- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. But Daniel purposed in his heart that
- 0:05Speaker 1: he would not defile himself with a portion of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank. Therefore
- 0:12Speaker 1: he requested the prince of the eunuchs that he might
- 0:14Speaker 1: not defile himself. Daniel 1.8 Lord, because my purpose means
- 0:21Speaker 1: more to me than my comfort, I will be mindful
- 0:24Speaker 1: to treat my body in a way that will allow
- 0:27Speaker 1: me to carry out my mission while here on earth. Today,
- 0:33Speaker 1: like Daniel and the young men, I am making a
- 0:36Speaker 1: conscious decision to honor my body by not defiling it
- 0:40Speaker 1: with food or substances that would stop me from experiencing
- 0:44Speaker 1: the fullness of all you have in store for me.
- 0:49Speaker 1: I thank you, Lord, for the will and the fortitude
- 0:52Speaker 1: to stand strong when I'm tempted to choose the comfort
- 0:55Speaker 1: of laziness and poor health habits. I declare that health
- 1:01Speaker 1: is a top priority. I declare that through my decision
- 1:06Speaker 1: to live a healthy lifestyle, my mind will be sharper
- 1:10Speaker 1: and more creative than ever before. I praise you and
- 1:15Speaker 1: thank you in advance for uncommon outcomes and alliances that
- 1:20Speaker 1: are working on my behalf to help realize the dreams
- 1:23Speaker 1: and destiny you've placed on and in me. No matter what,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I will not be ashamed of my acceleration. because I've
- 1:32Speaker 1: made the decision to honor my body, which is the
- 1:36Speaker 1: vehicle needed to take me to my future. In Jesus' name.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Amen.

- 2:42Speaker 4: Daniel and the Kingsmen In our last story, we were
- 2:46Speaker 4: taken up in the Spirit of the Lord with Ezekiel
- 2:49Speaker 4: as he scanned a vast valley of dry bones. As
- 2:52Speaker 4: the Spirit of God rushed into the valley, the bones
- 2:55Speaker 4: came to life and were restored. This was an image
- 2:59Speaker 4: of God's plan to restore Israel and pour out His Spirit.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Now we look into the life of Daniel. He, along
- 3:07Speaker 4: with the rest of God's people, was taken captive by Babylon.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Daniel is brought into the fold of King Nebuchadnezzar to
- 3:15Speaker 4: study and serve. Slowly, Daniel begins to influence the wicked
- 3:20Speaker 4: king and his men, inspired by the book of Daniel.
- 3:27Speaker 2: This is Jack Graham with today's episode of the Bible
- 3:30Speaker 2: in a Year. I'm so glad that you've joined us
- 3:32Speaker 2: once again. In our previous reading, we heard how God
- 3:36Speaker 2: spoke to Ezekiel, taking him up in the Spirit and
- 3:39Speaker 2: giving him a vision of dry bones that were brought
- 3:41Speaker 2: back to life by the power of God's Word and
- 3:44Speaker 2: His Spirit. It was a message to Israel that God
- 3:48Speaker 2: would restore them to life and make one nation of
- 3:50Speaker 2: the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah. And ultimately, it
- 3:54Speaker 2: is a promise, a greater promise, of one who would come,
- 3:57Speaker 2: the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would not just give life
- 4:01Speaker 2: to Israel, but offer life to the whole world. Today
- 4:05Speaker 2: we'll hear a reading about a young exile named Daniel. He,
- 4:08Speaker 2: along with a few of his faithful Israelite captives, is
- 4:12Speaker 2: chosen to serve the Babylonian king. God is placing this
- 4:16Speaker 2: young man, a godly follower of the Lord, into a
- 4:19Speaker 2: place where he can influence evil men for the glory
- 4:22Speaker 2: of God. So, let's hear God's word today.
- 4:27Speaker 4: The kingdoms of Israel and Judah fell to the mighty
- 4:30Speaker 4: hand of King Nebuchadnezzar. Hooks were sewn into their lips,
- 4:34Speaker 4: and they were carted off to their captivity in Babylon.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Along with the people, King Nebuchadnezzar took the vessels in
- 4:41Speaker 4: the temple and placed them in his own treasury with
- 4:44Speaker 4: his gods. King Nebuchadnezzar was determined to graft Israel into
- 4:48Speaker 4: Babylonian culture. He would do so first by taking their temple.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Then he would take the best of them, the brightest
- 4:56Speaker 4: and most educated, to serve him. Nebuchadnezzar gathered young men, strong, good-looking, skilled,
- 5:03Speaker 4: and wise. He gave them access to his libraries and
- 5:07Speaker 4: the finest tutors Babylon could provide. He taught them foreign
- 5:11Speaker 4: languages and exposed them to different cultures, music, and art.
- 5:16Speaker 4: It was Nebuchadnezzar's intention to indoctrinate these young men to
- 5:19Speaker 4: become leaders over the captives and loyalty to Babylon. The
- 5:23Speaker 4: king provided a daily portion of food and wine for them.
- 5:27Speaker 4: It was his desire to educate them for three years.
- 5:30Speaker 4: And at the end of their time, they would stand
- 5:33Speaker 4: in front of the king. Among these young men were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael,
- 5:38Speaker 4: and Azariah from the tribe of Judah. Their names were
- 5:42Speaker 4: taken from them, and Nebuchadnezzar called them Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach,
- 5:49Speaker 4: and Abednego. Although Nebuchadnezzar took their names, he could not
- 5:54Speaker 4: take their true identities. Daniel watched closely as the king
- 5:58Speaker 4: and some of the young men feasted on the king's food.
- 6:02Speaker 4: It was not only sacrificed to idols, but it was dirty.
- 6:06Speaker 4: The grease dripped from the Babylonians' chin. He saw many
- 6:10Speaker 4: of the Babylonian nobles. They were overweight and bloated. Daniel
- 6:14Speaker 4: purposed in his heart to not defile himself. He would
- 6:18Speaker 4: not eat the king's food. The chief servant was concerned
- 6:22Speaker 4: for Daniel and thought that his health and favor would
- 6:24Speaker 4: decline if he did not eat. But Daniel had a
- 6:27Speaker 4: challenge for him and the king.' Test your servants and I,'
- 6:31Speaker 4: Daniel challenged.' For ten days my friends and I will
- 6:35Speaker 4: consume nothing but vegetables and water.' At the end of
- 6:38Speaker 4: those ten days, measure who is in better health.'' So
- 6:41Speaker 4: for ten days Daniel and his companions ate vegetables and
- 6:44Speaker 4: drank water,' while the other young men ate the food
- 6:47Speaker 4: sacrificed to idols.' When the ten days passed, Daniel and
- 6:51Speaker 4: his friends were far more healthy' and clear in mind
- 6:54Speaker 4: than the others.' So the chief servant ordered for all
- 6:57Speaker 4: the men in the palace to be given vegetables and water.
- 7:02Speaker 4: This was but one example of how Daniel and his
- 7:04Speaker 4: friends began to transform the Babylonian culture. They increased in knowledge, wisdom,
- 7:10Speaker 4: and favor with God. They had visions and dreams and
- 7:13Speaker 4: began to transform the hearts of those around them. Nebuchadnezzar
- 7:17Speaker 4: brought them into his presence as counselors and wise men.
- 7:21Speaker 4: In every matter, he found them ten times more insightful
- 7:24Speaker 4: than the Babylonian scholars, magicians, and enchanters.
- 7:32Speaker 2: In today's reading, we're reminded of the brutality of the Babylonians.
- 7:36Speaker 2: When they conquered Israel and Judah, they didn't just take
- 7:39Speaker 2: captives away in chains. Many of the captives were tortured
- 7:43Speaker 2: with hooks sewn into their lips, and as an act
- 7:46Speaker 2: of humiliation, this was meant to crush the spirit of
- 7:49Speaker 2: their vanquished foes. They also carted off precious items from
- 7:54Speaker 2: the temple, signaling that their gods were superior to those
- 7:57Speaker 2: of their enemies. They did not know or fear the
- 8:01Speaker 2: one true God. But among the captives, there were some
- 8:04Speaker 2: young men who would begin to change that and challenge that,
- 8:08Speaker 2: showing Nebuchadnezzar and his court who Yahweh is. Though they
- 8:13Speaker 2: were cruel and ruthless, the Babylonians were wise in how
- 8:17Speaker 2: they handled the people they conquered. Understanding that the best
- 8:21Speaker 2: and the brightest in Israel could prove to be a
- 8:23Speaker 2: benefit to Babylon, they selected the cream of the crop
- 8:26Speaker 2: and worked to assimilate them into Babylonian culture. Among those
- 8:31Speaker 2: chosen were Daniel and three of his friends. Rather than
- 8:35Speaker 2: suffer as slaves, Nebuchadnezzar gave these best and brightest access
- 8:40Speaker 2: to the riches of his kingdom, both in terms of
- 8:42Speaker 2: education and training and in comfort and the finer foods
- 8:46Speaker 2: and drinks the land had to offer. They were given
- 8:50Speaker 2: new Babylonian names to replace their Jewish ones. This was
- 8:54Speaker 2: meant to wipe away any former identity, to make their
- 8:57Speaker 2: Jewishness disappear as they were seduced by the pagan culture.
- 9:02Speaker 2: The Bible tells us in the New Testament, Romans chapter 12,
- 9:05Speaker 2: that we are not to conform to this world and
- 9:08Speaker 2: the patterns and the activities of this world. Unfortunately, too
- 9:14Speaker 2: many Christians believe often take the path of least resistance.
- 9:18Speaker 2: We don't stand up to the culture that is trying
- 9:20Speaker 2: to conform us. We want to blend into the world,
- 9:24Speaker 2: enjoy the world and what it has to offer. But
- 9:28Speaker 2: we are called to be better than this. We, like
- 9:31Speaker 2: Daniel and his companions, are called to stand apart, even
- 9:35Speaker 2: if we have to stand alone. But as Daniel and
- 9:39Speaker 2: his friends watched others accept the rich foods, including unclean
- 9:42Speaker 2: meat sacrificed to idols, He resolved not to be defiled.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Daniel chose to honor God and refuse what Nebuchadnezzar offered him.
- 9:52Speaker 2: This wasn't just an act of self-denial. It was a
- 9:57Speaker 2: dangerous refusal to abide by the king's command. This act
- 10:03Speaker 2: could have easily been viewed as rebellion and rejection and
- 10:06Speaker 2: cost Daniel and his friends their lives. But God, as always,
- 10:10Speaker 2: is in control, and he has a purpose and a
- 10:13Speaker 2: plan in all of this. Daniel offered the chief of
- 10:16Speaker 2: servants a challenge. He and his friends would eat only
- 10:20Speaker 2: vegetables and drink water, abstaining from the meat and rich
- 10:23Speaker 2: food and wine for just 10 days. If at the
- 10:27Speaker 2: end of that time they were weaker, slower, less mentally
- 10:30Speaker 2: sharp than the others, they would follow the king's diet.
- 10:34Speaker 2: God honored the faithfulness of Daniel. And we read this
- 10:38Speaker 2: in the first chapter of Daniel, verse 17. To these
- 10:43Speaker 2: four young men, God gave knowledge and understanding of all
- 10:46Speaker 2: kinds of literature and learning. and Daniel could understand visions
- 10:50Speaker 2: and dreams of all kinds. After 10 days, it was
- 10:54Speaker 2: apparent that Daniel and his friends were stronger and brighter
- 10:57Speaker 2: than the others. God had big plans for these young men,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and it all began with a simple yet courageous, confident
- 11:06Speaker 2: step of faith. When we choose to live differently, to
- 11:10Speaker 2: dare to be a Daniel, our witness is powerful and persuasive.
- 11:16Speaker 2: It often opens doors for God's glory to be shown
- 11:18Speaker 2: to the world and often gives us opportunities to influence
- 11:22Speaker 2: those around us. When we stand up and stand apart,
- 11:27Speaker 2: we make a difference. We are not to be like
- 11:30Speaker 2: the world, but we are to be different from the world.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And so with this act of faithful defiance to the
- 11:36Speaker 2: pressures of culture, Daniel and his friends were given access
- 11:39Speaker 2: to an inner circle where God could work through them
- 11:42Speaker 2: to reach the hard-hearted of even King Nebuchadnezzar and many others.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Dear God, we are thankful for the courage of Daniel
- 11:52Speaker 2: and the young men who stood with him. Thank you
- 11:55Speaker 2: for the inspiration of their lives, that they purposed in
- 11:57Speaker 2: their hearts not to defile themselves. May we also live
- 12:02Speaker 2: devout lives, lives that are given over to you and
- 12:05Speaker 2: not to the world. May our focus and our faithfulness
- 12:09Speaker 2: be strong and true against all odds. In Jesus' name, amen.
