- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Brian Medore.
- 0:07Speaker 1: NAEP has achieved what it's calling a historic victory at
- 0:10Speaker 1: the NL Labor Relations Board. It protects the rights of
- 0:14Speaker 1: casual workers. The union says that for years the board
- 0:17Speaker 1: excluded casual employees from collective bargaining, stating that casuals lack
- 0:23Speaker 1: a substantial connection to the workplace. NAEP recently filed an
- 0:27Speaker 1: application to certify a unit of casual employees at Stella's Circle,
- 0:31Speaker 1: and during a hearing on the matter, its lawyers argued
- 0:34Speaker 1: that denying access violated workers' constitutional rights and the spirit
- 0:39Speaker 1: and intent of the Labor Relations Act. According to the union,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the board agreed with it, saying that a worker is
- 0:46Speaker 1: no less of an employee because they have an irregular schedule.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Stats Canada says the economy lost 42,000 jobs in August. However,
- 0:56Speaker 1: the unemployment rate nationally is unchanged at 6.4%. The unemployment
- 1:02Speaker 1: rate in Newfoundland and Labrador dropped significantly. It was 8.6%
- 1:07Speaker 1: in August. That's down from 9.3% in July. A 35-year-old
- 1:13Speaker 1: man has been charged after a woman was assaulted in
- 1:16Speaker 1: Portugal Co.
- 1:17Speaker 2: St.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Philip's. Police got the report early Thursday morning and found
- 1:21Speaker 1: the woman with injuries inside a home in the town.
- 1:25Speaker 1: RNC learned that the suspect had followed the woman home
- 1:28Speaker 1: and threatened her with a weapon. He left, but police
- 1:31Speaker 1: say he returned a short time later and forced his
- 1:34Speaker 1: way into the residence. The man had fled before police arrived.
- 1:39Speaker 1: The accused was located later that day and arrested for
- 1:42Speaker 1: break and enter, assault causing bodily harm, criminal harassment, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: violence against an intimate partner. He was held in custody
- 1:50Speaker 1: pending a court appearance. Two people were arrested for being
- 1:55Speaker 1: in violation of their court-imposed release conditions after police were
- 1:59Speaker 1: called to a business in Badger to have the pair removed.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Grand Falls-Windsor RCMP recalled yesterday about two people described as
- 2:07Speaker 1: unwanted and intoxicated in the business. Officers determined that the
- 2:12Speaker 1: man and the woman were subject to court-imposed conditions that
- 2:16Speaker 1: barred them from having contact with each other. 38-year-old Misty
- 2:21Speaker 1: Burton and 48-year-old Bradley Blagdon were arrested for failing to
- 2:25Speaker 1: comply with their release orders and held for court. A
- 2:30Speaker 1: unique concert experience coming to the Jag Soundhouse this December
- 2:33Speaker 1: to pay tribute to Fleetwood Mac. Concerts by Candlelight, a
- 2:37Speaker 1: group out of the west of London. They'll be performing
- 2:41Speaker 1: Fleetwood Mac's music, JAG producer Sean Basha.
- 2:45Speaker 2: The whole room is lit by candles. So it's like,
- 2:48Speaker 2: it's a kind of cool atmosphere, you know, you're, it's,
- 2:52Speaker 2: you know, very candles, sexy, warm. And they're doing a
- 2:56Speaker 2: Fleetwood Mac show, yeah, and they're direct from London, so.
- 3:01Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Brian Medore.
