- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Today we're continuing our Clear the Clutter series.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: The last couple of days we've talked about cleaning up your digital life, specifically computer files and unanswered emails.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Now I want to help you clear even more digital and mental clutter by letting go of subscriptions to podcasts and email newsletter subscriptions that are not helping you.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Now, this might seem kind of ironic now that I think about it, given that you're consuming this content right now either in the form of a podcast episode or a blog post or an email newsletter.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Now, obviously you find this content helpful or you wouldn't be here.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: So I'm not saying unsubscribe to everything, just the stuff that you're not actually going to use.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So, what about all those podcasts and email subscriptions that are clogging up your podcast player and inbox?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: You know, these are the ones that you might get to someday, but in reality, you probably won't.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: And the answer is if they're not helping you, you should really let go of those.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Now, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity we have today as content creators, because anybody with a computer and internet connection can be a writer or an author or a podcaster.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But the flip side of that means that there's far more content being produced than we can ever possibly consume, probably in a hundred lifetimes.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So rather than trying to consume more and more, rather than trying to catch up with all the stuff being produced, I want you to actually do the opposite.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I want you to only consume things that you find really compelling or interesting or things that are helping you grow where you are right now.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So here's a simple way to decide what you should keep as far as email, newsletter subscriptions, and podcast subscriptions.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: I just call this the six-week test.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: And here's how this works.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: If you have read or listened to something in the last six weeks, or if you plan on reading or listening to it in the next six weeks, then you should keep it.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, I think you should probably unsubscribe from it.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: So as I was writing this podcast episode, I went through my podcast app and I unsubscribed from 15 podcasts using this method.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So that was about probably about 40% of the podcasts that I was subscribed to.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And it was actually really refreshing because it was like, oh, these are great shows, they're interesting, but I'm not really using these right now.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: So I just unsubscribe from those and I can subscribe it sometime in the future if I want to.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And now, whenever I'm trying to decide what podcast to listen to, I feel less stressed because I have less to choose from.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Now, you might ask, what if there's something good in those emails or podcasts that I will miss if I unsubscribe to that podcast or from that email list?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Now that's a really good question.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And here's my response.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I believe if something is important and it's meant to be in your life, it will come around again at just the right time that you need it.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Plus, since it's something that's digital by definition, it's always going to be there to consume anyway.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: You can always access it in the future if you need.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: The reality is that your time is limited.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: You only have so much bandwidth in your life for email newsletters and podcasts.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Let go of the ones that you're not using so you can focus on the ones that are truly valuable for you right now in your business and in your writing.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Look through your inbox and your podcasts that you're subscribed to, and then delete the subscriptions that you're not using.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Don't overthink this.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: It needs to be a clear yes, not a maybe or a no.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: So for you to keep it, it needs to be a really enthusiastic yes.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it's just going to continue taking up space in your computer and in your life.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Hey, before I go, I want to let you know that today's episode is sponsored by the Daily Writer Club.
