Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the 31st of March, the very
- 0:16last day of March. And it's great to have your
- 0:18company as you have joined me to do this thing that we do that is
- 0:23opening God's word and reading the Bible.
- 0:25And I was made aware of some research very recently chatting
- 0:29with someone and I've just looked it up and read about it.
- 0:31And the Centre for Bible Engagement has done some
- 0:34research that published mid last year that talks about the
- 0:38benefits of reading your Bible each day.
- 0:41And they found that if people read their Bible three times a
- 0:43week, they have mild to moderate benefits.
- 0:46Whereas if people engage in God's word 4 or more times a
- 0:50week, it's this phenomenal change that happens in people's
- 0:54well being. People are 60% less likely to be
- 0:57spiritually stagnant, 30% less likely to feel lonely, 14% less
- 1:02likely to feel anxious, or 31% less likely to feel discouraged,
- 1:08and much more likely to have the sense of well being, to disciple
- 1:12others, to share their faith with others.
- 1:15Friends. This is not just something we do
- 1:18because it's the routine that we do, but this makes a significant
- 1:22change in our lives. That's what the literature tells
- 1:24us, that listening to God's Word, reading God's Word each
- 1:29day actually changes our hardwiring, changes our
- 1:33experience of ourselves, our relationship with God and our
- 1:38experience of life. So boy, if that is not
- 1:41encouragement enough to to tune in everyday, I don't know what
- 1:45is. This is good for us.
- 1:47Our God and His relationship with us just does good things to
- 1:51our human well being. Oh, how good is that?
- 1:55You can read all about it at the Centre for Bible Engagement.
- 1:59If you're interested, I'll I'll add a link in the show notes.
- 2:02But that aside, we are continuing through this
- 2:05incredible journey as Jesus is in Jerusalem heading toward that
- 2:12biggest of weekends, the Easter weekend that is coming up at the
- 2:15end of this week. So friends, buckle yourselves up
- 2:18as we read this incredible chapter filled with phenomenal
- 2:21moments of Jesus and what he has done for us.
- 2:25So friends, let us settle in and read together Mark chapter 12.
- 2:39Then Jesus began teaching them with stories.
- 2:43A man planted a vineyard. He built a wall around it, dug a
- 2:46pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout
- 2:49tower. Then he leased the vineyard to
- 2:51tenant farmers and moved to another country.
- 2:54At the time of the grape harvest, he sent one of his
- 2:57servants to collect his share of the crop, but the farmers grab
- 3:00the servant, beat him up, and sent him back empty handed.
- 3:04The owner then sent another servant, but they insulted him
- 3:07and beat him over the head. The next servant he sent was
- 3:11killed. Others he sent were either
- 3:14beaten or killed until there was only one left, his son, whom he
- 3:18loved dearly. The owner finally sent him,
- 3:22thinking, surely they'll respect my son.
- 3:25But the tenant farmers said to one another, here comes the heir
- 3:28to the estate, let's kill him and get the estate for
- 3:31ourselves. So they grabbed him and murdered
- 3:34him and threw his body out of the vineyard.
- 3:37What do you suppose the owner of the vineyard will do?
- 3:40Jesus asked. I'll tell you, He will come and
- 3:44kill those farmers and lease the vineyard to others.
- 3:47Didn't you ever read this in the Scriptures?
- 3:49The stone that the builders rejected has now become the
- 3:53cornerstone. This is the Lord's doing and it
- 3:57is wonderful to see. The religious leaders wanted to
- 4:01arrest Jesus because they realised he was telling the
- 4:04story against them. They were the wicked farmers,
- 4:07but they were afraid of the crowd, so they left him and went
- 4:11away. Later the leaders sent some
- 4:14Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap Jesus into saying
- 4:18something for which he could be arrested.
- 4:20Teacher, they said, we know how honest you are.
- 4:25You are impartial and don't play favourites.
- 4:28You teach the way of God truthfully.
- 4:31Now tell us, is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
- 4:37Should we pay them or shouldn't we?
- 4:40Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said why are you
- 4:43trying to trap me? Show me a Roman coin and I'll
- 4:46tell you. When they handed it to him, he
- 4:49asked whose picture and title has stamped on it?
- 4:52Caesar's they replied. Well then Jesus said, give to
- 4:57Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to
- 5:01God. His reply completely amazed
- 5:05them. Then Jesus is approached by some
- 5:09Sadducees religious leaders who say there is no resurrection
- 5:12from the dead. They posed this question.
- 5:15Teacher Moses gave us a law that if a man dies leaving a wife
- 5:20without children, his brother should marry the widow and have
- 5:24a child who will carry on the brother's name.
- 5:26Well, suppose there were seven brothers.
- 5:28The oldest 1 married and then died with our children.
- 5:32So the second brother married the widow, but he also died with
- 5:35our children. Then the third brother married
- 5:37her. This continued with all seven of
- 5:40them, and still there were no children.
- 5:43Last of all, the woman also died.
- 5:45So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection?
- 5:49For all seven were married to her.
- 5:51Jesus replied, Your mistake is that you don't know the
- 5:55Scriptures and you don't know the power of God.
- 5:58For when the dead rise, they will neither marry or be given
- 6:02in marriage. In this respect they will be
- 6:05like the angels in heaven. But now as to whether the dead
- 6:09will be raised. Haven't you ever read about this
- 6:11in the writings of Moses? In the story of the burning
- 6:14Bush, long after Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had died, God said to
- 6:19Moses, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of
- 6:24Jacob. So he is the God of the living,
- 6:27not the dead. You have made a serious error.
- 6:32One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening
- 6:35to the debate. He realised that Jesus had
- 6:38answered well. So he asked of all the
- 6:41commandments, which is the most important?
- 6:45Jesus replied, The most important commandment is this.
- 6:49Listen, O Israel, the Lord our God is the one and only Lord,
- 6:54and you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all
- 6:58your soul, all your mind and all your strength.
- 7:02The second is equally important, love your neighbour as yourself.
- 7:06No other commandment is greater than these.
- 7:09The teacher of religious law replied, Well said teacher, you
- 7:13have spoken the truth by saying that there is only one God and
- 7:17no other, and I know it is important to love him with all
- 7:20my heart and all my understanding and all my
- 7:22strength, and to love my neighbour as myself.
- 7:25This is more important than to offer all the burnt offerings
- 7:29and sacrifices required in the law.
- 7:33Realising how much the man understood, Jesus said to him,
- 7:37You are not far from the Kingdom of God.
- 7:40And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions.
- 7:46Later, as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple, he asked,
- 7:50Why do the teachers of the religious law claim that the
- 7:53Messiah is the son of David? For David himself, speaking
- 7:57under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, said, The Lord said
- 8:01to My Lord, sits at the place of honour at my right hand, until I
- 8:05humble your enemies beneath your feet.
- 8:08Since David himself called the Messiah my Lord, how can the
- 8:13Messiah be his son? The large crowd listened to him
- 8:17with great delight. Jesus also taught.
- 8:21Beware of these teachers of religious lore, for they like to
- 8:25parade around in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings
- 8:29as they walk in the marketplaces.
- 8:31And how they love the seats of honour in the synagogues and at
- 8:35the head table at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat
- 8:39widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by
- 8:42making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be
- 8:47more severely punished. Jesus sat down near the
- 8:51collection box in the temple and watched as the crowds dropped in
- 8:54their money. Many rich people put in large
- 8:58amounts. Then a poor widow came and
- 9:00dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to
- 9:05him and said, I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given
- 9:09more than all the others who are making contributions, for they
- 9:13give a tiny part of their surplus.
- 9:15But she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live
- 9:19on. Our Lord, you are wise beyond
- 9:32our reckoning and our understanding.
- 9:35And when people through these challenges to you, you just cut
- 9:39through to the heart of the truth and delivered that back to
- 9:42them. And Lord, even today, sitting on
- 9:47your resurrected throne, you see truth, you know truth, and you
- 9:52are truth. Jesus, thank you that You not
- 9:57only have saved us, but you continue to walk through life
- 10:02with us, sharing your wisdom with us through your Spirit.
- 10:06And Lord, that wisdom is the wisdom that draws us back to you
- 10:12and back to the Father in love and faith.
- 10:17Our Lord, I pray that you sharpen that lens in our daily
- 10:21lives that everywhere we look, we would see your Kingdom and we
- 10:27would see your Kingdom priorities.
- 10:30And that when we act, we would do so with that lens of eternity
- 10:35firmly planted in the forefront of our minds, that this life,
- 10:40this life is to love you and to love one another, to care for
- 10:46each other and to point all back to you, our wonderful saving
- 10:52God, who is the most important thing in heaven and on earth.
- 10:57And so we love you, and we praise you, and we pray all of
- 11:00this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
