Transcript
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Daily Writer, where we share a lesson each day to help you cultivate the habits for creative success.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: If there's one thing that is true about writing, it's that it requires a lot of emotional energy.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Even professional writers confess to only being able to write for a few hours a day.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And that is why we must stay emotionally healthy.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: One of the things that sucks your emotional energy almost more than anything else is worrying about things that you can't control.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Corey Tinboom was a Dutch watchmaker who worked with her family to help Jews escape from the Nazis in World War II.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Along with her family, she was later arrested and sent to a concentration camp for a time.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: She said this: worrying is carrying tomorrow's load with today's strength, carrying two days at once.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: Worrying doesn't empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Now that's great advice, but it's almost impossible to follow, isn't it?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: We're worried about getting our work done.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: We're worried about how many people are going to read it.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: We're worried about that client paying us on time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: We're worried about what the next year or five or ten years hold for us and our writing careers.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: But when you look at the struggles and difficulties of somebody like Corey Tinboom or anybody who's literally fought for their lives, our struggles and our worries as writers seem to pale by comparison.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: You know, there's very little that we can actually control in this life.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: In fact, the only thing that we truly control is what we do on a daily basis, our daily actions.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: So whenever you feel worried or stressed, take a deep breath, go for a walk, count your blessings, and invest your emotional energy into the things that only you can control.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Well, I want to thank my friend Debbie Oliver for sharing this quote with me.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I had not heard of this quote before, and I'm so thankful that she did.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So, Debbie, thanks for sharing this.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening to today's episode.
