- 1:07Speaker 5: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:08Speaker 6: I am Brian.
- 1:08Speaker 7: I'm Lucy. And we are coming to you live.
- 1:12Speaker 8: Via digital recording from Harry Dean Stanton Fest.
- 1:36Speaker 9: So you've been here in the midst of it for
- 1:39Speaker 9: days now, Lucy.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Has it only been days?
- 1:42Speaker 10: Months.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Months, years.
- 1:44Speaker 9: A year since last time.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yes, we are on day three now.
- 1:48Speaker 9: How has it been?
- 1:49Speaker 6: It has been, like, beyond anything I possibly could have hoped,
- 1:54Speaker 6: I guess, is the short answer. I'm exhausted, totally sleep-deprived.
- 1:58Speaker 6: I've learned a few lessons, one of which is, well,
- 2:02Speaker 6: I can't say that you don't want to do a
- 2:04Speaker 6: bar event that lasts until 3 in the morning because, honestly, like,
- 2:07Speaker 6: I think that was one of the most fun things
- 2:08Speaker 6: that we did.
- 2:09Speaker 9: I was kind of sad that I didn't make it there.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I was very sad that you didn't make it.
- 2:13Speaker 9: Nobody else was coming. I was trying to get, like,
- 2:15Speaker 9: a ride share there, but slackers. Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you need better friends.
- 2:20Speaker 9: Yeah, tell me about it. You've met them. They're all
- 2:23Speaker 9: on the show.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yeah, wait, where is everybody? I need better friends.
- 2:26Speaker 9: That's what I'm saying.
- 2:27Speaker 8: What the heck, people?
- 2:27Speaker 9: They're slack asses.
- 2:30Speaker 6: Yeah, so Friday night, wait, should you want to kind
- 2:33Speaker 6: of know what we've been doing?
- 2:34Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Is that what you're getting at?
- 2:35Speaker 9: That sounds like a good place to be.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:37Speaker 6: Friday night, we showed Pretty in Pink, and we showed
- 2:40Speaker 6: it in Triangle Park in downtown Lexington, Kentucky. And I
- 2:44Speaker 6: don't believe they'd ever showed films there before. Downtown Lexington
- 2:47Speaker 6: Corporation just started this new series where every other Friday
- 2:51Speaker 6: they're going to show a film in the park under
- 2:53Speaker 6: the stars.
- 2:54Speaker 9: It is glorious.
- 2:55Speaker 6: And so we basically asked them if we could buddy
- 2:58Speaker 6: up and have this be the first day of our
- 3:00Speaker 6: festival and we could show Pretty in Pink.
- 3:02Speaker 2: And they're like, well, we were thinking about showing that anyway.
- 3:04Speaker 6: So it just worked out great. They did all the work.
- 3:07Speaker 2: They're amazing. And we just kind of got to hang
- 3:10Speaker 2: out and have fun.
- 3:11Speaker 9: That looked like an awesome screen, by the way.
- 3:13Speaker 5: It was an awesome screen.
- 3:14Speaker 9: I totally want one of those.
- 3:15Speaker 2: No, the guy that has that business is, maybe you
- 3:17Speaker 2: need to get into that business.
- 3:19Speaker 9: Maybe he needs to hook me up.
- 3:21Speaker 2: He's something else, and the sound was great. I mean,
- 3:24Speaker 2: it was.
- 3:24Speaker 9: I mean, I was kind of wanting to do that
- 3:26Speaker 9: with our festivities that will never take place because, again,
- 3:30Speaker 9: everybody's a slack ass and there's no money. But aside
- 3:33Speaker 9: from those problems, I've been working on our own festival
- 3:36Speaker 9: for years now. So, yeah, we need to bring him
- 3:38Speaker 9: in on that.
- 3:39Speaker 2: All right, let's make it happen.
- 3:41Speaker 9: But it also looked like, again, I'm like the rest
- 3:43Speaker 9: of the world just hooked up through Facebook at this point.
- 3:46Speaker 9: Based on the photos you posted, it looked like a
- 3:48Speaker 9: huge turnout, actually.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd heard numbers from 500 to 700.
- 3:52Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 3:53Speaker 9: I know.
- 3:54Speaker 2: No kidding, right?
- 3:56Speaker 6: So, sadly, they didn't all buy t-shirts, but they were
- 3:58Speaker 6: all there.
- 3:59Speaker 9: What were they thinking?
- 4:02Speaker 6: Yeah, it was a great turnout. I don't know if
- 4:05Speaker 6: you caught any of this, but... They decided the Downtown
- 4:08Speaker 6: Lexington Corporation had the stroke of genius. There may or
- 4:11Speaker 6: may not have been drinking involved. I'm not going to
- 4:13Speaker 6: get into that. I'm not actually supposed to get into that.
- 4:15Speaker 6: But anyway, it came up that maybe they should dye
- 4:19Speaker 6: the fountains pink in honor of Pretty in Pink. And
- 4:23Speaker 6: then they worked with Susan Komen, and they made that
- 4:25Speaker 6: a sponsor. So there was a lot of, what's that word?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Synergy?
- 4:29Speaker 9: Was there synergy?
- 4:30Speaker 2: Is that what was going on? Something like that.
- 4:33Speaker 9: I don't know. It could go the other way. There's
- 4:34Speaker 9: a lot of backstabbing. It's politics.
- 4:38Speaker 2: No, no, it was perfect. I mean, it was a
- 4:39Speaker 2: great thing.
- 4:39Speaker 9: Everybody won.
- 4:42Speaker 6: But anyway, so they put the dye in, and I
- 4:43Speaker 6: guess there was a volume issue. So they put it
- 4:46Speaker 6: in Tuesday night. So Wednesday morning, people go out to
- 4:50Speaker 6: Triangle Park. And keep in mind, there's fountains all the
- 4:52Speaker 6: way around the park. It surrounds the park. So it's
- 4:56Speaker 6: very dramatic when you walk to the park, and it
- 4:58Speaker 6: is blood red. It is like the city is.
- 5:02Speaker 9: Bleeding.
- 5:03Speaker 6: It is like the gates of hell. And everybody was
- 5:06Speaker 6: freaking out. And they were like, oh, my God, everybody's
- 5:08Speaker 6: getting fired. Nobody's going to have a job tomorrow. I
- 5:11Speaker 6: think ultimately it wound up working in everybody's benefit because
- 5:14Speaker 6: it got actually national news.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It was in, like, USA Today.
- 5:19Speaker 9: Lexington sits on top of a Hellmouth. This just in.
- 5:23Speaker 6: It was the best screw-up of all time. And I
- 5:27Speaker 6: guess there were actually rumors at the beginning. There was
- 5:29Speaker 6: a lot of conjecture and theories like, is this Louisville?
- 5:32Speaker 6: Did Louisville fans come in? Because it's right next to
- 5:35Speaker 6: Rep Arena. Are we about to be engaged in a
- 5:37Speaker 6: prank war?
- 5:38Speaker 9: Except the games are all over. Yes, but the rivalry
- 5:42Speaker 9: is not.
- 5:44Speaker 6: Yeah, but anyway, there's a lot of theories. And ultimately,
- 5:47Speaker 6: it did finally turn a really lovely shade of appropriate
- 5:50Speaker 6: pink for Friday night.
- 5:51Speaker 2: So everyone won.
- 5:53Speaker 9: That explained why I drove past and there were kids
- 5:55Speaker 9: splashing around and Actually, I was seeing it from a
- 5:59Speaker 9: weird angle, so it looked purple. So maybe it's just
- 6:01Speaker 9: diluted itself down to purple now.
- 6:03Speaker 2: The other thing being it is dye. These children are
- 6:06Speaker 2: all going home with pink clothes.
- 6:07Speaker 9: Yeah, they were up to their waist in it. So, yeah,
- 6:10Speaker 9: have fun, kids. And parents have to clean that.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I guess there could still be backlash. But anyway,
- 6:17Speaker 2: so that was Friday night. There's always backlash. That was
- 6:19Speaker 2: Friday night. That was fantastic. And then.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Saturday we showed Straight Time here at the library. The
- 6:24Speaker 6: library in downtown Lexington has a great new theater. It's
- 6:27Speaker 6: been fully renovated. You're about to experience it. The sound
- 6:31Speaker 6: is incredible. The picture is incredible. All the screenings are free.
- 6:35Speaker 6: It's just kind of maybe the greatest thing that's happened
- 6:38Speaker 6: to me ever.
- 6:41Speaker 9: I don't have any of that.
- 6:44Speaker 6: So anyway, we showed Straight Time yesterday, and that was
- 6:46Speaker 6: a lot of fun. I hadn't seen it on the
- 6:48Speaker 6: big screen ever. That's one we should talk about sometime.
- 6:52Speaker 6: That's a movie that I love, love, love, except for
- 6:55Speaker 6: one element, which I hate, hate, hate. And I really
- 6:57Speaker 6: kind of want to do my own, like, not director's cut.
- 7:00Speaker 6: I just want to edit the girl out of it entirely.
- 7:02Speaker 9: This sounds like a Fred review.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Oh, Fred.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Where are you, Fred?
- 7:09Speaker 6: And then last night we showed Repo Man at the
- 7:11Speaker 6: Green Lantern, which is why I'm so tired. And that was...
- 7:16Speaker 6: Maybe the most fun I've ever had. My friend's band
- 7:19Speaker 6: was kind enough. Like I threw out this idea one night,
- 7:21Speaker 6: you guys want to cover the soundtrack beginning to end?
- 7:24Speaker 2: And they're like, yeah. And they did it.
- 7:27Speaker 6: Like three months they practiced and learned it and they
- 7:29Speaker 6: brought in guest vocalists and they just rocked the heck.
- 7:31Speaker 9: Out of it.
- 7:32Speaker 6: It was like my 13-year-old girl dream came true last night.
- 7:37Speaker 9: Yeah, I've always thought that is kind of a cool idea, and, like,
- 7:41Speaker 9: nobody ever does that.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 9: Like, there's several times when I've thought it would be
- 7:44Speaker 9: kind of cool, because you'll get, like, an epic soundtrack,
- 7:47Speaker 9: and it's like, you could just kind of go with
- 7:49Speaker 9: that and, you know, play the whole thing, and nobody
- 7:52Speaker 9: ever does. So, yeah, I thought it was kind of
- 7:54Speaker 9: cool when you put that together.
- 7:56Speaker 6: Well, a friend of mine, when I had the idea,
- 7:58Speaker 6: I told somebody, and they were like, yeah, good luck. Like, fine,
- 8:01Speaker 6: that'd be great, but nobody's ever going to commit to
- 8:04Speaker 6: learn the songs.
- 8:04Speaker 9: They're going to bail.
- 8:05Speaker 2: They're going to flake.
- 8:06Speaker 9: It's a good idea when you're not the musicians involved.
- 8:09Speaker 2: But Palisades, I mean, they are amazing.
- 8:12Speaker 6: Like, they were so committed, and they're such musicians, and
- 8:15Speaker 6: they loved the material anyway. It was part of their childhoods,
- 8:18Speaker 6: most of them. And so it just worked out beautifully.
- 8:21Speaker 6: So huge props to them. And then we had a
- 8:23Speaker 6: couple more great punk rock bands. No Excuse and All-American Werewolves.
- 8:28Speaker 2: And, yeah, that was the night. It's good stuff all.
- 8:30Speaker 4: The way around.
- 8:32Speaker 9: And then no sleep.
- 8:34Speaker 2: And then no sleep. But that's okay.
- 8:37Speaker 9: Who needs sleep?
- 8:39Speaker 12: Oh, wow.
- 8:42Speaker 9: I guess that at least sets the scene for us
- 8:45Speaker 9: loitering around here this week. The only other thing, just
- 8:49Speaker 9: to sort of pretend like we have our usual framework...
- 8:52Speaker 9: I would throw out at least something I'd seen. I
- 8:54Speaker 9: didn't know if you've seen anything non-related since last we spoke,
- 8:58Speaker 9: so you can think about that, I guess. Or I
- 9:01Speaker 9: was kind of curious to see if you'd seen this one,
- 9:03Speaker 9: which I just watched yesterday, Source Code.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Yes, I have seen Source Code. Oh, but can we
- 9:09Speaker 6: talk about this without crazy spoilers?
- 9:11Speaker 7: Um.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 9:13Speaker 9: I mean, I wasn't going to go massively into it,
- 9:15Speaker 9: but just sort of give the general, again, if we
- 9:18Speaker 9: need to add that to the list, I guess.
- 9:20Speaker 6: All right, well, you go, and I will think in
- 9:23Speaker 6: my head about how not to say what I'm going
- 9:24Speaker 6: to say.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah.
- 9:28Speaker 9: It was pretty interesting. I had fun with it, I guess.
- 9:31Speaker 9: You know, Jake Gyllenhaal does a good job, which he
- 9:35Speaker 9: usually does. I mean, he's, you know, turned in stellar
- 9:39Speaker 9: performances all the way back to Bubble Boy, so, you know, he's...
- 9:42Speaker 9: He's a fine actor, and I think, you know, this
- 9:46Speaker 9: may strain from geek activities into maybe a little more nerdy.
- 9:50Speaker 9: I think I like time loop movies, which it's funny
- 9:53Speaker 9: that that's become its own sub-genre now. But, yeah, I
- 9:57Speaker 9: don't know. I like those, and I like seeing... what
- 10:00Speaker 9: they do with them and where they go with it
- 10:02Speaker 9: so I think from that angle it was kind of
- 10:05Speaker 9: fun and like different than most of the others for
- 10:08Speaker 9: a couple of different reasons you get into a weird
- 10:11Speaker 9: science involved that I'm just kind of like okay I
- 10:14Speaker 9: mean I guess the science is weird in all of
- 10:16Speaker 9: those for it to even exist but Yeah, that one
- 10:19Speaker 9: gets into a whole different territory, and then you can
- 10:23Speaker 9: do different things, or in theory, I suppose, you can
- 10:26Speaker 9: do different things because of that as the story goes on. So, yeah,
- 10:30Speaker 9: I think that was all kind of interesting, and I
- 10:33Speaker 9: don't know. What were your thoughts? I guess non-spoilery for
- 10:36Speaker 9: the moment.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Non-spoilery for the moment.
- 10:38Speaker 11: Okay.
- 10:40Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Okay, I'm not going to spoil this thing. For me,
- 10:46Speaker 6: I felt like there were three different endings. And if
- 10:49Speaker 6: the movie had ended on the first ending, it would
- 10:51Speaker 6: have been my favorite movie of that year. Was that
- 10:54Speaker 6: last year? It would have been my favorite movie of
- 10:56Speaker 6: last year. Then there's another ending, and then there's an
- 11:00Speaker 6: even less satisfying ending after that, which just felt like
- 11:05Speaker 6: an audience ending. And I felt like it completely betrayed
- 11:11Speaker 6: the narrative logic of the film.
- 11:13Speaker 9: I think it's, like, the second one that annoys me. Like,
- 11:16Speaker 9: the last one, they almost at least set it up, and, like,
- 11:20Speaker 9: it makes sense within the nerdy time science of it,
- 11:24Speaker 9: but then, yeah, I mean, it is sort of a cop-out,
- 11:27Speaker 9: but at the same time, it at least sort of
- 11:29Speaker 9: makes sense. It's that second one, I'm just like, I
- 11:30Speaker 9: don't really care about this nonsense.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Well, if they'd stuck with the first one, I would
- 11:35Speaker 2: have been stoked.
- 11:36Speaker 9: The first one's pretty good.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Moon, did you see Moon, Duncan Jones's directorial debut?
- 11:40Speaker 13: Yes.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I assume that was his debut.
- 11:42Speaker 9: I believe it was, and it's pretty damn impressive.
- 11:45Speaker 8: It's perfect.
- 11:45Speaker 9: Even if it wasn't his debut, it's a pretty impressive movie.
- 11:49Speaker 6: I worshipped that movie, and it was one of those
- 11:50Speaker 6: movies where just watching it, I was like, I can't
- 11:53Speaker 6: believe I'm actually watching something this good right now, this
- 11:56Speaker 6: original and this interesting, and this is like a person
- 11:58Speaker 6: with a voice and a vision.
- 12:00Speaker 9: And the studio didn't totally screw it up.
- 12:03Speaker 6: Yeah. It's nice to have your dad be David Bowie sometimes.
- 12:06Speaker 6: You get to be weird and have that be accepted.
- 12:08Speaker 9: I guess so. Yeah.
- 12:10Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 2: But for this one, I was disappointed.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Again, if they kept the first ending that I think
- 12:17Speaker 6: would maybe not satisfy most people, but I felt worked,
- 12:21Speaker 6: then I would have liked it. So I'm just pretending
- 12:24Speaker 6: that that's how it ended.
- 12:27Speaker 9: Again, without even going too far into it, it enters
- 12:31Speaker 9: into this weird sort of hang time, too, where it's
- 12:33Speaker 9: like you kind of get the big satisfactory moment of
- 12:37Speaker 9: the plot that's been going on, And then you get
- 12:40Speaker 9: like a 10, 15 minute period of, okay, what are
- 12:43Speaker 9: we going to do now? Like pick something. I mean,
- 12:46Speaker 9: it just goes on for way long. Like you could
- 12:48Speaker 9: have wrapped that up in like two or three minutes. Instead,
- 12:51Speaker 9: it's a good 10 or more. I'm just like. when
- 12:56Speaker 9: does the rest of the movie start or roll credits
- 12:58Speaker 9: one or the.
- 12:59Speaker 6: Other and honestly I wanted it to be good so
- 13:01Speaker 6: badly like I was already so invested and so loving
- 13:03Speaker 6: it at that two hour mark or whatever it was
- 13:06Speaker 6: that I was trying to come up with theories to
- 13:08Speaker 6: make the other endings okay like is this meta cinematic
- 13:12Speaker 6: is it about how don't worry about narrative logic because
- 13:15Speaker 6: it's all just filmed them I didn't even.
- 13:18Speaker 9: I guess you can put those on all of the
- 13:21Speaker 9: endings involved again I mean.
- 13:24Speaker 2: But Jake Gyllenhaal, who knew I was going to like
- 13:26Speaker 2: that dude?
- 13:28Speaker 9: Had you had problems with him before?
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I just, I don't know. They're not rational.
- 13:34Speaker 6: They're just more emotionally based.
- 13:38Speaker 9: Okay, I don't think I've had those. I haven't totally
- 13:42Speaker 9: been that invested in him one way or the other,
- 13:44Speaker 9: but he's turned in a few decent performances.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I won't get on my Donnie Darko rant.
- 13:50Speaker 9: You love it?
- 13:51Speaker 6: I'll save it for another time. Oh, yeah, it's just
- 13:54Speaker 6: the two of us in a conference room right now.
- 13:55Speaker 6: I don't want things to get ugly.
- 13:58Speaker 9: Original recipe or extra director's cut crispy?
- 14:01Speaker 2: I haven't actually. I didn't bother with this.
- 14:03Speaker 9: See, I haven't either, mostly because I don't like what
- 14:06Speaker 9: he did.
- 14:06Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 14:07Speaker 9: It gets ridiculous. What it sounds like is we need
- 14:10Speaker 9: an entire Darko episode.
- 14:13Speaker 2: We might, actually.
- 14:14Speaker 9: A Gloves Off Darko episode.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Oh, I kind of like that idea.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 9: I mean, I've already invested, again, we'd be going backwards,
- 14:22Speaker 9: but I've already invested way more of my life into S.
- 14:24Speaker 9: Darko than anybody should. Yeah, I spent way too much
- 14:29Speaker 9: time figuring out what they wanted to say was going
- 14:32Speaker 9: on in S. Darko for what is not a good movie,
- 14:35Speaker 9: but yet I invested way too much time into trying
- 14:38Speaker 9: to figure out Again, science involved, the fictional science involved,
- 14:43Speaker 9: and what they were trying to do and where they
- 14:45Speaker 9: were going.
- 14:45Speaker 5: Oh, Lord.
- 14:47Speaker 9: And it's a mess on top of that. So, yeah,
- 14:50Speaker 9: we could go retroactively and go with the first one
- 14:53Speaker 9: somewhere down the line. So we can save that.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Okay, I look forward to that. So that the fountains
- 14:58Speaker 2: won't have to run red again.
- 15:01Speaker 9: Just with all the random passersby. We'd be fine. So,
- 15:06Speaker 9: have you seen anything non-Harry Dean Stanton Fest related?
- 15:10Speaker 6: I'm not sure I've done anything non-Harry Dean Stanton Fest
- 15:13Speaker 6: related or thought anything non-Harry Dean Stanton Fest related.
- 15:18Speaker 2: Yeah, this has been pretty consuming.
- 15:22Speaker 9: I would assume so. It's quite an undertaking.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Actually, that's not true.
- 15:26Speaker 9: Take that back.
- 15:27Speaker 6: When I was in Los Angeles last weekend, again, preparing
- 15:30Speaker 6: for Harry Dean Stanton Fest, I did want to take
- 15:33Speaker 6: that time to see every movie that I could possibly see.
- 15:35Speaker 2: That I didn't think that I would be able to
- 15:37Speaker 2: see here.
- 15:38Speaker 6: So I saw Bernie, the new Richard Linklater film, which
- 15:42Speaker 6: I loved. For the first half hour, I was like, oh,
- 15:45Speaker 6: this is terrible, because it just felt like this really awkward,
- 15:48Speaker 6: bad satire, and then you kind of realize that, no,
- 15:51Speaker 6: it's really got a lot of heart, and it's a
- 15:53Speaker 6: really interesting story, and they're not, it just, it feels,
- 15:57Speaker 6: it's sort of that small town-y thing, sort of is
- 16:00Speaker 6: very grating at first, and then you realize that it's
- 16:03Speaker 6: affectionate and not.
- 16:05Speaker 2: demeaning.
- 16:06Speaker 9: I just knew it by title, and I knew there
- 16:08Speaker 9: was a new one coming out, but yeah, I haven't
- 16:10Speaker 9: even heard the premise, really, so.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Do what you like to tell you.
- 16:13Speaker 9: If you want to. I guess that is important. Non-spoilery,
- 16:16Speaker 9: but feel free.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Well, I don't actually know how to.
- 16:20Speaker 9: It hasn't opened everywhere. Not all of us get to
- 16:23Speaker 9: jet off to L.A.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I don't know what's... I didn't know anything going into it.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I think that.
- 16:30Speaker 9: If it's better not knowing, you can just say, go
- 16:33Speaker 9: seek it out, I suppose.
- 16:33Speaker 6: Yeah, go seek it out, because I don't know if
- 16:35Speaker 6: what I'm about to say is a spoiler or not,
- 16:37Speaker 6: but it's Jack Black being, again, at first it was like, oh,
- 16:41Speaker 6: here's Jack Black being Jack Black, but it's not. His
- 16:43Speaker 6: performance is actually one of the best things that I've
- 16:46Speaker 6: seen in a really long time.
- 16:48Speaker 9: He's got potential to be more than he usually is.
- 16:52Speaker 9: He just rarely makes use of it.
- 16:54Speaker 6: Yeah, and he sings a lot in this one. I
- 16:56Speaker 6: was like, oh, God, it's Jack Black singing again. So really,
- 16:58Speaker 6: like the first half hour... It just takes a little
- 17:01Speaker 6: while to ease into it. But once you're in, it's
- 17:03Speaker 6: all good stuff.
- 17:04Speaker 9: He was just trying to do cross promotion with the
- 17:05Speaker 9: new album. Which I believe just came out. So probably
- 17:09Speaker 9: not by accident.
- 17:12Speaker 6: And then, oh, I saw Dark Shadows, too. And that
- 17:16Speaker 6: movie I had the exact opposite relationship with. The first
- 17:18Speaker 6: half hour I was like, oh, my God, this is
- 17:20Speaker 6: not going to be terrible. I'm kind of loving this.
- 17:22Speaker 6: And then I realized that there was no story. And
- 17:25Speaker 6: it was all, like, boring and the same joke over
- 17:28Speaker 6: and over again. And just so self-indulgent. It kind of
- 17:31Speaker 6: broke my heart.
- 17:32Speaker 9: We might get to that. I don't know. We had
- 17:34Speaker 9: somebody who wanted to talk about that in a future episode.
- 17:37Speaker 9: So we'll see, I guess. I don't know. I have
- 17:40Speaker 9: yet to make it there because I didn't know if
- 17:42Speaker 9: we were going to or not. So maybe we'll come
- 17:45Speaker 9: back to that as well. You never can tell on
- 17:47Speaker 9: the show. Anything else we need to go into here
- 17:54Speaker 9: before we get knee-deep into today's Harry Dean festivities?
- 17:58Speaker 2: I don't think so. I've got to go set up shirts.
- 18:02Speaker 9: Which I have to get mine. If you have any extra,
- 18:05Speaker 9: you can plug those, I suppose.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Oh, well, yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 9: Because they are awesome. I wouldn't do that if I didn't, like, again,
- 18:10Speaker 9: I'm getting mine. It's freaking awesome.
- 18:12Speaker 6: Well, it's basically how, well, theoretically, it's how we're financing
- 18:19Speaker 6: the festival this year.
- 18:20Speaker 2: We have not yet broken, like, even on the shirts.
- 18:24Speaker 6: So we may actually be taking a loss on the
- 18:26Speaker 6: shirts in addition to everything else. But I guess we
- 18:29Speaker 6: will be selling them for a while. Right now they're
- 18:30Speaker 6: available at Morris Books here in Lexington. And at some point,
- 18:34Speaker 6: I guess soon, like tomorrow when I can think.
- 18:37Speaker 9: About things again. As soon as you wake up in
- 18:38Speaker 9: a couple of days.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Then I think we're going to put them online. Maybe
- 18:43Speaker 2: on Etsy.
- 18:44Speaker 6: Our artist, Stacey Early, like half of the proceeds benefit
- 18:47Speaker 6: the Film League. Well, more specifically, the Harry Dean Stanton Festival.
- 18:50Speaker 6: We'll all go back into the festival. And then the
- 18:52Speaker 6: other half goes to our artist, Stacey Early, who's phenomenal.
- 18:55Speaker 8: Very cool.
- 18:57Speaker 9: Yeah, I certainly understand that. Because it was funny how
- 19:01Speaker 9: somebody on Facebook, it was like a week or so ago,
- 19:04Speaker 9: said something about the t-shirts and mugs that we do.
- 19:07Speaker 9: And he's like, yeah, you know, that's really cool that
- 19:10Speaker 9: you guys do that to help raise money for the show.
- 19:13Speaker 9: I was like, dude, I don't make a damn thing
- 19:16Speaker 9: on them. Like, I made those because I want to
- 19:19Speaker 9: make those. Because I think there needs to be shirts
- 19:21Speaker 9: and mugs. Now, am I getting anything?
- 19:23Speaker 5: No.
- 19:24Speaker 9: Even for as much as they go for, I would
- 19:26Speaker 9: have to be, like, charging ten times as much to
- 19:29Speaker 9: make a dime off of it. So, yeah. If you
- 19:31Speaker 9: guys want one, that's fine, but don't think I'm making
- 19:34Speaker 9: anything off of it because I'm not. I'm breaking even
- 19:36Speaker 9: and you guys get a cool product.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Which is good enough.
- 19:40Speaker 9: But, yeah, so same goes for you. Just, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 9: support all of us by having cool shirts and stuff.
- 19:48Speaker 9: so exactly so i'll plug it again later but you
- 19:52Speaker 9: want to go to harrydeanstantonfest.com.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Yes harrydeanstantonfest.com or harrydeanstantonfest.org we have all our bases covered
- 20:01Speaker 6: because i messed up on the poster and put the
- 20:03Speaker 6: wrong address and it was like crap now i have
- 20:05Speaker 6: to buy the other address That's just how we run
- 20:08Speaker 6: things around here.
- 20:09Speaker 9: I can't say anything. I own so many internet addresses.
- 20:15Speaker 9: And it's mostly just because I'm like, well, I don't
- 20:17Speaker 9: want anybody else to have it. I'm a greedy bastard
- 20:19Speaker 9: and I want to stake my claim all over the internet.
- 20:22Speaker 9: So anything that sort of, kind of, I'm making use of, yeah,
- 20:25Speaker 9: it's mine.
- 20:26Speaker 11: So, mine.
- 20:28Speaker 9: So indulge your internet greed.
- 20:31Speaker 8: All right. Yeah, yeah. It's fun.
- 20:33Speaker 2: So yeah, either one of those. All right. Or Lexington
- 20:36Speaker 2: Film League. which I think is just that,. org.
- 20:42Speaker 9: LexingtonFilmLeague.org. Yep.
- 20:44Speaker 5: All right.
- 20:45Speaker 9: Let's see. So we are going to come back in
- 20:48Speaker 9: a second here with some probably interviews. We're going to
- 20:52Speaker 9: go pester people now and find out what we can
- 20:54Speaker 9: sit up.
- 20:55Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:55Speaker 2: We're going to hopefully get Mr. Donnie Fritz, who's my
- 20:58Speaker 2: new personal hero.
- 20:59Speaker 9: And bestest friend.
- 21:00Speaker 6: He's the best. I've just worshipped this man. He's got
- 21:04Speaker 6: a story about everybody. It's incredible.
- 21:05Speaker 2: We'll see.
- 21:06Speaker 9: Yeah, this should be interesting. So we will take a
- 21:09Speaker 9: break and be back with the rest of the show.
- 21:15Speaker 10: It's intermission time.
- 21:29Speaker 3: So how about taking a break? Get out and stretch
- 21:32Speaker 3: a little and relax before the show begins again. And
- 21:36Speaker 3: why not make it refreshment time, too? We have lots
- 21:39Speaker 3: of tasty, delicious treats waiting for you at the refreshment center.
- 21:43Speaker 3: There's hot popcorn, so golden good and fresh out of
- 21:46Speaker 3: the popper. And all kinds of refreshing ice-cold soft drinks.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Sizzling hot dogs just bursting with juicy goodness. Ice cream
- 21:55Speaker 3: so smooth and delicious, you'll hanker for more. Plus, all
- 21:59Speaker 3: the most popular candy bars and many other favorite treats.
- 22:03Speaker 3: So why not visit the refreshment center now? Our courteous
- 22:06Speaker 3: attendants are ready and waiting to serve you with a
- 22:09Speaker 3: wide and wonderful variety of good things to eat and drink.
- 22:13Speaker 3: So step right up and make yourself at home.
- 22:19Speaker 6: William H.
- 22:20Speaker 12: Bonney.
- 22:21Speaker 11: He killed 21 men. I don't want to kill.
- 22:23Speaker 8: You, Bill.
- 22:24Speaker 5: No, I sure hope you don't, Billy.
- 22:26Speaker 11: And he was just a kid. Billy the Kid. Patrick F.
- 22:38Speaker 12: Garrett.
- 22:39Speaker 11: He was the most dangerous outlaw in the territory. So
- 22:46Speaker 11: they made him sheriff.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Pat Garrett had just one friend. Billy the Kid.
- 22:51Speaker 11: And just one job.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Kill him.
- 23:00Speaker 11: Now Sam Peckinpah, the director who unleashed the Wild Bunch,
- 23:05Speaker 11: takes a hard new look at two old friends, Pat
- 23:08Speaker 11: Garrett and Billy the Kid. They were legends in their
- 23:11Speaker 11: own time. Times have changed.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Times, maybe. Not me.
- 23:19Speaker 11: Get to it.
- 23:21Speaker 4: He'll track you down, Billy.
- 23:23Speaker 7: And gets it.
- 23:23Speaker 8: You know, this ain't no time of year to go
- 23:26Speaker 8: looking for somebody.
- 23:27Speaker 11: I don't know where he went.
- 23:28Speaker 7: Where?
- 23:29Speaker 3: Where? I know where the kid's at. I'll tell you
- 23:33Speaker 3: where he's at.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Old Pat ain't gonna like this.
- 23:36Speaker 11: James Coburn.
- 23:37Speaker 14: Bill!
- 23:38Speaker 11: Chris Christopherson.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Come on in, Pat!
- 23:41Speaker 11: Jason Robards. Slim Pickens. Catty Harado. Jack Elam.
- 23:47Speaker 7: That'd be me, sure.
- 23:49Speaker 11: Rita Coolidge.
- 23:51Speaker 8: Chill Wills.
- 23:52Speaker 11: Yeah. And introducing in his first dramatic motion picture performance... Plums.
- 23:57Speaker 11: recording star Bob Dylan... They.
- 23:59Speaker 12: Say that Pat Garrett's got your number.
- 24:04Speaker 15: Or sleep with one eye open when you wonder.
- 24:12Speaker 13: If every little sound just.
- 24:15Speaker 16: Might be thunder.
- 24:18Speaker 15: Thunder from the power of his gun.
- 24:23Speaker 11: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Legends in their own time.
- 24:28Speaker 11: But time... was running.
- 24:30Speaker 13: Out all right.
- 24:48Speaker 16: So we're here with donnie fritz um i guess However
- 24:52Speaker 16: you want to go about it, if you want to
- 24:54Speaker 16: focus mostly on Harry Dean, since we're at the Harry
- 24:57Speaker 16: Dean Fest, or if you want to go into your
- 25:00Speaker 16: stuff as well. But I guess, how did you first
- 25:03Speaker 16: meet Harry Dean?
- 25:04Speaker 8: Well, I met Harry Dean in 1970. I just started
- 25:09Speaker 8: with Chris Christopherson on the road, and we were playing.
- 25:13Speaker 8: We had to do a bunch of shows out in
- 25:15Speaker 8: Los Angeles at the Troubadour Club. And Harry was there
- 25:19Speaker 8: every night at the bar. And we just got to
- 25:24Speaker 8: be good friends, me and Chris and Harry and Billy Swan.
- 25:29Speaker 8: We got to know each other real well. And through
- 25:32Speaker 8: that meeting with Harry, he was up for a role.
- 25:38Speaker 8: He got a role in a movie. Well, he suggested
- 25:41Speaker 8: to the producers for them to look at Chris for
- 25:45Speaker 8: the lead. The movie called Cisco Pike, which.
- 25:51Speaker 8: Chris went ahead and got the part, thanks to Harry Dean, really.
- 25:55Speaker 8: Harry got it.
- 25:56Speaker 16: Had that been before Chris was acting?
- 25:59Speaker 8: First movie. He had been to Peru with Dennis Hopper.
- 26:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 8: And it's Dennis' follow-up to Easy Rider. You know, he
- 26:08Speaker 8: was just in it kind of singing a few songs
- 26:10Speaker 8: or something. And the movie never really got released either.
- 26:13Speaker 8: So really, by rights, it was the first movie he did.
- 26:17Speaker 10: And....
- 26:19Speaker 8: Had a big party and he carried the movie and
- 26:22Speaker 8: co-starred with Gene Hackman. So it was a pretty big
- 26:26Speaker 8: step for him. And thanks to Harry, uh, that's how
- 26:29Speaker 8: he got the part. And, uh, so he just built
- 26:33Speaker 8: from then on, you know, the next movie that we
- 26:37Speaker 8: were all in together was Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. And, uh, so,
- 26:41Speaker 8: and Harry was a close friend from then on. Every
- 26:44Speaker 8: time I was in Los Angeles, we would get together and, uh,
- 26:49Speaker 8: I got to do another movie with him later on,
- 26:51Speaker 8: thanks to Warren Oates, another Kentucky guy. Chris and I
- 26:57Speaker 8: did another Peckinpah movie, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia,
- 27:02Speaker 8: which Warren was the star of. And Warren got me
- 27:06Speaker 8: in a movie that Harry was in, too, the cockfighter. So,
- 27:10Speaker 8: you know, it just kept building. And every time I
- 27:13Speaker 8: was in Los Angeles, I'd try to see Harry whenever
- 27:16Speaker 8: I was out there.
- 27:17Speaker 16: What was, I guess, the shooting with Sam Peckinpah like?
- 27:21Speaker 8: It was extremely intense. You know, I always said that
- 27:27Speaker 8: Sam was one of the most complicated guys I ever
- 27:30Speaker 8: met in my life because one second he could be
- 27:33Speaker 8: the nicest guy most gentle person. And then that next,
- 27:38Speaker 8: he could be the most cruel person I've ever known
- 27:42Speaker 8: in my life. He just had that old school... Some
- 27:46Speaker 8: of those other directors from the old days were like that.
- 27:51Speaker 8: Bottom line, of course, they made great movies or they
- 27:54Speaker 8: made money from the studios. But anyway, he was a
- 27:58Speaker 8: brilliant director. And he was great to me. I got
- 28:02Speaker 8: to say, he was always... he looked after me there,
- 28:07Speaker 8: especially on Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Because he
- 28:11Speaker 8: asked me, no, he told me, he said, I want
- 28:13Speaker 8: you to be in this movie. We were down in
- 28:15Speaker 8: Mexico with him, Chris and I. This was way before
- 28:18Speaker 8: they started shooting. And he just said, out of the
- 28:21Speaker 8: blue one day, he said, I want you to be
- 28:22Speaker 8: in this movie. I said, well, man, that's a great
- 28:27Speaker 8: compliment because I was a huge movie freak and I said, well,
- 28:32Speaker 8: I've never acted before. He said, that doesn't matter. Just
- 28:38Speaker 8: do what I tell you, and you'll be fine. So
- 28:41Speaker 8: it worked out good, and then he used me on
- 28:43Speaker 8: two other movies, which he certainly didn't have to do.
- 28:47Speaker 8: I was always grateful to him for that. And we
- 28:50Speaker 8: became very, very close friends. But in answer to your question,
- 28:56Speaker 8: it was very.
- 28:59Speaker 8: You just never knew what was going to happen. The
- 29:03Speaker 8: movies were so violent. The two, like Pat Garrett and
- 29:07Speaker 8: Bring Me the Head of Alfredo, they were so damn violent.
- 29:11Speaker 8: It kind of carried on to the location sometimes. Sam
- 29:18Speaker 8: was getting a little worse as he went along. His
- 29:22Speaker 8: health and his drinking and whatever. But it was a
- 29:28Speaker 8: very interesting, very learning experience for me, I'll say that.
- 29:32Speaker 8: I learned a lot on those movies.
- 29:34Speaker 16: He's known for being very specific, especially about the action
- 29:38Speaker 16: scenes and the violence.
- 29:39Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 29:40Speaker 16: How was he as far as like making sure everything
- 29:43Speaker 16: took place the way that he wanted.
- 29:45Speaker 8: To oh and he was you know he was uh
- 29:50Speaker 8: you had it had to be exactly the way he
- 29:53Speaker 8: wanted it and uh but he was he was great
- 29:58Speaker 8: with explaining it to me like the first thing i
- 30:00Speaker 8: did on pat garrett i guess somebody never acted before
- 30:06Speaker 8: and he says we we filmed there was a it's
- 30:11Speaker 8: a saloon's name me and bob bob was in the
- 30:14Speaker 8: scene uh jim colburn and uh chill wheels richard bright
- 30:21Speaker 8: and another guy so But he said, we're going to
- 30:24Speaker 8: film up to where Donnie gets knocked out of the chair.
- 30:27Speaker 8: I had no idea that was going to happen. Not
- 30:30Speaker 8: only I was nervous and scared to death about being
- 30:33Speaker 8: in a movie with him directing and all these great actors.
- 30:37Speaker 8: He said, you've got to learn how to do a stunt.
- 30:40Speaker 8: You've got to learn how to fall. He said, the
- 30:42Speaker 8: camera's going to be right in front of you. So anyway,
- 30:46Speaker 8: we worked it out. It took a few times. He
- 30:50Speaker 8: was mostly worried about how Bob hit me and didn't
- 30:55Speaker 8: worry about how I was doing. Anyway, like I said,
- 30:59Speaker 8: it was just a wonderful experience for somebody, a kid
- 31:02Speaker 8: from Alabama who had no way in the world I'd
- 31:09Speaker 8: get to be, especially a big-budget Western with Sam. And
- 31:14Speaker 8: it was just a dream come true.
- 31:17Speaker 16: I guess just like Harry Dean.
- 31:20Speaker 8: Yeah, Harry, I got to say, Harry, just watching the documentary,
- 31:25Speaker 8: you see what kind of guy he was. He's an extremely,
- 31:30Speaker 8: obviously talented, he's a genius in his own way. There's
- 31:36Speaker 8: another one that, like I said, I stayed in touch with.
- 31:40Speaker 8: We'd go out a lot at night. There was a
- 31:42Speaker 8: guy that, he's 86 now. or 85 he'll be 86
- 31:48Speaker 8: he still stays up all night he'll go to bed
- 31:53Speaker 8: about 7 in the morning smokes continually like I said
- 32:00Speaker 8: in the documentary he does everything wrong but hell he's
- 32:04Speaker 8: turned out he's in better shape than most of us
- 32:07Speaker 8: a lot better shape than I've been in so he's
- 32:12Speaker 8: just one of a kind there's nobody else like Harry
- 32:14Speaker 8: Dean Stanton.
- 32:16Speaker 16: Well, you came in from the music scene. I guess,
- 32:20Speaker 16: what's his connection to music? Because he's definitely been involved
- 32:25Speaker 16: in music his whole life.
- 32:26Speaker 5: So how did you two work together?
- 32:28Speaker 8: Yeah, well, I was, of course, that's how I started.
- 32:30Speaker 8: I'm a songwriter first. And I started out in the
- 32:34Speaker 8: muscle cells in that scene when it first started. So
- 32:39Speaker 8: I went through those years and we learned as we
- 32:43Speaker 8: went along and got a hit or two. And I
- 32:48Speaker 8: just kept building after that. Then when I got with
- 32:51Speaker 8: Chris about 10 years later, to see his career grow
- 32:56Speaker 8: was incredible. Then we met, and then Harry was around
- 33:00Speaker 8: all the time. And Harry loves music, as you well know.
- 33:03Speaker 8: And you know what he really does well is the
- 33:07Speaker 8: Spanish music, Mexican. So he's just incredible. He and Chris,
- 33:12Speaker 8: it didn't show. Well, this was on the Peckinpah documentary.
- 33:17Speaker 8: They did a song from the soundtrack of The Wild Hunts.
- 33:24Speaker 8: It was unbelievable. And it was some Spanish songs they
- 33:31Speaker 8: used in the movie. But he is so good, and
- 33:34Speaker 8: he really works hard at doing it right. And I
- 33:41Speaker 8: don't know. He's one of those guys. And he can
- 33:43Speaker 8: do it. He can do it. We've done some shows
- 33:46Speaker 8: with him, you know. Or he'll come whenever we was playing.
- 33:51Speaker 8: When we were playing in Los Angeles, he'd show up
- 33:55Speaker 8: and do a song or two with us. It was
- 33:58Speaker 8: always great to have him there on stage with us.
- 34:03Speaker 9: He still knows how to play.
- 34:05Speaker 16: Has his wits about him.
- 34:06Speaker 8: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Amazing.
- 34:11Speaker 9: I guess you say you ended up in a few
- 34:13Speaker 9: other movies as time went on. Is it something you...
- 34:16Speaker 9: ever wanted to get into seriously?
- 34:18Speaker 8: Well, you know, I wanted to, but I didn't think
- 34:21Speaker 8: that it would ever be possible because I spent my
- 34:23Speaker 8: whole life committed to music, and that's what I did.
- 34:28Speaker 8: You know, I'm a songwriter, and I was very blessed,
- 34:31Speaker 8: very lucky to get a lot of songs cut that
- 34:34Speaker 8: kept me going, and also years with Chris at the
- 34:37Speaker 8: same time. But in the very early days, I did
- 34:40Speaker 8: get a lot of songs recorded, and over the years,
- 34:43Speaker 8: I've been very lucky. I've got But that's really my
- 34:46Speaker 8: main occupation. But I loved movies all my life. My
- 34:50Speaker 8: mother used to take me to movies all the time.
- 34:54Speaker 8: And so I always loved movies. But I was just
- 34:58Speaker 8: thinking how to work with a little kid from Alabama
- 35:03Speaker 8: who had no training or anything like that, knew nothing
- 35:07Speaker 8: about it.
- 35:08Speaker 11: Just.
- 35:10Speaker 8: How could he ever get in a movie? Well, it
- 35:12Speaker 8: just worked out. I was very lucky. It was the
- 35:15Speaker 8: right place at the right time. And like before Peckinpah,
- 35:19Speaker 8: before Pat Garrett, which was really my first part I did,
- 35:26Speaker 8: you know, where I had a part and went from
- 35:28Speaker 8: the first of the movie to the end of the movie.
- 35:34Speaker 8: We did soundtracks for Cisco Pike And we did a
- 35:40Speaker 8: scene for a movie in Blooming Love. That was Chris's
- 35:44Speaker 8: second movie. And so I kind of used to being
- 35:47Speaker 8: around cameras and movies and stuff a little bit, but
- 35:51Speaker 8: I was no way prepared for what was coming with
- 35:53Speaker 8: Sam Peckinpah. But Sam just took a liking to me
- 35:57Speaker 8: when we first met. And like I said, Chris and
- 36:02Speaker 8: I wound up going to Mexico and spending about a
- 36:04Speaker 8: week with him down there. And that's when he said
- 36:06Speaker 8: he wanted me to be in a movie. So, you know,
- 36:08Speaker 8: it was just pure luck, I think, you know. I
- 36:13Speaker 8: just happened to see a guy that he said he
- 36:15Speaker 8: liked the way I looked. He said, if you were
- 36:20Speaker 8: living in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, during this time period,
- 36:26Speaker 8: what would you be doing? I said, you got me there,
- 36:30Speaker 8: I'd probably be in Billy the Kid's gang. Probably, I
- 36:34Speaker 8: wouldn't be no farmer or rancher. He said, that's why
- 36:37Speaker 8: I want you in the movie. You looked the part,
- 36:41Speaker 8: so I said, okay.
- 36:44Speaker 16: Well, just while I've got you here, I don't think
- 36:46Speaker 16: it's Harry Dean related, but I was a huge Convoy fan.
- 36:50Speaker 5: Oh, wow, cool.
- 36:51Speaker 8: Well, you know, to me, it was a lot of
- 36:55Speaker 8: fun doing that movie. There was a lot of conflict.
- 37:00Speaker 8: In all of Sam's movies, there was always a lot
- 37:02Speaker 8: of trouble and everything. But overall, I remember we went
- 37:08Speaker 8: down to Albuquerque about like a May of 77. And
- 37:14Speaker 8: we worked on that movie all through the summer. There's
- 37:18Speaker 8: the interstate between Albuquerque and Santa Fe is where we
- 37:21Speaker 8: filmed all that stuff. So I just had great memories of.
- 37:28Speaker 8: Uh, being there and watching, uh, these, uh, send these
- 37:33Speaker 8: great stuff. I mean, I, I had a lot of
- 37:35Speaker 8: great friends that, that I already known from other, the
- 37:39Speaker 8: other Peckinpah movies that, that were the stunt guys. And
- 37:42Speaker 8: it was great hanging out with them for two or
- 37:44Speaker 8: three months, you know, and, and they were so many
- 37:47Speaker 8: stunts in that movie. And, and I got to know
- 37:50Speaker 8: Bert Young real well, who became a lifelong friend. He's
- 37:54Speaker 8: still my, I talked to him this past year. He's a,
- 37:57Speaker 8: just one of my good good friends that was one
- 38:01Speaker 8: of the good things that came out of that i
- 38:02Speaker 8: got i got to be good friends with burt so
- 38:06Speaker 8: uh overall it was uh it was a good experience
- 38:10Speaker 8: uh we went to a screening of it now they
- 38:14Speaker 8: took sam off or he took himself off of that
- 38:17Speaker 8: movie when they were editing it and um we were
- 38:23Speaker 8: out there, I say, me and Chris and the band,
- 38:26Speaker 8: we were all out there during this time period, and
- 38:29Speaker 8: they had a screening of it downtown, so we all went, and,
- 38:33Speaker 8: because I saw Sam the next day, and he asked
- 38:37Speaker 8: me what I thought, and I said, well, I thought,
- 38:41Speaker 8: you know, you did great for, you made a movie,
- 38:44Speaker 8: a pretty good movie out of a terrible song, you know, and,
- 38:48Speaker 8: And I said, I was on, and this is one, like,
- 38:50Speaker 8: Sam could just scream at you for the, at the least.
- 38:55Speaker 8: So I'm talking to the guy, and I said, well,
- 38:57Speaker 8: the only thing I was really, and I said, the
- 39:00Speaker 8: only thing I was really disappointed was Burt Young. And
- 39:03Speaker 8: he jumped in and he said, what the hell you mean?
- 39:06Speaker 8: Burt's one of our best actors. And he thought I
- 39:08Speaker 8: was saying something bad about his acting. I said, I'm
- 39:11Speaker 8: not talking about his acting. I love his, and I said,
- 39:14Speaker 8: he's a good friend. I said, the fact is, he's
- 39:17Speaker 8: not in the damn movie. They cut most of his
- 39:20Speaker 8: stuff out. I said, that's why I'm disappointed. Nothing to
- 39:23Speaker 8: do with what he did in the movie. He said, well, see,
- 39:27Speaker 8: they did that actually they took me off the movie
- 39:31Speaker 8: I had no part of that it was a great
- 39:35Speaker 8: time it was a great time.
- 39:37Speaker 16: So I guess you're still out there playing.
- 39:39Speaker 8: Yeah still playing shows and still writing and just had
- 39:46Speaker 8: a great A great thing happened with one of my
- 39:50Speaker 8: old songs that I wrote with Troy Seals, a great songwriter.
- 39:53Speaker 8: It's on the new Rolling Stones album. So that just
- 39:58Speaker 8: out of nowhere happened. I mean, I knew that Keith
- 40:01Speaker 8: had cut it. I mean, they cut the song about
- 40:04Speaker 8: 35 years ago when they were cutting Some Girls. And
- 40:09Speaker 8: they reissued Some Girls. They remixed it, remastered it. and
- 40:15Speaker 8: put two songs, like a two-disc thing, and he chose
- 40:19Speaker 8: 10 songs that they cut during that time period, and
- 40:23Speaker 8: one of them was We Had It All, a song
- 40:25Speaker 8: me and Troy wrote, Troy Sills. So that was a
- 40:30Speaker 8: big thrill.
- 40:32Speaker 16: Do residuals work differently now, having done it for years
- 40:36Speaker 16: now and having people record back then? Is it majorly
- 40:40Speaker 16: different now?
- 40:42Speaker 8: Yeah, the music bed is just so different now. It's incredible,
- 40:45Speaker 8: you know. It's just, everything is, you know, the whole
- 40:50Speaker 8: thing about downloading, you know, everything has changed now. So,
- 40:57Speaker 8: and how they, it's all changed, believe me. The record,
- 41:04Speaker 8: there's a record label's never, it doesn't really matter about
- 41:07Speaker 8: the record labels anymore. So, yeah. I don't know. I'll
- 41:12Speaker 8: be honest with you. I'm glad I'm not starting right now.
- 41:16Speaker 8: When I started, it was a fairly new industry. I'm
- 41:20Speaker 8: talking about rock and roll music. Elvis had only been
- 41:23Speaker 8: around about two or three years when we started in
- 41:26Speaker 8: Muscle Shoals. So it's a fairly young industry. That's part of.
- 41:30Speaker 7: The music business.
- 41:32Speaker 8: But I'd hate to be having to start right now, son.
- 41:37Speaker 16: It is very different.
- 41:38Speaker 8: Yeah, it's really different. You think about all the guys
- 41:41Speaker 8: that are just legends. You think, well, could they do
- 41:46Speaker 8: it now? Could Willie be Willie Nelson? If he came
- 41:51Speaker 8: in right now, I would hope he could.
- 41:55Speaker 16: He's still doing it. I mean, he just put out
- 41:56Speaker 16: that new album.
- 41:57Speaker 8: I know, I know he's still doing it, but he's
- 41:59Speaker 8: starting to start off, you know. But think about somebody
- 42:04Speaker 8: like Willie and Chris, the main thing, they had these brilliant,
- 42:08Speaker 8: brilliant songs, and that's a big difference maker with those guys.
- 42:14Speaker 9: Probably.
- 42:15Speaker 16: If you have the talent, it'd be a Willie YouTube
- 42:18Speaker 16: channel somewhere.
- 42:19Speaker 8: Yeah, I hope so, man. I hope so. In fact,
- 42:22Speaker 8: I've talked about it with him. He said, you know, God,
- 42:26Speaker 8: I don't know. Nobody wants to look at me in
- 42:28Speaker 8: a video. I mean, if he's just starting off, nobody's
- 42:32Speaker 8: saw him before.
- 42:33Speaker 11: You know.
- 42:33Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:34Speaker 8: It's hard to say, but hopefully talent would win out,
- 42:39Speaker 8: you know, in that.
- 42:41Speaker 16: So what area are you in now, or are you
- 42:43Speaker 16: still playing around your sound?
- 42:45Speaker 8: I got my own band I use for muscle shows.
- 42:48Speaker 8: They're great musicians, great musicians. And we do show. We
- 42:53Speaker 8: were in Japan about two years ago. We did a
- 42:56Speaker 8: tour over there. And it was like I had my
- 43:01Speaker 8: first CD. It really did well over there. But that
- 43:05Speaker 8: was in 1974, you know. And that was the year.
- 43:11Speaker 8: That was the last year I was in Japan with Chris.
- 43:16Speaker 8: So I kept in touch with this Japanese guy. Anyway,
- 43:20Speaker 8: he was a promoter over there, and we worked out
- 43:22Speaker 8: a little deal where we could bring a band over there,
- 43:25Speaker 8: and we sold out every place they booked. We couldn't
- 43:29Speaker 8: believe it. We really didn't know what to expect, but
- 43:33Speaker 8: we still play whenever we can, and I'm going to
- 43:37Speaker 8: do another album here pretty soon. knock on wood and
- 43:45Speaker 8: so you know keeping it going.
- 43:46Speaker 16: Trying sounds good well yeah we can tell everybody to
- 43:49Speaker 16: keep an eye out for you touring around and.
- 43:51Speaker 8: Look for the new album yeah definitely sounds good.
- 43:55Speaker 16: Alright well thank you for talking to us.
- 43:56Speaker 8: Today well thank you Brian thank you.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Okay, Carol, now you take these notes, and then we're
- 44:34Speaker 1: about ready to begin.
- 44:34Speaker 10: Okay, sure.
- 44:35Speaker 14: Well, what are you two doing here? We don't record
- 44:37Speaker 14: until tomorrow.
- 44:38Speaker 1: We're making a new promo for All Games Considered, since
- 44:41Speaker 1: you were dragging your feet getting one written.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Hey, she's right, though. It's been too long, and a
- 44:46Speaker 2: lot has happened since the last promo.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yeah, like winning the Gold N.E. for Best Gaming Podcast
- 44:50Speaker 1: for 2009.
- 44:51Speaker 14: You mean the one you try to work into the
- 44:52Speaker 14: conversation every other episode?
- 44:54Speaker 9: Hey!
- 44:54Speaker 2: Now, now, there's more than that.
- 44:56Speaker 1: There's the new format.
- 44:57Speaker 14: You mean the main show every two weeks and the
- 44:59Speaker 14: assortment of other features in the meantime?
- 45:01Speaker 1: Right, like games you may never have heard of, the
- 45:03Speaker 1: review in new shows. Don't forget the RPG buffet.
- 45:06Speaker 14: And on the main show, we have more time to
- 45:08Speaker 14: focus on gaming topics.
- 45:09Speaker 1: Like board and card games.
- 45:10Speaker 14: And RPGs. And the people who play them from the
- 45:13Speaker 14: old school to the newest of the new.
- 45:15Speaker 5: But no changeling. Hey!
- 45:18Speaker 14: Find out more at agcpodcast.info. All games considered, because there's
- 45:23Speaker 14: more than one true way to play.
- 45:40Speaker 7: I'm C.
- 45:40Speaker 9: Thomas Howe, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 45:45Speaker 12: Wolverine's There's guns across the river about to pound you.
- 46:08Speaker 9: There's a long man on.
- 46:10Speaker 12: Your trail like to.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Surround you.
- 46:17Speaker 12: Bounty hunters are dancing all around you.
- 46:24Speaker 15: Really they don't like you to be so free.
- 46:30Speaker 8: You know, the times we talked about that, he, of course,
- 46:38Speaker 8: he did.
- 46:38Speaker 5: It better than anybody else.
- 46:40Speaker 8: You know, he did a wild bunch, still obviously a masterpiece.
- 46:45Speaker 8: And that's where a lot of his criticism started from.
- 46:48Speaker 8: But he said, okay, I did the wild bunch and
- 46:51Speaker 8: I got criticized. And the next movie he did was
- 46:55Speaker 8: Battle of the Cable Holes. Nobody came.
- 46:58Speaker 5: So what am I going to do?
- 47:00Speaker 8: The next movie he did was Straw Dogs. He went
- 47:04Speaker 8: back to us. He always said, look, if I'm gonna
- 47:08Speaker 8: do violence, if I'm gonna show violence in the movie,
- 47:13Speaker 8: I don't want it to be some cartoon violence. I
- 47:17Speaker 8: want it to be the real thing where it would
- 47:21Speaker 8: make people, in other words, people don't want any part
- 47:25Speaker 8: of that. If you do the real thing and make
- 47:27Speaker 8: it look real, Nobody was a part of that. But
- 47:32Speaker 8: if you just show somebody, you know, the other way,
- 47:36Speaker 8: it was just real cartoon-like. They don't get it. With Sam,
- 47:41Speaker 8: you got it. You know, there's pain there and hurt
- 47:45Speaker 8: and death. And that's the way you want to be
- 47:49Speaker 8: very realistic about that.
- 47:54Speaker 12: They say that Pat Garrett's got your number.
- 48:00Speaker 15: So sleep with one eye open when you wonder.
- 48:04Speaker 7: What was your name, sir?
- 48:06Speaker 5: Glenn Wilson.
- 48:08Speaker 9: And then you're technically his cousin?
- 48:10Speaker 8: Uh-huh.
- 48:11Speaker 5: Once removed is what they say it is.
- 48:13Speaker 9: Harry Dean's cousin.
- 48:15Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 5: My dad's sister was Zoe Wilson and Harry Dean's grandmother.
- 48:28Speaker 5: was my dad's sister. So it's like a first cousin
- 48:33Speaker 5: once removed is what I've always been told. That's a connection.
- 48:38Speaker 16: And where were you and he born, I guess?
- 48:43Speaker 5: Harry Dean was born on West Irving. I've got a...
- 48:47Speaker 5: I gave a print of the picture of the house
- 48:51Speaker 5: that Harry Dean was born in. When you looked out
- 48:55Speaker 5: the front door... You looked at the West Urban Cemetery,
- 49:00Speaker 5: 180 degrees. That was his view, so I don't know
- 49:03Speaker 5: what kind of an impact that had on him as
- 49:07Speaker 5: he was growing up. It's a grim childhood. But no,
- 49:12Speaker 5: I've got pictures at home. We've got frames of the
- 49:16Speaker 5: house that he was born in.
- 49:17Speaker 8: Nice.
- 49:18Speaker 5: Yeah, a little frame house there. Very cool. Right across
- 49:21Speaker 5: from West Urban Cemetery. I have no memory of actually
- 49:28Speaker 5: being in his company, but when they lived on the
- 49:35Speaker 5: same street that Tom Thurman lives on now, I was around,
- 49:42Speaker 5: his parents lived on that street, and I was around
- 49:46Speaker 5: him for about six years. But when he was like 16,
- 49:52Speaker 5: I was 10 years old. A 16-year-old teenager is not
- 49:57Speaker 5: going to pay any attention to a 10-year-old kid running around. So, no, I've...
- 50:03Speaker 5: thought and thought i have no memory of actually being
- 50:09Speaker 5: in this company but i know i was yeah because
- 50:12Speaker 5: i of course i remember uh his mom and dad
- 50:17Speaker 5: and grandmother uh his his uh maternal grandmother was one
- 50:23Speaker 5: of my daddy's sisters yeah so uh you know I
- 50:27Speaker 5: knew them all, but at the age he was in
- 50:34Speaker 5: and the age I was in, there just wasn't any
- 50:38Speaker 5: mixing in. There could have been times, you know, we'd
- 50:41Speaker 5: talk to each other, but that's been so far back.
- 50:44Speaker 5: I'm 79 years old. But I've always been a fan
- 50:49Speaker 5: of his movies. It's been a great time.
- 50:52Speaker 16: Character actor definitely do you remember like when he went
- 50:56Speaker 16: off to war when he went up to join the navy.
- 51:00Speaker 5: No they they uh i don't i don't remember that
- 51:04Speaker 5: no i i remember tales that that when he decided
- 51:09Speaker 5: to get into movies that he wound up to uh
- 51:15Speaker 5: a greyhound bus station he got on the bus and
- 51:17Speaker 5: went to california i don't know whether that's true or
- 51:20Speaker 5: not yeah but uh No, I wish I could recall
- 51:29Speaker 5: the things that happened, but, you know, when a kid's
- 51:32Speaker 5: 10 years old and not knowing what was going to
- 51:36Speaker 5: happen in Harry Dean's life later on, it just kind of.
- 51:39Speaker 16: Definitely.
- 51:41Speaker 5: He's come a long ways.
- 51:45Speaker 16: Definitely, yeah.
- 51:46Speaker 5: And, yeah, I talked to some... people at the university
- 51:51Speaker 5: of kentucky that when he was there uh in the
- 51:56Speaker 5: kenyal theater yeah and the guy there that was in
- 52:00Speaker 5: charge of that told him get out of here you've
- 52:04Speaker 5: got the potential to become a big-named.
- 52:08Speaker 9: Actor go get a real job.
- 52:11Speaker 5: Yeah so he left in his junior year and uh
- 52:16Speaker 5: I was always told they took him down to the
- 52:18Speaker 5: Greyhound bus station, which is on Eskimate, right around here. Yeah, yeah. Then,
- 52:23Speaker 5: and called the Greyhound bus, headed west. Very cool.
- 52:30Speaker 9: Well, just thanks for talking to us.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Okay.
- 52:32Speaker 9: And just wanted to get your take on it.
- 52:34Speaker 8: Yeah.

- 53:26Speaker 3: You know, you haven't seen enough movies.
- 53:27Speaker 8: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 53:30Speaker 3: And now, on with the show.
- 53:44Speaker 15: Mama take this badge off of me.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I can't use it anymore.
- 54:12Speaker 15: Getting dark, too dark to see.
- 54:15Speaker 5: I feel I'm knocking on heaven's door.
- 54:26Speaker 15: Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door.
- 54:33Speaker 13: Knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door.
- 54:37Speaker 9: All right, so we are back, and Lucy and I
- 54:40Speaker 9: are sitting... In the Kentucky Theater right now.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Yes, back row, empty theater. It's glorious, isn't it? I mean,
- 54:46Speaker 6: have we discussed how ridiculously beautiful this theater is?
- 54:48Speaker 5: I think, yeah.
- 54:49Speaker 9: I'm going to have to take a picture of this.
- 54:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:51Speaker 9: Just to pass it on to everyone. Speaking of which,
- 54:55Speaker 9: while I was wandering around earlier, I walked down and
- 54:58Speaker 9: took a picture of your bloody fountains, and I think
- 55:01Speaker 9: I'm going to pass. So if you're not already on
- 55:03Speaker 9: our Facebook page, people... Get on it, because I'm posting
- 55:06Speaker 9: pictures of the bloody, bloody fountains on the hell mouth
- 55:09Speaker 9: that is Lexington.
- 55:10Speaker 2: So you missed it, though. You missed the real deal.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Those pictures do exist, though. I can pass them along.
- 55:16Speaker 9: That'd be pretty cool. But I just, I liked, even now,
- 55:19Speaker 9: I mean, this is days later.
- 55:22Speaker 8: Right, right.
- 55:23Speaker 9: And there were still children playing in it, dyeing themselves
- 55:25Speaker 9: some sort of horrible color. So, yeah, I thought that
- 55:28Speaker 9: was pretty funny. So, yeah, it's been a hell of
- 55:32Speaker 9: a festival. You're ready to pass out.
- 55:34Speaker 6: I'm going to sleep for several weeks. I will emerge
- 55:39Speaker 6: in time to begin planning next year's festival.
- 55:43Speaker 9: I think before we wrap up, we should pass on
- 55:45Speaker 9: the plan that we have. As we were talking to
- 55:49Speaker 9: Harry Dean's cousin, we realized he also is getting up
- 55:53Speaker 9: in years and doing pretty damn well as well. He's
- 55:57Speaker 9: in good shape as well, so we're not sure what's
- 55:59Speaker 9: up with these guys' DNA.
- 56:01Speaker 2: Yeah, no, for the sake of science, they need to
- 56:04Speaker 2: be studied.
- 56:05Speaker 9: You said they need to be studied. I said we
- 56:07Speaker 9: need to take their DNA, clone them, and make an
- 56:09Speaker 9: army of Harry Dean Stanton super soldiers.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Which might is, yeah, that's actually a better idea.
- 56:15Speaker 9: I'm just picturing, like, the Clone Wars, only when you
- 56:17Speaker 9: take the helmet off, they all look like Harry Dean Stanton.
- 56:19Speaker 2: God, that's like my dream.
- 56:21Speaker 8: Awesome.
- 56:22Speaker 7: Isn't it?
- 56:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 56:22Speaker 9: It's pretty awesome, I think. All right. Well, as far
- 56:27Speaker 9: as upcoming stuff, we're going to be jumping back and forth.
- 56:34Speaker 9: In the next few weeks, we've got a couple of
- 56:36Speaker 9: different special guest co-hosts that are in the works. Not
- 56:40Speaker 9: going to ruin it yet or jinx it because they
- 56:41Speaker 9: haven't really happened. But, yeah, I've got a couple of
- 56:44Speaker 9: different people lined up to sit in and hopefully talk
- 56:49Speaker 9: at great length. about some ridiculous movie geekdom. So stay
- 56:53Speaker 9: tuned for that. And once again, in the very near future,
- 56:55Speaker 9: we're going to be coming to you again from the
- 56:59Speaker 9: Heritage Stanton Fest here to piece together our Paris, Texas episode,
- 57:04Speaker 9: which also features the Hunter interview that we did from
- 57:07Speaker 9: last year's Heritage Stanton Fest.
- 57:09Speaker 6: Which I'm still dying to hear a year plus after
- 57:13Speaker 6: the fact.
- 57:14Speaker 2: I know. It's a lot of buildup now. I mean,
- 57:16Speaker 2: this really kind of needs to be the best interview
- 57:18Speaker 2: of all time.
- 57:18Speaker 9: It was a pretty good interview. I just went back
- 57:21Speaker 9: and re-listened to it. Hunter's a good guy.
- 57:23Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a super smart, super entertaining dude. So I
- 57:26Speaker 6: can only imagine that I will be delighted.
- 57:28Speaker 9: It was a fun interview. So once again, to get
- 57:31Speaker 9: the mentions in there for you guys, the harrydeanstantonfest.com.
- 57:35Speaker 2: Yes, or org. Whichever you prefer. However you're feeling that day.

- 58:12Speaker 6: was going to use.
- 58:13Speaker 2: I have delighted in your presence.
- 58:15Speaker 9: I don't know if anybody's buying that, but all right.
- 58:18Speaker 9: I'll take it. Otherwise, that about does it. We will
- 58:21Speaker 9: return next week. Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks
- 58:24Speaker 9: for listening. That's some real Mexican blues.
- 58:28Speaker 7: Let's see.
- 58:29Speaker 4: How far away I am from the land where I
- 58:31Speaker 4: was born and intense nostalgia invades my mind. I'm sitting
- 58:39Speaker 4: alone and sad like a leaf on the wind. I
- 58:41Speaker 4: want to cry.
- 58:42Speaker 9: I want to die.
- 58:43Speaker 4: I miss my home so much. Oh, land of the sun,
- 58:47Speaker 4: I'm sighing to see you. Now I'm far away and
- 58:51Speaker 4: live without light, without love. I see myself alone and
- 58:55Speaker 4: sad like a leaf on the wind. I want to cry.
- 58:58Speaker 3: I want to die.
- 58:58Speaker 4: I feel so much for my home.
- 59:09Speaker 12: Good luck.
- 1:00:50Speaker 9: I still live without.
- 1:00:53Speaker 13: Light, without love.
- 1:00:58Speaker 17: Seeing me so lonely and sad, like the wind, I
- 1:01:04Speaker 17: would like to.
- 1:01:05Speaker 10: Cry, I would like to die of feelings.
- 1:01:19Speaker 17: Oh land of the sun, I sigh for you Now
- 1:01:24Speaker 17: that far away I live without light, without love Al
- 1:01:46Speaker 17: ver mi tan solo y triste cual hoja al viento.
