- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And they also have some pretty awesome custom team merch.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: I like to think of it as PFF meeting our lads, but with a little bit more depth.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Check them out at death dash charts dot com or death underscore charts on Twitter and Instagram.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: We are going to go through all of the happenings in college football week two, go through all of the biggest games for college football week three with a new special guest that will be joining us.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: But first, we are going to go through UFC Noche and recap some of the fights that took place there before we preview what is happening at UFC 331 this Saturday, September 19th.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And then we'll do a quick MLB weekend roundup, and then we will get into college football and tail the tailgate.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Let's get to it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: All right, starting off at UFC Noche in the flyweight division, former flyweight champion Brandon Moreno earned a split decision against Joseph Morales to get a nice victory there.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Tommy McMillan also defeated Marwan Rahiki.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Tommy McMillan is on the rise in the UFC rankings.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Uh and a result on the women's side that I really was surprised about surprised by, Alexa Grasso, after she recently defeated Macy Barber in her last fight, she also earns a unanimous decision in the women's fly weight division against Manon Faro, who has been an established contender in that division for quite some time.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Another kind of notable name, I don't know if he's as much of a contender, but he defeated a contender.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Uh that's Curtis Blades.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: He got a nice decision against Waldo Cortez Acasta.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: And in the main event, we had Gene Silva earning a rear naked choke submission victory on Jose Miguel Delgado.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: But we have a jam-packed 331 uh event this weekend on Paramount Plus, where the UFC lives for free.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: One of the first fights that I want to touch on is Marlon Vera and Charles Jordain.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: They cap off the prelim main event with a very exciting bantamweight matchup.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: I really like Charles Jordain here.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Marlon Vera is an aging fighter.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: I like the Canadian Jordain.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: Um, another fight that I'm really excited about is Gable Stevenson, the Olympian, um, in his second UFC fight, he's a minus 1800 favorite against Sean Shiraff.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: And he is the opening fight on the main card.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: We also see Doho Choi uh as a favorite against Patricio Pitbull in the featherweight division.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but the two big fights on this card that everybody should be tuning in for and keeping an eye on.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: The co-main event features Armand uh uh Sarukian and Mauricio Ruffy.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And then the main event, Joshua Van defends his flyweight title belt against Alexander Pantoja.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Just a very, very stacked card.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Really, that main card portion of this fight night is gonna be incredible on UFC 331.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Um, some of the guys I already mentioned I like Jordan there.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Gable Stevenson is um a lock for an under with that minus 1800 money line.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Uh Doho Choi, I also like against Pitbull.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And then really, Ruffy is a guy that I cannot get enough of.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And I like Pantoja to get his belt back after breaking his arm in his in his last title fight.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I like Pantoja to get his belt here.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So now let's move on.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Let's go around the bases a little bit, get to some baseball talk, a weekend roundup.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: First off, the Atlanta Braves were able to get a nice walk-off victory in the 11th inning Friday night before plating 12 runs on Saturday to stretch their NL East lead to the Phillies to five games as they take two out of three from the fight in Phills and stick them a little bit further down in that second wild card spot in the NL.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: The Rays, they continue to pace the AL East.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: They held held the Astros to seven runs in three games as they earned yet another sweep.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: The Rays continue, as I said, to hold pace within the ALEs as they currently have a uh four-game lead after the weekend wrapped up.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: And then clinging to some very, very faint wild card hopes is the other team in Florida, the Miami Marlins.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, they take two out of three from the Dodgers, including a four-run ninth inning on Sunday in the series deciding game.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: The Marlins are still eight and a half games back.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Unrealistic that they make the playoffs with two weeks left, but they are not out of it yet.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: So you can't say it's completely over.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: The Guardians were able to pull within half of a game of the Chicago White Sox as they take two of three from Minnesota.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Cleveland got six and two-thirds, very strong innings on the series deciding game Sunday from Tanner Bebay.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And then the Yankees, powered by their Cy Young, hopeful, soon-to-be Cy Young winner, Cam Schlitler, who pitched six shutout innings.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: They take two out of three from their crosstown rivals, the Mets.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Poor Juan Soto, two years in the orange and blue, no playoff games.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: That's what happens when you leave the pinstripes for the pawn scum that are the Mets.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Now let's get to our guest.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Is excited to welcome in a new guest into the Tailgate.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: That's my good friend Anthony.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Anthony, what's up, man?
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: How you doing?
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Man, can't call it, man.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: It's another day.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: Nice Tuesday after a victory Monday, man.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I feel like I just saw you.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I'm still living off the high of Sunday afternoon and seeing our Jags and our boy Trevor Lawrence be the king that he is.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: But today, we have a little bit of college football to get to.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: So before we do that, I want you to introduce yourself to the tailgate.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: So tell us something about yourself, something you like, the hobby that you like, or um something interesting about you, or maybe some of your favorite sports teams.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, man.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Some of my hobbies, man.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: I I cook a lot, man.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: I love to cook.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Love to cook.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: Um a chef.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Uh spend my time traveling.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: Family.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Want to see the Lakers, you know, USC, Dodgers, man.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: You know, 14 consecutive straight playoff appearances, man.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: What can I say?
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Anthony is a West Coast guy, so he kind of bounces out my southeast narrative that I I try to provide.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Um, so we had a lot of big games last week in week two of college football.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Really, like, it's really weird to me that it's week two because essentially it's really week three if you count week zero.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: It's really, really just semantics, but we'll we'll stick with what they call it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: It was week two.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So we had some big matchups in week two, most notably was where we saw college game day take place, and that was in Austin, Texas, where we saw Ohio State go up 20 points on the Texas Longhorns, and that all vanished in the fourth quarter because Texas came auring back, scored 21 straight unanswered points, and they ended up taking this big matchup between two contending teams.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: My first real question about this, because there's a lot of things you can dissect from that game.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: Were you when you watched this game, were you more impressed that Texas came back or more disappointed that Ohio State blew the lead?
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: With that game, man, I think I was more disappointed in Ohio State.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: They took the foot off the gas and and like really stopped getting the ball to Jeremiah Smith.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Like, dude, he's like he's like the number one guy, and you're not using him.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: Like you went, you went away from him.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: He gave you 100 plus in the first half, you just went away from it.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: So I don't know what Ronnie fixed on that, but uh Yeah, man, I'm I'm disappointed in Ohio State, but I'm more impressed in what Shark does and Arch because Arch really showed, all right, it's my time now.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Between the first half that Arch had and the second half, it couldn't have been more different.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, Arch looked like a deer in headlights again in the first half, a lot like he did last year against Ohio State.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: A lot of one read tuck it and get sacked, a lot of one read tuck it and you know try to throw it away.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: And then in the second half, it was a lot more efficient.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: They got it out to their running backs a lot more, and they also ran the ball a lot better.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Um so now that we've kind of addressed the two teams that played in this game, the two quarterbacks, Julian Saiyan actually had a very strong game.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Obviously, it helps when you have a guy like you reference Jeremiah Smith.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but between the two quarterbacks, anything like really noticeable that stood out to you between Arch and Julian?
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, man, Arch Arch man, Arch settled down.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: I think some for some reason after that second half, he just came out and was like, all right, let me just settle down.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Either he got a call from from the from Hall of Fame uncles or or what, but he he settled down and he he locked in, and that's that's what he needs to do.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: The I heard all I needed to hear about Arch on Saturday morning on game day when they asked him why he wears number 16, and he said, Well, my family's real close to Trevor Lawrence.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I've always worn 16 for him, and I was like, Whoa, we're a little old.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: So uh that being said, Texas did get the victory, the biggest victory so far of the early season, knocking off number one previously Ohio State.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Another team in the Big Ten took a pretty bad loss this weekend, and that was Oregon.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: So they managed to squeak by in week one against Boise State, a game where they came out very sluggish, were able to overcome some things in the second half in that game.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: This game, a lot of the same things.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: You know, Oklahoma State scored 24 points in the first half, and it did not look like they were in any hurry to slow down.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Um before we even like get into anything about the game, how much has your opinion of Oregon changed from two weeks ago to right now?
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: My opinion never changed.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: As a USC fan, never changed.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: I am looking forward to next Saturday night at 7:30.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: That is fair.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: That's a fair's like overrated.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Oregon is more overrated right now, and they're getting they're getting outnumbered right now.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my to me, the biggest takeaway, I said it last week when Brandon was on the podcast.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna say it again.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: The most glaring thing about this Oregon team that was so obvious for three quarters of this game, and then the fourth quarter didn't really matter because they stopped running the ball, but it's the fact that they can't run the ball on anybody.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: Or Oklahoma State had come into this game having lost 12 consecutive games in 16 of their last 17 to FBS opponents.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: That's not a good football team.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And I know they have a new quarterback, a new coach.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: They're still a team that lost 12 games and lost to Tulsa on the road in week one.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: So they were only able to put up 90 total rushing yards.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Meanwhile, Oklahoma State had two 100-yard rushers in this game, and Oregon also gave up four sacks on Dante Moore.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: So you said your view of Oregon doesn't change that much.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: What about your view of Dante Moore out of this game?
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: Dante Moore should have left last year.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: He came back, got paid.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: He should have left last year because the quarterback class this year, he's not in it.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: I'm not even trying to bring this up because you're a USC guy, but you know what it reminds me of is the year that Matt Barkley came back, and things like just the what did they finish the year before?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: That was like 2010, I think, or 2011, maybe when Matt Barkley came back for his last year at USC, and they were like number one or two to end the previous season.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: They came back and I think they lost their first two games just like Oregon did, and everyone was like, Well, what have you done?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: What if what mistake have you made?
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah, I I I mean, I honestly I'm at the point where I kind of feel bad for him because he's clearly got some ability.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: He just doesn't really have he reminds me a little bit of like a very less talented Trevor Lawrence that doesn't run the ball because like for a long time I feel like people's biggest criticism of Trevor was the fact that he's not like a rah-rah guy.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: And Dante Moore is very, you know, poised and lackadaisical almost to the point where I feel like it kind of brings his team's energy down, and it was so obvious to me in this game.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Um, anything like really stand out to you about Mestermaker on Oklahoma State side or anything that they were doing?
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, or is this really just like Oregon dropping the ball?
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Just really Oregon dropping the ball.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Like you're you're like, you're you're top five.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Like you're top five in the country.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Like you're supposed to come out and like after that Boise State performance, you're supposed to come out and like lay the hammer down, like and not let up.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I'm pretty sure on last week's episode, me and my guests at the time said we would have put our mortgage on Oregon minus 22 and a half.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: So thankfully that didn't happen.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: I definitely took the plus in that game.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: Like it was it it seemed like the perfect the it just seemed like the perfect bounce back position for Oregon to be in.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Like you said, after that down performance in week one, and being such a big road favorite against a down team that just lost as well on the road.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: So for them to lose that game, incredibly disappointing.
- 15:24SPEAKER_00: Um, but the not all hope was lost for the Big Ten because Michigan was able to stand up and and be strong in the face of adversity.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: They did what everybody thought Oregon would do off their disappointing week one.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: They were easily the biggest story coming out of week one in college football with the extra second they played 60 minutes and one second of a game against Western Michigan, and they were able to pay it off.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: You know, I this is kind of honestly how I saw this game going.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Um, but before we get into any of it, what stood out to you about this Michigan-Oklahoma game?
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: It was just going back and forth.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: The defense was both both defenses started out really, really, really good.
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: And then I don't know what happened with with uh with Underwood, but he just he flipped the switch.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And Michigan needed this win after storming the field against the JUCO.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know they're in the I know they're in the Mac, but yeah, come on.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: It's an it's an in-state school that you're expected to beat and your fans storm the field.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Uh one thing that stood out to me, I know they only scored 17 points, but one thing that did stood stand out to me quite a bit was Michigan was very willing to run Bryce Underwood, um, which they had not done in previous games or really at all last season when he was a freshman.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: I think some of that was probably like his own, you know, team, his agent, and all of his like managers and stuff saying, like, we don't want him to get hit right now.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Um, we want him to be like a pocket passer, but the guy's 6'5 and runs a 4-3.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: Like, maybe you should let him run a little bit.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Um that touchdown, he literally showed him that he can run.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: That's exactly what I mean.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: Like, that clearly is a skill set that they underutilize.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: So finally seeing them do that was like maybe if they lean into this, you could really start to find some offense.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Not that Michigan, I don't think they'll ever this year be like a top 20 offense, but they can be much more uh competent if they're having him use his legs more every game.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: To me, this just the the thing that this certifies for me is that John Mateer is not a trustworthy quarterback.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Uh we saw last year that he would turn the ball over a lot in these big moments in the college football playoff, um, and some of their bigger games that Oklahoma played, even the Alabama regular season game that they played.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Um, he had a few turnovers in that game.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Um, but really, I mean, just the way that he like is so careless with the ball at times, and people want to make the comparison that he's Baker Mayfield, but Baker Mayfield was a dog in college.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Like, Baker Mayfield did not hold the ball like a loaf of bread and get stripped while he was trying to get to the line of scrimmage.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: What are your thoughts on John Mateir?
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Like, do you see is he like a guy you could see in the NFL, or is he, you know, is he just kind of like a good but not great college quarterback?
- 18:44SPEAKER_01: Like Ty Simpson.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: He might be that first round pick.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Well, you gotta look at O'Lone's schedule.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Like their schedule's tough.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: Like, yeah, they they gotta they gotta bounce back against New Mexico this week, like blow them out.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: But you got Georgia, Texas, Florida, Ole Miss, AM, and Mizzou.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they might they might have the worst offense besides New Mexico of any of those teams that they play.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: So that that's already tough.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: The thing, much like Michigan, that will keep Oklahoma in most of those games, is they have a top five at worst, top ten defense.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: But I I'm officially in the bandwagon of I don't trust John Matthew, and that's just how it's gonna be from now on.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Um, speaking of Mizzou and my Tigers, if you're watching on YouTube at the Tailgate Cam podcast, my Tigers went in on the road for the border ward to that state of the West and got an 18-point win.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: We even decided to rub their face in it a little bit.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: We're going for it on fourth down in the fourth quarter to stretch that lead out to 18.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: My biggest takeaway from this game was how good Austin Simmons was.
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Yes, I know we have played Arkansas Pine Bluff and Kansas, which you know, those are not world-beating schools, but the throws that he makes are legitimately some of the best throws I've ever seen from a Missouri quarterback.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: And they've had multiple NFL guys, Chase Daniel, Blaine Gabbard, um, Drew Locke.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Um, but the throws that he can make, especially as a left-handed quarterback, he has unbelievable zip on his ball, and it just gets to where it needs to go in such a catchable way.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Like, I was so impressed with the throws that he could make.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: Mizoo made a ton of mistakes in the first half, had two blocked field goal attempts.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: One of them KU took back for a touchdown.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: If that doesn't happen, we really blow them out in this game.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately, my number one takeaway from this is that Mizoo's passing game is a legitimate force to be reckoned with, and it will keep them in some of these harder games.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Um, but I'm curious, you know, you're obviously not a Mizoo fan, but I'm curious what your thoughts were on this border war rivalry game.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: That game I didn't really pay attention to, but I know a lot about Austin Simmons.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: And coming from where he was last year, the injuries and just being just being replaced by uh Trinidad.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Like yeah, like dude, like dude was up for the Heisman.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: So I mean, you gotta lose his spot somehow.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: So he he has he has that arm and he can make that that thing sling.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: So one one thing that I actually feel like I forgot that it was happening last year that they brought up on the broadcast on Friday night was that it wasn't like Lane Kiffin was you know completely out on Austin Simmons.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: There was just no way to go back to him after they saw how good Trinidad was.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: And I I don't feel like I remember.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Remember this, but I guess Old Miss actually had packages that Simmons came in for at the end of the year once he got healthy.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I don't feel like I remember him playing in games for them, but I guess he did.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Um, because he he played in nine games last year.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: It wasn't like he only played in the first two.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Um, he played in nine games for Old Miss last year, which kind of blew my mind.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: Also, some of those probably coming in like mop-up duty when they're they were beating kids by 40 or 50.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: So uh, but ultimately the Tigers got the win.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: The rivalry, border war stays in Como, so I can't be happier than that.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Um staying in the SEC, Alabama overcame three first quarter turnovers.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: They've had a fumble and two interceptions in the first quarter, or excuse me, two fumbles and an interception in the first quarter.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: Uh, but they were able to overcome all that.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: Daniel Hill, their starting running back, had 104 yards and a touchdown.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Both of Alabama's outside linebackers each had two sacks and really just kind of quashed any momentum that Kentucky had at the start of this game.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Um, for the first 20 or so minutes, it really felt like Kentucky might be in this game.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: And then it just quickly, it quickly became apparent that Alabama's defense was so much better than Kentucky's offense, and there was just no real game after that.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: Really, my my big question here is I didn't leave like super impressed with Keelan Russell.
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: You know, uh I know he's a five-star quarterback.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: I know that like a lot of people in the high school recruiting ranking world like really liked him.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: I'm just curious, like, between the game last week that they played against East Carolina and then this week against Kentucky, are you in on Keelan Russell?
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: Do you need to see more?
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Like, where are you at with him?
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: I need to see more.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, because I'm not I'm not sold on him yet.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Like I'm not sold on on the on uh Caitlin Navar.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Um this is really post-Nick Saban.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: This is year three post-Nick Saban.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: This is year three after Caitlin Navour won the national title or was in the championship.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: So he's just gonna pay that.
- 24:21SPEAKER_01: Like you're paying the guy that hasn't really shown you anything, he lost more games than Nick Saban has lost in, I would say, six years.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: So like that's big shoes to feel.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: So it starts with the starts with the coach.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm not I'm not really sold on Keelan yet, but I feel like after probably the next couple games, he has to play these big games.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: If he could if he can win big games, hey.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: Well, they had they're in a game this weekend that we'll be talking about here in a minute, uh, against a team that many of our friends are very fond of.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: So we'll get we'll get to give some more Alabama opinions in a few minutes.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, ultimately, like I I just feel like my my biggest takeaway was I was impressed with Alabama's mental toughness to respond in that moment.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, Lexington's not the hardest place in the world to play, but it's still in the SEC.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: They still get 70,000 fans in there, and it's very loud.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: And that was a close game for 20 minutes, but they made sure that that game got out of hand quickly, and that was impressive to me.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: You know, going on the road, handling business, you win by four scores like that means something.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: It means something.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: I just don't know how much it means yet, so I'm kind of with you there.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Um, uh another uh game in the SEC, but this one was non-conference, Texas AM hosted Arizona State.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: Uh AM came in as 14 and a half point favorites.
- 25:49SPEAKER_00: And at the start of the fourth quarter, for all those who were on the Arizona State side of this, my hand is raised.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Uh we saw the score only being four points.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: Uh AM was up 24 to 20, and then that final quarter happened, and AM outscored Arizona State 24 to nothing.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: My question about this game, are you concerned that AM was struggling for so long in this game, or are you just more impressed that they were able to dominate at the end of a game against a you know power four team that is well coached?
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: A and they needed to overcome in the fourth quarter.
- 26:28SPEAKER_01: They had to because all these teams that you're playing, you you're in the mob.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: Like I call the SEC the mob.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:39SPEAKER_01: It's one of the best conferences.
- 26:42SPEAKER_01: But you gotta you gotta learn how to like these teams like Arizona C and Colorado, you gotta learn how to blow these teams out.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: You can't let your foot off the gas.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: You gotta you gotta come in, start fast, and then go.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: You can't you can't blow these these these games or let them act like they're in these games.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: And there were a few different points when it felt like during the first half or even like in that third quarter, where it felt like AM might blow them out, and it and Arizona State kept keeping it close until that fourth quarter came.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And then the kind of the wheels just essentially fell off for for Arizona State.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately a strong win again, won by 28 points against the power four team, and or 28 points, excuse me.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: That's the theme of the day, because we also see Tennessee, who went on the road with a freshman quarterback, Faison Brandon.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: They also got a 28-point win at Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: And I'll just say this I know Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: It might be time for his brother to find something else to do with his life because I don't think I don't think playing quarterback at the power four level is what that man should be doing right now.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Um, and the other takeaway that I have, being a Florida Gator fan, is they clearly miss Buster Faulkner, who was their offensive coordinator last year in the last three years while they had Haynes King.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: And Buster Faulkner has hit the ground running with the Gators, averaging 59 points a game to start the season.
- 28:15SPEAKER_00: It's just not working out well for our for little Mendoza out up there in Atlanta.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: On the flip side, Tennessee had a great performance from their running back, Deshaun Bishop, ran for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Tennessee had four sacks, two picks, and an early pick six, and that and that's really when this game blew open when they got that Alberto Mendoza pick six in the second quarter.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, my my question about this game where is your confidence level in a freshman quarterback like Faison Brandon?
- 28:49SPEAKER_00: Um, he was, I think, the second rated quarterback in all of high school last year, immediately won the job at a school like Tennessee.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: So you know the kid like he's got some zip, he's got some juice to him.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: What what are your thoughts from this game?
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: And I know they played an FCS team in week one, but where are you at with Faison Brandon?
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Fais on Brandon, I've been watching this kid since he was a junior in high school.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Like this kid's this kid's really, really talented.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: And I'm I'm really, really the ceiling is really high for him right now.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: And Tennessee always brings in great quarterbacks, great young quarterbacks, as we saw Nico.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: Nico had that that one year we uh he did good and then you know he went to the other school in LA.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: So uh so yeah, I'm I'm I just I just with that with Fazon, I want to see what he does when they open up SEC play against Texas.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: Where he has to all right to be a game.
- 29:53SPEAKER_01: I'm in Austin.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: I gotta make a name here.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: In in Atlanta, Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: I've never been there personally, but I do believe it's like one of the harder places to play.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: And when you get up by 28 points, there's no place in the country that's hard to play.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: So they didn't really they didn't really get that test in the in the end of the game, like you're talking about like they will in in Austin.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: So uh ultimately as somebody that despises the University of Tennessee, it was an impressive performance for them.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Um and again, uh the theme of the day SEC teams winning by double digits, and that continued on there.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: Um, the Cyhawk rivalry.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: The the biggest note for this game was that Iowa was favored by 14 and a half points on the spread, and they didn't score 14 and a half points until the clock hit zero on the game-winning field goal.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Um and Iowa State's quarterback, they have Arkansas State's old quarterback, um, Jalen Rayner, who transferred into Iowa State.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: And I mean, it was kind of expected.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: They lost about 40 players to Penn State in the transfer portal when Matt Campbell left.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: And it it feels like it.
- 31:07SPEAKER_00: Like when you watch Iowa State, it feels like they are a bunch of guys that have never played together before, and they're also not meant to be at the in the Big 12.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Um, any major takeaways about this game?
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Do you think Iowa I guess like do you think Iowa could really be a contender in the Big Ten?
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Iowa has has not been a contender in the Big Ten in a long time.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: And I don't think they'll get there right now because you got all these other schools that's that that's that join.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: Like USC, Oregon, Washington.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: You have all these schools that join.
- 31:44SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be tough for Iowa to sneak back in there.
- 31:48SPEAKER_01: Uh they will they will eventually like.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're we all know they're probably a basketball school.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, unless we really I uh my my I feel like especially after seeing Oregon flounder the way that they did, and obviously I think Ohio State will be more than fine, but I am worried about Oregon, which to me does open up a spot for somebody in the Big Ten, whether it you know it's USC, whether it's a team like Penn State, if they're able to rally around Matt Campbell and Rocco Beck, which I'm not there yet.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: They really struggled with Temple.
- 32:25SPEAKER_00: Um I do think that there's something there with Iowa.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: I like their running game.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: Um, their defense put on another good show.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: They've only allowed 13 total points on the whole season.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Um, it's really just, I mean, the story always with Iowa is can they score 21 points?
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: If they can, they have a good chance to win a lot of games.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately, I do think that the door is slightly open for another team in the Big Ten, like a USC, like an Iowa.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: I would have said a week ago, like a Minnesota, but they got smacked.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: We're about to talk about them in a second, but uh Texas Tech in the Big 12, we we jumped off Iowa State.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Um, Texas Tech, they were able to barely squeak by Oregon State.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: And Texas Tech, they they are in a game that we're gonna talk about on our tail the tailgate segment.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, they are in a game this Friday against Houston.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: That if you watch this game against Oregon State, you you would be concerned about them hosting Houston this week.
- 33:27SPEAKER_00: Um, the alarm bells are fully off for me.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: I I've always said if you have two quarterbacks, you don't really have any.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: And the way that they keep going to Thomas Castellanos, um, who I have never been a major fan of, is beyond concerning.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: It's beyond concerning that they are this is where they're at in week three.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: So what are your do you have any like are you confident in Texas Tech?
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: I'm I know they ran through the Big 12 last year.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: They're expected to run through it again, but are you worried about them?
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: Do you think they'll be okay?
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Do you think it was just kind of a hard road game?
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: Like, what are your thoughts?
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: I think they're easing Tommy in there because they know Tommy's gonna come in and take that starting job.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: That could be that could be the case.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: Like, I like Tommy when he was at Boston College.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Florida State, not so much.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: But now he's like, all right, now I gotta.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: It's like my third chance.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Now I gotta go out here and show him what I can do.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: And I think that would be this game that that they play.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: And I think not gonna be a nice outcome, but I think it's time for Tommy to come in.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 34:36SPEAKER_00: Well, let's uh wrap up some of our uh major game recaps from week two, and that was a game I just kind of mentioned on the Iowa, Iowa State game, and that's Mississippi State.
- 34:46SPEAKER_00: They went on the road to Minnesota and absolutely smashed the Golden Gophers.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: To me, right now, Camario Taylor is playing the best quarterback other than maybe Darien Mensah in the whole country.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: He has been absolutely electric.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: And to do this, when you're a team like Mississippi State, who does not win many games every year?
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: Last year they won four games.
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: The year before that, I think they won three.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: To go on the road, I don't care if it was Minnesota, they won a road game against a Big Ten team.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: That means something.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: Like they they won by 25 points.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: My question about this game is how realistic is it that Camario Taylor is in New York City for the Heisman?
- 35:30SPEAKER_00: As we're uh on September 15th, as we're saying this.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: Oh he's for me, he's not he's good, but he's I think Darren missing uh it's a couple uh wide receivers out there that's that's there.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: But he show me one more game, show me a a nice game.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Like they got a couple SEC uh schedule is pretty pretty nice, so they win some of those blood baths.
- 36:02SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they um they open with South Carolina this week, and then it gets incredibly hard.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: They I think they play five straight ranked opponents um between Oklahoma, Texas, I'm trying to remember Texas AM, Mizzou, and Florida in five straight weeks.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: So we'll know.
- 36:23SPEAKER_00: We'll know if he gets through that and they win three of those games, maybe we'll know.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: We'll know what's up.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: So ask me that ask me that let's bring that question back around Halloween.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: That's that's super fair.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm riding the hype train.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: I think he is electric.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: He to me, this feels lofty, but he reminds me a lot of Vince Young, like how tall and long he is, and the way the way he is is pass first, but still able to stride at such ease.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: He reminds me so much of Vince Young.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: But um, before we move on to Tail the Tailgate, I want to hit on some of the other games that we did not dive into.
- 37:04SPEAKER_00: Washington barely survived Utah State.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: They won by two points.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Um, BYU uh absolutely dismantled Arizona on the road.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Um, Duke defeated Illinois on the road.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Again, the theme of the day was the Big Ten just really did not have a great day.
- 37:22SPEAKER_00: Um, the best game, like just football game, if you were there in the stands all day, might have been Wake Forest and Purdue.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: Um, they went to double overtime.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: I'm sure nobody in America was watching Wake Forest and Purdue besides me, but it was a great game.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: Um, in the group of six, Boise State pulled away in the second half from Memphis.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: Um, USF, this was an incredible ending to this game.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Uh, they they were down on fourth and fourth and five, I believe, on the last drive.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: There was about 40 seconds left, and they were down by three.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: So they could have either kicked the field goal to tie the game, would have been a long field goal, um, or they could have opted to go for it, try to get the first down and make it a shorter field goal.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: And they call timeout.
- 38:09SPEAKER_00: Everybody on the TV crew is thinking, oh, USF's gonna come back out and kick the field goal and go to overtime.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: They come back out of the commercial break, the quarterback's still on the field, they snap the ball right away, and Van Buren just floats it about 45 yards downfield, right into the breadbasket of his wide receiver, running into the end zone, they walk it off 28-24.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: I thought that was a very impressive win in the American conference, and then one of the few SET teams that took a licking uh was Arkansas, who they could take a licking from anybody.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: They got absolutely throttled by Utah on the road.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Um, any of those really stand out to you amongst uh of those other notable games?
- 38:55SPEAKER_01: Uh it's really the Utah game.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Utah Utah was in the in a in a new era of post-Cyle Winningham.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: And you know, Kyle Winningham was like a really great, great coach there.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Now he's in Michigan.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: And like showing what they could do post him is really impressive right now.
- 39:16SPEAKER_01: But definitely that USF.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: That was very gussy.
- 39:21SPEAKER_00: That was crazy.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I I I really couldn't believe it when they came back from commercial and he and they still had the offense on the field, and they just immediately snapped it.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: Like there was no gimmick.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Like, that's what Brian Hartline wanted to do.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: And I was like, man, for a first time head coach in his life, just to do that in his second game.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: I I was really impressed.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, that's a great call in Utah too.
- 39:44SPEAKER_00: Morgan Scally took over for Kyle Woodingham there, and Arkansas actually scored first in this game.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: They were up three to nothing for the first, I don't know, five minutes.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: And our Utah went on a 43-point unanswered run.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: So that's about how things will probably go all year for the Razorbacks.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: Um, as we did last week and as we will do every week, I'm gonna highlight some of the best performances that I saw.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: Um, one of them being a game that we just talked about, uh, Boise State and their running back, Dylan Riley, he ran for 206 yards on 19 carries, and what was a very important group of six game to decide what essentially will be that last playoff spot.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Uh, a guy that you mentioned on the first game that we talked about, Jeremiah Smith.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: He went eight for 164 and a touchdown, but they did take the loss in Austin.
- 40:37SPEAKER_00: Uh Princewell, Umami Ellen, had three sacks for LSU against Louisiana Tech.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: And you can't do the player of the week if without mentioning Camario Taylor.
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Uh, his 313 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns helped Mississippi State beat Minnesota on the road.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: Well, fun week two.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: We have some interesting matchups in week three.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: One of them kind of looms over all the others, though.
- 41:06SPEAKER_00: And that's just kind of what happens when Lane Kiven's involved in college football.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: He seems to draw some storylines.
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: So are you ready to tail the tailgate?
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: Hey, man, let's bring it on.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 41:18SPEAKER_00: So our first game that we are looking at is LSU and Ole Miss.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: LSU comes into this game, uh, minus three on the spread.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 58 and a half.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Obviously, the big storylines here, and probably the biggest storyline of this whole weekend, Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford.
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: He has already requested to have uh the state patrol on the sideline with him because he is concerned for his safety.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't think he needs to worry about that because I think they're getting out of there with a dub.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: I got LSU on the money line.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: What do you like in this game?
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: I really like LSU at the money line, but it's going to be a total shootout.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Trinidad Shamless.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: They're both gonna like just sling it.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Like it's gonna, I'll take I like I like the overnight game and over in the in the total.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: It's it's gonna be a blood bath shootout.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: I like I like that call.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: Um it it just would I I know I'm on LSU and I'm I'm not trying to talk myself out of it, but wouldn't it just be so perfect for college football if Ole Miss won this game?
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: Like the narratives would be insane all night Saturday if Lane Kiffin goes to Oxford and they just got housed by USC and the quarterback that he didn't take with him to LSU, and you know, like all these different narratives, all the players that are at LSU with him.
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: I just think that would be the narrative that would feed people all season if he went to Oxford and lost that game.
- 42:59SPEAKER_00: They could lose any other game this year, but if they lose this game, he'll never live it down, he'll never live it down.
- 43:07SPEAKER_01: He has to go in there and literally be like, all right, y'all ain't nothing without me.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: And he, I mean, it's it is really crazy.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: If it feels like Lane Kiffin is almost like a cat that's had nine lives.
- 43:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, people forget that he was the Oakland Raiders head coach at one point.
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: He got fired for drafting Jamarcus Russell, drafted Jamarcus Russell.
- 43:32SPEAKER_00: He was at USC.
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, he he revitalized his career at Florida Atlantic, you know, ran the offense for Auburn or for Alabama with Nick Saban.
- 43:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, it feels like that guy has had life after was the head coach at the University of Tennessee.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's been everywhere, and I I do feel like hit his position and his ego that does get involved is the superpower that they need in this game to help them win.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: So That's kind of why I'm on LSU.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Really, if I looked at it from like which team I think is better and the fact that they're in Oxford, I'd probably pick Old Miss.
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: I just don't think that matters this week.
- 44:10SPEAKER_00: I just don't think it matters.
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Um well, we mentioned this earlier.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: We have a good amount of our friends that have a rooting interest in this game.
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: And that is Florida State, who beat Alabama at home last year in week one.
- 44:30SPEAKER_00: Now they travel on the road after that fiasco of a game that they had on that Monday night against SMU that started about two hours late.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Um, some news out of Tallahassee actually came out uh two days ago that they fired their athletic director, Mike Alford, um, and their associate athletic athletic director has now taken over.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: Bama comes into this game minus 19 and a half on the spread, and the over-under is set at 49 and a half.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: I went first on the last game, so I will let you go first this time.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: What do you like in Florida State, Alabama?
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, really, really leaning towards Florida State with plus 19 and a half.
- 45:14SPEAKER_01: Uh man, that defense, man.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: I need that defense to really how they showed up in that uh second half of that uh SMU game.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: I really need that defensive line to lock in and stop the run.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: If they stop the run, get to the quarterback, they'll keep his game fairly close and it'll be under 49 and a half.
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like that.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Um my I I the thing that I think that Florida State should do, I don't know if they will do because Mike Norvell doesn't always do things the way that they should be done.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: Um but the thing that they should do, if I was them, would be to let Ashton Daniels run the ball more.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: That's clearly what his strength is.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: He's clearly not an elite level passer.
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: That being said, I'm with you.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: I'm also on Florida State plus 19 and a half.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: It just feels like that is the ultimate buy low spot.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: I don't know if there is a scenario where Florida State could be a bigger underdog at Alabama than that.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: And because of that, I just think because it's the lowest value you'll ever find, I'm gonna take the knolls, sadly.
- 46:27SPEAKER_00: Um sticking with the theme, Houston travels to Texas Tech.
- 46:34SPEAKER_00: Texas Tech comes into this game as a seven and a half point favorite.
- 46:38SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 53 and a half.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: Houston, on the first podcast that I did of the Tailgate Camp podcast, I gave out three dark horses for this year that could make the playoffs.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: The first team that I mentioned, the Houston Cougars.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: And that's because of two things.
- 46:57SPEAKER_00: One, they have a good experienced quarterback that can run, and that's Connor Wegman, and they have a very, very good head coach that gets forgotten about, and that's Willie Fritz.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: That guy is a great football coach.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: He was great at Tulane before John Summerall got there.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: He's a great football coach.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: I love the Houston Cougars this Friday night.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: Give me all of those seven and a half points.
- 47:22SPEAKER_00: Where are you at?
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm on the money line.
- 47:25SPEAKER_01: Oh, I am on the money line.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: Doug! Connor, dude, dude, he was at Texas AM.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: I really, I really liked and coming over to Houston and been there two seasons now, so I think they go to Texas Tech at Friday night and uh and make that upset.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you what, we we talked about it when we meant when we uh went through the Texas Tech Oregon State game.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: If Texas Tech doesn't have a real plan for what they're gonna do at quarterback in this game, it might get ugly.
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Like if they're doing like this back and forth, flippy floppy, we don't know when to put Thomas in, we don't know when to put Hammond in.
- 48:06SPEAKER_00: It might get ugly.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Um I I think Houston is a team that knows its identity, they know how they like to play offense.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: Um, I think that they are very well coached.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: Not that Texas Tech isn't, I think Joey McGuire is a good coach.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: I just love Houston in this spot.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: They're very slept on here.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: I think they're in a great position to take advantage of this.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: The other thing, too, in the last 18 months, so the first two games of this year and all of last season, Texas Tech has been involved in one one-score game in the Big 12, a game that they lost to Arizona State last year.
- 48:46SPEAKER_00: And so, what that tells me is if this game is close in the fourth quarter, Texas Tech might get a little uh uncomfortable with that scoreboard.
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: And that's another reason why I feel like I like Houston because Houston's made for this.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: Like they they won 10 games last year, they are not strangers to you know being in close games.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: So we're both on the couch, but my friend Anthony's a little bit more confident than me, but I love it.
- 49:15SPEAKER_00: I listen, I'm here for it.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: Listen, this one thing about Houston, Houston's like their like their men's basketball team, Kevin uh Samson.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: They are no they are no punks, they are not, they ain't gonna be bullies, they is gonna really come in and literally stand 10 toes on that field.
- 49:30SPEAKER_00: Yep, absolutely.
- 49:32SPEAKER_00: Um, another really important uh in-conference matchup this week, SMU travels on the road to Louisville.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: These are two of the contenders to play Miami, really, in the ACC championship game.
- 49:45SPEAKER_00: Louisville opens as a one and a half point favorite.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 59.5.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: To me, when I look at this game, I'm looking at two quarterbacks that I don't really know how good they are.
- 49:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I know they both played a decent amount between Kevin Jennings on the SMU side and Luke Keenholz on the Louisville side.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: This is just a situation where I think uh Jeff Brahm is just a much better coach.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: They're at home.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think that some of the things that I saw from their offense against Ole Miss give me a lot of confidence that they could take advantage of SMU.
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: Give me the Cardinals on the money line.
- 50:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I agree.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 50:28SPEAKER_01: Uh that game against Ole Miss.
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: Should have won that game.
- 50:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely should have won that game.
- 50:38SPEAKER_01: They I don't know what happened, but they miss I'm I know what happened, they missed some some some key plays, but they definitely deserve to win this game.
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: So I like the money line on that.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: Um, another rivalry game, which I actually heard kind of a funny little anecdote about this.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: So everyone knows that West Virginia plays country roads, you know, at every home game.
- 51:03SPEAKER_00: Country Road, take me home.
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: And apparently, when that song was originally written by John Denver, he wasn't actually talking about the state of West Virginia, he was talking about the western part of Virginia.
- 51:21SPEAKER_00: Take me home, West Virginia, which is just really funny.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, just kind of sets this the table for this game.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Virginia, former Mizzou quarterback Bo Prabula leads their offense.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: They come into this game favored by 10 points.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 53 and a half.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: I like Richrod.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: I like Richrod in this game.
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: I like their running back, Cam Cook, who he brought with him from Jacksonville State.
- 51:45SPEAKER_00: I think that guy is a stud.
- 51:48SPEAKER_00: I like West Virginia to keep this close.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: And if they know that Bo Purpula is supposed to run, unlike what NC State did in week zero, which there's no forgiveness for that.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: They had all offseason to be ready for the fact that Bo Prabula likes to run, and they had no plans for defending a running quarterback.
- 52:08SPEAKER_00: I think West Virginia will be more prepared than NC State was.
- 52:12SPEAKER_00: Give me the Mountaineers plus 10.
- 52:14SPEAKER_00: Where are you at?
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: I'm on the opposite end of that.
- 52:19SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna flip it.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: Give me UVA on the screen.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Because that first game, like you brought it up against uh NC State.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: I don't know what happened with CJ Bailey, but both a boca run.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: He can run for sure.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: I think if I don't recall, I think Bo played in a bowl game, right?
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: Or no, he did not.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: No.
- 52:47SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, they he first off, yeah, that CJ Bailey performance in in week zero was of the games that I've actually paid attention to for most of the game this year, the worst quarterbacking I've seen of any game that wasn't NFL preseason.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: Um it was it was horrendous from a guy that a lot of people think could be in the NFL.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Um, again, that's kind of like another reason why I feel like I like West Virginia.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: Like I just like the spot that they're in here.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: Um, but you're on Virginia.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: A couple fights already on the board.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: Um, we'll see if we got another one in this next game.
- 53:25SPEAKER_00: So we have another ACC Big Ten matchup, former Big Ten coach James Franklin, and a guy that he is not too fond of on the head coach, uh as the head coach of the Maryland Terrapins, and that is Mike Loxley.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: Those two guys do not like each other, they're not friendly with each other.
- 53:45SPEAKER_00: If you remember like three years ago when Penn State played at Maryland and almost lost, they had that weird, like over-aggressive handshake where he was like, Oh, shake my hand, you know, like right in the middle of the field, and it was like, Whoa, what is Mike Loxley doing?
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: Um, I I like Ethan Gronkenmeyer on Virginia Tech.
- 54:05SPEAKER_00: I also like uh their tight end, Luke Reynolds, who came over from Penn State.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: I think that guy is an absolute difference maker.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna take Virginia Tech money line.
- 54:18SPEAKER_00: Uh, I forgot to mention they can come in as road favorites by three points.
- 54:22SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 53 and a half.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: So I'm taking a road favorite, which is kind of a no-no in college football.
- 54:30SPEAKER_00: Uh, where are you at?
- 54:33SPEAKER_01: I'm on a home team.
- 54:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 54:35SPEAKER_01: I'm on Maryland, but I'm not a change frankly person.
- 54:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's fair.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: Uh but I do think this will be a low-scoring game.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: It will be a defensive uh game.
- 54:49SPEAKER_01: It'll come down to a field goal.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: So that three-point spread that they have.
- 54:55SPEAKER_01: I I like I like Maryland.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: Hey, the the rule always has been there's nothing better than a home team in college football that gets points, and you got three of them to work with.
- 55:06SPEAKER_00: So um now we got to move on to my Florida Gators who traveled for their first road test under the John Sumerall era and the first SEC test for Alec Golesch and the Auburn Tigers.
- 55:20SPEAKER_00: Florida comes in as a road dog, minus two and a half.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: Um, the over-under is set at 53 and a half.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: Uh, looking at our notes, I feel like we see this game the exact same way.
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: Um, I'll let you go first uh with your pick for this game.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: This is a game here.
- 55:40SPEAKER_01: So I like the over in this game.
- 55:43SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a shootout.
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: Two new quarterbacks on two new teams, two new coaches.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: But Florida, some of those Florida defensive players have a little uh a little flashback of last year when uh USF came into town and I was at that game.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, I was too.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: So uh I think Florida needs a little get back here for the coach and uh and that defense.
- 56:13SPEAKER_01: But uh I like the over in that game.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: I think uh Florida runs the ball very well.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: They got a really great running back.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: Run the ball.
- 56:22SPEAKER_01: So if they just run that, definitely a an over.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: I also have the over 53 and a half in this game.
- 56:32SPEAKER_00: When I think about this matchup, I have a lot of faith right now in Florida's offense, which is coming out of the Billy Napier experience is wild to say after two games.
- 56:45SPEAKER_00: Um, but I do.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: Buster Faulkner is a very, very good offensive coordinator.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: He knows how to get easy things going for his team.
- 56:54SPEAKER_00: Um, short screens, um, quick conversions, you know, three, four yards here and there to kind of sprinkle in and keep a drive moving forward.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: Um, the other thing that I also think Auburn has struggled quite a bit on offense to start this new campaign with Byron Brown and all the you know USF Tigers, as I'm as I'm calling them right now.
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: Um, they struggled against Baylor, which I think Baylor has a better defense than people want to give him credit for.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: Um, and then they also didn't really play that well on offense last weekend against Southern Miss.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: All of that being said, sometimes water has to find its level, and I think their offense is gonna do a lot better in this game.
- 57:37SPEAKER_00: And the first game that Florida's gonna see, you know, real SEC speed.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: I do think Florida could come out on top in this game, but I'm with you.
- 57:47SPEAKER_00: I think the over 53 and a half is the play here.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: Um, but ultimately this should be a very, very good, close, exciting game on the road at night in Jordan Hare.
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: So that'll be one to watch 7 p.m.
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: Eastern time Saturday night.
- 58:02SPEAKER_00: And then our last game we will pick for the tail, the tailgate segment is Mississippi State and South Carolina.
- 58:09SPEAKER_00: South Carolina is a four-point home favorite.
- 58:13SPEAKER_00: The over-under is set at 59.5.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: I could go on and on about Camario Taylor.
- 58:20SPEAKER_00: This might be the matchup of the best quarterback matchup of the weekend between Lenora Sellers, who a lot of people love in the NFL, and then Camario Taylor, who, like I said, maybe could get his way to New York by the end of the season.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a reason that total is set at 59 and a half.
- 58:38SPEAKER_00: Both of these teams know how to score, and both of these teams know how to run the ball.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: I like the over 59 and a half.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: That was this is a tough game because the total is set at 59 and a half, and we know both quarterbacks are gonna want to run.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: They're gonna throw it.
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be a lot of points.
- 59:03SPEAKER_01: But I think Mississippi State goes in the Carolina and really you want them to be you you want them to be the Heisman front runner.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: I I'm with you.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: This is a game that he makes that statement for me and changes my mind.
- 59:19SPEAKER_00: And this is like what you said.
- 59:20SPEAKER_00: You you said you needed to see it for a few games from him, and the schedule after this game for Mississippi State gets much harder.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: So if you're going to keep that momentum and be legitimately involved in the Heisman conversation, you have to win this game.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so don't get me wrong on uh Ledore, but no, I know he's talented, and but Mississippi State needs this.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:44SPEAKER_00: Um, a few other notable games that I just want to point out.
- 59:48SPEAKER_00: Kentucky travels to AM this weekend.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: AM is a 16 and a half point home favorite.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: NC State travels to Vanderbilt.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: Vanderbilt is a three and a half point favorite.
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: They also just announced today, as of this recording, that their number one overall recruit, Jared Curtis, will be getting his first career start against NC State.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: So good quarterback matchup there with CJ Bailey.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe a good quarterback matchup with CJ Bailey and Jared Curtis.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: Uh Billy Napier and his program record setting, 87 points.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: God, I hate that guy.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: Scored 87 points against Wagner.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: Like, for what reason, bro?
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_00: Like, unbelievable.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: They travel to San Diego State, where San Diego State is a two and a half point home favorite.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_00: Like the Aztecs there, honestly.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of travel for a team from Virginia to go all the way out to San Diego for a night game.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Um, North Carolina travels to Clemson, where they are just a three and a half point dog.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_00: That is the most telling sign of the Dabbo Sweeney era of all time.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_00: That they are just a three and a half point home favorite to Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: That's crazy to me.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: Um, Colorado and Coach Prime and Julian Lewis traveled to Northwestern.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Northwestern opens as a three and a half point favorite.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: And then finally, Western Michigan in their full 60 minutes of game time, they traveled to Rice, and Western Michigan is a nine and a half point road favorite.
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_00: So to re-well, before we recap, any of those games kind of stand out to you?
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: I know I've touched on the North Carolina game, but any of those really stand out to you?
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, man.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: That North Carolina game, I think Bill Belichick comes into the Death Valley and uh really, really makes a statement, like, hey, I can still do this coaching thing.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: Like, this isn't going from these adults to to like train these college kids, yeah.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: We'll get there.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would not be surprised if if North Carolina won.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, then the other one is the Northwestern and Colorado game.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: Uh Northwestern has a brand new coach, brand new quarterback, brand new offensive coordinator in Chip Kelly.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm big on Northwestern.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_01: Uh the quarterback Aiden Child is a family friend back home in California.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_01: So I watched him play at Michigan State with my cousin a couple years ago, and then him transferring over to Northwestern.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_01: So I'm pretty sold on Northwestern to Chip Kelly error in the office of coordinator to get there and make a statement.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's definitely an opportunity for both of those teams.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean, there's a few games, like that's one of them.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: The NC State Vandy game, like both of those, both of those games like present an opportunity where the public perception of Northwestern and Colorado and uh NC State and Vany could drastically change based on the outcome of this these games.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Like if Northwestern wins and they're 3-0 and they just beat Colorado, people will actually start to feel pretty optimistic about what's going on there.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: But if they lose at home, you know, like it just really there's a lot that can swing on some of these games this week, which is what is great about these first couple weeks of real matchups.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_00: Um so to recap, I am on LSU Moneyline, Florida State plus 19.5, Houston plus 7.5, Louisville money line, West Virginia plus 10.5, Virginia Tech money line, Florida Auburn over 53.5, and Mississippi State, South Carolina over 59.5.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: Anthony is on LSU over 58 and a half, FSU plus 19.5, Houston money line, Louisville money line, UAV minus 10, Maryland money line, Florida State, oh Florida Auburn over 53.5, and Mississippi State Moneyline.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_00: Well, Anthony, the last thing that I always ask everybody that joins the tailgate, did you enjoy your time in the tailgate?
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: I would love to come back.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: I had a ball.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, any last thoughts you want to leave us with either about week two that we just saw or going into week three?
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Uh it's a lot of teams starting a conference play.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_01: So it's a lot of teams that I would like to see make a statement, including my USC Trojans opening against Rutgers after they got blown against U.S.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: So we're coming in with a brand new defense coordinator, Gary Patterson from TCU.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_01: So I think Lane, not Lane, uh Lincoln Riley has a really great defense this year.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: So that that's that's all I wanted to say.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: Well, uh, Anthony, I appreciate you jumping in the tailgate with me today.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_00: Uh appreciate you.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_00: Uh, and this will be out tomorrow for everybody to listen to.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: So exciting week of college football ahead of us.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much, sir.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: All right, man.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_01: Appreciate it.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: Well, that was awesome having Anthony join the tailgate.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: We were able to go through a lot of those week two games that took place in college football, and then we got through our tail the tailgate segment.
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: So we will wrap up today's episode with our gold star of the weekend.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_00: Has to go to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, who just went 20 of 29 for 334 yards, two passing touchdowns, ran for another 23 yards and two more rushing touchdowns to give him four touchdowns on the day and a win against what everybody said was the best defense in the NFL, the Houston Texans.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_00: And for the first time in Josh Allen's career, where he was previously 0-4, he got a win in Houston at NRG Stadium.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_00: And then my what to watch for during the week is Thursday night football.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_00: Those same bills, led by that same man, Josh Allen, host the Detroit Football Lions and Jameer Gibbs, Amon Ross St.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_00: Brown, and Sam Laporta, incredible superstars, DJ Moore, James Cook, lots to love, lots to watch, lots to pay attention to for fantasy.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_00: Should be a very fun, electric, high-scoring, competitive game that will lead us into a full slate of football all weekend.
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: As always, thank you so much for listening to the Tailgate Cam podcast.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: I am your host, Cameron Clark.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: Like, subscribe, comment, and share this wherever you get your podcast.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_00: Peace.
