- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show with Jim Moore, targeting, turnovers,
- 0:06Speaker 1: red zone. We're going to get to all of that.
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Merrimack Warriors who opened up with a loss at
- 0:11Speaker 1: air Force twenty one to six, we'll find out about
- 0:13Speaker 1: them as well. But Jim, you have to start the
- 0:18Speaker 1: next game because of targeting without a couple of players.
- 0:23Speaker 1: This has become a kind of a hot button issue
- 0:27Speaker 1: a little bit in football college football. In my mind,
- 0:30Speaker 1: with almost every game, it feels like somebody, not just Yukon,
- 0:35Speaker 1: but anybody's playing is losing players for a half and
- 0:39Speaker 1: the rest of the game because of targeting. I know
- 0:43Speaker 1: you're not going to reinvent the wheel and I try
- 0:46Speaker 1: to do it on the air. Probably not a good
- 0:48Speaker 1: thing to do. But is there anything that can be
- 0:52Speaker 1: looked at in terms of reviewing how this targeting paul
- 0:57Speaker 1: is being made right now in college football?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah? Well, fortunately we're only you know, Jordan's was in
- 1:03Speaker 2: the first half, so he's available the whole game this week.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Durante's was in the second half, so he has to
- 1:08Speaker 2: sit the first half. Yeah, there's things that can be
- 1:11Speaker 2: done now, whether they'll be done or not. I you know,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I'm hesitant to say I think that in today's college football,
- 1:20Speaker 2: with the number of quarterbacks that are big, physical runners
- 1:24Speaker 2: and have decided they want to slide at the last second,
- 1:27Speaker 2: it's really made it difficult for a coach to teach
- 1:30Speaker 2: his defensive players, you know, how to actually enter and
- 1:34Speaker 2: tackle a quarterback. In particular, you know, if you take
- 1:37Speaker 2: the two plays that our guys got removed from the
- 1:40Speaker 2: game for neither quarterback was down when they were hit.
- 1:43Speaker 2: If you slow it down in super slow motion, both
- 1:47Speaker 2: of our guys had a normal target in terms of
- 1:50Speaker 2: the height of the target when they entered the tackle,
- 1:53Speaker 2: and both the quarterbacks lowered their head. It brought their
- 1:57Speaker 2: bodies down to a level that our player was already
- 2:01Speaker 2: at for the targeting. And so it's just and they
- 2:05Speaker 2: slid late. So if our guys, and I'm talking about
- 2:08Speaker 2: I say our guys in say, any defensive player in
- 2:10Speaker 2: the country initially quarter If you don't, if you don't
- 2:14Speaker 2: get ready to tackle a quarterback, they're gonna run over you, right.
- 2:17Speaker 2: So you've got to You've got to get ready to
- 2:20Speaker 2: tackle them. And that means breaking down, and that means
- 2:24Speaker 2: starting to bring your feet and your hips and your
- 2:26Speaker 2: velocity towards them, and when they slide, if they if
- 2:29Speaker 2: they don't slide, they'll run your ass over. If you
- 2:31Speaker 2: don't do those things, and if they do slide, then
- 2:34Speaker 2: you've left yourself vulnerable to a targeting call because they
- 2:37Speaker 2: are lowering the target and they're bringing the target down
- 2:41Speaker 2: to where you've already put your body. So I don't
- 2:45Speaker 2: know that it can be fixed right now, I can
- 2:49Speaker 2: tell you this, uh, And I was around a couple
- 2:51Speaker 2: of pretty good running quarterbacks, Mike Vick and a guy
- 2:54Speaker 2: named Steve Young. Steve's in the Hall of Fame. Mike,
- 2:57Speaker 2: we all know they didn't slide. They they go because
- 3:01Speaker 2: they felt that protected them because they could get under
- 3:05Speaker 2: the hit. They never slid. Steve Young never slid, Mike
- 3:08Speaker 2: Vick never slid. Maybe they shouldn't let quarterbacks slide, you know,
- 3:13Speaker 2: maybe they should have to dive because when they slide,
- 3:16Speaker 2: they're leaving themselves open to targeting just as well. So listen,
- 3:20Speaker 2: I know that me talking about it isn't gonna have
- 3:23Speaker 2: any effect on it. We just have to do the
- 3:26Speaker 2: best job we can of emphasizing with our players. You know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: sometimes you might have to absorb a hit from a
- 3:33Speaker 2: quarterback to stand a game, as unfortunate as that is.
- 3:36Speaker 2: And you know, it's so easy for all of us
- 3:39Speaker 2: to slow the game down and go slow motion. You
- 3:41Speaker 2: go over to the replay at slow most slow most
- 3:43Speaker 2: slow motion. These are decisions that are happening within a
- 3:45Speaker 2: fraction of a second. So I feel for defensive players
- 3:49Speaker 2: across the country, you know, And it's a hefty price
- 3:52Speaker 2: to play, to be kicked out of a game when
- 3:54Speaker 2: you only get to play twelve games, you know, maybe thirteen,
- 3:57Speaker 2: or if you're a playoff team, a few more. But
- 4:00Speaker 2: it is what it is griping about. It's not going
- 4:03Speaker 2: to help. Trying to find a solution should help if
- 4:07Speaker 2: people that are football, people that understand the game and
- 4:12Speaker 2: what the game really is, you know, are allowed to
- 4:14Speaker 2: get involved. I think we can find a solution, but
- 4:17Speaker 2: right now that's not happening. Yeah, I think it can
- 4:19Speaker 2: happen this year. So we just got to do the
- 4:20Speaker 2: best we can of No.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I think I think you're right about that. We're on
- 4:23Speaker 1: the same I'm sorry, that's okay, We're on the same
- 4:26Speaker 1: page as far as that goes. During the game broadcast,
- 4:29Speaker 1: I was saying you know, you know, maybe we just
- 4:31Speaker 1: can't let quarterbacks slide like that for their own protection.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Think about it, for their own protection, and also the
- 4:37Speaker 1: fact that defensive guys are a little bit in a
- 4:40Speaker 1: bad place too, because they don't know how to tackle
- 4:43Speaker 1: someone who's sliding like that. But going back to what
- 4:45Speaker 1: you said about Mike Vick Steve Young, you go down low,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and you put yourself down on the ground, give yourself
- 4:52Speaker 1: up head first. Your head helmet is way down low.
- 4:56Speaker 1: The chances of you getting hit are kind of slim.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You're going to get hit in the back. You're not
- 5:00Speaker 1: going to get hit in the face and have your
- 5:03Speaker 1: helmet fly off and potentially get concussed. I know that's
- 5:07Speaker 1: a stretch and we're not going to fix this today,
- 5:10Speaker 1: but maybe it's something that has to be a topic
- 5:13Speaker 1: of conversation.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Well, I can tell you this, if they get coaches involved,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and if this becomes something that becomes really, really prominent
- 5:21Speaker 2: in college football this year, more soon than it ever has,
- 5:24Speaker 2: then it will certainly be a topic discussion. I also
- 5:27Speaker 2: think this that I believe the officials on the field
- 5:31Speaker 2: have to throw the flag and take it to review,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and I believe that the person that's in the review
- 5:37Speaker 2: booth making the decision should always have the attitude of
- 5:42Speaker 2: how can I I need to look for ways not
- 5:45Speaker 2: to call targeting rather than ways to make this targeting.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I think they need to err on the side of
- 5:51Speaker 2: it not being targeting. That needs to be their attitude.
- 5:54Speaker 2: My gut feeling is that is their attitude. I don't
- 5:57Speaker 2: think anyone wants to see a young man kicked out
- 5:59Speaker 2: of a game, but listen, it'll eventually hopefully get figured out.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I think the NFL has figured it out. And you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: they're they don't kick guys out of the game, and
- 6:10Speaker 2: they have far fewer players, and they're paying those dudes
- 6:13Speaker 2: a lot more money and we're paying them. So, I
- 6:15Speaker 2: don't know, go talk to Roger Goodell and those guys
- 6:18Speaker 2: and see what they decided.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Yeah, that's kind of the thing that where we're football
- 6:24Speaker 1: in college doesn't have a commissioner you can go to.
- 6:26Speaker 1: You can't pick up the phone and call the commissioner
- 6:29Speaker 1: of college football because there isn't one. Maybe if you could,
- 6:32Speaker 1: that would start that kind of conversation. All right, Jim
- 6:36Speaker 1: Morris with us, we'll be got on.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I listen, I got a bigger problems in targeting.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I know, I know, and we're going to get to
- 6:42Speaker 1: those because I know you take on this stuff head
- 6:44Speaker 1: on anyway, week to week with us, and we certainly
- 6:47Speaker 1: appreciate that. Individual game tickets for all seven Yukon football
