Latest / Bleacher Report / LeSean McCoy's Take on Jalen Hurts' Medical Situation, Eagles' Future
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Shady, some news that kind of shook the
- 0:02Speaker 1: NFL world. Jalen Hurts is done for the year. This
- 0:07Speaker 1: is a pretty unfortunate story just overall in general, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: I want to dive into it with you, but for
- 0:11Speaker 1: people that haven't seen it, kind of what happened here.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts out for the year with a blood clot
- 0:16Speaker 1: that started in his leg and moved up into his lungs. Now,
- 0:21Speaker 1: the reason why this story is gaining so much traction
- 0:23Speaker 1: is because of the travel that was involved in this.
- 0:25Speaker 1: So for the timeline for everyone, The Eagles played in
- 0:27Speaker 1: London the other week. They arrived in London. The blood
- 0:30Speaker 1: clot was discovered late Saturday night in London. The game
- 0:34Speaker 1: was the next day on Sunday. Hurts returned to the
- 0:37Speaker 1: team hotel room around 2.45 local time on Sunday, slept
- 0:41Speaker 1: in until about 10 a.m., took the bus to the stadium,
- 0:43Speaker 1: then took a nap at the stadium. He played a
- 0:45Speaker 1: full game against the Jags with that blood clot. Then
- 0:48Speaker 1: they flew back from London to Philadelphia. And one thing
- 0:53Speaker 1: about blood clots, you are not supposed to be flying
- 0:55Speaker 1: or traveling or anything when it comes to this stuff. Shady,
- 1:00Speaker 1: he is done for the year. And to me, this
- 1:02Speaker 1: seems like a situation that was mishandled. But I want
- 1:04Speaker 1: to know your thoughts on this situation between the Eagles
- 1:07Speaker 1: and Hurts.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It's your team. It's your guy. This sucks more than anything.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:11Speaker 2: But give me your thoughts on this situation.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Yeah, so I got a lot of friends over there, teammates, coaches,
- 1:15Speaker 3: et cetera, GMs, everybody. It was my guys, right? And
- 1:18Speaker 3: I did some of my own homework because there's so
- 1:20Speaker 3: many different stories, you know, with the belief.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:22Speaker 3: The truth is, as a player, and I know that
- 1:24Speaker 3: from being a player, where you might get banged up
- 1:26Speaker 3: in the game, right, in the second quarter.
- 1:29Speaker 4: You play a whole fourth quarter, and you kind of
- 1:31Speaker 4: forget about it.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And then when you're home chilling, you're like, dang, I'm
- 1:33Speaker 3: a little sore. You're always going to be sore after games.
- 1:35Speaker 3: They say it's like a mini car accident every time
- 1:37Speaker 3: you get hit. And what I heard is that he
- 1:41Speaker 3: got banged up in the Rams game, right, and was like, man,
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm a little sore here. And they were treating him
- 1:46Speaker 3: on it, something like that. They said he got cleated.
- 1:48Speaker 3: That's like somebody might have stepped on him or something
- 1:50Speaker 3: like that.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:52Speaker 3: A trainer only knows if a player is hurt unless
- 1:54Speaker 3: the player tells him. So I think once he told
- 1:57Speaker 3: him that he treated him, he said, you know what,
- 1:58Speaker 3: it's a little bit worse than we thought.
- 2:00Speaker 4: After treating him a couple days, they get there.
- 2:02Speaker 3: To London, and now they start digging more into what
- 2:05Speaker 3: the injury is.
- 2:05Speaker 4: They don't think they found it was a blood clot.
- 2:08Speaker 3: I think they did their due diligence on what it was,
- 2:11Speaker 3: you know, and they treated him as such. Another thing
- 2:13Speaker 3: that's not true, they said that they kept him up
- 2:16Speaker 3: for 36 hours.
- 2:16Speaker 4: That is not true. I did my homework on it.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I talked to my people over there. That's not true.
- 2:22Speaker 4: He did get some sleep, right?
- 2:23Speaker 3: But I don't think he slept too much because with
- 2:24Speaker 3: the blood clots, they don't want you sleeping too much
- 2:26Speaker 3: on it.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I did think that the team did their best for him, right?
- 2:31Speaker 3: It's just a weird situation because if I'm a player
- 2:35Speaker 3: and I think Jalen Hurts is wired the same way
- 2:37Speaker 3: where he wants to play, right? And they say, hey, man,
- 2:39Speaker 3: you know, the injury half, right? It's not terrible. You know,
- 2:43Speaker 3: you can play with it and And once you heard that, oh,
- 2:45Speaker 3: let's go.
- 2:46Speaker 4: I'm ready to roll. And I think that's what happened.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You know, I truly believe that knowing Jeffrey Lurie, the owner,
- 2:51Speaker 3: Nick Sirianni, Howie Roseman, they're going to do the best
- 2:54Speaker 3: for their franchise quarterback.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You mentioned Sirianni, and he's kind of taken some heat
- 2:58Speaker 1: for how this has been handled and communicated to the
- 3:01Speaker 1: media and to fans. Do you just think that he
- 3:03Speaker 1: was kind of put in an impossible situation when it
- 3:05Speaker 1: comes to this?
- 3:06Speaker 3: I do believe that because as a head coach, right,
- 3:08Speaker 3: first of all, he's on both sides, was going with
- 3:11Speaker 3: the defense, going with the offense.
- 3:12Speaker 4: And he has the best– when it comes to the
- 3:16Speaker 4: medical field, the doctors.
- 3:17Speaker 2: He has to trust those people.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why they get paid big bucks.
- 3:19Speaker 4: They get paid big money. Oh, I bet. And think
- 3:22Speaker 4: about it.
- 3:22Speaker 3: NFL has all the best medicine. A guy can be injured,
- 3:24Speaker 3: supposed to be injured for two months. He's back in
- 3:27Speaker 3: two weeks with the NFL, right?
- 3:29Speaker 4: Right. And I think he asked the doctors, hey, is
- 3:31Speaker 4: Jalen good? Can he go? And they told him yes,
- 3:33Speaker 4: and then that's a roll.
- 3:34Speaker 3: He doesn't know all the particulars and details of every injury.
- 3:38Speaker 4: It don't work like that, you know?
- 3:40Speaker 1: Have you been around a situation or a player that
- 3:43Speaker 1: maybe was also... seriously hurt or injured like this that
- 3:46Speaker 1: just wanted to play more than anything? Was there a
- 3:49Speaker 1: moment like that in your career?
- 3:50Speaker 3: I mean, every true player, every true dog, every player's
- 3:54Speaker 3: not like that. Player gets injured, oh, I'm done for
- 3:55Speaker 3: the year. I think Jalen Hurts and other players like myself,
- 3:58Speaker 3: we play to win. We play for the city. We
- 4:00Speaker 3: play for the team. And there's guys where sometimes you
- 4:03Speaker 3: have to hold the player back. You get a man
- 4:05Speaker 3: to not going out there. This is just unfortunate how
- 4:08Speaker 3: this one happened.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It's incredibly unfortunate. I think He's a Super Bowl champion.
- 4:14Speaker 1: He's an icon in Philadelphia. He's an icon in the NFL.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He played in two Super Bowls. Is there any, moving
- 4:21Speaker 1: on to kind of a little bit about what the
- 4:22Speaker 1: Eagles do from here, because they don't have their quarterback
- 4:25Speaker 1: for the rest of the year.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Are you trying to salvage the season, or are you just,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you know what, this is the hand that we were
- 4:31Speaker 1: dealt this year. Jalen has to be healthy. When he
- 4:34Speaker 1: is healthy, we will focus on that. But for now,
- 4:37Speaker 1: we are, you know, this is just what it is. Well.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Most teams, you know, if you don't have your franchise quarterback,
- 4:42Speaker 3: you really don't win. And on top of that, we
- 4:44Speaker 3: got a lot of other guys hurt as well. This
- 4:46Speaker 3: is not our year, obviously. Every team has this. The
- 4:48Speaker 3: Chiefs had one last year.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. The funny thing, they had one last year.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Nobody even talked about it because they knew.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And then look what happened this year.
- 4:54Speaker 4: We're the same thing.
- 4:55Speaker 3: If you look at this, the duration of Nick Cernani
- 4:58Speaker 3: as our head coach, all he does is win.
- 4:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:00Speaker 3: So this is our down year. We'll still fight for
- 5:02Speaker 3: the division. Hopefully we get some of our guys back healthy.
- 5:05Speaker 3: And if not, it might not be a good year.
- 5:07Speaker 3: But I will say he's turned around. bad teams too,
- 5:11Speaker 3: before he got them. People think, oh, he has a
- 5:12Speaker 3: great roster. Doug Peterson, I think, was like four and
- 5:15Speaker 3: 12 or something like that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: The year, yeah.
- 5:16Speaker 4: When he took over.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:17Speaker 4: That's one thing.
- 5:18Speaker 3: And the second thing is, I truly believe that we
- 5:22Speaker 3: can find out, like, who's the guys for the future.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So maybe like, right, like the backup quarterback.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah. It's a Tanner, right? Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Offensive line is banged up right now. Who can step
- 5:30Speaker 2: up to build up? The defense is obviously still terrific.
- 5:34Speaker 2: You take a pick high with Makai Lemon with wide receiver.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You obviously still have Smitty.
- 5:38Speaker 4: I agree with you.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I think this is like.
- 5:40Speaker 4: And we got draft picks this year, too.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You got draft picks. And you probably have a higher
- 5:43Speaker 2: draft pick than you.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Were expecting to win this year. And we got Howie Roseman.
- 5:46Speaker 2: And you got Howie Roseman, who is the best GM
- 5:49Speaker 2: in the NFL.
- 5:49Speaker 3: We might have a down year. But other teams, when
- 5:51Speaker 3: they have down years, there's no playoff fight.
- 5:53Speaker 4: There's nothing. For us, our down year will probably be
- 5:55Speaker 4: in the playoffs. Yeah. Just won't win. Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Well, hopefully a speedy recovery for Jalen Hurts. It sucks
- 6:01Speaker 1: not having him. But, yeah, it's going to be a
- 6:04Speaker 1: weird year for Eagles fans now, for sure.
- 6:05Speaker 4: I mean, when you win so much, that's what happens.
- 6:08Speaker 4: That's what happens.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That's what happens.
