- 1:58Speaker 1: The Buffalo Bills have hired Jim Leonard as their defensive
- 2:04Speaker 1: coordinator currently the You know, it's funny, I always like
- 2:10Speaker 1: he sticks out so much to me, as you know,
- 2:12Speaker 1: the Wisconsin defensive coordinator and what he did there that
- 2:15Speaker 1: I always forget, like exactly what he was doing at
- 2:16Speaker 1: Denver these past years. But he was the in twenty
- 2:19Speaker 1: twenty five, the assistant head coach and defensive pass game
- 2:21Speaker 1: coordinator for the Broncos in twenty twenty five twenty twenty four,
- 2:25Speaker 1: he was the DB's coach and pass game coordinator there.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Previous year twenty twenty three, really hot name in coaching circles,
- 2:32Speaker 1: potentially jumping from college to the NFL. He ended up
- 2:36Speaker 1: kind of taking some time off to a degree, was
- 2:38Speaker 1: a senior football analyst for Illinois. But his big stead
- 2:42Speaker 1: where he really started to build a rep as a
- 2:43Speaker 1: defensive mind schematically, structurally, philosophically, was done at Wisconsin. He
- 2:49Speaker 1: was there from twenty sixteen through twenty twenty two. He
- 2:52Speaker 1: was their DB's coach in twenty sixteen. He was their
- 2:54Speaker 1: defensive coordinator along with being the DB's coach from twenty
- 2:57Speaker 1: seventeen to twenty twenty two, and then he was their
- 3:00Speaker 1: firm head coach in twenty twenty two. I did a
- 3:04Speaker 1: large deep dive into Jim Leonard this past Tuesday in
- 3:08Speaker 1: a disguised coverage in the back half of the episode.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So if some of you watch that, tune into that,
- 3:14Speaker 1: you'll hear some pieces that I talked about in that episode.
- 3:18Speaker 1: But now that it's official, so let's go live, let's react,
- 3:21Speaker 1: Let's get to people's thoughts, questions, comments, concerns, engagement, all
- 3:24Speaker 1: that stuff. As always, super chats get priority one because
- 3:27Speaker 1: I respect the monetary donation. Two the color distracts me
- 3:30Speaker 1: from my notes and gets me focused on something.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Op.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I gotta stop because we've got a super chat already.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Oh one, thank you for being here. Two, thank you
- 3:40Speaker 1: for the super chat. In the comment is just straight.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Let's go with an exclamation point. New stadium, new defensive identity.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I love that. I love that. I love that one
- 3:49Speaker 1: one thousand percent woin and be talking about that defensive identity,
- 3:52Speaker 1: what it means, for what it means structurally and schematically
- 3:54Speaker 1: for the bills what you can expect to see. But
- 3:57Speaker 1: also tying into that that quote unquote new defensive identity,
- 4:00Speaker 1: what does it mean for the current personnel? What does
- 4:03Speaker 1: it mean, you know, defensively, what does it mean for
- 4:05Speaker 1: future personnel? And stuff like that, because there's not exactly
- 4:09Speaker 1: as we talked a little bit about in Tuesday show,
- 4:12Speaker 1: it's not exactly a complete seamless fit or transition from
- 4:15Speaker 1: Sean McDermott's defense to Jim Leonard's defense. Right, there are
- 4:20Speaker 1: some kind of oval shaped pegs that are going to
- 4:26Speaker 1: go into some round holes. There's some square pegs that
- 4:28Speaker 1: have to go into a round hole. What do you
- 4:29Speaker 1: do all that kind of stuff? I see this answer
- 4:32Speaker 1: from Coke, which I love, who says the tree never
- 4:33Speaker 1: comes down. It's a general holiday tree, not a Christmas tree.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I'm guessing somebody earlier in the episode said why is there? Oh? Yeah,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Rick said, bro, it's almost February. You can take the
- 4:42Speaker 1: Christmas tree down. Christmas tree stay up all year round,
- 4:44Speaker 1: especially the little one. I am taking the big one
- 4:47Speaker 1: down once January ends. I wasn't expecting to do another
- 4:51Speaker 1: show this week after the ones. During the week. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: I was supposed to take it down over the weekend,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but I wasn't expecting to do a show. So next
- 4:57Speaker 1: week this tre will go down and then this tree
- 4:59Speaker 1: will get move over there and it'll be decorated all
- 5:02Speaker 1: in red for a Valentine's Day tree. But Cope, I
- 5:05Speaker 1: appreciate you. You understand the assignment. You recognize where we are.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills. Yeah. Today earlier, roughly maybe an hour or
- 5:12Speaker 1: so ago, announced the hiring of Jim Leonard. It's funny
- 5:16Speaker 1: now because I want to pull up one of my
- 5:20Speaker 1: tweets from Joe Brady's presser. I thought that that was
- 5:23Speaker 1: also you know too. I wanted to go live kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of tie this into some of the things we heard
- 5:26Speaker 1: in the presser from Joe Brady the other day, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: forgive me as I scroll, I want to grab exactly
- 5:34Speaker 1: what he said. Um um ah, that's right. Okay. So early,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Brandon Bean, I should say, leads off and Joe Brady
- 5:42Speaker 1: said some things defensively as well. But Brandon Bean gets
- 5:45Speaker 1: up at the podium does the kind of i don't know,
- 5:48Speaker 1: like minute and a half two minute intro, like to
- 5:50Speaker 1: set up Joe Brady coming to the podium, and in
- 5:52Speaker 1: that he spoke you know, it wasn't just like, hey,
- 5:56Speaker 1: we're excited to have Joe, Hey, let me introduce the
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know, the new head coach of the team. Were ecstatic,
- 6:01Speaker 1: blah blah blah. There was some of that, right, But
- 6:03Speaker 1: he specifically spoke on what Joe Brady wants in his defense,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and he spoke about that in the opening. He talked
- 6:09Speaker 1: about like some things they learned through this process about Joe,
- 6:13Speaker 1: about themselves, all these things, But he spoke about that specifically,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and I wanted to read that quote he said, quote,
- 6:18Speaker 1: so this is Brandon Bean being said quote. But what
- 6:21Speaker 1: I and but what I and our team learned through
- 6:26Speaker 1: this process was Joe's vision for how he would run
- 6:29Speaker 1: an entire football team, and specifically his thoughts on how
- 6:33Speaker 1: our defense would play under Joe if he was given
- 6:36Speaker 1: this job. He wants a defense that attacks opposing qbs
- 6:40Speaker 1: and play callers pre snap and post snap. A defense
- 6:43Speaker 1: that dictates to the offense. Now end quote. Then now
- 6:48Speaker 1: was a part of the quote I'm saying. Now you
- 6:50Speaker 1: might hear that and say, of course, that's what all
- 6:51Speaker 1: defenses should do, Like why is this notable? What's the
- 6:53Speaker 1: big deal. It's notable for a couple of reasons. One
- 6:56Speaker 1: Sean mcdermot's defense. For the most part, I think they
- 7:00Speaker 1: were a bit more aggressive than they get credit for.
- 7:02Speaker 1: But they were not necessarily or regularly or consistently a
- 7:06Speaker 1: play on the front foot type of defense. They were not, Hey,
- 7:10Speaker 1: it's going to be blitzing and pressing and we're attacking.
- 7:12Speaker 1: We're doing all these things. You know, I think a
- 7:14Speaker 1: lot of fans use the soft zone moniker over and
- 7:17Speaker 1: over again. I think that kind of gets misconstrued. But
- 7:19Speaker 1: that's a conversation for another time in terms of what
- 7:21Speaker 1: a soft zone means or how it was played or
- 7:23Speaker 1: relevant to the Bills. But you know, the Bills were
- 7:27Speaker 1: more reactive as a defense than they were front foot
- 7:31Speaker 1: and dictating as a defense. Right. And so you hear
- 7:35Speaker 1: that quote from Brady, and I think that should be
- 7:36Speaker 1: kind of music to fans ears. But it also ties
- 7:39Speaker 1: in very well with a quote from Jim Leonard. This
- 7:42Speaker 1: is one of my favorite quotes of his from a
- 7:44Speaker 1: coaching clinic of his several several years ago when he
- 7:46Speaker 1: was still at Wisconsin. So you heard that right from
- 7:49Speaker 1: what you know being said about Brady's vision for the defense.
- 7:52Speaker 1: He wants a defense that attacks opposing qbs and play
- 7:55Speaker 1: callers pre snap and post snap, a defense that dictates
- 7:58Speaker 1: to the offense. You hear this quote that I'm about
- 8:02Speaker 1: to read from Jim Leonard from several years ago, where
- 8:04Speaker 1: Jim Leonard says, quote, I never want to be a counterpuncher.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I always want us to have things in our game
- 8:10Speaker 1: plan that we can dictate the flow to an offense.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You need these offenses to have to go over to
- 8:16Speaker 1: the sideline and find an answer. And the more flexibility
- 8:19Speaker 1: you have within your scheme and the more ways you
- 8:21Speaker 1: have to be that, you know, throwing that jab or
- 8:24Speaker 1: throwing some of those uppercuts on them, then they have
- 8:26Speaker 1: to go make adjustments and not just attack, which is
- 8:30Speaker 1: what they all want to do. And I thought, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: that's Leonards. That's a big part of Leonard's identity and
- 8:35Speaker 1: philosophy what you're going to get into as we go
- 8:36Speaker 1: forward in this episode. But I heard that little bread
- 8:38Speaker 1: crumb at the presser, and you know, maybe it was
- 8:40Speaker 1: just wishful thinking on my part because I wanted Jim
- 8:43Speaker 1: Leonard as the Bills defensive coordinator for several several years
- 8:46Speaker 1: I've been tweeting about it, I think since twenty twenty
- 8:47Speaker 1: three or twenty twenty two something like that. It just
- 8:51Speaker 1: aligns so well Leonard's vision and philosophy and scheme instructure
- 8:57Speaker 1: and how he runs the defenses out of the ball.
- 8:59Speaker 1: It aligns so well with that quote from being on
- 9:02Speaker 1: what Brady said he wanted in the defense. But it
- 9:03Speaker 1: also just aligns and applies very very well to how
- 9:08Speaker 1: you need to play defense in today's modern NFL in
- 9:10Speaker 1: terms of the flexibility or the multiplicity, being able to
- 9:13Speaker 1: adjust dictating to an offense right changing pre to post
- 9:17Speaker 1: snap pictures while still being sound, and your fundamentals and
- 9:19Speaker 1: your calls and your identity. There's so much that is
- 9:23Speaker 1: required of a defense today because the rules really do
- 9:26Speaker 1: skew heavily towards the offense, and offenses, like that Jim
- 9:30Speaker 1: Lennard quote mentioned, they like to attack, they want to
- 9:33Speaker 1: play on the front foot, but you need to make
- 9:35Speaker 1: them go back to the tablet or the iPad or
- 9:37Speaker 1: wherever you know you have on the sideline and be
- 9:39Speaker 1: looking at stuff and trying to figure out, oh, what
- 9:41Speaker 1: was that coverage rotation? I didn't see post snap? How
- 9:44Speaker 1: did that free runner come through, and there's more things
- 9:47Speaker 1: than the I'm just giving a couple like low hanging
- 9:49Speaker 1: fruit examples. You need offenses in game to have to
- 9:53Speaker 1: react to be like, okay, we got punched in the face. Now,
- 9:55Speaker 1: how do we not get punched in the face again? Right?
- 9:57Speaker 1: You need more of that. The Bills defense was more
- 9:59Speaker 1: okay under Sean mcnermoy. The Bills defense was more okay,
- 10:02Speaker 1: let's go out, let's kind of play what we're going
- 10:04Speaker 1: to play. We'll see what the offense does, and then
- 10:07Speaker 1: what kind of tailor things as we go forward. That's
- 10:09Speaker 1: really kind of been That was the m last year.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Even a bit this year, I thought they you know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: did well even within that. Especially this year. I've talked
- 10:18Speaker 1: so much about the changes in blitz rate, and you'll
- 10:21Speaker 1: rub both run blitz and pass blitz rates from the
- 10:24Speaker 1: first half versus the second half of games for the
- 10:26Speaker 1: Buffalo Bills, especially when Sean McDermott got his teeth more
- 10:29Speaker 1: into the defense, taken a little more over from Bobby Babbage,
- 10:32Speaker 1: we saw good adjustments, good game plans. I know the
- 10:34Speaker 1: Denver game, you know what happened towards the end of
- 10:37Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, But think about what it was through
- 10:39Speaker 1: the heavy majority of the third and fourth quarter. The
- 10:41Speaker 1: Bills defense the first half was kind of like uh,
- 10:43Speaker 1: in the second half, they were all over Denver, smothering them,
- 10:46Speaker 1: suffocating a very little room to breathe. We saw that
- 10:49Speaker 1: a lot in the second half of games to the
- 10:50Speaker 1: Bills defense, where they would get into halftime and be like, Okay,
- 10:52Speaker 1: this is what's happening, let's pivot. But at times it
- 10:55Speaker 1: would be like, well, they're pivoting, but they've already given
- 10:57Speaker 1: up twenty one points, or you've given up twenty you know,
- 10:59Speaker 1: twenty plus in general, or teams have three hundred yards
- 11:02Speaker 1: on you already and they're moving the ball up and
- 11:04Speaker 1: down the field and you look gash and it's like, okay,
- 11:06Speaker 1: can you still pivot? Is there enough time? You know?
- 11:09Speaker 1: It would be nicer to kind of have that mentality
- 11:12Speaker 1: or that matchup mindset early in the game to not
- 11:15Speaker 1: get down or not give give the team twenty plus
- 11:17Speaker 1: points and be able to play into things a little
- 11:18Speaker 1: bit more. Jim Leonard is matchup based, Let's go into
- 11:23Speaker 1: the game, build things for that opponent week to week,
- 11:26Speaker 1: while still being within the identity and scheme of the defense, right,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but tailoring it more to being matchup specific to a
- 11:33Speaker 1: specific opponent. Which one I'd like overall and I prefer,
- 11:37Speaker 1: but two that works much better in the playoffs. You
- 11:39Speaker 1: think about these defensive coordinators that have really made their
- 11:42Speaker 1: name for the past several years in the NFL. Again
- 11:44Speaker 1: low hanging fruit examples, Steve Spagnolo, lu Anarroumo, right, known
- 11:47Speaker 1: for these big game matchup defenses. These defense that get
- 11:51Speaker 1: into the playoffs and they have an offense's entire catalog
- 11:54Speaker 1: from the season on tape, and they know, Okay, this
- 11:57Speaker 1: is how you like to punch, this is what you do. Okay, you're,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, a right handed haymaker type dude. We're going
- 12:02Speaker 1: to tie your right hand behind your back and then
- 12:03Speaker 1: we're going to attack your left and kind of see
- 12:05Speaker 1: what you can do. Jim Leonard is built into that mold.
- 12:08Speaker 1: They're built from that mold or cut from that cloth,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I should say. And that's really exciting. Again, it's good
- 12:14Speaker 1: for football in general, regular season football in general, but
- 12:17Speaker 1: especially in the playoffs, right where any a field goal
- 12:21Speaker 1: could sink you, some little minuscule three points that happens
- 12:24Speaker 1: in the first quarter might be the difference between you
- 12:26Speaker 1: you surviving in advancing or you going home and booking
- 12:29Speaker 1: a trip to cant Kun. Points are at a premium.
- 12:31Speaker 1: First downs are at a premium. Every yard, every point matters.
- 12:36Speaker 1: So getting someone that is is a believer in, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 1: tailoring those matchup specific game plans and is also very
- 12:44Speaker 1: good at it, I just think that matters a ton
- 12:46Speaker 1: in the playoffs. That's been my biggest gripe with the
- 12:48Speaker 1: McDermott defense. I think a lot of folks would echo
- 12:50Speaker 1: that as well. I think on the whole, Sean McDermott's
- 12:52Speaker 1: been a good defensive mind and good defensive play call
- 12:55Speaker 1: and coordinator for the Bills. But come playoff time, you know,
- 12:57Speaker 1: when you're playing, when you're going against the best of
- 12:59Speaker 1: the best, and your whole catalog is out there to
- 13:01Speaker 1: be scouted and attacked, you would see those you would
- 13:04Speaker 1: kind of see the cracks a little bit, and you
- 13:06Speaker 1: would see some things fall through those cracks, and you
- 13:08Speaker 1: would start to see, oh, like they're not they're not
- 13:10Speaker 1: really able to hold toe to toe. And I think
- 13:12Speaker 1: that was because they were a bit more reactive than
- 13:13Speaker 1: kind of playing on the front foot and attacking. All right,
- 13:17Speaker 1: I want to scroll through and grab some comments. Great
- 13:21Speaker 1: comment here a question from Joe. Joe says, and I
- 13:23Speaker 1: have a question, which players on this roster do you
- 13:25Speaker 1: believe would translate immediately to his scheme and which players
- 13:28Speaker 1: are the odd men out? So we're going to talk
- 13:29Speaker 1: about that. Essentially, have two segments for this, So I'm
- 13:33Speaker 1: going to talk about Leonard's scheme, structure, and identity or
- 13:37Speaker 1: philosophy as a defensive coach and a defensive mind. And
- 13:40Speaker 1: then on the back end, we're going to talk about
- 13:42Speaker 1: the roster which players, like I alluded to earlier, are like, okay,
- 13:46Speaker 1: somewhat of a round peg in a round hole. Okay,
- 13:48Speaker 1: oval peg, roundhole. Oh, square peg, round hole. We're going
- 13:52Speaker 1: to talk about that and also maybe why it's not
- 13:54Speaker 1: I I'm gonna kind of generalize it now boring to
- 13:57Speaker 1: hit secifics on the back end. I don't think this
- 14:00Speaker 1: is too crazy. Again, it's not seamless, but the Bills
- 14:04Speaker 1: had to add to this defensive roster and their defensive
- 14:07Speaker 1: personnel grouping this offseason. Anyway. You know, you look at
- 14:10Speaker 1: who the UFAs are on the edge, on the interior
- 14:12Speaker 1: at linebacker, you know, safety is a question you already
- 14:16Speaker 1: had to add bodies to the defensive side of the ball.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Even if you stayed with the exact same structure and scheme,
- 14:20Speaker 1: even McDermott and Babbage stay nothing changed, you still needed
- 14:23Speaker 1: to add a couple edges, a couple interior defensive linemen,
- 14:27Speaker 1: a couple of linebackers starting safety, maybe another safety like probably,
- 14:31Speaker 1: you know, depending on what happens, Gadrian Strong, a corner three.
- 14:33Speaker 1: All this stuff you already had to add, guys, So
- 14:36Speaker 1: it's not crazy to think, Okay, now they just need
- 14:38Speaker 1: to add different body types and positional archetypes. But we
- 14:41Speaker 1: are one thousand percent going to get into that. Oh
- 14:42Speaker 1: and now I see super chats. Uh oh, Carl, what's up? Carl?
- 14:47Speaker 1: Thank you for being here and thinking of a super jet.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Carl says, So our coaching staff is coming together really quickly.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Joe Brady as head coach, Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Jim Lennon as defensive coordinator, Jeff Rodgers a special teams coach.
- 14:59Speaker 1: All we need to fill the offensive line coach, right, No,
- 15:03Speaker 1: they I saw it yesterday, but I didn't dive into
- 15:08Speaker 1: it because I had a hell of a day. They
- 15:12Speaker 1: brought in. Yeah, let's say Pat Meyer from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 15:16Speaker 1: He was the Steelers offensive line coach the past couple
- 15:18Speaker 1: of years, or not even the past couple of years,
- 15:21Speaker 1: definitely last season, but let me kind of go into
- 15:25Speaker 1: his I've got some notes on him, but I don't
- 15:26Speaker 1: know where they are. My thing, Yeah, he was. That's
- 15:30Speaker 1: why I thought Steelers O line coach from twenty twenty
- 15:32Speaker 1: two to twenty twenty five, Panthers O line coach from
- 15:35Speaker 1: twenty twenty to twenty twenty one, Chargers O line coach
- 15:38Speaker 1: and run game coordinator from twenty seventeen to twenty nineteen,
- 15:41Speaker 1: and then he was a Buffalo Bills offensive assistant in
- 15:43Speaker 1: twenty fifteen and twenty sixteen. Obviously he's got a longer
- 15:47Speaker 1: resume after that. He's fifty three years old. He's been
- 15:49Speaker 1: around the block a little bit. But yeah, they brought
- 15:50Speaker 1: in they Steelers offensive line coach for them. I actually
- 15:53Speaker 1: think if i'm I also believe they need to address
- 15:56Speaker 1: wide receivers coach still with Adam Henry being gone. I'm
- 16:01Speaker 1: in the super chat, so feel free to anybody put
- 16:03Speaker 1: in the comments a wrong, but I need they need
- 16:04Speaker 1: to address the wide receivers coach. I've been so focused
- 16:07Speaker 1: on wanting Jim Leonard like that's the I've had blinders
- 16:09Speaker 1: for everything else. But they need to address wide receivers coach,
- 16:11Speaker 1: I believe. And then Jamie Ledai leaving to go to
- 16:15Speaker 1: the Dolphins, I believe they need to address their corners
- 16:20Speaker 1: coach or DB's coach. Unless Pelgreeno was gonna take on more,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I believe they have to address that as well. Comment here, uh,
- 16:27Speaker 1: I don't know how to pronounce the name Smith and something.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Thank you for being here, Thank you for the super chat.
- 16:32Speaker 1: The comment of the question is, does Brady being a
- 16:34Speaker 1: first time head coach without insulating himself with any head
- 16:38Speaker 1: coaching experienced coordinators concern you all? Concern you at all
- 16:41Speaker 1: a little bit? Not too much, though. I think Carmichael
- 16:46Speaker 1: has been around the block a bunch as an offensive mind,
- 16:50Speaker 1: as an offensive coordinator, and you know, being in the
- 16:52Speaker 1: Sean Payton system for so long and with his experience,
- 16:56Speaker 1: I don't think, you know, it would be nice if
- 16:59Speaker 1: someone had there, you know, correlation of head coaching experience.
- 17:03Speaker 1: But I think if you guy, if you have guys
- 17:04Speaker 1: who have enough experience, guys who have been around the
- 17:06Speaker 1: block and they know what it's like to put in
- 17:07Speaker 1: a game plan, to execute on game day, to adjust
- 17:10Speaker 1: on game day, you know. I think Carmichael is a
- 17:13Speaker 1: step in that direction. That was my big question for
- 17:16Speaker 1: the OC position. Would Brady grab somebody who is more
- 17:18Speaker 1: install and game plan based during the week or would
- 17:21Speaker 1: he grab somebody who is more of a you know,
- 17:23Speaker 1: help from a game day management standpoint while he was
- 17:26Speaker 1: the CEO of the team as the head coach and
- 17:28Speaker 1: that I think Carmichael has got a foot in both
- 17:30Speaker 1: of those camps a little bit. So it considers me
- 17:34Speaker 1: a little, but I think Carmichael is good enough that
- 17:37Speaker 1: you'll be fine with his experience. Leonard, I think can
- 17:40Speaker 1: run the entire defensive side of the ball by himself
- 17:43Speaker 1: with what he did at Wisconsin being their interim head
- 17:45Speaker 1: coach and then learning even further under Vance Joseph with
- 17:48Speaker 1: his time in Denver. So no, I think it considers
- 17:52Speaker 1: me a little, but I think Carmichael is enough of
- 17:55Speaker 1: a support system that he'll be good on the offensive side.
- 17:58Speaker 1: I think Leonard can run the defensive side and you'll
- 18:01Speaker 1: be good. But I think this is a very fair question,
- 18:03Speaker 1: a very for thought. Brad thank you for being here,
- 18:07Speaker 1: Thank for the super chat. Brad says, So, would you
- 18:09Speaker 1: say Leonard's defense is more about actually beating the offense,
- 18:12Speaker 1: whereas mcdermot's d was more about waiting for the offense
- 18:15Speaker 1: to make a mistake and capitalize. Oh. I don't want
- 18:18Speaker 1: to boil it down to just that, but I think
- 18:20Speaker 1: that's kind of a fair way to look at it.
- 18:21Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I think Leonard's defense is more attack base.
- 18:27Speaker 1: And I hate using that verbiage because I feel like
- 18:29Speaker 1: it makes it seem like, oh, so what are they
- 18:31Speaker 1: are they like that Brian Flores? Are they blitzing fifty
- 18:33Speaker 1: percent of the time? But it is more the way
- 18:35Speaker 1: I like to say, yeah, like playing on the front foot,
- 18:38Speaker 1: beating the offense, trying to use their protection rules against them,
- 18:43Speaker 1: you know, changing pre to post snap pictures like that,
- 18:45Speaker 1: like I read in that quote, making them go to
- 18:47Speaker 1: the go to the sideline and having to adjust and
- 18:48Speaker 1: figure some things out. I do think, yeah, it is
- 18:51Speaker 1: more of hey, we know what you do well, so
- 18:56Speaker 1: we're going to come out of the gate and try
- 18:57Speaker 1: and mitigate that and then put your weak this is
- 19:00Speaker 1: under a microscope and expand upon those in attack Whereas
- 19:04Speaker 1: I do think McDermott's defense was, yeah, hey, we're gonna
- 19:07Speaker 1: come out, We're going to be ourselves, and then we're
- 19:10Speaker 1: going to see what you do. Yeah, try and make
- 19:13Speaker 1: you make a mistake, try and make you go the
- 19:15Speaker 1: length of the field, counting on the idea of like, hey,
- 19:17Speaker 1: eventually they'll get a penalty or eventually they'll turn the
- 19:19Speaker 1: ball over and make a mistake and then we pounce.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Which is funny too because when McDermott would put in
- 19:26Speaker 1: games game plan specific things they work like the again
- 19:29Speaker 1: low hanging fruit example. I always use the odd mirror
- 19:32Speaker 1: stuff that they would use against Kansas City that they
- 19:35Speaker 1: would use against mobile quarterbacks. That was matchup specific, And
- 19:38Speaker 1: when they did that against Kansas City a couple of
- 19:40Speaker 1: years ago, I was like, Okay, we're gonna start to
- 19:42Speaker 1: see more of that, and then other games it was
- 19:44Speaker 1: still just like, no, we're gonna kind of be ourselves
- 19:46Speaker 1: and be ourselves and see what comes of it. So
- 19:49Speaker 1: I do think, yeah, I think McDermott's defense a little
- 19:51Speaker 1: bit about waiting for the offense to make a mistake
- 19:53Speaker 1: and capitalize, but I think more of coming out seeing
- 19:57Speaker 1: what you're gonna do. So again boxing analogy. Instead of
- 20:00Speaker 1: coming out and start throwing hands like Leonard's defense is,
- 20:03Speaker 1: McDermott was kind of come out dance for the first
- 20:06Speaker 1: couple of rounds and Okay, he's working the jab a lot. Okay,
- 20:10Speaker 1: he's really trying to hit me with the upper cut. Oh, okay,
- 20:11Speaker 1: he's really trying to come with that right hook or
- 20:13Speaker 1: the cross. Okay, now let round four, five, six, Let's
- 20:16Speaker 1: start the box. Let's start to throw where I think
- 20:19Speaker 1: Leonard is more. Hey, the bell dings for that first round,
- 20:23Speaker 1: Let's start throwing hands. Good question coming here from Nigel,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Thank you for being here, thank you for the super chat.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And he says, how much overhaul Edward? Are we looking
- 20:33Speaker 1: at ed Sanders Walker? Do they fit? Do we need
- 20:35Speaker 1: a nose tackle? Again? I'm going to talk about this
- 20:37Speaker 1: in more detail on the back hap, but this is
- 20:38Speaker 1: an easy one to kind of address. I think Ed
- 20:40Speaker 1: t J. Sanders and Dean Walker are still fine. Essentially
- 20:43Speaker 1: what you get from Jim Leonard is and kind of
- 20:46Speaker 1: compared to McDermott. So McDermott's defense really what he wanted
- 20:49Speaker 1: to do was a four down overfront. We've talked about
- 20:52Speaker 1: it a lot usually meet overfront. All that means you're
- 20:54Speaker 1: getting a three tech to the you know, the the
- 20:57Speaker 1: passing strength of the team or however you're kind of
- 20:59Speaker 1: doesting like that strong side like in that moment right
- 21:03Speaker 1: and everybody was a fit. That's why you would hear this,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you saying nose tech. I'm assuming you kind of or
- 21:09Speaker 1: NT nose tackle. I'm assuming you know, you know, kind
- 21:11Speaker 1: of the structures and the pieces there. So yeah, t J.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Sanders was a really good three tech. And then it
- 21:16Speaker 1: was like Daikon Jones is the one. Who else is
- 21:18Speaker 1: going to be a one? Dean Walker is playing a
- 21:20Speaker 1: one tech at Oliver is a three. What Jim Leonard does,
- 21:23Speaker 1: Jim Leonard's base defense is a tight front, so odd
- 21:26Speaker 1: front structure, and what a tight front is is, Yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 1: you have a nose tackle head up on the center. Sorry,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I'm moving my hands a lot, so the camera's going
- 21:32Speaker 1: on to focus is insane. There we go. So you
- 21:35Speaker 1: have that nose tackle head up on the center. Could
- 21:38Speaker 1: be shaded a little bit, but you have the nose
- 21:40Speaker 1: which is a zero head up on the center. And
- 21:42Speaker 1: then the other part of the tight front you have
- 21:44Speaker 1: a four eye and a four eye so on your interior.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Essentially you've got a nose head up on the center
- 21:50Speaker 1: and then your two four eyes are on the inside
- 21:53Speaker 1: shoulders of each tackle. I think they need a true
- 21:58Speaker 1: nose tackle. From a run stop standpoint, I think Dion
- 22:01Speaker 1: Walker can moonlight there a little bit. I don't want
- 22:04Speaker 1: him regularly working there. That's just me. I'm also we'll
- 22:07Speaker 1: get into this back half of the episode two, and
- 22:09Speaker 1: I hope there's not a million comments that come through
- 22:10Speaker 1: yelling at me until I get there. I think Dean
- 22:12Speaker 1: Walker had a good rookie year. He surpassed my expectations,
- 22:15Speaker 1: especially as a run defender. I still don't think he's
- 22:18Speaker 1: as strong of a player as was kind of being
- 22:21Speaker 1: hyped up this season. Although he had a strong year
- 22:25Speaker 1: against surpass my expectations. I was very happy and played
- 22:28Speaker 1: much better as a run defender than I ever thought
- 22:29Speaker 1: he would at any point in his career, So kudos
- 22:32Speaker 1: to him. But his body type and the way he plays,
- 22:35Speaker 1: in his skill set and his play style, I don't
- 22:38Speaker 1: think is built to just straight up kind of you
- 22:40Speaker 1: want that nose tackle to be where you're just dropping
- 22:42Speaker 1: a stone in the middle of the defense, and he
- 22:44Speaker 1: ain't going anywhere, and he's not being moved. I want
- 22:47Speaker 1: that guy, right, I want somebody who can hunker down,
- 22:49Speaker 1: anchor mitigate displacement. Walker's not really that guy. He could
- 22:53Speaker 1: rotate there. But you need a true you need a
- 22:56Speaker 1: true nose, you need a true zero. Ed I think
- 22:58Speaker 1: can play as a four eye Sanders I think can
- 23:00Speaker 1: play as a four eye Ed. Ed is also kind
- 23:02Speaker 1: of interesting. You could take Ed. You could stand them
- 23:05Speaker 1: up a little bit, maybe as like a five tech,
- 23:07Speaker 1: and let him rush off the edge. We've seen that
- 23:10Speaker 1: every once in a while in Buffalo, we saw that.
- 23:12Speaker 1: I believe in Houston in college, you could do some
- 23:14Speaker 1: cool stuff with Ed Oliver. But I think he would
- 23:16Speaker 1: be He's a fine fine as a four I I'm
- 23:19Speaker 1: still kind of playing in that bigap world like he
- 23:21Speaker 1: would as if he was a three tech, which is
- 23:23Speaker 1: the outside shoulder of the guard. So similar kind of
- 23:25Speaker 1: world there. But I think you could use Ed as
- 23:28Speaker 1: a four eye T J. Sanders. I'm very questionable a
- 23:31Speaker 1: lot as a whole, but I think he could be
- 23:32Speaker 1: a four eye. But I do think you need some
- 23:35Speaker 1: stronger You need some stronger anchorers there. So I think
- 23:39Speaker 1: it's a minimum you're adding a true nose tackle and
- 23:42Speaker 1: going from there. But I think you do need to
- 23:45Speaker 1: have some more like of a stronger four eye run
- 23:47Speaker 1: defense presence, some guys there and then on the outside.
- 23:49Speaker 1: We'll get into that with Rousseau. Do you do Dorian
- 23:52Speaker 1: Williams as you know, an end or an edge? And
- 23:55Speaker 1: what do you do in the odd front structure and
- 23:56Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. We're gonna get into that.
- 23:57Speaker 1: Great question, great thoughts. There are so many comments. I'm
- 24:01Speaker 1: never going to be able to catch up all of these.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. All right, I am going to I'm coming.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I'm getting into the live comments now. There is a
- 24:18Speaker 1: good comment from tilt as I just saw here. Now,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I don't know what the question is you're referring to,
- 24:23Speaker 1: but Tilt says, I think this is a fair question.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Feels like to me there's more upside than risk. But
- 24:27Speaker 1: just one man's opinion, there is certainly risk though. Yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 1: I do think there's risk from the side of the
- 24:32Speaker 1: fit and I don't and especially with where the Bills
- 24:35Speaker 1: are from a cap standpoint, I don't think in one
- 24:39Speaker 1: off season you're going to be able to just kind
- 24:41Speaker 1: of change everything around. I do think it's going to
- 24:43Speaker 1: be a churn. Ironically maybe similar to Mike McDonald in Seattle,
- 24:47Speaker 1: where it took, you know, a couple off seasons to
- 24:49Speaker 1: kind of get out the body types and skill sets
- 24:51Speaker 1: he didn't want or need and bring in the body
- 24:54Speaker 1: types and skill sets that he wanted. Now, what's a
- 24:56Speaker 1: little risky here with the Bills is if you are
- 24:59Speaker 1: moving an after direction and like I could see Jim
- 25:02Speaker 1: Leonard having success with the Bills and being a head
- 25:04Speaker 1: coaching candidate literally next year or the years after. You
- 25:07Speaker 1: don't know. So if you're committing to this direction, which
- 25:11Speaker 1: you are because you've hired Jim Leonard, what does that
- 25:14Speaker 1: churn look like on the defensive roster and how soon
- 25:17Speaker 1: can you enact it? Is it a churn that's going
- 25:19Speaker 1: to take a couple a couple off seasons? And is
- 25:22Speaker 1: Jim Leonard going to be here for those couple off
- 25:23Speaker 1: seasons and potentially beyond. You would hope so and want
- 25:26Speaker 1: because you are changing the identity of your defense and
- 25:30Speaker 1: the scheme and the structure. They are very much built
- 25:32Speaker 1: for the Sean McDermott defense, which you know, Eric and
- 25:34Speaker 1: I talked about in the film and Wednesday there's more
- 25:37Speaker 1: sameness to the Jim Schwartz style than Sean McDermott. So
- 25:40Speaker 1: I know people wanted Schwartz and people wanted Leonard. But
- 25:42Speaker 1: if you brought Schwartz in more more likeness, there, right,
- 25:45Speaker 1: an easier kind of Okay, let's transfer systems and schemes there,
- 25:48Speaker 1: We're okay. Leonards is more of a I don't want
- 25:51Speaker 1: to say revamp because of what it indicates, but it
- 25:54Speaker 1: is more of a of a churn and it will
- 25:56Speaker 1: require that, which there is some risk, especially when you're
- 25:58Speaker 1: not flush with draft cap. But you're not flush with
- 26:01Speaker 1: cap space, so it will be pretty interesting to kind
- 26:04Speaker 1: of see what they do there, which is why it's
- 26:06Speaker 1: a bit of a risk. But I think it'll be fine. Yep,
- 26:11Speaker 1: because everybody's saying, you know, yeah, I'm seeing comments here, yep.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Wide receivers coach, oh d line coach. Baby Yeah, okay, okay, okay,
- 26:24Speaker 1: see some Chad Hall comments. Somebody said, somebody said, Mick adjustments.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Oh that's funny, that's funny. That's funny, that's funny. Oh yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 1: as Joda Rossa says, come on down, big Citrus or
- 26:37Speaker 1: Godfather Corleone, Yeah, big Citrus, the nose tackle from Iowa
- 26:40Speaker 1: State and then Corleone from Cincinnati. It's funny. I started
- 26:43Speaker 1: looking ato Dominique Orange, who was big Citrus yesterday. They're
- 26:45Speaker 1: gonna need somebody like that. They're gonna need a true
- 26:47Speaker 1: nose also they could use. I want to say, I
- 26:51Speaker 1: think you only signed a one year deal in Detroit.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna start banging the table for this person who
- 26:57Speaker 1: I banged the table for last year. Yeah, Roy Lopez. Uh,
- 27:03Speaker 1: he is a UFA. I wanted him last year for
- 27:05Speaker 1: the Bills to play. Is a one tech. Give me
- 27:10Speaker 1: Roy Lopez as somebody like if you wanted to go
- 27:14Speaker 1: on the the defensive tackle market and get yourself a
- 27:17Speaker 1: free agent his play style, I would take Roy Lopez
- 27:21Speaker 1: as a nose tackle right now. I'm gonna plant that
- 27:23Speaker 1: flag I did last year too. I wanted him as
- 27:24Speaker 1: a nose to h as one tech for the Bills.
- 27:27Speaker 1: He ended up going to Detroit on a one year deal.
- 27:28Speaker 1: He's a UFA. But yeah, you're gonna need somebody like
- 27:30Speaker 1: that a thousand percent? All right, all right, all right?
- 27:34Speaker 1: So now, okay, Charles's if only we had a guy
- 27:39Speaker 1: like pulling a forward. I'm sincerely sorry because I know
- 27:41Speaker 1: I skipped through like a multitude of comments. There's a
- 27:43Speaker 1: there's a lot of people in here, a lot of comments.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Uh uh, throw in there, a lot of comments being
- 27:49Speaker 1: thrown through. I'm gonna get to everything as much as
- 27:51Speaker 1: I can. Circle back or we start to move forward
- 27:53Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, Tonga too, that's fair, Okay, I
- 28:01Speaker 1: like this. Mike says, go find me a giant Samoan
- 28:04Speaker 1: dude to play nose tackle. That's fair. Yeah, josephs I
- 28:06Speaker 1: would take Tonga too. Yeah, Tonga from the Pats. He's
- 28:08Speaker 1: he's kind of nasty. All right. Let's get into Jim
- 28:10Speaker 1: Leonard his scheme, structure, philosophy pieces. So again, base defense
- 28:16Speaker 1: is a tight front. We talked about that four eye
- 28:18Speaker 1: zero tech four I. That is his base defense odd
- 28:21Speaker 1: front structure. The easiest way to think about it, you know,
- 28:26Speaker 1: without getting two technical and are if they're using terms
- 28:29Speaker 1: or things that might go over people's heads. You think
- 28:31Speaker 1: about his defenses at Wisconsin. Oh, thank you for this
- 28:36Speaker 1: great insight and breakdown, SUBDUP. That's awesome, Thank you very much.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Appreciate you for that. His defense at Wisconsin. You want
- 28:43Speaker 1: to think about all the linebackers that he used guys
- 28:45Speaker 1: are on the field a lot, right, It's like Jack
- 28:47Speaker 1: Sambord and it's Nick Herbig. Honestly, it's all the Wisconsin
- 28:50Speaker 1: linebackers like Andrew Van Ginkel and Zach Bond, like all
- 28:54Speaker 1: these types of dudes are you really just need to
- 28:57Speaker 1: get yourself like a Wisconsin East type of deal. So
- 29:01Speaker 1: he is an odd front structure guy. Base defense is
- 29:04Speaker 1: a tight front nickel defense, which he will get into
- 29:08Speaker 1: four down could be over or an underfront, which just
- 29:11Speaker 1: changes where you're putting the three tech two. He implemented
- 29:13Speaker 1: both an over and in under and that nickel defense,
- 29:17Speaker 1: especially Wisconsin from a personnel standpoint, was like a two
- 29:20Speaker 1: four five So two down lineman, four linebackers, five dbs. Again,
- 29:27Speaker 1: everything for him is really hybridized players, a hybridized front.
- 29:31Speaker 1: You're getting that kind of naturally. Yes, Leo Chanal, great
- 29:35Speaker 1: comment there from Patrick saying Leo Shanal should be the
- 29:37Speaker 1: first the Bills first free agent signing. Yeah, it is
- 29:39Speaker 1: guys like that, Guys who can a linebacker who can
- 29:42Speaker 1: play in the B gap and hold it, somebody who
- 29:44Speaker 1: can blitz, someone who can come off the edge, all
- 29:47Speaker 1: these types of things. But yeah, so a bit of
- 29:51Speaker 1: a hybrid defense, and in general, anytime you're in an
- 29:55Speaker 1: odd front, you have kind of more hybridized players. And
- 30:00Speaker 1: from the perspective of you know, I think a lot
- 30:02Speaker 1: of people just know what a three four defenses versus
- 30:04Speaker 1: a four to three. Right, your three four outside linebackers
- 30:07Speaker 1: sometimes they drop into coverage, so they can't just be
- 30:10Speaker 1: purely go forward rush guys. They have to be guys, Hey,
- 30:13Speaker 1: somebody who could drop in to the hook curl or
- 30:15Speaker 1: the curl of flats, right, some guys who could do that.
- 30:17Speaker 1: It's not just okay, all you're doing is putting your
- 30:20Speaker 1: hand in the ground and rushing, rushing, rushing, So you
- 30:22Speaker 1: do need to have a little more just naturally, right,
- 30:25Speaker 1: a little more natural versatility and hybrid nature to some
- 30:28Speaker 1: of your guys on defense. Which is also why I
- 30:31Speaker 1: like an odd front or a three to four defense,
- 30:33Speaker 1: because you get the opportunity to naturally and organically have
- 30:39Speaker 1: you know, pre to post nat picture changing answers for
- 30:42Speaker 1: the defense, because if you're just sitting there in a
- 30:44Speaker 1: three to four presentation, you could be rushing. You know,
- 30:47Speaker 1: you've got your say, you've got your tight front, and
- 30:48Speaker 1: then you two outside guys like maybe you bring all
- 30:50Speaker 1: five you probably you might just bring four, which for
- 30:53Speaker 1: are coming? Is someone dropping off or one of the
- 30:55Speaker 1: inside linebackers come in? Like what's happen? That's just basic
- 30:57Speaker 1: before we even get into simulated pressures, creeper pressures and
- 31:01Speaker 1: run stunts and all these things they're bringing to safety
- 31:03Speaker 1: or any of this stuff. Right, I'm very exciting. This
- 31:07Speaker 1: is the he runs a type of defense that I
- 31:08Speaker 1: gravitate towards schematically, structurally, and philosophically. So let's get into
- 31:15Speaker 1: some pieces. I'm gonna I've got his core beliefs, want
- 31:18Speaker 1: to talk about them and how they're going to funnel
- 31:19Speaker 1: into this defense. So his core beliefs, you know, And
- 31:22Speaker 1: for those who don't know, I know a lot of
- 31:24Speaker 1: people know. He played for the Buffalo Bills and then
- 31:28Speaker 1: played for Rex Ryan at the Jets. But his big
- 31:30Speaker 1: stop and change for me was in two thousand and eight.
- 31:33Speaker 1: He went to Baltimore and was the starting safety opposite
- 31:35Speaker 1: of Ed Reed. That's where he cut his teeth with
- 31:37Speaker 1: Rex Ryan before jumping with him to the Jets. He
- 31:39Speaker 1: was sweet in two thousand and eight with the Ravens,
- 31:43Speaker 1: that team with a rookie Flacco that went to the
- 31:45Speaker 1: AFC Championship. They beat the one seed Tennessee in Tennessee
- 31:48Speaker 1: thirteen to ten. I think Leonard had an interception in
- 31:50Speaker 1: that game or big fumberough coovery or something, and make
- 31:53Speaker 1: a couple of good plays there. So he is a
- 31:57Speaker 1: bit of a Rex Ryan guy, which I don't think
- 31:58Speaker 1: you have a negative connotation. And defensive coordinator Rex Ryan
- 32:01Speaker 1: is tremendous and fantastic and his defense and Dick Leaboe's
- 32:04Speaker 1: defense are what shaped me as a little kid in
- 32:07Speaker 1: my defensive philosophy and what I gravitate towards Doo esthetically.
- 32:11Speaker 1: But Jim Leonard, you know, one of the big quotes
- 32:13Speaker 1: he goes off with is he attributes this quote to
- 32:16Speaker 1: Rex Ryan, who he even says like he may have
- 32:18Speaker 1: taken from someone else. But Jim learn says quote, football
- 32:21Speaker 1: is a simple game complicated by coaches, and he gives
- 32:24Speaker 1: that to Rex Ryan. So starting off with his core beliefs,
- 32:27Speaker 1: they're and tying into that quote. For Jim Leonard, you know,
- 32:30Speaker 1: players need to learn to think for themselves. Becoming adaptable
- 32:32Speaker 1: as a player is extremely invaluable. What he wants to
- 32:35Speaker 1: do as a coach and what he thinks you should do.
- 32:37Speaker 1: As coaches. You try to expose players to the multitude
- 32:40Speaker 1: of scenarios they'll face in games, knowing that you're outside
- 32:44Speaker 1: the white lines on game day and they have to
- 32:46Speaker 1: do it themselves. You are counting on guys to step
- 32:49Speaker 1: up and improve him positive ways. You have to give players.
- 32:53Speaker 1: You have to give them room to grow and room
- 32:56Speaker 1: to think. I think that's the table for his entire philosophy,
- 32:59Speaker 1: where he is about preparation and consistency and giving players
- 33:03Speaker 1: the tools to be able to grow and think and
- 33:07Speaker 1: adjust and make plays. So it's about being prepared and
- 33:11Speaker 1: teaching guys and coaching guys, but not so much to
- 33:14Speaker 1: the point where you're overloaded and there's too much happening
- 33:18Speaker 1: on you mentally, to the point where you can't play
- 33:20Speaker 1: fast because you're so bogged down in your thought process
- 33:24Speaker 1: that you can't adjust. Like somebody, it switches from a
- 33:27Speaker 1: three by one to a two x two where there's
- 33:29Speaker 1: a leverage change or formational change or emotion change, and
- 33:33Speaker 1: all of a sudden, everybody's frantically trying to figure out
- 33:35Speaker 1: what they're going to do, and you've got checks on
- 33:37Speaker 1: top of checks, and it's too much it's too much
- 33:39Speaker 1: and it all just compounds, you know. So he wants
- 33:42Speaker 1: to give players room to grow and room to think.
- 33:45Speaker 1: And there's a fine line between doing that and giving
- 33:47Speaker 1: them what they need but not bogging them down too
- 33:50Speaker 1: much mentally. He's walked that line very well. His four
- 33:55Speaker 1: core beliefs again tying into those quotes there consistency, efficiency, flexibility,
- 34:01Speaker 1: and response versus the opportunity to learn. So consistency breaking
- 34:07Speaker 1: that down into pieces the goal for consistency. You want
- 34:10Speaker 1: your players to play as fast as possible, as physical
- 34:13Speaker 1: as possible, and as confident as possible. And he says
- 34:16Speaker 1: the majority of coaching takes away from those things. So
- 34:20Speaker 1: how do you get your players to play as fast
- 34:21Speaker 1: and as physical and as confident as possible. It starts
- 34:24Speaker 1: with your coaching style, being the same guy on a
- 34:26Speaker 1: daily basis, as far as your approach and how you
- 34:29Speaker 1: handle your players, your communication, your energy, being that same
- 34:32Speaker 1: guy on a daily basis. Teaching progression, How do you
- 34:37Speaker 1: give your information to your players to learn a skill
- 34:41Speaker 1: or a defense? Is it consistent? Do your players know
- 34:44Speaker 1: what to expect? Terminology He talks about always making things cleaner,
- 34:48Speaker 1: So like one word, players know what it is it
- 34:50Speaker 1: clicks in their brain. We don't want to get too convoluted,
- 34:52Speaker 1: too messy, too muddy, routine, daily and weekly understanding how
- 34:57Speaker 1: to get to the second level, third level, how get
- 35:00Speaker 1: to those next level things faster and then gain preparation.
- 35:04Speaker 1: This is a great quote. He says, we are very
- 35:06Speaker 1: complex and what we do in many people's eyes, but
- 35:09Speaker 1: with how I ask our guys to coach it and
- 35:11Speaker 1: the consistency that we have and how we coach and teach,
- 35:14Speaker 1: I think it makes it simple for our guys and
- 35:17Speaker 1: they trust what we do. Again, so I think this
- 35:20Speaker 1: one's so very poignant and important. We are very complex
- 35:24Speaker 1: in what we do in many people's eyes, but with
- 35:27Speaker 1: how I ask our guys to coach it and the
- 35:30Speaker 1: consistency that we have and how we coach and teach,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I think it makes it simple for our guys and
- 35:35Speaker 1: they trust what we do. Right, So, giving the players
- 35:39Speaker 1: the tools, but presenting it in a way that's easy
- 35:41Speaker 1: to learn and easy for them to go and think
- 35:43Speaker 1: and react and play fast mentally, which allows you to
- 35:47Speaker 1: play fast physically. And then kind of wrapping that up piece,
- 35:50Speaker 1: he talks about what can you effectively get your guys
- 35:53Speaker 1: to do on a consistent basis. Anything more than that
- 35:55Speaker 1: is a waste and you're not really doing your players
- 35:57Speaker 1: justice as far as what you're trying to get accomplished.
- 36:00Speaker 1: If you're not doing that, if you're not putting the
- 36:03Speaker 1: game in their hands to let them win for you,
- 36:07Speaker 1: that's it for him too. Again, that ties into the
- 36:11Speaker 1: you know, given players room to grow and room to think.
- 36:13Speaker 1: He wants to put the game in his player's hands
- 36:15Speaker 1: and let them win for you, right, And that means
- 36:19Speaker 1: you are setting them up for success. You're preparing them well,
- 36:22Speaker 1: You're giving them the tools to adapt and adjust in games.
- 36:25Speaker 1: Sean McVay said something similar. I saw this on social
- 36:29Speaker 1: the last couple of weeks, talked about capability versus capacity,
- 36:32Speaker 1: I think is what it was, and capability is I
- 36:35Speaker 1: can give you a direction and you can go execute
- 36:37Speaker 1: exactly what I'm telling you. But capacity is the ability
- 36:40Speaker 1: to learn and understand that and adjust on the fly
- 36:43Speaker 1: and be able to be fluid in the moment. I'm
- 36:45Speaker 1: paraphrasing that. That's what Jim Leonard is right, putting the
- 36:48Speaker 1: game in his player's hands and let them winning it
- 36:50Speaker 1: for you. And you do that by giving them, good prep,
- 36:52Speaker 1: good intel, coaching them, setting them up for success, but
- 36:56Speaker 1: then not bogging them down and overloading them too much
- 36:58Speaker 1: where they where they mentally kind of short circuit and
- 37:01Speaker 1: can't do anything. We saw that happen more often than
- 37:05Speaker 1: you would have liked in the Sean mcdermots stead. So
- 37:09Speaker 1: that's the consistency core belief. The next one is efficiency.
- 37:12Speaker 1: He says, this one's short, clean and easy. Not a
- 37:14Speaker 1: first in, last out type of guy. He believes that
- 37:17Speaker 1: you find ways, you find any ways as possible to
- 37:21Speaker 1: do your job as well as you can and as
- 37:23Speaker 1: efficiently as you can. Always challenge yourself to do better.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Don't waste time doing your job, not just doing your job,
- 37:30Speaker 1: but doing your job better and quicker. And how can
- 37:32Speaker 1: you get your players better faster? Instead of getting player
- 37:36Speaker 1: a better by year three, can you get him better
- 37:38Speaker 1: by year two or you know, mid year, midway through
- 37:41Speaker 1: year two or towards the end of year one. Do
- 37:43Speaker 1: your job better and quicker? And how can you get
- 37:45Speaker 1: your players better faster? This next bullet is arguably probably
- 37:50Speaker 1: my favorite. One of his core beliefs flexibility. So again
- 37:52Speaker 1: his base defense is a tight front. His nickel defense
- 37:56Speaker 1: is a four down over or underfront. He implemented both
- 37:59Speaker 1: and usually that nickel deeven especially Wisconsin was a two
- 38:02Speaker 1: four five two down lineman, four linebackers, and then your
- 38:04Speaker 1: five dbs for the nickel and the points within his flexibility.
- 38:08Speaker 1: You build a sound scheme and then you build in
- 38:12Speaker 1: flexibility for complex problems, less calls, more possible adjustments, which
- 38:17Speaker 1: he believes calms our guys down. We can teach the
- 38:21Speaker 1: basis of what we do, we can teach all of
- 38:23Speaker 1: the finer details and then have minor adjustments to what
- 38:27Speaker 1: we do. And this is very important. This next line
- 38:29Speaker 1: I'm about to read tied to the game planning aspect
- 38:33Speaker 1: and the matchup component of playing an offense. Right, rather
- 38:37Speaker 1: than have more on top of more, we start with
- 38:40Speaker 1: almost bare bones and then add to a game plan
- 38:44Speaker 1: based on what the issues were going to see, based
- 38:47Speaker 1: on how we can dictate. So that ties. And then
- 38:51Speaker 1: he goes into that counterpuncher line that I read earlier
- 38:53Speaker 1: in the episode to kind of lead things off. I
- 38:55Speaker 1: love that though. So rather than have more on top
- 38:58Speaker 1: of more, we start with almost bones and then add
- 39:01Speaker 1: to a game plan based on what the issues we're
- 39:03Speaker 1: going to see and based on what the issues we're
- 39:06Speaker 1: going to see are and based on how we can dictate.
- 39:07Speaker 1: So he doesn't go into the same game, he doesn't
- 39:09Speaker 1: go into different games. It's well, that's good from chap here.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Coach here, I said, it's not what coaches. It's not
- 39:17Speaker 1: what coaches, it's a it's far they can teach and
- 39:20Speaker 1: the players can use. I think there's a type of there.
- 39:22Speaker 1: I'm confused on what to say. I have an idea
- 39:23Speaker 1: what you're getting at, and I like it. But yeah,
- 39:26Speaker 1: so for Jim Leonard, it's not okay, we're here's a
- 39:29Speaker 1: new game plan, stack and stack and stack. He almost
- 39:32Speaker 1: strips it down, it's all. They almost start with bare bones,
- 39:34Speaker 1: like he said, and then they add to the game
- 39:36Speaker 1: plan based on the issues we're going to see. And
- 39:39Speaker 1: that means from the offense, right, Are they a heavy
- 39:42Speaker 1: personnel team. Are they a spread team? Are they a
- 39:46Speaker 1: run team? Are they a run team and it's a
- 39:48Speaker 1: zone scheme? Is it a gap scheme? Are they an
- 39:50Speaker 1: under centered run team a shotgun run game? Do they
- 39:52Speaker 1: work in pistol? How much do they use play action?
- 39:54Speaker 1: What are their passing concepts? Do they push the ball
- 39:57Speaker 1: down field? Are they a quick game type of team.
- 39:59Speaker 1: There's more, even more going from there. Right, But when
- 40:02Speaker 1: you take that game plan, when you start with almost
- 40:05Speaker 1: bare bones and then add to the game plan based
- 40:08Speaker 1: on what the issues are you're going to see, and
- 40:11Speaker 1: then based on how you can dictate and punch them
- 40:14Speaker 1: and attack from that first ding in the first round.
- 40:17Speaker 1: That's what he is, that's what he believes, and again
- 40:20Speaker 1: I think that's what helps the players. Like you said,
- 40:22Speaker 1: like it calms our guys down. You can teach the
- 40:24Speaker 1: basis of what we do, teach all the finer details,
- 40:28Speaker 1: and then have minor adjustments to what you do, so
- 40:30Speaker 1: who you are is still there, but you almost strip
- 40:32Speaker 1: it down to go to the bare bones of your
- 40:35Speaker 1: sound scheme and then build the flexibility from there and
- 40:39Speaker 1: build the game plan from there based on the opponent,
- 40:41Speaker 1: based on the matchups and what they do. There's the
- 40:45Speaker 1: comment from Chap from coach, I figured you would edit
- 40:48Speaker 1: there and there spot on. He says, it's not what
- 40:51Speaker 1: coaches know, it's what they can teach, so the players
- 40:54Speaker 1: can play with less thinking and play fast one thousand percent.
- 40:58Speaker 1: You can't sometimes teach it more is nice, but your
- 41:01Speaker 1: players have to be able to handle, you know, getting
- 41:03Speaker 1: taught more, and they need to be able to put
- 41:05Speaker 1: it into practical application on the field. Having a ton
- 41:07Speaker 1: of different calls and checks and structures and schemes and
- 41:11Speaker 1: all these things. They're only good if the players can
- 41:13Speaker 1: execute it, right. You can only and it's only as
- 41:16Speaker 1: good if the coaches can teach it exactly to your point, right, Like,
- 41:19Speaker 1: it's not just what the coaches know. You have to
- 41:21Speaker 1: be able to teach it. You have to be able
- 41:23Speaker 1: to implement it. You have to be able to coach it.
- 41:26Speaker 1: You have to be able to install it and adjust
- 41:28Speaker 1: it and figure out the problems when you know things
- 41:30Speaker 1: happen to it. All of those things spoken Like a
- 41:32Speaker 1: coach called said, I like that, thank you for editing
- 41:35Speaker 1: it too. I appreciate you so yeah. I love that
- 41:38Speaker 1: flexibility piece. And that flexibility I think stems through everything
- 41:42Speaker 1: for him. Right. It's in his defensive structure, it's in
- 41:46Speaker 1: his you know, the type of players that he brings
- 41:48Speaker 1: in or uses or gravitates towards. And it's in his
- 41:51Speaker 1: game planning, it's in his mentality, it's in his play
- 41:53Speaker 1: calling preparation. All of that flexibility. Flexibility is so important
- 41:58Speaker 1: in today's NFL. I know it doesn't. It may seem
- 42:01Speaker 1: like low hanging fruit or non revelatory to say, or
- 42:03Speaker 1: it might not seem important, but it is. You know.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Being in an ideal world, any football team, offensively, defensively, holistically,
- 42:11Speaker 1: you are whoever you need to be every week to
- 42:14Speaker 1: beat whatever opponent you're playing. If you need to be
- 42:16Speaker 1: a heavy run team this week, if you can be that, awesome.
- 42:19Speaker 1: If you need to be a heavy run team next week,
- 42:21Speaker 1: but more gap scheme or more zone versus what you
- 42:23Speaker 1: were the past week, awesome. If you need to be
- 42:25Speaker 1: spread and go true empty or live in eleven or
- 42:28Speaker 1: ten personnel and attack an offense or a defense the
- 42:31Speaker 1: next week, cool, And then same thing on the other
- 42:33Speaker 1: side of the ball. You're playing an offense that wants
- 42:35Speaker 1: to run it down your throat. You need to be
- 42:36Speaker 1: able to stop the run this week to win. Cool.
- 42:38Speaker 1: You can do that. You're playing an offense the next
- 42:40Speaker 1: week that wants to throw it thirty five forty times
- 42:43Speaker 1: and chuck it around the park. You got to be
- 42:45Speaker 1: able to defend that. The next week. You're playing a
- 42:47Speaker 1: team that has an extremely mobile quarterback and they want
- 42:49Speaker 1: to go read option all day and do all this
- 42:50Speaker 1: stuff with changing the math in the box. You got
- 42:53Speaker 1: to be able to account for that. All of those
- 42:56Speaker 1: things right tie into being flexible, being able to you know,
- 43:01Speaker 1: be like water. I love that quote from Bruce Lee.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I think it's so applicable in football and anything.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Water takes the shape of whatever it's in. Right, If
- 43:09Speaker 1: it's in a river, it flows within the embankment of
- 43:11Speaker 1: the river. If you put it into a cup, it
- 43:13Speaker 1: becomes the cup. Be like water, it means be fluid,
- 43:16Speaker 1: be adaptable, be adjustable, be flexible. That's a huge, hugely
- 43:22Speaker 1: important thing in football in general, but especially in today's
- 43:25Speaker 1: NFL with all the multiplicity you see across the league
- 43:28Speaker 1: and where the league is at from a game planning
- 43:31Speaker 1: and structural standpoint. Offensively and how the pendulum swings towards
- 43:34Speaker 1: the offense and the defensive meta every offseason. You got
- 43:38Speaker 1: to be able to go and be who you need
- 43:40Speaker 1: to be each week in order to be an opponent
- 43:43Speaker 1: beat an opponent. And he's so good with that. So yeah,
- 43:46Speaker 1: the flexibility huge feast. So again, we talked about consistency, efficiency, flexibility.
- 43:50Speaker 1: The last one is response versus the opportunity to learn
- 43:55Speaker 1: and he breaks us down in two ways in the
- 43:57Speaker 1: moment and reflect him. So he says, in the moment,
- 44:00Speaker 1: this is where you have one opportunity for a response.
- 44:02Speaker 1: This is, you know, next play, next drive type of deal.
- 44:04Speaker 1: If you're a corner, you just got beat on a pass,
- 44:06Speaker 1: or your your linebacker just missed a tackle, whatever, you
- 44:09Speaker 1: have the opportunity in the moment for a response. You
- 44:12Speaker 1: need to respond immediately. How do you react to that
- 44:16Speaker 1: current situation of adversity. And once that next play or
- 44:19Speaker 1: that next drive is done, it's time to reflect. Then
- 44:23Speaker 1: when you're reflecting and you're getting to that reflective stage,
- 44:25Speaker 1: it could be in the same game, it could be
- 44:27Speaker 1: in the middle of the week when you're watching film
- 44:29Speaker 1: adjusting right, Reflecting is like a debriefing. What lessons did
- 44:33Speaker 1: you learn, how did you handle your responses? What was
- 44:36Speaker 1: your response in the moment, And when you look back
- 44:39Speaker 1: are you going to grow? So what do you do
- 44:42Speaker 1: in the moment, what did you learn from what you
- 44:44Speaker 1: did in the moment, And when you look back, are
- 44:46Speaker 1: you growing from that? And how are you going forward?
- 44:49Speaker 1: So a couple other pieces his man coverage principles are
- 44:51Speaker 1: all about winning positions. I disciplined it again flexibility. I
- 44:56Speaker 1: also pulled a quote from last offseas when he was
- 45:01Speaker 1: joining the Broncos and he talked about defensive backs having versatility.
- 45:04Speaker 1: He says, quote, you need versatility, whether it's flexibility between corners, safeties,
- 45:08Speaker 1: being able to play outside inside. You can't hide guys anymore.
- 45:11Speaker 1: You have to be able to communicate and think. If
- 45:13Speaker 1: you can't play inside the numbers, they just throw their
- 45:17Speaker 1: best receiver in there and work those matchups. So flexibility
- 45:21Speaker 1: is very important. Positional versatility again, some of it comes
- 45:25Speaker 1: with the hybridized nature of what he is structuring schematically
- 45:28Speaker 1: and all of that. We're going to talk about some
- 45:31Speaker 1: of the current Bills players and how they fit or
- 45:33Speaker 1: don't into this defense in a little bit, but I
- 45:35Speaker 1: kind of want to put a bow on this section here.
- 45:39Speaker 1: I individually am extremely excited. I am telling you why
- 45:43Speaker 1: I'm excited and why you could be potentially excited as well.
- 45:45Speaker 1: That does not mean you have to be. I'm not
- 45:47Speaker 1: telling you to be excited or that they should be
- 45:49Speaker 1: amusing blah blah blah. This is also again like a
- 45:52Speaker 1: little personal for me too, Like little Me I said
- 45:56Speaker 1: this on the show too. Is they little me loved
- 45:59Speaker 1: Jim Leonard at was con in college. I just liked
- 46:02Speaker 1: the way he played. And then he came to the
- 46:04Speaker 1: Bills and I wanted him to get more playing time,
- 46:07Speaker 1: but he didn't. And then he went to Baltimore and again,
- 46:10Speaker 1: for those who know and read, is my favorite player
- 46:12Speaker 1: of all time. So during the drought, when the Bills
- 46:14Speaker 1: would he falter and look terrible by like week five
- 46:16Speaker 1: or week six, I would kind of focus on the Ravens,
- 46:20Speaker 1: and so Jim Leonard going there in two thousand and eight,
- 46:22Speaker 1: I loved him, and I loved that individual team. And
- 46:26Speaker 1: then he went to the Jets and was sick with
- 46:28Speaker 1: Rex Ryan and was a big part of those defenses
- 46:30Speaker 1: and how good they were. And then he goes to
- 46:32Speaker 1: Wisconsin and just what he was schematically and structurally as
- 46:36Speaker 1: a defensive coordinator and defensive mind for those seasons in
- 46:41Speaker 1: Wisconsin again when he was the DC from twenty seventeen
- 46:43Speaker 1: to twenty twenty two. Just I've liked him for a while.
- 46:49Speaker 1: I'm not big into like, oh, I've got receipts of
- 46:51Speaker 1: my takes and know all that stuff, but I found
- 46:54Speaker 1: it during the week when I heard that he was
- 46:57Speaker 1: rumored to be a candidate for them. I was tweeting
- 46:59Speaker 1: about him in twenty twenty three is wanting him to
- 47:00Speaker 1: come in and be the Bills defensive coordinator, and it
- 47:04Speaker 1: was tied to him, but also the type of scheme,
- 47:07Speaker 1: instruction and philosophy everything that I broke down of what
- 47:10Speaker 1: he is here. I wanted that in the Bills for
- 47:13Speaker 1: a long time now. It didn't have to be an
- 47:15Speaker 1: odd front structurer a three to four type of structure,
- 47:17Speaker 1: right I talked last offseason, I wanted Luanna Rumo coming
- 47:20Speaker 1: in because of his matchup base nature and what he
- 47:22Speaker 1: was defensively. I like a lot of what the matchup
- 47:30Speaker 1: base defensive coordinators do and that was different from Sean McDermott,
- 47:33Speaker 1: and I wanted that in the Bills defense. And Jim
- 47:38Speaker 1: Leonard is a big step in that direction. And then
- 47:40Speaker 1: personally for me, you know what I like and gravitate
- 47:43Speaker 1: towards as a defensive style he plays that odd front
- 47:48Speaker 1: structure and then tying into it too. I want to
- 47:49Speaker 1: bring up a couple of last little notes and pieces again,
- 47:52Speaker 1: hybrid fronts and coverages really good and fun for those
- 47:56Speaker 1: of you who watch the show. The next thing I'm
- 47:57Speaker 1: about to say, is the disguis coverage BINGO every week
- 48:00Speaker 1: really good and fund simulated and creeper pressures, his simulated game,
- 48:04Speaker 1: his creeper pressure game really good. Fluid personnel adaptations, streamline
- 48:10Speaker 1: calls that have presentation complexities to confuse and attack offenses.
- 48:15Speaker 1: These are my own notes. I'm just reading it off
- 48:17Speaker 1: some stuff I had posted earlier in the week. So again,
- 48:20Speaker 1: hybrid fronts and coverages really good and fun. Simulated and
- 48:23Speaker 1: creeper pressures, fluid personnel adaptations, streamline calls that have presentation
- 48:28Speaker 1: complexities to confuse and or attack offenses. Match and rules
- 48:32Speaker 1: based coverages good pressure packages for matching rules based coverages.
- 48:37Speaker 1: That's you know, you're hey, I'm the Apex. If number
- 48:40Speaker 1: one does this, I do that. If number two does this,
- 48:43Speaker 1: I do that. If there's if it's a three by one,
- 48:45Speaker 1: this is what we're playing, we're watching We're key in
- 48:48Speaker 1: this guy. You know, if we're playing Palms, we're key
- 48:50Speaker 1: and two to one, all that kind of stuff. I
- 48:53Speaker 1: just gravitate towards that type of match based coverage. What
- 48:57Speaker 1: he does. What's also interesting too, as I mentioned again,
- 49:00Speaker 1: odd front structure wielded hybridized skill sets and body types.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Played a bunch of single high in match coverage stuff
- 49:07Speaker 1: in Denver, so I wonder how much single high we're
- 49:09Speaker 1: gonna get here in Buffalo, which I think would be
- 49:12Speaker 1: a real boom to Cold Bishop. Letting him play down
- 49:15Speaker 1: and in around the box as that down safety, I
- 49:17Speaker 1: think would be really beneficial to him. Not that he
- 49:20Speaker 1: can't play deep at all, but I think his skill
- 49:22Speaker 1: set is much better suited to be a monster man
- 49:24Speaker 1: or an apex or a down safety in and around
- 49:27Speaker 1: the box, going sideline to sideline. I just think that
- 49:29Speaker 1: would be absolutely sick and most very beneficial to Cold Bishop.
- 49:33Speaker 1: So get him a true ball hawking, rangey safety to
- 49:35Speaker 1: play the post and rock those single high coverages behind him.
- 49:38Speaker 1: But you got a lot of single high in Denver,
- 49:40Speaker 1: and you also got a lot of match coverage in Denver,
- 49:43Speaker 1: and within that wanted to read this quote from Vance Joseph,
- 49:48Speaker 1: Broncos defensive coordinator on what his defense kind of was
- 49:51Speaker 1: or is. Vance Joseph says, quote, I don't call a
- 49:55Speaker 1: lot of man. What we do is mostly pressure up
- 49:58Speaker 1: front with matchup principles. In the It's like playing a
- 50:01Speaker 1: box in one defense in basketball, it's zoned inside and
- 50:05Speaker 1: match outside. These days, the beauty of playing great defense
- 50:09Speaker 1: in this league is the ability to have different structures.
- 50:12Speaker 1: If you can get defensive backs close to wide receivers
- 50:14Speaker 1: without giving it that quote unquote man tag, that's the
- 50:18Speaker 1: expertise because when you call man, the player has to
- 50:21Speaker 1: cover both sides of the route. In this league, that's difficult.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Everyone has great receivers and the quarterbacks are so accurate
- 50:28Speaker 1: with what we call. We're giving the player one side
- 50:30Speaker 1: of the route and we preach leveraged. If you win
- 50:33Speaker 1: your leverage outside and the receiver breaks inside, you're going
- 50:36Speaker 1: to have a teammate there. It can look like man,
- 50:39Speaker 1: but it's not man. That's the beauty of what we
- 50:41Speaker 1: do and that's the secret. This Broncos defense has been
- 50:44Speaker 1: widely successful in the past couple years. I know the
- 50:46Speaker 1: Bills have gotten the best of them at times, and
- 50:51Speaker 1: is the comment theory. Yeah, he also had patser Tanto
- 50:52Speaker 1: which helps single high. Very fair, but they're still able
- 50:55Speaker 1: to kind of rock those match coverage principles and win
- 50:58Speaker 1: I mean certan out and their defense didn't completely fall apart.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Granting up the opponents that you play and all that
- 51:05Speaker 1: stuff kind of comes into play as well. We're not
- 51:06Speaker 1: saying that. I'm not saying that it doesn't, but I
- 51:09Speaker 1: just like what Leonard brings sims, creepers, hybridized fronts and
- 51:15Speaker 1: coverage structures and match coverage principles. Again, you got to
- 51:20Speaker 1: teach that stuff. Match coverage is awesome, but you've got
- 51:22Speaker 1: to be able to teach it. You have to be
- 51:23Speaker 1: able to implement it. You have to get your players
- 51:26Speaker 1: to understand it and not only buy in, but understand
- 51:28Speaker 1: it and what they're doing. When you are playing rules
- 51:31Speaker 1: based coverages, everybody has to know the rules and everybody
- 51:35Speaker 1: has to know them in the same way, see them
- 51:38Speaker 1: at the same time, react the same way. If we
- 51:40Speaker 1: are playing a rule where if number two does A,
- 51:45Speaker 1: we're going to do B. Everybody has to see number
- 51:47Speaker 1: two do A at the same time and know where
- 51:49Speaker 1: they need to be and know what they need to do.
- 51:52Speaker 1: So all of this again, it's just more front foot
- 51:54Speaker 1: playing right. Dictating to an offense, Hybridized fronts and coverage
- 51:58Speaker 1: structure is fluid personnel and game planning. Simulated pressures creeper
- 52:04Speaker 1: pressures being able to attack the protection rules of an
- 52:06Speaker 1: offense or potentially heat up a quarterback without having to
- 52:09Speaker 1: truly blitz and still having numbers and coverage. But again,
- 52:12Speaker 1: to do that regularly, you need hybridized type of players.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Guys who can drop, Guys who can rush, Guys who
- 52:19Speaker 1: can you know, be the spiker on a stunt, Guys
- 52:21Speaker 1: who can be the looper, a long looper versus a
- 52:23Speaker 1: short one, you know, and teaching all of those elements
- 52:25Speaker 1: and those pieces. But from a schematic standpoint, a structural standpoint,
- 52:30Speaker 1: and a philosophical standpoint, I think this is exactly what
- 52:33Speaker 1: the Bills needed. It's also personally what I gravitate towards
- 52:38Speaker 1: from a stylized standpoint and what I want, And just
- 52:42Speaker 1: for any defense, let alone for the Bills, I think
- 52:44Speaker 1: this is a big, big move in the right direction.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I said it jokingly earlier in the week, not to
- 52:49Speaker 1: get into too much of it now, but you know,
- 52:51Speaker 1: I've been I've been underwhelmed by what's happening with the
- 52:54Speaker 1: Bills this offseason, and I've been a bit underwhelmed by
- 52:58Speaker 1: a bunch of their roster moves and decisions from a
- 53:00Speaker 1: free agency and draft standpoint the past several years. This
- 53:04Speaker 1: hiring makes me kind of almost forgive and forget all
- 53:06Speaker 1: of that. That's how excited I am about Jim Leonard
- 53:09Speaker 1: because of what he is schematically, structurally and philosophically. But
- 53:14Speaker 1: now let's tie that into you know what hiring Jim
- 53:18Speaker 1: Leonard means for the Bills defensive roster or personnel. It's
- 53:20Speaker 1: been asked throughout the episode here. I don't think it
- 53:24Speaker 1: is a complete like for like, as we talked about
- 53:29Speaker 1: earlier and kind of alluded to, you need to have
- 53:32Speaker 1: again even just off that basic thing. Oh, I gotta stop, Carl,
- 53:36Speaker 1: thank you again for still being here, thanking you for
- 53:37Speaker 1: the super chat. Carls is which free agents would Leonard
- 53:40Speaker 1: want back for his scheme? Oh Ran running everyone down here,
- 53:43Speaker 1: Bosa Daiquon, Ogin, Joby, Milano, Epanessa, Trey DeMar, cam Poyer,
- 53:49Speaker 1: Shaq Phillips, Franklin Savage. Honestly, I'm probably gonna say none
- 53:56Speaker 1: of these guys are a great fit and or great players.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Oguin Joby may be because he played four I for
- 54:01Speaker 1: the Steelers two seasons ago, what you know, kind of
- 54:04Speaker 1: what he was doing. I personally like Matt Mulano, and
- 54:08Speaker 1: you know, I like the way he played towards the
- 54:09Speaker 1: end of the year at Panessa. I think he's a
- 54:13Speaker 1: fine rotational player. I don't think any of these guys
- 54:15Speaker 1: are a great fit. Are guys that Leonard would prioritize
- 54:17Speaker 1: having back. I think you could prioritize bringing Tray or
- 54:19Speaker 1: want wanting Trey White back and have him be your
- 54:21Speaker 1: third corner. Trey I thought played well this year. Also
- 54:25Speaker 1: depending on what happened with Dorian Strong, you got a
- 54:27Speaker 1: nice three and a four. In an ideal world, Max
- 54:30Speaker 1: is healthy and it's Hairston and Benford where you're starting corners.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I think you know, he could want Trey Backtray is
- 54:36Speaker 1: a good match coverage corner and rules base and understanding
- 54:39Speaker 1: passing off and collecting. You know, especially in single high
- 54:42Speaker 1: stuff you want to play cover three and they're gonna
- 54:44Speaker 1: run across her if you want to kind of let
- 54:46Speaker 1: it go and then have that safety slice and drive
- 54:48Speaker 1: on it. You replaced him, or you're you're collecting something
- 54:51Speaker 1: across or or a post or whatever's coming across from
- 54:54Speaker 1: that other side. I think you could welcome Trey back.
- 54:59Speaker 1: A lot of the you know, dem are no Poy
- 55:01Speaker 1: or no Shaq, I think would be cool. I keep
- 55:04Speaker 1: I keep seeing Shack and I think Shaq loss in
- 55:07Speaker 1: no disrespect, But yeah, I think you could bring back
- 55:10Speaker 1: Jack Thompson and Trey White from here, maybe Ogan Joby,
- 55:14Speaker 1: but I was kind of underwhelmed with that signing in general,
- 55:17Speaker 1: and even with what he was at Pittsburgh, and then
- 55:20Speaker 1: I thought he was underwhelming as an actual bill. Day
- 55:24Speaker 1: Quon is a possibility, and to have him play as
- 55:26Speaker 1: a four eye, I think that would be solid kind
- 55:30Speaker 1: of going through. But yeah, Bosa, I don't think so Dayquon.
- 55:37Speaker 1: I think you could bring him in, put him as
- 55:38Speaker 1: a four eye. Ogen Joby maybe do as a four eye,
- 55:41Speaker 1: but I think I'd rather have day Quon. But then also,
- 55:44Speaker 1: Daiquon has been spouting off a little bit on social
- 55:46Speaker 1: so maybe I don't think he wants to come back
- 55:47Speaker 1: or is coming back. Milano my heart says cool. He's
- 55:52Speaker 1: also Mlnald's a really good blitzer and a good dropper.
- 55:55Speaker 1: He could play uh Milonald's Mlonald's tough a little for
- 55:59Speaker 1: me from a fits stand point, he as Kamory references
- 56:02Speaker 1: Daiquon's social So I would from these, I would say
- 56:07Speaker 1: Trey and Shack is where I would go, right, now
- 56:09Speaker 1: I think Shack could be an inside linebacker for you
- 56:13Speaker 1: in a in like an odd front structure, in a
- 56:15Speaker 1: three to four structure, and then Trey could be your
- 56:17Speaker 1: corner three who honestly could be a corner two and
- 56:19Speaker 1: played like a corner two for a good chunk of
- 56:21Speaker 1: this year. Good question there, Carl. Also good comment here
- 56:24Speaker 1: from Carl from a coach again saying coach Chapman saying,
- 56:27Speaker 1: Carl Adams, dB coach Malabama. Yeah, sab in World Cover
- 56:31Speaker 1: seven match coaching clinic really good to understand some of
- 56:34Speaker 1: the rules and adjustments one thousand percent. There's like a
- 56:38Speaker 1: coaching clinics out there if you want to understand match
- 56:42Speaker 1: and rules based coverages. Actually know what we should do
- 56:44Speaker 1: and what I might do. Now m M. I'll see
- 56:48Speaker 1: how the off season schedule lines up, because now I
- 56:50Speaker 1: have to dive into certain free agents and draft prospects
- 56:53Speaker 1: that fit in general in addition to just doing my
- 56:56Speaker 1: overall evaluation. Maybe we'll do a match in rules based
- 56:59Speaker 1: coverage episode he on the show from a single high
- 57:01Speaker 1: standpoint and from a two high standpoint. That would be
- 57:05Speaker 1: really cool. That's that's kind of my wheehouse with what
- 57:07Speaker 1: I gravitate towards and you know, match coverages and palms
- 57:11Speaker 1: and quarters and stubby and special and all that kind
- 57:14Speaker 1: of stuff from the Sabing world, some of the Fangio world,
- 57:18Speaker 1: all that stuff. There's a lot out there. Maybe we'll
- 57:20Speaker 1: dive into that in a full episode. A good pull
- 57:22Speaker 1: on this, coach. I appreciate you for that. So now
- 57:25Speaker 1: what hiring Jim Leonard means for the bills, defensive rosters,
- 57:28Speaker 1: last person out. We got into it a little bit
- 57:31Speaker 1: with that question and that super chat there from Carl.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Thank you again for your super chat. I'm gonna start
- 57:37Speaker 1: from the back end and go front because I think
- 57:39Speaker 1: that's the easiest way to look at it. I do
- 57:42Speaker 1: expect to see more single high coverages, which again I
- 57:46Speaker 1: think is beneficial for Cold Bishop. I keep saying it.
- 57:49Speaker 1: I think Cold Bishop is at his best in and
- 57:50Speaker 1: around the box like he was at Utah, using him
- 57:53Speaker 1: as that monster man Apex big Nickel type of deal. Honestly,
- 57:57Speaker 1: in an ideal, ideal world, even though I'm not ready
- 58:01Speaker 1: to give up on Tarran, I would love for Cole
- 58:05Speaker 1: Bishup to be the new Nickel and have them go
- 58:07Speaker 1: Big Nickel, and then you get two new safeties. I
- 58:11Speaker 1: think nickel is becoming. Nickel has always kind of been
- 58:14Speaker 1: a bit of a skeleton key position for defenses in
- 58:17Speaker 1: terms of what it can unlock and do, and Taron
- 58:20Speaker 1: Johnson was honestly at the forefront of that for a while.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Having a nickel like Arran who could function as a
- 58:24Speaker 1: true coverage nickel but then play the run like a
- 58:26Speaker 1: linebacker was great. But now with all the heavy personnel
- 58:30Speaker 1: that you're getting, it's tough for Tarran to play the
- 58:33Speaker 1: run against a heavier a big twelve personnel or twenty
- 58:37Speaker 1: one or twenty two. You have to go with three linebackers.
- 58:40Speaker 1: You have to go base more and kind of wield
- 58:43Speaker 1: that a bit. And so I think teams that have
- 58:46Speaker 1: a big nickel or you know, a really athletic third
- 58:49Speaker 1: linebacker something in that way gives you more fire with
- 58:55Speaker 1: fire options for your defense. It gives you the opportunity
- 58:58Speaker 1: to not kind of be outgunned from a personnel standpoint
- 59:01Speaker 1: or dictated to from personnel. But also at the same time,
- 59:05Speaker 1: I think it allows you to stay and play football situationally,
- 59:09Speaker 1: which I think is where a lot of the league
- 59:11Speaker 1: is going. Greg Olsen did a really good piece on
- 59:14Speaker 1: this early in the season. But you know, offenses they
- 59:17Speaker 1: want to use personnel to dictate to a defense. Right, Hey,
- 59:20Speaker 1: we're gonna bring on another tight end because we want
- 59:22Speaker 1: them to bring on a third linebacker, and then we're
- 59:24Speaker 1: gonna pass it on them because we think we can
- 59:25Speaker 1: take advantage of that third linebacker. Right. Again, that ties
- 59:29Speaker 1: into more things, right, can that second tight end block?
- 59:31Speaker 1: Can you stay and nickel? Do you not have to
- 59:32Speaker 1: do that? All these types of things, right, But it
- 59:36Speaker 1: brought up the question of, like, Okay, instead of matching personnel,
- 59:40Speaker 1: just play the situation. If a team is in twelve personnel,
- 59:43Speaker 1: but you know, on second down, but you know seventy
- 59:46Speaker 1: percent of the time they're throwing the ball on second down,
- 59:49Speaker 1: stay in nickel because you're gonna play the ops. You're
- 59:52Speaker 1: gonna play the situation instead of playing the personnel. But
- 59:55Speaker 1: I think if you've got like a big nickel, or
- 59:57Speaker 1: you've got hybridized players like and tends to gravitate towards
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: or bringing for a system, then it kind of doesn't
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: really matter. You don't have to change out personnel as much.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: You don't have to go, Okay, now we're in nickel,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: oop Now we're in base. Now we're in dime op,
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: now we're in a big nickel. Like, you don't have
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: to change all these things. You've got the natural answers
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: baked into what you already have. So I think Big
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: Nichols kind of moving towards a skeleton key. You know,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: you look at what Jalen Petrie does for the Texans,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: You look at what Kyle Hamilton does for the Ravens.
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: Even though Kyle Hamilton is a unicorn kind of in
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: and of himself. But I just think there is a
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: lot to that, a lot of benefits to that move
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: of Cold Bishop being your big nickel. Tarren Johnson also
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: had a down year last year. I'm not completely ready
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: to write him off, but in an ideal world for me,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: I'd move Cold Bishop to big nickel and I bring
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: in two new safeties. I don't think that's gonna happen,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: but or so I should say so if you're gonna
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: play single high stuff, and even if you're not, even
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: if Sean mcdermot's defense was staying and nothing was changing there,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: I think you need a more rangey, ballhawking based safety
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: to pair with Cole Bishop. Even more so if you're
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: gonna play more single high and you need more of
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: a single high post safety. Bishop has improved there a bit,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: but that's not Cole Bishop. Let him excel down as
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: a down safety in and around the box. Get yourself
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: a ballhawk, rangy post safety on the back end, hiding
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: Poyer could do each do a little bit of everything.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: But to kind of put this into perspective from like
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: a Bills lens or through a Bill's lens, you need
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: someone who's more Micah Hyde than Jordan Poyer to pair
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: with Cole Bishop. I think Bishop is more Poyer than
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: he is Hide. Get yourself with Micah Hide. Get yourself
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: the rangy ballhawky type of player who can cover in
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the post, who can do the same thing from to
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: split field structures. Right, you're still gonna play some cover two.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: You're still gonna play some quarters. You'll play some cover six,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: you're gonna play some cover eight. These too high worlded stuff, right,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: some two man from time to time, but you need
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: you need to pair Bishop with a rangey, ballhawking type
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: of safety anyway, but especially if you're gonna play more
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: single high stuff, put that guy in the post. Let
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Bishop be r down safety now again can't be completely
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: siloed because there are gonna be times where Bishop, you know,
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: maybe you rock and roll your safeties and Bishop is
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: the single high post safety and you need that other
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: guy to come down and play into the box. So
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: you still need, you know, some versatility between those two guys.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: But yeah, I think you start on the back end.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: You need a starting safety who gravitates more towards range
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: and kind of a ball hawking nature. I don't think
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: that guy is on the roster right now. I don't think,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: you know, bringing Hamlet or poyterback is an answer for that.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: I don't think Jordan Hancock is that guy coming here
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: saying Genesis Smith is a lock at sixty. Genesis Smith
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: safety from Arizona really fluid in the post, glides in
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: the post, ballhawking rangey. I started looking too his tape yesterday,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: some fun stuff from him there kind of see what
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: happens there. Oh, Charles is PJ Lock from Denver? Yeah,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: could potentially bring it. I wonder who you get from
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: the Denver world. I have to look into their contracts
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: and see who's UFA. Usually you see when a new
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: coordinator comes in, they start to bring in those guys
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: who understand their system or who they know can rock.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: You know. It could be a linebacker, could be a safety.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: It could be guys that Leonard will bring in from
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: his time at Wisconsin or from his time in Denver. PJ.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Lock is interesting. I have to look at his contract.
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: I think he's a UFA potentially. I've actually been looking
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: at before Leonard got hired. I was looking at Kobe
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Bryant from Seattle. But I think he's gonna get paid
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: way too much. But but I think he can gets
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: a job done. But if you're gonna play more single high, yeah,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: you know, kind of taking a peek seeing what you got.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: But yeah, PJ. Lock, other guys from Denver too, I
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: see yah. Someone else said it to John Franklin Myers
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: the UFA. Yeah, I read yesterday that I don't think
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: they're gonna that. It's apparently they're not going to bring
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: him back. So yeah, who do you start to take
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: pluck from those previous stops from the DC will really
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: be interesting. So again, back end, get yourself starting safety,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: who gravitates more towards range and ball hawking, whether you're
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: playing more too high or not, that's I think that's
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: an ideal for Bishop linebacker. Huh so complicated, right, Matt
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Mlonald's a UFA shack is a UFA. You're sitting there
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: looking at linebacker and start thinking it starts with Terrel Bernard? Right?
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Was his fall off this past year really due to
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: the injuries or was it something more? You know, he's
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: not a good block deconstruction type of guy, which again
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: is part of why I think you need a true
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: nose from a skill set and play style standpoint, got
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: a guy who can eat blocks and eat bodies and
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: help keep some dudes clean behind him. But also why
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: you kind of need to reinforce your four eyes too,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: because it can't just be purely you know, run or
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: penetration based four eyes. You need those guys to get
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: to eat some space, to be able to play gap
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: in a half, but also still shoot at times, maybe
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: even true two gap within that as well. The good
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: thing is for Terrel Bernardo. What's nice about Terrel Bernard
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: going back to his time at Baylor, Terrel Bernard is
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: a good blitzer. So I think from like a simulated
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: standpoint and a creeper standpoint, you can get some cool
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: stuff with Terrell Bernard. Again, he's not a big I
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: don't want him taken on into your offensive lineman. Who
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: are you know, climbing to the second level and he's
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: got to take those blocks on and stack and shed.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: He's never gonna be that type of guy. He's not
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: that type of guy. He beats them with angles and
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: processing and beating guys to a spot. We'll see what
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: he can do in that regard. But I think Bernard
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: before they were gonna move to Leonard, my thought was
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: take Bernard, move him to will and let him kind
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: of play next to a Shaq Thompson more of like
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: a boy he Luacan Devin Lloyd size type of linebacker
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: where you can get more size and little more thump
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: and downhill ability. But I think Bernard could work a
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: bit as a blitzer. Also, obviously we know what he
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: can do is coverage, so you have, you know, the
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: ability to come forward but still drop a little bit.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: The rest of the second level is interesting, like like, now, yeah,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: what do you do with Dorrian Williams? Do you We've
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: seen them use him as like them. We've seen the
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Bills use Dorriy Williams like a Sam linebacker, like so
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: essentially an edge presence against teams that go heavier. You know,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: we've seen him do it against the Ravens, for example,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: and Dorian's got good length, he can drop into coverage
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: a little bit. We've seen his ability to kind of rush,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: not as a true edge rusher. You know, he's not
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: winning with like pass rush moves and oh man, you
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: know what a great uh you know what a great
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: cross chop and great ghost move or all what speed
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: to power on this and that. But we've seen them
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: use him as a guy that they'll mug the a
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: gap with and let him pick guys on games up front.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: And he he is good coming forward because he hits
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: like a freight train. He's got good length and he's compacked.
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: So do you use him as kind of a sam
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: linebacker on that outside? I don't think he's a great
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: threat in terms of a pass rusher because he's not
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: somebody that I don't think is gonna win off the
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: edge one on one. But you kind of line him
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: up as that where he really is like a three
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: four outside linebacker as opposed like a three four edge
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: or three four defensive end. It is interesting. And then yeah,
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: what do you do what I think is the other spot. Right,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: So Greg Russou ties into this a little bit because
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Greg Russou is going to be an edge. But I
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: think Greg Russo is your outside. I think he is
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: your edge player. Like he's the off the edge five tech.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: He's the guy that's coming around the edge. He's going
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: to be more of the I'm not comparing the two
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: and saying he's this guy, but he's more of the TJ. Watt, right.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: I don't think he's gonna be the four I he
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: could be. I think you could and this is again
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: where the scheme conversation comes in, Right, I think you
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: could stand up Greg Russo in a two point stance
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: and let him rush off the edge. He's also decently
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: adept enough at dropping into coverage and doing some stuff.
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: But I think you can line Greg Rousseau up in
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: a two point and let him be your three four
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: outside linebacker three four edge. Right. I also think you
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: could kick him inside from time to time and kind
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: of let him rock as a you know, three four
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: defensive end in terms of you know that guy who
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: is more. Sorry, I'm looking at multiple things as I'm
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: doing these things right now, If you know, you kind
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: of want to put somebody at that four eye from
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: the defensive end standpoint, I don't think the size or
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: weight is completely great. I'd rather have it be more
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: of a thicker, heavier body. But with his length and
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: his ability to kind of play with leverage and muddy
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: up the run, you could kick him inside every once
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: in a while there. But I think he's more of
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: your three four defensive end outside linebacker type of deal.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: As we have to get used to this terminology and
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: all this stuff. I think Michael Hoyt similar thing. We'll
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: see how he comes back from the Achilles injury. He's
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: another guy three four defensive end. Let him rock off
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: the edge. He's another like your TJ. Wack type of guy.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: He could drop into coverage a little bit, but you're
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: letting him rock off the edge. He's a three to
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: four outside linebacker edge. Javon Solomon probably falls into that world,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: but I'd like somebody a bit better there. Landon Jackson,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: I think is a question now big time with his
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: fit across the board, you know what side eyes do
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: they have him play at. You know he's got experience
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: inside from his time at Arkansas, but what you know,
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: with what he was as a senior and then brought
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: in here to do, like, are you looking at him
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: as you know, do you try to beef him up
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: a little bit and have him be a three to
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: four defensive end, and do you make Landon Jackson a
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: four eye or do you try to lighten him a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: little bit and let him play in a two point
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: and have him be a three to four outside linebacker
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: or edge like Rousseau and Hoyt, or keep him at
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: the same weight that you kind of act think he's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: like two seventy five to eighty. That'll be really interesting.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Uh again, in terms of the fit and what you're
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: doing with guys up front, I I wonder all of that,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: you know, I think I think the interior defensive line
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: is a bit again, not not streamlined, but a little
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: more simplistic from the standpoint of okay, like Dean Walker,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: I think could play a four eye and Moonlight a
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: bit as a nose. Dean Walker is an interesting one
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: now because I mean he's always an outline with how
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: he's built and what he is. I mean, he's a
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: mountain of a man, but he plays more of a
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: finesse game. You need you do need a true nose,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: like I talked about earlier, You gotta have something like
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: a stone you can just drop into the center of
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: that defensive line and plays a zero. So yeah, college
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: guys that people are referencing earlier, Dominique, Orange, Big Citrus,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: the Godfather, you know, Corleone from Cincinnati, or for me,
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: I'm looking immediately at free agency and I'm looking at
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: Roy Lopez. Give me Roy Lopez put him at defensive tackle.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: Yeas the comment it just came in there from IDL seven, p.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: One six. Yeah, you're looking if you want archetypes, right,
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: you're actually I think you have two of them. Yeah,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: Richard Seymour is who you're thinking of for like a
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: three four defensive end type of archetype. Or Vince Wilfork
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: is your nose that you are looking for, or Casey
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Hampton from the Steelers is one I always kind of
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: go with there in terms of like you're looking at
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: somebody from a size and a weight standpoint, or a
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: body type standpoint, or a skill set or a play
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: style standpoint, all of that. Right, So, I do think
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: you need a true nose. Ed I think can play
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: as a four eye Sanders I think can play as
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: a four eye, but I don't love his play style
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: or fit now in a three four defense. I think
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: he's I think he's much more suited to be a
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: four down three tech in a penetrating front than he
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: is to be a three to four defensive end in
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: a four eye and in the tight front. But it's
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: not horrible on the inside, right, I think Walker you
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: can do some things with at Oliver. You can do
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: some things with Again, get creative with at Oliver. Put
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: him in a two point and have him be your
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: three to four outside linebacker at times, and some rush
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: packages or on early downs if you think the pass
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: is coming in a known passing down in distance. Oh yeah,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Ted Washington? Another good yeah, Ted Washington, Pat Williams. Stones.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: You need stones that you can drop into the zero,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: drop him on the center and have him not get moved.
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: That's what you need there. And again, it's not just
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: about being huge, right, but it's the play style. It's
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: the skill set, the ability to anchor, the ability to
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: mitigate displacement, the ability to squeeze gaps. Right, if the
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: center moves away, you're now in that a gap. Can
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: you push him down and be in your A and
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: squeeze the other one and be able to kind of
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: steal those gaps at the same time. Can you, you know,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: be able to pop and get your screws into his
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: screws helmet on helmet bang, be in your gap but
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: peeking into the other peeking in your gap but being
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: able to play the other shed. Can you play gap
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: in half all that type of stuff? Or are you
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: truly two gapping or you're just popping the center and
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: you're controlling both a's. Are we lagging the nose and
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: trying to play that way? A lot of questions, But
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: I think the interior defensive line, the defensive tackles as
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: they are now, can be moved enough on the defensive
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: line in Leonard's system, but you're going to need a
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: true nose. I think you are going to need an
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: upgrade at four I or for a four I I
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: should say, to really kind of solidify that spot, maybe
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: even two there. But I think you can make do
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: enough for the time being there and then at edge
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: we talked about it a little bit. I think Landon
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Jackson probably moves into four eye. I was down on
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: land and Jackson as a prospect I don't think, especially
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: with how tight hipped he is, he's not a guy
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: that you ever want really dropping into coverage too much.
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: So for me his I just don't like the body
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: type and the player all that much. So now I
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: think he's kind of caught in between because I don't
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: really want him playing in a two point and playing
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: off the edge. I think he's more suited to play
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: as a four eye. But you do you want him
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to get a little heavier? You know, is he heavy
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: enough for you at two eighty Do you try to
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: beef him up more like they did at Arkansas? Do
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you try to get him to like two two eighty
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: five ish and get him to play a little thicker
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and be a true four I for you, that'll be
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: really interesting to kind of see. Same thing with t J. Sanders.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: Do they want him playing at like a three h
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: five three ten or do they want him getting down
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: to like a two ninety five type of deal? A
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: lot of questions with the body types up front, and
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I think it's all from the front standpoint is where
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: you're going now, because again, now you are playing from
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: what I anticipate they're gonna do. You are gonna play
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: tight front. So you got a four eye, a zero,
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: and a four. What's your zero rotation? Look like you
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: need that true nose. I think Walker can moonlight there,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: but I don't want him there. And then what do
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: you do aside from that? You almost you kind of
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: need a true starting nose and maybe even another one
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: to let Walker moonlight or play off of or still
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: do some four eyes stuff with Walker. Ed is locked
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: into a four eye, Sanders probably four eye as well.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: And then Rousseau. I think Russeau is your standard three
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: four outside linebacker, three four edge. You know, however you
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: want to kind of verbalize it. I think every once
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: in a while maybe you could kick him into a
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: four eye and do some stuff there. But I M
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: going some comments. So, yeah, I'm not a big Duane
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Carter guy. I think Carter would probably be a four eye,
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: but I'm down on not even probably he's not a nose.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: So you're looking at Carter probably as a four eye.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: I'm not a huge fan, but Hoyt's a good fit
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: with what the Rams did with all the hybrid eye
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: stuff up front five down, because that's also where you're
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: gonna look at too, like you're gonna want to look
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: at the Denver Broncos. You're gonna want to look at
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: their five down fronts way Phillips style type of things
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: and what they did there. So your Zach Allen's your
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: John Franklin Myers, is your DJ Jones? Is your Nick
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: Benito's your Jonah Ellis's those type of body types, those
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: type of skill sets up front that you're looking at,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: and just again just comparatively, you know, look at it
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: with the Broncos again, because if you're not like, oh yeah,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I remember the Wisconsin defenses and they're players from twenty
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: seventeen to twenty twenty two, Let's look at the Broncos
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: the past couple of years, right, you know, if you're
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: talking about like an odd front structure, not that it's
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: always tight, but you know, who's your Zach Allen, who's
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: your DJ Jones, who's your John Franklin Myers, who's your
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Nick Benito, who's your Jonathan Cooper, who's your Jonah Ellis,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: who's all ninety six who actually played really well like
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: wizer Riki or whatever his name is. His name always
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: throws me for a loop. Tommy togy I from Houston
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: used to he doesn't anymore now, Yeah, Like looking at
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: those type of guys and you just kind of play
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: that game, like look at these teams who run these
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: odd front structure type of defenses and think like, okay,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: like do we have that guy? Okay, do we have
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: a guy who plays like that guy? Do we have
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: a guy who's similar, you know, similarly built to that
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: guy or from a play style or a skill set standpoint.
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna be breaking all this down in a ton
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: of detail and depth going forward. This is just the
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: kind of wet the whistle for the thought process. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: you know, Jonathan Franklin Myers, you take him, you plug
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: him in as a four eye cool, You're good, Like
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: that's the type of body type you kind of want
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: and not even want need. This is all gonna be
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: broken down in much, much, much more depth going forward.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: There's a lot of possibilities right now in terms of
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: what you can do. But I think again, what what
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: what's good to say is good to think about is
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you already had to add body types there you are
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: not body type. You already needed to add bodies. You
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: needed a couple more defensive ends. You needed a batman
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: to Greg Russou's Robin. You needed another interior defensive lineman
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: to play in a rotation with Walker and Sanders and Oliver.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Even if you like Dwane Carter, you still need another
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: body on the interior. You still needed some bodies at
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: linebacker because Matt Mlona was a UFA. You still needed
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: a safety, right, So you still needed a bunch of
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: work at all these spots that are open for you.
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: Now you just need to look more towards a guy
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: who is more of a fit for Jim Leonard's system
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: and scheme. And again keep in mind with I see
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: the comments here of like Myers is six four to
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: two eighty eight. That's what Leonard wants. That's the size
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: of a four. I at his six poet two eighty five, right.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: But I don't I don't think they're going to get
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: rid of Ed Oliver. I mean maybe, I let me
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: take a look at Ed Oliver's contract, But I don't
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: think Ed Oliver is going to be going anywhere, and
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: he's not going to play as a nose, so you
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: have to look at him yet his dead cap would
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: be crazy. Yeah, So I don't think they're going to
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: move on from Ed Oliver and he's not gonna play
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: as a nose. And I also thing too with it, like, oh,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: got cha, gotcha, got you. You're saying ed will work
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: copy copy, copy, copy, copy copy, very fair. I also
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: but I want to use your comment too, like I
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: like what you're getting at and saying, but I always
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: want to make sure everybody like don't get locked into
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: purely size. It's a lot about skill set and play style. Yes,
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: certain body types, certain sizes tend to gravitate more towards
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: you know, certain play style or skill set. If you
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: want somebody to mitigate displacement and be a stone, you know,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: Vitavea works better than at Oliver for that. And if
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: you want someone to penetrate and get forward and get
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: after the quarterback, at Oliver works better than Vita Vea.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: So there are certain body types that gravitate toward, you know,
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: certain sizes, certain frames that gravitate more towards certain roles
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: or skill sets. And you know, in terms of being
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: stout on the inside or heavier on the inside, but
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: doesn't have to be an absolute hass or monster. The
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: skill set is important, the play style is important. Yeah,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: And I like your comment there about you know, John
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Franklin Myers. I liked him when he was with the
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Jets around a little bit. We're gonna have to kind
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: of address that spot. And again, it's not you're limited
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: with some money. But again I think you could take
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: I think you could get Roy Lopez for like three
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: and a half million, four million dollars and plug him
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: in as your starting nos and you can be fine. Right,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: I like it's those things. So and again, they were
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: going to have to add to the defense anyway this offseason, right,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: whether or not they were switching schemes or systems or structures. Yes,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: if they have the same scheme and structure, it would
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: be easier. But they already had to add bodies to
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: that side of the ball. Now they just have to
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: add different bodies. They just have to add different skill sets.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: They just have to add different play styles to now
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: work with what Jim Leonard is doing, what he wants
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: to do, what he's going to be, his philosophy, his
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: play style, his scheme, his structure, all of those things.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: And Yeah, I'm very excited. I hope you folks are excited.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Kind of go j what's r j R? Says? I
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: think they could get a massive nose tackle and then
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: have Ed Oliver, large human groot on the d line.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: Then you have Hoyt, Dorian, Williams, Terro Bernard, then a
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: pure edge rusher on the other side. They are versatile already,
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: You've got some versatility with them with Hoyt Dorian. I'm
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: interested to see what they do with Dorian kind of
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: where they play him like. It would be great if
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: you could put him as like an inside linebacker, but
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: I don't think he has the coverage sense or awareness
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: or dropping ability yet. And then again, with his length
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: and physicality, you could play him as like a Sam
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: on the edge, but he doesn't have the pass rush
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: chops to win one on one like that. So it'll
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: be interesting. But Joe says, is it realistic to cut
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: or trade tarn Johnson? I checked, and I don't think so.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: But let's see if they were to cut Taron Johnson,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: who actually if they designate him. If it's so, you
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: can only have two post June first designations, I personally
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: was saving that for Curtis Samuel and Dawson Knox. A
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: post June first release for Taron Johnson isn't the end
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: of the world. You save eight point six million this year,
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: you get two point seven dead cap this year, six
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: point seven dead cap next year, So it's still not ideal.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: But if you release him pre June first, nine point
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: five in dead cap, only one point nine in savings
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: from today through March fifteenth. If you release him from
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: March fifteenth to June first, it's worse. It's a ten
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: point six dead cap and only a seven hundred and
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: thirty dollars or seven hundred and thirty thousand dollars savings,
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: not seven hundred and thirty dollars. So it's a little
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: more manageable if you designate them post June first, but
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: it's still messy and muddy, and it still sucks. And
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: I'm keeping those posts June first designations for Knox and
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: Samuel as of right now. So it's tough to get
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: out of the Terran structure. But this is fun. This
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: is a fun conversation they have. Now you got to
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: start looking at different body types, start looking at different
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: skill sets in free agency and in the draft. And
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: I hope you folks enjoyed this episode and you trust
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: me to kind of go forward in this because now
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: we're gonna be diving into a whole world. I'm gonna
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: spend a lot of time on this side of the
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: ball this offseason in terms of guys I think they
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: need to go after that would be good fits and
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: help them in this defense and kind of move forward
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: and go forward. So I hope you enjoyed this episode.
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: Keep banging it here for all this type of content
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: throughout the rest of this offseason. Going to be diving
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: into free agency targets, draft targets in a multitude of
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: forms and fashions. I am really, really, really excited. Oh
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: thank you for the come word. It's appreciate you. I'm
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: really excited for this move. I'm really excited for this

- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I hope you enjoy the rest of you or weekend,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: and coming here from coach Chaps saying not not all
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: three down defenses are the same. There are variations and
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: how teams use Therefore eyes archetype is archtype is more
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: flexible in the odd front with body types. Yes, one
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: good call, and I think that's why I think it's
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: like interesting right with what they could do. It's like, okay,
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: like TJ Sanders, Okay, Landon Jackson, Okay, maybe Gregorusso okay,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: like maybe John Franklin Myers. It'll be interesting to kind
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: of see what they gravitate towards because we're an uncharted
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: territory for this defense with an odd front structure, with
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: this type front, with the way Jim Leonard plays it,
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: We're a bit in some uncharted territory for the defensive
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: line and for the linebackers. There's gonna need to be
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: some churn and some finagling at both of those spots
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: up front or really the whole front in general, linebacker
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: interior and uh the edge spot. Now, but I'm excited
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: for it. I think it's a good positive move. I
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: think it's a good positive churn and a positive finagling
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: that needed to happen and will have. And yeah, I'll
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: be breaking it down here on the show every single week,
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: breaking it down on Twitter, breaking it all down Blue Sky.
