- 0:00Speaker 1: August 24th, 1954 brought NBC listeners Dragnet, episode 262, Big Shock.
- 0:09Speaker 1: In Los Angeles, Sergeant Joe Friday and Officer Frank Smith
- 0:13Speaker 1: are assigned to burglary detail, investigating a series of break-ins
- 0:18Speaker 1: at neighborhood stores. Routine leads bring the detectives to a
- 0:22Speaker 1: list of suspects, while the trail begins to extend beyond
- 0:26Speaker 1: the shop burglaries themselves. Jack Webb is Sergeant Friday, and
- 0:31Speaker 1: Ben Alexander is Officer Smith. In the long-running police series
- 0:35Speaker 1: built around the work of the LAPD, here is Dragnet,
- 0:39Speaker 1: Big Shock. And now, our story begins.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 0:54Speaker 2: is true.
- 0:55Speaker 3: The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Dragnet... You're a detective sergeant.
- 1:07Speaker 5: You're assigned to burglary detail.
- 1:10Speaker 3: For the past several weeks, a gang has been breaking
- 1:12Speaker 3: into neighborhood stores.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Routine investigation fails to turn up any kind of a lead.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Your job, find one.
- 1:19Speaker 7: The End.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 1:34Speaker 2: next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 1:38Speaker 2: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 1:40Speaker 2: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 1:44Speaker 2: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 1:48Speaker 2: the story of your police.
- 1:49Speaker 3: Force in action.
- 1:54Speaker 7: It was Tuesday, March 20th. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 1:56Speaker 7: We were working the day watch out of burglary detail.
- 1:58Speaker 7: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Bernard. My
- 2:01Speaker 7: name's Friday. We're on our way out from the office,
- 2:03Speaker 7: and it was 9.47 a.m. when we got to the
- 2:05Speaker 7: third floor of the Bell Alarms Hotel, room 314.
- 2:10Speaker 8: Sure dark.
- 2:11Speaker 7: Want to try it again?
- 2:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker 7: Sounds like somebody's moving around.
- 2:18Speaker 8: Who is.
- 2:22Speaker 1: It?
- 2:22Speaker 7: You're Jed Nagel?
- 2:24Speaker 8: Yeah, why?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Police officers would like to talk to you.
- 2:26Speaker 8: I ain't done nothing wrong. There's no reason to rouse me.
- 2:29Speaker 3: You want to open the door?
- 2:30Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:31Speaker 8: Come on in. I just got up.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 7: You alone?
- 2:37Speaker 8: Yeah, there's nobody else.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Frank?
- 2:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:42Speaker 8: That's the bathroom.
- 2:43Speaker 9: I told you that there wasn't anybody else here.
- 2:45Speaker 7: Well, you don't mind if we look around, do you?
- 2:46Speaker 4: I do, too, mind.
- 2:47Speaker 9: I don't like your cops coming around. They're going to
- 2:50Speaker 9: ruin my reputation.
- 2:51Speaker 8: People in the building are going to think you're friends.
- 2:53Speaker 7: Well, now, I'll tell you, we won't tell them if
- 2:54Speaker 7: you don't.
- 2:56Speaker 8: What do you want, anyway?
- 2:57Speaker 7: We got a report that you were down on East
- 2:58Speaker 7: 5th last night.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 3:00Speaker 9: Well, I don't know.
- 3:02Speaker 8: All last night's kind of foggy. I don't remember where
- 3:04Speaker 8: I was exactly.
- 3:05Speaker 7: You remember being downtown?
- 3:06Speaker 8: I told you I didn't. Why? What are you trying
- 3:09Speaker 8: to lay off on me now? The place is clean, Joe.
- 3:12Speaker 8: I told you it was.
- 3:13Speaker 9: Now you want to fill me in on what this
- 3:15Speaker 9: is all about?
- 3:16Speaker 7: Well, I would like to know what you were doing
- 3:17Speaker 7: downtown last night.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Well, how do I know?
- 3:19Speaker 5: I had it rough last night.
- 3:20Speaker 8: Anybody else along with you? No, not that I remember.
- 3:23Speaker 7: Remember being near the Palace Liquor Store?
- 3:26Speaker 8: No, not right off.
- 3:28Speaker 9: I might have checked in, though. I threw a lot
- 3:30Speaker 9: of business there away.
- 3:32Speaker 4: Why all the questions?
- 3:33Speaker 8: Is there something wrong?
- 3:34Speaker 7: We'd like to have you tell us.
- 3:36Speaker 8: I'd like to help out, but there ain't nothing I
- 3:38Speaker 8: can do.
- 3:39Speaker 7: We got a field interrogation report that you were in
- 3:41Speaker 7: the area. Police car stopped and shook you down, isn't
- 3:43Speaker 7: that right?
- 3:43Speaker 8: Ain't nothing new. I'm always getting stopped.
- 3:47Speaker 7: You ever been arrested? Couple of times.
- 3:49Speaker 3: What charge? Junk. At all?
- 3:52Speaker 8: Yes. Never stood anything heavier than drunk.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Ever do any big time?
- 3:58Speaker 3: No.
- 3:58Speaker 8: A couple of months this past day. Went up to,
- 4:01Speaker 8: you know, take the cure.
- 4:02Speaker 7: Didn't hold on, did it?
- 4:03Speaker 8: Well, no.
- 4:05Speaker 7: Never mind.
- 4:07Speaker 8: You don't happen to have an aspirin, do you?
- 4:09Speaker 7: No, we don't.
- 4:11Speaker 8: How about your friend here?
- 4:12Speaker 3: He said we didn't.
- 4:13Speaker 8: Oh, that's too bad. You know, I sure could use one.
- 4:17Speaker 9: Mind if I take a look in the bathroom? There
- 4:19Speaker 9: might be something in there to take care of my head.
- 4:21Speaker 8: Sure, go ahead. We checked your record before we came
- 4:26Speaker 8: up here. Is that right?
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:28Speaker 8: Find out anything? Enough to know there's a warrant on you.
- 4:33Speaker 8: For what?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Seems you got two wives back in Texas.
- 4:36Speaker 7: They're both looking for you. All right, now come on.
- 4:39Speaker 7: Get your clothes on.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Yeah. Do you want to tell me what this is
- 4:42Speaker 5: really about?
- 4:43Speaker 7: What?
- 4:44Speaker 9: They didn't send two plainclothes cops down here to take
- 4:48Speaker 9: me in on a bigamy charge. What's the real pitch?
- 4:51Speaker 7: There was a burglary last night. I wondered if you
- 4:53Speaker 7: had anything to do with it.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Burglary?
- 4:54Speaker 7: That's right. Not me.
- 4:56Speaker 8: I haven't got the guts to get into something like that.
- 4:59Speaker 9: That's what caused all the trouble with my women.
- 5:01Speaker 4: What's that?
- 5:03Speaker 9: Oh, I'm all the time telling me I should get
- 5:05Speaker 9: off the dime and do something.
- 5:06Speaker 8: Morning, noon, night.
- 5:09Speaker 9: All the time running off at the mouth about how
- 5:11Speaker 9: I was lazy. Can't expect a man to take much
- 5:14Speaker 9: of that.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Come on, get your clothes on.
- 5:15Speaker 8: You're going to send me back to Texas?
- 5:17Speaker 7: We don't know what's going to happen. We just have
- 5:18Speaker 7: to take you in. Gee, I sure hope I don't
- 5:21Speaker 7: go back.
- 5:21Speaker 8: Woman's nothing but trouble, Mr. Nothing Else. You remember.
- 5:25Speaker 7: Must not bother you much.
- 5:26Speaker 9: Huh?
- 5:27Speaker 7: You're married to him. Jed Nagel was taken to the
- 5:33Speaker 7: main jail and held for the Texas authorities. A check
- 5:36Speaker 7: of his actions on the previous night showed that he
- 5:38Speaker 7: couldn't have committed the burglaries.
- 5:40Speaker 8: 11.30 a.m.
- 5:40Speaker 7: Frank and I checked by the office, and then we
- 5:42Speaker 7: went over to the crime lab. Ray Pinker was just
- 5:44Speaker 7: finishing up his investigation.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Come on in, Joe.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Hi.
- 5:47Speaker 2: How's it going, Ray?
- 5:48Speaker 5: Eh, just wrapping it up.
- 5:49Speaker 7: You got anything for us?
- 5:50Speaker 5: Same as you had on the last three jobs. Here,
- 5:53Speaker 5: pictures are there.
- 5:54Speaker 8: Take a look.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Oh, there's still a little dam.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:57Speaker 7: This is the entrance, huh?
- 5:58Speaker 3: Uh, yeah.
- 5:59Speaker 5: It went through the wall from the barbershop into the bar.
- 6:01Speaker 8: How'd they get in there? Barbershop? Yeah.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Used a jimmy on the back window. Climbed in, went
- 6:05Speaker 5: to work on the wall.
- 6:06Speaker 7: I wonder why they didn't go right into the bar.
- 6:08Speaker 5: The place is covered by an alarm system, Joe.
- 6:11Speaker 8: Here.
- 6:12Speaker 3: This is the box inside.
- 6:13Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 5: They turned it off after they got into the place.
- 6:16Speaker 7: You get any prints?
- 6:17Speaker 3: No.
- 6:17Speaker 5: Went over all the windows.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Safe.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Bar itself. Didn't turn up anything you can use.
- 6:21Speaker 7: What about the men themselves? Can you guess anything of them?
- 6:23Speaker 5: Must have been at least two of them. Might have
- 6:25Speaker 5: been three.
- 6:26Speaker 7: How'd you come up with that?
- 6:27Speaker 3: Footprints.
- 6:28Speaker 8: Oh.
- 6:28Speaker 5: They kicked up a lot of plaster when they went
- 6:29Speaker 5: into the place. A lot of dust around. One of them.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Wore a size 9 shoe and the other one had
- 6:33Speaker 3: a size 7 1⁄2 foot.
- 6:34Speaker 8: Where'd you get the third man?
- 6:36Speaker 5: A lot more of the smaller impressions. Either the little
- 6:39Speaker 5: guy jumped around more or else it was someone to
- 6:40Speaker 5: help make the prints.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Anything else, Ray?
- 6:43Speaker 5: We got some good pictures of the Jimmy Marks in
- 6:45Speaker 5: the barbershop. If you come up with a tool, we'll
- 6:47Speaker 5: be able to match it for you.
- 6:48Speaker 7: What about the safe, Ray?
- 6:49Speaker 3: Punch job.
- 6:50Speaker 5: No class there.
- 6:51Speaker 8: Anything on it?
- 6:52Speaker 9: Mm-mm.
- 6:53Speaker 5: How much they take this time?
- 6:54Speaker 7: Owner guesses at about 5,000, wouldn't.
- 6:56Speaker 8: It, Frank?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Gives them a total of what?
- 6:58Speaker 7: Well, according to our figures, a little over 12 since
- 7:00Speaker 7: they started working.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Scoring good.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Better than they think.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Huh?
- 7:04Speaker 7: We've just about run out of leads, Frank, and I've
- 7:06Speaker 7: been all over town trying to scratch something up. None
- 7:08Speaker 7: of them work out.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Got to be one someplace.
- 7:10Speaker 7: Yeah, Skipper keeps telling us that. Corner pocket's on his back.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Bound to be.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I guess so.
- 7:15Speaker 7: Doesn't make it any easier on us, though.
- 7:17Speaker 5: You signed the application.
- 7:18Speaker 7: Yeah, well... Thanks, Ray. Anything turns up, give us a call,
- 7:21Speaker 7: will you?
- 7:21Speaker 3: Sure, Joe.
- 7:22Speaker 8: Isn't likely, though.
- 7:23Speaker 7: You've had it.
- 7:23Speaker 5: You going back to the office?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 7: Stats office should have those cards for us by now.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Okay.
- 7:28Speaker 5: I hope they point somewhere.
- 7:29Speaker 7: You better get in line.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Take it easy, Ray.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Drop around sometime.
- 7:32Speaker 3: I'll pop for a lunch.
- 7:33Speaker 7: We got this one cleaned up a little by.
- 7:35Speaker 5: You got a deal.
- 7:35Speaker 4: My wife will go for that.
- 7:36Speaker 3: What?
- 7:36Speaker 5: She's been after me to lose some weight. Uh-huh. Looks
- 7:38Speaker 5: like it'll be a long diet.
- 7:46Speaker 7: Frank and I went back to City Hall and checked
- 7:48Speaker 7: with the stats office. In the runs they'd made, they
- 7:50Speaker 7: came up with cards on seven men who were known
- 7:52Speaker 7: to have used the same method of operation in committing burglaries.
- 7:55Speaker 7: We checked the list through R & I. Three of
- 7:57Speaker 7: the possibles were still serving sentences in San Quentin. One
- 8:00Speaker 7: of them had died, and two were in eastern jails.
- 8:02Speaker 7: The seventh, a Norris Pauley, had a record listing four
- 8:05Speaker 7: arrests and one conviction. His address was given as 4622
- 8:08Speaker 7: 50th Street. We left the office and went out to
- 8:11Speaker 7: check on him. The register listed him as living in
- 8:12Speaker 7: apartment 12. We walked upstairs. Should be on the left, huh?
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, here it.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Is.
- 8:24Speaker 7: Want to try it again?
- 8:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Just a minute.
- 8:31Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 7: Like to see Norris Pauling?
- 8:32Speaker 9: In here.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Where is he?
- 8:33Speaker 5: Don't see where that's any business of yours.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Police officers.
- 8:35Speaker 5: What do you want to see Norris about?
- 8:37Speaker 7: Better if we talk to him about that.
- 8:38Speaker 8: Get yourself.
- 8:39Speaker 5: Don't make any difference to me.
- 8:40Speaker 7: You mind if we come in? You can talk right
- 8:41Speaker 7: out there in the hall. All right, Miss Pauly, open
- 8:43Speaker 7: that door.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Take a jump. Sadie, what's all the noise?
- 8:46Speaker 7: Lady, either you open that door or we will. All right,
- 8:48Speaker 7: get out of the way, lady. All right, Pauly, hold
- 8:50Speaker 7: it right there.
- 8:51Speaker 3: You get out of here. You got no right to
- 8:52Speaker 3: break in here like this.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Oh, will you shut up, Sadie?
- 8:54Speaker 3: I'm trying to do you a favor and look what
- 8:56Speaker 3: thanks I get. Well, who asked?
- 8:57Speaker 4: You know, go on, get out of here.
- 8:58Speaker 7: This time I try to do anything for you last time.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, sure.
- 9:01Speaker 8: Bye.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Real harpy, always trying to take care of me.
- 9:05Speaker 8: Real harpy.
- 9:06Speaker 9: All right.
- 9:07Speaker 3: You know, she means good, but she.
- 9:08Speaker 8: Doesn't know how to carry it off.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Always trying to protect me.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Yeah. What do you want to see me about?
- 9:12Speaker 7: I want to ask you a couple of questions.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Sure, I'll go along with you. No reason for me
- 9:15Speaker 3: not to. What do you want to know?
- 9:16Speaker 7: How come you're home?
- 9:18Speaker 3: Where did you expect to find me?
- 9:19Speaker 7: You're on parole, aren't you? Well, you knew that before
- 9:21Speaker 7: you asked the question. Supposed to have a job?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I got one.
- 9:23Speaker 7: How come you're not working today?
- 9:25Speaker 3: I see what you're getting at. I've got a cold
- 9:27Speaker 3: kind of virus infection.
- 9:28Speaker 7: Figured I'd take the day off, get it all cleared up.
- 9:30Speaker 3: I was in bed when you got here. That's the
- 9:32Speaker 3: reason you had all the trouble.
- 9:33Speaker 7: Your employer know where you are?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Well, sure. I called him and told him. I'm not
- 9:35Speaker 3: trying to pull any deals. I've been punching the clock
- 9:37Speaker 3: since I got out. I want to keep it that way.
- 9:39Speaker 7: Where do you work?
- 9:40Speaker 3: Parking lot downtown. Not killing the world, but I'm paying
- 9:42Speaker 3: the rent. I got no beef.
- 9:43Speaker 7: How do you spend your off time?
- 9:44Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 9:45Speaker 7: When you're not working, what do you do?
- 9:46Speaker 3: Mostly sit around the.
- 9:47Speaker 8: House, watch the TV.
- 9:48Speaker 7: You go out nights?
- 9:49Speaker 8: No, not much.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Maybe every couple of weeks, he'd go down to the
- 9:51Speaker 3: Mexican place on the corner, have dinner, take in a show.
- 9:53Speaker 3: That's about it.
- 9:53Speaker 7: You've been out this week?
- 9:54Speaker 3: What night?
- 9:55Speaker 7: Tell us about all of them, will you?
- 9:56Speaker 3: No go. I've been home every night.
- 9:58Speaker 8: Can you prove that?
- 9:59Speaker 7: What, do I have to? It'll make you look better.
- 10:01Speaker 8: Well, ask Sadie.
- 10:01Speaker 3: She'll tell you. We've been home together every night, just
- 10:03Speaker 3: sitting here watching the TV.
- 10:04Speaker 7: What time do you go to work?
- 10:05Speaker 3: I check in about 7.
- 10:06Speaker 7: When do you quit?
- 10:07Speaker 8: 4.30.
- 10:08Speaker 3: Once in a while, if it's crowded, I stay over.
- 10:09Speaker 3: You work late this week? No, you can check that
- 10:11Speaker 3: with the boss.
- 10:11Speaker 8: He'll tell you.
- 10:12Speaker 7: All right, we will.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Well, what's this all about, huh? You guys are after something,
- 10:15Speaker 3: aren't you?
- 10:16Speaker 7: That's right.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Well, why don't you tell me what it is? I
- 10:17Speaker 3: hear stuff once in a while.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I might be able to help you out.
- 10:19Speaker 8: You see the old crowd anymore, Norris?
- 10:21Speaker 3: Well, once in a while they walk down the street.
- 10:23Speaker 3: They nod, I nod. Nothing more.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Now, what are you after? Tunnel jobs.
- 10:27Speaker 3: You figured I might have a piece of that action, huh?
- 10:30Speaker 7: Matches the way you work?
- 10:31Speaker 3: No, it doesn't fit. I told you, I've been with
- 10:33Speaker 3: the bucket since I got out. Even with taxes, I
- 10:34Speaker 3: make more.
- 10:35Speaker 8: You heard anything about who's working?
- 10:37Speaker 3: Doesn't go out of this room?
- 10:38Speaker 7: We won't take it.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Okay. The boys found out I was giving you information.
- 10:42Speaker 3: My insurance premiums sure go up real fast. Well, don't
- 10:44Speaker 3: you worry about it.
- 10:45Speaker 7: Nobody will know.
- 10:46Speaker 6: Words are out.
- 10:46Speaker 8: There's two guys.
- 10:47Speaker 7: We had that going in.
- 10:48Speaker 3: They pulled three jobs.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Well, they made it four. I don't know about the
- 10:51Speaker 7: other one. It'll be in the papers.
- 10:52Speaker 4: You got a name?
- 10:54Speaker 3: No.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Just heard that they were working.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Where'd you hear? A fellow down on 7th. He sells
- 10:58Speaker 3: papers down there. We have a cup of coffee once
- 10:59Speaker 3: in a while. He told me.
- 11:01Speaker 7: You know where we can get in touch with him?
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, but it'd be better if you didn't. He'll lead
- 11:04Speaker 3: right back to me.
- 11:05Speaker 8: Sadie?
- 11:06Speaker 5: Hey, wait a minute, honey.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Where are you going with the suitcase? I'm leaving you. Oh,
- 11:09Speaker 3: come on. Isn't anything serious? You don't ever talk to me.
- 11:13Speaker 3: If I do you a favor and you take their side,
- 11:14Speaker 3: I've had it from you, bum. Oh, come on, Sadie.
- 11:16Speaker 3: Don't be sore. Take your hand off of me. Baby, please,
- 11:19Speaker 3: don't be sore. I'm going to tell you once more.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Take your hand off of me. Look, I'm sorry if
- 11:23Speaker 3: I hurt your feelings, Sadie. What did you go and
- 11:26Speaker 3: hit me for? Because you're a bum. Don't go trying
- 11:29Speaker 3: to get me to come back to you. I'm through
- 11:31Speaker 3: this time.
- 11:33Speaker 7: Too bad, Paulie.
- 11:33Speaker 8: No, it isn't.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I've been trying to figure some way to get her
- 11:36Speaker 3: to walk out since I got out of jail.
- 11:37Speaker 7: I've never been able to do it.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I sure ain't sorry. I ought to buy you guys
- 11:40Speaker 3: a drink for taking care of it for me.
- 11:42Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Only one thing that worries me is her big mouth.
- 11:44Speaker 3: She's always talking. She might have heard me say I'd
- 11:46Speaker 3: give you a hand. She blabs that around. I'm in
- 11:47Speaker 3: real trouble.
- 11:48Speaker 7: You didn't give us any names.
- 11:49Speaker 3: That doesn't make any difference. She gets to talking. She'll
- 11:51Speaker 3: have me telling you the name of every hoodlum in town.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Whether that gets around, I'm a gone duck. I got
- 11:55Speaker 3: to get after her. Yeah, Sadie and her big mouth.
- 11:57Speaker 3: You're going to get me in trouble.
- 11:59Speaker 7: Well, it makes you even then, doesn't it?
- 12:00Speaker 3: Huh? Yours kept you out of it.
- 12:05Speaker 7: Before we left the apartment, we checked Paulie's story and
- 12:08Speaker 7: verified the fact that he was not implicated in the burglaries.
- 12:10Speaker 7: We drove down to the corner of 7th and Wild.
- 12:12Speaker 7: We found a newsman Norris Paulie had told us about.
- 12:15Speaker 7: We talked to him for about 15 minutes before we
- 12:16Speaker 7: were able to convince him that he wouldn't get into
- 12:18Speaker 7: trouble by giving us the information that he had. He
- 12:20Speaker 7: told us what he knew about the tunnel burglaries. He
- 12:22Speaker 7: was unable to give us a name of the suspect
- 12:24Speaker 7: that he had in mind, but he did give us
- 12:25Speaker 7: a description and a nickname, Kiko. With this information, we
- 12:29Speaker 7: returned to the city hall and checked the moniker file.
- 12:31Speaker 7: There were several key codes listed, but only two that
- 12:33Speaker 7: matched the description. The first one checked out clean. The second,
- 12:36Speaker 7: a Franklin James Zweig, WMA, 33 years old, had done
- 12:39Speaker 7: time in the state penitentiary as a cat burglar. We
- 12:41Speaker 7: contacted the state authority and found that Zweig was on
- 12:43Speaker 7: active parole. From them, we got his address and we
- 12:45Speaker 7: went out to see him. It was a small one-story
- 12:47Speaker 7: modern house built in the early 30s. The chrome railing
- 12:50Speaker 7: up the front stairs was rusty and the paint on
- 12:51Speaker 7: the front of the building was peeling. We rang the
- 12:53Speaker 7: bell and waited.
- 12:55Speaker 9: Yep.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Your name's Wig?
- 12:56Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right.
- 12:57Speaker 8: Police officers.
- 12:58Speaker 7: This is Sergeant Joe Friday. My name's Smith.
- 13:00Speaker 3: What do you want me to do? Why don't you
- 13:01Speaker 3: ask us in? It's all the same to you. I
- 13:03Speaker 3: don't want to get the carpet dirty.
- 13:04Speaker 8: Let's talk outside.
- 13:05Speaker 7: Come on, mister. Get your coat.
- 13:06Speaker 8: What for?
- 13:06Speaker 3: I want to talk to you. About what?
- 13:07Speaker 7: We'll tell you about it downtown.
- 13:08Speaker 3: You make a charge or I ain't leaving the house.
- 13:10Speaker 7: All right.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Suspicion of burglary. You're going to drag Dad up again.
- 13:13Speaker 7: We don't make the rules.
- 13:14Speaker 3: You do time once in your life and the cops
- 13:15Speaker 3: never get off your back.
- 13:16Speaker 7: He should have thought of that going in.
- 13:17Speaker 3: What good would it do? You cops never learn.
- 13:19Speaker 7: Well, you're not much of an example, are you?
- 13:20Speaker 3: What's that mean?
- 13:21Speaker 7: You're probably going back for another course. Before we took
- 13:27Speaker 7: the suspect downtown, we made a thorough search of his home.
- 13:30Speaker 7: We found nothing to tie him in with the burglaries.
- 13:32Speaker 7: He was taken to the squad room and questioned for
- 13:33Speaker 7: over an hour. During that time, he'd say nothing. We
- 13:36Speaker 7: was booked in at the main jail, and Frank and
- 13:37Speaker 7: I checked out of the office. The next day, Wednesday,
- 13:40Speaker 7: March 21st, we had him brought from the cell. We
- 13:42Speaker 7: talked to him in the interrogation room in the main jail.
- 13:44Speaker 3: How long do you guys think you're going to be
- 13:45Speaker 3: able to hold me?
- 13:45Speaker 7: Depends on when you decide to talk.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Tell you what, cop, I'll make a deal with you.
- 13:49Speaker 7: No deals.
- 13:49Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 13:50Speaker 7: We don't want you. We want the guy who engineered
- 13:51Speaker 7: the burglaries.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Well, then why don't you let me go now?
- 13:53Speaker 7: I want to make sure the story gets a play
- 13:55Speaker 7: in the papers.
- 13:56Speaker 5: Well, what's that going to prove?
- 13:57Speaker 7: Your friend will get worried. He'll figure you're going to talk.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Look, if I was mixed up in anything, I'm not
- 14:01Speaker 3: one way or the other.
- 14:02Speaker 5: But if I was, why should he get worried?
- 14:03Speaker 7: Word's out that he's the brains.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Well, where's that from?
- 14:05Speaker 4: All over town.
- 14:06Speaker 3: It's not true.
- 14:07Speaker 7: The way we got our stories around, you went along
- 14:08Speaker 7: for the ride.
- 14:09Speaker 8: Other fellas did all the brain work.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Who said that?
- 14:11Speaker 7: Everybody we've talked to.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Well, then if everybody's talking about him, why ain't he
- 14:14Speaker 3: here instead of me?
- 14:15Speaker 8: Because he's a smart one of the pair. Somebody's got
- 14:17Speaker 8: a fall, might as well be you. He can pick
- 14:19Speaker 8: up another partner.
- 14:20Speaker 3: You telling me the real scam? That's the way we
- 14:21Speaker 3: get it. Not true.
- 14:23Speaker 7: Well, we only got your word for that. All I
- 14:25Speaker 7: know is if I ever get in trouble, I'd want
- 14:26Speaker 7: to make sure I had a pigeon waiting to take
- 14:27Speaker 7: the beef. You're here.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He's out.
- 14:30Speaker 7: Now, you tell me who's smart.
- 14:31Speaker 3: How'd you get to me?
- 14:32Speaker 8: It was in the books.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Not like this.
- 14:34Speaker 7: I fell for cat burglary.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Nothing to do with tunnel jobs. Somebody had to blow
- 14:37Speaker 3: the whistle.
- 14:37Speaker 7: That so?
- 14:38Speaker 8: Sure.
- 14:39Speaker 3: You had no call to pick me up. Just right
- 14:40Speaker 3: out of left field, you walk in.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Who did it?
- 14:42Speaker 3: Who made the call? Somebody did, huh? Somebody pointed me out.
- 14:48Speaker 3: Come on. I know who it was. You ain't going
- 14:49Speaker 3: to get him in trouble telling me. Somebody told you,
- 14:53Speaker 3: didn't they? That's right. It all fits real good. Well,
- 14:56Speaker 3: I tell you this, cop, I ain't that dumb. A
- 14:58Speaker 3: lot of things I've done that I don't want anybody
- 14:59Speaker 3: to know about, but I never blew the whistle on
- 15:01Speaker 3: a friend. That's one thing I didn't do. All that
- 15:03Speaker 3: stuff about him being the brains, that's.
- 15:05Speaker 7: A lot of coconuts.
- 15:06Speaker 3: He can't get into a phone booth without help.
- 15:08Speaker 5: I figured the whole deal.
- 15:09Speaker 3: It was me who said we'd had it and ought
- 15:10Speaker 3: to stop. He wanted to keep going.
- 15:12Speaker 5: That's why I left.
- 15:13Speaker 8: When was this?
- 15:14Speaker 3: Night before last. After we got through, he was sore
- 15:16Speaker 3: because there was only a little over $ 4, 000 in the box.
- 15:19Speaker 3: We heard there was around 10. Yeah. Said he wanted
- 15:21Speaker 3: to make a big score before we quit. Said to
- 15:23Speaker 3: go together on one more.
- 15:24Speaker 5: Told me what he wanted to do.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I wanted no part of it. The guy's off his rocker.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I left.
- 15:28Speaker 7: What's he got in mind, you know?
- 15:29Speaker 3: Wants to tunnel into a bank.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 15:43Speaker 2: police force in action.
- 15:55Speaker 7: We continued to talk to Franklin Zweig. From him, we
- 15:57Speaker 7: got a complete description of the second suspect and the
- 15:59Speaker 7: name Lester Kroll. We checked the name through R &
- 16:01Speaker 7: I and we came up with a record for him.
- 16:03Speaker 7: Listed were several arrests for purse snatching and suspicion of assault.
- 16:07Speaker 7: In spite of the arrest, Kroll hadn't served any time
- 16:09Speaker 7: in jail. We showed the mugshot and the package to
- 16:11Speaker 7: Zweig and we got a positive identification. We asked the
- 16:14Speaker 7: suspect in custody where Kroll lived. He gave us an
- 16:17Speaker 7: address on South Figaro, but when we checked there, we
- 16:19Speaker 7: found that Kroll had left without giving a forwarding address.
- 16:22Speaker 7: We talked to all of the people listed in this
- 16:23Speaker 7: package as having known the suspect. None of them could
- 16:26Speaker 7: or would tell us where the man was. We questioned
- 16:28Speaker 7: Franklin Zweig further, but he was unable to tell us
- 16:30Speaker 7: what bank Kroll had in mind. We contacted Vern Alm
- 16:33Speaker 7: of the Bank of America, Frank Stumpf of the Security
- 16:35Speaker 7: First National, and other special agents of Southern California banks.
- 16:38Speaker 7: They in turn notified the branch managers to be on
- 16:40Speaker 7: the lookout for evidence of Kroll working in their neighborhoods.
- 16:44Speaker 7: Special M.O. bulletins were put out to all officers in
- 16:46Speaker 7: the city, giving particulars on the methods the suspect was
- 16:48Speaker 7: known to use. In addition to these, local broadcasts and
- 16:51Speaker 7: APBs were gotten out on all suspects. For a week,
- 16:53Speaker 7: the search dragged on. During that time, there were no
- 16:55Speaker 7: further reports of attempted tunnelings and no sign of Lester Crowell. Friday,
- 16:59Speaker 7: March 30th, 8.01 a.m., I checked into the office. Frank
- 17:02Speaker 7: was waiting for me.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Morning, old buddy.
- 17:05Speaker 7: Hi, Frank.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Beautiful day, huh?
- 17:07Speaker 7: No, it's a little cold out.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Yeah, but it doesn't make any difference to you, huh,
- 17:10Speaker 4: old buddy?
- 17:11Speaker 7: No, no, it doesn't.
- 17:12Speaker 4: You feel any different?
- 17:14Speaker 3: Hmm?
- 17:14Speaker 4: You're feeling different today than you did yesterday.
- 17:17Speaker 7: Are you all right?
- 17:18Speaker 4: Never felt better.
- 17:19Speaker 7: How about you, old buddy? Yeah, I'm fine.
- 17:23Speaker 8: Hey, just a minute. I know what's wrong.
- 17:24Speaker 7: You do, huh? Yeah. You didn't think I'd forget, did you? Listen,
- 17:27Speaker 7: I don't even know what you're talking about.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Ah, come on, old buddy.
- 17:30Speaker 7: Just a minute. I'll get it.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Got it right over here, right up on the top shelf.
- 17:35Speaker 5: I brought it in myself.
- 17:40Speaker 7: Here you are, Joe. Wrapped it myself, too.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Looks pretty good, huh?
- 17:44Speaker 7: Yeah, I guess it does.
- 17:45Speaker 6: I didn't have nothing to put on the top, so
- 17:46Speaker 6: I found a couple of Christmas tree ornaments.
- 17:48Speaker 7: Put them on with a ribbon.
- 17:50Speaker 8: That's nice.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Come on.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Dig down in there.
- 17:54Speaker 7: What is it?
- 17:55Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 17:55Speaker 7: Open it up.
- 17:57Speaker 6: Got them yesterday after lunch. Thought I wasn't ever going
- 17:59Speaker 6: to get you out of the way. Remember when I
- 18:01Speaker 6: told you I was going out.
- 18:02Speaker 4: To buy a new hat? Remember?
- 18:06Speaker 7: You know, Frank, I think maybe you made a little mistake.
- 18:08Speaker 6: Oh, just take the top right off.
- 18:10Speaker 8: The box, Joe.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Open it right up.
- 18:12Speaker 8: All right. There. What do you think?
- 18:21Speaker 7: Nice, Frank.
- 18:22Speaker 4: You bet. Police line slippers. Got a pair myself.
- 18:25Speaker 7: Greatest thing in the world, a cold morning.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Keep your feet warm, Joe.
- 18:28Speaker 8: Police is warm, you know. Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 7: I got a pair myself. See the card?
- 18:33Speaker 4: There's a card there.
- 18:35Speaker 7: Open it up. Go on, read it. Go ahead.
- 18:41Speaker 9: Out loud?
- 18:41Speaker 3: Sure.
- 18:44Speaker 7: This is the day that comes once a year. The
- 18:46Speaker 7: day your face does shine. A happy day for one
- 18:50Speaker 7: and all. Because today you're nine. Doesn't match too good,
- 18:54Speaker 7: I guess. It's all I had at the shoe store.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Happy birthday, Joe.
- 19:00Speaker 7: You know, I just don't know what to say, Frank.
- 19:02Speaker 8: Well, I know how you feel, old buddy.
- 19:04Speaker 7: I understand you're all kind of choked up, huh?
- 19:06Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 19:07Speaker 7: Yes, I am. This isn't my birthday, you know.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Oh, you're choked up.
- 19:11Speaker 9: Huh?
- 19:12Speaker 7: This is not my birthday, Frank.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Well, it's the 30th, isn't it?
- 19:15Speaker 8: March 30th?
- 19:16Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 7: My birthday's August 30th. Now, wait a minute, buddy.
- 19:21Speaker 6: It can't be.
- 19:21Speaker 7: I got it right here in my little book.
- 19:23Speaker 8: Wait a minute.
- 19:24Speaker 9: See?
- 19:25Speaker 4: See right here?
- 19:26Speaker 7: Well, March 30th, Joe's birthday. I wrote that myself. You
- 19:30Speaker 7: know my handwriting.
- 19:31Speaker 8: March 30th.
- 19:31Speaker 7: Yeah, you got the date right, but it's not mine.
- 19:35Speaker 8: You kidding me?
- 19:36Speaker 7: Frank, I know my own birthday.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Huh.
- 19:40Speaker 7: It must be somebody. Who do I know named Joe?
- 19:44Speaker 7: I got it.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Joe.
- 19:47Speaker 7: Burglary Friday.
- 19:48Speaker 8: Yes, sir. March 30th.
- 19:50Speaker 7: That's right.
- 19:51Speaker 8: August 30th.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Where is that? I see.
- 19:56Speaker 7: All right, sir. We'll be right out.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Right away.
- 20:00Speaker 7: Come on, old buddy. We got one to roll on.
- 20:02Speaker 8: August 30th.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Huh?
- 20:03Speaker 7: I say we got to roll. Let's go. Barry over
- 20:05Speaker 7: at the street department. They got a call this morning.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:07Speaker 7: Looks like somebody's trying to dig a tunnel in the
- 20:08Speaker 7: storm drain. Frank and I left the office and we
- 20:14Speaker 7: drove over to the corner of Silver Lake Boulevard and
- 20:16Speaker 7: McCollum Street. We met with Barry Falcon of the street department.
- 20:19Speaker 7: He led us to a manhole in the middle of
- 20:20Speaker 7: the intersection. He told us that there'd been numerous complaints
- 20:23Speaker 7: from citizens in the area that the cover on the
- 20:25Speaker 7: outlet kept rattling. When the street department checked it, they
- 20:28Speaker 7: found that the cushioning material around the metal plate had
- 20:30Speaker 7: been removed. It was replaced, but the next day there
- 20:32Speaker 7: were several more calls. When the neighbors were questioned, they
- 20:35Speaker 7: told of a man who arrived in a pickup truck
- 20:37Speaker 7: about 2.30 in the morning. He'd lift the cover and
- 20:39Speaker 7: enter the storm drain. Before the daylight hours, he'd leave
- 20:42Speaker 7: and he'd drive away. From the description they gave, it
- 20:44Speaker 7: was possible that the repairman was from the street maintenance department,
- 20:47Speaker 7: but a check of their record showed that no crews
- 20:49Speaker 7: were working.
- 20:49Speaker 3: In that area.
- 20:51Speaker 7: After talking with Falcon, Frank and I climbed down the
- 20:53Speaker 7: ladder into the drain. We walked about 20 feet up
- 20:55Speaker 7: the tunnel and we found the reason that we'd been called.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Barry tell you what's over us? From there's we can
- 21:01Speaker 7: figure it's the vault in the bank, isn't it?
- 21:04Speaker 8: Sure is, I'm kidding.
- 21:07Speaker 7: Take a look over here.
- 21:07Speaker 6: Got all the equipment, lamps, couple of drills. Yeah, but
- 21:12Speaker 6: he's not going to be able to use them unless
- 21:13Speaker 6: he ties into an electric line someplace.
- 21:15Speaker 7: I probably figured he'd run into one.
- 21:18Speaker 4: And what's that over there in the corner?
- 21:20Speaker 7: We'll take a look.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Can you see it?
- 21:25Speaker 7: Yeah, but I leave it alone. What do you got?
- 21:28Speaker 7: He's got it all figured. What do you mean? That
- 21:30Speaker 7: bottle over there?
- 21:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:32Speaker 7: Looks like nitroglycerin. The people in the immediate vicinity were
- 21:38Speaker 7: shown the mug shots of Lester Crowe. He was positively
- 21:41Speaker 7: identified as the man who had worked in the storm drain.
- 21:43Speaker 7: We asked about the truck, but none of the people
- 21:45Speaker 7: could give us a good description of it. The employees
- 21:47Speaker 7: in the bank were cautioned, and Frank and I arranged
- 21:49Speaker 7: for a 24-hour surveillance to be set up on the
- 21:51Speaker 7: storm drain outlet. Two days passed without activity, and then
- 21:54Speaker 7: on Monday, April 3rd, we waited in our car down
- 21:57Speaker 7: the street from the intersection. 2.20 a.m.
- 21:59Speaker 3: Another cup of coffee, Joe?
- 22:01Speaker 7: Yeah, wouldn't be bad. Boy, it sure gets cold this
- 22:08Speaker 7: time of the morning.
- 22:08Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 22:10Speaker 7: Say, I finally figured it out. What do you mean?
- 22:12Speaker 4: Who Joe was.
- 22:15Speaker 8: What's that? Here. Yeah, it's hot.
- 22:17Speaker 7: Yeah, thank you. Joe. You know the name of my book,
- 22:19Speaker 7: The Birthday? Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 22:20Speaker 4: It's our mailman.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Hmm?
- 22:23Speaker 4: It's our mailman. It was his birthday. Oh.
- 22:26Speaker 7: I got him one of those cards that says, we're sorry,
- 22:28Speaker 7: we forgot.
- 22:28Speaker 8: You know the kind.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 22:30Speaker 7: We gave him the card and a carton of cigarettes.
- 22:32Speaker 7: Old Joe sure got a kick out of it.
- 22:33Speaker 9: Yep.
- 22:35Speaker 7: Sure gets cold this time of the morning.
- 22:38Speaker 8: Take a look.
- 22:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I see it.
- 22:41Speaker 8: Clock in there.
- 22:41Speaker 3: You see his face?
- 22:43Speaker 4: Not from here.
- 22:44Speaker 8: Until he gets out.
- 22:46Speaker 7: Look at.
- 22:51Speaker 8: That.
- 22:51Speaker 7: He even got a hook for the manhole cover. How
- 22:54Speaker 7: do you like that? Watch it now. He's going under
- 22:55Speaker 7: the light. It's him. All right, let's let him get
- 22:59Speaker 7: down in the storm drain. That way we'll be able
- 23:01Speaker 7: to get him while he's working.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:04Speaker 7: Let him get in there.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Okay. Okay.
- 23:08Speaker 8: Okay, let's go.
