- 0:00Speaker 1: Today, I'm here with vocalist and songwriter for Bowling for
- 0:02Speaker 1: Soup Jared read It, Jared, wonderful to have you here.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good to be here.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Bowling for Soup will be playing at Good Things Festival.
- 0:11Speaker 1: How does it feel to be returning here to Australia
- 0:14Speaker 1: after fifteen years?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been gosh, yeah, it's been a long time.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We're so excited. You know, we've had a few few
- 0:23Speaker 2: plans to come back that that didn't work out, whether
- 0:26Speaker 2: it was the pandemic or whatever. But so man, I'm
- 0:29Speaker 2: glad it's finally happening, and you know, honestly, we just
- 0:33Speaker 2: can't wait, feelus.
- 0:35Speaker 1: You guys will be celebrating your thirty year anniversary as
- 0:38Speaker 1: a band, and you've done so much yourself outside.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Of Bowling for Soup.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You've lent your voice to some TV shows and you've
- 0:44Speaker 1: released some country songs amongst many other things.
- 0:47Speaker 3: You must love staying busy.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, being busy is I guess it keeps you young.
- 0:52Speaker 2: But you know, I don't really have any hobbies. You know,
- 0:55Speaker 2: it's music is my is what I do and it's
- 0:59Speaker 2: what I love and and you know again, acting voices
- 1:01Speaker 2: things like that. So you know, whether it's getting myself
- 1:05Speaker 2: into directing or writing or whatever, it's it's it's something.
- 1:08Speaker 2: It's always something to have to do with just being creative,
- 1:11Speaker 2: and you know, that's just my thing. And so you know,
- 1:15Speaker 2: I I definitely like I do. I do like to
- 1:18Speaker 2: stay busy and uh and and you know, just making
- 1:21Speaker 2: things is my favorite thing to do in the world.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Yeah, you're also a huge advocate for mental health, especially
- 1:28Speaker 1: in the music industry. Why is that important for you?
- 1:32Speaker 2: Well, it's important for me because I really was unaware
- 1:35Speaker 2: of of you know, how vast the the struggle was.
- 1:39Speaker 2: You know, I really just didn't know, and I didn't
- 1:42Speaker 2: really understand what depression was. I didn't really understand what
- 1:46Speaker 2: anxiety was until it hit me, and it hit me
- 1:48Speaker 2: late in life. I was already in my forties, and
- 1:52Speaker 2: so you know, I even talking about it at first.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You know, the whole thing about the stigma is just
- 1:59Speaker 2: really real because I was embarrassed to talk about it
- 2:02Speaker 2: because I was just like, oh, no, people are just
- 2:04Speaker 2: gonna come back at me and be like, oh, you're
- 2:05Speaker 2: the funny guy. You can't be sad, And I'm like, well,
- 2:07Speaker 2: I'm not sad. I'm depressed. You know, and and so yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 2: it it's you know, once I became educated myself, I
- 2:16Speaker 2: was just like, gosh, I've had this so wrong. And
- 2:19Speaker 2: you know, people feel so alone out there because they're
- 2:22Speaker 2: scared to talk about it. And so yeah, it's been
- 2:25Speaker 2: something that that I've been passionate about for several years.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And you know, during that time, I've seen that stigma
- 2:33Speaker 2: start to go away quite a bit, and I've seen
- 2:36Speaker 2: more people talking about it, and I've seen more people
- 2:38Speaker 2: getting help and you know, people reaching out and and
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, it's it's been very, very rewarding. But but
- 2:46Speaker 2: quite honestly, it was it was a personal thing for
- 2:49Speaker 2: me because because again I was so blindsided by it
- 2:53Speaker 2: and I was just like, man, if this can happen
- 2:55Speaker 2: to me, it could happen to anybody. And so I
- 2:57Speaker 2: just sort of like I went from from you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: absolutely just hiding in a dark room in the fetal
- 3:04Speaker 2: position to like out waving my hands, going guys, this
- 3:08Speaker 2: is normal. You know, like we gotta get you gotta
- 3:10Speaker 2: get the therapy, you got to talk to your doctor,
- 3:12Speaker 2: you've got to reach out, you got to get sunlight,
- 3:14Speaker 2: you gotta drink water, you know, and so you know
- 3:18Speaker 2: that it's uh, you know, it's still very very important
- 3:20Speaker 2: to me.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 3:22Speaker 1: And I guess as well, in the music industry, often
- 3:26Speaker 1: from an outsider's perspective, we don't see what's going on
- 3:29Speaker 1: behind the scenes. So I think that's awesome that you're
- 3:31Speaker 1: a big advocate for those musicians as well to say.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it looks like we're all just out here
- 3:38Speaker 2: on a big party.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Yep.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Uh. And obviously we know that not to be true now,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and I think people are learning that, you know, people
- 3:45Speaker 2: in the industry, people in the entertainment industry, we're just people.
- 3:50Speaker 2: You know, we have the same problems, you know, the
- 3:53Speaker 2: same same uh, you know, obstacles. You know, we have
- 3:57Speaker 2: the same same things that go with are go along
- 4:01Speaker 2: with being parents. And you know, it's it's all, it's
- 4:03Speaker 2: it's all the same. We just happen to be, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 2: doing a job that that one side of it is
- 4:09Speaker 2: being shown in one way or another to the world.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And so yeah, I think and and I think, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 2: musicians tend to keep it to themselves a little bit more.
- 4:23Speaker 2: And and you know, entertainers, you know, just because you
- 4:26Speaker 2: want that persona to be out there you know, it
- 4:29Speaker 2: sells tickets. You know, if if if you think that
- 4:32Speaker 2: that we're the happiest, most fun party band in the world,
- 4:36Speaker 2: like you're gonna want to come see that, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: and and you don't want to see you know, these
- 4:40Speaker 2: guys that are singing about having fun all the time.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You know, well, at least this is what my what
- 4:45Speaker 2: was in my head was like, man, people aren't gonna
- 4:48Speaker 2: want to hear that. They don't want to hear that.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I that I, you know, can't even function on a Thursday,
- 4:53Speaker 2: you know, And so uh, yeah, it's uh, it's definitely passionate.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I'm definitely passionate about it. And uh and and that's
- 5:00Speaker 2: been it's been very rewarding for me. It's been very
- 5:03Speaker 2: therapeutic for me as well.
- 5:05Speaker 3: As a fan or like audience member or crowd member.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I suppose it makes you guys more relatable as well,
- 5:11Speaker 1: to see that you guys, we know that you guys
- 5:13Speaker 1: are human, but you know the extent of it, if
- 5:15Speaker 1: you guys can share your struggles, I think it really
- 5:18Speaker 1: helps a lot of people.
- 5:19Speaker 2: And yeah, I agree with you, and you know that,
- 5:23Speaker 2: and I try to bring that into our into our show.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And you know, just for a moment and let people know, Hey,
- 5:29Speaker 2: you know, if you're here and you you know, this
- 5:31Speaker 2: is the first time you smile in a week, and
- 5:33Speaker 2: you feel like you're alone, you're not, and so yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 3: It's wonderful.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Nineteen eighty five was one of the first songs I
- 5:41Speaker 1: put on my iPod. And you guys have had a
- 5:43Speaker 1: few massive had had quite a few massive hits. Can
- 5:46Speaker 1: you tell us what it was like at the time
- 5:48Speaker 1: to have those songs blow up?
- 5:50Speaker 3: Was it overwhelming?
- 5:51Speaker 2: It all? Well, you know, for us, I think it was.
- 5:55Speaker 2: It was very nice because nothing, for Bawling for Soup,
- 5:58Speaker 2: has ever just exploded. Everything has been really gradual. You know,
- 6:01Speaker 2: we we were avent. We started in ninety four, we
- 6:04Speaker 2: got signed in two thousand. You know, we did a record,
- 6:07Speaker 2: we did then we did another major label record, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: then we had a hit, and then it was our
- 6:11Speaker 2: third major label record, where nineteen eighty five was just massive,
- 6:15Speaker 2: and uh so I feel like, you know, it was
- 6:19Speaker 2: probably advantageous to us as a band and as the
- 6:22Speaker 2: people that that we didn't just get this insane overnight success,
- 6:27Speaker 2: that everything was a climb, like it felt like we
- 6:29Speaker 2: were fighting for it all all the time, and so
- 6:32Speaker 2: I feel like we were very I think we were
- 6:36Speaker 2: very appreciative of everything along the way too. But you know,
- 6:40Speaker 2: I do have to say, you know, it was there.
- 6:42Speaker 2: It was an amazing time, you know, when nineteen eighty
- 6:45Speaker 2: five came out and the songs after that that you
- 6:48Speaker 2: know you turn on your TV and our videos on,
- 6:52Speaker 2: you know, it was, Uh, it was a great time.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And uh, you know, I it's definitely something that that
- 6:59Speaker 2: I'll never forget. And you know, and the fact that
- 7:03Speaker 2: people still appreciate those songs. You know, like I said,
- 7:05Speaker 2: nineteen eighty five is twenty years nineteen eighty five almost
- 7:08Speaker 2: in Ohio are all twenty years old, you know, and
- 7:12Speaker 2: so the fact that we still play those every night
- 7:15Speaker 2: and people go crazy is just you know, it's it's
- 7:19Speaker 2: just a testament to what it is, you know, we
- 7:22Speaker 2: created at the time, and just how loyal the fan
- 7:25Speaker 2: base is.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, And with that resurgence I think of on
- 7:30Speaker 1: social media, with the nineties and late two thousands being
- 7:33Speaker 1: so popular, I think it's seen you guys, Yeah, just
- 7:36Speaker 1: have your time again and it's awesome.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 7:40Speaker 1: How do you guys come up with the names for
- 7:42Speaker 1: your albums?
- 7:44Speaker 2: Uh? You know, I'll tell you it's most of the
- 7:48Speaker 2: time it's stuff that just happens. So it's an ongoing
- 7:51Speaker 2: thing where something will just someone will just say something
- 7:56Speaker 2: and I'll go, that's a good name for an album.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And for the most part, that's how it happen. Weapons
- 8:00Speaker 2: And in fact, our our drummer's wife said the other day, Uh,
- 8:05Speaker 2: she just said, I'll party if I have to, And
- 8:07Speaker 2: I'm like, what a great name for our next album, Like, yeah,
- 8:10Speaker 2: that'll be it. And so so for now, the working
- 8:13Speaker 2: title for our next album is I'll party if I
- 8:15Speaker 2: or we'll will party if we have to, And until
- 8:19Speaker 2: that gets beaten, that's the name of the album. And
- 8:22Speaker 2: so that's an exclusive. I haven't told anybody that and so,
- 8:26Speaker 2: uh but yeah, you know, I mean, honestly, it goes
- 8:28Speaker 2: back to drunk enough to dance you know where we're
- 8:31Speaker 2: you know, which is our second major label record.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Uh.
- 8:34Speaker 2: We were just at a at a show in San
- 8:37Speaker 2: Antonio and after the show it turned into a dance
- 8:40Speaker 2: party and we're all out there on the dance floor
- 8:42Speaker 2: and Chris Berney just said, you know, we're drunk when
- 8:44Speaker 2: we're drunk enough to dance, And I was like drunk
- 8:46Speaker 2: enough to dance. What that's an amazing name for an
- 8:50Speaker 2: album and uh so, yeah, that's that's pretty much how
- 8:53Speaker 2: they all happen.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's awesome. How important is Bowling for Soup to you?
- 9:00Speaker 3: You and the guys in it?
- 9:02Speaker 2: Oh wow? I mean it's it's it's everything to me.
- 9:08Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's it's just, you know, besides my family,
- 9:12Speaker 2: it's the most important thing in my life. You know,
- 9:14Speaker 2: it's because it's not just it's not just my livelihood.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean, it's it's it means so much to so
- 9:20Speaker 2: many people, and it's it's just it's bigger than just
- 9:23Speaker 2: the albums or the songs, or the or or or
- 9:26Speaker 2: the videos or you know, it's bigger than all that.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You know, it's this whole thing that you know, we've created,
- 9:33Speaker 2: something that people are going to talk about after we're
- 9:35Speaker 2: not even on the planet anymore. And you know, it
- 9:39Speaker 2: affords us the ability to be able to to go
- 9:42Speaker 2: out and play songs with our best friends and you know,
- 9:45Speaker 2: do what ninety nine point nine percent of the people
- 9:48Speaker 2: in the world dream of one day, you know, And
- 9:51Speaker 2: so I would say, insane, insanely.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Important, wonderful.
- 9:57Speaker 1: What's the number one thing you hope that the audience
- 10:00Speaker 1: walks away with after one of your shows.
- 10:03Speaker 2: A smile on their face. You know, my favorite thing
- 10:06Speaker 2: in the world is watching people sing, watching them smile,
- 10:10Speaker 2: you know, seeing them laugh at our jokes. Yeah, sorry, sorry,
- 10:16Speaker 2: it's I just got off tour, so that is. I'm
- 10:18Speaker 2: not bored. I'm just trying to so no, but I
- 10:22Speaker 2: mean just seeing people leave with a smile on their face,
- 10:26Speaker 2: and you know that that is my favorite thing in
- 10:28Speaker 2: the world.
- 10:29Speaker 3: Awesome. Do you know if you'll do a shoey?
- 10:34Speaker 2: What's a shoey?
- 10:35Speaker 3: I'm so glad you asked.
- 10:37Speaker 1: It's where usually I remember in the crowd, they'll throw
- 10:40Speaker 1: up their crusty shoe at you and you pour some
- 10:43Speaker 1: alcohol in it and you drink it on stage.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Oh no, I'm not doing that. Somebody throws their shoe
- 10:47Speaker 2: up at me. We're peeing in it. I took a
- 10:53Speaker 2: Doc Martin to the face one time in the UK,
- 10:55Speaker 2: and I am I am not going to encourage shoes.
- 10:59Speaker 3: No, no, that's fair enough.
- 11:01Speaker 1: I can understand that, oh dear. Also another silly question,
- 11:08Speaker 1: what's your favorite flavor of soup?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I enjoy minnestrone all Variety. Yeah, yes, that's.
- 11:17Speaker 3: A good one. I'm a bit of a pumpkin girl
- 11:19Speaker 3: or tomato girl myself, but I get that it's good.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I'll be at good things in Sydney and we can't
- 11:24Speaker 1: wait to see you play. Thank you so much for
- 11:27Speaker 1: joining us today. Is there anything else you'd like to say.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I'd just like to say thanks for having me and Australia.
- 11:34Speaker 2: We can't wait to see you guys. It's been way
- 11:35Speaker 2: too long.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Definitely, we're so excited. Thank you so much, Jarret, thank
- 11:40Speaker 3: you
