- 1:03Speaker 2: Appreciate you.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I approciate your blessings, blessings. Wonderful to be in the building.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Thank your pastor for having me as a guest at
- 1:09Speaker 3: the church today, Oh Maine.
- 1:11Speaker 1: You know I did grow up in Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church,
- 1:14Speaker 1: so shout out to Reverend Lawston. Thank you very much
- 1:16Speaker 1: for that.
- 1:17Speaker 3: I bring you greetings from First Baptist Church of Clarkston, Mississippi,
- 1:20Speaker 3: where an Honorable Elder Griffith's my pastor. Every summer. I
- 1:25Speaker 3: used to go to a church so small. I go
- 1:27Speaker 3: to Mississippi to visit my grandma every summer. They church
- 1:30Speaker 3: only had a pastor first and third Sundays because he
- 1:33Speaker 3: had another church where he pastored second and fourth. Wow
- 1:37Speaker 3: all time. Yeah, yeah, okay, small, small.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Damn, I got to spread the wealth. I guess I understand.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you do what you need to do.
- 1:45Speaker 3: But no, I appreciate you all for having me in
- 1:47Speaker 3: the mix.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Man, All right, now, thank you so much for having me.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And you know, since we met at Tannahsee Coach's house,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you know, my first question to you is your new book.
- 1:58Speaker 1: You know, it's like basically a le to your son.
- 2:01Speaker 1: So did you let Tanna houseI know, did you?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yah? I told him I was biting the style.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Okay you first.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Man, Just so you know, it's it's kind of like
- 2:11Speaker 3: a letter, but it's more. Here are a series of stories.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Stories. Yep.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Because my pops died when I was sixteen, I get older,
- 2:19Speaker 3: I have a child in my late thirties, and I
- 2:22Speaker 3: started doing the math, and I go, damn, I didn't
- 2:24Speaker 3: learn everything from my pops. So who did I learn
- 2:26Speaker 3: it from? Oh, and you have these realizations of all
- 2:31Speaker 3: of these seeds of knowledge that were planeting you by
- 2:34Speaker 3: people that weren't related to you. So I wanted to
- 2:36Speaker 3: kind of give my son a little bit of a
- 2:38Speaker 3: like like a guidebook for values, just a broader value
- 2:42Speaker 3: system that I possess. And here's why, Because if you really,
- 2:46Speaker 3: if you really sit back then and you really like
- 2:48Speaker 3: think about, well, why do I believe that thing? You
- 2:53Speaker 3: can go back to the first time in your life
- 2:55Speaker 3: when that moral was tested or that piece of that
- 3:00Speaker 3: value was stress tests by the world, and you can go, Okay,
- 3:05Speaker 3: that's why I don't snitch because my coworker that snorted
- 3:08Speaker 3: cocaine slam, oh wow, okay, that you know, like, oh,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and I'm being silly. But then it's also in the converse.
- 3:17Speaker 3: That's why I'm so communicative with my son, because me
- 3:21Speaker 3: and my pops never had that. In the one window
- 3:23Speaker 3: he gave me into really asking him questions, deeper questions
- 3:27Speaker 3: about parenting and fatherhood, I missed that window. Well, I'm
- 3:31Speaker 3: not gonna talk cryptic to my son. I'm gonna be
- 3:33Speaker 3: out in the open. Hey boy, what did I do
- 3:36Speaker 3: this week that you liked, And what did I do
- 3:38Speaker 3: this week that you didn't like? Don't really change, but
- 3:43Speaker 3: I'm open to here. This is the suggestion box. So
- 3:48Speaker 3: I think that that's a very important dynamic to have
- 3:52Speaker 3: father to son. But but yeah, you know what Todd
- 3:56Speaker 3: has he did between the world like that was it
- 4:00Speaker 3: was definitely a big influence on how can I speak
- 4:04Speaker 3: directly to mylf. Y'all want to buy it and read it? Too? Cool?
- 4:08Speaker 3: But this is for him?
- 4:10Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 4:10Speaker 1: All right, now taking it back, as you know, as
- 4:13Speaker 1: your sweater says, you attended FAM, you and you you
- 4:17Speaker 1: know credit your time at the university was saving your
- 4:19Speaker 1: life when you got caught up in some extract, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 1: curricular activities.
- 4:25Speaker 3: You have to take credit cards because otherwise people are
- 4:27Speaker 3: thinking dope and guns.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Okay, all right, cool.
- 4:30Speaker 5: He was a scammer, yeahify, Yeah, but I mean you
- 4:34Speaker 5: you were more than just a stammer.
- 4:36Speaker 1: You had you know, you you had a few levels
- 4:38Speaker 1: to you know, to how you operate.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I was it was an innovator, king you know there
- 4:44Speaker 3: you go. You know, it's not just boil me down
- 4:47Speaker 3: and just like oh yeah, take your credit card. I
- 4:50Speaker 3: was doing my best to feed the men and Women
- 4:54Speaker 3: of Florida A and M. Because you have to understand,
- 4:57Speaker 3: our cafeteria closed at seven, but you're up till midnight,
- 5:02Speaker 3: and the only pizza spot is the Terrible One. Nobody
- 5:05Speaker 3: else will deliver it to the black side of town.
- 5:08Speaker 3: So I liberated those pizzas from Pizza Hut and brought
- 5:11Speaker 3: them back to the campus and sold them for value
- 5:14Speaker 3: prices O Monday night football in the TV room.
- 5:18Speaker 4: I heard he was also liberating some polo shirts and Tommy.
- 5:21Speaker 3: Girls, you baby steps. First you have to liberate the
- 5:27Speaker 3: credit card from the post office, which is a federal crime,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and then you take that credit card down to the
- 5:33Speaker 3: Dillots the Tommy girl.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Yeah boy, I'm from Houston, you already know, so yeah, yeah,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you know.
- 5:43Speaker 3: It's fun. You know what's funny when you get older.
- 5:46Speaker 3: The store that was like top of the line to you,
- 5:49Speaker 3: once you realize what top of the line really is.
- 5:53Speaker 2: It is, but it ain't do it, It ain't.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Doing It's just oh that was all right, Like Northoms
- 5:59Speaker 3: is the top of the middle class, and then there's
- 6:03Speaker 3: whole nother stores like this one. Doesn't I know what
- 6:06Speaker 3: I'm in the store. I can't afford when it's space
- 6:09Speaker 3: between the shirts on the rack. Does that make sense?
- 6:14Speaker 5: Yes, there's only one, and it's one of us for
- 6:17Speaker 5: a sample, because all.
- 6:18Speaker 3: The sides of all the sides of want your greasy
- 6:21Speaker 3: hands touch on all the shit that they'll have. You
- 6:24Speaker 3: look at a rack and it'll just be two shirts
- 6:27Speaker 3: of the thing that you like, and you go, oh,
- 6:28Speaker 3: they ain't got none to stop. No, they didn't put
- 6:31Speaker 3: fifty of them out there, like JC Penny. When I
- 6:34Speaker 3: see space between the rack, I already know that shirt
- 6:36Speaker 3: one thousand dollars, I can leave right now.
- 6:40Speaker 4: What made you choose fam You?
- 6:42Speaker 3: My mom went there and my pops taught there, and
- 6:45Speaker 3: it was far enough away from Birmingham where I feel
- 6:47Speaker 3: like I get a change of scenery. I think if
- 6:49Speaker 3: you go to college where you live, or close to
- 6:51Speaker 3: where you live, or around a bunch of folks you
- 6:53Speaker 3: went to high school with, you're not maximizing the experience,
- 6:58Speaker 3: because the beauty of college is that you it to
- 7:00Speaker 3: be something different. All I knew for sure is that
- 7:02Speaker 3: I want to lead the state of Alabama. So I
- 7:04Speaker 3: had Tennessee, State, Clark, Atlanta, and fam You. Those were
- 7:09Speaker 3: the I only applied to three colleges and I got
- 7:12Speaker 3: accepted at FAM you like in October of my senior year,
- 7:16Speaker 3: like early acceptance.
- 7:17Speaker 4: That's early acceptance.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I was like, all right, I'm good, this works. Yeah,
- 7:23Speaker 3: it's good. Don't you ain't gonna apply because you know,
- 7:25Speaker 3: I like kids, you know, smart kids in your school.
- 7:27Speaker 3: I've got fifteen twenty exceptance of I got one Tennessee
- 7:33Speaker 3: State and never even wrote back. I don't even know
- 7:34Speaker 3: if they got the transcript. Like, damn I was. I
- 7:39Speaker 3: was just I was good. I just knew that's where
- 7:41Speaker 3: I wanted to go. I never visited the campus. I
- 7:44Speaker 3: didn't request her bro sure it just I was like,
- 7:47Speaker 3: that feels like a good place to go where people
- 7:50Speaker 3: will look out for me. In hindsight, I probably should
- 7:55Speaker 3: have gone to Clark just because Atlanta was a better
- 8:00Speaker 3: city for journalism internships Tallahassee. Yeah, Atlanta was becoming a
- 8:06Speaker 3: media hub and Tallahassee only has three of the big
- 8:10Speaker 3: four local affiliates. And then on top of that, there's
- 8:14Speaker 3: no cable stations there, so there's just not and then
- 8:18Speaker 3: you're competing with Florida State, And at that point, for me,
- 8:23Speaker 3: I had I was on probation, so I'm really not
- 8:26Speaker 3: gonna get no internship. I had to. I talked about
- 8:28Speaker 3: it in the book. I had to create my own
- 8:30Speaker 3: internship just to get the internship credit I needed to graduate.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So you know, that's that's probably one regret. But then
- 8:41Speaker 3: you know, on the other side of it all, if
- 8:43Speaker 3: I were in Atlanta and I had gotten caught up
- 8:46Speaker 3: in the mess I gotten caught up in, I would
- 8:48Speaker 3: have been expelled. But because I'm baptized and fam you
- 8:53Speaker 3: there were enough people on that campus, within the family
- 8:56Speaker 3: ecosystem that looked out and a lot of it was
- 8:59Speaker 3: just on the strength about Pop's reputation, in my mom's reputation,
- 9:03Speaker 3: So that kept me from throwing my life away completely.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So you know, I feel like at the end of
- 9:10Speaker 3: the day, I was, I was where I was supposed
- 9:12Speaker 3: to be, And you know, there's there's no regrets in
- 9:16Speaker 3: terms of man if I'd have gone to that school
- 9:19Speaker 3: because you know, also, you be in Atlanta, I messed around,
- 9:22Speaker 3: had three babies, but no, d C was too far
- 9:30Speaker 3: and in my brain in the South, d C was
- 9:33Speaker 3: New York, and I know it's not so yeah exactly,
- 9:39Speaker 3: y'all in bubble.
- 9:39Speaker 5: I'm from New York. I'm from New York and that's
- 9:42Speaker 5: not the South.
- 9:42Speaker 2: I've learned.
- 9:43Speaker 3: All I knew was school days. So to me, d
- 9:46Speaker 3: C is New York. Like y'all got on boots and
- 9:49Speaker 3: a vests that everybody on campus and d everybody in
- 9:53Speaker 3: d C dressed like PM Dawn. I was like, all right,
- 9:58Speaker 3: this this, I'm so old. I was.
- 10:03Speaker 2: I understand yeah and so like.
- 10:07Speaker 3: But it wasn't until I got to college where I
- 10:09Speaker 3: found out all these East Coast cats don't run with
- 10:11Speaker 3: each other like that. But the way y'all group us
- 10:14Speaker 3: all in is bamas. And we were just like, okay, yeah,
- 10:18Speaker 3: you cannot call somebody from Philly or New York.
- 10:21Speaker 6: They be ready to fight. I'm from the New York.
- 10:23Speaker 6: Don't you bring them New York. I'm from Philly.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Son to jealousy, it's pure jealousy. I'm from Brooklyn, so
- 10:28Speaker 4: it's always jealousy.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I get it it.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Yeah, can you please explain this tweet right here? Relationship
- 10:38Speaker 1: question tweet and got nervous.
- 10:40Speaker 3: I've said some ship on Twitter.
- 10:42Speaker 1: This ain't even the hardest if you lost your spouse
- 10:45Speaker 1: in the Thano snap. But five years later, the Avengers
- 10:47Speaker 1: brought them back, but you already remarried with three kids
- 10:50Speaker 1: and spent the life in the shirts on a fail
- 10:52Speaker 1: food truck. Do you get back with your old spouse
- 10:55Speaker 1: or stay with the new Snap family?
- 10:57Speaker 3: So apparently there's a TV show based on that. I
- 10:59Speaker 3: didn't know this. There was really no People replied to
- 11:05Speaker 3: that tweet from a couple of years ago, and they
- 11:08Speaker 3: told me so basically like black, like you can check
- 11:12Speaker 3: it real quick. But like, I think it was ABC
- 11:14Speaker 3: or something, But there was a show about a bunch
- 11:17Speaker 3: of people who disappeared and then reappeared years later, and
- 11:21Speaker 3: we're trying to figure out there, Oh it.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Was It wasn't.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It wasn't about the Snap family, but it was about that, yes,
- 11:28Speaker 1: missing like some sort of wrapping happened.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Yeah, and then they came back and.
- 11:32Speaker 2: The later Yes, is that the forty four or whatever
- 11:35Speaker 2: it was. It was a few shows, for real, There
- 11:37Speaker 2: was a few of something like that.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, So you know, first off, let's let's think
- 11:45Speaker 3: about that question logically.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Yeah, because the failed food truck means a lot.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Yeah, because it's very similar to the end of Castaway.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I don't know if you ever saw Castaway, Tom, Yes,
- 11:54Speaker 3: So for the folks who never saw it. He's on
- 11:57Speaker 3: the island for years and years. He has a wife,
- 12:00Speaker 3: and when he comes back, when he's found and he
- 12:03Speaker 3: comes back to America, his wife has a new man,
- 12:06Speaker 3: she has a baby, and she basically tells, Buddy, I
- 12:09Speaker 3: thought you was dead. Sorry about that, big dog, and
- 12:13Speaker 3: closes the door in his face and like it's like
- 12:16Speaker 3: one of the last things in the movie. And I
- 12:20Speaker 3: kind of gotta agree with the wife, because here's the thing.
- 12:25Speaker 3: If if my girl left and then I just assumed
- 12:30Speaker 3: she was dead after you know, the federal limit is
- 12:33Speaker 3: seven years where I can declare you dead and dissolve
- 12:36Speaker 3: your estate if you come back in year eight talking
- 12:40Speaker 3: about baby, what's up? Even if I get back with you, you're
- 12:44Speaker 3: gonna hold that shit over my head and the relationship's
- 12:48Speaker 3: gonna be awkward because you're just gonna be asking me
- 12:51Speaker 3: a bunch of questions about why I ain't come look
- 12:53Speaker 3: for you, and then I'm gonna have to explain to
- 12:56Speaker 3: you I did, Like I'm not gonna lit the rest
- 12:59Speaker 3: of my life's sad because you stranded somewhere or Thanos
- 13:04Speaker 3: snapped you into how I was supposed to know. Iron
- 13:06Speaker 3: Man was gonna bring your ass back.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I ain't.
- 13:10Speaker 3: No iron Man was gonna bring you back.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But are you gonna stay with the failed food truck?
- 13:14Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean, but you know what, but because you
- 13:17Speaker 3: were my previous girl, you're welcome to stay here for
- 13:19Speaker 3: a minute. I will explain this situation to my new
- 13:22Speaker 3: wife and I'll be like, look, you remember when Thano's
- 13:27Speaker 3: killed half the country? Yeah, she back? Can she stay
- 13:33Speaker 3: and kick you for a quickment? And and I let
- 13:35Speaker 3: my wife. I will convince my wife to let my
- 13:39Speaker 3: old wife stay in the garage.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Not the garage.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Well, you can't be in the house. That's just weird.
- 13:46Speaker 3: She gon't me and never do. And she just you've
- 13:48Speaker 3: been stranded for seven years on an island. You know
- 13:51Speaker 3: that that booty lost weight. Shit, No, you can't be
- 13:55Speaker 3: in here throwing all that around respect anything. Does everybody
- 14:08Speaker 3: know that? Like, yeah, look, that's why dudes be getting
- 14:13Speaker 3: caught up in that HR drama at work, because you
- 14:15Speaker 3: don't end your harassment with respectfully.
- 14:18Speaker 2: It's like saying lol at the end of it.
- 14:19Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 14:20Speaker 4: You say whatever?
- 14:21Speaker 3: You know that ship don't fix no text. You say
- 14:24Speaker 3: something crazy and then you see the dot dot dot
- 14:27Speaker 3: come up, then the dots disappear. You'd be like, oh no, yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 3: oh lord.
- 14:36Speaker 2: You try to say lol at the end, and then
- 14:38Speaker 2: you know, hope for the best.
- 14:42Speaker 5: You know you've said before. You know we're talking about
- 14:44Speaker 5: than on snaps and all that stuff. You know, it's
- 14:46Speaker 5: reminding me of comic books. And you just said before
- 14:48Speaker 5: you don't have it. You didn't feel like you had
- 14:50Speaker 5: a real childhood. So how did you find time to
- 14:52Speaker 5: really explore your imagination and getting touched in nerd the time?
- 14:56Speaker 3: Uh? For me, it was cartoons and things, yes, land,
- 15:00Speaker 3: you know, I had a lot of toys and stuff.
- 15:02Speaker 3: You know, I remember taking the g I Joe's. So
- 15:06Speaker 3: there used to be this robot series, like it's Lego
- 15:10Speaker 3: Techniques now, but there used to be this robot toys
- 15:12Speaker 3: series called Robotics, and Robotics was I don't even want
- 15:18Speaker 3: to call it transformers, but it was like a dinosaur
- 15:21Speaker 3: that could turn into a spaceship or like a spaceship.
- 15:25Speaker 3: It was like, what's the Japanese joints that come out
- 15:28Speaker 3: the ocean? Nongers know, the things that kill the things
- 15:34Speaker 3: that come out the oceanaphic griam niggass So whatever killed
- 15:40Speaker 3: the kaiju. That's what robotics were. Okay, Okay, So you
- 15:45Speaker 3: could make these man made robots that were shaped like
- 15:48Speaker 3: animals or whatever, and so those I would team those
- 15:52Speaker 3: up with G I. Joe's and they would have these
- 15:54Speaker 3: battles against the transformers. So you know, it was it
- 15:57Speaker 3: was real big imagination. You know our voltron of course,
- 16:03Speaker 3: but you know, for me, it was just I could
- 16:05Speaker 3: take the styrofoam out of stuff and turn that into
- 16:09Speaker 3: an army base. I could take bro I could take styrofoam,
- 16:12Speaker 3: put that joint in the tub. Now it's a floating base,
- 16:15Speaker 3: a marine base. Now I got the little lego boat
- 16:18Speaker 3: coming up to the marine base. I got the snorkel man.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Did y'all ever have the snorkel man where you would
- 16:24Speaker 3: put the bacon, soda and vinegar in the in the
- 16:27Speaker 3: tank in his back and then drop it in the
- 16:30Speaker 3: water and then he like fizzled cross.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I think, I know what you're about, but I did
- 16:34Speaker 2: not have it.
- 16:35Speaker 3: There was a making Nize one two with the legs
- 16:38Speaker 3: like did whatever.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I definitely wanted something like that, but I never had
- 16:42Speaker 1: that joint. Yeah, I think, and like, I know what
- 16:45Speaker 1: robotics are too. I had g I Joe, some Transformers,
- 16:47Speaker 1: I probably had some robotics at some point, but I
- 16:50Speaker 1: definitely did not have the man who swam across the tub.
- 16:53Speaker 3: You know something I've been amazed at when I like
- 16:56Speaker 3: really dig into my childhood and like the things that
- 16:58Speaker 3: I enjoyed, and I try to go back and enjoy
- 17:00Speaker 3: them now. There was an old cartoon series called Centurions,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and I went back and I'm like, I'm gonna.
- 17:08Speaker 6: Order the DVDs. I wanna watch every episode the Centurion.
- 17:12Speaker 6: I'm gonna watch all sixty seventy episode It's twenty three episodes, bro,
- 17:20Speaker 6: That's all it was. It was twenty three, twenty four episodes.
- 17:24Speaker 6: It was only on the air for a year, but
- 17:27Speaker 6: they ran that bitch for another three or four.
- 17:31Speaker 3: And then I get into a rabbit hole on YouTube,
- 17:34Speaker 3: and I'm sure you've been to these channels about why
- 17:36Speaker 3: this cartoon failed or why this toy failed or whatever,
- 17:40Speaker 3: and they were just it basically just said the Centurion
- 17:42Speaker 3: toy was too damn big and kids wasn't fucking with
- 17:45Speaker 3: it because transformers were smaller. GI Joe's was smaller, ThunderCats
- 17:51Speaker 3: were slightly smaller, even ThunderCats didn't have a whole lot
- 17:55Speaker 3: of episodes. Big yeah. So this idea of how you
- 18:01Speaker 3: remember something versus what it was at the times. Oh,
- 18:06Speaker 3: this was just to sell toys, and the toys didn't sell,
- 18:09Speaker 3: so they canceled the show. And maybe it was a
- 18:12Speaker 3: good ass show.
- 18:14Speaker 1: It happens to the best of them. Something more related
- 18:17Speaker 1: to your book. Right, as a nerd growing up, my dad,
- 18:20Speaker 1: you know, he was definitely he was there, but he
- 18:23Speaker 1: wasn't there. It is the best way to say it.
- 18:26Speaker 1: He was there in the house, but he just wasn't
- 18:28Speaker 1: always there, and he really struggled, especially to connect with
- 18:33Speaker 1: me on the nerd side of things. So do you
- 18:36Speaker 1: have any advice to fathers now. I know you went
- 18:40Speaker 1: through your own struggles with your own father. I mean
- 18:42Speaker 1: it was like completely different obviously, But do you have
- 18:45Speaker 1: any advice for fathers out there now who are like
- 18:49Speaker 1: struggling to connect with their sons on different things.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I think you have to just meet your kids where
- 18:54Speaker 3: they are being to the things they're into. If you
- 18:58Speaker 3: really look at if you look at bonding with people,
- 19:03Speaker 3: it's about getting them to talk to you about the
- 19:07Speaker 3: things they're excited about, and that base level principle goes
- 19:12Speaker 3: for father's son, it goes for a husband, wife, it
- 19:16Speaker 3: goes for boss to supportin it just get people, find
- 19:21Speaker 3: out what people are interested in, and try to talk
- 19:24Speaker 3: to them about it just a little bit. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 3: I ain't never watched Harry Potter. Harry Potter's never been
- 19:29Speaker 3: my cup of tea, never looked at it. And number one,
- 19:34Speaker 3: I think that was a generation and a half to
- 19:36Speaker 3: remove by the time Harry Potter came. I'm forty six.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Just as a reference point that I never backpedaled into
- 19:44Speaker 3: Harry Potter. I think I'm ten years fifteen years too
- 19:47Speaker 3: old for it, right, So I've just never bothered with it.
- 19:50Speaker 3: I watched Lord of the Rings because I had to
- 19:54Speaker 3: read the Hobbit books in high school. So let me
- 19:58Speaker 3: see what you know. You're always curious about the visuals
- 20:00Speaker 3: of what something you read, right, I have my son, well, Buddy, Buddy,
- 20:07Speaker 3: Buddy watched a lot of Harry Potter. His mom came
- 20:09Speaker 3: up on it, so she passing down the joint to him.
- 20:13Speaker 3: And now I'm I'm asking questions and I'm not gonna
- 20:18Speaker 3: like it's high fine cinema. As a Christopher Nolan fan,
- 20:23Speaker 3: no I can't just watch Harry Potter fight a two
- 20:25Speaker 3: hit a snaky but like this is great. I'd watch
- 20:27Speaker 3: it without my child, but I'm happy to experience it
- 20:30Speaker 3: with him. And that's the whole part. That's the whole
- 20:34Speaker 3: point of parenting is to go on this journey with
- 20:36Speaker 3: your child and guide them, you know, in every which way.
- 20:40Speaker 3: And I've learned some stuff from watching the stuff. And
- 20:43Speaker 3: you know, our choice in movies is so sometimes ridiculously
- 20:47Speaker 3: similar and sometimes ridiculously you know, drastically different. And I
- 20:53Speaker 3: think if you're a man and you're trying to connect
- 20:57Speaker 3: with your child, especially if if you if the kid
- 21:00Speaker 3: is not in the home with you now, I think
- 21:04Speaker 3: it's very very important to be in a place where
- 21:08Speaker 3: you can at least communicate outside the house. Like if
- 21:13Speaker 3: you ain't with the kid, you can at least call
- 21:14Speaker 3: him and go, hey, I just rewatched part four, help
- 21:17Speaker 3: me understand one more time about the thing that's room
- 21:20Speaker 3: and the Hagrid and the wolf. And kids will open up,
- 21:25Speaker 3: they're excited about it, and then it makes them open
- 21:28Speaker 3: to learning about your world and the things that you're into.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:33Speaker 5: Absolutely, I will have to admit, like seam similarly with me,
- 21:36Speaker 5: like my parents, they know what the hell I was into,
- 21:38Speaker 5: but they asked the questions, and then that made me
- 21:40Speaker 5: realize that they cared at least about my interest.
- 21:42Speaker 4: And you got to hit the nail on the head.
- 21:44Speaker 4: That's absolutely something that the you today need.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You know, when you're talking about how you're raising your kid,
- 21:50Speaker 5: how you're trying to be into what he's into, and
- 21:52Speaker 5: I know you're trying to also impart some.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Wisdom as black people.
- 21:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 21:56Speaker 5: One of the things that my family has said, like
- 21:58Speaker 5: sometimes you got a gatekeep and I was curious, in
- 22:01Speaker 5: your head, do you think there are some black things
- 22:03Speaker 5: as we call it lingo food style that we need
- 22:06Speaker 5: to keep and not share?
- 22:08Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know.
- 22:10Speaker 2: How how do we?
- 22:11Speaker 3: How do we do it?
- 22:12Speaker 2: Though?
- 22:14Speaker 3: Well? The question?
- 22:16Speaker 5: I know one of the things one of the things
- 22:17Speaker 5: I see a lot online is like if someone's trying
- 22:19Speaker 5: to explain what what some lingo means, they like, don't
- 22:22Speaker 5: say that online.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Don't tell no, don't tell them what that means, that that's.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Our stuff, Like they'll figure it out evah, or they
- 22:32Speaker 1: use it the wrong way like whoke or something like that.
- 22:34Speaker 2: You know, that was that was straight theF so Yeah, here's.
- 22:38Speaker 3: What I would say instead, instead of don't translate it,
- 22:45Speaker 3: don't congratulate it when you see it. M Like, if
- 22:50Speaker 3: you see white people's swags, serve thing, resist the urge
- 22:58Speaker 3: to join the swags, don't say, don't steal my culture. Yes, okay,
- 23:03Speaker 3: I see y'all. What's good, good job.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Don't give them a cookie for it.
- 23:10Speaker 3: Yeah, don't look out that when you go. You did it,
- 23:14Speaker 3: You scored black points, hooray, Like I don't think you
- 23:18Speaker 3: have to do that.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Here.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Here's here's the thing about black culture. Like we love
- 23:21Speaker 3: to say, black culture influences the world. Black culture is
- 23:24Speaker 3: American culture. Black culture, hip hop is a worldly Okay, well,
- 23:28Speaker 3: if that's true, then eventually white people are gonna get
- 23:30Speaker 3: to it. Eventually you're gonna have Koreans saying nigga. Eventually
- 23:35Speaker 3: you're gonna have people who don't look like you dancing
- 23:37Speaker 3: like you because they're influenced by it, because it is cool,
- 23:40Speaker 3: because it is dope. You know, you're gonna have people
- 23:43Speaker 3: neck rolling and talking in is it aa ve? You
- 23:46Speaker 3: know the bonics as they used to say back in
- 23:49Speaker 3: my day, we called it bonics. Like those things are
- 23:54Speaker 3: just all byproducts of the influence of this culture. So
- 23:58Speaker 3: you know, you can be annoyed by everything, you turn
- 24:00Speaker 3: around and celebrate the fact that it's everywhere, well everywhere
- 24:04Speaker 3: means sometimes not black folks doing it too.
- 24:10Speaker 4: I hear you, man, Thank you. What's the best advice
- 24:13Speaker 4: you can give to people?
- 24:14Speaker 5: We talk a lot to our listeners and they are
- 24:16Speaker 5: having a very ourselves too, having a very hard time
- 24:19Speaker 5: managing the current social political climate right now.
- 24:22Speaker 4: What advice would you give to people? And also how
- 24:24Speaker 4: are you managing yourself?
- 24:27Speaker 3: For me, I take time as best I can to
- 24:30Speaker 3: try to read and slow down. I would say one
- 24:33Speaker 3: major thing, and I say this as a full fledged
- 24:36Speaker 3: seeing an employee on Saturday nights, watch the local news
- 24:43Speaker 3: when you can instead of consuming national news. Local news
- 24:47Speaker 3: still has its own slants to it, but it's shorter,
- 24:50Speaker 3: it's quicker, it's not as doomsday ish. If you will
- 24:57Speaker 3: spend time with friends, people you love, people you rock with,
- 25:00Speaker 3: my friends, then spend time with activities that help you
- 25:02Speaker 3: forget about where you are, like, this is my joint
- 25:05Speaker 3: right here, that's my book. So nice, Okay, I got
- 25:12Speaker 3: we got the switch on deck at all times.
- 25:15Speaker 2: What you're playing right.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Now MLB the show twenty five, but we got we
- 25:23Speaker 3: got the Mario card on there. Of course, we got
- 25:25Speaker 3: the the Sega Genesis or one. Yeah buddy, Yeah, So
- 25:35Speaker 3: I go, I go Sega Genesis a little bit, and
- 25:38Speaker 3: then I bought some jankie ghetto ass. Hey, whoever created
- 25:44Speaker 3: airplane flight simulator combat Zone? You need your ass beats.
- 25:58Speaker 3: The buttons don't do what the fuck they supposed to. Like,
- 26:02Speaker 3: you go to the controls and they say this way
- 26:04Speaker 3: is up and then the plane turned left.
- 26:06Speaker 2: How is up? Left?
- 26:08Speaker 4: You can Teleroy the only one in that support chat
- 26:10Speaker 4: that support for him.
- 26:11Speaker 2: All the chick as I am, It's me, It's me,
- 26:15Speaker 2: y'all some hoes.
- 26:18Speaker 3: And I tried to find like the developer on like
- 26:21Speaker 3: on social media to complain directly, like I'm gonna use
- 26:24Speaker 3: my blue Star celebrity. They got like one post from
- 26:28Speaker 3: twenty eighteen and some shit like this company is not
- 26:32Speaker 3: a serious company.
- 26:34Speaker 2: But I'm so desperate.
- 26:35Speaker 3: I'm so desperate for flight simulator games other than like
- 26:40Speaker 3: an ACE Combat, which is fine, but that's more coin
- 26:46Speaker 3: op Arkadie, and I want something that's a little more
- 26:50Speaker 3: Microsoft serious. Yeah, I'm trying to go full DCS where
- 26:55Speaker 3: I got to learn the power up procedures for every aircraft.
- 26:59Speaker 3: But my point is I try to find things and
- 27:05Speaker 3: activities that invoke stillness and consume less chaotic versions of
- 27:10Speaker 3: the things that I know I need. You know, one
- 27:13Speaker 3: upside to leave in the Daily Show is that my
- 27:15Speaker 3: need to my need to consume news across all channels decrease.
- 27:21Speaker 3: For seeing men, I just need to know what happened.
- 27:24Speaker 3: I don't need to know anybody's opinions and slants because
- 27:26Speaker 3: I'm not trying to write a correspondence segment that has
- 27:31Speaker 3: an angle that hasn't been presented to the world.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So the.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Needs within the job are different. So that part has
- 27:42Speaker 3: helped me to lighten up a little bit.
- 27:44Speaker 5: But yeah, excellent, all right, real quick, I just want
- 27:47Speaker 5: to give you some rap questions we have. These are
- 27:49Speaker 5: quick fire questions. The first question three six Mafia or
- 27:54Speaker 5: April and MJG.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Let's start something rough.
- 28:00Speaker 3: I gotta go ball and g thank you just because
- 28:04Speaker 3: I came up on Lay It Down, and I came
- 28:06Speaker 3: up on Crime Boss and Swamp House and they just
- 28:10Speaker 3: pre date three six, and I really do feel like
- 28:14Speaker 3: them two boys really did lay the blueprint for a
- 28:17Speaker 3: lot of what Memphis wrapped eventually became mm hmm and
- 28:24Speaker 3: skinny Skinny Pimp.
- 28:26Speaker 2: Was he from Memphis to Yeah?
- 28:28Speaker 3: I think so yeah from Ryan, but he was more
- 28:30Speaker 3: of a base, you know, bass guy, but same same game.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Man.
- 28:35Speaker 1: That might be the first mention I lay it down
- 28:37Speaker 1: on our show, sadly, but thank you for that.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Y'all should be talking about lay it down every single
- 28:41Speaker 3: week like that's I mean him, that's right, A favorite
- 28:46Speaker 3: breaking Thieves and hold the gods in changing hands.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Man, you're already to lay it down like a fresh
- 28:54Speaker 2: of the dominoes. All right? The wire are breaking bad?
- 28:58Speaker 3: Wire?
- 29:00Speaker 2: All right?
- 29:00Speaker 3: Not even close. The answer is always the wire. The
- 29:03Speaker 3: second answer is the shield. The third answer is breaking bad. Okay,
- 29:10Speaker 3: and wherever you want to put sopranos, though I low
- 29:14Speaker 3: key feel like better call Saul kind of deserves to
- 29:18Speaker 3: be in that conversation. But I can see if you
- 29:20Speaker 3: want to one A one B it with Breaking Bad.
- 29:23Speaker 4: Yes, definitely.
- 29:27Speaker 5: If you could have a theme song play when you
- 29:29Speaker 5: walk into a room, what would it be?
- 29:33Speaker 3: Oh, the player's ball reprised? And who is Southern playeristic?
- 29:39Speaker 3: With the pianos?
- 29:40Speaker 5: Mayor cattle Lexa colem from Everywhere.
- 29:47Speaker 3: And the good because.
- 29:52Speaker 4: You did.
- 29:59Speaker 3: It's either that or it's Big Timers. How you love that?
- 30:03Speaker 3: Volume one and the song is called Beautiful and it's
- 30:07Speaker 3: just many No one's heard it, but it's it's it's
- 30:12Speaker 3: one of the most amazing fucking songs of all time.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Just when you tonight it's ignorant.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I'm just gonna read you the lyrics so you can
- 30:25Speaker 3: understand what a feel good song this is. Now, I'm
- 30:30Speaker 3: feeling good and fine, smoking green and drinking wine ten
- 30:34Speaker 3: thousand dollars at the bar. I guess that makes me
- 30:37Speaker 3: a super duper star, drinking ripple and Tanga ray, a
- 30:41Speaker 3: brand new drink. I call it rip a Ray. My
- 30:45Speaker 3: life is beautiful and it's just like that's the chorus,
- 30:51Speaker 3: second verse, Take me Baby, this is the most nigga
- 30:53Speaker 3: shit speaking three to six. Put up in that okay
- 30:58Speaker 3: many fresh second big time, It's beautiful. Take me Baby
- 31:02Speaker 3: to the motel. When we're finished, you can go tell Esa,
- 31:06Speaker 3: Lisa and down how we got button naked and got
- 31:09Speaker 3: it on. How I split you, hit you and bring
- 31:12Speaker 3: you home, then stole your change your reins and hair
- 31:15Speaker 3: and bones. I'm so beautiful. Why are you still a jewelry?
- 31:21Speaker 1: Girls about it too? Like you had me in the
- 31:24Speaker 1: first half. IM not gonna live.
- 31:28Speaker 3: We go to the motel, we have sex. I take
- 31:30Speaker 3: you home and drop you off like a gentleman. And
- 31:32Speaker 3: then you're not looking.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Did I rob you?
- 31:36Speaker 1: Right?
- 31:37Speaker 2: I tell you to tell your girls about it. That's
- 31:40Speaker 2: because I was with them. You know, you say, ohyeah,
- 31:41Speaker 2: tell your girls how I hit it.
- 31:42Speaker 1: You know, took you home. You know now they'll want
- 31:44Speaker 1: something to now. But no, also time I.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Ship so that so in state flying Paul. Oh, I
- 31:56Speaker 3: didn't know this was a theme, and apparently it is.
- 32:01Speaker 3: DJ Paul is a dog when you should not trust
- 32:04Speaker 3: trust you leave your drink around me, nigga, your drink go,
- 32:07Speaker 3: don drunk.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Girl around me.
- 32:13Speaker 4: Leave your green around me. Gonna get smoked up?
- 32:15Speaker 3: He said, no, yeah, you leave your green around me.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Nigga green go and get smoked up and leave your
- 32:20Speaker 3: drink around me. Believe that ship gonna get drunk up.
- 32:23Speaker 3: What unsavory motherfucker. It's just drinking. Like I know, it's alcohol.
- 32:29Speaker 3: Technically it kills germs. But yo, that's you a nasty
- 32:32Speaker 3: nigga man. If you just you just walking around the club,
- 32:36Speaker 3: waiting for people to put their drink down.
- 32:40Speaker 2: I just got an amateur DJ.
- 32:42Speaker 4: Please now have an image of just happening.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I don't need this. How he opens it up, you know,
- 32:47Speaker 2: with his verse saying.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Trust you're talking about. The whole song is about I
- 32:54Speaker 3: stay fly till I die. I got blady. You don't
- 32:57Speaker 3: have to do this, Paul.
- 32:59Speaker 2: You know, just letting you know.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Mister Paul, you don't have to drink this niggas. It's
- 33:04Speaker 3: an eight dollar hennessy.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Why would you know that?
- 33:08Speaker 3: I respect it. I'm sorry, I know this is rapid fire.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I'm talking.
- 33:11Speaker 2: No, this is.
- 33:12Speaker 5: Fine, this is totally fine. I have another one for you. Uh,
- 33:16Speaker 5: mister Roywood Junr. So you have no choice but to
- 33:19Speaker 5: run for office with a comic book villain.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Who would you choose and why?
- 33:24Speaker 3: On the one hand, I would run for president with
- 33:28Speaker 3: Heath Ledger Joker as my vice president because I feel
- 33:33Speaker 3: like it would it would protect me from assassination.
- 33:38Speaker 2: That's facts.
- 33:39Speaker 1: When you're over a lot of Middle America, it seems
- 33:42Speaker 1: to say some people like that type of chaos.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Yeah, nobody from the Superman universe. Most DC universe villains
- 33:51Speaker 3: are just they're just okay to me anyway, I think
- 33:57Speaker 3: kill Monger would help me some crossover.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Well, he already got the vote, the black vote.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Yeah no, no, kill Marker got the streets. The streets
- 34:07Speaker 3: might be you know. Okay, now, kill Marker for sure
- 34:12Speaker 3: is gonna scare away them. I can't take him with
- 34:15Speaker 3: me to the Iowa Caucus.
- 34:19Speaker 2: He can't take it with you anywhere.
- 34:21Speaker 3: I don't know. That's a tough question though, because I
- 34:23Speaker 3: really don't. I don't know if I like that answer,
- 34:25Speaker 3: because I don't completely consider kill Manger a villain. I
- 34:28Speaker 3: consider him inflicting. Yeah, he's just conflicting ideologies. I don't
- 34:34Speaker 3: want to vilify that point of view completely. But I'm
- 34:38Speaker 3: like going through all of the Marvel movies in my head,
- 34:42Speaker 3: and nah, I think I think the Joker. I think
- 34:46Speaker 3: the Joker even even more so than Thanos Winter Soldier. Maybe.
- 34:53Speaker 3: I know he becomes hero later, but at one point
- 34:56Speaker 3: he was a villain.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Oh you need the white vote though.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Bucky. I think Bucky helps.
- 35:02Speaker 2: You a lot of white votes. The good hair and.
- 35:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah that's right. What about Oh I got it?
- 35:14Speaker 3: O rin E.
- 35:17Speaker 4: From kill Bill from.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Kill Bill, Lucy Luke because she was a CEO. She
- 35:24Speaker 3: was the leader of the Crazy eighty eights, and she
- 35:26Speaker 3: was chopping fucker's heads off. And the staff meeting, that's
- 35:29Speaker 3: how we meet her. We are introduced to Lucy Luke's character.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Would she beheads one of her top advisors? That's what
- 35:38Speaker 3: you want. That's how you come across the aisle. Slash slight,
- 35:43Speaker 3: slash for your head off.
- 35:45Speaker 2: That's how you wanted the press.
- 35:47Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, final answer, O rin kill Bill. That's the
- 35:52Speaker 3: villain I want right there.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Not at all. If you could have any one superpower,
- 35:59Speaker 2: what would it be?
- 36:04Speaker 3: You're still want invisibility, but part of me feels like
- 36:11Speaker 3: super strength because that's the most profitable power nowadays. You
- 36:17Speaker 3: hit a baseball, throw a baseball pretty well, eight hundred
- 36:21Speaker 3: million dollars guaranteed.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Is all related to profit?
- 36:25Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Because I'm not thinking about a superpower and
- 36:29Speaker 3: the means of helping people. I don't care about people anymore.
- 36:32Speaker 3: I think it's how can I make money, because I'm
- 36:36Speaker 3: not going to run around save the world and stop
- 36:38Speaker 3: trains and be looke Cage and save Harlem and a target.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Hoodie all the time.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Like I told I've told her so many times though
- 36:48Speaker 1: that I'm winning three, no two NBA championships, and I
- 36:53Speaker 1: don't want to disrespect you know, Kobe or Jordan.
- 36:55Speaker 2: I'm not winning more or king.
- 36:57Speaker 3: You know, I'm not winning more.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Than a king for real.
- 37:00Speaker 1: In the morning came so two quick championships and I'm out,
- 37:03Speaker 1: you know what I mean, And I'm chilling.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Get your guaranteed money.
- 37:06Speaker 1: You're not guaranteed money, you know, sneaker deals all that.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And then I'm doing endorsements, you know, because I'm I'm
- 37:11Speaker 1: going booth wild in those two years, you know what
- 37:13Speaker 1: I mean, I'm doing insane level.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I'm dunking on everyone.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Now, I'm going baseball. I'm breaking Barry Bonds home run record.
- 37:26Speaker 3: I'm steal all the basis those. Yeah, I'm just I'm
- 37:30Speaker 3: gonna be black. Show hey, you're not how much more love?
- 37:33Speaker 3: You know? Not much crazier. Baseball would be just American
- 37:40Speaker 3: American American. If he was black, they were show hey
- 37:45Speaker 3: played two other sports. They wouldn't let him play baseball.
- 37:48Speaker 3: They'd have paid off his family to take a bribe
- 37:50Speaker 3: to keep him from going into baseball. Some AAU coach
- 37:54Speaker 3: with about his mama trans am some other bullshit car.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I've seen one recently and it was like I felt
- 38:06Speaker 1: like that I'd got into a Delorian or.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Something because it was the old school top yo.
- 38:11Speaker 2: It was a classic what is a DeLorean.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Down?
- 38:17Speaker 1: Yeah? I know you got to get out of here.
- 38:19Speaker 1: So one last one. Right when you left the Daily Show,
- 38:24Speaker 1: you had no idea that you were going to end
- 38:25Speaker 1: up on Seeing Inn with your own show, right, no clue,
- 38:29Speaker 1: no clue at all. So it's this is really like
- 38:32Speaker 1: near and dear to my heart even But you know,
- 38:34Speaker 1: how do you as a creative, how do you know
- 38:38Speaker 1: when it's time to leave.
- 38:40Speaker 3: When you have ideas that you know you may not
- 38:44Speaker 3: be able to do at this place. And it's not
- 38:48Speaker 3: because Daily Show was hating and keeping me from every
- 38:53Speaker 3: single thing. It's just the way that building works. Things
- 38:57Speaker 3: are just done a certain way, and this is what
- 38:59Speaker 3: we do. It's like you could never go on Saturday
- 39:03Speaker 3: Night Live and pitch a Chapel show or Key and
- 39:07Speaker 3: Peel style sketch. Those aren't the kinds of sketches we
- 39:12Speaker 3: do here. We might do one of those a week,
- 39:15Speaker 3: but everything else need to be shot in the studio
- 39:18Speaker 3: and performed literally live for the audience. So I think
- 39:23Speaker 3: you start looking at whether or not this is the
- 39:26Speaker 3: place where your ideas are best expoused and you can
- 39:32Speaker 3: still stay and do stuff, and you know this and
- 39:35Speaker 3: about turning it back on the whole institution. If you
- 39:38Speaker 3: can make the money while coming up with the next
- 39:41Speaker 3: creative thing, so be it. I didn't feel like I
- 39:44Speaker 3: could do that because the job of corresponding is very
- 39:47Speaker 3: time consuming, and that's the time I need for the
- 39:52Speaker 3: stillness after Sudoku and playing garbage flight sims to really
- 39:59Speaker 3: idea when I have that stillness. I can't have stillness
- 40:02Speaker 3: if I got to be in the edit. I can't
- 40:03Speaker 3: have stillness if I'm out traveling for three days and
- 40:07Speaker 3: you know, on my feet for nine hours interviewing people
- 40:10Speaker 3: in the street. So you know, I just didn't have that.
- 40:14Speaker 3: So I like, I, I know there's something else, But
- 40:17Speaker 3: the first thing I have to do is leave here
- 40:20Speaker 3: so that I can have the space and the opportunity
- 40:27Speaker 3: to to to grow, you know. The only the only
- 40:31Speaker 3: thing I could really compare it to like at the day,
- 40:34Speaker 3: like in my book, I kind of I breezed by,
- 40:37Speaker 3: but I kind of talked about in the book where
- 40:39Speaker 3: essentially it's like if you worked at it, like how
- 40:43Speaker 3: chefs be presenting new stuff to add to the menu. Well,
- 40:49Speaker 3: if you work at a Mexican restaurant and you start
- 40:51Speaker 3: getting the itching to make ravioli, eventually you're just not
- 40:57Speaker 3: going to fit in here.
- 41:00Speaker 7: Some of my ideas were pasta, and pasta ain't Mexican,
- 41:05Speaker 7: so you probably should leave and then figure out how
- 41:10Speaker 7: to build your own Italian restaurant. And so I think
- 41:13Speaker 7: that's what a lot of creatives are going to find
- 41:17Speaker 7: themselves dealing. But is that there's things to be learned
- 41:21Speaker 7: in the places where you don't feel completely heard. But
- 41:24Speaker 7: once you feel like you've learned everything that you can
- 41:27Speaker 7: learn and contribute it in every way you possibly can,
- 41:30Speaker 7: then you should consider that lead all of this shit
- 41:34Speaker 7: man like career. It should be in the career and
- 41:37Speaker 7: growth in life. It's just a series of calculated guesses.
- 41:44Speaker 7: It's none of this is linear anymore. The days of
- 41:48Speaker 7: get your degree and then a company hires you, and
- 41:50Speaker 7: then you work till sixty.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Hell now, so you.
- 41:56Speaker 3: Just got to choose your misery. Do you choose the
- 41:59Speaker 3: misery of staying or the misery of the unknown by
- 42:03Speaker 3: taking the lead. Both are uncomfortable and both have their
- 42:07Speaker 3: own set of circumstances because you can be stable and
- 42:11Speaker 3: forever be thinking about what could have been, and that's painful.
- 42:16Speaker 3: And then you could also make the jump and not
- 42:23Speaker 3: know how you're going to pay your bills, and that's
- 42:25Speaker 3: also horrific. But you're alive because you're getting to choose,
- 42:31Speaker 3: you're getting to create. So you know, no, I left,
- 42:35Speaker 3: I didn't know what would be next. But the calculated
- 42:40Speaker 3: guess I made was that if there is ever a
- 42:43Speaker 3: window for a new show to be made about politics
- 42:47Speaker 3: in this country, it will be during an election year.
- 42:52Speaker 3: So if I'm going to leave this show in the
- 42:55Speaker 3: next four years, this is the window. Not mid terms,
- 43:02Speaker 3: not a year from now, not four years, because who
- 43:06Speaker 3: knows what the marketplace is gonna be at that time,
- 43:11Speaker 3: I should leave, and then sure enough, couple, you know,
- 43:16Speaker 3: six seven months later seeing it called. So you know,
- 43:19Speaker 3: I'm very grateful for that. But you know, I was
- 43:23Speaker 3: fully prepared to start ide eighty, start trying to figure
- 43:25Speaker 3: out ways to live skinny, to try and get things done.
- 43:30Speaker 3: But no, in no way was I ever for sure,
- 43:40Speaker 3: In no way was I ever for sure about what
- 43:43Speaker 3: was going to.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Happen when I left Daily show that's real. Yeah, well
- 43:48Speaker 2: I would say thank you.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I mean, I know it was, you know, a jump
- 43:51Speaker 1: for yourself and everything, but I would say thank you
- 43:53Speaker 1: for doing it because this has has allowed you to
- 43:55Speaker 1: speak your own mind. And you know, like you said
- 43:57Speaker 1: you couldn't bring and that's just a really great metaphor
- 44:01Speaker 1: for it, like you can't bring a Chappelle type show
- 44:04Speaker 1: to what you were doing, and.
- 44:05Speaker 2: You wanted to do your own Chappelle, Like I want
- 44:08Speaker 2: to do a.
- 44:08Speaker 3: Lot of different things man Like. In the time since
- 44:11Speaker 3: leaving the show, I've hosted two three during hosted the
- 44:13Speaker 3: Peabody Wards, the MLB Awards, I wrote a book. I've
- 44:16Speaker 3: been in a sitcom. I've been in two movies.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Yep.
- 44:19Speaker 3: That you just literally even off the time front, the timetable.
- 44:24Speaker 2: You don't have time to do all of that.
- 44:26Speaker 3: So I've gotten to explore a million different things. I
- 44:28Speaker 3: dropped a Hulu special, I'm working on a one man's show.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Now I got another, like nonscripted thing I'm trying to
- 44:34Speaker 3: put together for YouTube so I can sit and really
- 44:40Speaker 3: explore all the different types of foods I want to
- 44:43Speaker 3: put in my restaurant. Now, sometimes you have to lead
- 44:46Speaker 3: and make space for that. It's not like all of
- 44:48Speaker 3: this is profitable, but it all is leading towards something
- 44:51Speaker 3: and I trust that instinct.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Man, Roy, Thank you you know so much. I know
- 44:57Speaker 1: you've come out of here. Yeah, we literally I get it.
- 45:01Speaker 1: You know, I got ten fifteen more questions I'd love
- 45:03Speaker 1: to ask you. So we're definitely gonna have to have
- 45:05Speaker 1: you back for sure. Yeah, sometime soon. But you know, please,
- 45:11Speaker 1: for those who don't know, let the internet's out there
- 45:13Speaker 1: know where they can find you at.
- 45:15Speaker 3: Just put an at sign in front of my name,
- 45:17Speaker 3: put a dot com behind it. Let's go at Roy
- 45:20Speaker 3: Virginia everywhere.
