- 1:20Speaker 2: by saying, Nikki and I are teammates. Yes, at Georgia Tech.
- 1:24Speaker 2: So we met each other. How long it's been?
- 1:27Speaker 1: What?
- 1:27Speaker 2: How many years has we played? Almost what?
- 1:30Speaker 3: Now?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Don't tell on yourselves now it's almost fifteen fifty Yeah, yeah,
- 1:37Speaker 1: it's been told.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I don't even know how old are you. I don't know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: thirty four?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Like you graduated a year ago and it's been a decade.
- 1:47Speaker 2: So yeah, Nicky and I played volleyball together at Georgia Tech.
- 1:49Speaker 2: We we'll talk about that.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Yes, we'll get into that. So firstly, howse Hou's Las Vegas? Yeah?
- 1:54Speaker 1: How's it going? How are you feeling today?
- 1:58Speaker 3: I love Las Vegas. My soul is home, Like I
- 2:01Speaker 3: feel like I've been meant to live here my whole life.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I love it here. We we just moved here. I
- 2:06Speaker 3: think it's been over a month now and everyone is thriving.
- 2:10Speaker 3: We are so happy. We love it.
- 2:12Speaker 2: You moved there from Tulsa, right, Oklahoma, because Corey got
- 2:17Speaker 2: a coaching job with U N l V. So we'll
- 2:20Speaker 2: get into now. You're you are a coach's wife, following
- 2:24Speaker 2: the footsteps of Miss Mama Shelley. We're gonna get into
- 2:28Speaker 2: into that later, but we wanted to start off by
- 2:31Speaker 2: asking you if you could describe being born to the
- 2:35Speaker 2: game in three words? What would those three words be?
- 2:44Speaker 1: This episode?
- 2:46Speaker 3: I feel like Mom and Dad raised me better than this.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Buts are what the? What the?
- 2:58Speaker 1: Okay? So why?
- 3:00Speaker 3: I mean, it's just that every scenario in this business,
- 3:05Speaker 3: there's so many twists and turns, highs, lows.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, so what the We're gonna bleep it out,
- 3:14Speaker 2: don't worry. Yes, there's so many highs and lows. So
- 3:18Speaker 2: walk us through your dad and his coaching journey. Did
- 3:22Speaker 2: you guys move together? How was that experience?
- 3:26Speaker 1: Like moving?
- 3:27Speaker 2: How many cities did.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You move to? Like, kind of walk us through your upbringing,
- 3:30Speaker 1: walk us through the why why? Yeah?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Why?
- 3:33Speaker 1: Why? Why?
- 3:34Speaker 3: I guess yes. So I was born in Colorado, and
- 3:40Speaker 3: earlier in his career we were in like five year stretches.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So five years in Colorado, five years at Notre Dame
- 3:47Speaker 3: he was an assistant and assistant, and then he got
- 3:49Speaker 3: his first head coaching job, and we were little like
- 3:53Speaker 3: back in those days. I don't even think my brother
- 3:55Speaker 3: was born yet. He was born in Indiana actually, so
- 3:58Speaker 3: we all just moved as a fan. Little kids, it's easy,
- 4:01Speaker 3: puck them up. Move. He got his first head coaching
- 4:05Speaker 3: job at Bowling Green. I was ten years old. Still
- 4:09Speaker 3: like was okay with moving, was fine. We all went together.
- 4:13Speaker 3: And then it got a little more complicated when he
- 4:16Speaker 3: took the job at Utah two short years later. My
- 4:21Speaker 3: parents Actually I threw a little bit of a fit
- 4:24Speaker 3: for that one. For the first time, really was stubborn
- 4:27Speaker 3: about the move. My parents let me stay in Bowling Green,
- 4:31Speaker 3: Ohio for like six more weeks or something to finish
- 4:34Speaker 3: out school. I stayed with my best friend and her family,
- 4:39Speaker 3: and then I moved to Utah when school was over.
- 4:41Speaker 3: So that was the first time we were not all together. Okay,
- 4:47Speaker 3: we were at Utah for two years, and then he
- 4:49Speaker 3: took the Florida job, and I think we moved pretty
- 4:54Speaker 3: quickly then two But the mean, you know, it's never immediate.
- 4:57Speaker 3: There are always like a few weeks maybe a mon
- 5:00Speaker 3: where you know, he would go on without us. Okay,
- 5:03Speaker 3: but my parents were so good when they when we
- 5:05Speaker 3: were moving, like they didn't give a ton of air,
- 5:08Speaker 3: a ton of space for it to be this huge
- 5:11Speaker 3: like thing. Like they they were like, you know what,
- 5:14Speaker 3: We're gonna go see different parts of the country. You
- 5:15Speaker 3: guys are awesome kids. You're gonna make new friends. You're
- 5:18Speaker 3: gonna have friends all over when this is all said
- 5:20Speaker 3: and done, and and so there just wasn't like a
- 5:23Speaker 3: ton of space for us to complain or have anxiety
- 5:26Speaker 3: about it. It was just the way it was life
- 5:28Speaker 3: as we do.
- 5:28Speaker 2: They hyped it up to be this like exciting journey
- 5:33Speaker 2: that you guys were almost preparing them probably for what
- 5:35Speaker 2: they knew was to come.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, Yeah it was great. I enjoyed
- 5:41Speaker 3: it as a kid, and I think it built just
- 5:44Speaker 3: a lot of you know, good characteristics. And me and
- 5:46Speaker 3: my siblings, like, we're pretty adaptable, We're pretty comfortable with
- 5:50Speaker 3: people we don't know. I think that just helped grow
- 5:55Speaker 3: us and who we are today.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Yeah. So when was the last time that you moved?
- 5:59Speaker 2: How was it when you were leaving friends? Do you
- 6:01Speaker 2: feel like it made you come closer together as a
- 6:05Speaker 2: family unit each time you moved. How was that experience?
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it definitely did. My siblings to this day are
- 6:13Speaker 3: my best friends. We talk almost every day. Our family
- 6:17Speaker 3: unit is extremely tight knit, and I think moving had
- 6:21Speaker 3: a lot to do with that. You're thrown to a
- 6:23Speaker 3: new atmosphere, you don't know anybody but each other, and
- 6:25Speaker 3: like just navigating that together really bonded us. We built
- 6:30Speaker 3: a lot of trust with each other. We've been through
- 6:32Speaker 3: a lot together. I think coaching is such an extreme
- 6:36Speaker 3: way of life, it is so I think that in
- 6:40Speaker 3: itself just really has bonded our family for sure.
- 6:43Speaker 1: So your dad has coached five different teams, four college
- 6:47Speaker 1: teams and one NFL teams. So every time you moved
- 6:51Speaker 1: together and it was a new adventure, what were some
- 6:58Speaker 1: of the challenges, Like, yes, you had to move, but
- 7:01Speaker 1: what are some things in the dynamic from the family
- 7:03Speaker 1: that that caused challenges from all the moving and the separation.
- 7:09Speaker 3: His career path was very interesting. I think it's it's
- 7:13Speaker 3: probably pretty unique in the sense like it was pretty
- 7:16Speaker 3: it was a it was a pretty steady climb uphill.
- 7:18Speaker 3: There wasn't a lot of this during that initial climb,
- 7:23Speaker 3: and so I think what was interesting about that is
- 7:26Speaker 3: we started just you know, as an assistants family, which
- 7:30Speaker 3: is great. Like that you don't have the full spotlight
- 7:32Speaker 3: on you, and so coming into the spotlight it was gradual,
- 7:36Speaker 3: I would say, because we started at Bowling Green, which
- 7:40Speaker 3: is an amazing place. We loved living there. But then
- 7:42Speaker 3: it's obviously not the same stage as like Florida. Its yeah,
- 7:49Speaker 3: we moved. That spotlight just got really, really, really big,
- 7:53Speaker 3: and I think adjusting to that was probably I remember
- 7:58Speaker 3: seeing him on commercials on drinking like orange juice, promoting
- 8:01Speaker 3: orange juice, So why would they have you no offense
- 8:05Speaker 3: orange juice? Wow?
- 8:06Speaker 2: So well, you do you think in that moment you realized, oh, wow,
- 8:09Speaker 2: dad is a big deal.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I remember being at a press conference. I can't remember
- 8:14Speaker 3: if it was Utah or Florida, but I just remember
- 8:18Speaker 3: people like catering to my mom, like just surrounding her,
- 8:22Speaker 3: being like what do you need? What do you need?
- 8:23Speaker 3: Like can I do anything? Can I take your coat?
- 8:25Speaker 1: And I just was like, that's weird.
- 8:26Speaker 3: I just thought that was very extreme.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, that was.
- 8:29Speaker 3: My first taste of that. And then seeing my dad
- 8:32Speaker 3: on TV and like watching people interact with him, like yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 3: that started to change. And so and I was probably
- 8:39Speaker 3: fifteen fourteen, like so I was, I was young, and
- 8:42Speaker 3: so that was just all very weird.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, your dad is gaining fame. Did that change your
- 8:50Speaker 2: relationship with him? How was he as a father during
- 8:54Speaker 2: this process? And as he's getting more and more famous
- 8:57Speaker 2: and everyone's catering to him, Like, how was that dyna
- 9:00Speaker 2: between you guys?
- 9:02Speaker 3: I feel that I was my parents like intended for this.
- 9:07Speaker 3: But I became more and more aware each time we
- 9:09Speaker 3: were about to move. I was overhearing certain conversations and
- 9:13Speaker 3: I started to understand what his dream was to go
- 9:18Speaker 3: win a national championship, which to me was so big
- 9:22Speaker 3: that was such a big dream. I think he knew
- 9:25Speaker 3: in his heart his whole life that he could do that.
- 9:27Speaker 3: I think like he wanted that, but I never even
- 9:29Speaker 3: thought of that, And so I became just his biggest
- 9:33Speaker 3: cheerleader along the way, like realizing like when you look
- 9:36Speaker 3: at your parent and you're like, I want them to
- 9:39Speaker 3: go achieve their dreams. Like that's just such a unique
- 9:41Speaker 3: dynamic as a kid because usually that's them, you know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: But when you when you think that about your parents,
- 9:46Speaker 3: I just I just we all just kind of rallied
- 9:49Speaker 3: behind him. I think that was really what changed the most.
- 9:54Speaker 3: But my parents, again, like their style is I don't know,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I'm not like promoting this necessarily because it worked very well.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Don't give a bunch of space for negativity. So of course,
- 10:08Speaker 3: like with fame comes a lot of challenges. There comes,
- 10:12Speaker 3: you know, the spotlight's bigger, and like the criticism is louder.
- 10:15Speaker 3: And my parents just said, like, hey, your dad is
- 10:19Speaker 3: he's got a really good opportunity in front of him.
- 10:23Speaker 3: We're gonna win some games, we're gonna be able to
- 10:25Speaker 3: do some really fun things. But people might be mean
- 10:27Speaker 3: to you after we lose, or people you know, might
- 10:29Speaker 3: fay some things about your dad that aren't true, and
- 10:31Speaker 3: that's just that's just part of it. And that was it.
- 10:34Speaker 3: That was like the only conversation we had about it.
- 10:36Speaker 2: So when she said that, and it came right because
- 10:40Speaker 2: the negativity does come, was that something that was easy
- 10:42Speaker 2: for you to just like maneuver and you just were
- 10:46Speaker 2: able to like use those words and go with it.
- 10:50Speaker 2: You didn't allow any of the negativity to bother you,
- 10:52Speaker 2: or did it bother you at some point?
- 10:55Speaker 3: It so bothered me, okay, for in the early stages,
- 10:59Speaker 3: I know, and so many people have asked me this
- 11:01Speaker 3: over the years. I think with each trial or with
- 11:06Speaker 3: each thing that we went through, and they kind of
- 11:08Speaker 3: come in waves, like you kind of like go and
- 11:10Speaker 3: just ride a wave with everybody else, but then he
- 11:12Speaker 3: ends up in the spotlight. Yeah, and it just gets
- 11:15Speaker 3: piled on. I think every time that happened, I built
- 11:19Speaker 3: just another layer of skin, and so I have like
- 11:22Speaker 3: a hundred layers again by now to where I could
- 11:25Speaker 3: read anything and I don't care. I don't care. But
- 11:30Speaker 3: that came with just a lot of refuge.
- 11:32Speaker 2: A lot of experience. Look, Nikki, you could have rubbed
- 11:35Speaker 2: off on me the last couple of years I was
- 11:37Speaker 2: dealing with the Indiana fan base because you know, you know,
- 11:42Speaker 2: I yeah, I could.
- 11:44Speaker 1: So we're gonna get into that because I mean you could.
- 11:46Speaker 1: You could write a book, to be honest, just on
- 11:49Speaker 1: how because I would imagine that you use the skill
- 11:51Speaker 1: that they're teaching you, this thick skin that they're they're
- 11:55Speaker 1: they're allowing you to grow into that you use it
- 11:58Speaker 1: in life as as a woman, as a mother, as
- 12:01Speaker 1: a wife. Now, so talk about that. How has being
- 12:05Speaker 1: brought up in this nucleus, in this ecosystem of fame
- 12:10Speaker 1: and sports and you know, fans and just craziness. How
- 12:14Speaker 1: does that help in your everyday life as a person
- 12:18Speaker 1: that you're not your dad, you are a totally different person.
- 12:21Speaker 1: How does that impact you? And how does it help you?
- 12:25Speaker 3: I think it just gives me a lot of perspective.
- 12:28Speaker 3: I think perspective is something that like I have a
- 12:31Speaker 3: lot of Like I fall short in like a million ways,
- 12:34Speaker 3: like so many ways, but one thing that I think I.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Have a lot.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I just have a lot of perspective. And it allows
- 12:39Speaker 3: me to just take a step back, like consider the source,
- 12:43Speaker 3: Like who you're saying it, why, Like what does it mean,
- 12:47Speaker 3: in this little exercise that I used to do is
- 12:50Speaker 3: I was building my armor of my thick skin. I
- 12:53Speaker 3: would look at the person's profile and if you just
- 12:56Speaker 3: scroll through, all I do is tough to people all
- 13:00Speaker 3: the time. It's just like when they troll it.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And most of the time it's fake accounts.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It's and honestly, they really just want you to respond.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So Nikki, tell us how the Urban Meyer is as
- 13:15Speaker 1: a dad? I know this is he's your best friend,
- 13:18Speaker 1: So just tell the audience just how he is just
- 13:21Speaker 1: as a fond You know, he's a great coach, so
- 13:24Speaker 1: that's been proven, So how is he as a dad?
- 13:26Speaker 3: He I seriously, it's funny because I've been I've had
- 13:30Speaker 3: a lot of really young coaches lately that are starting
- 13:33Speaker 3: families and growing up in this industry. I feel again
- 13:37Speaker 3: perspective I am lucky to have because people worry as parents,
- 13:43Speaker 3: They're like, is this okay for our kids? Like we've
- 13:46Speaker 3: moved twice and in two years, and like you know,
- 13:50Speaker 3: their dad's always busy. And I just feel so moved
- 13:53Speaker 3: to tell people like you can be such great parents
- 13:57Speaker 3: and be great in this industry. And my was just
- 14:01Speaker 3: he should write a parenting book. I swear as the
- 14:04Speaker 3: coach because he's he was the best like he I
- 14:09Speaker 3: that man. I am loyal person ever to him. He
- 14:12Speaker 3: was such a ke. He is such a good father. He
- 14:15Speaker 3: and the way he did it. His time was so minimal,
- 14:18Speaker 3: but he was so overly intentional with every minute that
- 14:22Speaker 3: he had with us. He still is and I just
- 14:25Speaker 3: think it was so not about quantity, but like the
- 14:28Speaker 3: quality was unmatched. Our time with him was so good
- 14:32Speaker 3: as kids, and he put a lot of work into that.
- 14:36Speaker 3: And we would have like mailboxes or I specifically, I
- 14:39Speaker 3: think I was the only one old enough to like
- 14:40Speaker 3: read at that point. I would have like a little
- 14:42Speaker 3: mailbox outside of my door, and he would write me
- 14:45Speaker 3: letters every night because I was usually asleep when he
- 14:48Speaker 3: got home. Or I would write one back about like
- 14:50Speaker 3: what I was, how I was doing. I still have them.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I have them like stored away. He was so intentional,
- 14:57Speaker 3: he was excellent. He was so good.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Wow, now that you are in the same industry your
- 15:04Speaker 2: husband's coaching, I know that's something that Corey, I'm sure
- 15:07Speaker 2: you've told your husband about and some of those traditions
- 15:11Speaker 2: he may even want to pass along to y'all's children.
- 15:14Speaker 2: That's awesome. What life lessons has your dad taught you?
- 15:19Speaker 2: You also played sports. What's the best advice your dad
- 15:22Speaker 2: gave you?
- 15:23Speaker 3: Just he his whole message test was if you work
- 15:26Speaker 3: as hard as you can, everything else is fine, Like,
- 15:29Speaker 3: no matter what happens, as long as you were working
- 15:31Speaker 3: as hard as you could, there's nothing that you could
- 15:33Speaker 3: have done wrong. So if you play, if you're off, like,
- 15:37Speaker 3: as long as your effort was good, like, then you
- 15:39Speaker 3: can go to bed at night feeling like you did
- 15:40Speaker 3: all you could. And I feel like that can translate
- 15:43Speaker 3: into life too. And that was it. He was all
- 15:46Speaker 3: about effort and just work ethic and I think that
- 15:51Speaker 3: that was just something I'm really glad that he instilled
- 15:53Speaker 3: in all of us young and we weren't allowed to
- 15:56Speaker 3: do anything like as kids. He was like, you can't
- 15:59Speaker 3: do anything until you're great at one thing. He's like,
- 16:03Speaker 3: I don't care if you're great at working, you know,
- 16:06Speaker 3: going to work, but like you're not just gonna sit home.
- 16:08Speaker 3: You're there, gonna be great at a sport, You're gonna
- 16:10Speaker 3: be great at a job. You're gonna go do something
- 16:12Speaker 3: right now. And they were and you know, as parents.
- 16:16Speaker 3: It's so hard to just reinforce rules all the time
- 16:19Speaker 3: because it just takes a lot of time, and like
- 16:22Speaker 3: sometimes it's just easier to be like I forget that
- 16:24Speaker 3: I even said that because it's just taking too long,
- 16:26Speaker 3: Like my parents kept their foot down. Wow, And as
- 16:32Speaker 3: a parent, I'm like, wow, that was a lot of effort.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, so you you brought it up, so I'm
- 16:37Speaker 1: gonna ask I got two words for you.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Shelly Meyer go.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Icon. She she's maybe tougher than my dad. And they
- 16:51Speaker 3: are just such a like they're such they were the
- 16:54Speaker 3: perfect force for that industry. She was the perfect level
- 16:58Speaker 3: of toughness for us, training us to be tough and
- 17:02Speaker 3: like learn how to just deal with the criticism. But
- 17:04Speaker 3: she was also like such a nurturing like just breathing
- 17:08Speaker 3: in like just calmness to him and to us as well.
- 17:14Speaker 3: He I like will never forget, like even until he
- 17:18Speaker 3: was I don't know out Ohio state. For sure, I
- 17:22Speaker 3: saw it with my own eyes. She would walk him
- 17:24Speaker 3: to the car every single morning with a bagel like
- 17:27Speaker 3: wrapped up in foil so it would still be warm
- 17:30Speaker 3: when he got to work. Social coffee Like she just
- 17:33Speaker 3: would walk him out there every day to the car,
- 17:35Speaker 3: see him off, and then just deal with the home front.
- 17:38Speaker 3: So he didn't even have to think about it. Like
- 17:40Speaker 3: she I fall short every day because I'm like, how
- 17:44Speaker 3: I can never live up to that? Like, but if
- 17:46Speaker 3: I'm like fifty percent, then I'm doing really good.
- 17:49Speaker 2: So when we spoke to you the other day, you
- 17:52Speaker 2: referred to Michelle as the silent assassin.
- 17:55Speaker 1: M hm, yes, why is she the sis that?
- 18:00Speaker 2: Why why did she choose those words from Michelley?
- 18:04Speaker 3: I feel that like my dad would he would say
- 18:08Speaker 3: this too, like he just couldn't have done it without her,
- 18:10Speaker 3: Like she was just she was the one like in
- 18:13Speaker 3: the background dealing with all everything that comes with this,
- 18:17Speaker 3: all the stress, all the drama, and she just is
- 18:22Speaker 3: a rock. Like she was such a rock when we
- 18:24Speaker 3: were growing up, and but she was is she like
- 18:28Speaker 3: pushed him and like he was always the one like
- 18:30Speaker 3: in the light, like you know, getting all the credit
- 18:32Speaker 3: for how great, But like she just was in the back,
- 18:34Speaker 3: like handling her business, ready to protect, ready to defend,
- 18:39Speaker 3: and ready to nurture, and she she just somehow handled
- 18:42Speaker 3: it like such a beast every day.
- 18:44Speaker 2: So now that you are a coach's wife. What's one
- 18:47Speaker 2: thing that you've seen her do that you're currently doing
- 18:51Speaker 2: as a wife in this industry.
- 18:55Speaker 3: I think she embraced the industry for what it is.
- 18:58Speaker 3: I think there's so many wives like myself in particular,
- 19:01Speaker 3: like just try to fight it sometimes, like you put
- 19:04Speaker 3: up resistance when your husband's like, all right, I have
- 19:07Speaker 3: to go on the road for four weeks recruiting, and
- 19:10Speaker 3: it's all like you're on your own and sometimes you're moved.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I'm in Las Vegas and I don't have a village here,
- 19:16Speaker 3: like so I'm like, who is you to help me?
- 19:18Speaker 3: Like I will fight and I'll resist the industry. I
- 19:21Speaker 3: never saw her do that. She just was like, no,
- 19:23Speaker 3: it is what it is, and your dad's gonna be
- 19:25Speaker 3: gone for six weeks and it's just that, so what
- 19:26Speaker 3: do you guys do you guys want breakfast for dinner?
- 19:28Speaker 1: Like it was just like.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Like you never really saw her stressing about anything.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Wow, No, even when things were bad, she was like,
- 19:36Speaker 3: you just have it great all the time, Like, of
- 19:38Speaker 3: course we're gonna do this is lose. Of course people
- 19:40Speaker 3: are gonna say mean things like it's not fair unless
- 19:42Speaker 3: you deal with this part too.
- 19:43Speaker 1: It sounds like she has a really she had an
- 19:45Speaker 1: understanding of the weight of the assignment. And even though
- 19:50Speaker 1: it looks like a job, but it's really a purpose
- 19:53Speaker 1: thing because now you know, she has raised these children
- 19:58Speaker 1: in this crazy life with all this extra stuff that
- 20:02Speaker 1: the everyday person doesn't even begin to understand. And now
- 20:06Speaker 1: she has kids who know how to navigate life. I mean,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and I think that's just the biggest thing, because so
- 20:13Speaker 1: many people they don't have those skills, they don't have
- 20:16Speaker 1: coping skills, they don't know how when change happens, they
- 20:18Speaker 1: don't know how to how to maneuver. So I think
- 20:21Speaker 1: what she was doing was just was just raising up
- 20:25Speaker 1: a whole nother generation of people.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Strong foundation that you now use for your church.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Yeah, because you talked about because your children have moved
- 20:37Speaker 2: quite a few times already in a few years, and
- 20:41Speaker 2: you say that your children are also very resilient, they
- 20:44Speaker 2: adapt well. So you know, Michelle, she laid out the
- 20:50Speaker 2: foundation for you and now you just are able to
- 20:52Speaker 2: grow off of that. And so that's she's she is iconic,
- 20:55Speaker 2: she's a silent assassin, she's the real MVP and all
- 20:58Speaker 2: of this, and that's what a lot of people and
- 21:00Speaker 2: understand it really is it's the wives that are holding
- 21:03Speaker 2: it down at home so that our dads can have
- 21:08Speaker 2: the careers that they've had for as long.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Yeah, they need to write a playbook. She needs to
- 21:13Speaker 1: write a playbook. Herd A bunch of these other wives
- 21:16Speaker 1: yell you, she needs to write a playbook.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I wish she would. Yeah, yeah, I mean she really.
- 21:23Speaker 3: I really think the one thing that I took from
- 21:25Speaker 3: my parents is to not give too much space for
- 21:30Speaker 3: just then.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I want my.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Kids to feel hurt. I want them to feel their
- 21:34Speaker 3: feelings are valid, like of course, but also like okay,
- 21:37Speaker 3: like get it out there, but what are we gonna do?
- 21:39Speaker 1: Like how are we going to do?
- 21:41Speaker 3: Kid it and like make this good and embrace what
- 21:44Speaker 3: it is and like grow from it. She just we
- 21:46Speaker 3: didn't like sit around and let a bunch of it.
- 21:48Speaker 3: DI weren't allowed to do that, and so I just
- 21:51Speaker 3: have tried to carry that too. I think it's helped,
- 21:55Speaker 3: definitely helped.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Now that I think back, I don't think I've ever
- 21:58Speaker 2: really seen you upset Nikki ever, so like so hearing
- 22:02Speaker 2: this it makes sense because we played together for what
- 22:05Speaker 2: three years two three years at Georgia Tech. You've always
- 22:09Speaker 2: been extremely positive and extremely nurturing. So your husband's coaching
- 22:13Speaker 2: young players, how have you been able to, I guess,
- 22:18Speaker 2: pour back into some of your husband's players the same
- 22:20Speaker 2: way that you've seen your mom do it with you
- 22:23Speaker 2: guys and hurt your dad's players.
- 22:27Speaker 3: Yeah. I think sports has changed so much so fast.
- 22:31Speaker 3: There's so much money and there's so much weight, and
- 22:34Speaker 3: there's social media and it's just getting so big that
- 22:40Speaker 3: now more than ever, I just, first of all, I
- 22:43Speaker 3: want their moms, our players' moms to know me and
- 22:46Speaker 3: to know that, like they can call me at any
- 22:49Speaker 3: hour and ask me to put together an Easter basket
- 22:53Speaker 3: for their little stuff like that. Like I just be
- 22:57Speaker 3: like a small version of like them that's close to
- 23:01Speaker 3: their sons while they're away from home. And I just
- 23:04Speaker 3: feel I feel like kids are there are so much
- 23:07Speaker 3: weight on their shoulders, and I just I just feel
- 23:13Speaker 3: moved to just help. Like look what people have said
- 23:16Speaker 3: about my dad, Like look what people have said about
- 23:18Speaker 3: my family, and like it doesn't matter. I feel like
- 23:21Speaker 3: I can relate to them, drawing up Christ to them,
- 23:26Speaker 3: but also just being and they're around men all the time,
- 23:29Speaker 3: they're around their teammates and they're around our husbands and
- 23:32Speaker 3: the other coaches. I'm like, it just feels good to
- 23:34Speaker 3: have a female walk in the room, you know and
- 23:36Speaker 3: tell me like if my husband being mean to you,
- 23:38Speaker 3: can vidce like whatever. And so I just want them
- 23:42Speaker 3: to trust me, and I want the moms to trust
- 23:45Speaker 3: me utilize me. And that's just like that's what I
- 23:49Speaker 3: feel like I try to do.
- 23:50Speaker 1: And I can tell you're so passionate about it. It's
- 23:52Speaker 1: so beautiful to see your passion behind people's kids, because
- 23:55Speaker 1: I think people don't look at these athletes as kids.
- 23:58Speaker 1: There are no people look at them as like, you know, adults,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and it's like, I mean, they are adults, but they're
- 24:03Speaker 1: young adults and they're in school like they're there to
- 24:06Speaker 1: learn and to play and to and to you know,
- 24:09Speaker 1: learn and to grow to be young men, to be
- 24:13Speaker 1: men out here, and so they I don't think they
- 24:15Speaker 1: think about that. They don't.
- 24:17Speaker 3: The players were so blessed too, because they are so
- 24:20Speaker 3: good to my kids, Like it's like the very least
- 24:22Speaker 3: I could do is to be there for them in
- 24:25Speaker 3: any way. But the way they treat our kids, like
- 24:28Speaker 3: those dynamics are so special like it just it just
- 24:33Speaker 3: like it's the gift that like we all give each other.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I think like it's just like a family unit that
- 24:37Speaker 3: just somehow like tries to be there for everybody and
- 24:40Speaker 3: and it's just special. Like I it's funny, like a
- 24:46Speaker 3: tough rap. I don't want to say bad rap, but
- 24:47Speaker 3: it's tough. But I'm married into this industry like knowing
- 24:51Speaker 3: full well like what comes with it, and I just
- 24:55Speaker 3: think it's so great. I think it's so great as
- 24:57Speaker 3: a family. I think it's great for kids. The players
- 25:00Speaker 3: really do make it like such a good experience. We've
- 25:03Speaker 3: got like every NFL jersey now that they all play
- 25:07Speaker 3: for and wear them and root for them. It's just
- 25:10Speaker 3: and you watch them go through their own turns too,
- 25:13Speaker 3: like if you're not in a storm like someone you
- 25:15Speaker 3: know is, And I just.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Would you say that your passion in life right now
- 25:22Speaker 2: is to pour back into the game the way that
- 25:25Speaker 2: it's poured into you.
- 25:28Speaker 3: If I could like get organized, like I so like
- 25:32Speaker 3: would I just am like I'm just all over the place,
- 25:35Speaker 3: but like yes, and I try and like small ways
- 25:39Speaker 3: to like show up and like be there and do
- 25:40Speaker 3: the things that make a little difference. But this industry
- 25:45Speaker 3: is like it's like the deep blue speed. There's like
- 25:47Speaker 3: nothing I don't think, like formally in place that's there
- 25:52Speaker 3: to you know, support. I think people try to do
- 25:54Speaker 3: their best, but it's like a wild West too, Like
- 25:56Speaker 3: thinks are changing so fast and I think they're so new.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But yeah, if I could ever like get my life
- 26:02Speaker 3: organized in a sense that I could do something like,
- 26:05Speaker 3: there's just such a space for it.
- 26:06Speaker 1: There's such a need. Yeah, you need to do a
- 26:09Speaker 1: Ted look Ted talk talk.
- 26:11Speaker 2: You really need to do.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Because you because your story again, because you talk about
- 26:19Speaker 1: you want the moms and the players to trust you.
- 26:22Speaker 1: There's no better person to to talk to these guys
- 26:26Speaker 1: and to share their testimony than you and your family
- 26:30Speaker 1: and how you guys have always rows above anything that
- 26:33Speaker 1: came to destroy you and you and you carry yourself
- 26:37Speaker 1: with such grace and dignity and you've always been like that.
- 26:41Speaker 2: I think a Ted talk would be a Ted talk.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I think what's interesting too, is like my my perspective again,
- 26:49Speaker 3: perspective is like the word of the day. I feel like,
- 26:52Speaker 3: wouldn't be fair for me to sit here and be like, oh,
- 26:55Speaker 3: coaching is so great, if like all that ever happened
- 26:58Speaker 3: to us was like national championships and like winning. It's
- 27:02Speaker 3: fair because the things that like our family has had
- 27:06Speaker 3: to go through has been like probably some of the
- 27:09Speaker 3: it's been like bad, like relative to like other coaches,
- 27:12Speaker 3: like I would rank us like up there in the
- 27:14Speaker 3: drama column. And so I feel like we've seen both sides.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Gives it like a just a very fair evaluation of
- 27:23Speaker 3: like the full picture really and being in our own storm.
- 27:28Speaker 3: So when people reach out, it was like such like
- 27:32Speaker 3: the timing wasn't on accident. Like I truly believe that
- 27:35Speaker 3: people are prompted to like check in on someone, or
- 27:38Speaker 3: they're prompted to say something or just to be like, hey,
- 27:40Speaker 3: I'm I'm praying for you, I'm thinking of you, and
- 27:43Speaker 3: and there are so many times in my life that
- 27:44Speaker 3: I've been prompted or I felt that I need to
- 27:47Speaker 3: reach out and I just don't because you're like, oh,
- 27:49Speaker 3: I don't want to, Like I just don't want to,
- 27:51Speaker 3: you know. But what I've learned is every single time
- 27:56Speaker 3: someone has sent me something, it has mattered, and it
- 28:00Speaker 3: has been sometimes like a really critical moment where it
- 28:03Speaker 3: was just what I needed to hear and whether I
- 28:05Speaker 3: respond or not, like it might have been the difference
- 28:10Speaker 3: for its strength, like another day to like get through
- 28:13Speaker 3: whatever it was that we were going through.
- 28:15Speaker 1: So didn't you guys use to call each other tits?
- 28:17Speaker 1: And I'm sorry, this is because I want to get
- 28:20Speaker 1: to this to Georgia Tech a little bit, we did.
- 28:23Speaker 2: We called each other tis.
- 28:24Speaker 1: But why why?
- 28:26Speaker 3: I don't know, Corey, I was like, I don't remember.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I think it's because we used to like chest bump
- 28:33Speaker 2: each other, maybe like before practice and games and like,
- 28:36Speaker 2: you know, the chest tits used to you know, okay,
- 28:40Speaker 2: and then just has it just to be like, oh
- 28:43Speaker 2: hey tits, smack the booty and keep going. Very natural.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I mean, the guys do it. They slap each other's
- 28:50Speaker 1: It's a very very.
- 28:52Speaker 2: Natural thing for us to do. So let's talk about
- 28:57Speaker 2: what you're doing now, Like Nikki Meyer, Dennis, what are
- 29:01Speaker 2: you doing now with your life?
- 29:05Speaker 3: Well, I feel like now I'm like managing logistics of
- 29:11Speaker 3: moving three times in like a year. I'm like utility
- 29:15Speaker 3: companies all over the country. I have accounts and I'm
- 29:17Speaker 3: probably still paying for all of them. I don't know,
- 29:20Speaker 3: but no, I think raising my three amazing kids. Troy's
- 29:25Speaker 3: eight Gray is six, Sad is three, savannahs sad and
- 29:32Speaker 3: so that's obviously my priority. And then I've worked. I've
- 29:37Speaker 3: been with the company for eleven years or like family
- 29:40Speaker 3: to me. It's based out of Columbus, Ohio, So I'm working.
- 29:44Speaker 3: They were gracious enough to let me keep working, even
- 29:47Speaker 3: remotely with all the moves. But yeah, I feel we
- 29:51Speaker 3: stay busy. We've got sports all over the base and
- 29:54Speaker 3: Corey's that we're trying to support Corey. And yeah, so
- 29:57Speaker 3: it's just constant, go go.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Go busy.
- 30:01Speaker 2: She does it all. You work in corporate, you're a mom,
- 30:03Speaker 2: you're a wife, you travel all the time, you and
- 30:07Speaker 2: you still do it with such grace and you can
- 30:11Speaker 2: we can all learn.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Some budding public speaker. I'm saying it. I'm calling it today.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I don't know. Can you drink champagne?
- 30:20Speaker 1: You can? You can, but you can if you put
- 30:23Speaker 1: it in a water bottle. You know what I mean.
- 30:24Speaker 1: That doesn't that's not You can put whatever you.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Wanted that a liquor company sponsor you boom.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Then it has to be out there.
- 30:32Speaker 2: It has to be out there. Get a wine company
- 30:34Speaker 2: to sponsor, which I'm sure plenty would so.
- 30:37Speaker 1: We want to play some games. Let's before we let
- 30:39Speaker 1: her go.
- 30:39Speaker 2: I feel like we've we've covered it. You know, we
- 30:42Speaker 2: wanted to move through this quickly. Well, I guess, Nikki,
- 30:45Speaker 2: Like what are your eyes set on in the future,
- 30:48Speaker 2: Like where is it staying in Vegas? And you know
- 30:52Speaker 2: Corey can stay at UNLV for the rest of y'all's days,
- 30:56Speaker 2: Like where do you see yourself?
- 31:00Speaker 3: God is so mysterious, like the most mysterious ever, and
- 31:04Speaker 3: like that has been I've always, by the way, like
- 31:08Speaker 3: believed there's a plan, Like I've always believed that my
- 31:10Speaker 3: whole life. I was raised to believe that. I've never
- 31:14Speaker 3: experienced it, I don't think until this last year and
- 31:18Speaker 3: a half. And so like what I hope what my
- 31:22Speaker 3: eyes are set on is just the scenario where our
- 31:25Speaker 3: family is thriving, Like where we're happy, where we're around
- 31:28Speaker 3: good people, where Corey is in a position that he's
- 31:33Speaker 3: valued and that he's happy, that he loves his players
- 31:36Speaker 3: and his staff, Like I don't even care other than that,
- 31:39Speaker 3: Like there's no place, there's no person like and I
- 31:43Speaker 3: will just let God take that and like do his thing,
- 31:46Speaker 3: because he did that here we prayed for gosh, like
- 31:51Speaker 3: a year where like we just want to end up
- 31:52Speaker 3: in the place. And I was thinking, like in my mind,
- 31:55Speaker 3: like I had places. I'm like, well, this would be great,
- 31:57Speaker 3: or this scenario would be great. All of a sudden,
- 31:59Speaker 3: you and I'll be popped up. And we looked at
- 32:02Speaker 3: each other and we were like, that's it. And if
- 32:05Speaker 3: you gave me a patent paper and said write it out,
- 32:08Speaker 3: where do you want to be twenty twenty five, I
- 32:10Speaker 3: wouldn't have come up with it this good of a plan.
- 32:13Speaker 3: Like it's just love. I'm my hands are up and
- 32:17Speaker 3: I am just trusting that like wherever we are be
- 32:21Speaker 3: are going to be or just fitted to that it's
- 32:24Speaker 3: on purpose. So that's that's kind of where my mind
- 32:29Speaker 3: is at.
- 32:29Speaker 2: And as long as you're with your family, yeah, I
- 32:32Speaker 2: guess nothing else really matters. Like your family's healthy, you're happy,
- 32:36Speaker 2: you're thriving, you guys are together. Family. I know family
- 32:40Speaker 2: means a lot to you. So I know, just have
- 32:42Speaker 2: your family together. At the end of the day, you
- 32:45Speaker 2: can make home anywhere. And that's one thing you do
- 32:48Speaker 2: learn being born into this industry is that home isn't
- 32:52Speaker 2: necessarily a place. It's the people it's your family, it's
- 32:57Speaker 2: the memories that you make together. It's not necessarily a
- 33:01Speaker 2: specific location, because even for myself, what's home for me?
- 33:04Speaker 2: Like I've bounced around as well. I went from Houston, Atlanta,
- 33:07Speaker 2: New York, LA. I'm in New Orleans now, So it
- 33:10Speaker 2: really is about my family being together no matter where
- 33:14Speaker 2: we are. So I love that you set that.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Cause I would imagine creating family that's not family, that's
- 33:19Speaker 1: not blood family, but created those families as you every
- 33:23Speaker 1: every location, You're at.
- 33:25Speaker 3: Such a good point too, Like you meet people along
- 33:28Speaker 3: the way, and Mariah, like I remember meeting you in
- 33:31Speaker 3: college and like, without knowing anything about you, I knew
- 33:33Speaker 3: like we were going to understand each other more than
- 33:35Speaker 3: like most people. You find good people in this industry,
- 33:38Speaker 3: and it's rare that you stick together. Like people just
- 33:42Speaker 3: end up on their own path. Yeah, but you just
- 33:44Speaker 3: you always root for them, like you like you just
- 33:46Speaker 3: always you remember them, you pray them, you root for them,
- 33:50Speaker 3: you want the best for them, You stay in touch.
- 33:53Speaker 3: It's just special in that way, you know, and the
- 33:56Speaker 3: bond is real and distance is real. But I just
- 34:00Speaker 3: really cherish the relationships that we've been able to make
- 34:03Speaker 3: in this industry for sure.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Well, Nikki, we are going to transition into some games
- 34:08Speaker 2: because we know we don't have a lot more time
- 34:10Speaker 2: with you. Yeah, you play start bench cut before, right?
- 34:19Speaker 2: Or no?
- 34:20Speaker 1: What is it? Okay?
- 34:21Speaker 2: So it's called start bench cut. So I'm gonna give
- 34:24Speaker 2: you three different scenarios and then you tell me which
- 34:27Speaker 2: you can start, which one, which one do you want
- 34:30Speaker 2: to bench, and which one you want to what.
- 34:31Speaker 1: About to spend?
- 34:33Speaker 2: No, let's just start, okay, Okay, all right? So seeing
- 34:37Speaker 2: Zach star.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Like start like like like start like in a game,
- 34:41Speaker 1: a starter player like.
- 34:42Speaker 2: A start You're gonna start it in a game. You're
- 34:45Speaker 2: gonna either bench it or you're gonna completely.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Cut it, get cut from the team.
- 34:49Speaker 2: You're gonna be cut from the team. So you're I'm
- 34:54Speaker 2: gonna give you three different scenarios. Seeing Zach Bryant in
- 34:58Speaker 2: Vegas at a show, Okay, that's one scenario. You're gonna
- 35:03Speaker 2: be eating sushi in Japan that's another scenario, or skiing
- 35:10Speaker 2: in Europe. So which one are you gonna start?
- 35:14Speaker 1: Which one you get in? Which one.
- 35:19Speaker 3: I'll bench Zach in Vegas? I'll bench it. I would
- 35:23Speaker 3: love it. But those other I'm like a huge bucket.
- 35:27Speaker 3: I'm like not a super like star person, like I
- 35:31Speaker 3: like love people and like I'm very starstruck all the time.
- 35:36Speaker 3: The experiences like I just those are gonna take the
- 35:39Speaker 3: cake every time. So like I'm gonna start, I'm gonna
- 35:43Speaker 3: ski in Europe. I'm like going a ski vibe. I
- 35:45Speaker 3: just did two ski trips like the bench Zach, and
- 35:49Speaker 3: then what was.
- 35:51Speaker 1: The other one?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Sushi in Japan?
- 35:55Speaker 3: Oh no, I'm cutting, Zach, Okay, cut, that's.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:03Speaker 1: So so who are you starting now? You're still starting skiing?
- 36:08Speaker 3: Okay, I'm gonna start seeing. I'm gonna bench Tokyo because
- 36:11Speaker 3: I'm gonna I'm gonna get there, Okay.
- 36:13Speaker 1: And then.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Sorry, sorry zak Zach, if you're listening, we still love you,
- 36:18Speaker 2: but sorry, I do love you, yes, love you? Sorry? Okay,
- 36:24Speaker 2: do we have any how much time do we have left?
- 36:26Speaker 1: Five minutes?
- 36:27Speaker 2: Five minutes? So let's you know what, let's talk about.
- 36:31Speaker 2: Let's listen to our outro. Out Okay, let's stare for
- 36:33Speaker 2: some time to the outro. That's so your dad, the
- 36:36Speaker 2: urban Meyer has left his mark in his industry football,
- 36:41Speaker 2: How will you legendize your world? And I think because
- 36:43Speaker 2: we didn't we didn't get to talk about it early.
- 36:45Speaker 2: But talk about if this is part of your answer,
- 36:49Speaker 2: even the journals that you gave your players and the
- 36:54Speaker 2: Bible versus, because I just think like you, the way
- 36:58Speaker 2: that you pour into people, at least to me, and
- 37:02Speaker 2: I'm like answering the question for you. That's part of
- 37:05Speaker 2: how I see you legend legendizing the world.
- 37:08Speaker 3: I think, gosh, yeah, that is such a It's like
- 37:14Speaker 3: a family tradition. First, my dad always gave each of
- 37:17Speaker 3: us a journal. I mean, I like, literally have it
- 37:19Speaker 3: right here, like I have. I don't even know. I
- 37:22Speaker 3: probably like twenty of these I totally filled out. But
- 37:26Speaker 3: Corey and I got some for we get some for
- 37:29Speaker 3: our players, and we put we put in a Bible verse.
- 37:35Speaker 3: Usually it's like Joshua one nine or like something like that,
- 37:38Speaker 3: just like the strong, courageous, brave like those ones. And
- 37:41Speaker 3: then we also put in the quote man in the arena.
- 37:47Speaker 3: I actually think I might have it right here. I
- 37:50Speaker 3: actually have a big screamed picture of it. Yeah, I'll
- 37:55Speaker 3: send it to you. Yeah, but it says I'll read
- 37:59Speaker 3: just a couple of lines that are my favorite. It's
- 38:01Speaker 3: not the critic who counts, not the man who points
- 38:03Speaker 3: out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer
- 38:07Speaker 3: of deeds could have done them better. Let's see, I'm
- 38:13Speaker 3: trying to There's one line in here that's just like
- 38:15Speaker 3: so good.
- 38:17Speaker 1: I love that you could read it if you want.
- 38:23Speaker 3: He who at work, he fails at least fails while
- 38:27Speaker 3: daring greatly. That's so good, like because I feel like
- 38:32Speaker 3: people who are the loudest, like they've never attempted, never,
- 38:36Speaker 3: they've never put in work their life into anything, so
- 38:40Speaker 3: they just don't just like I do. Whereas like these
- 38:43Speaker 3: people like they're whether coaches or players, they put in
- 38:46Speaker 3: their entire lives into something and then they fail. Anyway,
- 38:49Speaker 3: sometimes that's the hard part address but at least they tried.
- 38:52Speaker 3: But yeah, that the man in the arena, a Bible
- 38:55Speaker 3: verse in journals are like like something that we just
- 39:00Speaker 3: really try to do. Especially quarterbacks are such a small group,
- 39:02Speaker 3: like you can do like so many things with them
- 39:04Speaker 3: because you don't have like twenty But yeah, that is
- 39:08Speaker 3: that's something that I will try to make a tradition
- 39:10Speaker 3: every single year.
- 39:12Speaker 2: I love that, And honestly, I'm going to take that
- 39:14Speaker 2: quote and put it in my notes as well, because
- 39:17Speaker 2: again that's something that I know personally I need it
- 39:21Speaker 2: to hear, even on my own journey. So I love that.
- 39:25Speaker 3: It's just such a mic drop. It's just like it
- 39:28Speaker 3: just ends like whatever. It like, Okay, come at me.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I fail, It's fine, but at least I'm out here
- 39:32Speaker 3: doing something. It's just it's just like conversation is just over.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Definitely no.
- 39:38Speaker 2: But that's that's literally it, Like, I mean, that's.
- 39:41Speaker 1: Something that's it.
- 39:42Speaker 2: Yeah, like you know, yeah, your words can't affect me.
- 39:46Speaker 1: And so that's that's for you. I mean I started,
- 39:48Speaker 1: really and I mean there you might get negative, negative comments,
- 39:53Speaker 1: but at least you're doing it. At least you're starting.
- 39:55Speaker 1: This is episode two and this is how thatitude is
- 40:00Speaker 1: what we need to do moving forward forward. So I
- 40:03Speaker 1: think you just ended our episode beautifully, which drop drop moments.
