guys
- 1:24:04Speaker 5: are going one way, four guys or their three guys
- 1:24:06Speaker 5: are going the other way, and it's this whole like
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: coordinated a way to kind of warp the pocket. Yeah,
- 1:24:12Speaker 5: and that I think is maybe one of the coolest
- 1:24:16Speaker 5: like when it when it works, and when you see
- 1:24:18Speaker 5: them and you just didn't do that. I'm like the
- 1:24:21Speaker 5: coordination that it takes, the coaching that it takes to
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: coordinate is six guys to execute that scheme perfectly like that.
- 1:24:30Speaker 5: It's it's like it's like pretty like it's cool to
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: watch on the film.
- 1:24:34Speaker 3: So they do that. The other thing that they.
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: Do a lot of is you know, I would call
- 1:24:38Speaker 5: them creepers, you know, call them simulated pressures where they
- 1:24:41Speaker 5: drop guys off the line of scrimmage and they're gonna
- 1:24:43Speaker 5: like blitz the nickel or they're gonna blitz the safety
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: and then they're gonna drop the end out, you know,
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: and so they kind of maintain the numbers and coverage
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: that way, so they're not it's not an all out
- 1:24:53Speaker 5: blitzer and not really leaving the back end ad vulnerable.
- 1:24:56Speaker 3: Now that all that.
- 1:24:57Speaker 5: Being said, they tend to blitz from one side and
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: drop from the opposite side. So the one area of
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: the field that I've seen on film that's a little
- 1:25:07Speaker 5: bit vulnerable with that is you can throw it right
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: at the blitz, like if you can see the blitz
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: coming from where it's coming from. Those are all free acts.
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: There's nothing underneath it right there. So there's there's gonna
- 1:25:18Speaker 5: be a defender over the top. Usually it's gonna be
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: like quarters or cover two to that side of the field.
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: But there's not gonna be a short zone player.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: So like there's gonna be slants, there's gonna be skinny posts,
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: there's gonna be options underneath that. Now it's easier said
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: than done, no to anticipate that and understand all that.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: But I think that that's the number one thing we
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: talked about.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: Drake may kind of extending plays a little bit, But
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: I said this earlier on pu McDonald's blitz package is.
- 1:25:47Speaker 3: The it thing in the NFL.
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: Like you look across the league at all these other defenses,
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: they are all running his pressures now you know he
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: kind of him and Jesse Minter, I would say, or
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: the guys similar, Yeah, that have sort of pioneer this
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: kind of defense of style of like Fangio quarters kind
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: of stuff, but also like having pressure at your disposal.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: You know, I guess you know, long winded way of saying,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: you know, how do you beat this blitz package? What
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: are you expect them to do upfront? I mentioned Hermandra
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: Stevenson being heavily involved in all this. That would be
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: my one hesitation about this being a big Trevon Henderson
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: game is the back that's on the field is going.
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: To have to be prepared, yeah, to protect any and
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: it's not I think some people don't understand, like, oh, well,
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: just put Trebon Henderson out there for the plays where
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: you're putting six in the pattern or the tight ends blocking.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: You're like, you don't need.
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: Him into block, and like in theory you can do that.
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: But if you suddenly need to check into a play
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: where the back is blocking, like you have to have
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: that option. You have to give Drake made that option
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: at the line of scrimmage. I how do you stay
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: out of it? And this is maybe how Henderson gets
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: more involved, and it's it's it sounds simple, but it's not.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: You don't get into obvious passing situations you'll get in
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: a third seven or longer. You gotta stay ahead of
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: the sticks in this one. That's so, so so important.
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: If they can stay ahead of the sticks, it limits
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: the Seahawk's ability to go into some of those pure
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: pass heels and things like that, and that might be
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: mean running with football, and that's you go back to
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: Andre Stevenson because he's the better guy at just getting
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: three or four yards and that's given to him rather
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: than maybe losing yards trying to set up the big play.
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: So I think that's first and foremost. You gotta stay
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: on schedule. That's always a hallmark of Josh m McDaniel's
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: offense anyway, but I think especially in this game, it's
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: something you've got to do. The running backs and pass
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: protection I think are very important. And then I'll go
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: back to what we talked about earlier in the show,
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: Drake May running, because if Drake May start taking off,
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: it's gonna do two things. It impacts the willingness to
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: call some of those line games because you're gonna lose
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: contain when you run those it's just naturally what's gonna happen.
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: That's gonnappen every time. It's gonna happen more than you
- 1:27:48Speaker 4: wanted to, And it's just the natural clock of those
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: pass rushers. And they are going to be hesitant to
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: be as aggressive as they want to be because the
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: you know, the third or fourth time Drake may zips
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: by your ear and goes from fifteen yards, you're gonna
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: say enough of that. I'm not letting this kid do
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: that to me anymore. But now that slows down your rush.
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: So those three things are how you're gonna offset it.
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: You're not gonna cancel it out like they're gonna get
- 1:28:10Speaker 4: theirs on the blitz. But I think you can offset
- 1:28:13Speaker 4: it by doing those things.
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: So another thing that I think is big, you know,
- 1:28:16Speaker 5: in terms of this game, you mentioned being on schedule.
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: You know, first down I think is the most important
- 1:28:22Speaker 5: down in this entire game. Yes, on both sides of
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: the ball, because I think all the same things can
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: be said, and maybe even more so about Sam Darnold
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: being off scheduled. Yeah, you know, Sam Donald, when you
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: look at the numbers, I think one of the biggest
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: sort of again, you know, I mentioned earlier about Milton
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: Williams and Christian Barmore against their interior offensive line of
- 1:28:44Speaker 5: Seattle's is kind of like the big you know, uh,
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: personnel mismatch in this game that favors the Patriots the
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: other like sort of situational one that favors the Patriots heavily.
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: The Patriots defense this year number one in the league
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: in third and long defense, number one fifteen percent of
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: the time, roughly third and one defense.
- 1:29:03Speaker 4: And Seattle's not a great third down offense.
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: Sam Donald and Seattle and third and long offense thirty
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: first in the NFL. So the Patriots are first on
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: third and long. Seattle is thirty first on third and
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: long offensively, So if the Patriots can get Seattle into
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: third and long, They're gonna have some success on defense.
- 1:29:22Speaker 3: That's what that's telling you.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: I still, you know, go back to I don't think
- 1:29:26Speaker 5: that Sam Donald is to the point now where he
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: is like sort of you know, bulletproof when it comes
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: to not having some of the bells and whistles of
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: a scheme, you know, play action moving the pocket first down,
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: you know, success rates and his play action per drop back,
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: you know EPA per drop back on play action number
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: one in the NFL.
- 1:29:48Speaker 3: Off of play action, he's dynamite.
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: Off of play action, you start to take away some
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: of that click Kubiak match dust here. Yeah, and then
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: maybe you can kind of have some advantages there. If
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: the Patriot can get Seattle into third and long and
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: making them sells state out of third and long, I
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: think they're gonna win the game.
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Now that's easier said than done.
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: Like it sounds simple when I lay it right like that,
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: it's much easier said than done. But to me, first
- 1:30:13Speaker 5: down is the most important down in this game.
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: Something that kind of ties into that. Uh, the Seahawks
- 1:30:19Speaker 4: are not a good red zone offense. Yeah, bottom third
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: of the league fifty four. The Patriots red zone defensive
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: struggled at times, but they've been good against the bad units.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: They just really struggle against the good ones. So the
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: Patriots might be able to get some more red zone
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: success too. And that goes to the I think along
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: those same lines of in those critical situations, I think
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: the Patriots have the advantage.
- 1:30:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: Okay, the other thing I wanted to talk to you
- 1:30:44Speaker 5: about specifically, I haven't even talked.
- 1:30:46Speaker 3: We haven't really talked this week.
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: We haven't been because you're staying down in beautiful San Jose.
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: Santa Clara, Santa Clara. No, everybody keeps.
- 1:30:53Speaker 5: On asking me, like, how's Bart, Like, have you guys
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: gotten out yet?
- 1:30:57Speaker 3: We have.
- 1:30:57Speaker 5: I swear to God, I know people aren't gonna believe
- 1:31:00Speaker 5: us when we say this.
- 1:31:01Speaker 3: We have been on separate planets.
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: I saw I think for like ten minutes at opening night. Yeah,
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: I don't think I saw you availability today.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: I think I see you more at home when we
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: are like doing regular Patriots availability during the season, then
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: I've seen you.
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: I didn't really talk to you an either availability yesterday
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: or today. So you didn't go to the media party
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: last night, No, I do.
- 1:31:21Speaker 3: I wasn't there.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: It was it was okay, it was not the aquarium
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: in Atlanta. That was awesome.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: You had He had a great time.
- 1:31:28Speaker 5: He had to there was like what was it like
- 1:31:30Speaker 5: an orca or something like that, and he was just
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: staring at that thing.
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: No, that was you, he was like, Oh, No, that
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: was you. You got really into the dolphins.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: I remember, because they had these dolphins that were like
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: I'm sorry, I'm gonna sound I'm gonna.
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: I wasn't gonna tell this story, but go ahead.
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: I'm gonna do it.
- 1:31:46Speaker 5: This is really a little what's the word, like, you know,
- 1:31:49Speaker 5: hip hisstory right now? The dolphins swim like miles and
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: miles in the wild, and these poor dolphins were in
- 1:31:55Speaker 5: this like tank and I was like, these dolphins like
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: they're peak, captain, you gotta let them fly.
- 1:32:03Speaker 3: And the terrible Evan confronted one of the.
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: Museum works over the size of the tank, like this
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: poor I mean, she was probably just out of college.
- 1:32:11Speaker 4: She was a tour guide, she wasn't a biologist. Nothing
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: she could have done about it. And Evan was furious
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: in the size of the tank.
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: It was these dolphins swim, I'm gonna do that.
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: You wanted her to do something about it?
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: Now, I asked her politely.
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: You got a little, you asked politely.
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: At first.
- 1:32:30Speaker 5: I asked her if these dolphins were like being nursed
- 1:32:33Speaker 5: back to health, because that would be a good reason,
- 1:32:36Speaker 5: that would be a good reason, you know, for them
- 1:32:38Speaker 5: to be uh in you.
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: Know what's it called in captivity?
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: Yeah, captivity is that they got injured or something like
- 1:32:45Speaker 5: that and they saved their life, which if that's the case,
- 1:32:48Speaker 5: and thank you for your service to the Atlanta Aquarium. Now,
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: if you just cage these dolphins and put them in
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: a tank, then I would have been here.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: The thing I was was, I don't.
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: We're for me looking out for the wild like.
- 1:33:02Speaker 4: I know, good for you for looking out. It's just
- 1:33:04Speaker 4: that woman wasn't gonna be able to do anything about
- 1:33:05Speaker 4: it that moment.
- 1:33:07Speaker 5: Obviously, I didn't think she was gonna take the dolphin.
- 1:33:09Speaker 5: I would take it, but you kind of like looking
- 1:33:12Speaker 5: for to do something.
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: No, they had one of those exhibits they have like
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: zoos and aquariums where it's like the exhibit is like
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: shoulder high and then you can crawl underneath and stick
- 1:33:21Speaker 4: your head. And that was the the penguins in there,
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: and that was I'm a big penguins guy, like penguins,
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: So getting an eye to eye with the penguins it
- 1:33:29Speaker 4: was fun.
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: Well on Friday and Saturday, we'll be able to uh,
- 1:33:33Speaker 5: we'll be able to have.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: Some fun probably, I think so I'll bee it.
- 1:33:36Speaker 4: We're doing a sports ubuh pregame party. I think you
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: guys are doing once you is yours Friday, both nights
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: at both nights, both nights.
- 1:33:43Speaker 5: We have fan rallies. All that information. You can check
- 1:33:48Speaker 5: it out if you're in town. The question I wanted
- 1:33:50Speaker 5: to ask you about was about football and not about
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: Dolphins or anything like that. So I think the other thing,
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: and this is more big picture. How much of an
- 1:33:59Speaker 5: advantage do you give the Patriots in this matchup with
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: Mike Rabel and Josh McDaniels. Mike Rabel having played in four, right, four,
- 1:34:07Speaker 5: because he's on seven. Also, yep, four super bowls as
- 1:34:11Speaker 5: a player. Josh McDaniels, I think this is nine or
- 1:34:14Speaker 5: ten him coordinating six.
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: He wasn't here for the first coordinating.
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: It's not less. It's being on the staff for Super Bowls.
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: I mean he's been here for all six wins.
- 1:34:28Speaker 3: I know that. Yeah. Yeah, and then he Willy O'Brien
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: was the coordinator in eleven, so that.
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: So he just missed that one. Ye, So yes, this
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: is ninth.
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: Yeah, how much this is Mike McDonald's first roado Yeah,
- 1:34:41Speaker 5: it's Clint Kubiak's first rodeo.
- 1:34:43Speaker 3: Let's start there because I have a follow up.
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: Yeah Kubiak, Okay, I think I was going to ask
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: you the same thing to followup, But I don't know,
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: and I mean this is no disrespect to Mike Rabel.
- 1:34:51Speaker 4: I don't look at the Rabel thing as as much
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: of an advantage because it was a long time ago
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: and the super bowls different and Vrabel's even talked about
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: this this week, the first one he played, and they
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: didn't have the weekend between, yeah, and it it makes
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: a major difference. Look, yeah, we kind of were saying
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: we weren't worried about Drake made shoulder earlier. Without the
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: weekend between, yeah, that would have been I think a
- 1:35:08Speaker 4: much bigger issue.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: So that is not to get bogged down by the
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: one super Bowl didn't have the weekend between because of
- 1:35:14Speaker 5: nine to eleven, right, it was, it was scheduled, they
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: didn't but.
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: They still didn't and that's you know, so it's a
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: very different And I think also preparing for the seven
- 1:35:24Speaker 4: Super Bowl, I don't know, I didn't cover the team.
- 1:35:26Speaker 4: I would from the little stories they've heard and just
- 1:35:28Speaker 4: from what I would think, that super Bowl was a
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: different beast. I think preparing for that super Bowl was
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: a different animal because.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: Of what was on the line.
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: So it's look, I trust Mike, We're able to get
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: the team Ruddy. I loved what he said this week.
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: He got to ask yesterday like what from the Dynasty
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: teams do you do you preach this team? And he
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: said what Dynasty? And he played up the underdog angle
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: and that Steph Digg's comment about we're just a group
- 1:35:50Speaker 4: of players nobody wanted and that whole thing. I love
- 1:35:52Speaker 4: how Rabels handled it. In terms of Super Bowl experience,
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: Josh McDaniel's huge, huge advantage. And I'll go back to say,
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: the top of the shows I think have a definitive
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: I will say definitive, and the Seahawks coaching staff is
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: not bad. Definitive coaching advantage, definitive quarterback advantage, and I
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: Josh McDaniel's experience.
- 1:36:11Speaker 5: Yeah, the definitive coaching angle to me is interesting. I
- 1:36:15Speaker 5: definitely give the experience to the Patriots, even though he
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: was as a player.
- 1:36:20Speaker 3: I think that at least.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: He's it's not nothing. I just he's touched grass out
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: of super Bow. It's not nothing, for sure. I just
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: think it's it's two different levels. What mcdalel's experience offers
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: versus what Vrabel's experience offers.
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: I give a little bit more credence or credit.
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: I guess I should say to the schematic chops of
- 1:36:38Speaker 5: Seattle's coaching staff. But I think what the difference is
- 1:36:42Speaker 5: to me is that McDonald is more, uh, I guess
- 1:36:47Speaker 5: in that school of he's such a good schemer and
- 1:36:51Speaker 5: he's so prepared and he's such a good coach that
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: players have confidence that he's gonna push the right buttons.
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: I don't think he is a button pusher? Does that
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: make sense? Like Rabel is a motivational.
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: Well and that and it's not just a motivational force.
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: And this is where maybe you go to Rabel's experience
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: and he talked last week that this is something Joshuac
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: Daniels has helped him with.
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: Yeah, planning for a.
- 1:37:13Speaker 4: Super Bowl not game planning. Planning literally, when are we
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: going to practice where?
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: You know where?
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: How are we gonna do work at You're at a hotel,
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: You're you're miles away from your facility. How are we
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: gonna run this? How are we gonna win up run that?
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: How often do we want these guys on the bus?
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: What's the curf you're gonna be you know? How are
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: we gonna handle our media responsibilities? Things like that? It's
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: a whole different beast. And I'm not saying Mike McDaniel
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: can't handle it. I I don't know. I don't know,
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: And we'll see how he did. Maybe he did great.
- 1:37:39Speaker 3: Maybe, I mean obviously he has John Schneider to lean on.
- 1:37:42Speaker 5: Yeah, but I I just look at that as the advantage.
- 1:37:46Speaker 5: I have a lot of respect for Mike McDonald the schemer,
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: and have a lot of respect for Clint Kubiak the schemer. Now,
- 1:37:53Speaker 5: I would probably give Josh a slight edge against Kubiak
- 1:37:56Speaker 5: just because of experience.
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: It's a little more slight nine super Bowl dude.
- 1:38:00Speaker 3: Well in terms of experience, sure, it's a lot more experience.
- 1:38:03Speaker 5: No, I'm know, I'm saying I but like schematically, just
- 1:38:06Speaker 5: x's and no's wise, I think Kobe Act's pretty good.
- 1:38:08Speaker 3: I think he's very good now.
- 1:38:11Speaker 5: A lot of it is the base of you know,
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: what the Shanahan tree does and you.
- 1:38:14Speaker 3: Know all that stuff. But I think he's very, very
- 1:38:17Speaker 3: good now.
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: The other new bit of news that came out this
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: week that he did not decline to talk about Kouobi
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: Act did, but he is in line.
- 1:38:26Speaker 3: It sounds like to be the next head coach of
- 1:38:28Speaker 3: the Las Vegas rate.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: Yeah, Brady high at him to distract him to help
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: the pas.
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: Oh yeah, because Brady's been really pro paid.
- 1:38:37Speaker 4: Yeah really and also one of his best friends by
- 1:38:39Speaker 4: the way, on the other side.
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: So, uh so we know how this goes. We saw
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: this before. You know, Matt Patricia was getting ready to
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: leave for Detroit, Charlie Weiss and Robo Cornell were getting
- 1:38:51Speaker 5: ready to leave at you O four. You know, we've
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: been around this block before with you know, all the
- 1:38:57Speaker 5: Patriots played people Josh McDaniels, you know, as well, say
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: Bill Parcels there, sure, well, very different scenario.
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: Yeah, he had it. He was ready for the next job.
- 1:39:07Speaker 5: So I don't I think that that's like a very
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: small percentage of a factors.
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: The super Bowl comes down small percentages.
- 1:39:17Speaker 5: But I know this is up your reality. So how
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: much do you care? What kind of what kind of
- 1:39:24Speaker 5: percentage are you at? Because you know me, I'm like,
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: it's like it's in footnote We're not.
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Gonna win the Patriots game. It's not.
- 1:39:29Speaker 4: But you know, piled on top of other things, it's
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: a it's another thing to deal with. You don't want
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: to be dealing with things this week and as there's
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: always a couple of annoying storylines when your team's in
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: the Super Bowl every year. Evan we we Patriots fans
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: know this very well, and some of them are a
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: real pain in the ass, like the Flake Gates. Some
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: aren't look as as frustrating as the drake and shoulder
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: injury thing was last week. The first half of this week.
- 1:39:56Speaker 4: He's a full participant today if he goes out there
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: and he is full range of motion and they can
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: call their full offense. It was an annoying story, but
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: it was really kind of nothing, right. Yeah, I would
- 1:40:06Speaker 4: rather my quarterback have like a you know, not like, oh,
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: his shoulder was a little sore on Monday, but he's
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: fine on Sunday. Then the offensive coordinator's starting to think
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: ahead of who's gonna bring with him Vegas and uh oh,
- 1:40:17Speaker 4: by the way, the owners might sell the team, and
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: who knows where any of us are gonna be in
- 1:40:20Speaker 4: three years, And there's that, Like I put those in
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: the same basket of it's just another thing that you
- 1:40:27Speaker 4: have to worry about that's on your mind, and you
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: can say block out the noise, and you know, I
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: think for the Patriots and Drake May's shoulder for the Seahawks.
- 1:40:35Speaker 4: It's those things. Drake may shoulder thinks not great, but
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: the shoulder can heal over the course of the week.
- 1:40:39Speaker 4: And it sounds like that's what's happening. Klint Kubiak's not
- 1:40:42Speaker 4: suddenly gonna spur the Raiders, and frankly, if he does,
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: that becomes another storyline that probably becomes pretty annoying. So
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: it's not nothing. It's not gonna side the game, but
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: I don't think it's nothing either.
- 1:40:54Speaker 5: So I think the number one thing that you hit
- 1:40:57Speaker 5: on there that could be a slight factor is obviously
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: you have to start building out of coaching staff right
- 1:41:03Speaker 5: with the Raiders. Now, can Brady is it spit Spy
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: Tech does their GM Yeah, uh don't. Can those guys
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: kind of do that for him? He gives them a
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: list and they start calling, you know guys and checking off,
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: you know guys off the list and things of that nature,
- 1:41:23Speaker 5: I suppose. But that's the number one thing when you
- 1:41:26Speaker 5: We've seen it now two years in a row, so
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: we know, you know. The number one that you do
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: when you get hired as a head coach, The first
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: step is starting to fill out your staff.
- 1:41:35Speaker 3: Now he's gonna call the offense.
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: So that helps, right, Like he's the offensive coordinator and
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: the offensive.
- 1:41:39Speaker 3: Architect and we'll call the offense. So that definitely. Uh.
- 1:41:42Speaker 5: You know, with Rabel or with Drod Mayo, they had
- 1:41:45Speaker 5: to hire offensive coordinators and that was a major hire
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: in the process for them. This is a little bit different.
- 1:41:50Speaker 5: But you know, who's his defensive coordinator going to be?
- 1:41:54Speaker 5: Is his defensive coordinator a current Seattle assistant that he
- 1:41:57Speaker 5: is poaching from Seattle to bring.
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: With him to to Vegas.
- 1:42:01Speaker 5: Are McDonald and him having to spend time talking about
- 1:42:04Speaker 5: who are you taking with you?
- 1:42:05Speaker 3: Who are you're not taking with you?
- 1:42:07Speaker 4: Because are they maybe arguing about what that's gonna be?
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: Like, I like, how you trying to start that?
- 1:42:13Speaker 4: Oh again, It's just it's another thing you have to
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: deal with if you want to be able to say, ah,
- 1:42:17Speaker 4: he don't want to. This is going back to the
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: Josh McDaniel's thing. This is why Josh McDaniels is a
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: perfect unique scenario to get him his offensive coordinator not
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: going anywhere, not anytime soon. And if you know, year six,
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: Drake may he gets another head coaching job and look
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: on a hewan level. He wants me, he said he
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: would be interested in being a head coaching job. You
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: want him to get it right if he gets there.
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: I'm sorry if you If Drake May has like three
- 1:42:38Speaker 4: or four more MVP seasons, you should be able to
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: handle an offensive coordinator change at that point.
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:43Speaker 5: Yeah, So you know that that's a it's not nothing.
- 1:42:48Speaker 5: It's a it's not it's not a huge thing, but
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: it's not that thing. I do find it interesting. You
- 1:42:53Speaker 5: know that Kubiak his whole career arc. Obviously his father
- 1:42:59Speaker 5: is Gary Kubiak, and had a ton of success in
- 1:43:01Speaker 5: the league in Denver and all that stuff. Shanahan Tree,
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: you know, Mike Shanahan connected with Gary Kubiak. Clint Kubiak though,
- 1:43:11Speaker 5: you know last year in New Orleans, first, I want
- 1:43:13Speaker 5: to say, two to four games of the season, they
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: are just a wagon, like they scored like forty points
- 1:43:20Speaker 5: a game out of the gate. Then they started to
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: get some injuries and obviously their roster just wasn't that
- 1:43:27Speaker 5: talented to begin with, and it all kind of wore off.
- 1:43:30Speaker 5: Clint Kubiak then goes, you know, I think one of
- 1:43:33Speaker 5: the biggest hires from Mike McDonald.
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: He he fires Ryan Grubb as.
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: The offensive coordinator, who he originally brought with him to
- 1:43:41Speaker 5: Seattle as the offensive coordinator, hires Clint Kubiak Klink.
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: Kubiak has this great.
- 1:43:46Speaker 5: Season with Sam Darnold, whose you know, career renaissance is
- 1:43:49Speaker 5: just continuing, and the beat goes on, and now he's
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: head coach in the league, you know, And I just
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: that sort of meteoric rise, that skyrocketing up the ranks
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: a little bit, is is interest saying to me, because
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: you know, I I think that now you know it's
- 1:44:04Speaker 5: gonna move fast, you have to build a staff.
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: I'm we're already like the combines in.
- 1:44:09Speaker 4: Like right, you gotta get familiar with the Ross's.
- 1:44:11Speaker 3: In like three and a half weeks.
- 1:44:13Speaker 5: Like literally, uh, free agency is in a little bit
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: over a month, you know, and that these are all
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: things that are you know, going on for all these
- 1:44:21Speaker 5: teams that would be really interesting to see, you know
- 1:44:24Speaker 5: how much that matters?
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:44:26Speaker 5: I I do think the Patriots have a coaching advantage.
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: Maybe schematically, My brain is kind of just in the
- 1:44:32Speaker 5: x's and o's of it is, like it's not super lopsided,
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: but I think it's an advantage when you.
- 1:44:37Speaker 4: Pile everything else on it, it gets there, all right.
- 1:44:41Speaker 5: A couple more little things, then we'll wrap the show up.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: Stuff we're on late, back down so that we don't
- 1:44:49Speaker 5: have a ton of callers at this trying.
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: To fall Yeah, that would be hard.
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: I can't imagine that would be.
- 1:44:55Speaker 3: We're pretty, We're pretty.
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: What's your what's your fall asleep show? What's your goag to?
- 1:44:58Speaker 4: Like me to put this on the background? Put the
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: sleep mode on the TV?
- 1:45:01Speaker 3: Uh, it's a good question. I don't really do that.
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: Oh see, I can't sleep in silence anymore. I got
- 1:45:06Speaker 4: used to TV. The hotel I was at, I saw
- 1:45:08Speaker 4: I had to switch hotels because it was just a plan.
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: That's how we booked it. You've got to get rooms
- 1:45:12Speaker 4: where you can get them. The hotel did not have
- 1:45:14Speaker 4: a sleep function. That threw me off. That threw me
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: off big time.
- 1:45:17Speaker 3: What's your Hall of Fame take? But what do you
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: got to say about the Hall of Fame?
- 1:45:20Speaker 4: I mean, I saw you. I said it all last week.
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: But here's the fuck.
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: Let's do Robert Kraft the respect we did for Bill Belichick.
- 1:45:25Speaker 4: He's a Hall of Famer. We all know it, and
- 1:45:28Speaker 4: maybe this one hits a little less just because it's
- 1:45:30Speaker 4: not He wasn't first ballot. We've seen them snub him,
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: and maybe after Belichick, we kind of saw this coming
- 1:45:36Speaker 4: that he wasn't gonna get in. If Jerry Jones a
- 1:45:40Speaker 4: Hall of Famer, Yeah, what are we doing? I'll say
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: what I said about billlast week. I know what I saw.
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: I know what I saw for twenty years. And by
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: the way, yes, Bill is a huge part of it.
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: I don't want to take away from Bill, but how
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: many owners have been to the Super Bowl with three
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: different head coaches Parcels, Belichick and out rabel yep in
- 1:46:00Speaker 4: three different quarterbacks bledsoe Brady may so in wild turnover
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: that is insanely impressive. Turnover plus his number one argument
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: right in my opinion, I think, other than, of course,
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: the six banners that are hanging in July Stadium, which
- 1:46:18Speaker 4: is well, I think those are those are one in
- 1:46:19Speaker 4: the same.
- 1:46:20Speaker 5: But the fact but the fact that he did it,
- 1:46:23Speaker 5: has now done it three separate times.
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: He has rebuilt the Patriots three.
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: Well, and he essentially they rebuilt in the middle of
- 1:46:30Speaker 4: one of the coach quarterback combos too.
- 1:46:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but theyve he's essentially rebuilt three times.
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: He bought the team, you know, in the early nineties
- 1:46:39Speaker 5: high you know, uh, he didn't hire Parcels, right, I
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: think he inherited Parcels. I always forget that timeline. But
- 1:46:45Speaker 5: he he buys a team in the early nineties, goes.
- 1:46:50Speaker 4: To Super Bowl.
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: Yeah, it goes with this to uh with Bill Parcels
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: and Drew Blood. So that kind of fizzles out, hires
- 1:47:00Speaker 5: trades for Bill Belichick.
- 1:47:01Speaker 4: Yep, you have the first time.
- 1:47:03Speaker 5: But the greatest dynasty in the history of sports ensues.
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: Then that ends because a things, good things.
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: Happen to come to an end, although he extended that
- 1:47:11Speaker 4: probably eight years plus when its life span should have been.
- 1:47:13Speaker 5: And now here we are again now in the defense
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: not in the defense of not putting Robert Cruft in
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: the Hall of Thing, because there's no defense of that.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: No.
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: The voters, though, voted before the Patriots made the Super
- 1:47:23Speaker 5: Bowl this time.
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: So but but that'sart whant to bring in where I
- 1:47:25Speaker 4: think it's one A, one B because it's a contributor
- 1:47:28Speaker 4: category and you're not necessarily I don't think it's as
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: much contributing to the league as it is to the
- 1:47:34Speaker 4: team as it is, the organization, the media deals ending
- 1:47:39Speaker 4: the lockout. Jeff Saturday called him the man who saved football.
- 1:47:42Speaker 4: I mean, you know, I think he's played a part
- 1:47:44Speaker 4: in the international expansion too, right, He's played a hand
- 1:47:47Speaker 4: in that. And you know his as far as owners go, right,
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: he was never the face of the league and the
- 1:47:55Speaker 4: way like Tom Brady was the face of the league.
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: But as an owner, I mean it was him, It
- 1:47:59Speaker 4: was Jerry and it was everybody else.
- 1:48:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and it still is. And you look at.
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: The way the league grew when he and he still does.
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: But you look at the way the league has grown
- 1:48:11Speaker 4: with him playing such an integral part in the league
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: politics and the way these meta decisions are made. Forget
- 1:48:18Speaker 4: what he's done for the Patriots, and you shouldn't. I mean,
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: that's a huge part of it. What he's done for
- 1:48:23Speaker 4: the sport itself, in the league itself, in terms of
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: growing it and growing the brand and growing the business. Yeah,
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: it's I don't know how you don't put him in.
- 1:48:32Speaker 5: Right, And and all these things come back to especially
- 1:48:36Speaker 5: when you start to compare them to guys that are.
- 1:48:38Speaker 3: Already in right.
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: Exactly if it were hard, if we.
- 1:48:42Speaker 5: Do this with Rodney Harrison too, where it's like John
- 1:48:44Speaker 5: Lynch is in and Brian Dawkins is in, and like,
- 1:48:47Speaker 5: you know, obviously like guys like Reid and Pallamalu are
- 1:48:50Speaker 5: kind of, you know, in a better category in my opinion,
- 1:48:53Speaker 5: But like those guys, Lynch and Dawkins are very comparable
- 1:48:56Speaker 5: players to Rodney Harrison, and both those guys have gold jackets.
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: Rodney Harrison doesn't. Jerry Jones and Robert Kraft are very
- 1:49:03Speaker 5: comparable people in terms of what they've done for the league.
- 1:49:06Speaker 5: Roberts a lot more and they are and he's not
- 1:49:09Speaker 5: in right, and so it just that's the part that
- 1:49:11Speaker 5: doesn't make sense. We had Howard Baalzer is a long
- 1:49:14Speaker 5: time Pro Football Hall of Fame voter on Patriots Unfiltered
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: earlier and uh, he said he.
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: Voted, I don't remember what he said. I don't want to,
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: I don't want.
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: To guess fair go back and listen to it.
- 1:49:29Speaker 3: The thing that he said, I would imagine if he
- 1:49:31Speaker 3: came on here.
- 1:49:31Speaker 4: He voted yes, because he's not gonna put himself in
- 1:49:33Speaker 4: that ambush.
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: So the thing that he said in that I tried
- 1:49:36Speaker 5: to push back a little bit, but I didn't want
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: to be like hostile to.
- 1:49:41Speaker 3: The thing that he said was like he gave this long.
- 1:49:43Speaker 5: I mean, guys, this answer, Anthony Marine was like forty
- 1:49:47Speaker 5: five minutes long, this long, convoluted answer about the voting system.
- 1:49:53Speaker 3: And it's three you know, votes for.
- 1:49:55Speaker 5: Five people, and YadA, YadA, YadA, and it's a numbers game.
- 1:49:59Speaker 5: And it's like, be it's a numbers game either like
- 1:50:03Speaker 5: you really mean that.
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: He should be in or you don't.
- 1:50:05Speaker 5: Right, Like if it was you have three yes votes
- 1:50:08Speaker 5: out of five, Right, it's very easy to make Bill
- 1:50:11Speaker 5: Belichick and Robert Kraft your two yes votes.
- 1:50:13Speaker 3: It's not that hard, right, So that's the thing. The
- 1:50:15Speaker 3: system is they but.
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: They keep I feel like a lot of the Hall
- 1:50:18Speaker 5: of Fame voters now have just defaulted.
- 1:50:20Speaker 4: They're using the system as an excuse, and it looks deflective.
- 1:50:23Speaker 4: This is still bad, and it might keep a guy
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: like Mike Holmgren out or Mike Shanahan out because you
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: may say, Okay, the players have the weight. But if
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: you're asked the question out right, who's the more deserving
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Hall of Famer these five, you have to pick three
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: Bill Belichick, Robert Craft, Ken Anderson lg Elsie Greenwood and
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: Roger Craig. No offense to those players. It's not Belichick
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: and Craft are mots and I byther. I think Roger
- 1:50:51Speaker 4: Craig should be in. I thought he was in. He
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: would get my third vote. I'd vote for all three.
- 1:50:55Speaker 4: But you can't say, well, you know, these guys have
- 1:50:58Speaker 4: waited so long, and we got to make if they've
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: there's a reason they've waited. There's a reason they've waited,
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: and maybe that's just the process. And let the process
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: through the process of the process determina shouldn't get in,
- 1:51:09Speaker 4: don't tweak it. And now the process determines Belichick doesn't
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: get in, because that means process is broken. I know
- 1:51:14Speaker 4: what I saw. Belichick's all favor. He's not getting in
- 1:51:17Speaker 4: the issues with the process and the voters not with
- 1:51:19Speaker 4: Bill Belichick's same for Robert Kraft.
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: Okay, So the other thing that's gonna happen here that
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: this is going to have a really great shelf life
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: of like twenty four hours.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: But we can talk about it anyway on.
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: More than twenty four I think it's late tomorrow night.
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: For the live audience.
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: NFL Honors will be tomorrow night, on Thursday night here
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: in San Francisco. The Patriots are well represented in terms
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: of nominees.
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: Six over or five over six categories.
- 1:51:44Speaker 3: Yeah, four on over five or.
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: Five five five because it's Drake Rabel, McDaniels, digs Hendersons
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: five for six categories.
- 1:51:55Speaker 5: Yeah, so they they are all represented a sort of
- 1:51:58Speaker 5: nomination in terms of nominations.
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: Obviously they're working tomorrow night, so I think they still
- 1:52:04Speaker 3: go to that. They I don't think so if they win.
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: They will, so we won't get an acceptance speech.
- 1:52:10Speaker 3: They'll have a video.
- 1:52:11Speaker 4: They'll play a pre recorded that's gonna kind of suck
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: recording that when you don't know where they're not, you're
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: gonna win it. Part of what's good about those speeches.
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: They might be emotion at the moment. Oh maybe they
- 1:52:20Speaker 4: tell them like, hey, you want give us a video?
- 1:52:23Speaker 5: Yeah, so let's just go across the ballot. Yeah, well
- 1:52:29Speaker 5: first and foremost and start with I. I hunch total hunt.
- 1:52:33Speaker 5: I think Adam V. Terry is gonna get in the
- 1:52:35Speaker 5: Hall of Fame.
- 1:52:36Speaker 4: I think I'm not giving him anything at this point.
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: He should.
- 1:52:39Speaker 4: I'm not giving him anything at this point, but I'd
- 1:52:41Speaker 4: be right, he should be if I had to guess
- 1:52:43Speaker 4: him and Keikley massive snuffs if I had to guess.
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: I think both those guys are going in Row night,
- 1:52:49Speaker 5: all right, m v P. I think m v P
- 1:52:54Speaker 5: is gonna be really close.
- 1:52:55Speaker 4: I think it's gonna be Stafford. It's gonna be close.
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be Staffed.
- 1:52:58Speaker 4: They they wriggled or down last year to get Joshy
- 1:53:01Speaker 4: his MVP so we could get one. Ephasis on voting
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: because it was so fraudulent, and now they're going to
- 1:53:09Speaker 4: go back to the current, to the way they've always
- 1:53:12Speaker 4: done it.
- 1:53:12Speaker 3: So I agree. I think it will be Matthew Stafford.
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: I think off here's my hot take, yep, I think
- 1:53:18Speaker 4: he wins Offensive Player of the Year Drake.
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: So this is what I don't understand about this. It's
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: it's ass backwards. The award that he is more worthy
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: of is MVP, like he is the more valuable player.
- 1:53:34Speaker 5: Like that's the whole thing is And we had many
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: times on earlier she said that's why she voted for
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: Drake May because when you take Matthew Stafford with a
- 1:53:43Speaker 5: great run game and a great play caller in Sean McVay,
- 1:53:46Speaker 5: and a great defense on the other side of the ball.
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: You know who was the player that elevated his team in.
- 1:53:52Speaker 5: The y, who was the most valuable player to his
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: team is Drake May who was the most productive player.
- 1:54:00Speaker 3: I think you could probably make a better case for Steady.
- 1:54:03Speaker 3: Yeah no, you can't.
- 1:54:03Speaker 4: Well, stab you look at the numbers like that, so
- 1:54:08Speaker 4: that I can't.
- 1:54:09Speaker 3: So I have no idea.
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: What if Stafford. If Stafford was a finalist for Offensive
- 1:54:13Speaker 4: Player of the Year, I'd actually say I think Stafford
- 1:54:14Speaker 4: is gonna win it. This is a bigger picture. Take
- 1:54:16Speaker 4: that all right, Let's say the Josh Allen thing last
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: year was on the level, it's going to be a console.
- 1:54:20Speaker 4: It's going to become the MVP consolation. Well, because every
- 1:54:23Speaker 4: we have to coddle the quarterbacks and the quarterbacks have
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: to get everything, and eventually they're going to start giving
- 1:54:28Speaker 4: Defensive Player of the Year to the quarterbacks.
- 1:54:29Speaker 5: Somehow, Offensive Player of the Year should either be Jasent
- 1:54:32Speaker 5: or Puka.
- 1:54:33Speaker 3: I think it will probably end up being.
- 1:54:36Speaker 4: They We need to go back to non quarterbacks winning
- 1:54:39Speaker 4: m v P. That's not gonna happen, I know. But
- 1:54:41Speaker 4: but the reason the awards system, like like when you
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: were just like you have Walter Payton and m V. Pole,
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: Like we were just talking about with the sake quach
- 1:54:51Speaker 4: and one of last year and they want to yes
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: crazy and like we were just talking about with the
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: Hall of Fame. The system's broken. But that shouldn't bail
- 1:54:57Speaker 4: out the voters. It wouldn't be such.
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: An issue with them. It's left so an issue if.
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: They actually considered players at other positions. I'm just saying.
- 1:55:06Speaker 5: I I do feel as though, again this is all
- 1:55:09Speaker 5: I have no information on this whatsoever. I promise I
- 1:55:13Speaker 5: do feel that Mike Rabel is gonna win Coach.
- 1:55:15Speaker 4: That is the one I'm the most confident about.
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: He has one Coach of the Year at all the
- 1:55:19Speaker 5: other you know, PFW at Sporting News, like all these
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: other people that hand out these awards, It's been Mike
- 1:55:27Speaker 5: Rabel Coach of the Year.
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: It's not there.
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: There's not a ton of overlapping voters, but there is
- 1:55:32Speaker 5: not zero overlapping voters either. You kind of just get
- 1:55:35Speaker 5: the general idea of what a voting body looks at.
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: With these kinds of things, it's typically a turnaround award, right.
- 1:55:41Speaker 5: He had the biggest turnaround I would say that Mike
- 1:55:45Speaker 5: Rabel is probably gonna win Coach of the Year.
- 1:55:48Speaker 3: I don't know about McDaniels. That one is tired Coby
- 1:55:52Speaker 3: slam Dunk, so it should be I don't know if
- 1:55:54Speaker 3: he's gonna win.
- 1:55:55Speaker 4: Who else is nominated there?
- 1:55:56Speaker 3: So this is the problem that I have.
- 1:55:58Speaker 5: And I love Josh McDaniels, and I don't want this
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: to come across as any other thing, but uh, you know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: thinking that he's great, Yeah, it does kind of irk
- 1:56:08Speaker 5: me a tiny weeny bit that Mike Rabel and Josh
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: McDaniels are going to get recognized, but Drake May is
- 1:56:16Speaker 5: not going to get recognized, right, So that's fair. The
- 1:56:18Speaker 5: coaches that were part of the best single turner you know,
- 1:56:22Speaker 5: season turnaround in NFL history, tied, are going to do it.
- 1:56:26Speaker 5: Uh potentially, by the way, real quick, it's Fangio Flores, Vance, Joseph,
- 1:56:30Speaker 5: Clint Kubiak, and Josh. If they gave it to Flora,
- 1:56:34Speaker 5: I should have said it's slam Dunk.
- 1:56:35Speaker 4: If they give it to Flores, I'd be good with that.
- 1:56:37Speaker 4: Those are your offensive and defensive whichever way they go,
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: they go.
- 1:56:40Speaker 3: So, uh that that's just my two cents.
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: It doesn't mean that I would think any less of anybody,
- 1:56:45Speaker 5: but I just feel like.
- 1:56:46Speaker 3: No, it's weird.
- 1:56:47Speaker 4: It's it's the player down playing Drake.
- 1:56:49Speaker 3: The player deserves credit.
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: Well, no, essentially, what the voters are saying as Drake
- 1:56:52Speaker 4: made is a product of the Patriots system, which is
- 1:56:55Speaker 4: credits the vote, which is crazy.
- 1:56:56Speaker 3: But a.
- 1:56:58Speaker 4: He did develop like crazy and you got to give
- 1:57:00Speaker 4: the coach some credit for that.
- 1:57:01Speaker 5: Okay, So comeback Player of the Year, that's going to
- 1:57:06Speaker 5: mcaff Yeah, that's probably not gonna be.
- 1:57:07Speaker 4: I would love for the NFL to add a most
- 1:57:10Speaker 4: Improoved Player like the NBA has, and Drake would win
- 1:57:14Speaker 4: that if they had any I think he won it
- 1:57:16Speaker 4: right with with pfw A because they do do that. Uh,
- 1:57:19Speaker 4: they should have the most proved player.
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: They should also add a Collective Offensive Line award.
- 1:57:24Speaker 3: Yes, they have the Protector of the Year.
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: Right, but give us like the pro joe more awards.
- 1:57:28Speaker 3: I actually think the Protector of the Year award.
- 1:57:30Speaker 4: You might get your wish and it might be Jo
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: Joey Lifetime Achievement Award. First one starting to trend in
- 1:57:35Speaker 4: that high five, Greg.
- 1:57:37Speaker 5: It's either going to be him or Penney Sewel it's
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: gonna be one of the two.
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: I think I don't want that to become a tackle award,
- 1:57:43Speaker 4: so I'd love it if a guard wins it first.
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: I think Ted McMillan is gonna win rookie. I think
- 1:57:47Speaker 5: he is very, very good. Yeah, it's deserving. Trayvon Henderson
- 1:57:53Speaker 5: in a good year, but a good year in like
- 1:57:57Speaker 5: peak games, right, Tampa Giants, Buffalo like.
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: Really driving up the yards per care that. Yeah, he was.
- 1:58:06Speaker 3: He was better for the course of the season.
- 1:58:09Speaker 5: So that'll be tomorrow night at NFL Honors Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:58:12Speaker 5: We'll be back at from one to five Eastern, two
- 1:58:16Speaker 5: to ten to two Pacific.
- 1:58:18Speaker 4: I'm trying to do the converted. I'm not on coast
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: time or West Coast time. I'm getting up like I'm
- 1:58:23Speaker 4: on East coast.
- 1:58:24Speaker 5: Doesn't surprised me. So we left some callers on hold.
- 1:58:26Speaker 5: I apologize, but you guys can hit us up tomorrow.
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: We have eight more hours of programming here on Patriots
- 1:58:33Speaker 5: dot com, so you have plenty of other time to
- 1:58:36Speaker 5: call in.
- 1:58:37Speaker 3: I hope that we got you guys ready for the game.
- 1:58:39Speaker 5: That was our goal on this podcast was to be
- 1:58:41Speaker 5: really Seahawks Patriots heavy, because I know you're gonna get
- 1:58:44Speaker 5: a whole lot of nonsense in a lot of other
- 1:58:46Speaker 5: places this week that has nothing to do with the
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: super Bowl. I want to think our guests, Ben, Benjamin
- 1:58:52Speaker 5: solak Shan si ed.
- 1:58:53Speaker 3: They were great. I knew Ben would would kill that.
- 1:58:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I could have talked to him for
- 1:59:00Speaker 5: another hour, but I didn't want to take up too
- 1:59:02Speaker 5: much of his time.
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: Alex and I will be back next week.
- 1:59:05Speaker 5: We'll be home, back in Foxborough next Wednesday, back to
- 1:59:08Speaker 5: our normal time. Uh well, we'll see. Actually will be
