- 0:04Welcome to the USA Cabinet Store podcast. I am
- 0:08Chris, and today we are talking about something
- 0:11every Houston homeowner wants to know. How much
- 0:14does a bathroom remodel actually cost in 2026?
- 0:18I have got Jessica here with me. She has been
- 0:21digging into the latest pricing data, and some
- 0:23of these numbers might surprise you. Jessica,
- 0:26what is the big picture? Hey, Chris. Okay, so
- 0:30the average bathroom remodel in Houston comes
- 0:32in around $12 ,994. But honestly, that average
- 0:36hides a lot. Most projects actually fall between
- 0:39$600 - $900 and $50 ,000. And luxury master bath
- 0:44renovations? Those can blow past $90 ,000. The
- 0:48good news is Houston runs about 8 % cheaper than
- 0:51the national average for construction costs.
- 0:53So you do get more for your money here compared
- 0:55to, say, Dallas or Austin. That is a massive
- 0:59range, though. 6 ,000 versus 90 ,000? How do
- 1:03people figure out where they will land? It really
- 1:05comes down to four things. Bathroom size, the
- 1:08materials you pick, how deep the demolition goes,
- 1:11and which professionals you hire. Let me break
- 1:14down size first. A half bath, so just a toilet
- 1:17and sink, runs $2 ,000 to $7 ,500. A small bathroom
- 1:22under 35 square feet costs $6 ,000 to $15 ,000.
- 1:26Medium bathrooms, 35 to 75 square feet, hit $15
- 1:30,000 to $30 ,000. Enlarged master baths over
- 1:3475 square feet, that is $30 ,000 to $50 ,000.
- 1:38For primary bathroom renovations specifically,
- 1:40most Houston homeowners spend $29 ,000 to $50
- 1:44,000 at the mid -range level. What about per
- 1:46square foot? I know people love that metric for
- 1:49comparing projects. Sure. Budget cosmetic refreshes
- 1:52run $80 to $120 per square foot. Mid -range quality
- 1:57work hits $180 to $280. High -end reaches $300
- 2:02to $450. And luxury custom builds top $500 to
- 2:06$800 plus per square foot. But here is an important
- 2:10catch. Small bathrooms actually cost more per
- 2:13square foot because plumbing and waterproofing
- 2:15are fixed costs. They do not shrink with the
- 2:17room. A 20 -square -foot powder room gut can
- 2:20hit $900 per square foot for that exact reason.
- 2:23Now... Labor's a huge chunk of the budget, right?
- 2:27I keep hearing that skilled workers are getting
- 2:28more expensive. Yes, and this is the biggest
- 2:31story for 2026. Labor now eats 30 -50 % of your
- 2:35total project cost. Rates are up 4 -6 % this
- 2:38year alone. Licensed plumbers charge $45 to $200
- 2:43per hour. Master electricians run $80 to $140.
- 2:48Tile setters are $60 to $100. The Gulf Coast
- 2:52has a real shortage of these skilled trades and
- 2:54it is the number one reason costs keep climbing.
- 2:57Inner loop jobs in Heights, Montrose and Upper
- 2:59Kirby cost even more because parking is harder.
- 3:02City rules are stricter and the old homes need
- 3:04more expertise. Speaking of neighborhoods, how
- 3:07much does your location within Houston affect
- 3:09the price? A lot. Montrose and Houston Heights
- 3:13run 15 to 25 percent above the city average.
- 3:16Those older homes often have galvanized pipes
- 3:19and outdated wiring that need full replacement
- 3:21before any cosmetic work even starts. That alone
- 3:25can add $10 ,000 to $20 ,000. Upper Kirby starts
- 3:29at $25 ,000 for renovations and commonly exceeds
- 3:33$50 ,000 for master baths. But if you are in
- 3:36Katy or Cypress, the newer homes and more contractor
- 3:39options keep mid -range projects at $15 ,000
- 3:42to $28 ,000. Perland is similar at $14 ,000 to
- 3:47$22 ,000. Okay, one thing I keep hearing about
- 3:50is walk -in showers. That seems to be the number
- 3:53one upgrade people want. What does that cost?
- 3:56It is by far the most requested job. A tub -to
- 3:59-shower conversion averages about $9 ,000 in
- 4:02Houston. Custom tile builds with frameless glass
- 4:05enclosures can reach $15 ,000 to $20 ,000. Standard
- 4:10porcelain tile installation runs $12 to $22 per
- 4:14square foot, and fancier patterns like herringbone
- 4:17or natural stone push that to $30 per square
- 4:20foot. If you are removing an old bathtub, add
- 4:23$500 to $1 ,500 or just for demolition. So after
- 4:27spending all that money, what do people actually
- 4:30get back when they sell? Is it worth the investment?
- 4:33It really is. Mid -range bathroom renovations
- 4:36return 70 to 80 percent of their cost at resale
- 4:39in Houston. That is one of the best ROIs of any
- 4:42home improvement project. Upper Kirby specifically
- 4:46hits 70 to 80 percent ROI with quality finishes.
- 4:50Heights and Montrose average 65 to 75 percent.
- 4:54Katy and the suburbs deliver 60 to 70 percent
- 4:57on mid -range work. The rule of thumb is to spend
- 5:00five to ten percent of your home's value on a
- 5:03primary bath for the best return. And universal
- 5:06design features like walk -in showers and comfort
- 5:08height toilets are getting more popular because
- 5:11they appeal to the widest range of buyers. Okay,
- 5:13before we wrap up, give us the best ways to save
- 5:16money. And I know Houston humidity is a big deal.
- 5:18How does that factor in? Smart planning can cut
- 5:2115 to 30 percent off the total. Number one, keep
- 5:25the existing layout. Not moving pipes saves $1
- 5:28,500 to $5 ,000, especially on Houston's slab
- 5:32foundations where moving a toilet means jackhammering
- 5:35concrete. Number two, book in January or February.
- 5:40Contractors often offer 10 % to 15 % discounts
- 5:43in the off season. Number three, do your own
- 5:46demo to save $1 ,000 to $3 ,000. And number four,
- 5:51splurge where it shows, like the tile wall in
- 5:54Vanity. and save on hidden stuff like subflooring.
- 5:58One more thing. In Texas, remodel labor is not
- 6:01taxed, but materials are at 8 .25%. Now about
- 6:06humidity. Houston's 90 % plus humidity wrecks
- 6:10poorly built bathrooms. Waterproofing, oversized
- 6:13exhaust fans, and mold -proof drywall are not
- 6:16upgrades. They are requirements. Spend on the
- 6:19invisible infrastructure first. The tile and
- 6:22glass get the compliments, but the waterproofing
- 6:24keeps your home safe for decades. Such great
- 6:26advice. And before we go, I have to mention this.
