- 0:00Sometimes expansion for us works a lot like plants.
- 0:03If you want a plant to grow bigger, you have to find a bigger pot.
- 0:06You have to give it room for the roots to expand. Well, don't expect
- 0:11expansion if you're unwilling to change pots. Welcome to
- 0:14the Revolution of Purpose Podcast. I'm your host, John Streit, and each week
- 0:18we bring you conversations with thought leaders,
- 0:21entrepreneurs, and individuals who have aligned their life with
- 0:24purpose and created extraordinary results. So I'm going to live through
- 0:28it and accept it radically with grace and hope and love.
- 0:32I mean, I would be proud to be in this household. It was an honor.
- 0:35I had so much fun. Tune in every Monday for the Revolution of Purpose
- 0:38solo show and every Thursday for Revolution of Purpose Conversations.
- 0:43Welcome back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast. I'm John Streit.
- 0:46And today I want to talk to you about something that I believe is absolutely
- 0:50essential if you want to create a different reality in your life.
- 0:54Most of us think we have something that we really want to
- 0:58expand, and that could be your business or that could be your financial
- 1:01prosperity. Maybe you want a healthier relationship or
- 1:05you want to make a bigger impact. Maybe there's a dream that you've carried for
- 1:09years that you're finally ready to pursue. And when we
- 1:13think about creating those things, our first question is usually, what do
- 1:16I need to do? Like, what strategy do I need? Or what
- 1:20habit do I need? What connection do I need to make?
- 1:23Or what opportunity do I need to fall into? But I
- 1:27believe there is a question that has to come before all of those. And that
- 1:31is this: who do I need to become? Because your next
- 1:35life may require a new identity, and becoming that person
- 1:40may require you to release an identity that has already served
- 1:44its purpose for you. Think about a plant that's growing in a pot. When that
- 1:48plant is small, the pot gives it exactly what it needs. It provides
- 1:52structure. It gives the roots somewhere to grow. It supports the plant
- 1:57as it develops. But eventually something happens. You see,
- 2:00the plants grow and, and then the roots start to expand.
- 2:04And that same pot that once supported the plant can eventually become
- 2:08the very thing that is restricting its growth. There's nothing wrong with
- 2:13the plant and there's nothing necessarily wrong with the pot. It's just
- 2:16the plant has simply outgrown the container. And I
- 2:20think that happens to all of us. Sometimes we look at our
- 2:24lives and we think, Why am I not growing? Why can't I break through
- 2:28this level? Why do I keep ending up in this same place over
- 2:32and over again? Why do I keep setting bigger goals and
- 2:36then somehow returning to what I've always known? And maybe you're
- 2:40not incapable of growing. Maybe you've just simply outgrown
- 2:44the identity that you've been trying to grow inside. The way you
- 2:48have seen yourself, those stories you've told about yourself,
- 2:52those, those beliefs that are becoming limiting beliefs that you've
- 2:55just accepted. The expectations that you've developed,
- 2:59the way you feel like you've let yourself down when you haven't hit those expectations,
- 3:03the definition that you've created for what success looks like for
- 3:07someone like you, or what the lack of success looks like for someone
- 3:11like you— those things all form a container. And you can keep asking for
- 3:16expansion all day long, and you can create vision boards, you can write goals,
- 3:20you can set affirmations, you can pray for bigger opportunities,
- 3:24but at some some point, you have to be willing to change pods.
- 3:28You can't expect expansion if you're unwilling
- 3:31to change pods. This is one of the things that I love about the work
- 3:35of Maxwell Maltz in Psycho-Cybernetics. You know, Maltz taught
- 3:39that our behavior is enormously influenced by our self-image,
- 3:43our internal picture of who we believe ourselves to be.
- 3:47And I often describe that self-image like a thermostat.
- 3:50You've probably heard me say this before. You can temporarily heat
- 3:54the room up or cool the room down, but if the thermostat is still programmed
- 3:58to the old temperature, eventually the system will try to
- 4:02return the room to what is familiar. And we do that
- 4:06same thing. We create a little success and then maybe we sabotage
- 4:10it. We make more money than we're used to, then somehow we find ourselves
- 4:14back at the same financial level. We start taking care of ourselves,
- 4:19maybe physically we're going to the gym, and then all of a sudden we
- 4:23start returning to the old habits of eating junk food or sleeping in.
- 4:27We receive an opportunity that we've always wanted, but then suddenly
- 4:31we're filled with all the reasons that we're not ready for it. We think the
- 4:35problem is discipline, but oftentimes it isn't. You see,
- 4:38sometimes our circumstances have expanded beyond
- 4:42what our identity has learned to accept as normal. The plant
- 4:46is trying to grow, but the pot has not changed.
- 4:50A few episodes ago on the solo show, I talked about something called
- 4:54the vacuum law of prosperity. And at its simplest, the idea is
- 4:58this, that creating space allows something new to enter.
- 5:02And usually when you think about this, we think about externally,
- 5:05like maybe you clean out your closet and you release a possession
- 5:09you no longer need. You walk away from commitments that no longer align with your
- 5:13life. Maybe you finally release something that you've been holding
- 5:16onto because you're afraid there won't be anything on the
- 5:20other side. But I've been thinking about this principle a little bit differently now.
- 5:23What if one of the most important things that we can release is
- 5:27actually our identity that we have outgrown? Because sometimes
- 5:31we're asking for a new life while we're simultaneously clinging
- 5:35to the identity of the one that created that old We're saying,
- 5:39I want greater prosperity, and we're saying that I'm still identifying
- 5:43as someone who never had enough, but I wish I had more than enough.
- 5:47I want to build something extraordinary, but I'm still identifying as
- 5:52someone who needs somebody else's approval. Maybe we're saying, I want to
- 5:55make a bigger impact, but deep down you're still identifying as someone who
- 6:00shouldn't take up too much space. You want a healthy relationship, but you're
- 6:04also seeing yourself through the eyes of rejection
- 6:07that you experienced years ago. I want to pursue my purpose,
- 6:11but still down deep, what if I'm identifying as the person
- 6:14who failed the last time they tried something new?
- 6:18At some point, something has to be released, and that's
- 6:22where the vacuum law becomes an identity principle. You create space
- 6:26for what you're becoming by releasing the attachment
- 6:30to who you've been. But there's something important that I want to say
- 6:34right here. You see, releasing an old identity doesn't mean condemning your
- 6:37former self. Please pardon this interruption to your podcast episode.
- 6:41This will not take but a minute. Before we continue, I want to ask you
- 6:44something. Do you know that you're capable of more, but your life right now just
- 6:47isn't fully reflecting the person you know you can become?
- 6:51Then I want to personally invite you to schedule a Shift Mindset call
- 6:55with me. This Shift Mindset experience is something that I created
- 7:00to help you identify one decision that you can make that will shift your

- 7:07that. This is a live, one-on-one personal

- 8:04to create their best life through also living their own revolution of purpose.
- 8:08Now let's get you back to the Revolution of Purpose podcast.
- 8:12I think we sometimes approach personal development almost
- 8:16with like a violence of sorts. Like we talk about destroying
- 8:19the old you. And I don't think that's necessary because maybe
- 8:23that old identity served you. You know, maybe being cautious
- 8:27at times was a safety mechanism that was protecting you during a
- 8:31difficult season of your life. Maybe seeking approval
- 8:35helped you feel safe, or playing small helped you to
- 8:39connect with people that you were afraid of losing at that time. Or maybe the
- 8:43person that you've been got you through something incredibly difficult
- 8:46and you were in a survival mode at the time. You don't have to hate
- 8:50the old pot. You can honor it. You can be thankful and
- 8:54grateful for the ways that it helped you grow or feel safe in
- 8:58that moment. But gratitude for where you've been doesn't require you
- 9:02to remain there. There comes a point where the greatest way
- 9:06you can honor everything you've survived, everything that you've learned, and everything
- 9:10you've experienced is to grow.
- 9:14So this is why the process that I teach begins with awakening.
- 9:18You know, you have to awaken to the fact that the identity you've been living
- 9:22from is not necessarily the truth of who you are in this moment.
- 9:26Some of it was inherited, and some of it came from your experiences.
- 9:30Some of it came from things people said to you, from, from words
- 9:35spoken over you from people that were trusted, like parents
- 9:39or teachers or Sunday school teachers. You know, some of it came from failures,
- 9:43some of it came from success, some of it came from what your
- 9:46family believed was possible or what you witnessed when
- 9:50you were young. Some of it came from culture and some from fear.
- 9:53But once you awaken to that, then you can
- 9:57move on into becoming. You become by saying, who am I choosing
- 10:01to become right now? Not, not someday, but now.
- 10:05And then we talk about aligning, because once you become that
- 10:08person, then you start to take aligned action with the beliefs
- 10:13that that person believes about themselves. What action aligns with
- 10:16that person? What relationships align with that version of you?
- 10:20What habits align with that new identity? What language aligns
- 10:24with that person? What needs to be released because
- 10:28it belongs to the identity that you've left behind? And then comes create,
- 10:32because when your identity and your actions begin moving in the same direction,
- 10:36then you begin creating the reality that reflects the person
- 10:40that you're becoming. And that's how we get the Law
- 10:43of Identity Transformation, where we awaken, we become, we align,
- 10:47and we create. Your reality begins changing because
- 10:51you are changing. What pot have you outgrown?
- 10:55I really want you to think about this this week. Choose one area of your
- 10:59life where you desire expansion. You don't have
- 11:02to think about 10. Choose one. Maybe it's your income or your business.
- 11:06It could be your health, your relationships, your purpose, your spiritual life,
- 11:10your creativity. Just something inside of you where there's an area that says,
- 11:14I know that there is more for me. Like, I know that there's more available
- 11:18for me in this area of my life. And I want you to ask yourself
- 11:22this: what identity created that current
- 11:26reality in that area? You don't have to judge the answer, just become
- 11:29aware of it. And then ask, what part of that identity do
- 11:34I need to release to create space for who I'm becoming?
- 11:37Maybe it's that I'm releasing the identity of someone who always
- 11:41has to struggle. I'm releasing the identity of someone who needs
- 11:45permission. I'm releasing the identity of someone
- 11:49who isn't good with money, or I'm releasing the identity of someone who always
- 11:53gets overlooked. I'm releasing the identity of someone whose best
- 11:57years are behind them. I'm releasing the identity of someone who starts things
- 12:01but never finishes. Whatever it is, I want you to write this down.
- 12:06I want you to write down, I am releasing the identity of blank.
- 12:10And then underneath it, write down, I am becoming someone who blank.
- 12:14Don't just write it though. Ask yourself, if that were already
- 12:18true, what would I do today? And then take an action.
- 12:21Do something, even if it's small, from that new identity,
- 12:25because becoming isn't something that you're waiting to experience.
- 12:29Becoming is something that you practice. There is a version
- 12:33of your life that may require more room than you
- 12:36currently allow in your present identity. And maybe,
- 12:40maybe you've been trying to force that expansion inside a container that
- 12:45you've already outgrown. So perhaps the answer is not trying harder.
- 12:48Perhaps it isn't another strategy. Perhaps it isn't another vision
- 12:52board or another goal card or waiting for someone to give you permission.
- 12:57Maybe it's finally recognizing that this pot served me
- 13:01well, but it can no longer contain where I'm going.
- 13:04My friends, honor where you've been, release what no longer
- 13:08belongs, and make room for who you're becoming.
- 13:12Make room for that new identity that dreams bigger than you've ever dreamt before.
- 13:17Make room for the goals that are so big they scare you a little bit
- 13:21because your next life to hit those goals will require
- 13:24a new identity. And maybe, just maybe, the life that you've
- 13:28been asking for isn't waiting for you to work harder. Maybe it's
- 13:32waiting for you to finally make room for the person that you're
- 13:35becoming. Thank you so much for watching this episode of Revolution of Purpose.
