Latest / Walk the Pod: 10 minute walking / S65E1 Introducing ‘Confidence’
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello and welcome to Walk the Pod, your daily walking
- 0:14Speaker 1: show where I take my podcast for a walk because
- 0:17Speaker 1: I don't have a dog. You're very welcome along. This
- 0:20Speaker 1: is the beginning of a brand new series, Series 65,
- 0:22Speaker 1: in which we're going to be discussing our new theme
- 0:26Speaker 1: of confidence. My name is Rachel Wheelie. A human in
- 0:31Speaker 1: the world just trying to figure out how to be.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Walking in South Kensington in London. Very busy lunchtime. Tools
- 0:44Speaker 1: going off in a nearby building site. People walking around.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And I'm excited to kick off a new series with
- 0:55Speaker 1: this first episode. I'm excited to tell you where we've
- 0:57Speaker 1: got to with our various walking stories. side quests. And
- 1:03Speaker 1: I'm excited to see how you are because it's been
- 1:06Speaker 1: too long. Welcome to Walk the Pod. Walking along in
- 1:19Speaker 1: South Kensington, I'm excited to start thinking about confidence. It's
- 1:27Speaker 1: given me a lot of ideas since we decided on
- 1:31Speaker 1: our topic. I have been writing in a notebook, keeping
- 1:37Speaker 1: track of lots of ideas about confidence and I've got
- 1:42Speaker 1: a few prompt starter questions for you rather than dive
- 1:47Speaker 1: into anything that could be called content straight away but
- 1:50Speaker 1: more like let's think about some questions and then I'd
- 1:54Speaker 1: love to hear from you to find out what confidence
- 1:58Speaker 1: means to you because of course there are Eleventy million
- 2:02Speaker 1: ways we could start thinking about this new theme. So,
- 2:06Speaker 1: in no particular order, here are some thoughts. Is confidence
- 2:13Speaker 1: something which is a general feeling we have, or does
- 2:18Speaker 1: it vary wildly depending on which area of our life
- 2:24Speaker 1: we are reflecting on? Is it possible that some of
- 2:30Speaker 1: our confidence is misplaced? A feeling that we can do
- 2:35Speaker 1: things simply because we don't know enough about what it
- 2:39Speaker 1: would take to be able to do them well? Is
- 2:44Speaker 1: confidence something that grows with experience? Or is it transferable?
- 2:51Speaker 1: So can I bring confidence to one field of thought
- 2:55Speaker 1: because I've developed it in another? Those are a few
- 3:00Speaker 1: starter questions for you. And you may have your own
- 3:03Speaker 1: entirely different ways of coming at this new theme. So
- 3:07Speaker 1: the way I'd like to invite you to contribute is
- 3:11Speaker 1: to go to walkthepod.com on the internet. Most people are
- 3:16Speaker 1: on the internet these days. And I would argue if
- 3:18Speaker 1: you're listening to a podcast, you're on the internet enough
- 3:22Speaker 1: to be able to do this. But I appreciate that
- 3:25Speaker 1: not everybody wants to engage with yet another internet thing.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I can't think of another way of directing you to this, though, really.
- 3:33Speaker 1: So this is the best I've come up with so far.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Go to walkthepod.com and click the link that says send
- 3:40Speaker 1: a voice note to Walk the Pod. That will take
- 3:43Speaker 1: you to an application called Speakpipe. And you'll be able
- 3:48Speaker 1: to click a microphone button and record 90 seconds of
- 3:52Speaker 1: your beautiful voice or less on the subject of confidence
- 3:57Speaker 1: and send it directly to me. And that is quite
- 4:01Speaker 1: a nice system because I can record a voice note
- 4:03Speaker 1: back straight away to you to say thank you. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: I can download your beautiful voice and I can put
- 4:09Speaker 1: it in the very next show. What I've discovered in
- 4:12Speaker 1: the last few months is that you can now voice
- 4:14Speaker 1: note directly through Instagram. So if you're following at walkthepod
- 4:20Speaker 1: on Instagram, you can send me a voice note that way.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And if you know me personally and have my number,
- 4:27Speaker 1: you can voice note me through WhatsApp. So there are
- 4:31Speaker 1: lots of different ways to do this. I will put
- 4:37Speaker 1: some of the voice notes into the show. I love
- 4:40Speaker 1: that I can ask for voice notes on a Monday
- 4:42Speaker 1: and put the first ones into the show on Tuesday.
- 4:46Speaker 1: So I'm keen to try to do that. But there's
- 4:51Speaker 1: time to get your voice notes in before the end
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the series because we will be recording every working
- 4:57Speaker 1: day for 10 days. And we'll cover as much as
- 5:01Speaker 1: we can on confidence. And as usual, I will also
- 5:07Speaker 1: be paying attention to what's directly in front of me
- 5:12Speaker 1: as I complete my lunch. What can I see directly
- 5:19Speaker 1: in front of me? Well, there's a police van going past,
- 5:27Speaker 1: which you might be able to hear them. and Imperial
- 5:31Speaker 1: shuttle bus going around the corner and lots of e-bikes
- 5:37Speaker 1: and people holding coffee cups and various cars and motorbikes
- 5:45Speaker 1: and push bikes and a decent quantity of flags because
- 5:52Speaker 1: we are in South Kensington where there are many embassies
- 5:58Speaker 1: I don't know why I started that word with the
- 6:00Speaker 1: letter A. Ambassies, embassies. And there's a number nine bus
- 6:06Speaker 1: going past as well. Now, what you might be keeping
- 6:09Speaker 1: an eye out for as you pay attention to what's
- 6:11Speaker 1: directly in front of you is one of our walking games.
- 6:17Speaker 1: We've got a few going on at the moment. First
- 6:20Speaker 1: of all, we've got our colour quest game. And the
- 6:24Speaker 1: colour quest game goes like this. Every week... I invite
- 6:28Speaker 1: you to send photographs in via this board, which is
- 6:32Speaker 1: a little community message board for Walk the Pod, our
- 6:35Speaker 1: little corner of the internet, for a particular colour. And
- 6:40Speaker 1: we've just started our Orange Week. So you can send
- 6:45Speaker 1: me photographs of something orange if you want to. You
- 6:49Speaker 1: can find all the links for that at walkthepod.com as well,
- 6:54Speaker 1: as the link for the voice notes. So there's colour quest.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Anything that you see on your walk that is orange
- 7:02Speaker 1: can be photographed. I would like to ask though that
- 7:05Speaker 1: you please send me photographs from your walk. If you're
- 7:08Speaker 1: inside and you see something orange, well that's not helping
- 7:11Speaker 1: you to walk. So the whole point is to give
- 7:14Speaker 1: you another reason to step out of the door. So
- 7:17Speaker 1: please send me something from your walk that is orange.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I am reasonably open to shades of orange. that may
- 7:25Speaker 1: be slightly more yellow or slightly more red. So don't
- 7:27Speaker 1: be too careful about what you photograph. If it's broadly orange,
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's acceptable. Separately, we are playing Shape Quest. We're looking
- 7:38Speaker 1: for hearts in the environment. Again, you must be on
- 7:40Speaker 1: a walk to take a photo. That's the only rule.
- 7:42Speaker 1: I don't make the rules. And thirdly, we are playing
- 7:46Speaker 1: Number Quest. And we now have numbers all the way
- 7:49Speaker 1: up to 12. So if you want to keep an
- 7:51Speaker 1: eye out for 13s, and you don't feel too superstitious
- 7:55Speaker 1: about photographing the number 13 in the environment as you're
- 7:59Speaker 1: on a walk, please send that in to the Discord
- 8:01Speaker 1: as well. And with that, you have so many reasons
- 8:04Speaker 1: to go for a walk today. I don't know how
- 8:07Speaker 1: you're still inside. What are you doing standing in your kitchen?
- 8:11Speaker 1: Come on, put that cup of tea down, lace up
- 8:14Speaker 1: your trainers, and go for a walk. Because, yes, it's
- 8:17Speaker 1: cold and it is in the UK right now. But actually...
- 8:21Speaker 1: You'd be amazed if you walk outside to find that
- 8:23Speaker 1: actually it's a bit sunnier than you thought it was.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And I've been impressed since I started recording the podcast
- 8:32Speaker 1: nearly six years ago now at how infrequently I'm caught
- 8:36Speaker 1: in rain or snow or high wind or any other negative,
- 8:42Speaker 1: difficult to walk in weathers. So I can encourage you
- 8:49Speaker 1: to step outside. And you might find it sunnier than
- 8:52Speaker 1: you thought it would be more often than you might
- 8:55Speaker 1: think it would be. Just walking past the big A0
- 9:02Speaker 1: signpost for Kensington Gardens with a beautiful map on it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: I'm being shocked past by runners every couple of seconds
- 9:14Speaker 1: at the moment. It's a very popular route for running here.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Which brings me on to a thing that I was
- 9:21Speaker 1: considering earlier today, which is that I work with a
- 9:24Speaker 1: lot of people from New Zealand and Australia, and they
- 9:28Speaker 1: talk about hiking. And I was thinking, you know, hiking
- 9:31Speaker 1: kind of indicates a lot of walking, a lot of effort,
- 9:37Speaker 1: and does sound a bit more strenuous than walking. I
- 9:39Speaker 1: don't know how you feel about that. I wouldn't say
- 9:41Speaker 1: that I go on lunchtime hikes. I would say I
- 9:45Speaker 1: go on lunchtime walks. But they're not quite the same.
- 9:48Speaker 1: You know, there's a hike, which is I've decided an
- 9:50Speaker 1: eight mile route and I'm setting off on it now.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And then there's, I'm walking the same route every day
- 9:57Speaker 1: in order to pay attention to how the seasons change.
- 10:00Speaker 1: a bit more carefully than I can in my rather
- 10:04Speaker 1: homogenized office where every day feels like the same. Do
- 10:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean? It can be very, it
- 10:11Speaker 1: can be very clinical in an office and it can
- 10:13Speaker 1: be very homogenous in terms of what season it is.
- 10:17Speaker 1: That's why I love celebrating the the sabbats, the wheel
- 10:21Speaker 1: of the year, the seasonal changes, the weather, and just
- 10:27Speaker 1: generally reconnecting with nature as much as I can in
- 10:30Speaker 1: order to bring a little bit of variety to the day.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Thank you for walking with me, dear friends. I feel
- 10:39Speaker 1: like there's more to say, and I could go on,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but one of the rules is that I'm only allowed
- 10:43Speaker 1: to record for 10 minutes. So sometimes it's 11, 12
- 10:47Speaker 1: or 17 minutes, but it's supposed to be 10. So
- 10:51Speaker 1: I have to draw this episode to a close now.
- 10:55Speaker 1: But we'll be recording episode two tomorrow. Can't wait to
- 10:58Speaker 1: do that. And very much encourage you to leave a
- 11:02Speaker 1: voice note for me. And if you're walking and you
- 11:07Speaker 1: want to record a walking report to provide evidence of
- 11:10Speaker 1: your walk or just to make contact or just to
- 11:14Speaker 1: meet a new community of walkers all over the world,
- 11:17Speaker 1: you can send me a walking report via voice note
- 11:20Speaker 1: as well. And in this way, you surround yourself with
- 11:25Speaker 1: people for whom walking is a daily habit. You make
- 11:29Speaker 1: it more normal for yourself. You make it easier to do.
- 11:32Speaker 1: And whilst it's difficult to step out of the front door,
- 11:36Speaker 1: especially when you're dealing with chronic pain or respiratory problems
- 11:40Speaker 1: like I do, We can help each other by playing
- 11:46Speaker 1: games together, paying attention to what's directly in front of
- 11:49Speaker 1: us and thinking about a theme and giving ourselves an
- 11:52Speaker 1: opportunity just to think about something different for a few
- 11:55Speaker 1: minutes a day. I'm absolutely delighted to be back walking
- 11:59Speaker 1: with you, opening this series and starting to think about confidence.
- 12:06Speaker 1: And I look forward to bringing you episode two tomorrow.
