Latest / The Gospel Briefing / Voter ID Blocked, Zuckerberg's Tax Deal & DOJ Doomsday
Transcript
- Twelve days to the midterms. The rules are still moving. This is The Gospel Briefing. I'm Charles King. The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that New Hampshire can reject student IDs at the polls next month. The state passed House Bill three twenty-three in April. Governor Kelly Ayotte signed it. It took effect June second, removing student IDs from accepted voter identification. A lower court judge tried to soften the rollout, telling officials to still weigh student IDs when voters lacked other proof. The high court said no. Too close to the election. They cited the Purcell principle — the idea that late court orders breed voter confusion. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented sharply. She argued the lower court was preventing confusion, not causing it. Here's the honest part. Christians will land in different places on this one. Election integrity matters. Ballot access matters. Both are real biblical concerns about justice and truth. But the deeper story is a country where voting rules are being litigated right up to the final hour. That will tempt you to anxiety. Scripture speaks to that instinct. In First Timothy chapter two, Paul tells the church to pray for kings and all in high positions — not so our side wins, but so we may lead peaceful and quiet lives, godly and dignified in every way. That is the posture. Pray. Then live faithfully. If you want to sit with Paul's instruction today, open First Timothy two in Bible Copilot and follow along. Development two. Mark Zuckerberg and Meta reached what the company calls a Founder Alignment Agreement. Zuckerberg, worth over two hundred billion dollars, told the board last month he was considering leaving California. The reason — a proposed one-time five percent tax on residents worth more than one billion dollars. For him, roughly ten billion in state taxes. Meta's response — create a new class of stock and give him more of it. For eight years. As long as he stays in California. His estimated effective California tax rate in recent years was under one percent. A board rearranging the furniture so the founder doesn't feel the bill. Proverbs eleven twenty-eight says it plainly — whoever trusts in his riches will fall. Wealth is not the warning. Insulation is. And insulation is spiritually dangerous. Development three. Attorney General Todd Blanche told reporters in Virginia Thursday he would not rule out Justice Department intervention in state election certification. He floated what he called a "doomsday scenario." He also insisted he was not planning his days around stopping certification. Under the Constitution, elections are run by states, not the federal government. Senate Democrats say they're preparing to push back. Lawsuits are flying in multiple directions. Micah chapter six, verse eight — do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with your God. Honest elections are justice. Humility is not grabbing power the law does not give you. That standard applies to every official in every administration. Pray for wisdom today before you repeat what you have heard. And pray specifically for the election workers in your county. They are mostly volunteers. They need wisdom and protection. This episode is presented by Bible Copilot. Open Bible Copilot and start with today's Verse of the Day from Isaiah chapter forty. Walk through it as a guided study — what the passage says, what it means, what it teaches about God, and how to apply it this week. Three questions each day are free. Isaiah forty, verses twenty-three and twenty-four. "He brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows on them, and they wither." Court rulings move. Billionaires negotiate. Attorneys general posture. Isaiah has seen it all before. God is not nervous about November. Thanks for listening to The Gospel Briefing. Carry your vote seriously. Carry your peace more seriously. I'll see you Monday.
