- 0:09Speaker 1: and you're listening to Movie Meltdown. Get her, boys!
- 0:19Speaker 2: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:21Speaker 2: Picture Association of America.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It's showtime, folks.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Enjoy the show.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I've always wanted to fight a desperate battle against incredible odds.
- 1:32Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:33Speaker 3: How do I act normal in front of these people?
- 1:38Speaker 1: Shut down audio. Shut down audio.
- 1:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, yeah, exactly. That's why I was like going like, yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 3: I'll do the show. I can actually talk to somebody
- 1:46Speaker 3: who knows what I'm talking about.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well, that's, I mean, that's the thing that was amazing
- 1:52Speaker 1: with us last time. It's like, again, we'd never been
- 1:54Speaker 1: in the same physical space in our lives before. And
- 1:57Speaker 1: like immediately we were just like knee deep into a
- 2:00Speaker 1: conversation that like, again, like we do with anybody else
- 2:04Speaker 1: who's kind of of the same ilk. Like we're just like, ah,
- 2:08Speaker 1: geek speak. We got it. We got this down. Like,
- 2:10Speaker 1: so we immediately jumped into it and it like was perfect.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Like that's, that's what, when you find other people of
- 2:16Speaker 1: your tribe.
- 2:17Speaker 3: It's all good. It's a tribe thing. I mean, that's
- 2:21Speaker 3: why I was like excited about, about Dragon Con before
- 2:24Speaker 3: I actually did it last time, because the first time
- 2:27Speaker 3: I did Dragon Con, it was the first time back,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, way back in the nineties.
- 2:33Speaker 1: In the olden days of the dragon, he was a
- 2:36Speaker 1: teenage dragon.
- 2:37Speaker 3: That's right. I was like, it was the first like
- 2:41Speaker 3: total tribal soak where I was just like surrounded by everybody.
- 2:46Speaker 3: And it was like having conversations with total strangers about
- 2:48Speaker 3: this stuff, you know, deep interesting uh conversational you know
- 2:53Speaker 3: whatever right right exactly right as in not like philosophically
- 2:59Speaker 3: deep but like you know deep dive sometimes we.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Get philosophical you know i'm still trying to figure out
- 3:07Speaker 1: life you.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Know right right right doing it through dorky movies so
- 3:11Speaker 3: right exactly so so you know that was a big
- 3:14Speaker 3: thing but it was like good grief I think the
- 3:16Speaker 3: most interesting thing that happened at DragonCon the last time
- 3:20Speaker 3: was when I was listening to some music and standing
- 3:24Speaker 3: in the middle of the road and somebody did just
- 3:26Speaker 3: politely save my life as I was trying to... So
- 3:31Speaker 3: there is that sense of community. So people are still
- 3:34Speaker 3: kind of like, hey, we're all part of the same thing.
- 3:36Speaker 3: But it's so big now that it was like a
- 3:40Speaker 3: circuit breaker throw.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But was this during the parade or were you just
- 3:44Speaker 1: wandering into traffic as you're prone to do?
- 3:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I was just kind of like off in
- 3:50Speaker 3: my own planet.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Many of the time, one of the kids is like, Dad,
- 3:54Speaker 1: get out of the street.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Damn. what what oh it's like dad you put the
- 4:00Speaker 3: you put the milk in the uh pantry again it's
- 4:02Speaker 3: like uh oh right sorry you're.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Pouring orange juice on my cereal dad.
- 4:06Speaker 3: You're doing this wrong yeah yeah everybody's called the litany
- 4:10Speaker 3: of names i don't really differentiate their names they're all
- 4:13Speaker 3: uh you know uh it's all like hey hey sir
- 4:16Speaker 3: cam abby and they just pick one pick one and
- 4:19Speaker 3: uh But no, we were talking about, so it's like
- 4:23Speaker 3: all this crap in your head and everything. And, you know,
- 4:27Speaker 3: Steph was talking to me last night just about like,
- 4:31Speaker 3: if it was just because i was talking about some
- 4:33Speaker 3: crap i was talking about the movie and um and
- 4:36Speaker 3: she was like you know if it was just a
- 4:38Speaker 3: way you're like you're like an idiot savant and it's
- 4:41Speaker 3: like there was just some way we could monetize all
- 4:45Speaker 3: that crap in your head you know in a you
- 4:47Speaker 3: know but uh you know it could be good you
- 4:51Speaker 3: know and i was going like and i was going
- 4:53Speaker 3: like I was thinking, yeah, it's worthless crap. You know, nobody,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you can't monetize just because I know who directed Friday
- 5:00Speaker 3: the 13th part five, you know, it's just like, you
- 5:03Speaker 3: can't put that anywhere in life, you know, but.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Especially now, like, well, I mean, there used to be
- 5:10Speaker 1: a novelty to that. Like again, when, when I was
- 5:13Speaker 1: coming up in this, like I didn't know people that
- 5:16Speaker 1: were like that until I started working in a video
- 5:18Speaker 1: store and I'm like, Oh, the other geeks, I get it.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But we were like a handful of, Whereas now the
- 5:24Speaker 1: pop culture has taken over regular culture so that like
- 5:28Speaker 1: a lot of people know way more of this dorky
- 5:31Speaker 1: stuff than they ever used to. So that's the thing.
- 5:34Speaker 1: There was a time you probably could have like monetized that.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Like if you put the right spin on it, landed
- 5:39Speaker 1: in the right spot, you really could be like. because
- 5:42Speaker 1: it was different, you could do something with it. Whereas
- 5:45Speaker 1: now every idiot has a podcast. Every person in the
- 5:49Speaker 1: world knows about Friday, 13th part five, and we'll call
- 5:52Speaker 1: other people out for not thinking it was the best
- 5:54Speaker 1: one or the worst one or whatever they're pushing that week.
- 5:57Speaker 3: That's right.
- 5:57Speaker 1: That's right.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Whatever the, the, the, the, uh, the massive consciousness has
- 6:02Speaker 3: deemed Friday the 13th part five to be this week,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Whatever direction we've taken on this episode. I feel like
- 6:09Speaker 1: a lot of shows are like that. It's like, they
- 6:11Speaker 1: like they're in debate club. Like, well, this time I'm
- 6:13Speaker 1: going to choose the stance of thinking number five is
- 6:16Speaker 1: the best interpretation of Jason that has ever existed. And
- 6:20Speaker 1: then two weeks later, you'll hear him talking shit about it.
- 6:22Speaker 3: So, right. Yeah. Yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Like a purposeful misleading hot take.
- 6:28Speaker 3: Right. Right. Cause I was like the podcast clickbait.
- 6:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I mean, I was like, uh, It's just like, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 3: we're going to really shake shit up tonight.
- 6:41Speaker 1: You know, I never like, like, again, mine is never
- 6:45Speaker 1: any different than my normal conversations with, again, with a
- 6:49Speaker 1: handful of people who actually know what I'm talking about.
- 6:51Speaker 1: But if I realize that's that kind of person, I
- 6:54Speaker 1: will still launch into the exact same. So I'm not
- 6:56Speaker 1: trying to push buttons. I'm not trying to like something
- 7:00Speaker 1: out there that's going to, revolutionize things it's just my
- 7:04Speaker 1: same dumb.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Opinion nobody's excusing uh uh movie about being info wars definitely.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Well and and i feel that talking to people too
- 7:16Speaker 1: like if you go and talk to actors or directors
- 7:18Speaker 1: like they are like used to some people that are
- 7:20Speaker 1: trying to like gotcha you know just like put them
- 7:24Speaker 1: in like set them up and lure them into some
- 7:26Speaker 1: and i'm just like I'm just, we're just going to talk. Like,
- 7:29Speaker 1: I don't, I don't have any agenda. Like I just
- 7:31Speaker 1: tell me stories about when you made a movie. Like that's,
- 7:34Speaker 1: that's the highest point I have in this conversation. These
- 7:37Speaker 1: are my goals.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Oh my gosh. You're like scream machine podcast. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: got Linda Blair to admit William Friedkin had sex with her.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I don't, I don't push for that.
- 7:52Speaker 3: That podcast is hard hitting journalism.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I mean, that's kind of what, well, I mean, that's
- 8:00Speaker 1: what our regular world version of media became. Like from
- 8:04Speaker 1: the 90s on, everything became a current affair style journalism.
- 8:09Speaker 1: So like everything now is like, so much of the
- 8:13Speaker 1: stuff I see on TV that are hours of the
- 8:16Speaker 1: day that used to be legitimate news is just garbage now.
- 8:20Speaker 1: And I'm just like, yeah. Like even the entertainment shows
- 8:23Speaker 1: are set up that way. So I can't watch that.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Like when I was a kid and dorky as it is,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I fucking loved entertainment tonight. Hell, even entertainment tonight is
- 8:32Speaker 1: set up like it's current affair now. It's like, it's
- 8:34Speaker 1: still set up to be some sort of cheesy, look
- 8:38Speaker 1: at this, some freaky news. I'm just like, just go
- 8:42Speaker 1: stand behind the scenes and shoot some people shooting a movie.
- 8:44Speaker 1: That's it. That's all I liked when I was a kid.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You talk to people making movies. That's the reason I'm
- 8:49Speaker 1: here now.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, right. So it's like, yeah. And a
- 8:53Speaker 3: lot of them are like, it's not even, there is
- 8:56Speaker 3: zero substance. It's like those alien shows. It's like, does
- 9:01Speaker 3: Natalie Portman have bulimia? And if so, is she a blah, blah,
- 9:07Speaker 3: blah type of? Let's talk to this psychiatrist for five
- 9:11Speaker 3: hours on the one thing that we just made up.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And now we're like, I have a talking head to
- 9:16Speaker 3: talk about my made up bullshit.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I mean, it is essentially tabloid. That's why it became
- 9:22Speaker 1: tabloid TV. And now it's just tabloid podcasting. And because
- 9:26Speaker 1: it's basically just taking the headline. Does Natalie Portman have bulimia?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Question mark. And the question mark is the whole show.
- 9:33Speaker 1: It's the whole thing because we don't know. She's not
- 9:36Speaker 1: on here. She's not going to tell us. So, let's
- 9:40Speaker 1: shoot the shit around that question mark the rest of
- 9:42Speaker 1: this time. And I'm just like, who cares?
- 9:45Speaker 3: It's like, in the talking heads, it's kind of like that.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Everything's kind of like Best Week Ever from, what was.
- 9:52Speaker 1: That, VH1?
- 9:52Speaker 7: VH1.
- 9:52Speaker 3: It's just like random random celebrities that like like they
- 9:59Speaker 3: know shit you know talking about some pop culture show
- 10:03Speaker 3: you're going like wow this is like this is like
- 10:06Speaker 3: I feel myself dying but it's kind of like that
- 10:08Speaker 3: nice You know, it's kind of like overdosing on morphine.
- 10:15Speaker 3: That's the way to come.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Up our society now. Kind of like overdosing on morphine.
- 10:23Speaker 3: It's like those old war movies, like, just give them
- 10:25Speaker 3: the shot, you know, so they don't feel pain.
- 10:29Speaker 1: As it goes.
- 10:30Speaker 3: I thought you.
- 10:31Speaker 1: Were going more with the, just leave me. It's fine,
- 10:34Speaker 1: just leave me.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Right, right. Yeah, that would be good too.
- 10:38Speaker 1: That's the mental part of our society. Just leave me.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Just run with your tabloids and your crazy talk. It's fine.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You don't need logic or truth. Keep on running.
- 10:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I mean, probably the best job in the
- 10:52Speaker 3: world would have been to work for like Weekly World News,
- 10:55Speaker 3: you know?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Oh, Lord. If I could just share an office with Batboy.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That would be the greatest thing.
- 11:03Speaker 3: Yeah. Can you imagine that? You just got to crank
- 11:06Speaker 3: out these absolutely bonkers stories, you know, week after week. Like,
- 11:11Speaker 3: is Stonehenge ancient technology a landing pad for the gods
- 11:17Speaker 3: or something like that? I don't know. That would be pain,
- 11:20Speaker 3: you know, compared to... They were.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Probably pulling in people who, like, worked in journalism. So
- 11:24Speaker 1: it probably was, like, really hard for them at the
- 11:26Speaker 1: time to... Whereas I bet both you and I, at
- 11:30Speaker 1: least three times a week, randomly just in our normal
- 11:34Speaker 1: conversation with unwilling victims, say something that would easily be
- 11:38Speaker 1: a headline for Weekly World News.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Easily. Easily. Yeah, definitely. I've always thought that would have
- 11:43Speaker 3: been just the coolest job, you know, and everything.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:46Speaker 3: But no, have you seen the documentary on The Enquirer
- 11:51Speaker 3: that has come out recently?
- 11:52Speaker 1: I know there was one. I heard somebody else talking
- 11:56Speaker 1: about it, but I haven't watched it.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I have.
- 11:59Speaker 8: I have.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And it's really good. And I recommend it just because
- 12:03Speaker 3: it does... have this nice rhythm to it with, especially
- 12:08Speaker 3: during the stuff in the eighties and everything about the
- 12:11Speaker 3: lifestyle they were living and the assignments that were going.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And it was the guy who owned it was very real,
- 12:19Speaker 3: kind of like interesting guy and like, like kind of patriarchal,
- 12:27Speaker 3: just a father figure, you know, dad.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Respectable publisher, like Larry Flint kind of a thing. Right.
- 12:38Speaker 8: Right.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Like, like Larry Flint, but like, you know, probably
- 12:41Speaker 3: some mob ties, but you know, he did care about
- 12:44Speaker 3: the paper and he did care about his people. And, uh,
- 12:48Speaker 3: but it was a very cut throat thing too. He
- 12:51Speaker 3: cared about the people if they could deliver, you know, basically,
- 12:54Speaker 3: but they were talking about, you know, to get a scoop,
- 12:57Speaker 3: you know, uh, private jets, uh, It was basically sex, drugs,
- 13:03Speaker 3: and rock and roll to get these stories and to
- 13:06Speaker 3: treat their people. And, and these people feel like they
- 13:10Speaker 3: kind of like are talking about it as if it
- 13:13Speaker 3: was like this crazy dream they had. And they're looking
- 13:18Speaker 3: back at it going like, did that all really happen?
- 13:20Speaker 3: You know? So it's, it's, it's really cool. But there
- 13:25Speaker 3: were people, you know, you know, with, major journalism degrees
- 13:28Speaker 3: who did feel like they were slumming, but you know,
- 13:32Speaker 3: when you're making that much money, you're, you're kind of like.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Oh, it's also, it's funny. Just listening to you talk
- 13:39Speaker 1: about it. I'm thinking, I'm like, it is thinking back
- 13:42Speaker 1: on it. It's such a simpler time. It's sad that it's,
- 13:45Speaker 1: it's not like I'm thinking back to the 1820s. Like
- 13:48Speaker 1: it's a few years ago in my lifespan, but I'm
- 13:51Speaker 1: just like thinking back on it. Like, the weekly world
- 13:55Speaker 1: news and the national inquire were like the fringe edges
- 13:59Speaker 1: of like the craziest thing out there. Like everything else
- 14:02Speaker 1: was pretty generic and normal and all other news and
- 14:06Speaker 1: publishing even was pretty straight laced compared to that. Whereas
- 14:10Speaker 1: now it's just, everything's a cesspool. Like everything is just
- 14:15Speaker 1: insanity at all times.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And so, you know, I mean, I've got an appreciation
- 14:22Speaker 3: for that cesspool, you know, and everything. I can differentiate
- 14:26Speaker 3: the bouquets, you know, and everything of the cesses, you know. But,
- 14:31Speaker 3: you know, so, I mean, you know, some of it,
- 14:35Speaker 3: you know, it's just like, bland bubble gum garbage, you know,
- 14:38Speaker 3: but a good trashy story is just always good, you know?
- 14:41Speaker 1: And I'm one that enjoys a good bubble gum. So
- 14:45Speaker 1: even the bubble gum, if you put the right, put
- 14:47Speaker 1: the right flavoring into it, I am on board.
- 14:50Speaker 3: So, you know, you know, it doesn't all have to be,
- 14:52Speaker 3: you know, uh, Russian novels, you know, you can, you know,
- 14:59Speaker 3: to wade in the cesspool is kind of nice sometimes,
- 15:01Speaker 3: you know, and everything. And, you can name your parasites
- 15:05Speaker 3: and all that kind of stuff.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I hang out there all the time.
- 15:09Speaker 3: That's right. What they were saying in this documentary was
- 15:13Speaker 3: definitely I recommend, but they were saying this was for
- 15:19Speaker 3: people who just didn't take this thing seriously. It was
- 15:23Speaker 3: just something light reading after you've worked all week and
- 15:27Speaker 3: you just want something nice to sit and drink your
- 15:31Speaker 3: coffee to and just kind of you know unplug from
- 15:34Speaker 3: reality and read this stuff about rich people having fucked
- 15:38Speaker 3: up lives just like you you know and um that's
- 15:41Speaker 3: what the point of the paper was and then later
- 15:47Speaker 3: coming around the gary hart era you know they started
- 15:50Speaker 3: diving into politics and now it's basically uh a voice
- 15:55Speaker 3: of of course i haven't read it in years but
- 15:57Speaker 3: according to the documentary now it's like the inquirer is
- 16:01Speaker 3: like a mouthpiece for like let a far right politics,
- 16:07Speaker 3: you know, but I mean, it's like buddies with the
- 16:10Speaker 3: current president and stuff like that, but I don't know.
- 16:14Speaker 1: That's how you put it in perspective though. And I've
- 16:16Speaker 1: thought of that recently and I don't ever want to
- 16:18Speaker 1: get into politics cause it's all bullshit and I don't care.
- 16:21Speaker 1: But to use that as like a dividing line, like
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Gary Hart story, Think about what was going on there.
- 16:29Speaker 1: That toppled his empire. He was headed for the White
- 16:34Speaker 1: House and this one photo came out and allegedly, we
- 16:39Speaker 1: don't know, there's a movie about it if you want
- 16:41Speaker 1: to watch, I don't know what the hell he did,
- 16:42Speaker 1: but basically it was based on one photo maybe he
- 16:47Speaker 1: was cheating what i'm like look at the shit that's
- 16:50Speaker 1: going on now that happened is proven is documented and
- 16:54Speaker 1: people are like whatever and go right on with their
- 16:57Speaker 1: lives and just like yeah once again a short span
- 17:00Speaker 1: of time there to watch things completely turn like it
- 17:04Speaker 1: is a strange world we've ended up in.
- 17:07Speaker 3: You could almost just say like, you know, I mean,
- 17:11Speaker 3: you could almost be like a conspiracy theorist, like the
- 17:13Speaker 3: news becoming so tabloid just so we can. So we
- 17:17Speaker 3: don't bat an eye when people, you know, behave badly.
- 17:21Speaker 3: So when our public feet, we don't hold them accountable
- 17:23Speaker 3: anymore because we just don't care anymore because we're so
- 17:25Speaker 3: numb because. every second is a scandal. And, you know,
- 17:29Speaker 3: like Biden's got this person telling him, it ain't going
- 17:32Speaker 3: to keep them from running. I mean, and Trump is like,
- 17:37Speaker 3: it's well known, you know, it's like, or there's like, who,
- 17:41Speaker 3: we're just like, I don't know. I don't know. I'm just,
- 17:44Speaker 3: I don't know. It doesn't make it anymore.
- 17:46Speaker 1: You know, the only thing like the only refreshing, like
- 17:52Speaker 1: immersing yourself back into the olden days. I've, i've always
- 17:57Speaker 1: thought this was kind of fun but now i watched
- 18:00Speaker 1: it again recently on like saturday mornings because there's no cartoons.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Anymore damn it but.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I think we've covered already but like now one because
- 18:08Speaker 1: everything has to be educational television as well right so
- 18:11Speaker 1: they've got a couple of the shows in a row
- 18:13Speaker 1: have like kids doing the reporting to set up the
- 18:16Speaker 1: next segment and it's so like They're so like trying
- 18:21Speaker 1: to be official, like they're what newscasters used to be like.
- 18:24Speaker 1: So like they're trying to keep it straight. They're trying
- 18:26Speaker 1: to be official. They're trying to read their lines.
- 18:28Speaker 7: Right.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Like they're trying really hard. And like, yeah, grownups do
- 18:31Speaker 1: that anymore because nobody gives a shit. But like watching
- 18:35Speaker 1: those is so fun because everything's on the up and up.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Nobody's going to make any sleazy comments because they're dumb kids.
- 18:41Speaker 1: But even kids would make that. But they also are
- 18:43Speaker 1: being produced by a network. So like they've got someone
- 18:46Speaker 1: like they're under the thumb of some producer somewhere. They
- 18:50Speaker 1: have no freedom to say anything. So also the worst scenario,
- 18:54Speaker 1: but in a way it's just refreshing because it's so
- 18:56Speaker 1: opposite of everything going on in the world.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Right. To get, to get, uh, sober journalism, you got
- 19:02Speaker 3: to go to an eight year old.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Go to some like tween and they're up there
- 19:07Speaker 1: like wearing a tie that someone put a tie for them.
- 19:10Speaker 1: And you're like, let me read my lines and set
- 19:12Speaker 1: up this next segment. That's been very well produced.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Right. I don't know.
- 19:17Speaker 1: It's a nice refreshing change every once in a while
- 19:20Speaker 1: to watch some where they're setting up a thing about
- 19:22Speaker 1: a science experiment that is getting well funded. And like,
- 19:26Speaker 1: this is, This is all very nice. I don't feel
- 19:29Speaker 1: like I need to go hose down after watching this.
- 19:32Speaker 3: That's right. Did you have Kids Beat as a kid?
- 19:36Speaker 3: Was that a show that was syndicated in your area?
- 19:39Speaker 1: Again, I know the title. We definitely had some variation
- 19:42Speaker 1: of it. I can't remember if it was the same version.
- 19:44Speaker 1: But yeah, that's the thing. that didn't used to be
- 19:46Speaker 1: that unusual. Now it's just weird that there's a handful
- 19:49Speaker 1: still trying to do that out there.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Right why would why would these kids want to do
- 19:54Speaker 3: that when they could just like open up a box
- 19:56Speaker 3: on youtube and have like a million hits and you
- 19:58Speaker 3: have a real following.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Well that's the thing like schools started doing that like
- 20:02Speaker 1: i missed that window but i mean schools had their
- 20:05Speaker 1: own channel and had dumb kids that were in class
- 20:07Speaker 1: with you go sit in the office and read stuff
- 20:09Speaker 1: to people so like right again that that already came
- 20:12Speaker 1: and went too probably i don't even know what kids
- 20:14Speaker 1: are doing now but like Yeah, that's my favorite is
- 20:17Speaker 1: I get a glimpse of that in the Spider-Man movies.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Those kids doing their news report. I'm just like, man,
- 20:23Speaker 1: I would watch this news every day. These kids don't
- 20:25Speaker 1: know what they're doing. They're messing up their lines. I'm like,
- 20:27Speaker 1: this is fun.
- 20:28Speaker 3: Well, my kid is in, I got two kids in
- 20:33Speaker 3: middle school and they have, what is it? Well, no,
- 20:36Speaker 3: they just have like special CNN segments made for school.
- 20:42Speaker 3: And those guys, so it's kind of like, you know,
- 20:45Speaker 3: I guess they filter out the... I don't know what
- 20:47Speaker 3: it is. It was just geared towards kids. But those
- 20:50Speaker 3: CNN reporters on the show, they're like rock stars to
- 20:54Speaker 3: these kids.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Because every kid in the world knows them, yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so they did like a tour
- 21:01Speaker 3: of CNN Center as a field trip. And when the
- 21:06Speaker 3: guy who hosts the show came down to meet them,
- 21:10Speaker 3: I mean, they nearly tore him apart. It was like...
- 21:13Speaker 3: It was like Elvis, you know? Yeah, but as a newscaster,
- 21:18Speaker 3: it would be like, you know, I don't know. The
- 21:21Speaker 3: greatest newscasting story was, I lived in Wilmington for like
- 21:25Speaker 3: a year. And during that year, there was the guy,
- 21:30Speaker 3: the local news in Wilmington was, was the funniest comedy
- 21:35Speaker 3: on television. All right. And it kind of, it was
- 21:37Speaker 3: just like people knocking into cameras and that we, we
- 21:40Speaker 3: still joke about, all right, now we're going to go live.
- 21:44Speaker 3: And it's like, we're going to remote in life. It
- 21:47Speaker 3: would be live from the newsroom. So they would go
- 21:51Speaker 3: remote live from down the hall to the guy just
- 21:55Speaker 3: by his typewriter. So not, not like, like in Atlanta, it's,
- 22:00Speaker 3: it doesn't matter. We're outside city hall, you know, it's
- 22:03Speaker 3: 11 o'clock at night. This happened like five, six hours ago,
- 22:07Speaker 3: but I've got to stand here at 11 o'clock at
- 22:09Speaker 3: night to like talk, uh, talk about it, because we
- 22:11Speaker 3: just have to have something to show.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I mean, there might be police tape behind them, but
- 22:16Speaker 1: it's all long.
- 22:16Speaker 5: Done and wrapped up. I'm always like, I feel bad
- 22:20Speaker 5: for those folks. You know, it's like, I got to
- 22:21Speaker 5: go out there. There's nothing happening. Anyway, we'll do something
- 22:25Speaker 5: behind you. Oh, my God.
- 22:29Speaker 3: We're going to get off this jag real quick here,
- 22:31Speaker 3: because talking about the local news, that is old people crap. Well.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think most movie podcasts also veer towards the, not
- 22:42Speaker 1: the younger kids anyway.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I just got to tell you real quick, working in
- 22:49Speaker 3: a coffee shop in Wilmington, the weatherman would come in.
- 22:53Speaker 3: All right. The weather, this is the same coffee shop
- 22:57Speaker 3: that I, I had to, declined Katie Holmes' credit card. Oh, wow.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Wait. This is a whole other story.
- 23:07Speaker 3: That's just in.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Anyway.
- 23:09Speaker 3: Why would she need it? Anyway, you know. So, but
- 23:16Speaker 3: the real story is the weatherman would come in and
- 23:23Speaker 3: he would sit there and he would wear this black
- 23:26Speaker 3: turtleneck And he would sit there and be reading his
- 23:30Speaker 3: book and drinking his espresso. And he was looking like
- 23:35Speaker 3: a philosopher. And he's sitting there and I got to
- 23:41Speaker 3: overhear his conversations about talking about how he used to
- 23:45Speaker 3: work in a bigger market, you know, and then, you know,
- 23:49Speaker 3: now he's had to like, you know, kind of reduce
- 23:52Speaker 3: himself to be working in the local little tiny market
- 23:57Speaker 3: and how he... Yeah, he used to work for the
- 23:59Speaker 3: Weather Channel. That was a big thing. I used to be.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Boom, the Weather Channel, the biggest show in town. And now,
- 24:07Speaker 3: look at me.
- 24:09Speaker 1: That's one of those things I never quite understood how
- 24:12Speaker 1: it worked. Because it was just the weather channel all day.
- 24:17Speaker 1: That was it. That was all that was on there. Later,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I guess they started trying to produce shows and put
- 24:22Speaker 1: stuff in between. But to me, that also defeated the
- 24:25Speaker 1: purpose because the point was you could turn it to
- 24:27Speaker 1: that and see what the weather was. But you can't
- 24:29Speaker 1: do that if you're half an hour into a documentary
- 24:31Speaker 1: about tornadoes.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Right, right. The top 50 most dangerous tornadoes.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Hey, we had number three, I think.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Yeah oh in louisville we.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Uh we were part well it was like a tri-state
- 24:47Speaker 1: it swept through that whole part of the country and
- 24:49Speaker 1: like just devastated people it was pretty cool yeah like
- 24:53Speaker 1: a lot.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Of dead people right right if you like destroyed lives
- 24:57Speaker 3: I just like.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Being towards the top of the list though. I mean,
- 24:59Speaker 1: I'd like to know that thing that ruined our town
- 25:01Speaker 1: was at least a big.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Deal, you know? Yeah. Yeah. You got the bronze. You
- 25:05Speaker 3: got the bronze. That's good.
- 25:06Speaker 1: It was pretty high up there.
- 25:07Speaker 3: That was good to know. That was good. That was good.
- 25:09Speaker 1: But yeah, I used to know this guy that like,
- 25:11Speaker 1: I knew him and his wife and his wife would
- 25:14Speaker 1: always be complaining. She's like, that is all he watches.
- 25:18Speaker 1: He turns it on the weather channel and he leaves
- 25:21Speaker 1: it there. And I would pass by it and stop.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And it would just be like that horrible, like easy
- 25:26Speaker 1: jazz playing in the background. Four different shots of a
- 25:30Speaker 1: sun at the top with different cloud coverage. And like,
- 25:34Speaker 1: it just sat there like that for, I'm like, how
- 25:36Speaker 1: can he just leave? Is it like white noise? What
- 25:39Speaker 1: is he doing? I never quite understood that mindset.
- 25:43Speaker 3: There is a signal. I was exactly like you, Brian.
- 25:49Speaker 3: There is a signal, though. There is a signal. There
- 25:53Speaker 3: is a signal underneath the signal in weather channels that
- 26:00Speaker 3: do lull you into some kind of weird subconscious you know, warm,
- 26:08Speaker 3: you know, kind of like altered state. You know, if
- 26:11Speaker 3: you watch it long enough, you do turn into a
- 26:12Speaker 3: monkey and start.
- 26:14Speaker 1: I was thinking more of zombie as you were describing
- 26:17Speaker 1: that there's a zombie state that kicks into your brain,
- 26:20Speaker 1: maybe more of like the old school, like voodoo version,
- 26:23Speaker 1: but yeah, that's, that's kind of what I was thinking.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I was talking about the, you know, the William Hurt
- 26:28Speaker 3: altered state, you know, you just, you just go so
- 26:31Speaker 3: low into your subconscious, you just de-evolve into a puddle
- 26:34Speaker 3: of booze, you know? But, but yeah, like there is
- 26:38Speaker 3: something there and, you know, I was like going, Holy crap.
- 26:40Speaker 3: You know, this was a, it's kind of like the
- 26:44Speaker 3: same effect i don't want i had to stop it
- 26:46Speaker 3: because i'm going like okay i'm not quite ready to
- 26:48Speaker 3: watch a marathon of uh weather i kind of a
- 26:51Speaker 3: more of a weather nation man that's sad okay whatever
- 26:54Speaker 3: moving on um but uh but uh it's a sickness
- 26:59Speaker 3: it's a sickness and you and but it's kind of
- 27:02Speaker 3: like that show how it how it how is it
- 27:04Speaker 3: made how this got made or how we make this
- 27:06Speaker 3: or how it's just like machinery going and and uh
- 27:12Speaker 3: and then like caps being put on bottles and i'm.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Fascinated by those like the ones that are just behind
- 27:18Speaker 1: the scenes of a factory i'm like oh yeah oh
- 27:21Speaker 1: there's a machine that does that which is true of
- 27:23Speaker 1: everything there's always a machine that does whatever you're trying
- 27:26Speaker 1: to do oh yeah oh yeah those are.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Always fascinating Speaking of podcasts, there's the guy who does
- 27:32Speaker 3: the voice on How It's Made. He has his own podcast.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Of course he does. But if you just want to
- 27:38Speaker 3: hear him slowly explaining things, it's pretty good.
- 27:42Speaker 1: It does sound exciting. If caps being put on things
- 27:51Speaker 1: won you over, this is the show for you.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Let me tell you, this show is going to go
- 27:57Speaker 3: down as the most boring meltdown episode.
- 28:01Speaker 1: The hell you say well after this massive lead-in.
- 28:07Speaker 9: What's up and welcome to movie meltdown i'm brian i'm
- 28:15Speaker 9: coming to you live via the digital internet's crazy crossover
- 28:19Speaker 9: check-in segment that.
- 28:20Speaker 1: We're now living in hmm And live via digital recording
- 28:25Speaker 1: from the Oddity Studios. I'm only setting that up so
- 28:28Speaker 1: then I can ask you, where are you broadcasting from?
- 28:30Speaker 1: I make everybody else give themselves a dumb name. Last
- 28:32Speaker 1: time I didn't get to see your home base. Right, right.
- 28:36Speaker 1: What is your name, sir? And where is it that
- 28:38Speaker 1: you are broadcasting from right about now?
- 28:40Speaker 3: Okay. Can I identify myself as Sam this time?
- 28:45Speaker 1: I was going to ask if you were going to
- 28:48Speaker 1: change personalities on us. I mean, that was, I was
- 28:51Speaker 1: concerned the whole time we were talking last time that like, again,
- 28:54Speaker 1: a switch would be thrown and suddenly Sam would rear
- 28:57Speaker 1: his ugly head.
- 28:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Yeah. I feel, yeah, yeah.
- 29:01Speaker 1: The dark backward would happen and there you'd be like.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Yeah, we were going to, uh, we weren't talking to
- 29:07Speaker 3: Sam at the time when we, uh, last talked, but
- 29:11Speaker 3: Sam and I have made up since then. And, um,
- 29:14Speaker 3: I honestly thought Sam was dead.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Sometimes I fear for that other character, but all right.
- 29:24Speaker 3: But I think Sam, me and him and I are
- 29:26Speaker 3: talking again, so we're good. And so I'll be, I
- 29:30Speaker 3: identify as Sam this time, and I'm calling from, where
- 29:34Speaker 3: we are speaking from Sam drugs, bloodshed.
- 29:37Speaker 10: Ah, nice.
- 29:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 29:40Speaker 1: It's good to have a bloodshed.
- 29:41Speaker 3: It's good to have a bloodshed. So it's basically the
- 29:43Speaker 3: tool shed that I, uh, have, uh, uh, reclaimed and
- 29:49Speaker 3: cleaned out and, uh, have put up all my geeky
- 29:51Speaker 3: materials inside.
- 29:53Speaker 1: So, uh, as long as it's referred to as Outback, uh,
- 29:56Speaker 1: He's out back in the shed.
- 29:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 29:58Speaker 1: He's out there for hours. Right.
- 30:01Speaker 3: He's out back in the shed. That's right. That's right. So, yeah,
- 30:05Speaker 3: it's become my thing. You find when you get married
- 30:10Speaker 3: and you get three kids and then like they're... if
- 30:13Speaker 3: you ever want them to have friends, you can't really
- 30:15Speaker 3: have like all this crap all over your house.
- 30:20Speaker 1: No, you're not going to their house. No, their dad does. No,
- 30:24Speaker 1: thank you.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:26Speaker 3: So you go like, you know, in a certain point
- 30:28Speaker 3: where you're, you're, you're in the carpool and the, you're
- 30:32Speaker 3: the dad with the Friday the 13th three t-shirt on.
- 30:37Speaker 3: And you're like, Oh, I get it. I get it.
- 30:40Speaker 3: That's why that's, that's, we're freaking out the straights now. So,
- 30:45Speaker 3: you know, we got to, I mean, there's.
- 30:46Speaker 1: More of us than there used to be, as we mentioned,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but yeah, there's still plenty of straight laced people out
- 30:51Speaker 1: there to be creeped out by us. So I get it.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yeah. They're just, I would just say, I would just
- 30:57Speaker 3: say they're, they're respectful about other people's boundaries. And you know, when,
- 31:03Speaker 3: when some people like us, we don't, we don't understand
- 31:06Speaker 3: social cues and boundaries.
- 31:10Speaker 1: This is why I was shoved to a basement. I
- 31:12Speaker 1: didn't get my own shed. I just be gone to
- 31:15Speaker 1: the basement.
- 31:16Speaker 3: Yeah. The underworld. There we go. There we go.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Belly of society.
- 31:23Speaker 3: There we go. I like it. I like it. That's
- 31:25Speaker 3: where we belong in the margins.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So we were, yeah, we were, we were discussing this recently.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I was like, You mentioned, if you haven't followed along
- 31:40Speaker 1: from this previous episode of us yammering on, you've been
- 31:43Speaker 1: with the show for quite a while as a listener,
- 31:46Speaker 1: and then you got roped in on my recent road trip,
- 31:49Speaker 1: I mean, like a year ago.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Into joining in.
- 31:53Speaker 1: So, yeah, I was.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Rarely can I share space with you. It only happened
- 32:00Speaker 1: once in our lives. So I was like, uh, well,
- 32:03Speaker 1: I mean, I don't normally do them this way, but
- 32:06Speaker 1: this is a good time that we could have, we
- 32:09Speaker 1: could use this as an excuse to sit and talk
- 32:11Speaker 1: on the, uh, the internet. So it led to this episode.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:17Speaker 3: No, this is really, uh, yeah, I would, I would have,
- 32:20Speaker 3: I would never have ever, ever imposed, uh, on your show.
- 32:26Speaker 3: And I like that. I like that, that level of separation.
- 32:31Speaker 3: you know, and everything where, you know, you are doing
- 32:33Speaker 3: your thing and, and I, I appreciate it, you know, and, uh,
- 32:38Speaker 3: you know, the artist and the, the, the, the, what
- 32:42Speaker 3: is it? Professional appreciator from a high fidelity. What was that?
- 32:48Speaker 3: I'm a professional appreciator.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I don't even put up those, those, and not even
- 32:54Speaker 1: walls like velvet ropes. I don't even bother putting those up.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I'm just like, eh, come over here where I'm at.
- 32:59Speaker 1: I don't care.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Let's just sit here and talk about stuff.
- 33:02Speaker 3: So, right, right. But I always, I was always like,
- 33:04Speaker 3: you know, Brian, he's like, it's got to be, you know,
- 33:09Speaker 3: you rarely did you do anything remotely and you know,
- 33:11Speaker 3: it was like, I mean like, you know, over the
- 33:14Speaker 3: phone or.
- 33:15Speaker 1: That, that kind of remote. I was always out in
- 33:16Speaker 1: the world doing nonsense, but I was usually sitting with
- 33:21Speaker 1: the people I was talking to.
- 33:22Speaker 3: That's right. In their space. And, um, and, um, breathing
- 33:27Speaker 3: the same air and stuff. And so, you know, a
- 33:30Speaker 3: sense of immediacy. And that's what I always appreciated the show.
- 33:35Speaker 3: But I mean, also, I guess I just have I
- 33:38Speaker 3: just thought that, you know, when you started the show,
- 33:44Speaker 3: whatever the technology was back in the day.
- 33:46Speaker 1: That was pretty much it. Tin cans and string.
- 33:50Speaker 3: You know, and everything like the bird on the wax cylinder,
- 33:54Speaker 3: you know, whatever Flintstone technology we had. Back then in,
- 33:59Speaker 3: you know, 2005.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Watson, come here.
- 34:01Speaker 3: I need you. Or like, Millie, take a note. Diane,
- 34:05Speaker 3: I'm coming to you from a convention. There's a lot
- 34:07Speaker 3: of weirdos around me.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Sometimes I feel like that as I'm talking to myself
- 34:17Speaker 1: recording you.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Know oh yeah yeah yeah those are the best episodes
- 34:20Speaker 3: it's just you and Misty talking shit about people walking
- 34:22Speaker 3: by that's a lot of episodes always makes my day
- 34:26Speaker 3: always makes my day um but so no I get
- 34:30Speaker 3: that at the time you know and everything to get
- 34:33Speaker 3: a decent sound recording you had to be in the
- 34:37Speaker 3: person's space with the mic and everything and so it's amazing.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I still kind of make that argument.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah sure sure sure to some extent.
- 34:45Speaker 1: And even, even now in the same space, I'm not
- 34:48Speaker 1: happy with the sound. So yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. My
- 34:50Speaker 1: place more than most I'm annoyed with, but I can't,
- 34:53Speaker 1: I've tried. So like recently I bought some new stuff
- 34:57Speaker 1: that I couldn't afford. I did an entire sound test
- 35:01Speaker 1: and then sat down afterwards to be like, okay, this
- 35:03Speaker 1: is going to fix that problem that I may be
- 35:05Speaker 1: the only one, but I assume other people are annoyed
- 35:07Speaker 1: by my sound. And I'm just like, I went back
- 35:10Speaker 1: and listened to it. I'm like, damn it. It still
- 35:12Speaker 1: doesn't fix the problem. Like, I'm constantly fighting with sound issues.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I don't think they're in my head. I think they're
- 35:19Speaker 1: all real. And sound is a battle, let me tell you.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Yeah, no, it is. It is. I know just from
- 35:27Speaker 3: some experiences I've had, it's just sound is like the
- 35:32Speaker 3: unspoken demon that haunts every project. And the sound on
- 35:39Speaker 3: Moving Meltdown is always really very nice. And I've heard
- 35:42Speaker 3: it evolve over the years. And I'll probably, I'll ask
- 35:46Speaker 3: you offline, you know, what your editing process is, you know.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Oh, the editing's even more ridiculous. And a reason that
- 35:57Speaker 1: I think mine is, I definitely set up different and
- 36:00Speaker 1: like the schedule has become different because I spend so
- 36:04Speaker 1: much more time after the fact than other people do.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And I, I don't, and some of them will sound okay.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't understand how you do that. Like,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I don't like, they'll be done and push stop on
- 36:15Speaker 1: the recorder. And then 10 minutes later it's up online.
- 36:18Speaker 1: And I'm just like, what, what, what? Like it doesn't
- 36:22Speaker 1: even process. I'm like, how, how can you do that?
- 36:24Speaker 1: How is that a thing?
- 36:25Speaker 3: Like, yeah. Yeah. Do you do like a, just real
- 36:29Speaker 3: quick do you do like notch filtering on like an
- 36:35Speaker 3: editor where you like filter out some frequencies and that
- 36:39Speaker 3: kind of thing I.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Definitely clean up the files that I learned early on
- 36:45Speaker 1: and learned the hard way and learned it wrong sometimes
- 36:48Speaker 1: and I can find again I can't most of the
- 36:52Speaker 1: time can't go back and listen to old ones. Cause
- 36:54Speaker 1: they'll drive me crazy. Cause like stuff I didn't know
- 36:57Speaker 1: then that I'm like, Oh, I could fix that now,
- 36:59Speaker 1: except I can't fix it now. If I could have
- 37:01Speaker 1: fixed it before I finished editing it, then like I
- 37:04Speaker 1: could have.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Yeah. It's crazy. You don't want to special edition it.
- 37:08Speaker 10: So, yeah, I've.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Considered that, though. I was like, well, you know, I
- 37:11Speaker 1: could and I could add a giant do back over
- 37:14Speaker 1: here that's behind us while we're talking.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. What was the what was the what
- 37:19Speaker 3: was the latest one? What took you or something? What
- 37:22Speaker 3: was the latest edition that made the Internet lose their shit?
- 37:28Speaker 3: or something like that i don't know is.
- 37:30Speaker 1: This the butthole cut wait a minute that's what we're
- 37:33Speaker 1: all waiting.
- 37:34Speaker 3: For the cat butthole cut.
- 37:36Speaker 1: That's what we're all looking for.
- 37:37Speaker 3: Really absolutely look mom i made it show this digitally
- 37:42Speaker 3: removing cat buttholes hey.
- 37:44Speaker 1: If you don't think that there's already somebody out there
- 37:47Speaker 1: with that fetish for um It's.
- 37:52Speaker 3: Like Jerry Bruckheimer is going like, I don't want a
- 37:58Speaker 3: screener unless you digitally added a butthole on their forehead.
- 38:02Speaker 1: Just saying, if you don't think somebody already has that
- 38:05Speaker 1: going on for Taylor Swift, you're wrong. I have a
- 38:09Speaker 1: whole internet to show you proof because I've run across
- 38:12Speaker 1: like I'm whatever with Taylor Swift, but I've run across
- 38:15Speaker 1: some deep holes of Taylor Swift stuff. Then I'm just like, oh, oh,
- 38:21Speaker 1: it's like, wow, you guys are not just into Taylor Swift.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Like there's an extra couple of levels down that you're
- 38:28Speaker 1: into or so.
- 38:30Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 38:31Speaker 3: With the power of Photoshop and everything, you know, it's
- 38:36Speaker 3: in deep fakes. Everything has just become like real weird.
- 38:39Speaker 3: I remember like the use of bad as it could
- 38:41Speaker 3: get was I had a friend in the 90s who
- 38:43Speaker 3: had a shrine in their house for Jewel. And that
- 38:48Speaker 3: was about as deep as your bag. That's about as
- 38:52Speaker 3: deep as you got.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I can get on board with that. I like Smeason Jewell.
- 38:55Speaker 1: I'm fine with that. Also, as a person who's had
- 38:57Speaker 1: a shrine in his house to.
- 38:58Speaker 3: Someone that I won't really go into, but there was...
- 39:06Speaker 3: hey i guess i i've had at my end times
- 39:10Speaker 3: i did have probably a little bit of a john
- 39:12Speaker 3: carpenter shrine going on you know and everything but i
- 39:15Speaker 3: mean you know i wouldn't say i prayed to it
- 39:18Speaker 3: i just sort of like communed with the spirit of
- 39:21Speaker 3: john carpenter i wouldn't call it like worshiping you know
- 39:25Speaker 3: i mean i wouldn't go that far yeah.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Mine started ironically like i was like wouldn't it be
- 39:30Speaker 1: ridiculous if I did this? And then I got so
- 39:33Speaker 1: into like the specifics of and then I'll have this
- 39:35Speaker 1: and I'll set this up. And then I'm like, you know,
- 39:37Speaker 1: it's a fine line now because I'm just making a
- 39:39Speaker 1: shrine to someone. Whatever the reason, you're still standing in
- 39:45Speaker 1: front of a shrine, weirdo.
- 39:46Speaker 2: I get it.
- 39:48Speaker 3: No, people don't. It's the specifics. What you just said
- 39:52Speaker 3: was very key to it. It is getting into the
- 39:55Speaker 3: specifics of something, which is really the whole... freaking freeing
- 40:00Speaker 3: point of it like with uh you know with the
- 40:02Speaker 3: podcast and you obsessing over the sound the sounds always
- 40:05Speaker 3: sounded good but i you probably spend those extra three
- 40:08Speaker 3: weeks on it you know just because that's getting into
- 40:12Speaker 3: the specifics i know these things because i see them
- 40:16Speaker 3: because i have these this sickness and um you know
- 40:20Speaker 3: that uh getting into just getting into the granular levels of, of,
- 40:26Speaker 3: of production is just, it almost just makes the cruel
- 40:32Speaker 3: and inhuman world outside, you know, livable, you know? And so,
- 40:37Speaker 3: you know, And that's.
- 40:40Speaker 1: What we're looking for. Like, I think we, we all
- 40:42Speaker 1: kind of come to that and it's, it's weird that
- 40:44Speaker 1: we pick our own versions. Cause like the fact that
- 40:47Speaker 1: you latched onto this show is like awesome. And I
- 40:50Speaker 1: didn't ever expect anybody to care. but like, it's the
- 40:53Speaker 1: same thing. Like we're plenty of other people want nothing
- 40:56Speaker 1: to do with this, which I fully understand, but like
- 40:59Speaker 1: they find their own thing. Like I know there's other
- 41:01Speaker 1: people and I'll, they'll be talking sometimes about something and
- 41:03Speaker 1: I'll be like, Oh wait, that, no, that's their thing.
- 41:06Speaker 1: Like that's their version of what I do. Only it's about,
- 41:09Speaker 1: I don't know, like raising horses or something, you know,
- 41:12Speaker 1: it's like, it's about working on the car in the garage.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Like they've all got a variation of whatever they're into
- 41:18Speaker 1: that's equal. And you know, just as, comforting and or
- 41:22Speaker 1: maddening depending on the day and like yeah so we
- 41:24Speaker 1: all kind of have that it's just finding that and
- 41:27Speaker 1: occasionally it's nice when you find other people that share
- 41:30Speaker 1: your weird thing that's.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Right right the same the same obsession yeah talk about
- 41:35Speaker 3: cars computers guns uh i think i think guys and
- 41:40Speaker 3: well everybody's got their own thing toys um uh just
- 41:45Speaker 3: getting into that that that tech stuff tile you know
- 41:50Speaker 3: click clack legos brian hey i.
- 41:53Speaker 9: Don't i don't know what you're talking about i don't
- 41:55Speaker 9: i don't.
- 41:56Speaker 1: I might have created a new cyborg creature that i
- 42:00Speaker 1: i might send you a picture of later but anyway
- 42:03Speaker 1: i don't know what you're talking about i've not not no.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Yeah yeah difference between like a drawing on a computer
- 42:09Speaker 3: versus drawing on a pencil the uh a texture uh
- 42:13Speaker 3: type thing um or or like if you're drawing on
- 42:16Speaker 3: the computer the the the clicks where you know everybody
- 42:21Speaker 3: that that that falling into the the the five the
- 42:25Speaker 3: the spaces between the spaces on this stuff um is
- 42:29Speaker 3: really what what uh makes life great.
- 42:34Speaker 1: And it's a and it's a variation because i like
- 42:37Speaker 1: that with with everybody over the years. It's like, especially
- 42:40Speaker 1: like talking to artists, that is always my thing. I'm like,
- 42:43Speaker 1: cause I started so long ago that like computer art
- 42:46Speaker 1: was like not really an effective way to do things.
- 42:51Speaker 1: But as time's gone on and I talk to people now,
- 42:54Speaker 1: it's like, there's so many people that that's 90 to
- 42:56Speaker 1: a hundred percent of how they do the stuff. So
- 42:58Speaker 1: it's like that version plus same thing with film. It's
- 43:02Speaker 1: just like when, when you go back and you look
- 43:05Speaker 1: at stuff that was all practical effects and then you
- 43:07Speaker 1: see them latch onto this new CGA technology and nobody
- 43:11Speaker 1: knows how to use it. And it looks like garbage.
- 43:13Speaker 1: And then you see, you jump ahead another 10, 15
- 43:16Speaker 1: years and you're like, Oh no, it's not garbage. It's just,
- 43:19Speaker 1: you need to figure out how to use it. The
- 43:21Speaker 1: technology needs to catch up to what we want it
- 43:23Speaker 1: to be like all of those things gel. And then
- 43:26Speaker 1: you're like, Oh no, this looks really good now. So yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 3: It's yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Finding people that know how to use all this, this
- 43:33Speaker 1: sort of stuff and the, the fine details to whatever
- 43:36Speaker 1: art you're into.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's cool. It's cool. You talk
- 43:41Speaker 3: about computers. I saw, uh, uh, try to move it
- 43:46Speaker 3: around to a movie. Uh, I thought, I was just thinking, uh, uh, uh,
- 43:52Speaker 3: scattered thoughts here. You know, I was thinking about the, uh, the, uh, whatchamacallit, the, uh,
- 43:58Speaker 3: candy bars. Candy bars, candy bars. I was thinking about,
- 44:03Speaker 3: thinking about the, when the computer generated stuff was coming out,
- 44:07Speaker 3: there was, you know, if there was like five seconds
- 44:11Speaker 3: of computer generated imagery, that would go into the trailer
- 44:15Speaker 3: and they would sell that movie, you know, as being
- 44:18Speaker 3: like the spec, The spectacle are like, oh, look, this
- 44:20Speaker 3: movie is going to have CG images. It's kind of
- 44:23Speaker 3: like Lawnmower Man. There's like five minutes of CG or Tron.
- 44:27Speaker 3: You know, there's like three minutes of actual.
- 44:29Speaker 1: We go into the computer, man. And there's zooming shots
- 44:35Speaker 1: of a grid. So, you know, we're in the.
- 44:37Speaker 3: Computer trying to get my kids to watch Tron. has
- 44:41Speaker 3: become my life purpose.
- 44:44Speaker 6: This is original not legacy right oh oh yeah yeah
- 44:48Speaker 6: dude you know come on come on there is one
- 44:52Speaker 6: tron i would say if you can separate out the
- 44:57Speaker 6: light cycle sequence from the neutron and just watch that
- 45:00Speaker 6: as a.
- 45:01Speaker 3: Short film great but you know you can't you can't
- 45:04Speaker 3: no You don't.
- 45:06Speaker 1: You don't notice.
- 45:07Speaker 3: That's the thing.
- 45:08Speaker 1: When you grow up with it, you don't even notice
- 45:10Speaker 1: that stuff because you're immersed in it. It's also, it's,
- 45:13Speaker 1: it is cutting edge technology. So you're kind of impressed
- 45:16Speaker 1: by whatever's coming along. Cause you haven't seen it before.
- 45:19Speaker 1: See the one that made me think of like, realize
- 45:21Speaker 1: that is cause I grew up for several reasons, loving
- 45:26Speaker 1: the last star fighter. I know, you know, one of them,
- 45:28Speaker 1: I won't go into her, but, but that aside, I
- 45:31Speaker 1: love the movie. Like, I think it's a great movie.
- 45:33Speaker 1: And it was like, maybe, maybe when I sat down
- 45:36Speaker 1: to talk to Catherine Mary Stewart, I was like, Oh yeah,
- 45:38Speaker 1: I should go back and watch this. And I went
- 45:39Speaker 1: back and went, Oh, this animation is like, it is
- 45:44Speaker 1: full on animation. Like it was pre CG. So they
- 45:48Speaker 1: really were, I mean, it is using computers. Cause then
- 45:51Speaker 1: I went back and like talked to somebody who worked
- 45:53Speaker 1: on it. And like, it was like straddling that line.
- 45:56Speaker 1: It's one of the first movies that they were like, okay,
- 45:59Speaker 1: we're going to, We're going to take this concept that
- 46:02Speaker 1: we've drawn up here. We're going to use this computer
- 46:04Speaker 1: and map everything out. And so it's the very first
- 46:07Speaker 1: time they start trying to meld these things into some
- 46:10Speaker 1: new art form. And you see, it is not like
- 46:15Speaker 1: they're fooling the eye when you go back and watch
- 46:17Speaker 1: it now. But it never occurred to me as a kid.
- 46:21Speaker 1: I watched that a million times. And that was the
- 46:24Speaker 1: spaceship flying through space. And that's what it looked like.
- 46:27Speaker 1: And I didn't question it. And now, because I've seen
- 46:30Speaker 1: other versions... I'm just like, oh, okay.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I can see this is the early days of this.
- 46:36Speaker 1: This is, I'm figuring this stuff out, but yeah. And
- 46:39Speaker 1: when you're in it, you don't notice that kind of stuff,
- 46:42Speaker 1: but kids now I could see, watch that and be like,
- 46:44Speaker 1: what the hell am I watching?
- 46:47Speaker 3: Well, they're wrong. And so, you know, I mean, they're,
- 46:50Speaker 3: they are, I mean, perspective, like, right.
- 46:53Speaker 1: You should, you should understand why it looks like that
- 46:56Speaker 1: before you, you know, talk bad about it. That's, that's
- 46:58Speaker 1: what we kind of learned. I go back and look
- 47:00Speaker 1: at it now and I, get it i understand why
- 47:03Speaker 1: it's like that and i still appreciate what's going on
- 47:06Speaker 1: there and and i still love the story and i
- 47:08Speaker 1: still focus on the story and the characters and the
- 47:10Speaker 1: acting and like everything else is great you know.
- 47:13Speaker 3: No no kids who watch who play eight hours of
- 47:16Speaker 3: minecraft have no they they do not they do not
- 47:20Speaker 3: get a say.
- 47:21Speaker 1: That's my that's my thing when i finally when I
- 47:25Speaker 1: finally saw what Minecraft was, cause I, as previously mentioned,
- 47:28Speaker 1: I don't play games much. So like I heard about
- 47:31Speaker 1: it forever. I know at least the names of all
- 47:34Speaker 1: the games for the last umpteen years. I used to
- 47:36Speaker 1: work with video games. So like I knew every title,
- 47:39Speaker 1: I just didn't care. I didn't play them. But so
- 47:41Speaker 1: like once Minecraft started getting this huge following, I was like, eh, whatever.
- 47:45Speaker 1: And I finally like saw a shot from it. And
- 47:46Speaker 1: I'm like, the hell is this right did we.
- 47:49Speaker 3: Go back in time what happened and i'm like.
- 47:52Speaker 1: How are little jaded bastard kids now.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Not talking shit about right right what here's the thing
- 47:59Speaker 3: here's the thing it is terrible terrible looking but it
- 48:02Speaker 3: is basically uh virtual lego so you can't hate it
- 48:07Speaker 3: too much because i've seen.
- 48:11Speaker 1: The real lego projects.
- 48:12Speaker 3: I can yeah okay they can do.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Better yes Emmett has taught us. He has shown us
- 48:18Speaker 1: the way.
- 48:18Speaker 3: That's all you had to say. You've convinced me. I'm
- 48:23Speaker 3: not dying on this hill. But I do, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 3: I do like, yes. Okay. Yep. Not going to argue that.
- 48:32Speaker 3: All right. So, yeah, yeah. No, so you don't, I mean,
- 48:36Speaker 3: Last Starfighter is, you know, inequivably, you know, an American
- 48:41Speaker 3: classic film.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Right?
- 48:44Speaker 1: You're not joking as far as I'm concerned. I would
- 48:47Speaker 1: totally stand on that hill. I'll be waving a flag
- 48:50Speaker 1: right over here.
- 48:50Speaker 3: I mean, you just don't get a better scene in
- 48:55Speaker 3: a movie than when they say, like, what do we
- 48:57Speaker 3: do now? And then this little visor.
- 49:00Speaker 1: We die.
- 49:03Speaker 3: I love that.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Like, I think about that scene. Probably not a week
- 49:06Speaker 1: goes by that I don't think of, we die.
- 49:09Speaker 3: I mean, it just makes you want to stand up
- 49:11Speaker 3: and cheer right now, doesn't it? Just thinking about that scene.
- 49:14Speaker 3: you know it's so awesome yeah i didn't see it
- 49:17Speaker 3: in the theater but i would have lost my mind
- 49:20Speaker 3: had i seen it in the.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Theater and to this day like why i don't have
- 49:23Speaker 1: that cool little flip over eyepiece like i totally want
- 49:26Speaker 1: that like why it'll do why don't we have those
- 49:29Speaker 1: yet the.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Weird staff that extended a blade in the middle you
- 49:34Speaker 3: just go like man that guy's got he's got that
- 49:37Speaker 3: knife has knives on knives and it becomes a bigger knife.
- 49:40Speaker 1: I mean any blade that goes shing you know, it's awesome.
- 49:43Speaker 1: And it's going to murder somebody before the movie's over.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely. No, that movie is great because it also
- 49:48Speaker 3: like deals with like, you know, a kid from bad
- 49:53Speaker 3: side of the track, you know, kind of dealing with
- 49:55Speaker 3: what video people use video games for is like, You know,
- 49:59Speaker 3: video games are this alternate reality that you actually have
- 50:02Speaker 3: some sort of control over versus the uncontrollable world of,
- 50:08Speaker 3: you know, can he get into college? Can he do this?
- 50:10Speaker 3: Is he ever going to escape this crappy life?
- 50:13Speaker 1: And you see this this kid who's actually taking care
- 50:16Speaker 1: of everyone around him. Like he's not going to get
- 50:19Speaker 1: into college because he's busy fixing somebody else's broken shit
- 50:22Speaker 1: and taking care of his mom and take care of
- 50:23Speaker 1: his little brother. Like he's, he's raising an entire trailer
- 50:27Speaker 1: park essentially because he's the responsible one. And because of that,
- 50:31Speaker 1: he's going to pay the price and he's not going
- 50:33Speaker 1: to end up going to college. And he's going to,
- 50:35Speaker 1: so like it, I think legitimately is a really great
- 50:38Speaker 1: story at the center of all this.
- 50:40Speaker 3: Right. They don't make people like that in teenage movies
- 50:44Speaker 3: or kid movies anymore. That's just, Or if they do,
- 50:48Speaker 3: I'm just not thinking of it right now, but I'm
- 50:50Speaker 3: going like, you know, this conversation, you just go like, wow,
- 50:54Speaker 3: that doesn't show up in movies nowadays. You know, we
- 50:57Speaker 3: want to believe that there isn't like this, you know,
- 51:02Speaker 3: you know, we're all on this level playing field when
- 51:04Speaker 3: we're not.
- 51:05Speaker 7: And.
- 51:08Speaker 1: You're just saying that because we're both from the wrong
- 51:10Speaker 1: side of the tracks.
- 51:10Speaker 3: That's right. Underbelly. Marginal.
- 51:13Speaker 1: You're living in a shed.
- 51:14Speaker 3: What do you know? Must be nice to have a shed.
- 51:20Speaker 1: I'm just in this ditch over here. I have to
- 51:23Speaker 1: crawl into the.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Sewer tube just to get out of the rain. You
- 51:29Speaker 3: got a sewer tube. Must be nice.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Keeps the rain off me. I do what I can.
- 51:35Speaker 3: Look at you and your sewer tube.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:39Speaker 3: Nice. Um, well, okay. So yes, the, the graphics on Starfighter,
- 51:45Speaker 3: you know, I remember watching them going like, Oh, it's
- 51:48Speaker 3: kind of like a cartoon. Interesting that they did it
- 51:50Speaker 3: that way. You know, as a kid, just go like,
- 51:51Speaker 3: why don't they have models? I don't understand.
- 51:54Speaker 1: I think I even acknowledged it was like, Oh, this
- 51:57Speaker 1: is done with computers. It makes it like futuristic. Like
- 52:00Speaker 1: it kind of fit what they were, you know, going
- 52:02Speaker 1: for with this. futuristic society that shows up and takes
- 52:06Speaker 1: them into space so like i don't know we were
- 52:08Speaker 1: we were the kids getting swept up into that world
- 52:10Speaker 1: like i yeah it worked for me that first time
- 52:13Speaker 1: i saw it and the hundred times after.
- 52:15Speaker 3: That right right right right and then you go like
- 52:18Speaker 3: nowadays you you think okay had they done it with
- 52:21Speaker 3: models how the hell would they have done that last
- 52:24Speaker 3: scene with the thing spinning.
- 52:26Speaker 1: Around and death blossom it's the death blossom the.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Death blossom They could have done that. You know, you
- 52:31Speaker 3: got that shot from Return of the Jedi where they
- 52:34Speaker 3: have all the shoots blowing by you and it's like
- 52:37Speaker 3: the most amazing practical effect shot you've ever seen in
- 52:40Speaker 3: your life, you know?
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:41Speaker 3: And it's like three seconds long and it took them
- 52:43Speaker 3: like a year and a half to make.
- 52:46Speaker 1: And worth every second of it, yeah.
- 52:48Speaker 3: You can see these guys like, you know, shoelace over here.
- 52:51Speaker 1: You know?
- 52:52Speaker 3: You know, whatever, you know?
- 52:55Speaker 5: So, I mean.
- 52:57Speaker 3: the, the computer generated allowed them to do that ending.
- 53:00Speaker 3: And when you're a kid, you're watching it, you're going like,
- 53:02Speaker 3: that's the best thing I've ever seen in my life,
- 53:04Speaker 3: you know? And, um, they could have done that. Yeah.
- 53:07Speaker 3: It would have been, they would have had to scale
- 53:09Speaker 3: that back, you know?
- 53:10Speaker 1: So, um, it still looks really cool. Like whether you
- 53:14Speaker 1: can see it's a weird computer image or not, like
- 53:16Speaker 1: it's still a cool concept. It does mean you can't
- 53:20Speaker 1: have any friends in space, essentially. Even as a kid,
- 53:23Speaker 1: I was like, well, you can't really use that if
- 53:25Speaker 1: there's other ships that are your friends around you.
- 53:28Speaker 3: This is a last-ditch effort. You have to be the
- 53:32Speaker 3: last starfighter.
- 53:33Speaker 1: You are last man standing in space.
- 53:36Speaker 3: Did they say that this ship was the only one
- 53:40Speaker 3: equipped with that amazing death blossom? I mean, I can't remember.
- 53:45Speaker 3: I don't remember.
- 53:46Speaker 7: But.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Either way, it's a good thing it had it because
- 53:49Speaker 1: it was the last ship standing.
- 53:51Speaker 3: Absolutely. And that guy, Lance Guest, he did the infamous
- 54:01Speaker 3: Jaws 4.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Which we discussed. He was very cool, by the way.
- 54:09Speaker 1: I was thrilled to have... And again, trying to find...
- 54:14Speaker 1: Cause I think it's hit with so much of the
- 54:16Speaker 1: same stuff over and over. So I'm sure at every
- 54:19Speaker 1: convention they've been like, dude, I grew up watching last
- 54:21Speaker 1: star fighter. You're awesome. But like the fact that we
- 54:25Speaker 1: got into this entire episode of like how much of
- 54:29Speaker 1: a music fan he is and how like the whole
- 54:31Speaker 1: like second half of his life has been around music.
- 54:34Speaker 1: And like, he's been part of a, like a Broadway
- 54:37Speaker 1: show essentially built around old school rock and roll, you know?
- 54:40Speaker 1: So it's like, he is like music. Through and through,
- 54:44Speaker 1: but how often does he get to talk about that
- 54:46Speaker 1: when he goes to conventions and is sitting there in
- 54:49Speaker 1: front of a big banner that says Last Starfighter on it?
- 54:53Speaker 1: He was really cool, and I kind of love hearing
- 54:55Speaker 1: other people. They have so many other facets to them.
- 54:59Speaker 1: I like hearing how geeky they are about other things
- 55:02Speaker 1: that they don't always get to talk about.
- 55:04Speaker 3: Well, I mean, Last Starfighter was what, like six weeks
- 55:06Speaker 3: of his life, you know, back in 1984. You know,
- 55:09Speaker 3: he's had to like keep making paychecks since then, you know. So,
- 55:12Speaker 3: you know, yeah, they go to the theater. I had
- 55:15Speaker 3: totally forgotten that you had interviewed Lance Guest and that
- 55:19Speaker 3: now he just came back to me. So, yeah, that's
- 55:21Speaker 3: pretty cool. I had just seen him in a movie
- 55:25Speaker 3: about werewolves and in an old age community. That was
- 55:28Speaker 3: really good. Nice.
- 55:30Speaker 1: I have to find this.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. It's called Late Phases. Okay. Okay.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I've heard that title.
- 55:36Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Check it out. It's pretty damn good. It's
- 55:39Speaker 3: also got Ginger from Gilligan's Isle on it.
- 55:47Speaker 1: I'm not as thrilled with her. I'm a Marianne man.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 55:50Speaker 3: Okay. Yeah.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:51Speaker 3: So, yeah. Yeah. She's definitely not the one.
- 55:54Speaker 1: I have seen Ginger in the real world, mind you.
- 55:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I remember that episode. Yeah, she was real positive.
- 56:01Speaker 1: No, Marianne was. I've seen both of them now. I've
- 56:06Speaker 1: talked to Marianne. She was super cool. Ginger, I saw
- 56:10Speaker 1: she was doing, this was, I'm assuming, right, at least
- 56:13Speaker 1: before the show. So this had to be like 12,
- 56:15Speaker 1: 15 years ago. She was doing a book tour. I'm
- 56:20Speaker 1: almost using air quotes because, I mean, technically it was
- 56:23Speaker 1: a book. She was holding it. But it was a
- 56:26Speaker 1: kid's book. And I mean, who am I to judge
- 56:32Speaker 1: any author? But it had barely a sentence on each page.
- 56:38Speaker 1: And the coolest part about it, I guess, was the
- 56:41Speaker 1: artwork that went with it. She didn't do that. She
- 56:44Speaker 1: brought in a really talented artist. And I was just
- 56:47Speaker 1: sitting here watching her pitch this in this bookstore as
- 56:50Speaker 1: she came around. And I was just like, what? the
- 56:53Speaker 1: hell is going on here like this is barely even
- 56:56Speaker 1: any writing right and she was in her usual fashion
- 57:00Speaker 1: super snobby about everything because she would not like you
- 57:04Speaker 1: could not bring up that show at all she's here
- 57:06Speaker 1: for the book which i get i understand you're here
- 57:09Speaker 1: to sign the book whatever but still like she's always
- 57:12Speaker 1: had that weird chip on her shoulder about it that's
- 57:14Speaker 1: got on my nose so.
- 57:15Speaker 3: Yeah yeah yeah i'm too good but i'll.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Still you know i'll watch her in a movie i'm
- 57:19Speaker 1: not hardcore about it so Okay.
- 57:21Speaker 3: So no late phases. It's real good. It's a, it's
- 57:24Speaker 3: a different kind of, you know, it's, it's about a
- 57:26Speaker 3: thing they don't usually make movies about.
- 57:28Speaker 1: It's about, uh, old people, old people, you know, this
- 57:32Speaker 1: movie and cocoon. That's all they got.
- 57:34Speaker 3: That's it. That's all they got. That's all they got.
- 57:36Speaker 1: So he's not included. Wait a minute.
- 57:40Speaker 3: I'm a big fan oh okay yeah it's actually a
- 57:42Speaker 3: subgenre yeah uh old people right well i mean but
- 57:47Speaker 3: see you know that's all in the 80s you know
- 57:48Speaker 3: since like hugh cronin and jessica candy like checked out
- 57:51Speaker 3: you know there just haven't been a thing for that
- 57:54Speaker 3: they were they were.
- 57:55Speaker 1: Toeing the line on that one and now we don't
- 57:56Speaker 1: have anybody that's right wilford brimley can only hang on
- 57:59Speaker 1: so long man.
- 58:00Speaker 3: Can only do so much you know exactly it's all
- 58:03Speaker 3: on Brimley. And he's got the, was it the diabetes,
- 58:06Speaker 3: the diabetes, the diabetes, right. That's right. It slows you down,
- 58:12Speaker 3: slows you down. So, um, yeah, late phases werewolf movie.
- 58:16Speaker 3: I can't remember how good the werewolf is in it.
- 58:18Speaker 3: You know, I don't remember if it's a, you know,
- 58:20Speaker 3: it looks like a guy in a bear suit or not, but, uh, yeah, yeah. The, uh,
- 58:25Speaker 3: it's pretty, pretty darn good. And, but it's got Lance
- 58:27Speaker 3: guest in it. And, um, uh, he's, he's like a
- 58:30Speaker 3: guy who helps around the, uh, the community. It's like a, uh,
- 58:34Speaker 3: it's not like a building. It's like, they all have
- 58:35Speaker 3: like their own, like personal living spaces, you know, little
- 58:38Speaker 3: living houses. Uh, it's like a village, you know.
- 58:40Speaker 1: That's a better way. Yeah. I would want my own
- 58:43Speaker 1: space or when I become the old person in five years.
- 58:47Speaker 3: Right.
- 58:48Speaker 1: I want my own space.
- 58:49Speaker 3: I mean, right. Yeah. No kidding. And so, so this
- 58:52Speaker 3: is good. This guy, uh, uh, begrudgingly takes his, uh,
- 58:57Speaker 3: kids of ice and moves into this place and he's
- 58:59Speaker 3: like an ex cop. And, um, It's the guy, I
- 59:03Speaker 3: think his name is like, I'm going to mangle his name.
- 59:06Speaker 3: We're just going to say, I'm going to say it.
- 59:07Speaker 3: Nick Mancucci. is not his name. But he's the guy
- 59:14Speaker 3: from Stakeland and the guy from.
- 59:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, like the Mr.
- 59:19Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 59:21Speaker 1: I was going to say, there's only like one grown
- 59:22Speaker 1: up character that's in and throughout Snake Land.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Right.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Everybody else just dies along the way.
- 59:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 59:29Speaker 3: Yeah. And did you his other movie he did with
- 59:31Speaker 3: that director called Mulberry Drive about rat people?
- 59:38Speaker 1: Of course it is.
- 59:39Speaker 3: Of course it is. Mulberry Drive. I hope I got
- 59:43Speaker 3: that name of that right. because it's such a great movie.
- 59:46Speaker 3: It's probably what you remember when they were doing those
- 59:48Speaker 3: after dark film festivals where six movies too scary that
- 59:52Speaker 3: we're going to put on the one night at one
- 59:54Speaker 3: weekend at the theater. Yeah.
- 59:56Speaker 1: I remember that sales pitch and I kind of ignored it,
- 59:59Speaker 1: but whatever. Yeah.
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: The after dark film festival or something like that.
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: And it was a good idea, but you know, the
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: movies were always kind of, but Mulberry drive was really good.
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: And that director's gone on to just keep doing bigger
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: and bigger things. I think his name is James Mickle.
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: And he's a guy I watch. But Bouldery Drive is
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: one of those weird things where you're going like, okay, oh,
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: this is about rat people in Brooklyn? And you're going like, ah.
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: But at a certain point, because the story is so good,
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: and this writer, that actor, Nick, co-wrote the script. And
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: so he gave himself a good part. There's a certain
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: scene in that movie where his character takes that turn
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: to like, you know, fight the rat. And you literally
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: stand up and cheer during the movie. And you're going like,
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: I am so invested in this rat person movie. Yeah.
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: could not you could not tear me away from this
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: movie right now i.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Mean you're talking to the right person for that that
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: seems like something i would totally be into.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: Yeah yeah i can't i can't recommend it high enough
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: you know and uh uh it's like one of those
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: weird little movies that get in another one from the
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: after dark uh film festival uh the only um that
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: well i guess they you had a mike mendez movie
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: uh the grave dancers which you know after the the convent,
- 1:01:30Speaker 3: you're going like, oh man, a new Mike Mendez movie.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: And then it's fine. He's redeemed himself since then. But
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Mike Mendez is another one, a guy I watch out for.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: But Mikkel Mendez. Oh, the other one that I only
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: saw here and I haven't found it on video, it
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: was called The Abandoned. And it was about this lady
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: who goes back to like the middle of like nowhere
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: Russia to her family home. And it was co-written by
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: Richard Stanley. And that one was freaking awesome.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: This is the thing that amazes and fascinates me about film.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Because being the movie geek that I am, but the
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: more and more I delve into it over the years,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: the more and more I find just titles that I've
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: never heard of. And sometimes we'll have legit actors and
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: directors that have worked in other things. And I'm like,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: there are so many titles out there that people don't
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: know exist that I'm like, cause even the movie geeks
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: find stuff. So I'm just like, you know, regular people
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: have not a clue. A lot of these things are
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: ever getting. So that's the one I'm just like, how
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: did these movie? And I've, you know, I've gotten sort
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: of involved or distanced, but as much as they don't
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: want me involved, the film community here, like I've talked to,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: you know, the people that run like the little film
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: society and like, Oh, stuff that they do and I'm
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: just like watch what they're trying to do to get
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: projects made and I'm just like anything gets the funding
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: and finds the right people and like it's just it
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: seems so overwhelming for these smaller movies but you know
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: it's one thing if you're making one of the tentpoles
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: of the year but like all these other ones that
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: get made and get finished and edited and put out
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: in some form it may just be streaming now but
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: like they're finished they're out there and like yeah sometimes
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: people watch them but like there's not even a good
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: way to advertise them now so it's like it's weird
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: that they find the funding even though there isn't like
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: a second hand to this part like there's no way
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: to put it out there successfully you just like put
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: all this time and energy and money into this project
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: and then just dump it on the internet now and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: be like, hope somebody watches this. I put a lot
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: of work into it. Like it amazes me the amount
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: of stuff that I will come across now. And I'm
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: just like, what? I have never even heard of this.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: How did I like, again, like I've focused on movies
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: more than most people. And I'm like, how have I
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: never even heard of this movie? Like there's just so
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: much stuff getting produced that, It's mind boggling.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: And every year, every year, more and more. And then
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: we got it. We got the entire history of film.
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: You'll never watch it all. You'll never get to see
- 1:04:10Speaker 3: all the movies that you want to see.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: That's what I've said. That's one of the things I
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: like about having this. If you consider movies, your hobby,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: some people are a little more invested, but like, you know,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: it's one thing if you're into coins, I'm going to
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: collect all the coins of the United States. And then
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: you get 50 coins and you're like, well, done with
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: that um dimes i'm gonna do dimes i don't know
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: you have to pick something else where like film if
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: you just in general like film you're never done you're
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: never going to you'll never watch all the old ones
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: that have been made and every day they're cranking out
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: new ones that you're not going to get to like
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: that's right just endlessly gives you something to do and
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: something to be interested in and so right that's that's
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: why i'm here yeah.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Yeah and then like say you like an actor you like,
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: or a director you like. And then you go like, well,
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: wait a minute, this writer did all his stuff. What else?
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: And then you'll find like 12, you'll go down the
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: writer's list and then you'll go like, oh, here's 12
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: movies he wrote. And then he actually got a chance
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: to direct one movie back in like 1987 that I've
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: not seen. And really it's the writer's voice in this
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: movie that I'm really interested in. And then you'll go
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: like down this writer's list. and you go like who
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: did the music on that that was amazing you'll see
- 1:05:25Speaker 3: like those guys it's just like endless endless it's a
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: maddening rabbit hole movies are a maddening rabbit hole and
- 1:05:33Speaker 3: you will never escape their their grass.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: That is true if you're the right kind of person
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: it just it takes you by the hand and it
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: never lets.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: Go there's a black hole reference there somewhere you.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: Know oh oh maximilian I want to climb inside you. Wait,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: is that? That seems really creepy. The kind of thing
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: you would do if you were transported to a science
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: fiction hell.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Wow, I can't watch that movie anymore. I never thought
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: of it that way.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: Maybe you were watching a different cut than I was. Granted,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: I spliced in some of my own scenes, but never mind.
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: What else do those arms do? He's got other attachments.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Don't you worry.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Okay. Did we just break the podcast?
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: We broke the internet.
- 1:06:25Speaker 10: I hope you're happy.
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: There we go. There we go. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:28Speaker 10: So, yeah.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: That was... you know, that movie, we're not going to
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: get into it. Because you know why? We don't need
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: to defend it. You know why? Because as the years
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: have gone on, I have discovered people like you out there,
- 1:06:43Speaker 3: other people all secretly love that movie. And so we're
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: just not going to, we all know what the public,
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: the high level official story is You know, the Warren
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: Report on that movie is that if you talk to
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: the man on the street who was a kid when
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: he saw it, that is a beloved movie. I mean,
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: it's got its famous celebrity apologists out there. You know,
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: you can go to Trailers for Hell and find them.
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: But you just, we'll just say.
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: I mean, it's funny because I didn't think of it
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: at the time, but now going back, we just recently
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: watched some god-awful movie that was a Star Wars knockoff.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: And you realize, like, again, as I said on that episode, like,
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Star Wars changed the industry so much that everybody out
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: there making film went, OK, we got to do that.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Like to some extent, we've got to figure out some
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: part of this, if not try to mimic all of it.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Like it became how do we work in pieces of
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: what this guy did because he's making a fortune doing
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: it or artistically he's getting to do stuff I want
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: to do and I haven't gotten to do. So you
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: see everybody starts scrambling. So thinking back, I was like,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: there's a whole lot of really cheesy knockoffs. Many of
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: them might be related to Roger Corman. But that aside,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: of anything in that era, of anything within the next
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: decade that came out, is anything as as high dollar
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: polished version of trying to mimic what Star Wars was doing.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Like it had Disney behind it before Disney was the
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: entity it is, but still like, I think that's what
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: separates that one is like that. The special effects are
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: still pretty good. They bring in a huge cast that
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: like most of which are recognizable, if nothing else, like, right.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: It's yeah, it's like it does a lot of the
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: same things that Star Wars was. Well, it's trying to
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: do what Star Wars was doing, some of which is successful.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: And it was super high dollar compared to all the
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: knockoffs that were being made.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: So, yeah. Yeah. There's so much interesting stuff about that
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: movie where.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: Where a it's kind of like Star Wars It's also
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: a product of its time where it's kind of a
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: disaster film, you know, set in space.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: And we've got, you know, our sidekicks are a wisecracking robot.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: And this one, we can understand them. He's not beeps
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: and whips, but he's kind of an art too that
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: he just floats around and has cool gadgetry and arms.
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: And like, he can do all kinds of stuff that like,
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: I mean, what if R2 could fly? Think how cool that, oh, no, wait. Oh,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Attack of the Clones. Oh, no.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: But I mean, that's kind of what we get. We
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: get like a version of, you know, our small mechanical
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: guy that kind of hangs out with us and does
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: cool stuff and saves the day. And like, so all
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: of this is like still like hitting these boxes that
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: Star Wars set up.
- 1:09:45Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: But again, it's like special effects, like the fireball rolling
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: down there. Like you're not going to see that in
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: any of the knockoff movies. Like that's a great, like
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: I remember they use that scene for like years on
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: like the cable promos of just like, here's shots of
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: movies real fast. And like the scene from the black
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: hole was in there because it was like one of
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: the impressive special effects shots of the last 10 years.
- 1:10:10Speaker 3: And like, so yeah.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: It was top of the line at its time.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: You can.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: I mean, the criticisms of it are valid. It is
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: a weirdly paced movie. It's a slow, talky.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not what kids wanted from a science fiction movie.
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: But if you're an adult watching it, it's interesting.
- 1:10:31Speaker 3: Yeah, and if you got that moody John Barry music
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: going on in the background, the depressing dirge of death
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: throughout that entire movie, you know, this requiem for disaster
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: that is going on throughout the entire movie.
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: That is kind of how it goes as the movie unfolds.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And so, I mean, how amazing is that?
- 1:10:52Speaker 3: You know, and so, I mean, I loved it as
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: a kid. I loved it. I still love it. And,
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: you know, there's this, Despite it being kind of a
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: train wreck, and I'm, you know, just because, you know,
- 1:11:03Speaker 3: people's criticisms, they have a point, you know, but they also,
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: you know, had they not made that train wreck, we
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: wouldn't have gotten that, those scenes, you know, with the
- 1:11:11Speaker 3: meteor going down the thing, we wouldn't have gotten like
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: an interest, some of these interesting ideas that they had,
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: you know, like a ship ran by zombies and, you know,
- 1:11:22Speaker 3: what's it called? Telekinetically speaking to robots, you know? And,
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: but I guess it's really just kind of a plot
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: device to keep them talking, you know? I second that
- 1:11:32Speaker 3: we got a message.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: But even like the fact that it ends the way
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: it does, I'm like, who, who okayed that? Like who
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: said that was the way to end this movie? That's
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: another one of those things, like how this came together,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: how this became a movie period, let alone how it
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: ended up being this version of the movie. It's amazing
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: to me.
- 1:11:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:11:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:54Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: Yeah. Absolutely. It's like, they're going to like, we're, we're
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: doing star Wars, but we're also trying to do real
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: science fiction, but we also don't care about science.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: It's playing, it's trying to play star Wars card game
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: the whole time. And then all of a sudden at
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: the end, it lays down a 2001 card. Whoa, wait,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: what is this?
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: So it's, yeah, it's, it's trying to be a little
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: headier than, than most generic knockoff star Wars movies. But,
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: And most people would say it's not successful, but I
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: think whatever it is, is fascinating to watch.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: It's fascinating. That's right. That's what it is. It's fascinating.
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: Is it always good? Maybe not, but it's always fascinating
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: to watch the people that were involved in this movie
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: at this time. Anthony Perkins, Robert Forrester, Maximilian Schell, the level,
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: these old classics. Slim Pickens. Slim Pickens, how do I forget?
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Anything with Slim Pickens is cooler.
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And like the craftsmanship, the craftsmen, the Harlan,
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: I'm close. I'm calling them Ellen Shaw. Harlan Ellen Shaw.
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: I almost called her Harlan Ellison. Anyway, the Ellen Shaw
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: people were working on it. Just like, you know, the level,
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: it's sick. Movies are a time and place, a certain
- 1:13:13Speaker 3: distillation of certain talents coming together under the right circumstances.
- 1:13:18Speaker 3: Maybe they didn't have the script right, you know. Gary Day,
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: I think. Gary Nelson. Oh, gosh. Who directed freaking Black Hole?
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: I'm going totally blank here. Gary. We're going to just
- 1:13:29Speaker 3: say the director of The Love Bug.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: Gary Marshall, director of The Black Hole.
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: Gary Marshall, who directed The Black Hole and The Love Bug.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: Starring Hector Alonso as Captain....
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: Is Gary Nelson the guy who played James Bond in
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: the old American casino? Or I'm not thinking... Barry. I'm
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: thinking Chuck Berry.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: Chuck Berry starring in The Black Hole.
- 1:13:57Speaker 11: Running to and fro, hard working at the mill. Never
- 1:14:00Speaker 11: fail in the mill, yet come a rotten bill.
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Too much for business. Too much for business. Too much
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: for business. For me to be involved in.
- 1:14:15Speaker 3: Good evening.

- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Yes, there's an air about hot coffee that's hard to resist. Full-bodied,
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: refreshing hot coffee makes any time a pleasant interlude. Won't
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: you have some now?
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: So this is a total coffee side note.
- 1:14:58Speaker 3: I miss Heine Brothers.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: They're still out there.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: You can go and wait six feet apart from everyone
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: else in your line and go get your cup. You
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: just can't have it there with the other people because
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: there's people and you're supposed to stay away from people, but...
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: I miss my peeps and my baristas. I'm telling you,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: that's why. Your only option for the moment is to
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: go order some bags of beans. You know, go to moviemouthdown.com.
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: Click on the Heine Brothers link. Go order you some.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: They'll bring it to your house. And that will make
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: do until the world opens back up and you can
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: go have your somewhat normal experience.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: You can, and you can talk to your favorite barista
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: and run into.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Your favorite regulars and have an awesome cup of coffee.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: You've got your mask on. They can't understand you. It's just,
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: it's not the same now. We want to get back
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: to the old way, hopefully. But in the meantime, you know,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: we're still supporting tiny brothers. Go get your house. Yes, absolutely.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: Keep them alive so we can return to the old
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: way somewhere down the line.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: My favorite way, the Heine brothers way.
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: There is an inexorable force in the cosmos where time
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: and space converge.
- 1:16:20Speaker 3: A place beyond man's vision, but not his reach. It
- 1:16:26Speaker 3: is the.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: Most mysterious and awesome.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Point in the universe. Where the here and now may
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: be forever.
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: And my ship, you ask?
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: It is unavoidable.
- 1:16:50Speaker 10: Moving through space.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Swallowing everything in its path. Radio waves.
- 1:16:56Speaker 7: Light.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Are you programmed to speak?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: Even planets and stars.
- 1:17:05Speaker 10: Now.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Gravity's at maximum, Dan.
- 1:17:08Speaker 3: My God, I think it's got us.
- 1:17:09Speaker 10: Man is about to enter.
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: We've got a break here, too.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: The Black Hole.
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: The Black Hole.
- 1:17:36Speaker 10: That begins where everything ends.
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Even in the middle of all this craziness in the world,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: and I'm still stupidly, for many people, probably trying to
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: put together these Horror Club exclusive episodes. I assume nobody
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: cares and it's all going to fall apart. Nobody's going
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: to want these anymore. Yesterday, we got a new patron.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Somebody joined on in the middle of this insanity. And
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: I was like, you know, it's these things that make
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: me want to keep going. Thank you, mysterious patron. I'm
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: glad anyone out there is still listening in general, but
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: even more so when they actually support the show and
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: want to come on board and help us keep this
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: thing running on a good day, let alone in the weird,
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: uncertain times we're living in. Thank you to all our
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: patrons and in particular any newcomers. Hey, welcome and tell
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: your friends. We welcome all new people in. It'll give
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: you something to listen to as the.
- 1:18:41Speaker 10: World falls apart.
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: Thank you, patron. I think you should go to movie meltdown.com
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: right now and just click on the Patreon link and
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: join up. And then all these amazing horror themed episodes
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: we've got coming up that you can listen to at
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: the lowest. I try to keep it like, so everybody
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: can join in. So like you can throw more money
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: at us if you want, but mostly as long as
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: you like kick in a couple of bucks, you can
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: always listen to, to the horror episodes and experience the
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: horror with us so join the club now yeah don't
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: you want to be cool yeah I mean really don't
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: you want to be cool all the cool kids are
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: doing it okay wait just by being a movie geek
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: you're already not a cool kid and neither are we
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: so all the geeks are doing it join the club
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: now cool's a relative term anyway certainly certainly is today
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: so yeah get on board Join right now and you
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: can partake in that and all of our other ridiculous
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: discussions about horror. What is the minimum again? Two bucks.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: Two dollars.
- 1:19:49Speaker 7: Two dollars.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: Two dollars. That's all you need to listen to the episodes. So,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: I mean, it kind of keeps us alive. I was
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: discussing the horrible situation it's been to try to keep
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: things going earlier to these poor bastards. Like, yeah, it's
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: not just like, hey, I'm rich and I want your
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: money anyway. It's, It really does keep the show going
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: to the level that people don't realize. It's kind of
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: the only way it's survived this last year and a
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: half or so since we started this.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: So it is not only greatly appreciated, but it gives
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: us kind of a good way to come up with
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: something specific to put out there just for these people
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: that we don't no actually care enough to kick in.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: So you get a lot of great stuff for that too.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. I like, I like being able
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: to craft something for a very special group. So you
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: guys are super cool. And then you get these awesome episodes.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: So one more reason, go join up now. So go
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: to our Patreon page, join the meltdown club, become a
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: milk a tear. You get cool stuff and you can
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: help us keep the meltdown rolling. Damn the man, save
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: the meltdown.
- 1:21:06Speaker 12: This is Dawn Wells.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: You might remember me, Marianna Gilligan-Sallen. You are listening to
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Movie Meltdown.
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 1:21:18Speaker 5: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Now, on with the show.
- 1:21:45Speaker 11: Pull up your jeans and we will truck on down.
- 1:21:48Speaker 11: A knockout joint at the edge of town. A real
- 1:21:51Speaker 11: homecoming for all you cats.
- 1:21:53Speaker 13: You keep on walking.
- 1:21:54Speaker 7: Till you see that.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: Welcome at all in there. Lose your lead at the house,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: the house of good life. We'll have the time.
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: Chuck Berry, who directed The Black Hole, the Alzheimer's has
- 1:22:09Speaker 3: totally just taken over. So the director of The Black Hole,
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: you know, He got a hot ticket off of that movie.
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: I don't know how it did. It probably made his
- 1:22:21Speaker 3: money back. Who knows? I don't know.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: At the time, it did okay, just because it was Disney.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: It already had a built-in fan base there. It was
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: knockoff Star Wars. There were only so many movies in
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: theaters back then. So I'm sure it made its money back.
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: Right. So you got this guy who came up through,
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: who just... He worked at Disney doing live action comedies.
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: You know, I think he did.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: Gary Nelson, by the way.
- 1:22:44Speaker 3: Gary Nelson. I think one of the 12 names I
- 1:22:47Speaker 3: screamed out was probably that. So I was right. Totally right.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: Totally right. Chuck Berry did direct Black Hole.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Gary Marshall, Chuck Berry. You're right.
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: All of these.
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: It was a team effort.
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: It was. It was. It's like the Wachowskis.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: The Marshall siblings. Yes.
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: Yes. Penny Marshall, Gary Marshall.
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Penny Marshall and Gary Marshall together directing The Black Hole.
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: So good.
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: I would watch that.
- 1:23:22Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:23:23Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: So Gary Nelson made a little bit. I guess he
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: got a better agent after The Black Hole and he
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: got to he got on staff. He was the director
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: of Nighthawks. The Stallone movie.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Oh, the previously mentioned by me many a time Nighthawk.
- 1:23:42Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Nighthawk. Better and not as good as it
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: could be. It was good.
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: Again, as I said, I think it was on the
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: previous soundtrack episode. My kid brain watching the promo for
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: that on cable. I'm like, so Rocky made a movie
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: with Lando? This is the coolest thing ever? And then
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: you grow up a little bit and you're like, wait,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: and they're chasing that guy from Blade Runner? Everything about
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: it is awesome. If only they could work in a
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: cameo from Catherine Mary Stewart.
- 1:24:20Speaker 9: Holy shit, my head's going to explode!
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: All the greatest things rolled into one. Only somebody was
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: in drag in this movie.
- 1:24:32Speaker 3: That was the best. Right. Oh, there we go. That
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: was the best description of Nighthawks ever.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: And again, that's how my brain, I'm going to pretend
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: like worked when I was a kid, but it still does.
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: Let's not pretend.
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: And so, yeah, I think just as like in a
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: pitch meeting, this is the greatest movie ever made. Whether
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: or not you feel like it's an awesome cop drama
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: is your call, but I'm just like, as.
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: A pitch meeting, this is awesome. On paper, right. So
- 1:25:00Speaker 3: I think it was like the first or second day
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: of directing Nighthawks, Gary Nelson, they had some, Gary Nelson
- 1:25:05Speaker 3: comes up to like the crew and he goes like,
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: so I have no idea how to direct this scene.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: You want to be a director, right? You're making your
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: movies and whatnot. Get over here.
- 1:25:18Speaker 3: Right, right. Exactly. So, so Gary Nelson's out, you know,
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: he didn't follow up anything. I don't know what he
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: did after Black Hole, but Black Hole.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: A lot of TV movies after that.
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: Okay. Okay. And so he got to keep working and everything.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: But just like that was like such an event movie.
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: Black Hole was like, I remember looking at the press ads,
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: you know, going back and looking at the press ads, like,
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: you know, 70 millimeter. They had some kind of new
- 1:25:45Speaker 3: sound system, you know, four quad Dolby array sound, you know,
- 1:25:50Speaker 3: whatever something like. You know, I have the soundtrack and everything.
- 1:25:54Speaker 3: It was like the first digital soundtrack. So I guess
- 1:25:56Speaker 3: it's like the first digitally recorded soundtrack. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: I think that's what separates that one from so many
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: of the other knockoffs. It was backed by Disney. Like
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: Disney was still not what it is today, but still
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: like above and beyond most of the other little wannabe
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: studios that are producing stuff. So they really had money.
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: And again, they were trying to break into that new market.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: You know, it's like they're old, like 70s live action
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: stuff seemed, you know, like a joke. And nobody took
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: it seriously just because they had Kurt Russell in them all.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: But like so they they were trying to like move
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: in because I'm thinking that was the very first time
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: Walt Disney put out a movie that wasn't G rated.
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: I think, I think you're right.
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I think that's the one. So again, they're like, we're
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: moving back into live action stuff. We're trying to be
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: a little darker. We're definitely trying to be a little
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: darker taking it PG. So it's like they were moving
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: into new territory that like, I think they really were
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: trying to put themselves on, on the, you know, in
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: the game with everybody else in the studio. Like we're
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: not just making animated kids movies anymore. Like, and you
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: see like the ambition that led them where they are
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: today because they, they had, they just kept making, you know,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: Robin hood and snow white. And like, if that's all
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: they ever did, there's no way they would have taken
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: over the industry. Like they did. It was that level of,
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: let's see if we can take it up a notch.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: And then a few years later, they're throwing out touchstone
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: pictures and like, let's, we can move to R rated.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Let's see if we can start pulling in totally different
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: kinds of writers and directors. And so, yeah, you see this,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: like this giant mutant creature that started as a little
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: mouse and mutated into this monster.
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. No, you go like, and like, so yeah,
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: black hole and Tron and a watcher in the woods,
- 1:27:37Speaker 3: all those movies are just like these weird growing pain moments.
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: movies that were allowed them to break they're they're ugly
- 1:27:44Speaker 3: but they broke the mold and allowed them to stretch
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: out and not just do cute little foxes anymore you
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: know uh for everything one of the greatest things i've
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: ever seen is have you seen the documentary uh waking
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: sleeping beauty which i guess is about the uh awakening
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: of disney into like the unstoppable behemoth that it is today.
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: No but i'm on board with it already.
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: It's it's great it's great and um it's on the
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: disney streaming service so um so it's called waking sleep
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: and beauty the greatest scene in it though is where
- 1:28:20Speaker 3: they find a young uh tim burton sitting in his
- 1:28:24Speaker 3: cube you know trying to draw a cute little fox
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: or something and he looks So miserable and stressed out.
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: And like, what have I done? What have I done?
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: Why am I here? What's going on? You can see
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: the panic and terror. and you know frustration in his face.
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: There's angry little sketches of a man with scissor hands
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: next to him be like one day i'm gonna stab
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: these people in the head with my scissor hands i'll show.
- 1:28:51Speaker 3: Them that's right that's right and um And my son,
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: he's into animation. And so I just go like, I
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: tell him the legendary story of how a young rogue
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: named Don Bluth who was, you know, weighed down by
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: the oppressive, totalitarian system of Disney, you know, broke free
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: with his fellow comrades and started his own studio. You know,
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: it goes like, Dad, tell me the Don Blue story again.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: Have faith, son. One day you can make rock-a-doodle.
- 1:29:38Speaker 3: Very interesting career that Don Bluth until Titan AE and
- 1:29:41Speaker 3: then he just could not get a job after that.
- 1:29:44Speaker 3: It's really sad.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: Which is funny because I don't remember having a problem
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: with that. I have not watched it since the first time,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: but I remember thinking there's some really cool stuff in
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: that movie. So I need to revisit it.
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: I think it's great. And, uh, I mean, it was
- 1:30:00Speaker 3: probably the closest thing you could get to heavy metal
- 1:30:03Speaker 3: in 2000 or 1999, you know? And, uh, and so
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: for that reason, I was on board with it. And
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: there was something about, for me, early, uh, late 90,
- 1:30:17Speaker 3: early 2000s CG animation. That's, I guess it's called cell
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: shading animation. It's kind of like the iron giant, uh,
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: that style of animation. Um, I love that. I love that.
- 1:30:29Speaker 3: I could watch that all day. Like the opening credits
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: of Invader Zim, you know? I just love that kind
- 1:30:35Speaker 3: of chunky. It looks like 2D, but it also looks
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: like 3D. And I don't know why they don't do
- 1:30:44Speaker 3: it anymore, because I just love that style.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: I'm sold already, because I'll just watch the whole episode
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: of Invader Zim. So yeah, that's all I need.
- 1:30:53Speaker 3: It's the greatest thing in the world, but yeah. So
- 1:30:55Speaker 3: the Titan AE had that kind of like that kind
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: of spaceship, that kind of animation where, um, you know,
- 1:31:04Speaker 3: they were trying to make the 3d look like the 2d,
- 1:31:07Speaker 3: but it doesn't quite, but it's, it's very interesting looking. And, uh,
- 1:31:12Speaker 3: it just, it's just an, it's just a look that's
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: gone by. It's just not fashionable to do that anymore. So,
- 1:31:18Speaker 3: you know, um, What are we talking about? Don Bluth?
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was going to say. I'm trying
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: to hit eventually, but we've done it along the way, naturally.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: We've inadvertently hit a few. Basically, the whole process in
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: this is just phoning people up going, hey, are you alive?
- 1:31:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: What have you been doing in general? But on top
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: of that, have you been watching anything while locked in
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: your home? Yeah. You've hit a few along the way,
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: but have you watched anything lately that you haven't mentioned?
- 1:31:52Speaker 3: Okay. Right. Right. Well, yeah.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: I've watched a couple of things. Sure. Let's just go. So, yeah.
- 1:32:06Speaker 3: I've got a couple of subscriptions out there, you know,
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: of course, the different things, but let's. OK, so, again,
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: I've got I've got, I guess, one official teenager in
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: my house, 14. And I feel sorry for you. All right.
- 1:32:27Speaker 3: We're still talking. We're doing okay. One day they just
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: sort of shut the door on you and they say.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: You know, don't open it until they're 27.
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. And they're just, and you're just like,
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: you know, I've got all this spyware on her phone
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: and everything like that.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: So I can, I mean, you kind of have to,
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: I don't, I don't blame people. I would hate it
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: if I were the kid, but I totally understand if
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I were the grownups.
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: Listen, I'm not worried about it. I mean, look, kids,
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: they're so, sophisticated.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: She figured out how to hack her way through that
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: day one.
- 1:32:59Speaker 3: Day one. There's probably like 12 YouTube shows like how
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: to bypass this program that you're dumb.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: Why your parents are stupid.
- 1:33:10Speaker 3: Right. Exactly. Exactly. So, you know, I mean, I get it,
- 1:33:13Speaker 3: but you know, I just gotta, you gotta try, you know,
- 1:33:16Speaker 3: I'm going like cyberbullying, you know.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: And just yelling that at her. You're like, okay, dad,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I get it.
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: Close the door behind you.
- 1:33:26Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. Please, please. One day they tell you, one
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: day they tell you every single thought that they have
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: in their head. And, and it doesn't matter if it's like, uh,
- 1:33:39Speaker 3: what it is, you know, it's just like, what is it? Uh,
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: it's kind of like you, and you feel like Steve
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: Martin and planes, trains and automobiles. Yeah.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: And the next thing you know, you're switched gears to
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: parenthood and you're digging through the trash looking for a retainer.
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: Right, exactly.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: It's all the same movie, just different parts of your life.
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: You're barging into the room just so they pay attention
- 1:34:02Speaker 3: to you for like five minutes. You know, it's like
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: trying to get an interview with Mick Jagger, you know,
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: and everything.
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: Just like uh okay i've got 60 seconds you got
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: 60 seconds go you know and you're just like uh
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: okay when you were writing this song you know anyway
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: blah blah blah yeah when you were in that.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Movie and you were doing that thing remember that movie
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: nobody watched that you were in because that's where i
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: would go with mick jagger let's talk about free jack
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: go like.
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: You didn't have to say free jack i knew you
- 1:34:31Speaker 3: were talking about free jack I was.
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: Kind of thinking performance, but you know, mostly Free Jack.
- 1:34:38Speaker 3: We know you're talking about Free Jack.
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: Mostly Free Jack.
- 1:34:41Speaker 3: Great, great trailer for Free Jack.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: It won you over, didn't it?
- 1:34:46Speaker 3: It did. It did. It was the, the, the, the
- 1:34:49Speaker 3: Pilsen playing. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: That car like ramping up into the over. That's a good,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: that's a good stunt. I want to see that explosion
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: every time.
- 1:34:59Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely. That, that, that scene was filmed actually near
- 1:35:03Speaker 3: where I grew up and, uh, at the, uh, what
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: is it? The Atlanta motor speedway. Yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: You're kind of responsible for the explosion.
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: I'm just saying, I'm just saying, I don't know if
- 1:35:14Speaker 3: there is a, uh, bronze plaque on that overpress. commemorating
- 1:35:20Speaker 3: a national historical plaque. But there should be.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: What you're saying is the next time I come out there,
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: you're going on a road trip to see this. We'll
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: both be standing there next to it weeping and people
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: will be like, what the hell's wrong with those guys?
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: Oh, Freejack! That was awesome. It's more of.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: Those Freejack weirdos. Just keep driving, Martha.
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: That's right. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's a big revenue generator
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: down here is the Freejack tours.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: The Freejack fan base alone is what powers that city.
- 1:36:03Speaker 3: Pretty much. I mean, Walking Dead gets all the love
- 1:36:07Speaker 3: and everything, but it's really the Freejack pilgrimages that are
- 1:36:12Speaker 3: happening year after year.
- 1:36:14Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:36:16Speaker 3: I can see that. Okay, so movies. I feel rude
- 1:36:23Speaker 3: because I've just been randomly.
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: You jumped off of the having a teenager. Was that
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: leading to a movie you watched?
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: Oh, right, right, right. Okay, so I showed her The
- 1:36:36Speaker 3: Boss Boys.
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: All right. How did that go over?
- 1:36:42Speaker 3: You know, you never know. how a movie is going
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: to play to another generation. And you never know now
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: being an old user, how you're going to see the
- 1:36:54Speaker 3: movie with fresh eyes. Yeah.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: As I've said, I, I rewatch things and it's a
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: totally different movie sometimes. And, and again, that's what I
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: think is so awesome about being into movies is like,
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: not only are there titles you'll never get to, but
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: even revisiting movies, it becomes a different movie.
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: So absolutely.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: This movie do that for you.
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: Well, I got to say, when I watched it maybe
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: 10 years ago, I maybe was annoyed. But maybe because
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: I was just in a dark place that night or something.
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: Or maybe it was just like, I can't stand the
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: Corys at this point in my life or something like that.
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: Watching it nowadays, I'm going like, this may be just
- 1:37:35Speaker 3: like the greatest movie ever made.
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: It's at least the most 80s movie ever made.
- 1:37:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:37:42Speaker 3: I mean, it's got... it's got like that Sam Raimi
- 1:37:45Speaker 3: kind of influence to it, you know, with like the
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: one-liners and the bloody death. And, you know, I originally
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: showed it to my niece because she was into Twilight
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: and I was going like, you don't, you, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:37:58Speaker 3: You're Twilight. Watch this movie. This is the real vampires, right?
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: And it is funny, you know, there's like, they do
- 1:38:07Speaker 3: literally say Michael, you know, I was like telling Sarah,
- 1:38:11Speaker 3: if you don't, Like the movie, just count how many
- 1:38:13Speaker 3: times they say the word Michael or Mike. Michael, Michael, Michael. Non-stop. Non-stop.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: They should have done... This was before, I guess, word
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: counters and how many times does the script have this
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: word Michael? And so you could go back and change
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: it and everything a little bit. But yeah, they say
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: his name a million and one times in that movie.
- 1:38:40Speaker 3: So that's fun if nothing else. But, I mean, what
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: that movie... What did she think about it? She liked it.
- 1:38:52Speaker 3: Certain 80s movies do still translate well. It is very
- 1:38:58Speaker 3: refreshing to them because it is practical effects and it
- 1:39:02Speaker 3: does have different kind of characters. It's just of a different...
- 1:39:06Speaker 3: As long as it's well-paced and it doesn't meander like
- 1:39:11Speaker 3: those movies. This movie is so MTV that they paced
- 1:39:15Speaker 3: it to be able to keep people's interest. And so, yeah, yeah.
- 1:39:20Speaker 3: I mean, so she was with it. She was, she
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: was on it. But for me, it was like for
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: me watching it for the first time, because this was
- 1:39:29Speaker 3: the first time I hadn't seen it on VHS. So
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: I got to see it full, full aspect ratio. And
- 1:39:36Speaker 3: I got to see a HD copy of it. And
- 1:39:39Speaker 3: then I was just going like, you know, it wasn't
- 1:39:41Speaker 3: like the tracking lines and, you know, a copy of
- 1:39:44Speaker 3: a rental, you know? And so, it was for me like,
- 1:39:50Speaker 3: like a jaw droppingly beautiful movie to watch, you know? And,
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: and so, cause you got Schumacher who is a great.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: Again, Schumacher has taken a lot of shit over the years.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: Some of it deservedly, but like he has also put
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: together some great looking movies. Like he has such a
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: visual flair for like what he's doing that like, if
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: you work it into the right script, if you get everything,
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: you know, all the, everything firing on this movie, you'll
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: get a great movie. And then sometimes it's being mishandled
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: at other parts of the production. And it's not such
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: a great movie, but you know, I think stylistically, he's
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: still a really talented director.
- 1:40:32Speaker 3: I'm looking at a poster for Falling Down right now.
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: I mean, it's like, I think Schumacher's great. And, you know.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: I'm a Flatliners man myself.
- 1:40:41Speaker 3: Oh, Flatliners. Amazing.
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: I mean, just visually, that is like, it is the
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: whole thing has this weird green tint to it. Like
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: the fact that you chose to shoot it and have
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: it be this good. Again, it's supposed to be kind
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: of a creepy, are we crossing over into an afterworld,
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: another world? Like what the hell are we doing? And
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: it has that creepy tone. just through the visuals, like
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: the whole movie. Like I, again, I think he's still
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: super talented.
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: Oh yeah.
- 1:41:07Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:41:08Speaker 3: He's, he's great. So you got Schumacher. All right. Uh,
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: firing on all cylinders. You've got, you've got the heft
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: of producer Richard Donner throwing his, that money at it.
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: I've heard of that guy.
- 1:41:21Speaker 3: Yeah. You've got, you've got the, you've got the, uh,
- 1:41:25Speaker 3: cinematographer of taxi driver, uh, and, and all these like
- 1:41:29Speaker 3: great Scorsese films. And then you've got the production designer,
- 1:41:34Speaker 3: Bo Welsh, you know, who does all the Burton stuff,
- 1:41:37Speaker 3: you know, uh, well, the early Bert and Bo Welsh
- 1:41:40Speaker 3: is like a freaking genius. You can always tell about
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: like Joe versus the volcano is not a good movie
- 1:41:45Speaker 3: because it's a movie. It's a good movie because of
- 1:41:48Speaker 3: Bo Welsh, basically I say, you know, um, uh, so,
- 1:41:53Speaker 3: so you got these three really amazing, uh, people working
- 1:41:59Speaker 3: with the resources that they need. And then the movie
- 1:42:01Speaker 3: also like has this, um, culture that you're just not
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: used to seeing in movies of this, like life on
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: the skids, beach, punk, hippie kind of thing. Like all
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: the local character, I guess it's Santa Monica or something
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: like that. But like the, the under the, Hey, he
- 1:42:21Speaker 3: goes like, Hey, is there any jobs around here? And
- 1:42:23Speaker 3: he goes like nothing legal. And it's funny, but it's
- 1:42:26Speaker 3: kind of like, like these people like X hippie, you know, punk.
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: That's what I was going to ask if that part translate.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: Cause when I think of it, I do like think
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: of that little, like everything about it was meant to
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: be so cool because that's, what's like seductive to this,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: you know, this new kid in town is like, look
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: at all these quote unquote, cool kids hanging out at
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: the beach and, So I'm like, to a teenager now,
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: do they look at this and go, what the hell's
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: wrong with all these old people? Why aren't these guys
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: wearing shirts? Put a shirt on with your leather jacket,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: you weirdo.
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I think the greasy guy with the saxophone is not.
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: Cool now i.
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: Think the hell you say i know i think that
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: man will always be sexy we know it.
- 1:43:14Speaker 3: Right right i mean i think i think she was
- 1:43:17Speaker 3: she thought that was hysterical you know it kind.
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: Of was in the 80s but it was also like
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: it's a weird thing like you're still drawn to it
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: it's strange and yet you you can't get enough of it.
- 1:43:30Speaker 3: Yeah yeah And so you go like, so, so yeah,
- 1:43:33Speaker 3: I think she, I do. Did she think these people
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: were cool? I don't know. I think maybe kids now
- 1:43:38Speaker 3: are like, they think different things are kind of cool,
- 1:43:41Speaker 3: you know, like racing.
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: If that carried through, because so much of the movie
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: is built around him thinking these kids are cool or
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: like everybody thinking these, the adults thinking these kids are trouble.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: And like, if they're laughing at them, then that's not true.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: So that's the part I would, I wasn't sure of
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: how it hold up for, for somebody, you know, legitimately
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: coming at it new as a kid yeah no i.
- 1:44:03Speaker 3: Think i think she was with it i think she
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: was i think it just does translate well and everything
- 1:44:07Speaker 3: you know i mean who knows who knows she could
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: have gone on instagram five seconds later and said like
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: my dad made me watch the worst movie you know
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: but um.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: Dear friends of the internet my dad is lame oh
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: it's another one of these posts.
- 1:44:23Speaker 3: But i mean she got through it i mean she
- 1:44:25Speaker 3: she ran from the room when we tried to show
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: our karate kid and everything so you know i mean
- 1:44:30Speaker 3: you know that movie did not translate but um yeah
- 1:44:33Speaker 3: it's weird right like.
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: There's some universal truths in karate kid what the.
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: Hell i think it's just the pacing you know it's
- 1:44:39Speaker 3: just the i.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: Mean it is essentially just rocky yeah Yeah. It's a
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Karate Kid version of Rocky, but.
- 1:44:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I mean, Lost Boys is so, so stylish
- 1:44:51Speaker 3: and so MTV and so cool to look at. And
- 1:44:56Speaker 3: you just go like, man, that is such a cool
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: idea for a movie of these vampires who live forever
- 1:45:04Speaker 3: and you get to live forever at an amusement park
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: by this old rundown beach. It was just really the
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: sense of place that I really got that.
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: I walked away from and, you know, the vampire's lair
- 1:45:16Speaker 3: is set all day. You know, it's like, it's like
- 1:45:20Speaker 3: so over hyperly art directed, but you go like, man,
- 1:45:25Speaker 3: that's kind of nice to see, you know, it's nice
- 1:45:28Speaker 3: to see that kind of, you know, Baroque, you know,
- 1:45:32Speaker 3: punk kind of look again, you know, I don't know.
- 1:45:36Speaker 3: I was really blown away by it. And the only
- 1:45:40Speaker 3: thing that really annoyed me, was supposedly, and I see
- 1:45:45Speaker 3: the Richard Donner connection, was supposedly all the characters in
- 1:45:52Speaker 3: the original screenplay were kids. And I think they had
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: Richard Donner's involvement or he got involved because of the Goonies.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: Like a Goonies thing, yeah.
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: Like a horror movie Goonies.
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:46:04Speaker 3: And so you don't... When Schumacher got involved, he kind
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: of got that all.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: He upped the teenager level, so it's cool teenagers, not
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: dorky 11-year-olds.
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: I mean, we still kind of get that with the
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: Corey band. I mean, they're the dorky kids of the story.
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: And there is one scene in the movie where you
- 1:46:25Speaker 3: can sort of see what Lost Boys could have been
- 1:46:28Speaker 3: when they go down and they kill Alex Winter.
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46:33Speaker 3: That whole scene, they are being so screechy and loud
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: the entire scene. That you're going like, oh, I see
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: Richard Donner. I see how this would have been a
- 1:46:45Speaker 3: Goonies sequel kind of.
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: I think I'm glad that's not what happened.
- 1:46:51Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Because I was so annoyed with them being like,
- 1:46:54Speaker 3: you're trying to get into a vampire lair and they
- 1:46:57Speaker 3: are just bickering and screaming and screeching. And going like,
- 1:47:00Speaker 3: go this way. No, no, go this way. Oh, look out. Ah!
- 1:47:03Speaker 7: Ah!
- 1:47:03Speaker 3: They're screaming every second. Every second they're screaming. And it's like.
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: Technically, we already had the monster squad by that point.
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: So we didn't really need another version.
- 1:47:13Speaker 3: We did not need another version. And then, so watching
- 1:47:17Speaker 3: that scene, it's the same. It was annoying because, like,
- 1:47:20Speaker 3: Goonies for me doesn't hold up nowadays. You know, it's like.
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: I didn't like it when I was younger. Like I
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: was the one kid that did not worship at the
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: altar of Goonies. I was just like, I think I
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: just hit the point of it being like, this is
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: a dumb kids movie. And I already like more grownup stuff.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: You know, it's like I was at the dividing line
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: of like, yeah, I see the dumb kids angle way
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: too much for me where I think other people were just,
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: young enough that they didn't see that art to it.
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: But I'm just like, that's all I saw when I
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: watched that. I'm like, yeah, I like Cindy Lauper. The
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: music video is cool. Like I watched that music video
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: a thousand times, but like the movie, eh, I saw
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: it like maybe once at the time. And like, anytime
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: I've tried to watch parts of it again, I'm just like, no,
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: I think I was right as a kid. Like it
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: just doesn't, it doesn't come across as anything but a
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: kid's movie. Like there's aspects of it now. I'm like, okay,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: I can see why other kids might've liked it, but,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: I still just, yeah, it just doesn't ring with me
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: the way that it does with so many other people.
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: that grew up around that time i i.
- 1:48:22Speaker 3: Know and i was one of those people and i
- 1:48:24Speaker 3: was uh completely had drank the uh goonies kool-aid and
- 1:48:29Speaker 3: uh going.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: Back sure that hunky josh brolin kid i get that Plimpton.
- 1:48:35Speaker 3: Come on. It's all about Plimpton. Well, of the crew.
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: I mean, Carrie's cute and all, but Plimpton, she sounds crazy.
- 1:48:42Speaker 3: Crazy, wonderful. Crazy, amazing.
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: Which, to go back to our featured movie, two words,
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: Jamie Girtz. What we all need is a little more
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: Jamie Girtz in our lives.
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: Jamie Girtz. Bring forth the Girtz. And who's the girl
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: from from random random starlets from 80s movies uh gert
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: and plimpton and who's the girl from uh willow the
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: the redhead oh.
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: The sasha um joanne she was uh joanne wally.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: Kilmer for a while right right right.
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: She was just joanne wally when i first saw her
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: again scandal well mostly the poster The poster for Scandal
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: won me over so much. She's like, it just convinced
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: you how hot she was. And you're just like, all right,
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: you're right.
- 1:49:36Speaker 3: She is.
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: And then I'm like, wait, she married that guy?
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: And it must have killed her career because we didn't
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: get a ton of her after that.
- 1:49:44Speaker 3: It may have been a Phoebe Cates situation.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: I don't want to work anymore. You've ruined my life.
- 1:49:50Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Oh, my gosh.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: So.
- 1:49:54Speaker 3: Okay, so that was a really weird rabbit hole. Goonies, though,
- 1:50:00Speaker 3: does not hold up. It is like the screechiness movie
- 1:50:04Speaker 3: ever made. It should be a silent film because it's
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: really like all these privileged kid actors who just they've
- 1:50:16Speaker 3: been built up by all their yes men and they're
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: all paying for their parents' yachts.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: Hey, short round is totally cool.
- 1:50:26Speaker 3: He's cool in that other movie. You just feel their snide,
- 1:50:38Speaker 3: smarmy privilege all over the place. They're like, look how
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: cute I am. It's so annoying. Look how much personality
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: I have. It's grating. And the best thing we could
- 1:50:55Speaker 3: do is like, if we wanted to just end movies,
- 1:50:59Speaker 3: we should have like Rob Zombie direct a remake of
- 1:51:03Speaker 3: The Goonies. And it would just be like... The.
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: Universe will collapse upon itself.
- 1:51:08Speaker 3: It would just rip a hole in this base in
- 1:51:11Speaker 3: time and.
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: I'm kind of on board with it. Mostly just because
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: I know how much it would piss everyone off. And
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: I'm like not at this table, so I can just
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: back up and watch the whole thing just collapse upon it.
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: It's just the train wreck come barreling through.
- 1:51:27Speaker 3: Yeah, totally, man. Totally. So yeah, yeah. Lost Boys, Lost Boys, great. Brian,
- 1:51:36Speaker 3: tell me a movie you've watched recently.
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: Let's see. Uh, actually, um, I don't know. Do we
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: want to go down a horror rabbit hole or I
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: did just what, cause I've heard about it for years.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: I knew the title, but somebody mentioned it recently. I
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: was like, Oh yeah, I haven't watched the, uh, train
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: to Busan.
- 1:51:57Speaker 3: Oh, awesome.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: Kind of poor again. Like it's one of those, like
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: if you take that one element out of it, it's
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: so like, I was possibly way more fascinated by like,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: the railway system of a different country. Like I spent
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: so much of my time just be like, okay, so
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: this is how it, and that, and there's a lot
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: of tracks on this tree. Yeah, this is pretty good.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: And like, oh yeah. And zombies, whatever. But mostly I
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: was just like, huh? Okay. So the train cars and
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: you can go from one car to the other, but yeah,
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: And then, oh, you can lock this one. So, like,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: I was so fascinated by the train system.
- 1:52:37Speaker 3: You're like, man, you know, I think this is good.
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: That would be great. It's just a documentary about the
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: train system.
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I really just want to take a tour of Korea.
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: All right, maybe not right now.
- 1:52:49Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: But just go on riding the rails in Korea somewhere.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: Would you like to come with me on this journey
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: and be a Korean hobo?
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: Yeah. Hell yeah.
- 1:53:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:53:04Speaker 12: The, uh, uh, the, that is such a funny thing
- 1:53:09Speaker 12: to like, uh, fixate on train to Busan is the, uh, the,
- 1:53:13Speaker 12: how it's made, uh, perspective, you know, it is one
- 1:53:17Speaker 12: of those, like.
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: You realize we all kind of have the same things,
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: but like how, um, they start to veer a little
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: differently depending on what what country you're in so when
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: you watch a movie that's like completely immersed in this
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: other culture like it was same thing with like Parasite
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: it was just like this this like working class version
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: of this family was like so fascinating like it didn't
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: even matter what other genres it spilled over into like
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: I was on board just watching them kind of scrap
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: and try to stay alive and where they were living
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: and like I was equally as fascinated by that and
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: the flip side of that coin. Like they also have
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: these super rich families, you know, it's like, just like
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: our dumb country, like way too wealthy people that like
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: don't even have a clue. These people exist out in
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: the world. So same thing with that. These people are
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: taking the train to work and here we are at
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: the train. Like, so it is like, I'm always just
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: kind of like that. That is, as we know, I
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: don't like to read. So me venturing into other foreign
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: films is, you know, it's a fight, but yeah, that's,
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: that's the part that I kind of, I'm always fascinated
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: with no matter what the genre is just kind of
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: this little snapshot at this other culture. And, and from
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: a point that they're very comfortable, like from their side
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: of it. So it's not like a, documentary where we're
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: looking at it from our dumb american view like we're
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: kind of getting it from the filmmaker who's lived in
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: this world yeah.
- 1:54:42Speaker 3: So very important very important for who's telling the story
- 1:54:46Speaker 3: and uh yeah that movie is i i agree it's
- 1:54:51Speaker 3: it's fascinating and it's like where you go you stay
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: away from it for so long because who wants to
- 1:54:58Speaker 3: watch another zombie movie But I wasn't.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: Even sure that's what like, again, I knew it by title.
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: And then I was like, is that the one like
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: I started questioning? I was like, is that the one
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: that's also a zombie movie? Or was it something else? Like,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: I hadn't really heard enough about it to even know
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: why I kept hearing that title. And then I was like,
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: I checked like the week before I went, Oh, yeah,
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: I think it is. All right, maybe again, I kind
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: of then had that another zombie movie. but right because
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: technically i did watch another one recently so okay okay
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: but well we can finish on this one so yeah
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: i i'm assuming you you've seen the the train i.
- 1:55:34Speaker 3: I did i did i did i took the train
- 1:55:36Speaker 3: to busan as well and uh it's a ride worth
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: taking what is it what is the from from the
- 1:55:44Speaker 3: make speed look like a ride to grandma's house that
- 1:55:47Speaker 3: was the uh Isn't that the professional?
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: It's sad that I know a tagline from a movie
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: from 20 years ago.
- 1:55:55Speaker 3: Gene Shalit. It was on the back of the VHS box.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: I think they put that one in the trailer.
- 1:56:04Speaker 3: Oh, did they?
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: It might have been such an amazing thing that they, yeah,
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: like slapped it up on the screen in the trailer.
- 1:56:11Speaker 3: That was the greatest. Makes me look like I drained it. Yeah. Anyway. So, yeah. Great.
- 1:56:18Speaker 3: It's so sad. So, yeah. Train to Busan, great movie.
- 1:56:26Speaker 3: Your takeaway is just the zombies are terrifying. The way
- 1:56:30Speaker 3: they move is terrifying. That fluid dynamics is terrifying. The
- 1:56:34Speaker 3: way they seem possessed when they're raising back up, it's
- 1:56:38Speaker 3: almost just like a biological possession that they're not even
- 1:56:42Speaker 3: in control of is fascinating. But the zombie stuff aside,
- 1:56:47Speaker 3: you've got interesting characters. that you relate to and that
- 1:56:52Speaker 3: have personal stakes in. And so like anything, it's about
- 1:56:57Speaker 3: the story and it's about the characters and you hang,
- 1:57:01Speaker 3: that movie hangs on them and their performances and the
- 1:57:05Speaker 3: sacrifices that the dad is making to get this girl
- 1:57:08Speaker 3: to safety. So yeah, What else do you need? That's
- 1:57:11Speaker 3: what you need from a movie. You need, you know,
- 1:57:13Speaker 3: I used to go like, go like, nah, you just
- 1:57:16Speaker 3: need Tom Savini decapitating people. That's what you need in
- 1:57:20Speaker 3: a movie.
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: That is your criteria for most things. That's also for
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: like a good lunch. you know, a trip, a trip
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: to the store, you know, just everything in your life
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: involves somehow decapitating people and maybe Tom Savini coming over.
- 1:57:35Speaker 3: Right. Right. And so, so, so you go like, you
- 1:57:38Speaker 3: go like, critics don't know what they're talking about. It's
- 1:57:40Speaker 3: not about characters. It's not about story. It's about how
- 1:57:42Speaker 3: big the thing blew up and how gross the kills were. Nowadays,
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: you know, you can tell within five minutes that this
- 1:57:51Speaker 3: number And, you know, I just don't have the patience.
- 1:57:57Speaker 3: I can't enter a movie unless, you know, I've got
- 1:58:02Speaker 3: something I can, I mean, pure spectacle is one thing,
- 1:58:05Speaker 3: but for the most part, this movie has such good
- 1:58:08Speaker 3: human dynamic to it. that, you know, it just makes
- 1:58:11Speaker 3: everything better. And the ending is heartbreaking.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: That now this is before I watched it, I'd actually,
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: the reason I heard it mentioned, I heard somebody talking
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: about it and the thing that they brought up and
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: I wanted to see, cause then I went in kind
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: of knowing this was at least something somebody else had
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: found and, So you, as a father, it is the
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: way that they were phrasing it was this weird undercurrent
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: within that movie that is like essentially the man's role
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: to suffer and or potentially sacrifice himself. Maybe not the
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: way the movie does, but like just the way the
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: family dynamic goes is that the man is supposed to,
- 1:58:54Speaker 1: as his role, like... he has to just be like,
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: take care of business at all expense to take care
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: of the family. Even if it means not taking care
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: of your child, essentially, or not paying attention or not
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: being part of your child's life. Or like there is
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: kind of, if you want to read into it, there's
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: definitely this aspect. Cause it's even when he's talking to
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: the other guy about business and like, it's kind of like,
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: what are you going to do? That's our job. Like it's,
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: it's kind of got that vibe and, And then ending
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: the way it does, you're like, oh, yeah, I mean,
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: it also follows through with that.
- 1:59:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah, you can see that. I think,
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: I mean, any parent probably feels that way. You know,
- 1:59:37Speaker 3: I think I think women feel like, you know, they
- 1:59:42Speaker 3: lose their identity to parenthood and they fight to. regain,
- 1:59:48Speaker 3: you know, who they are after the kids are no
- 1:59:52Speaker 3: longer needed, you know, or no longer need them. I think,
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: I think parents, I think dads can feel like, you know,
- 1:59:59Speaker 3: a meal ticket or like they're the provider. But I think,
- 2:00:03Speaker 3: I think guys, I don't, I didn't, I, maybe that's a,
- 2:00:08Speaker 3: maybe it was a Korean thing. Cause you know, I
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: mean like the culture is like, so, I mean, as
- 2:00:13Speaker 3: you saw on parasite, it's just like, so, you know,
- 2:00:16Speaker 3: trying to, you know, it's just like workaholic, you know,
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: kind of culture, you know, and so and I know that,
- 2:00:25Speaker 3: you know, just personally, you do feel like you miss
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: out on certain aspects of your kids life, you know,
- 2:00:32Speaker 3: if you're like working a lot and stuff like that.
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: But also, you know, you know, just, you know, I
- 2:00:39Speaker 3: heard like one person say like, Hey, dads don't count.
- 2:00:41Speaker 3: You know, it's like, it's like, you know, you know,
- 2:00:45Speaker 3: this is wife.
- 2:00:46Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:00:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Shut up.
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: You don't have a say.
- 2:00:49Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:00:49Speaker 3: That don't count, you know, and everything. And, uh, but
- 2:00:52Speaker 3: you know what, as a dad, you know, mothers are
- 2:00:57Speaker 3: to be, I guess, in this culture, like Mother's Day
- 2:01:00Speaker 3: is coming up. Mother's Day, you give flowers to your mom,
- 2:01:04Speaker 3: you take your mom to an expensive brunch. I don't
- 2:01:06Speaker 3: know what you do this year. I guess you fight
- 2:01:09Speaker 3: zombies with your mom. I don't know. Here's a plant.
- 2:01:12Speaker 3: That's right. Here's a plant. I'm giving it to you.
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: With a really long stick. Don't touch it for two
- 2:01:17Speaker 1: and a half days.
- 2:01:18Speaker 3: That's right. Here's a $ 30 eggs and bacon plate. I
- 2:01:23Speaker 3: don't know. Whatever you do, mothers are to be adored
- 2:01:29Speaker 3: and honored and stuff like that. Dads, really, for Father's Day,
- 2:01:34Speaker 3: as a father, I just want to be left alone.
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of moms have that too.
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: Maybe it depends on the arc in the momhood.
- 2:01:43Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, sure. Absolutely. I mean, as a dad, I
- 2:01:47Speaker 3: just want my kids to be functional. And so if
- 2:01:51Speaker 3: they're not calling me, or like even with Sarah, not
- 2:01:56Speaker 3: being as, you know, attached to going through her teenagerhood,
- 2:01:59Speaker 3: if she's functional, that's what I care about. So if
- 2:02:02Speaker 3: they're not coming around, they're not, I'm going like, good.
- 2:02:05Speaker 3: I mean, that means, that means, Not, not that I know.
- 2:02:08Speaker 8: It's not that I don't see it as like, I mean, I,
- 2:02:15Speaker 8: that kind of like, I'm going like good that they're
- 2:02:18Speaker 8: pushing off good that they're standing on two feet.
- 2:02:20Speaker 3: Excellent. If I'm not hearing it from them, that means
- 2:02:23Speaker 3: they're not in trouble, you know, and everything. So, um,
- 2:02:27Speaker 3: but like the dad sacrificing I mean I think that
- 2:02:31Speaker 3: was like I think that's a universal parent thing and
- 2:02:33Speaker 3: I don't think that was like seen as a as
- 2:02:35Speaker 3: like a bad thing in that movie I think anybody
- 2:02:39Speaker 3: with somebody close you know it doesn't have to be
- 2:02:42Speaker 3: a parent even anybody who has like anybody that they
- 2:02:46Speaker 3: are feel that much connection with would it's not it
- 2:02:53Speaker 3: would be a harder sacrifice to not make those decisions. Yeah.
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: I feel like the ending isn't so much about that.
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: It is more of a, just, you know, this is
- 2:03:02Speaker 1: what you do kind of a thing, but, but yeah,
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: I think it was more the earliest, the way it
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: was originally that I heard it when I heard about
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: it too, which led me to the movie. It was
- 2:03:11Speaker 1: just like, maybe more of a, again, back to the
- 2:03:15Speaker 1: way that that society works, maybe that country, maybe just
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: the part of the world. And then also maybe just
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: the dynamic of men versus women, like the way that they,
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: assigned things to themselves as like, oh, I have to
- 2:03:29Speaker 1: do this because I'm the man and this is what
- 2:03:31Speaker 1: I'm supposed to do. So maybe that doesn't even differ
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: by country. Maybe that's just a weird gender thing that's
- 2:03:38Speaker 1: programmed into guys from day one. All of these are
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: just kind of options. I guess it depends on how
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: you want to look at it or how you want
- 2:03:46Speaker 1: to follow a thread that runs through the movie that
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: maybe you don't pay attention to that. You're busy looking
- 2:03:51Speaker 1: at zombies, but it's kind of there if you want
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: to look for it. Absolutely.
- 2:03:56Speaker 3: I think it's also like maybe where you are in
- 2:03:58Speaker 3: your life when you see it, how much that would
- 2:04:00Speaker 3: come up or not. You know, I think if you're
- 2:04:02Speaker 3: working 70 hours a week and you never see your
- 2:04:06Speaker 3: kids and you feel like, you know, worn down.
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: God, I pray for zombies to come take me away. Yeah.
- 2:04:12Speaker 3: And then you're going like, yeah, you might see that
- 2:04:14Speaker 3: ending to go like, man, I got off lucky. Thank God.
- 2:04:17Speaker 7: Deliverance.
- 2:04:19Speaker 3: I could just, I could just like, you know, do
- 2:04:21Speaker 3: some cardio and eat all day. You know, that's fantastic. Um,
- 2:04:26Speaker 3: you know, no, I think that movie is great. I mean,
- 2:04:28Speaker 3: and then, you know, they start talking about sequels and
- 2:04:30Speaker 3: stuff and I go on like, no, don't do it.
- 2:04:35Speaker 3: You got lucky. You got lucky. You do that. You
- 2:04:38Speaker 3: get the same people in the same room together. It
- 2:04:41Speaker 3: ain't going to happen again.
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: You know, you, Sometimes, I mean, to write a good screenplay,
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: sometimes it really does. Like the only way it comes
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: together is to put that finishing move on and like,
- 2:04:54Speaker 1: you nail it, you stick the landing and then you're done.
- 2:04:57Speaker 1: You're like, okay, take your bows. You're off there. And like,
- 2:05:00Speaker 1: so to then try to turn around and come back.
- 2:05:02Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: Totally undercuts the thing that you did that made the
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: last movie work. Like, so there's a lot of movies
- 2:05:08Speaker 1: I question. I'm like, well, but now coming, like the
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: whole arc of this character was about this ending. And
- 2:05:14Speaker 1: now if you go, okay, well nevermind that ending part,
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: pretend like that didn't happen. We're going to go on
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: with their story. And like some characters that it lends
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: itself to that. And then others, like the way that
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: the movie ends kind of needs to cap it off
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: and be done. And yeah, they just, financial in comes
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: into it and be like no we can make more
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: money let's do more like so right right it's it's
- 2:05:36Speaker 1: an argument to be made on both sides i guess
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: i mean.
- 2:05:39Speaker 3: I mean i just we just don't have to watch
- 2:05:41Speaker 3: it you know and everything but i mean it's just
- 2:05:43Speaker 3: like it's like i mean it's such as we're saying
- 2:05:45Speaker 3: you know it's such a crap shoot to get your
- 2:05:46Speaker 3: movie out there and seen and then for it to
- 2:05:48Speaker 3: be super early you know you know to be a
- 2:05:51Speaker 3: hit you know it's like i mean it's like holy
- 2:05:53Speaker 3: cow you know it's like you know the all the
- 2:05:55Speaker 3: things lined up and and you know we have been
- 2:05:59Speaker 3: tapped on the shoulder by God and we've got this
- 2:06:02Speaker 3: successful movie.
- 2:06:03Speaker 5: I mean.
- 2:06:04Speaker 3: you've pretty much just got to make a sequel. Cause
- 2:06:07Speaker 3: I mean, it, it, you go like, it doesn't have
- 2:06:09Speaker 3: to have art. This is not artistic integrity anymore. This
- 2:06:12Speaker 3: is about, I've got now people that keep the meeting,
- 2:06:16Speaker 3: you know?
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: And, I get it.
- 2:06:17Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:06:18Speaker 1: It's like from the financial, from the professional end, I
- 2:06:21Speaker 1: get it. Like again, how often does something work? You've
- 2:06:24Speaker 1: got a successful brand now that you can turn around
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: and make at least one more, if not a couple
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: more movies with that name attached to it and still
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: make money.
- 2:06:33Speaker 3: Like, I get it.
- 2:06:34Speaker 1: Artistically, I don't necessarily agree a lot of the time,
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: but like financially, business wise, I get it.
- 2:06:41Speaker 3: I mean, if the director has got able to move
- 2:06:43Speaker 3: on and do other projects, I mean, if he's got
- 2:06:45Speaker 3: more story to tell, great. But I mean, you know, just.
- 2:06:48Speaker 3: If you can move on, if you use that cloud
- 2:06:50Speaker 3: to do another original story and then like let the
- 2:06:53Speaker 3: editor like direct the new one, let everybody move up one,
- 2:06:57Speaker 3: you know, that's great.
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: That's the best option is when you can just like
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: stick around as executive producer. So you can still get
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: money and funding off of your idea, but you've, firsthand
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: aren't responsible anymore. You shoot it, you edit it, you
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: direct it. I'll be over here working on a whole
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: new project, but still getting money from your project over
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: here to pay for my better project on That's right.
- 2:07:21Speaker 1: That's the best option.
- 2:07:22Speaker 3: Dude, make it, make it, do it, you know, and everything,
- 2:07:25Speaker 3: you know, just as long as you're coming up other people.
- 2:07:27Speaker 3: I mean, people who got involved in it got a
- 2:07:29Speaker 3: leg up and they're able to keep doing some original stuff,
- 2:07:32Speaker 3: but man, just crank those sequels out, man. I don't
- 2:07:34Speaker 3: have to watch them. Like I've never seen the descent
- 2:07:36Speaker 3: sequel or the thing sequel or anything like that. I
- 2:07:39Speaker 3: can just like, say, say like, I understand why they
- 2:07:42Speaker 3: made it, but it's that, that, or you know even
- 2:07:46Speaker 3: like ridiculously like the crank sequel.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: Hey we all needed a crank too in our lives.
- 2:07:54Speaker 3: The crank too I'm just going like this may be
- 2:07:56Speaker 3: like the same exact movie and it may be great
- 2:07:59Speaker 3: but I mean there's something about that last uh, 18
- 2:08:03Speaker 3: frames of crank, uh, one that you just go like,
- 2:08:07Speaker 3: that's it. You, you have just made the perfect ending
- 2:08:10Speaker 3: to a movie. And so, so, you know, you make
- 2:08:13Speaker 3: it a sequel is just like, uh, I get it
- 2:08:15Speaker 3: if you can make some money off of it. Uh,
- 2:08:18Speaker 3: but I, you just, you just got to live in
- 2:08:20Speaker 3: a world where you pretend there are no, uh, there
- 2:08:23Speaker 3: are no sequels or, uh, prequels or, uh, you know,
- 2:08:28Speaker 3: Disney reboot.
- 2:08:31Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm looking forward to all those things. It depends
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: on the project. It's a case by case basis.
- 2:08:38Speaker 3: That's true. Sometimes I do take days off work just
- 2:08:41Speaker 3: so I can go see one of these Disney reboots, but, um,
- 2:08:45Speaker 3: always kind of, you know, whatever. So you saw a
- 2:08:49Speaker 3: train to Busan, um, Awesome. Uh, what, what, uh, what else.
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: Have the, well, the other tie in, well, probably more
- 2:08:58Speaker 1: of a tie in than I realized, uh, along those lines.
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: I also, and again, I don't think I realized, like I,
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: I knew it by title. We talked about it years
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: before on the show, but I hadn't watched it since
- 2:09:11Speaker 1: I'd never watched it. So I got around to the
- 2:09:13Speaker 1: girl with all the gifts.
- 2:09:14Speaker 5: Oh, boom.
- 2:09:16Speaker 3: That is perfect because I was, while you were talking
- 2:09:19Speaker 3: about this on, I was thinking, um, thinking, what's that
- 2:09:21Speaker 3: zombie movie I just saw?
- 2:09:23Speaker 1: So did you recently watch it?
- 2:09:25Speaker 3: A Girl with All the Gifts. Yes, I did. Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:09:29Speaker 3: You go.
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: Well i think it's one of those like in the
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: beginning i'm like okay this is just kind of a
- 2:09:34Speaker 1: cool take on a zombie movie it's only by the
- 2:09:36Speaker 1: time you get to that second half where it's like
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: oh this is really weird to watch right now yeah
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: where we're trying to get by the end we're like
- 2:09:46Speaker 1: and as soon as this virus goes airborne the entire
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: planet's going to destroy itself i'm like oh oh Yeah,
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: I don't know if I like this movie anymore. And
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: it's not the movie's fault. We hit a whole new level.
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: But that's my takeaway. And I guess not the spoilers
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: for the girl with all the gifts. But it almost
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: has this take on the whole thing, which is like,
- 2:10:13Speaker 1: you know, maybe it's time to call it. Maybe you've
- 2:10:16Speaker 1: had your run. And you did some nice things along
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: the way, but it's time for somebody else to step up.
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: And like, sometimes I look at the nonsense that's going
- 2:10:27Speaker 1: on in the world and I'm like, I could see
- 2:10:29Speaker 1: if some higher power, if I believed in any of them,
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: I don't know what I do. But like, again, if
- 2:10:34Speaker 1: somewhere on there, they're like, you know what? Good run humans,
- 2:10:37Speaker 1: but it's time to clear the board. Roaches, it's finally
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: your day. Let's go. Step up because these guys have
- 2:10:46Speaker 1: outlived their usefulness. So there was a weird aspect to
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: the end of it that I was like mostly just
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: focusing on that, but it's a good movie. And I, I, yeah,
- 2:10:56Speaker 1: I definitely enjoyed it. And I don't know that anything
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: else is groundbreaking other than the way that it takes
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: that ending. But it's an interesting look at like the
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: lockdown that it starts in of like already knee deep
- 2:11:11Speaker 1: into this problem where, you know, we've already had like,
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: eight years of them dealing with those more or less
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: or longer really. So it's, yeah, it's, it's definitely an
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: interesting place to start the movie.
- 2:11:23Speaker 3: Absolutely. Yeah. I thought I, I really was surprised at
- 2:11:29Speaker 3: how much I enjoyed it. And I, yeah, I think
- 2:11:34Speaker 3: there are definitely zombie tropes all over the place that
- 2:11:37Speaker 3: you're going through, but I mean, there were just certain,
- 2:11:41Speaker 3: scenes and ideas in the movie and some of the stuff,
- 2:11:45Speaker 3: the tropes that you've seen, you, you see them again here,
- 2:11:47Speaker 3: but they were just so well done that we'll just like,
- 2:11:53Speaker 3: you know, just a roll call. It was good science
- 2:11:58Speaker 3: fiction of a classroom, the image of a classroom where
- 2:12:02Speaker 3: all the students are strapped to chairs.
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: You know yeah that's definitely a post-apocalyptic world there yeah
- 2:12:09Speaker 1: certainly weird science fiction if nothing else.
- 2:12:12Speaker 3: And again i think this movie like the sun it
- 2:12:16Speaker 3: is uh the movie you can carry get through it
- 2:12:21Speaker 3: and get involved with it and walk away and go
- 2:12:23Speaker 3: like that's a good movie because the lead girl uh
- 2:12:26Speaker 3: character is so good and her.
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: I love jim arterton like i right Right. She's one
- 2:12:32Speaker 1: of those that like, she, she has everything that should
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: lead her to be Scarlett Johansson, but like, she just
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: didn't catch that same break. And like, she's, she's gorgeous.
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: Like she's really a great actress. Like she's picked some
- 2:12:47Speaker 1: interesting stuff over the years, but like, she's just not
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: like household name, but like, she's always solid as a,
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: as an actress.
- 2:12:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:12:56Speaker 3: Her, her performance was great. And her interaction with the
- 2:12:59Speaker 3: little girl was, And the little girl's character, both those
- 2:13:04Speaker 3: two are so perfect in that movie and their relationship
- 2:13:08Speaker 3: is so perfect that I, I, I just thought that
- 2:13:11Speaker 3: that keen end of that dynamic of training teacher and
- 2:13:18Speaker 3: the little kid, just how kids, this is all normal
- 2:13:22Speaker 3: for them.
- 2:13:23Speaker 1: This is their, I mean, this girl was raised from
- 2:13:26Speaker 1: birth in this world, so she can't see it as weird.
- 2:13:29Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, one of the best scenes is just
- 2:13:32Speaker 3: when the teacher reaches out and just touches her head
- 2:13:35Speaker 3: because she's so impressed by her writing, you know, and
- 2:13:39Speaker 3: and that that scene and then the you go like, ah,
- 2:13:44Speaker 3: this movie, this movie is operating on a different level.
- 2:13:47Speaker 3: This movie actually is trying to tell a story and
- 2:13:50Speaker 3: is actually dealing with something that is real. And it's
- 2:13:55Speaker 3: not just like spinning its wheels to get to the, the,
- 2:13:59Speaker 3: the blood and guts set piece, you know, the scenes,
- 2:14:02Speaker 3: the scenes where things are not horrific are just as
- 2:14:05Speaker 3: important as the scenes where there is some horrific stuff
- 2:14:08Speaker 3: going on, you know, which, which is not always, which
- 2:14:11Speaker 3: is not the case. And you know, Brian, you can
- 2:14:13Speaker 3: turn on a movie and you can sort of tell
- 2:14:15Speaker 3: within 10 minutes what, what level, this movie is going
- 2:14:18Speaker 3: to play on. And sometimes you're good with that level.
- 2:14:20Speaker 3: And sometimes you're going like, I can't sit and watch
- 2:14:22Speaker 3: another shitty horror movie, you know?
- 2:14:24Speaker 1: Well, and it has this extra little interesting thing that
- 2:14:28Speaker 1: we haven't seen before, because the world that we're jumping
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: into that again, it's like a decade in on the
- 2:14:33Speaker 1: zombie outbreak, more or less that like, that is not
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: that far from something like the walking dead. Like that's
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: one of the few other worlds that we've lived in
- 2:14:42Speaker 1: for a long time. That's dealt with this zombie issue.
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: But yeah, we've got this new addition that we've got
- 2:14:48Speaker 1: these children and they're born kind of differently. So we've
- 2:14:53Speaker 1: got this one, like some part of the story veering
- 2:14:56Speaker 1: off into new territory. So the fact that we focused
- 2:14:59Speaker 1: in on that, because other than that, it could just
- 2:15:01Speaker 1: be similar to other zombie movies. That's the aspect that
- 2:15:05Speaker 1: kind of gives this such a different take that even
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: in the world, that's kind of familiar zombie wise. It's like,
- 2:15:12Speaker 1: it's got this new spin on it.
- 2:15:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. And it, Absolutely. And yeah, and it doesn't, yeah,
- 2:15:18Speaker 3: it doesn't feel like just like a very special episode
- 2:15:22Speaker 3: of walking dead, you know, where we're just covering the
- 2:15:24Speaker 3: same ground.
- 2:15:25Speaker 1: Which I would watch going to the bike shop. Daryl's
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: got to get his bike worked on. He's going to
- 2:15:35Speaker 1: the bike shop. Lord help us.
- 2:15:40Speaker 3: Lord help us. Lord help us. What was that one
- 2:15:42Speaker 3: Family Ties episode where it was kind of like experimental
- 2:15:45Speaker 3: theater or something?
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: The one where, the only difficult part with that one
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: is the whole thing hinges on this relationship with this friend,
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: but it's this friend we've never seen before. And we
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: live with this family for a season or two already.
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: But yeah, it's Alex's friend dies and he goes through,
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: like it's all taking place in his mind essentially. And
- 2:16:06Speaker 1: it's like a black box theater version of, Alex dealing
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: with grief and right.
- 2:16:11Speaker 7: Oh yeah.
- 2:16:12Speaker 1: I actually thought that was a pretty cool episode.
- 2:16:14Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:16:15Speaker 1: As my very special brain remembers it.
- 2:16:17Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. So yeah, it wasn't Skippy that died. So,
- 2:16:21Speaker 3: you know, you're like on who, you know, Skippy. Yeah.
- 2:16:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:16:24Speaker 3: So girl with the gifts, you got, you got that
- 2:16:27Speaker 3: relationship and, and it's also very, and maybe the seed
- 2:16:32Speaker 3: of this got planted. If you watch the, the horror, nor,
- 2:16:39Speaker 3: documentary that's on the Shudder streaming service. They mentioned it
- 2:16:44Speaker 3: in GIFs, but they mentioned GIFs real quick. It's just
- 2:16:48Speaker 3: interesting that this movie is very pro-girl and pro-woman and
- 2:16:54Speaker 3: pro- girl of color, but not in a preachy way
- 2:17:01Speaker 3: like a Marvel movie would be. Not like wearing it
- 2:17:05Speaker 3: on their sleeve, like, look how inclusive and beating your
- 2:17:11Speaker 3: head over the thing. It's like, go out there and
- 2:17:13Speaker 3: do anything. This movie is very organic in the storytelling,
- 2:17:19Speaker 3: so it doesn't feel like it's ever preaching to you.
- 2:17:21Speaker 3: It's just like seeing her character come into power and
- 2:17:28Speaker 3: really going to be running the show by the end
- 2:17:30Speaker 3: of the movie.
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: I mean, basically all your useful characters are female. Like
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: there are men, but they're just kind of there to
- 2:17:38Speaker 1: be grunts and do some, you know, go be a
- 2:17:40Speaker 1: soldier for a minute. But the other thing, the entire movie,
- 2:17:43Speaker 1: I just sat there going, how the hell did they
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: get Glenn Close in this like low budget kind of
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: a horror movie?
- 2:17:49Speaker 4: Like.
- 2:17:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: Cause I thought maybe it was just going to be
- 2:17:52Speaker 1: that one scene at the beginning. I'm like, well, she
- 2:17:54Speaker 1: just did somebody a favor and show it. But I
- 2:17:56Speaker 1: was like, shit, she's in the whole movie. Like how did,
- 2:17:58Speaker 1: how did you talk Glenn Close into doing this? Cause
- 2:18:00Speaker 1: she's still like an Oscar contender most years when she
- 2:18:03Speaker 1: bothers to make a movie. So that was, that was impressive.
- 2:18:07Speaker 1: But like, that's what I'm saying. Like there's three generations
- 2:18:09Speaker 1: of women here and all of them are super smart
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: and talented and like skilled and like, and above and
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: beyond all the men in this movie. So yeah, it
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: is interesting. Like all of our three main females in
- 2:18:23Speaker 1: this are kind of running the show. in different versions
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: and different generations. Like, yeah.
- 2:18:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:18:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:18:30Speaker 3: It was kind of like, it was kind of like
- 2:18:31Speaker 3: Halloween in that way where, you know, the women characters
- 2:18:35Speaker 3: are so interesting and the guy characters are so stupid.
- 2:18:42Speaker 1: Like still doing dumb horror movie things like, sure, take
- 2:18:45Speaker 1: your backpack off and your radio to climb into this
- 2:18:49Speaker 1: place that might be crawling with zombies. Good idea, buddy.
- 2:18:53Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:18:53Speaker 3: That's one of those going like, okay, this movie ran
- 2:18:56Speaker 3: out of ideas.
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: Well, no, at that point you're like, okay, it's still
- 2:18:59Speaker 1: a horror movie. People have to make dumb decisions for
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: it to be a horror movie.
- 2:19:04Speaker 3: Yeah. The way, the way Glenn Close dies is, oh,
- 2:19:07Speaker 3: it's spoiler, whatever. You know, it's kind of like, oh,
- 2:19:12Speaker 3: we got to wrap this up. You're kind of feeling
- 2:19:14Speaker 3: them going like, hey, we got to, we got to
- 2:19:15Speaker 3: get this done. You know?
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: Oh, I would like that dynamic though. Everything that goes
- 2:19:19Speaker 1: on in the end result there. I think the setup
- 2:19:22Speaker 1: and the way that she pitches it kind of selfishly,
- 2:19:26Speaker 1: but selfishly for humanity essentially, but still like the way
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: she's pitching it, like is a really interesting little game.
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: And then like the way that it pans out, I'm like, no,
- 2:19:37Speaker 1: I really liked the much bigger scope that the writers
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: had that were just like, yeah, we could end it
- 2:19:42Speaker 1: that conventional way that, that again, so like Glenn Close
- 2:19:47Speaker 1: is proposing more or less, but we kind of took
- 2:19:50Speaker 1: a step back and went, well, what if that wasn't
- 2:19:53Speaker 1: the end? What if this is the way we went?
- 2:19:56Speaker 1: So yeah, I really like the dynamic that it kind
- 2:19:59Speaker 1: of takes at the end there.
- 2:20:00Speaker 3: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:20:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:20:02Speaker 3: No, I just heard one. Oh, what I can do here.
- 2:20:07Speaker 3: I just heard one of my earbuds say like, I
- 2:20:09Speaker 3: might be getting a little low on battery here, but
- 2:20:11Speaker 3: let me just put this.
- 2:20:12Speaker 1: It's about, it's probably time we should wrap things up anyway.
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: We can take that as a hint from the universe.
- 2:20:19Speaker 13: Okay.
- 2:20:19Speaker 3: Okay. Okay.
- 2:20:21Speaker 7: Yep. Yep.
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:20:21Speaker 1: Yep.
- 2:20:22Speaker 3: Oh, I guess.
- 2:20:22Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:20:22Speaker 3: It's been two and a half hours. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.
- 2:20:31Speaker 1: What's your wrap up on. on I guess the girl
- 2:20:33Speaker 1: with all the gifts and life as a whole, as
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: we ourselves are about to be overtaken as we're as
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: humanity is cracking the pods on the sidewalk right now.
- 2:20:43Speaker 1: See if we can bust this thing open. What is
- 2:20:47Speaker 1: your take on things as we round out?
- 2:20:50Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:20:50Speaker 3: Girl, girl of all the gifts. You got it. Everybody's
- 2:20:53Speaker 3: got to watch that movie. That has such good, good
- 2:20:56Speaker 3: human dynamic, but it's also just got great horror movie
- 2:20:59Speaker 3: scenes in it. So people should discover that one. And,
- 2:21:04Speaker 3: but for the, for life in quarantine, I mean, just,
- 2:21:08Speaker 3: I'm lucky. right now that I've been able to weather
- 2:21:11Speaker 3: it just fine. And, you know, of course, your heart
- 2:21:16Speaker 3: goes out to people who are struggling and you hear
- 2:21:18Speaker 3: about people who are stuck at home and, you know,
- 2:21:20Speaker 3: the divorce rates going up and, you know, you know,
- 2:21:24Speaker 3: the peril, you know, some, some families hold together because
- 2:21:28Speaker 3: they never see each other, you know? And so it's,
- 2:21:32Speaker 3: it's sad that, you know, hopefully people will be able
- 2:21:35Speaker 3: to get through this and be okay and, And, um,
- 2:21:38Speaker 3: I think that for me though, I mean, you know, being,
- 2:21:44Speaker 3: being locked at home is like now, now for me
- 2:21:47Speaker 3: to be a total social, uh, pariah is now my
- 2:21:50Speaker 3: civic duty. I mean, it's like the best thing ever.
- 2:21:53Speaker 3: So it's, it's for me, great. I'm, you know, people
- 2:21:58Speaker 3: are saying, oh, I'm so bored. I was like, I
- 2:21:59Speaker 3: haven't been bored one second. It's like, it's like everything.
- 2:22:03Speaker 3: It's like, I'm free of the pressures of having to
- 2:22:07Speaker 3: go out and, and mingle and be like, like pretend
- 2:22:10Speaker 3: to be a comfortable functioning member of society. So I'm like,
- 2:22:16Speaker 3: this is wonderful for me. And I could do this
- 2:22:20Speaker 3: all day. And, you know, if I'm able to work
- 2:22:22Speaker 3: from home, Uh, it's, uh, it's, I'm at a, um,
- 2:22:26Speaker 3: I understand that it's, uh, it's a rare, uh, thing.
- 2:22:30Speaker 3: And I, you know, uh, uh, I'm, I'm very lucky
- 2:22:34Speaker 3: that I can do that because I'm going like, man,
- 2:22:37Speaker 3: if I could just like now, uh, just talk to
- 2:22:41Speaker 3: everybody remotely. That'd be great. I mean, I've got my
- 2:22:44Speaker 3: five people, I've got my five core people, you know,
- 2:22:46Speaker 3: if I can just talk to everybody else remotely, this
- 2:22:47Speaker 3: will be.
- 2:22:48Speaker 1: I'm assuming I'm one of those five.
- 2:22:50Speaker 3: Yeah. Here we go.
- 2:22:52Speaker 1: You've thrown out one of the children for me.
- 2:22:54Speaker 3: Okay. I'll take it. The son pissed me off the
- 2:22:58Speaker 3: other day.
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: So, you know, he's got, he's got to, he's got
- 2:23:00Speaker 1: to get it where.
- 2:23:01Speaker 3: It goes way back in. Um, Yeah, yeah. So I
- 2:23:07Speaker 3: don't know, man, I've been, I've been fine with it.
- 2:23:10Speaker 3: And I think as long, you know, when we're able to,
- 2:23:16Speaker 3: because we're not seeing pictures of images of dead children,
- 2:23:20Speaker 3: you know, on the news every night, we're able to
- 2:23:22Speaker 3: kind of like go with this and say, like, okay,
- 2:23:24Speaker 3: let's all just be smart and cool. So it's not
- 2:23:26Speaker 3: like a, like a living, waking airborne nightmare, you know? So,
- 2:23:34Speaker 3: and it's not like 28 days later. And so we're,
- 2:23:39Speaker 3: we're able to like kind of have fun with it,
- 2:23:41Speaker 3: you know?
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: I mean, that's the thing. I mean, that's why like
- 2:23:46Speaker 1: I kind of tread lightly on each of these episodes
- 2:23:49Speaker 1: because I'm like, it's, it's when you're not in the
- 2:23:52Speaker 1: hard end of the deal and, It's just like an inconvenience,
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: but I'm like, people are losing loved ones out there.
- 2:23:59Speaker 1: A lot of people like, so like, I don't want
- 2:24:02Speaker 1: to make light of it too much, but at the
- 2:24:05Speaker 1: same time, it is a weird scenario. And that's why
- 2:24:07Speaker 1: I've kind of wanted to chronicle this nonsense that we're
- 2:24:11Speaker 1: all locked in now. Cause I'm just like, it's a
- 2:24:13Speaker 1: weird moment for everyone. Like it is no matter where
- 2:24:17Speaker 1: you are, you're affected by this in totally different ways.
- 2:24:20Speaker 1: But like everybody's life is, shifted a little in these
- 2:24:24Speaker 1: last several months in ways that we never imagined so
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: right it is kind of weird and like i i
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: want to at least have fun with it to some
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: extent that you know hang out and talk with your
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: friends that's what i want to do regardless so like
- 2:24:38Speaker 1: absolutely want to do that but at the same time
- 2:24:40Speaker 1: i don't want to so make light of it that
- 2:24:42Speaker 1: you know we there aren't people suffering because there are
- 2:24:45Speaker 1: a lot of people suffering yeah And just financially the
- 2:24:50Speaker 1: country is falling apart now. So it's like, you can't like,
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: you can't make light of the whole thing because like,
- 2:24:56Speaker 1: there's a lot of serious problems going on right now.
- 2:24:59Speaker 3: So no, no, the numbers this morning, I feel like
- 2:25:03Speaker 3: you can't, you just got to like count your blessings
- 2:25:05Speaker 3: because I mean the numbers this morning, the unemployment numbers
- 2:25:08Speaker 3: were so insane that you're, you're just you can't, I
- 2:25:13Speaker 3: feel like you can't make light of it. And it
- 2:25:15Speaker 3: is almost like it's, It is just like that. It
- 2:25:19Speaker 3: is like a it is like a wartime where, you know,
- 2:25:23Speaker 3: people are dying and people are always dying every day.
- 2:25:25Speaker 3: But now, you know, it's such a spike and you
- 2:25:28Speaker 3: hear like the the the level, the the the death
- 2:25:32Speaker 3: rate from last year versus this year. So it's like
- 2:25:35Speaker 3: this weird, weird anxiety in the back of your head.
- 2:25:39Speaker 3: You know, this weird thing we're going like we go
- 2:25:43Speaker 3: like we're good today. Let's hope we're good tomorrow. you know,
- 2:25:47Speaker 3: kind of thing.
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you definitely put it in war terminology
- 2:25:52Speaker 1: because in the beginning, the way they kept, like everybody
- 2:25:54Speaker 1: kept referring to it, like world war two, like this
- 2:25:56Speaker 1: is like, they're canceling things on our town here that
- 2:25:59Speaker 1: have not been called off since world war two. Like
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: that was the last reason we had this big to
- 2:26:05Speaker 1: call off events. So that was the first time. But
- 2:26:08Speaker 1: lately when the death toll went above the soldiers in Vietnam, um,
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: I was like, well, this is a war. It is
- 2:26:17Speaker 1: a different kind of a war. But I mean, we're
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: losing people at a war level now. And think of
- 2:26:23Speaker 1: how that's what I'm saying. Think about the impact that
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: something like Vietnam made on this country. We're at that
- 2:26:30Speaker 1: level now. So it's certainly a very different thing. But
- 2:26:34Speaker 1: I'm thinking about like, look how many weird Vietnam movies
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: we made. It's like the way that it affected culture
- 2:26:39Speaker 1: and then pop culture and then all of our lives.
- 2:26:42Speaker 1: trickle down, you know? So it's like thinking ahead of like,
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: assuming we come through this, like the weird ways it's gonna,
- 2:26:50Speaker 1: the sitcoms made about quarantine and like the, the movies
- 2:26:54Speaker 1: that come out of this, assuming we can, again, take
- 2:26:57Speaker 1: a lighter tone and like try to look forward and
- 2:27:00Speaker 1: be like, Oh, well this might just be a chapter
- 2:27:02Speaker 1: in our lives. And we'll look back on it through
- 2:27:05Speaker 1: the weird movies that they make about it later. Like
- 2:27:07Speaker 1: it is like, Hopefully, that's the lightest, the most upbeat
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: version you can be like is okay. We're going to
- 2:27:15Speaker 1: all be okay. We'll come out of this, the ones
- 2:27:18Speaker 1: who are lucky too, and we'll move on and this
- 2:27:21Speaker 1: will just be a chapter in our lives and we'll
- 2:27:23Speaker 1: make a dumb TV movie out of it or something.
- 2:27:26Speaker 1: That's sadly where it's headed maybe. Maybe that's the best
- 2:27:31Speaker 1: take we can have on it.
- 2:27:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm ready for this. goofy TV movie phase of
- 2:27:35Speaker 3: the process. You know, it's like you just see like
- 2:27:39Speaker 3: how you know, there's massive society just taken down in
- 2:27:44Speaker 3: an economy and all the people it's great. It's a
- 2:27:47Speaker 3: very humbling thing. It's like war of the world, you know,
- 2:27:49Speaker 3: it's just like with all the, their technological advances and
- 2:27:54Speaker 3: all their, their brains and their intelligence. I mean, the, the,
- 2:27:58Speaker 3: the smallest thing is just, brought the economy to its
- 2:28:01Speaker 3: knees basically this invisible thing you know that and it's
- 2:28:07Speaker 3: amazing because it's like it's benign it doesn't care you
- 2:28:10Speaker 3: know where you're from or who you are or you
- 2:28:13Speaker 3: know what border you're on it's just it's just it's
- 2:28:15Speaker 3: got an agenda and it's doing it and it's what's
- 2:28:18Speaker 3: interesting is just watching the politicians try to put a
- 2:28:23Speaker 3: human face on it by saying that this person's fault
- 2:28:26Speaker 3: or that person's fault it's just like this was bound
- 2:28:28Speaker 3: to happen. It's happened before. It's no, it's, it's like,
- 2:28:33Speaker 3: I see it as like nobody's fault. It's just, we
- 2:28:36Speaker 3: share the world with viruses and these things are out there. And,
- 2:28:43Speaker 3: you know, we, we had a hundred year run, you know,
- 2:28:47Speaker 3: where we haven't had something like this. Now we've got
- 2:28:50Speaker 3: it again. We'll be stronger from it from the past.
- 2:28:53Speaker 3: I think there's a lot of good coming out of this,
- 2:28:55Speaker 3: but it's also like, uh, It's infuriating to see people
- 2:29:03Speaker 3: try to put a human face on it and say
- 2:29:07Speaker 3: it's this guy's fault.
- 2:29:08Speaker 1: Or worse, using it. I see a lot of ads
- 2:29:11Speaker 1: that are one party using it to the advantage of
- 2:29:15Speaker 1: to blame the other party or to put a spin
- 2:29:17Speaker 1: on it. And I'm just like, you're not helping anyone.
- 2:29:20Speaker 1: Stop trying to help yourself.
- 2:29:21Speaker 7: Right.
- 2:29:22Speaker 1: Again, my takeaway is I could care less about politics
- 2:29:25Speaker 1: because you're obviously doing everything wrong on every side. Everybody
- 2:29:29Speaker 1: involved is doing it wrong. But this is the takeaway
- 2:29:32Speaker 1: that surprised me because in the beginning, you can even hear,
- 2:29:36Speaker 1: as we started recording these, jokingly referring to this as
- 2:29:40Speaker 1: the road warrior status and like, are we fighting over
- 2:29:44Speaker 1: gasoline yet? Maybe. The thing that's come through that I've
- 2:29:49Speaker 1: been surprised with is the way politics again, banding together
- 2:29:53Speaker 1: is a weird way to phrase it since we're all
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: so separate, but the like emotional way that people are
- 2:30:00Speaker 1: kind of banding together, the surprising way that people are like,
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: we had like a weird, like a, a virtual food
- 2:30:07Speaker 1: drive here lately on the news. And like they surpassed
- 2:30:11Speaker 1: like people sitting at home that couldn't physically do anything.
- 2:30:15Speaker 1: We're still, even in this broke economy, like, funding to
- 2:30:19Speaker 1: give food to people that are struggling worse than they
- 2:30:22Speaker 1: are at this point. So like, I do see people
- 2:30:25Speaker 1: like kind of stepping up and really like going out
- 2:30:27Speaker 1: of their way to take care of each other more
- 2:30:30Speaker 1: so than even they realized they were willing to before
- 2:30:33Speaker 1: this set in. So it's, That's the only like hope
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: kind of coming through this is that, you know, we
- 2:30:40Speaker 1: are seeing a better side. Like I don't see people
- 2:30:42Speaker 1: in the fighting in the streets yet, where really, if
- 2:30:45Speaker 1: you would have asked me last year, if this would
- 2:30:47Speaker 1: have unfolded the way it had, would we be at
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: each other's throats by now? And I probably would have
- 2:30:53Speaker 1: thought we would. So the fact that we've made it
- 2:30:55Speaker 1: this long and we're, we're starting to see people work
- 2:30:57Speaker 1: together on things, you know, not politicians, but actual real
- 2:31:02Speaker 1: people that are out in the world are trying to
- 2:31:04Speaker 1: help each other and like trying to make the best
- 2:31:06Speaker 1: of this situation. And that is like a surprising level
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: to me that like, I'm happy that there's still this
- 2:31:14Speaker 1: level of humanity out there that I, I wasn't sure
- 2:31:17Speaker 1: I could count on, but it's coming through on occasion.
- 2:31:20Speaker 1: So I'll take that. Yeah.
- 2:31:23Speaker 3: What you're saying is very true. I think it's been
- 2:31:26Speaker 3: a humbling experience. I think it's shown people how vulnerable
- 2:31:29Speaker 3: we all are to these unstoppable tides of life. I
- 2:31:36Speaker 3: think it's not kick the stool out from people and
- 2:31:42Speaker 3: pull the chair out from under them. They say, look,
- 2:31:47Speaker 3: I'm no different than my neighbor who's being the we
- 2:31:52Speaker 3: are all you know, we could all be affected by
- 2:31:55Speaker 3: this at any moment and we need to pull together.
- 2:31:58Speaker 3: And I had the most amazing conversation with a pharmacist
- 2:32:03Speaker 3: the other day. You know, I don't like to leave
- 2:32:05Speaker 3: the house and I don't like to, and if I
- 2:32:08Speaker 3: am out, I am like, you know, low level anxiety
- 2:32:13Speaker 3: all the time. So being, but I find being out
- 2:32:20Speaker 3: and wearing a mask is, you actually feel like, Oh,
- 2:32:24Speaker 3: they can't really see me. So it's okay to open
- 2:32:27Speaker 3: up a little bit, you know? And, um, it's kind
- 2:32:31Speaker 3: of like, man, it's like, I might just start walking
- 2:32:32Speaker 3: around with like a Don post. I mean, um, you know,
- 2:32:36Speaker 3: when this is over, this might be a new look
- 2:32:37Speaker 3: for me. Um, but, uh, but yeah, so I go
- 2:32:41Speaker 3: to the pharmacist and, uh, you know, it wasn't like
- 2:32:44Speaker 3: the same chaos. I mean, they, they stagger everybody when
- 2:32:47Speaker 3: they can go in and stuff. And, um, you know,
- 2:32:50Speaker 3: I like the six feet, uh, separation. Uh, and, but
- 2:32:53Speaker 3: there was like nobody there. And I go up and
- 2:32:55Speaker 3: I just have like this really good heart to heart
- 2:32:57Speaker 3: talk with, um, uh, the pharmacist who was just felt
- 2:33:01Speaker 3: like sharing. And I felt like, listen, I had talked
- 2:33:04Speaker 3: to her, uh, and, um, I was just going like,
- 2:33:07Speaker 3: you know, these kinds of conversations don't happen on a
- 2:33:10Speaker 3: day to day status quo thing. So, um, and she
- 2:33:14Speaker 3: was getting emotional and it was just like, and it
- 2:33:16Speaker 3: was the same conversation we're having here about like people,
- 2:33:20Speaker 3: learning that we have to take care of one another. And, uh,
- 2:33:23Speaker 3: it was, it's, I think I'm seeing a lot of
- 2:33:26Speaker 3: beauty in this terror and it's so sad that people
- 2:33:29Speaker 3: are losing people. But I mean, I think there, there's
- 2:33:32Speaker 3: a great, beautiful thing that's happening at the same time. Uh, uh, so,
- 2:33:39Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's crazy, man. It's crazy. And Brian,
- 2:33:43Speaker 3: you know, it's, it's, it's amazing stuff going on.
- 2:33:47Speaker 1: I think I'm going to leave it with that. I
- 2:33:48Speaker 1: like your wrap up. So we're just going to, we're, we're,
- 2:33:51Speaker 1: we're seeing beautiful things out there.
- 2:33:53Speaker 3: There we go.
- 2:33:54Speaker 1: We'll take that. This thing has pushed us to be
- 2:33:57Speaker 1: better people. Maybe it's shoved us as hard as we
- 2:34:01Speaker 1: could take, but along the way, we're finding a few
- 2:34:05Speaker 1: people are actually decent people. So it's good to know
- 2:34:09Speaker 1: they're still out there. Be that person, be the better person,
- 2:34:13Speaker 1: help your neighbor. If you can, Try to do something
- 2:34:16Speaker 1: useful and call people up and have wonderful conversations like
- 2:34:20Speaker 1: this whole thing with me and this crazy Sam person
- 2:34:23Speaker 1: that I'm talking to today.
- 2:34:25Speaker 3: Yeah. Call up somebody and talk about a zombie movie.
- 2:34:29Speaker 3: That's the takeaway here.
- 2:34:32Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. All right.
- 2:34:34Speaker 3: Awesome. Well, cool, man. It was good talking with you, dude.
- 2:34:38Speaker 1: Definitely. Thank you for coming along on this journey. And
- 2:34:41Speaker 1: thanks to everybody else for joining in.
- 2:34:43Speaker 3: Right on.
- 2:34:45Speaker 1: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 2:34:47Speaker 1: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 2:34:50Speaker 7: Let me tell you about a girl I know.
- 2:34:55Speaker 1: I met her walking down a uptown street.
- 2:34:58Speaker 13: She's so fine. You know, I wish she was mine.
- 2:35:01Speaker 13: I get shook up every time we meet. I'm talking
- 2:35:05Speaker 13: about you. Nobody but you. Yeah, I do mean you.
- 2:35:15Speaker 7: I'm just trying to get a message to you Let
- 2:35:18Speaker 7: me tell you about a girl I know I tell you.
- 2:35:21Speaker 1: Now, she looks so good Got so much skill.
- 2:35:25Speaker 13: Such a beautiful bill She ought to be somewhere in
- 2:35:28Speaker 13: Hollywood I'm talking about you Nobody but.
- 2:35:33Speaker 7: You Come on, give me a cue So I can
- 2:35:40Speaker 7: get a message to you Sitting right here by my
- 2:36:06Speaker 7: side Lovely indeed, that's why I asked her if she'd
- 2:36:10Speaker 7: Thomas me someday she would be my bride I'm talking
- 2:36:13Speaker 7: about you I do mean you Nobody but you.
- 2:36:23Speaker 13: Come on, let me get a message through.
- 2:36:32Speaker 3: They're like, I think I might have some, you know,
- 2:36:35Speaker 3: I'm actually talking on some air buds right now. So,
- 2:36:40Speaker 3: you know, I.
- 2:36:41Speaker 1: You said air bud, right? Like the dog playing basketball.
- 2:36:44Speaker 1: I only can hope that you're talking into like the
- 2:36:49Speaker 1: face of a dog right now. He's just looking at
- 2:36:51Speaker 1: you like. I can score on your ass.
- 2:36:54Speaker 3: I've got two golden retrievers bungee corded to either side
- 2:37:01Speaker 3: of my head. All right. All right.
- 2:37:02Speaker 1: Talking into a tail. This all comes together. I see.
- 2:37:05Speaker 1: She won't answer the health.
- 2:37:06Speaker 10: We're locked into the moon's gravitational pull.
- 2:37:09Speaker 4: What do.
