Transcript
- 0:00Chapter 34 from the book of Jeremiah as we start again, we
- 0:06remember that all scripture is God breathed and is useful for
- 0:10teaching, rebuking, correcting and training and righteousness
- 0:14so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
- 0:17good work. That's found in Second Timothy
- 0:20chapter 3 verse 16. And also the other reason why we
- 0:25read is because as Romans said, as Paul said in the book of
- 0:30Romans chapter 10 verse 17. Consequently faith comes from
- 0:35hearing the message and the message is heard through the
- 0:39word about Christ. So let's get started.
- 0:42Dear God, please let the Holy Spirit give us wisdom and
- 0:45insight as we read through this chapter.
- 0:48We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So this was a warning to
- 0:53Zedekiah. He was the king at the time.
- 0:56So chapter 34, while Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,
- 1:01and all his army and all the Kingdom and peoples and the
- 1:03empire he ruled were fighting against Jerusalem and all its
- 1:07surrounding towns, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord.
- 1:13This is what the Lord, the God of Israel says.
- 1:15Go to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, this is what the
- 1:20Lord says. I'm about to give the city into
- 1:23the hands of the king of Babylon, and he will burn it
- 1:27down. You will not escape from his
- 1:31grasp, but surely be captured and given into his hands.
- 1:37You will see the king of Babylon with your own eyes, and he will
- 1:42speak with you face to face, and you will go to Babylon.
- 1:47Yet hear the Lord's promise to you.
- 1:50Zedekiah, king of Judah, this is what the Lord says concerning
- 1:55you. You will not die by the sword.
- 2:00You will die peacefully. So this is really interesting
- 2:05because first of all, God is sovereign over all of this.
- 2:09He's allowing this to happen because of Israel's sins.
- 2:13In the prior chapters, he kept saying, you know, if you don't
- 2:16repent, if you don't change your ways, this is going to come upon
- 2:19you. And then he told the people
- 2:21through Jeremiah, he said, go peacefully with Babylon and you
- 2:26will live and you will have children and, and work hard
- 2:29there and make it prosperous like that's what God said to do
- 2:34if you want to keep your life. But if you stay in Jerusalem,
- 2:39then you are going to die either by sword famine.
- 2:43I think it might be our wild beast.
- 2:44I can't remember our plague, Noah's plague.
- 2:47So there were three different things that would come upon
- 2:49people who stayed, who remained in Jerusalem, which is pretty
- 2:54much the opposite of what God used to do all the time.
- 2:57When God was with Israel, He would defeat all their enemies.
- 3:02But here God is telling Jeremiah this in advance.
- 3:06He's not. It's not an after the fact
- 3:09discussion with Jeremiah like This is why it happened.
- 3:12He's warning him in advance and he did this for years.
- 3:16I think it said something about Jeremiah did either 23 years or
- 3:2113 years, something like that, where he was warning people, but
- 3:24the people wouldn't listen. And then what God said was
- 3:29coming about. And here the king of Zedekiah,
- 3:32he wasn't a good king and he it actually imprisoned Jeremiah and
- 3:37had him locked up because Jeremiah kept preaching this
- 3:41doom and gloom and nobody wanted to hear it.
- 3:44So they, they, because it was against the city of Jerusalem
- 3:48and there was, they were just not turned to the Lord.
- 3:51Their eyes were not opened. They or their eyes were opened,
- 3:55but they didn't want to listen to him.
- 3:57And so they just wanted good news and they were ignoring
- 4:00anything that was negative. And, and that's something that
- 4:04we probably need to pay attention to is, you know, if,
- 4:08if someone is saying repent, that's pretty much what almost
- 4:13all the prophets said. And even if you look at or read
- 4:18the parable of the vineyards and the servants or the workers in
- 4:24the vineyard, it, it really does kind of suggest that like God
- 4:30sends people over and over to talk about repentance and people
- 4:35don't want to hear it. People are comfortable in their
- 4:38sins. They like doing what they want
- 4:40to do. We are born naturally with an
- 4:43inclination towards sin. So it it involves change, it
- 4:48involves a change in our mind to be willing to live according to
- 4:54the way that God says we should live.
- 4:57And a lot of people resist that and they don't want to hear it.
- 4:59They want to remain living the way that they live, the way they
- 5:04think is best, but not necessarily the way God thinks
- 5:08is best. And they'll give all these
- 5:09reasons and why what God says is not good.
- 5:13But we have to remember who the boss is, who our Creator is, who
- 5:18made all the laws, who created the earth.
- 5:20And what he says is, is truth. Doesn't matter if we like it or
- 5:25not. It's what the truth is.
- 5:27So are we willing to live according to the truth,
- 5:31according to what God has commanded?
- 5:34There are consequences when we choose to be rebellious against
- 5:38God. We can.
- 5:40We can do whatever we want. God doesn't force us.
- 5:43He lets us make this decision and ironically, this chapter
- 5:48talks about slavery and just a few podcasts ago I talked about
- 5:53slavery and it happened just because it came up in a Bible
- 5:56study. And now this is coming up again.
- 6:00And to keep in mind that what I, I don't know what I've come, the
- 6:05conclusion that I've come to is that I will first of all, I
- 6:09prefer to say that we are servants.
- 6:13That would, that would be a better word.
- 6:14And I truly think that I'm a little bit concerned about Bible
- 6:18translations because the more recent translations,
- 6:25translations use the word slave way more than the word servant.
- 6:33But if you go back to the oldest translations, they sparingly use
- 6:40the word slave. And so I just, you know, I think
- 6:45that also like matches up culturally with the world.
- 6:49And I think we really need to be careful about that because go
- 6:53back to the the podcast about slavery because our mindset in
- 7:01America and what we know of slavery is different than what
- 7:06is in the Bible. But ultimately, in a spiritual
- 7:12sense, we are slaves. We are either slaves to sin or
- 7:17slaves to God. Or if you want to say we're a
- 7:20servant of sin or we're a servant of God.
- 7:23And that's really what it is. It's either we're in rebellion
- 7:26to God and, you know, sinful, or we are submitted to God and have
- 7:34him as Lord over our life, as the boss over our life.
- 7:39What he says goes. So that's a choice that we all
- 7:42get to make. Going back to scripture as
- 7:46people made a a funeral fire in honor of your predecessors, the
- 7:52kings who ruled before you so that so they will make a fire in
- 8:01in your honor and lament. So God is foretelling.
- 8:06How would you like that Zedekiah that you're going to die
- 8:09peacefully, but they're going to have a funeral fire and you're
- 8:11you know, just like your your predecessors.
- 8:15That would not be of such a welcoming thing.
- 8:18At last, master, I myself make this promise, declares the Lord.
- 8:24Then Jeremiah the prophet told all this to Zedekiah, king of
- 8:28Judah in Jerusalem, while the army of the king of Babylon was
- 8:33fighting against Jerusalem and other cities of Judah that were
- 8:36still holding out Lakish and Asakai.
- 8:41These were the only fortified cities left in Judah.
- 8:45So everything was getting demolished.
- 8:46They're seeing the enemy approaching Zedekiah seeing this
- 8:50and he didn't want to believe it.
- 8:51When Jeremiah was prophesying, this was speaking, this is the
- 8:55word of the Lord, this is what's going to happen.
- 8:57And he didn't want anything to do with it.
- 8:58But now he's seeing it with his own eyes.
- 9:00And then God's saying, you're actually going to see the king
- 9:03of Babylon, you specifically, and you're going to be taken and
- 9:07you're, but you're going to die peacefully.
- 9:09So here, that's one word like that's, I guess a little bit of
- 9:13God's mercy and compassion for him.
- 9:17So here's where it gets into about the slaves.
- 9:19The word came to Jeremiah from the Lord after King Zedekiah had
- 9:24made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem to proclaim
- 9:28freedom for the slaves. Now, the slaves were essentially
- 9:33indentured servants going back to scripture.
- 9:37Everyone was to free their Hebrew slaves, both male and
- 9:42female. No one was to hold a fellow
- 9:46Hebrew in bondage. So what how the slavery came
- 9:51about. God did allow this.
- 9:53He allowed this for poor people, for people who didn't have the
- 9:58means for the basic necessities like food and shelter when they
- 10:03had nothing else they could offer.
- 10:05They could offer themselves as labor.
- 10:08And basically they were brought into another person's home and
- 10:13they didn't have, or if they didn't have money to pay the
- 10:16debt, instead, they could work for the person.
- 10:19And that's what this quote slavery was.
- 10:22So is it better to call them a servant or, you know, they are,
- 10:26they're they're being taken care of through this, through this
- 10:31process. And it's a willful decision for
- 10:34a Hebrew to become a slave. And it's an A result out of
- 10:38hardship. So it's very unlike what America
- 10:41saw where there were people that were kidnapped and brought into
- 10:46slavery. The the Bible very clearly says
- 10:50that if you kidnap somebody like that, you, you are to be put to
- 10:56death. So the Bible does not condone
- 10:59slavery in the way that we know it happened here in America.
- 11:04So it's not condoning slavery. But at the same time, God did
- 11:09allow people to essentially sell themselves to do work for debt
- 11:15that they couldn't pay off. But he also said don't get into
- 11:18debt like that. So anyway, it was a means of
- 11:22survival. So, so all going back to
- 11:25Scripture. So all the officials and people
- 11:28who entered into this covenant agreed that they would free
- 11:33their male and female slaves and no longer hold them in bondage.
- 11:38They agreed and set them free. But afterward they changed their
- 11:43minds and took back the slaves they had freed and it's and
- 11:48enslaved them again. Then the word of the Lord came
- 11:51to Jeremiah. This is what the Lord the God of
- 11:55Israel says. I made a covenant with your
- 11:59ancestors when I brought them out of Egypt, out of the land of
- 12:03slavery. I said every 7th year, each of
- 12:09you must, must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves
- 12:16to you. So here you can see this is a
- 12:18willful act on the Hebrews part. They, they sold themselves to
- 12:23someone and the 7th year, this is a a there is, you know, not,
- 12:30it's not an, a forever kind of a thing.
- 12:32It is like, you know, at the end of the sixth year they get, they
- 12:38need to be freed After they have served you 6 years, you must let
- 12:45them go free. Your ancestors, however, did not
- 12:48listen to me or pay attention to me.
- 12:51So see, people are not listening to God because that's what God
- 12:54said. That's the process by if you
- 12:56have debt, you can work for somebody for six years and then
- 12:59then you're free. Recently you repented and did
- 13:03what is right in my sight. Each of you proclaimed freedom
- 13:08to your own people. Now this is really important
- 13:10because God is a God of freedom. Like he doesn't even force us to
- 13:15love him. I mean, that would not be real
- 13:17love if you force somebody, but he gives us free will.
- 13:21He is a God of freedom. And and so this is something
- 13:26that gets, I guess, misapplied or misunderstood by people, but
- 13:31it's really important to know the character of God and to see
- 13:35it for what it is and don't try to twist Scripture to make it
- 13:41something actually, it would be like defamation against God is
- 13:49what I would say is that you're ruining his reputation by saying
- 13:53that he supports slavery because he doesn't not in the way that
- 13:57it's being alluded to in in, you know, when people say these
- 14:04kinds of things. So OK.
- 14:07And so God's saying to them, You even made a covenant before me
- 14:11in the house that bears my name. But now you have turned around
- 14:17and profaned my name. Each of you has taken back the
- 14:21male and female slaves you had set free to go where they
- 14:25wished. You have forced them to become
- 14:28your slaves again. So God's not happy with us.
- 14:32Now here is a consequence of rebellion to God.
- 14:36Therefore, this is what the Lord says.
- 14:40You have not obeyed me. You have not proclaimed freedom
- 14:46to your own people. So I now proclaim freedom for
- 14:52you, declares the Lord, freedom to fall by sword, plague and
- 14:58famine. I will make you abhorrent to all
- 15:03the kingdoms of the earth. Those who have violated My
- 15:07covenant and have not fulfilled the terms of the covenant they
- 15:11made before me, I will treat like the calf they cut in two
- 15:17and then walked between its pieces.
- 15:19Now this is something from the Old Testament when there was a
- 15:22covenant made. It goes way back, I thought to
- 15:25the book of Genesis where they actually like animals were
- 15:30sacrificed and then they walked between and that was like a, a
- 15:33symbol or a sign of a, a covenant.
- 15:37And maybe this study Bible will have more explanation on it, but
- 15:41that's what I recall. So this was some sort of a, a
- 15:45almost like a ritual process, but I don't know the
- 15:47significance of it and I'd have to study that a little bit more.
- 15:52But it was, you know, it was, it was something that was like a
- 15:56very, very sincere covenant agreement between and and God is
- 16:05faithful to his covenant, but his people are not faithful back
- 16:10to him. We are not always faithful to
- 16:14God. And then there are consequences
- 16:17that come from it. So verse 19, the leaders of
- 16:21Judah and Jerusalem, the court officials, the priests, and all
- 16:25the people of the land who walked between the pieces of the
- 16:28calf I will deliver into the hands of their enemies who want
- 16:34to kill them. Their dead bodies will become
- 16:37food for the birds and wild animals.
- 16:41So there are some pretty hefty consequences of disobeying God
- 16:47and not doing the right thing because we have to think He is a
- 16:50God of justice and He wants people to be free and His own
- 16:56people are enslaving people and he's not happy about that and
- 17:01he's bringing justice against his own people.
- 17:04This is where you can see God doesn't have any favoritism,
- 17:07like he chose Israel to be his people and where his name would
- 17:14be glorified throughout the earth.
- 17:16But he doesn't excuse their bad behavior.
- 17:22They still get the same consequences just like everyone
- 17:25else for their bad behavior. So it, you know, like it says
- 17:30God chooses, he can, you know, he's the creator.
- 17:33He can choose certain people for certain purposes and certain
- 17:38people for special purposes, but it doesn't mean that there's
- 17:43anything better about a person that he chooses.
- 17:46He often chooses A lowly person or, you know, like somebody.
- 17:52I mean, he, he chooses the opposite of the way we would in
- 17:56the world. We would always choose the very
- 17:59best, you know, in whatever way we describe best.
- 18:02But that's not the way God is. God is, he sees all people the
- 18:06same. And he just said, you know, this
- 18:07is the group that I'm going to work through.
- 18:09And he made a covenant with them.
- 18:12So they had a very special promise or covenant with God
- 18:17that should have been respected. But honestly, if any of us were
- 18:21in that position, we're all human.
- 18:24We probably would have done the same.
- 18:26Not every single one of us, but as a nation, just think about
- 18:31that. Like our nation right now is not
- 18:33godly. There, there may be some in our
- 18:36nation who are godly, but there's a lot that are not
- 18:39godly. And so as a whole, there's a lot
- 18:43of things that our nation is doing that is against God and
- 18:50what God says. And, and we are going to face
- 18:52judgement. I mean, when you follow history
- 18:54and you see what God does when people do not listen to him,
- 18:58there's going to be a judgement to pay.
- 19:00The people who do not listen to God are the ones who will pay
- 19:05for this. One thing that comes to mind
- 19:08right now is something that came up in our elections recently
- 19:12and, and it's been quite a number of times and it's very,
- 19:16very, very highly contested between opposing views and it
- 19:21has, it is abortion. And I know from Scripture that
- 19:26God does not support abortion. Abortion.
- 19:29God gives life and he's the only one who can determine when a
- 19:34life is taken, and He's the only one with authority.
- 19:38I know other people can do it to people, but that's murder and
- 19:42they will have consequences for that, whether it's in this
- 19:45earthly life or at judgement time.
- 19:48They will face God someday with this.
- 19:52So anyway, as a nation, we need to really we need to do the same
- 19:57thing that Jeremiah's telling Jerusalem to do.
- 20:00We need to repent and turn to God and and seek what he desires
- 20:05and pray for our country. That the Holy Spirit will begin
- 20:10to operate within people that are in power and positions of
- 20:14power. That the Holy Spirit will
- 20:16influence them to make godly decisions.
- 20:21And hopefully lessen the judgement that will come to our
- 20:26nation, but we are certainly due for some judgement and it
- 20:31doesn't go on forever unpunished.
- 20:34So it it's concerning, especially when you see what
- 20:37happened to Jerusalem, God's own people, where it was completely
- 20:42devastated. There were only two cities that
- 20:44were remaining, he said, And everything else is going to be
- 20:47put to fire. And all the people who stayed in
- 20:50Jerusalem were going to die in one of three ways.
- 20:55So, OK, back to verse 21. I will deliver Zedekiah, king of
- 21:01Judah and his officials into the hands of their enemies who want
- 21:05to kill them to the army of the king of Babylon, which has
- 21:09withdrawn from you. So he might be thinking, oh, the
- 21:13king of Babylon's already withdrawn.
- 21:15He's not coming back. But here's what God saying, no,
- 21:18he's going to come back for you. So verse 22, I am going to give
- 21:23the order, declares the Lord, and I will bring them back to
- 21:27the city. That's where we can see God is
- 21:30sovereign. He's in control of all this.
- 21:32He can use bad people for his purposes.
- 21:37So the people himself themselves will be they they do get
- 21:42punished for what they do against God's people, but God
- 21:45can use their free will and their desires that they don't
- 21:49like. Is Judah the tribe of Judah?
- 21:54Because we're talking about that right now.
- 21:56The king of Babylon doesn't like Judah and it's going to conquer
- 22:00there. And so that is in his heart to
- 22:04do that. And that's not necessarily what
- 22:07God wanted for his people. But because of their rebellion,
- 22:10he's allowing the enemy to succeed this time.
- 22:16And he's, you know, he's, he's behind it.
- 22:18It's not a surprise to him. He's warned these people, but
- 22:21nobody listened. They will fight against it, take
- 22:25it and burn it down. He's letting the enemy destroy
- 22:30his the place he calls its own Jerusalem.
- 22:35Look at that. And I will lay waste the towns
- 22:39of Judah so no one can live there.
- 22:44And that's the end of chapter 34.
- 22:48So I will read the study Bibles, commentaries and then we'll wrap
- 22:53it up. So why did nations conquered by
- 22:57Nebuchadnezzar fight against Jerusalem?
- 23:00Powerful nations demanded both tribute and allegiance from
- 23:04those they had conquered. It was advisable for a subjected
- 23:08people to comply with the wishes of their overlord.
- 23:12It was far better to aid the eventual victor than to oppose
- 23:17him. Another reason some were so
- 23:20willing to fight against Jerusalem may have stemmed from
- 23:25the rivalry between Judah and her neighbors.
- 23:29With no love lost between them, Judah's neighbors would have
- 23:33been glad to see Judah defeated. This is very much similar to
- 23:38today. How many of the surrounding
- 23:40countries around Israel would be happy to see Israel defeated?
- 23:46We're in a very similar situation to this time.
- 23:50OK, how could they take back their freed slaves?
- 23:55By law, no Jew was to remain in bondage more than six years, but
- 24:01the wealthy and the influential apparently had begun to ignore
- 24:05this command after King Josiah's death in six O 9 BC.
- 24:11Threatened by Babylon, King Zedekiah freed the slaves in an
- 24:16attempt to gain favor with God. But when the Babylonians lifted
- 24:22their siege to deal with an Egyptian offense, the former
- 24:27slave owners felt they could return to life as usual.
- 24:31They probably used their wealth and political clout to put the
- 24:35indentured workers back into bondage.
- 24:39How did they profane God's name? God desired to liberate, not
- 24:45enslave his people. God's nature is to release
- 24:50captives. Sin's nature is to people in
- 24:54bondage. Think about that.
- 24:58So, you know, if we are a slave to sin, the Bible does say that
- 25:03like when before we we, our eyes are opened, we don't even know
- 25:08it. We're a slave to sin until we
- 25:11invite the Holy Spirit in, until we believe in Jesus and the Holy
- 25:14Spirit comes to us, we're pretty much blinded.
- 25:17We don't even know it. Since God's name represents his
- 25:21character, to attack his character, whether by word or
- 25:25deed, is to profane his name. So I think we could people could
- 25:32be profaning God's name when they say God is.
- 25:37He condones slavery because of what they're saying.
- 25:42They're giving him a bad name by associating God with slavery
- 25:45when that is not who he is. That is not the character of
- 25:48God. If we read the whole Bible, we
- 25:51realize that is not. But when people don't know the
- 25:55whole Bible, when they don't have the Holy Spirit, when
- 25:58they're confused or they're seeking and they see some
- 26:00things, they misinterpret things.
- 26:03And that's why it's so important to study this and to, I mean, go
- 26:09deeper than you know and ask God about confusing things like God,
- 26:13how can this be? You're the creator.
- 26:15Please help me understand what this is.
- 26:18And and God says if we seek him, we will find him, so he'll
- 26:21answer our questions. Because Jeremiah's countrymen
- 26:26lived in a way contrary to the nature of God, They profaned
- 26:30God's name and corrupted his character.
- 26:34So here's that question about the slaughtered calf.
- 26:38Why did they walk between the halves of a slaughtered calf?
- 26:43In ancient times, sacrificing an animal and dividing it along the
- 26:48spine was part of the process of making a covenant.
- 26:53The parties to the covenant then walked between the halves and
- 26:57met in the middle to take their solemn oath.
- 27:01Many think the custom implied that if one of the parties
- 27:06violated the terms of this covenant, then he, like the
- 27:10animal, was to be cut in two. Some some believe God was
- 27:16promising judgement because the people had broken their covenant
- 27:21with him. And that concludes chapter 34.
- 27:26So I hope, I hope these are meaningful or significant.
- 27:32And if they are, please share them with others and please come
- 27:36back again or subscribe to this podcast.
- 27:41The main thing is that I personally want to grow closer
- 27:45to God and we do. So like we said, you know,
- 27:48through reading the word about God, about Christ.
- 27:51And so it's really something important for all of us because
- 27:57we need to stay close to the Word because the world will
- 28:02pollute our thinking. And if we just listen to what's
- 28:06in the world, we'll be far from God.
- 28:08But if we stay in the Word, we'll be close to God.
