- 0:00SPEAKER_00: When I hear this gospel,
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I'm always reminded of my priest friend who has lots of first edition books,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: who likes books, collects lots of books.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: So he was in his house and he was,
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: I think he was,
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: sort of it was the evening,
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: maybe he was going to bed and he was looking at all his books and he was like,
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: hi, you know, I think I need bigger bookshops to keep all of my books.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: He was like, oh, no, you know, because he remembered this gospel, Gary.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm doing it.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We all do it to some extent, right?
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: We all want to accumulate things and then build bigger shelves,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: bigger spaces to have more things.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: But it doesn't lead us to happiness.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: And God's in this gospel not even saying that it's wrong to have things.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And that's the interesting part right at the beginning.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: So he's not saying we can't have material things,
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: but he's saying be careful where your heart is.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: If you remember the Beatitudes,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Christ doesn't say blessed are the poor, but he says blessed are the poor in spirit.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And that's the most important thing is that we have a poverty of heart,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: that our heart doesn't become filled with attachment to things,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: with attachment to all these things that we have and we're worrying about them
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: and our heart can get cluttered up with that.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And so it's very important.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: It's very important to be careful about that, to think about the things that we have.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: We've talked about it before.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: They're all given to us on trust.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: We don't actually own anything.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: We're stewards.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: We've been entrusted with things from God.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: They didn't come from us.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: We didn't make them.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And we're going to have to hand them back.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: We're going to have to make an account for them.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: We're going to have to say what we did with them.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: We're going to be in the situation of this man in this gospel sooner or later.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And then God's going to ask us, you know, what did you do with that?
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: What was all of that for?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Why were you putting all of your effort and attention into that?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Why were you spending so much time thinking about that?
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: What did it really matter from the perspective of eternity?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: You can't take it with you.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: So it's something that we all have to think about because it doesn't matter
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: whether you have a lot or a little.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: You can be very attached to the very few things that you have.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And you can have many things and not be attached to them at all.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It's an invitation for us to examine our hearts and to cultivate an attitude
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: of trust in God and an attitude of entrusting all that we have to God.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Saying, God, you know, it's all yours.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: I'm going to use it the best I can.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And then when it's time, I'm going to give it back to you with complete freedom.
