Transcript
- 0:01Last week, this woman caused a stir.
- 0:04She won the Masters division at crash,
- 0:06and many questioned,
- 0:08was she in the right division?
- 0:09We're going to talk about it next.
- 0:31What is going on, everybody?
- 0:32We have Caroline Klutz in the house today.
- 0:35What's going on?
- 1:01hey not much yeah um i'm super excited
- 1:04to have you on i actually talked to
- 1:07you before crash about coming on the show
- 1:11and then made such a big stir and
- 1:15my co-host carolyn privo made a couple
- 1:17comments that just stirred up the internet
- 1:21and uh so i'm so excited you're here
- 1:23now because we can kind of talk through
- 1:25that and then go into a just a
- 1:27normal conversation
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:29Sounds good.
- 1:30That's awesome.
- 1:31I love Carolyn.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:32And I know she wants a rematch.
- 1:35I know that.
- 1:37Yeah.
- 1:37She should have been at crash, man.
- 1:39She should have been at crash.
- 1:42She was like, I think she was like,
- 1:45she didn't even think about the master's
- 1:46division at crash.
- 1:48And when she saw that you only had
- 1:50like five girls there,
- 1:51like she wanted to be there.
- 1:54Right.
- 1:54Yeah.
- 1:56Well, to be honest,
- 1:57I do remember asking her when we were
- 2:00getting drug tested at the Masters Games.
- 2:02I'm like, hey,
- 2:03you should do Crash Masters.
- 2:04Like, you're going to do it?
- 2:06And she's like, no, you know,
- 2:08I look kind of far away.
- 2:10So, I mean, she does.
- 2:11She'd have to come in for it for
- 2:12sure.
- 2:12It's just an hour and like a fourteen
- 2:14minute drive for me up the street.
- 2:15So it's easier for me to get there.
- 2:17But that would've been awesome to have her
- 2:18there for sure.
- 2:20Yeah,
- 2:21and I would have loved to have seen
- 2:22the rematch,
- 2:22the way you guys went head-to-head at the
- 2:24games.
- 2:25It would have been cool to see part
- 2:27two.
- 2:27And I wonder how she feels like she
- 2:29would have done on those workouts in
- 2:31particular.
- 2:31Cause you know,
- 2:32JR has a certain style of how he
- 2:34programs and over the years of doing JR's
- 2:37competitions,
- 2:38whether team or masters individual,
- 2:41I like his style.
- 2:42I don't necessarily train it all the time,
- 2:44but when I see those workouts,
- 2:46they just excite me.
- 2:47I'm like, yeah,
- 2:47something heavy and weird and odd object.
- 2:50And like,
- 2:52running.
- 2:52I don't know.
- 2:53So it's like,
- 2:54I get excited about those workouts and
- 2:55like,
- 2:56I know they're gonna be hard and I
- 2:57just go into a different, I don't know,
- 3:00zone or something,
- 3:01different gear with them.
- 3:02But I do wonder,
- 3:03I don't know if she mentioned,
- 3:03I didn't see, but if she mentioned like,
- 3:05oh yeah,
- 3:05those have been good workouts for me or,
- 3:07you know.
- 3:08So, you know,
- 3:10she prides herself on being an athlete
- 3:11because she played hockey and soccer and
- 3:14all of the,
- 3:15so she likes the surprise stuff.
- 3:17Yeah.
- 3:18And that was different and new and she
- 3:19can adapt to.
- 3:21Um, now she had,
- 3:22everybody knows she's like a world-class
- 3:24deadlifter.
- 3:25Um, and that is her like home run,
- 3:28but she loves when she's faced with figure
- 3:32this out.
- 3:33Yeah.
- 3:35Well, I saw her do some like.
- 3:36Thirty inch box clear overs, you know,
- 3:39when the workout was only twenty four inch
- 3:41for us at crash.
- 3:42So watching her do those, I was like,
- 3:44Ooh, she might.
- 3:45Yeah.
- 3:45She,
- 3:45she'd give me a good raise for sure
- 3:47on those.
- 3:48It would've been cool to see.
- 3:49Yeah.
- 3:49Well, she was there.
- 3:51Yeah, yeah.
- 3:51I hope, I wish so too.
- 3:53It just would have been an epic battle
- 3:54for you guys.
- 3:55Yeah.
- 3:58So let's talk about it.
- 3:59I see, I think JR's in the chat.
- 4:03It would have been great to have.
- 4:05Yeah.
- 4:05So we prefer the hate is in the
- 4:07house.
- 4:11Yeah.
- 4:11You dominated, not dominate,
- 4:13McKenzie was a really good competition.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:18But when it came to the end of
- 4:19the weekend,
- 4:20Carolyn was putting you into the elite
- 4:22division with your scores and along the
- 4:26way figured out you would have finished in
- 4:27second.
- 4:28We confirmed that with Tyler.
- 4:30You would have finished second in the
- 4:31individual division.
- 4:33That's the second time in three years you
- 4:36did so well it was comparable to the
- 4:39elites.
- 4:42Were you given the option?
- 4:43Did you want the option?
- 4:45Let's clear that up.
- 4:47yeah that's a good question um i don't
- 4:50know that i was not given the option
- 4:52but it wasn't like an obvious this or
- 4:54that you know um it was more like
- 4:56hey you can do masters crucible again this
- 4:59year because i'd done masters two years
- 5:00ago and two years ago i do remember
- 5:03saying i'm i'm still elite i am still
- 5:05at the elite level i'm not going masters
- 5:07yet like i know i'm in the age
- 5:09bracket but it's like i'm not physically
- 5:11mentally like there yet so i'm just gonna
- 5:13stay elite as long as possible like stay
- 5:15in elite it's my new like
- 5:18like hashtag, whatever, but
- 5:20This year,
- 5:22it was more of a reach out of
- 5:23like, hey, you're going to,
- 5:24this is the dates for Crash Master,
- 5:26like Crucible's coming up.
- 5:27You want to do it?
- 5:28Here's the link.
- 5:29And so with, you know,
- 5:31having the team games and then the age
- 5:33group games and then doing,
- 5:35committing to the WFP team, I was like,
- 5:38you know what?
- 5:38I'm not going to be in like elite.
- 5:39I mean, I'll be in shape,
- 5:40but I'll be run down.
- 5:42I'll be hitting a wall.
- 5:43Like I should just stay in my little
- 5:46category of masters and
- 5:48just do well there and then yeah sure
- 5:50still try to put up some good times
- 5:51for the elite girls because i always like
- 5:52to try to do that um so it
- 5:58it wasn't like a yeah you could do
- 5:59either because then i did approach jr at
- 6:01the comp on the last day i'm like
- 6:02man jr you got me in the wrong
- 6:05division like i want to come out and
- 6:06play when can i come play with the
- 6:07big girls and he's like well you you
- 6:10could have and i was like well i
- 6:11didn't want to do a qualifier coming off
- 6:12of all the stuff i did in august
- 6:14i didn't want to do a qualifier and
- 6:16he's like well you wouldn't have had to
- 6:17because
- 6:18any team podium athlete automatically gets
- 6:21an invite.
- 6:22And I was like,
- 6:23you didn't tell me that.
- 6:25I wasn't aware of those rules.
- 6:26Like,
- 6:27so I think if I had known that
- 6:28and then seeing, you know, you know,
- 6:30the Mayhem girls signed up,
- 6:32team athlete girls signed up,
- 6:33Molly and Zoe.
- 6:34And so it's like, dang,
- 6:35I would have done it if they're doing
- 6:37it.
- 6:37Like they would have encouraged me for
- 6:38sure to,
- 6:39because I still think I'm their age or
- 6:41in their league.
- 6:42Right.
- 6:43So I probably would have maybe pushed to
- 6:45go more into the elite.
- 6:48So it was more of just an assumption
- 6:50that because you reached out and said,
- 6:52hey, we're doing it,
- 6:53you just kind of assumed it was the
- 6:55Masters and didn't even really look at it
- 6:58as an option.
- 6:59And then when you got there,
- 7:01kicking yourself a little bit.
- 7:03Yeah.
- 7:03I mean,
- 7:03I already knew I was going to rally
- 7:07or rival some people there,
- 7:10just knowing who was coming.
- 7:11I was like, I'm as good as them.
- 7:14Like,
- 7:14I'm going to put up some times to
- 7:15beat.
- 7:15So I already kind of knew that,
- 7:17but I was –
- 7:19I was comfortable, right.
- 7:20Doing masters versus yeah.
- 7:22Going into the elite.
- 7:23It's like, okay,
- 7:24you gotta get a little uncomfortable.
- 7:25Maybe it's a little more scary.
- 7:27It's less pressure for sure.
- 7:28Cause I already had a lot of pressure
- 7:29on me all through August.
- 7:30So I think I was just maybe choosing
- 7:32the less pressure route.
- 7:35So the big question is you put up
- 7:38these amazing times in the master's
- 7:40division without a lot of push at times,
- 7:43right?
- 7:44Um,
- 7:45do you think up against the elite girls,
- 7:49you would have had,
- 7:51you would have had more push and maybe
- 7:52even put up better times?
- 7:55Yeah, that's the, that's the question.
- 7:57I do think having more of a push.
- 8:00Yes.
- 8:01I would pick up the bar faster.
- 8:02I would transition faster.
- 8:03I'd see she's off on the run.
- 8:04I got to catch her on the run.
- 8:06It would hurt a lot more probably too.
- 8:08Right.
- 8:08Going even a little bit faster.
- 8:10Um,
- 8:11There were some workouts where I was like,
- 8:12yeah, I was hurting.
- 8:13I was kind of max capacity maybe.
- 8:15But then there's some where it's like,
- 8:17that wasn't that hard.
- 8:18Like I'm walking off.
- 8:18I'm fine.
- 8:20So in those cases, I'm like,
- 8:22if I had more of a push the
- 8:23whole way through and not just rounds one
- 8:25and two,
- 8:25because everybody comes out hot in the
- 8:27first round.
- 8:28Right.
- 8:29So it's like.
- 8:30Yes.
- 8:31Having that extra push.
- 8:32I know they're all going to go on
- 8:33broken on the double unders.
- 8:34I got to go on broken.
- 8:35You know, I would have,
- 8:36I think I could have put up faster
- 8:38times for sure.
- 8:40Yes.
- 8:41I,
- 8:41and I thrive off of competition and push.
- 8:45So I think it'd be a yes.
- 8:48So does this give you any differing
- 8:51outlook into the twenty six season?
- 8:56yeah reading some comments it's like you
- 8:59should try to go indie and i'm like
- 9:00well if not now when like yeah i'm
- 9:03only getting older but um the thoughts
- 9:07there but i'm kind of in the works
- 9:09of discussing team opportunities and and
- 9:13then the question is like would you rather
- 9:15you know win a championship title on a
- 9:18team potentially or just make indie games
- 9:23And yeah, just see how it goes.
- 9:25I don't know.
- 9:26Just be there.
- 9:27Right.
- 9:27And just compete, but you're not,
- 9:29you're not going to be,
- 9:30I don't think I'm going to be a
- 9:31top ten athlete at the games.
- 9:33It's different.
- 9:34Like Crash is a local comp.
- 9:35It's a big local comp,
- 9:36but it's not an international comp like
- 9:38the CrossFit Games.
- 9:39So, you know,
- 9:40put me up against those girls.
- 9:42Yeah, I would say it's a mid-major.
- 9:46Yeah.
- 9:47It's not the games,
- 9:49but it's not a local company more either
- 9:51by far, right?
- 9:52For sure.
- 9:53And I kind of compare it to college
- 9:55football.
- 9:56You have your Division I,
- 9:58that's the games,
- 10:00and Rogue and Waterpalooza,
- 10:03and then you have your mid-majors like
- 10:05Crash, Metcon Rush, those types of things,
- 10:08right,
- 10:08that have elevated themselves a little
- 10:10more than a local comp.
- 10:12Yeah.
- 10:14And Jer's done an outstanding job with all
- 10:15of that.
- 10:16For sure.
- 10:16The programming is beyond local comp
- 10:19status.
- 10:19It's just like,
- 10:21it's not international still.
- 10:22I mean, we did,
- 10:22there was one girl that flew in from
- 10:25Norway or something for crash.
- 10:29But other than that, you know,
- 10:29there's really good athletes all around
- 10:31the world.
- 10:31And that's always been the thing with me
- 10:32too.
- 10:32It's like, I know I'm like,
- 10:34good in North Carolina I'm good at my
- 10:36gym my local gym but then I never
- 10:38really knew how do I stack up
- 10:40internationally until I started doing like
- 10:42the Masters games and even just CrossFit
- 10:44games on team and then it's kind of
- 10:46cool to see it's like no like I'm
- 10:47pretty good worldwide like this is this is
- 10:50cool it's like another level unlocked um
- 10:53when you realize you're you're good
- 10:55outside of just your gym too
- 10:57so if people don't realize your team took
- 11:01third at the crossfit games you earned a
- 11:03bronze bronze medal to go with your master
- 11:07silver from last year and your master's
- 11:10gold from this year so now you have
- 11:13a gold a silver and a bronze yeah
- 11:15i got them all you my question to
- 11:17you is do you display them or are
- 11:20they sitting in a drawer somewhere
- 11:21yeah um no i was trying to figure
- 11:23out what to do with them because they
- 11:24are cool um and i did just move
- 11:27into a new house so it's they're packed
- 11:29in a box right now but i do
- 11:31want to get them out and do some
- 11:33kind of like shadow box maybe situation
- 11:35and put it in a garage gym uh
- 11:37but right now they're in they're in a
- 11:39moving box somewhere it's a new house does
- 11:42that mean you're getting a garage gym
- 11:44Uh, no,
- 11:45actually I had a great garage gym at
- 11:47my last house and the ceilings were even
- 11:48high enough to do ring muscle ups and
- 11:50bar muscle ups.
- 11:51And I had it all in there,
- 11:52but to be honest,
- 11:53I didn't use it much.
- 11:54I prefer going, you know,
- 11:56to my local box for sure.
- 11:58Um, but in a bind,
- 12:00it's nice to have a quick, easy,
- 12:02you know,
- 12:03location to be able to work out,
- 12:04but no, I don't have a garage here.
- 12:07I have a shed.
- 12:09Try to get like a barn situation going
- 12:10on.
- 12:11Um,
- 12:13But no,
- 12:14they probably won't go up in there either.
- 12:15They'll probably just stay in a box for
- 12:16a year.
- 12:18Unfortunately.
- 12:19Sorry.
- 12:21Apparently there's been some news that
- 12:22broke as we've been on the show.
- 12:25Semi-final locations and qualifying spots
- 12:27are out Masters too.
- 12:29And leaders already angry.
- 12:32JR says Masters will be in with the
- 12:35Indy and take money for the highest
- 12:37Masters finish and be eligible for Indy
- 12:40prize money, including event wins.
- 12:45waiting for a while.
- 12:49So it sounds like Masters can go to
- 12:51the Indy event,
- 12:53can earn prize money for being the highest
- 12:56finishing Masters athlete,
- 12:58and get prize money for event wins,
- 13:03and possibly qualify for the games.
- 13:05I'm taking a step there,
- 13:07and I'm trying to find the post or
- 13:11whatever I can.
- 13:12Oh, this is for Crucible next year.
- 13:15Oh, crash next year.
- 13:17He must be talking about that.
- 13:18Yeah.
- 13:18Yeah.
- 13:19He's going to combine it.
- 13:20Yeah.
- 13:21Ah, okay.
- 13:23Oh, okay.
- 13:25So that's kind of what,
- 13:27that's kind of what Carolyn said on our
- 13:29show.
- 13:30Um, so yeah, that's cool.
- 13:34So next year you don't have to make
- 13:35the decision.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:36The decision will be made for me for
- 13:37twenty twenty six crucible.
- 13:39Yeah.
- 13:39Oh, very cool.
- 13:40Yeah.
- 13:41So talking about something else,
- 13:45the in-person events are announced.
- 13:47I can't pull that up.
- 13:50We can talk about it if you care
- 13:52to.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:54The in-person events for the CrossFit
- 13:57Games semifinals.
- 13:59Oh, they're really already up.
- 14:02Wow.
- 14:03Yeah.
- 14:04Far East Throwdown is going to be in
- 14:07South Korea.
- 14:08Torium Pro.
- 14:13Europe and Africa are the French Slowdown,
- 14:15Rebel Renegade Games,
- 14:17and Mad Fitness Festival.
- 14:21North America East will have the Mayhem
- 14:23Classic.
- 14:24The Magic City Games.
- 14:28And that is,
- 14:29the Magic City Games is for Masters.
- 14:31Oh, okay.
- 14:33It qualifies three men and three women,
- 14:35thirty five to thirty nine and forty to
- 14:37forty four, two men and two women,
- 14:39forty five to forty nine and fifty fifty
- 14:41four and one man, one woman,
- 14:43fifty five plus.
- 14:48Cool syndicate crown will be back in
- 14:50Knoxville and it's going to have teams
- 14:53this year because three men, three women,
- 14:55three teams.
- 14:55That's awesome.
- 14:59and mayhem's three men three women instead
- 15:01of two from last year north america west
- 15:05legends championship is going to qualify
- 15:10two men two women and then three men
- 15:12and three women thirty five to thirty nine
- 15:14forty to forty four same as magic city
- 15:18yeah so two masters qualifying spots and
- 15:23nor cal classic is back with two men
- 15:25and two women
- 15:28and south america copasaur and latin
- 15:31masters so they're going to qualify
- 15:34masters in south america columbia nice
- 15:39cool that's neat you get so many
- 15:40opportunities to make the games you just
- 15:44travel around all the different places so
- 15:46that'll be nine spots qualified through in
- 15:49person and then what the remaining twenty
- 15:54one online yeah
- 16:00opportunities hot off the press yeah
- 16:06that's awesome is carolyn gonna make a run
- 16:09for uh indy again or she committing to
- 16:12the masters uh my guess is she'll probably
- 16:15try to do both again yeah yeah yeah
- 16:17yeah because you can might as well that's
- 16:18awesome
- 16:21Lita says it's fifteen spots live,
- 16:24fifteen online.
- 16:26I did not see.
- 16:27There must have been a Europe one I
- 16:28missed.
- 16:30Yep.
- 16:30French Throwdown.
- 16:33French Throwdown is doing three.
- 16:36So that's twelve.
- 16:41And Torium Pro is doing three.
- 16:44So it's fifteen.
- 16:45Okay.
- 16:46Okay.
- 16:49I think that's huge for the masters
- 16:50community.
- 16:51Yeah.
- 16:52That is neat.
- 16:53Um, to get in person.
- 16:55It's a, it's the start of something.
- 16:57Yeah.
- 16:58Um, yeah,
- 17:01we're trying to make the masters matter.
- 17:07Uh, JR syndicate,
- 17:08the only team qualifier in North America.
- 17:09See you in Knoxville.
- 17:11Yeah, you will.
- 17:14I'll be there.
- 17:17So,
- 17:18The reason I wanted to have you on
- 17:20in the first place,
- 17:20and we'll get back into some CrossFit
- 17:22stuff, but you're a registered dietitian.
- 17:26Yes.
- 17:26And you and I,
- 17:27after the competition sat down,
- 17:28we had a great conversation.
- 17:31And I really wanted to talk about that
- 17:33some more.
- 17:34And...
- 17:36my first question to you is what your
- 17:38registered dietitian we see nutrition
- 17:40stuff everywhere right what is the
- 17:42difference between a nutritionist and a
- 17:44dietitian oh thank you for asking um well
- 17:48dietitians are trying to take back the
- 17:51name nutritionist as well so now it's
- 17:54labeled as a registered dietitian
- 17:56nutritionist rdn um but what rdn or
- 18:01dietitian
- 18:03is or has to do to get that,
- 18:05I guess, certification or label.
- 18:09You do have to go through, well,
- 18:11now I think they're requiring a master's
- 18:13degree.
- 18:14in human nutrition.
- 18:15And then on top of that,
- 18:16you have to go through a national,
- 18:19like you have to do clinical rotations in
- 18:21a hospital setting, inpatient, outpatient.
- 18:24So you have to do like an internship
- 18:26essentially.
- 18:27So you do rotations in every unit in
- 18:28a hospital to get like the medical
- 18:31nutrition therapy side of it.
- 18:33There's also a bunch of coursework you
- 18:34have to take too.
- 18:34Like there's a whole like sheet of
- 18:37you have to take all these different
- 18:38classes and chemistry and organic
- 18:40chemistry and medical terminology and
- 18:42psychology and all these different courses
- 18:45and food science class where you like just
- 18:49bake cookies on like
- 18:51different colored pans or use different
- 18:52colored flour and baking so there's a
- 18:54whole like food science side of it too
- 18:56of like baking and cooking and being in
- 18:59like the food service industry um and then
- 19:01the medical side so being a dietitian you
- 19:03can be in a different a lot of
- 19:04different areas um but there's just a lot
- 19:06more education that goes into becoming a
- 19:08registered dietitian so after you do all
- 19:09your clinical rotations inpatient
- 19:11outpatient you then have to sit for a
- 19:13national board exam
- 19:16um and then if you pass that after
- 19:18you've done all the required coursework
- 19:19you've done all the internship rotation
- 19:21work you've passed the board exam then you
- 19:24get your license and then you're licensed
- 19:26in you can be licensed in whatever state
- 19:29you want but you have to have a
- 19:29different license you get a national
- 19:31provider identifier number um and then
- 19:34you're legally recognized to give
- 19:37nutrition advice make create meal plans um
- 19:40do all that but
- 19:42when you're just like a certification
- 19:44online, right?
- 19:45Not that that's nothing,
- 19:46like you still have to take a course,
- 19:48there's some education,
- 19:49but it might just be like a week
- 19:50long thing, maybe a thousand bucks.
- 19:53I don't know what people are paying,
- 19:55but not like a four year degree or
- 19:56anything in it.
- 19:58And they definitely don't give you the
- 19:59experience of being an inpatient with,
- 20:03you know,
- 20:03population working one-on-one with people
- 20:05that truly need like medical nutrition
- 20:09therapy and help.
- 20:09So I think the difference is more like
- 20:11there's a medical side to nutrition,
- 20:12the dietitians kind of deal with and know
- 20:14more about.
- 20:14And then there's just the like,
- 20:17eat your fruits and vegetables, macros,
- 20:21you know, kind of nutrition,
- 20:22which is still great.
- 20:23And like,
- 20:23there's nutrition timing for sports
- 20:26nutrition that I think some nutritionists
- 20:28that have these online certs through
- 20:30precision nutrition or whoever, um,
- 20:32know more about timing for nutrition with
- 20:35sports than like a dietician does that's
- 20:38working in the hospital.
- 20:39It's a different knowledge base too,
- 20:41you know?
- 20:42So I'm not saying it's necessary.
- 20:46Beautiful segue to my next question.
- 20:48Okay.
- 20:49And that is, um,
- 20:51as an athlete and someone who is trying
- 20:53to get their body to perform at its
- 20:56max capacity, um,
- 20:59we know that Greg back in the day
- 21:02started training MDs in CrossFit as,
- 21:05as a way to prevent illness instead of
- 21:09being retroactive and trying to get it on
- 21:13the backend.
- 21:14So for you as a dietitian going through
- 21:17school registered dietitian and being an
- 21:20athlete, were there,
- 21:21were there conflicts to that education and
- 21:24what you know as an athlete or did
- 21:27it pair up pretty well?
- 21:29Oh, that's a good question.
- 21:30It was just different.
- 21:31Like I didn't learn a ton of sports
- 21:33nutrition in school at all.
- 21:37And so, yeah, there's,
- 21:39there's some things I kind of disagree
- 21:41with or like you can choose to get
- 21:43your continuing education credits and like
- 21:46more integrative nutrition too.
- 21:48So if you want to kind of go
- 21:49more of like a natural therapy kind of
- 21:51route versus the medication side to it
- 21:55and,
- 21:57um but i would say it's just different
- 22:00i don't think there was too much
- 22:01conflicting because there's still some
- 22:03really good um like nutrition sports
- 22:05handbooks written by some dietitians that
- 22:10talk about timing of you know doing your
- 22:12carbs and protein and amounts and
- 22:14electrolytes and that all pretty much
- 22:16lines up with
- 22:18you know, what we would,
- 22:19the basics that you would learn in school
- 22:21with nutrient timing and,
- 22:23and how much to do based off body
- 22:26weight and things like that.
- 22:29Yeah.
- 22:29Meredith is in the chat and she said,
- 22:32so a nutritionist has a medical license.
- 22:34I think it's the opposite, right?
- 22:35Right.
- 22:36Dietitians have a national provider
- 22:39identifier number,
- 22:40which I guess is a medical license in
- 22:43a way.
- 22:44I mean,
- 22:44I can't dietitians can't prescribe
- 22:47medications or GLP ones or anything like
- 22:51that.
- 22:53How have GLP ones affected your day to
- 22:55day?
- 22:57Oh, it's a little frustrating.
- 22:59Cause you know,
- 23:00it's the whole idea is to suppress
- 23:02people's appetite and they'll eat less.
- 23:06Are you talking about how like me working
- 23:07with people on GLP ones?
- 23:08Yeah.
- 23:09And so my big thing is, um,
- 23:11Most people I work with from a weight
- 23:13loss standpoint or fat loss standpoint,
- 23:17they don't eat a lot.
- 23:18They eat one meal a day.
- 23:20They're not eating much.
- 23:21And so just suppress their appetite
- 23:22further.
- 23:22What are you going to go to like
- 23:24half a meal a day?
- 23:24Like that's not going to help you.
- 23:26And then they're losing right.
- 23:27A lot of muscle mass,
- 23:28water weight initially,
- 23:29if they get that big drop.
- 23:30So obviously you want to,
- 23:33you don't want to lose muscle.
- 23:35Um, so, um,
- 23:36My thing is I encourage people to actually
- 23:38eat more,
- 23:39just more of the right things that will
- 23:41help them maintain and build that lean
- 23:44muscle mass,
- 23:44that metabolically active tissue that we
- 23:46want.
- 23:48So it's been a little frustrating because
- 23:49people want to go on that and eat
- 23:51less,
- 23:51even less than they're already eating.
- 23:53And I'm trying to get them to actually
- 23:54eat a little bit more and eat closer
- 23:56to their basal metabolic rate or a little
- 23:58bit higher so their metabolism doesn't
- 24:00start to slow down and they go into
- 24:01conservation mode.
- 24:03So I want them and like,
- 24:04I want to lower the cortisol because your
- 24:05body gets stressed when it's not eating
- 24:07enough as well.
- 24:08Like that's a stress on your body.
- 24:09So trying to get people to kind of
- 24:11do the opposite,
- 24:12but it does help the GLP ones help
- 24:14kind of silence the food chatter.
- 24:17So I have several individuals I'm working
- 24:19with that are on GLP ones and
- 24:22as long as they can acknowledge like the
- 24:23food chatter is going to be kind of
- 24:25turned off and now we're just eating for
- 24:26nutrition and fuel and micronutrients and
- 24:30longevity and immune system function.
- 24:33Like we're eating for all these benefits.
- 24:35Um,
- 24:36so we're going to eat the right foods
- 24:37that help kind of support those things and
- 24:39eat enough.
- 24:39And it's almost like, yeah,
- 24:41in a way you're kind of force feeding
- 24:43yourself to eat,
- 24:44but you're forcing yourself the right
- 24:45things that are going to be helping your
- 24:46metabolism, helping lower cortisol, um,
- 24:49Um,
- 24:50so it is a little bit of a
- 24:51battle,
- 24:51but if you can kind of create structure
- 24:53to people's eating and like have these,
- 24:55I call them like regular established
- 24:57eating intervals set throughout the day
- 24:59and just kind of just like structure,
- 25:00like you would plan your day,
- 25:02like you're going to plan your meals,
- 25:03plan how much protein you're going to be
- 25:04getting in and fiber.
- 25:05So at the end of the day,
- 25:06you can kind of hit these numbers and
- 25:08kind of get you out of that huge
- 25:10deficit, um,
- 25:11that isn't contributing or benefiting you
- 25:14really long-term.
- 25:16you ever try to advise people not to
- 25:18use the glp ones or do you is
- 25:21that out of your purview yeah um not
- 25:27really i don't i think initially i was
- 25:30kind of against them a lot but i've
- 25:32seen some people get some decent results
- 25:34on they you know got some side effects
- 25:36initially but i can see if if they
- 25:39will do the work that i'm telling them
- 25:40to do while they're on it and they
- 25:43can do it safely and
- 25:45then I don't have any major hangups with
- 25:48it right now.
- 25:50And we don't really know full side effects
- 25:53because it's so new.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55Yeah.
- 25:56There is some unknowns for sure.
- 25:59Jonathan Ortega,
- 26:00my food talks to me often.
- 26:03Yes, Jonathan.
- 26:05Uh, so train olive asks, uh,
- 26:08does Carolyn work in an,
- 26:09as an RD in a hospital setting?
- 26:11And I know this answer cause we talked
- 26:12about it at the age group games.
- 26:16What does your,
- 26:17you can answer that question.
- 26:18And then what does a typical day look
- 26:20like for you?
- 26:21Okay.
- 26:23Um, no,
- 26:23I do not work in a hospital setting
- 26:25anymore.
- 26:25That was a long time ago.
- 26:27I did that.
- 26:27Um, but now I'm more, um,
- 26:30did some like outpatient stuff previously
- 26:32like an allergy immunology clinic going
- 26:35into an office setting but now currently
- 26:37my day-to-day i work hundred percent
- 26:40remote and see clients through like zoom
- 26:42calls um i do take insurance which is
- 26:45helpful for a lot of people um but
- 26:47it's all kind of it's all remote so
- 26:50a typical day um i'll wake up in
- 26:53the morning decently early if i want to
- 26:55try to get into the gym first but
- 26:57like
- 26:57I'll go do my training session for at
- 26:58least like an hour, hour and a half,
- 27:00come back, log on,
- 27:02start taking calls for a few hours,
- 27:04maybe three or four hours.
- 27:06And then I'll try to have a lunch
- 27:07break,
- 27:08go back to the gym for maybe another
- 27:10hour and a half, maybe two,
- 27:11depending on the day.
- 27:12And then I'll take some evening calls
- 27:14again.
- 27:15So I do kind of block my schedule
- 27:16and treat my time in the gym as
- 27:19work as well,
- 27:20because I think this past year has kind
- 27:21of
- 27:23proven that it is kind of work for
- 27:24me i am making money doing crossfit now
- 27:26so um i do treat my my days
- 27:30as like this is part of my work
- 27:31schedule is getting in the gym um and
- 27:33then i come back and and take client
- 27:35calls from anywhere from like two p.m
- 27:38three p.m to like six thirty p.m um
- 27:43say i'm just back and forth gym home
- 27:45computer please tell me you live close to
- 27:48the gym
- 27:49I lived closer.
- 27:50I'm now like twelve, fifteen minutes away,
- 27:53which is close.
- 27:54Some people, I think,
- 27:55drive a lot further for the gym, right?
- 27:56Like thirty minutes.
- 27:57So, yeah,
- 27:58I'd say fifteen minutes isn't bad, right?
- 28:00No, no.
- 28:02So that's a pretty busy pack day.
- 28:04What do you do?
- 28:05What do you do to get away and
- 28:08to just have time for yourself?
- 28:11Or is that gym time that?
- 28:13Yeah, that's a good question.
- 28:15I think the gym time can definitely be
- 28:17that for me.
- 28:19And outside of that,
- 28:21I like to use weekends because I don't
- 28:23work weekends.
- 28:24I never work weekends.
- 28:25It's been my rule on Monday through Friday
- 28:27kind of person.
- 28:28And then Saturday, Sunday,
- 28:29like I took a trip up to Boone,
- 28:31North Carolina,
- 28:32the Blue Ridge mountains nearby just to
- 28:35get away and like do something different
- 28:37to outside the gym.
- 28:37Like go hiking.
- 28:38My friend came up,
- 28:38we went for a good hour,
- 28:40two hour hike.
- 28:41That was fun.
- 28:42Might drop into a gym there just to,
- 28:44see some different faces,
- 28:45meet some different people,
- 28:46make some new friends.
- 28:47And that's always fun too.
- 28:49Um,
- 28:49so I think taking like weekend trips and
- 28:51just taking my weekends off,
- 28:53that's kind of my like recharge reset.
- 28:55And then I can kind of hit the
- 28:57ground running for another week.
- 29:00So, so back into,
- 29:02to CrossFit a little bit,
- 29:03you teamed up with Stevie,
- 29:05Stevie with a crash last year,
- 29:08you guys finished like first and second
- 29:09last year, right at crash.
- 29:11So I didn't do crash last year.
- 29:12Oh, she won.
- 29:14Okay.
- 29:15But yeah, I gotcha.
- 29:17So I did it the year before one.
- 29:20Then I was out of the country or
- 29:22went somewhere.
- 29:22Couldn't make it.
- 29:23So she did it.
- 29:25She won.
- 29:25And then this year, J.R.
- 29:27was trying to pin us against each other.
- 29:30And she ended up injuring her wrist pretty
- 29:33good right after the team games.
- 29:35So we never have actually competed against
- 29:37each other.
- 29:39And that's going to be a uproar the
- 29:41day we do.
- 29:42It'll be interesting.
- 29:43Is she always going to be your teammate?
- 29:45Yeah.
- 29:46Teammates for life.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:47Yeah.
- 29:48We just, we mesh really well together.
- 29:49We balance each other out.
- 29:52We're not jealous or competitive with each
- 29:54other, which is, you know,
- 29:55kind of rare with women.
- 29:57So we truly just like want each other
- 29:59to do really well.
- 30:01And even with like,
- 30:02I told someone this the other day going,
- 30:04she was originally supposed to do the
- 30:05masters CrossFit games and
- 30:07And I was super excited.
- 30:08I talked her into doing it.
- 30:09I'm like, you got to do it.
- 30:10Like you won,
- 30:10you basically won semifinals for masters.
- 30:12Like you're going to win the games and
- 30:13I'm going to help you do it.
- 30:14Like,
- 30:14if you want me to get in between
- 30:16you and someone else that you get into
- 30:18first and I can take second or third,
- 30:19like, I don't care.
- 30:19Like, I think you could win the games.
- 30:22Like, I don't know if I could,
- 30:23but I know you could do it.
- 30:24Like I was so pumping her up,
- 30:25just like,
- 30:26I want you to win the games and
- 30:28I'll help you do it.
- 30:29Um, so yeah, she's a good teammate,
- 30:33good person.
- 30:34I love her and I want her to,
- 30:36I want her to win.
- 30:38I think Carolyn just took down receipts.
- 30:39Yeah.
- 30:44Um,
- 30:44so the reason I asked that is you
- 30:48had like Taylor Williamson and Andrea, uh,
- 30:50who stayed together as teammates their
- 30:53whole career.
- 30:54Yeah.
- 30:54Because they just got along well,
- 30:56they worked together well.
- 30:58And, and I, it,
- 30:59you and Stevie had this seem to have
- 31:01that same vibe, uh,
- 31:02yeah for sure i think that's a good
- 31:04comparison we're a good kind of dynamic
- 31:06duo we balance each other out we get
- 31:09along well i've never had an issue with
- 31:11stevie anything from something stupid
- 31:14petty to anything big like we've never had
- 31:17any issues um we can kind of calm
- 31:21each other down remind each other what the
- 31:22workouts are make sure we're both eating
- 31:25good i don't know like yeah we just
- 31:27and we
- 31:28And I think our strengths and weaknesses
- 31:29kind of balance out.
- 31:30Like I've always been more of like an
- 31:32endurance cardio.
- 31:34I can do all the burpees.
- 31:34I can do more calories on the bike.
- 31:36Like I can push harder on kind of
- 31:37those things.
- 31:38And then she's had more of the strength
- 31:39side.
- 31:39Like she's just naturally super strong.
- 31:42Doesn't need to wear a belt or lifters
- 31:44for anything ever.
- 31:45Knee sleeves.
- 31:46No, she doesn't do any of that.
- 31:47And she's still clean and jerking like two
- 31:49forty five snatching one ninety.
- 31:51Like she's got a bigger snatch than one
- 31:53ninety.
- 31:53But yeah.
- 31:55She's she's just strong.
- 31:56So I always rely on her to like,
- 31:57all right, you get those extra like ten,
- 31:58fifteen pounds on the lift and I'll do
- 32:00what I can, you know,
- 32:00on the other stuff.
- 32:03So I'm slowly trying to catch up to
- 32:04her,
- 32:04but she definitely encourages me to just
- 32:05like get stronger.
- 32:06And she's working on her running and she's
- 32:08gotten so much better on those ends, too.
- 32:10So we're both trying to like fill our
- 32:12little holes.
- 32:13But like we do balance each other really
- 32:14well and we're both consistent.
- 32:17What was your athletic background before
- 32:19CrossFit?
- 32:20Um,
- 32:21I tried to play every single sport I
- 32:23could growing up.
- 32:24I started with like soccer running out,
- 32:26like going the wrong way,
- 32:28scoring for the other team.
- 32:29But it was just like something running
- 32:30around playing something,
- 32:31but played soccer.
- 32:33And then like middle school was a lot
- 32:36of volleyball, basketball, soccer,
- 32:38swim team.
- 32:39And then high school kind of dwindled down
- 32:42to just basketball, volleyball.
- 32:44And then I kind of just focused on
- 32:45volleyball in my senior year,
- 32:47thought about trying to play in college,
- 32:49but didn't end up playing.
- 32:50I just did some like club volleyball in
- 32:52college, but.
- 32:55always wanted to just be active and run
- 32:56and jump and do all the things try
- 32:59everything i told all my friends like if
- 33:01you ever go for a walk like call
- 33:02me if you want to go hiking call
- 33:03me if you want to go swimming let
- 33:04me know if you want to go kayaking
- 33:06like i'm around so it's like whatever's
- 33:09going on if you can be active and
- 33:11move and be outside i would want in
- 33:14on that bike ride yeah
- 33:16yeah, when I was in,
- 33:17when I was in high school, I,
- 33:18I was a four sport athlete and I
- 33:21did every intramural sport.
- 33:22Like, cause I just,
- 33:24I just wanted to be active when I
- 33:25was younger.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:26And, uh,
- 33:28When I got to college,
- 33:30they had intramurals there.
- 33:31And I was like, well,
- 33:32I did that in high school.
- 33:32I'll do it here.
- 33:33And what you don't realize is like the
- 33:36people playing intramural sports at
- 33:37college are like some of the best people.
- 33:40Yeah.
- 33:42Like I wrestled intramural in college at a
- 33:46college that was top five in the country.
- 33:49So the people that didn't make the team
- 33:51were really, really good.
- 33:52Yeah.
- 33:53And I was like pinned in ten seconds.
- 33:57Yeah, it's true.
- 33:58The intramural sports are no joke at
- 34:00college.
- 34:01Yeah.
- 34:02For sure.
- 34:03Yeah.
- 34:04We're not,
- 34:04we can't all be at Carolyn Prevost level,
- 34:06but.
- 34:07Right.
- 34:08Right.
- 34:09Yeah.
- 34:10It still amazes me.
- 34:11Like she's won.
- 34:13Twelve national championships.
- 34:15That's insane.
- 34:15In five different sports.
- 34:18She is an athlete.
- 34:19She's a definition of an athlete for sure.
- 34:22Yeah.
- 34:23Yeah.
- 34:24She is amazing.
- 34:24So, um,
- 34:27can't remember.
- 34:28So what, why mayhem?
- 34:31Oh, um, well,
- 34:33I never really had a coach or followed
- 34:35anything in particular.
- 34:37Um,
- 34:40The person that runs my gym,
- 34:41Kevin Steinhaus,
- 34:42the Grit House in Charlotte,
- 34:43North Carolina.
- 34:44He does some good programming, though,
- 34:46and he would put together like Grit Train
- 34:48for like extra programming.
- 34:49So I started following some of that and
- 34:50definitely got better.
- 34:52He would write weights down that would
- 34:53scare me,
- 34:53like start cycling the seventy pound
- 34:55dumbbell.
- 34:55And I was like, what?
- 34:56No, I can't do this.
- 34:57And now try the eighty pound dumbbell.
- 34:59Like he just writes down things that I
- 35:01don't think I can do,
- 35:02but I know he wouldn't write it if
- 35:03he didn't think, you know,
- 35:05I could do it.
- 35:06so i followed a lot of the stuff
- 35:07got got good fast like i got better
- 35:10for sure because of his programming and
- 35:12his class workouts i would just do class
- 35:14and then in twenty twenty two when i
- 35:18first went team with stevie she was a
- 35:21mayhem um well she had been her gym
- 35:23in morganton north carolina has always
- 35:26been a mayhem affiliate like follows me in
- 35:29programming and
- 35:30So her and the other guy on my
- 35:32team in two and two were both mayhem
- 35:33athletes.
- 35:34And so I kind of got exposed a
- 35:35little bit there and then we would want
- 35:36to share like workouts and what'd you get
- 35:38on this and what workout are you doing
- 35:39today?
- 35:40So she would share some stuff,
- 35:41but then not until two and two and
- 35:43three,
- 35:43when we were at semifinals for team,
- 35:45I think that we officially get hooked up.
- 35:48I say we, as in like me, Kevin,
- 35:50that was on my team at the time,
- 35:51the guy, Josh, and then Stevie,
- 35:53we got officially in with mayhem through
- 35:55Stevie, like making the connection.
- 35:57with the people at the booth at the
- 35:58semifinals in Orlando.
- 36:00And so we're like, hey,
- 36:02we'd like to be like a Mayhem team.
- 36:03And like,
- 36:03if we could come out and train with
- 36:05the Mayhem team at least once before the
- 36:07games,
- 36:07because we qualified for the games in two
- 36:09and three.
- 36:10So we started getting programming from
- 36:12them and then ended up taking a trip
- 36:15to Cookeville for a long weekend and
- 36:18training against like Angelo.
- 36:19And I think it was when Kyra was
- 36:21on the team, Kyra, Zoe and Sam.
- 36:25So got to go up against them,
- 36:26see their training facility,
- 36:27which is amazing.
- 36:28And so ever since then,
- 36:30we've just kind of been locked into
- 36:31mayhem.
- 36:32And I like,
- 36:34I do like the volume that mayhem puts
- 36:36out, but you definitely need to be,
- 36:37you know,
- 36:37volume acclimatized and trained to not
- 36:40kill yourself, but, um, it's challenging.
- 36:43It's good.
- 36:43And then I kind of pick and choose
- 36:45pieces.
- 36:45I see either from the grit house or
- 36:48other people post online,
- 36:49a good workout that has ring muscle ups
- 36:51and I know I need it.
- 36:52So I'll kind of incorporate a little bit
- 36:54of that might replace one of the main
- 36:56pieces that day, but.
- 36:58I think Mayhem does a really good job
- 36:59with structuring their programming so they
- 37:02kind of get a little bit of everything.
- 37:04And there's intention behind their pieces
- 37:06and what you're
- 37:08focus should be or what your rpe should
- 37:11be that day and and how hard you
- 37:13should push or how you should break this
- 37:14up or what the goal should be to
- 37:16break it up and then what you actually
- 37:17do you know comes down to the game
- 37:19time moment but target times i like to
- 37:21have those um so they give you target
- 37:24times times to to beat and time caps
- 37:26right to stop but
- 37:28Yeah.
- 37:28Name's been good in there and they're just
- 37:30good to their athletes too.
- 37:31Like every semifinal I've been to or
- 37:34games,
- 37:34they put together like a little package
- 37:36for you of stuff and just make you
- 37:38feel special.
- 37:38And then.
- 37:39hey,
- 37:39we're here for you if you need coaching
- 37:40strategies.
- 37:42Here's some gummy bears and like Rice
- 37:43Krispie treats.
- 37:44Like make sure you're eating carbs.
- 37:45And here's like this year at the Masters
- 37:47Games, you know,
- 37:48they had a little cold plunge pool and
- 37:50the Norma Tech like compression boots and
- 37:52a whole recovery lounge for their
- 37:55athletes.
- 37:55So they do, they make you feel special,
- 37:57give you some cool stuff.
- 38:00So they've been really good.
- 38:01I can't compare them to anybody else.
- 38:02I haven't really, like I said,
- 38:03never really had a coach or another,
- 38:06camp that I was going under,
- 38:07but I've really enjoyed working with
- 38:08mayhem and I'm all mayhem now.
- 38:12I know you found CrossFit through a
- 38:14Groupon.
- 38:14Oh yeah.
- 38:15Which is not, it's not a weird story.
- 38:18I've heard it a handful of times.
- 38:20Right.
- 38:21But it,
- 38:22it took you a long time from graduating
- 38:25high school,
- 38:26being a volleyball player and playing club
- 38:27sport to the CrossFit time.
- 38:30What were you doing in the,
- 38:31in the space in between?
- 38:32Yeah.
- 38:32Yeah.
- 38:33I was going to a regular gym,
- 38:37like a Planet Fit, not a Planet Fitness,
- 38:39but something like a regular gym and kind
- 38:41of got into like the idea I wanted
- 38:43to do bodybuilding and maybe do a show.
- 38:46But then I was like,
- 38:48I don't want to walk around on a
- 38:49stage in heels and a bikini and flex
- 38:51my muscles.
- 38:52Like that sounds terrible.
- 38:53I don't really want to do that,
- 38:54but I want to look like I'm a
- 38:55bodybuilder.
- 38:56I want to like get that physique and
- 38:57like look good.
- 38:58And then I realized you're just like in
- 39:00the gym for hours,
- 39:01just doing like boring super sets of
- 39:03things and eating like chicken rice and
- 39:05broccoli.
- 39:06I'm like, this isn't fun.
- 39:08And so I would try to throw in
- 39:09like,
- 39:10burpees and then i'd go over new bench
- 39:12press and then i'd do deadlifts and then
- 39:14i would do some wall balls or then
- 39:16i would try to do a handstand like
- 39:17so i was just doing some random stuff
- 39:20for all through grad school so another
- 39:22like four years and i think towards the
- 39:24end of grad school um
- 39:27I've had people ask me, like,
- 39:28what box do you go to?
- 39:29I'm like, what's a box?
- 39:30And they're like, CrossFit.
- 39:31Where do you go to?
- 39:32Where do you do CrossFit?
- 39:33Like, I don't do CrossFit.
- 39:35But I think I already was starting to
- 39:36kind of build that, like,
- 39:37physique of maybe a CrossFit athlete.
- 39:38I don't know.
- 39:39So I was like, no,
- 39:40I don't really know what CrossFit is.
- 39:42I don't do that.
- 39:43That's a cult.
- 39:44Yeah.
- 39:45So then,
- 39:46but then I found that Groupon and there
- 39:49was a guy that I was interested in
- 39:52getting to know and he went to this
- 39:54CrossFit gym, right?
- 39:55So I was like, oh,
- 39:56I'm going to go do CrossFit.
- 39:57Yeah.
- 39:58So I bought that Groupon,
- 39:59went every day that month,
- 40:01ended up really liking it and realizing
- 40:02that there's skills that you can build on
- 40:04it.
- 40:04So it's not as boring.
- 40:05It's just like going into a gym,
- 40:07kind of doing the same routine,
- 40:08tricep extensions, bicep curl,
- 40:09whatever it is,
- 40:10but like
- 40:11had more of a focus on like you
- 40:13can get better and more efficient and like
- 40:14learn these skills i had no idea how
- 40:16to do a handstand push-up or kip or
- 40:19olympic lift like yeah it was a lot
- 40:22of new stuff for me i'm watching some
- 40:23old videos and just laughing at some of
- 40:27the form you know things that you you
- 40:28did back then but yeah so in between
- 40:31there's just going i'd still go to the
- 40:32gym every day for about an hour to
- 40:34two um
- 40:37and then yeah i would play volleyball on
- 40:39the weekends with friends pickleball
- 40:41whatever group almost saving lives back in
- 40:44the day for sure it still is actually
- 40:47yeah um so you're back to your dietitian
- 40:53nutrition yeah bodybuilding is awful about
- 40:57nutrition yeah like
- 41:00I worked security for the Arnold and my
- 41:03job was to escort the physique models from
- 41:07the dressing room area to the stage.
- 41:10They're so dehydrated.
- 41:13They don't even know what direction
- 41:15they're walking in.
- 41:17It's like herding cats.
- 41:19Yeah, that's awful.
- 41:20And I realized that quickly.
- 41:21I'm like, this is not for me.
- 41:23I don't want to be...
- 41:25Yeah.
- 41:26Sick, dehydrated, malnourished,
- 41:29micronutrient deficient.
- 41:30So with CrossFit, I realized like, hey,
- 41:32I'm eating for performance now.
- 41:34And I mean, for fuel.
- 41:35I mean,
- 41:35for my health and eating to feel good.
- 41:38And that's a whole different way of
- 41:39eating.
- 41:40Yeah.
- 41:40Then bodybuilding and eating for
- 41:42aesthetic.
- 41:43I mean,
- 41:43I have a better physique and aesthetics
- 41:46than I ever did trying to do bodybuilding.
- 41:48by just fueling performance and putting in
- 41:50like giving myself enough energy to put in
- 41:52hard enough work to get the results I
- 41:55want in my physique, if that makes sense,
- 41:58which is much more freeing and enjoyable
- 42:01way to live.
- 42:02So about the gummy bears and the rice
- 42:05crispy treats, is there any, like,
- 42:08do you think that's a necessity as an
- 42:10athlete or do you see some pieces of
- 42:14that that aren't necessarily good?
- 42:16Yeah.
- 42:17Yeah, that's a great question.
- 42:20I don't think it is a necessity.
- 42:22Um, well, as an athlete,
- 42:25I think it depends on what level you're
- 42:27competing at, right?
- 42:28Like if you're just trying to get in
- 42:30quick carbs after an event to recover for
- 42:33another event, that's where like,
- 42:35you know,
- 42:35scooping dextrose powders with some like
- 42:39whey protein, getting it in,
- 42:40just getting it in quick for recovery,
- 42:43muscle cells, like absorbing all that.
- 42:45Um,
- 42:46and that's where the idea of like, yeah,
- 42:48gummy bears and rice crispy treats come in
- 42:51just to immediately get those carbs in.
- 42:52Cause it's harder to sit there and eat
- 42:53a sweet potato and wild rice and quinoa
- 42:55and like the things that you should be
- 42:57eating the other, the other, the other,
- 42:58the other, the other, the other,
- 42:59the other, the other, the other,
- 43:00the other, the other, the other,
- 43:01the other, the other, the other,
- 43:02the other, the other, the other,
- 43:02the other, the other, the other,
- 43:04the other, the other, the other,
- 43:04the other, the other, the other,
- 43:05the other, the other, the other,
- 43:06the other, the other, the other,
- 43:07the other, the other, the other,
- 43:08the other, the other, the other,
- 43:09the other, the other, the other,
- 43:11the other, the other, the other,
- 43:12the other, the other, the other,
- 43:13the other, the other, the other,
- 43:14the other, the other, the other,
- 43:14the other, the other,
- 43:15the
- 43:17I guess this year I did do more
- 43:19gummies,
- 43:20like right before going out to stuff.
- 43:23But I would do just like...
- 43:24Before anybody clicks that,
- 43:25she means the natural,
- 43:27just the regular gummies.
- 43:29Yeah.
- 43:29Like for carbs.
- 43:30Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:31Yeah.
- 43:32Not like the... Yeah.
- 43:34People are getting bought for.
- 43:36No, I wouldn't do those.
- 43:38But I would do just like rice cakes
- 43:39and a banana and...
- 43:43fig fig newton bar kind of situations so
- 43:46things that seem like a little more
- 43:49nourishing than just gummy bears and
- 43:51pure sugar, drinking sugar.
- 43:53But now I am realizing like it is
- 43:56necessary for me at my level to recover
- 43:58quicker and feel better faster and not hit
- 44:02a wall.
- 44:03Sometimes I'm just drinking sugar.
- 44:05Now I mix it.
- 44:06I'm starting to get into some like first
- 44:08form supplements that have like the
- 44:10electrolytes and carbs in one.
- 44:13And that definitely helps.
- 44:14You can tell a difference in a workout
- 44:15for sure.
- 44:18CrossFit.
- 44:19God, I love Fig Newton's.
- 44:20Yeah, they're underrated.
- 44:22Nobody talks about them.
- 44:24Top five sweet things in my life.
- 44:27If I need something sweet,
- 44:28I want a Fig Newton.
- 44:29Yeah.
- 44:30And I probably only buy them once every
- 44:32two years.
- 44:34Yeah.
- 44:34They're out there, though.
- 44:35Just go get one.
- 44:36Go get you some.
- 44:40I have some follow-ups,
- 44:40but I want to train Olive.
- 44:42With double sessions,
- 44:44does Caroline track macros or have daily
- 44:46calorie goals?
- 44:47Yeah, I do.
- 44:49I like to track.
- 44:51I'm a tracker.
- 44:52Um, and it does,
- 44:53I mostly track to make sure I'm eating
- 44:54enough.
- 44:56Cause that is,
- 44:56that becomes the issue for me is,
- 44:58am I feeling myself enough?
- 45:00Um,
- 45:01and getting in enough before the training
- 45:02session.
- 45:03Cause like I've bonked and workouts and
- 45:05hit walls way too soon.
- 45:06And it is miserable trying to finish a
- 45:08workout when you've hit a wall.
- 45:10Um, and it's,
- 45:11it's been because of under fueling for me.
- 45:14So I do like to track and, um,
- 45:18I'll do a plug for the app I
- 45:19like.
- 45:19It's not MyFitnessPal,
- 45:21but there's a great tracking app that I
- 45:23kind of convert everybody to and a lot
- 45:24of my clients to called Cronometer.
- 45:25It's C-R-O-N-O-M-E-T-E-R.
- 45:29And their free version is great.
- 45:31They have the scanning function on there
- 45:33that I think MyFitnessPal now charges for.
- 45:35So the free one's good.
- 45:36There's just some ads,
- 45:37but outside of just macros, protein,
- 45:40carbs, fats, right?
- 45:41You can,
- 45:42they do a really good job with their
- 45:43micronutrient breakdown.
- 45:45So you can see if you're getting all
- 45:46the different vitamins and minerals you
- 45:48need.
- 45:48If you're hitting your fiber goal,
- 45:49calcium, zinc, iron, B vitamins, I mean,
- 45:53literally everything.
- 45:53And then even from the protein section,
- 45:55they make sure you're hitting all the
- 45:57different amino acids.
- 45:58So you can see if you're hitting the
- 45:59essential amino acids and you're getting
- 46:01the ones that contribute,
- 46:01you're getting enough leucine, isoleucine,
- 46:03valine.
- 46:04that contribute towards like muscle
- 46:05building whatever your goals are um so
- 46:08that's cool to see especially if you're
- 46:09more maybe like plant-based and you think
- 46:11you're getting enough protein in but then
- 46:12you
- 46:13scan your foods in for the day and
- 46:14you enter everything in at the end of
- 46:15the day it tracks it for you right
- 46:17and you can see you're not getting all
- 46:18your essential amino acids in um so it's
- 46:21just it's a cool tool to be able
- 46:23to use it doesn't have to be forever
- 46:25but if you have a specific thing you're
- 46:27training for or trying to a specific goal
- 46:29that you're trying to reach or just to
- 46:31optimize your health you can see trends to
- 46:34and get like weekly averages of oh i'm
- 46:36I'm really low in zinc all the time
- 46:38and vitamin C so it's like okay let's
- 46:40focus on some foods that are high in
- 46:41zinc and vitamin C or maybe you need
- 46:43to get a supplement um so I think
- 46:45it's it's really useful and I'm I nerd
- 46:47out on it so at the end of
- 46:48the day I like to see what am
- 46:49I you know what did I miss oh
- 46:51I got in that you can scan supplements
- 46:53in so if I'm taking my vitamin D
- 46:55supplement and K-two right it's like all
- 46:57right I'm gonna log that make sure that
- 46:59that bar is green now instead of being
- 47:01empty so
- 47:02I do track long, long answer to that,
- 47:05but I like tracking.
- 47:06It's helpful.
- 47:07And I feel better when I do it.
- 47:13Back on the Fig Newton.
- 47:14Is it a cookie, a cake?
- 47:16Who knows?
- 47:16Fig Newtons.
- 47:18Who cares?
- 47:18Yeah.
- 47:19Who cares?
- 47:19It's good.
- 47:22So follow up I had for you is.
- 47:25So I,
- 47:26I started CrossFit at five hundred and
- 47:28thirty pounds.
- 47:30I get down to two hundred sixty.
- 47:33And I'm loving life,
- 47:34but I was feeling like lethargic in the
- 47:37gym.
- 47:39And then I'm watching all these videos.
- 47:41I'm a nerd.
- 47:42I'm geeking out, watching Rich Froning,
- 47:44watching Matt Fraser, all the stuff.
- 47:48And you see them eating in a way
- 47:51that's not really designed for someone
- 47:53like me.
- 47:54Right.
- 47:55And so you think at the time, well,
- 47:57they're a CrossFitter.
- 47:58I'm a CrossFitter.
- 48:00I should do what they're doing.
- 48:01And then everything gets out of whack.
- 48:04And then I get injured and now I'm
- 48:06not able to work out like I was.
- 48:08And everything kind of blows up in my
- 48:11face.
- 48:12What do you,
- 48:13do you work with other CrossFitters that
- 48:15like go through things like this or,
- 48:17or are you pretty much just general pop?
- 48:22Um,
- 48:23I would say actually now I am maybe
- 48:25fifty percent of my clients are CrossFit
- 48:28CrossFitters or go to a local CrossFit gym
- 48:31here in Charlotte.
- 48:32Like I'm almost seeing the entire gym,
- 48:34which is awesome.
- 48:35Just like word of mouth.
- 48:36And so I'm helping them.
- 48:37But like your situation is.
- 48:40yeah that's that's tough because yeah
- 48:42you're looking up to these people and you
- 48:44want to be like them and like compete
- 48:46like them and look like them and you
- 48:48see them eating pizzas and things like
- 48:49that which i understand like post-comp you
- 48:52want to have like a cheat meal right
- 48:53because you've been eating good maybe
- 48:56fueling for the the you know training days
- 48:58leading up um and so that's fine to
- 49:00do in moderation like maybe you know one
- 49:02night after your comp but
- 49:04Yeah,
- 49:04that's not the way that the general
- 49:07workout population should be eating on a
- 49:12regular basis, at least, right?
- 49:14But I am an advocate of all things
- 49:15in moderation.
- 49:18But as long as you're hitting,
- 49:19there's certain things I'm like,
- 49:20if you can hit your protein goal and
- 49:22your fiber goal and your fluid goal,
- 49:24enjoy a piece of pizza.
- 49:25As long as you're hitting the goals I'm
- 49:27giving you that you need to be filling
- 49:29up and eating these things and eating
- 49:30enough.
- 49:31And if you're still craving crappy foods
- 49:33and junk foods, then sure.
- 49:35But the idea behind a lot of what
- 49:37I think I preach is...
- 49:41You're going to be so full on protein
- 49:43and fiber and fluids and eating the good
- 49:45foods and some fruits and vegetables and
- 49:47some whole grains and lean proteins,
- 49:50nuts and seeds,
- 49:50all the stuff and make it in a
- 49:52health,
- 49:53like a way that you enjoy eating it
- 49:54too.
- 49:54Not just like,
- 49:55I feel like you're eating cardboard,
- 49:56but you're gonna be so full on eating
- 49:58enough calories and protein that you're
- 50:02You're going to maybe still crave some
- 50:04junk food or something.
- 50:05Maybe it's there, but you're like,
- 50:06not right now.
- 50:07Like, I'm too full right now.
- 50:08I'm going to revisit the thought of coming
- 50:10back and getting that slice of pie in
- 50:11like an hour.
- 50:12So then an hour comes and goes and
- 50:14maybe you don't even think about it again
- 50:15or you don't want it.
- 50:16And then your next meal happens.
- 50:18And again,
- 50:18you fill up on the good stuff and
- 50:19you're full.
- 50:20So it's like, ah, dang it.
- 50:22I'm still wanting that pie,
- 50:23but I'm going to come back.
- 50:24I'm too full right now.
- 50:25So I don't know if that makes sense,
- 50:27but that's kind of the way I want
- 50:29people to kind of view it.
- 50:30And then still,
- 50:30if you want that slice of pie,
- 50:32then have the slice of pie and then
- 50:34move on and reset for the next meal
- 50:36and make good choices.
- 50:39The latest debate in the CrossFit space
- 50:42around nutrition is the quality of the
- 50:45calories you're taking in.
- 50:47You know, there are people that are like,
- 50:49no matter what you do, it's calories in,
- 50:50calories out.
- 50:50That's it.
- 50:52And I've heard Dave Castro fight against
- 50:54it.
- 50:54I've heard the people at CrossFit HQ that
- 50:57are like the nutritionists and then deal
- 51:01with this all the time,
- 51:02that it's not just calories in,
- 51:03calories out.
- 51:04You want to look at the quality of
- 51:05the calories you're putting in.
- 51:08So your thoughts on that?
- 51:10Yeah.
- 51:10So that's why I'm a big fan of
- 51:12micronutrient tracking.
- 51:14And a lot of people I've worked with
- 51:16are kind of like, wow,
- 51:17I've never really done that before.
- 51:18I've only ever looked at like calories and
- 51:20macros.
- 51:22And if it fits your macros, right,
- 51:24you can eat it.
- 51:26But
- 51:28I like to look at the micronutrients being
- 51:30fiber,
- 51:30different vitamins and minerals as well,
- 51:33calcium.
- 51:33Like, are you getting those things in?
- 51:35And if you're not,
- 51:36then your diet is crap.
- 51:37Like you need to be getting all these
- 51:39vitamins and minerals through food.
- 51:41So that to me is showing if you're
- 51:44not, you're not making the right choices,
- 51:46even though the macros fit and the
- 51:47calories are making sense for your goal,
- 51:50you're not getting the micronutrients.
- 51:52So therefore like the foods you're
- 51:53choosing,
- 51:54we need to swap those out for more
- 51:56nutrient dense foods.
- 51:58So yeah,
- 51:59I'm a hundred percent on board with the
- 52:00quality.
- 52:00And I think that's been ignored for a
- 52:02long time.
- 52:04So I'm glad that that's a new focus
- 52:06for everybody.
- 52:09And early on CrossFit kind of endorsed the
- 52:12zone.
- 52:13And in the zone,
- 52:14it was just about your blocks, right?
- 52:17No matter how you got the blocks together.
- 52:20Right.
- 52:20It didn't matter how,
- 52:22just that they did fit together.
- 52:24Yeah.
- 52:24And I think that's carried over for a
- 52:26very long time.
- 52:27Yeah.
- 52:27Yeah.
- 52:29For sure.
- 52:31Train Olive.
- 52:32And I know it says train to live,
- 52:33but we make fun of it.
- 52:34So it's train Olive.
- 52:36I was reading it as Olive every time.
- 52:39What insurance does Caroline take?
- 52:42Like all of them.
- 52:44Blue Cross, Anthem, Cigna, United.
- 52:49Let's see other ones.
- 52:51I think there's definitely a couple more.
- 52:53But if you want to check to see
- 52:55if your insurance covers visits with me,
- 52:57I know on my Instagram,
- 52:59I have the link somewhere.
- 53:02I think it's on my bio.
- 53:05So my Instagram's crclips.
- 53:08Oh, you don't have me.
- 53:09I'm a little hashed.
- 53:10I'm a little app.
- 53:14Yeah.
- 53:14So if you go to, Oh, maybe the,
- 53:19the two more,
- 53:20the wellfield.fit and two more,
- 53:23it'd be book your nutrition session here.
- 53:26When you click that,
- 53:27it should pull up my little bio and
- 53:30picture of me.
- 53:30And then there's a section you can put
- 53:32your insurance info,
- 53:33your card and your insurance info,
- 53:34and then it'll spit out.
- 53:36Stop and then reshare.
- 53:38Okay.
- 53:38Get up the show.
- 53:40Yeah.
- 53:41That's the link you would want to use.
- 53:44And then you can, yeah,
- 53:46get your price is probably what you would
- 53:47want to click on the left under my
- 53:49little picture.
- 53:51And then that's where you can put in
- 53:53insurance company member ID.
- 53:54Yeah.
- 53:54All that.
- 53:55And then it'll give you an estimated,
- 53:56your sessions are a hundred percent
- 53:58covered or you might owe twenty five
- 53:59dollars.
- 54:00And there's a list of, well, you can't,
- 54:03it's not showing the drop down,
- 54:05but it is a long list of insurance
- 54:06companies.
- 54:08Yeah, and actually,
- 54:08I can tell you exactly.
- 54:09I have a list here.
- 54:14If I can pull it up.
- 54:15I can read them.
- 54:15Aetna, Allianthem, Blue Care Network,
- 54:17Blue Cross, Blue Cross, Blue Shield,
- 54:20Blue Shield, Care First, Cash Pay, Cigna,
- 54:23Empire, Florida Blue, Golden Rule,
- 54:26Highmark, Horizon, Humana, Independence,
- 54:30Blue Cross, Kaiser, Optum, Oxford,
- 54:34Regence, Blue Cross, Blue Shield,
- 54:37Select Health, UnitedHealthcare,
- 54:38United Medical Resources, and that's it.
- 54:41Wow.
- 54:42It's a plethora.
- 54:44It is.
- 54:46Nice use of the word plethora.
- 54:48Because I do that right.
- 54:53Yeah.
- 54:53So, yeah,
- 54:55no excuses to not come see a dietician
- 54:58and get the help you need today.
- 55:01Yeah.
- 55:01And zero percent or zero dollars for
- 55:04ninety five percent.
- 55:05Yeah.
- 55:06Yeah.
- 55:06That's pretty good deal.
- 55:08That's cool.
- 55:08You can use your insurance or stuff like
- 55:09that,
- 55:10because I do think everyone can benefit
- 55:12from meeting with like a good dietitian.
- 55:14And I feel like I'm a good dietitian.
- 55:16I care.
- 55:18But I try to address all the areas
- 55:21of someone's life.
- 55:23Yeah.
- 55:24Cool.
- 55:26You just have to call her train all
- 55:27of.
- 55:28Yeah, I'm like, nice to meet you,
- 55:29Train Olive.
- 55:30I remember you.
- 55:33Yeah.
- 55:36Her name is actually Winter, I believe.
- 55:38Okay, I was like, yeah,
- 55:39what name am I looking for when she
- 55:40actually comes through?
- 55:41Winter.
- 55:41That's a cool name.
- 55:42Yeah.
- 55:44All these people,
- 55:46and I have this weird thing with my
- 55:48memory that I can just remember goofy
- 55:50stuff like that.
- 55:51Yeah.
- 55:52Well, it's a unique name too, Winter.
- 55:54Yeah.
- 55:56Um, but yeah, nutrition's pretty awesome.
- 56:00And it's,
- 56:00there's a lot of information out there and
- 56:02you have to definitely do what works for
- 56:05you,
- 56:05but try to find someone that also has
- 56:08some experience working with people like
- 56:11you and a lot of people they're similar.
- 56:13Here's my last question for you.
- 56:15And then I'll let you, you go, um,
- 56:18should she sign up as train olive is
- 56:20she's she's asking.
- 56:22No, I think for like insurance and stuff,
- 56:23you got to put your full real name.
- 56:25Unless that's on your insurance card,
- 56:26you probably have to stick with the real
- 56:28name.
- 56:28Yeah.
- 56:30So there are so many fads and so
- 56:33many misconceptions of nutrition.
- 56:37Is more of your job debunking those or
- 56:41giving the client what they actually need?
- 56:45That's another good question.
- 56:48Yeah,
- 56:49I would say people will come to me
- 56:51with fads and questions and I want them
- 56:53to, and then we'll kind of go,
- 56:55I'll definitely go through those.
- 56:57But sometimes I just kind of like smile
- 56:59and like, huh, okay, yeah.
- 57:01Okay, well,
- 57:01this is what I want you to do.
- 57:03And then I kind of tell them,
- 57:04this is actually your plan.
- 57:07And because a lot of them have been
- 57:08doing these fads and trying these things.
- 57:10I'm like, well,
- 57:10you've been doing that and it's not
- 57:12working for you.
- 57:12So let's try something different.
- 57:14That's not the fad.
- 57:16And it's what I'm telling you to do.
- 57:17And then when I word it like that,
- 57:19they're like, yeah, you're right.
- 57:21Like I have been doing this for the
- 57:23last two years.
- 57:23I have been doing keto and here I
- 57:26am.
- 57:27Well then, yeah,
- 57:28let's not try keto for you.
- 57:30Does anybody ever bring something to you
- 57:32that you're like, oh my gosh,
- 57:34I've never heard that before?
- 57:39I did have, yeah,
- 57:40I did have one recently and it had
- 57:41to do with bananas.
- 57:42Yes.
- 57:44I'm trying to remember what it was,
- 57:45but it was something so outlandish.
- 57:47Like, no,
- 57:47you should never eat a banana because it
- 57:50will turn a straight like fat.
- 57:51And I'm like, no, it wasn't just like,
- 57:54oh, carbs make you fat.
- 57:55Like that kind of like just bananas
- 57:59thinking.
- 58:00Yeah.
- 58:00I was just like, no, only bananas.
- 58:01Like, no, I cut those on my diet.
- 58:03Cause they like make, yeah.
- 58:05They make your liver like they do
- 58:06something.
- 58:07I don't know.
- 58:07I'm like, that's, that's not correct.
- 58:10Yeah.
- 58:11But that was probably the weirdest thing.
- 58:13There's definitely people asking me if
- 58:14I've read books, this book, this person,
- 58:17this doctor.
- 58:17So I get a lot of that.
- 58:20And I try to keep up with,
- 58:21I need a book club.
- 58:22I need to be like reading one new
- 58:24random nutrition fad book a week.
- 58:28a week, maybe, if I could do that,
- 58:30if I could read that fast,
- 58:32just to stay on top of stuff.
- 58:33But there's just, yeah,
- 58:34there's just so much garbage out there.
- 58:35You just got to filter it out.
- 58:37But no,
- 58:38I think everyone should be like learning
- 58:39and doing their own research and reading a
- 58:40book,
- 58:41but then being open-minded to like even
- 58:44get online and read reviews of the book
- 58:46you're wanting to read about, you know,
- 58:48like see what other experts in the field
- 58:50are saying about that book.
- 58:51And because there's always,
- 58:53it's kind of just,
- 58:54there's balance to everything.
- 58:55You can't just
- 58:57pick nutrition fads that eliminate total
- 58:59food groups or say that one thing is
- 59:01inherently like all evil.
- 59:03Like, cause of there's always, you know,
- 59:07I don't know if caveats are the right
- 59:08word, but like,
- 59:08there's always something like you just
- 59:11gotta have that balance really in
- 59:13moderation and things.
- 59:14I think that's in keeping it simple.
- 59:16I think those kind of three things are
- 59:19the key to success,
- 59:21simple consistency and balance.
- 59:26But I would love to work with you
- 59:27more if you ever want to fill out
- 59:29my link online.
- 59:32We could dive deep.
- 59:34Yeah, I would love to dive deep.
- 59:38Well, I'm going to wrap it up here.
- 59:40If you have not done so already,
- 59:41please like and subscribe to the channel.
- 59:43We really appreciate that.
- 59:46if you can hold on one minute after
- 59:48we say goodbye.
- 59:49Sure.
- 59:50But yeah,
- 59:51if I'm so glad Caroline could be here,
- 59:53she's just a complete badass.
- 59:55It's been fun watching her career over the
- 59:57last couple of years.
- 59:58And I'm so glad she took the time
- 1:00:00to be here.
- 1:00:00If you have any questions,
- 1:00:02shoot them to my DM,
- 1:00:03shoot them to her DM.
- 1:00:04I'll get them to her if you shoot
- 1:00:05them to me,
- 1:00:07but we'll talk to everybody next time on
- 1:00:09lunch with the Clydesdale.
- 1:00:10Bye guys.
