- 1:24SPEAKER_04: Hey, welcome back to Designing Building the Midwest one community at a time.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Chris, and with this podcast where we talk about people, the businesses, the project, and the ideas that are helping build a stronger Midwest.
- 1:36SPEAKER_04: Because here's the thing we just don't build houses, we build relationships, we build businesses, we build communities, and we build a future where people who call this place home.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: And that's what this community segment is all about.
- 1:48SPEAKER_04: Today we're stepping away from the job site for a little while and shining the spotlight on a local business that has become a big part of our community.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: You've heard us talk about SIPS coffee on the podcast before with Lindy.
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: And uh we've had Lindy with us, we've had Lindy and Caitlin together, and today we're bringing in the other half of that team.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: He's a businessman, he's a community supporter, he's a husband and somebody who understands that building successful business is about a whole lot more than just making money.
- 2:13SPEAKER_04: Ryan Cleman is joining us today.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: Ryan, welcome to the studio.
- 2:17SPEAKER_04: Buddy, thanks for being here.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, excited to be here, Chris.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: You know, thanks for having us.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: So we said it's gonna be the guy's day to day.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: That's right.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: Caitlin and Lindy have been uh, you know, they they've been filming with without us for the past couple weeks, and it's gonna be me and you today.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: I'm excited to be here.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: We got it.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: We got it, definitely.
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: Hey, tell us a little bit about Ryan and and who Ryan is.
- 2:36SPEAKER_04: A lot of people know the Ryan Kleeman name around town, but let our listeners and followers that don't know you know who you are.
- 2:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I'm right, Kleeman.
- 2:45SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm born and raised in Carlinville, went to high school in Carlinville, built roots here, right?
- 2:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, Lindy is my wife.
- 2:51SPEAKER_05: We got married in July.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, congrats on that.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_05: She's also a fellow business owner in town, right?
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: Sips, I think it's right over our shoulder.
- 2:58SPEAKER_05: It is, it is.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: They are the official drink sponsor of the podcast.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: We love it.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: And and uh, you know, we I tell you what, Chris, we saw what you guys were doing out in the community on this podcast and everything.
- 3:08SPEAKER_05: And I remember I said to you and we we talked it out, and I said, I love what you're doing.
- 3:13SPEAKER_05: I remember we had that meeting in Lichfield, right at the office.
- 3:15SPEAKER_05: So yeah, I'm just I'm excited to partner with you.
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: Um, I see over in the corner there we got a Macuba County CEO thing.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: I was part of that program as well.
- 3:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:23SPEAKER_05: So you do a lot for the community.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: When we talked, we were spitballing a different the different segments that we could bring to the podcast here, and we said community was it.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: So it is.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: It is because it opens up where we can talk about your business, your wife's business, other businesses, and community events and or individuals that are making a difference in the community.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: And that's what it's about because at the end of the day, without a strong community, you don't have strong people in it.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: I mean, you just have a bunch of houses sitting around, right?
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: So, well, hey, let's roll into, you know, the dynamic duo, right?
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: The day job, and let's start with sips.
- 3:59SPEAKER_04: Everybody knows Lindy.
- 4:01SPEAKER_04: She's certainly become that recognizable face out there, right?
- 4:04SPEAKER_04: Sips coffee and the third location's getting ready to open September 1.
- 4:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, September 1st.
- 4:09SPEAKER_04: She's actually there right now.
- 4:10SPEAKER_04: That's that's one reason why she can't be here today.
- 4:12SPEAKER_04: Hey, we got this on lock.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: We're fine.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: We're fine.
- 4:14SPEAKER_04: We're good.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: But behind every successful business, there's usually a team making it happen, right?
- 4:19SPEAKER_04: So tell us a little bit about how you and Lindy work together and what your role looks like behind the scenes.
- 4:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I'll I'll tell you this.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: The journey of SIP started a couple years ago.
- 4:29SPEAKER_05: I would say almost two years ago now, to where she was bugging me in the fall of 2024, and it is the the summer of 2026, coming on fall of 2026 now, and she kept bugging me about how she wanted to be a business owner as well.
- 4:42SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: You know, my dad's a business owner, Clean Transport, Hall's Milk for Pray Farms.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Shout out to Kleeman.
- 4:48SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, all good.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: He employs uh, you know, about I think 12 people in the local area.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:53SPEAKER_05: You know, good paying jobs, a very well-established operation.
- 4:56SPEAKER_05: So I mean she she kept bugging me because I mean I've had my business, my dad has his business.
- 5:00SPEAKER_05: You've had multiple businesses, yeah, yeah, multiple businesses, right?
- 5:03SPEAKER_05: And she's like, I want to open a business, right?
- 5:06SPEAKER_05: So she kept bugging me about it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: I remember we were on our way to my grandma's on Christmas Eve of 2024, actually.
- 5:11SPEAKER_05: And I finally told her, I said, you know, fine, let's try it, let's do it.
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: And then she sent me the Verdon location about a week later and said, and I I knew the there was a connection there to where I through local business to where I knew the the people that owned the property, and I connected her at the time, and the rest is kind of history, guys.
- 5:31SPEAKER_05: I mean, we started building that location, you know.
- 5:33SPEAKER_05: I'm behind the scenes, you know, helping her out.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: She bounces ideas off me.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: You know, we're we're a partnership in a way, right?
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: To where so she brought she brought the the coffee part of it, and you brought the business wise part of it, right?
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, probably a mentorship aspect, you know.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: I I'm sure you know about mentors, Chris.
- 5:50SPEAKER_05: I mean a little bit, you know, she doesn't like to view me as a mentor, probably, but she's always bouncing ideas off me at night, you know, what she's doing.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: And that's a great partnership.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: Spouse, spouse and or even business partners, because but it's her business, I think, right?
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: It's a hundred percent.
- 6:05SPEAKER_04: Her business, but but your partners in life together, yeah, as husband and wife.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: And so you you always want to be able to open talk or talk openly with your spouse about things like that.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:15SPEAKER_04: And that's great.
- 6:16SPEAKER_04: You guys have that relationship.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:18SPEAKER_04: And that's what people really don't always see, right?
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: They see the coffee shop, they see the drinks, they see the customers, uh, they see the social media now more with uh being partnered with the community segment here, but they don't necessarily see all the work that goes on behind the scenes to make a business operate.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:32SPEAKER_04: Because you guys, it's not just once the doors close, you don't think about it ever again until you open the doors in the morning, right?
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's constant.
- 6:38SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, 24-7.
- 6:40SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, this morning we were talking about something, and then yet last night we were talking about things, and it's just it's a consistent and constant, you know, conversation around getting better, serving the community.
- 6:51SPEAKER_05: You know, they just had a fundraiser over the weekend, which I'm pretty sure we're gonna talk about today.
- 6:54SPEAKER_05: Yes, you know, and that's something that we talked about.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: Like, what how was the best way to take this from an idea ultimately to executing this into a real life thing, and then the impact on the back end to hopefully inspire others to do great things as well.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: And that's awesome.
- 7:08SPEAKER_04: And so you also, you kind of mentioned it, you also own your own business.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: You are a state farm urgent insurance agent.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:14SPEAKER_04: So you've spent a lot of time dealing with people, managing relationships, absolutely, understanding risk and running the business.
- 7:19SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: So, how does that experience help you with guiding Lindy in SIPS?
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: So ultimately it's gonna start, you know, all the way back to high school through the CEO program.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: Correct.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: You know, that that was that's a huge program.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: Creating entrepreneurial opportunities.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 7:34SPEAKER_05: Shout and shout out to everybody that's involved with that program.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, they normally ask me once, once or twice a year to come talk to the group, which I love doing that, love helping the kids as much as I can because it's something that 10 years ago, actually this year, yeah, you know, I was in.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: It's crazy, 10 years ago, right?
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: And that that program was ultimately, I'd say, the spark and the start of wanting to open an open and operate a business, you know, and then now, right, through the past 10 years of owning different businesses and things like that, to where now owning a state farm agency in Lichfield, which is still the local area, correct, right?
- 8:03SPEAKER_05: That that all has culminated into all these business lessons and ideas.
- 8:07SPEAKER_05: You know, on top of not just our local area, right?
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: I always say I was born in the right time, not the wrong time.
- 8:13SPEAKER_05: Because, and the reason what I mean by that is we our access to information is more than it's ever been.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Oh my gosh, yes.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: You know, I know 10x like Grant Cardone, Gary Rainer Chuck, Dom Ikovone.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: There's there's countless people that I watch and I learned that are smarter than than me and you probably put together, Chris.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: I agree.
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm not the smartest one in the room.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then we're trying to bring those lessons, of course, to our local market and local area, and then educate and hopefully help others to do great things too.
- 8:39SPEAKER_04: And that's right.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: And I think it's an important lesson for everyone to who's listening, who's thinking about starting a business too, right?
- 8:45SPEAKER_04: You don't necessarily have to know everything.
- 8:47SPEAKER_04: No, you have to know what you're good at, surround yourself with the right people and be willing to learn the things you don't know.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 8:54SPEAKER_04: And find a mentor or model yourself after someone that you like they've got it going on.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: Let's figure out what they're doing and make that happen, right?
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 9:02SPEAKER_04: So shifting that gear from business and getting that going and helping helping Lindy make the decisions or put the information in front of her to let her help make the decisions on those things for sips.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: So now one of the things that really stands out to me about you and Lindy is your philosophy about business.
- 9:19SPEAKER_04: You guys talk a little talk about people over profit.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 9:22SPEAKER_04: And I love that because at the end of the day, businesses are built by people, right?
- 9:26SPEAKER_04: If you don't have people to come in and buy your services or products, you don't have a business, right?
- 9:31SPEAKER_04: Where did that philosophy come from for you?
- 9:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: So ultimately, I I don't know, it's it's kind of been ingrained in me.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: Even my dad, you know, he hauls I had somebody come in my office yesterday at the at the state farm office, and he was talking about how he's rode with my dad, you know, because they deliver food for the food pantry.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: Farm for the food pantry.
- 9:48SPEAKER_05: You know, bring it here, put it out, depending on where it's going, all kinds of different things.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: And he just does that for free.
- 9:53SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: You know, and and he's the type of guy to where he's by he's behind the scenes.
- 9:57SPEAKER_05: He doesn't want anybody to know he even does it.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: Hey, right.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: Shouting him out right now.
- 10:01SPEAKER_05: You know, and it and I I will just say that Lindy has held three different fundraisers like she held this past weekend.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: And those numbers are not public, but I'm telling you, the impact is is is enormous on these some of these families.
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: And, you know, anytime somebody comes to me and just wants me to sponsor a sports game, like sure, right?
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: And that that's obviously smaller, but it all those small acts add up to big results, right?
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: And the key here, I don't know, it's it's just been ingrained in me since it since a very young age.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: It's just why do I want to give back?
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: It's just who I am.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: It's her nature.
- 10:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's just part of it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: Did you so 10 years ago when you were a senior in high school and you and well, actually 11 years ago, you applied for the CEO program, right?
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: Because you're in the first class.
- 10:41SPEAKER_05: Yes, first class.
- 10:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, McCuba County.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: Macuba County first class of CEO, correct.
- 10:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 10:46SPEAKER_04: Did your dad have his own business at that time too?
- 10:48SPEAKER_05: No, he actually did.
- 10:49SPEAKER_05: Well, he did and he didn't.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: He was thinking about it, and I would say that I was part of that, you know, journey and decision as well.
- 10:55SPEAKER_04: Because he started about it that's what I was trying to see is where that spark kind of started or where it came from.
- 11:01SPEAKER_04: So it's almost like your dad had that earning or that yearning, that burning desire, and and you're like, oh, I see my dad doing it.
- 11:07SPEAKER_04: I I look up to my dad, I'm sure.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: And like, let's make it happen.
- 11:11SPEAKER_05: And I'll share this with you, Chris, and I'm sure you've known this as well.
- 11:14SPEAKER_05: I am proud to say that I've probably influenced dozens of people to want to start their own businesses and helped people.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: And um, and my what the business I'm in now, right?
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: Insurance and financial services, that industry, I have people reaching out to me all of the time asking me for advice, and I don't charge anything for that because I want to help them.
- 11:32SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm a big fan of we need to build the city up, not burn the city down and try to be the last man standing.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: We all need to come up together, even though you know it's a joke to where in the industry I'm in, to where because it we we're all competing against each other, correct?
- 11:46SPEAKER_05: But you know, we're all helping each other out, is I guess what I'm trying to say.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: No, and that's true, and it's so powerful what you're saying, you know, because there's there's a difference between having customers, having relationships, not being that last man down, or or burning the city down and being the last man standing.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: It is about collaboration.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, right, cooperation is what we call it.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: Coopetition.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:08SPEAKER_04: I I I am so I'm a Stephen Covey fan.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Uh Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, the win-win scenario.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:15SPEAKER_04: I'm so into that that everyone can walk into a situation and everyone should be able to walk away feeling good about the results of that conversation, transaction, or whatever.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: Even if it's a hey, thanks for my coffee, hey, thanks for the money, appreciate it.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: Win-win.
- 12:28SPEAKER_04: I'm happy with what I got.
- 12:29SPEAKER_04: You're happy with the money you got, it's a win-win, right?
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: And businesses coming together too, or supporting that entrepreneurial spark in someone as well.
- 12:39SPEAKER_04: You know, that's that's that's definitely something that we need to stick with.
- 12:43SPEAKER_04: And I'm glad that you're doing what you're doing in that realm.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, your local community is only going to be as strong as your local businesses, too.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: Without going too far off the rails here into like the tax.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: We get off the rails all the time here.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: So like Caitlin's not here, we'll keep it on track a little bit better.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: So I mean sales tax, property taxes, right?
- 13:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 13:01SPEAKER_05: The the money that's being paid to these employees that they go and spend back in these communities, it's very important.
- 13:06SPEAKER_04: And that's that's great.
- 13:07SPEAKER_04: And eventually those businesses become part of that fabric of the community that you're talking about.
- 13:12SPEAKER_04: And you talked about before about how giving back to the community creates a return, not necessarily an immediate financial return, but a return in relationships, trust, loyalty, and community.
- 13:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:22SPEAKER_04: Talk to us about what that looks like for you guys as a couple.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: So the principle that I've always told Lindy is for every dollar that you give, you get a multiple of return.
- 13:31SPEAKER_05: For the sake of conversation, I would say for every dollar you give, you get two back.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: Reput your sow, right?
- 13:36SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: Tenfold return, the Bible says.
- 13:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:39SPEAKER_05: And that is a biblical principle.
- 13:41SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 13:42SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, you know, and and I think it's very important to, it's not important to give just to get back, because it's important to give with expecting nothing in return.
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 13:51SPEAKER_05: But, you know, I'm part of a multi-hundred billion dollar corporation, and I was in a business seminar actually, and what they were talking about was the most important thing to a local business is your community involvement.
- 14:04SPEAKER_05: And that stuck with me, and I learned that about two years ago because they there's a huge screen, huge presentation, and they they broke it down into three things.
- 14:11SPEAKER_05: We just want to focus on the first one for the sake of time, but they said the most important thing that a local business can be doing is sponsoring the local sports teams.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Yes, it's getting out in the community, it's helping out at the local church if that if you're into that, right?
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: It's just about getting involved wherever and however you possibly can.
- 14:29SPEAKER_05: And what that's gonna do in turn is not just help your business, it's gonna help the people.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: And that's where the people over profits comes in, right?
- 14:36SPEAKER_05: Because sure we all have to make money, we all have to provide for employees, we all have to do these things.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: But at the end of the day, if we don't have a community left because we've sucked it all dry, what do we have left?
- 14:46SPEAKER_05: We have nothing, and then everybody loses.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: Exactly.
- 14:48SPEAKER_04: And that's something I think a lot of business owners need to hear is that community isn't something you market to, it's something you participate in.
- 14:56SPEAKER_04: Love, I love that and you just don't put a logo on a sponsorship banner and and call it a community involvement.
- 15:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you actually show up, you get involved, you help people, and over time people remember that.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Grant Cardone has the thirty 13 rules success.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Number 11 on that is prosperity attitude.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_04: So when you were talking about the cooperation, yeah, you know, uh, I talk about collaboration.
- 15:18SPEAKER_04: That prosperity attitude is there's enough business out there, there's enough people out there, there's enough money out there.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: Yep, it's everywhere.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: You just gotta go know who has it and how to get it.
- 15:28SPEAKER_05: Well, something you shared with me one time, Chris, is the you know, the ocean.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: You're looking at the ocean and then the buckets go into the water, and you know, you could take as many buckets as you want out of that.
- 15:37SPEAKER_05: And I would add into that, Chris, to where, you know, I'm not a philanthropist because I'm pretty for to pretty sure to be a philanthropist, you have to be like Rockefeller or Carnegie, but on a very small version, right?
- 15:48SPEAKER_05: Philanthropy is just the act of doing good and and leaving the world a better place than the way that you found it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: And I would say that that's something that I do live by to where it's important to make this world a better place, right?
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: Through community actions, through giving back, through just helping people in general.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: The knowledge, right?
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: Humanity is a culmination of knowledge and sharing that with other people of what you know it I think is very important.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Ryan, you are a wealth of information and you're great to talk with.
