- 0:00Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're going to dive right
- 0:06Speaker 1: back into the Jess Daly transcript from his trip to Congress. Question,
- 0:11Speaker 1: did you ever ask Mr. Epstein about the cash withdrawals? Answer,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I know someone, either I did or Mary did, and
- 0:18Speaker 1: he said that they, he, told her or he told
- 0:21Speaker 1: me that they were to, or he told his banker,
- 0:24Speaker 1: that they were to fuel his airplane. Question, did you
- 0:27Speaker 1: ask why he would need cash for airplane fuel? Answer,
- 0:30Speaker 1: I don't think I did. I think the question, I
- 0:33Speaker 1: think the question was discussed, and I think the view
- 0:36Speaker 1: was particularly, if you're flying overseas or whatnot, that oftentimes
- 0:40Speaker 1: you would pay cash for fuel as opposed to another source. Question,
- 0:44Speaker 1: what steps were taken to investigate that defense? Answer, I
- 0:48Speaker 1: don't know. Again, I was not part of the team
- 0:51Speaker 1: that was looking into that. Question, you mentioned, this made
- 0:55Speaker 1: it up to the general counsel, Stephen Cutler. Did you
- 0:58Speaker 1: discuss the matter with Stephen Cutler? Answer, at one point
- 1:02Speaker 1: in time, yes. I think as Epstein's problems built, he
- 1:05Speaker 1: hired some very recognized lawyers, and I recall that I
- 1:08Speaker 1: suggested Steve meet with them. Question, why did you suggest that? Answer,
- 1:12Speaker 1: so the bank would make an informed decision as to
- 1:15Speaker 1: whether to keep Epstein or not as a client. Question,
- 1:19Speaker 1: in October of 2011, Stephen Cutler complained to you and
- 1:22Speaker 1: others that Epstein was not an honorable person in any way,
- 1:26Speaker 1: and he should not be a client. How did you respond? Answer, again,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I let the bank do what the bank felt was proper. Question,
- 1:34Speaker 1: did you say anything at that moment in response to
- 1:36Speaker 1: him though? Answer, I think that's when he had people
- 1:40Speaker 1: like Ken Starr represent him and just suggested that Steve
- 1:43Speaker 1: meet with Ken Starr. But it was Steve Cutler's decision
- 1:46Speaker 1: to close him as a client or not. If Steve
- 1:49Speaker 1: Cutler wanted to do it, he could have done it. Question,
- 1:53Speaker 1: there's reporting that you asked Mr. Cutler to sit down
- 1:56Speaker 1: with Mr. Epstein and hear him out. Is that correct? Answer, yes.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Or hear his lawyers out. I forget what it was.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It was either meet with Epstein. I think I did
- 2:05Speaker 1: meet with Epstein. And I don't know whether Steve met
- 2:08Speaker 1: with him or was with his lawyers. Question, why did
- 2:12Speaker 1: you advocate for Mr. Cutler to take his time to
- 2:14Speaker 1: meet with Mr. Epstein? Answer, Steve was running legal and
- 2:18Speaker 1: compliance in the bank. And these were serious allegations. And
- 2:21Speaker 1: the bank was going to exit Epstein more than it
- 2:24Speaker 1: already had. Seemed like Steve. Seemed like the thing to do.
- 2:27Speaker 1: was have Steve meet with Epstein himself. Question, did you
- 2:31Speaker 1: not feel as though Mr. Epstein, as a registered sex
- 2:34Speaker 1: offender and someone who pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution for minors,
- 2:38Speaker 1: was a great risk to the bank and should be
- 2:40Speaker 1: removed as a client? Answer, well, again, the bank cut
- 2:44Speaker 1: off the principal activities that it had with Epstein. The
- 2:47Speaker 1: question is whether you would choose to close his checking
- 2:50Speaker 1: account or not. Question, did anyone else at the bank
- 2:53Speaker 1: take steps to defend Mr. Epstein? Answer, I don't think
- 2:57Speaker 1: I took steps to defend Epstein, but I think his
- 3:00Speaker 1: banking team defended him. And I think what's telling is
- 3:04Speaker 1: when Epstein moved his accounts ultimately out of Morgan, he
- 3:07Speaker 1: followed his banking team to Deutsche Bank. Question, was Mr.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Cutler going to remove Mr. Epstein as a client before
- 3:13Speaker 1: you asked him to sit down with Mr. Epstein? Answer,
- 3:16Speaker 1: I don't know. Question, reporting indicates that Justin Nelson wrote
- 3:20Speaker 1: a memo trumpeting Epstein's large volume of business with JP Morgan.
- 3:25Speaker 1: and noting that despite his status as a sex offender,
- 3:28Speaker 1: he was still clearly well-respected and trusted by some of
- 3:30Speaker 1: the richest people in the world. Did you ever see
- 3:34Speaker 1: this memo? Answer, I know Justin Nelson. I don't know
- 3:37Speaker 1: if I saw that specific memo. Question, did you ever
- 3:40Speaker 1: speak with Mr. Nelson about Mr. Epstein's status as a client? Answer,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I recommended that Justin Nelson be the banker for Jeffrey
- 3:48Speaker 1: Epstein at one point, but I think that was it. Question,
- 3:51Speaker 1: was Justin Nelson also your banker? Answer, he became the
- 3:55Speaker 1: banker to my wife's family, not me. Question, are you
- 3:58Speaker 1: aware of whether Mr. Epstein asked Mr. Nelson to write
- 4:01Speaker 1: this memo? Answer, no. Question, by Mr. Emmer, we've had
- 4:05Speaker 1: another member join. Can she please announce herself for the record?
- 4:10Speaker 1: Congresswoman Luna. Mr. Emmer, Mr. Luna, we understand you have
- 4:14Speaker 1: some questions. Miss Luna, I do, thank you. Thank you
- 4:18Speaker 1: for being here today. I wanted to see, have you
- 4:20Speaker 1: ever made a settlement payment to Redacted? Staley, no. Question, okay,
- 4:26Speaker 1: at your position at J.P. Morgan, you had referenced U.S.
- 4:29Speaker 1: intelligence agencies. Can you elaborate further on your interactions with
- 4:33Speaker 1: various agencies? And if so, which agencies were those? Staley,
- 4:37Speaker 1: can you say that again? Luna, you had made a
- 4:41Speaker 1: reference to having contact with U.S. intelligence agencies for your
- 4:45Speaker 1: work at J.P. Morgan. Staley, yeah. Luna, can you specify
- 4:49Speaker 1: as to the agencies as well as what the nature
- 4:52Speaker 1: of that work may have been? Staley, I believe it
- 4:55Speaker 1: was the State Department and the CIA. Luna, okay. Can
- 4:58Speaker 1: you elaborate further on what they were having you do? Staley, yeah.
- 5:02Speaker 1: This was after 9-11, and the Bin Laden family had
- 5:06Speaker 1: its international banking accounts with J.P. Morgan, and the State
- 5:09Speaker 1: Department and Morgan and I agreed that I should fly
- 5:11Speaker 1: to Saudi Arabia to meet with the Bin Laden family
- 5:14Speaker 1: and tell them that the State Department and Morgan recognized
- 5:17Speaker 1: that Osama Bin Laden was rogue and had been expelled
- 5:20Speaker 1: by the family. Then the family's business with Morgan would
- 5:23Speaker 1: be preserved. Luna, where does the CIA fit into the conversation? Staley, huh? Luna,
- 5:30Speaker 1: where does the CIA fit into those conversations? Staley, my
- 5:34Speaker 1: recollection is the CIA came to meet me in my office. Luna,
- 5:38Speaker 1: with the State Department? Answer, I'm not sure whether it
- 5:40Speaker 1: was the same time or together. Luna, do you remember
- 5:44Speaker 1: who at the State Department or who at the CIA
- 5:47Speaker 1: came to meet you? Staley, no. Luna, okay, following up
- 5:51Speaker 1: on that, were you aware that Jeffrey Epstein had an alias? Staley,
- 5:56Speaker 1: had a what? Luna, an alias. Staley, no, I was not. Luna, okay.
- 6:02Speaker 1: He had an alias that was listed with a Saudi
- 6:05Speaker 1: Arabian address. Following that interaction that you had with the
- 6:08Speaker 1: Bin Laden family, did Jeffrey Epstein ask to meet with
- 6:10Speaker 1: you again? Staley, with respect to the Bin Laden family? Luna,
- 6:15Speaker 1: or closely thereafter? Staley, I don't know about the timing,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but I don't think he met with me with respect
- 6:21Speaker 1: to the Bin Laden family. Luna, did he ever ask
- 6:24Speaker 1: you about your travels to that area? or interactions with
- 6:27Speaker 1: the family. Staley, he was close to a member, a
- 6:30Speaker 1: member of the royal family in Dubai. Luna, who was? Staley,
- 6:36Speaker 1: he ran Dubai ports. Luna, who was close to a member?
- 6:40Speaker 1: Staley Epstein. Luna, okay. Staley, and I met with the
- 6:45Speaker 1: Sheikh who ran the ports of Dubai. That was the
- 6:48Speaker 1: only really, and then he had connections in Israel, and
- 6:51Speaker 1: I met senior officials in Israel that Epstein knew. Luna,
- 6:55Speaker 1: who did you meet? Staley, I met Ehud Barak, and
- 6:58Speaker 1: I met Prime Minister Netanyahu. Luna, those were my questions. Ms.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Tolan jumps in. Question, and then I just have a
- 7:06Speaker 1: quick follow-up for something we were discussing earlier. You mentioned
- 7:09Speaker 1: that you were not part of the rapid response teams
- 7:11Speaker 1: or any of the teams overseeing Mr. Epstein's accounts. We
- 7:15Speaker 1: were talking about you being informed of his making the
- 7:17Speaker 1: suspicious cash withdrawals. Why were you informed of that? Answer, again,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think it was very suspicious. And generally, the bank
- 7:26Speaker 1: would report cash withdrawals like that to the federal government.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And you know, it's just something that generally the bank
- 7:31Speaker 1: would not allow. Question, but you said you were informed
- 7:35Speaker 1: about it. And then had a discussion with Mr. Epstein.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Is that correct? Answer, as I said, I think I
- 7:41Speaker 1: or Marierdos said the bank raised the issue about cash
- 7:45Speaker 1: and there was a problem. Question, so who would have
- 7:48Speaker 1: been informed or informed you about the withdrawals? Answer, I
- 7:51Speaker 1: don't recall exactly who was informing. Ms. Brignac, question, when
- 7:56Speaker 1: did you begin working at Barclays? Answer, in December of 2015. Question,
- 8:01Speaker 1: what was your position? Answer, CEO. Question, what is Barclays? Answer,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it's a major international bank headquartered in London. Question, did
- 8:11Speaker 1: you ever ask Mr. Epstein to assist you in getting
- 8:13Speaker 1: the position at Barclays? Answer, never. Question, it's been reported
- 8:18Speaker 1: that Mr. Epstein enlisted a London power broker to plant
- 8:21Speaker 1: seeds about you with senior bank officials. Back in 2012.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Did you interview for the position in 2012? Answer, yeah. Question,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and did it go to someone else? Answer, yes. Question,
- 8:34Speaker 1: so the rest of the reporting is correct. Did Mr.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Epstein enlist a London power broker to plant seeds about you? Answer,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I don't know. And I would not have wanted somebody
- 8:42Speaker 1: to lobby on my behalf. Question, you never asked him
- 8:46Speaker 1: to speak with? Gets cut off by Staley, never. Question,
- 8:50Speaker 1: in 2015, did Barclays ask that you change anything about
- 8:54Speaker 1: your relationship with Mr. Epstein? Answer, no. I took the
- 8:57Speaker 1: decision when I became CEO of Barclays that I'd cut
- 9:01Speaker 1: all contact with Jeffrey Epstein. Question, did you in fact
- 9:04Speaker 1: cut all contact with Mr. Epstein in 2015? Answer, I
- 9:09Speaker 1: had no contact post-2015 with Jeffrey Epstein, direct contact. Brignac,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'll now enter as Majority Exhibit 8 into the record.
- 9:18Speaker 1: The document is bait stamped with EFTA 0105-5036. It's an
- 9:24Speaker 1: email exchange between your daughter, redacted, and Mr. Epstein from
- 9:28Speaker 1: February 6, 2017. Ms. Brignac will go off record. Now
- 9:34Speaker 1: they come back. Question, do you recognize these emails, Mr. Staley? Answer, yes. Question,
- 9:40Speaker 1: can you describe what's happening in the thread? Answer, again,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I think it's Jeffrey Epstein, unfortunately, trying to contact me
- 9:46Speaker 1: through my daughter. Question, were you aware that Mr. Epstein
- 9:49Speaker 1: was contacting your daughter in 2017? Answer, my understanding is
- 9:54Speaker 1: it happened twice. I was not aware. I don't believe
- 9:57Speaker 1: there was contact before the exchange. Question, why would Mr.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Epstein reach out to Redacted regarding a former J.P. Morgan employee,
- 10:06Speaker 1: Veronique Weil? Answer, again, many years before he was helpful
- 10:12Speaker 1: in her pursuit of physics, so they knew each other,
- 10:15Speaker 1: and it seems like he approached her with respect to
- 10:18Speaker 1: Veronique Weil. Question, did your daughter come to you and
- 10:22Speaker 1: ask you the question? Answer, that's what this email says. Question,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and did you know it was coming from Mr. Epstein? Answer,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I believe so. Question, so Mr. Staley, can we agree
- 10:32Speaker 1: your communication through your daughter to Mr. Epstein? We're in
- 10:35Speaker 1: violation of the agreement you made with Barclays to cut
- 10:38Speaker 1: off communication with Mr. Epstein after 2015, correct? Answer, there
- 10:43Speaker 1: was not an agreement. What I told Barclays was that
- 10:46Speaker 1: I had not had physical contact with Epstein for a while,
- 10:49Speaker 1: which was true. And I cut off contact directly with
- 10:52Speaker 1: Epstein upon taking the CEO role at Barclays, which is
- 10:56Speaker 1: also true. Question. And then you began communicating to Mr.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Epstein through your daughter redacted. Answer. No, I did not
- 11:03Speaker 1: start communicating with Epstein through my daughter. Question. You testified
- 11:07Speaker 1: you were aware the message from your daughter. You testified
- 11:10Speaker 1: earlier that you were aware that your daughter's message came
- 11:13Speaker 1: from Mr. Epstein. And it reflects in the documents that
- 11:16Speaker 1: you gave Redacted that information. So you did not cut
- 11:20Speaker 1: off contact with Mr. Epstein following 2015, correct? Answer. Your
- 11:25Speaker 1: first thing is that I was trying to contact Epstein
- 11:27Speaker 1: through my daughter. I wasn't trying to contact Epstein through
- 11:30Speaker 1: my daughter. Ms. Luna, I'm back for more questions. Do
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know who Redacted is? Have you heard that name? Staley,
- 11:39Speaker 1: now I have. Luna, okay. So she read the email.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Snow White was fucked twice as soon as she put
- 11:46Speaker 1: on her costume. Would you say that would be a
- 11:48Speaker 1: predatory statement to make about this image? Staley, what's your question? Luna,
- 11:55Speaker 1: would you say that that statement is a predatory statement
- 11:58Speaker 1: to make about this image? Staley, I don't think it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: a predatory statement. Luna, you don't think it's predatory? Staley, no.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I think someone's assaulting a woman is predatory, yes. Luna,
- 12:08Speaker 1: the question was, do you think that that's a predatory
- 12:12Speaker 1: statement to make about the image. Staley, I don't know
- 12:15Speaker 1: who that person is. Luna, I'm not asking if you
- 12:18Speaker 1: know who the person is. I'm asking if you think
- 12:20Speaker 1: that the statement is predatory to make about this image. Staley,
- 12:25Speaker 1: if that's what, if that's the image the person is
- 12:27Speaker 1: referring to, Luna, referring to, yes. Staley, then yes. That
- 12:31Speaker 1: would be a predatory statement. Luna, okay. Going back to
- 12:35Speaker 1: this email correspondence, it appears that Jeffrey Epstein is asking you,
- 12:39Speaker 1: which character would you like next? Do you know what
- 12:42Speaker 1: he's referencing? Answer, I don't. Luna, okay. It says that
- 12:46Speaker 1: you're responding to him, Beauty and the Beast. Can you
- 12:49Speaker 1: refer in Beauty and the Beast? Are you talking about Belle? Staley,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I'm just mentioning Beauty and the Beast. Luna, sir, I
- 12:56Speaker 1: wouldn't laugh at this. Staley, I'm not. Luna, it's very
- 13:00Speaker 1: disturbing to read these emails. So I just, the reason
- 13:03Speaker 1: I'm asking you is because to me, reading this, it
- 13:06Speaker 1: looks like there's trafficking happening. And what I would say is,
- 13:10Speaker 1: this girl, look, she's maybe about 13 or 14 years old.
- 13:14Speaker 1: So if this was written about someone like your child,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I don't think that you would be laughing right now.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And so the point is that we have you here.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Can you give us information and or names for people
- 13:25Speaker 1: that you may know who have harmed these kids? Staley, no,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I don't know anyone. Sullivan, congressperson, I have an objection. Luna,
- 13:33Speaker 1: it's congresswoman. Sullivan, congresswoman, thank you. But to say from
- 13:38Speaker 1: the picture to guess the age... as 13 years old,
- 13:41Speaker 1: strikes me as... Luna jumps in. I've seen some of
- 13:45Speaker 1: the unredacted photos, and these, well, they're children. Sullivan, that's
- 13:49Speaker 1: your view, but I'd like to see them. Luna, well,
- 13:51Speaker 1: you can. I'm sure you'll get the opportunity if this
- 13:54Speaker 1: becomes criminal. Sullivan, thank you. Brignac, we have some pressing follow-ups.
- 14:00Speaker 1: We'll go off the record, and we'll come back on
- 14:01Speaker 1: later to ask those. All right, folks, we're going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: wrap up right here, and in the next episode, dealing
- 14:06Speaker 1: with the topic we're going to pick up where we
- 14:08Speaker 1: left off. All the information that goes with this episode
- 14:12Speaker 1: can be found in the description box.
