- 0:22We will begin with the addition dated June nineteenth to
- 0:25twenty second, twenty twenty six. Our first article is titled
- 0:30AT and T Kentucky Targeting copper theft with ten thousand
- 0:35dollars Reward by Russ Cassidy. AT and T Kentucky is
- 0:40offering a ten thousand dollars reward for tips leading to
- 0:43the arrest and conviction of copper theft suspects in Kentucky,
- 0:47and while AT and T officials say the theft is
- 0:50down in some places, there have been ninety nine thefts
- 0:54so far in twenty twenty six, costing the company roughly
- 0:58five hundred thousand dollars in reaws. However, according to AT
- 1:02and T Kentucky president Carlos E. Sanchez, the financial cost
- 1:08is not the only see reward page five A. Our
- 1:13next article is titled Pike Man pleads guilty to federal
- 1:16child foreign charge. A Pike County man has pled guilty
- 1:20to a federal child pornography charge, according to court documents,
- 1:24on June sixteenth, Charles Michael Hopkins, thirty five, of Indian
- 1:29Creek Road, Virgie, pled guilty to a charge of possession
- 1:32of child pornography, which carries a maximum prison sentence of
- 1:36twenty years, followed by between five years and life of
- 1:40supervised release. According to an affidavit filed in the case
- 1:44by FBI Special Agent Matthew T. Haines, in June twenty
- 1:48twenty five, the Electronic Crimes Branch received a cyber tip
- 1:52line report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
- 1:57The report, according to the affidavit, was that a video
- 2:00had been found by a cloud storage company containing footage
- 2:03of a completely nude prebebescent male minor engaged in a
- 2:06sexual activity with the nude adult male. The phone number
- 2:10connected to the possessor of the video was linked to Hopkins,
- 2:13the affidavit said, and upon investigation, it was found that
- 2:17there were twelve additional NCMEC reports linked to Hopkins. After
- 2:23obtaining a search warrant for the cloud storage account linked

- 2:32next article is titled Southeast Chamber names new president. The
- 2:37Southeast Kentucky Chamber of Commerce announced in a statement on
- 2:40June eighteenth that long time President and CEO Jordan Gibson
- 2:45NBA IOM KC has resigned to accept a new position
- 2:51as a wealth advisor with Community Trust Wealth and Trust Management.
- 2:55Gibson's tenure with the Chamber continues through the end of
- 2:58the month before he begins his new role. The Chambers
- 3:02Board of Directors has selected Tiffany Coleman to succeed Gibson
- 3:06as President and CEO, effective July first. Coleman currently serves
- 3:12as Vice president of Accounting and Special Events and brings
- 3:15extensive financial knowledge and operational experience to the position. The
- 3:20statement said. Coleman will also complete her certification from the

- 3:34management and serves as the industry standard for chamber and
- 3:37association education. Gibson joined the Southeast Kentucky Chamber in twenty
- 3:42seventeen and has led the organization through a period of
- 3:45significant growth and transformation, the Chamber said in the statement.

- 3:55enhanced member services, and grown signature programs and events that's
- 3:59support business and community engagement throughout Eastern Kentucky, the statement said.
- 4:06Throughout his time as CEO, Gibson has been deeply engaged
- 4:10in community service and regional leadership. Beyond the Chamber, he
- 4:14has served on several boards and commissions dedicated to advancing
- 4:17economic growth, preserving local heritage, and enhancing the quality of

- 5:39accompanied by a photo of Tiffany Coleman. Our next article
- 5:43is titled Pike Tourism revenue decreases, local officials remain optimistic
- 5:49by Terry L. May. The Commonwealth of Kentucky once again
- 5:53saw a rise in tourism spending and economic impact, while
- 5:57several counties, including Pike, saw a decline in the twenty
- 6:01twenty five numbers. Despite that, local tourism officials are still optimistic.
- 6:06The Kentucky Department of Tourism's twenty twenty five economic Impact
- 6:10report shows Pike County had an eleven percent decline from
- 6:14the previous year, with total tourist spending of sixty nine
- 6:18point seventy one million dollars. The county was one of
- 6:22five counties that reported a double digit decline. The statistics
- 6:27in the report, however, indicate that despite the reported decline,
- 6:31Pike County is still a tourism leader across the Commonwealth.
- 6:35Tourism spending placed the county second in the Eastern Highlands
- 6:40North Division and within the top twenty counties in Kentucky. Quote.
- 6:45Even with the drop, we are second only to the
- 6:48Ashland Boyd County area in our district, Pikeville City Tourism
- 6:52Executive Director Jill Dotson said, continuing, quote, I'll take that
- 6:57any day. Other counties in the fifteen county district include
- 7:02Rowan County, an area that is part of the Daniel
- 7:04Boone National Forest with Cave Run Lake and a large
- 7:07regional university Moorhead State, along with neighboring Floyd and Johnson Counties.
- 7:14Quote I'm really excited. See Tourism page two A. The
- 7:19article is accompanied by a photo submitted by Pikeville Pike
- 7:23County Tourism captioned tourists from Wisconsin recently went on a
- 7:28motor coach tour of Pike County and visited the McCoy well.
- 7:32They also toured many other areas and attractions available in
- 7:35the region. Our next article is a photo titled two
- 7:39vehicle collisions sends one to the hospital, An Appalachian newspaper's
- 7:43photo by Bruce Justice, captioned first responders set a two
- 7:48vehicle crash on June sixteenth near Belfrey resulted in one
- 7:53person being transported to the hospital. Belfree VFD Chief and
- 7:57Pike County EMS Director Jackson so the crash occurred when
- 8:02the driver of a Toyota Camry attempted to pull out
- 8:05from the seven to eleven marathon when he entered into
- 8:07the path of a gravel truck that was traveling south.
- 8:11There were no other injuries, Jackson said. The photo shows
- 8:14emergency vehicles behind a damaged vehicle and men picking up debris.
- 8:19Our next article is titled Several indicted by Pike Grand Jury.
- 8:24A Pike County grand jury convened on June sixteenth, re
- 8:27turning thirteen true bills, indicting fourteen individuals. Those indicted and
- 8:32their charges are Patria Lynn Adkins, Kentucky eleven sixty two,

- 10:55possession of a controlled substance, second degree possession of a
- 10:59controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia d
- 11:04u I, first degree persistent felony offender, and a traffic violation.
- 11:09Editor's note. An indictment is not an assertion of guilt.
- 11:13It is a finding by a grand jury that there
- 11:15exists enough evidence to formally charge an individual with a crime.
- 11:20All individuals listed are considered innocent until proven guilty. Our
- 11:25next article is a continuation of tourism continued from page one. A.
- 11:30I am really excited with our twenty twenty five numbers,
- 11:33said Pikeville, Pike County tourism marketing director j Shepard, to
- 11:39borrow from the cliche, we had a perfect storm in
- 11:42Pike County. We were coming off twenty twenty four when
- 11:45we set record breaking spending numbers, and then we had
- 11:49a major flood. We were known nationally as a flood
- 11:52disaster area. I was worried we would have no numbers
- 11:55to report quo. We had an entire shopping center that
- 11:59was just droid and many other businesses were closed, he continued,
- 12:03But here's the thing, our spending has still been tremendous.
- 12:07Hopefully we won't get flooded again and get those numbers
- 12:10back to where people can see. This is just directly
- 12:13a reflection of that disaster. One of the biggest sources
- 12:16of tourism spending for Pike County comes from motor coach visitors,
- 12:20Sheppard said. Before the COVID nineteen pandemic in twenty twenty,
- 12:25Pikeville Pike County tourism was among the top nationally in
- 12:29terms of motor coach spending dollars. Quote. COVID almost destroyed
- 12:34that industry, but since that time we have been rebuilding
- 12:37that market, Shepherd said. Both twenty twenty three and twenty
- 12:41twenty four showed high numbers in spending, with twenty twenty
- 12:44five being only about one to two percent less than
- 12:47twenty twenty three. Quote. The twenty twenty six numbers will
- 12:51show whether the drop in spending dollars is a trend
- 12:54or the twenty twenty five decline was because of the flood,
- 12:57He continued, but our twenty twenty six numbers already seem
- 13:00to be strong. Spending in twenty twenty three was seventy
- 13:05point six million dollars and seventy eight point six million
- 13:09dollars in twenty twenty four, State tourism reports show quote.
- 13:14I think overall, our economic impact on our region is
- 13:17incredibly impressive, she said. Certainly, there is a bit of
- 13:20a drop off, but we still had excellent numbers. I
- 13:23think next year we will see a difference in the numbers. Quote.
- 13:26I am thrilled that people are still choosing the eastern
- 13:29Kentucky region, especially Pikeville and Pike County, to come and visit.
- 13:33Dotson continued, we have a major impact not only the
- 13:37Pikeville City tourism, but also the Pikeville Pike County tourism.
- 13:41We are two separate offices, but we certainly have the
- 13:44same goal getting people in our area and showing them
- 13:47a wonderful time. Both Dotson and Shepherd say that tourism
- 13:51remains strong in Pikeville and Pike County because of a
- 13:54myriad of tourism opportunities, cultural, historic, scenic, beauty, venture tourism,
- 14:01and retail shopping that are available in one location. Quote.
- 14:05One of the things that visitors comment the most about
- 14:08is the hospitality that they receive when they come to
- 14:11Pikeville and Pike County. Shepard said. They crave that along
- 14:15with having real, authentic experiences when they go somewhere. We
- 14:20give them that. Our next article is titled Hatfield McCoy
- 14:24Marathon sees both usual Comma unusual in twenty twenty six
- 14:28by Bruce Justice. You could say Charleston, West Virginia native
- 14:33Hector Falcon easily winning his second Hatfield McCoy Marathon would
- 14:39be representative of a routine outcome. For the twenty twenty
- 14:42six race, Falcon not only set a chorus record with
- 14:45a time of two hours thirty three minutes and thirty
- 14:49six seconds and twenty twenty four, shattering the old record
- 14:52of two hours forty one minutes three seconds sent way
- 14:55back in two thousand and six. But he returned this
- 14:58year after sitting out in twenty two twenty five, to
- 15:00finish with a still remarkable time of two hours forty
- 15:04two minutes and twenty five seconds in much hotter and
- 15:07humid weather conditions than runners had to battle and overcome
- 15:11in twenty twenty four. The same could be said of
- 15:13Zoe Brown of Ardada, Colorado, who not only finished first
- 15:18in the women's division with a time of three hours,
- 15:20ten minutes fifty five seconds, but she also managed to
- 15:23break a year's old record time of three hours, thirteen
- 15:26minutes twenty two seconds set in twenty sixteen. And then
- 15:30there was Los Angeles, California marathoner Rachel Rodriguez, who you
- 15:35might say was representative of the unusual aspect of the
- 15:38twenty seventh annual marathon, mistakingly believing this year's race was
- 15:42scheduled for Sunday, June fourteenth instead of Saturday, June thirteenth.
- 15:47Rodriguez had to run her version of the marathon completely
- 15:52alone a day late. Quote, it's a really good story,
- 15:56race director Alexis Batusa said. Quote. She got mixed up
- 16:00on the date, so she talked with Selina and starters,
- 16:04and arrangements were made for her to run the course
- 16:06on Sunday, which she did, and which she managed to
- 16:09do in about four hours. Quote. I just think something
- 16:13like this is very representative of any race in a
- 16:16given year, he continued, But I also think it's the
- 16:20kind of anomaly that makes them really great, Batusa said.
- 16:24In total, nearly seven hundred runners registered for this year's marathon,
- 16:29up more than one hundred from last year, with two
- 16:32hundred and twenty five of those having registered for the
- 16:34full marathon and having traveled here from forty different states.
- 16:38In Washington, d c. Quote, we had one hundred sixty
- 16:42seven to run the BlackBerry half, which was up from
- 16:45last year, and one hundred eighteen to run the River
- 16:48Road half, which was down somewhat, he said, quote, but
- 16:52I think that was because the walking bridge connecting West
- 16:55Virginia and Kentucky at the golf course was a big
- 16:59part of the runner experience running the River Road half,
- 17:03and since that's no longer there because of it being
- 17:05destroyed in the February twenty twenty five flooding, I think
- 17:09a lot of them just chose to run the BlackBerry
- 17:11half instead, Batusa said. The other unusual aspect of this
- 17:17and every marathon preceding it was again the hospitality shown
- 17:21to every participant. Quote at the end of the day,
- 17:24that's what makes this marathon what it is, Batusa said.
- 17:28The hospitality and kindness shown people doing whatever it takes
- 17:32to accommodate everyone and getting you to the finish line.
- 17:36That's what makes it really special. This article is accompanied
- 17:39by two photos by Bruce Justice. The first caption is
- 17:43Zoe Brown of Our Dada, Colorado, finished first in the
- 17:47women's division of the twenty twenty six Hatfield McCoy Marathon
- 17:50with a record time of three hours, ten minutes, fifty
- 17:53five seconds in the women's division. The second caption reads Charleston,
- 17:59West Virginia, NAH native Hector Falcon won the twenty twenty
- 18:02six Hatfield McCoy Marathon. For a second time on June thirteenth,
- 18:06with a time of two hours, forty two minutes twenty
- 18:09five seconds. A third photo submitted by the Tug Valley
- 18:13Roadrunners Club caption reads runners leave the parking lot of
- 18:18the South Williamson Food City on June thirteenth to kick
- 18:22off the twenty twenty six Hatfield McCoy Marathon, which drew
- 18:25runners from across the United States. Our next article is
- 18:28a column titled are Belfry organizers drunk? Backyard Banter with
- 18:33Jeff Vanderbeck. Belfree wants to become a city, and an
- 18:37independent group wants the entire county wet, meaning alcohol sales
- 18:41for all. Naturally, there's a buzz pun intended surrounding the efforts.
- 18:46An independent group wants alcohol sales county wide, and if
- 18:50you look at our recent poll on www dot news,
- 18:53dash expressky dot com, eighty percent of responses want alcohol
- 18:59as well. Frank, I'm amazed it has taken this long
- 19:02for an effort like this to happen. The group is
- 19:04not made up of a bunch of raging alcoholics, just
- 19:08a group of people who want to see progress county wide.
- 19:11Local alcohol sales will generate much needed tax revenue for
- 19:15the county, potentially cut down on drunk driving arrests, and
- 19:19open the entire county for commerce. The group is a
- 19:22big proponent of those measures, while the county clergy is
- 19:26totally against alcohol sales. I guess the water into wine
- 19:29part was ripped out of their bible. What areas have,
- 19:33according to an accident Analysis and Prevention report, the potential
- 19:37to reduce DUIs. The report stated that in dry areas,
- 19:41residents have to drive farther to obtain alcohol or go
- 19:45to an establishment like a restaurant, which increases the time
- 19:48of possible impaired drivers on the roadways. Local sales can
- 19:52eliminate boot leggers, which we all know are still prevalent
- 19:55in the county. Just ask the politicians. Bootleggers for u
- 20:00years have been used by crooked politicians to bribe people
- 20:03for votes, and wet areas have a lower rate of
- 20:06meth labs according to the state's study. So there's that
- 20:10local sales could possibly increase the opportunity for new restaurants, entertainment,
- 20:14and hospitality venues to locate in wet areas. Wet areas
- 20:19could spark entrepreneurs to become successful by starting a business,
- 20:22creating jobs and paying taxes implications To start, the county
- 20:28would need an ABC administrator, which could be paid for
- 20:31by the increased alcohol tax dollars generated. The study reported
- 20:36a potential increase in crime as bars can be a
- 20:38major hub for violence, you know, ego driven idiots with
- 20:42quote beer muscles who want to prove a point and
- 20:45start fighting or worse, discharge a weapon. I spoke to
- 20:49incoming Judge Executive Susie Shearer, and she said that the
- 20:53issue is for the people to decide if and when
- 20:57it gets to the ballot, and whatever the outcome, the
- 21:00people have spoken and that's how it should work if
- 21:03it's administered properly and monitored. I'm for the county being wet.
- 21:08Now on to the plans for the city of Belfry.
- 21:11There is a small group of individuals who apparently are
- 21:13not happy with the county and want to morph into
- 21:16their own city. While it's a novel idea, the implications
- 21:20could severely damage the county and the probability of this
- 21:23happening is slim. In order for Belfrey to become its
- 21:27own city, a petition must be signed by a majority
- 21:30of local voters, and based on the last election, the
- 21:33majority stayed home. I wonder if anyone really cares. Then
- 21:37an official act of Kentucky's General Assembly must be undertaken
- 21:41to charter the legal boundaries. Due to the mass up
- 21:45front costs associated with such an endeavor and the costs
- 21:48of running another small city, the state rarely approves new incorporations.
- 21:53The state prefers places to stay unincorporated or become annexed
- 21:57into an existing city, which will happen, so I don't
- 22:01look for this endeavor to go too far. If the
- 22:04long shot were to happen, the city of Belfrey would
- 22:07transition away from the county and potentially have a self
- 22:11governing municipality with its own taxing authority, local laws, and
- 22:16public services. You read that correctly. Higher taxes will be
- 22:20needed to support the efforts of a few people who
- 22:22are behind this movement new Belfrey City see Vanderbeck, page
- 22:28nine A. Our next article is a column titled not
- 22:33Ready Paddling Upstream with SJ. Ruth. Some things you're just
- 22:38not ready for. You don't realize that until that thing
- 22:41lands at your feet. I've been ready for most of
- 22:44the hits that come with sixty something years. That doesn't
- 22:48mean they didn't hurt, or that I didn't stagger for
- 22:50a while. It just means I could see them coming.
- 22:53I got the chance to flinch, throw up a hand,
- 22:56to prepare for the blow. Divorce, death of parents, a
- 23:00cancer diagnosis. Terrible things to live with, but none were surprises.
- 23:05Sudden loss of a sibling is something else entirely. Loretta
- 23:10and her three sons would all tell you their hometown
- 23:13is Elkhorn City, but Johnny was the only one of
- 23:16us actually from Pike County. He was born at Pikeville
- 23:20Methodist Hospital in nineteen sixty eight. I was ten and
- 23:24Mitch was four. We've moved to Elkhorn from Georgia just
- 23:29a year before. It wasn't long before everyone in town
- 23:32knew Johnny. John and Loretta, for the most part, were
- 23:35free range parents. Johnny roamed like a free range chicken
- 23:39with its head cut off. He might be anywhere at
- 23:42any time, probably running, which was probably safer than hanging
- 23:46with his older brothers, who tended to talk him into
- 23:49the kind of stunts Johnny Knoxville dreamed of. He was
- 23:53both highly suggestible and indestructible. The kid had a permanent
- 23:57knot in the middle of his forehead between his eyes
- 24:00because he always led with his head. He had a
- 24:03big wheel and he knew how to use it. Clyde Mullins,
- 24:07who nicknamed all the neighborhood kids, dubbed him sugar Bear.
- 24:11His buddies called him peanut for size whichever. He was
- 24:16a many nuclear football, liable to go off at any time.
- 24:20Everyone who knew him has young Johnny and trouble stories,
- 24:24but everybody loved him because he was the sweetest little
- 24:28force of nature. Just sometimes you had to take a
- 24:31whiffle ball back to him. Mother did. Anyway, There was
- 24:35a short period when I might not have been surprised
- 24:38by my baby brother's demise. He went through a rough
- 24:41time and developed some bad habits. I knew he was indestructible,
- 24:45but accidents happen. Then a miracle, just like in a
- 24:50hall Mark movie, he was saved by a good woman.
- 24:54It took a while, but her golden heart revived his.
- 24:57She grabbed a hold and shook him up, smacked him
- 25:01into what he could be. That was twenty years ago.
- 25:04Now I'm in shock. When Mitch called, I could barely
- 25:08understand what he was saying John is ten years younger
- 25:11than me. He can't just sit down on this porch
- 25:14and die. That doesn't make any sense. It still doesn't
- 25:18make any sense. There was no warning. We messaged the
- 25:21day before he called weekly. He was the one worried
- 25:25about me. My baby brother was supposed to sing over
- 25:29me ten years older. The odds are clear. The last
- 25:33thing I thought I'd be doing is memorializing him. But
- 25:37that's what we'll be doing Saturday near his home in Elizabethtown.
- 25:42All prayers, love, healing vibes and incantations for his family
- 25:47are humbly appreciated. There are things you're just not ready for.
- 25:52We need all the help we can get. Our next
- 25:55article is titled PSC issues order to compel against Williamson
- 26:00in MWD case by Terry L. May. The City of
- 26:04Williamson has failed to provide documentation requested by the West
- 26:08Virginia Public Service Commission in reference to a complaint against
- 26:12the city. The PSC has now issued an order to
- 26:15compel for the materials. Earlier this year, Pike County, Kentucky
- 26:19based Mountain Water District filed a complaint with the West
- 26:23Virginia PSC after the Williamson Water District increased its resale
- 26:28water and sewer rates. The complaint, or appeal for the
- 26:33WVPSC to disapprove the rate request, stipulates that Mountain Water
- 26:39District is a resale customer of Williamson for water purchases
- 26:43and wastewater treatment services under separate contracts and related amendments
- 26:48between the two entities. Mountain Water District officials said the
- 26:52entity purchases twenty percent of its water from the City
- 26:56of Williamson. The complaint, which was submitted by MSD to
- 27:01the WVPSC on April tenth, stated that the city on
- 27:06March twelfth enacted two ordinances that increased wholesale water and
- 27:10sewer rates, and on March twentieth filed those ordinances with
- 27:15the WVPSC pursuant to wv Code twenty four Dash two
- 27:21Dash four b B for state approval. As part of
- 27:25the investigation into the complaint, the PSC asked for a
- 27:28corroborating documentation from Williamson, which, according to the new order
- 27:32issued on June fifteenth, the city has failed to provide.
- 27:36The order enumerates ten separate items needed to complete the process.
- 27:40The order states that the city did not provide the
- 27:43information and in some instances told it PSC it would
- 27:47have to obtain it elsewhere. Quote. On June twelfth, staff
- 27:51moved to compel the City of Williamson to respond. The
- 27:54order states Williamson filed a response on May twentieth, but
- 27:58failed to provide both most of the information requested. The
- 28:02City of Williamson suggested staff seek the information from other sources. Unfortunately,
- 28:07we'll have to cut the article short there. This concludes
