- 0:00You know, having put on with the audience talking about scheduling. Here,
- 0:03I have a I have one Twitter question here. This is from Josh.
- 0:09Can you look for players in the portal between semesters? Is that allowed?
- 0:15Uh? Well, you can look all you want, but they can't play,
- 0:19Okay, So even if they show up, you know, a mid
- 0:22semester or mid year, they lose all that time anyway. Okay, So
- 0:29no, right, simple, that doesn't work. All right. Who's got
- 0:32a question for coach here in the audience trading deadlines past? Just to follow
- 0:36up on that, coach, Uh, what does the portal look like for
- 0:41Yukon women's basketball in the future. I don't think there's been a lot of
- 0:46a lot of portal uh activity to date. What does it look like?
- 0:49And if we can ask you to look into the future, well, uh
- 0:54huh. Two two transfers that we Dorka and loub are both worked out pretty
- 1:03well. So I think if you if you go into that, it's got
- 1:07to be the right people. It's got to be the right fit that fit
- 1:11your program, and it's got to be they're leaving for the right reason.
- 1:17We had before there was a portal when Azree Stevens came here from Duke.
- 1:22There's got to be a good reason why the kids are leaving. Okay,
- 1:26if they're leaving, I don't like the coach, well you're not gonna like
- 1:29me either. Now my teammates, I don't like my teammates, Well,
- 1:33you're not going to like our teammates. If you're that kind of kid,
- 1:36that's what you're going to be. And I don't want any part of that.
- 1:38So finding the right fit, finding the right kid that fills a need
- 1:46for us. Yeah, it's like NBA free agency. You know, you
- 1:53have somebody on your staff that just monitors that, which is kind of nuts,
- 1:57right, And and I can see where as the years go on,
- 2:06we'll probably have kids going to the portal that don't play as much as they
- 2:08think they should play, or it's not what'sn't a good fit for them.
- 2:13And we'll go into portal and bring some kids here that you know, who
- 2:17knows why we didn't recruit them or you know, and they end up being
- 2:24They're going to end up being pretty good players. And it could be like
- 2:29real high end players from high end, big time schools, or it could
- 2:31be like a lou a mid major from Fairfield. You just you know,
- 2:38it could be like Dorka from Ohio State, or it could be lou like
- 2:40at Fairfield. You can find really good players that are good fits anywhere,
- 2:46and I can imagine and what's happening now, it's which, this is bad
- 2:50for high school kids. But if you're a college coach, now you're like,
- 2:52why do I want to recruit a seventeen year old kid when I can
- 2:54recruit a twenty year old off of another team that's already played college. So
- 3:00the high school kids get screwed in all this. And now if there's a
- 3:04lawsuit where these kids can transfer any time they want, well, now it's
- 3:07supposedly you can only transfer once. The second time you transfer you have to
- 3:12sit out. Well, you know they're going to sue. Some players are
- 3:16going to sue the NCAA and go, why my mental health is being affected
- 3:22by being So it's a disgrace to people that actually have mental health issues that
- 3:27players are bullshitting their way through college saying I can't play here. I'm not
- 3:31playing here, so I'm going to leave. But I can't leave, so
- 3:36I'm going to say I have mental health issues here? What those go away?
- 3:38On that plane fight. You could take a plane now to another school
- 3:43and fix your mental health issues. Wow, I'm want to sell tickets on
- 3:46that plane. How you doing, Coach? I remember growing up watching some
- 3:53legendary games with you and Tennessee, and I always remember just and excited about
- 4:00that, and I always wanted to know how it felt leading up to that
- 4:04game. What was the energy leg You know, it was crazy because in
- 4:11the beginning, in the beginning, it was they were They were, you
- 4:16know, Goliath, and we were David, and then we would And it's
- 4:20interesting the way that whole thing started because there was almost three times where if
- 4:29we had won this NCAA tournament game, our next game would have been Tennessee
- 4:33And actually was our very first NCAA tournament that we that we made, and
- 4:38we lost to LaSalle, and our next game would have been Tennessee. The
- 4:42following year, we lost to Clemson on buzzer beater, like we shot it
- 4:49to win and the ball went I think it even touched the net and it
- 4:53came out, and the next game would have been against Tennessee. And and
- 5:00finally when they put the series together, no one really gave us like we
- 5:09didn't we weren't the favorites. So that first game that we played on Martin
- 5:12Luther King Day, I've never seen Gamble Pavilion like that before or since,
- 5:17and no one wanted to leave the building and it was just the most incredible
- 5:23atmosphere ever. And then we played them in the National Championship game three months
- 5:30later in April, and we beat them again, and like nobody does that
- 5:39beats them twice in a row. Then we had to play at their place
- 5:44in December. So in a span of less than a year, we played
- 5:48them three times in one all three, and that's when all hell broke loose.
- 5:54Now it just became half field and McCoy's. It became really really anti
- 6:00agonistic. It became you know, even though everybody tried to make like,
- 6:02you know, yeah, I respect you, you respect me. It was
- 6:08bad. It was really bad. And the best part about it though,
- 6:11was, and Jamel will tell you, because she was on all three of
- 6:15those teams that in all three of those games, they didn't know a single
- 6:19player on Tennessee. I didn't even show them film of the first Tennessee game.
- 6:26They had no idea who they were. They knew it was Tennessee but
- 6:30they had no idea what they were going to. We just went over our
- 6:32stuff in practice, no film, no nothing, and you know, and
- 6:38then after that it became you know, what suits am I wearing? What's
- 6:42Pat wearing? You know, it just became stupid. Right, you did
- 6:47that comment off air because we got to get to one last break here.
- 6:49Yeah, final segment with Gino next year on the Yukon Sports Network from Lairfield,
