Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Why Google Funds Anthropic with massive $40 billion investment
Transcript
- 0:00Google just handed over up to $40 billion and enough
- 0:03electricity to power millions of homes to Anthropic, an AI
- 0:07company whose flagship product is actively outselling Google's
- 0:10own artificial intelligence in the enterprise market.
- 0:13Yeah, the size of that capital commitment is just staggering.
- 0:16I mean, we're looking at a completely new hardware arms
- 0:19race, a huge energy infrastructure build out, and a
- 0:24really bitter legal conflict over military AI.
- 0:27So how does a single startup compel the world's biggest tech
- 0:30giants to hand over their checkbooks while, you know,
- 0:34simultaneously fighting the Pentagon in federal court?
- 0:37Right. So we have to look at the
- 0:37structure of this Google deal. It's incredibly specific.
- 0:40It's $10 billion upfront at a $350 billion evaluation.
- 0:45Wow. Yeah.
- 0:46And then there's another $30 billion that is contingent on
- 0:49strict performance targets. Plus, Amazon is simultaneously
- 0:53pouring in up to $25 billion of their own.
- 0:55Which is just a crazy amount of money.
- 0:57Like why is this? Happening well, it comes down to
- 0:59commercial adoption. Anthropics annual revenue run
- 1:03rate surged from $9 billion to $30 billion.
- 1:07And the main engine driving that is clawed code.
- 1:10It's an AI software development agent that reached a $2.5
- 1:15billion run rate on its own, and you know, the majority of
- 1:18Fortune 100 companies are using it right now.
- 1:21Wait, Becca, this sounds like a major airline buying a massive
- 1:25fleet of jets for a rival airline.
- 1:28Why is Google funding a direct competitor?
- 1:31I mean, that airline analogy is spot on.
- 1:33It's exactly like buying them The Jets, but with a strict
- 1:36contract that says they have to buy all their jet fuel from you
- 1:39and they can only park those jets at your gates.
- 1:42Oh, I see. So the consequence is this
- 1:44circular economy. Anthropic gets billions of
- 1:47dollars, but they are forced to spend heavily on Google Cloud
- 1:50and Amazon Web Services. Right to run their models.
- 1:53Exactly, it changes the power dynamic because those hyper
- 1:56scalers are using their capital to lock in Anthropic as a
- 1:59guaranteed mega customer for their own infrastructure.
- 2:02So they are paying their rival to rent their own equipment.
- 2:05Basically, yeah. And that equipment brings us to
- 2:08the hardware at the center of the Google deal.
- 2:10Yeah, they're getting access to the 7th generation Ironwood
- 2:14Tensor Processing Unit, or DPU. The specs are wild.
- 2:19A single chip delivers 4.6 petaflop PS of performance and
- 2:24has 192 gigabytes of memory, which effectively matches
- 2:29Nvidia's top tier Blackwell chip.
- 2:31Yeah, but how Google connects these chips is completely
- 2:34different than NVIDIA. Right.
- 2:36Because NVIDIA Cluster 72 chips in Iraq using standard packet
- 2:39switches, but Google uses optical circuit switches and a
- 2:433D Taurus mesh topology which lets them link over 9000 ships
- 2:48into a single unified pod. It's amazing physical
- 2:51engineering. They use these tiny mirrors to
- 2:53beam light directly from chip to chip.
- 2:55Hold on though, if NVIDIA is the unquestioned gold standard for
- 2:58AI hardware, why is Anthropic risking their models on Google's
- 3:01custom chips? Well, it really comes down to
- 3:03total cost of ownership. For inference, which is the
- 3:05daily process of answering user queries, Tpus are 30 to 44%
- 3:10cheaper for specific task of inference.
- 3:12Wow, that's a big drop. It is, and it opens up a split
- 3:16in chip design. So Google is creating 2 separate
- 3:19chips moving forward, one for training called Sunfish and one
- 3:22just for inference called Zebrafish.
- 3:24You know, from an economic standpoint, I'd argue raw
- 3:27hardware cost savings will win out over everything else.
- 3:31The cheapest purpose built silicon is just going to
- 3:33dominate I. Hear that?
- 3:34But NVIDIA software ecosystem creates an enormous barrier to
- 3:38entry. I mean, developers globally rely
- 3:41on NVIDIA specific programming languages.
- 3:44That's true. So even if Google's hardware is
- 3:46cheaper to run, forcing engineers to learn an entirely
- 3:49new ecosystem is a huge friction point.
- 3:52Even so, the physical infrastructure requirement is
- 3:54huge, regardless of the ecosystem.
- 3:56The Google deal includes 5 gigawatts of power for
- 4:00Anthropic. Yeah, that's.
- 4:01A lot. Just for perspective for
- 4:03everyone listening, one GW can power 3/4 of a million homes.
- 4:07So we're talking about powering several major cities.
- 4:10And over 200 environmental groups are currently demanding A
- 4:13halt to new data centers. Which is exactly why Anthropic
- 4:17is building a $5 billion Texas mega campus.
- 4:21They deliberately located it near natural gas pipelines to
- 4:25bypass the main electrical grid. Oh wow.
- 4:27Yeah, they're aiming for over 7 gigawatts of capacity.
- 4:30It seems contradictory for an AI company that claims to be
- 4:34building a better future for humanity to, you know, fire up
- 4:37huge natural gas pipelines just to run their servers.
- 4:41I get that, but the consequence of all this is Anthropic's four
- 4:46pillar energy plan, led by a new executive they hired from
- 4:50Google. OK, what is that?
- 4:51They're committed to pay for all grid upgrades, actively build
- 4:55new power generation, and reduce usage during peak grid stress.
- 4:59It basically changes data centers from passive grid
- 5:01consumers into active energy producers.
- 5:04Basically they have to build their own power plants just to
- 5:06keep the AI awake. That's exactly it.
- 5:08Which honestly leads into the geopolitical conflict here.
- 5:11The Department of Defense demanded unrestricted access to
- 5:13Anthropics AI for any lawful purpose.
- 5:16And Anthropic refused. Right, They mean obtained 2 firm
- 5:19lines, no mass surveillance of Americans and no lethal
- 5:24autonomous weapons without human oversight.
- 5:27And the fallout was severe. The Secretary of Defense
- 5:30designated anthropic the supply chain risk, which is a label
- 5:34usually reserved for foreign adversaries.
- 5:36That's intense. Yeah, a presidential directive
- 5:38banned them from federal systems, and the government
- 5:41cancelled a $200 million contract.
- 5:43Wait, can the government ban an American company simply because
- 5:47the company refuses to change its terms of service?
- 5:50Well, it sparked a massive legal battle.
- 5:52A federal judge blocked the Pentagon's ban, calling it
- 5:55illegal First Amendment retaliation.
- 5:57OK, But then an appeals court denied a motion to stop the
- 6:00security risk label in a parallel case.
- 6:03This limits the government's ability to force ethical
- 6:05concessions, but it opens up a huge legal war over who actually
- 6:10controls the boundaries of AI warfare.
- 6:12I mean, looking at it structurally, national security
- 6:14imperatives usually override corporate terms of service.
- 6:17You just can't have a weapon system suddenly refused to
- 6:20operate because of a commercial update.
- 6:22True, but a private company has the legal right to refuse lethal
- 6:26use of its product. They have the right to dictate
- 6:29how their tech is used. Oh, and meanwhile, Open AI has
- 6:33stepped in to take the military contracts that Anthropic refuse.
- 6:36So the single startup is currently reshaping the
- 6:39semiconductor market, financing its own massive power grids and
- 6:43battling the military over the ethical limits of warfare.
- 6:46When a single private company commands the computing power of
- 6:50a small nation and can dictate terms to both both the
- 6:52hyperscalers and the Pentagon, who is actually regulating the
- 6:56future of artificial intelligence?
