- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take, where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's. Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes it.
- 0:11All starts. Right now.
- 0:15Welcome back to the three of Tech presented by Sea Kick.
- 0:17This is episode 418. I'll be your host, Kyle Cord,
- 0:20and I'm here with my Co host, Nate Reyes.
- 0:26Nate. What is up, everybody?
- 0:33You wanna know a little secret right now?
- 0:35It's not that much of A secret. Lay it on me.
- 0:38I well. Are you a degenerate gambler
- 0:42too? No, not a degenerate.
- 0:44I do. I do partake in some in some
- 0:46long shot parlays. However, I'm trying to shape up.
- 0:51I get. I get married in nine days,
- 0:53which is Which is insane to say out loud, but your boy is
- 0:59halfway through a four day juice cleanse right now.
- 1:03I haven't had a oh single crumb in 48 hours.
- 1:08It's pretty crazy. Good for you.
- 1:11Yeah, good for you. I feel good.
- 1:16Good for you that's you know that's that's.
- 1:21Dedication. Thank you.
- 1:22That's a clap, lady. Clap, lady.
- 1:28I know how much you love your food, so for you to take two
- 1:31days from that, that's that's big time.
- 1:33It's it's tough. We're only halfway through,
- 1:35baby. I got two more to go.
- 1:39Proud of you. Proud of you.
- 1:40Thanks. I'm also proud of ourselves
- 1:43doing a little. Can you help me make sense of
- 1:46something real quick? Are we calling this a bonus pod
- 1:53because it is this quarter? Opening disc.
- 1:57But is it though? Because the status quo has
- 2:00always been two episodes during the season, and we have played
- 2:06regular season baseball. So is this Is this a bonus pod,
- 2:13or is this just part of our regular schedule?
- 2:15Is it possible for me to say that the regular season has
- 2:18started, but it still hasn't gotten to opening day yet?
- 2:23That's not my opening day. It's not my opening day, but we
- 2:27need to establish whether or not this is a bonus pod.
- 2:31Because honestly, if all of this stuff was Shohei and and eBay
- 2:35and all that hadn't happened, I don't necessarily know that we'd
- 2:37be recording right now. So is this is this the first
- 2:44week of us doing 2 two episodes a week?
- 2:47I guess we're here until I'm not and I'm in the Caribbean.
- 2:54And then I'll be left here to fend for myself.
- 2:57Let's let's get into it. Speaking of international, let's
- 3:01just open up here with with some chat on the Korea series and
- 3:05then we'll get into the show. Hey and Epe and Blake.
- 3:09Snappy Martinez. EPE.
- 3:12Is it not EPE? Is it something else?
- 3:14I. I always thought it was EPE.
- 3:15I keep hearing people say ippy. I don't like that ippy.
- 3:21That doesn't. That doesn't feel right.
- 3:23It's not Ippy. I I know that much.
- 3:25I don't know a lot in this world, but I know it's not ippy.
- 3:29And if it is, I'm. I apologize.
- 3:31First of all, waking up for this series, I think myself and most
- 3:41other baseball fans, us normal people, woke up and caught the
- 3:46game when we caught the game. We're not catching first pitch.
- 3:49No, because we're not a psychopath.
- 3:52So just wanted to get that out there that I was not awake at
- 3:576:00 AM. Although there are a lot.
- 3:59There are a healthy number of people on the East Coast that
- 4:01are awake at six. AMI was not one of those people
- 4:04and regularly I'm not one of those people.
- 4:09So full transparency because that's where all that's what
- 4:12we're all about here on this podcast.
- 4:14I caught both games about halfway through and watched out
- 4:20the finished out the rest of both games, so I had to fill in
- 4:23the gaps after the games had wrapped up, figure out what I
- 4:26missed. But I was not one of those
- 4:30people and I can venture to say, Nate, you being out in Phoenix
- 4:35did not catch the games from. That's your bottom dollar.
- 4:39Your boys not waking up at 3:00 AM ain't happening.
- 4:45So caught the the old story on MLB app I'm not what what for
- 4:53This doesn't count This isn't what is this This is not my
- 4:56opening day I. Will.
- 4:59Never address it as that. I saw a lot of people trying to
- 5:03defend it and and to their credit, look, I'm not sitting
- 5:06here saying Major League Baseball shouldn't be going to
- 5:08these different cities, different countries, all that.
- 5:12Although I think going to London was about as idiotic of a move
- 5:16as they could have done. And they continue to go to
- 5:18London, which is insane because they don't care about baseball
- 5:20there and they never will care about baseball there because
- 5:22they have soccer Korea. I can get down with the Dr.
- 5:26obviously can get down with Japan any of these other
- 5:29countries go for it. But the the argument that these
- 5:34people were trying to make was that well, this isn't about us,
- 5:37this is about the people of Korea.
- 5:39OK. I hear your case, I would
- 5:43understand it a little more if they're playing in front of
- 5:47708090 thousand, even 60,000 people because you know over
- 5:52there in Asia they got, they got some big ballparks, they were
- 5:58playing in front of 15,000 people.
- 6:02So who was this really for? It wasn't even a sell out.
- 6:05So look, I I I think it's great. Again, the the opportunity for
- 6:11some of these guys to immerse themselves in a new culture for
- 6:14a week or so or however long they're over there.
- 6:16Get to play in front of some some new some new fans, maybe
- 6:19some prospective fans, maybe some fans that were on the fence
- 6:21about baseball and like oh let me go check out this Dodge
- 6:23project. I get all that, but let's not.
- 6:26Let's not act like this is for the entire continent of Asia.
- 6:31It felt forced to cause like, remember like the day leading up
- 6:36where they were saying like fans were like lined up at the
- 6:39airport ready to meet all the players and it was like they had
- 6:43lined up the night before. It was like, all right, all
- 6:47right, like we get it. And for it to be such a small
- 6:51venue, for it to not be sold out, I just and whatever, like
- 7:02that's cool, man. Like, Look, you already said it.
- 7:05I'm fine with going overseas. I don't.
- 7:08That's great. Like, spread the game of
- 7:10baseball. I'm not against that.
- 7:12I'm not crazy. Don't start the season this way.
- 7:17Stop doing this. Do it in the middle of the year.
- 7:24Do it right after the All Star break.
- 7:28Well, figure out better ways of doing it.
- 7:31I I understand because this isn't exactly like the
- 7:34aforementioned London trip. This isn't the Dr. which is,
- 7:39correct me if I'm wrong, In the Eastern Time zone or very close
- 7:42to it, it's a little different, So I understand it from that
- 7:45point of view. But there was 111 idea that was
- 7:50proposed, 'cause I had put out, I had put out the, the, the
- 7:54tweet, I guess two days ago, saying how there's something I
- 8:01said There's something fundamentally wrong with playing
- 8:03baseball games that count playing more spring training
- 8:06games and then back to games that count.
- 8:09And then a lot of people are talking about, well, when else
- 8:12are they supposed to do it? And I got to give credit here.
- 8:15I'm just, I'm trying to find the, I'm trying to find the post
- 8:18here, 'cause I want to make sure I give proper credit here.
- 8:24But there was a there was a a plan proposed, and it it made
- 8:31sense. Let me see here.
- 8:43I'll find it. Stand by.
- 8:47I should have had this pulled up.
- 8:48That's on me. I should have, yeah.
- 8:51That's on me. Hey, I didn't think I'd be
- 8:52given. I didn't think I'd be given
- 8:54credit. I'm just here.
- 8:56Where is it? Oh, here we go.
- 8:59OK, shout out James James, H17 on on Twitter, OK, He says.
- 9:09I don't understand why they didn't do this starting on
- 9:12Monday, OK, And just have he said I'll just read the tweet
- 9:16verbatim, he said. I I don't understand why they
- 9:18didn't do this starting on Monday and just have those two
- 9:21play a slightly shorter spring with the day off.
- 9:25The day after opening day. They could have played Monday
- 9:28through Wednesday, had two days off and then a short two game
- 9:31series Saturday and Sunday. And I and I'm thinking through
- 9:37that and I say you know that accounts for the jet lag and all
- 9:39of that. Yeah, if, especially if you do
- 9:42like a getaway game, like a getaway day, right.
- 9:46What time is it? So it was 6:00 AM for you.
- 9:48What time was it locally? I think 7.
- 9:54I would imagine like 7:00 PM. And I'm no travel expert.
- 10:04Is it that much of a difference for like the Cubs and Cardinals
- 10:10to go to London than a West Coast pair of teams to go to
- 10:16Korea? I think so.
- 10:21It is. I'm not a geography guy, but I I
- 10:23I think, yeah, yeah, because Korea's literally unlike the
- 10:27other side of the world. Yeah.
- 10:29But think about going the go the West Coast way, go over the
- 10:33Pacific, but you know. You got to go around a good deal
- 10:37of water or go over a good deal of water to get to Korea.
- 10:42I don't know. Not, not important.
- 10:44You look that up, did you see something that I feel like kind
- 10:51of flew under the radar a little bit The the bomb threat?
- 10:55I did. It was rumored, Rumored.
- 10:56Did you see? That it was specific to Ohtani
- 11:00to. Ohtani, I don't.
- 11:03What was that about? All right, so can I can I just
- 11:07throw something out there? Throw it?
- 11:10Can I? Can I put on my?
- 11:11Squash to to squash the the bet. I'm gonna put on my tinfoil hat
- 11:16here. This came out before we knew
- 11:20about the whole scandal that we're about to get into.
- 11:24Maybe there was some connection. Obviously nothing happened, and
- 11:28they said that there was no threat to those in attendance at
- 11:31the ballpark, so it was fine. And again, nothing happened.
- 11:35The games went off without a hitch.
- 11:37Not an issue. It's in addition to 2000 miles
- 11:42so. Yeah, that's that's that's a
- 11:43good. Raise around the globe to 5900
- 11:46for those wondering, yeah. Literally the Do you think the
- 11:50planet do you? Think eBay was just like, hey,
- 11:56maybe we mix in a little bit of a a.
- 11:59Little bit of a scare. No, no, I'm not putting this on
- 12:03eBay. I'm not putting this on eBay.
- 12:05I just think it's interesting that all of this happened.
- 12:08Within When was the bomb threat? It was before game.
- 12:12What day? Well, I Thursday.
- 12:16What day? Tuesday.
- 12:20Yeah. Or did the report come out the
- 12:22morning of the game? Because you have to remember
- 12:26they're when they finish up their game, they're basically in
- 12:31tomorrow. Like when they finish up a night
- 12:36game, they go home, go to bed, and then within hours it's the
- 12:38next day. So there's a lot of play here, a
- 12:41lot of a lot of confusion. Yeah.
- 12:44I don't know why we're trying to dive into time zones and
- 12:49distance traveled, distance traveled and all that right now,
- 12:52but there's a lot at play here. Let's talk.
- 12:56Let's talk a little baseball about it.
- 12:57Let's talk a little baseball. You know, this is a baseball
- 13:00podcast. Let's let's dive into it.
- 13:02So game one, a fairly, fairly normal game.
- 13:07Nothing crazy. 5/2 in favor of the Dodgers, as I'm sure you
- 13:11know it by this point. A couple takeaways.
- 13:16Obviously you had that Jake Cronenworth error, which I don't
- 13:19know if you saw, but apparently. I'd hate to call that an error.
- 13:24I. I really would.
- 13:26It's not an error in my books, but it's not my books that
- 13:28they're keeping. So what good does that do?
- 13:31But Mad Dog, I don't know if you saw that, but he's.
- 13:35Pissed. He was like that.
- 13:37Corona War's got to make that play.
- 13:38He's like, well, he did in theory.
- 13:43Also, it's it's March. How much?
- 13:47How much of A beating has that web taken already, you know?
- 13:53Maybe there's some carryover. Maybe he's, maybe he's hung onto
- 13:56that glove for a while. I'm not.
- 13:58We can assume it's new. Or the groan zone.
- 14:02Yeah, I put that tweet out. I couldn't help but think of Don
- 14:05Orsillo when he's like, you can hit it anywhere, but don't hit
- 14:07it to the groan zone. And I said, well, he literally
- 14:10hit it into his glove and it didn't matter.
- 14:12So yeah, it's tough. Yeah, that's real tough.
- 14:15One of the one of the things I did like to see and I put out
- 14:18this tweet the other day and I know that you saw it because you
- 14:20liked it, but it was I put out just a a little screenshot of my
- 14:24notes app. I just said players that I
- 14:26believe in didn't add really any context to it.
- 14:29I just wanted to get it out on the record so that so that when
- 14:32these guys inevitably have a year, I can go back and
- 14:34reference this tweet. Sure.
- 14:36Hassan Kim was on that list. I'm a Hassan Kim Believer and.
- 14:41As am I the. The reception that this dude
- 14:43got? Big time.
- 14:46Loved it, man. Loved it.
- 14:48The signs were, yeah. For like a good chunk like,
- 14:54yeah, it was like 7-8 years, wasn't it?
- 14:57Yeah, the the signs were all over for him.
- 15:03I mean, obviously you had people there to see Shohei and I even
- 15:06saw Mookie was making the rounds.
- 15:07But surprising. Well, I guess not surprising for
- 15:12him and and Korea but to me at least quite a quite a reception.
- 15:18Quite a turn out for for Mr. Kim.
- 15:23Yeah. So really not much to write home
- 15:24about in game one. Padres pitching not efficient.
- 15:30They walked nine and then immediately after game one you
- 15:35have the tweets coming out being like the the Dodgers are on pace
- 15:38for 162 and O. It's still on the table.
- 15:41I'm like, OK, are we are we really gonna do this all season?
- 15:44Because I think the answer is yes.
- 15:46Although it didn't matter because literally game two we
- 15:49put an end to that real quick. And game two, I might add,
- 15:53quite, quite a high scoring affair, if I do say so myself.
- 16:021511, it was big. It it gave me Red Sox, Yankees,
- 16:07London vibes where I'm like. Do you remember?
- 16:11I looked it up today, it was like 17 to 13 or something like
- 16:18that. Absurd.
- 16:21But I I was thinking I was like oh, did we like, forget to put
- 16:24the the special balls in play for game one?
- 16:27We. Got a We got a little.
- 16:30We had a Little Mix up there with the buckets, little boxes,
- 16:33balls maybe Lost in Lost in Translation Game 2, not the case
- 16:4115 to 11. My guy Mookie with the want to
- 16:47make sure I'm correct on this first Homer of the year and all
- 16:50of baseball. Put up 17 points for me in
- 16:54fantasy today. By the way, I think he said six.
- 16:58RB is so big day for Mookie. A couple swipes too.
- 17:03Not so much of a great day for Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
- 17:10Nailed that, by the way. I haven't heard you say that
- 17:13whole name. Thank you on the pod yet, so
- 17:17great job there First off. Well, I I am working on my on my
- 17:23foreign language skills 'cause I am applying to be Shohei Otani's
- 17:29new translator. Not a bad idea.
- 17:31You're not a big betting guy, so it's probably probably the first
- 17:35question in the interview. You know, do you use DraftKings?
- 17:41Have you ever used DraftKings? My answer would say, or my
- 17:44answer would be yes in college. Actually, no, I I'm not allowed
- 17:48to say that. That never happened.
- 17:49I didn't use it in college as a college athlete.
- 17:52Never happened. It was a joke.
- 17:54Of course, that's a hypothetical.
- 17:56Hypothetically, we'll say that I use in College in an effort to
- 18:00get a few bucks to get like a sandwich, because, as you know,
- 18:04you're broke in college. Yeah, you gotta you gotta do
- 18:06what you can. That record's been expunged, I
- 18:09retract. Everything.
- 18:11I plead the 5th. Yeah, I Yamamoto looked like
- 18:17like like crap. Just say it.
- 18:20He was. He looked.
- 18:21He was booty meat. It was booty meat.
- 18:23It was cheap. Bad for for a lot of what we've
- 18:29seen him in a Dodger uniform. I is there.
- 18:33There's still like the difference of the baseballs.
- 18:36Yeah, because like Japanese baseballs, they have a little
- 18:39more tackiness. They kind of just show up at the
- 18:44ballpark, like pre rubbed up pre tacky, whereas ours are pearls.
- 18:52And then they have like that special mud that a clubby was,
- 18:55you know, going to rub up a ball before a game.
- 18:57Sure. Can we is that enough?
- 19:03Is that enough to say like he's not used to it yet?
- 19:09Well, there was I I don't know if it was a baseball.
- 19:12I saw a lot of speculation as to whether or not the Dodgers were
- 19:17distracted in game two based on the findings after game one.
- 19:24And I thought, I don't know if that's exactly the reason that
- 19:28Yamamoto have a five spot after getting he got.
- 19:34He got hit around a little bit this spring before they made the
- 19:37long. Would you say 5900?
- 19:40Yes, 5900 miles 5. 93 flying right?
- 19:44To Korea so. 5953I. Don't know man.
- 19:53Yeah, I don't know dude. It's just he doesn't.
- 19:56If there's then guys that know pitching can can be aware of
- 20:01this. Like if if you have one miss.
- 20:04In a start, if you have like a glove side miss or an arm side
- 20:08miss or one of your pitches is not being spotted like that,
- 20:14that is like a, a mechanical thing, right?
- 20:18He's spraying it. He was all over the place
- 20:22everywhere, spiking a lot of different stuff.
- 20:25It's just I I'm, I think he's fine.
- 20:29Yeah, I'm with. You.
- 20:30I'm not. You said.
- 20:31He'll figure it out. He'll be fine.
- 20:33He will be fine. There's always that adjustment
- 20:36period and I do go back to like this.
- 20:38I think it's a slightly bigger ball for us and it is, it does
- 20:42have that like different tackiness over there in Japan,
- 20:47so. I will say though, there is a
- 20:50sickening amount of people rooting for this kids downfall.
- 20:54Oh yeah, sickening amount. He just.
- 20:56I mean, there's there's enough people that hate the Dodgers.
- 20:58There's enough people that think it's ridiculous for him to get
- 21:01300 before ever throwing. Yeah, I get that too.
- 21:06But I I I don't know. Like I I wanna.
- 21:09I root for good baseball. I don't have really anything
- 21:12against the Dodgers. Well, let me ask you this, I, I
- 21:16I saw this floating around on social the other day and I
- 21:18thought it was it made for an interesting consideration.
- 21:24Obviously if you're a rational, thinking human being, you're not
- 21:30gonna root for an injury. Sure, but I I as I mentioned, I
- 21:35saw this post floating around and it was talking about how
- 21:39again, not gonna root for injury, but rooting for a guy
- 21:44who you think is way overpaid, maybe showing a little bit of
- 21:51giddiness after he gets beat up, gets rocked around a little bit
- 21:56after a few outings, is are are you willing to go that far?
- 22:01If there will be like a ghost IL stint after four or five starts
- 22:07like this, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, that'll for sure come
- 22:13into play. I mean, if Garrett, I'll just
- 22:16put it like this, if Garrett Cole got the contract he got
- 22:19back in the day and it turned out to be not as good as we
- 22:24thought he would be and eventually would go on to be, I
- 22:29would absolutely be pulling for his downfall.
- 22:32Performance wise, I would never wear for an injury, of course.
- 22:35So from that point of view, I get it if you're like a Giants
- 22:39fan or even a Padres fan, but I'm also like, what is this guy?
- 22:44What is it? What is this kid really done to
- 22:46deserve the hate? I don't understand it.
- 22:49I don't understand it. I.
- 22:50Don't know either. And you know, as good as
- 22:54Japanese hitters are, they're not as good as Major League
- 23:00Baseball player hitters. So I am going to go ahead and
- 23:04say that there's just gonna be an adjustment period.
- 23:07I think it's OK. I don't think there's anything
- 23:09wrong. I don't think Dodgers fans need
- 23:11to overreact. I don't think we need to like,
- 23:14think that this guy's done like he has plenty of time to settle
- 23:18in. He's young and I'm not stressed.
- 23:21It's fine. I'm with you.
- 23:25For the record, Joe Musgrove didn't have all that great of a
- 23:28day either. Gave up five, five runs, seven
- 23:30hits, two walks, and two and 2/3.
- 23:32So pitching was certainly lacking in Game 2.
- 23:36Also, we've seen this. We've seen this, this This is a
- 23:40tale as old as time. Hitters are now ahead of
- 23:46pitchers, right? Like it's flipped.
- 23:49We used to have this like we used to have this.
- 23:52Hitters need a while to get timing.
- 23:55Pitchers have the upper hand for the first few weeks out of the
- 23:59out of the gates. It's now flipped because of the
- 24:03way pitchers are being handled nowadays, how limited pitch
- 24:06counts are now with pitch clock being involved, like now you
- 24:12have some guys reporting late like we're babying pitchers so
- 24:16much that they're going to. It's now flipped.
- 24:22Hitters have the upper hand right now.
- 24:24I think you're going to see some high scoring games a lot for the
- 24:27first few weeks. I don't think that's relative to
- 24:30whatever stadium they were playing in in in Seoul.
- 24:36It's a great point Nate. It's a great point.
- 24:41Let's let's switch gears here. Let's talk.
- 24:45We already alluded to it. The topic that is making its way
- 24:49around the baseball world and honestly just the world in
- 24:55general. A lot of takes flying on A1
- 25:00show. Hey Otani, but let's let's dive
- 25:02into it shall we? So I'll be honest, there is a
- 25:07lot, as I said, flying around about this, but I still don't
- 25:14know if I fully grasped what exactly is going on.
- 25:19I don't think any of us know. Because this report came out
- 25:23from ESPN, which we'll we'll look at a little more in depth
- 25:27here, but this thing comes out, we start getting the the alert
- 25:34notifications and then the tweets start rolling out and
- 25:38then the YouTube response videos start showing out or showing up.
- 25:46I I don't, I don't understand fully and as you mentioned, I'm
- 25:51not I'm not exactly a betting man.
- 25:55So even even the motivations behind what's being described
- 26:00and what's being reported on, I'm not fully comprehending.
- 26:04OK. Like I I don't I don't know
- 26:09who's if what's being reported is accurate and factual, which
- 26:14it sounds like it might not because there's a lot of stories
- 26:16being flipped here. But with what we have as of
- 26:20right now, if if that's being reported as factual, I don't
- 26:23really know who's supposed to be the fall guy who's potentially
- 26:28behind a cover up because I just don't fully understand the
- 26:31motivations here. And quite frankly, I'm a little
- 26:37scared to peel back the curtain here because.
- 26:41I think a lot of people are. This could be.
- 26:43I mean, I look, let's just call it like we're seeing it.
- 26:47You're seeing things like black socks thrown out.
- 26:50You're seeing Pete Rose thrown out.
- 26:53Oh, Pete. Is coming out.
- 26:55He's coming out soon, for sure. You're seeing steroid era
- 26:59comparisons being made in terms of the black mark.
- 27:03That's potentially gonna hit that.
- 27:05That's potentially going to hit baseball.
- 27:10And I was thinking back on this, this Astro scandal a a few years
- 27:15back and I thought, I don't, I don't remember how quickly that
- 27:22unraveled. Because I remember I could take
- 27:24you to the exact spot that I was standing when I got that
- 27:27notification that the where the floodgates just opened up and
- 27:30everything, everything broke loose.
- 27:35But with this, it's like, have we even scratched the surface?
- 27:40Probably not like I'm for Shohei's sake.
- 27:47I'm kind of terrified for what we're potentially going to be
- 27:52finding out because Jeff Passan said it today.
- 27:54He's been, he's been making his rounds with his follow up
- 27:58reporting and all that, but he's like there will be an
- 28:02investigation, there will be more to uncover here and there
- 28:06will be ramifications that we don't even know about yet that
- 28:14will take place. So it's a it's a it's a jarring
- 28:20situation. I'd never thought when we did
- 28:23last episode, when we did our Hot Takes predictions episode,
- 28:26and we did this whole tinfoil award of who we thought would be
- 28:30most likely to get swept up in a conspiracy the same week that
- 28:36the episode drops. Nobody had a Tony on that bingo
- 28:40card. We have the greatest player in
- 28:43baseball, many would say of all time, caught up in a 4 1/2 +
- 28:521,000,000 dollar gambling scandal.
- 28:57Two technically a game into the season.
- 29:02That's where we're at right now, and I hate it.
- 29:07I mean, it's selfishly, it's so weird.
- 29:11Selfishly, it's great for content, but for baseball, it's
- 29:14it's not great. This isn't the kind of attention
- 29:16you want for baseball. Do you wanna?
- 29:20Should we? Should we look at this article
- 29:24here? We should.
- 29:27We shall. We shall, we should.
- 29:29So there was the the report in in what am I trying to say here
- 29:37words the reporting question. The report that we're
- 29:40referencing here came out yesterday.
- 29:42There was a follow up by the same reporter, Tisha Thompson,
- 29:47but the the article that came out yesterday, March 20th at
- 29:505:50 Eastern. Let's just let's take a look at
- 29:56this real quick because again, this is, in terms of black and
- 30:02white, limited speculation. This is really all we have.
- 30:07This is the most Gray thing I've ever seen.
- 30:11Well, no, no. What what you're seeing floating
- 30:14around on social media that's that's Gray.
- 30:17That's the speculation. This is as concrete of
- 30:23information as we have available to us right now is what I'm
- 30:26saying. Would you not, would you agree
- 30:29because that's this is what everything this is what
- 30:32everything has stemmed from and then as I mentioned the
- 30:35occasional follow up from passing and all that.
- 30:37But as of right now, let's see, let's see what we have, Tisha
- 30:42writes. Ipe Mizahara, the longtime
- 30:46friend and interpreter interpreter for Ohtani,
- 30:48interrupted or incurred the gambling debts to a Southern
- 30:52California bookmaking operation that is under federal
- 30:56investigation, multiple sources told ESPN.
- 30:58For those who don't know illegal bookmaking, this is a this is a
- 31:04bookie. This is not legal.
- 31:06Continue. OK, let's go.
- 31:09Gambling entity. This isn't a FanDuel.
- 31:12This isn't a DraftKings. This is illegal, which is not
- 31:16permitted in Major League Baseball.
- 31:19Gambling is allowed. Not on your own sport, but it
- 31:25has to be with a legal entity. She goes on to write how he came
- 31:31to lose his job. Started with reporters asking
- 31:34questions about the wire transfers.
- 31:36I I did skim past the opening paragraph that mentions that it
- 31:40was four and a half $1,000,000 in in wire transfers.
- 31:43So not a small amount of money and isn't four and a with with
- 31:49the deferments isn't four and a half million what Ohtani's
- 31:53making over the next like decade?
- 31:56So I mean, Ohtani's out for his the next decade worth of salary.
- 32:02That's that's, oh that's, oh, a single month of a New Balance
- 32:05paycheck. That's fair, That's fair, says
- 32:11Initially. A spokesman for Ohtani told ESPN
- 32:14the slugger had transferred the funds to cover Mizahara's
- 32:16gambling debt. The spokesman presented Mizahara
- 32:19to ESPN for a 90 minute interview Tuesday night, during
- 32:22which Mizahara laid out his account in great detail.
- 32:26However, as ESPN published a prepared to publish the story
- 32:30Wednesday, the spokesman disavowed Muzahara's account and
- 32:33said Ohtani's lawyers would issue a statement to which and
- 32:37this isn't exactly what you said, but they basically came
- 32:39out and said, no, just kidding, this was theft.
- 32:43Yeah. So I mean there was a lot more
- 32:48to it and maybe we'll we'll dabble back in, back into it.
- 32:51But just taking a brief pause here, a possible scenario that
- 32:58we have right now is that Shohei feels bad for his friend.
- 33:04A friend for which he's had many years.
- 33:07A good friend. Some would say best friend.
- 33:10Some would say best friend. I saw a quote floating around
- 33:13from Ibei. I I want to say it was maybe
- 33:16from the offseason or last year That was him saying that he's
- 33:22around Shohei. I think, I think the quote was
- 33:25something like that. He's around Shohei more than
- 33:27he's around his family because he's around Shohei like 365 days
- 33:31a year. So again, getting back to the
- 33:36scenario, it's possible that Shohei felt bad for his friend
- 33:41paid the debts. Major League Baseball goes woah,
- 33:45woah, woah after some more information comes out and then
- 33:52Ohtani's team in order to protect their Golden Boy.
- 33:58Baseball's Golden Boy, they said, just kidding.
- 34:01We didn't mean any of that. We were robbed.
- 34:10That's that's that's kind of what what we have right now.
- 34:13There is a lot, there's a lot more conspiracies.
- 34:16Oh, boy. He's getting his tinfoil hat.
- 34:18He brought it, didn't he? I know this man.
- 34:22I know this man. For those who don't know, I've.
- 34:27I've known we were neighbors when we were, like 3.
- 34:32So we've known each other for just about our entire lives.
- 34:34The fact that I knew he had a roll of tinfoil and he was
- 34:37getting his tinfoil hat, it shouldn't come as a surprise.
- 34:41As a surprise to those of you. Buckle up, everyone.
- 34:44What do you got for us? The article goes on to say hold.
- 34:52On, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 34:53Before you got that, we got a question from the chat, Jacob
- 34:56says. Or Jacob asks, would you guys
- 34:59bail each other out for four and a half million dollars?
- 35:02How close are Nate and Kyle? No.
- 35:10I don't. I don't know where you.
- 35:11I don't know what kind of operation you think we're
- 35:13running here at the three O take.
- 35:14But I relax, Jacob. I can give you 4 1/2 dollars.
- 35:19Four and a half dollars, 4.5 dollars.
- 35:22I couldn't. I could combine what the three O
- 35:26take is pulling in as well as my own personal money and I could
- 35:30maybe match half of what Nate's given you I I could maybe go
- 35:36like. 225-270-5275, the article goes on to say because of I I
- 35:48think, I think it it pay IPA, IPA.
- 35:53IPA, I'm just gonna say. IPA.
- 35:55I think IPA went rogue. I think IPA was like, yo, this
- 36:05doesn't look good. I got you and Shohei's like, I
- 36:14don't know what that what that means.
- 36:17Next thing you know he's sitting down for a 90 minute interview.
- 36:21Homie logs into his bank account and just like, shows stuff.
- 36:26The article goes on to say ESPN had reviewed the bank
- 36:31information showing Ohtani's name on two $500,000 payments
- 36:37sent in September and October to the bookkeeper.
- 36:44With his name. Show his name on it.
- 36:48What? No, I have not been a fan of
- 36:59IPE. Personally, I felt the guy was
- 37:02just too much in the spotlight As an interpreter.
- 37:06I shouldn't know your name. I don't know any other
- 37:10interpreter's name. I don't care if you're hanging
- 37:14out with Ohtani. I don't know you.
- 37:17I don't want to know you. You're not anybody.
- 37:19To me, this is the best baseball player on the planet.
- 37:24You can just stay in the shadows.
- 37:28I didn't like that baseball card, the rare trio of baseball
- 37:33cards that came out where it was Ohtani versus Trout in the WBC.
- 37:40And IPE is holding one of them. Which side note?
- 37:43Happy one year anniversary? I think I saw today that today
- 37:46is one year anniversary that game.
- 37:48What a what? An awesome What?
- 37:51The tournament. Kind of ironic if you think
- 37:53about. It kind of.
- 37:54Kind of. Kind of.
- 37:55Kind of. Yeah, a year to the date.
- 37:56Wow. Anyway.
- 37:57For him to be standing there. Like what?
- 38:00What are you doing? Why are you a part of this?
- 38:03Why are you in this shot? I didn't like it.
- 38:10But how? The turntables.
- 38:12How the turntables? Ipe's falling on a sword.
- 38:20Do you think Ohtani's the degenerate?
- 38:23IPE is falling on a sword? Then Here's why for anybody that
- 38:28doesn't bet and doesn't get this 0% chance any bookie is letting
- 38:39you go in the hole for 4 1/2 milli. 0% chance you have that
- 38:45kind of line of credit. I don't even know what an
- 38:52interpreter makes. Let's go.
- 38:54I mean, give him six figures. We'd give him a couple 100,000
- 38:57for a salary. This is a semi relevant detail,
- 39:00let's see. It's got to.
- 39:02Be Let's see what he makes. Ipe Mizzahara This was from oh
- 39:09this was from 9 hours ago. CBS News Ipe Mizzahara, 39, who
- 39:14has been standing alongside Ohtani for the entirety of of
- 39:16the 29 year old phenom six years in the MLB, was paid up to half,
- 39:21$1,000,000 a year to serve as an English translator for the
- 39:24native Japanese speaker before being fired.
- 39:27It's an absurd, absurd salary. First off, 5. 100K.
- 39:32Doing something that Google could do, you're just.
- 39:34Talking. Anyway, that's insane.
- 39:39There's no way. I don't care, I say that.
- 39:42I say that and I know like 2 sentences in Spanish, so credit
- 39:46to ipe for number multiple. El bano por vivor the.
- 39:51Necesito necesito IR a la Playa con MI baseball E Pedro.
- 40:06That's I need to go to the beach with my baseball and my dog.
- 40:11You're welcome. Perfect.
- 40:13Anyway, continue. Sorry, continue.
- 40:16It pays falling on the sword. It pays me right now.
- 40:21So I'm understanding you and saying that you think Ohtani's
- 40:23the degenerate here. I do.
- 40:25Wow, the man. And I tweeted this yesterday.
- 40:29You're telling me the man that has a montage on YouTube of him
- 40:35doing nothing but picking up trash around Major League
- 40:38Baseball stadiums is the degenerate?
- 40:43I do. I do.
- 40:46I don't buy it. I don't believe it.
- 40:49This man. This man has secrets.
- 40:51We didn't even know he was engaged.
- 40:53Next thing you know, he's married.
- 40:55He got what? Did he not get married this
- 40:57year? I keep seeing people.
- 40:59No, no, no, I I keep seeing people Be like he played for the
- 41:03angels for what? How however many years he was
- 41:07with the Angels, like 6, he's like he played with the Angels
- 41:11and didn't know a thing about this guy.
- 41:13And then he comes over to the to the Dodgers and we find out he
- 41:16has a wife. And I'm like, OK, well, maybe
- 41:19that's because he wasn't married then.
- 41:21Because they're we didn't even know newly married.
- 41:24So that's what do you even know he's engaged.
- 41:25We didn't even know. That's it.
- 41:28So what? Who cares?
- 41:29These are secrets. Good for this man.
- 41:33I know. No, no, no.
- 41:34I know you and I and I just know if we would have found out,
- 41:39let's just say his engagement lasted a year, traditional
- 41:42timetable, if if it would have come out last offseason that
- 41:51Shohei Ohtani was engaged and it was all that we talked about.
- 41:56For I would have hated it. He would have.
- 41:58Hated it for sure. So can we not give the guy some
- 42:01slack for maybe not going all crazy public with the OR public
- 42:05at all with the engagement information?
- 42:07I don't know. I'm engaged.
- 42:09I was pretty happy to tell people.
- 42:13It's just weird, that's all I'm saying.
- 42:15That that's. I'll give you that.
- 42:16It's weird. But I'm not gonna knock the guy.
- 42:18It's weird. I think they're secrets.
- 42:21I think they're secrets. I think it pays.
- 42:25Falling on the sword, dawg. Here's why.
- 42:28So so yeah, run with this, explain to me because narrative
- 42:32that you have in your mind. He goes to ESPN.
- 42:34He has this conversation, says hey, look like it's me, I'm the
- 42:40one doing it here's. My.
- 42:41Account. Yeah, here's my account super
- 42:45open. Who does that?
- 42:47Nobody does that. Nobody with that kind of debt is
- 42:49like, here, here's my debt and shows it to an ESPN reporter.
- 42:52This is insane. And then all the sudden Otani's
- 42:59lawyers are like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 43:01Otani's name is on that stuff. Dude lies.
- 43:05All he said was lies. Everything he just said is not
- 43:08correct. If he's like, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 43:10you're right. 24 hours later, he's like, yeah, yeah, that.
- 43:12None of that was right. You're right.
- 43:13My bad, my bad. Shohei had no idea.
- 43:17How do you tell me in on Tuesday that Shohei knew gave you money
- 43:24to bail you out and then Wednesday you said Joey had no
- 43:28idea and now it's theft. Not to mention not to mention
- 43:35the clips of them inter interacting in the dugout during
- 43:39game I guess. Yeah, game one and the the the
- 43:44comments were like, this doesn't appear to be a video of two
- 43:50people who are at odds right now because they were interacting
- 43:53just fine. And maybe that was upfront, I
- 43:56don't know. But just a lot of weird.
- 44:00And then the. The shift to theft was the thing
- 44:03that got me. I'm like shift.
- 44:04To theft. Whoa, whoa.
- 44:05You don't have your story straight.
- 44:08Like, it's one thing if we go like E Pay was responsible for
- 44:12this gambling debt to then go whoa, whoa, whoa, it was
- 44:16actually Ohtani who was responsible for this debt.
- 44:19We need to launch an investigation.
- 44:21Yeah, but to go from, hey, this was just a a guy paying off his
- 44:26friend's debt to make sure he didn't do it again and just do
- 44:29him a solid to this guy robbed me.
- 44:32Yeah. Then for then, what are we
- 44:35doing? This is where the hat the hat's
- 44:37coming in soon. OK, what do you got?
- 44:40Then for the update to come from me, come to me on Bleacher
- 44:43Report at 4:08 Pacific Time today.
- 44:48As Ohtani's reps tried to determine what happened, they
- 44:52initially relied on EPA's translation.
- 44:56So now we're gonna say it's a lost in translation situation.
- 45:01What? You're telling me Shohei's
- 45:04lawyers don't speak Japanese? You're telling me Shohei's
- 45:07lawyers aren't able to speak directly?
- 45:10Ipei's the only one that can translate Ohtani's words.
- 45:14What are you talking about? So we went from ipei, spilling
- 45:19the beans. ESP NS like let's ride.
- 45:22We're releasing this puppy, reversing it, saying Nope.
- 45:29Uh huh. All of that was a lie.
- 45:31Lawyers come in. Block this, block this.
- 45:34Now it's lost in translation. All in the middle of this.
- 45:39ML BS like Otani's fine. What do we We're not
- 45:43investigating this. And I I tweeted that out that I
- 45:47said That was the most predictable headline of all
- 45:49time. Major League Baseball.
- 45:52Where you think Robbie Manfred is looking into OTAN?
- 45:57This is the if we remove stats and skill set, we can argue that
- 46:05this is probably the most popular baseball player of all
- 46:09time since Babe Ruth. And even then, Babe Ruth
- 46:13probably didn't reach this legendary status with his name
- 46:18until after he was done playing. And it's not even his fault.
- 46:22It's just because the media that exists today didn't exist in
- 46:25newspapers. It's not even his fault.
- 46:27When we're talking about like the arguably one of the biggest
- 46:31international stars, I would say we have like Christian
- 46:34Christianado, Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Otani's on his way up.
- 46:40Otani's in that category as far as, like, I don't even watch
- 46:43your sport, but I know who you are.
- 46:47So sit here and say Robbie Manfred, because that's what the
- 46:50punishment is. If you get caught betting,
- 46:57you're under investigation by your own commissioner, Robbie
- 47:02Manfred's sweeping this puppy under the rug.
- 47:04Robbie Manfred went to the Dodgers, the Dodgers went to IPA
- 47:09said. Hey, you're taking this, You're
- 47:14taking this fall. I'm sorry.
- 47:21It's not even Ohtani's call. It's not even Ohtani trying to
- 47:25clean up his own mess. Oh, I guarantee you for what's
- 47:30the legal term? Plausible deniability.
- 47:34No chance. Shohei is even within a mile
- 47:37radius of the building that these conversations are are
- 47:40taking place with. With IPE.
- 47:42Not a shot. Correct, they say.
- 47:44Hey, go. You know what?
- 47:49Here's 10 grand. Go, enjoy, Go enjoy a nice, nice
- 47:52night out on the town with the new wife.
- 47:55Just blow it all. Paint the town blue.
- 48:00Honest. And you're telling me that IPE
- 48:03broke the news to the LA Dodgers in the clubhouse?
- 48:07Who is IPE? Who are you?
- 48:10Who are you? You're a translator.
- 48:13Why are you addressing what? What are you talking about?
- 48:18The whole I I'm, I'm kind of with you on the falling on the
- 48:22sword angle and it's not Even so much it's it's not so much about
- 48:29looking at who's responsible. It's more about the the response
- 48:34for me. When you look at what he said,
- 48:37it's just a dead giveaway. He said obviously he mean you
- 48:43know Tani wasn't happy about it and said he would help me out to
- 48:45make sure I never do this again. He decided to pay it off for me.
- 48:48I want everyone to know Shohei had zero involvement in betting.
- 48:52I want people to know I did not know this was illegal.
- 48:55I learned my lesson the hard way.
- 48:56I will never do sports betting ever again.
- 49:00No shot. You didn't know this was
- 49:02illegal. Whoever it was, Ohtani, Ipe, I
- 49:06don't care. No shot.
- 49:08You didn't know this was illegal.
- 49:10And for you to use absolutes like that, that's it.
- 49:13If we've learned anything, forget the legal world.
- 49:16If we've learned anything from from people under the radar or
- 49:21under the microscope in baseball, you think Mark
- 49:24McGuire, guys like that who've been caught up in things, when
- 49:28they when they start using absolutes like that, that's when
- 49:33you know something. Something and for him to say,
- 49:36yeah, I want people to something did not know this was illegal.
- 49:39I would never do sports betting ever again now.
- 49:42This isn't you've you've been in California for years, Years.
- 49:51And what makes you think that, like Ohtani would be OK with
- 49:58saying I'm at my status and my translator's getting into some
- 50:05of the biggest possible gambling holes, and I'm not gonna put an
- 50:11end to that. My lawyers aren't gonna put an
- 50:13end to that. You live in California.
- 50:16It's not legal there. You know what's going on?
- 50:20Bets outside of baseball. I don't know about that.
- 50:26I can't comment on that. I don't know.
- 50:28I don't really care. I don't think it matters so
- 50:30much. When I heard that, and I'm I'm
- 50:33really not trying to speculate, even though I know this, we're
- 50:36ultimately only speculating, 'cause we don't, we have barely
- 50:39anything to go off of. But this is obviously a big
- 50:41deal. It needs to be talked about.
- 50:43When I saw the bit about, it was international soccer there.
- 50:50There's a couple other sports. That, yeah, it says
- 50:52international soccer and other sports.
- 50:54Hyphen but not. Baseball that to me that seems
- 50:59like an opportunity for the guilty party.
- 51:03You fill in the blank with, if you're listening, whatever party
- 51:06you want to believe is at fault here and and their corresponding
- 51:11camp. To me, that seemed like an
- 51:14opportunity to go well, maybe this is 1 area where we can save
- 51:18face. Like we're kind of out in the
- 51:20open here with the amount of money that's been made public,
- 51:24the people that are involved. But at the very least we can
- 51:27say, well, we didn't, we didn't get him on baseball to maybe
- 51:32soften the blow a little bit. I don't think it helps, but
- 51:35maybe that's what their thought process was and.
- 51:37You're telling me that Shohei isn't smart enough to go to one
- 51:40of his attorneys, one of his agents, one of his managers, and
- 51:44say Homie's got a pretty big debt?
- 51:48I think I'm gonna pay it for him.
- 51:50I think I'm just gonna send money right to the guy.
- 51:54There's no one there to say, hey, there's no financial
- 51:57manager to say, hey, actually that's illegal.
- 52:01I don't think we should have your name anywhere near this.
- 52:04So to sit here and say I wanted to give the money to to the
- 52:09bookkeeper to make sure Ipe learned his lesson and wouldn't
- 52:12bet anymore. Nice try.
- 52:16Can I ask you, can I ask you something as as someone who has
- 52:20been known to, to put down a dollar or two?
- 52:24Yeah, I'm not a big bettber, by the way.
- 52:26I've never bet more than 20 bucks on anything.
- 52:28On legal on legal platforms, I might add yes.
- 52:35Answer me this if you can. The I think the the the part,
- 52:40the detail that I'm getting hung up on is differentiating between
- 52:45the active gambling, like proactively gambling, putting
- 52:51down money ahead of time ahead of an event, whether it be
- 52:55baseball, what other, whatever other sporting event, and then
- 52:58paying off those debts to a bookie.
- 53:02Like, do those carry the same weight in terms of legality or
- 53:08lack thereof or? Well a a bookie is not upfront
- 53:12money whereas FanDuel is right. FanDuel, DraftKings.
- 53:17You have the money in your account, You place that, you go
- 53:21to the horse track. You give money on placing his
- 53:24bet. Right.
- 53:25Bookies. No.
- 53:27Bookies typically will have like because they have a pool of
- 53:30people betting they're gonna say, I take this bet, I take
- 53:33this bet. Bookies set the odds the same
- 53:36way fans sure picks odds, right. So bookies setting odds and all
- 53:40these people are giving them money and say, OK, these odds
- 53:42are changing now because like I'm gonna be in the hole if I
- 53:45continue to have these great of odds.
- 53:47So odds change. Typically all this money comes
- 53:50in and then on Fridays they're gonna say, all right, I'm gonna
- 53:54pay out the winners, losers, you owe me this, right.
- 53:57So that's where, like the money isn't given up front, the way
- 54:02our typical betting is that we're all familiar with.
- 54:07Yeah, that makes sense. What's?
- 54:08Fishy about this. How do you continue to get up to
- 54:11four and a half million dollars? Like, but that's what I'm trying
- 54:15to figure out. Let's just say that the the
- 54:17scenario that's or one of the hypothetical scenarios that's
- 54:22floating around out there is is reality is what actually
- 54:25happened. Let's just say the IPE was the
- 54:29one responsible for these bets. And then let's just say Ohtani
- 54:34didn't know that he was in this deep.
- 54:36And let's just say Ohtani wanted to do his friend a solid.
- 54:42Who in the eyes of the law is more at fault here?
- 54:48Or who? Like who's going to receive the
- 54:50greater degree of punishment? Is it Ibe who proactively put
- 54:53these bets down or is it Shohei who?
- 54:56Who has? What did we say to documented at
- 55:00least wire transfers of five? What was it, $500,000?
- 55:06I don't know. Like if you don't know, because
- 55:09like, wire, even money, that's still pretty sticky.
- 55:12I think it's worse to go through the action and place the bet.
- 55:15And if there's evidence of you placing an illegal bet, that's
- 55:19probably a worse breaking of the law.
- 55:23It's probably a worse crime. Sure.
- 55:28But the fact that your name is, like, attached to complete an
- 55:34illegal transaction, that's pretty bad too.
- 55:46And this bookie is like, yeah, dude, I saw the checks.
- 55:50I saw Shohei's name on there. I didn't say anything.
- 55:56This bookie is 100% Bookies are sketchy.
- 56:00Bookies are sketchy. They're underground, right?
- 56:03They're underground stuff. So if you're having Ohtani's
- 56:06name exactly and you're able to tell other betters.
- 56:11Yup. Ohtani trusts me with his money.
- 56:14You should too. He's not going around saying
- 56:21Ipe. Who the heck's Ipe?
- 56:24Goes back to what you said a few minutes ago.
- 56:26Who's Ipe? Who are you?
- 56:29Yeah. No, I I'm with you.
- 56:32Boyer is the bookie's name. I can't remember what his first
- 56:37name was, but. Doesn't matter.
- 56:39It says. Bookie, Boyer.
- 56:42Boyer the bookie. Bookie bookie Boyer, it said.
- 56:46Matthew Boyer s s California book bookie Matthew Boyer.
- 56:55It says in this article this is Alice.
- 56:57His Alice was rated at some point.
- 57:05I mean yeah, rated by federal authorities in October facing
- 57:12potential felony charges. Dude, there's this is just
- 57:16messy. And you got Dave.
- 57:21Poor Dave, Poor Dave Roberts, man.
- 57:23He's like he's on the hot seat for his job and now he's being
- 57:25asked to comment on a multi $1,000,000 gambling scandal.
- 57:31Oh yeah, there it is, Missouri Mizuhara confirmed to ESPN.
- 57:35He has been paid between 300 and 500 K annually.
- 57:39What a salary. Crazy dude, So all right, let
- 57:44Well, I feel like we've been going on about this long enough,
- 57:48Jacob says in the chat. Who's hippie?
- 57:52The League rule book states that Betts placed with illegal
- 57:55bookmakers are subject to punishment at the commissioner's
- 58:00discretion. You think Robbie Manfred is
- 58:05about to run a a the name that is gonna carry over for
- 58:13centuries for this sport out of town?
- 58:20No Shot. What?
- 58:21I will say. What's that?
- 58:23I saw two gifts today on Twitter and I'd like to report that they
- 58:27made me laugh out loud. The one where the guy's like
- 58:31leaning behind the tree and he's like rubbing his hands together.
- 58:34He's like this. You know what I'm talking about?
- 58:36That was like Trevor Bauer right now.
- 58:41And then another one. Was real quick on that.
- 58:46How much more needs to happen for Trevor Bauer to finally get
- 58:49a job? Because I just saw.
- 58:51I literally just saw. I saw it was either yesterday or
- 58:55today that who was it? Somebody picked up Domingo
- 59:00Hermann. Was it the Pirates and the
- 59:02Pirates? Pirates.
- 59:03Yeah. Wasn't that like just the other
- 59:05day? I thought it was a little longer
- 59:07ago, but yeah, maybe. It was like a a a resurfaced
- 59:11tweet. But anyway, yeah, you got that.
- 59:13You've got this. Oh yeah, it's a perfect storm.
- 59:16He's gonna sue baseball. I cannot wait for that
- 59:19prediction to to come out. If you haven't listened to hot
- 59:21takes or predictions episode, please go back because we will
- 59:25reference that throughout the year.
- 59:27The other one was, you know, the guy, I don't remember what
- 59:30player it is, but like, he's the the bald, like, basketball
- 59:32player where he's like sitting on the bench.
- 59:34He's like, Oh yeah, where he was like where it was like when you
- 59:39see Yamamoto give up five runs in the first, but you remember
- 59:43you put money on the Padres money line.
- 59:48It's Otani just being like, yeah.
- 59:51Oh, man. All right, let's put a bow on
- 59:55this because we just got to get to one or two quick things here
- 59:58at the end. So you're of the mindset, you're
- 1:00:02of the belief that Ohtani is the one that was putting these bets
- 1:00:09down. Lawyers stepped in pretty late,
- 1:00:14but you can only pull at that string for so long and I think
- 1:00:19if they went rogue or maybe this comes from the top, maybe Robbie
- 1:00:29Manfred, so. So when you say.
- 1:00:31Down to him. So when you say he went rogue,
- 1:00:34I'm envisioning A regiment going to battle.
- 1:00:39Let's just let's, let's let's go World War 2 here.
- 1:00:42So you've got, you've got the front lines here, you've got the
- 1:00:46Allies fighting the Germans. The Allies go.
- 1:00:52We're not having our best day here.
- 1:00:53We should probably fall back. And then Ibei, you got the You
- 1:01:00got the Allies falling back, and then you've got Ibei San.
- 1:01:05I've got this. And he just runs into the
- 1:01:09trenches, right? Never to be seen.
- 1:01:11Again, that's what you're saying, guys.
- 1:01:13It's like when Jon Snow just started booking it.
- 1:01:18I know, I know that Jiff. I know the.
- 1:01:20Reference. Yeah, he's just booking it solo
- 1:01:22dolo. That's what IPE was doing.
- 1:01:25Good for IPE. Good for IPE.
- 1:01:28I was not an IPE guy. I respect the hustle.
- 1:01:33I respect this is the ultimate sacrifice, I think.
- 1:01:38So good for you, IPE. But I think this is.
- 1:01:43I think it's someone else pulling the strings, man.
- 1:01:45I I don't know, but I want to know when this investigation
- 1:01:48started, like when did this investigation come about?
- 1:01:57It says on in the article Boyer's operation is being
- 1:02:00investigated. It's.
- 1:02:06Got to be a few months, yeah. It's it said.
- 1:02:10I want to say. Was it like back in the fall?
- 1:02:14Because I think a report initially came out in January
- 1:02:17about some of this stuff, but it I don't think it enough had
- 1:02:21materialized for it to really warrant any sort of response.
- 1:02:24I think that's what I saw All that to say I I think this is
- 1:02:28just the beginning. I the the last thing I'll say
- 1:02:31here before we move on. I think the thing that people
- 1:02:34need to keep in mind with this, regardless what Rob Manfred
- 1:02:37says, regardless what Major League Baseball says about
- 1:02:41refusing to investigate their golden child in Shohei Otani.
- 1:02:48I'll tell you there's a couple federal agencies that couldn't
- 1:02:52care less how fast Shohei Otani can throw or how far he can hit
- 1:02:57a baseball. The IRS being one of them.
- 1:03:03The FBI Ever heard of them? Yeah, that's what we're talking
- 1:03:07about. So if they get, if they get
- 1:03:09further involved in this and you know they will.
- 1:03:14I don't, can I? I don't say I don't want fully,
- 1:03:19fully concerned about the Dodgers season.
- 1:03:23I don't think it's crazy to say this stank ain't going anywhere
- 1:03:27anytime soon. And what did I tell you?
- 1:03:31Granted, I didn't foresee a A multi $1,000,000 gambling
- 1:03:35conspiracy unfolding the same week, but earlier this week in
- 1:03:39our Hot Tags predictions episode, I said you're a fool to
- 1:03:43think that the Dodgers are gonna run the table because that's
- 1:03:45just not how baseball works. And I I simply said that because
- 1:03:48I just don't believe that baseball is that easy.
- 1:03:51Like it you you just don't assemble a super team and it's
- 1:03:54it's a guarantee. Again, that was before this
- 1:03:58happened. You throw this into the mix.
- 1:04:00I'm fully on board with what you're saying.
- 1:04:02I Yeah, I think thirsty, if this, if this continues,
- 1:04:05nervous, fully in jeopardy. I'm nervous, 'cause you got guys
- 1:04:09on that roster like Freddy Mookie, Will Smith, Jason
- 1:04:13Hayward, you got guys that just like Chris Taylor.
- 1:04:16They just want a ball. They just want a ball.
- 1:04:19Like, I don't want to deal with these questions.
- 1:04:21And if Ohtani's not answering questions, these other players
- 1:04:25are going to be hearing these questions.
- 1:04:27It's going to spread. This is not going any way
- 1:04:30anytime soon. It's going to be tough to win
- 1:04:32ball games. I'm going to be honest.
- 1:04:33I'm pretty, pretty nervous if I'm a Dodgers fan.
- 1:04:39Joey asked. What if Otani suspended and
- 1:04:41plays basketball for a year? Oh, I I saw a lot of Jordan
- 1:04:45comps with this whole thing. Yeah, look, Jordan just beat it
- 1:04:51in the nick of time before social media started coming
- 1:04:53around. It's a fact.
- 1:04:56Yeah. That is a fact.
- 1:04:59All right, well, I'm glad to know where you stand on this.
- 1:05:01I I I gotta be honest, I didn't think I had Nate thinking that
- 1:05:06Otani was a degenerate gambler on my.
- 1:05:08Bingo. Pro ipe.
- 1:05:10I'm pro ipe. Wow.
- 1:05:11OK, I've completely flipped. Pro ipe.
- 1:05:15What a what AG. To be able to to to take the
- 1:05:18bullet there. Take a lot of bullets.
- 1:05:22Yeah. Man four and a half million
- 1:05:26bullets. Let's talk real quick as a
- 1:05:31couple days pass at this point but Blake Snell finally signs
- 1:05:35with the how much said New York Giants Wild The San Francisco
- 1:05:40Giants two year $62 million deal and as you would imagine has an
- 1:05:47opt out. I think we can safely say that
- 1:05:51Scott Boris can I say it? Can I just say it?
- 1:05:58Shat the bed. Well, I wasn't gonna go that
- 1:06:02far. I was just gonna say washed.
- 1:06:05Sure, sure. And look, you can.
- 1:06:10You can tell me. Well, they're gonna opt out and
- 1:06:15then they're gonna get the bag next year if Blake Snell can't
- 1:06:20get a bag after winning the Cy Young.
- 1:06:24That's a great point. Don't try to convince me that
- 1:06:26he's somehow going to get a bag next year at What are We Talking
- 1:06:31About? I think the questions
- 1:06:34surrounding a guy like Blake Snell are are greater and
- 1:06:38outweigh what even another season of what he just did could
- 1:06:46account for. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:06:53I mean good, good signing if you're if you're the Giants.
- 1:06:57I I don't hate it. I am a little butthurt, if I'm
- 1:07:04going to be honest, just as a Yankees fan.
- 1:07:06Like the restructuring where I I don't know the exact details,
- 1:07:11but he's getting 17 now. Well.
- 1:07:17Yeah, after the season, right? Has like a signing bonus for
- 1:07:20next year. Got a 17,000,000, $17 million
- 1:07:23signing bonus and is set to make 15 mil this year and then 30 mil
- 1:07:30next year. Half of the signing bonus.
- 1:07:33Until 2027. Signing bonus doesn't count
- 1:07:36against team salary cap. I would venture to say no.
- 1:07:43'Cause that's kind of how like the Tom Bradys structured stuff
- 1:07:48like tom-tom Brady did that with the Patriots for a long time to
- 1:07:50give them like roster flexibility and stuff.
- 1:07:54So we've seen a couple workarounds this year between
- 1:07:57like Ohtani's large deferment, this restructure.
- 1:08:02I'm personally a little butthurt that like because the Yankees we
- 1:08:08talked about it last episode like and and any other team for
- 1:08:12the for that matter, being at the top of their cap.
- 1:08:15Understanding that if you crossover you're, you're
- 1:08:17reaching this point where like you're basically playing double.
- 1:08:24Paying double of 17 is a lot better than paying double of 33.
- 1:08:30You tell me the Yankees couldn't work something out like that.
- 1:08:32So like that bugs me a little bit.
- 1:08:34I don't. I don't love that as a Yankees
- 1:08:36fan, but. Yeah, I mean.
- 1:08:41Talking Logan Webb and Blake Snell and 1/2 like I can talk.
- 1:08:46I can talk noise on the Giants, but.
- 1:08:48That was the Cy Young finish order, wasn't it?
- 1:08:51You got Snell and wet. Well, Snell obviously went in.
- 1:08:54But then Webb was #2. Yep.
- 1:09:00But yeah, to your point, there was a lot of fan bases clamoring
- 1:09:02for that deal. They're gone.
- 1:09:05We waited it out. But didn't think it would be
- 1:09:09this reasonable. I use air quotes.
- 1:09:13I. Don't know.
- 1:09:15In fact, a lot of teams could have benefited from that and I'm
- 1:09:18surprised the Giants are the one to pull the trigger.
- 1:09:20But it goes back to what I said this guy.
- 1:09:21It was very evident that this guy wanted to be out West.
- 1:09:24And I think, yeah, yeah, even if it means going to a I I can't
- 1:09:31even say directionless Giants anymore because the more I think
- 1:09:34about it, they they had a heck of an offseason.
- 1:09:37Like I know, I know you've been talking a little bit of noise on
- 1:09:42on their direction, but as I don't get it the last, the last
- 1:09:45month they've really, they've really done some.
- 1:09:49I'm not a huge fan of the of the direction.
- 1:09:52In certain ways I think it's an overpay on on certain players.
- 1:09:58But like, for Boris, I mean this is a like a a wildly
- 1:10:06underwhelming. This is like, I'm, I know
- 1:10:08there's delusions of grandeur there, but like this was a
- 1:10:12horrible offseason for him. Horrible.
- 1:10:17This was not good. And I think this is the last
- 1:10:22time you're ever gonna see in, you know, Monty probably being
- 1:10:26the last, bigger name. This is the last time you're
- 1:10:29ever gonna see this Major League Baseball MLBPA.
- 1:10:34They're stepping in. There's gonna be a deadline.
- 1:10:36There's gonna be some type of period.
- 1:10:40I keep seeing all this talk about there being, like,
- 1:10:43collusion among some Major League teams.
- 1:10:45I'm like, what are we talking about?
- 1:10:49Good on. The teams, I didn't hear
- 1:10:50anything. Good on the teams for Well, I'm
- 1:10:53just in terms of like waiting out Scott Boris.
- 1:10:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:10:59Yeah. Probably not.
- 1:11:00But yeah, I like that if. That's happening.
- 1:11:02Good, good on the team. Like I know we're always pro
- 1:11:05player. We're never, we're never gonna
- 1:11:07be like pro ownership or pro league or whatever.
- 1:11:12But screw Scott, Boris, you know.
- 1:11:14In this scenario whatever. Like if if all 30, if all 30
- 1:11:18teams got in the same room and were like, you know what?
- 1:11:23Let's make this guy sweat. Then so be it, man.
- 1:11:26Like, I don't. This guy, it's he's dry.
- 1:11:29He's dragging free agency into the wrong direction, and we need
- 1:11:33to reclaim it and take it back the other way in the form of
- 1:11:36possibly a deadline. I'm seriously, we talked about
- 1:11:39it a recent episode. I'm OK with that.
- 1:11:41Yeah, me too. Me too.
- 1:11:44And like, it was perfect timing for what the NFL offseason
- 1:11:47looked like. Like for that was insane.
- 1:11:50And that was fun. Twitter was nuts for a few days
- 1:11:54and now it's like, now we know, right.
- 1:11:57And don't talk to me about well, injuries happen.
- 1:11:59Hello. The NFL.
- 1:12:02The injuries happen more there. So like no, I'm not doing that
- 1:12:07good for good for baseball to make him sweat it out.
- 1:12:10I think. Yeah, there's gonna be a
- 1:12:12deadline. Did you see the the Bob
- 1:12:15Nightingale tweet? Which take of the grain of salt,
- 1:12:18but this seemed pretty accurate that Giants GM Farhad oh.
- 1:12:27Zahidi. Zahidi, that he started off his
- 1:12:30press conference, so he's like, I deserve a a Medal of Honor
- 1:12:35from the president for having to negotiate with Scott Boris three
- 1:12:39times this offseason or whatever.
- 1:12:41Yeah, amazing. Oh my gosh.
- 1:12:44Yeah, yeah, dude. Big ballpark too, you know, Big
- 1:12:53ballpark going from San Diego to there.
- 1:12:57Speaking of that's a good point. But Speaking of ballparks, how
- 1:13:02do we closing it out here? JD Martinez today or this
- 1:13:07evening rather signed with the New York Mets.
- 1:13:11How do we like that fit at Citi Field?
- 1:13:14What was the number one year 12, one year 12, one year 12?
- 1:13:22Andy Martino on Twitter said the the Mets were always only going
- 1:13:29to sign JD Martinez if the deal became irresistible.
- 1:13:33It got their per league source 4 1/2 mil this year, 1 1/2 a year
- 1:13:39deferred from 2034 to 2038. That's pretty irresistible, for
- 1:13:46sure. What does that look like If he's
- 1:13:50traded mid mid season? They finish out the rest.
- 1:13:54But the Mets are on the hook for the deferred amount.
- 1:13:56Like you can't trade the deferred amount, right?
- 1:14:01I wouldn't think, no, I wouldn't think so, Yeah.
- 1:14:03So it'd just be very tradable, very tradable.
- 1:14:08Even if it wasn't, even if it wasn't deferred.
- 1:14:10Like 12 mil, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:14:17Unbelievable. It's crazy, man.
- 1:14:20That's the worst offseason I think an agent has ever had.
- 1:14:24I mean, it's a little more understandable with a guy like
- 1:14:26JD. Like, personally, I still think
- 1:14:28JD can provide some great value to an offense, but like on
- 1:14:32paper, I understand why. Maybe he was a little later.
- 1:14:36To be honest, dude, if if Jock Peterson is getting is getting
- 1:14:40play and it took this long for JD Martinez to get play, I'm a
- 1:14:43little lost. I'm a little confused, like to
- 1:14:46be like a 75% of the year DHA professional hitter, a guy that
- 1:14:53will absolutely talk hitting with anybody in that clubhouse.
- 1:14:58That's worth every dollar for me and very tradable.
- 1:15:02If he starts off hot, you move him.
- 1:15:06Get a prospect for a guy like yeah, I like it.
- 1:15:14I would have liked I I I don't know I would have liked to see
- 1:15:16the Padres. But all good all good.
- 1:15:21I'm gonna waste away in in Queens.
- 1:15:25I'm not an anti JD guy. Even when he was a sock, he
- 1:15:28never really like got under my skin.
- 1:15:31I like he's a hitting nerd and I like hitting nerds.
- 1:15:34Yeah, he for you at least. He's a guy that can kind of
- 1:15:38transcend the the uniform, right a little bit.
- 1:15:42So I yeah, I can appreciate that, but.
- 1:15:46Also I think it was easier easier to look alike, easier
- 1:15:49Major League look alike. Wow, that's.
- 1:15:52I'll take that man feel. Free to put that tweet up
- 1:15:55tomorrow when when you when you drop that little pornographic
- 1:15:59Kyle Koran, JD Martinez, separated at birth.
- 1:16:05I'll take it. I mean, he's a little, he's a
- 1:16:07little Husky, but I mean, yeah, but he's, I'm no string bean.
- 1:16:10He's approaching 40, right? So you got time to put on put on
- 1:16:14some L BS. Oh, going the wrong direction,
- 1:16:18but I, I I see what you're saying anyway, that that about
- 1:16:22does it went as as usual, deeper than we thought.
- 1:16:27I'll be honest, you I I didn't intend on getting it on here and
- 1:16:31having to goal on this journey with you of of where you thought
- 1:16:36this whole gambling. That.
- 1:16:39Was fantastic. Would recommend would ride here
- 1:16:42again. That was a great freaking roller
- 1:16:45coaster ride. Because I got on here thinking,
- 1:16:50you know, maybe we'd throw around a little bit of
- 1:16:52speculation. Maybe we'll show hey, maybe it
- 1:16:54was Ipe. Maybe Manfred's involved
- 1:16:56somehow. But you said, Nope, Ohtani is
- 1:16:58the degenerate. And so I said, OK, I guess this
- 1:17:01is where we're going for the next half hour.
- 1:17:03So again, apologize, went a little deep, but we had to get
- 1:17:10this to you. We know that's all people are
- 1:17:12really talking about right now. Is Zip a Shohei and the Monet?
- 1:17:18Oh, oh oh. Just found here.
- 1:17:21Just found the title of our episode right there.
- 1:17:23Oh. I like that.
- 1:17:29But anyway, we will get back to you guys next week.
- 1:17:33Nate, not to put you on the spot here, but what's your what's
- 1:17:36your recording plan? What are you what are you
- 1:17:39thinking, recording wise, with the wedding coming up?
- 1:17:41You will not hear from me post opening day immediately.
- 1:17:46Yeah, that's just that's probably a promise.
- 1:17:50So we may. Opening the 28th married on the
- 1:17:52Thursday. So you're and maybe we'll get
- 1:17:56you like for a little opening day you and then.
- 1:17:59Right, right. That's fair.
- 1:18:02Yep. And then I expect.
- 1:18:03I'll be honest. Late, late, late episode of the
- 1:18:10week, post opening day. Maybe.
- 1:18:15Lot of inconsistency. Let's be honest, Lot of
- 1:18:17inconsistency. Oh, I will say, 'cause you won't
- 1:18:20hear. I guess no one will hear from us
- 1:18:24until that point. If you're bored in the afternoon
- 1:18:28on Tuesday and you want to talk a little Yankee stuff, come meet
- 1:18:31me in the chat. I'll be on Bleacher Report 2:00
- 1:18:35PM Eastern. So you want to get in the chat,
- 1:18:38Show a little love, talk a little Yanks.
- 1:18:40I'll be there. Nate returns to Bleacher Report.
- 1:18:45There it is. That's awesome.
- 1:18:50Anything else before we get out of here?
- 1:18:55Pray for me two more days without food. 2 days.
- 1:19:00Finish out strong, finish up a week strong.
- 1:19:01It's crazy. I actually feel pretty good.
- 1:19:03I'm not gonna lie, someone started talking about
- 1:19:06cheeseburgers today and it wasn't pretty.
- 1:19:09But outside of that, are they good?
- 1:19:11Yeah, I started imagining Shake Shack and telling everybody that
- 1:19:15in and out sucks. Yeah, it was a lot.
- 1:19:19Anywho, you guys know the drill. Don't go chasing curveballs.
- 1:19:25We love y'all and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 1:19:27baseball with you guys soon. Until next time, stay filthy.
