Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever walked into work and felt it?
- 0:02That shift in the air?
- 0:03Nothing official happened.
- 0:05Nobody sent an email that said, We're against you now, but you can feel it.
- 0:10The invitations you used to get stop.
- 0:14The tone changes.
- 0:15You hear something secondhand that you know isn't quite true.
- 0:19And suddenly you're working twice as hard just to feel normal.
- 0:22If that's ever happened to you, I want you to know something right up front.
- 0:27You're not crazy and you're not alone.
- 0:30Welcome to Amazing Life Breakthrough.
- 0:33I'm Steve Klein.
- 0:34And today we're talking about what to do when you're being undermined at work, especially when it's subtle and it messes with your confidence.
- 0:43This happened to me during the dot-com era when my career in software engineering was really moving forward.
- 0:49I was thriving.
- 0:50I loved the technology, I was growing, and I had even turned down some management offers because I wanted to stay close to the work I was passionate about.
- 0:59Then a new manager came in.
- 1:01I'll call him Bill.
- 1:03At first I didn't think much of it.
- 1:05Leadership changes happen, but it didn't take long for me to notice something wasn't right.
- 1:11It started small, missed invitations to meetings, whispered rumors, unearned criticisms about my work, and even about my character.
- 1:20The kind of stuff that makes you think, wait, where is this coming from?
- 1:25And then it escalated.
- 1:27Projects got blocked, progress stalled.
- 1:30Not because the work was bad, but because the door in front of me kept quietly closing.
- 1:35Relationships on the team got weird.
- 1:37People who used to be friendly got distant.
- 1:39And you start asking the question that almost everyone asks in that season.
- 1:44Is it me?
- 1:45That's what undermining does.
- 1:47It doesn't just attack your output, it attacks your identity.
- 1:51It makes you doubt what you know is true about yourself.
- 1:54And I want to name something important.
- 1:56This is one of the hardest kinds of pressure to live under, because you can't always prove it quickly.
- 2:02It's not a single moment.
- 2:04It's a pattern.
- 2:05Here's the breakthrough that changed everything for me.
- 2:09When you're being undermined, your job is not to obsess over their motives.
- 2:13Your job is to protect your integrity and regain your options.
- 2:18Because toxic people don't define your worth, but they can steal your peace if you let them.
- 2:24So what did I do?
- 2:26First, I anchored myself in facts.
- 2:29When you're under this kind of pressure, your mind starts spiraling.
- 2:32You replay conversations, you read between lines, you assume the worst.
- 2:37And sometimes the best way to stay steady is to come back to what you can verify.
- 2:41And those things you can verify are what are the actual results I'm producing?
- 2:45What feedback is documented?
- 2:47What have I delivered?
- 2:48What do I know to be true?
- 2:50Facts bring you back to the ground.
- 2:52Second, I stopped trying to win over everyone in the room.
- 2:56This is a hard one because when you feel misunderstood, you want to explain yourself, you want to convince people, you want to set the record straight.
- 3:04But here's what I learned.
- 3:06If someone is committed to misunderstanding you, you can spend endless energy trying to prove yourself.
- 3:13And it won't change them.
- 3:15It will only drain you.
- 3:17So I stayed professional, I stayed excellent, and I saved my emotional energy for something more powerful.
- 3:25Third, I quietly built an exit strategy, not in panic, not in bitterness, but in wisdom.
- 3:31I made a vow, I'm going to control my future, not Bill.
- 3:35So I worked nights and weekends on personal projects while still performing well at work.
- 3:41I built options, I built leverage, I built a path.
- 3:44And here's the wild part.
- 3:46Over time his behavior caught up with him.
- 3:48Other departments noticed, concerns surfaced, and eventually he was let go.
- 3:53But by then, something bigger had already happened inside me.
- 3:56I had stopped living like my future depended on one person's approval.
- 4:00And that shift, right there, is one of the most freeing shifts you can make in your life.
- 4:06So let me give you a simple set of practical moves you can use if you're in this right now.
- 4:11One, document reality.
- 4:14Keep a simple record of wins, deliverables, feedback, and timelines.
- 4:18Not to be petty, just to stay grounded and protected.
- 4:22Two, don't isolate.
- 4:24Find one safe person, mentor, HR, trusted colleague, someone who stays steady and tells the truth.
- 4:31Undermining grows in isolation.
- 4:34It shrinks in the presence of clarity.
- 4:37Now one caveat to this, I mentioned HR, human resources as one place you might go for support, but I want you to go in with some clarity.
- 4:46In most organizations, HR's primary job is to protect the company, especially from risk and liability.
- 4:53That doesn't mean they won't help employees.
- 4:55Sometimes they do.
- 4:57But if the issue involves a manager or it's politically sensitive, HR may focus more on minimizing exposure than on advocating for you.
- 5:05So if you do go to HR, be thoughtful.
- 5:08Document what's happening, stick to facts, avoid emotional storytelling, and be clear about what outcome you want.
- 5:14And just to be clear, this isn't legal advice.
- 5:17I'm sharing from experience.
- 5:19In some situations, even after talking with an attorney, you may find your options are limited, especially if the behavior is subtle, hard to prove, or not explicitly covered by policy.
- 5:30Which now brings me to my next point.
- 5:32Three, build options quietly, update your resume, learn a skill, network gently, start a side project.
- 5:40You don't have to quit tomorrow.
- 5:42You just need to stop feeling trapped.
- 5:45Here's your listener challenge today.
- 5:47If work has been messing with your confidence, write down two lists tonight.
- 5:51Just two.
- 5:53List one, five facts that prove you are competent and valuable.
- 5:57Projects shipped, problem solved, feedback received, results created.
- 6:03Real facts.
- 6:04And for your second list, list two, one next step that increases your options.
- 6:10One, update a resume, reach out to one person, block one hour to learn a skill.
- 6:16Anything that says, my future is not at the mercy of this situation.
- 6:21On Thursday, we're going to go deeper.
- 6:24We'll talk about how to recognize workplace bullying early, what not to do when you are being undermined, and how to leave in strength without losing your integrity or your peace.
- 6:35Now, if you found value in today's episode, would you help us get more amazing life breakthroughs to more people?
- 6:42You can do that by sharing this episode with someone who's been carrying quiet stress of being bullied at work or elsewhere.
