- 0:12Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14It's Wednesday, it's the 3rd of January and here we are to
- 0:19continue reading God's word together.
- 0:22I hope you're going well. If this is a week of holidays
- 0:25for you, then I hope you are getting the chance to put your
- 0:29feet up or get your hands deeply sunk into the dirt or whatever
- 0:34project it is that you are doing.
- 0:36I hope that you have got some time to enjoy doing that.
- 0:41If you are off school, oh that is awesome.
- 0:43You have still got ages to go before you have to get back.
- 0:47And if you are retired, well, what is all this talk of
- 0:50holidays and not holidays? That makes no difference at all.
- 0:53But wherever you are, whatever stage of life you're at, friend,
- 0:56I am just so grateful that you have chosen to take a bit of a
- 1:02moment and let God's Word punctuate the beginning of your
- 1:06year this first week of January. And we are going to continue
- 1:10this story hearing about God's sovereignty.
- 1:13Even when captured in a foreign land, God is still in charge and
- 1:18the only God on the block worth worshipping.
- 1:21And here we we have the story continue where these poor people
- 1:25trying to work out what they do with this hot potato that they
- 1:29have stolen from the Hebrew people and now realize this is
- 1:32not an impotent God that they have dominated, but this is an
- 1:36alive, powerful and independently spirited God that
- 1:39they need to work out. How can they get rid of it so
- 1:43that God doesn't continue to damage their people?
- 1:47So that said, let us empty our minds and hearts and invite in
- 1:53the Holy Spirit to teach us something about the character of
- 1:58God as we read this passage together.
- 2:03Reading First Samuel, chapter 6, the Ark of the Lord remained in
- 2:18Philistine territory seven months in all.
- 2:21Then the Philistines called in their priests and diviners and
- 2:25asked them what should we do about the Ark of the Lord?
- 2:30Tell us how to return it to its own country.
- 2:34Send the Ark of the God of Israel back with a gift, they
- 2:40were told. Send a guilt offering so the
- 2:44plague will stop. Then if you are healed, you will
- 2:48know it was his hand that caused the plague.
- 2:53What sort of a guilt offering should we send?
- 2:55They asked. They were told since the plague
- 2:59has struck, both you and your five rulers make 5 gold tumors
- 3:06and five gold rats, just like those that have ravaged your
- 3:10land. Make these things to show honour
- 3:13to the God of Israel. Perhaps then he will stop
- 3:18afflicting you, your gods and your land.
- 3:22Don't be stubborn and rebellious as Pharaoh and the Egyptians
- 3:26were by the time God was finished with them, they were
- 3:31eager to let Israel go. Now build a new cart and find 2
- 3:37cows that have just given birth to calves.
- 3:41Make sure the cows have never been yoked to a cart.
- 3:45Hitch the cows to the cart, but shut their calves away from them
- 3:50in a pen. Put the Ark of the Lord on the
- 3:53cart and beside it place a chest containing the gold rats and
- 3:59gold tumors you are sending as a guilt offering.
- 4:03Then let the cows go wherever they want.
- 4:08If they cross the border of our land and go to Beth shimmesh, we
- 4:13will know it was the Lord who brought this great disaster upon
- 4:17us. If they don't, we will know.
- 4:20It was not his hand that caused the plague.
- 4:23It came simply by chance. So these instructions were
- 4:29carried out. 2 cows were hitched to the cart and the newborn
- 4:33calves were shut up in a pen. Then the ark of the Lord and the
- 4:38chest containing the gold rats and gold tumors were placed on
- 4:42the cart, and sure enough, without veering off in other
- 4:46directions, the cows went straight along the road toward
- 4:51Beth Shemesh, lowing as they went.
- 4:55The Philistine rulers followed them as far as the border of
- 4:58Beth Shemesh. The people of Beth Shemesh were
- 5:02harvesting wheats in the valley. When they saw the ark, they were
- 5:06overjoyed. The cart came into the field of
- 5:10a man named Joshua and stopped beside a large rock.
- 5:14So the people broke up the wood of the cart for a fire and
- 5:18killed the cows and sacrificed them to the Lord as a burnt
- 5:21offering. Several men of the tribe of Levi
- 5:25lifted the ark of the Lord and the chest containing the gold
- 5:28rats and gold tumors from the cart and placed them on the
- 5:32large rock men. The sacrifices and burnt
- 5:35offerings were offered to the Lord that day by the people of
- 5:38Beth Shemesh. The five Philistine rulers
- 5:42watched all this and then returned to Ekron the same day.
- 5:47The five gold tumors sent by the Philistines as a guilt offering
- 5:51to the Lord were gifts from the rulers of Ashdod, Gaza,
- 5:56Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. The five gold rats represented
- 6:02the five Philistine towns and their surrounding villages,
- 6:06which were controlled by the five rulers.
- 6:09The large rock at Beth Shemesh where they set the ark of the
- 6:12Lord still stands in the field of Joshua as a witness to what
- 6:17happened there. But the Lord killed 70 men from
- 6:23Beth Shemesh because they looked into the ark of the Lord and the
- 6:27people mourned greatly because of what the Lord had done.
- 6:31Who is able to stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy
- 6:36God? They cried out, Where can we
- 6:39send the ark from here? So they sent messengers to the
- 6:43people at Kiriathjiram and told them the Philistines have
- 6:48returned the Ark of the Lord. Come here and get it.
- 7:02Yes, Lord, You are our God, and we love you and worship you and
- 7:08sacrifice all that is important to us, to you.
- 7:14But help us never forget that you are indeed a holy God, so
- 7:20incredibly perfect and powerful that it is only through the gift
- 7:27of the sacrifice of Jesus and His Holiness that we are able to
- 7:31come before you, our incredible holy God.
- 7:37So we recognize you as this perfect, mighty and holy God of
- 7:45ours. And we give you all the
- 7:50reverends we can. We worship you, and we thank you
- 7:56that through Jesus we can come before you without fear and
- 8:01without separation. Thank you for making this way
- 8:05for us, us imperfect people, to be able to be in your presence
- 8:11because of your great love for us.
- 8:15And we pray all of this in His name.
