- 0:52is building here in the heart Check community.
- 0:55Hey, you ready? Let's get after it.
- 0:56So John chapter one verse 6 starts like this.
- 0:59God sent a man, John the Baptist, to tell about the light
- 1:03so that everyone might believe because of his testimony, John
- 1:07himself was not the light. He was simply a witness to tell
- 1:11about the light. The one who is the true Light,
- 1:15who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
- 1:19He came into the very world he created, but the world didn't
- 1:22recognize him. He came to his own people and
- 1:26even they rejected him. But to all who believed him and
- 1:30accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
- 1:34They are reborn not with a physical birth resulting from
- 1:39human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
- 1:45I love this passage. So we're going to kind of go
- 1:47back through this. We're going to go verse by verse
- 1:50here. So in verse 6, John the Apostle
- 1:53starts. It was saying that God sent a
- 1:55man, John the Baptist. John the Baptist, if you did not
- 1:59know, is Jesus's cousin. And in the other gospels, you
- 2:03can read about John the Baptist's story.
- 2:06Luke kind of goes a little bit more into detail about John the
- 2:09Baptist's story, and we learn about him being Jesus's earthly
- 2:14cousin from his mother's side, from his human side.
- 2:17And John the Baptist has this call to be the one who's
- 2:21shouting in the wilderness to repent and to believe in Jesus,
- 2:26that he's the one witnessing to people to tell them about
- 2:30Christ's coming, that the Kingdom of God is near and at
- 2:35hand. And so we learned this story of
- 2:38John the Baptist in detail. If you did not know the Gospel
- 2:41of Luke, Luke interviewed Mary the mother of Jesus.
- 2:45So he got kind of this insight from Mary of her experience.
- 2:49And I love and Luke when he describes that when John the
- 2:52Baptist when was in his mother's womb and Jesus was in the womb
- 2:55of Mary, that when they came together, there was a a leaping
- 2:59of joy through the Holy Spirit in the womb.
- 3:01That John the Baptist recognized Jesus in the womb and was
- 3:05excited and was leaping and moving in his mother's tell me,
- 3:09which is incredible, just that even John the Baptist in the
- 3:12womb of his mom recognized him. But as we just read, read the
- 3:17people who were supposed to recognize God in flesh,
- 3:21Emmanuel, God with us, Jesus did not recognize him.
- 3:24So John the Baptist being Jesus's, Jesus's cousin, but
- 3:29more specifically, he had a calling on his life to announce
- 3:33the coming of Jesus Christ, that God had a will for his life that
- 3:37he called John to be the one to let people know to come and put
- 3:43their faith in Jesus. And I love how it goes on to
- 3:45verse 7. It says he was sent to what to
- 3:49tell about the light so that everyone might believe because
- 3:52of his testimony. And when I was praying before
- 3:57this episode and even sitting on that word testimony, I just had
- 4:00a conversation with my amazing son the other day.
- 4:03My son's going to be getting baptized this Sunday, which is
- 4:06incredible. I am shouting to the heavens how
- 4:09excited I am that my son will become my brother in Christ,
- 4:12that he's officially declaring for everyone to know that he has
- 4:15put his faith in Jesus. And now to be baptized and
- 4:18welcomed into the family of God is an incredible thing,
- 4:21something I pray for, for all my children for that day to come.
- 4:24But I was talking with him that day because for our church, we
- 4:26make testimony videos before they're baptized.
- 4:29And so my son was asking me, well, what am I supposed to say,
- 4:32Dad, what does this look like? And I wanted him at first I
- 4:35asked him. I said, well, someone came up to
- 4:37you at school And he goes, oh, they do already.
- 4:39I said someone comes up to school and says, why do you
- 4:42believe in Jesus? What would be your answer?
- 4:44And you know, first he responded with well, because he died for
- 4:48my sins that and I said, well, yeah, of course I said that that
- 4:51is that is a biblical truth 100%.
- 4:55But I wanted to get a little bit beneath the surface with him.
- 4:57I didn't want him to just repeat what he's been taught.
- 5:00But what does it mean for him to personally know Jesus, to follow
- 5:05Jesus? What's his testimony?
- 5:08And when we read this, a biblical definition of testimony
- 5:13is a is a declaration or a witness to the truth, character,
- 5:16and saving power of God. It is a personal faith story.
- 5:20And the New Testament, the Greek word martyria, translates to
- 5:25witness or testimony. It represents an eyewitness
- 5:28account of God's miraculous intervention, forgiveness, and
- 5:32transforming power in a believer's life.
- 5:35So when I asked my son, what is your testimony?
- 5:38What's your personal walk with Jesus?
- 5:41What does it mean for you as to why you believe in him?
- 5:44You're putting your faith in him that you're going to declare to
- 5:46the church and world that I'm an unashamed follower of Jesus.
- 5:50And his answer was incredible. I'm excited for what he shared
- 5:53to be shared in Sunday morning. But again, John, this was
- 5:58personal to John. He knew Jesus and he knew who
- 6:02Jesus was. And so now he's proclaiming,
- 6:05he's telling everyone about the light that's come to earth and
- 6:08he is hoping that they might believe because of his
- 6:12testimony. He's saying this is the Messiah,
- 6:15this is the light of the world. This is the one we were promised
- 6:18long ago in the Old Testaments that the prophets prophesied
- 6:22about. He is here, and I know this
- 6:25because I know him. And I want to encourage you
- 6:29today, if you've put your faith in Jesus, that you're a follower
- 6:31of Christ, your testimony only matters that you can share with
- 6:36people your personal relationship with the, the God
- 6:40of the universe, who you know, who lives inside of you, that
- 6:44you can tell people. Again, I want to encourage you
- 6:46if you feel like, well, I haven't studied the Bible
- 6:48enough. I went to Bible school.
- 6:49I don't have a Bible theology. I I need to learn more, listen,
- 6:53be discipled, learn more about Jesus, get in the word, feast on
- 6:57his word, grow in your knowledge and understanding that is
- 7:00biblical. That is a good thing.
- 7:03But if you are a believer that just became a believer today,
- 7:07guess what? You can tell others about Jesus.
- 7:10Guess what? It's the power of God within you
- 7:12who works through. It's the Holy Spirit who reaches
- 7:15people, who changes their hearts.
- 7:17You get to just witness to them through your testimony.
- 7:21What has Jesus done in your life that's made you put your faith
- 7:25in Jesus? How has He transformed your
- 7:28soul? How has he taken you from who
- 7:30you were to who you are now? What is it about Jesus that
- 7:34you've encountered that you've learned about, that he's
- 7:36impacted you on in your walk with Him?
- 7:39Tell people about that. The power of your testimony is a
- 7:43powerful thing that others can hear your personal faith story
- 7:47and say man, this God must be real and I want to know who he
- 7:51is. So tell anybody, tell everybody,
- 7:54be a witness for Christ just like John the Baptist was.
- 7:58And in verse 8 it goes on to say John himself was not the light.
- 8:01He was simply a witness to tell about the light.
- 8:05John was not the light, John the Apostle who wrote this gospel.
- 8:09John wanted to make sure to remind us, 'cause John the
- 8:12Baptist would have wanted us to be reminded of this, that he was
- 8:15not the Messiah, That there was kind of this, you see in the
- 8:18Gospels, people asking or saying, oh, Jesus, is this John
- 8:22the Baptist is this prophet that we were promised to come.
- 8:25And John the Baptist like, whoa, no, no, no, no, I am not.
- 8:28I am not him that as John will say later, I'm not even worthy
- 8:32to tie the the his sandals. I'm not even worthy to tie
- 8:36Jesus's sandals. He is the Messiah.
- 8:39He's the one who's promised long ago.
- 8:40He is the light of the world. He is the Son of God.
- 8:43It is him. And so this reminder in verse 8
- 8:45that John himself was not the light.
- 8:47He was simply just a witness to tell about the light.
- 8:50I'm not Jesus, I'm a follower of Jesus and I will witness and
- 8:54tell my testimony about him, but I am not him.
- 8:59He lives in me and I want to tell others about him.
- 9:01And just again, we're being reminded that John himself was
- 9:04not the light, but he was witnessing to tell others about
- 9:07the light of the world, who was Jesus Christ.
- 9:09And verse nine goes on to say the one who is the true light,
- 9:13who gives light to everyone was coming into the world.
- 9:17Wow. And I was sitting on this, I
- 9:21don't know about you, but when I read that verse 9, the one who
- 9:23was the true light, who gives light to everyone was coming
- 9:27into the world. That might make you pause for a
- 9:30second and say, so Jesus came and maybe someone could twist
- 9:34the Scripture and say, see, he was the true light and he gives
- 9:37light to everyone. So everyone is saved.
- 9:39Everyone, everyone's going to be in heaven, see, because Jesus
- 9:42gives light to everyone. Let me break this down a little
- 9:45bit. This isn't saying that everybody
- 9:48saved because Jesus is light is given to everyone.
- 9:51What this really is saying, and if you haven't heard this
- 9:54theological term before, you maybe heard the word grace.
- 9:58But a theological term we use is called common grace.
- 10:01And common grace is the theological concept referring to
- 10:05the unearned universal favor of God bestowed upon all humankind
- 10:11regardless of their faith or moral standing.
- 10:13So basically everybody who's alive right now gets their
- 10:18unearned universal favor of God over them, that they are
- 10:24experiencing God's goodness and his light and his joy and, and
- 10:29his creation. When you go and you walk past
- 10:32that beautiful waterfall, when you look up in the beautiful
- 10:34sky, when that beautiful day with the rainbow showing and,
- 10:39and the raindrops coming down, when you see and even experience
- 10:43creation, you are experienced. The God who created everything
- 10:48that his goodness, his light, his favor is over everybody.
- 10:54That when you are alive, you are still connected to God, that
- 10:58you're still connected to him, that you're experiencing him
- 11:01even through creation. As Romans, one says to us that
- 11:04there is no excuse to not have faith in the One who created us
- 11:08in everything. Because you're experiencing them
- 11:10through that love of your relationship, that love of your
- 11:13spouse. The love of when you look at
- 11:15your child, the joy you get when you see them.
- 11:18The joy you get when you hear your child laugh.
- 11:20The the joy you get when you look up into the sky and see a
- 11:23beautiful rainbow that formed when the rain stops coming.
- 11:27That is you experiencing God's favor, the unearned goodness of
- 11:32God that He gives you. It's His common grace over all
- 11:35of this fallen world. No matter if you believe in Him
- 11:38or not, Guess what? You're still experiencing Him
- 11:43because the things you enjoy, the things that are good comes
- 11:45from Him because all good blessings come from above.
- 11:49And so we have this common grace.
- 11:51There's a verse that touches on this.
- 11:53So as Jesus gives light to everyone, Matthew 544 says this,
- 11:57and Jesus says this, but I say, love your enemies.
- 12:00Pray for those who persecute you.
- 12:02In verse 45, He goes on to say in that in that way you will be
- 12:07acting as true children of your Father in heaven.
- 12:10What is it goes on to say in the passage we just read in John
- 12:13that we are now deemed children of God after we put our faith in
- 12:17Jesus. But he's saying Jesus in Matthew
- 12:20545 that you will be acting like children of God.
- 12:24You will be looking like him because he gives sunlight to
- 12:29both the evil and the good and he sends rain on the just and
- 12:35the unjust alike. So Jesus is saying you love your
- 12:39enemies, you pray for those who persecute you, because again,
- 12:43verse 46, if you love only those who love you, what reward is
- 12:47there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors,
- 12:50even people who don't believe in God, people who are wicked, who
- 12:53are evil, they do that much. People who don't know Jesus,
- 12:57people who are, who are wicked people, people who don't know
- 13:00God, they love the people who love them back.
- 13:02That's easy. But us who are children of God,
- 13:06we love our enemies. We pray for those who persecute
- 13:08us because in that same way we're reflecting the Father to
- 13:12this world because he gives sunlight to both evil and good.
- 13:16He brings rain on the just and the unjust.
- 13:20He shows common grace to anyone and everyone.
- 13:24If you are alive and you're walking on this earth and you're
- 13:26experiencing good things, that's from God.
- 13:30He's the one who created you, man.
- 13:32How much, how good of a God He is that He brings goodness to
- 13:38all. Even the people who reject him,
- 13:40who spit upon him, who mock him, He still reigns on them.
- 13:43He still gives them. He still gives them good things
- 13:46because He's a good father. That's who He is.
- 13:48It's in his character. But again, I say this to follow
- 13:52that up. So while you're alive, you can
- 13:54experience His common grace, but if you do not put your faith in
- 13:58Jesus before you die, you will be separated from Him forever.
- 14:03That is hell for eternity, unending flames, unending
- 14:09separation from God. Everything that was good,
- 14:12everything that brought you peace and joy and love in this
- 14:16world, that was from the Father, you will be separated from
- 14:19forever. That is hell.
- 14:21That is torture. And so here and right now, if
- 14:25you're listening to this and you have not put your faith in
- 14:28Jesus, my prayer is that you do because the God who created you
- 14:32and loves you and has purpose for you, He's already showing
- 14:35you His common grace even in your day-to-day.
- 14:36The breath in your lungs that you're breathing is from Him.
- 14:40He is good and He loves you. And I pray that you put your
- 14:43faith in Jesus so you can have a relationship, a saving
- 14:46relationship that gives you eternal life that can be found
- 14:50in Jesus. And so John 1, getting back to
- 14:54it goes on to say in verse 10, he, Jesus came into the very
- 14:59world he created, but the world didn't recognize him.
- 15:03And verse 11, he came to his own people and even they rejected
- 15:08him. So Jesus comes, comes home,
- 15:11comes to the place he created. And Jesus literally came into
- 15:16the very world that he created, but the world didn't even
- 15:19recognize him. That people, this verse, excuse
- 15:25me, verse 10 is speaking towards non Jewish people that he came
- 15:30into this world, He created everybody and everything, but
- 15:33they didn't recognize him. Nobody knew who he was.
- 15:36They didn't know Jesus. But then it goes on to even
- 15:39saying verse 11, he came to his own people.
- 15:43So now we're talking about the Israelites, the Jewish people,
- 15:46God's chosen people, even they rejected him.
- 15:51So now even his own people, God's chosen people, they, they
- 15:56reject Jesus that they don't believe he is who he is.
- 16:00The Messiah that was promised long ago for them that was going
- 16:03to come and was going to save them.
- 16:07Because again, they had an expectation of what the Messiah
- 16:10was going to do and who he was going to be.
- 16:12And Jesus turns the world upside down that we're going to learn
- 16:15more about throughout this gospel story.
- 16:18But then it goes on to say in verse 12, But to all who
- 16:22believed him and accepted him, here it goes.
- 16:26He gave the right to become children of God.
- 16:30And I want to sit there real quick.
- 16:32I've said this, I actually said this in a sermon a few weeks
- 16:34ago. I was preaching.
- 16:36Sometimes we will throw that out there.
- 16:38I've seen this in Christian world or even just I've seen it
- 16:40in videos that people will look at people when they're, when
- 16:44they're witnessing to people trying to reach them for Christ.
- 16:46They'll say, you know, you're a child of God.
- 16:48God created you. And I'm like, I, I, I know their
- 16:51heart behind it. Everyone is created in God's
- 16:56image. Genesis 1, everyone was created
- 16:59in God's image. So everyone's an image bearer of
- 17:01God, which is incredible. Again, even if you don't even
- 17:04believe in Jesus, you bear His image 'cause He created you in
- 17:09His image. But not everybody is a child of
- 17:13God. Listen to these words again in
- 17:14verse 12. But to all who believed him and
- 17:19accepted him or received him, He gave the right to become
- 17:24children of God. You are not a child of God if
- 17:27you have not put your faith in Jesus.
- 17:29That the family of God consists of those who have put their
- 17:34faith in Jesus, that believe in Jesus, that have received Jesus,
- 17:39that declare him with their mouths that He is Lord of their
- 17:42lives, that they believe in their heart, that God raised him
- 17:45from the dead. Those are children of God.
- 17:48That you are not a child of God if you have not put your faith
- 17:50in Jesus. You were made in His image, but
- 17:54you are not in the family of God.
- 17:56You are not, again, have His light that saves you, but His
- 18:01light does fall over you because of His common grace.
- 18:05But you are not given that identity.
- 18:08You are not in the family of God if you have not put your faith
- 18:11in Jesus. So that was more so for my
- 18:13brothers and sisters in Christ. Just to be careful sometimes
- 18:16when we're teaching and preaching things, I know the
- 18:18heart posture is to love people and to reach them for Christ.
- 18:21So I encourage that. I cheer that on always, 'cause
- 18:24that's what we're here for, is to be disciples of Jesus and be
- 18:26disciple makers. But nobody who's not put their
- 18:32faith in Jesus is a child of God, only those who have put
- 18:35their faith in Christ. And in verse 13, we'll wrap it
- 18:38up with this. John says they are reborn not
- 18:43with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan,
- 18:47plan, but a birth that comes from God.
- 18:51That when you become a child of God that you are reborn
- 18:55spiritually, not with a physical birth, not in the way that we
- 18:59see somebody born into this world through a mother and
- 19:03father who loves each other. The birds and bees conversation
- 19:06that that I that we have with our children.
- 19:09But this is reborn spiritually by the Holy Spirit as Jesus will
- 19:15have this conversation with Nicodemus that you must be born
- 19:19of spirit, that you must be reborn.
- 19:21And people don't understand what that means, that it sounds
- 19:25foolish. But we talked about this last
- 19:28week in in our passage that we read through that everybody has
- 19:32physical life, that if you're breathing right now, that is
- 19:34God's common grace over your life, that you have breath in
- 19:37your lungs. But to be spiritually alive, to
- 19:42be spiritually reborn, the only way that eternal life comes is
- 19:46through faith in Jesus, that you are now a child of God, that
- 19:50you're welcomed into the family of God because of your belief
- 19:53and your receiving of his Son, Jesus Christ.
- 19:58And so my prayer is that you are reborn today, that you put your
- 20:01faith in Jesus, that you believe he came and lived a perfect
- 20:04life, that he died a death that you and I deserve for our sins,
- 20:08and then three days later rose from the grave.
- 20:10And now anyone who puts their faith in Him will receive
- 20:12eternal life because of Christ and what He accomplished on the
- 20:16cross for you and me. And you will be reborn
- 20:19spiritually, that you will receive a new life, that the old
- 20:24you is dead and gone and a new creation and Christ will come
- 20:27alive and will be inside of you, changing you, molding you,
- 20:31transforming you more into the likeness of Christ.
- 20:35I love you guys so much. I hope this episode blessed you.
- 20:37Share it with someone who wants to even learn more about God's
- 20:40Word, wants to walk with you, walk with someone else through
- 20:42these episodes. I thank you guys so much for
- 20:45your encouragement and for continuing to go along this
- 20:47journey with me. I pray that God's favor and
- 20:50blessing is over you. I pray that you continue to
- 20:52trust Him and walk with him. I pray that you continue to put
- 20:55Him first, to give Him all the glory, to honor Him with all
- 20:58your life, that you trust him, that you don't just say you
- 21:02believe, but you follow Him every day that your faith
- 21:05transforms into action for the Kingdom.
- 21:10Be a witness for Christ today. Let me pray.
- 21:13Lord Jesus, we love you and God, we thank you for who you are.
- 21:16Continue to lead us, continue to guide us, continue to be the
- 21:19focus of our lives and continue to fill us with your spirit so
- 21:22we can be a witness for you. That we can tell people our
- 21:25personal faith stories to tell of our testimony so others come
- 21:29to have faith in you as well. We love you and we pray all this
- 21:31in Jesus name, Amen.
