- 0:02Speaker 1: Frasier Friday, and I mean it's not really Broctober yet,
- 0:05Speaker 1: but Brad Brock with us too, and Todd Fraser of
- 0:07Speaker 1: course it's Scottie Braun. What's up, guys, Todd father? So
- 0:11Speaker 1: I want to start this way. Okay, you guys played
- 0:13Speaker 1: with each other a little bit on the Mets. You
- 0:15Speaker 1: know how you get a phone call or teams or
- 0:19Speaker 1: players or somebody could get a phone call around the
- 0:21Speaker 1: trade deadline? Hey, what do you got on this guy?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Like?
- 0:23Speaker 3: You?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good?
- 0:23Speaker 1: Good people? Give me anything else?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Right?
- 0:25Speaker 1: So, and you can't. You can't say just a great dude.
- 0:29Speaker 1: You have to give me a little bit more. So
- 0:31Speaker 1: tell me what you would have said if you got
- 0:32Speaker 1: a quick call on Brad Brock, and then Brad can
- 0:35Speaker 1: answer what he would have said about you.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean for me, it was simple. Balls of
- 0:40Speaker 4: steel is what my first three words would have said.
- 0:44Speaker 4: We would have went on from there. Jersey guy takes
- 0:47Speaker 4: pride in what he does. He's gritty, he's gonna he's
- 0:50Speaker 4: gonna wear his heart on his sleeve out there. He's
- 0:52Speaker 4: gonna get angry when he's not doing well. But that's
- 0:55Speaker 4: the grit inside of him. That's what he's born to
- 0:57Speaker 4: do and that's where he's from. So you want a
- 0:59Speaker 4: guy that's gonna be calm, cool and collective, or you
- 1:02Speaker 4: want a guy that's gonna be balls to the wall.
- 1:04Speaker 4: I'm gonna dominate you, let you know, and I'm gonna
- 1:07Speaker 4: get pissed off about it because I feel like I
- 1:09Speaker 4: got more in the tank even after he does really good.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I want you. I like that.
- 1:14Speaker 1: If I'm the gym on the phone, I'm like Todd
- 1:16Speaker 1: mids midway through your soliloquy, I actually already traded for him.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That was beautiful.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 1:21Speaker 1: We got Brad Brock. Okay, Brad. Now I'm looking into
- 1:24Speaker 1: Todd Frazier.
- 1:25Speaker 2: What do you got?
- 1:26Speaker 5: Oh man?
- 1:27Speaker 6: What can't you say about Todd? He's uh, he's gonna
- 1:29Speaker 6: go out there. He's gonna play every day, same thing.
- 1:31Speaker 6: He's gonna wear his emotions on his sleeves. But at
- 1:34Speaker 6: the end of the day, he's gonna play hard every
- 1:35Speaker 6: single day in the clubhouse. He's gonna ruffle some feathers.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Good and Dad both. Uh, you know, just kind of
- 1:40Speaker 6: get the guys together and just everybody as a team.
- 1:43Speaker 6: You're either gonna love him, hate him, or somewhere in
- 1:45Speaker 6: the middle. But either way, you're gonna respect the way
- 1:47Speaker 6: he plays and the way he goes about his business.
- 1:50Speaker 6: So I found my GM. I want him on my team,
- 1:53Speaker 6: and he's gonna help you win ball games.
- 1:55Speaker 1: It'd be like our current club. Ass it's a little quiet,
- 1:58Speaker 1: nobody sings this will help.
- 2:01Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, he definitely. Uh. He gets it loud, that's
- 2:05Speaker 6: for sure. When he came over again in twenty twenty.
- 2:07Speaker 6: Obviously he knew all the guys at the Mets, but
- 2:09Speaker 6: cloud Clubhouse got a little bit louder as soon as
- 2:11Speaker 6: he showed it back up.
- 2:13Speaker 2: That's good. I love him hate him in between. Man,
- 2:16Speaker 2: that one hurt a little bit.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Damn, it's all you know.
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's you. Andy, are gonna have a little talk after that.
- 2:23Speaker 1: You didn't like that portion of the scouting, Well he didn't.
- 2:27Speaker 2: He didn't like me, that's what he was saying.
- 2:29Speaker 5: That's not true.
- 2:30Speaker 1: That's media immediate. If they're media love, because I know you.
- 2:36Speaker 1: If there's tough love, you're gonna you're gonna give it
- 2:38Speaker 1: right to a youngster that might need to hear. Hey,
- 2:41Speaker 1: hey buddy, you got to show up on time. Okay,
- 2:43Speaker 1: we're all here. I need you to come here. So
- 2:46Speaker 1: somebody might not like that, but they need to hear it.
- 2:50Speaker 5: That's all.
- 2:50Speaker 6: I mean, you missed the part at the end about
- 2:52Speaker 6: you're gonna respect him regardless.
- 2:54Speaker 5: So it's you know, it's not.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I didn't hear Yeah, not my white thing went off,
- 2:57Speaker 2: my fault.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, Well let's get into some ball talk then,
- 3:03Speaker 1: shall we. Let's see what you guys have for me
- 3:04Speaker 1: on the Ale East. Let's charge.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Let's charge out.
- 3:10Speaker 1: The Red Sox are so smoking hot right now, Todd Father.
- 3:14Speaker 1: So they've won eight in a row. They picked up
- 3:16Speaker 1: another little sweep against the White Sox in a really
- 3:19Speaker 1: fun back and forth battle. Since July third, they're twenty
- 3:24Speaker 1: six and three. We are over a month from July third.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It's August seventh, as we're doing this, twenty six and
- 3:31Speaker 1: three since July three. Nobody saw this coming, And if
- 3:35Speaker 1: anyone thinks they saw it coming, they're lying.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, this is incredible. I gotta be honest with you.
- 3:42Speaker 4: I mean, I remember before they all start breaking, know,
- 3:45Speaker 4: they went on their little run, but like even before that,
- 3:48Speaker 4: we're like, man, talk about a disappointment.
- 3:51Speaker 2: And now you're looking.
- 3:53Speaker 4: This, this is incredible and they're beating good teams, and
- 3:56Speaker 4: they're going out there and dominating and they're finding ways
- 3:59Speaker 4: to win. I mean even the close games with a
- 4:01Speaker 4: lot of runs scored. Yesterday was a key example of
- 4:04Speaker 4: that whole thing, not giving up, you know, going down
- 4:07Speaker 4: four runs, coming back, finding a way to get it closer,
- 4:11Speaker 4: even after a couple of mistakes, and you know, they
- 4:14Speaker 4: go in extra innings.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And win the game.
- 4:18Speaker 4: This is the team that would never do that two
- 4:21Speaker 4: months ago. I don't know, they're just finding ways to
- 4:25Speaker 4: do it. Jaron Duran, there's been a lot of talks
- 4:28Speaker 4: about him, and you know what his problems are.
- 4:30Speaker 2: I think they like it.
- 4:31Speaker 4: I think that online Contreras having fun being relaxed now
- 4:34Speaker 4: after the whole big thing. I think that kick started
- 4:38Speaker 4: everything once he got upset, you know, over a pitch
- 4:42Speaker 4: and you know, a little trash talk. I think that
- 4:45Speaker 4: woke them up. And you're seeing it right here. They're
- 4:46Speaker 4: five games out of the Rays. I never thought that
- 4:51Speaker 4: would happen the wild Card. They're doing really well there
- 4:53Speaker 4: and this is a team that you probably if you're
- 4:57Speaker 4: facing them right now on the plus, you don't want
- 4:58Speaker 4: to see this team, you know, barring no injuries, as
- 5:01Speaker 4: they move forward, and the guys are still cruising. This
- 5:04Speaker 4: is a team you don't.
- 5:04Speaker 6: Want to see, yeah, And I think it just kind
- 5:07Speaker 6: of starts with the pitching side of things when you
- 5:09Speaker 6: look at this starting rotation.
- 5:10Speaker 5: They've kind of pitched.
- 5:12Speaker 6: All year long, and they've really gone to another gear
- 5:15Speaker 6: here in the second half and right before the All
- 5:17Speaker 6: Star break, and I just think that's where it kind
- 5:18Speaker 6: of starts. And the offense has met them, and I
- 5:21Speaker 6: think when you put all that together, it puts.
- 5:25Speaker 5: A good team out there, and they just.
- 5:26Speaker 6: When you watch them play right now, it's almost like
- 5:28Speaker 6: you have to turn their game regardless of the score,
- 5:31Speaker 6: because they're either if they're behind, they're going to come
- 5:33Speaker 6: back and tie and take the lead, or if they're ahead,
- 5:35Speaker 6: you just want to buy how much they're going to win.
- 5:37Speaker 6: And the back guys in their bullpen right now are
- 5:40Speaker 6: just pitching lights out also, so.
- 5:42Speaker 5: The game gets in the sixth inning, you have a
- 5:44Speaker 5: Steve Hill to climb to come back.
- 5:45Speaker 6: So Garret Crochet if he comes back before the season too,
- 5:48Speaker 6: you just add another formidable arm in there. Adley Rushman
- 5:51Speaker 6: just got traded over, so you're gonna be adding a
- 5:53Speaker 6: great bat and a good leader. Behind the plate there also,
- 5:56Speaker 6: So I just I don't see this team slowing down.
- 5:58Speaker 6: And like I said, I just think it comes down
- 5:59Speaker 6: to the pitching. You can see the stat there third
- 6:01Speaker 6: in MLB in pitching er and I just think they
- 6:05Speaker 6: do all the little things right. They play good defense,
- 6:08Speaker 6: they run the bases well, they have speed, they can
- 6:10Speaker 6: hurt you in stolen bases, they can take the extra
- 6:12Speaker 6: base when they need to, and I guess that you
- 6:14Speaker 6: when you kind of put all that together, it's just
- 6:16Speaker 6: a winning ball club.
- 6:17Speaker 5: And they're just they're fun to watch right now.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And Todd Father, we were just showing the stat line
- 6:22Speaker 1: on on base percentage for some of their leaders. And
- 6:25Speaker 1: Wilson contrast, didn't play yesterday. I think he's got some
- 6:28Speaker 1: sickness something that stay to day where he'll be back soon.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Three ninety five on base percentage. The first baseman for
- 6:36Speaker 1: the Red Sox can pick it too. He's become a
- 6:38Speaker 1: really good defender, and he's just overall now one of
- 6:41Speaker 1: the best first basemen in baseball. It was a brilliant
- 6:44Speaker 1: off season pickup. I remember when we were talking about it,
- 6:47Speaker 1: I think around winter meetings, because when we were discussing
- 6:50Speaker 1: the Mets and how they can recover from a Pete
- 6:53Speaker 1: Alonzo departure I brought up. I was like, man Wilson
- 6:56Speaker 1: Contreres could fit a spot. They ended up going more
- 6:58Speaker 1: of the Jorge Polanka ro out. My gosh, look at
- 7:01Speaker 1: the difference between those two players. Planco. I mean, he's
- 7:04Speaker 1: been hurt a bit, but is nothing close to what
- 7:07Speaker 1: Contreras is contributing to this team. Emotionally of course, but
- 7:10Speaker 1: also on the field. I mean he gets on base
- 7:12Speaker 1: four to ten times.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And think about this, like we talk we I don't
- 7:17Speaker 4: know now, but talking about this back in the day,
- 7:20Speaker 4: you see catchers all the time take ground balls during
- 7:23Speaker 4: batting practice and fundamentally sound. They're digging in their dirt,
- 7:27Speaker 4: they're getting their cleats in the dirt. They're knocking balls down.
- 7:29Speaker 4: They're not afraid of getting in there and knocking a
- 7:32Speaker 4: ball down. And think about first base, hot shot, find
- 7:35Speaker 4: a way to knock the ball down, get the guy
- 7:37Speaker 4: out picking baseballs. They do it all the time on pitches,
- 7:40Speaker 4: and Wilson Contreras has been phenomenal. Not the tallest guy.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I would be looking for a taller guy. But if
- 7:47Speaker 4: you know how to throw the ball, across the diamond,
- 7:49Speaker 4: you're good. And he's proved that height doesn't matter over there.
- 7:52Speaker 4: He's plenty fine of doing his job and making the
- 7:55Speaker 4: plays and knocking baseballs down. So kudos to him too.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and Brad, I know you mentioned the pitching first
- 8:02Speaker 1: time around, but next go around here the offense has
- 8:05Speaker 1: completely changed. I mean we were looking at their offense
- 8:07Speaker 1: like where's the pop, where's the scoring at home? All
- 8:10Speaker 1: of that has gone away, and we've seen guys like
- 8:13Speaker 1: Rafaela take off, Willi or Bray is really clutch for them.
- 8:16Speaker 1: All of this, plus I know we're not relying on it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Roman Anthony could come back at some point this year.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I know it's taken him a super long time to
- 8:25Speaker 1: sit out right now, and it was kind of a
- 8:27Speaker 1: weird injury diagnosis, but he could come back right It's
- 8:31Speaker 1: much quicker in terms of the progress for a position
- 8:34Speaker 1: player than it is for a pitcher. If a pitcher
- 8:36Speaker 1: is in trouble at this time of year, and they're
- 8:37Speaker 1: not even getting going with progressions, like they're not going
- 8:40Speaker 1: to be giving you six innings in October. But Roman
- 8:42Speaker 1: Anthony was supposed to be the best hitter on this team.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Entering twenty twenty six, they in fact, probably were relying
- 8:48Speaker 1: on him too much and now they haven't had to.
- 8:51Speaker 1: But if he does come back, that changes things.
- 8:55Speaker 6: Yeah big time. I mean, you think about what he
- 8:57Speaker 6: did during the WBC and you had that bad to
- 9:00Speaker 6: this lineup and is the World World Series contender. I
- 9:03Speaker 6: can't help but keep thinking about that, I know, back
- 9:06Speaker 6: in April, and may you be like, you're crazy to
- 9:08Speaker 6: think that, But this team has really turned it around.
- 9:11Speaker 6: I mean, Femway Park last night, if you haven't to
- 9:13Speaker 6: turn that game on, it was absolutely rocking and the
- 9:15Speaker 6: players just did everything to win that game. And you know,
- 9:18Speaker 6: they get down by two in the tenth and come
- 9:21Speaker 6: back and score two to tie, then they score one
- 9:23Speaker 6: in the eleventh and then the twelfth. It's just it's incredible.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Right now. You just think that they're always going to
- 9:29Speaker 6: come back and they always are there. But like you said,
- 9:31Speaker 6: if you can add Roman Anthony to the middle of
- 9:33Speaker 6: that lineup, man, this is a scary team to look
- 9:36Speaker 6: at here moving towards October.
- 9:38Speaker 1: All right, So let's finish with this, Todd Father. How
- 9:41Speaker 1: good are they?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Right?
- 9:42Speaker 1: So we're seeing them play their best ball at this point.
- 9:44Speaker 1: In the season. They're very firmly in a nice position
- 9:47Speaker 1: for a wild card seat. At the moment, they have
- 9:49Speaker 1: an outside chance at the division. Do you think this
- 9:52Speaker 1: is a team that's going to be a problem in
- 9:55Speaker 1: October in an American league that's really down in general
- 9:58Speaker 1: this year?
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I do.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I mean, coming in, you thought the Yankees were the
- 10:02Speaker 4: team to be as usual, you know, looking at numbers,
- 10:06Speaker 4: looking at teams, you thought the Orioles were going to
- 10:09Speaker 4: make a move.
- 10:10Speaker 2: That's not happening. The Tiger is not happening. The Mariners,
- 10:15Speaker 2: you know, we talk about them all the time.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Yeah, this is gonna be This is gonna be really
- 10:20Speaker 4: hard to decide. You've got to see who's healthy come
- 10:25Speaker 4: playoff Game one. But again, I think this is one
- 10:29Speaker 4: of the top teams.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Now.
- 10:30Speaker 4: It's so funny how we're talking like this. The ebbs
- 10:32Speaker 4: and flows of the years, people wrote this team off
- 10:36Speaker 4: and now it's like, whoa, you don't want to be
- 10:38Speaker 4: facing this team anymore. They're clicking at the right time.
- 10:41Speaker 4: So yes, you want to. You face this team opening round,
- 10:44Speaker 4: You're in for a dog fight. So I think there
- 10:47Speaker 4: is an opportunity for this team to make a run
- 10:49Speaker 4: a big run.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And Brad for you the same question, but also to
- 10:52Speaker 1: add to it, just because you've seen him, You've got
- 10:55Speaker 1: your Birdland territory show, you're covering the Orioles more than
- 10:59Speaker 1: any other team. Can you tell me what you think
- 11:02Speaker 1: the impact could be from Adlee Rutchman when he returns.
- 11:04Speaker 1: And also, I know you're not going to play doctor,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but you know, just giving us a rundown of what
- 11:09Speaker 1: he's been going through this year. I know, I think
- 11:11Speaker 1: this is his third I Elston right now.
- 11:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I think when he comes back, it's just gonna
- 11:16Speaker 6: add another lineup guy, but also somebody who knows how
- 11:18Speaker 6: to handle a pitching staff, starters, relievers, everybody. He's such
- 11:22Speaker 6: a leader back behind the plate and he's got a canon,
- 11:24Speaker 6: so you pretty much eliminate the running game and that's huge.
- 11:27Speaker 6: Come October baseball, and I think he's he's on the
- 11:30Speaker 6: way to recovery.
- 11:31Speaker 5: He's had a couple of weird injuries this year.
- 11:32Speaker 6: He had a concussion where an Aaron throw hit him
- 11:35Speaker 6: in the helmet as.
- 11:35Speaker 5: He was running the first base, so that was unfortunate.
- 11:38Speaker 6: This last one is kind of a risk injury that
- 11:41Speaker 6: there was really no details.
- 11:42Speaker 5: It just said they were it was kind.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Of bothering him for a little bit, and that's kind
- 11:46Speaker 6: of where they left it up until he got traded.
- 11:48Speaker 5: So it sounds like.
- 11:49Speaker 6: He's getting ready to do his rehab and I just
- 11:51Speaker 6: think when he gets over there, he's going to be
- 11:53Speaker 6: in the lineup every day and being a switch hitter
- 11:55Speaker 6: at Fenway Park, especially if you're a left you can
- 11:57Speaker 6: hit it off the monster. If you're righty, same thing,
- 12:00Speaker 6: you can hit it over the monster. So I just
- 12:02Speaker 6: think that ballpark really plays well for his style of
- 12:05Speaker 6: baseball and especially his hitting side.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Hey, last thing, so, Craig Wrestler received a ton of heat.
- 12:11Speaker 1: We've given him heat on this show, and there have
- 12:14Speaker 1: been stories about how he has evolved into the role.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Sometimes you judge people on the role a little bit
- 12:19Speaker 1: too soon. Well, some radio stations up in Boston were
- 12:22Speaker 1: given it to him, and one of them received a
- 12:25Speaker 1: little bit of a mic drop.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Back, Craig.
- 12:29Speaker 7: There are some who listen to this show who believe
- 12:32Speaker 7: that I have not issued a suitable enough apology for
- 12:36Speaker 7: a brief period of skepticism about how you do your job.
- 12:41Speaker 7: So first and foremost, I have apologized that wasn't good
- 12:46Speaker 7: enough or should I go deeper.
- 12:49Speaker 5: I'm not going to.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Stand in the way if you want to continue.
- 12:55Speaker 7: I mean, there are some who after last week felt
- 12:58Speaker 7: like you actually don't like me and I I.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Just I don't think you like him at all.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I don't.
- 13:03Speaker 5: I don't get that feeling.
- 13:06Speaker 7: I enjoy Thursday mornings when I got to grab a
- 13:09Speaker 7: cup of coffee, sit at the desk and call in.
- 13:12Speaker 7: So listen, I apologize for not believing. There was a
- 13:16Speaker 7: point where I didn't believe. I believe now I apology.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an error message.
- 13:22Speaker 1: That's the Greg Hill Show on wee I that's fun.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I love that little personality from Craig. I've pointed this
- 13:29Speaker 1: out his quotes. They're changing too sometimes, like yeah, like
- 13:31Speaker 1: the intel here and the way that someone slicing up
- 13:35Speaker 1: the Curtis meat for Connolly early trade. Okay, and I
- 13:37Speaker 1: know me got hurt, but he's like, we had a need.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Same thing with Retchmond. Imagine showing this to a Red
- 13:41Speaker 1: Sox fan back in April this week, tweeted out yesterday
- 13:44Speaker 1: slaying Giants last thirteen games against division leaders, they're thirteen
- 13:48Speaker 1: to oh over seven runs per game. They have been
- 13:52Speaker 1: ridiculous right now, really in every facet of the sport. Hey,
- 13:57Speaker 1: Todd father, back to you. We're just going to mix
- 13:59Speaker 1: in during the breaks. Here some other thoughts on teams.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So the Reds just swept the A's as it's been
- 14:04Speaker 1: a mess. They lost eight in a row and tumbled
- 14:06Speaker 1: out of this. I'm not saying the Reds are in
- 14:08Speaker 1: the wildcard race. They are four games back. I just
- 14:10Speaker 1: think it's funny. They got smashed to pieces for doing
- 14:12Speaker 1: nothing at the trade deadline, and I think that's fair
- 14:15Speaker 1: right because they're like, oh, well we kept guys going,
- 14:16Speaker 1: feel like the offers were enough. Well, the guys are
- 14:18Speaker 1: going to be free agents. So if you're selling, then
- 14:20Speaker 1: sell the guys, and even saving money is important to them.
- 14:22Speaker 1: But but there are four games out of a wildcard spot,
- 14:26Speaker 1: the Pirates spot. They're four and a half games out.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I know the Cardinals sold their three and a half,
- 14:30Speaker 1: Marlins are three. I get it. It's not likely that
- 14:33Speaker 1: they're going to catch up to the Diamondbacks of the Padres,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but it's not out of the question that they could
- 14:38Speaker 1: do it. So it's funny their lack of being able
- 14:43Speaker 1: to sell it the deadline might actually like keep them
- 14:46Speaker 1: close in the wildcard rains right.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Keep them relevant of course. Yeah.
- 14:51Speaker 4: I mean the Hunter Green thing is oh god, that's killer.
- 14:55Speaker 4: I mean, I love, I want this got to be healthy.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Him and Chase Burns together are going to be absolute
- 15:00Speaker 4: dynamic duo.
- 15:01Speaker 1: There.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah, they're there, they're there.
- 15:04Speaker 4: But again, when there's three or four teams in front,
- 15:07Speaker 4: there's a lot that has to go. But again we've
- 15:11Speaker 4: I've said this over and over. If you worry about yourself,
- 15:13Speaker 4: you go on a fifteen game, twelve and three or
- 15:17Speaker 4: a thirteen or yeah, or a thirteen and two like
- 15:20Speaker 4: something crazy, you're going to be right back in it.
- 15:23Speaker 2: There. Do they have the firepower? I'm not sure.
- 15:27Speaker 4: You know, they got to win these close games. South
- 15:29Speaker 4: Stewart has been phenomenal. Eli de la Cruz keep on
- 15:32Speaker 4: kind of getting there. He's going to be a superstar eventually.
- 15:35Speaker 4: And until he figures just a little bit more out.
- 15:38Speaker 4: A couple guys got injured, Steer Matty McClain man, we
- 15:42Speaker 4: need we like I say, I'm on the team, they
- 15:44Speaker 4: need him to get going more. I mean, I think
- 15:47Speaker 4: the injury bug has got to this team. But again,
- 15:50Speaker 4: with Tito Francono over there, there is no way I
- 15:53Speaker 4: would say this team is ever out.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Hot corner time. Let's hit the Braves for a moment.
- 16:03Speaker 1: The fan base Braves Country has been livid in regards
- 16:08Speaker 1: to their trade deadline. As far as the on field production,
- 16:12Speaker 1: pretty good. They've won fifteen of twenty since the All
- 16:14Speaker 1: Star Break. They've won eight games in a row, so
- 16:18Speaker 1: they're fighting for one of those by spots in the
- 16:21Speaker 1: National League. Right they've got a chance at picking up
- 16:23Speaker 1: a bye. You know them, the Brewers and the Dodgers
- 16:26Speaker 1: seem to be the teams the most in the mix here.
- 16:28Speaker 1: But they pummeled Miami eleven three and they swept them.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Akunya hit two home runs. Brad, curious to get your
- 16:34Speaker 1: thoughts on the Braves now and the Braves in October.
- 16:38Speaker 1: It's great to go on a run like this. I
- 16:40Speaker 1: think the Braves are one of the best teams in baseball.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I think most people would agree with that. Do you
- 16:44Speaker 1: think that the rotation will be enough? And we did
- 16:48Speaker 1: learn that they were looking into Schoogle. They would have
- 16:50Speaker 1: given up guys like aj Smith, Shauber and Jare Ritchie.
- 16:53Speaker 1: That was included in Ken's notes that he just spoke
- 16:56Speaker 1: to us about they went for him, They went for
- 16:58Speaker 1: de Grom. They didn't really like anyone else. I mean,
- 17:00Speaker 1: they like Tyler Maley. So he's gonna start for them
- 17:03Speaker 1: against the Yankees to open up that series. But where
- 17:06Speaker 1: are you at with the Braves.
- 17:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think it's gonna be interesting to see.
- 17:09Speaker 6: I think obviously you have number one with Sale, he's
- 17:11Speaker 6: gonna pitch the first game. You hope you get the
- 17:12Speaker 6: win from there. But from there, Bryce Elder really good
- 17:15Speaker 6: young pitcher. He's had a couple of really good years
- 17:18Speaker 6: these last couple of years, so you got to think
- 17:19Speaker 6: he's gonna pitch Game two. But once again, I think
- 17:22Speaker 6: it goes down to their bullpen. I think they're gonna
- 17:24Speaker 6: be more of a the Star is gonna go out
- 17:25Speaker 6: there and hopefully get us one one and a half
- 17:28Speaker 6: two times through this lineup, and then we're gonna hand
- 17:29Speaker 6: the ball over to the bullpen. I think those guys
- 17:32Speaker 6: that they have down there can pitch a lot of
- 17:34Speaker 6: multiple innings in high leverage spots, and I think it's
- 17:37Speaker 6: just gonna be more of a try to piece the
- 17:39Speaker 6: games together from there. I don't think they're gonna lean
- 17:41Speaker 6: too heavily on the guys in the rotation outside of sale.
- 17:44Speaker 6: So I just think it's go out there, give us
- 17:46Speaker 6: as many outs as you can, and we'll get it
- 17:48Speaker 6: to the big arms in the bullpen and let the
- 17:50Speaker 6: offense kind of do their things. So I just it
- 17:51Speaker 6: always seems to be the way with the Braves. They
- 17:53Speaker 6: don't make these big, splashy trades, but they had these
- 17:55Speaker 6: guys that somehow show up in October and it's just
- 17:58Speaker 6: a team you can never right off.
- 18:00Speaker 5: And it's just funny.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Because they had a little a little bit of a
- 18:02Speaker 6: bad stretch here during the season, but they're one of
- 18:05Speaker 6: the best teams of baseball and they have been record
- 18:07Speaker 6: wised all season long. And I just think it goes
- 18:09Speaker 6: to show with the ebbs and flow of the season,
- 18:11Speaker 6: and I just think in October now it's such a
- 18:14Speaker 6: sprint to the finish that you get guys hot and
- 18:17Speaker 6: you get a couple of rotation guys and you're set
- 18:19Speaker 6: for October.
- 18:19Speaker 5: And that's basically what the Bravest seemed to do every single.
- 18:22Speaker 4: Yearn Yeah, I mean I think he said everything of
- 18:31Speaker 4: the nature. It's a team that you can't take lightly.
- 18:36Speaker 4: You don't hear much about Ronal o'cunya junior as much.
- 18:40Speaker 4: You know, it hasn't been you know, from injuries, but
- 18:43Speaker 4: a two homer game. He had that awesome home run
- 18:46Speaker 4: that you know, two outfielders ran into each other yesterday
- 18:49Speaker 4: and the ball popped out of the glove, which was
- 18:52Speaker 4: really cool way of hitting a home run. But yes,
- 18:55Speaker 4: he hasn't even hit his full stride. I mean, there's
- 18:59Speaker 4: guys there that have been there before. This is a
- 19:01Speaker 4: really veteran based team in my opinion, and I love
- 19:05Speaker 4: everything about that. Knowing that they're winning their games, They're
- 19:08Speaker 4: doing just fine. They're cruising right now. When I need
- 19:10Speaker 4: to step up, I think as a veteran team, I
- 19:14Speaker 4: think they will.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Okay, Yeah, this weekend they're going up against the Yanks.
- 19:19Speaker 1: They got Molly on Friday, Chris selgo Saturday. Just give
- 19:22Speaker 1: them an extra day there, and Grant Holmes, I mean
- 19:25Speaker 1: Todd when they won in twenty twenty one, it's not
- 19:28Speaker 1: like they were loaded with starters, so they had Freed
- 19:32Speaker 1: or with Freed hurt that year. I'm forgetting No Freed
- 19:35Speaker 1: was good. Charlie Morton got hurt during the World Series, right,
- 19:39Speaker 1: and then you had Tyler Anderson the Tyler Anderson. Am
- 19:44Speaker 1: I getting the name right there? Why am I blank?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Tyler Anderson was the left.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Now that's the gosh, I'm already forgetting the name. Somebody
- 19:52Speaker 1: in life, please help me out pretty quickly, or don't.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Who's the dude that freaking shined that year?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Somebody while you at the end.
- 20:01Speaker 4: No, but while you're thinking about that, they they just
- 20:04Speaker 4: it's about getting hot at the right time. It doesn't
- 20:06Speaker 4: matter the players you have. Once you get hot, you
- 20:09Speaker 4: want to step up, whether you're pitch or a hitter.
- 20:11Speaker 4: You kind of cling to that all my turn. Hey
- 20:14Speaker 4: you're next.
- 20:15Speaker 2: I know.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I hit the ground out and got the guy over.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Now pick me up. Those little things that all of
- 20:20Speaker 4: a sudden you're like, oh, yeah, we knew from the
- 20:21Speaker 4: get go this team was going to be like.
- 20:23Speaker 2: This, But no, you didn't.
- 20:24Speaker 4: They got hot and they figured out a way to
- 20:27Speaker 4: be the best team in Major League Baseball.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Yeah, Ian Anderson. See I was close, I kept saying,
- 20:33Speaker 1: Tyler ian Ian Anderson who at the time. I mean,
- 20:36Speaker 1: they had a lot of promise and just kind of
- 20:39Speaker 1: fell off and that was that was the time though,
- 20:41Speaker 1: when they needed him. Game one was more in Remember
- 20:43Speaker 1: he got hurt, Max Freed Game two, Ian Anderson Game three,
- 20:48Speaker 1: Freed pitched Game six when they won. In between that
- 20:51Speaker 1: bullpen game with Dylan Lee and then that was game four,
- 20:55Speaker 1: bullpen game with Tucker Davidson. That was game five, right,
- 20:59Speaker 1: So had I guess the Braves are looking at recent
- 21:02Speaker 1: pass and know it was five years ago, but it
- 21:03Speaker 1: wasn't fifty years ago, and said, hey, we kind of
- 21:06Speaker 1: had two and a half starters there come World Series
- 21:09Speaker 1: time and we still won.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure. And I know being there.
- 21:14Speaker 6: I was there in eighteen when they won the first
- 21:16Speaker 6: Division title and it was kind of the same thing.
- 21:18Speaker 6: It was just we're gonna piece something together here and
- 21:21Speaker 6: hopefully get through it. It was those guys were really young
- 21:24Speaker 6: at that time, so we struggle with the Dodgers in
- 21:26Speaker 6: that first series. But all these guys have gotten older
- 21:29Speaker 6: and they're still they're still there, so it's not like
- 21:32Speaker 6: they need to go find something crazy to find the
- 21:34Speaker 6: formula to win a World Series. It's like Todd said,
- 21:36Speaker 6: it's getting hot at the right time and having your
- 21:39Speaker 6: offense get enough runs and just get a couple innings
- 21:41Speaker 6: from each guy, and that's really all it comes down to.
- 21:44Speaker 5: You don't have to.
- 21:45Speaker 6: There's really I think the days of seeing the starter
- 21:47Speaker 6: go seven shutout in the playoffs is almost gone. So really,
- 21:51Speaker 6: when it comes down to starters, we keep talking about
- 21:53Speaker 6: starters over and over again, but we have rarely seen
- 21:56Speaker 6: teams throw their starters out there seven eight innings in
- 21:59Speaker 6: the playoffs anymore, or so I just think they they're
- 22:01Speaker 6: they're in a spot that they like, and the way
- 22:03Speaker 6: they do things in Atlanta is just what.
- 22:05Speaker 5: They've done forever. You go out there, you play the game.
- 22:07Speaker 6: We're gonna have the same lineup every day, and we
- 22:10Speaker 6: need our guys to hit and our pitchers to get
- 22:11Speaker 6: outs when they're when they're called. And it's kind of
- 22:13Speaker 6: been their formula, I feel like since the early nineties.
- 22:16Speaker 6: So it's really not much has changed in Atlanta.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're doing this, You're right, Todd Father, with
- 22:22Speaker 1: what eleven home runs this season from Ronald Acuna Junior.
- 22:25Speaker 1: So yeah, the whole thing with them has been, you know,
- 22:28Speaker 1: they've tried slow playing it at times because the first
- 22:31Speaker 1: time he came back from the major knee surgery, they
- 22:33Speaker 1: felt like they, you know, maybe he rushed. He's one
- 22:35Speaker 1: of those guys I will say that loves playing, he
- 22:38Speaker 1: loves being on the field. He's trying to raise his
- 22:40Speaker 1: hand and play winter ball.
- 22:41Speaker 4: All that, right, So they playing over the fall and winter.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Yeah, when they're like, I don't want touch of baseball
- 22:50Speaker 2: at all.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Slow down, slow down, but whatever, I mean, it doesn't matter.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Now we've got two months left in the regular season
- 22:57Speaker 1: and October coming through. Can we get the Ronald that
- 23:00Speaker 1: we're used to seeing here?
- 23:02Speaker 2: I hope. So it's good for baseball for sure.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, talking Orioles for a moment here, because we've got
- 23:08Speaker 1: our Orioles specialist today in Brad Brock. So tell me
- 23:10Speaker 1: where the teams at. We'll get to more of the
- 23:12Speaker 1: big picture in this next conversation, but tell me where
- 23:16Speaker 1: the team's at here. So zach Nato hit a big
- 23:18Speaker 1: three run homer helps the Angels take down the Orioles
- 23:21Speaker 1: in the game and in the series where we at
- 23:24Speaker 1: on Baltimore post trade deadline with some key guys gone.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think they they won this series.
- 23:30Speaker 6: That's all. That's the positives that come through that. With
- 23:33Speaker 6: a lot of emotions. I mean, all the players were
- 23:35Speaker 6: pretty candid about how emotional they were about everything that
- 23:38Speaker 6: was going on with the trade of Adley, and this
- 23:40Speaker 6: group has really been together for six, seven, eight years
- 23:43Speaker 6: now through the Miners and the Major so I just
- 23:46Speaker 6: think it's gonna be more of a long term answer.
- 23:48Speaker 6: It's gonna be you're gonna have to wait to see
- 23:50Speaker 6: the fifty games to kind of judge what group they
- 23:52Speaker 6: have left. I don't think it's gonna be a you know, one, two,
- 23:55Speaker 6: three series thing that you're gonna understand what kind of
- 23:58Speaker 6: team they have. There's just there's pieces missing right now.
- 24:02Speaker 6: There's been a bunch of injuries this year, so I mean,
- 24:04Speaker 6: at the end of the day, they're still there with
- 24:06Speaker 6: the standings and the American League is kind of allowing
- 24:08Speaker 6: that this year, So I think trading away of those pieces,
- 24:11Speaker 6: getting some of the prospects that they were pretty excited
- 24:13Speaker 6: about is exciting moving forward, But we just don't know
- 24:17Speaker 6: where it's going to leave this team for the rest
- 24:18Speaker 6: of the season. But standings are dictating that they're still
- 24:21Speaker 6: in it. But they have a couple of big series
- 24:23Speaker 6: coming up here against the Rangers and the Twins that
- 24:26Speaker 6: I think are really going to determine which direction this
- 24:28Speaker 6: team is going to move for the rest.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Of the year.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And yeah, they won this series against the Angels, dropped
- 24:33Speaker 1: the prior series, lost two out of three to the Phillies.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean Baltimore is still in the wildcard Max,
- 24:41Speaker 1: who you like it in the wildcard mix right now?
- 24:43Speaker 1: Todd Father, we went over this yesterday because Krats and
- 24:45Speaker 1: AJ were kind of making fun of it, like, well,
- 24:47Speaker 1: most of the wildcard contenders in the American League sold
- 24:50Speaker 1: or held.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:53Speaker 4: I don't like Baltimore, that's for sure. I mean Lesson
- 24:57Speaker 4: and I don't want to meet. I don't want to
- 24:59Speaker 4: come off rude or arrogant. But Scotty, you know how
- 25:03Speaker 4: I was a couple of years ago they should have
- 25:05Speaker 4: got rid of all their prospects. Then they got a
- 25:07Speaker 4: plethora of guys and I'm like, wow, they're they're doing
- 25:10Speaker 4: some stuff and now, oh man, here we go. I'm like,
- 25:14Speaker 4: you know, it is, it is what it is. Love
- 25:16Speaker 4: Peter Alonzo. He's one of my favorite players that ever
- 25:19Speaker 4: play with. I like the Red Sox. I like either
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yankees or raised Red Sox, whoever wins that division. The
- 25:27Speaker 4: other two I think are getting in and then we yeah,
- 25:32Speaker 4: this one, this one's tough because there's a whole bunch
- 25:35Speaker 4: of teams. Did the Blue Jays find a way?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Yes? What do you think run?
- 25:45Speaker 1: They might finish stronger.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I know they don't count it out Mariners, I'm
- 25:50Speaker 2: not sure. It's hard.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Show me the money, all right.
- 26:07Speaker 1: So let's go over this article from Brittany Gioli and
- 26:09Speaker 1: the title is competitive windows don't always cooperate. MLB teams
- 26:13Speaker 1: should act like it. Apparently it really resonated within the sport.
- 26:18Speaker 1: There are many people that work in front offices besides
- 26:20Speaker 1: just the leader of the front office or the owner, right,
- 26:23Speaker 1: And sometimes you work for a team and you're like,
- 26:25Speaker 1: are we going for now? I thought we were waiting
- 26:28Speaker 1: for this moment? And it's fickle too, like it could
- 26:31Speaker 1: pop up, it could go away, it could come back again. Right. So,
- 26:35Speaker 1: using the Blue Jays example, Todd fil they made it
- 26:37Speaker 1: to the World Series. He got as close as you
- 26:39Speaker 1: could get to winning a World Series. And this year
- 26:42Speaker 1: things are on the rocks. They might not make it.
- 26:44Speaker 1: That doesn't mean that the window doesn't open back up again.
- 26:46Speaker 2: I guess the.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Point is when you look at where you're at during
- 26:48Speaker 1: a season, you got to push chips in. Sometimes the
- 26:51Speaker 1: Red Sox are a good example. Of that, right, they
- 26:54Speaker 1: pick up Addley Rutchman, we talked about them earlier. But
- 26:56Speaker 1: also even a guy like Eric Miller, and you trade
- 26:59Speaker 1: away Marcelo My I haven't seen a ton of him
- 27:02Speaker 1: in the big leagues yet, and the Red Sox decided,
- 27:03Speaker 1: you know what, we have a chance to get a
- 27:05Speaker 1: guy who can really help us in the playoffs. The
- 27:09Speaker 1: San Diego Padres. We talked about them a few times
- 27:12Speaker 1: this week.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Todd. Yeah, I mean the teams.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Will look at them and be like, oh, well, they
- 27:17Speaker 1: just traded all their dudes away, so they can't stay competitive.
- 27:19Speaker 1: We've been saying that for a while now. Have they
- 27:21Speaker 1: won a World Series with it?
- 27:23Speaker 3: No?
- 27:23Speaker 1: But but have they stayed competitive the whole way through
- 27:27Speaker 1: despite trading away a lot of what they have in
- 27:30Speaker 1: the cupboard cupboard?
- 27:31Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, they definitely have. And I think they're they've
- 27:38Speaker 4: given it a good try. I mean, you think about
- 27:40Speaker 4: the best closer in baseball in Mason Miller, they picked
- 27:45Speaker 4: him up. I just love everything about GERROLI. I think
- 27:50Speaker 4: she's hysterical. I think she understands, you know, when to
- 27:55Speaker 4: be serious and what not to. She talks about small
- 27:57Speaker 4: market teams and I think for me, This is what
- 28:00Speaker 4: I say all the time, like why why can't they
- 28:03Speaker 4: make a splash?
- 28:04Speaker 2: Some of them have.
- 28:04Speaker 4: But at the same time, you can't blame it on
- 28:07Speaker 4: being a small market team when everybody has an opportunity
- 28:09Speaker 4: to pick up everybody else. So the deals they make,
- 28:12Speaker 4: they can get rid of some prospects, if not some
- 28:14Speaker 4: of the best, to get you know, some veteran or
- 28:17Speaker 4: a guy that's been in Major League Baseball and knows
- 28:19Speaker 4: what he's doing to help the team out, club morale, culture,
- 28:23Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff. There's no excuse. And I
- 28:26Speaker 4: think in the article she kind of understands that and
- 28:28Speaker 4: hits that.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Very well, Yeah, Brad, I mean we're gonna rely on
- 28:34Speaker 1: you for the Orioles help. Here Brittany is dialed in
- 28:36Speaker 1: on the Nationals and the Orioles among other teams, but
- 28:39Speaker 1: that's like her area, right, And she pointed out, you know,
- 28:42Speaker 1: four years ago, the Orioles said, hey, it's time for liftoff.
- 28:46Speaker 1: They did the five year scrap it all down to
- 28:49Speaker 1: the absolute studs, go through the pain, one hundred plus
- 28:53Speaker 1: lost seasons, and then I feel like the window opened
- 28:57Speaker 1: a little bit sooner than they thought, and then it's
- 29:00Speaker 1: not closed but it's never like banged completely open and
- 29:03Speaker 1: put them in a position where they feel really comfortable.
- 29:05Speaker 1: And they have not won a playoff game during this run,
- 29:08Speaker 1: So what's the what's the feeling out there among the
- 29:12Speaker 1: fan base. I'm trying to focus on them too, Like
- 29:14Speaker 1: the fan base was waiting. They were promised something, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: it's not like they haven't been competitive, but you look
- 29:19Speaker 1: at really one shiny season and then the rest has
- 29:21Speaker 1: looked disappointing.
- 29:24Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think that's kind of the sentiment from
- 29:26Speaker 6: all the fan bases. That's just disappointing. It's frustrating. They're
- 29:29Speaker 6: just where are we going? And now it's back kind
- 29:32Speaker 6: of to the you know, Fangrass came out this week
- 29:34Speaker 6: and now they have the number two ring system, but
- 29:36Speaker 6: I think they're just kind of sick of hearing about
- 29:38Speaker 6: having the top rated farm system and not having wins
- 29:41Speaker 6: at the big league level. They went out, they got
- 29:43Speaker 6: peda lines of this offseason. They signed Chris Bassett, so
- 29:46Speaker 6: they're started. They put more money on the field, and
- 29:48Speaker 6: the results just haven't been there, and I just think
- 29:50Speaker 6: they're just kind of disillusioned. Almost at this point, it's
- 29:54Speaker 6: you've told us this one plan that's supposed to happen.
- 29:56Speaker 6: They go out, they win the division. You think it's
- 29:58Speaker 6: going to be this five year period where they win
- 30:01Speaker 6: the division every year they have a shot to go
- 30:02Speaker 6: to the World Series, and they backtracked every single year.
- 30:05Speaker 6: So I just think it's at this point they don't
- 30:07Speaker 6: know what, like what they're saying, is it true, is
- 30:11Speaker 6: it false? Like I think they're just kind of and
- 30:13Speaker 6: especially after this week, I think it's really hard to
- 30:15Speaker 6: get a feel for what the fan base is feeling
- 30:17Speaker 6: because I just think they're all over the place. They
- 30:19Speaker 6: don't know what to think, they don't know what the feel,
- 30:21Speaker 6: and I don't know if the GM and the front
- 30:23Speaker 6: office is helping them at all, because I think it's
- 30:25Speaker 6: kind of like a, well, we kind.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Of reloaded, we're good moving.
- 30:27Speaker 6: Forward, but you said that five years ago and now
- 30:30Speaker 6: we're at the same spot we were even before that.
- 30:33Speaker 6: So it's just kind of a very confusing and frustrating
- 30:36Speaker 6: part in Birdland right now.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, the team feels like it's in the middle, and
- 30:42Speaker 1: even leading up to the deadline, Brad, I don't think
- 30:45Speaker 1: anybody really had a good feeling of where they were going.
- 30:48Speaker 1: And I get it your sub five hundred nine and
- 30:51Speaker 1: by game or two whatever it was at the time,
- 30:52Speaker 1: four games you should sell in most cases, although this
- 30:56Speaker 1: year the Ale wild Card is going to just be
- 31:00Speaker 1: at least the third one, probably an up for grab
- 31:02Speaker 1: situation for Baltimore. I guess my problem is that sometimes
- 31:08Speaker 1: I feel as if the comments have more to do
- 31:11Speaker 1: with what they can get back into trade versus what
- 31:13Speaker 1: they want to do. You know, I'll try to This
- 31:16Speaker 1: is probably not a good analogy, but you know how,
- 31:18Speaker 1: sometimes it's like a pitcher is going I'm going to
- 31:20Speaker 1: use my best stuff to get this guy out, or
- 31:22Speaker 1: I'm going to play to the weaknesses of the hitter,
- 31:25Speaker 1: and that could be two different things.
- 31:27Speaker 2: To me.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I kind of feel like that with the front office,
- 31:29Speaker 1: where it's like, wait, are you going to play to
- 31:31Speaker 1: your strength in your time to shine as a team
- 31:33Speaker 1: when you're self evaluating, or are you going to say,
- 31:36Speaker 1: what does the market think of my players? They like them, Okay,
- 31:38Speaker 1: I'll trade a few of them away. And what that
- 31:40Speaker 1: does is, yeah, it adds up prospect to the prospect
- 31:43Speaker 1: covered or even the major league team, right, the projected
- 31:46Speaker 1: wins and all that, But does it add up to
- 31:48Speaker 1: where you are at as an organization right now.
- 31:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that's a great way of putting it.
- 31:53Speaker 6: It kind of put it almost feels like they're playing
- 31:55Speaker 6: on their heels as opposed to making the moves to
- 31:58Speaker 6: be aggressive to make their team better.
- 32:00Speaker 5: And I think ADLEI the Alley trade was a perfect example.
- 32:02Speaker 6: It's it was, we're going to put feelers out there
- 32:05Speaker 6: and if we get a deal that blows us away,
- 32:07Speaker 6: then we'll make it. It wasn't like we're going to
- 32:09Speaker 6: add to this team and stick to that plan regardless
- 32:12Speaker 6: of where the record's at, because the thing is a
- 32:14Speaker 6: lot of these guys were under contract moving into next
- 32:16Speaker 6: season too, So even if you were able to add
- 32:18Speaker 6: at the deadline, this is going to help for this
- 32:20Speaker 6: year and moving forward. But I just think of that
- 32:23Speaker 6: at the end of the day, they wanted to do
- 32:25Speaker 6: a shake up, and I think trading Ali kind of
- 32:27Speaker 6: put a stamp on this era of baseball in Baltimore
- 32:30Speaker 6: that was supposed to be the you know, comeback after
- 32:33Speaker 6: kind of tanking there those couple of years. And uh,
- 32:36Speaker 6: the way your analogy was perfect, though, I just think
- 32:38Speaker 6: it's a lot of times, well let's see what we
- 32:40Speaker 6: can get as opposed to let's go out and get
- 32:42Speaker 6: it and try to win. So it's it's definitely got
- 32:44Speaker 6: to be a different, uh, you know, just philosophy that
- 32:48Speaker 6: they might need to start using now if they're really
- 32:50Speaker 6: going to start trying to win ball games at the
- 32:52Speaker 6: biggest level.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Well, then you know, I'll ask this question of both
- 32:56Speaker 1: of you. Todd, First, you both know the race pretty
- 32:59Speaker 1: well in the American League East. They picked up a
- 33:01Speaker 1: catcher who can hit. Liam Hicks actually hasn't caught as much,
- 33:04Speaker 1: but a catcher who can hit. Right, They picked up
- 33:07Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta. Not a good first start, but I think
- 33:10Speaker 1: most people feel as if that was a nice pickup
- 33:12Speaker 1: for the team to add to the rotation. And then
- 33:14Speaker 1: Tyler Wells maybe yeah, maybe Todd father's disagreeing with me here.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Do you feel like, okay, well, do you feel like
- 33:22Speaker 1: the Rays did what they should have done at the
- 33:25Speaker 1: trade deadline? And do you think this is maybe the
- 33:27Speaker 1: best chance for the Rays to win a World Series
- 33:30Speaker 1: title in a while. Yes, they were in a World
- 33:32Speaker 1: Series in twenty twenty a COVID shortened season, a little
- 33:35Speaker 1: bit of a different world against LA. But right now,
- 33:38Speaker 1: you look at the Rays they're in control of the division.
- 33:41Speaker 1: The American League is down this year. They've got star
- 33:43Speaker 1: power in the rotation and at the top of the lineup.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Do you feel like the Rays did everything they could
- 33:50Speaker 1: at a time when right now the organization is really humming?
- 33:54Speaker 2: Yeah? Is this a case of less is more?
- 33:57Speaker 4: They were doing so well, did they really need to
- 34:00Speaker 4: make that many moves?
- 34:01Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah, of course you need to bolster your lineup
- 34:03Speaker 2: when needed. Definitely. I'm not saying they shouldn't have.
- 34:06Speaker 4: But the way they were playing, is is it something
- 34:10Speaker 4: that maybe we should have just left left the way
- 34:13Speaker 4: it was, you know, maybe picked up a reliever or
- 34:16Speaker 4: a pitcher there, which they did. I don't know. I
- 34:19Speaker 4: think they got better for sure. I love Liam Hicks,
- 34:23Speaker 4: love him. You know, he wasn't really catching, as you said,
- 34:25Speaker 4: he was kind of the backup, maybe even to the
- 34:27Speaker 4: backup over there with the Marlins.
- 34:30Speaker 2: But yeah, Freddy Peroulta, I mean, this is a team.
- 34:34Speaker 4: That can figure things out with a guy who's been struggling,
- 34:37Speaker 4: and I think once they do, hopefully he comes back
- 34:41Speaker 4: and is the number one guy that he was with
- 34:44Speaker 4: the Brewers at some time. So is it a case
- 34:47Speaker 4: then less there's more. Is this going to help or hurt?
- 34:50Speaker 4: It should help, But at the same time, the Race
- 34:53Speaker 4: have a good culture there and good understanding of how
- 34:55Speaker 4: to win with the team they've had. But again, they
- 34:59Speaker 4: did pick up some really good nuggets there, so we'll
- 35:01Speaker 4: see how it goes.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Let's hit on Deck presented by a Fox one and
- 35:09Speaker 1: look at some games this weekend you can find on
- 35:11Speaker 1: Fox and the Fox one app. So there's that Guardian's
- 35:14Speaker 1: White Sox, a little back and forth that will also
- 35:17Speaker 1: include Ozzy Gian in the booth for an inning. AJS
- 35:20Speaker 1: on that game. Ken's on that game. I want to
- 35:22Speaker 1: start actually with the Orioles and Rangers. First, it's Kyle
- 35:25Speaker 1: Bradish scheduled to go against Jacob de Gram. That's a
- 35:28Speaker 1: pretty nice looking pitching matchup. And where are the Oriols
- 35:31Speaker 1: at with their rotation? I know they locked in Bradish
- 35:34Speaker 1: and Shane Boz for the long term Brad, so this
- 35:37Speaker 1: is one of the good ones there.
- 35:39Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, Kyle brad As she came back from
- 35:42Speaker 6: Tom and John looking really great and they locked him up.
- 35:44Speaker 6: It's one of the first times Oros have ever done
- 35:46Speaker 6: that in team history. So to get him solidified here
- 35:49Speaker 6: for five years after this year. He's a great move,
- 35:52Speaker 6: but the starting rotation has been the strength of this team.
- 35:54Speaker 6: It's been a surprising lack of offense for this team
- 35:57Speaker 6: so far. And Kyle bradsh is kind of at the
- 35:59Speaker 6: head that Trevor Rodgers has been pitching phenomenal for two months.
- 36:03Speaker 5: He went through a little bit of a.
- 36:04Speaker 6: Stretch early on in the season where he struggled, but
- 36:07Speaker 6: he's right back on the top of his game. So
- 36:09Speaker 6: it's been a very heavy starting pitching strength for this
- 36:13Speaker 6: Orioles team, and Kyle Bradis is right at the top
- 36:15Speaker 6: of that. His stuff is among the best in the
- 36:18Speaker 6: big leagues. He throws unbelievable breaking balls and it's he
- 36:22Speaker 6: can just spin the ball like anybody I've ever seen.
- 36:24Speaker 6: So that's an interesting matchup with de Gram on Saturday,
- 36:27Speaker 6: that's for sure. You get two of the better stuff
- 36:29Speaker 6: guys in the league. And Jacob to the ground. We
- 36:31Speaker 6: all know what he's gonna do and has been doing
- 36:33Speaker 6: it for a long time now.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and then top five that you get the two
- 36:36Speaker 1: players in my mind who I think the Mets should
- 36:38Speaker 1: not have let go facing off. That's Pete Alonzo, who's
- 36:42Speaker 1: quietly putting together a Pete Alonzo season. I mean, he
- 36:45Speaker 1: is right, he's probably gonna end up with thirty five
- 36:47Speaker 1: forty homers, one thirty ops plus. I bet he'll end
- 36:51Speaker 1: up with I think he's into the one twenties right now.
- 36:53Speaker 1: And then he's going up against Brandon Nimo, who leads
- 36:55Speaker 1: the Rangers and hits Ribby's in some other categories. So
- 36:59Speaker 1: those two were doing their thing.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Yeah, and then you take it guys like Plays Alexander
- 37:04Speaker 4: and Gunner Henderson. It's like you gotta find the team
- 37:08Speaker 4: to come together and everybody clicking on all cylinders. One
- 37:11Speaker 4: guy can't just keep doing it, so you know, there's
- 37:15Speaker 4: that happy medium you got to find. And a couple
- 37:17Speaker 4: guys just haven't really stepped up the way that you know,
- 37:20Speaker 4: us fans and people that love the teams have seen before.
- 37:24Speaker 2: So that's all.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Yeah, one more game that you can also find on
- 37:29Speaker 1: Fox and Fox one app Fox depending on where you are,
- 37:31Speaker 1: but Fox one App's got all these games that were
- 37:33Speaker 1: going over if you've got a subscription. So Jackson job
- 37:37Speaker 1: is going to make his debut. It's been fourteen months.
- 37:40Speaker 1: He was one of the top prospects in the sport
- 37:43Speaker 1: and he's coming back from the good old classic Tommy
- 37:46Speaker 1: John surgery, top father. So fourteen months. But this is
- 37:49Speaker 1: what Ken was talking about with us earlier in his segment.
- 37:52Speaker 1: He said, here comes Jackson job here and then Drew Anderson,
- 37:55Speaker 1: who's pitched pretty well out of the bullpen for the
- 37:57Speaker 1: Tigers and is showing some swinging myths. They've wanted to
- 38:00Speaker 1: develop him into a starter, so they put those two
- 38:02Speaker 1: into the rotation. Of course, they subtracted Trek's schoogl in
- 38:05Speaker 1: Casey Mize. But the Tigers can't say it this way.
- 38:10Speaker 1: They look at the third wildcard and they go, is
- 38:14Speaker 1: it crazy to think that we could sell again and
- 38:17Speaker 1: then at least catch up enough to be a third
- 38:20Speaker 1: wildcard like we did a couple of years ago in
- 38:22Speaker 1: twenty four when they sold.
- 38:25Speaker 4: If there was a manager that could figure that out,
- 38:27Speaker 4: there's one in aj Hinch, for sure. He's he's a
- 38:30Speaker 4: mastermind and understands his players. They got rid of two
- 38:33Speaker 4: of their top guns. It's going to be very hard.
- 38:38Speaker 4: But guess what, as you're a player and a team
- 38:40Speaker 4: that have an opportunity, But are you gonna just sit
- 38:42Speaker 4: there and lay down?
- 38:42Speaker 1: No?
- 38:43Speaker 4: I mean, if you're a Tiger team that understands. You know,
- 38:45Speaker 4: we got rid of some guys, but guess what, we
- 38:47Speaker 4: still have guys that have been here and understand our
- 38:50Speaker 4: culture and atmosphere and what we need to do to win.
- 38:53Speaker 4: You know, they just they just kick some butt over
- 38:56Speaker 4: over his last couple of days, and you know they're
- 38:59Speaker 4: not going to go down without the.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:02Speaker 6: I just think when you look at this offense, they
- 39:03Speaker 6: didn't subtract any pieces, and this team scores a lot
- 39:06Speaker 6: of runs. So yes, you subtract two guys from the
- 39:08Speaker 6: starting rotation, but they obviously felt that the guys they
- 39:11Speaker 6: have stepping in are gonna be able to do the job.
- 39:13Speaker 6: And Kennon mentioned also before they're second in the American
- 39:16Speaker 6: League and run differential. So it's just something wasn't adding
- 39:20Speaker 6: up early on. And you know, maybe analytics is kind
- 39:23Speaker 6: of right on this team that they should be performing
- 39:26Speaker 6: better than they are, and even losing those guys, you
- 39:28Speaker 6: put these guys in the rotation and you just got
- 39:30Speaker 6: to let the offense keep doing their thing. They got
- 39:32Speaker 6: a ton of bats from one through nine in that lineup,
- 39:35Speaker 6: and they've got some guys who've been through playoff races before.
- 39:38Speaker 6: So I mean the American League is did the standings
- 39:41Speaker 6: are kind of dictating where they're at and they're right
- 39:43Speaker 6: in it, so it's just kind of go out there,
- 39:45Speaker 6: play the games, don't worry about the standings, and kind
- 39:47Speaker 6: of see where we fall come September and.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Then the Marquee matchup this weekend at least on Saturday,
- 39:54Speaker 1: is Gavin Williams and the Guardians taking on Anthony k
- 39:58Speaker 1: and the White Sox. Todd Fathered. Did you have any
- 40:00Speaker 1: interactions with Gahan when you were on the White Sox.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Did you get to see him at all? Was he
- 40:05Speaker 1: around at all or not? Really?
- 40:08Speaker 2: Rarely? Rarely? Okay, Well, he's a character we love. I
- 40:12Speaker 2: love him. I thought he was an awesome guy.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, very funny and he'll get honored the
- 40:18Speaker 1: numbers getting retired this weekend. What about you, Brad, did
- 40:21Speaker 1: you have any run ins with Ozzie in life?
- 40:23Speaker 5: We got him on the interd you never did.
- 40:25Speaker 6: Just seeing some of the clips and you know, watch
- 40:27Speaker 6: him getting tossed and videos and stuff like that, so
- 40:29Speaker 6: it seems like it seems like a great player's manager though,
- 40:32Speaker 6: even though some of those clips seem a little crazy,
- 40:34Speaker 6: but he had his guys backs everybody that talked that
- 40:37Speaker 6: was on those teams. Anytime you see a clip talking
- 40:39Speaker 6: about Ozzie, they said that if you went out there
- 40:41Speaker 6: and do what you were supposed to do, he had
- 40:43Speaker 6: your back, and that's all you can really ask for
- 40:44Speaker 6: from a manager.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:46Speaker 1: You know what's funny is I mean most managers nowadays
- 40:50Speaker 1: are in the position, Brad, where they'll have your back
- 40:54Speaker 1: publicly to the media. They won't necessarily have your back
- 40:58Speaker 1: with the front office. The front office has a lot
- 40:59Speaker 1: more then back in the day when someone like Ozzie
- 41:03Speaker 1: was running the dugout. It's funny Ozzie was kind of
- 41:06Speaker 1: the reverse, right. Ozzie will fight to the death with
- 41:08Speaker 1: the front office and tell them, hey, this is my guy,
- 41:11Speaker 1: you're not trading him or we're not optioning this player.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Publicly to the media. Sometimes he would roast him, but
- 41:18Speaker 1: the guys liked it. I mean, at least for me.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I'm sitting next to AJ and he just sometimes it
- 41:23Speaker 1: was funny, right, because jokes are mixed in. The only
- 41:26Speaker 1: person I can comp right now that does even as
- 41:28Speaker 1: semblance of this that I can think of is Pat Murphy.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Sometimes he'll roast a player a little bit publicly, but
- 41:33Speaker 1: it'll do it in a fun way where you either
- 41:35Speaker 1: kind of making fun of him, like you know, this
- 41:38Speaker 1: guy's this guy's short, or he kind of stinks lately,
- 41:40Speaker 1: but I'm going to talk to him and we're going
- 41:42Speaker 1: to get him back on, you know, Like they do
- 41:43Speaker 1: it in a way that I think, psychology wise, still works.
- 41:48Speaker 1: Most managers are too worried about that nowadays, right because
- 41:51Speaker 1: they're too worried about a clip going viral that they
- 41:53Speaker 1: call the player out.
- 41:55Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think you knew where you stood with him,
- 41:58Speaker 6: So I kind of respect that really, Like either he's
- 42:00Speaker 6: gonna say to your face or to the media, but
- 42:02Speaker 6: you're gonna find out one way or the other. And
- 42:04Speaker 6: you want guys that are gonna fight back, And to me,
- 42:06Speaker 6: that's the guys you want on your team. And I
- 42:08Speaker 6: think that's how he kind of wea guys out. If
- 42:10Speaker 6: you couldn't handle what he was gonna say, you know,
- 42:12Speaker 6: to the media, then maybe you weren't one of the
- 42:14Speaker 6: guys he wanted on the team. And I respect that,
- 42:16Speaker 6: and I think that's an awesome trait to have.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Yeah, So that's the White Sox side. And then real
- 42:23Speaker 1: quick on the Guardians, Todd Father. I mean, I think
- 42:27Speaker 1: Joe Adell could do some things for them. Down the stretcher.
- 42:29Speaker 1: They made two moves. They actually did more than I
- 42:31Speaker 1: thought they were going to do, and we'll see. I
- 42:33Speaker 1: know Foster Griffin didn't have a great first start, but
- 42:36Speaker 1: we'll see how he fits into the rotation. The thing
- 42:38Speaker 1: is teams like the Guardians picking up Griffin, the Rays
- 42:42Speaker 1: picking up Freddy Peralta, the Brewers picking up dustin May.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Those are three of the pitching machines organizationally right now.
- 42:49Speaker 1: You got to give them a little bit of time
- 42:51Speaker 1: to work with a new arm. If there's something they
- 42:53Speaker 1: want to suggest, it's not necessarily going to happen on
- 42:55Speaker 1: day one. Same thing with the Padres in Casey mis.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:59Speaker 4: And for the Guardians, you know, they just got to
- 43:02Speaker 4: hit more, and I think that's been their big buggaboo
- 43:05Speaker 4: is getting after it with the bats. They've been really
- 43:08Speaker 4: struggling there and there's still an opportunity for them to
- 43:11Speaker 4: you know, win that division and find a way, which
- 43:14Speaker 4: they did last year. So don't count this team out,
- 43:17Speaker 4: you know, playoff team for sure, but don't count them
- 43:19Speaker 4: out of you know, taking over that division too, because
- 43:22Speaker 4: the White Sox haven't been there in a long time.
- 43:24Speaker 4: They could fizzle. I'm not saying they won't. A lot
- 43:27Speaker 4: of time left for UH to make some noise.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Yeah, and they have on hell Hanau who they just
