- 0:00Speaker 1: It's 38 all. Bills can win it here. Wright puts
- 0:03Speaker 1: it down. The kick is on the way and it
- 0:05Speaker 1: is good. And the Bills have won it. The Bills
- 0:10Speaker 1: have won it. The Bills have won it. They win
- 0:14Speaker 1: it 41 to 38. Incredible. What a comeback by the Bills.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Jacksonville's perfect record on the line right here. Looney, keep it.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Left side, touchdown. Kyle Williams, touchdown. Amazing. Unbelievable. They put
- 0:53Speaker 1: in Williams. Has to pull back. And he scores a touchdown.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The 12th year defensive tackle. It's really incredible. This place
- 1:07Speaker 1: is pandemonium. What's good, folks, family, friends, loved ones, enemies, frenemies, wizards, witches, muggles, mudbloods, people?

- 1:56Speaker 1: of Disguise Coverage, we'll be diving into some Buffalo Bills
- 2:01Speaker 1: defensive game tape detailing several of the struggles we have
- 2:05Speaker 1: been seeing on the defensive side of the ball for
- 2:08Speaker 1: a multitude of games this year, dating back to some
- 2:11Speaker 1: of the games last year, some things that have kind
- 2:13Speaker 1: of carried over on this team. banner says toodles folks
- 2:16Speaker 1: banners say intro folks what a fool i am some
- 2:19Speaker 1: things that we're seeing carry over for some individual players
- 2:22Speaker 1: just a multitude of things that have gone wrong on
- 2:24Speaker 1: the defensive side of the ball obviously an underwhelming start
- 2:28Speaker 1: to the jim leonard era as a defensive coordinator for
- 2:31Speaker 1: the buffalo bills in terms of i know toodles we
- 2:35Speaker 1: just started i threw up the wrong banner i'm out
- 2:37Speaker 1: of i'm out of practice i'm out of practice um
- 2:41Speaker 1: an underwhelming start to Jim Leonard's defensive coordinator tenure with
- 2:45Speaker 1: the Buffalo bills. Um, you know, and, and speaking as
- 2:49Speaker 1: someone who was extremely excited when he came on board
- 2:52Speaker 1: and still is, um, like I said, through the off
- 2:55Speaker 1: season and said, going into this season, I thought the
- 2:59Speaker 1: ceiling for this defense was capped. Um, given, uh, positional archetypes,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the bills are still subscribing to the body types. They
- 3:06Speaker 1: have some of the individual talent level and just, how
- 3:09Speaker 1: would that mesh, how would that jive, the fits, all
- 3:11Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. I thought that capped the ceiling
- 3:13Speaker 1: of what this defense could be, but I thought the
- 3:15Speaker 1: floor would be fine enough to get the job done.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And I still think it can be. I thought when
- 3:22Speaker 1: all was said and done, this Bill's defense could, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: depending on what you're looking at, is it EPA, how
- 3:28Speaker 1: you're measuring success, depending on how you're measuring success. Is
- 3:30Speaker 1: it EPA per play? Is it success rate? Is it,
- 3:32Speaker 1: I see Lou saying, I blame the tootles on Jim
- 3:35Speaker 1: Leonard personally. Fair. Whether it's DVOA, I thought the ceiling
- 3:40Speaker 1: for the Bills this year was around 13th, 14th in
- 3:44Speaker 1: terms of defense. I thought the bottom would be somewhere
- 3:46Speaker 1: around 19th, 20th, 21st. As of right now, depending on
- 3:50Speaker 1: what you're looking at, they are in the mid to
- 3:52Speaker 1: low 20s in a multitude of categories. Sometimes some things
- 3:56Speaker 1: look good. They've had some good individual performances, but it's
- 3:59Speaker 1: been a really muddy and messy start. We've heard Jim
- 4:03Speaker 1: Leonard give some pretty forthcoming nuggets on kind of where
- 4:07Speaker 1: they're at as a group and the struggles week to week.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I also think some of the successes that they've had
- 4:15Speaker 1: from an individual player standpoint have kind of been, I'm
- 4:18Speaker 1: kind of in the middle on both of the ends
- 4:21Speaker 1: of the extreme. I think some of the really great
- 4:23Speaker 1: plays that we've seen from some individuals, some of the
- 4:27Speaker 1: things that are getting blown up and hyped up, I
- 4:29Speaker 1: think some of that is a little too hyped up
- 4:31Speaker 1: and needs to come back to reality a little bit.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I think some of the struggles, you know, could
- 4:36Speaker 1: potentially turn the corner. But it's been an underwhelming start
- 4:38Speaker 1: no matter how you slice it. I still think this
- 4:41Speaker 1: is a defense that is going to continue to have
- 4:44Speaker 1: growing pains. We're seeing those growing pains. We are hearing,
- 4:48Speaker 1: you know, Jim Leonard talk about them, but you're seeing
- 4:50Speaker 1: them regularly on the game, during the game, whether you're
- 4:53Speaker 1: watching the broadcast, whether you're watching the tape, you're seeing
- 4:55Speaker 1: some pretty underwhelming stuff. So I thought, you know, we
- 4:58Speaker 1: would dive into a bunch of those aspects here in
- 5:01Speaker 1: this episode, dive into the tape and really kind of
- 5:03Speaker 1: see what's going on, what's happening. Um, we've got eight
- 5:08Speaker 1: plays to go through in this episode tonight that I
- 5:11Speaker 1: think are a pretty good microcosm and representation of what
- 5:14Speaker 1: we've seen up to this point. I've got, uh, one
- 5:19Speaker 1: of those plays is a play from last season, uh,
- 5:22Speaker 1: that I think continues to kind of represent where a
- 5:25Speaker 1: certain player is. Um, And throughout all of this, throughout
- 5:29Speaker 1: this episode, throughout the struggles, I still, you know, again,
- 5:34Speaker 1: it's not good by any stretch what the Bills have
- 5:36Speaker 1: looked like so far. But I do think there is
- 5:39Speaker 1: a chance that this defense could be a group that
- 5:43Speaker 1: is kind of maybe the opposite of what we've seen
- 5:45Speaker 1: from Bills defenses of, you know, Christmas has passed, where
- 5:49Speaker 1: they're solid and sound in the regular season. And then
- 5:52Speaker 1: we get to the playoffs and things kind of fall apart.
- 5:55Speaker 1: This might be the inverse of that this year where
- 5:57Speaker 1: come November, come December, this defense is the best version
- 6:01Speaker 1: of themselves potentially. Now, what that best version is, I
- 6:05Speaker 1: don't think it's like, oh, they're a top five defense
- 6:07Speaker 1: or a top 10 defense. The best version of this
- 6:09Speaker 1: defense this year might be more middling. But I do
- 6:12Speaker 1: think there is a chance for them to kind of
- 6:16Speaker 1: get out from the shadow of the low 20s. and
- 6:22Speaker 1: the 30s in the rankings for things and kind of
- 6:25Speaker 1: turn some things around a little bit. And questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 6:31Speaker 1: anything and everything you folks have throughout this episode, put
- 6:33Speaker 1: it into the chat. I will try to get to
- 6:36Speaker 1: things as we're going through the film. I will try
- 6:38Speaker 1: to get to things at the end. I'm going to
- 6:39Speaker 1: get to some things now. So anything and everything you got, questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 6:43Speaker 1: something defensively, something offensively, something I'm breaking down at a play,
- 6:48Speaker 1: something that you're noticing that you have a question on
- 6:49Speaker 1: that maybe I didn't speak about. anything and everything that
- 6:52Speaker 1: you folks got. And I'll dive into the chat right now,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and then we will start to get into some things.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Charles says, Bill's therapy session engaged. Yes, 1,000%. RJ says, hey, everyone,
- 7:04Speaker 1: such a rough game on Sunday. Yeah, not great. Nate says, hey,
- 7:09Speaker 1: Aunt Curious, will you and Eric still be doing weekly
- 7:11Speaker 1: longer film videos? I don't know. I don't know. uh
- 7:19Speaker 1: chill will says talk us off the ledge brother rj
- 7:23Speaker 1: says rams could very well put up 70 against this
- 7:25Speaker 1: team rj don't do that don't do that charles says
- 7:30Speaker 1: i was more concerned with the front than the secondary
- 7:31Speaker 1: it's been the complete opposite i think that's fair um
- 7:35Speaker 1: although i do think some of the the good front
- 7:37Speaker 1: play is also maybe i'm not trying to rain on
- 7:41Speaker 1: that parade at all if there is a parade but
- 7:43Speaker 1: i do think some of the front success especially from
- 7:45Speaker 1: an individual player standpoint I think some of it has
- 7:48Speaker 1: been overhyped as I alluded to, and maybe needs to
- 7:50Speaker 1: come back down to earth a little bit, but yeah, fair.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I do. I think that's a fair thought. Pop says,
- 7:57Speaker 1: is it always the outside corners that are struggling the most? No,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I think it's been across the board. I think the
- 8:01Speaker 1: outside guys are struggling a bit. I think Cole Bishop
- 8:03Speaker 1: is struggling. I think the linebackers are struggling at times.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And despite the pressure numbers, I think the front also
- 8:09Speaker 1: has moments where they're just toothless as rushers and, quarterbacks
- 8:13Speaker 1: just have time it's it's just blah in a lot
- 8:16Speaker 1: of ways across the board jared says games like these
- 8:19Speaker 1: are the reason people like rj are the way they
- 8:21Speaker 1: are rj you know what's up rj says epa is
- 8:23Speaker 1: the third worst in the league for defense not great
- 8:27Speaker 1: christian says i read your thread on the archetypes issues
- 8:30Speaker 1: players are having in the scene etc one question i
- 8:32Speaker 1: had is what about the secondary gives you hope for
- 8:35Speaker 1: improvement i.e secondaries age benford etc um What gives me
- 8:42Speaker 1: hope for improvement is just that, again, in theory, they
- 8:48Speaker 1: should get better the more they play together. I think
- 8:51Speaker 1: throughout the offseason, and this isn't even just the secondary
- 8:54Speaker 1: because I'm going to tie the linebackers in the second
- 8:56Speaker 1: level into it as well because it's the whole back
- 8:58Speaker 1: end for coverage. Terrell Bernard didn't have a lot of
- 9:01Speaker 1: time on task this offseason because he was recovering from surgery.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Dorian Williams didn't have a lot of time on task. Um,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Chauncey Gardner Johnson misses some time. Cole Bishop misses some time.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Max Hairston misses some time. Davis and Igbenosin is a rookie.
- 9:14Speaker 1: This is a new defense for Benford. Um, Alford's a
- 9:16Speaker 1: new guy. Like these guys haven't played together a ton
- 9:19Speaker 1: and they're all in a new, new defense together. Um,
- 9:22Speaker 1: so I think you can reasonably hope that the more
- 9:26Speaker 1: they play together, the better they will get. And I
- 9:30Speaker 1: say that because the bills are playing more match matches.
- 9:35Speaker 1: or rules-based coverages this year. If you don't know what
- 9:38Speaker 1: match coverage is, the easiest way to think about it
- 9:40Speaker 1: is rules-based coverage, right? Where, you know, if you and
- 9:42Speaker 1: I are on defense together, we're reading, you know, one
- 9:45Speaker 1: or two players and, you know, if player A does this,
- 9:48Speaker 1: we're going to do that. If player B does this,
- 9:50Speaker 1: we're going to do that, so on and so forth.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And when that stuff works, it's beautiful because you are,
- 9:56Speaker 1: you're essentially playing off of what the offensive is doing
- 10:00Speaker 1: you are reading route distributions you are recognizing to the
- 10:03Speaker 1: space and to what is happening in front of you
- 10:07Speaker 1: but in order to do that everybody has to see
- 10:10Speaker 1: the same thing at the same time in the same
- 10:14Speaker 1: way Right. Also, if offenses know this type of coverage
- 10:17Speaker 1: you're playing, they can run certain concepts. They can kind
- 10:19Speaker 1: of mess with your rules and attack your coverage rules,
- 10:22Speaker 1: attack your spacing, overload and flood certain things. But at
- 10:26Speaker 1: the crux of all that, again, is players have to
- 10:29Speaker 1: see the same thing at the same time. the more
- 10:34Speaker 1: time on task you have, the more do you start
- 10:36Speaker 1: to gel, the more understanding there will be. If you've
- 10:38Speaker 1: got guys that are plopped in together for the first
- 10:40Speaker 1: time or early together, and all of a sudden they
- 10:43Speaker 1: have to hit the ground running for these rules-based coverages
- 10:45Speaker 1: and be on the same page, that's a little harder.
- 10:48Speaker 1: So I don't think that talent is all of a
- 10:50Speaker 1: sudden going to get improved. Guys' skill sets aren't going
- 10:53Speaker 1: to change. Their traits aren't going to change. Their talent
- 10:55Speaker 1: level isn't going to change. The body types, the archetypes,
- 10:58Speaker 1: that's not going to change on the defense collectively. But
- 11:01Speaker 1: I do think as they play better to, as they
- 11:04Speaker 1: play more, you can make the case that they will
- 11:06Speaker 1: play better together and play more aligned and play more,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know, with more synergy and all that stuff. I just,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I've watched Jim Leonard defenses so much back when he
- 11:15Speaker 1: was coaching Wisconsin, studying the tape this year at Wisconsin,
- 11:18Speaker 1: you know, the Denver stuff, it can be, you know, he's,
- 11:21Speaker 1: he's a, he's a piece of that with Vance Joseph
- 11:23Speaker 1: as the defensive coordinator, but I've watched Jim Leonard get
- 11:26Speaker 1: so much done with no disrespect, but like, lesser talent
- 11:32Speaker 1: at Wisconsin. You know, he, he was having sound and
- 11:35Speaker 1: strong defenses year in and year out of Wisconsin. And
- 11:38Speaker 1: it's not like, Oh, you know, the, the number one
- 11:41Speaker 1: recruit recruiting class in the nation is at Wisconsin. And
- 11:44Speaker 1: they got all these blue chip five-star dudes. Like that's
- 11:46Speaker 1: not how it was working. You know, he hung his
- 11:49Speaker 1: hat on getting guys to understand the assignment, understanding their
- 11:55Speaker 1: roles and responsibilities, how to play simplifying things and get
- 11:59Speaker 1: everybody to get on the same page. And I think
- 12:02Speaker 1: eventually that will start to turn for this Bills team.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And if not, then I'm not trying to give him
- 12:08Speaker 1: a pass. But for me, that says more about the
- 12:09Speaker 1: players than it potentially does on Jim Leonard. Maybe we'll
- 12:11Speaker 1: see what year two looks like, you know, if there
- 12:13Speaker 1: is a year two for him here or somewhere else.
- 12:16Speaker 1: But yeah, I think, you know, what gives me hope
- 12:19Speaker 1: for the improvement is guys getting healthier a little bit.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But guys just hopefully getting more time on task. Obviously,
- 12:24Speaker 1: Benford's injury throws a wrench into that because if Benford
- 12:27Speaker 1: doesn't get to play with the guys and that's another
- 12:29Speaker 1: person who is out, if D. Alford is out, that's
- 12:32Speaker 1: another wrench in this whole thing. But it's just, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 1: they want to play more match and rules based coverages
- 12:38Speaker 1: to do that. Everybody has to be on the same page.
- 12:41Speaker 1: It's hard for everybody to be on the same page
- 12:42Speaker 1: if they're not practicing together, playing together and building that chemistry.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Connor says the bad defense doesn't feel right because the
- 12:51Speaker 1: pressure and run stuff rates are good. The coverage is
- 12:53Speaker 1: real bad. Yeah. I mean, some of the run stuff
- 12:56Speaker 1: is run rates are good, but then they're also getting
- 12:59Speaker 1: blown off the ball and guys are getting moved. Like
- 13:01Speaker 1: there's a lot of muddiness across the board, across the board.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Joshua says, my biggest concern is that this loss against
- 13:09Speaker 1: the Pats makes me look back in retrospect and think
- 13:11Speaker 1: that all of our wins are weaker than I thought before.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Are the bills not as good as we thought? Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I mean, Time will tell. You can make this case, though.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I said it when I was on GR, I think
- 13:24Speaker 1: last week, like the first couple of weeks, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 1: you're facing a Houston offense or a Houston team where
- 13:31Speaker 1: they're kind of it's week one. You're kind of figuring
- 13:33Speaker 1: some things out. What is Houston? You know, and then
- 13:35Speaker 1: it's like, well, their offensive line ends up and ends
- 13:37Speaker 1: up being kind of terrible. So how do you feel there?
- 13:40Speaker 1: Then you play a Lions team that's playing with three
- 13:42Speaker 1: backup offensive linemen. Not so great. And then you play
- 13:45Speaker 1: a Chargers team with more backup offensive linemen, and it's
- 13:48Speaker 1: also a complete mess. But then, I mean, honestly, you're
- 13:50Speaker 1: playing a Patriots team with backup offensive linemen, no Christian Gonzalez,
- 13:54Speaker 1: no Christian Barmore, and they beat you. So you could
- 13:59Speaker 1: be looking at it worse or kind of glass half
- 14:02Speaker 1: full still, no matter how you go. We got to
- 14:04Speaker 1: get more sample size and see. I didn't think the
- 14:06Speaker 1: Bills were as much of a juggernaut as people were
- 14:09Speaker 1: making them out to be after their 3-0 start. I
- 14:10Speaker 1: thought there were caveats. So for me, this loss isn't
- 14:14Speaker 1: too crazy, although it is very disappointing considering the Patriots
- 14:18Speaker 1: were without Gonzalez and Barmore and AJ Brown. Um, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: then they lose Mac Collins and they're, they have all
- 14:22Speaker 1: these injuries on the offensive line. You should have been
- 14:25Speaker 1: able to take advantage of a banged up and reeling
- 14:27Speaker 1: Patriots team. And instead you, you know, kind of threw
- 14:31Speaker 1: up all over yourself. Charles says, I hope you got
- 14:36Speaker 1: that fourth and short with Matt where Max chases nobody
- 14:39Speaker 1: in the flat. I do. Lou says, if we get
- 14:41Speaker 1: in and the Bills defense, which did not die this Christmas,
- 14:44Speaker 1: I'll be satisfied enough on that side of the ball.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Aunt P says, we want the film room. I second
- 14:50Speaker 1: that notion. What else do we got? All right, more things,
- 14:57Speaker 1: more things. Karachi says, could you see this year's defense
- 15:01Speaker 1: having a Ravens 2024 type of year? Hmm. Yeah, you know,
- 15:06Speaker 1: or kind of figured some things out as the year
- 15:08Speaker 1: went along. I don't know if we're going to see
- 15:09Speaker 1: that level of jump. I do think they're going to
- 15:12Speaker 1: get better. I do think things will stabilize at some point.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It's just a matter of where do they stabilize to?
- 15:17Speaker 1: Does it stabilize? Do they go from 25th to 21st?
- 15:21Speaker 1: Do they go from 25th to 15th? I do think
- 15:25Speaker 1: things will stabilize as we go down the stretch. I
- 15:27Speaker 1: do think this will be a group where we're sitting
- 15:30Speaker 1: here in the middle of November and come playoff time
- 15:33Speaker 1: where it's like, okay, the defense isn't amazing, but they're
- 15:37Speaker 1: not a complete vulnerability. And that was my hope going
- 15:40Speaker 1: into the year. We'll kind of see. All right. Let's
- 15:46Speaker 1: dive into the tape. That's the wrong button that I
- 15:50Speaker 1: just clicked. Here we go. Here we go. Here we go.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Here we go. Here we go. Here we go. All right.
- 16:00Speaker 1: First play that we're going to look into. Oh, you
- 16:02Speaker 1: know what would help? If I shared the screen. All right.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Let's drop this. Let's make me go away. All right.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Now we can see everything full screen. This first play
- 16:10Speaker 1: they're going to look at Real simple, nothing complicated. I
- 16:14Speaker 1: just want everybody to see this area here, mainly these three,
- 16:20Speaker 1: Terrell Bernard, Dee Alford, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, even Cole Bishop a
- 16:25Speaker 1: little bit on this play. I want everyone to just
- 16:31Speaker 1: see the amount of communication, but more importantly, the type
- 16:37Speaker 1: of communication that we are seeing here on this play
- 16:41Speaker 1: from everybody. essentially kind of in this range. I'm just
- 16:46Speaker 1: going to play it. Look at the body language. Look
- 16:51Speaker 1: at everything. It's more, there's palms up. What are we doing?
- 16:54Speaker 1: What's happening? It's frantic. There's potential questions being proposed, but
- 17:00Speaker 1: it's more of questions like if someone says, Hey, you know,
- 17:03Speaker 1: what is two plus two equal? No one here is
- 17:05Speaker 1: like four. Everyone's like four, five. Is it three? And
- 17:14Speaker 1: the communication is happening literally right up to the last minute.
- 17:17Speaker 1: You are watching them all try to align and get
- 17:19Speaker 1: on the same page as the play is going on.
- 17:23Speaker 1: I think this play is a good microcosm of where
- 17:24Speaker 1: the Bills are at mentally because there's just guys aren't reading, reacting.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Guys aren't playing fast. You are watching them think post-snap
- 17:34Speaker 1: a lot of times, but even pre-snap too. You can
- 17:36Speaker 1: see it in their movements. Like let's just watch Terrell
- 17:39Speaker 1: Bernard here in this instance, right? He gives a signal.
- 17:45Speaker 1: He sees something. He looks at Cole Bishop. He's given
- 17:48Speaker 1: some direction. D. Alford is now giving a signal down
- 17:51Speaker 1: here with his hands and also probably giving something verbally.
- 17:54Speaker 1: So Bernard is looking at him. He's checking. Alford's still
- 17:57Speaker 1: calling something. There's the part I wanted to get. Watch
- 18:00Speaker 1: Bernard right here, literally just throwing his hands up and
- 18:05Speaker 1: also kind of shakes his head like, what? Like, what
- 18:07Speaker 1: is happening? And then now let's watch C.J. Garner-Johnson on
- 18:11Speaker 1: the back end here. His palms are also up and
- 18:14Speaker 1: he's like, what, what are we doing? Guys just aren't
- 18:17Speaker 1: on the same page. Chauncey Gardner Johnson, even more hands up,
- 18:21Speaker 1: kind of just trying to figure out. They're still trying
- 18:24Speaker 1: to figure things out. Now there's motion added to it.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Now they're trying to bump and shift. They're trying to
- 18:29Speaker 1: figure out what's going on. Ends up being a pretty
- 18:32Speaker 1: sound game on the run. The result of this play
- 18:35Speaker 1: is less important, although it's a good run and a
- 18:37Speaker 1: good game for the Patriots. The result of this play
- 18:39Speaker 1: is less of the focus and concern, um, then it is,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, kind of just what's leading up to the
- 18:47Speaker 1: play where there's just a lot of chaos, a lot
- 18:49Speaker 1: of thoughts. We don't know who's going where, who's doing what.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Look at the communication. It's frantic. There's too much of it.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And nothing's even happened right now. And then we get
- 19:00Speaker 1: the motion. Like it's just everybody trying to figure out
- 19:02Speaker 1: what the hell is going on. I think this is
- 19:04Speaker 1: a good microcosm of kind of where they're at. Even let's,
- 19:09Speaker 1: let's watch, let's watch Bishop. Bishop. gives a hand check
- 19:14Speaker 1: and a hand signal right as the snap is about
- 19:17Speaker 1: to happen, and he gets down to the line. Bump, bump,
- 19:22Speaker 1: the signal, like it's just all, it's happening right up
- 19:25Speaker 1: until the snap. It's frantic. It doesn't look confident. It
- 19:30Speaker 1: looks like everybody's not on the same page. Bernard and CJ,
- 19:33Speaker 1: each at different points are like, wait, what? What is happening?
- 19:36Speaker 1: What are we doing? What's going on? Okay, everything's fine. Maybe,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I don't know. You're getting differences and guys are seeing
- 19:44Speaker 1: things differently. No, it's this. We're going to call this. Wait,
- 19:46Speaker 1: what do you mean it's that? No, we got to
- 19:48Speaker 1: switch and do this. Wait, what is happening? Okay, everything's fine. No,
- 19:51Speaker 1: we got to do this. Here's the snap. I think
- 19:53Speaker 1: it's a microcosm of where they're at as a defense.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Less than ideal. Question from the chat from Christian who says,
- 20:01Speaker 1: do you think that Leonard will try to dumb down
- 20:02Speaker 1: the defense more due to this? Then again, I don't
- 20:05Speaker 1: recall too many exotic plays in comparison to previous Leonard defenses.
- 20:08Speaker 1: We're going to get into some you know, creative things
- 20:11Speaker 1: that he did and we're going to watch the struggles
- 20:12Speaker 1: with it. Um, I do think, I mean, it kind
- 20:18Speaker 1: of depends on how you want to put it, but
- 20:20Speaker 1: Leonard even said in his press conference that they do
- 20:22Speaker 1: have to simplify some things. Um, but he's always been
- 20:26Speaker 1: a very good teacher. He's been a guy who's gotten
- 20:29Speaker 1: the best out of his guys. He's been able to
- 20:30Speaker 1: simplify the complex and gotten them to play fast and
- 20:33Speaker 1: gotten them to understand their checks and assignments and not
- 20:37Speaker 1: having things be too much mentally. Um, But then you
- 20:40Speaker 1: hear him at the podium say multiple times, you know, hey,
- 20:44Speaker 1: if there is too much mentally, you know, kind of
- 20:46Speaker 1: multiple times he's either saying that phrase or alluding to,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you know, there being too much happening mentally in between
- 20:52Speaker 1: the years. You know, I think he will simplify it
- 20:59Speaker 1: or have to. The issue is, how do you simplify it, right?
- 21:02Speaker 1: Do you just play basic spot drop zone? Because that's
- 21:05Speaker 1: going to get eaten up in today's NFL. And that's
- 21:07Speaker 1: what all Bills fans have hated for the past couple
- 21:09Speaker 1: of years. You could also play man, right? But they
- 21:12Speaker 1: seem to not have the horses for man, and they're
- 21:14Speaker 1: also getting beat in man. So it's kind of just
- 21:17Speaker 1: rough all around right now. RJ says, this defense is
- 21:21Speaker 1: too complicated then. There are other new DCs all over
- 21:24Speaker 1: the league, and they don't seem to have all these
- 21:25Speaker 1: issues to this extent. I do like Leonard. Maybe he
- 21:27Speaker 1: has to simplify it. I don't want to excuse Leonard completely,
- 21:33Speaker 1: but watching this defense work in a multitude of forms
- 21:36Speaker 1: makes me believe in it. I think it's just the
- 21:38Speaker 1: guys either need more time on task or there's just
- 21:41Speaker 1: something larger at play here. And again, it's not, it's not,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and we're going to see in a little bit, it's
- 21:47Speaker 1: not failures across the board. That first play that I
- 21:50Speaker 1: use is an example of multiple guys kind of not
- 21:52Speaker 1: being able to get on the same page, but there's
- 21:56Speaker 1: more individual breakdowns than there are breakdowns of the group
- 21:59Speaker 1: as a whole, which makes me think it's tied more
- 22:02Speaker 1: to individual players than it is to the group at large.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Charles says Blitz more at attack. Yeah, kind of when
- 22:07Speaker 1: in doubt, live by the sword, die by the sword.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Let's just be like you're in a video game, right?
- 22:12Speaker 1: When all else fails, just start chucking nades and firing
- 22:14Speaker 1: everywhere and kind of see what happens. This next play
- 22:18Speaker 1: here that we are going to look at here, this
- 22:21Speaker 1: is the third and 10, 55 seconds left in the
- 22:25Speaker 1: fourth quarter. Here is Cole Bishop right here, number 24.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I want to read a quote from On Cole Bishop
- 22:34Speaker 1: from Jim Leonard yesterday from his press conference, he said
- 22:39Speaker 1: there's times where he just and he like exclaims a
- 22:41Speaker 1: little bit where he just plays fast and you want
- 22:44Speaker 1: him to learn how to slow it down and control it.
- 22:47Speaker 1: That's something that we're going to look at in a
- 22:48Speaker 1: little bit when it comes to Cole Bishop. Leonard also says,
- 22:52Speaker 1: and this part I think pertains particularly to this play.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Leonard says, I think he tries to do a little
- 22:56Speaker 1: too much sometimes from a communication standpoint. And that puts
- 23:00Speaker 1: him in some situations where he feels like he's playing catch-up.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I don't know if the catch-up aspect necessarily happens here,
- 23:07Speaker 1: but here is Cole Bishop, number 24. Let's just watch. Again,
- 23:12Speaker 1: what did Leonard say, right? Trying to do a little
- 23:15Speaker 1: too much from a communication standpoint. This is something I
- 23:17Speaker 1: was very happy in listening to Leonard's presser. I put
- 23:20Speaker 1: my head in the sand until I finish watching tape,
- 23:23Speaker 1: especially for one side of the ball. So I listened
- 23:25Speaker 1: to Leonard's presser after I watched the defensive tape and
- 23:29Speaker 1: a lot of my notes kind of mimicked what he
- 23:32Speaker 1: was saying, which made me feel good. But this was
- 23:35Speaker 1: a big one for me for Bishop. Like he is
- 23:37Speaker 1: doing a lot of communicating and it seems like he's
- 23:40Speaker 1: doing it and it's almost kind of like causing him
- 23:42Speaker 1: to short circuit or overload as opposed to just helping
- 23:46Speaker 1: him tie into his traits and tie into the physical ability.
- 23:49Speaker 1: So let's watch Cole Bishop pre-snap. I'm going slow-mo. Max
- 23:53Speaker 1: Hairston is out here. We just can't see him. He's
- 23:55Speaker 1: off screen. So that's who Bishop is kind of initially
- 23:58Speaker 1: speaking to is Max Harrison off screen. Hamlin here is
- 24:02Speaker 1: pointing out that the Patriots have a sixth offensive lineman
- 24:05Speaker 1: on the field. So here's their regular offensive line, left
- 24:08Speaker 1: tackle to right tackle. And then their inline tight end
- 24:12Speaker 1: is actually a sixth offensive lineman. So DeMar Hamlin is
- 24:14Speaker 1: calling this out like, yo, we got, we got a
- 24:17Speaker 1: big boy here at this tight end spot. So Bishop
- 24:20Speaker 1: notices it. Now Bishop talks to Hamlin. He's telling Hamlin
- 24:23Speaker 1: what to do. You know, hey, you're going to man
- 24:25Speaker 1: up on this guy. Here's the tight end. Actually, scoot
- 24:28Speaker 1: forward a little bit. Let me give you a pat
- 24:29Speaker 1: on the back. Now I'm going to also whisper a
- 24:31Speaker 1: sweet nothing in your ear, give you something else extra
- 24:34Speaker 1: for your assignment. So he's doing all this mental load
- 24:38Speaker 1: and work, and the ball is snapped. He's not even
- 24:41Speaker 1: fully in position. He still looks like he's saying something
- 24:44Speaker 1: to DeMar Hamlin as this ball is being snapped. Now
- 24:48Speaker 1: his eyes are on Hunter Henry. This is Cole Bishop's
- 24:52Speaker 1: man on this play. Hunter Henry. Starts out blocking Greg Rousseau,
- 24:57Speaker 1: and then he's going to leak out into the route.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Patriots are going play action. Remember, it is third and 10,
- 25:04Speaker 1: 55 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Cole Bishop, his eyes, again,
- 25:12Speaker 1: on Hunter Henry, his man, who he has in man coverage.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Sees Henry go to block Greg Rousseau. Down in distance, situation,
- 25:22Speaker 1: kind of understanding what's going on. You know, maybe they
- 25:25Speaker 1: do run the ball, and you have been susceptible to
- 25:27Speaker 1: the run at times, so I understand honoring that. But
- 25:30Speaker 1: it's third and 10, right? And the Pats don't want
- 25:34Speaker 1: to give you the ball back. You know they don't
- 25:35Speaker 1: want to give the ball back to Josh Allen, even
- 25:37Speaker 1: though he threw up all over himself and chucked it
- 25:39Speaker 1: downfield for an interception on the previous drive for seemingly
- 25:42Speaker 1: no reason. Well, not seemingly no reason. It looks like
- 25:45Speaker 1: he thought Palmer was open. Then he spins out of
- 25:48Speaker 1: the pressure, decides to chuck it anyway. Yin and yang
- 25:51Speaker 1: at Josh Allen. Not excusing him, but bleh. So here's Bishop.
- 25:57Speaker 1: On Hunter Henry. On Hunter Henry. He's watching Henry block Rousseau.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Literally takes the bait of thinking, oh, okay, like he's
- 26:05Speaker 1: just going to stay in and block Rousseau, right? His
- 26:09Speaker 1: eyes get into the backfield. As his eyes get into
- 26:12Speaker 1: the backfield, so now he's peeking. He gets caught peeking.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Here comes Chisholm to kind of simulate a crack, right? Because, again,
- 26:19Speaker 1: we're trying to sell run here for everything for the Patriots.
- 26:22Speaker 1: So we get the run fake. We're going play action.
- 26:26Speaker 1: We're selling run fake. Here comes the receiver to crack
- 26:31Speaker 1: on Cole Bishop. All these things that are like, oh,
- 26:33Speaker 1: here comes the run. Here comes the run because we
- 26:35Speaker 1: want to fool the defense and we want to create
- 26:37Speaker 1: some space for somebody and try and get a first down.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Bishop's watching Henry, watching Henry. Peeks into the backfield. Gets
- 26:44Speaker 1: slightly tapped and touched from Chisholm. Henry releases. Great timing
- 26:49Speaker 1: from Chisholm and Henry. And now Bishop is outleveraged. And
- 26:54Speaker 1: we've got space. And this is an easy catch. And
- 26:57Speaker 1: then Max Hairston, I'm not going to drill down on
- 27:00Speaker 1: him too much. Everybody has already talked about it, noted it.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Jim Leonard spoke on it. Here's Hairston up here, just
- 27:06Speaker 1: essentially kind of loafing, not really going hard to try
- 27:09Speaker 1: and make a stop here. Doesn't really give a good
- 27:11Speaker 1: shoulder either. Doesn't really do much. So boo on Hairston.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Not great. Not good for him. But Bishop is the
- 27:18Speaker 1: key for me on this one because he gets caught
- 27:20Speaker 1: peeking in the backfield. I don't know why he's not
- 27:24Speaker 1: playing more to the down and distance situation and thinking,
- 27:26Speaker 1: you know what? Play action here might seem more likely
- 27:29Speaker 1: than the run, given the situation and given the status
- 27:32Speaker 1: of this game and given who we have on offense.
- 27:35Speaker 1: But it looks like, again, he's trying to do too much.
- 27:38Speaker 1: He's trying to get everybody aligned, as Jim Leonard spoke to. Again,
- 27:42Speaker 1: Leonard didn't specifically call out this play, but this looks
- 27:44Speaker 1: perfect for it. He's telling Hairston what to do. He's
- 27:47Speaker 1: telling Hamlin. He's still telling Hamlin. He's still telling Hamlin.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Here comes the snap. Now he's trying to play catch up. Right.
- 27:52Speaker 1: He's still talking to Hamlin, trying to get Hamlin adjusted.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Still whispering things to him. And then the play happens
- 27:59Speaker 1: and now he's trying to play catch up. I think
- 28:02Speaker 1: what Jim Leonard said in the presser was speaking spot
- 28:05Speaker 1: on to this play. And then again, now he's trying
- 28:08Speaker 1: to play catch up and maybe that's what kind of
- 28:11Speaker 1: gets him out of focus mentally, where instead of just
- 28:13Speaker 1: being like, no, let me stay on my guy like
- 28:16Speaker 1: I should because I have him in man coverage. You know,
- 28:19Speaker 1: I know I'm going to peek in the backfield. and
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm going to lose sight of my guy. And I
- 28:24Speaker 1: could have understood this more on a first down, right?
- 28:27Speaker 1: Or even second down, because maybe they are going to
- 28:29Speaker 1: run it here. But, you know, and I should have
- 28:34Speaker 1: looked up what are the Patriots' tendencies on third down
- 28:36Speaker 1: or third and long, which is seven plus. Like, how
- 28:38Speaker 1: often do they run it? How often do they play action?
- 28:40Speaker 1: How often do they pass it? But, I mean, it's
- 28:44Speaker 1: just a blown assignment from Cole Bishop. Trying to do
- 28:48Speaker 1: too much, mentally overloading himself. Trying to play catch up
- 28:52Speaker 1: as the snap happens. Gets out leveraged. First down Patriots.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Bad effort from Max Harrison on the back end. Really ugly.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Really bad from Harrison. Not great. Not great. Not great.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Not great. This comment from Chilwell says Bishop looked like
- 29:09Speaker 1: a soon to be all pro under McDermott. He was
- 29:11Speaker 1: flying around blowing things up. You can tell he's in
- 29:12Speaker 1: his head. He flashed a bunch last year. I do
- 29:16Speaker 1: push back hard on the all pro aspect. I saw
- 29:19Speaker 1: people commenting on it last year of like, man, he
- 29:23Speaker 1: should go to the Pro Bowl. He's one of the
- 29:24Speaker 1: best safeties in the league. You saw a lot of
- 29:27Speaker 1: these mental mistakes from Cole Bishop last year. But because
- 29:31Speaker 1: it was a simpler and or safer defense and he
- 29:34Speaker 1: was playing with guys who kind of knew everything already,
- 29:38Speaker 1: he was buoyed by that. and kind of insulated in
- 29:41Speaker 1: the ecosystem a little bit more now he's playing in
- 29:44Speaker 1: a defense where everybody is kind of on their own
- 29:48Speaker 1: looking to one another to lean on one another figure
- 29:52Speaker 1: things out together and he's getting put in situations where
- 29:55Speaker 1: he has to perform more and I think you know,
- 29:59Speaker 1: now that he has to kind of swim on his
- 30:01Speaker 1: own a little bit, he's, he's struggling to tread water. Um,
- 30:04Speaker 1: I didn't think, I didn't think his play for me
- 30:06Speaker 1: personally last year, his, his play was all pro caliber.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I thought he had those great moments in the chiefs game.
- 30:11Speaker 1: He had some brilliant flashes at times, the interception against
- 30:13Speaker 1: the saints was awesome. Um, but you, you did see
- 30:17Speaker 1: these mental struggles for him last year, including on one
- 30:21Speaker 1: of the biggest plays of the year against Denver, which
- 30:22Speaker 1: I'm actually going to show, um, and a little bit,
- 30:25Speaker 1: but fair point. I do think it looked like he
- 30:26Speaker 1: was kind of coming into his own to some degree. Um,
- 30:29Speaker 1: And so if you thought that, he's regressed. Either way,
- 30:32Speaker 1: he's not playing good. This next play, this is a
- 30:37Speaker 1: fourth and three on the first drive for the Patriots.
- 30:40Speaker 1: So we have a fourth down play later to look
- 30:42Speaker 1: at where Max Hairston is in off coverage. Any pedals out?
- 30:45Speaker 1: We're going to take a peek at that. But this
- 30:47Speaker 1: is a fourth and three earlier in the game. This
- 30:49Speaker 1: is that first drive where the Patriots go. I think
- 30:51Speaker 1: it's 10 plays, but it's 97 yards. They march right down.
- 30:55Speaker 1: May hits Dobbs for a touchdown on Hairston. on the
- 31:00Speaker 1: skinny post later, but this is a fourth and three,
- 31:05Speaker 1: the bills are going to run a non-traditional Tampa to
- 31:10Speaker 1: coverage on this play. And they're going to do it
- 31:13Speaker 1: with a simulated pressure. I'm going to break down what
- 31:16Speaker 1: that is. And then we're going to get into the
- 31:17Speaker 1: individual assignments. Let's go in slow motion here. Okay. Let's
- 31:20Speaker 1: talk about the simulated pressure aspect. All a simulated pressure is.
- 31:23Speaker 1: If you are a regular watcher of the show, I
- 31:26Speaker 1: would hope you know what that is, but in case
- 31:28Speaker 1: you don't, or in case you're new, Simulated pressure. All
- 31:30Speaker 1: that means is we are showing blitz, but on the snap,
- 31:35Speaker 1: we're going to rush four. So it's not really a blitz.
- 31:37Speaker 1: We're just rushing four. However, we are going to exchange
- 31:42Speaker 1: one of our traditional rushers for a non-traditional rusher. So
- 31:45Speaker 1: we're going to take essentially defensive linemen, drop them into coverage,
- 31:48Speaker 1: and bring either a linebacker or a DB on the blitz.
- 31:52Speaker 1: In this case, our blitzer is going to be the
- 31:54Speaker 1: man from the slot, Mr. D. Alford. So watch Alford
- 31:58Speaker 1: come from the slot. There he goes. Now, if you look,
- 32:01Speaker 1: there's four rushers. So Alford, and then we got Rousseau, Walker, Oliver, right?
- 32:06Speaker 1: So a non-traditional rusher here, and then traditional guys here.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Dropping into coverage, Mr. Bradley Chubb. So we have a
- 32:13Speaker 1: non-traditional rusher in Alford. He's rushing. And then we have
- 32:19Speaker 1: a traditional rusher in Chubb dropping into coverage. That's all
- 32:22Speaker 1: it means when I say simulated pressure. A creeper pressure,
- 32:26Speaker 1: is essentially the exact same thing, except you don't show
- 32:31Speaker 1: pressure pre-snap. We've got a bit of a pressure look here.
- 32:34Speaker 1: You know, five showing one of these guys might be coming.
- 32:37Speaker 1: So simulated pressure, we are simulating that there's pressure, right?
- 32:40Speaker 1: We're showing something, and then it's not a pressure. We're
- 32:43Speaker 1: dropping a guy into coverage that doesn't really cover. We're
- 32:46Speaker 1: bringing a guy on the rush who isn't a traditional rusher.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So that's what that aspect is. Now, let's get into
- 32:52Speaker 1: the non-traditional Tampa aspect of it. So we're going to
- 32:57Speaker 1: get Tampa two coverage. All that means we've got cloud
- 33:00Speaker 1: guys up here. We've got a pole runner here. We've
- 33:03Speaker 1: got another cloud corner out here, and then we've got
- 33:06Speaker 1: a deep half and a deep half. Usually your deep
- 33:09Speaker 1: half players are who your safety. So CJ Garner Johnson,
- 33:13Speaker 1: look down here. Where's the other safety? It's Cole Bishop.
- 33:17Speaker 1: He's on the line. It would be Actually, this wouldn't
- 33:19Speaker 1: be crazy for Bishop to kind of peel off on
- 33:21Speaker 1: the snap and get to a deep half or even
- 33:23Speaker 1: a deep quarter because he's really athletic like that. But
- 33:27Speaker 1: kind of change some looks, play with offenses a little bit.
- 33:29Speaker 1: Here's where we're getting into some creativity for Jim Leonard, right?
- 33:33Speaker 1: And this isn't unique to Leonard. Non-traditional tampas and spins
- 33:36Speaker 1: like this have been used by defenses really for the
- 33:39Speaker 1: past several years. You get it a bunch. This isn't
- 33:43Speaker 1: some crazy concept, some crazy scheme that Leonard cooked up.
- 33:47Speaker 1: You see teams run this a bunch, and they are
- 33:49Speaker 1: able to execute it. So, on the snap, let's watch
- 33:53Speaker 1: senior guarder Johnson. He goes from the single high to
- 33:56Speaker 1: a deep half to the field. Max Hairston, he is
- 33:59Speaker 1: dropping to the deep half here into the boundary. Then
- 34:03Speaker 1: we've got Bernard as that Tampa player, and then we've
- 34:07Speaker 1: got Dorian here in a hook, and we've got Bradley
- 34:11Speaker 1: Chubb here in a hook. Now, here is Cole Bishop.
- 34:15Speaker 1: the cloud defender. I, I am not, I did not
- 34:18Speaker 1: purposefully pick these plays to continue to pick on Cole Bishop.
- 34:24Speaker 1: He just happens to be the one that is having
- 34:26Speaker 1: errors in these, in these plays where Leonard is trying
- 34:30Speaker 1: to do creative things. And Bishop just happens to be
- 34:33Speaker 1: the one who is having errors. So here's Cole Bishop.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Now all he's going to do is be a cloud
- 34:38Speaker 1: player out here. Three receivers over here. So we have
- 34:42Speaker 1: a three, by one running back to this side. So
- 34:46Speaker 1: in theory, because it is a fourth and three, this
- 34:48Speaker 1: running back Ramondre Stevenson, he could leak out into the flat.
- 34:51Speaker 1: You do have to be cognizant of that. If you
- 34:53Speaker 1: are Cole Bishop, you do have to be aware. So
- 34:55Speaker 1: that is fair, but let's watch Cole Bishop right here.
- 34:58Speaker 1: Number 24, we're going to go on slow-mo. He gets
- 35:00Speaker 1: out here. You would like him to reroute Dobbs. Doesn't
- 35:04Speaker 1: really get a hands on him a ton. Maybe makes
- 35:07Speaker 1: Dobbs widen a little bit, but not really. Bishop is
- 35:10Speaker 1: watching him over his shoulder. Let's see what happens. kind
- 35:14Speaker 1: of staying right in line with the sticks. If you notice,
- 35:17Speaker 1: first down marker is right here. Here's the 25, so 26,
- 35:21Speaker 1: about the 26 and a half. Bishop is roughly at
- 35:25Speaker 1: that depth, thinking, okay, quick hitter's going to come, a
- 35:28Speaker 1: little quick speed out, a little quick hitch, something. But
- 35:32Speaker 1: he just keeps going to the sideline, keeps going to
- 35:34Speaker 1: the sideline. No idea where Dobbs is. Hairston, at the
- 35:40Speaker 1: same time, getting into a deep half. And this is
- 35:44Speaker 1: just so much space for one receiver, and then the
- 35:48Speaker 1: whole shot is complete. Focus on Bishop one more time
- 35:52Speaker 1: as he drops. Again, he should peak. Is Ramondre going
- 35:57Speaker 1: to release? Now, depending on what they're doing, what the
- 36:00Speaker 1: rules are for this coverage, what's going to happen, Chubb
- 36:03Speaker 1: could play him a little bit, but you have this
- 36:05Speaker 1: crosser coming from Pop Douglas, so Chubb is going to
- 36:08Speaker 1: meet that here and shut that off. That's fair. I
- 36:12Speaker 1: get the idea of Bishop, hey, let's peek back inside.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Is this running back releasing? I don't know. Because again, Bishop,
- 36:21Speaker 1: as he sinks, his eyes are on Dobbs, so he
- 36:23Speaker 1: has to peek back in. But he stays flat. Hairston
- 36:30Speaker 1: is deep. There's tons of space. Not great spatial awareness.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Oodles of space. An easy drop in the bucket for
- 36:37Speaker 1: Drake May. He's going to run it in some real
- 36:39Speaker 1: time now as I speak. And as he peeks at Dobbs,
- 36:46Speaker 1: he can see that Dobbs is still widening. So you'd love, again,
- 36:50Speaker 1: in a perfect world, Bishop to sink underneath that, make
- 36:56Speaker 1: the throw at least a little bit harder. Hairston isn't
- 36:59Speaker 1: a regular deep half player, but he's essentially, he just
- 37:03Speaker 1: gets too deep. Bishop stays too shallow, and there's plenty
- 37:06Speaker 1: of space for Dobbs. Dobbs knows it right away. He
- 37:08Speaker 1: clears Bishop and throws his hand up right away, like, hey,
- 37:10Speaker 1: hit me, I'm just in space. Not great. This next play,
- 37:18Speaker 1: play four. I went with the fourth downs back to back.
- 37:24Speaker 1: So on the previous play, good drift from May. He
- 37:27Speaker 1: hits Dobbs comfortably in the hole because there's too much
- 37:29Speaker 1: space between Bishop and the flat, and Hairston's the deep half.
- 37:33Speaker 1: This next play, fourth and three. Max Hairston, right? Patriots
- 37:40Speaker 1: are going to motion into a stack. It makes sense.
- 37:44Speaker 1: for Hairston to be off when you are facing a stack,
- 37:50Speaker 1: you don't want to be on the same plane, same plane,
- 37:52Speaker 1: meaning like you don't want Hairston to be here. Right.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Or again, he could be here, just same plane. Even
- 37:59Speaker 1: as the nickel, you don't want to have your DBS
- 38:01Speaker 1: on the same plane there because you can get picked.
- 38:04Speaker 1: You can get rubbed. It's easy for guys to create
- 38:07Speaker 1: obstruction and just, we've seen it in time. I don't
- 38:10Speaker 1: think I have to dive into detail too much on what, um,
- 38:14Speaker 1: you know, a pick or a rub is. But if
- 38:15Speaker 1: you're on the same plane, you can get picked, you
- 38:17Speaker 1: can get rubbed. It's an easy way to get got
- 38:19Speaker 1: by an offense. So you don't want to be on
- 38:21Speaker 1: the same plane. But there's multiple ways to address the
- 38:26Speaker 1: stack here. You could be out here if you're Hairston
- 38:30Speaker 1: and you guys could banjo this thing, right? Where, you know,
- 38:32Speaker 1: somebody goes outside, I got him. Somebody goes inside, I
- 38:35Speaker 1: got him, right? You could play top hat, which is
- 38:39Speaker 1: you're essentially man to man and the point defender or
- 38:42Speaker 1: the guy on the line he covers the off man,
- 38:46Speaker 1: which would be the lower guy in the stack, and
- 38:49Speaker 1: the off defender, which would be Hairston, can cover the
- 38:53Speaker 1: point man, which would be Dobbs. So you can have
- 38:55Speaker 1: different rules. You could play outside-inside. You could play top hat.
- 38:58Speaker 1: You could adjust in a multitude of ways. But it's
- 39:02Speaker 1: fine and understandable that because the Patriots motion into a
- 39:06Speaker 1: stack here, it is understandable that that Hairston is going
- 39:10Speaker 1: to play off. Because again, you don't want to be
- 39:12Speaker 1: on the same plane as your nickel or whatever defender
- 39:15Speaker 1: is there with you. You don't want to create an
- 39:16Speaker 1: easy pick or rub situation. And then again, you could
- 39:19Speaker 1: play different things off of that. The Bills aren't going
- 39:22Speaker 1: to play different things off of that. The one the
- 39:26Speaker 1: issue with this is not only is he off here's
- 39:30Speaker 1: the first down marker because again it's fourth and three
- 39:33Speaker 1: i'm really bad at drawing today here's the first down
- 39:36Speaker 1: marker i can't draw straight lines there we go so
- 39:39Speaker 1: the first down marker is essentially at the 15th it's
- 39:42Speaker 1: fine if harrison sits here And with his speed, gets
- 39:46Speaker 1: anything that crosses his face or sits here or even
- 39:50Speaker 1: breaks this way, he's got the speed to close on that, right?
- 39:53Speaker 1: I'm going to let this play go a little bit
- 39:55Speaker 1: because essentially Dobbs can do anything he wants here, right?
- 39:58Speaker 1: He can go this way. He can push this way.
- 40:01Speaker 1: He can go this way. He's got the two-way go
- 40:03Speaker 1: that we talk about with slot receivers all the time.
- 40:05Speaker 1: He can push and slot. He can do anything. He
- 40:07Speaker 1: can sit here. He can go in a multitude of directions,
- 40:10Speaker 1: do a multitude of things. Hairston... continuing to backpedal feeds
- 40:16Speaker 1: into that. It gives him more cushion. It gives him
- 40:18Speaker 1: more space. It's fine. If Hairston sits right here, he's
- 40:21Speaker 1: done this at Kentucky where he's playing zone and he's
- 40:25Speaker 1: going to sit here and he's going to create a
- 40:28Speaker 1: collision point, do something, or you're going to let that
- 40:32Speaker 1: catch happen underneath. Cool. You've got speed trigger down on it.
- 40:35Speaker 1: That was the biggest way Hairston used his speed at Kentucky.
- 40:38Speaker 1: It wasn't this man coverage corner where he was locking
- 40:41Speaker 1: dudes up, turning, and running with guys. He was using
- 40:44Speaker 1: his speed to close down space in zone. Yes, you
- 40:48Speaker 1: saw some recovery speed stuff, especially down the field. There's
- 40:51Speaker 1: a really good one, I think, against Alabama where he
- 40:54Speaker 1: runs down. Or no, it's against Texas, I think, on
- 40:57Speaker 1: an underthrown ball from Quinn Ewers a little bit. But
- 41:00Speaker 1: he would use that speed to close down on stuff
- 41:03Speaker 1: when in zone. So we're seeing this, right? It's fourth
- 41:07Speaker 1: and three. And it's like, whoa, he's off. This is fine.
- 41:11Speaker 1: This is fine. I get it. You're in a stack.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Play off. You don't want to get picked. You don't
- 41:15Speaker 1: want to get rubbed. We're cool. Stay here. Stay on
- 41:20Speaker 1: this plane. Know the down and distance, which is fourth
- 41:23Speaker 1: and three. Know the situation. Sit here. Squat here. You
- 41:27Speaker 1: don't need to back up. I'm taking a drink. Of water.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I didn't mean like an alcoholic drink. So sit there.
- 41:38Speaker 1: You're fine. He continues to back up. Back up. Back up.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Dobbs has already passed the first down marker. It's fourth
- 41:46Speaker 1: and three. There's just too much space. That's it. He's
- 41:51Speaker 1: wide open. Completion. And then you can see Hairston as
- 41:55Speaker 1: he comes back out, claps his hands like, damn. Now,
- 42:01Speaker 1: I know the question is probably, Tim says I need
- 42:03Speaker 1: a drink. I know the question here is, you know,
- 42:08Speaker 1: is Leonard teaching this? Is this Harrison's decision? Is Leonard
- 42:13Speaker 1: teaching this? I don't know for sure. If I had
- 42:16Speaker 1: to lean one way, I don't think Jim Leonard is
- 42:20Speaker 1: telling his guys, hey, it's fourth and three, let's play
- 42:23Speaker 1: off and then also backpedal. I don't think he's teaching that.
- 42:27Speaker 1: And then based off Harrison's reaction after, I think he
- 42:29Speaker 1: was like, damn, I shouldn't have pedaled. Like, damn, I
- 42:31Speaker 1: gave too much space. I think he recognized it. So again,
- 42:34Speaker 1: we're fine up to this point. You know, we see, again,
- 42:37Speaker 1: watch even like the nickel, right? When they motion to
- 42:41Speaker 1: the stack, he changes what he's doing. He's like, oh, okay,
- 42:44Speaker 1: here we go. Like, we're still fine. We're still fine. Sit. Stay.
- 42:49Speaker 1: He doesn't. Backs up. And we get got. Right? Playing
- 42:57Speaker 1: single high coverage over here. The slot carries Pop Douglas.
- 43:03Speaker 1: He's on him. So essentially we're locked on that side.
- 43:07Speaker 1: And man, where we're going, Harrison has Dobbs, man on man.
- 43:11Speaker 1: You can play some catch, man. You could sit. Again,
- 43:14Speaker 1: sit at that 10-yard line. Sit at that spot. Create
- 43:18Speaker 1: a collision point. Something. Or if he's going to break left,
- 43:22Speaker 1: he's going to break right. You got some speed, man.
- 43:24Speaker 1: You can close down. You're quick twitch. Play to your twitch.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Make him play through you at this point. If he
- 43:30Speaker 1: wants to go this way and break out, create that
- 43:33Speaker 1: collision point here. Or make him. Break short and close
- 43:39Speaker 1: that thing down. You've got speed. Play to it. And
- 43:44Speaker 1: Dobbs is a really good separator in the underneath and
- 43:46Speaker 1: the intermediate, and especially in the low red zone. It
- 43:49Speaker 1: was one of my favorite things about him when I
- 43:51Speaker 1: scouted him this past offseason as a free agent. Dobbs,
- 43:55Speaker 1: despite getting some shots downfield in this game, he's not
- 43:57Speaker 1: a burner, and he's not faster than you. It's not like, oh, man,
- 44:02Speaker 1: I'm going up against... randy prime randy moss where i'm
- 44:06Speaker 1: like oh this dude might run by me i gotta
- 44:08Speaker 1: play it here or it's like oh man it's fourth
- 44:10Speaker 1: and ten the first down markers at the five situational
- 44:14Speaker 1: awareness lack of execution gets beat i think he knows
- 44:19Speaker 1: it claps his hands not pleased next play they're gonna
- 44:22Speaker 1: go another non-traditional tampa coverage this time with a creeper
- 44:27Speaker 1: pressure i want to say this because again this is
- 44:29Speaker 1: another non-traditional tampa i'm showing that uh is a failure
- 44:34Speaker 1: I like non-traditional Tampa coverages. I think they are good.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I don't want the takeaway to be from people. Well,
- 44:39Speaker 1: non-traditional Tampa's must be too complicated. This is too complicated
- 44:42Speaker 1: of a thing. This is a bad play call. They
- 44:45Speaker 1: should scrap this. No, this is a cool coverage. This
- 44:48Speaker 1: can be a very useful coverage. The players are just
- 44:50Speaker 1: not executing it. I want that. I want that to
- 44:53Speaker 1: be clear. I don't want the takeaway to be like, well,
- 44:54Speaker 1: this is the second time you've shown this type of
- 44:56Speaker 1: coverage and it's not working. Maybe they shouldn't do it. No.
- 44:59Speaker 1: They should do more creative things in an ideal world.
- 45:02Speaker 1: And again, this non-traditional Tampa, this one I'm going to show,
- 45:05Speaker 1: much like the other one I showed, this isn't like, whoa,
- 45:10Speaker 1: look what Jim Leonard's cooking, right? This isn't, sorry, I'm
- 45:14Speaker 1: about to call. This isn't like, whoa, look what Steve
- 45:19Speaker 1: Spagnuolo cooked up on this third down. Look at this designer,
- 45:23Speaker 1: this exotic pressure and coverage pairings. Look what he did.
- 45:28Speaker 1: This isn't overly creative. This is not unique to Jim Leonard,
- 45:35Speaker 1: what I'm doing. So I want to make that clear.
- 45:38Speaker 1: And again, it's not to give Leonard a pass. I'm
- 45:39Speaker 1: trying to hit all these caveats before everybody jumps down
- 45:42Speaker 1: my throat in any way because I know people are upset.
- 45:44Speaker 1: But non-traditional tampas are not unique to Leonard. These type
- 45:48Speaker 1: of coverage spins are also not complicated. They just need
- 45:51Speaker 1: to be executed. Now, again, you can play devil's advocate
- 45:53Speaker 1: and say, well, they're not executing him. So maybe they
- 45:55Speaker 1: should be doing simpler stuff, but this is also still
- 45:57Speaker 1: pretty simple. So the fact that they're not executing it
- 46:01Speaker 1: is like, how much simpler do you want to get? Right.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I guess the simplest thing would just be like, Hey,
- 46:05Speaker 1: just play man coverage. You see this guy go cover
- 46:07Speaker 1: that guy, but then you need awesome technique and to
- 46:10Speaker 1: play one-on-one. So I don't know. Charles says we need Brooks,
- 46:13Speaker 1: Barbara and Lynch. Hey man, if you want to play
- 46:15Speaker 1: those Tampa's or even, um, get yourself some Brian or
- 46:18Speaker 1: lacquer and those bear squads under lovey Smith. Ooh, Oh,
- 46:22Speaker 1: I appreciate you, Thomas. Thomas is out of all the
- 46:23Speaker 1: Buffalo podcasts. This type of the film study sessions are elite.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Love it. Keep it up. I appreciate the hell out
- 46:28Speaker 1: of you for that, Thomas. Thank you for being here.
- 46:29Speaker 1: And thank you for the kind words. If you folks
- 46:31Speaker 1: are enjoying this episode, like Thomas's, please, please, please. And
- 46:34Speaker 1: thank you. Drop a like on this video. Likes are
- 46:35Speaker 1: the lifeblood of these streams. Also tell your family, friends,
- 46:38Speaker 1: loved ones about it. Um, word of mouth is tremendously helpful.
- 46:40Speaker 1: It'd be like, Hey, you should check out this episode again,
- 46:42Speaker 1: if you find value in it. Uh, but I appreciate you, Thomas.
- 46:45Speaker 1: Thank you for the kind words. All right. So a
- 46:47Speaker 1: non-traditional Tampa from the Buffalo bills this time. It's a
- 46:51Speaker 1: creeper pressure, right? We talked about it earlier. Simulated pressure
- 46:55Speaker 1: and creeper pressure, same exact thing, except a simulated pressure
- 46:58Speaker 1: shows pressure pre-snap. A creeper pressure does not. But both
- 47:02Speaker 1: of them rush a non-traditional rusher and drop into coverage
- 47:08Speaker 1: a non-traditional coverage player. So this rusher is going to
- 47:12Speaker 1: be DeMar Hamlin. Our coverage dropper is, again, going to
- 47:15Speaker 1: be Mr. Bradley Chubb. Not bad. uncommon when you have
- 47:21Speaker 1: a three, four defense or an odd front structure. The
- 47:23Speaker 1: only thing is usually in an ideal world in those defenses,
- 47:26Speaker 1: these outside linebackers like Greg Russo and Bradley Chubb are here. Ideally,
- 47:31Speaker 1: they have more coverage capability and more athleticism and more
- 47:34Speaker 1: versatility to them. Guys like, you know, what Leonard did
- 47:37Speaker 1: at Wisconsin with Nick Herbig and Andrew Van Ginkle, guys
- 47:43Speaker 1: like that. Or if you think back to The Steelers
- 47:46Speaker 1: teams with Dick LeBeau, right? Like James Harrison and Joey
- 47:49Speaker 1: Porter coming off the edge. Those guys are rushers. They
- 47:51Speaker 1: can play the run. They can also cover a little bit.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Drop your three, four outside linebackers. Some of the guys
- 47:55Speaker 1: are more pure rusher. Some guys have a little more
- 47:57Speaker 1: hybridization and athleticism to them. But either way, we've got
- 48:02Speaker 1: four down front here. We are in nickel at this point.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Alfred is hurt. So, DeMar Hamlin is our nickel. He
- 48:11Speaker 1: actually didn't play too bad. I know a lot of
- 48:13Speaker 1: people are going to hate that because everybody hates DeMar Hamlin,
- 48:15Speaker 1: but he's fine as a backup and as a bandit. So,
- 48:19Speaker 1: Hamlin's going to rush. Chubb's going to drop. That's the
- 48:21Speaker 1: creeper pressure aspect of it. I'm going to go forward
- 48:23Speaker 1: in slow motion so you folks can see. There goes Hamlin.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Chubb drops. So, there's our four rushers. Hamlin being one
- 48:31Speaker 1: of them out here. Here's Chubb, right? Okay, cool. There
- 48:34Speaker 1: we go. Now, Let's go back to the non-traditional Tampa
- 48:38Speaker 1: aspect again. Hamlin's going to rush. Chubb is going to drop.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Where's Cole Bishop going? He's a cloud player. He's going
- 48:47Speaker 1: to the flat. Who's the corner to Cole Bishop's side?
- 48:53Speaker 1: Davidson Igbenosin, he's going to drop to the deep half.
- 48:56Speaker 1: Chauncey Garda-Johnson, he's going to drop to the deep half
- 48:58Speaker 1: over here. Again, this is not overly complicated. This is
- 49:01Speaker 1: just a nice adjustment, a nice coverage spin. This, again,
- 49:06Speaker 1: is a taste, just a small, small taste of Jim
- 49:09Speaker 1: Leonard getting creative, but also maybe an example of why
- 49:12Speaker 1: he doesn't get creative or get more creative. Because if
- 49:15Speaker 1: this is just a taste, this is baseline level creativity.
- 49:20Speaker 1: and they're not executing the baseline creative stuff. How can
- 49:25Speaker 1: they get to the exotic stuff, right? How can they
- 49:28Speaker 1: get to the 200 and 300 level classes if the
- 49:31Speaker 1: 101 or the 105 level stuff is still kind of questionable, right?
- 49:37Speaker 1: So here's Cole Bishop. Out here. Let the play run.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Similar situation, except now it's not a solo receiver like
- 49:46Speaker 1: it was before with Dobbs. Now we've got two on
- 49:49Speaker 1: this side, right? So here goes Bishop. He's widening with Dobbs,
- 49:54Speaker 1: widening with Dobbs, widening with him. Turns. He's on him.
- 49:57Speaker 1: He's widened. His eyes were to him. Now he's going
- 50:00Speaker 1: to look back in the backfield. And this is where
- 50:02Speaker 1: he gets got. He just keeps carrying that same angle
- 50:04Speaker 1: and even peeks over his shoulder. The timing of it
- 50:07Speaker 1: just kind of doesn't work. So he peeks back in.
- 50:09Speaker 1: You know, is somebody going to break out? Is somebody
- 50:12Speaker 1: sitting here? You know, is Dobbs going to go this
- 50:14Speaker 1: way and he's going to break out or kind of
- 50:16Speaker 1: sit right here? Let me peek. Although he's not getting
- 50:18Speaker 1: a call from anyone else. Or, you know, if he was,
- 50:22Speaker 1: I would think he would have turned earlier. But he
- 50:25Speaker 1: just widens, right? Let's reroute Dobbs. This is fine. Let's
- 50:30Speaker 1: push him out there. That's fine. We don't know what
- 50:32Speaker 1: route he's doing, but that's fine. Now he's in our
- 50:35Speaker 1: blind spot. So we're going to peek over. We're going
- 50:37Speaker 1: to look right at him. Let's peek at him, peek
- 50:42Speaker 1: at him. We just get caught. We keep sinking to
- 50:45Speaker 1: the sideline on a second and 10. And now Dobbs
- 50:49Speaker 1: sits right there and he's wide open. Bishop makes the tackle.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Bishop is going to slam the ground, slap the ground
- 50:57Speaker 1: because he's upset because he knows man is screwed up. Now,
- 51:00Speaker 1: what also plays a role into this is Chubb, right?
- 51:06Speaker 1: He is a coverage player on this. He's not traditional
- 51:09Speaker 1: coverage player. He's going to drop into the hook. You
- 51:12Speaker 1: would potentially like to see him, right? Like let's space
- 51:16Speaker 1: this out a little bit more. You know, again, here's
- 51:18Speaker 1: our Tampa split field, split field. Bernard is at a
- 51:21Speaker 1: deeper level, ready to run the pole. And then we've
- 51:23Speaker 1: got a hook here, hook here. Chubb is not a
- 51:26Speaker 1: traditional coverage guy, right? In an ideal world. I just
- 51:29Speaker 1: want to put this out there. It'd be nice. You
- 51:30Speaker 1: see him drift maybe a little bit into this window.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Make may have to arc this throw, give Bishop a
- 51:35Speaker 1: chance here. IGB to close on it. Right. But Chubb,
- 51:39Speaker 1: is kind of just on the hash, more in line
- 51:43Speaker 1: with May. He's not obstructing this giant window over here.
- 51:48Speaker 1: So he's not squeezing anything. Bishop isn't squeezing anything. IGB
- 51:54Speaker 1: has to relate in case this corner out comes his
- 51:57Speaker 1: way because he's got to be deep as the deepest, right?
- 51:59Speaker 1: Stay over the top of everything because he's the deep
- 52:01Speaker 1: half player. Bishop sinks. This time he sinks underneath. He
- 52:06Speaker 1: gets the depth, but he just keeps sinking deeper Over
- 52:09Speaker 1: this way too much. And just keeps going to the sideline.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Keeps going to the sideline. Keeps going to the sideline.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Dubs just wraps around him. Catch. Just these little details, right?
- 52:23Speaker 1: These little details. These little pieces that are off, right?
- 52:28Speaker 1: Pop said, do the Bills have any good plays on defense? Yeah,
- 52:30Speaker 1: they had some good run stops. If we wanted to
- 52:32Speaker 1: just do an all-positive episode, could have done an episode
- 52:34Speaker 1: on Deion Walker. For the struggles that Terrell Bernard had
- 52:38Speaker 1: in space, I thought Terrell Bernard had some really good
- 52:40Speaker 1: plays against the run. I'm going to show a not-so-good
- 52:43Speaker 1: one in this episode, but I put a ton of
- 52:44Speaker 1: stuff up on social today and yesterday of Bernard slamming
- 52:49Speaker 1: the door on Reggie Gilliam in the hole, shooting, triggering,
- 52:52Speaker 1: making some tackles behind the line, tackles for loss. So, yeah,
- 52:55Speaker 1: there were some good plays against the run. There's a
- 52:57Speaker 1: good coverage play I'm going to show in a little
- 52:58Speaker 1: bit on this episode. So, yeah, the Bills' defense had
- 53:01Speaker 1: some good plays. They had some good pressures. They forced
- 53:03Speaker 1: a turnover. Not the interception. That was kind of a fluke.
- 53:05Speaker 1: But the forced fumble where they collapsed the pocket. And then, yeah,
- 53:08Speaker 1: Deion Walker had a good game. But, again, this episode
- 53:12Speaker 1: I wanted to focus on the execution pieces and these
- 53:14Speaker 1: little things that are off, right? And it's just this one.
- 53:18Speaker 1: I like the call. I like the idea. We're just
- 53:22Speaker 1: going to drift a little too much. Right? Even if
- 53:27Speaker 1: you look on the opposite side here, watch Hairston. how
- 53:33Speaker 1: Hairston plays in the cloud out there. Granted, he's got,
- 53:39Speaker 1: you know, everybody's inside him. So he's able to kind
- 53:41Speaker 1: of hinge and keep everything in his peripherals, but he
- 53:45Speaker 1: sees number one, go upfield, but he's got his eyes
- 53:48Speaker 1: on too. Okay. Like, is this guy coming out here?
- 53:50Speaker 1: Do I got to keep an eye on here? What
- 53:51Speaker 1: do I got to do? Let me play the route distribution.
- 53:54Speaker 1: He's watching him, but then watch him even out of
- 54:00Speaker 1: his periphery or whether he gets a call from it,
- 54:03Speaker 1: sink and cut off Raritan underneath. Or at least be
- 54:06Speaker 1: able to run with him so that if this throw comes,
- 54:08Speaker 1: it's got to get arced or be put into a
- 54:10Speaker 1: good spot. Again, Raritan's got some space, but if this
- 54:13Speaker 1: throw were to come, that's far hash to out there.
- 54:16Speaker 1: You know, he sank enough a little bit. Bishop just
- 54:18Speaker 1: gets too far outside. The depth is cool. You just
- 54:21Speaker 1: want to be more in the window, right? He just
- 54:23Speaker 1: gets a little too far outside. Chubb is here. There's
- 54:26Speaker 1: a ton of space. Again, it's just these little details.
- 54:29Speaker 1: And again, this could... get better the more they play
- 54:34Speaker 1: with one another, right? The more they play these coverages,
- 54:36Speaker 1: the more they're in this role. I do think this
- 54:39Speaker 1: is more of a simple thing, but it's just these
- 54:41Speaker 1: little details, right? If you're off by a hair, game
- 54:43Speaker 1: of inches, right? Al Pacino, any given Sunday, game of inches.
- 54:46Speaker 1: If you're off by a step here or there, you're slow,
- 54:48Speaker 1: you're early, you know, there's a big difference between all
- 54:51Speaker 1: this stuff. So another non-traditional Tampa, this time with a
- 54:55Speaker 1: creeper pressure conversion for the Patriots. Bishop slaps the ground.
- 55:02Speaker 1: He's upset. I don't know if I ran this in
- 55:03Speaker 1: real time or not, so I'm going to run it
- 55:04Speaker 1: in real time a couple times just so we can
- 55:05Speaker 1: get the feel of it. Keep driving. Nope, he got
- 55:08Speaker 1: inside me. Catch. Dobbs just wrapping it right around him.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Just off by a little bit. Missed it by that much. Now,
- 55:22Speaker 1: this play that I'm bringing up from last year, ironically,
- 55:26Speaker 1: this is also a non-traditional Tampa, so again, please do
- 55:29Speaker 1: not hate this play. This play, I don't know if
- 55:34Speaker 1: anybody recognizes it immediately from the pain of it all.
- 55:40Speaker 1: This is the third and 11 in the fourth quarter
- 55:44Speaker 1: against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round of the
- 55:46Speaker 1: playoffs last season. The Bills are up 27 to 23. Again,
- 55:52Speaker 1: third and 11, fourth quarter, two minutes, 38 seconds left
- 55:55Speaker 1: on the clock. This is a play that the Denver
- 55:58Speaker 1: Broncos convert that A lot of the dialogue was around
- 56:04Speaker 1: the soft coverage Sean McDermott was calling. And man, I
- 56:10Speaker 1: can't believe they played soft. They were attacking. And then
- 56:13Speaker 1: when the crunch time happens, they play a soft coverage.
- 56:16Speaker 1: They give up all this space. What a horrible call.
- 56:19Speaker 1: McDermott's a horrible defensive coordinator. Diatribe, discourse, conversation, all that
- 56:24Speaker 1: kind of stuff, right? The Bills are going to run
- 56:26Speaker 1: a non-traditional Tampa again. Single high alignment. Here is Cole Bishop.
- 56:33Speaker 1: Christian Benford out here. Deep half player. Trey White out here.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Deep half player. I'm going to let this play start
- 56:40Speaker 1: to run. Here comes Cole Bishop. I like this spin. Again,
- 56:44Speaker 1: non-traditional Tampa. Taron Johnson is going out to the flat
- 56:48Speaker 1: as the cloud player. Bishop is coming down here into
- 56:51Speaker 1: the hook. Shaq Thompson running the pole. So we got
- 56:54Speaker 1: guys changing levels. We've got Bishop playing top down. Deep
- 56:57Speaker 1: half for Benford. Deep half for Tredavious White. Again, non-traditional Tampa.
- 57:02Speaker 1: Our deep half players are a corner and a corner
- 57:07Speaker 1: instead of being two safeties. We've got Cam Lewis as
- 57:10Speaker 1: a cloud player underneath here. Non-traditional Tampa, cool stuff. This
- 57:15Speaker 1: is third and 11. Again, third and 11. Here's the
- 57:20Speaker 1: first down marker at the 48. I can't draw straight lines.
- 57:24Speaker 1: This is Cole Bishop. Sit there. Just sit there and stay.
- 57:30Speaker 1: They're probably going to go for it on fourth down.
- 57:32Speaker 1: But don't take the bait. That's all you got to do.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Just don't take the bait. What happens on this play?
- 57:38Speaker 1: Look at his eyes. Here comes the running back out
- 57:41Speaker 1: of the backfield. Look at Cole Bishop and his eyes.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Just watch what Bishop does. Ooh, I got to jump
- 57:49Speaker 1: this underneath route. And what happens? I just move out
- 57:53Speaker 1: of this window slightly. And what happens? They hit the
- 57:57Speaker 1: dig behind me to Cortland Sutton. Now, maybe this throw
- 58:02Speaker 1: gets completed no matter what. Maybe Nix puts great arc
- 58:06Speaker 1: and touch and pulls the string on this throw, and
- 58:08Speaker 1: he drops it over Bishop regardless. But as he breaks underneath,
- 58:15Speaker 1: it gets hit in right behind him. There's no reason
- 58:18Speaker 1: to come underneath here, man. There's no reason to jump
- 58:21Speaker 1: the running back out of the backfield on this man.
- 58:23Speaker 1: He's going this way. You've got your cloud corner here. Also,
- 58:29Speaker 1: he's just released out of the backfield. He's at the
- 58:31Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. Again, my line isn't straight. He got
- 58:35Speaker 1: to go a long way to get a first down.
- 58:37Speaker 1: Or even if they can play it to him, stop,
- 58:39Speaker 1: make the tackle. If they can make the tackle, they
- 58:41Speaker 1: weren't a very good tackling team last year. But still,
- 58:43Speaker 1: force fourth down, play the situation, play what you got
- 58:46Speaker 1: going on. Instead, he tries to jump underneath, or jump
- 58:49Speaker 1: the underneath, I should say, and he gets hit on
- 58:51Speaker 1: the dig right behind him. Opens up the window. These
- 58:55Speaker 1: are some of the things, again, I'm not picking on
- 58:57Speaker 1: Cole Bishop in particular, but the same kind of mistakes
- 59:07Speaker 1: that we're seeing in this Jim Leonard defense we were
- 59:10Speaker 1: seeing last year. Issues in the run fits. Issues in coverage.
- 59:16Speaker 1: I said this on social during the first or second quarter.
- 59:20Speaker 1: It's interesting, and I'm not trying to be clever or tongue-in-cheek.
- 59:23Speaker 1: It's interesting to watch players make the same kind of
- 59:28Speaker 1: mistakes or similar kind of mistakes in coverage and against
- 59:31Speaker 1: the run, despite being in a new defense, in a
- 59:34Speaker 1: new system, in a new scheme, in a new structure
- 59:37Speaker 1: with a completely brand new set of coaches, right? That's
- 59:42Speaker 1: the reason why I was bringing up, you know, the
- 59:44Speaker 1: previous plays I showed that just happened to have Bishop errors.
- 59:47Speaker 1: Those just happen to be creative plays, right? We're running
- 59:49Speaker 1: non-traditional Tampa's. He's doing one of the non-traditional things. They're
- 59:52Speaker 1: getting beat. It kind of is what it is, right?
- 59:55Speaker 1: But that's another example of him giving up something on
- 59:59Speaker 1: another creative look the year before. And we could do
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: this with some of the run fit stuff. One of
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: the big things last year, right? Guys were getting displaced
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: and pushed around against the run, but you also had
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: guys in the wrong gaps last year. They fixed that
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: a little this year, but you're still getting it this year.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: This next play that we're going to look at is
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: an example where you got two guys essentially pinning themselves
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: together in the same hole. And then what happens? We
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: give up a decent run. That's the play we're going
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: to look at now. But I think it's interesting, right?
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I'm not even trying to be clever. I'm not trying
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: to be sly or sarcastic. If you have a brand
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: new defensive coordinator and a brand new defensive staff and
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: players are making the same mistakes now that they were
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: the year before with a completely different group, what is
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: the constant? The players. At a certain point, no matter
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: how great your coaches are, at a certain point, all
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: the proverbials, right? It's Jimmy's and Joe's, not X's and O's.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: At a certain point, players got to make plays. At
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: a certain point, it's my guy versus your guy. At
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: a certain point, guys got to execute. Now, yes, it
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: is the coach's job to put them into the most
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: advantageous situations. It is the coach's job to set them
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: up for success, to teach them, to literally coach them,
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: to get them to be as prepared as possible to
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: execute in those moments, whether it's you know, they've prepped
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: amazingly or they've coached them up enough and gotten them
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: to a level where they can adjust on the fly
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: and react to things, react, attack, play with confidence, play fast,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: all of that kind of stuff, right? It is interesting
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: to note that certain guys are having certain struggles under
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: two completely different staffs who teach the game in two
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: completely different ways and ask them to do somewhat similar
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: things creatively, but also not asking them to reinvent the wheel.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: All I'm saying, and that's why I wanted to point
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: that one out. This play, this is a run fit.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: It's pretty self-explanatory as we look at it. Let's watch
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Terrell Bernard and Dorian Williams. Again, Dorian made several good
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: plays against the run in this game. Terrell Bernard made
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: several good plays in the run game. But this is
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: an example, right? Here we go. Here comes the pulling guard.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Back is going to follow him, right? Rousseau, he's playing
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: in case it's a fake, so he's going upfield, right?
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: This is not... Crazy. Both of your guys are clean
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: right here. One of you, right? Take the guard. The
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: other one plays off of that, right? As we go
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: forward here, maybe Terrell Bernard wants to be the force player, right? Set,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: cut this thing off here. Dorian Williams can fit right
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: in here. We're good. Or maybe Terrell Bernard wants to
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: wrong arm this guard, right? Play through this shoulder. Dorian, cool.
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: Scrape over the top. You're good, right? Spill and kill.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: Let's do that, right? We can force play it. We
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: can spill it. We can do whatever we want to do, right?
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: We've got two guys on one blocker. Instead, Bernard takes
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: a step outside, and I think this is what gums
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: up Dorian. He takes a step outside and then plants
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: and comes back inside. Dorian is already committed to the inside.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: And look what we get. And then Dorian tries to move,
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: but for some reason, he plants because he's relating to
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: the ball carrier, who looks like he's trying to get upfield.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: So Dorian's like, okay, let me get here. And we've
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: just got three guys who are all caught in this gap.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: No one is a forced player outside. Ball gets outside.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: Dorian tries to get off. Rousseau gets there. Again, it's
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: not the end of the world. This isn't like, oh,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: it's turned into a 40-yard gain. But this is something,
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: if we played in real time, this could have been avoided, right?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: We got two guys. where I ended up in the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: same spot. And I think, again, this is part of, right,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the feel. If you get a bunch of these reps together,
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: you know, like, oh, okay, if I'm Dorian, I know
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Bernard's going to play that inside shoulder. Let me scrape
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: over the top. Or Bernard knows, hey, Dorian knows that
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: I'm going to play this thing on the inside. I'm
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: going to spill it. He's going to go over the top.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Or vice versa. If this has happened before and Bernard knows,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: you know what, I'm going to play it outside. Dorian knows, hey,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Bernard's going to play it outside. Let me shoot this
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: thing in the hole. Instead, this guy's trying to figure
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: it out. And this is going to happen to a
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: bunch of the linebackers. Jim Leonard talked about it during
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: the preseason, I think, when talking about Terrell Bernard and
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: how his responsibilities in this defense are going to be
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: different than the previous regime because he's going to be
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: asked to do more reacting and reading of what's happening
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: in front of him and playing off of that instead
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: of having kind of static assignments. This is going to
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: happen to those linebackers. They got to read what's happening
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: in front of them, play off of it. When you
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: ask guys to do that, and they don't have time
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: on task together in this and or in this system
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: or in a new system, you see guys both kind
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: of doing the wrong thing. It's happened less in the
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: run game, but we are seeing, you know, I picked
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: this play because it happens sometimes in this game, but
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: we've seen it throughout the first three games as well, where,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: you know, multiple guys in the same gap, and then
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: the Bills defense is getting gashed for, you know, five yards,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: 10 yards, 11 yards, things like that. This was easy.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: This could have been avoided. Right? Just wanted to use that.
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: That's an example there. Oh, we're going to look at...
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: This is a good play. We're going to end on
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: a high note and a good play. Jim Jack says,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: who takes Bishop's place? Hamlin, Franklin, or Kilgore? We need
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: a trade. I don't think any of those guys. You
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: got to dance with the girl that brought you. And
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: Cole Bishop is the one who brought you. You are
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: dancing with Cole Bishop. And you hope you can coach
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: him up and he can tap into those traits and
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: the physical gifts that he has. I don't think the...
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: the answer is currently in the room. Hamlin maybe gives
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you a higher floor than Bishop, but he's just so
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: limited athletically that it's tough. Sam Franklin, I don't have
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: enough tape or faith in him as an actual safety
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and not a special teams player, so I can't say him. Kilgore,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: we have no idea because he has no NFL regular
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: season sample size experience. So I would unfortunately roll with Bishop.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: And if he's not up to snuff, you're going to
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: kind of have to eat it, and then you address
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: safety in the offseason. This question, where do you think
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: the Bills linebacker group ranks in the NFL? Not great.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: There was a site where I'm looking it up right now,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: where it has them listed by team. Where was it?
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: Hold on. Bear with me. There we go. Depth charts
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: by position. Not at the top. I don't think they're awful,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: like bottom tier, but if everybody's healthy, I mean, there's a,
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: There's a good chunk of linebacker groups that I am
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: taking over them. I can't get this site to load,
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: but I'd have to put it in front of me,
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: and I don't want to just give an off-the-cuff answer.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: I would say they're probably at best like 15th, probably
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: somewhere like 15th to like 21st, 22nd, somewhere in there,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: somewhere in that range is where I would put them.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: Ricky says, seems like Bernard should be the edge here,
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: but he thinks he's going to out-quick the guard back inside. Yeah,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: you know, he, again, he could take the edge, right?
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: He could be the force player. That's fine. Him taking
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: the inside isn't crazy. Him trying to wrong arm and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: shoot it here is fine. We just scrape over the top, right?
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: And that's, I think, where the teaching, where if we
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: know this, like, hey, we're a spill and kill type
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: of team, right? Meaning we know if we meet a puller, or,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: you know, whether it's a guard, whether it's a tight
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: end coming across and split zone, we know, Hey, we're wrong.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Arming him. Our support is coming. Well, that's too wide,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: but our support is fitting off that, you know, I'm
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: the spill guy. Second guy's the kill guy, right? That's fine.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: If we know that, or to your point, it could
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: be the opposite. We know first man takes outside shoulder,
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: shuts the door. Second guy fits in the hole. And
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: that's what we're doing. It's just getting everybody on the
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: same page. And that's why, again, this, I use this
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: example because, This is correctable. You watch this on the tape.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: You align on it. If they didn't align on it before,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: you know, now this is a thing that should be,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: in theory, easy to correct. Hey, if we get presented
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: with these situations, first man, is he the spill guy
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: or is he the force guy? Oh, he's gonna be
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: the force guy cool we know what's happening going forward
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: oh he's a spill guy cool we know what's happening
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: going forward if we're gonna play it more just where
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: we're reading what's happening in front then you're open to
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: errors but you can simplify this you can correct this
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: hey man yep first guy is the spill guy nope
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: first first guy is the force guy second guy plays
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: off that it that's that's easy that's easy to fix
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Someone here said, I remember when Anthony was like, the
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: D-line is going to struggle and the secondary would be amazing.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: I never once said the secondary would be amazing. And
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the D-line is struggling kind of more than you think.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: Rousseau has been buoyed a bit. Dion Walker's playing great.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: There's a lot of ineffectiveness across the rest of the group.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: But I never once said this quote. I never said
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: the D-line is going to struggle and the secondary would
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: be amazing. Please don't. a tribute quotes to me that
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I never said. Jason says this new defense is cool
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: because it is so complicated that we can just blame
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: whoever we want for something going wrong. No, I don't
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: think they're anything. I don't think it's blame whoever we want. One,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: thank you for being here, Jason. Two, thank you for
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: the super chat. I don't think it's that complicated. I
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: know there's probably some sarcasm here, some tongue in cheek here,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: but I don't think it's so complicated. I think He
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: is playing it more vanilla version. We're still just seeing
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: the mistakes. I don't think we've gotten to the overly
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: complicated stuff yet. Granted, playing match coverage isn't the simplest
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: thing in the world. This is a good comment here
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: from Harashu saying, it looks like everyone is trying to
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: make the right decision, but overthinking or trying to do
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: too much rather than committing to a decision and executing.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I'm going to pull up some other quotes here from
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Jim Leonard that he said in the presser this week.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: There's too much mental processing, too much communication. How do
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: we simplify it to just play fast and play confident
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: and trust what's going on around us? Guys trying to
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: make plays that they don't need to. Guys getting sped up.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Their eyes are a little bit dirty. The end of
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: a play, it severely gets dictated on the first half
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: of the play. What position do you put yourself in
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: early in the down? Are you in control or are
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: you in kind of a panic mode? And I think
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: that all summed up really well by your comment here,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: which is essentially, yeah, it looks like everyone's trying to
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: make the right decision, but overthinking or trying to do
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: too much rather than committing to a decision and executing. Yeah.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Very fair. Charles says blitz in all caps with a
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: bunch of Z's and a laughing. I mean, I'm at
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: a certain point at that too. Yeah. Like let's just,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: live by the blitz, die by the blitz. Let's play
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: fast and aggressive. Try and get the offense to make mistakes.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: If they, if they get us cool, if not cool. Um, yeah,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: it is kind of just, yeah, I, I, I'm not
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: there yet completely, but I'm close. Jason. Oh, no, thank you, Jason.
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: Jason said, I don't think you are doing that. Sorry.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: I think fans are just picking on players. They feel
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: like picking on appreciate breaker. No, no, no. I didn't
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: say you. I apologize. Apologies. If you thought that, uh,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: or I made it seem like I thought that was
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: directed towards me. No, I, um, it is very interesting.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: I do think it, what's also really telling and really
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: funny is posting. Like for me, I'll post a clip
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: on social and it's a bad result. And there will
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: be two guys who had a horrible rep on that play.
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: But one guy is somebody that fans like, and one
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: guy is someone that fans don't. And everybody notices the
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: one they don't like. And no one notices the guy
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: that's been hyped. Um, Dwayne Carter has surpassed my expectations
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: this year, and he's become a fairly decent rotational guy.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: For as much of the success as he's had this year,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: he's spent just as much time on the ground, like
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: getting bodied and trucked. And I post those clips and
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: don't call him out to see if anybody's going to
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: pick up on it, and no one picks up on it.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: Dwayne Carter's getting– there's a play where the Patriots are
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: on trap in this game. And Carter literally gets clocked
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: by the guard. He falls for the influence block. It's,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: it's hit by the trapper gets put down to the ground,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: but Dorian doesn't fit the run properly and kind of
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: walks into a block. And so many people kept commenting like,
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: what is Dorian doing here? What is Dorian doing here?
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: And not one person was like, man, Carter got blown up. Um,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: and you're seeing that Walker takes himself out of plays
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: at times. Um, Several of the defensive linemen just look
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: very inept when rushing one-on-one, but nobody notices that. But
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: every time Hairston or Benford give up a completion, everybody's
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: ready to jump down their throat. So, yeah, I think
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: you're spot on, Jason. It's unfortunate at times. Pump Pass
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Click says, if they can't process run man instead of zone,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: this isn't rocket science. Fair, but you still need to
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: have the horses to be able to run man. And
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: it would be nice if you were good in it. Unfortunately,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: the Buffalo Bills defense, when in man coverage, has a 37.5
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: defensive success rate and a plus 0.5 EPA per play allowed.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: The league average for defenses in man coverage this year
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: for success rate is 56.6%. So the league average is 56.6.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: The Bills, they're at 37.5. The league average for EPA
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: per play allowed is flat 0.00%. The bills are at 0.5.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: They're allowing a half a point, almost a half, not
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: even almost they're allowing a half point added per play
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: when in man coverage. And they're allowing, they're essentially allowing
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: offenses to succeed almost 64% of the time. I'm sorry,
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: 62% of the time. Um, yeah, they're, they're not good
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: in man. Like they're losing in man, like they're losing
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: in zone. Um, And so it's not like, oh, there's
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: a simple solution. They haven't tried yet. They're getting shelled
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: in that too. Christian says, is there anything about the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: potential kill or activation that intrigues you? I think he's
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: a great athlete. I like the length. I like the
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: movement capability. I wish he played more physical for his size,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: but I felt that way even watching him at South
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: Carolina when he was more of a nickel. I just
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: think he needs to he needs to learn how to
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: play safety more, right? He was more of a pure
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: nickel in put myself back on the screen here. He
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: was more of a pure nickel at South Carolina. He's
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: got to learn to play safety. It's a, it's a
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: different vantage point. It's a different way to see the
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: game process the game, but I love the athleticism. I
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: think I thought he was well worth the day three pick,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: you know, see if you can tap into those traits.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: He's got the athleticism. We'll see if it can play.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: The size and the athleticism in that package is cool.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I still just don't think he's ready to play NFL
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: reps yet. I said this on social during the past
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: couple days or maybe on Sunday. Even a lot of
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: the plays he was making in camp, and I'm saying
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: this as a person who was there in person at
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: camp for several days, he would get a pass breakup
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: in camp, but he got beat. He didn't realize somebody
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: was getting in behind him and somebody's five, six yards
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: open downfield passed him. but then Shane Buchel or Kyle
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Allen under throws it. Kilgore is able to recover and
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: make a play on it, but he got beat. Like
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: his eyes weren't in the right place or his technique
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: wasn't there. So I do think there's time on task
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: needed for him in a learning process that is needed. Um,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: but I really like his athleticism. I liked him as
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: a player, um, at South Carolina. I watched a ton
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: of South Carolina games the past several years and tape, um,
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: going back to scout and even worry the year before.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: And then a bunch of dudes like Tonka Hemingway and
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: TJ Sanders and all those dudes. And then, um, Demetrius
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Knight or whatever his first name is, the linebacker from
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: South Carolina two years ago. So yeah, he's fun. He's fun.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: He's fun. He's fun. Take this hope away. Put this
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: back here. Charles says, you know, who's got an amazing
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: defense every year. Flores Flores is an outlier. Nobody blitzes
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: like that. Like he's just an absolute guru in that regard.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: He also has, he also has the players who fit
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: that scheme. Like he knows what he wants and he
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: gets those guys, right? So it's a guy who knows
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: what he's doing, who has a very unique brand of
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: defense that also gets got by good quarterbacks because that's
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: just the nature of it. But he also has the
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: guys that fit the system. Pump, pass, click. I'm assuming
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: you saying wow was when I read the man coverage stuff. Yeah,
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: it's not good. Like that was one of the first
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: things I looked at. I was like, I wonder what
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: their stats are. I did this last night. I was like,
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: I wonder what their stats are in man coverage. and
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: not good. Jason says, just play cover six. Like, Oh
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: my God, that's funny. Uh, Oh, Christian says, yeah, as
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: a South Carolina student, I am quite frustrated by the
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: talent level yet amount of failed execution on this football team. Uh, LMAO.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: Don't remind me too much. Yeah. I, um, when I
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: got college football 24, I picked South Carolina as my
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: dynasty team. Um, cause it was M and worries final year.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Kilgore was young. Dylan Stewart, um, Lenora sellers, Harbor rocket Sanders,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: like all these dudes. I was like, Oh, this is
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: pretty fun. And yeah, I wrote with them for like
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: five years. Um, I love their uniform combinations. They're in
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: the sec, but they're not like a power sec team. Um,
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: so yeah, I, I, uh, they have a kill war
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: as a soft spot. Cause those South Carolina dudes, I
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: won like three straight titles in a college football 24.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm a fan. No worries. Pump ass clicks
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: as yes. Awful. I appreciate you rallying them off. I
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: know it's rough. It's tough. Uh, Harper says, I'm sure
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: it's been addressed. And, but how do you, but how
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: do you think it is for Hairston? Rephrase that. I'm
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: assuming how you think. I think what I think he
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: is as a player, rephrase that just to make sure
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: there's not a typo there. And I want to make
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: sure I know what you're asking and I will circle
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: back to it. I'm going to get to the last
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: play here. because this is a fun one. This is
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: a positive one. This is a fun coverage spin from
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Jim Leonard and the Bills defense. First thing you should notice,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: there's three safeties in here for the Bills. We got
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: a three high safety look. Some Iowa State defense stuff,
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: some Arizona Cardinals stuff. Not a lot of teams do
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: the three high stuff. We've got three high, and it's
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: being done with three safeties. So we've got a three safety,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: three high look. We are going to play quarters, and
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: we're also going to drop eight in two coverage. And
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: then we're going to look at some more things, right?
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: So here we go. Let's first thing we're going to watch,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: watch DeMar Hamlin. DeMar Hamlin is going to play top
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: down as like a high hole middle hook player. So
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: we've got this three high look. You could do a multiple,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: a multitude of stuff out of this, right? You could
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: play cover three, drop this guy down, drop this guy down,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: make him be the post safety, right? You could go
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: either way opposite. You could put him into the post,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: put him here, You know, you could do the inverse
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: of that, right? You know, put him into the post,
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: go here. There's a multitude of things you could do.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: You could play man coverage out of this and have
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: two whole players. There's a multitude of coverages, right? You
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: could do Tampa 2 stuff. Here, it's just quarters. Hamlin
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: as the middle of those three safeties. He's playing top down.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: It's like a high hole, middle hook player. He does
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: a good job picking up the dig. Look at that.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: Closes down on it. Good job by DeMar Hamlin. Cancels
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: that thing out. Let's look at the drop eight aspect
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: of it. We've got four on the defensive line. We've
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: got Greg Rousseau. We've got Ed Oliver. We've got Michael Hoyt.
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: We've got Bradley Chubb. We're going to snap the ball.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: We're only going to rush three. And here's Hoyt chilling
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: as a little hole player, but also as kind of
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: like a quasi spy, right? In case May breaks out,
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: he's scrambling. Let's keep an eye on him a little bit.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: Regular watchers of the show know how much I love
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: Odd Mirror. Um, this is not that, but I love
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: a good low hole player and aggressive spy. Um, so
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: tap into that, you know, in a quasi nature here,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: and then we are going to get quarters right everywhere.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: So I like the initial three high safety. Look, I
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: like that. We're pairing that with a drop eight aspect.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: I like this top down nature that Hamlin is playing with.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: And now we're going to get quarters. We got our
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: nickel here offered. He is going to carry the vertical
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: from the slot. Hamlin's going to match it. He sees
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: the back coming out of the backfield. He's got to
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: honor that, so that's why he kind of passes off
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: Pop Douglas, and Jamar Hamlin takes him. Let's go to
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: the bottom of the screen here. Where am I? Only
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: two eligibles down here, right? We've got the number one
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: in Hollins and the number two in Hunter Henry. Pretty
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: easy here. Hunter Henry blocks. He essentially cancels himself. So
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: now this is very easy. Igben Nosen is going to
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: take him. All Cole Bishop has to do is help
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: squeeze that. You could do other things too, right? When
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: you are in, you know, this quarters defense, and again,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: it can vary based off of, you know, the exact call,
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: what's happening, what you're doing in terms of, you know,
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: are you going to, you know, kind of go more
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: towards the post? There's different rules and things you can do,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: but traditionally, if we are just playing, you know, quarters
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: as it normally is, I should say like is played.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: All Cole Bishop has to do here because the number
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: two to this side has kind of canceled himself out.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: Play your quarter and then help squeeze the number one
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: if he goes vertical, right? That's all we got to
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: do here. Igbenosin is on Hollins. There's nowhere really for
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: Drake May to go on this play. It's a second
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: and 10. What is ironic, and I realize that I
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: like this coverage. I genuinely think it's a nice creative thing.
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: The Bills do a pretty good job. It is funny, though,
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: that Bishop eyes Hollins and then peeks in the backfield
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: and essentially kind of gets beat over the top. And
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: Hollins does have a step initially on Igbenosin, but Igbenosin
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: has good recovery speed. This is a long throw, you know,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: not a high chance of success. I'm going to play
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: it in real time a couple times, but this is
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: a nice coverage spin. Caleb alarms or as let me
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: pause it here. Oh, right here. He is got an
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: eye on the tight end. So if the tight end releases,
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: he'll pick him up and take him there. He's got
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: like the seam flat. Like this is good, right? Top
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: of the screen. Hairston outside has Dobbs. So Alford is
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: relating to the two. And then relates to the running
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: back coming out of the backfield after he carries the
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: number two upfield. Hamlin closes down on the number two
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: on the dig, erases that. Hairston's in decent position on Dobbs.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: He's there with him the whole way. Grabs him a
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: little bit at the top of the route. Here's Hairston, right?
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: He's on Dobbs. Eyes on hips slash torso looking down.
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Not going to get misled. Let's use our eyes, our technique,
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: our feet. Dobbs tries to break. Hairston does grab him
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: a little bit. Really good hip sink from Dobbs. Hairston,
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: you could call that very easily in the NFL for
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: legal contact or defensive holding, but they don't. He's able
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: to stay there. Again, Hollins gets over the top on Bishop,
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: but he knows he's able to recover and do something there.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: I like this coverage, genuinely. I wanted to end on
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: a good note because this is creative, right? Some of
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: the things earlier that we were saying that were a
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: little taste of the creative, right? The non-traditional Tampa stuff,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: paired with a creeper, paired with a sim. That's a
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: little taste, but this one's cool. And we didn't really
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: see this under Sean McDermott. We weren't seeing three high,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: you know, three safety, three high stuff. We'd see drop eight.
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: We'd see quarters, but a three high or three safety,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: three high drop eight. Nice. And they do a good
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: job executing it. And again, good job by DeMar Hamlin.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: Really good rep on this one. Drops into that as
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: that top top down. middle hook type of player, high
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: hole player, bang, cancels out on that dig. Eeyore takes
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: Hunter Henry coming out of the backfield, or I'm sorry,
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: coming off of the block on Rousseau into the boundary. Hoyt,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: low hole player, quasi-spy, eyes on May, shades to the
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: running back a little bit, releasing. Him and Alford have
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: that on lock after Alford carries and almost kind of
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: delivers pop to DeMar Hamlin before he falls off. This
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: is nice. See? Hope. Granted, Bischoff kind of gets beat,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: you know, over the top. But hey, beggars can't be choosers, right?
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: Am I right or am I right? So not great
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: in certain times, right? Not ideal in all parts, but
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: I wanted to end on a positive note because I
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: do think there is hope overall. Man, it's... They're... There's
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: going to continue to be growing pains. I said this
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: in the offseason of them not bringing in the body
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: types or the archetypes. I thought, like I said earlier,
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: to lead off this episode, right? I thought that would
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: impact the ceiling of the defense this year. But it
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: would also end up leading to more growing pains because
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: you've got to get more dudes who aren't familiar with
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: the system You've got to get them familiar with the
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: system and playing in different ways. Now, for some of
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the guys, it's worked out better, right? Greg Rousseau, the
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: sack numbers, the pressure numbers, he's lining up in a
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: two-point stance far more than he ever did. If I
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: remember correctly, going into this past week against New England,
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: he was in a two-point stance the first three weeks 99.1%
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: of the time. Previously, I think last year, he was
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: in a two-point stance 37.5% of the time. And then
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: he rushed from a two point stance last year, about
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: 86% of the time this year, it's 99 again or 97.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: So he's playing a two point stance a ton. It's
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: got him seeing the game better using his length, using
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: his stride, creating angles for him, right? You're seeing a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: guy like that respond to the new defense. So that's encouraging, right?
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: But then you've got other guys who are still trying
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: to iron out the kinks. And when you are changing everything,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: and not bringing in new guys, right? This is essentially
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: the same defense as it was last year from a
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: roster standpoint. You've got a couple of changes and a
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: couple of additions, but you haven't added new body types.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: You haven't added new archetypes, positional archetypes really. And you've
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: got some dudes who are just learning how to play together, right?
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: You bring in D Alford. He hasn't played with this group.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: You bring in Chauncey Gardner Johnson. He hasn't played with
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: this group. Hairston played last year, but now he's in
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: a new defense and is still kind of a rookie
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: with all the time he missed last year. Davidson Igbenosin
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: is a straight-up rookie. It's a new system for Benford,
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: new system for Bernard, new system for Dorian, who is
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: still adjusting to playing as a regular down NFL player
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: and hadn't even earned that job yet. He's in a
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: new defense. There's going to be growing pains. But I
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: wanted to end on that positive note because, again, another
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: glimpse of creativity, but that one worked. There are ways
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: to get around it. I do think this defense will stabilize,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: but right now it is ugly. There are gaps. in coverage.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: There are some poor run fits. The numbers are all
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: messy and wonky for a lot of stuff. Like even
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: the Patriots game, I know how much they pressured the
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: Patriots in that game. And I think it was like
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: a 44% pressure rate or something like that, which is good.
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: But there were a lot of times where may have like,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: oodles of time. Like they're not getting quick pressures, like
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: they're getting pressures, but it's like later in the play.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: So some of the pressure stuff is muddy. I think
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: everything with the bills defense is muddy right now in
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: a lot of ways, but at the crux of all
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: of it, it is underwhelming. It is worrisome. They do
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: have some stuff to clean up. The good news is,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: is I think they can clean up some of it.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I think they can clean up enough to stabilize and
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: not be a complete vulnerability or deficiency. Or I hope, um, yeah,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: The comment here is, knowing there's going to be growing
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: pains is one thing. Actually watching them happen is rough.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: That's a fair point. Oh, I got to stop here.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: We got a super chat. Jason says, okay, I see
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: your holiday tree is going through growing pains as well.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: It isn't there yet in terms of being the holiday
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: tree we expect. False. I love this tree, the purple
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: and orange garland. The issue is the pumpkin tree topper
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: is heavy, so it tilts the tree a little bit
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the longer it's on the tree. I also haven't decided
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: what I want to do with the pumpkins and the
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: little kitty cat. Um, cause I don't want to block
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: the tree, but I feel like they need to be
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: more over here, but I don't want to block the tree,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: but I'm very happy with the tree. I had little
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: black garland or black garland with little ghosts on them,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: but it was hard to see the ghost. And I
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: like the purple and orange. I might re rearrange the garland,
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: but again, it gets, the tree is smaller and lighter.
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: The topper, I feel like weighs more than the tree.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: And so it kind of skews things a little bit. Um,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: Jason also, you said, can you explain why Groot is
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: so wide in these? Oh, so like in that last one,
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: he's that wide because of the tight end being kind
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: of like detached from the formation, but still close. So
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: he's trying to keep everything inside of him and not
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: play inside where he can get kind of cracked or
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: pushed or messed up by the tight end. Also, he
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: can kind of reroute the tight end as necessary if
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: they want him to do something, but it also creates
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: an advantageous kind of rush angle for him. depending on
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: what the tight end does, but it's more of just him.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: You're reacting to the tight end, right? You're not just
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: playing inside that end man on the line of scrimmage, right?
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: You want to be the end man on the line
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: of scrimmage. So if there's a tight end on the line,
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: but he's kind of detached, you're going to be outside
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: of him. If that makes sense, which question here, which, Oh, sorry.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: I got to go back to from Harper. Harper said,
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: I'm sure it has been addressed, but how over do
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: you think it is for Harrison? I don't think it's over.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: He is a kind of like a come to Jesus
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: moment a little bit though, somewhat of a crossroads, right?
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: You've got effort concerns. You've got execution and technique concerns
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: in coverage. You already had tackling concerns, no still exists.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: And now you've got maybe some like effort concerns or
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: some attitude concerns. So he's got to shape up. You know,
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: when Benford comes back, Igben Nosen made some plays. I
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: don't think Hairston has been as bad as this past
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: game indicated in terms of a coverage standpoint. I don't
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: think he was as good as some of like whatever
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: those coverage metrics were that got published like last week
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: saying how good he was or whatever he was doing.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: But I don't think it's over for him, but he's
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: got to shape up. And as of right now, like
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: I feel like if Christian Benford came back this week,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: I feel like Hairston might be bumped to CB3 just because,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: you know, He's just been inconsistent. And the effort thing,
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: it's one thing to get beaten coverage or to see
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: the wrong thing. It's something else to just give up
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: on the game-sealing or clinching play. Not good. So I
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: don't think it's over for him. But I don't think
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: it's good right now. If 10 out of 10 was
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: it being over for him, I would say he's at
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: like a 7 or a 6.5. I want to get
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: to this question. Which player is struggling right now? Are
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: you most optimistic for improving by the end of the year?
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: Christian Bedford. Christian Bedford. I know he didn't play in
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: this game, so we didn't break him down, but I
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: would say Christian Bedford. Because again, it's relative, right? How
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: much do I think they can improve and how much
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: they're struggling right now? I think Bishop is struggling a lot.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: Harrison is struggling a lot. I'm not optimistic about either
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: of those. I'm probably more optimistic about Bishop than Harrison. Um,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: but I think Cole Bishop is still much more traits
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: than he is football player right now. Um, Benford, I
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: think just needs to settle down a little bit as
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: stupid as that sounds. Jason says the pumpkin tree topper
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: is like root. It's so good. It makes everything else
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: look bad. That's funny. Charles says, Dion has been amazing,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: and the new scheme has unlocked Groot. Secondary has to
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: catch up, but we got dudes. Maybe, maybe. Adrian says,
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: do you think the defense would benefit from a veteran
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: presence such as Stravius White and Shaq Thompson? Yeah, why not?
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: Get some vets in the room. Again, they're not system
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: vets who know everything. I would start Shaq Thompson today,
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: right now. I just think he stabilizes things, and I
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: still think he has some juice in the tank. Appreciate you, Jason.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: No worries, no worries. Asa says, stop the hate on Harrison.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: He will grow, hopefully. Hopefully, hopefully. Charles says, Harrison doesn't
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: play like the fastest man on the field. Gives way
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: too much space. Harper says, the Henry play isn't excusable.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: That's fair. Yeah. Christian says, before the season, one of
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: the things that you hoped to see from Leonard was
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: some matchup-dependent scheme change-up. Do you think he's done that
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: so far? Um... not really. Um, I think, and I
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: think that's tied to something I've said on social in
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: some questions that have been posed to me. I don't think,
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I don't think that Leonard thinks he can call everything
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: that he wants to right now. I think he knows
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: there's certain parts, certain pages in the menu that he
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: can't even turn to right now. Um, And because of that,
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: you know, if you can't call certain things or run
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: certain things, you can't be fully, hey, you know, this
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: team struggles with A, B, and C. So here's what
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: we're going to do. So we're going to do X, Y,
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: and Z. But if you're not confident that you can
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: do X and Y, your game planning is limited. Your
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: matchup stuff is limited. I do think there's some elements
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: of like, hey, you know, these are the coverages we're
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: going to run this week or the way we're going
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: to run them or how we're going to attack or
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: the games we're going to play up front. I think
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: you're seeing it sometimes there, but so much of it
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: is tied to what they're capable of on the back end,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: and I don't think he feels confident. Again, even with
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: the last coverage play I showed, the three safety, three
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: high stuff, and the non-traditional Tampa stuff, all that stuff
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: I showed in this episode, that's about as exotic as
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: he's gotten from a coverage standpoint, and that's not even
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: very exotic for league standards or for him. Even the
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: stuff we're seeing up front, We're not seeing a lot
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: of like, whoa, look at that pressure package. Look how
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: we game this up. It's a lot of basic movement stuff.
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: It's end tackle stunts. It's tackle end stunts. It's just
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: two-man games. We're running twists on the inside between the
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: defensive tackles. It's not this, man, the way they gamed
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: up this offense's protection rules. It's a lot of just
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: more vanilla type of movement. And I know he's not
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: a vanilla guy. I don't think he's Rex Ryan levels
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: of exotics. or Mike McDonald levels of exotic. But he's
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: more exotic than what he's done thus far from a
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: coverage standpoint and from a front structure standpoint. And I
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: don't think he feels comfortable or confident running that stuff
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: because the 100-level stuff that he's running, guys aren't executing that,
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: so he's not going to get further. Harper said, how
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: about Dion's comments on GR? I heard some of them
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: and was not a fan. And was not a fan.
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: You know what I am a fan of? The best
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo, New York. One pie pizza, sweet sauce pie,
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: cup of charred pepperoni, homemade blue cheese. It does not
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: get better than one pie pizza. If the Bills are
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: making you sad or you're worried about what's going to
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: happen when they play the Rams next week, drown your
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: sorrows in the best pizza in Buffalo, New York. I
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: do not say that because they sponsor the show. They
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: sponsor the show because I sincerely believe they are the
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: best pizza in Buffalo, New York. Again, sweet sauce pie,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: great cheese and sauce ratio. The sauce is homemade. They
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: have a multitude of specialty pies, a breakfast pizza. They
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: have a catering division called Elevated Catering of Buffalo. They
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: give back to the community in a multitude of forms
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: and fashions. I'm moving around too much and kind of
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: putting the camera out of focus. Partnering with Roswell, partnering
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: with the SPCA, the Alzheimer's Foundation, Toys for Tots, right
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: around the corner. That drive is always tremendously successful for
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: them each year and a great way for them to
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: give back to the community and you know, give you
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: an opportunity to win some cool prizes. A lot of
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: it is bills and sabers, merch, tickets, autographs, a whole
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: bunch of stuff like that. So if you live in
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: Buffalo or you're visiting at some point or you've got
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: family here, you're coming up for the holidays, whatever you're
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: passing through, get yourself some one pie pizza. You will
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: not be disappointed. It is sincerely the best pizza in Buffalo.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: If you're doing an event, you want some catering, call
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: them up. You can get the catering division. They do
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: real food, mac and cheese dishes, chicken and rice, salads,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: a whole bunch of stuff. And then you can still
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: get the pizzas on top. So get yourself some one
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: pie pizza. I'm gonna throw up the banner that says
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: toodles folks now because we're gonna start to say goodbye
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: but i am gonna grab some questions before we go
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: how often and well do the bills run the ball
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: with kincaid on the field this season is kincaid a
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: tell for defenses he's a tell for defenses in it's
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: not true dress too drastic when he's on the field
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: I think the run-to-pass ratio was like 60-40 pass-to-run, so
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: it's not too dramatic. What is dramatic leading into the
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Patriots game, I think the rate of runs that are
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: run towards him when he's on the field. So when
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: Kincaid's on the field and a run play is called,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: the percentage of runs that are ran towards him, I
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: believe it was like 25% heading into the Patriots week.
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: That was 59th or 52nd out of 59 or 52
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: qualifying tight ends and fullbacks. Darren Waller was the second
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: lowest and he was at like 37 and a half.
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: So the big tell is if Kincaid is on the field,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: they're not running to him. Doesn't mean they're going to
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: pass it a ton. Granted, it's like six out of 10,
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: which is still fairly good odds, but that's not crazy.
- 1:39:38Speaker 1: But if they run it, it's not getting run towards him.
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: That's a significant tell. Like it's only being ran towards
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: him 25% of the time. That's a crazy tell. Agent says,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: do you think the secondary struggles are the reason for
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: Jim Leonard's lack of aggressiveness? Because I feel like I'm
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: watching Sean McDermott's defense again. I do. I do. I do.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: I do think they are the source of the struggles.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Greenlight says, what's the kind of defense that plays the
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: DB 13 yards off the ball on a fourth and three?
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: The kind of defense where an individual player makes a mistake?
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: Thomas says they'll be tighter in space and guys will
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: grow inside the scheme as the season goes and going
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: to the playoffs, being at their peak. But like you're saying,
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: it's not air personally on defense. So, Faith, we'll see.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: We'll see. We'll see. We'll see. I do think, I
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: don't think it's unrealistic to think that they'll stabilize and
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: gel a little bit. It's just a matter of how
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: much does that help them, right? I didn't think they'd
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: be 25th and below in a lot of stuff. I
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: thought they'd be like already like 19th, 20th, and maybe
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: they could go up to like 14th. right now they're
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: like 25th to 30th and everything. So it's like, okay,
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: can they go up to 19th? Like, and that should
- 1:40:46Speaker 1: be enough. Um, but yeah, man, not great. Jason knows
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: what's up. He says, I get upset when I see
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: those crispy pepperonis on the one pie pizza and I'm
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: not local to get a fresh one. They look so good.
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: They are so good. I'm sorry. RJ says, I may
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: not be positive on the bills right now, but I
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: am positive at one pie is amazing. Phenomenal. Also a
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: fair comment here from Charles. I'm really hoping Leonard is
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: saving some of his pressure looks for bigger games down
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: the road. I think that's fair. Um, I do think
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: he's not confident in throwing everything that he can. But...
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: I think that's a fair point. Who's playing... Man, you're
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: just hitting me with all kinds of questions and qualifiers
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: and rankings. I kind of like it, but it also
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: makes me nervous. Who's playing better between Dorian and Bernard?
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: Bernard has been better... then he's getting credit for it. Granted,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: some of his ugly has been really ugly, but he's
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: been making plays that aren't getting talked about. He's made
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: positive plays that aren't getting talked about. I think it's close.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: I'd probably say Dorian if I had to, which I
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: do because I have to answer this question. Well, I
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: don't have to, but I'd say Dorian, but they're close.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: It's 6-1, half a dozen to the other, but I'll
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: lean Dorian. Joey says, what odds do we put this
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: week's matchup at week and win? Oh, the Bills can
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: definitely win this game against the Rams. Even if it's
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: high scoring, the Bills can win this game. Like, this
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: isn't crazy. The Rams have also underperformed as well. They
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: were the hands down Super Bowl favorites. They're two and two.
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: They could easily be one and three. Their only good
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: win or quick commencing one was against the Giants when
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: Jackson Dart tore his knee. And before that, they were
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: looking kind of shaky. So this can definitely be one
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: for the Bills. TVB says, any thoughts on Kilgore? He's
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: my favorite player they added this season. I like the traits.
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: I like the athleticism. I like the size and athleticism package.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: I don't think he's there yet in terms of seeing
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: the game from a true safety position. I don't trust
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: him in terms of decision-making and the mentality needed. I
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: mentioned this earlier, too. Even some of the plays that
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: he was making in camp were more due to errors
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: on the offense. Some of the plays he was making deep,
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: guys were running past him, and he wasn't just playing
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: with technique and playing with good eyes. I think he
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: needs a good amount of time on task before he
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: can be a regular contributor. But I'm hopeful for him
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: in the future because I like the traits. I like
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: the size. I like the athleticism. All that in one package.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: It's fun and encouraging. So I hope they can just
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: use him as more of a true safety and get
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: him to be more of a real football player than
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: just an athlete. And I'm hopeful for him. But I'm
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: not expecting much from him right now. Hope you folks
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: enjoyed this episode. If you did, again, please, please, please

- 1:44:55Speaker 1: will be posting a bunch of stuff on the Bills offense,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: you know, from a film perspective, the next couple of
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: days on my socials. Then I'll be getting into some
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: Ram stuff from a tape perspective and a metric standpoint
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: to get ready for that matchup. And then I'll be
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: diving into just random players and position groupings across the NFL,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: as I do to always kind of stay up on
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: everything and also cleanse the palette and just find fun
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: stuff to watch and look at based on what's happened
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: in the league. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday night.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: Enjoy the rest of your week. I see all the
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: kind words that are coming through as we close out
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: the show for myself. I don't pull them up because
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: I think it's corny because I'm by myself and it's
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: like I'm just patting myself on the back. But I
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: see all those comments. I sincerely appreciate them and I
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: thank you for them. So again, thank you to everyone
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: who tuned in live. Thank you to anyone who consumed
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: this episode and whatever form or fashion views, listens, downloads, whatever.
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: Thank you very much to you, Jason, for your three
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: super chats. I appreciate it. And again, yeah, thank you
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: for all the kind words. I really appreciate it. I
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: will likely be doing more film episodes soon. on this
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: going forward, whether it's whether I'm doing them live on
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: Tuesday nights at nine, or if I'm doing them offline
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: and uploading them on Tuesday nights in this slot or
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: random spots. But essentially from now on, consider disguise coverage,
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: largely a film based show mixed in with advanced metrics.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: So yeah, hope you folks enjoyed it. Enjoy the rest
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: of your week. Enjoy your Tuesday. I hope you and
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: your family and friends and loved ones are all doing
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: well and staying safe. Kind to one another. Take care
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: of one another. I will see you when I see you. Godspeed.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: And as always, go Bills.
