- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: We have Magnus Ferrell, the son of Will Ferrell, live
- 0:05Speaker 2: with us on Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Hello, mate.
- 0:07Speaker 1: How are you?
- 0:07Speaker 3: I'm so good. How are you?
- 0:09Speaker 4: We are good. So you're single, asleep talking, rocking the
- 0:13Speaker 4: charts all over the world. including here in Australia, have
- 0:17Speaker 4: you been here?
- 0:18Speaker 5: I have not, no.
- 0:18Speaker 4: Well, get on a bloody plane.
- 0:20Speaker 2: No, I want to know because I always hear what Americans'
- 0:22Speaker 2: perception of Australia is like and it's normally so wrong.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So I want to know when you think of.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Australia, are you one of those people that thinks there's
- 0:30Speaker 2: kangaroos just hopping around on the street everywhere or there's
- 0:33Speaker 2: spiders going to bite you and kill you everywhere you go?
- 0:36Speaker 5: A little, like just a little bit. I know that's
- 0:39Speaker 5: so wrong, but like a little bit. In the back
- 0:41Speaker 5: of your mind, you kind of want Australia to look like.
- 0:44Speaker 3: that with kangaroos i don't even know koalas everywhere no
- 0:48Speaker 3: it's just not.
- 0:49Speaker 4: A thing whereas australians we think you're all walking around
- 0:51Speaker 4: with guns in america you got a gun on you that's.
- 0:54Speaker 5: Kind of true though.
- 0:56Speaker 4: Depending on where you are right you're in california yeah
- 0:59Speaker 4: yes oh well then no right.
- 1:01Speaker 3: No, no, no. Yeah, gun laws are pretty strict here.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I mean, dude, you could go to a Big Five and, like,
- 1:06Speaker 3: purchase a weapon.
- 1:06Speaker 5: That's the crazy part.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That is mental. That is really weird to us.
- 1:09Speaker 4: A Big Five's like a Kmart or something, right?
- 1:12Speaker 5: It's a sporting goods show, yeah, or a sporting goods shop.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So it'd be like they go on a, I don't know, Kmart?
- 1:18Speaker 4: Yeah, no, no, but a sporting course.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Oh, Rebel, Rebel Sport.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Rebel Sport.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Going to get some new sand shoes and coming home
- 1:24Speaker 4: with a gun.
- 1:24Speaker 1: That's mental.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 1:26Speaker 1: That's actually crazy.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Hey, I want to talk about this song, Asleep Talking.
- 1:30Speaker 2: It's a really cool vibe and it's fully just not
- 1:33Speaker 2: what I expected when I heard.
- 1:36Speaker 5: What did you expect?
- 1:37Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:38Speaker 2: When I heard, like, Will Ferrell's son is a musician,
- 1:40Speaker 2: for some reason my brain went two places, rock or opera.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And I think the opera comes from the end of
- 1:48Speaker 1: Step Brothers.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And I just imagined you to be really operatic. And, like,
- 1:52Speaker 1: your dad's actually got a really good voice as well.
- 1:55Speaker 5: But I want to know what's... He can kind of sing.
- 1:58Speaker 5: It's kind of crazy.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I didn't really realise it, but I've seen all these
- 2:01Speaker 3: clips now and I'm like, oh, okay.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Absolutely he can. But I want to know, who are
- 2:04Speaker 1: your biggest musical influences?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Aside from your dad.
- 2:09Speaker 3: I don't know if I would say I have my
- 2:12Speaker 3: biggest musical influences. I have a long list of musical
- 2:16Speaker 3: influences because I think there's just so many great musicians
- 2:20Speaker 3: and so many great artists in the past that.
- 2:23Speaker 5: are so good. Like I love Silk Sonic. I love
- 2:25Speaker 5: Stevie Wonder.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 5: Marvin Gaye, like Gap Band, Bobby Caldwell. I like anything
- 2:32Speaker 5: old soul. Jamiroquai. I could go like, I could go on.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And on and on.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Oh, how good is Jamiroquai? What happened to him?
- 2:40Speaker 2: You know who we were talking about the other day
- 2:42Speaker 2: on this show? Remember Mika?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Was Mika a thing and he had like big girls,
- 2:46Speaker 1: you are beautiful, or are you too young for this?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Or was it not a thing?
- 2:49Speaker 4: Grace Kelly.
- 2:49Speaker 2: No, you know Grace Kelly because your dad, I think,
- 2:52Speaker 2: actually sung Grace Kelly in a viral video once. with
- 2:55Speaker 2: another famous person. Well, bring back Jamiroquai and Mika, I say.
- 2:59Speaker 2: They're the two at the same level. You're also nominated
- 3:03Speaker 2: for a VMA coming up for Best New Artist. How
- 3:06Speaker 2: does that feel?
- 3:08Speaker 3: The fact that that's a real sentence I get to
- 3:10Speaker 3: say is crazy to me. Like every time I say it,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it's just unbelievable. Yeah, I mean, that was like the
- 3:16Speaker 3: cherry on top. I went with VMAs last year and
- 3:19Speaker 3: I was like, man, I'd really love to be here.
- 3:22Speaker 5: In consideration and here we are. So it's just bonkers. Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: How much can change in a year?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Now, other people that are nominated, Miles Smith, Sienna Spiro,
- 3:32Speaker 2: Stella Lefty, all huge names as well. If it can't
- 3:35Speaker 2: be you that wins, which by the way, my vote
- 3:37Speaker 2: is with you. If it can't be you that wins,
- 3:39Speaker 2: who do you want to see win?
- 3:40Speaker 3: Oh man, it's really hard to decide because everyone's so talented,
- 3:44Speaker 3: but the one that has had the biggest effect on
- 3:47Speaker 3: me is Sienna Spyro.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Her voice is just unreal. I was lucky enough to
- 3:52Speaker 5: see her sing a song live and I don't know,
- 3:56Speaker 5: it just falls into that thing of, like, she's a
- 3:59Speaker 5: real musician. It's crazy.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Yeah, raw talent, vulnerable sounding voice. She's amazing.
- 4:04Speaker 4: We will be back with Magnus Ferrell after this. He
- 4:07Speaker 4: is going to tell us what his dad, Will Ferrell,
- 4:10Speaker 4: is really like. We'll do that next right here on Kids.
- 4:13Speaker 4: We are back with Magnus Ferrell.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Now, can we talk about your dad for a second?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Because I'm sure you get sick of talking about him.
- 4:20Speaker 2: But also what we really like about you is the
- 4:22Speaker 2: fact that you don't shy away from... your nepo baby status. Like,
- 4:26Speaker 2: you embrace it and you kind of just are like,
- 4:28Speaker 2: why would I get angry about it?
- 4:29Speaker 1: It is what it is. So is there ever been
- 4:33Speaker 1: a moment where.
- 4:34Speaker 2: You've sat there and wished you weren't the son of
- 4:36Speaker 2: Will Ferrell or you've always loved that your dad was
- 4:39Speaker 2: a huge actor who made these movies? Everyone around the
- 4:42Speaker 2: world is quoting to this day.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I don't know.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I think, like, I just have to acknowledge the immense
- 4:50Speaker 3: amount of privilege I've had.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I also... Like, I've.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Been lucky enough to chase a dream and been lucky
- 4:57Speaker 3: enough to do this thing full time. Like, some people
- 5:00Speaker 3: don't even get a chance to. So, I don't know.
- 5:03Speaker 5: It's that. But, like, I also have worked incredibly hard
- 5:06Speaker 5: to get here.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 5:07Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 5:09Speaker 3: And continue to put in the work to get better
- 5:11Speaker 3: that I believe, I don't know, it balances itself.
- 5:15Speaker 1: No, you deserve to be where you are.
- 5:17Speaker 2: And honestly, anyone who hears your music would go, okay,
- 5:20Speaker 2: this isn't a situation where he's where he is because
- 5:23Speaker 2: it's because he's a talented musician.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously it's opened some doors. I'm not
- 5:28Speaker 3: going to, like, deny that.
- 5:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 3: You have to walk through the doorway and if the
- 5:34Speaker 3: music was bad, which, by the way, that has happened
- 5:37Speaker 3: before where the music wasn't ready yet.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Oh, okay. Yeah, and so it's like that can just happen.
- 5:44Speaker 5: You still have to make really good quality music.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Do you get over people asking you about your dad then?
- 5:50Speaker 4: That could get annoying at some point.
- 5:52Speaker 3: No, I think that's kind of part of the thing.
- 5:56Speaker 5: It's like I get to do all these things.
- 5:58Speaker 3: I get to experience all these cool life experiences And
- 6:03Speaker 3: all I have to do is talk about my dad
- 6:04Speaker 3: for a little bit.
- 6:05Speaker 5: It's not.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Well, then I'm going to ask two more questions about
- 6:08Speaker 1: your dad.
- 6:08Speaker 2: First one, how old were you when you realized that
- 6:11Speaker 2: your dad was Will Ferrell?
- 6:13Speaker 1: As in like the celebrity, not your dad.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I was probably like 11 or 12 when I fully
- 6:19Speaker 3: got to see the full scope of things.
- 6:21Speaker 1: That old?
- 6:22Speaker 4: So when you were before that, what did you think
- 6:24Speaker 4: dad did? Or like, yeah, that's strange that you were older.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I knew.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I mean, like, I knew he was an actor, but
- 6:32Speaker 3: it didn't, you know, they made sure we had such
- 6:35Speaker 3: normal upbringings that.
- 6:39Speaker 5: you know, it didn't really strike us that he was famous.
- 6:42Speaker 1: That's great.
- 6:43Speaker 4: But I'm guessing as well that you're in California, LA, right?
- 6:47Speaker 4: You'd be friends with so many other people that have
- 6:49Speaker 4: parents that are actors or musicians or producers or it
- 6:53Speaker 4: had just become normal.
- 6:54Speaker 2: When we think that about California, like while I was
- 6:57Speaker 2: asking what you think of Australia, is that the truth
- 6:59Speaker 2: that in California it's just everyone's famous everywhere, like walking
- 7:02Speaker 2: around or not really?
- 7:03Speaker 5: No, it's not.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I wouldn't say that's true, no. Um, yeah, you see
- 7:07Speaker 3: the occasional celebrity, I guess, but we're, you know, they're
- 7:11Speaker 3: all just.
- 7:11Speaker 1: A pretty normal life.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:12Speaker 2: The last question on your dad is your favorite character
- 7:15Speaker 2: that he's ever played.
- 7:16Speaker 1: That's it. I'll leave it at that with your dad.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Uh, yeah, I mean, probably... Ron Burgundy.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I think Anchorman.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Anchorman, there we go.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, love it.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Hey, the Jonas Brothers are coming to Australia for the
- 7:29Speaker 2: NFL and they're going to play, it's like a full
- 7:31Speaker 2: NFL game that's being played in Melbourne and they're performing
- 7:34Speaker 2: at the halftime show. Now, I know that you're lined
- 7:36Speaker 2: up to support the Jonas Brothers on tour and I'm wondering,
- 7:39Speaker 2: is there a way that we can also get you
- 7:41Speaker 2: to Australia to perform the NFL halftime show in Melbourne?
- 7:44Speaker 5: No, that'd be really fun. I mean, if we can
- 7:46Speaker 5: make it happen, let's make it happen.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Who do we have to speak to, Mikey? Do you
- 7:49Speaker 1: know anyone we can make a call?
- 7:51Speaker 5: NFL, why?
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll call the head of the NFL.
- 7:53Speaker 5: Yeah, just call up Roger Goodell and see what he says.
- 7:56Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:56Speaker 4: And that is the head of the NFL that we
- 7:58Speaker 4: did not know.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we were like, who is it? Is it on
- 8:00Speaker 1: my notes?
- 8:01Speaker 4: Magnus' new single, Asleep Talking, is out now.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It is so good.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Everyone's loving it, mate. Thank you for being on the
- 8:09Speaker 4: show and get your ass to Australia at some point,
- 8:12Speaker 4: all right?
- 8:12Speaker 5: I appreciate it. I will very soon.
