- 0:07Speaker 1: Yo, it's your girl Jessica S. Smith, and you already
- 0:10Speaker 1: know that you've entered the safe space for influencers to decompress,
- 0:14Speaker 1: have fun, and just ask. If you already know what
- 0:18Speaker 1: it is, then you know it's about to get real.
- 0:22Speaker 1: So be sure to show your girls some love and like, comment,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and subscribe.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I know we could be another way.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's a new week here at Just Ask the Podcast,
- 0:40Speaker 1: the safe space where transparency meets transformation. It's your girl
- 0:43Speaker 1: Jessica S. Smith, and I do nothing without my girl, Desiree. Hey. Desiree. Hey. Desiree, Desiree, Desiree, Desiree, Desiree. Hi, Jessica. Hey, Desiree. Ooh,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I was struggling. You were? Was I struggling really bad?
- 0:59Speaker 1: Just a little bit. Y'all. Yeah, I was trying to say, yeah,
- 1:01Speaker 1: like she did. No. Listen, I had a little break.
- 1:05Speaker 1: We had a good break. Had a little break. It
- 1:07Speaker 1: was a break. We haven't recorded, recorded since. What that mean?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Because people, I mean, I think people know that we
- 1:15Speaker 1: batch record. You've said it multiple times. I know, but
- 1:17Speaker 1: sometimes people walk in and, you know how the folks
- 1:20Speaker 1: walk in the church and they say, hey, are you
- 1:21Speaker 1: a visitor?
- 1:22Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Do we have any visitors in the house? Can you
- 1:25Speaker 1: say hello in the chat? Hello. Because we want to
- 1:27Speaker 1: see that you're visiting and we want to welcome you
- 1:29Speaker 1: to Just Ask the Podcast. Yeah. Okay? Yeah. Desiree, you
- 1:32Speaker 1: look blessed. Well, I received that in Jesus' name. You know,
- 1:37Speaker 1: I feel blessed. I am blessed. We are blessed. I
- 1:40Speaker 1: was about to say. You've been outside, though, since we
- 1:43Speaker 1: haven't been recording. Tell the people where you've been now.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Where I've been? So you didn't just go across the country? Oh, outside.
- 1:51Speaker 1: You was outside. Like, that's a whole other level of outside.
- 1:54Speaker 1: In the UK. In the UK. Yeah, it was a
- 1:56Speaker 1: good time. Everybody's not able to UK. You know, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: now realize that. Mm-hmm. And I am very grateful for
- 2:03Speaker 1: the opportunity. Very grateful. Was that your first time? Yes.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Being in the UK, period, or being overseas, or both?
- 2:10Speaker 1: In the UK. I mean, I've gone to, like, you know, cruises.
- 2:13Speaker 1: I think I've done, like, an all-inclusive. I think I've
- 2:15Speaker 1: been to Dominican Republic, but, like, that's my first time
- 2:17Speaker 1: across that far.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Across the world. I think that's a little different. And
- 2:20Speaker 1: a nine-hour flight. All right. Yeah. But we bless the
- 2:23Speaker 1: Lord that the flight was well. There was no malfunction. Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: it was good. Or anything like that. Honestly, it didn't
- 2:29Speaker 1: feel like nine hours. Like, on my way over there,
- 2:31Speaker 1: it was technically a red eye. Uh-huh. And I ain't
- 2:33Speaker 1: gonna fall asleep until the last two hours, child. Oh.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So you was alert. Then I was struggling. Yeah, y'all
- 2:38Speaker 1: was like, you was struggling. Then I was on a
- 2:39Speaker 1: struggle bus, because that time change is real, real. The
- 2:41Speaker 1: jet lag is real, real. All the things. But it
- 2:44Speaker 1: was a mighty time. So you've been out the country. Mm-hmm.
- 2:49Speaker 1: How was that for you? Because we ain't gonna just,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you know... Um, it was, I'm gonna say sobering. Okay.
- 2:56Speaker 1: You know, I think, um, the one thing that I
- 2:59Speaker 1: just kept thinking about how we take a lot of
- 3:01Speaker 1: things for granted. Yeah. Um, even though, you know, it's
- 3:05Speaker 1: a lot happening in our country. Right. But still at
- 3:07Speaker 1: the same time, like you think about the people who
- 3:09Speaker 1: have sacrificed their lives to get their families here. Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You know, because of the opportunities that are here. You
- 3:15Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? And it was not like it
- 3:17Speaker 1: was a third world or anything like that. It's just
- 3:20Speaker 1: we take things for granted, like air conditioning. Yeah, because
- 3:24Speaker 1: I was going to bring it up. I almost didn't
- 3:26Speaker 1: have a fan, y'all. Y'all know those portable fans or whatever? Oh,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I wore that thing. How did Desiree get it? I
- 3:33Speaker 1: don't know. Because at the podcast limit. You said, hey,
- 3:37Speaker 1: put this in your bag. I put it in my bag,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and then I forgot to take it out of my bag.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So I had just a little fan, and let me
- 3:42Speaker 1: tell you, that thing came in handy over in the Cambridge. Okay.
- 3:47Speaker 1: In Cambridge. I plugged it up to this little power,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and baby, it was powerful. It was little, but it
- 3:52Speaker 1: was mighty. It was mighty. Small but mighty. Listen, that's
- 3:55Speaker 1: a word for somebody. Don't let the size fool you.
- 3:58Speaker 1: When you need it, it can be a mighty win. Yes. Okay? Yes. No,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you've done some... You were gone for like two weeks.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It was like... Is that... Oh, 10 days. About two weeks. Yeah,
- 4:08Speaker 1: 10 days. About two weeks. 10 days. What was Jessica
- 4:11Speaker 1: doing during the break? What was Jessica doing? Preparing. Preparing. Preparing.
- 4:16Speaker 1: What you preparing for, girl? Oh, man.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Oh, my.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Alabaster. Oh, my gosh. Listen, y'all. That's so dope. Hopefully
- 4:23Speaker 1: by the time y'all see this. My friend famous. Why
- 4:25Speaker 1: y'all saying that? Because you are. Okay, I'm going to
- 4:31Speaker 1: let y'all have it. Thank you. I feel like an
- 4:34Speaker 1: official speaker now. No, we're talking for real. I thought
- 4:38Speaker 1: I was a speaker before, but this process, I feel
- 4:41Speaker 1: like it put a stamp on me. And not just
- 4:44Speaker 1: because it's TEDx. It could have been named anything else.
- 4:47Speaker 1: If I would have went through the same process... Which,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know people really understand the discipline
- 4:56Speaker 1: and the commitment that it takes. For TEDx speakers, I
- 5:00Speaker 1: have a new renown respect for anything TED. Because they
- 5:04Speaker 1: don't care if you famous. They don't care how smart
- 5:07Speaker 1: you are. They don't care how long you've been speaking.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You're going to go through their process. And I think that...
- 5:13Speaker 1: That first part, like the knowing of that is very humbling.
- 5:19Speaker 1: It's very humbling because you can't go in these folks'
- 5:23Speaker 1: establishments acting like you know everything because they have a standard.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. They have a standard. And so I
- 5:33Speaker 1: completed TEDx. Hopefully by the time this episode release, you're
- 5:38Speaker 1: able to see it. So friend, I feel like It's
- 5:43Speaker 1: one thing to talk about my perspective, but I feel
- 5:45Speaker 1: like you should talk about your perspective first. Like, I
- 5:48Speaker 1: want us to walk them down, because a lot of
- 5:50Speaker 1: people are asking me different questions about it, and maybe
- 5:52Speaker 1: you can help me answer some of these questions regarding TEDx,
- 5:56Speaker 1: how my experience was, and why I even did it,
- 5:59Speaker 1: I guess. I think it was interesting watching you walk
- 6:03Speaker 1: through the process, because there were certain.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I don't know if you call it milestones, what do
- 6:10Speaker 1: you call it, like deadlines of things that had to
- 6:12Speaker 1: be due. And, you know, and I know I know
- 6:15Speaker 1: my friend, you know, my friend being ahead, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: stressing about the things that I did. But I can
- 6:22Speaker 1: only imagine that even if she felt about even if
- 6:25Speaker 1: you felt behind, like you were still on time. And
- 6:28Speaker 1: I did fall behind several times because, you know, fear
- 6:32Speaker 1: would make you procrastination loud. right? And so the fear
- 6:37Speaker 1: attached was, it was fear wrapped up in imposter syndrome.
- 6:45Speaker 1: That imposter syndrome like was trying to get me. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: so I avoided some of the work a lot of times.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I avoided some of the work a lot of times
- 6:55Speaker 1: for the simple fact that I was afraid that I
- 6:58Speaker 1: was not the right person to do it. Like I
- 7:00Speaker 1: was like, I think y'all might've chosen wrong. I think
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think that y'all think I'm somebody that I'm not.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And this is a joke. This is a joke. I
- 7:13Speaker 1: think that y'all don't really know who y'all chose, right?
- 7:18Speaker 1: But what kept me, what is the weird thing, is
- 7:21Speaker 1: through the process to keep submitting different homework assignments and
- 7:26Speaker 1: meeting with my coach, for one. My coach, Mia, was
- 7:31Speaker 1: just absolutely amazing. Like, she was definitely heaven sent. I'm
- 7:34Speaker 1: so glad that Lisa, shout out to Lisa Craig, who
- 7:39Speaker 1: is the coordinator of TEDx Alabaster. She really, she really
- 7:44Speaker 1: honed me back into my core, right? My core is
- 7:47Speaker 1: the Lord, right? Everybody, some people know me as a
- 7:50Speaker 1: church lady. That's what I'm learning now. But, baby, I'm
- 7:52Speaker 1: going to find a church lady, okay? Okay. She out
- 7:55Speaker 1: here getting cute. Come on. She was already cute. I
- 7:59Speaker 1: think she's just coming into awareness of who she really is.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Thank you. I'm going to just say thank you and
- 8:04Speaker 1: leave it alone. Okay? You're welcome. But no, so I
- 8:09Speaker 1: think that what kept me going was it's out there now. Like,
- 8:17Speaker 1: the flyer was out there. Oh, yeah. They did a
- 8:19Speaker 1: great job with advertising. They did a wonderful job. And
- 8:22Speaker 1: promoting the speakers. I love that. Like, really, really gave
- 8:26Speaker 1: the speakers... shine like they really spotlighted the speakers the
- 8:32Speaker 1: entire time and well guess what i i knew up
- 8:34Speaker 1: front that if we didn't do what we're supposed to
- 8:36Speaker 1: do that lisa was cutting okay which we started with
- 8:41Speaker 1: 16 people only 14 people graced that stage so she
- 8:45Speaker 1: was she wasn't playing games and so i think that
- 8:49Speaker 1: and and Let me pause. Why is Jessica telling this story?
- 8:53Speaker 1: For one, it's just as a podcast, and I always
- 8:55Speaker 1: take you through a journey that I've been through. Two,
- 8:57Speaker 1: there are some people that are aspiring to be on TEDx,
- 9:00Speaker 1: and so I think my platform is a good, honest,
- 9:03Speaker 1: transparent platform to do. And three, I think that if
- 9:08Speaker 1: I can do it, a lot of people that's doubting
- 9:10Speaker 1: themselves can do it, because you wrote a post... the
- 9:12Speaker 1: other day, pull it up and pull it up so
- 9:14Speaker 1: we can read that. Because I think that if I
- 9:17Speaker 1: can get through this process, anybody can get through this process. Um,
- 9:21Speaker 1: that is like, it's called, let's just, let's, let's just,
- 9:25Speaker 1: I want to be very specific about that. There are
- 9:26Speaker 1: some people that in my mind, I'm like, Oh my gosh,
- 9:28Speaker 1: they have to do TEDx because TEDx is a platform
- 9:32Speaker 1: that they, they really believe in cultivating an experience that,
- 9:38Speaker 1: based on the different avenues of people they've chosen to speak.
- 9:42Speaker 1: So when you walk in the doors and experience, like
- 9:44Speaker 1: the experience that we had at Texas Alabaster was an
- 9:47Speaker 1: art exhibit. And then they did little scavenger hunts and
- 9:51Speaker 1: helped you do like brain workouts or whatever. The whole
- 9:55Speaker 1: thing started with a dance. Somebody performed a dance. Then
- 9:59Speaker 1: we had a sex performance twice. It wasn't just a talk.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It was a whole experience. And I didn't realize that
- 10:06Speaker 1: until I was in the process. I thought people just
- 10:07Speaker 1: did their speeches. which they don't like column speeches, they
- 10:10Speaker 1: like column talks, right? What's your idea worth spreading? And
- 10:15Speaker 1: I think even that question, right, helps you embrace your thoughts. Ooh,
- 10:19Speaker 1: I just felt my shift come on. What is your
- 10:22Speaker 1: idea worth spreading? This is good to me. That's good. Jayla,
- 10:27Speaker 1: pick this up. What is your idea worth spreading? Because
- 10:32Speaker 1: that question, first of all, you have to know you
- 10:35Speaker 1: to know your idea. Right. That means that you had
- 10:38Speaker 1: to spend enough time with yourself to discover your thoughts
- 10:43Speaker 1: and then appreciate your thoughts to see if they were spreading.
- 10:47Speaker 1: That was another struggle for me. That you had enough
- 10:51Speaker 1: to actually spread. Desiree. I literally, they asked me what
- 10:55Speaker 1: was my ideal worth spreading, and I said life could
- 10:58Speaker 1: be simple if you just ask. But being coached and pulled,
- 11:03Speaker 1: my ideal worth spreading end up being safe spaces don't
- 11:08Speaker 1: start with answers. They start with questions. Yeah. And so
- 11:14Speaker 1: when you get to a place of, okay, the why,
- 11:18Speaker 1: can I ask why behind it? That's your idea worth spreading, right?
- 11:22Speaker 1: But I had to really engage with my thoughts of
- 11:26Speaker 1: what are my ideas? Mm-hmm. Right? What are they? Have
- 11:31Speaker 1: I written them down, made them plain? Have I engaged
- 11:34Speaker 1: in them? Have I communicated them not knowing? So I
- 11:37Speaker 1: was like, what am I going to talk about? All
- 11:39Speaker 1: I know is podcasting, right? No, what podcasting did was
- 11:43Speaker 1: it led me to a deeper root idea, a solution
- 11:48Speaker 1: I provide for problems of people not being able to ask.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Why aren't we asking? So now it led me, it
- 11:54Speaker 1: journeyed me down deeper. A pathway I wasn't expecting. And
- 11:59Speaker 1: I end up crying when I finally completed the whole thing.
- 12:03Speaker 1: And I heard myself say my speech. I recorded myself.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And I said speech. Talk. And I recorded myself. I
- 12:09Speaker 1: cried the first time. Because it hit me first. It
- 12:14Speaker 1: hit me first. And so I think that... I think
- 12:18Speaker 1: not just even if you're on the... the TEDx stage
- 12:22Speaker 1: or not, knowing your idea worth spreading is a God thing.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Because if you have an idea, we already know the
- 12:29Speaker 1: creator of all things, the judge of all men has
- 12:31Speaker 1: given it to you, right? And so if he's given
- 12:34Speaker 1: it to you, he's given you the art form to
- 12:37Speaker 1: spread it. Whether it's through song, thank you, Holy Spirit.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Whether it's through speeches, whether it's through sermons, whether it's
- 12:44Speaker 1: through podcasting, whether it's through dance, because dance is a language.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Whatever your idea is, you have a responsibility. Thank you,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Holy Spirit. You have a responsibility to spread that idea
- 12:56Speaker 1: because it wasn't yours not to spread. Yeah. That's good.
- 13:01Speaker 1: It's not your idea not to spread. It was a
- 13:05Speaker 1: gift given to you. You open the box. You say, hey,
- 13:07Speaker 1: that's an idea. Let me pick it up. And you
- 13:10Speaker 1: run with it. That goes back to Habakkuk. Two and four.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Two and something. Right now. Location. Address. It's in the Bible.
- 13:22Speaker 1: It's in the Bible. It is for your theologians or whatever.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Somebody tried to come for me. You saw it. I
- 13:29Speaker 1: saw it. Okay. Anyway, y'all can come and I'm going
- 13:32Speaker 1: to let you in the door. And guess what I'm
- 13:34Speaker 1: going to tell you. If I don't know something, I
- 13:36Speaker 1: don't know, but I got somebody that do. Okay? We
- 13:38Speaker 1: got partners right here. I don't do community by myself. Anyway,
- 13:41Speaker 1: that was, you know... That just irritates me. It irritates me.
- 13:47Speaker 1: But back off commercial break. We have a responsibility to
- 13:54Speaker 1: gift God back his idea by packaging it to his people. Mm-hmm.
- 13:59Speaker 1: And so however we decide to package, like I said,
- 14:01Speaker 1: whether it's podcasting, whether it's dance, whether it's any other
- 14:06Speaker 1: creative form that God has blessed you with, it deserves
- 14:11Speaker 1: to spread. Yeah, that's so good. This is so good. Okay, Desiree,
- 14:14Speaker 1: I'm going to give it back to you. What you
- 14:16Speaker 1: had told them, people, because you sent them straight in.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I mean, I did, but I didn't. So I wrote
- 14:20Speaker 1: a post because, one, I took some pictures of my sister,
- 14:23Speaker 1: and I thought she was funny. She was funny. You
- 14:25Speaker 1: hear me? Yeah. Not just because the lens on her,
- 14:27Speaker 1: but my sister is fine anyway, okay? And so I'm
- 14:30Speaker 1: trying to get better with... Your content. Exactly. And so
- 14:35Speaker 1: it's kind of sporadic, but it's very inspired when I
- 14:39Speaker 1: do post, right? So I came across this picture with Jess,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and it's just like she had this intense look like
- 14:47Speaker 1: it was a confident kind of look, but it was like,
- 14:50Speaker 1: I'm walking this thing out for real, right? So the
- 14:54Speaker 1: post says... I know. Oh, just kidding. She battled her
- 14:58Speaker 1: thoughts all week. Right. I know because I know my sis,
- 15:02Speaker 1: the doubt, the what if I'm not ready, the very
- 15:05Speaker 1: human wrestling that happens when God asks you to step
- 15:08Speaker 1: into something that feels much bigger than you. But she
- 15:11Speaker 1: showed up anyway in faith and in confidence and delivered
- 15:15Speaker 1: her first TEDx talk like she had been doing it
- 15:17Speaker 1: her whole life. Why am I mentioning this to you?
- 15:20Speaker 1: You may ask. Well, outside of bragging on my friend,
- 15:25Speaker 1: you may be sitting with something God called you to
- 15:27Speaker 1: do and you keep talking yourself out of it. Well,
- 15:32Speaker 1: hear this. The battle in your mind is not a
- 15:35Speaker 1: sign that you're not ready. It's a sign that what
- 15:37Speaker 1: you're carrying actually matters. You don't have to have it
- 15:40Speaker 1: all figured out. You just have to show up and
- 15:43Speaker 1: be obedient. That last line or the last few lines,
- 15:50Speaker 1: it struck me because I was that person. And for you,
- 15:55Speaker 1: I think it's easy for me to talk about me
- 15:58Speaker 1: and what I was experiencing. But I think what's so
- 16:03Speaker 1: beautiful about our relationship is that you literally have been
- 16:08Speaker 1: in big moments with me. And you've seen me... You've
- 16:14Speaker 1: seen probably every emotion of... For TEDx specifically, what did
- 16:20Speaker 1: you experience and what was... Like, what was your response
- 16:25Speaker 1: when I actually executed? Like, from the time of where
- 16:28Speaker 1: seeing me fearful and indulging in imposter syndrome to the actual, oh, girl,
- 16:34Speaker 1: you did that. Yeah. So I think just as we've
- 16:37Speaker 1: been able to do life and relationship together, you begin
- 16:41Speaker 1: to learn, like, learn who you're in relationship with, right?
- 16:45Speaker 1: So Jessica is a, how can I? Just say it.
- 16:52Speaker 1: She loves like quality time. You know, that's one of
- 16:55Speaker 1: her one of her big love languages also. And because
- 16:58Speaker 1: the Lord is bringing her healing, healing her through the
- 17:02Speaker 1: spirit of rejection, the imposter syndrome, the not being enough.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I know sometimes she will ask me questions so that
- 17:14Speaker 1: she can be validated in her thoughts and what she's doing.
- 17:17Speaker 1: And sometimes I don't answer. And sometimes I don't answer,
- 17:22Speaker 1: not like in a malicious way, but because it's, I
- 17:26Speaker 1: want her to, some things we just have to walk
- 17:28Speaker 1: out with us in the Lord, right? So I just
- 17:30Speaker 1: want her to be able to take those thoughts and
- 17:33Speaker 1: submit them to the Lord and begin to know that
- 17:35Speaker 1: she is enough. Because at the end of the day, like,
- 17:38Speaker 1: they could have, how many people applied? I know you
- 17:43Speaker 1: saw that email. Yeah. It was over 200 people. Over
- 17:47Speaker 1: 200 people. And they narrowed it down to 16 people.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And Jessica, the Jessica S. Smith was one of them.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Right.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So I don't think if we if and it's a
- 17:55Speaker 1: thing like I've been thinking about this stuff sometimes like, OK,
- 17:58Speaker 1: it would really believe what the word says. The word
- 17:59Speaker 1: says that I knew you before I placed in your
- 18:02Speaker 1: mother's womb. You know, I have plans for you there
- 18:04Speaker 1: to prosper you and not to harm you. Right. So
- 18:07Speaker 1: it's kind of like, OK, if we know this is
- 18:08Speaker 1: a God thing. right? Yeah. God don't make mistakes. He doesn't.
- 18:12Speaker 1: He don't make mistakes. So if he's put us in
- 18:14Speaker 1: a place, he's given us an idea, a thing to do,
- 18:17Speaker 1: that means he's equipped us already for the thing that
- 18:19Speaker 1: we've been called for. But we, because of our, you know,
- 18:22Speaker 1: our own insecurities, our, you know, past things, stuff like that,
- 18:26Speaker 1: we always second doubt ourselves. Right. Yeah. So that week, um,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know, I would check in here and there, but
- 18:32Speaker 1: I was like, I just need her to prepare how
- 18:36Speaker 1: she needs to prepare, right? But I already knew that
- 18:39Speaker 1: I was going to show for you. Is that the word?
- 18:43Speaker 1: We're going to call it armor bear because the woman
- 18:44Speaker 1: got armor bear. She came and picked me up and
- 18:47Speaker 1: she took me to my makeup appointment. She did all that. Listen,
- 18:51Speaker 1: if y'all have a friend that like I think that
- 18:54Speaker 1: is the one of the important things about our friendship
- 18:57Speaker 1: right knowing when to serve each other like even I
- 19:01Speaker 1: have to listen let me tell you I have to
- 19:03Speaker 1: fight her to serve her but I I I think
- 19:07Speaker 1: I take it with ease because my brain be all
- 19:09Speaker 1: over the place or whatever and so to not even
- 19:12Speaker 1: thinking about having a drive hey Jessica do you want
- 19:15Speaker 1: something you know to drink like Hey, don't worry about
- 19:18Speaker 1: your stuff. Hey, get your stuff ready. Do you have this, this,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and this? Like, because I'm thinking about this mountain to climb, y'all.
- 19:24Speaker 1: I see the mountain. I don't see the tools that
- 19:27Speaker 1: I need. I don't see anything. She's like, hey, just said, hey,
- 19:32Speaker 1: I brought my, because we went, she went and got
- 19:35Speaker 1: her makeup done. But she was like, hey, I put
- 19:37Speaker 1: my makeup brushes in my bag. So we was like, okay, great.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You you got the, like, you brought like extra makeup.
- 19:43Speaker 1: This is a touch up. She's like, I got the
- 19:46Speaker 1: makeup brush. You know, like I said, that didn't make
- 19:52Speaker 1: any sense. I was like, when I, when they said
- 19:54Speaker 1: it back to me, that didn't make any sense. So
- 19:56Speaker 1: just imagine like what else my brain was telling me. Um,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and so I was so grateful. I'm always grateful when
- 20:03Speaker 1: you do this. Cause that's not the first time she's
- 20:05Speaker 1: done it. Like, and so, um, When you say that
- 20:11Speaker 1: I battled all week, I did, right? Because heavy is
- 20:14Speaker 1: the head that wears the crown, right? And I had
- 20:17Speaker 1: to really, really zone in. Shout out to my girl,
- 20:20Speaker 1: Kim Davis. She's known as the river lady to my people.
- 20:25Speaker 1: But she was also a speaker at TEDx, and we
- 20:28Speaker 1: really hit it off. And the Lord had told me
- 20:32Speaker 1: to call her Monday. And she gave me some prophetic instructions.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I was scared to take them. Let me tell you why.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Because I thought if I didn't do it the way
- 20:44Speaker 1: everybody else prepared, the way everybody else in my mind
- 20:47Speaker 1: was preparing, because I didn't. I didn't really have tangible
- 20:50Speaker 1: evidence that everybody else was preparing the way I wasn't preparing.
- 20:55Speaker 1: You get what I'm saying? Like, I'm thinking people, you know,
- 20:58Speaker 1: saying that speech all the time, having cue cards or whatever.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I tried all this stuff. It didn't work for me. Right. Right?
- 21:03Speaker 1: And so, honestly, I did more listening to myself than, like,
- 21:08Speaker 1: saying it out loud. I listened to myself way more.
- 21:11Speaker 1: Thank you, Holy Spirit. Mm-hmm.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I listened to myself way more than I actually said it, right?
- 21:18Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, it was in me.
- 21:21Speaker 1: And sometimes you don't know what's in you. I think
- 21:23Speaker 1: that's the test, right? The stage was the test of
- 21:26Speaker 1: what I was listening to. Y'all, I feel my help coming.
- 21:29Speaker 2: That's good.
- 21:30Speaker 1: The stage was the test to what I had indulged in.
- 21:34Speaker 1: The stage was the test of what my relationship was
- 21:37Speaker 1: with what I was listening to. Mm-hmm. Right. And so
- 21:41Speaker 1: I think that can even go towards our faith. Right. OK,
- 21:44Speaker 1: I don't I don't I feel weak here. I feel
- 21:46Speaker 1: less than here. What are you listening to? What are
- 21:49Speaker 1: you indulging? That's why one reason why I love that
- 21:51Speaker 1: the Bible app has the audio, the audio option, not audio.
- 21:56Speaker 1: It was because I was being lazy and didn't want
- 21:58Speaker 1: to read it first. But I love it because when
- 22:00Speaker 1: I hear it, I retain it better. You get what
- 22:03Speaker 1: I'm saying? And because I retain it better like this, right,
- 22:07Speaker 1: doesn't mean that I'm less than. And that'll mean that
- 22:10Speaker 1: I had a, when it was time for me to
- 22:12Speaker 1: regurgitate it, like when it was, shout out to Jose,
- 22:15Speaker 1: when he called me out on it, he was like,
- 22:17Speaker 1: why does it sound like you read? Because I had
- 22:19Speaker 1: listened to it so much. Watch this. Watch this. This
- 22:22Speaker 1: moment is so powerful. So when I started my speech,
- 22:26Speaker 1: I didn't even finish my talk with Jose. He told me,
- 22:30Speaker 1: he was like, you do not sound like yourself. I
- 22:33Speaker 1: want to make this plain for y'all. I was listening
- 22:35Speaker 1: to what I had written down, but I had not
- 22:38Speaker 1: taken what I written down and applied it to me,
- 22:41Speaker 1: even though it was the word for me from me. Right.
- 22:44Speaker 1: And so what I had to do was make that
- 22:46Speaker 1: thing clear. tangible to me first so I could communicate
- 22:51Speaker 1: it there. Sometimes the word, even the word, we'll just
- 22:54Speaker 1: regurgitate it, we'll hear it, we'll see it, and we'll
- 22:57Speaker 1: just say what the word say, but we ain't felt
- 23:00Speaker 1: that thing. We haven't embraced that thing. And then we
- 23:03Speaker 1: can't spread that idea because we don't understand what it
- 23:08Speaker 1: means to us. What does your speech mean to you?
- 23:12Speaker 1: What does your idea mean to you? You can't spread
- 23:14Speaker 1: it because you haven't done relationship with it. So I
- 23:17Speaker 1: was so focused on making sure I sounded right versus
- 23:21Speaker 1: being what I was saying. Y'all. I wasn't focused on
- 23:26Speaker 1: being what I was regurgitating, right? And so sometimes, this
- 23:29Speaker 1: is why I have a problem with these theologians and
- 23:33Speaker 1: people that want to tip-tap and black and white me
- 23:36Speaker 1: all day. It's because the Bible is not just a
- 23:41Speaker 1: source of let me regurgitate it, let me just know it.
- 23:44Speaker 1: It's when it's When it's in me, then I can
- 23:45Speaker 1: make it a part of my life. When it's in me,
- 23:48Speaker 1: I can follow its ways because I've listened to it
- 23:51Speaker 1: so much, now my body is responding. Watch this, I
- 23:55Speaker 1: didn't get to practice a lot of, hey, my body
- 23:58Speaker 1: needs to respond like this. And I can't tell you
- 24:00Speaker 1: right now in this moment what I did. I can't
- 24:02Speaker 1: wait to see it. I can't wait to see it.
- 24:04Speaker 1: But based on them pictures, I got low. Oh, you did.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I don't know what I was doing. You get what
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'm saying? But my body responded because in my mind,
- 24:13Speaker 1: I was like, okay, I rehearsed it. I could see
- 24:15Speaker 1: myself doing it when I heard myself. So now when
- 24:18Speaker 1: I hear the word, I can see myself acting on
- 24:20Speaker 1: the word. So when I do the word, it's just
- 24:22Speaker 1: an ease to it.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's in you.
- 24:24Speaker 1: And I had to get to the point where I
- 24:25Speaker 1: did relationship with what I said. I had the relationship
- 24:29Speaker 1: with what was written down. So when I delivered it,
- 24:32Speaker 1: it was in my way. And sometimes, even in day-to-day conversations, Desiree,
- 24:37Speaker 1: I catch myself saying, you know, I might not say
- 24:40Speaker 1: this because I'm not saying it right. What is right?
- 24:43Speaker 1: What is right? What is right? People might have a
- 24:46Speaker 1: problem with me not being able to say, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: what addresses are in the Bible. But guess what? We
- 24:52Speaker 1: got Google, right? We got Google, and I thank God
- 24:55Speaker 1: for Google. You know where I learned that from? Being
- 24:57Speaker 1: able to repeat the word, and I might just know
- 25:02Speaker 1: a part of the word, but I don't know where
- 25:04Speaker 1: it's at. Coach D, when the prophet was looking up, saying, oh,
- 25:08Speaker 1: what is that Holy Spirit? And she paused. And with
- 25:11Speaker 1: Google it, that freed me so well because sometimes I
- 25:14Speaker 1: thought we were just supposed to know. I was being
- 25:16Speaker 1: real religious about a relationship that I was trying to
- 25:21Speaker 1: build with God and that blocked me from being able
- 25:24Speaker 1: to become who I am now. And I'm still becoming. Yeah,
- 25:27Speaker 1: that's good. Another unique thing that happened, y'all, and I
- 25:32Speaker 1: kind of want to land here because this blessed me
- 25:34Speaker 1: so good. This blessed me so good. So if you're
- 25:39Speaker 1: not in the state of Alabama... You probably don't know
- 25:42Speaker 1: about this brand, right? It's holy water. We call it
- 25:47Speaker 1: Jesus water down here. But it's $ 11. 86, and it's in
- 25:51Speaker 1: a blue bottle. You can order it online. I promise
- 25:54Speaker 1: you that's probably the best water. It is. It is
- 25:57Speaker 1: the best water. It's really straight from heaven. When I
- 25:59Speaker 1: tell you the best water, I don't mean it for myself.
- 26:01Speaker 1: They're not paying me to say this, okay? Straight from heaven.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Straight from heaven. The unique thing about this, for one,
- 26:07Speaker 1: it's black-owned, right? Right here, I think it's around Montgomery
- 26:10Speaker 1: or something like that. But I'm not for sure. It's
- 26:14Speaker 1: around that area. But it's black-owned, and they are believers
- 26:20Speaker 1: in Jesus Christ. They have over 200 scriptures... They are
- 26:25Speaker 1: on the top, in the top of their caps. So
- 26:28Speaker 1: when you open, this is not the water, but when
- 26:30Speaker 1: you open the cap, it's going to be, for those
- 26:32Speaker 1: who's watching, it's going to be in the cap. It's
- 26:34Speaker 1: a blue cap, and it's going to have a scripture
- 26:37Speaker 1: in it. Now, Holy Spirit is so good. When I
- 26:40Speaker 1: tell you Holy Spirit is so good, I'm a fan
- 26:43Speaker 1: of the water anyway, but they were one of the
- 26:45Speaker 1: sponsors for TEDx Alabaster, right? And so they provided us water.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And in my water, I told Nella, shout out to
- 26:54Speaker 1: my girl Nella because she served me well as well.
- 26:57Speaker 1: But in my water, Philippians 3, 12 through 16 was
- 27:01Speaker 1: in my cup. And I felt, I said, ooh, I said,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I need you to read that to me. Now, I
- 27:08Speaker 1: had to leave and come back and sit down in
- 27:11Speaker 1: my green room. And Nella looked at me, y'all, and
- 27:14Speaker 1: this is what she read to me. This is Philippians 3.
- 27:18Speaker 1: 12 through the 16th verse. It says, not that I've
- 27:23Speaker 1: already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I
- 27:27Speaker 1: make every effort to take hold of it because I
- 27:30Speaker 1: also have been told by Christ Jesus. Brothers and sisters,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it.
- 27:38Speaker 1: But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and
- 27:42Speaker 1: reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my
- 27:47Speaker 1: goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus. Therefore,
- 27:54Speaker 1: let all of us who are mature think this way.
- 27:57Speaker 1: If you think differently about anything, God will reveal this
- 28:01Speaker 1: also to you. In any case, we should live up
- 28:04Speaker 1: to whatever truth we have obtained. And it took, why
- 28:12Speaker 1: did that resonate with you so good? For me in
- 28:18Speaker 1: that moment, it told me everything else that happened before
- 28:25Speaker 1: this does not matter. Pressing toward the mark in spite
- 28:32Speaker 1: of is an uphill battle, right? We know that I've
- 28:38Speaker 1: talked about my journey with dating. I've talked about how
- 28:42Speaker 1: I feel like I am not worthy of a responsibility
- 28:46Speaker 1: as a podcast and speaking. And the first verse says,
- 28:51Speaker 1: not that I've already reached a goal or I'm already perfect,
- 28:55Speaker 1: I still got to press even in my imperfection. So
- 28:59Speaker 1: the Lord is like, I don't even, I'm not even
- 29:03Speaker 1: looking at this. This is not the Lord talking right now.
- 29:05Speaker 1: This is Peter, Paul. This is Paul writing a letter
- 29:11Speaker 1: to the Philippines. Philippines, I almost said the Philippians. I
- 29:19Speaker 1: love it. Oh, baby, y'all getting what I'm saying, right?
- 29:23Speaker 1: But this is Paul talking and he and we know
- 29:26Speaker 1: Paul as this great apostle. And he's saying, hey, not
- 29:30Speaker 1: that I'm perfect. Not that I have all it got
- 29:33Speaker 1: got it already all the way together. But I've taken
- 29:36Speaker 1: hold of what Christ has said about me. I take.
- 29:40Speaker 1: hold of the identity that he has been provided. I've
- 29:43Speaker 1: taken hold of my future and not my past. Because
- 29:47Speaker 1: my past will discredit me every time. My past will
- 29:53Speaker 1: tell me that I'm not enough. My past will tell
- 29:56Speaker 1: me I'm not worthy of this moment. My past will
- 29:59Speaker 1: tell me you were the wrong choice. That's what my
- 30:03Speaker 1: past will tell me. But my future mattered more in
- 30:07Speaker 1: that moment because my future wasn't just about me. My
- 30:12Speaker 1: future was about other people. I don't know who that
- 30:15Speaker 1: message took. I don't know what talk delivered people. You
- 30:20Speaker 1: get what I'm saying? And that was me and Kim's thing.
- 30:21Speaker 1: It was like, And my coach, my coach was like,
- 30:24Speaker 1: even if it's the one, but I pressed towards the mark.
- 30:28Speaker 1: What's the mark? What's my mark? My goal in life
- 30:32Speaker 1: is to show Jesus. Yeah. It's to be an example
- 30:36Speaker 1: of the love of God and provide it on this earth.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Do I get it right all the time?
- 30:42Speaker 2: No.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I went off the only lady in P. Louis, but
- 30:44Speaker 1: I think I did it in love. It was very unprofessional.
- 30:49Speaker 1: It was very stern. Okay. It was very stern. Okay.
- 30:54Speaker 1: But in that moment, that scripture told me, I chose
- 30:59Speaker 1: you for real. It was a reminder that I couldn't
- 31:02Speaker 1: focus on what I hadn't done, even within this process.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I was on myself. I should have did this by
- 31:09Speaker 1: this time. If I would have had more time. No. No.
- 31:11Speaker 2: No.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Because you're not the same person. You're trying to act
- 31:17Speaker 1: like everybody else or the gifts that make room for
- 31:20Speaker 1: you going to make room for everybody else. No, you
- 31:23Speaker 1: were built for this. So your retention or your ability
- 31:27Speaker 1: to retain things may not be the same way. I
- 31:30Speaker 1: was talking to... Shout out to Ladarius. But Darius didn't
- 31:34Speaker 1: even ask me if I wanted to do it. He
- 31:37Speaker 1: just said, hey, somebody going to call you. You need
- 31:40Speaker 1: people like that in your life to say somebody's just
- 31:42Speaker 1: going to call you. Okay. Because I would have probably said, uh-uh, no.
- 31:46Speaker 1: What I'm going to do that for? I have nothing
- 31:48Speaker 1: to share. I have nothing to share. But he shared
- 31:53Speaker 1: with me. He was like, no, I memorized mine. Like, da-da-da.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I was like. No, I don't think I said what
- 31:58Speaker 1: I wrote down. I don't think I said everything. I
- 32:01Speaker 1: said enough to get by. But I was like, I
- 32:04Speaker 1: don't think I said it verbatim or whatever or what
- 32:08Speaker 1: I said. Because even at the last minute, the Lord said, hey,
- 32:11Speaker 1: start it like this. So that was the first time
- 32:14Speaker 1: I even started my talk the way I did on
- 32:17Speaker 1: that stage. You know what I'm saying? And that's the
- 32:19Speaker 1: flexibility we have to have with Holy Spirit. That is
- 32:22Speaker 1: the expectation we should have with Holy Spirit is that
- 32:25Speaker 1: he's going to... You prepare. This is why having the
- 32:28Speaker 1: word is good. Going back to having the word in
- 32:31Speaker 1: you so that you can have that idea worth spreading.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Because God got a lot of ideas. He got... What,
- 32:35Speaker 1: 66 books of them? It's a lot. It's a lot
- 32:38Speaker 1: of ideas. Okay, God is sharing his ideas with me,
- 32:41Speaker 1: and then he spreads it through by using us. You
- 32:43Speaker 1: get what I'm saying? So if it's in you, you
- 32:45Speaker 1: don't have to be perfect with the delivery, but the
- 32:48Speaker 1: point is going to be made when you give Holy
- 32:50Speaker 1: Spirit the flexibility. We just got through talking about Holy Spirit.
- 32:53Speaker 1: When you give Holy Spirit the flexibility to be Holy Spirit,
- 32:56Speaker 1: then you can be a mouthpiece, and you can already
- 32:59Speaker 1: have what's in you, and he can use what's in you.
- 33:02Speaker 1: But if it's not in you, it can't be used.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Get it in you first. And so that scripture just
- 33:10Speaker 1: reminded me that to press toward the mark.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:14Speaker 1: I know some people are used to the King James Version.
- 33:17Speaker 1: What you over there looking like there for Desiree? No,
- 33:19Speaker 1: I thoroughly, I don't really know. I had never been
- 33:22Speaker 1: to a TEDx talk, okay, first off. So now I'm
- 33:25Speaker 1: a little more cultured. Thank you so much. But I
- 33:28Speaker 1: thought it was very well put together. And to know
- 33:32Speaker 1: that it's all done voluntarily. Yes. You know, like that
- 33:36Speaker 1: well executed. And ain't nobody getting paid for it. Right.
- 33:40Speaker 1: But I love that they, you know, they had the speakers.
- 33:43Speaker 1: They knew because it was so long, like they were
- 33:46Speaker 1: very intentional about putting breaks and points in there, you know,
- 33:49Speaker 1: to get the mind working, to keep people up and alert.
- 33:52Speaker 1: But for me to see you finally on the stage
- 33:57Speaker 1: and taking your test and passing your test with flying colors,
- 34:01Speaker 1: like I was literally like, I ain't finna cry. she
- 34:05Speaker 1: ain't gonna make me cry nope nope i ain't gonna
- 34:08Speaker 1: cry but man she is killing it that's what i'm
- 34:09Speaker 1: thinking in my mind right and so you know i'm
- 34:13Speaker 1: uh you know i'm working on my my sentimentalness and
- 34:16Speaker 1: so when i as i was sitting there and i
- 34:18Speaker 1: was just thinking like the journey that you had taken
- 34:20Speaker 1: i was like lord this this moment needed to happen
- 34:23Speaker 1: for her to know that um who you called her
- 34:27Speaker 1: to be is exactly who you called her to be
- 34:30Speaker 1: regardless of past the past what the past has said
- 34:35Speaker 1: um this moment right here um yes she's she's a
- 34:39Speaker 1: preacher right she's she's a jesus girl she's a daughter
- 34:43Speaker 1: but this uh to me on this magnitude of a
- 34:46Speaker 1: stage was like no that you you're really a speaker
- 34:49Speaker 1: like for real you know what i'm saying so that
- 34:51Speaker 1: was only the first of many um the first of
- 34:53Speaker 1: many stages to come and now um because they're You
- 35:01Speaker 1: just did it. Yeah. I'm glad you said that last
- 35:04Speaker 1: thing because when I've been told like, hey, sell Jesus
- 35:09Speaker 1: or hey, this is the church lady. I'm like, how
- 35:13Speaker 1: does one, you know, because we couldn't talk about religion
- 35:19Speaker 1: necessarily on there. That's one of the rules. And so
- 35:23Speaker 1: how does one still be in the world? Mm-hmm. And
- 35:32Speaker 1: speak worldly, and I'm saying, I'm using this very loosely, worldly,
- 35:38Speaker 1: communicate as the world still communicate Jesus. And I think
- 35:44Speaker 1: this helped me a lot with being able to communicate
- 35:49Speaker 1: Jesus without even having to say his name. And I
- 35:54Speaker 1: think it was important, like you saying that because, yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: I'm a preacher. Yeah, ministry. Yeah, I can pray for you. Yeah,
- 36:01Speaker 1: I can do all these things. But I can also
- 36:04Speaker 1: show up. What did Paul say? He says, being all
- 36:07Speaker 1: things to all men. Like, I don't have to say
- 36:10Speaker 1: Jesus' name to represent him well. You know what I'm saying?
- 36:13Speaker 1: And it's not that I didn't know that before. But
- 36:15Speaker 1: I didn't know if I was wanted in those spaces,
- 36:18Speaker 1: those type of spaces. You get what I'm saying? And
- 36:20Speaker 1: so I'm grateful to have learned that or seen that proven,
- 36:26Speaker 1: because I've always thought it, but it was proven on
- 36:29Speaker 1: a stage of this magnitude. And so I just want
- 36:32Speaker 1: to encourage anyone that's... Maybe it's not TEDx. Maybe it's
- 36:38Speaker 1: speaking at your local... your local events like, I don't know,
- 36:44Speaker 1: some city event or anything that you are scared to do. Normally,
- 36:49Speaker 1: when you're scared to do it, like Desiree says, it's
- 36:52Speaker 1: not that you should run away from it, but you
- 36:54Speaker 1: should lean into that fear so that courage can rise.
- 36:56Speaker 1: That's what the Lord was telling me while I was
- 36:58Speaker 1: walking on the stage. He was like, courage has to
- 37:01Speaker 1: show up because you're walking in this in spite of
- 37:04Speaker 1: your fear. And I'm so grateful and I'm so thankful
- 37:09Speaker 1: for this opportunity. And so the opportunities that you keep avoiding,
- 37:14Speaker 1: you're only mismanaging your greatness. You're only mismanaging the open
- 37:19Speaker 1: doors that God has had for you. You're only mismanaging
- 37:21Speaker 1: the opportunity to spread your idea. What is your idea
- 37:30Speaker 1: worth spreading? I think that's what this is. What is
- 37:33Speaker 1: your idea? Lean into that idea. notify yourself of the idea,
- 37:39Speaker 1: embrace the idea, do relationship with the idea so that
- 37:42Speaker 1: when you spread it, you have the confidence needed to say, do,
- 37:46Speaker 1: speak it in any language, whether it is through movement,
- 37:49Speaker 1: whether it's through your talk, whether it's through written word,
- 37:53Speaker 1: whatever your idea is worth spreading. It's time to spread it.
- 37:56Speaker 1: No more sitting down on yourself. No more sleeping on yourself.
- 38:00Speaker 1: It is time to do the will of the Lord
- 38:02Speaker 1: in whatever arena the Lord calls you to. And so
- 38:05Speaker 1: I love you guys. Y'all talk to me. Would y'all
- 38:08Speaker 1: do TEDx? Y'all let me know in the chat, okay?
- 38:11Speaker 1: Until next week, until next time, remember, life could be
- 38:14Speaker 1: much more simple if you just ask. Thank you for
- 38:23Speaker 1: tuning in to this week's episode of Since you've made
- 38:26Speaker 1: it this far, you might as well connect with us
- 38:28Speaker 1: on all social media platforms at the Jessica S. Smith.
- 38:33Speaker 1: I know I won't see you back until next week,
- 38:35Speaker 1: but until then, remember to love always yourself and always
- 38:42Speaker 1: thank God for another day.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I know we could be another way. Thank God for
- 38:54Speaker 2: another day. Hey, hey, I'm just thankful for another day. Hey, hey,
- 39:04Speaker 2: another day older, another day wiser, another day to get
- 39:07Speaker 2: it right, another day to rise up, another day living,
- 39:10Speaker 2: another day with loved ones. I always remember holding down
- 39:13Speaker 2: for above one.
