- 0:00Padres and the Cubs as they will go out of boy Dansby Swanson.
- 0:04Did you see his performance in the field yesterday?
- 0:07The 2 plays he made, I think it was the 4th inning, the infield
- 0:10was in, he went and he stole a hit and then the throw, the
- 0:16throw and the catch when he went out to shallow left center,
- 0:19caught the ball, contorted his body somehow turned around and
- 0:24and threw the ball back into the catcher.
- 0:26But just a terrific play by Dansby Swanson, who after all is
- 0:30a Gold Glover. I'm not sure he'll be one this
- 0:32year, but certainly has earned them in the past.
- 0:34And man, oh man, he looked like that at that point yesterday.
- 0:37So Cappy coming up, Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy who
- 0:41joins us each and every week. We'll do some Cubs with Cap.
- 0:44We'll do some Bears with Cap. We'll have a fun conversation
- 0:47with Cap if we're able to run him down and get the latest on
- 0:50how he sees game #2 it will be Kittredge to start ending number
- 0:56one and where they will go after that.
- 0:58Let's get to him. He joins us from Chicago.
- 1:01Cap, what a what a city to be in.
- 1:03It's always a great city to be in.
- 1:04Probably my favorite city in the country, truth be told.
- 1:08But it's got to be extra special here today.
- 1:09Game #2 and away we go. Capra, how are you?
- 1:13I am awesome and I am going back to Vegas tomorrow.
- 1:18That's right. I forgot about that.
- 1:20Yeah. They're they're bang, bang, turn
- 1:22around, unpack, pack again and off you go.
- 1:26And you're going to see the Eagles at this fear, which will
- 1:28be fascinating. Can't wait to hear about that.
- 1:30How was, how was? Did you go to the game or you
- 1:34flew home before the game, did you not?
- 1:36I I was there from Thursday night until Sunday morning, and
- 1:41then I flew out Sunday morning at a 7:00 AM flight.
- 1:45So you'd get home and time, plenty of time to watch the
- 1:48game. Seemed like there were a lot of
- 1:49Bears fans. I know you're at the South end
- 1:51of the Strip, the Mandalay Bay area.
- 1:54Did Bears fans take over that part of Las Vegas?
- 1:57Oh my God, you can't imagine how many Bears fans were all over
- 2:01like Friday. So I was on the air at 4:00 AM
- 2:05Friday. So Thursday we got to the hotel
- 2:07about 10:45 at night. By the time I got checked in,
- 2:12got to my room, the whole deal, it was like 1120.
- 2:16So I got to be on the air at 4:00, we meet at 3:30.
- 2:19So I just stayed up all my playing blackjack.
- 2:22How'd you do? I walked out of there with their
- 2:25money. Good.
- 2:27I had I between that and then I played an 8 leg parlay on
- 2:33Saturday in the sports book. I had UCLA plus the points I had
- 2:39Kansas State was my best bet of the weekend.
- 2:41I had a whole bunch of them and my esteemed director of content
- 2:46who I work for used to be my executive producer, Danny
- 2:50Zetterman said. Dude, you got to put Kansas in
- 2:53there. They're going to crush.
- 2:55So, so I tag it, that's my 8th play and I put it in, but I put
- 3:00them in on the money line. They take the lead with, I don't
- 3:03know, 40 seconds left. And I'm, you know what?
- 3:06The parlay paid how much, $11,000.
- 3:10And they gave up a freaking score in the final seconds and
- 3:14my parlay died. What did you think of Mandalay
- 3:16Bay Sports book? It's not my favorite.
- 3:19No, it's it's fine. It's fine.
- 3:22It's fine. Yeah, I'm at the win tomorrow.
- 3:26And that's going to ratchet up significantly.
- 3:29Yeah, Oh yeah. I love the wins.
- 3:30My spot. That's my favorite hotel.
- 3:32And so I will be in their sports book.
- 3:35And I'm hoping that the Chicago National League ball club has
- 3:40advanced because I think they're going to play at noon on
- 3:43Saturday against the Brewers, which would be 10 AM in Vegas.
- 3:48And I would just go down on the sports book and watch my
- 3:51cubbies. That would be amazing.
- 3:54Cap yesterday watched most of the ball game but was heading
- 3:57home during the final ninth inning.
- 3:59So I was listening to Pat and Ron on the radio.
- 4:02And I just love baseball on the radio.
- 4:03It's so good. But at the end, they're doing
- 4:06their little, you know, kind of recap.
- 4:08And I heard Pat Hughes say this was the best Wrigley environment
- 4:13he has ever seen. He saw World Series.
- 4:17He said that crowd was as charged up as he has ever heard
- 4:21before. Now, it's been a long time since
- 4:23Wrigley has hosted a playoff game.
- 4:25But I was just shocked to hear that from not just any guy, not
- 4:28some schmoes, not, not some idiot on TikTok from Pat Hughes
- 4:31who's been around for a while. Tell us about the environment
- 4:34for people that were there because it sounded loud.
- 4:37But it sounded like it was pretty special yesterday
- 4:38afternoon. Yeah, I don't think I would Co
- 4:42sign that it was the most charged up that he's ever heard
- 4:46it because the most charged up was game five of the World
- 4:51Series when Jon Lester and Geraldus Chapman combined to
- 4:55keep it alive and get it back to Cleveland.
- 4:58That was electric. Carrie Wood hitting a home run
- 5:01to tie the game in game seven in O3 was the loudest I had heard
- 5:07it until probably Miguel Montero's Grand Slam off Joe
- 5:12Blanton in the NLCS deep into the Wrigley night in right
- 5:16field. But bases loaded.
- 5:18He missed the slider that hung in the middle and he threw him
- 5:21the exact same pitch and hung again.
- 5:24And Montero didn't miss the second one and crushed it 30
- 5:27rows deep, I mean, to the top of the bleachers.
- 5:30And so that was as loud those three.
- 5:34Yes, yesterday they were into it, electric, all that.
- 5:39No, a wild card game did not get the others.
- 5:42By the way, you need to root for the Yankees if you want to watch
- 5:45that game because it'll be a 1:00 Central time start on
- 5:49Saturday if the Yankees advance. If the Red Sox advance, it's the
- 5:53night cap. It would be eight O 8 Central,
- 5:57so six O 8 Vegas time. What?
- 5:58The Brewers. The Brewers Cubs game on
- 6:02Saturday, If the Red Sox win, first pitch will be eight O 8
- 6:07Central. When did they announce that?
- 6:10I'm looking at this from the ALDSNLDS.
- 6:14This is from Major League Baseball.
- 6:17Did they just put that out? Recently.
- 6:19Yeah, recently within the last hour.
- 6:22OK, because this morning when I was on the air, I checked it and
- 6:25they said that the Brewers are expecting to play at noon.
- 6:29The Phillies game would take precedence at night.
- 6:32Yeah, this is from Bob Nightingale who retweeted, got
- 6:35the schedule somehow and tweeted out there so you'll be able to
- 6:38find him anyways. Well, some work to do.
- 6:41Obviously before that we Trent and I, when we were lining up
- 6:44talked about Dansby Swanson, his plays in the field in that 4th
- 6:47inning cap. There's AI mean this guy's won
- 6:49Gold Gloves before some people forget that he's he did have a
- 6:52couple of more errors maybe this year than some other years and
- 6:56maybe that cloud some. But boy, good God, what an
- 6:58inning he had. He was incredible though, the
- 7:04100 and whatever mile an hour rocket that they hit at him that
- 7:08he made a play on and then the looping in a little pumpback
- 7:13liner that he went out and caught kept the guy third.
- 7:16Those were two of the key plays of the game.
- 7:18Matt Shawn, the 1st inning, 112 miles an hour plus and he caught
- 7:23it to end the inning with a man on 3rd.
- 7:25So yeah, there were a number, I think it was the second inning.
- 7:28There was a number of key plays. PCA was magnificent out in the
- 7:33outfield. So the Cubs did what they had to
- 7:36do defensively. And then say as Suzuki's going
- 7:39for the the franchise record today, he's holding five
- 7:43straight games, tying the late Ryan Sandberg.
- 7:46And we'll see if, say, it can hit #6 today.
- 7:49Well, as we look at today, let's get into the matchup Game 2 and
- 7:54it's not going to be Shota at the top.
- 7:55It's going to be an opener. Kittredge, who pitched
- 7:57yesterday, he will get the top of that.
- 8:00Padres a line up, your take away.
- 8:02We'll just start right there with the decision to go with
- 8:04Kittredge to open it up. Well, I mean, Shota has had an
- 8:08ERA this year in the first inning of 7.20.
- 8:11That's not good. And so if you can limit the
- 8:16amount of times he has to face, whether it's Tatis or Machado or
- 8:22any of those dudes, then I got no issues with what Craig
- 8:27counsels doing. Look, it doesn't mean it's going
- 8:29to work, but you try. Your job as a manager or as a
- 8:34head coach is you have to put your team in the best possible
- 8:40position to win a game. That's it.
- 8:42And then they have to execute in the end.
- 8:45If I'm a back in my basketball coaching days, I can drop the
- 8:49coolest play you've ever seen. If the guy misses the wide open
- 8:54shot, I failed. It's players play, coaches
- 8:59diagram plays, that's it, and they put their team in position
- 9:04to win. It's ultimately it comes down to
- 9:07the players. Yesterday.
- 9:09I know Aaron Boone's getting crushed for taking Max Freed out
- 9:13and I wouldn't have taken Max Freed out either.
- 9:16But if the duty brings in doesn't give up the big hits and
- 9:20they does his job, no one says a word.
- 9:23In the end, the player failed. Yeah, no doubt, Cap.
- 9:27I didn't get past the fact that Kittridge is starting and I blew
- 9:30my mind. I had no idea what the plan was.
- 9:33I thought it was going to be for some reason, go to the bullpen,
- 9:35game almost conceding. And then when, you know, Trent
- 9:38said no, no, there's more to this.
- 9:39Then it made sense and I get it. I'd like to move now as well.
- 9:43How about the bullpen yesterday, Cap?
- 9:45Polencia, the Pomerantz to Kittridge to Keller.
- 9:47What an effort out of the pen. They were magnificent. 4 and 2/3
- 9:53of no run baseball, no hit baseball, no walk baseball.
- 9:58They just made big pitches in big spots.
- 10:00And then when Brad Keller punched out Dander Bogarts to
- 10:04end the game, that pitch was unhittable. 97 on the black of
- 10:09the plate mean right in the corner of the box ball.
- 10:12Game over. Thanks for coming, that was
- 10:14spectacular. That bullpen, the way that they
- 10:18have it set up and the ability, I mean, plenty.
- 10:20It was as good as he's looked, certainly since he came off the
- 10:22IL and he was just at a high level.
- 10:25Is this how it's going to be or do we have the order?
- 10:28Palencia sometime 5th, 6th, 7th, whenever they need them, 8th
- 10:32inning and then then the back end.
- 10:33It was Kittridge yesterday, obviously won't be today.
- 10:36And then in the back end, the way that they filled it, do you
- 10:38do you have a pretty good feel? That's about how it's going to
- 10:40look, though, with the bullpen. I think it goes day by day like
- 10:45they had five left handers in the lineup yesterday for San
- 10:49Diego against a lefty starter, and I'm imagining you're going
- 10:53to have 5 again in the lineup today against a lefty who's
- 10:57doing the majority of the pitching.
- 10:59You still have Caleb Theobar you can use.
- 11:01You still have Drew Pomeran who you can use.
- 11:04Look, you don't worry about pitch counts and you don't worry
- 11:09about managing innings. This is not July 22nd, this is
- 11:15October 1st and you're in the post season and if you win
- 11:18today, you move on to the one series against Milwaukee, which
- 11:23would just be high drama. So hopefully, hopefully they can
- 11:27get it done today. Cap We saw the Cubs trying to
- 11:29keep Red Sox fans on the Yankee Stadium.
- 11:32Will Brewers fans do the same with Was it American Family
- 11:35Insurance Ballpark now Miller Park?
- 11:37Will they try to? Keep Family Field, Yeah.
- 11:39Yeah, How will they go about it, Cap?
- 11:41Will they will? I mean, Cubs fans will get in,
- 11:44but they'll try and limit them. Do you know if that's what's
- 11:46their plan if it is Brewers Cups?
- 11:48They haven't said now during the regular season, sometimes they
- 11:52make it more difficult. And it's funny, I bought tickets
- 11:56because I have a home in Wisconsin on top of my home
- 11:58here. And so I bought them from my
- 12:01Wisconsin zip code and I was able to get them and I went to
- 12:06the game. I wasn't working that day, so I
- 12:09went to one of the games. But they can only limit them to
- 12:13the degree that they can because look, if people want to get in,
- 12:18they're going to find a way to buy tickets.
- 12:21We have a massive fan base. And in the end, they cannot stop
- 12:26you at the gate and go, are you a Cubs fan?
- 12:28No, you can't come in. You get the tickets, you're
- 12:31going to get in. So I would think there'll be a
- 12:33large collection of blue there. Josh Blackwell will be a name
- 12:38that will be remembered for a long time, certainly at this
- 12:41season that they can hang around for a while and make a push in
- 12:44December. Blackwell gets the block and
- 12:47gets I the Bears the victory 2524 over the Raiders.
- 12:51Take us into that moment and all of a sudden we're seeing field
- 12:55goals blocked off the edge after.
- 12:56Felt like that hadn't been a part of the NFL for like the
- 12:58last decade. Yeah, he apparently Scott Daly,
- 13:03the long snapper, dwells Richard Hightower, our special teams
- 13:07coordinator, they both told him that there is a tell that their
- 13:13long snapper, the Raiders, moves the ball right before he's going
- 13:16to snap it and they timed it out.
- 13:18I think Richard Hightower had timed once he moves the ball,
- 13:22how quickly he snaps it. And so Josh Blackwell did a lot
- 13:26of film study and then he timed it and he said whatever the
- 13:30number of seconds, let's say 3 seconds, a sign moved the ball.
- 13:34He's like 1001, one thousand two, 1003 gone.
- 13:38And he got it. It was awesome to see.
- 13:40Yeah, I mean, Sunday Night Football felt like the Packers
- 13:43Cowboys game, maybe the turning point in that game was the
- 13:46blocked point after for a return for a safety.
- 13:49Unbelievable cap. They're they go into their by 4,
- 13:52they go into a two and two. Your your thoughts, what still
- 13:56what still needs to improve in your mind cap for this for this
- 13:59Bears team? Like I don't think they're a
- 14:00Super Bowl team. I think they're going to contend
- 14:03for a playoff berth. But what?
- 14:05What have you seen you liked and what do you've what have you
- 14:07seen that they still need to improve on?
- 14:10Well, they got to figure out their offensive line because
- 14:13much as we maligned the tackles, you had Theo Benedett at left
- 14:19tackle in the second-half and you had Ozzie True Pillow at
- 14:24right tackle because Darnell Rice injured the interiors where
- 14:28you're paying your money. That's just a fact. 14 million
- 14:31to Jonah Jackson at right guard, 14 million to Drew dominant
- 14:35center, 17 million to Joe Tooney.
- 14:38Those guys did not play well against the Raiders.
- 14:40They have to be better. You pay for quality.
- 14:43You got to get quality. I told you, you're going to a
- 14:46super expensive steakhouse and you got, you know, some lousy
- 14:50piece of meat. You'd be like, I felt what I
- 14:52paid for. I was willing to pay for the
- 14:54best. I want to eat the best.
- 14:56So that's what has to be better. And then they've got to get more
- 15:00out of their pass rush. You Geno Smith's not going to be
- 15:03throwing the ball to the to the Bears every week.
- 15:06You're going to have to make sure you get pressure on the
- 15:09quarterback. Ben Johnson been pretty honest
- 15:11about where they are in cold. Sunday's game a mess afterwards.
- 15:15He's hard on this team, he's hard on these guys.
- 15:18He's. Hard on sideline reporters at
- 15:19halftime interview. He is too.
- 15:21He definitely has that component to it.
- 15:24Take us in a little bit, Ben Johnson.
- 15:26He just, he's a different kind of personality than I certainly
- 15:29anticipated. He's kind of a red ass, isn't
- 15:31he? Oh, he is.
- 15:33And I love it. I love it.
- 15:36Look, I did not have a problem with how he handled the halftime
- 15:40interview because I thought that she had made this declarative
- 15:45statement. The way you hear her question,
- 15:48you can't hear, do you? You hear, you have to chase what
- 15:52you're doing. And if I was the coach, I'm in
- 15:57game mode like people, friends of mine who aren't in the
- 16:00business, they're casual sports fans.
- 16:03Why did he have to be such a jerk to her?
- 16:05Couldn't he just have, you know, listen to her statement?
- 16:08I said, you got to remember something here that dudes in a
- 16:11fish ball. He's trying to win a football
- 16:13game. His mind is going 9,000,000
- 16:15miles an hour about how they can come back from a really lousy
- 16:19offensive performance in the first half.
- 16:22It's the last thing he feels like doing is that interview.
- 16:25And you really get nothing out of it.
- 16:28I mean, do you really learn anything?
- 16:30Does he go, yeah, we're going to be trying to bomb on the first
- 16:34play of the second-half? No, Nobody gives you anything.
- 16:38So why they feel like they have to do these.
- 16:41I've had to do those. I've had to be the announcer
- 16:45that's doing the sideline. And I remember a Missouri Valley
- 16:48coach, he was down 30 at the half.
- 16:51It was Greg Lansing, the old coach in Indiana State, and
- 16:55we're doing the game of the week and I got to go and I know him,
- 16:58He's a friend of mine. And here he comes.
- 17:00And I'm like, Greg, what did you tell your team?
- 17:04Because I was taught at ESPN. It's what, how and why?
- 17:09Because if you ask this open-ended, you know, yes, no
- 17:13question, you're not going to get an answer.
- 17:16Your team has to be better on the offensive line.
- 17:19Yep, we do. How about why did your offensive
- 17:23line struggle the block in the run game?
- 17:25How will you repair your lack of blocking in the first half?
- 17:29What do you have to do differently to control Max
- 17:33Crosby? She didn't do any of that, so
- 17:35I'd be critical of her performance.
- 17:38And I understand people being disappointed that Ben showed
- 17:42his, what was the word trait, you Red Hat?
- 17:45Yeah, it's red because his mind's 1,000,000 miles an hour.
- 17:49Like, in 50 seconds, we're kicking the second-half off.
- 17:52I'm trying to win a football game.
- 17:54So both of them fell on their sword.
- 17:57Both said it could have been handled better.
- 17:59We move. On yeah, absolutely.
- 18:01Well, last year I tried last week, rather I tried to steer
- 18:03your steer you or some of your staff to reraw and Mandalay Bay
- 18:07going to do the same this week. I'm sure you've been there.
- 18:09If you stayed, the wind before downstairs to SW Steakhouse
- 18:12doesn't get much better than that cap you've been.
- 18:14So I was at SW last Friday, I took Jonathan for dinner and I'm
- 18:19at SW tomorrow. Nice.
- 18:21Pretty good, isn't it? Oh my God, that's my favorite
- 18:25restaurant in Vegas. Yeah, it's certainly on the
- 18:27list. It's certainly on the list.
- 18:28No doubt about it, Kappa. Enjoy Vegas my.
- 18:30Go ahead, my wife's birthday, we're going to sit by the
- 18:33waterfall. Like the waterfall?
- 18:35Yeah, Oh, you romantic you. And then take her to the Eagles.
- 18:38You're going to have a blast. Good stuff, Kappa.
- 18:40We'll talk to you in a week. Thank you, pal.
- 18:41All. Right, have a great.
- 18:43One good to talk to you, David Kaplan, as we check in on

- 19:38Miller and Condon on Des Moines Sports station 106.3 KX&O.
- 19:51I'm Miller Condon 1:30 I was Sports radio network trends,
- 19:54plays of the day still to come. So game in Cleveland.
- 19:59Game 2 of this Wild Card series. Detroit and Cleveland, It's one
- 20:02apiece bottom of four. Looked like it was going to be
- 20:06two. One so help me out with this
- 20:07because I don't have sound and I saw they went to replay.
- 20:11So bases loaded. Yep, 2 outs 2 outs got you.
- 20:15Javi Baez at the plate hits one ground ball back up the middle.
- 20:18Base Knock yes. Run scores from 3rd.
- 20:21One apiece. And the runner from second also
- 20:24looking to score the throw though goes to 3rd, the runner
- 20:27from first base. Not the home, they were going to
- 20:29come down 3rd. Yep, cut him down at third.
- 20:32Yep, called safe. He was actually out.
- 20:34He went to the replay booth and they they overturned the call.
- 20:37And they got it right. He was out there.
- 20:39So not only do you get the third out and get out of the inning
- 20:41the board, that runner from second that was trying to score.
- 20:44Was he not hustling? I didn't think so.
- 20:47Didn't we just see this this past weekend in a game?
- 20:50It's it's. Unbelievable.
- 20:52So 2 awful things. You're not hustling all the way
- 20:54home. No, it's not Game 161.
- 20:57It's the second game of a Wild. Card, yes, on top of it. 3rd out
- 21:02at 3rd. I mean, that's one of the first
- 21:03baseball adages that you will learn.
- 21:04Ever make the third or third out of third base?
- 21:07And you have two blunders there. How many times does that come
- 21:12back to bite A-Team? Instead of 21 runners at the
- 21:15corners and two outs, it's one, one out of the inning.
- 21:19Guardians to the play. And it's remains 1 apiece, 2
- 21:21out, bottom of four. Let's talk some cyclones, shall
- 21:25we? Nick Meyerowitz joins us locked
- 21:27on cyclone network. Hello, Nick Trenton, Ken, thanks
- 21:30for coming on. How are you?
- 21:31How are you guys doing? Doing OK I.
- 21:33Guess I want to start with you, you know, secondary wise, you
- 21:36know, Trent made a good point because I'm not, I'm not saying
- 21:39that as a gloom and doom I but it's not good news when you
- 21:42learn first of when you lose both of your starting
- 21:46cornerbacks. But Trent pointed out that, you
- 21:47know, I would say he's kind of seen this last year, right?
- 21:49All their linebackers, one after another, one gets hurt, then
- 21:53another gets hurt and soon they're down to their 6th and
- 21:557th guy, guys that never expected to see the field at
- 21:58all. So Campbell is clearly building
- 22:01depth, but no John Tez Williams, no Jeremiah Cooper.
- 22:06What's Iowa State up against as they try to go forward without
- 22:09their two starting corners? Yeah, I mean the.
- 22:13The one thing I want to I'm I'm curious why Matt Campbell is
- 22:16playing starters up practically 33 minutes or three minutes.
- 22:20Left in the game. Like I want to know the decision
- 22:23making behind that, but I guess I don't get to ask those
- 22:26questions. So we're sitting in the same
- 22:27boat there. But I do think there is enough
- 22:29depth there. Matt Campbell talked about all
- 22:31offseason where he thought depth was in secondary, came up over
- 22:35and over. Trey Bell has been a real bright
- 22:37spot. Benny and Goye, David Coffey,
- 22:40Quentin Taylor, like we have guys in the secondary.
- 22:42It's just going to be can they step up as we step through the
- 22:46season? Like there is no return for
- 22:49Cooper or Janta. So you just got to get the job
- 22:52done now and maybe that helps. Things too kind of that week
- 22:55after week what's going to happen am I going to lose my job
- 22:57when he comes back no you you guys are going to be the guys
- 23:00sink or swim Yep and you're. Going to get the.
- 23:02Opportunity, you mentioned coffee.
- 23:04Do you know what the injury was that he was dealing with?
- 23:06I know Campbell mentioned earlier in the week that he is
- 23:09back at practice now and backup practice is one thing, being
- 23:13game ready is another. What can you fill us in there?
- 23:16Because, you know, we've kind of gone into this field, like
- 23:18obviously Trey Bell's going to get one spot.
- 23:20Likely it's going to be Taylor and Nagoye fighting for that
- 23:22other spot. But what can you tell us about
- 23:24coffee? I actually don't know.
- 23:26Too much about what happened with coffee.
- 23:28I It's good news that he's back and I trust Campbell with the
- 23:32fact that he's healthy. But at the same time,
- 23:35everybody's week to week if they're not indefinitely out.
- 23:37So I am not apprehensive, but I want to see it on the field, if
- 23:41that makes sense. I want to see.
- 23:43Nagoya on the field, is he ready to step into those shoes from
- 23:46offense to defense, they've kind of, you know, taking it easy on
- 23:50him, kind of easing him into that spot.
- 23:51Is he ready to go, do you think, Nick?
- 23:54I do actually. And obviously we've seen this in
- 23:56the past with guys like DP, but Matt Campbell talked this
- 24:00offseason about he played DB in high school.
- 24:03And obviously the hands are there.
- 24:05And one of the real strengths of transitioning from offense to
- 24:07defense is that you know how offenses work, you know what
- 24:10they're trying to target in certain defensive coverages and
- 24:13stuff. And that mental side could be a
- 24:15real leg up for being goy. And I think that's really the
- 24:20kind of key for this whole defense is it's veteran LED.
- 24:22They understand the game of football, not just out there
- 24:25kind of a bunch of athletes running fast, like they know
- 24:29what's going on on the field. And that I think is an
- 24:31advantage. And we'll see that in Benny and
- 24:33Goye. I want to jump.
- 24:34Over to a guy that we talked about a ton during the summer
- 24:37time and then into the season. Where is Chase Soel?
- 24:41Where where after this guy, he was going to be the next big
- 24:44wide receiver that's going to come in and hit the ground
- 24:46running and there's going to be no step back.
- 24:48There was we found out he was injured.
- 24:49He was banged up during August camp, didn't get a whole lot of
- 24:52practice time. Is this what the anticipation
- 24:54should be? Not that he's going to go for
- 24:56150 plus yards every single game, but that they do have that
- 25:00traditional bonafide #1 receiver.
- 25:03Do you see so well in that in that role now going forward I.
- 25:07Do in some. Respects, but I also think
- 25:09they'll still continue with that kind of diversified attack.
- 25:11Obviously with the tight ends and Brett Eskelson and what he's
- 25:14been. I'd like to see Dom Overby step
- 25:16up a little bit more. We talked on Locked On Cyclones
- 25:19this week about where is Rocco in the Heisman conversation.
- 25:23I think after the Cincinnati game, there's a real shot he's
- 25:26at the top. Of the Big 12 as.
- 25:28Far as that goes, I think Cincinnati secondary is kind of
- 25:30weak, or at least their weakest position, so look out for a
- 25:34chase. So well, 250 yard game, just
- 25:37some thing ridiculous it seems I talked with Jeff Carr.
- 25:39Seems like they can kind of slow you down to 10 to 15 yard range.
- 25:43But if you pop off the top, you're going to be just fine.
- 25:45So I wonder if Iowa State will try to stretch the field that
- 25:48way and what we saw last week against Arizona Chase so well is
- 25:52that guy I kind? Of looked at.
- 25:54His first few games is as if it was Joe Bro with the Bengals
- 25:57right when he missed his training camp.
- 25:59It takes weeks one through 3 to really get up to speed.
- 26:03Now Chase so well is up to speed for the Cyclones and I think we
- 26:06can see a lot more of him moving forward well if you're the
- 26:09quarterback. On the team that's six and O,
- 26:11you're going to get some love from the Heisman voters or or
- 26:14betters, if nothing else. Not sure where he'll fit, but
- 26:17coming out of the Big 12, he's got to be toward the top of that
- 26:20list. Canton picnics, if indeed they
- 26:23do get the six and O. So what worries you about this
- 26:25Cincinnati team? I'm not sure if you had a chance
- 26:27to watch the Cincinnati Kansas game.
- 26:30Kansas and Daniels seem to do some damage through the air.
- 26:34So maybe so well does have one of those games.
- 26:36What worries you about the Cincinnati squad?
- 26:39I think the. Biggest thing?
- 26:40For me is I just? Struggle to feel, really.
- 26:43Confident when Iowa State's facing a semi mobile quarterback
- 26:46and I think on some level we were really looking at a similar
- 26:50guy as Rocco, right? Like it's not necessarily like
- 26:53source, we can run all over you. That's not their game plan.
- 26:56It's somewhere in there, but it's not their bread and butter.
- 27:00But I worry about his ability to stretch plays, get outside the
- 27:03pocket. I want to see what we saw last
- 27:06week, a couple spots highs, linebackers flowing out to the
- 27:09nine tech like I want to see the linebackers really step up in
- 27:12this one. Obviously with the secondary
- 27:14banged up as well. If that happens, I feel good
- 27:17about this. But you are on the road.
- 27:19You're in Nifford Stadium, which I know a lot of people think is
- 27:21like, oh, it's Cincinnati. It's no big deal.
- 27:23But I think it's actually going to be a tough environment to
- 27:26play in. It's it's it's really the same
- 27:29as all the other games for Iowa State so far this season.
- 27:31Get up, get the first punch in and roll with it from there.
- 27:34You're if you can shut them down early.
- 27:36I think Iowa State's the strongest, so we got our.
- 27:39First extended look at Chase Smith and not kicking extra
- 27:42points in South Dakota when he was called in, but no in in a
- 27:45real environment here against Arizona, 1 field goal knocked it
- 27:49in from 34 yards away. I don't think this is going to
- 27:52be a guy we we don't have to worry about Braden Aubrey
- 27:54territory for him. But what have you seen out of
- 27:56the freshman? What you see from him both
- 27:58kicking and also, you know, those kickoffs and how this is
- 28:01going to look and change Obviously with Canardy out,
- 28:04looks like for another couple weeks of minimum.
- 28:07I'll try. I'm actually kind of surprised
- 28:08you're even willing to say Karate's name.
- 28:10Yeah, yeah. But.
- 28:13No, I, I. Think we'll see some aggression
- 28:15kind of around that 4045 yard line just to get inside of that
- 28:1935 actual kick range for for chase.
- 28:24I think that's what they're going to be gunning for.
- 28:26So I think that's a positive for Iowa State.
- 28:28It's not going to be when Mauser spoke on the whole kicking
- 28:32situation, he said we're once we cross the 50, we're we kind of
- 28:35know we're in field goal range. And to me it sounded like he was
- 28:39OK with settling like for three, let's line up the ball where can
- 28:43already wants to kick it from. We walk away with points.
- 28:46That's the win. I want this team to be a little
- 28:48more aggressive. I think they're capable on
- 28:50offensive doing that. And so I wonder if this will
- 28:53result in a more explosive but at least more aggressive offense
- 28:58and in the middle of the field and that will result in more
- 29:00points. But I feel good about Chase
- 29:02kicking it, especially after getting one in game.
- 29:04You know, obviously suiting up is different than doing it in
- 29:07practice under the lights. It's going to be a big deal.
- 29:09So confidence is there, but I'd like to see the offense more
- 29:11aggressive, too. Yeah, I love the fact that he
- 29:13was. Able to get out there and
- 29:14actually kick a field goal and he was meaningless for the most
- 29:18part. I mean, no, no pressure at that
- 29:20time of the football game. I like the fact that Campbell
- 29:22didn't send him out there right after the first touchdown.
- 29:24They went for two, so he had a little bit of wiggle room if,
- 29:27you know, if he wasn't ready. We'll see where it goes.
- 29:29Good stuff. Is Nippert Stadium the oldest
- 29:32stadium in the conference? Has to be right?
- 29:36That's over 100 years old. I don't have the stats.
- 29:39Specifically on on how long it's been around, but I do know it's
- 29:43one of the most recent stadiums to have someone sleep over in
- 29:46it. Just this last week GFED slept
- 29:48there and I feel like that's worth bringing up.
- 29:50It's pretty neat. Did not know.
- 29:52That Nick good stuff. Locked on cyclones for for Nick
- 29:56locked on cyclones daily podcast, right?
- 29:59It's every day Monday. Through Friday, good stuff you
- 30:01can find. It on the part of the locked on
- 30:03network. Nick, thanks for jumping on
- 30:04appreciate it. Thanks for having me.
- 30:06Guys, Yeah. Good to talk to Nick Berevitz.
- 30:08On Iowa State, locked on cyclones.
- 30:10That thing's old, Trent. It is.
- 30:12Oldest Stadium. I Nippert Stadium what year 19
- 30:19what early 19 it was. Attendance record surface open
- 30:25in 19/15/19. 15 I would think so.
- 30:29Has to be a lot of. Renovations.
- 30:31Throughout the years, yeah. Because it.
- 30:33Recently expanded because I think this it uses it's like
- 30:3731,000 or something rings a bell for a long long time up to 40
- 30:41now they're. Up to 40, maybe some of that.
- 30:43Kelsey Money helped out with the with the renovations of that
- 30:47stadium. That's a cool building.
- 30:50Nippert Stadium, ESPN two 11:00 Saturday morning.
- 30:54Or if you're driving around and you're in central Iowa on the
- 30:58flagship for the Cyclone Radio network, 100.3, the bus point
- 31:03spread their cats favored 1 1/2. Yes, two, one and a half one.
- 31:08Somewhere in that vicinity. I'm looking right?
- 31:11Now at Wager Talk, there has been, I would guess, a couple of
- 31:15substantial bets on on Cincinnati really. 95.
- 31:20Percent of the money listed at Wager Talk is on Cincinnati in
- 31:25this game, while the tickets basically split 51% in
- 31:28Cincinnati. So that normally that'll tell
- 31:31you there are big, big bets and that's not everyday Joes.
- 31:37That is a betting syndicate. That is something along those
- 31:40lines, a service play that was sent out that would tell you
- 31:43that's why you see so much and that decided advantage on the
- 31:46Cincinnati side. It's one and. 1/2 everywhere.
- 31:50There is one out there. Chris Andrews at the South
- 31:52points down to 1, but everybody else is at 1 1/2.
- 31:56Do you like, is there a college game you like more than the
- 31:58others this week? Maybe not even from a betting
- 32:00perspective, just viewership wise, yeah.
- 32:02If you want to watch one. Game other than the 1 you know,
- 32:04Iowa State Cincinnati for work related purposes Miami FL state
- 32:09move your needle. It absolutely does.
- 32:10Sandy, Alabama. That one is just.
- 32:13Intriguing because of the storylines.
- 32:14I mean, last year, Yeah. What happened?
- 32:17Pavia, of course. It's just worth the price of
- 32:19admission go really well or really poorly because that's
- 32:22what you get out of Diego Pavia, the Florida State Miami game.
- 32:26Now this is a product of my age, us in the 80s and early 90s.
- 32:31Yeah, everybody. Yes, from kids in Osage all the
- 32:35way through. He had one of the two.
- 32:36Yeah. And even Florida really wasn't
- 32:38part of that makes, at least for us, you're either fan of the you
- 32:41or Florida State. I was a Florida State guy.
- 32:43I had the Florida State jacket. I love Charlie Ward.
- 32:46I thought that Casey Walton was going to be a stud in the league
- 32:48like Bowden and his Seminoles. Year after, year after.
- 32:51Year top five every single season.
- 32:53So I was a Florida State guy growing up.
- 32:55There's just something special about that rivalry for me.
- 32:58But I'm sure it's also a product of my age, right?
- 33:00That's it was just such an important game from like 8797.
- 33:05It was who, every single year, if seemingly determined who was
- 33:08going to be in the national championship.
- 33:10Right does. Michigan State, Nebraska in the
- 33:13middle of the afternoon interest you at all?
- 33:15No, that's where I'll be because that's the final two games for
- 33:18the Of course you're a Oscar fan.
- 33:19Well, I want to see Michigan State.
- 33:21Because I'm not sure when I watch Michigan State again, I
- 33:23watch where they play. Iowa, I got enough of Michigan
- 33:26State against USC. No, I'll watch it.
- 33:28I'll have it on because what is what else?
- 33:30Is in the middle of the afternoon.
- 33:32Vanity, Alabama. That's middle of the afternoon
- 33:35Texas, Florida, Middle of the afternoon.
- 33:37Penn State. You see, boy, how far has CBS
- 33:39fallen and when CBS was appointment TV at 2:30 in the
- 33:42afternoon. Good God.
- 33:45Well, take a time to pony up, though.
- 33:47When? They had a great deal they did.
- 33:49The SEC said. You know.
- 33:50What? I think we should get a little
- 33:51bit more. No, we got a deal, you know.
- 33:54Whoops. We will come back Trent's plays
- 33:58of the day. What are we doing baseball wise?
- 33:59It's still one a piece. We seem to be a break or my TV
- 34:02is frozen. I just came back from break.
- 34:04Is it still one a piece? It is one a piece as we go to
- 34:07the bottom of five. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 34:11with you. We're glad you're with us on Des
- 34:13Moines sports station one O 6.3 and the Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:17Network. But first, we owe you a keyword.
- 34:21Yes, let's get to it before. Let's get somebody $1000.
- 34:24Hell yeah, they and. You know what, they can deposit
- 34:27it in their bank account. If they win, the keyword is
- 34:29deposit. Deposit at kxno.com.
- 34:32Head there now you'll see the pop up box type deposit.
- 34:35Somebody's going to win $1000 deposit kxno.com.
- 34:39Miller and Condon back with more coming right back.
- 34:41Miller and Condon welcome back. Final segment here.
- 34:45Little CCR to bring us back into it.
- 34:48Good stuff. Boy, these guys were good.
- 34:50I like Fogerty I. Do too still.
- 34:51Doing it and his sons, I think our son, but it just I think
- 34:56they just released a new album. Not even the new stuff, but boy,
- 34:58that old stuff was unbelievable. We got a hell of a baseball game
- 35:02in Cleveland, Detroit and Cleveland won a piece and you
- 35:05will probably follow these things.
- 35:07I know, although you don't bet totals too much in baseball, but
- 35:10how was significant? I know when the NBA playoffs get
- 35:12here I mean the totals just go crashing down because they play
- 35:15defense in the playoffs opposed to the 82 game regular season.
- 35:20How much did the number drop in in MLB game totals?
- 35:23Do you have any idea? Well, at the run I see Padres.
- 35:27Cubs is 6 1/2 today and normally there's 7.
- 35:29And a half eight sitting there, somewhere in there. 7 1/2 for
- 35:32red. Sox Yankees Tonight 8 1/2 For
- 35:34Dodgers Red. So yeah, those are definitely
- 35:37doubted if you would have taken just blindly taken the unders
- 35:39yesterday, you had a three in one day.
- 35:40Yeah, the late game was the. One you lost right 5 homers out
- 35:43of the Dodgers. They flipped that switch.
- 35:45Ken tried to tell you. I hope you're right.
- 35:47So. Real quick.
- 35:48Well, I just don't. I don't mean to say that I don't
- 35:50want to talk about this. Jack Dreyer.
- 35:52You, you. You called his games.
- 35:54Yes, I remember when I showed up.
- 35:56To a chance to game, yeah. And Barta and Stephis goes, and
- 35:59we got this freshman. He's pretty good.
- 36:01This is his freshman. Show he's in 9th grade, He's in
- 36:039th grade. And he's throwing, you know,
- 36:05upper 80s at the time. He's a lefty.
- 36:06I'm like, oh, he's good. Yeah.
- 36:08But never. How big was he then?
- 36:10He was gangly. He's all arms and legs at that
- 36:14point. He wasn't super tall by any
- 36:15means that he's maybe 6-1. But yeah, you could all right.
- 36:19But you don't know I, I certainly, I'm not a scout sure
- 36:22to turn into this to be a backbone.
- 36:25Yes, of that bullpen. What a big inning last night.
- 36:29What a big inning. Got that ball four that got
- 36:31swung at to get out of the inning.
- 36:33Just huge. He's a lefty boy.
- 36:35Lefties were the story of the day yesterday.
- 36:37No doubt about it. Don't have any?
- 36:39Props for today I do have that was your only your loss
- 36:42yesterday of memories. By the way, great handicap on
- 36:45the WNBA, laying the 9 all day long.
- 36:48You know, I really had him there.
- 36:50Seriously, I watched most of the second-half and every single
- 36:54time it looked like the Aces were going to pull away.
- 36:58The Fever had a response and then another injury hits and it
- 37:02just, I don't know how they did it.
- 37:04Credit to Stephanie White and that team, even in that
- 37:06position. I was absolutely incredibly
- 37:09impressed doing that, what she did.
- 37:11But we got a lucky one on that one.
- 37:14It'll come. It'll you know.
- 37:15What? It'll come around again, Jeff,
- 37:16Right. You'll you'll lose a
- 37:17heartbreaker somehow. I think you lost that game
- 37:20anyways, what are you playing today?
- 37:21Just playing the Cubs and the. Yankees.
- 37:22That's it, that's it. Had Bybee.
- 37:25So we hit the strikeout over, but I also had him over 14 1/2
- 37:29outs. Oh, nice.
- 37:30And. It didn't get the outs though.
- 37:32Because he got pulled before he got passed that number.
- 37:35Yeah, we were one out away from hitting the number for Bobby. 14
