- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for August 14th.
- 0:13Today is World Lizard Day. And before you think this is
- 0:16just another quirky animal holiday, hear me out because
- 0:20lizards are actually some of nature's most remarkable
- 0:24survivors and have a lot to teach us about resilience and
- 0:28adaptation. World Lizard Day celebrates
- 0:32these fascinating reptiles that have been around for over 200
- 0:36million years. From the tiny nano chameleon
- 0:40that's barely half an inch long to the massive Komodo dragon
- 0:44that can grow over 10 feet, lizards have mastered the art of
- 0:49surviving in almost every environment on Earth.
- 0:52Deserts, rainforests, mountains, even urban areas.
- 0:57What makes lizards truly extraordinary is that their
- 0:59ability to adapt. Some can change colors to blend
- 1:03in with their surroundings. Others can detach their tails
- 1:07when threatened and just throw them back.
- 1:11Many can go weeks without food or water.
- 1:15And some, like geckos, can literally walk on walls and
- 1:18ceilings thanks to millions of tiny hairs on their feet that
- 1:22use molecular forces to stick to the surfaces.
- 1:29Molecular forces? Geckos have the force?
- 1:35No way. But perhaps the most impressive
- 1:40is how lizards have learned to thrive and not just survive.
- 1:44They've turned what could be seen as limitations into
- 1:47superpowers. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:51from Maya Angelou, who understood resilience better
- 1:55than most. She once said you may not
- 1:58control all the events that happened to you, but you can
- 2:02decide not to be reduced by them.
- 2:07Maya Angelou's words capture the essence of what makes lizards
- 2:11such remarkable survivors. They can't control when a
- 2:14predator attacks, when their habitat changes, or when food
- 2:19becomes scarce, but they never let these circumstances reduce
- 2:23them. Instead, they find ways to
- 2:27transform challenges into opportunities for growth.
- 2:30When a lizard loses its tail to escape danger, it doesn't spend
- 2:35time lamenting on what's lost. It immediately begins the
- 2:39process of regenerating a new one, which is often stronger
- 2:44than before. When temperatures drop, lizards
- 2:47don't complain about the cold. They adjust their behavior,
- 2:51finding warm rocks to bask on or hibernate until conditions
- 2:55improve. There's something profoundly
- 2:58human about Angelo's insight when we apply it to the lizard
- 3:02way of life. We all face events we can't
- 3:05control, job changes, relationship challenges, health
- 3:09issues, unexpected setbacks. The question isn't whether these
- 3:13things will happen, but whether we'll let them reduce us, or
- 3:17whether we'll find ways to adapt and grow stronger.
- 3:24Maybe I should be more like a lizard.
- 3:27Lizards have mastered the art of not being reduced by
- 3:30circumstance. They've turned vulnerability
- 3:33into strength, limitations into innovations.
- 3:36A gecko's ability to lose its tail is in the weakness.
- 3:40It's a survival strategy. Their cold blooded nature isn't
- 3:44a disadvantage, it's an energy efficient way to thrive in
- 3:48diverse climates. Maybe the secret isn't avoiding
- 3:52life's challenges, but learning to regenerate, adapt and emerge
- 3:57from difficulties. Not diminished, but transformed.
- 4:02I remember watching a gecko in Mexico 1 evening, effortlessly
- 4:06climbing up a wall and onto the ceiling.
- 4:09What struck me wasn't just the physics defying feat, but how
- 4:13casual it was about the whole thing.
- 4:16No drama, no struggle, just smooth, confident adaptation to
- 4:19what most creatures would see as an impossible surface to climb.
- 4:23And at the time I thought they had little suction cups on their
- 4:26toes, not hairs with molecular forces.
- 4:31So today, in honor of World Lizard Day, consider channeling
- 4:34your inner reptile like lizards. We're more resilient and
- 4:39adaptable than we think. We just need to stop fighting
- 4:43change and start flowing with it.
- 4:47And actually I just remembered a few weeks ago, one of my
- 4:49daughter's, let's call her Boker, Lily Boker.
- 4:55She said that I have featured a lot of Maya Angelou quotes and I
- 5:01just looked it up and in the last 592 daily quote episodes,
- 5:08I've featured Maya Angelou 10 times so far.
- 5:13Wow. Maybe I should just ease up on
- 5:17Maya for a bit. That's going to do it.
- 5:20For today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 5:22for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:26Same pod time, same pod station with another.
