- 3:52Speaker 2: Here's the thing. I know that I need the Progressives,
- 3:55Speaker 2: but I'm just I'm not I'm not telling anyone that
- 3:59Speaker 2: I will not say that into the microphone that I
- 4:01Speaker 2: need that I need bifocals. I won't do it. But

- 5:05Speaker 2: in their depth.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Well, we definitely try to keep it, keep it local
- 5:10Speaker 3: and get everything we can into the paper.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Anything else in today's issue that you'd like to throw out.
- 5:16Speaker 3: There, well, we have the flyer from Agway in Montpelier
- 5:24Speaker 3: that's inserted in this week's paper. Then you know, we

- 5:36Speaker 2: Very nice, very nice. I know there's there's always so
- 5:39Speaker 2: much in there. You guys do such a great job.
- 5:42Speaker 2: And for folks that might want to advertise, might want
- 5:46Speaker 2: to put something out there, what's the deadline for that debt?
- 5:49Speaker 3: Well, our deadline is today for next week's paper because
- 5:54Speaker 3: of Thanksgiving. Normally the deadline is Thursdays all right.

- 6:14Speaker 2: twenty five, eighty two and VT dashworld dot com if

- 6:21Speaker 2: and the sizes and all that good stuff. But so
- 6:23Speaker 2: many people twenty to thirty thousand people a week dev
- 6:28Speaker 2: looking at the.
- 6:28Speaker 3: World, that's right, that's right, JD.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Incredible, big hello to Gary, and a happy Thanksgiving to
- 6:35Speaker 2: you guys. By the way, Jeanette Kingsbury is going to
- 6:40Speaker 2: be coming on the air with me on Tuesdays and
- 6:44Speaker 2: or on Mondays rather, and I am so excited to
- 6:48Speaker 2: have her from the Central Vermont Chamber of Commerce to
- 6:53Speaker 2: highlight some of the things going on in the chamber chatter.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But she's always talking about you guys.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yeah, well, and you'll have fun with their interview.
- 7:00Speaker 4: She's always a lot of fun. Yes, she is.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Understatement right there.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. Thank you, Deb, thank you, and happy
- 7:10Speaker 3: Thanksgiving to you too.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Happy Thanksgiving. Deb Phillips and Gary Haass of course, just
- 7:17Speaker 2: two of the big hitters over there at the World Newspaper.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We are celebrating over fifty years now, what is it,
- 7:25Speaker 2: fifty three years something like that. Amazing I have with
- 7:29Speaker 2: me my friend, my guest this morning. He's got his
- 7:34Speaker 2: free Hugs shirt on. I got my free Hugs shirt
- 7:37Speaker 2: on as well. Pat Fish, Good morning, buddy.
- 7:40Speaker 4: How are you amazing? How are you my friend?
- 7:43Speaker 2: Brother? I'm I'm a little saddened that you're not here,
- 7:48Speaker 2: that I'm not able to give you a free hug.
- 7:52Speaker 5: We can we can virtual hug it for right now,
- 7:54Speaker 5: j D. We can virtual hug you, dude.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I haven't seen you in so long.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Your family over at Sweethearts and Heroes has been hitting
- 8:05Speaker 2: it so hard every single Wednesday, relentlessly injecting nothing put
- 8:12Speaker 2: positivity into the airwaves here at the aired out podcast.
- 8:16Speaker 5: And I wish I could say that I've listened to
- 8:20Speaker 5: them live.
- 8:21Speaker 4: I have not listened to a single one of those live.
- 8:23Speaker 5: I've been at a different school every single one of
- 8:26Speaker 5: those days. As we kind of discussed, as you were like, hey,
- 8:28Speaker 5: when you're going to come back on and we're busy,
- 8:31Speaker 5: you know, we're busy. We're going around to different schools
- 8:33Speaker 5: all over the Northeast. And you know, Tom told me
- 8:36Speaker 5: when I first joined the team, he said, look, you know, sadly,
- 8:39Speaker 5: we're in a business of hopelessness, and it's a business
- 8:43Speaker 5: that is, it's out there and it exists and it's
- 8:46Speaker 5: never going to go away. And you know, we can
- 8:48Speaker 5: keep combating it, we can keep battling it, but the
- 8:50Speaker 5: first thing is showing up. So I've been really happy
- 8:53Speaker 5: to see, you know, when I've watched back, whether it's
- 8:56Speaker 5: the full full interviews or the clips of you know,
- 8:59Speaker 5: my friend Brian who's been on here quite a few times,
- 9:02Speaker 5: and Loud and Win and some of the people that
- 9:06Speaker 5: have been you know, stepping in and really doing a
- 9:07Speaker 5: great job on your podcast. And you know, thank you
- 9:10Speaker 5: for for interviewing us and putting our platform out there.
- 9:13Speaker 2: J D and Josiah too. I mean, you guys are
- 9:16Speaker 2: all heavy you're all heavy hitters.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we got we got a great little team over here.
- 9:22Speaker 5: It's a it's a small team, but it's an always
- 9:24Speaker 5: growing team. And uh yeah, I couldn't be more proud
- 9:28Speaker 5: of Josiah. You know, he joined our team really towards
- 9:31Speaker 5: the end of uh not last year's May, the May beforehand.
- 9:35Speaker 5: And uh he's really just grown, you know, as a
- 9:39Speaker 5: as a member of our team, and his in his confidence,
- 9:42Speaker 5: he's always had it in him to be a really
- 9:44Speaker 5: great leader in schools and really great communicator. But he
- 9:48Speaker 5: started from scratch. He Joe Sie will be the first
- 9:50Speaker 5: to tell you he was homeschooled growing up. He doesn't
- 9:52Speaker 5: know what it's like to be in school and doesn't
- 9:55Speaker 5: know what the school system operates like.
- 9:57Speaker 4: And within those confines, that's a piece of what do
- 10:00Speaker 4: you know?
- 10:00Speaker 5: Understanding the building that we're going into helps us understand
- 10:04Speaker 5: the culture. And he's really just you know, hit it
- 10:06Speaker 5: full throttle and became a really great member of Sweethearts
- 10:10Speaker 5: and Heroes.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Heads up here, I am going to be asking you
- 10:14Speaker 2: to give the definition of what Sweethearts and Heroes is.
- 10:19Speaker 2: What is it that you do and who you are
- 10:22Speaker 2: and all that stuff. But before I do that, I
- 10:25Speaker 2: got to tell you, man, it's every single time someone
- 10:29Speaker 2: from Sweethearts and Heroes comes on the air, it leaves
- 10:33Speaker 2: me with so much stuff to think about. To be
- 10:43Speaker 2: even more transparent with you, I love listening to stuff
- 10:50Speaker 2: when I'm in my truck, when i'm driving, when I'm alone,
- 10:54Speaker 2: I love to be engaged and listening to stuff, and
- 10:57Speaker 2: usually that satellite radio escape I go somewhere. I listen
- 11:01Speaker 2: to new content on Wednesdays after I'm done chatting with
- 11:10Speaker 2: sweethearts and heroes. I find myself getting into my vehicle
- 11:16Speaker 2: and not having any music or any chatter or anything
- 11:19Speaker 2: on but silence, so that it's still resonating with me
- 11:25Speaker 2: my my forty minute drive after I leave here. That's
- 11:31Speaker 2: what I'm thinking about, is what you guys are saying
- 11:34Speaker 2: on my podcast is really powerful stuff.
- 11:40Speaker 5: Ah well, I'm glad to hear that. I thought at
- 11:43Speaker 5: first you were discussing. You know, sometimes I get done
- 11:45Speaker 5: with a group of seventh graders at the end of
- 11:47Speaker 5: the day and I need forty minutes of silence in
- 11:50Speaker 5: my car afterwards, as well from all the talking that
- 11:52Speaker 5: I hear. But it's not for that, it's for what
- 11:54Speaker 5: the words that we're saying. Yeah, that's really great because
- 11:57Speaker 5: I know that every single one of us, for the
- 11:59Speaker 5: most part, we have a job where we talk, so
- 12:02Speaker 5: we can definitely and you know you too, so we
- 12:05Speaker 5: can we can talk people's ears off sometimes. But it's
- 12:07Speaker 5: nice to hear that. You know, as you get in
- 12:09Speaker 5: the car, you're you're really thinking about some of the
- 12:11Speaker 5: stuff that's being said on these on these podcasts, and
- 12:14Speaker 5: I think the clips that I've seen, you know, those
- 12:16Speaker 5: really kind of small sections everybody that has been on
- 12:20Speaker 5: has done a really nice job spreading our message and
- 12:23Speaker 5: talking about what it is to be a sweetheart and
- 12:25Speaker 5: what it means to be a hero. And that's really
- 12:27Speaker 5: a testament to our leadership as well. You know, when
- 12:31Speaker 5: I came on board, uh, you know, Tom took me
- 12:34Speaker 5: under his reins a little bit. And you know, since then,
- 12:36Speaker 5: I can probably count on one hand the amount of
- 12:39Speaker 5: times where I said something and He's gone, oh, maybe
- 12:43Speaker 5: we should do it this way. He trusts me fully,
- 12:46Speaker 5: and I think he trusts everyone fully to be their
- 12:48Speaker 5: own person. Now, if you come to him and you
- 12:50Speaker 5: have a question, he's he's always happy to answer and
- 12:53Speaker 5: help out. But he really kind of, you know, puts
- 12:56Speaker 5: trust in us to do our own thing, which is
- 12:58Speaker 5: a really which is a really great thing.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I want to I want to get caught up with you.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I want to hear about where you've you've been, what
- 13:05Speaker 2: you've done. I know that you've been incredibly busy over
- 13:09Speaker 2: the last couple of months now, but uh, first set
- 13:13Speaker 2: us up here a little bit for folks that may
- 13:15Speaker 2: not be familiar with you may not be familiar with
- 13:20Speaker 2: what we do here at the aired out podcast on Wednesdays.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Who is Pat Fish? And what in the heck is
- 13:26Speaker 2: Sweethearts and Heroes?
- 13:30Speaker 5: Well two two awesome questions, JD. The first one a
- 13:35Speaker 5: little bit easier to explain. Pat Fish is a guy
- 13:40Speaker 5: from South Glens Falls, New York who.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Grew up and didn't want to really grow up.
- 13:46Speaker 5: As many of us, you know, have those situations as
- 13:50Speaker 5: we do grow up where we feel like.
- 13:52Speaker 4: You know, hey, let's still keep having fun. I didn't
- 13:54Speaker 4: want to.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Go into anything school related because I didn't really like
- 13:58Speaker 5: school growing up. I now get to go to school
- 14:02Speaker 5: every single day, but I get to pull kids out
- 14:03Speaker 5: of class, goop around, and have fun.
- 14:05Speaker 4: And play games. That's what I like to say.
- 14:07Speaker 5: My degree, my master's degree is in organizational psychology, and
- 14:10Speaker 5: I definitely tie that in in the schools that I
- 14:12Speaker 5: am in. But you know, first and foremost, I like
- 14:16Speaker 5: to have fun and then Sweethearts and Heroes.
- 14:19Speaker 4: I got some practice the last two days.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I was in a school that I haven't been in
- 14:22Speaker 5: since twenty twenty one. And usually when I go into schools,
- 14:27Speaker 5: even if I've just been there once before, most of
- 14:29Speaker 5: our team will tell you I have a decent memory
- 14:31Speaker 5: when it comes to this type of stuff, and I
- 14:34Speaker 5: could not remember a single person's face at this school,
- 14:37Speaker 5: and I was like, what is going on? Am I
- 14:39Speaker 5: just getting old? Why can't I recognize any of it?
- 14:42Speaker 5: It was because the last time I was there, everybody
- 14:44Speaker 5: had masks on, and so it's been a while since
- 14:47Speaker 5: I had been in this school. So with that being said,
- 14:50Speaker 5: we were reintroducing a lot of our concepts. You know,
- 14:53Speaker 5: Tom and Rick presented at their school in May, which
- 14:58Speaker 5: that is probably, you know, not the most ideal time
- 15:01Speaker 5: to bring in any type of presentation at a school
- 15:03Speaker 5: because by May kids are usually tuning out of stuff.
- 15:06Speaker 5: But the students remembered it, and you know, I would,
- 15:09Speaker 5: you know, reintroduce some of the messaging of the presentation.
- 15:12Speaker 5: I'd say, you know, my two bald friends were here
- 15:15Speaker 5: in May.
- 15:16Speaker 4: You know, one of the guys was.
- 15:17Speaker 5: On the screen kicking and punching people, and then there
- 15:19Speaker 5: was another guy that was bald because he got blown out.
- 15:22Speaker 5: And usually kids are like, like, they're my friends. I
- 15:24Speaker 5: can talk about him like that.
- 15:25Speaker 4: It's fine.
- 15:26Speaker 5: And as we start discussing, I go, well, one of
- 15:29Speaker 5: my bald friends. He talked a little bit about how
- 15:32Speaker 5: in the sixteenth century when the word bully was first
- 15:35Speaker 5: invented a really really long time ago. It meant sweetheart,
- 15:41Speaker 5: and it was never meant to be used as that
- 15:42Speaker 5: mean scary bully that we think of that's you know,
- 15:45Speaker 5: give me your lunch money and pushes people around. It
- 15:47Speaker 5: was supposed to be somebody that pushed you, but to
- 15:49Speaker 5: make you better. And as you look around the room,
- 15:52Speaker 5: I might find you know that young man who's a
- 15:55Speaker 5: big basketball player, or that you know young lady who's
- 15:58Speaker 5: a great soccer player, And I'll say you have a
- 16:00Speaker 5: coach in your life that pushed you, but in.
- 16:03Speaker 4: A good way. You might not always like it.
- 16:05Speaker 5: But they made you run those extra sprints, they made
- 16:07Speaker 5: you make those extra layouts.
- 16:09Speaker 4: That's a sixteenth century bully. That's a sweetheart.
- 16:11Speaker 5: In some ways, it's one some of your teachers, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 5: that teacher that actually can get you to do your work.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Or maybe it's just that friend you know when you're
- 16:19Speaker 5: in fifth grade. It's that friend that you go to
- 16:21Speaker 5: the amusement park and you are afraid to ride any
- 16:24Speaker 5: of the rides, so you're pretending you're going to go
- 16:26Speaker 5: to the bathroom instead of getting on the rides, Like,
- 16:28Speaker 5: oh sorry, guys, I got a peek and they're like,
- 16:30Speaker 5: come on, get on it, your big baby, stop being
- 16:32Speaker 5: a chicken. Well that's not the nicest thing to say
- 16:34Speaker 5: to somebody, but they're doing it because they care about
- 16:36Speaker 5: you and they want you to have fun. They're pushing
- 16:38Speaker 5: you for good reason. As you get a little bit older,
- 16:40Speaker 5: maybe it's that friend that's like, hey, if you like them,
- 16:43Speaker 5: why don't you actually try talking to them, Go ask
- 16:46Speaker 5: them out instead of just being scared, like, what's the
- 16:48Speaker 5: worst thing that happened? They say, no, you got this.
- 16:51Speaker 5: That's a great friend to have. That's a sixteenth century bully.
- 16:54Speaker 5: That's a sweetheart. The people who are there for us
- 16:56Speaker 5: when we need it most. Those are the simplest ways
- 16:58Speaker 5: that a sweetheart can be there for you. As you
- 17:01Speaker 5: move forward, it's those carriers of hope, those people that
- 17:03Speaker 5: give hope to others when they need.
- 17:05Speaker 4: And then a hero is just what you think it is.
- 17:07Speaker 5: It's somebody that jumps into action and does what others
- 17:11Speaker 5: aren't willing to do to help people need. And I
- 17:15Speaker 5: think last time I was on your podcast, JD, we
- 17:17Speaker 5: discussed my all my bracelets that I have.
- 17:20Speaker 4: I have them right over there. I can grab them
- 17:21Speaker 4: for you later and show them to you.
- 17:22Speaker 5: But every single one of those bracelets on there, and
- 17:26Speaker 5: every single one of my little superheroes that I keep
- 17:29Speaker 5: in that container has a different story. And I've found that,
- 17:32Speaker 5: you know, sometimes students' superheroes are their friends, sometimes their teachers,
- 17:38Speaker 5: sometimes their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, or no.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Maybe they're even fictional ones that they really look up to.
- 17:45Speaker 5: And you know, Spider Man's a pretty amazing role model
- 17:48Speaker 5: for a lot of young kids out there. I got
- 17:50Speaker 5: Mawana in my bag. Mowana is a really awesome superhero.
- 17:53Speaker 5: She doesn't have any superpowers, but she jumps into action
- 17:56Speaker 5: to save the whole island.
- 17:57Speaker 4: That's an amazing power to have.
- 17:58Speaker 2: It's incredible.
- 18:00Speaker 5: As we talk about what a sweetheart is and what
- 18:02Speaker 5: a hero is, there are people that do what others
- 18:05Speaker 5: aren't willing to do. On the hero and and sweethearts
- 18:07Speaker 5: are those people that give you hope when you need
- 18:09Speaker 5: the most.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Refresh me. Now, aren't you a new dad who's just
- 18:16Speaker 2: became a dad? Was it was it you? Was it Josiah?
- 18:19Speaker 2: I'm confused.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Josiah became a second a second time.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Daddy's still live the dad Josiah had his second kid
- 18:28Speaker 5: earlier this year, and then my wife is expecting in April.
- 18:32Speaker 2: All right, that's what I'm thinking. Man, you guys got
- 18:36Speaker 2: a lot going listen to the the type of messaging
- 18:42Speaker 2: that you you guys are already instilling in your children
- 18:48Speaker 2: and going to I mean, these kids are are Your
- 18:52Speaker 2: kid is lucky before he or she is even born, man,
- 18:56Speaker 2: And I mean that you guys like I couldn't think
- 18:59Speaker 2: of a better thing to teach your kid.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Well, I appreciate that. I appreciate that, JD.
- 19:11Speaker 5: You know, as I've been in my schools that this year,
- 19:15Speaker 5: I don't know if we discussed this with you or
- 19:17Speaker 5: if Joe has or anything along those lines. This year
- 19:20Speaker 5: we started our community Ambassador programming and what that entails
- 19:26Speaker 5: is myself, I have two schools that I'm in every
- 19:30Speaker 5: single week this year, one being Salem, the other being
- 19:34Speaker 5: Taekwonda Roga. I did luck out they're both purple schools,
- 19:37Speaker 5: So I just got some purple T shirts and we're
- 19:39Speaker 5: ready to go on that. You just add free hugs
- 19:42Speaker 5: to purple. But as I spent more and more time
- 19:45Speaker 5: with some of these young people and some of these students,
- 19:47Speaker 5: it's been really kind of neat because you go into
- 19:49Speaker 5: a school once and you get to.
- 19:51Speaker 4: Interact with staff, you get to.
- 19:53Speaker 5: Present, you get to have conversations with kids, and then
- 19:55Speaker 5: you go all right, you know, good luck the rest
- 19:58Speaker 5: of the year. Hopefully you jump into act and you know,
- 20:00Speaker 5: help those other people.
- 20:01Speaker 4: That need it. But I'm not going to see you
- 20:04Speaker 4: again because I'm not going to be here.
- 20:06Speaker 5: And in these schools where we've had these time periods
- 20:10Speaker 5: where we actually get to grow as part of the
- 20:12Speaker 5: school community and just sprinkling hope here and there where
- 20:15Speaker 5: we can best in these districts, it's been amazing to
- 20:20Speaker 5: really connect and my wife has had the opportunity to
- 20:23Speaker 5: meet many of these students, and I think we have
- 20:26Speaker 5: free babysitters for for life at some of these schools
- 20:29Speaker 5: because every single one of these kids is like looking
- 20:33Speaker 5: forward to it and they all want to know what
- 20:35Speaker 5: the name is and we're not telling anybody.
- 20:36Speaker 4: It's top secret, but it's uh.
- 20:39Speaker 5: It's been really kind of cool to need to become
- 20:42Speaker 5: a part of a.
- 20:43Speaker 4: School community in both of these districts.
- 20:45Speaker 5: And I think Joe has done the same exact thing
- 20:47Speaker 5: over at oesj where you know, once a week he
- 20:50Speaker 5: shows up and he adds hope where he can, and
- 20:54Speaker 5: you know, whether that's through the programming that we do,
- 20:56Speaker 5: or even you know, stopping in the cafeteria and having
- 20:59Speaker 5: some small conversations with students that look like they need
- 21:02Speaker 5: somebody to talk to.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Where where have you been over the last couple of months?
- 21:07Speaker 2: What have you been doing? Like, give us, give us
- 21:11Speaker 2: a typical day.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Okay, so I'll just go, you know, with these two
- 21:16Speaker 5: schools Monday through Wednesday on a schools all over as well.
- 21:20Speaker 5: But you know that varies whether it's running a Brave program,
- 21:23Speaker 5: which is our mix Stage leadership program where we take
- 21:26Speaker 5: older students down to younger grade levels to really teach
- 21:30Speaker 5: them what bullying is in ways that you can jump
- 21:33Speaker 5: into action and prevent it so that when you're in
- 21:35Speaker 5: third grade and a cool older kid comes down and
- 21:38Speaker 5: teaches you some of their secret superpowers, all of a sudden,
- 21:42Speaker 5: you have some tools.
- 21:43Speaker 4: Wow, when you.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Move up to the middle school that are better than
- 21:48Speaker 5: oh you tell a teacher, because that doesn't really work
- 21:50Speaker 5: so well in the long run.
- 21:51Speaker 2: Sure it stops, it.
- 21:53Speaker 5: Stops being an action that will do well for that
- 21:57Speaker 5: student and for you, you know, it becomes code. Did
- 22:00Speaker 5: not ride on other people at a certain age level,
- 22:03Speaker 5: and so let's give them some other tools and we
- 22:06Speaker 5: use high schoolers to do that or middle schoolers in
- 22:09Speaker 5: some of our school programs.
- 22:10Speaker 4: So I've had a few of those going on.
- 22:12Speaker 5: I've had a few schools where we've been going and
- 22:14Speaker 5: doing our circle visits, which is where I get to.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Sit and listen a whole lot.
- 22:18Speaker 5: But my heart and soul this year, for sure, has
- 22:22Speaker 5: been into these two schools where it's been our CAP.
- 22:26Speaker 5: I keep saying CAP programming. The P stands for programming,
- 22:29Speaker 5: so that's a little bit confusing. But these schools of
- 22:34Speaker 5: Salem and Taekwonder Roga, it's been really kind of neat
- 22:38Speaker 5: for me to be a part of these districts because
- 22:41Speaker 5: one school, Tae Kwonda Roga, I've been in for the
- 22:43Speaker 5: past three years, and when I walked in on day one,
- 22:45Speaker 5: there were already students that I was really well connected with.
- 22:48Speaker 5: There are already teachers that I was really well connected with.
- 22:51Speaker 5: There's fourth graders now that went through our Brave program
- 22:56Speaker 5: when they were in second grade and had older kids
- 23:00Speaker 5: that have now graduated.
- 23:01Speaker 4: You had Hayley on.
- 23:02Speaker 5: Your podcast, Yet we've had these older students that are
- 23:05Speaker 5: now off at college that went down and worked with
- 23:08Speaker 5: some of these younger students who are now getting to
- 23:10Speaker 5: that point where eventually they're going to be the ones
- 23:12Speaker 5: coming down to teach some of the younger students. So
- 23:14Speaker 5: Ty was at this one place and Salem I had
- 23:17Speaker 5: really only come and done circle visits before, and I
- 23:20Speaker 5: had only done a handful of them. So this year
- 23:22Speaker 5: it was really a fresh start for me to just go, Okay,
- 23:25Speaker 5: here's my blank canvas, here's what this school looks like
- 23:28Speaker 5: right now. Let's see where we can get this district
- 23:31Speaker 5: to by the end of the year. And that is
- 23:34Speaker 5: not a solo effort. It's more so just operating in
- 23:37Speaker 5: a way that helps others do what they have to do,
- 23:41Speaker 5: and you know, get students connected and get students having conversations,
- 23:44Speaker 5: get students coming up with games that allow for conversations. Jade,
- 23:47Speaker 5: I got a great one. We can play one right now.
- 23:49Speaker 5: They ever play wavelength before? Negative Okay, this was invented
- 23:54Speaker 5: by some students somewhere, I don't know. When it comes
- 23:57Speaker 5: to TikTok, I always say that, you know, there's no
- 24:00Speaker 5: such thing as a game that's invented by anyone anymore,
- 24:03Speaker 5: and there never really has been. You can even go
- 24:05Speaker 5: back to baseball and well that was inspired by rounders
- 24:08Speaker 5: over in Europe and cricket in some forms, Like nobody
- 24:11Speaker 5: invented baseball. I hate to break it to Tom's from Cooperstown.
- 24:15Speaker 5: He might get mad about that one. Yeah, yeah, that's
- 24:18Speaker 5: that's just.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Not that's only going to be upset about that.
- 24:21Speaker 4: It was not invented in Cooperstown, New York.
- 24:23Speaker 5: That was a made up marketing scheme by Actually the
- 24:28Speaker 5: dude's last name was Spalding. He was, you know, the founder,
- 24:31Speaker 5: and he needed to find a way to make it
- 24:33Speaker 5: so that baseball was truly America's game.
- 24:35Speaker 4: But nothing was truly invented.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Games are all just reinventions of other games and these
- 24:41Speaker 5: and I tall to kids about that all the time.
- 24:44Speaker 5: They come in with a game and they're like, it's
- 24:45Speaker 5: not good, and I go, basketball wasn't good when it
- 24:47Speaker 5: was first invented.
- 24:49Speaker 4: The first college game was twelve to.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Six, sure, and the baskets were closed at the bottom
- 24:56Speaker 5: and people had to grab the ball out. It was
- 24:58Speaker 5: in the ladder and restarts. So you make adjustments as
- 25:02Speaker 5: you go on. But this this really neat game that
- 25:05Speaker 5: these kids from taekwond to Rogua really kind of put
- 25:08Speaker 5: me onto is called wavelength.
- 25:10Speaker 4: And the way that it works. I want you JD.
- 25:14Speaker 5: Right now to think of a number and don't tell
- 25:18Speaker 5: me what it is. You can even hold it up
- 25:19Speaker 5: on your screen because I can't even see you right now,
- 25:22Speaker 5: so I'll close my eyes just so nobody thinks that
- 25:25Speaker 5: we're cheating.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I'll hold your number up one through.
- 25:27Speaker 2: Ten, got it?
- 25:29Speaker 4: Got it? Okay, Now we got to see if we're
- 25:31Speaker 4: on the same wavelength. Ready.
- 25:33Speaker 5: Ten is the best in the world, right Ten is awesome,
- 25:37Speaker 5: tens amazing, and one is like this is crappy, this
- 25:40Speaker 5: is terrible. So you know, if I were playing with
- 25:44Speaker 5: somebody that I knew loved candy, then I would be like.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Candy and they might say.
- 25:54Speaker 5: I'm enjoy and I'm like, I know they hate coconut,
- 25:57Speaker 5: so I think that's gonna be like I'm thinking somewhere
- 25:59Speaker 5: around two right now.
- 26:01Speaker 4: And then I ask another one, oh.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Movies, and they say, like the worst movie they can
- 26:05Speaker 5: think of, and I'm like, yeah, it's definitely two. And
- 26:07Speaker 5: that's my guest. So I'm gonna give you the category.
- 26:11Speaker 5: You have your number that you have, and then I'm
- 26:14Speaker 5: gonna probably give you three categories and then we'll see
- 26:17Speaker 5: if we're on the same wavelength.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Sound good?
- 26:18Speaker 2: That sounds great?
- 26:20Speaker 4: All right?
- 26:21Speaker 5: My first category for you, JD, seeing as though you
- 26:26Speaker 5: are you know, we've had conversations about music before. You're
- 26:30Speaker 5: a big music guy. So I'm gonna go with bands
- 26:35Speaker 5: or musicians artists. That's your category. So ten would be
- 26:38Speaker 5: like the best of the best, and one would be
- 26:41Speaker 5: like that's awful.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Got it?
- 26:48Speaker 4: What do you go for me?
- 26:53Speaker 2: I'm not sure I'm following here.
- 26:55Speaker 5: Okay, So if ten is the Beatles, you you have
- 27:00Speaker 5: a number that you picked, right, Yes, okay, So ten
- 27:04Speaker 5: might be like the Beatles and one might be I
- 27:07Speaker 5: don't know whoever. The worst band you can possibly think
- 27:09Speaker 5: of is your number is somewhere between one and ten.
- 27:12Speaker 5: You got to think it somewhere in the middle. Let's
- 27:14Speaker 5: start easier than that. Let's go cereals.
- 27:18Speaker 2: Oh no, we can do I want to do. I
- 27:21Speaker 2: want to do serious, but no, let's let's stay with
- 27:23Speaker 2: Let's stay with the bands.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:25Speaker 2: So, so I'm so right now I'm thinking of my
- 27:28Speaker 2: favorite band and I'm telling you what number I think.
- 27:31Speaker 4: They are no, no, no, no, no, you're telling me
- 27:35Speaker 4: a band that you think fits your number. Oh so
- 27:40Speaker 4: if let's just say your number was eight, then I'd say.
- 27:45Speaker 5: You know, maybe it's I got you the band, Maybe
- 27:49Speaker 5: it's the Eagles, right, if you're I don't really know
- 27:52Speaker 5: what your scale is, but we're trying to see if
- 27:54Speaker 5: we're on the same wave.
- 27:55Speaker 2: All right, I got you totally. Yep, all right, here's
- 27:58Speaker 2: my answer.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Okay, so right now in my head, I'm trying to,
- 28:04Speaker 5: you know, kind of think of that scale there and
- 28:06Speaker 5: you know.
- 28:06Speaker 4: Knowing you and I'm leaning.
- 28:08Speaker 5: Right now towards you know, maybe a six, maybe a
- 28:12Speaker 5: seven somewhere in there, but it's not we're.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Not official yet, so's I could be close. I could
- 28:18Speaker 4: not be. But let's do cereals next.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Yep, you ready, don't. I don't even have to think
- 28:23Speaker 2: about it. Cinnamon toast crunch.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Oh see, that's a really good one for me, and
- 28:31Speaker 5: that might bump that up. I'm seven or eight right
- 28:34Speaker 5: now on my scale, So I got one more to
- 28:37Speaker 5: try and see if we're on the thingk we're on
- 28:40Speaker 5: the thing that.
- 28:40Speaker 4: We need to be on.
- 28:41Speaker 5: And seeing as though it's Thanksgiving, let's go with Thanksgiving
- 28:47Speaker 5: plate items, So things on your plate?
- 28:51Speaker 4: What do you got for me?
- 28:57Speaker 2: I would have to go with I'd have to go
- 29:02Speaker 2: with the mashed potatoes.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I think I'm gonna lock in on that. Seven.
- 29:09Speaker 5: I've been bouncing back and forth between I think seven's
- 29:12Speaker 5: my answer.
- 29:13Speaker 4: What was your number?
- 29:14Speaker 2: Nine?
- 29:15Speaker 1: Wow?
- 29:16Speaker 5: Okay, I almost bumped it up to an eighth there,
- 29:18Speaker 5: but nine is a good one. And you know then
- 29:21Speaker 5: from there the next person would go and the next
- 29:23Speaker 5: person would go. But it's really, it really is kind
- 29:25Speaker 5: of interesting. And you play that at your Thanksgiving table.
- 29:28Speaker 2: And I'm playing this tonight man with Lily.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I Oh, Lily will love it.
- 29:34Speaker 5: I played it with, you know, all sorts of different
- 29:36Speaker 5: students who had different ideas and some of the stuff
- 29:39Speaker 5: they came up with. I was at one school that
- 29:40Speaker 5: did it, and they went teachers in this school and
- 29:44Speaker 5: this and this kid go the number was five. This
- 29:47Speaker 5: is the worst part, and this kid goes so and
- 29:50Speaker 5: so on a good day, And I was like, oh,
- 29:53Speaker 5: don't tell me that. But it's neat the perspectives and
- 29:59Speaker 5: the things that you you get to hear from young
- 30:01Speaker 5: people just from playing a silly little game and looping
- 30:03Speaker 5: around and that's one of the ones.
- 30:05Speaker 4: That I've been playing quite a bit.
- 30:07Speaker 5: But you know, you go to a school like Tye
- 30:09Speaker 5: or Salem, and it's really awesome to watch as these
- 30:14Speaker 5: kids connect more and more and more. At tay Kwonda Roga,
- 30:17Speaker 5: we just did this past weekend on two weeks notice,
- 30:22Speaker 5: we got together a team of kids and said, hey,
- 30:26Speaker 5: we're raising money for the Special Olympics of New York.
- 30:29Speaker 4: There's a they're doing a polar plunge.
- 30:31Speaker 5: And some high schools they have a challenge for these
- 30:34Speaker 5: kids were like, oh, we're in, we'll join, And within
- 30:37Speaker 5: two weeks we had twenty three participants. They raised well
- 30:42Speaker 5: over two thousand dollars in two weeks and jumped into
- 30:46Speaker 5: a freezing cold lake. And I'd be hard pressed, you
- 30:49Speaker 5: know that. You could have some arguments with some of
- 30:51Speaker 5: the schools there that had like sixty kids, seventy kids,
- 30:54Speaker 5: but there wasn't anyone ladder and crazier on that beach
- 30:57Speaker 5: than the kids wearing the free hug shirt from tay
- 31:00Speaker 5: Kwana Roga.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Wow, dude, it's just.
- 31:03Speaker 5: Really awesome to get to become a part of a
- 31:06Speaker 5: district and to become a part of you know, how
- 31:10Speaker 5: they connect and how they give hope to others. And
- 31:14Speaker 5: it's just been something that I've been really proud to
- 31:16Speaker 5: watch at Tye and at Salem, and even watching Joe
- 31:20Speaker 5: and the work that he's been doing at Oees.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Jo.
- 31:22Speaker 2: You guys carry hope right on your shirt sleeves when
- 31:27Speaker 2: you go into a school. That is I think your
- 31:30Speaker 2: your primary, uh, your primary focus that above all things.
- 31:36Speaker 2: And there's gonna be plenty of of crap going on
- 31:41Speaker 2: in your personal life, in the news, circumstantial stuff, But
- 31:47Speaker 2: in the end, if we don't have hope, it's kind
- 31:51Speaker 2: of the foundation, man, if we're going to push through
- 31:54Speaker 2: anything in our lives, it's got to be it's We've
- 31:58Speaker 2: got to have hope and belief that things are going
- 32:03Speaker 2: to turn out good on the backside, and that we
- 32:05Speaker 2: may possibly a couple of months from now, a year
- 32:09Speaker 2: from now, be looking back at what our experience was
- 32:16Speaker 2: and say, wow, look at things are actually better now.
- 32:19Speaker 2: I wish back then that I had more hope, because
- 32:25Speaker 2: now that I'm in the future, I can see that
- 32:28Speaker 2: I should have.
- 32:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:33Speaker 5: And you know, the fascinating piece about what we do
- 32:37Speaker 5: with Sweethearts and Heroes to me is that work is
- 32:43Speaker 5: largely being done in schools already. You can go to
- 32:46Speaker 5: any other school in America that's never heard of Sweethearts
- 32:49Speaker 5: and Heroes before, and you know, if you have somebody
- 32:52Speaker 5: on that staff who is trained as a counselor a
- 32:56Speaker 5: social worker or a school psychologist, they're working towards spread
- 32:59Speaker 5: and hope the best they can and doing a really
- 33:02Speaker 5: nice job of it. But the difficult piece that a
- 33:05Speaker 5: lot of these employees of this school have is that
- 33:09Speaker 5: there's also a whole lot of other things in your
- 33:11Speaker 5: job description that you have to take care of, and
- 33:14Speaker 5: you have to you know, a lot of them have
- 33:16Speaker 5: to do with class scheduling, and a lot of them
- 33:19Speaker 5: have to do with the structuring of the way that
- 33:21Speaker 5: the school operation works. And then you know, you're constantly
- 33:25Speaker 5: running around putting out fires because you're working as it's intervention, right.
- 33:30Speaker 5: You have these students that got into a fight, these
- 33:33Speaker 5: students have drama going this student has something really really
- 33:37Speaker 5: difficult going on at home, and that is absolutely needed.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Intervention is super important. But you know, the work that
- 33:44Speaker 5: we're doing at Sweethearts and Heroes can aid in that
- 33:47Speaker 5: by becoming that prevention piece. And let's connect, let's have conversations,
- 33:53Speaker 5: Let's listen to each other, Let's grow empathy, so that hopefully,
- 33:58Speaker 5: down the line, it doesn't get to that point where
- 34:00Speaker 5: these students are getting into fights, where these students are
- 34:04Speaker 5: making hopeless and destructive decisions. And you know, I don't
- 34:07Speaker 5: want to I don't want to add fire to any
- 34:11Speaker 5: you know, ongoing stories, but I've been in a school
- 34:14Speaker 5: pretty recently that had a whole issue going on in
- 34:18Speaker 5: the news with uh, it's bullying, and well, yeah, every
- 34:23Speaker 5: school in America has a bullying issue. Every place in
- 34:27Speaker 5: America has bullies. For all of human history, there's been bullied.
- 34:31Speaker 5: There always is going to be bullies as well. What
- 34:34Speaker 5: we're trying to do is we can't go into schools good,
- 34:37Speaker 5: don't bully kids. Okay, maybe that works for a day
- 34:40Speaker 5: and you're super inspired if you're getting bullied, stand up
- 34:43Speaker 5: for yourself, and then we leave. So what we're trying
- 34:46Speaker 5: to do is we're trying to give those other students
- 34:50Speaker 5: that see it happening, that see students that are being bullied,
- 34:53Speaker 5: see students who are hopeless, that see students who are
- 34:56Speaker 5: dealing with other issues. They are carrying around that invisible
- 34:58Speaker 5: suitcase that has nothing to do with bullying sometimes or
- 35:02Speaker 5: it's just the tip of the iceberg. And have those
- 35:05Speaker 5: students that have you know, a lot going for them,
- 35:07Speaker 5: have people that look up to them, have you know,
- 35:11Speaker 5: a great season in this sport, are the leader of
- 35:14Speaker 5: the play. And take those students, say hey, you see
- 35:16Speaker 5: this stuff happening, do something about it. Be the person
- 35:20Speaker 5: that is someone's hero, Be the person that can give
- 35:23Speaker 5: them hope. And now down the line, maybe we don't
- 35:26Speaker 5: need to have that intervention because they don't necessarily get
- 35:30Speaker 5: to that point where they need it. And you know,
- 35:32Speaker 5: that's the work that we're being done, that we have
- 35:35Speaker 5: being done in these schools that we're in and I
- 35:37Speaker 5: think for us it goes hand in hand with the
- 35:40Speaker 5: amazing work that the counselors and social workers and psychologists
- 35:43Speaker 5: and schools across America.
- 35:44Speaker 4: Are doing all the way.
- 35:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, as as children kids, I mean, you
- 35:54Speaker 2: could you could point the finger at maturity, you could
- 35:57Speaker 2: point the finger at the old cliche kids will be kids.
- 36:04Speaker 2: But man, it's like kids joke around a lot, and
- 36:13Speaker 2: especially among among their peers, there's a lot of joking around,
- 36:17Speaker 2: goofing around, silliness that can be misinterpreted by the on
- 36:26Speaker 2: the receiving end as I'm I'm being bullied or I'm
- 36:32Speaker 2: getting ribbed too you know too often? Uh too much.
- 36:37Speaker 2: It's cross, it's across the line. Where's the threshold? How
- 36:41Speaker 2: do you how do you teach kids? Hey, there's there's
- 36:44Speaker 2: a there's a real difference between having fun with with
- 36:50Speaker 2: people that you you enjoy being around, that you like like.
- 36:55Speaker 2: You know, you've you've pat You've heard the the you
- 36:58Speaker 2: know people say, Uh, I wouldn't make fun of you
- 37:01Speaker 2: if I didn't like you, If I didn't like you,
- 37:03Speaker 2: I wouldn't make fun of you.
- 37:06Speaker 4: There's a massive difference between teasing and bullying.
- 37:10Speaker 2: I mean I get it all the time from from
- 37:15Speaker 2: from people that I love. I mean Tom is constantly
- 37:21Speaker 2: hammering away at me my height, my height, my weight,
- 37:25Speaker 2: my hair, I mean, the list goes on, and I'm like, bro,
- 37:30Speaker 2: who's who's got the fingernails painted?
- 37:32Speaker 4: Here?
- 37:32Speaker 2: What would you you want to go there? I'll get
- 37:34Speaker 2: in the cage with.
- 37:35Speaker 4: You that you know. It's funny Tom.
- 37:38Speaker 5: Tom's a big he loves to tease and he really
- 37:42Speaker 5: When I first joined Sweethearts and Heroes, him and Rick
- 37:44Speaker 5: go back at each other and forth at each other
- 37:47Speaker 5: like crazy, unbelievable. You know, you know, you don't want
- 37:51Speaker 5: to get into a burn battle with a roast guy
- 37:53Speaker 5: is one of Tom's favorite lines that he goes to.
- 37:55Speaker 5: But yeah, you know, I don't. I hate the challenge Tom.
- 37:59Speaker 5: But Tom seems to be pretty nice to me for
- 38:01Speaker 5: the most part. And at first I was like, maybe
- 38:03Speaker 5: he just doesn't like me that.
- 38:04Speaker 2: No, he's intimidated.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Yeah he knows I'll give it right back. And you
- 38:09Speaker 4: know that I don't want to get into the ring
- 38:12Speaker 4: with Tom.
- 38:12Speaker 5: But you know, we get into a roast battle, I
- 38:14Speaker 5: think I got him.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Rappers can think of words at a lightning speed.
- 38:20Speaker 5: We have the comeback game is certainly strong, and you know,
- 38:24Speaker 5: those are those are things that I think are beneficial
- 38:29Speaker 5: for young people to watch and to see. And that's
- 38:32Speaker 5: you know, when I go into a school and I say, yeah,
- 38:34Speaker 5: you had a presentation with two bald guys. One you know,
- 38:37Speaker 5: was on the screen kicking and punching people and the
- 38:39Speaker 5: other one got blown up. And the kid's like, I'm like,
- 38:41Speaker 5: they're my friends. I can talk like that, right. There's
- 38:44Speaker 5: a reason that I say those lines.
- 38:46Speaker 4: It's not just.
- 38:47Speaker 5: Because, oh, I like to pick on Tom and Rick
- 38:49Speaker 5: it's because, hey, it should be encouraged to laugh a
- 38:54Speaker 5: little bit. Sure, and Rick will be the first to
- 38:56Speaker 5: tell you when he got blown up in Iraq, one
- 38:59Speaker 5: of the first conversations that he had with one of
- 39:02Speaker 5: his buddies who looked down at him, and Rick was like,
- 39:05Speaker 5: how bad is it? And the guy liked to him
- 39:08Speaker 5: because he felt bad and was like, oh, it's not
- 39:10Speaker 5: that bad. And you know, Rick said back to him,
- 39:12Speaker 5: he goes, well, I'll never be as ugly as you are.
- 39:15Speaker 5: That should be encouraged. Rick's sense of humor is what
- 39:19Speaker 5: gave him hope. You know, guys like to joke around
- 39:22Speaker 5: and rip each other quite a bit.
- 39:24Speaker 2: And this is a guy, this is a guy who's who's,
- 39:28Speaker 2: frankly at the time, was brushing against death.
- 39:37Speaker 5: Yeah, and still had that sense of Okay, I'm gonna
- 39:41Speaker 5: joke around with my friends. And you know, I sit
- 39:43Speaker 5: in circles all the time with young people when you know,
- 39:46Speaker 5: so and so just had a conversation about their you know,
- 39:50Speaker 5: uncle who has cancer, or somebody's talking about you know,
- 39:53Speaker 5: their pet who had just passed away, or you know,
- 39:56Speaker 5: somebody's talking about, uh, you.
- 39:58Speaker 4: Know something really personal that they're going through.
- 40:01Speaker 5: And it gets to this young man who you know,
- 40:04Speaker 5: awkwardly makes a joke and ever it kind of falls flat,
- 40:09Speaker 5: or the teacher's given that look of like, well, you know,
- 40:12Speaker 5: he's just practicing his superpower.
- 40:16Speaker 4: He doesn't have it down yet.
- 40:18Speaker 5: He's working on it, and to be honest with you,
- 40:22Speaker 5: I think it should be encouraged at some level. Now,
- 40:26Speaker 5: if he's saying something disparaging to the other student on
- 40:29Speaker 5: purpose to harm that student, to make them feel small
- 40:32Speaker 5: or weaker about what they said, that's a different story.
- 40:34Speaker 5: Then we're venturing into bullying territory. But if that student
- 40:38Speaker 5: is just trying to alleviate the tension that they feel
- 40:41Speaker 5: in the room and that they feel for this young person,
- 40:45Speaker 5: well that is really close to empathy. We're working on it,
- 40:49Speaker 5: you know, we're working on okay, making a joke to
- 40:52Speaker 5: try and show some level of compassion to make that
- 40:54Speaker 5: person feel better. And guess what, I've had times in
- 40:57Speaker 5: my life where I've been going through something difficult, I've
- 41:00Speaker 5: had a tough day, and the friends of mine that
- 41:02Speaker 5: could cheer me up, well, those are the best people
- 41:05Speaker 5: to be around because they can make me laugh, they
- 41:07Speaker 5: can make me smile.
- 41:08Speaker 4: That's a really helpful thing. So all of those things
- 41:10Speaker 4: should be able to exist together.
- 41:13Speaker 5: We should be able to tease people, we should be
- 41:15Speaker 5: able to have fun with people. But you know, eventually,
- 41:19Speaker 5: sometimes it does venture into that bullying territory. And when
- 41:22Speaker 5: that's the case, well it should be addressed and there
- 41:25Speaker 5: should be discipline involved. I am a firm believer in that.
- 41:29Speaker 5: But JD, if you were to judge me for the
- 41:33Speaker 5: things that I did when I was fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
- 41:39Speaker 5: even eighteen, I wasn't a bully, but I certainly made
- 41:45Speaker 5: some mistakes and I certainly did some things that could
- 41:48Speaker 5: really venture into that territory of not so nice. And
- 41:52Speaker 5: most of it was not with the intention of being harmful.
- 41:56Speaker 5: Most of it was with the intention of being funny,
- 42:00Speaker 5: you know, having fun, goofing around, playing games. Sometimes we
- 42:03Speaker 5: get into that gray area between teasing and bullying, and
- 42:06Speaker 5: that's where we mess up. Yeah, you know, Tom and
- 42:09Speaker 5: I had a long conversation just this week about, Hey,
- 42:12Speaker 5: you know, we've made mistakes in our lives. We do
- 42:16Speaker 5: some dumb things, you know, someone It wasn't me. It
- 42:19Speaker 5: had absolutely nothing to do with me.
- 42:21Speaker 4: JD. But somebody for a senior prank in our school
- 42:24Speaker 4: was not I had nothing to do with it. But
- 42:26Speaker 4: somebody in our school put up the class of twenty
- 42:32Speaker 4: fourteen spread across eight different butt cheeks or however many
- 42:37Speaker 4: butt cheeks it was, and there was about five thousand
- 42:40Speaker 4: of those pictures just randomly placed throughout the school. I
- 42:43Speaker 4: don't know who did that. I don't know why anyone
- 42:46Speaker 4: would do that.
- 42:46Speaker 5: It's a really terrible thing, but somebody did it, and
- 42:50Speaker 5: it's a mistake, right, it's it's stuff that young people
- 42:53Speaker 5: do and they mess up.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Again. I had nothing to do with that, JD. It
- 42:57Speaker 4: wasn't me.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Oh oh, you've that very clear. Yeah, man, I hear you.
- 43:08Speaker 2: I hear you loud and clear. You know. I think
- 43:10Speaker 2: it's it's got to be uh, you know, there needs
- 43:14Speaker 2: to be some attention put on the receiving end. It's
- 43:17Speaker 2: it's mostly it's how did you feel when when that
- 43:21Speaker 2: was said to you? And when my good friends rip
- 43:24Speaker 2: me if if we if we're all laughing, and I'm
- 43:29Speaker 2: laughing because I know they're right. It's healthy. It's healthy,
- 43:36Speaker 2: and it makes us feel maybe more connected.
- 43:41Speaker 5: But if outside of that, at almost at a younger level,
- 43:46Speaker 5: at a primal level. Even you know, there's been studies
- 43:50Speaker 5: done where it's been shown that you go into tribes
- 43:56Speaker 5: of people and they will pick on the weekend slink.
- 44:00Speaker 5: And what it really is for is that weakest member,
- 44:05Speaker 5: when dealing with outsiders, is now going to be more
- 44:08Speaker 5: prepared for having dealt with the teasing they have dealt
- 44:12Speaker 5: with within.
- 44:12Speaker 4: Their own group.
- 44:13Speaker 5: And you know, I have a I have a younger
- 44:15Speaker 5: cousin who who is on the autism spectrum and you know,
- 44:19Speaker 5: growing up, uh, he was he was the manager for
- 44:23Speaker 5: his basketball team.
- 44:25Speaker 4: And you know, in my.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Experience, I was that basketball player at a different school
- 44:31Speaker 5: and we had we had a manager on our bench
- 44:35Speaker 5: who was awesome, but a special needs student. And you know,
- 44:38Speaker 5: we loved him, but we picked on him a decent
- 44:41Speaker 5: amount and when and it wasn't like, you know, bad,
- 44:44Speaker 5: We just had our secret handshakes and he'd make us
- 44:46Speaker 5: laugh and you know, we'd kind of you know, crack
- 44:48Speaker 5: jokes with him and get him riled up on the
- 44:50Speaker 5: bench and you know, get him going, and he would,
- 44:52Speaker 5: you know, be excited for but he felt like he
- 44:55Speaker 5: was part of that family. Sure, And what I thought
- 44:58Speaker 5: was really cool was in my conversation with my uncle
- 45:00Speaker 5: about my cousin. This was years ago, but he was
- 45:03Speaker 5: a manager on this team. You know, he kind of
- 45:05Speaker 5: watched it as he would notice like, hey, they yes,
- 45:10Speaker 5: they goop around, they pick on him a little bit,
- 45:12Speaker 5: but if it was anyone from the outside, they're going
- 45:15Speaker 5: to stand up for him. And that's the piece where
- 45:18Speaker 5: I think it ventures into. Okay, teasing is beneficial because
- 45:23Speaker 5: it's been shown that, yeah, we can pick on him
- 45:25Speaker 5: because he's ours, right, that's our brother. We can make
- 45:28Speaker 5: jokes about that person, but if somebody from the outside
- 45:32Speaker 5: does it, we're going to stand up for that person
- 45:34Speaker 5: that because he's ours. And you know, as we talk about,
- 45:37Speaker 5: we're going into schools and there's all these different inner
- 45:40Speaker 5: groups that exist within schools. You know, we're trying to
- 45:43Speaker 5: create as many new inner groups as humanly possible with
- 45:46Speaker 5: the circles.
- 45:46Speaker 4: That we do. Bringing kids from different.
- 45:50Speaker 5: Clicks is you know we used to call it, and
- 45:53Speaker 5: bringing them together and getting them having conversations so the
- 45:56Speaker 5: empathy can foster within that unit. And uh, I think
- 46:01Speaker 5: that's where you know, a little bit of teasing is
- 46:03Speaker 5: a great sign for that unit because if there's some teasing.
- 46:07Speaker 5: That means they're comfortable enough with each other where they
- 46:09Speaker 5: feel as though they can make some jokes and it's
- 46:13Speaker 5: not going to be taken as this person is coming
- 46:16Speaker 5: after me.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Yeah, who you can joke around with?
- 46:18Speaker 5: And you know who you can go a little bit
- 46:22Speaker 5: further with Rick, well enough to go a little bit
- 46:26Speaker 5: further with him and.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Sorry, yeah, And are we reciprocating too?
- 46:32Speaker 4: I mean, you know back and forth.
- 46:33Speaker 2: It's just a healthy it's just a healthy exchange here.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Or is it unwanted and there's you know, there's negative
- 46:41Speaker 2: feelings that are attached to it. That's what we have
- 46:44Speaker 2: we have to ask ourselves.
- 46:46Speaker 5: There's a great There's a young man I love, and
- 46:48Speaker 5: he gave me a Pokemon card last year and he
- 46:52Speaker 5: signed it on the back and he was like, you
- 46:53Speaker 5: can use this as your talking piece of different schools,
- 46:56Speaker 5: and I have.
- 46:56Speaker 4: I've used it at quite a few different schools. Now.
- 46:59Speaker 4: A young man's name is Heaven.
- 47:01Speaker 5: Is this little guy seventh grader And just about every
- 47:04Speaker 5: time I've been in Kevin's school, he's been somewhere in
- 47:08Speaker 5: or near or around the.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Office for getting in trouble. Tell him every single time,
- 47:12Speaker 4: because he's he makes me laugh, he makes me chuckle.
- 47:15Speaker 4: He's a funny kid.
- 47:16Speaker 5: He's you know, raised by his grandparents and they did
- 47:20Speaker 5: a you know, a really nice job of creating this,
- 47:24Speaker 5: you know, very socially, he's he's he's socially strong as
- 47:29Speaker 5: a young person, but he's always trying to be funny
- 47:33Speaker 5: and he crosses the.
- 47:34Speaker 4: Line quite a bit.
- 47:35Speaker 5: And I always, like my constant reminder is just, dude,
- 47:39Speaker 5: the best jokes make everybody laugh. And he's working on it, right,
- 47:44Speaker 5: you gotta It takes steps, it's a process, but the
- 47:46Speaker 5: best jokes can make everyone. It's not just you know,
- 47:50Speaker 5: this person that person and we're laughing at that person.
- 47:54Speaker 5: It's okay, we're all laughing together. Great, that's the place
- 47:58Speaker 5: where we want to get to.
- 48:00Speaker 2: The thing that you guys have that you have figured
- 48:04Speaker 2: out so much and so well. Is that, and you
- 48:09Speaker 2: were alluding to this earlier, is that coming into a
- 48:12Speaker 2: school putting on presentations assemblies even a couple of circles
- 48:21Speaker 2: where you're you're sitting with students and maybe faculty in
- 48:26Speaker 2: a circle and talking about some really profound subject matter.
- 48:34Speaker 2: The effectiveness of that has to be sustained beyond when
- 48:41Speaker 2: you guys leave the doors and walk out of that
- 48:45Speaker 2: out of that building, out of that school. And the
- 48:48Speaker 2: fact that you all have figured out that, hey, we
- 48:51Speaker 2: need to start dividing and conquering here. We need to
- 48:56Speaker 2: get Joe over here, we need to get Pat doing this,
- 48:59Speaker 2: and we need to teach these schools and these students
- 49:04Speaker 2: how to carry this message after we have left their doors.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Is really it's it's really the biggest stuff that Sweethearts
- 49:17Speaker 2: and Heroes I think is made of.
- 49:20Speaker 5: So you probably can't see it that well, there's a
- 49:24Speaker 5: picture on my screen of a cracked phone case that
- 49:30Speaker 5: this student came up to me, and it's a it's
- 49:33Speaker 5: at Tykonda Roga. It's at a school that we're in
- 49:35Speaker 5: quite a bit. And I think you know, I've talked
- 49:37Speaker 5: with those students. We're going to get you to tie
- 49:39Speaker 5: to do a podcast at some point this year, JD.
- 49:42Speaker 5: Because there's a plenty of students that could talk your
- 49:44Speaker 5: ears off for days about you know, the work of
- 49:47Speaker 5: Sweethearts and Heroes and would ask you far more interesting
- 49:50Speaker 5: questions than I even have for you. But I she
- 49:55Speaker 5: this young lady Avery, who's absolutely awesome. She'll come down
- 49:58Speaker 5: choos in our program at Tyler last year. And you know,
- 50:01Speaker 5: now she just comes. She wants to be a photographer
- 50:03Speaker 5: when she grows up, and she's awesome at it, and
- 50:06Speaker 5: she'll do our picture taking for whenever we do our
- 50:08Speaker 5: Bully Rails down at the elementary school and our Brave
- 50:11Speaker 5: program down there. But she came up to me and
- 50:13Speaker 5: she was like, hey, I have a list of questions
- 50:15Speaker 5: on my phone and I'm like, well, for circle, and
- 50:17Speaker 5: she's like, yeah, we do a circle with just our
- 50:20Speaker 5: friends when we're hanging out on the weekend. We'll just
- 50:24Speaker 5: we'll just do circles. And these are some of the questions.
- 50:26Speaker 5: And you know, as I combed through it, I used
- 50:28Speaker 5: them the rest of the week.
- 50:29Speaker 4: Like these kids were sitting around in a circle at
- 50:31Speaker 4: home talking about do you think there are good and
- 50:34Speaker 4: bad people? Question mark? Can people change? Question Mark? What's
- 50:40Speaker 4: a challenge you're facing right now that people can't see
- 50:43Speaker 4: from the outside. This one's one of my favorite ones, JD.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Not in a romantic way, but who do you think
- 50:49Speaker 4: would be a great father slash mother for your children?
- 50:53Speaker 5: Like so just like who's going to be a great
- 50:55Speaker 5: parent someday? And you know, these questions are conversations. There
- 51:00Speaker 5: are teenagers discussing, listening to each other, making eye contact
- 51:05Speaker 5: at the very simplest level. I know some schools ready
- 51:07Speaker 5: to go to we can't even get them to look.
- 51:09Speaker 4: At each other.
- 51:09Speaker 5: Yeah, And you know, these are young people that are
- 51:12Speaker 5: sitting around actively listening as they have deep, thoughtful conversation
- 51:17Speaker 5: about who they are, what they want to be, and
- 51:19Speaker 5: what they struggle with, and they're being open about those things.
- 51:23Speaker 4: Those are people that when they get to their.
- 51:25Speaker 5: Twenties, when they get to their thirties and so on
- 51:28Speaker 5: and so forth, those are the people that when they
- 51:30Speaker 5: are people struggling in their families and their communities, they're
- 51:34Speaker 5: going to be the ones that jump into action and
- 51:38Speaker 5: change those people's lives, which is the goal from the
- 51:40Speaker 5: outset of Sweethearts and Heroes when it started as just
- 51:43Speaker 5: a simple little bullying presentation way back in the day.
- 51:49Speaker 2: The one circle that I did up at Peru, I
- 51:58Speaker 2: didn't know the rules going in that there's no follow
- 52:03Speaker 2: up questions, there's there's there's no questions when there's only
- 52:09Speaker 2: one person at a time that's speaking and the rest
- 52:13Speaker 2: of you are listening. And that was so difficult for
- 52:17Speaker 2: me because I've got a million follow up questions. It
- 52:20Speaker 2: was like very difficult for me to just sit there
- 52:26Speaker 2: and and have to be forced to listen. Man.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Wow, And and you know Leon pretty well, he actually
- 52:33Speaker 4: I got.
- 52:33Speaker 5: Him to participate in one of these activities and he
- 52:36Speaker 5: thrived at it. Yeah, he's like he's like circles no ready,
- 52:43Speaker 5: So he's like you in that his brain is constantly
- 52:46Speaker 5: operating on Oh, I'm curious about this next right, which
- 52:50Speaker 5: we don't want to get rid of that.
- 52:51Speaker 4: That's a great thing to have.
- 52:52Speaker 5: One of the things that I've done in some schools
- 52:55Speaker 5: because if I'm going into a school or a building
- 52:58Speaker 5: and an organization, whatever it might be, and I'm asking
- 53:01Speaker 5: a question for circle, well, I've talked with fifth graders
- 53:05Speaker 5: about this, sixth graders about this and said, hey, your
- 53:09Speaker 5: question of who's the best quarterback in the NFL? I
- 53:14Speaker 5: love that question. It's a great question. But there's ten
- 53:16Speaker 5: people in the circle that don't watch the NFL. So
- 53:20Speaker 5: I still don't think it's a bad question. It's just
- 53:23Speaker 5: not the right context for it. We got to make
- 53:25Speaker 5: a question that fits for everybody.
- 53:27Speaker 2: And definitely not the apex question.
- 53:30Speaker 5: And I've had those students that do the you know, oh,
- 53:33Speaker 5: what's your favorite makeup brand?
- 53:35Speaker 4: What's your favorite thing to play with it on fortnite?
- 53:38Speaker 5: All these questions that you cannot tell this young person
- 53:42Speaker 5: it's not a good question, because it is, and it
- 53:44Speaker 5: could be the apex question in a.
- 53:46Speaker 4: Group of people that are interested in that.
- 53:49Speaker 5: If I got a Lord of the Rings question, and
- 53:51Speaker 5: I'm at a Lord of the Rings convention, that's really great,
- 53:55Speaker 5: but it's not elsewhere because there's.
- 53:58Speaker 4: Going to be people in that.
- 54:00Speaker 5: So you almost have to go more broad, especially someone
- 54:03Speaker 5: as an outsider coming into a district that doesn't know
- 54:05Speaker 5: everyone so well. I got to rely on things that
- 54:08Speaker 5: I know to be true as a human that most
- 54:10Speaker 5: people can connect.
- 54:11Speaker 4: On in some way shape.
- 54:13Speaker 5: But I want to encourage those students to ask those
- 54:17Speaker 5: types of more specific questions because they are great questions.
- 54:20Speaker 5: So what we've been doing quite a bit of in
- 54:22Speaker 5: some of these schools where I have more time to
- 54:24Speaker 5: actually be there are what I call a reverse circle.
- 54:28Speaker 4: And a reverse circle is pretty much what you think
- 54:32Speaker 4: it is.
- 54:33Speaker 5: Instead of the facilitator being the person that asks a
- 54:37Speaker 5: question for everybody, and it goes around and every single
- 54:40Speaker 5: person answers what I like to do is say, okay,
- 54:43Speaker 5: that person in the facilitating role, here's your answering piece,
- 54:47Speaker 5: and we're going to pass around a question piece and
- 54:50Speaker 5: everybody's going to ask you a question. So one person
- 54:53Speaker 5: asks you a question, than the next person, than the
- 54:55Speaker 5: next person, and you answer all of them as it
- 54:58Speaker 5: goes on.
- 54:59Speaker 4: And what you'll find is students.
- 55:01Speaker 5: Know how to ask those follow up questions quite a bit,
- 55:04Speaker 5: those questions that you have in your mind. They are
- 55:07Speaker 5: better at those than they are at questions for everybody
- 55:11Speaker 5: because they've never had to ask a question for thirty people.
- 55:14Speaker 5: It's not and they're not trained for that. They've never
- 55:17Speaker 5: learned how to do that. What they've learned how.
- 55:19Speaker 4: To do is ask questions specifically to friends and conversations
- 55:23Speaker 4: in the cafeteria right and conversations on the bus. So
- 55:26Speaker 4: they are very very adequate at asking great questions. But
- 55:30Speaker 4: it's just not necessarily going to fit for everybody. So
- 55:33Speaker 4: let's utilize those strengths. And Leon was amazing at it
- 55:36Speaker 4: because he'd be the sixth in the order and after
- 55:38Speaker 4: the first five questions, it get to him and he'd go, Okay,
- 55:44Speaker 4: based on what I've learned from these five answers. My
- 55:47Speaker 4: question is now going to be this, And you'll get
- 55:50Speaker 4: some students that, no matter what, are just going to go,
- 55:53Speaker 4: what's your favorite movie because that's what they want.
- 55:55Speaker 5: To talk about and that's what they're interested in learning.
- 55:57Speaker 5: And that's fine, but it really gets to to practice
- 56:01Speaker 5: having questions and following their curiosity based on their interactions
- 56:06Speaker 5: with other people and connecting more. And I always say, hey, look,
- 56:10Speaker 5: if your best friend in the entire world is in
- 56:12Speaker 5: the circle and you're like, well, I don't have any
- 56:14Speaker 5: questions for them, I know everything, that's just not true.
- 56:17Speaker 5: You have better questions for the people you know better.
- 56:20Speaker 5: I know that you have a daughter.
- 56:24Speaker 4: Now for my knowledge that you have a daughter, I
- 56:27Speaker 4: can ask you questions about that.
- 56:29Speaker 5: If I didn't know you have a daughter, I could
- 56:31Speaker 5: not ask you questions about that. And that's just one thing, right,
- 56:35Speaker 5: it expands into all these different interests likes. You know,
- 56:39Speaker 5: if I know that this kid plays football and baseball
- 56:42Speaker 5: and those are the two most important things in the world, Okay,
- 56:45Speaker 5: you have to give one up?
- 56:46Speaker 4: Which one are you quitting? Dude?
- 56:48Speaker 5: Like, that's a that's a question that I need to
- 56:51Speaker 5: know those basic pieces of information in order to ask it.
- 56:55Speaker 5: So getting them asking great questions I think stems from
- 56:59Speaker 5: acknowledging the fact that they already can ask great questions.
- 57:03Speaker 5: Let's build on them.
- 57:05Speaker 2: This is fascinating stuff, man, And you know you've taught
- 57:11Speaker 2: us since so is tom circle is something that goes
- 57:14Speaker 2: back how far man like?
- 57:20Speaker 5: So you know the anthropological evidence as hundreds of thousands
- 57:24Speaker 5: of years right, just based on the fact that human beings,
- 57:28Speaker 5: it's known we sat around fires, you know, and we
- 57:31Speaker 5: got to this point where we started having conversations and
- 57:34Speaker 5: the large amount of the time was spent around fires.
- 57:37Speaker 5: And you know, that's where storytelling took place, That's where
- 57:41Speaker 5: lessons were taught, that's where things were learned, that's where
- 57:44Speaker 5: communication developed, and that's what made us as a species
- 57:48Speaker 5: the most dominant species on earth is because we learned
- 57:51Speaker 5: how to communicate with each other so effectively. We were
- 57:54Speaker 5: not the strongest animals in the animal kingdom, we were
- 57:57Speaker 5: not the fastest, but we work together. And when we
- 58:02Speaker 5: were hunting down that you know giant beast, well, okay,
- 58:05Speaker 5: you go on the right side. I'm going to go
- 58:07Speaker 5: on the left side, and we're going to run for
- 58:09Speaker 5: days and this thing can only go for so long.
- 58:12Speaker 5: But if we just keep pestering it and keep working together,
- 58:15Speaker 5: we're going to take this thing.
- 58:16Speaker 2: Down and we'll both benefit, and we'll.
- 58:18Speaker 5: Both benefit and we'll grow from them. Right, And there
- 58:22Speaker 5: are all sorts of things that we learned as human beings. Hey,
- 58:28Speaker 5: I'm going to survive much better if I work with
- 58:30Speaker 5: this group. The last thing that you want to do
- 58:33Speaker 5: is be excluded from the group, because you won't survive.
- 58:36Speaker 5: Now you wonder why when you have a middle schooler
- 58:39Speaker 5: who is going through some really difficult things and is
- 58:42Speaker 5: being excluded. They're not fearful, but they're being excluded from
- 58:47Speaker 5: their inner group, and their parent comes to you know,
- 58:50Speaker 5: their counselor us says, hey, my kid is being bullied. Well,
- 58:56Speaker 5: you know, they're not afraid, so they're not being fullied yet,
- 59:01Speaker 5: but that doesn't mean they're not going through some they're
- 59:03Speaker 5: being excluded.
- 59:04Speaker 4: That's a really.
- 59:05Speaker 5: Difficult thing to have to deal with as a young person,
- 59:07Speaker 5: especially at some of these smaller schools, where as you
- 59:10Speaker 5: get excluded, it's really tough to go hop to another
- 59:13Speaker 5: inner group and find it because.
- 59:14Speaker 4: There isn't another intergroup.
- 59:15Speaker 5: So you have to, you know, find your way to
- 59:17Speaker 5: venture back into that path and all of this stuff
- 59:20Speaker 5: that we're working on. These you know, basic human skills
- 59:24Speaker 5: that are now all of a sudden everybody wants to
- 59:27Speaker 5: learn them from a textbook or learn them from this
- 59:30Speaker 5: you know software. Well, yeah, we can utilize some of
- 59:33Speaker 5: those things, but at its core level, even though Sweethearts
- 59:36Speaker 5: and Heroes has all of these online programming options, at
- 59:41Speaker 5: our core, we're never going to get away from the
- 59:44Speaker 5: number one thing that can be done for creating peer
- 59:47Speaker 5: networks for young people is having conversations.
- 59:50Speaker 4: So we have those conversations and we get them to.
- 59:55Speaker 2: You know, I was going to say, Tom is so
- 59:58Speaker 2: lucky to have all of you on his team, but really,
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: you're all so lucky to have each other equally. Man,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: it's you guys are just you're all dialed in. You
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: all get it. You'll all bring something different to the table.
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: And man, Sweethearts and Heroes, something that started in Vermont
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: has has now grown to a regional thing, and even
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: beyond regional. I mean, you guys, I don't know how
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: many schools you've been into and in the last year
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: maybe you know that number. Do you know a lot?
- 1:00:39Speaker 5: So here's the thing I would say, actually, if you
- 1:00:43Speaker 5: looked at our our you know, the peak numbers of
- 1:00:46Speaker 5: what Sweethearts and Heroes was doing. As far as the
- 1:00:49Speaker 5: schools that they've been into, that would be pre Patfish,
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: pre anybody on me. When it was just Tom and
- 1:00:56Speaker 5: Rick living together on the road and the you know
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: two and tens era, when you know I was in
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: high school and you know Tom and Rick were working
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: hard just Monday through Friday, spending every single day together
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: and driving.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: Each other nuts. That was the most schools that they
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: had been into for sure.
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: You know, it'd be one school present the next day,
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: go to a school present, the next day, go to
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: a school present. But as far as the impact that
- 1:01:22Speaker 5: we have, we've been in less schools recently. What we've
- 1:01:27Speaker 5: done is we've focused on those schools that want to
- 1:01:30Speaker 5: bring us in to utilize our programming and said, okay,
- 1:01:33Speaker 5: these are where we can actually make the biggest impact.
- 1:01:37Speaker 5: And because of that, we've put all of this focus
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: on our Community Ambassador program, our Brave Program, our Step program,
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: all of these different things that we have that you know,
- 1:01:49Speaker 5: you go to Peru and Peru I have a few
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: visits this year, but compared to when I first joined
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: the team.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: I was in Peru NonStop.
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: But we've been in Peru so much that we feel
- 1:01:59Speaker 5: as though there are at a place now where you know,
- 1:02:02Speaker 5: they can keep this thing going. We'll come in and
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: we'll sprinkle some new ideas and I'll come in and make.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: Everything go crazy for a couple of days.
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: But they have a pretty strong system going there, So
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: let's go build it somewhere else. Let's go build this
- 1:02:17Speaker 5: programming and continue to reinvent ourselves and change it so
- 1:02:21Speaker 5: that we can have the biggest impact. The amount of
- 1:02:23Speaker 5: schools to us, you know, I think it's it's awesome.
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: It's a great number to look at.
- 1:02:30Speaker 5: But what it comes down to is, you know, we
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: can go to a school and present one time and
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: you leave. And if you taught me something one time
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: in high school, JD, good luck with me remembering that
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: at the end of the year. I probably wasn't paying
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: attention that one time. Tom and Rick came to my
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: middle school and presented. I don't know if I was
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: even there. I didn't like, I couldn't tell you anything
- 1:02:56Speaker 5: about it. If I was, maybe the presentation just got
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: a whole lot better. But I like to think I
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: would have remembered then. So while the presentation is absolutely amazing,
- 1:03:08Speaker 5: it is the thing that starts the.
- 1:03:12Speaker 4: Fire, right. It is that match, It is that light
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: or whatever you want it to be.
- 1:03:17Speaker 5: So now we got this fire going, but we got
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: to keep throwing wood on this thing to keep it moving.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: And you want to spread hope, you can't just say Okay,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: here's your hope. Good luck. Yeah, that you know might have.
- 1:03:29Speaker 5: That impact on a handful of students, and it did
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: in the twenty tens. You could ask Tom, you could
- 1:03:34Speaker 5: ask Rick. There were all of these students that benefited
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: so strongly. It changed and saved lives. I'm absolutely sure
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: of it. But when it comes to the programming piece
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: of what Sweethearts and Hero does, it's making sure that
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: those buildings that we are in we spend more and
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: more time in so that we can continue to change
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: and save lives in the best way that we know how,
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: which is showing up and being there and listening.
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: Bro let's throw some some love before we close out
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: this morning to Alderman, Chevrolet, Littleton, Chevrolet, Cody, Chevrolet, all
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: the Chevy dealers, Welch River.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: Let's show some gratitude. It's Thanksgiving, Jody.
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: Yeah, man, Yes, these these dealerships, these Chevy dealerships, embrace
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: so much what you guys are doing and saying, hey,
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: we're going to do everything we can to make sure
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: they're getting into as many schools as possible.
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: You know, I was, I wasn't in Vermont one time,
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: this a couple of years ago, and I was, you know,
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: heading to a school and that you know, you go
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: to Vermont and every once in a while you're wearing
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: the free Hug shirt and because of that, somebody remembers
- 1:04:54Speaker 5: you from you know, whether it's the early days of
- 1:04:56Speaker 5: sweetet As the Heroes, when it was back when Tom
- 1:04:59Speaker 5: owned a restaurant, when it was that, whatever it might be.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: You see that free Hug shirt and you're like, oh,
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: I remember that. I know that. And uh.
- 1:05:06Speaker 5: I had this this guy that was at this coffee
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: shop and he was like, well, you know, do you
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: work for uh do you work for the free Hugs
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: thing like Sweethearts and Heroes? And he's like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: that thing. He's like that. You know, that guy just
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: goes around and you know tries to, you know, look
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: all high and mighty, because you know, he just wants
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: to but like you get paid for that. You you know,
- 1:05:31Speaker 5: the schools pay you to come in, so you're really
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: just doing it for money, You're not doing And I said, okay,
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: and I listened, and I, you know, I'm not going
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: to start an argument with anybody in a coffee shop.
- 1:05:41Speaker 4: That doesn't really you.
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: Know, that doesn't really seem like the best spot to uh,
- 1:05:46Speaker 5: you know, seven o'clock in the morning, just getting really
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: fired up about something. And so I just listened, and
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: at the end of it, I kind of looked at
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: the guy and I said, you know, uh, we need
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: to travel to the schools, and we need to show
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: up at the building, and we probably because of that,
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: have to stay somewhere overnight, and we probably because of
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: that need to eat something to food. All of this
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: stuff like seems like it might you know, matter And
- 1:06:20Speaker 5: by no.
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: Means, did you mention gasoline?
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: Did I mentioned gasoline?
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:06:25Speaker 5: And look, when I joined the team, I you know,
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: I went to school for my.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: Masters was an organizational psychology.
- 1:06:37Speaker 5: And you know, as I look at, you know, my
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: degree and what I could go off and.
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: Do with my degree, there's a whole lot of businesses.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: There's a whole lot of HR departments.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: There's a whole lot of places where masters in organizational
- 1:06:52Speaker 5: psychology and experience working in a whole bunch of different
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: buildings could probably bode me pretty well. But I'm going
- 1:06:59Speaker 5: to work for Sweethearts and Heroes because this is an
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: organization that cares and does things for people, and we're
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: only able to do that if we have the funding
- 1:07:09Speaker 5: necessary to get into buildings. And let's be honest, there's
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: a lot of schools out there that are struggling when
- 1:07:16Speaker 5: it comes to money, when it comes to their finances.
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: And to ask one of those schools, hey, you know,
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: we want to bring in a brave program. It really
- 1:07:25Speaker 5: help your young people, and they're yeah, but you know,
- 1:07:28Speaker 5: we have this teacher whose family lives in our community
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: and we just cut their job. It's probably not going
- 1:07:34Speaker 5: to look so great to bring in this, you know,
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: organization that we're paying all this money for.
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: Yeah, we can't.
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: So having those outside fundings that you know, are putting
- 1:07:44Speaker 5: their their hard earned dollars into the young people of Verman,
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: of New York of the places where we go, is
- 1:07:55Speaker 5: something that is I can't express gratitude enough for because look,
- 1:08:01Speaker 5: a lot of a lot of people out there are
- 1:08:03Speaker 5: struggling right now.
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: It's just the truth.
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: And you know, it's really tough to go and say, yeah,
- 1:08:08Speaker 5: you know, we want to spread hope to all of you.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: We got to be.
- 1:08:13Speaker 5: Able to get there though, and you know, if you're
- 1:08:15Speaker 5: struggling on your income, it's a that's a hard sell.
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: So what Chevy has.
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: Done for us is allowed us to spread our message
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: of hope in schools and in young people that would
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: not have seen our message if that wasn't the case.
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: And that's a really amazing thing that they should be
- 1:08:33Speaker 5: they should be proud of and we are all extremely
- 1:08:36Speaker 5: grateful for.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: And you know what, if you walk into any Chevy
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: dealer or you know someone that works at one, just
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: thank them. Say hey, we saw pat Fish on the
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: Aired Out podcast the other day. Sweethearts and heroes. Thank
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: you for for supporting them so much and allowing them
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: to get to infiltrate into into so many schools. Just
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: thank them.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I want to ask you something real quick before
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: I know, I know we've been going on for ages
- 1:09:13Speaker 5: as we usually do when we get together.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: Oh, I want to ask you something too.
- 1:09:17Speaker 4: What's your Thanksgiving looking like? Man?
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: Talk to me because Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday in
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: the entire world, So I'm always curious what other people do.
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: On this I will be I do you know, someday
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: you'll get there because you're so You're so young right now, Pat,
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: but at some point in your life, you will be
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: purchasing a pair of pants with an elastic waistband. It's
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: going to happen at some point. I do have a
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: pair of those. I don't necessarily wear them proudly in public,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: but I will be wearing them on Thanksgiving. We're gonna
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: be with some friends and we're gonna do like a
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: friends giving thing, and there's gonna be tens of thousands
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: of kids running around and and uh rollerblading around the
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: inside of the house. But we're gonna have a great
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: time and we're gonna be surrounded by love, and uh
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: that's that's more important to me than what kind of
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: food is going to be served up. Maybe maybe with
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: the exception of the deviled eggs, but we're gonna have
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: a awesome We're just gonna have a good time. We're
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: just gonna sit and relax. We're gonna watch some football,
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: and I'm gonna I'm gonna pass some gas and with
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: my elastic waist pants and I'm just gonna have a
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: good time.
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: But it's the best holiday in the world, you know.
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: Is it was uh initially put into place as a
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: national holiday by Abraham Lincoln in the midst of the
- 1:10:52Speaker 5: Civil War era. So it was divided as our country
- 1:10:56Speaker 5: ever was. You can argue that, but that's just the truth.
- 1:10:58Speaker 5: We were literally at war with each other. Yeah, as
- 1:11:00Speaker 5: divided as our country ever was. And there was a
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: there's a.
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: Woman who strongly, strongly pushed for it.
- 1:11:08Speaker 5: For about ten years beforehand, and finally it got passed
- 1:11:12Speaker 5: as a way to say, hey, you know, during this
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: time of strife, during this time of division, we should
- 1:11:19Speaker 5: be able to come together and you know, talk about
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: the things that we are grateful for, talk about that
- 1:11:24Speaker 5: love and and you know, just just spend time with
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: one Yeah. So it's a great day and I think,
- 1:11:31Speaker 5: you know, a great purpose as well.
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: You know, I'm thankful to be alive, and I'm thankful
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: to be surrounded by my family and some friends. I
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: think more than anything else regardless, again, if there's any
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: food on the table, just to be together with people
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: that care about you and that you love That's that's
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: what I'm thankful for. Man, I gotta ask you green
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: bean cast role from petfish.
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: So so I've been talking to you know, first of all,
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: kids here, Thanksgiving is your favorite hotday. And they're like
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: most kids, especially you get to that younger level Christmas, Halloween,
- 1:12:16Speaker 5: you know, can or whatever that they're like Thanksgiving huh.
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: But you know, I've been having quite a few conversations
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: with young people about, you know, what's.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: The favorite dish.
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: We even did one kid ask food fight starts at
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: the at the Thanksgiving table, what are you grabbing? Like,
- 1:12:31Speaker 5: are you grabbing the turkey to throw? Orre you grabbing porn?
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: Or you grabbing mashed potato? But when it comes to
- 1:12:36Speaker 5: my favorite dish, it Thanksgiving j D. I am whatever
- 1:12:41Speaker 5: is on that table grabbing a piece of bag rout
- 1:12:44Speaker 5: and it's just getting mixed into one big giant pincoction.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: So yeah, there's green bean cast role in the mixed grain.
- 1:12:51Speaker 5: If there's stuff, he's got to be stuffing in the mix,
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: gott to be mashed potatoes in the mix. But all
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: of it is just it's going into one place. Yes,
- 1:13:00Speaker 5: we'll start that mixing early. That's my mindset. When I
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: go into it, I have some people that are mortified
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: as I say, the food's touching and it's all going
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: to the same spot. Yeah, and you know, after a
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: long day of in the morning. I've since since my
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: dad was a kid. Actually my hometown it's and it's
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: really kind of neat because it's not sponsored or anything
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: like that, but it's been There's a group of like
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: twenty people. They get together and you know, play football
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: in the morning and we just throw a football around
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: and run around. And I've been doing it since I
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: was a kid. And now you know, some of the
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: older guys that used to play in it just watch
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: on the sides as we run around and have fun.
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: But so I'll get nice and tired.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Because they blew out their meniscus a couple of years
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: ago on that Thanksgiving Day. That's why they're standing around.
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: But oh man, I'll never forget the year where my
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: dad switched from being you know, he was the all
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: time quarterback on one team and there was a couple
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: of years where we were both.
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: Quarterback going again. That was fun.
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: But then then I'll never forget at one year he
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: just became all time center and he just kind of
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: hikes the ball and doesn't block anybody, and he takes
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: the ball nice, but he goes, I'm gonna be it
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: for both teams, and he still whole participate a little bit,
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: he'll hike it, which is really kind of great. But yeah,
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: that's that is kind of as as it happens. Everybody's
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: got that career ending injury. I think my uh, my
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: uncle Steven is the longest going, and I think that's
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: a piece. He's a third grade elementary teacher. So they
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: keep them, they keep them working. He's a big hiker,
- 1:14:29Speaker 5: so you know he's still going. He's had his injuries
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: here and there, but over you're ending it. Everybody's got
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: their career ending injury.
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: Whatever.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Well, listen and we find out who the real football
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: players are in the backyard on Thanksgiving when it starts
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: to rain or it starts to snow a little bit.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: There's a percentage that are like, dude, I'm going in
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: man the game, son. Uh. The others that are that
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: are staying behind and getting a little muddy and frankly ugly,
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: those that's the real lifeblood of Thanksgiving right there. It's
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: those people.
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: That's what I I got my practice in that polar plunge.
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: I went swimming in Lake George last weekend, so I'm so,
- 1:15:15Speaker 5: you know, I'm ready for the cold whatever whatever mother
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: nature brings at us.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: I'm showing up. I'm playing. You know. You know it's
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: two hand touched. But you throw on the free hug shirt.
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: Maybe you can get away with a little bit more
- 1:15:27Speaker 5: of a tackle exactly. Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: But before we before we head out this morning, a
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: question in a comment question, we're talking about poking fun
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: at others and stuff. Tom, do you think the biceps
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: are implants? Yes?
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: Or no?
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: Do I think that? No?
- 1:15:54Speaker 5: I absolutely do not think that's the case. I really know,
- 1:15:59Speaker 5: but I will say I do so, so you want
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: to know what they are the cause of. And this
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: is almost worse, Jadu.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: They are.
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: Holiday inns across America have experienced this where you know,
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: have these little tiny gems, right, Yeah, and there's some
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: cute little old lady walking on the treadmill watching whatever
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: she's watching. And you know, maybe one guy, Oprah, maybe
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: one guy's on the you know, on the bicycle. And
- 1:16:26Speaker 5: you know, I've seen it before. I've walked in and
- 1:16:29Speaker 5: I've walked in seen Tom in the gym and turned
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: around him then like I'll go later. Yeah, because this
- 1:16:34Speaker 5: one guy, it's on the treadmill right next to the
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: sweet old lady who is he's got it on, you know,
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: full incline and he's walking taking his little breaks, but
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: in between those breaks he is doing one hundred sets
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: of burpie pull up shoulder rays down to burpie pull
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: up shoulder rays with like fifties in his hands because
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: that's as high as it goes, and just getting sweat
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: every where and grunting and making loud noises and making
- 1:17:03Speaker 5: everyone in the room uncomfortable. So that's that's one hundred
- 1:17:06Speaker 5: percent what it what it's from, you know.
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: And they're not implants them, they are not implants.
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: They are they are hard earned biceps to to the
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: discomfort of old ladies and holiday ins everywhere. Which again,
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: that's that that I think is kind of awesome in
- 1:17:26Speaker 5: its own way. And you know, we we've been doing
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: everyone here at sweet not everyone at Sweetheart's and Euros,
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: but a decent amount of us have been doing three
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: hundred and thirty three push ups a day for all
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: of November.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Yeah, man, Tom was telling me about that Holy.
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: Crap I texted him.
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: I was like, dude, you picked bulking season to do
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: three hundred and thirty. I'm trying to get bigger, so
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: you know, when Tom's walking down the presentation in a walker,
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: somebody can.
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: At least have some decent biceps.
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: And instead we're doing three hundred and thirty three push
- 1:17:56Speaker 5: ups a day, and I think I've I've lost more
- 1:17:58Speaker 5: weight than anything.
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: Listen, I don't need to be.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Doing I just had my surgical consult yesterday and got
- 1:18:05Speaker 2: the date on the calendar for my complete shoulder replacement.
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: And Tom has asked me how many push ups are
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: you doing? JD. And I'm like, Tom, I couldn't do
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: one push up for a thousand bucks, bro. And He's said, well,
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: can't you just do it with one hand? You know
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about.
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: Pat, Yeah, Yeah, I I love it because I am
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: a When I joined the team, I saw, you know,
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: Tom and Rick to me, were the perfect balance of
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: yin and y You had this one. Yeah, if he
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: was not your cup of tea. At a school, which
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: I've seen it before, there's teachers that are a little
- 1:18:48Speaker 5: bit put off by the energy, by the excitement that
- 1:18:51Speaker 5: Tom brings and you know, maybe it's a piece of
- 1:18:54Speaker 5: that has more to do with them than it has
- 1:18:56Speaker 5: to do with Tom. And you know that's that's a
- 1:18:57Speaker 5: whole other conversation. But if you get put off by
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: that high energy, high gung ho, like in your face
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: style that Tom has, Rick is the perfect counterpart part
- 1:19:09Speaker 5: of Like, yeah.
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: It's true, we could talk football if you want to
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: talk football, yea.
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: And I when I joined the team, I was like,
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: I fit somewhere in the middle of that. Sure, I
- 1:19:20Speaker 5: do have an intensity about me, but I also, you know,
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: can rewind it a little bit and you know, chill
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: out a little bit too. So I love working for
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: sweethearts and heroes in this, you know, in the way
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: that we have it because everybody is comfortable in being themselves. Yes,
- 1:19:40Speaker 5: we can give you know, we can give hard times
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: here and there, and we can you know, poke fun.
- 1:19:44Speaker 5: But I've always said, we're we're going a million miles
- 1:19:48Speaker 5: per hour in a direction. We never exactly know the
- 1:19:52Speaker 5: exact direction we're going in, but it's a million miles
- 1:19:55Speaker 5: per hour and I can work with that.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: It's fun.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: No, didn't you just get me married?
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: I got married in July.
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: All right, who just got married just recently on the team,
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: didn't somebody? Or maybe it's you that.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: I'm thinking, Yeah, I'm the most recent marriage and heroes.
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: Yeah, everybody else I think is married already.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: Yeah, did I did I see a picture of you
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: wearing a pink suit?
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: Yes?
- 1:20:29Speaker 5: Okay, yep, so that was at that was at a
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: friend's wedding actually, and JD, I gotta be honest with
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: not the pink suit but the white shirt underneath.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:40Speaker 5: So I go out and you know, I'm doing my
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: three hundred and thirty three push ups a day.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Shoulder they're getting a little.
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: Bit bigger, maybe, And so I go out and within
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: a couple.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Of minutes on the dance floor, yeah, rip all the
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: way from right here to right here.
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: Wait a minute, the pink suit or the shirt a shirt?
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: Luckily I had the pink suit over on the side,
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: but my entire shirt was just like y.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: And then of course, you know you're with.
- 1:21:08Speaker 5: Your friends from college, and you know they're coming up
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: behind me and like ripping it more or tickle in
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: my arm.
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: But yeah, so that that.
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: Was probably five minutes before my shirt was like hanging
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: by a thread.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: Ring.
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Wow. I those are some obviously some very serious dance
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: moves which I would love to know which one blew
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: out the shirt. But Tom, I'm guessing was maybe. I
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: don't know if he was there, but he's got to
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: be a little jealous of another guy who can get
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: away with wearing a pink suit. Not everybody can do that, Pat.
- 1:21:46Speaker 5: So Tom, Yeah, Tom's the originator of the pink You
- 1:21:51Speaker 5: know that was definitely a little.
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: Bit Tom inspired.
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: But I will say Tom, Tom cannot touch my stuff
- 1:21:58Speaker 5: when it comes to the pink sh shoes I got.
- 1:22:01Speaker 5: I understand, I've been around Sweethearts and Earros for long
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: enough and bought a new pair of pink shoes that
- 1:22:08Speaker 5: I have a different pair that I could wear Monday
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: through Friday. Whether it comes to Patrick star ones. I
- 1:22:15Speaker 5: got my pink flowery ones. I even got like winter
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: boots that are that are pink and fuzzy stop. We
- 1:22:21Speaker 5: could go across the board. And I got pink shoes
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: for every single day. And uh, you know Tom is
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: Internet savvy. As Tom is, he hasn't quite figured out
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: the internet shoe market, so he's he's not there yet
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: when it comes to the pink shoes.
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: Now, when you wore the pink suit, did you have
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: the painted fingernails at the same time?
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: I did? I did.
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: And you know, that's just good question. I'm just, you know,
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: just asking. I'm not implying anything. I'm just I'm just
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: asking if you were really able to get away with that.
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: I especially at you know, the wedding with the college
- 1:23:01Speaker 5: friends that you know I have, even though it was
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: a it was a close friend. Obviously you don't know
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: the family members. You don't know the other side, Like
- 1:23:11Speaker 5: I know her husband, but I don't really know his family,
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: their friends, any of that thing. But you immediately walk
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: in to a room with the pink suit and your
- 1:23:21Speaker 5: fingernails painted.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's there's people that are saying, what the
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: hell's going on around here?
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: One hund I think that exists in this world, But
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: who is this guy? It is way more oddly enough,
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: like you'll get it in first grade where they're like
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: really confused about it, and you're like, then you go
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: out at recess and you play basketball and they're like, oh,
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: I want to paint my fingernails.
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: Yes, and play basketball aggressively at.
- 1:23:57Speaker 4: An older level. And I say this to high school
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: all the time.
- 1:24:02Speaker 5: We have a fear of vulnerability humans do and making ourselves,
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: you know, making ourselves weak, making ourselves, you know, lesser
- 1:24:13Speaker 5: than That's what we, you know, think of vulnerability as.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: But truly it's a it's a superpower. And I had
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: a group just this week where I asked the question,
- 1:24:24Speaker 5: what was your first ever childhood crush, like when you
- 1:24:29Speaker 5: were little, like that goofy one right that you know
- 1:24:32Speaker 5: Tom's is I'll tell you right now. Tom's is Princess Leah,
- 1:24:36Speaker 5: and Rix is Punky Brewster or something like that, poor yeah,
- 1:24:44Speaker 5: and mine is mine Selena Gomez Wizards of Waverley Place,
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: or you could go back even further and go Meg
- 1:24:50Speaker 5: from the movie Hercules, the cartoon movie there. But you
- 1:24:55Speaker 5: asked a question like that to a bunch of kids,
- 1:24:58Speaker 5: and even though it's not the crush right now, it's
- 1:25:01Speaker 5: talking about in the past or like, and then you
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: get this one kid who steps up and goes, my
- 1:25:08Speaker 5: crush wash the bread from Scooby.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: Doo passed it on.
- 1:25:15Speaker 5: And then you get another student because oh Flinn Ryder
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: from Kangled, they pass it on. And then you get
- 1:25:22Speaker 5: the you know, the student that one time I had
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: a girl go it's like Nae McQueen and passed it on.
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: And I get to the end of that and I
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: always look at the group afterwards and I go, what.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Do you think the point of that question was?
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: Yeah, let's sit around and well it's they say the
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: number one reason that young people don't jump into action
- 1:25:41Speaker 5: when they see somebody being treated the wrong way is
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: that they're afraid to look silly or ridiculous. I got
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: leaders for you to JD. That's not young people, that's all.
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: People were afraid to look silly or ridiculous.
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: But someone does it.
- 1:25:55Speaker 5: Overwhelmingly, others appreciate that superpower that they have. Yeah, appreciate
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: that uniqueness that they have because they're willing to put
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: themselves out there and open themselves up to.
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: Attack because they're a superhero.
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: And the more that we as a society can celebrate that,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: the better. You know somebody that's willing to go out
- 1:26:15Speaker 5: there and be themselves. And you know, Taykonder Roga, there's
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: a young man that I will one hundred percent have.
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: We have time.
- 1:26:23Speaker 5: He's he's only a he's not even a senior yet,
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: so we got some time with him. But there's a
- 1:26:27Speaker 5: young man named Carter who he was in my program
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: years ago in ninth grade and now he's still in
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: uh you know, works very closely with the work the
- 1:26:39Speaker 5: Sweethearts and Heroes does. He worked with our step program
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: and he presents to younger students. But Carter had a
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: role in his school play last year that you know,
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: Carter's a young man, he's a you know, he's a
- 1:26:53Speaker 5: straight young man. He's you know, I have girlfriends, he's had,
- 1:26:56Speaker 5: you know, all that stuff. And h Carter in his
- 1:27:00Speaker 5: school play played a flamboyant gay guy.
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: That was his role. JD.
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: I got to tell you, I was a pretty confident
- 1:27:11Speaker 5: young man. I was a pretty fun loving I wasn't
- 1:27:14Speaker 5: afraid to be goofy, wasn't afraid to embarrass myself a
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: little bit. I don't know if I would have had
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: the courage and confidence to go out in the school play, yeah,
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: and play a gay guy. I just and you know,
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: maybe it's a difference in time. You know, maybe it's
- 1:27:31Speaker 5: that fear of and I you know, I had gay
- 1:27:34Speaker 5: friends growing up. But the courage and confidence that is
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: shown by some of today's young people verages one of
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: those examples is absolutely unbelievable. And the more that we
- 1:27:45Speaker 5: can celebrate that is is just something that I think
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: is beneficial to everybody. You shouldn't be afraid to be
- 1:27:55Speaker 5: a little bit goofy. You shouldn't be afraid to be yourself.
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: It's a part of what makes you who you are.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: That's amazing. I love to hear this, man, It's incredible. Listen, man,

- 1:28:50Speaker 5: care about, that you know might not have that person
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: to go to on Thanksgiving. Just just send it. You

- 1:29:02Speaker 5: this is a difficult time for for a lot of
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: people out there. You know, those people that you know,
- 1:29:06Speaker 5: maybe this is their first Thanksgiving without someone they really carry,
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: their first holiday season without that person.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: Know, maybe they just got fired from work.
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: But this is a you know, well, well, it's a
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: great time of year to be thankful and grateful for
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: what we do have. It's also an important time of
- 1:29:21Speaker 5: the year to acknowledge that there's other people out there
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: that need that does to hope.
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: So that's I.
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: Wanted to make sure that I said that at the
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: end here, JD. I'm sorry for interrupting you, but.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: Now, brother, thank you so much. Pat appreciate you.
