- 0:00Speaker 1: Back at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue here in downtown Hartford, Adam
- 0:03Speaker 1: Giardino with you, joined by the headman of Yukon Men's
- 0:07Speaker 1: ice hockey, Mike Cavanaugh. We left talking more team oriented stuff.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Would love to dig deeper into some of the individual
- 0:15Speaker 1: performances so far, and we're darnear approaching the midway point
- 0:19Speaker 1: of this season. Is there a and I know you
- 0:22Speaker 1: hate this, I'm gonna ask you anyway, So is there
- 0:24Speaker 1: a freshman right now that it has played in a
- 0:28Speaker 1: way that you maybe has exceeded expectations for a freshman?
- 0:33Speaker 2: I would say all of them, Yeah, Yeah, I would.
- 0:36Speaker 2: I would say that, you know, Carlin de Zandy is
- 0:41Speaker 2: certainly he's put up some numbers of late and Alexander
- 0:45Speaker 2: Blake has been very consistent all the way through. And
- 0:51Speaker 2: both Brendan Dunfee and Anthony Alan Samaki. It's not easy
- 0:56Speaker 2: to come in as a freshman defenseman. It's a lot
- 0:58Speaker 2: harder to come in, I think as a defenseman than
- 1:00Speaker 2: it is a forward. And they've both acclimated themselves very
- 1:04Speaker 2: well because parts of our defense of zone coverage can
- 1:08Speaker 2: be esoteric at times, and they have picked up on
- 1:13Speaker 2: it pretty quickly. The little nuances and you know, done
- 1:19Speaker 2: a nice job with it. And even Cam Hendrickson, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 2: in goal. I think he's been solid in both his starts.
- 1:28Speaker 1: When you talk about that kind of esoteric nature. We're
- 1:31Speaker 1: actually gonna talk to Kai Janvrie a little later and
- 1:34Speaker 1: Kai's paired up with biking. Gustav Sen Nyberg.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Just how was that interview with Kai?
- 1:39Speaker 1: He was awesome. Yeah, him and Ethan Grdoola, both of
- 1:42Speaker 1: them outstanding sophomores.
- 1:47Speaker 2: The one thing you could say about Kai is he
- 1:49Speaker 2: would be a loquacious.
- 1:51Speaker 1: You know, but it's funny. Last year I remember it
- 1:54Speaker 1: not be I think we chatted with him and it
- 1:56Speaker 1: was a little more more of a freshman. It just
- 1:58Speaker 1: felt more like, Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 2: The only reason I know that word is because the
- 2:02Speaker 2: second grade teacher told me the same thing.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Guy, without ruining the surprise, we did ask him about
- 2:10Speaker 1: growing just outside of Detroit Thanksgiving football. We'll find out
- 2:15Speaker 1: if he ever went to one of those Detroit Lions
- 2:17Speaker 1: games growing up. Okay, on Thanksgiving Day, you know, for
- 2:21Speaker 1: a Brendan Dunfy, for an Anthony Alayin Samaki in practice,
- 2:28Speaker 1: even though they're do you pair up? Do you mix up?
- 2:31Speaker 1: The defensive pairings just to keep guys fluid and getting
- 2:34Speaker 1: used to things or in practice, do you like them
- 2:37Speaker 1: really getting that cohesion with the guy they're going to
- 2:39Speaker 1: be skating with on a game day.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you'd like the cohesion. It's same thing
- 2:43Speaker 2: with your forward lines. You know, when guys can read
- 2:47Speaker 2: off each other and they have a really good feel
- 2:49Speaker 2: for where the puck is going to go. I think
- 2:51Speaker 2: the same thing is true for defensemen. However, you know
- 2:56Speaker 2: when you have we only have eight defensemen, and when
- 2:58Speaker 2: one's hurt like Trey has been hurt, or they have
- 3:01Speaker 2: to learn to play with all you know each other,
- 3:03Speaker 2: and throughout a game it happens too. There's times where
- 3:08Speaker 2: you mix up your lines to try to maybe get
- 3:10Speaker 2: some energy within the team if you feel like you're flat.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Sometimes you mix up your defensive pairings too. So I
- 3:17Speaker 2: think the great players can play with anybody, but certainly
- 3:21Speaker 2: when you do have a pair that plays together and
- 3:23Speaker 2: can read off each other, I think it's a beneficial
- 3:26Speaker 2: to your team.
- 3:29Speaker 1: So again, loquacious now esoteric. So when you say that,
- 3:33Speaker 1: what do you think is the hardest piece of it
- 3:37Speaker 1: to pick up without giving away you know, trade secrets here.
- 3:39Speaker 1: But what do you think the hardest part is for
- 3:41Speaker 1: a freshman coming into this program to pick that up
- 3:44Speaker 1: as a blue liner.
- 3:47Speaker 2: It's just a little bit different than probably what they've
- 3:51Speaker 2: played up until this point. So it's no different than
- 3:55Speaker 2: a high school football player going in to play defense.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know, Bill Belichick's scheme at North Carolina is going
- 4:03Speaker 2: to be different than what his high school football coach
- 4:05Speaker 2: had ye you know, Nick Saban's scheme is going to
- 4:09Speaker 2: be different than what the guy played. So it's something
- 4:11Speaker 2: that you just have to get used to. And a
- 4:14Speaker 2: lot of times guys might play for a team for
- 4:16Speaker 2: two or three years before they come to us and
- 4:18Speaker 2: they're very comfortable in the system they're at and they
- 4:21Speaker 2: come to us and we're playing something different. So but
- 4:24Speaker 2: hockey players can adjust the and the good ones always do.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Kim, We're doing by head coach Mike Kavanaugh here and
- 4:31Speaker 1: the coaches show Bear Smokehouse barbecuing downtown Hartford. When we
- 4:36Speaker 1: talk later with Ethan Gardula, we ask about his ability
- 4:40Speaker 1: to play along what has been a pretty consistent line
- 4:43Speaker 1: for him. Mike Murtagg continues to take advantage of increased
- 4:48Speaker 1: reps here in his second year. So is there anything
- 4:51Speaker 1: new to report over the last couple of games for Mike,
- 4:54Speaker 1: because it seems the production hasn't slowed down.
- 4:57Speaker 2: No, he's just continuing to play. You know, I've probably
- 4:59Speaker 2: talked about him the most out of anybody this year
- 5:02Speaker 2: and even on this show, and he just continues to
- 5:06Speaker 2: get better. And it's not really surprising to me because
- 5:11Speaker 2: you know, I watched him a lot last year and
- 5:13Speaker 2: I've said this multiple times that we had a really
- 5:16Speaker 2: good team and he was right there. He still played
- 5:20Speaker 2: in a lot of games last year and I had,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, a lot of confidence in him that he
- 5:24Speaker 2: was going to have a great year this year. And
- 5:27Speaker 2: he's probably one of our best forwards at getting to
- 5:30Speaker 2: the front of the net. When you watch him play,
- 5:31Speaker 2: he gets to the front of the net at least
- 5:34Speaker 2: two or three times a game.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Cam Hendrickson is a guy you mentioned. He's the second goaldie.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Tyler Muslik has been the one that has gotten the
- 5:43Speaker 1: bulk of the reps, but Cam with a game against
- 5:46Speaker 1: Ohio State more recently got one against New Hampshire. What
- 5:51Speaker 1: do you like about what he's been able to do
- 5:55Speaker 1: because you know he's given up a couple of goals
- 5:57Speaker 1: in each of the games that he's been in. But again,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you said that you you still like what he's brought.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I think he competes really hard. I love his I
- 6:05Speaker 2: love that aspect about him. I think he's a you know,
- 6:08Speaker 2: catlike quickness. He can get from post to post as
- 6:11Speaker 2: well as anybody, and he's just still you know, I
- 6:15Speaker 2: think the hardest part for him is he doesn't necessarily
- 6:19Speaker 2: have Tyler Muslik size, so he's got to figure out
- 6:22Speaker 2: a way to be able to fight through screens and
- 6:26Speaker 2: you know, find pucks on point shots that where there's
- 6:31Speaker 2: a lot of traffic in front of the net.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He wasn't net giving up to those goals against you
- 6:37Speaker 1: and h in that third period as a freshman, I've
- 6:39Speaker 1: got to imagine that's hard. What have you seen from
- 6:41Speaker 1: him coming out of that experience. I'm sure one that
- 6:43Speaker 1: he would have the old team would have rather not been.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a very confident kid, so I don't think
- 6:48Speaker 2: that was an issue. I think that he uh, you know,
- 6:53Speaker 2: but I have a lot of faith in him, and
- 6:56Speaker 2: you know, if he had to play tomorrow, I feel
- 6:59Speaker 2: very confident with him.
- 7:00Speaker 1: That coming up this coming weekend, is a pair of
- 7:03Speaker 1: games against Merrimack, and then it's about a well almost
- 7:06Speaker 1: a month off where you get to regroup, and we'll
- 7:09Speaker 1: talk plenty about that as we roll on here again.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Later on in the show, we've got Ethan Gardula and
- 7:13Speaker 1: kai Janverria joining us for conversations more with head coach
- 7:17Speaker 1: Mike Kapana when we return to Bear Smokehouse Barbecue in
- 7:20Speaker 1: downtown Hartford. This is Yukon men's ice hockey from Learfield
