- 0:10Speaker 1: you here the New England Patriots Swidge, the countdown is on.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to the Patriots Draft Countdown, presented by bud Light.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Welcome everybody who are coming to you from day two
- 0:22Speaker 3: of the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. This is Patriots
- 0:25Speaker 3: Draft Countdown presented by bud Light. Bud Light Easy to Drink,
- 0:28Speaker 3: Easy to Enjoy, the official beer sponsor of the New
- 0:30Speaker 3: England Patriots. And a lot going on today, Evan. We
- 0:33Speaker 3: heard from Elliott Wolfe. We heard from the defensive front seven,
- 0:36Speaker 3: a really stacked position group here in this draft class,
- 0:38Speaker 3: which I was excited about. Things got a little delayed
- 0:40Speaker 3: at times, but otherwise it was pretty smooth sailing. A
- 0:43Speaker 3: lot of appealing prospects to take a look at today.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Well, you just said it.
- 0:47Speaker 4: You know, I've been coming to the combine a little
- 0:48Speaker 4: bit now because I'm getting old dudes too, and I
- 0:52Speaker 4: haven't seen a delay like that often. And I was
- 0:54Speaker 4: thinking to myself, what's going on? And we both were thinking,
- 0:57Speaker 4: and I was like, oh, right, there's like one hundred
- 0:59Speaker 4: defensive linemani here and so they were trying to crank
- 1:02Speaker 4: them all through. I think it's forty two is the
- 1:05Speaker 4: exact number. And you know, Elliot Wolf, we're going to
- 1:08Speaker 4: get to him in a second. That was right off
- 1:10Speaker 4: the bat. You know, one of the things that he
- 1:11Speaker 4: said is a strength of this class is the defensive
- 1:14Speaker 4: line in the front seven talent. So whether the Patriots
- 1:17Speaker 4: addressed early with an Abdul Carter or something like that,
- 1:20Speaker 4: or it's later on in the draft, there starter caliber
- 1:23Speaker 4: talent at all. Three days of the draft on the
- 1:26Speaker 4: defensive front.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Pretty exciting. Well, let's not waste any time. Let's get
- 1:28Speaker 3: right into Elliot Wolf. He spoke first at the podium
- 1:30Speaker 3: and then he came and join us for a brief interview.
- 1:33Speaker 3: So we're gonna roll that right now. There'll be plenty
- 1:35Speaker 3: to talk about right after all. Right, we're excited to
- 1:37Speaker 3: be joined by Elliot Wolf. Now, Elliott, thanks for sitting
- 1:39Speaker 3: down with us again, second year in a row.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I appreciate it. So you just set up with
- 1:42Speaker 2: the podium. This is your thirty first combine.
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm just curious, what is a fourteen year old Elliott
- 1:46Speaker 3: Wolf doing at the combine?
- 1:47Speaker 2: Are you going to Elmo's? Are you timing guys? Forties? Like,
- 1:49Speaker 2: what was that experience like for you as a kid. Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 2: it was really cool.
- 1:52Speaker 5: I mean, you know, obviously having the advantage of my
- 1:54Speaker 5: father working in the business like I was. I was
- 1:57Speaker 5: the spoiled brat that was running around here kind of
- 1:59Speaker 5: doing whatever I wanted. I would be with him, going
- 2:02Speaker 5: to workouts time in forties. As I got a little
- 2:05Speaker 5: bit older, I was a sandwich guy. I would go
- 2:06Speaker 5: and get everyone sandwiches before they sold food in the dome.
- 2:09Speaker 5: So you know, I kind of started at the bottom
- 2:11Speaker 5: in that regard. But you know, I recorded the broad
- 2:13Speaker 5: Jumps for a number of years. As a matter of fact,
- 2:15Speaker 5: one year they lost the official recording and I was
- 2:20Speaker 5: the only person over there recording the broad Jumps. So
- 2:22Speaker 5: I actually actually used my records to get out to
- 2:26Speaker 5: all the other the other teams.
- 2:27Speaker 2: So Clarious it's been good. Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Yeah, here we are thirty one years later, right, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: just generally, how how are things been going? You know,
- 2:33Speaker 3: raybel coming in and you you know, kind of merging
- 2:35Speaker 3: all that together, the processes and you know, new regime
- 2:38Speaker 3: in place.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been good.
- 2:39Speaker 5: So, you know, I didn't I knew Mike a little
- 2:41Speaker 5: bit beforehand, you know, bumping into Prote's he was always
- 2:43Speaker 5: the guy at the prode. He had the big chest
- 2:46Speaker 5: protector on, like beating onlineman trying to see how hard
- 2:48Speaker 5: they hit. So I you know, I kind of knew him,
- 2:50Speaker 5: but I had never had like a meaningful conversation with
- 2:53Speaker 5: him until, you know, until the interview process, and it's
- 2:55Speaker 5: it's been really good. Like he's so genuine and authentic.
- 2:58Speaker 5: He has a vision for the team, none of it's
- 3:01Speaker 5: fluff or bs, Like I'm really encouraged and excited to
- 3:05Speaker 5: be working with them.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Yeah, well that Evan Grillian because we're already talking about you.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Just want to talk prospects with you. Yeah, I'll start
- 3:10Speaker 3: with free agency, then we'll get a little bit into
- 3:12Speaker 3: the draft.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Though.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Just with free agency, you often hear that you fill
- 3:16Speaker 4: needs in free agency and you go best player available
- 3:18Speaker 4: in the draft is like the old cliche.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Do you adhere to that cliche or whatever you want
- 3:22Speaker 2: to call it? Yeah, I don't know if it's a cliche.
- 3:23Speaker 5: I mean I think I think it gives you the
- 3:24Speaker 5: most flexibility, you know, the free agency class obviously has
- 3:28Speaker 5: strengths and weaknesses, as does the draft. But you know,
- 3:30Speaker 5: the more holes you can fill in free agency and
- 3:32Speaker 5: the more depth you can add to the roster, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 5: it gives you a little bit more flexibility.
- 3:36Speaker 4: When you look at number four. You mentioned up at
- 3:38Speaker 4: the podium earlier that not as much clarity. We've kicked
- 3:41Speaker 4: this around that last year. We kind of thought quarterback
- 3:44Speaker 4: right now is a little bit more ambiguity there. What
- 3:47Speaker 4: do you see with the number four overall pick in
- 3:49Speaker 4: this draft at the top in terms of talent?
- 3:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think we'll see again. I'm not
- 3:53Speaker 5: sure what's going to happen in front of us, you know,
- 3:55Speaker 5: not sure what way we'll lean again. You know, we
- 3:58Speaker 5: have the whole free agency period, trade all these other
- 4:01Speaker 5: you know, avenues to acquire talent.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So we'll see what happens.
- 4:04Speaker 3: How much is it about patients, because I feel like
- 4:06Speaker 3: we look at all these big name free agents that
- 4:08Speaker 3: are available, and you say, but then you could maybe
- 4:10Speaker 3: go to the draft and get an edge there, and
- 4:11Speaker 3: you know, how much do you you kind of get
- 4:14Speaker 3: a plan? But I think, as you said on the podium,
- 4:16Speaker 3: you have to be ready to kind of adjust and
- 4:18Speaker 3: attack a two different courts.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's absolutely all about adjusting.
- 4:21Speaker 5: I mean, you know, we may have someone right after
- 4:23Speaker 5: I you know, I get off the podcast here that
- 4:25Speaker 5: that you know from another team that says, hey, this
- 4:27Speaker 5: guy's available now, and you just it's it's about being
- 4:29Speaker 5: prepared and open and ready to explore everything to improve
- 4:32Speaker 5: the roster.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Obviously, you want to improve the roster everywhere, but there
- 4:35Speaker 4: are there a few positions in particular that you look
- 4:37Speaker 4: at that say we really need to address these.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think the Lions are the ones
- 4:40Speaker 5: that stand out offensive line, defensive line. And again, as
- 4:43Speaker 5: I as I said at the podium, it's you know,
- 4:45Speaker 5: everyone talks about the Super Bowl, you know, but Philadelphia's
- 4:48Speaker 5: had a really good offensive and defensive line for a
- 4:50Speaker 5: number of years. Kansas City has two that you know,
- 4:52Speaker 5: they just weren't able to get it done in the end.
- 4:53Speaker 5: But again, it's all about the offensive and defensive line,
- 4:56Speaker 5: and it has been for a long time.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Along those lines, we heard from the defense line today.
- 5:00Speaker 3: The linebacker's really good class.
- 5:02Speaker 2: It seems like.
- 5:03Speaker 3: From your perspective, how do you delineate I mean, you
- 5:06Speaker 3: have big space eaters inside you've got penetrators. You've got
- 5:09Speaker 3: you know, guys who really stout against the run on
- 5:10Speaker 3: the edge, but maybe not pass rush. Yet you got
- 5:12Speaker 3: guys that are pure pass rush. There's just so many
- 5:15Speaker 3: different flavors of guys in the front. I'm sure that
- 5:17Speaker 3: the coaching staff has maybe a style that they're looking
- 5:19Speaker 3: for as well, But how do you separate all that out?
- 5:22Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I think the one thing that coach
- 5:24Speaker 5: talks about a lot, and he's you know, he's kind
- 5:25Speaker 5: of drilled into the scouts so far as his play demeanor,
- 5:28Speaker 5: like who's going hard, who's given effort, who's running the ball,
- 5:31Speaker 5: who's playing physical, who's willing to put their face on somebody,
- 5:34Speaker 5: use their hands, counter all those things. So, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 5: that's just something that that maybe separates whatever style they are,
- 5:40Speaker 5: that separates them and makes them more attractive to us.
- 5:43Speaker 3: It's about the player, not the scheme. I mean that
- 5:45Speaker 3: that seems we talked to Mike yesterday. She seemed like,
- 5:47Speaker 3: let's find the guys them will kind of adjust to what.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Yeah, ultimately, I mean there's you know, there's probably a
- 5:51Speaker 5: handful of players that wouldn't fit what the vision for
- 5:54Speaker 5: the defense wants. To be. But you know, within that,
- 5:56Speaker 5: you know, it's it's about the players, and I feel
- 5:59Speaker 5: confident in Mike, you know, not that I've worked with
- 6:02Speaker 5: them for a long time, but seeing what he did
- 6:03Speaker 5: in Tennessee and Treill Williams with the d line, like
- 6:06Speaker 5: a lot of those guys would improve, you know, just
- 6:08Speaker 5: as a scout watching those guys, so we're confident that
- 6:11Speaker 5: they'll be able to make whoever we bring in work.
- 6:14Speaker 4: When you look at the market and start talking about
- 6:16Speaker 4: wide receivers and that coverage dictating number one guy, you know,
- 6:19Speaker 4: what do you see available out there? Do you feel
- 6:21Speaker 4: like you guys can address that and maybe bring one
- 6:23Speaker 4: of those types of players in here.
- 6:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think I think it's about getting
- 6:26Speaker 5: good players. Like I don't know that you know how
- 6:28Speaker 5: many players are going to be available that fit the
- 6:31Speaker 5: bill that you're talking about. But again, you know there's
- 6:33Speaker 5: plenty of areas to improve, and that would be one
- 6:35Speaker 5: of them.
- 6:36Speaker 3: You mentioned some of the depth that I think the
- 6:38Speaker 3: offensive line and a wide receiver positions kind of in
- 6:40Speaker 3: the middle of the draft. Is it hard to count
- 6:42Speaker 3: on those guys? Are those when you're getting to that,
- 6:44Speaker 3: you know, late Day two early day three? Are you
- 6:47Speaker 3: just trying to get guys you like their traits? But
- 6:49Speaker 3: is it hard to count on those guys to really
- 6:51Speaker 3: come in and make an instant impact.
- 6:52Speaker 2: I think so. I think it can be tough to
- 6:54Speaker 2: count on those guys from day one.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Again, it's about you know, the draft isn't judge in
- 6:57Speaker 5: one year, but you know, to say that we're not
- 7:00Speaker 5: gonna fill this need because we'll just pick a guy
- 7:02Speaker 5: in the fifth round, Like, I don't think that's very realistic.
- 7:04Speaker 2: All right, So what's Elliottoll's official stance on arm length?
- 7:08Speaker 5: My official stance on arm length is it's a tool,
- 7:10Speaker 5: just like any tool that we use to you know, again,
- 7:13Speaker 5: it all comes back to the film. So and I
- 7:15Speaker 5: know you know Mike said this, but but Coach Belichick
- 7:18Speaker 5: was big on this too. It's like there's plenty of
- 7:19Speaker 5: guys that have long arms, but they play like this
- 7:22Speaker 5: and the guys that can maximize their length. And to me,
- 7:26Speaker 5: when you're writing a scouting report, it's more advantageous, like
- 7:29Speaker 5: you can write to the guys good length, but the extension,
- 7:32Speaker 5: the punch that he plays with is more important than
- 7:34Speaker 5: the actual number.
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yeah, it makes sense and just with Travis Hunter. I
- 7:37Speaker 4: wanted to ask you about him specifically because I find
- 7:40Speaker 4: it so fascinating that it is it almost like evaluating
- 7:43Speaker 4: two separate players because he can play two different positions.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Like, how do you kind of scout him? It is?
- 7:48Speaker 5: You know, not to give anything away, but Matt grow
- 7:50Speaker 5: actually wrote two separate YEA scouting reports on it when
- 7:53Speaker 5: he went to Colorado this year. He has one wide
- 7:55Speaker 5: receiver report and one corner report. Now he's the only
- 7:56Speaker 5: one that did that. Everyone else kind of tried to
- 7:59Speaker 5: jam everything into the the space that we had. But
- 8:01Speaker 5: you know, it's tough when you're when you're talking about
- 8:02Speaker 5: a player that does so many different things to try
- 8:05Speaker 5: to fit in.
- 8:05Speaker 3: There, try to match it up, like how would Travis
- 8:07Speaker 3: Hunter the receiver do against Travis Hunter?
- 8:09Speaker 2: Exact exactly exactly. Well, if I don't want to cut it,
- 8:11Speaker 2: if you've got any.
- 8:12Speaker 4: More in there, that's all right, and I'm good.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Now.
- 8:14Speaker 3: We love we love this stuff, We love the combine,
- 8:16Speaker 3: we love seeing all these players. So thanks for sitting
- 8:18Speaker 3: down and providing some insight.
- 8:19Speaker 2: With all right, no proble appreciate it. Thanks, thanks all.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Right, So great stuff from Elliott our second year in row.
- 8:23Speaker 3: We got to chat with him. Forty one years of
- 8:25Speaker 3: the combine. That's pretty pretty crazy. This is my fifth
- 8:27Speaker 3: year thirty one. Sorry thirty one. I mean to get
- 8:29Speaker 3: too much, but this is my fifth and it's it's
- 8:30Speaker 3: already feeling like a lot. But Evan, what what stood
- 8:34Speaker 3: out to you most? I mean some great nuggets in
- 8:35Speaker 3: there from Elliott. Yeah, there were great nuggets.
- 8:37Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing he said that the trenches
- 8:40Speaker 4: on both sides of the ball when we asked him
- 8:42Speaker 4: about off season needs. And I always think that's interesting,
- 8:45Speaker 4: Like we talk a lot about off season needs, but
- 8:47Speaker 4: is that really how they talk? You know? So that's
- 8:48Speaker 4: why I threw that question at him, and he said
- 8:51Speaker 4: the line of scrimmage. And he was quick to say,
- 8:54Speaker 4: it's not just the super Bowl like this has been
- 8:56Speaker 4: a this is football, right, that's where it's won and lost.
- 8:58Speaker 4: And we'll get to some of the problem specs today
- 9:00Speaker 4: that talked at the podium on the defensive line. But
- 9:04Speaker 4: that's a big part of this offseason for both head
- 9:07Speaker 4: coach Mike Rabel and Elliott Wolf is we need to
- 9:09Speaker 4: nail the trenches and it's a great place to start.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, it's where it starts sore football games are one, folks.
- 9:15Speaker 3: That's what that at least that's what they tell me. Yeah,
- 9:17Speaker 3: just to point out though, you know, when Elliott did
- 9:19Speaker 3: go up to the podium, which you can watch that
- 9:21Speaker 3: full podium session as well on Patriots dot Com. You know,
- 9:24Speaker 3: really just accepting responsibility. Not good enough last year, four
- 9:27Speaker 3: wins didn't get enough out of the draft class. I
- 9:30Speaker 3: thought some interesting things about Jalen Polk felt like, you know,
- 9:32Speaker 3: maybe they put too much on him. You know, again,
- 9:34Speaker 3: a guy that I just even we're kind of conflicted
- 9:37Speaker 3: on him, I feel like, because I really liked him
- 9:39Speaker 3: when I first started, and then I think when they
- 9:41Speaker 3: took him where they took him, I was a little
- 9:42Speaker 3: bit like, I don't know about that, but even saying
- 9:45Speaker 3: that he felt like Leyden Robinson maybe played a little
- 9:47Speaker 3: bit more than they thought he would have to.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I mean, interesting nugget there as well.
- 9:51Speaker 3: So I don't think that they've abandoned all hope on
- 9:52Speaker 3: that draft class, and I certainly haven't either. As I've
- 9:55Speaker 3: said on Patriots Unfiltered, they could just get one of
- 9:58Speaker 3: those guys between Kayden Wallace, Leyden Robinson or you know,
- 10:01Speaker 3: even some of the guys from the earlier year city,
- 10:03Speaker 3: so they could just get contribution to have them locked
- 10:05Speaker 3: down one spot. I think they'd be in a pretty
- 10:07Speaker 3: good spot then to go and you know, hopefully in
- 10:09Speaker 3: free agency in the draft, add even more talent to
- 10:11Speaker 3: that offensive line. Right.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I think one of the answers that he gave was
- 10:14Speaker 4: about how they didn't do enough in free agency and
- 10:17Speaker 4: then the draft. And I think that's a way to
- 10:19Speaker 4: put it, because a free agency to me is your
- 10:22Speaker 4: floor of your roster, Like how do you get enough
- 10:25Speaker 4: players in here that are NFL starting caliber type of
- 10:28Speaker 4: players so that when you get to the draft, you're
- 10:30Speaker 4: just drafting best player available and stacking real talent at
- 10:34Speaker 4: the top of the board, especially like where the Patriots are.
- 10:37Speaker 4: So when you look at the Patriots last season, it
- 10:40Speaker 4: felt like in the offseason they left the door open
- 10:43Speaker 4: that the draft is going to kind of have to
- 10:45Speaker 4: come in and rescue the day. Right, Like it was
- 10:46Speaker 4: gonna the quarter spot to be the quarterback was gonna
- 10:49Speaker 4: have to hit, they were gonna have to hit on
- 10:51Speaker 4: a top flight wide receiver, They're gonna have to hit
- 10:53Speaker 4: on a left tackle. Because all these things kind of
- 10:56Speaker 4: slipped through the cracks for them in free agencies. So
- 10:59Speaker 4: looking at it this time around, my expectation is to
- 11:02Speaker 4: follow more of that Commander's model of let's go out
- 11:05Speaker 4: and get like eight to ten guys that we know
- 11:08Speaker 4: can play in this league at this level. And yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 4: maybe the tackle we sign isn't going to be the
- 11:14Speaker 4: next Joe Thomas and he's not going to be a
- 11:16Speaker 4: Hall of Famer, But we'll go in the draft and
- 11:19Speaker 4: we'll draft for upside, and we'll draft for talent, and
- 11:21Speaker 4: hopefully we can develop a long term solution at some
- 11:24Speaker 4: of these positions.
- 11:25Speaker 2: In the draft.
- 11:25Speaker 3: The other thing I got to bring up, great question
- 11:27Speaker 3: from you just about Travis Hunter, and yeah, nice little
- 11:29Speaker 3: nugget there from Elliott about them, you know, writing up
- 11:31Speaker 3: two separate scouting reports from Travis Hunter. That's a really
- 11:34Speaker 3: cool way to kind of go about it. And I mean,
- 11:36Speaker 3: it just illustrates what a special player he is. I'm
- 11:38Speaker 3: sure if he were to fall the four, it seems
- 11:40Speaker 3: to me like that that will be pretty much a
- 11:42Speaker 3: no brainer.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean Andrew Berry the Browns GM yesterday, I
- 11:45Speaker 4: said that he used him as a wide receiver. The
- 11:47Speaker 4: Titans general manager said a corner Elliott said that he
- 11:49Speaker 4: can play both ways. He thinks in the NFL, there's
- 11:52Speaker 4: a scenario there. So there's all different answers across the
- 11:55Speaker 4: board of where he best fits. And I love that nugget,
- 11:58Speaker 4: and I think that's fascinating that you basically have to
- 12:01Speaker 4: treat him as two separate players and look at it
- 12:04Speaker 4: that direction.
- 12:04Speaker 2: And it's gonna be so interesting to me.
- 12:07Speaker 4: When we talked to Travis Hunter later this week, what's
- 12:10Speaker 4: his message like, is he locked down to one position
- 12:13Speaker 4: or at least majoring in one position already, He's gonna
- 12:17Speaker 4: work out what the corner is the defensive back. So
- 12:19Speaker 4: maybe that's a little bit of a tea leave of
- 12:21Speaker 4: where this is headed. But I do think there are
- 12:23Speaker 4: people that believe that he can be a better wide receiver,
- 12:26Speaker 4: at least be a good enough wide receiver that it's
- 12:28Speaker 4: worth it to pay him on that side.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Of the ball.
- 12:30Speaker 3: So he's one of two big names to the top
- 12:31Speaker 3: of the draft that we always kind of talk about.
- 12:33Speaker 3: It's him and Abdul Carter. Abdul Carter kick things off
- 12:36Speaker 3: this morning, bright and early eight am.
- 12:37Speaker 2: We were here to here from Abdul Carter.
- 12:40Speaker 3: The thing I've noticed Evan this being my fifth combine
- 12:43Speaker 3: is some guys just project You're like, this is a
- 12:45Speaker 3: dude who can play in the league, And you know,
- 12:46Speaker 3: even if you did never watch him play, you could
- 12:48Speaker 3: probably walk through here and be like, yeah, he can play,
- 12:50Speaker 3: he can play, And certainly abdul Carter just gave that
- 12:53Speaker 3: vibe off of a dude who can play and who's
- 12:56Speaker 3: gonna help a team.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I mean like the tape speaks for itself with him,
- 13:00Speaker 4: he is a fantastic athlete. I think the one thing
- 13:02Speaker 4: that you look at when you watch a guy like
- 13:04Speaker 4: abdel Carter is you want to see the guys that
- 13:05Speaker 4: move differently, and he's just one of those guys that
- 13:09Speaker 4: just moves differently. He's a different breed of athlete than
- 13:13Speaker 4: a lot of other players in this draft in particular.
- 13:16Speaker 4: But I thought was really interesting from what he said
- 13:18Speaker 4: is that his favorite player that he tries to emulate
- 13:21Speaker 4: his game after is Von Miller. He gets a lot
- 13:23Speaker 4: of Michael Parsons comparisons, Number eleven, Penn State, like that
- 13:27Speaker 4: whole thing, but he seems to feel like he more
- 13:30Speaker 4: looks like Von Miller, Like that's who he tries to
- 13:33Speaker 4: emulate his game after. So I thought that was interesting
- 13:35Speaker 4: because I can definitely see that comparison as well.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Talk about some of these other guys, I gotta mention
- 13:39Speaker 3: I brought them up before, but the two Georgia guys again,
- 13:42Speaker 3: they just have the vibe of dudes who can play
- 13:44Speaker 3: in the league. I'm talking about Mikel Williams and Jalen Walker. Yep,
- 13:50Speaker 3: they all sound the same. I mean there's like Trayvon
- 13:51Speaker 3: Walker a couple of years ago, Jalen Walker, yeah, always,
- 13:54Speaker 3: but those two guys to me and different guys I feel.
- 13:57Speaker 3: And even Mikel Williams said he felt like he's more
- 13:59Speaker 3: of a defensive end, probably more of a handdown that
- 14:02Speaker 3: kind of a player, whereas Jalen Walker saying, hey, where
- 14:04Speaker 3: do you want me to play?
- 14:05Speaker 2: You want to be playing the slot?
- 14:05Speaker 3: You want me to play on the edge, off the ball,
- 14:08Speaker 3: wherever they need to put him, And it's a pipe
- 14:10Speaker 3: dream of mine. But I'm like, I just thick those
- 14:12Speaker 3: two guys on the defense right now for the Patriots.
- 14:14Speaker 3: They've fit in great, you know, but those two guys
- 14:16Speaker 3: really stood out to me. And as I think Philadelphia
- 14:18Speaker 3: approved in the Super Bowl, you can't go wrong drafting
- 14:20Speaker 3: guys from Georgia.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Yeah, so, Jalen Walker I think is a top five
- 14:23Speaker 4: player in this class. He's a tremendous talent. And what
- 14:26Speaker 4: I love so much about him is that he can
- 14:29Speaker 4: play in all situations from various alignments. He said, He's
- 14:32Speaker 4: played four different positions in the Georgia defense, so he
- 14:36Speaker 4: can play off the ball, linebacker, edge rusher, in line rusher,
- 14:39Speaker 4: nickel like, he can just play anywhere and as a
- 14:42Speaker 4: matchup player, as a down in distance situational player as well.
- 14:47Speaker 4: When you have a head coach like Mike Rabel that
- 14:49Speaker 4: you feel good about using a player like that and
- 14:51Speaker 4: knowing how to implement his talents, You feel good about
- 14:55Speaker 4: a player like that.
- 14:56Speaker 2: For the Patriots.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Mikel Williams I think is interesting too, just because of
- 14:59Speaker 4: Trell Williams, the Patriots defensive coordinator. His background isn't developing
- 15:03Speaker 4: defensive lineman. It's an aggressive defensive lineman and coaching those
- 15:08Speaker 4: guys up and all that kind of stuff. And Mikel
- 15:11Speaker 4: Williams right now is a ball of clay.
- 15:13Speaker 2: You know, he's a little raw.
- 15:14Speaker 4: His hand technique and his hand fighting needs some work,
- 15:16Speaker 4: and he kind of needs a plan when he rushes
- 15:18Speaker 4: the passer that he doesn't have right now, but every
- 15:21Speaker 4: five plays you just see him do something freaky like
- 15:24Speaker 4: where you're just like, okay, well there it is.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Last thing on him.
- 15:28Speaker 4: The Georgia defensive front, they play a lot of five technique,
- 15:31Speaker 4: as we know around here, a defensive ends so straight
- 15:34Speaker 4: up over the tackle, and when you play over the tackle,
- 15:37Speaker 4: you're not going to get as many sacks as the
- 15:39Speaker 4: guys that are playing from the seven or the nine
- 15:40Speaker 4: technique all the way outside, So they don't necessarily have
- 15:45Speaker 4: defensive ends in that system that put up gaudy sack
- 15:48Speaker 4: totals in college, like Treyvon Walker is another one that
- 15:51Speaker 4: had modest production at the college level, like mikel Williams.
- 15:54Speaker 4: A lot of that is because of the role in
- 15:56Speaker 4: the style of defense. It's actually pretty BELLICHICKI in the
- 15:59Speaker 4: way that Kirby's plays defense, so that you have to
- 16:02Speaker 4: take that into account too. If you're going to draft
- 16:04Speaker 4: a guy like Mike cal Williams and you're gonna put
- 16:06Speaker 4: him out wide nine in the four to three all
- 16:08Speaker 4: game long and just let him t off, he's going
- 16:10Speaker 4: to have a different level of production than he did
- 16:12Speaker 4: At Georgia.
- 16:12Speaker 2: They want to stick a stick in the SEC. I
- 16:14Speaker 2: guess Texas A and M.
- 16:16Speaker 3: But Shamar Stewart and Nick Scarton are two guys that
- 16:18Speaker 3: I just I've really gravitated towards early on watching those guys,
- 16:22Speaker 3: and both really impressed me today as well. I think, again,
- 16:25Speaker 3: those are, you know, different guys, and especially especially with Scorton,
- 16:29Speaker 3: he's just so disruptive. I mean, he's just a big
- 16:31Speaker 3: dude and again a little raw like seems like you
- 16:33Speaker 3: need to rain him in maybe a little bit. But
- 16:35Speaker 3: when you have these needs along the defensive line with
- 16:37Speaker 3: the Patriots, and as Elliott said, it's it's hard not
- 16:40Speaker 3: to look at every one of these guys that really
- 16:42Speaker 3: looks like they're making an impact and say, come come
- 16:44Speaker 3: to New England.
- 16:44Speaker 2: We need these kind of guys. Yeah.
- 16:46Speaker 4: So Shamar Stewart is going to be an unbelievable tester.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I'm naming all first round picks by these. We can
- 16:51Speaker 4: get into the that, but he's going to be an
- 16:55Speaker 4: unbelievable tester. And there are some people, you know, you
- 16:57Speaker 4: read some of these guys like Dan Brugler and stuff
- 17:00Speaker 4: like that, that assume that after he works out tomorrow night,
- 17:03Speaker 4: all of a sudden everybody the top ten buzz is
- 17:06Speaker 4: going to start and just to go back to tray
- 17:08Speaker 4: Von Walker for a second, that's this is sort of
- 17:10Speaker 4: when that started for him.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Number one overall pick.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I don't know if Stuart's going to get all the
- 17:13Speaker 4: way up there, but it just sounds like to me
- 17:17Speaker 4: that this is going to be a freaky ninety ninth
- 17:19Speaker 4: percentile combine athlete that everybody's going to be like, holy crap,
- 17:24Speaker 4: Like why you know, this guy's got an immense ceiling.
- 17:27Speaker 4: So we'll see what that with scort And he's just
- 17:30Speaker 4: a ball on fire right.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a state.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Of power, aggressive downhill, bring your lunch pale, you know,
- 17:38Speaker 4: type of guy. And that's obviously very attractive too. What
- 17:41Speaker 4: I like about him as well is that you can
- 17:43Speaker 4: move him around the defensive front. You know, he's not
- 17:45Speaker 4: going to be just somebody that plays on the edge.
- 17:48Speaker 4: I love, you know, the old high tower lineup over
- 17:50Speaker 4: the guard or center, use your quickness on the inside.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I think Scorton can do that sort of thing.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Two more guys I just want to bring up Mike
- 17:57Speaker 3: Green heard from him as well, and James Pearcere kind
- 18:00Speaker 3: of guys edge rush types. But again, I think it
- 18:02Speaker 3: just illustrates the depth of this class and how many
- 18:05Speaker 3: different options there are even as you get down, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 3: into the late first round, and maybe, you know, maybe
- 18:10Speaker 3: that is an option for the Patriots trade back up,
- 18:12Speaker 3: you know, and try to grab one of these guys.
- 18:14Speaker 2: It's one question we.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Didn't get to ask elliott I Gotta make a note task.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Him next time.
- 18:18Speaker 3: But you know, when you have these deep classes like this,
- 18:21Speaker 3: do you strike early and get the best one of
- 18:22Speaker 3: the group, or do you say there's a bunch of them,
- 18:24Speaker 3: we like them all. Yeah, you know, it's just it's
- 18:26Speaker 3: a hard way to kind of balance things.
- 18:27Speaker 4: It is, And I find myself going back and forth
- 18:30Speaker 4: on it too, because we'll probably get to Mason Graham
- 18:32Speaker 4: here in a second as well. It's yeah, like those
- 18:34Speaker 4: are great players at the top, but the drop off
- 18:38Speaker 4: at tackle or the drop off at wide receiver might
- 18:42Speaker 4: be a lot bigger from first round to second round.
- 18:46Speaker 4: So well, Campbell to let's just use names to Arianti
- 18:50Speaker 4: Ursrie might be a much bigger drop off than Mason
- 18:54Speaker 4: Graham to you know, one of the guys we've been
- 18:56Speaker 4: talking about here on the defensive line.
- 18:58Speaker 2: So that had some they know you.
- 19:00Speaker 4: I do think you have to weigh a little bit
- 19:02Speaker 4: because they're going to be starters in day two on
- 19:04Speaker 4: the defensive line. There might not be starters on day
- 19:07Speaker 4: two on the offensive line, especially at left tackle.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Let's talk about Mason Graham now, because I think I
- 19:12Speaker 3: kind of polarizing. I feeling that's that's what it is,
- 19:15Speaker 3: although I don't differing opinions. Well it's I mean, look,
- 19:20Speaker 3: he's not he's not key on White. He doesn't have
- 19:22Speaker 3: the key on white. First off, the bus kind of
- 19:24Speaker 3: look to him that vibe of like, oh man, this
- 19:26Speaker 3: is a scary football team coming at us. But anybody
- 19:28Speaker 3: who watches him knows like he can play. He's a
- 19:30Speaker 3: fast player. And when you hear what Elliott Wolf is
- 19:33Speaker 3: saying about what Terrell Williams values, what Mike Rabel values,
- 19:36Speaker 3: it's about disruption.
- 19:37Speaker 2: It's about guys who play fast and aggressive.
- 19:39Speaker 3: And Mason Graham, even though he might not look at
- 19:41Speaker 3: when he's standing up there at podium, that's kind of
- 19:44Speaker 3: what he does. So it's on one hand, it's easy
- 19:46Speaker 3: to make the case, and on the other hand, you
- 19:48Speaker 3: look at all these other guys and you're like, yeah,
- 19:49Speaker 3: but there's other edge guys or other interior guys that
- 19:53Speaker 3: and I actually I got to take that back because
- 19:54Speaker 3: I think he's he's kind of stands alone as far
- 19:56Speaker 3: as an interior guy, but you know, edge guys off
- 19:58Speaker 3: the ball, there are some other option later.
- 20:00Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I think he's he's a really interesting guy that we're
- 20:02Speaker 3: gonna be talking a lot about these next few months.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Yeah, when we talk about number four, we always bring
- 20:06Speaker 4: up blue chip prospects, and some of the people that
- 20:09Speaker 4: we've talked to here have said that he should be
- 20:11Speaker 4: considered a blue chip prospect. I was I was kind
- 20:14Speaker 4: of surprised about that. We have Jordan Reid coming up
- 20:16Speaker 4: here later in the week and he feels that way
- 20:18Speaker 4: about Mason Graham. So he's one of those players that
- 20:22Speaker 4: if Bill Belichick was still drafting for the Patriots, I
- 20:25Speaker 4: feel like he would be the guy because he's not
- 20:28Speaker 4: going to be the first off the bus guy. He's
- 20:30Speaker 4: not gonna win the combine, he's not gonna do any
- 20:33Speaker 4: of the flashy things that we kind of get attracted
- 20:36Speaker 4: to sometimes this time of year. In over eight, frankly
- 20:39Speaker 4: this time of year a little bit, he's gonna be
- 20:41Speaker 4: good on tape, and he's gonna be quiet, and he's
- 20:44Speaker 4: gonna go about his business and he's gonna work hard
- 20:47Speaker 4: a lot like Christian Gonzalez or Keon White or somebody
- 20:50Speaker 4: like that. Now, I don't know if Frabell will you know,
- 20:54Speaker 4: gravitate towards that same style of player, because I agree
- 20:57Speaker 4: on film, you know, effort and finish for the two
- 20:59Speaker 4: big things that they preach with this you know, new regime,
- 21:03Speaker 4: and he checks both those boxes in spades, like that's
- 21:06Speaker 4: what his game is all about. But do I look
- 21:09Speaker 4: at him and say that's a franchise pillar, a leader
- 21:12Speaker 4: of the organization for the next decade, that sort of thing. No,
- 21:16Speaker 4: But it's also probably unfair to put that on him. Yeah,
- 21:18Speaker 4: So who else have I missed here today? Anybody else
- 21:20Speaker 4: that that that we want to talk about? I mean,
- 21:22Speaker 4: there it is.
- 21:23Speaker 3: It is a talented class, and we touched a lot
- 21:24Speaker 3: on like the top guys, which, let's face it, maybe
- 21:26Speaker 3: they get patriots without shot at one of these, one
- 21:28Speaker 3: of these guys we're talking about, unless they trade down.
- 21:30Speaker 3: But anyone else I missed or anyone else of this
- 21:32Speaker 3: group that stands out to you, just a couple of
- 21:34Speaker 3: the linebackers, I thought, you know, we're really impressive. Jihad
- 21:37Speaker 3: Campbell from Alabama is a guy that's really fascinating to me.
- 21:41Speaker 3: I think he's going to be a really good athlete,
- 21:43Speaker 3: a really good tester here. And he's got great tape,
- 21:45Speaker 3: but it's streaky, you know, some games is better than others.
- 21:48Speaker 3: But I think he's got a lot of those same
- 21:51Speaker 3: Patriots style linebacker trades where he can kind of do
- 21:54Speaker 3: a little bit of everything.
- 21:55Speaker 2: You know he can.
- 21:55Speaker 4: He has a size in the in the play strength
- 21:58Speaker 4: and the speed, the power to play the run and
- 22:00Speaker 4: fill gaps and come downhill at the line of scrimmage.
- 22:02Speaker 4: But he can also cover and play in space. He
- 22:04Speaker 4: can rush the quarterback, he can spy the quarterback. And
- 22:08Speaker 4: although I understand we're all thinking offense, defensive line wide
- 22:12Speaker 4: receiver one, all those different type of things, having that
- 22:14Speaker 4: playmaking linebacker at the second level, I don't know if
- 22:17Speaker 4: they'd necessarily have that either, right, you know, and somebody
- 22:19Speaker 4: that can truly go sideline to sideline or chase down
- 22:22Speaker 4: a mobile quarterback and know when Josh Allen goes to
- 22:24Speaker 4: scramble and you know now it's first down, so you
- 22:27Speaker 4: have your run personnel on the field and you're trying
- 22:29Speaker 4: to get guys that are two hundred and fifty two
- 22:31Speaker 4: hundred and fifty five pounds to chase down Josh Allen,
- 22:34Speaker 4: this is a guy that's a really, really good athlete.
- 22:36Speaker 2: The other one Jeffrey Bossa from Oregon.
- 22:39Speaker 4: I think that he's another guy that really stood out
- 22:41Speaker 4: to me at the podium and on film as well
- 22:44Speaker 4: as a coverage linebacker.
- 22:45Speaker 2: He used to play safety.
- 22:46Speaker 4: Now he's going to play linebacker, off ball linebacker in
- 22:49Speaker 4: the league. He's talking about Fred Warner, of course, is
- 22:51Speaker 4: kind of like the poster child for that sort of thing.
- 22:54Speaker 4: And I think if you're looking for somebody that you
- 22:56Speaker 4: can run the scene and cover two and carry tight
- 22:59Speaker 4: ends vertical and you all that good stuff, than he's
- 23:01Speaker 4: somebody like that.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 3: That's a lot coming at us today, but and a
- 23:04Speaker 3: lot of the draft stuff. So we're, you know, glad
- 23:06Speaker 3: to share a bunch of that draft stuff the Elliot
- 23:08Speaker 3: interview as well. But we also had a chance to
- 23:09Speaker 3: sit down with Mike Rereas of ESPN. Of course that
- 23:11Speaker 3: needs no introduction. Did the legend out Mike gees himself
- 23:14Speaker 3: to really just drill down on some of the Patriots stuff,
- 23:16Speaker 3: So you check out that interview right here. All right,
- 23:18Speaker 3: we're excited to be joined by Mike Greasi ESPN. Mike,
- 23:20Speaker 3: thanks for sitting down with us here at the Commine.
- 23:22Speaker 6: Mike Evan, great to be da.
- 23:23Speaker 2: No introduction, I know it needs no introduction.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I said, it might have been like back the
- 23:27Speaker 3: old blogger podcast days, the last time we had like
- 23:30Speaker 3: you for a one on one conversation.
- 23:32Speaker 2: So thank you for that back in the day. Uh.
- 23:35Speaker 3: But just to start off, Mike, you know, I know
- 23:37Speaker 3: you covered Mike Rabel for a long time as a player.
- 23:39Speaker 3: What have you seen from him in the first few
- 23:41Speaker 3: months here as a coach?
- 23:42Speaker 6: So I feel like a lot of energy, a lot
- 23:45Speaker 6: of clear vision on what he wants to do, and
- 23:50Speaker 6: I think the experience stands out to me. This is
- 23:54Speaker 6: someone that's done it before, knows the steps to take,
- 23:58Speaker 6: and it's been sort of refreshing. It's the word that
- 24:01Speaker 6: I would use.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yeah, was what was your experience like just covering him
- 24:04Speaker 3: as a player. I mean a lot of reporters have
- 24:06Speaker 3: great stories about covering Mike Rabel.
- 24:08Speaker 2: But what was it like for you?
- 24:09Speaker 6: So let's start with where his spot was in the
- 24:11Speaker 6: locker room right, because that's the first thing that I
- 24:13Speaker 6: think about, is when we would all be gathered around.
- 24:16Speaker 6: So he would have been where Christian Ellis is. So
- 24:21Speaker 6: for those who are listening or watching this, this is
- 24:25Speaker 6: down close to where Teddy Bruski used to be. That's
- 24:30Speaker 6: the corner locker going into like the.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Meeting room right where Jawan Bentley is.
- 24:34Speaker 6: Jawan Bentley in that area. So and we would gather
- 24:37Speaker 6: around and you had to be, let's see, not sensitive
- 24:43Speaker 6: when you were gathered around Mike Rabel. You had to
- 24:47Speaker 6: be ready for the quick wit. And I would say,
- 24:49Speaker 6: not much has changed now that we're back to and
- 24:52Speaker 6: he's the coach.
- 24:54Speaker 4: It's absolutely true. I one of the things I was
- 24:56Speaker 4: wondering with Rabel here. Obviously they have all this space.
- 25:00Speaker 4: They had a lot of caps based last off season.
- 25:02Speaker 4: We saw how that went, you know, trying to attract
- 25:04Speaker 4: free agents to come here. In your experience knowing Mike,
- 25:08Speaker 4: do you feel like he can be a great recruiter
- 25:10Speaker 4: of some of the talent that maybe is out there
- 25:13Speaker 4: and try to sway people to actually come to New England,
- 25:15Speaker 4: Because I, let's face it right now, I think being
- 25:17Speaker 4: a destination is something they're struggling with a little bit.
- 25:20Speaker 6: So I do think he can be that, and for
- 25:22Speaker 6: those that are watching us, we should let them know that.
- 25:25Speaker 6: The last question that Mike took in our gathering after
- 25:30Speaker 6: the press conference on Tuesday was Evan talking about being
- 25:34Speaker 6: a recruiter, and Mike told the story I don't know
- 25:37Speaker 6: if he told it when he was on with you
- 25:38Speaker 6: guys about how he was at Houston and Houston had
- 25:42Speaker 6: some natural grass in their dome and Mike Rabel, who's
- 25:46Speaker 6: an assistant coach, says to Bill O'Brien, what do you
- 25:50Speaker 6: have this natural grass? And the dome for Bill O'Brien goes,
- 25:53Speaker 6: I think it'd be great for recruiting free agents, and
- 25:56Speaker 6: Rabel says to Bill O'Brien, the only green that free
- 26:00Speaker 6: agents care about is the cash. So I think the
- 26:04Speaker 6: cash is to use that story, the cash is the
- 26:06Speaker 6: great recruiter. But in a tiebreaker, Mike Rabel can be
- 26:10Speaker 6: a great salesperson. Yeah, and I think it's genuine Evan, Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 6: like I do think it's genuine.
- 26:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that that was one of the takeaways
- 26:17Speaker 4: that I had just listening to him talk. If you
- 26:19Speaker 4: are looking for that tie breaker. This is an intense guy,
- 26:22Speaker 4: and this is a guy that you could see yourself
- 26:24Speaker 4: as an athlete playing for. And not to say that
- 26:28Speaker 4: other coaches couldn't maybe do the same thing, but there's
- 26:31Speaker 4: just between him and really Drake May Like I feel
- 26:33Speaker 4: like those are the two things in money obviously that
- 26:35Speaker 4: they have going for them right now. So it's been
- 26:38Speaker 4: interesting to see, you know, how he can kind of
- 26:40Speaker 4: talk and has that gravitas and a little bit of that,
- 26:44Speaker 4: you know, just appeal from a player perspective.
- 26:46Speaker 6: And I think the other thing, if it works out
- 26:49Speaker 6: in the Patriots favor, that they have going for them
- 26:52Speaker 6: is the culture that he had established in Tennessee. So
- 26:57Speaker 6: if players hear about that and that like so Taylor Lawan, right, like,
- 27:02Speaker 6: I'm sure you followed him on X and and and
- 27:04Speaker 6: his stories about that. Will Compton, right am, I correct
- 27:09Speaker 6: me if I slip up here. These are players that
- 27:12Speaker 6: had experienced it, that are out there in the public,
- 27:16Speaker 6: you know, talking about what they got out of it,
- 27:19Speaker 6: even if they might have been a little skeptical at
- 27:21Speaker 6: the start, right, And so that can also be something
- 27:24Speaker 6: a player that wants to be part of that culture.
- 27:26Speaker 6: How about for us, like I know with Mike, I
- 27:29Speaker 6: better be sharp when I'm coming out better are my
- 27:31Speaker 6: questions ready?
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah? You know.
- 27:33Speaker 6: Like so, just as it's like raising hopefully raising your
- 27:37Speaker 6: game as a reporter someone covering the team, you want
- 27:40Speaker 6: to raise your game as a player like this guy.
- 27:44Speaker 6: This might be a guy you want to align with.
- 27:46Speaker 3: Yea, Mike. We get so caught up in free agency
- 27:48Speaker 3: coming up and T Higgins and Ronnie Stanley and the
- 27:51Speaker 3: big names, and then you slowly start to heal and
- 27:53Speaker 3: all these guys are going to resign or you know,
- 27:55Speaker 3: and then you talk about the draft, and we talk
- 27:57Speaker 3: about Abdul Carter and you know, there's just a lot
- 27:59Speaker 3: of name that you get excited about.
- 28:01Speaker 2: But throwing all the names apart.
- 28:03Speaker 3: What does this Patriots team need? I mean, what do
- 28:05Speaker 3: they need to add personnel wise, whether it's free agency,
- 28:07Speaker 3: the draft. When you get out of the spring, what
- 28:09Speaker 3: do you want to see this team pick up?
- 28:11Speaker 6: Well? I feel like the line of scrimmage would be
- 28:13Speaker 6: where I would start if you and and if Ronnie
- 28:16Speaker 6: Stanley comes available to me, Evan, we were talking about
- 28:19Speaker 6: this like that would be a great one to just say,
- 28:21Speaker 6: oh bam, left tackle squared away taken care of and
- 28:25Speaker 6: I thought one of the things Mike said that I
- 28:27Speaker 6: liked that I agree with the Super Bowl was one
- 28:29Speaker 6: at the line of scrimmage. I think the Patriots are
- 28:31Speaker 6: weak at the line of scrimmage right now, and that's
- 28:33Speaker 6: where I would start.
- 28:34Speaker 4: Yeah. He mentioned too that they wanted to try to
- 28:37Speaker 4: use free agency so that they can get to the
- 28:39Speaker 4: draft and just take the best player available, not have
- 28:42Speaker 4: to necessarily reach on a player like that. We talked
- 28:44Speaker 4: a little bit about Ronnie Stanley last night and him
- 28:47Speaker 4: potentially being available. I think the Ravens are obviously interested
- 28:51Speaker 4: in keeping him, so see where that goes. Just do
- 28:54Speaker 4: you have a sense at all though of you know,
- 28:56Speaker 4: some of the names that might actually get to free
- 28:57Speaker 4: agency that you would be interested in.
- 28:59Speaker 6: So Ronnie Stanley would be at the top of my list.
- 29:02Speaker 6: Milton Williams would be another. I think the thing on
- 29:05Speaker 6: that is, what is the number right? Well, would it
- 29:08Speaker 6: go over Christian Barmore? Should it go over Christian Barmore,
- 29:13Speaker 6: that would be the next one on my list. I
- 29:14Speaker 6: don't still still considering Josh Sweat and if that would
- 29:19Speaker 6: be a fit, to be honest, even at the lower
- 29:22Speaker 6: financial level, I mean, would you consider judon coming back.
- 29:26Speaker 6: You know, I'm not saying I would, but like just
- 29:28Speaker 6: names like that that I've thought about and pretty much
- 29:31Speaker 6: almost everyone is at the line of scrimmage. Another one
- 29:36Speaker 6: I'd like Steph I like Stefan Diggs. I've always been
- 29:39Speaker 6: a Digs fan. I don't know what the financial level
- 29:42Speaker 6: on that would be, but I'd consider looking into that
- 29:45Speaker 6: one myself.
- 29:45Speaker 3: What about when you look internally at this team and
- 29:48Speaker 3: we verybel got some questions today about scheme changes and
- 29:51Speaker 3: all those kinds of things. But you know, do you
- 29:53Speaker 3: look at this team as it is right now? And
- 29:54Speaker 3: he said it today, he said, the team's going to
- 29:56Speaker 3: look very different at the end of August. Do you
- 29:58Speaker 3: think that there's some maneuvering to be done on the
- 30:00Speaker 3: roster the guys that are already here, guys that are
- 30:02Speaker 3: under contract, meaning that they might not be around perhaps perhaps,
- 30:06Speaker 3: I mean, you know, I think any you know, coach
- 30:08Speaker 3: comes in, he's got to adjust things. And certainly a
- 30:11Speaker 3: lot of those players connect back to Bill and you
- 30:13Speaker 3: would think, like tough, you know, versatile players, everybody's kind
- 30:16Speaker 3: of in the market for those. But at the same time,
- 30:17Speaker 3: Mike's got his own philosophies that he's gonna come in with.
- 30:20Speaker 3: And I'm just I don't think anything needs to happen immediately,
- 30:23Speaker 3: but it feels like they really need to take inventory
- 30:26Speaker 3: of who we have and who are the guys that
- 30:27Speaker 3: we're going to move forward with I think so, and
- 30:29Speaker 3: also how they're going to play. So applying this conversation,
- 30:33Speaker 3: one thing Mike Vrabel said that stood out to me.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Terrell Williams is a very aggressive defensive coach. So when
- 30:39Speaker 3: I hear that, well, the defense is going to be
- 30:42Speaker 3: playing differently than it has in the past. So what
- 30:44Speaker 3: does that mean for Dietrich wise free agent? What does
- 30:47Speaker 3: that mean for Jonathan Jones?
- 30:49Speaker 6: Mike, we're able to talk about how important the nickel
- 30:51Speaker 6: position is in today's game, Like, is.
- 30:55Speaker 3: That Marcus Jones?
- 30:55Speaker 6: Marcus Jones? Is it Jonathan Jones? Is it someone else?
- 30:58Speaker 6: Maybe it's it's I'm not saying DJ Reid would be
- 31:01Speaker 6: a slot, but does that make a corner? You know,
- 31:04Speaker 6: if some of your other options in free agency that
- 31:06Speaker 6: maybe are at the line on the lines don't work out,
- 31:10Speaker 6: maybe you redirect the money. So I think that's what
- 31:13Speaker 6: that's where my mind is racing, is how they'll play
- 31:16Speaker 6: differently on defense. I think offensively, they just need players
- 31:21Speaker 6: no matter what the scheme is. If that makes sense.
- 31:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that that Nickels spot is interesting because
- 31:26Speaker 4: I think a lot of teams nowadays are going to
- 31:29Speaker 4: more like safety body types in the nickel instead of
- 31:32Speaker 4: true corners. Because with all these like Shanahan inspired offenses,
- 31:36Speaker 4: you have the wide zone teams going outside the numbers
- 31:38Speaker 4: and trying to run to the numbers. And if you're
- 31:41Speaker 4: gonna do that, like you need to set the edge
- 31:43Speaker 4: of the defense and force the ball back inside. So
- 31:45Speaker 4: instead of having you know, guy like Jonathan Jones or
- 31:47Speaker 4: Marcus Jones who's undersize and isn't really going to be
- 31:49Speaker 4: able to do that, you have more like CJ. Gardner
- 31:52Speaker 4: Johnson types that can actually push the ball back inside
- 31:55Speaker 4: to the defense. So when he says nickel and he
- 31:57Speaker 4: starts talking about, you know, the importance.
- 31:59Speaker 2: Of is that guy a good blitzer?
- 32:01Speaker 4: You know? Is that guy you know can he do
- 32:03Speaker 4: different things?
- 32:04Speaker 2: Can he cover?
- 32:04Speaker 4: But can he do other things? That's sort of the
- 32:06Speaker 4: thing I was thinking about a little bit was Okay,
- 32:09Speaker 4: you know five foot eight Marcus Jones, five foot nine
- 32:12Speaker 4: Jonathan Jones, is that really what he's looking for in
- 32:15Speaker 4: that spot?
- 32:16Speaker 6: Really really good discussion.
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Marty Mapu too, not necessarily in that role, but
- 32:20Speaker 3: just another guy who's been kind of, I don't want
- 32:23Speaker 3: to say miscast, but you haven't really found a home
- 32:25Speaker 3: for him yet. And he came out of nowhere last year.
- 32:27Speaker 3: That first game back played like the whole game, We're like,
- 32:29Speaker 3: where's this guy been? And I mean tapered off a
- 32:31Speaker 3: little bit. I don't, you know, but I wonder if
- 32:34Speaker 3: there's a different spot for him when we talk about
- 32:36Speaker 3: maybe linebacker position getting more mobile. When you look at
- 32:38Speaker 3: what they did in Tennessee. Yeah, just a lot of questions.
- 32:41Speaker 3: I mean that's the thing with Mike. He yes, he
- 32:44Speaker 3: played under Belichick here, never really coached under Belichick, worked
- 32:46Speaker 3: a lot with Romeo Crenell and Dean Ps and guys
- 32:49Speaker 3: off of that tree. Still kind of did his own
- 32:52Speaker 3: thing in Tennessee. And I think that's like our question,
- 32:54Speaker 3: which we you know, we'd asked him a little bit
- 32:55Speaker 3: about it.
- 32:56Speaker 2: He didn't really get into it too much.
- 32:57Speaker 3: But how's it going to change?
- 32:59Speaker 2: How's it going to evolve?
- 32:59Speaker 3: And I think, as you said, that defense just seems
- 33:02Speaker 3: like it's a like a piece of clay right now,
- 33:04Speaker 3: and that they're gonna have to mold it into something different.
- 33:06Speaker 2: And I love to.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Take viewers and listeners inside, right, So just sort of
- 33:10Speaker 6: on the same topic, but different topic. One of the
- 33:13Speaker 6: thoughts I came into this combine with was will Verrabel
- 33:17Speaker 6: commit to Mike Owenhu at guard or tackle? So we
- 33:21Speaker 6: remember Bill Belichick, he's a guard, like that's where his
- 33:24Speaker 6: body type is. I do think there's some people in
- 33:27Speaker 6: the front office that say, oh, a win is not
- 33:31Speaker 6: bad at tackle, Like if you look at some of
- 33:33Speaker 6: the PFF numbers, you know, they're they're sort of stack
- 33:36Speaker 6: up pretty good at tackle. And I don't know if
- 33:38Speaker 6: that's actually true. Evan, you might be able to confirm that.
- 33:41Speaker 6: But so today I'm well, let me take a try,
- 33:44Speaker 6: you know, I mean, I'm used to this with Bill Belichick.
- 33:47Speaker 6: I mean, I know the answer is probably gonna be, Oh, Mike,
- 33:49Speaker 6: it's you know, it's February, just twenty to get the
- 33:53Speaker 6: best twenty fifth. I mean, next time we play a
- 33:56Speaker 6: game in September, let you know, let's see how Mike
- 33:59Speaker 6: might answer it. And that one got swatted down pretty good, right,
- 34:03Speaker 6: But but he did say. I had a good conversation
- 34:05Speaker 6: with Mike ah Win.
- 34:06Speaker 3: WHU.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Yeah, seems like he wants to, you know, we can
- 34:09Speaker 6: improve on some things and work on, you know, being
- 34:12Speaker 6: part of this. So it was just sort of interesting
- 34:15Speaker 6: right when we talk about how things are changing scheme wise,
- 34:18Speaker 6: media wise. But took a stab at that one.
- 34:21Speaker 4: Yeah, on Wny, I feel like the best thing for
- 34:24Speaker 4: him is to play him at guard, and right now,
- 34:27Speaker 4: I feel like he's been a decent right tackle for
- 34:30Speaker 4: what else they've had on the roster right and that's
- 34:32Speaker 4: not necessarily what's best for him, but it might have
- 34:35Speaker 4: been what was best for the Patriots in that moment
- 34:37Speaker 4: in time. But every time they kind of play some
- 34:40Speaker 4: of those higher level pass rushers, he's had some issues
- 34:43Speaker 4: playing outside. I remember a couple of years ago, Khalil
- 34:46Speaker 4: Mack just had a monster game with him playing at
- 34:48Speaker 4: right tackle, one of the worst games I've seen on
- 34:50Speaker 4: when who play as a Patriot. And I just feel
- 34:52Speaker 4: like he's better suited at guard. But like all these
- 34:55Speaker 4: conversations about roster and you know, brings me to the
- 34:58Speaker 4: next question, which is who has final say on this roster?
- 35:02Speaker 4: Because Rabel was asked point blank who has final say today?
- 35:06Speaker 4: And he kind of deflected on it, I felt like,
- 35:08Speaker 4: and he didn't really give a straight answer.
- 35:09Speaker 6: Definitely one one last thing on a winner before answering
- 35:13Speaker 6: that is the thought. My thought was, well, if he
- 35:15Speaker 6: would commit to him at tackle is Trey Smith? Now
- 35:18Speaker 6: you know you want to start, you want to start
- 35:20Speaker 6: getting quality starters in there. But I'm with you, Evan,
- 35:24Speaker 6: like I think guard guard would be the ideal scenario.
- 35:29Speaker 6: Who has final say? So, here's what I believe contractually, like,
- 35:34Speaker 6: what is a written on the paper? Elliott Wolf has
- 35:38Speaker 6: the final say. That is what he had signed on
- 35:42Speaker 6: this contract last year, is what I understand. However, Mike
- 35:47Speaker 6: Rabel being hired as coach, comes in and is probably
- 35:55Speaker 6: not going to take that job if he doesn't have
- 35:56Speaker 6: assurances that he's going to have players that he doesn't want, right,
- 36:02Speaker 6: And so I think there's a little bit of nuance
- 36:05Speaker 6: to this where if Elliott wanted to put his foot
- 36:08Speaker 6: down and said, no, you know, we're taking this guy
- 36:11Speaker 6: because I think he's the best and I don't care
- 36:13Speaker 6: that you don't want him, and this is the way
- 36:15Speaker 6: it's gonna be. I don't believe that that's gonna that
- 36:19Speaker 6: marriage would I don't think that's what Elliott would do.
- 36:21Speaker 6: But if that's what we're if we're gonna go by
- 36:23Speaker 6: the letter of the law like it, Elliott would probably
- 36:26Speaker 6: not be around much longer, would be my take. So
- 36:29Speaker 6: I think they'll work it out. Technically it's Elliott, but
- 36:32Speaker 6: I do believe it'll be significantly influenced by what Mike wants.
- 36:36Speaker 6: Does that make sense?
- 36:37Speaker 4: It makes sense?
- 36:38Speaker 3: Uh, last one for me, Mike, just you know, thoughts
- 36:40Speaker 3: on the draft. Here we are at the combine again
- 36:41Speaker 3: to look at some of these guys. I know at four,
- 36:44Speaker 3: said a couple of times at three. It felt like
- 36:45Speaker 3: last year pretty straightforward. We know they're probably gonna take
- 36:47Speaker 3: a quarterback. Four feels like, you know, there's a couple
- 36:49Speaker 3: guys Carter Hunter they got through. You'd probably slam dunk them.
- 36:52Speaker 3: But otherwise it gets to be kind of curious, not
- 36:56Speaker 3: sure which way can we trade down and maximize and
- 36:59Speaker 3: not overdraft any buddy. And it seems like those are
- 37:01Speaker 3: the conversations we're having this year.
- 37:02Speaker 6: Yeah, what I look for as a reporter, i'mlike, I
- 37:05Speaker 6: feel like Evan's studied a lot more than me. Mike,
- 37:07Speaker 6: you probably studied it a little bit more than me.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Is you just look for.
- 37:10Speaker 6: Consensus among people that have studied it, and I don't
- 37:14Speaker 6: sense it outside of Carter and Hunter. Yeah, and it
- 37:17Speaker 6: makes me think, quite honestly, is that winning that last
- 37:20Speaker 6: game really hurt this franchise? Just to be honest, Yeah,
- 37:24Speaker 6: you know, And so is there a way that maybe
- 37:27Speaker 6: between now in the draft, those quarterbacks start to how
- 37:31Speaker 6: we view them now changes and two of them end
- 37:35Speaker 6: up within the first three picks I think would be
- 37:38Speaker 6: the best scenario for the Patriots, and then you just
- 37:41Speaker 6: take the other guy, Carter Hunter, right, And so that
- 37:44Speaker 6: that's probably my big picture takeaway right now in the draft.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a tough one because you know, I think
- 37:50Speaker 4: the next two best prospects are probably Mason Graham and
- 37:53Speaker 4: Will Campbell. But both of those guys have some flaws
- 37:56Speaker 4: to their games that don't make them quite that high
- 37:59Speaker 4: level will prospect, you know, Like the name it always
- 38:02Speaker 4: gets thrown around to me with defensive tackles is like
- 38:04Speaker 4: Quinn Williams when he came out, he was a sure fired.
- 38:07Speaker 4: This guy is gonna, yeah, gonna be like a decade
- 38:10Speaker 4: long Hall of Fame level talent in the league. I
- 38:12Speaker 4: don't think Mason Graham quite is at that level, whereas
- 38:15Speaker 4: I don't think Campbell's quite at Jolt's level in terms
- 38:18Speaker 4: of the tackle position. So it is a little bit
- 38:20Speaker 4: of a down year. When we talked to Elliott Wolf tomorrow,
- 38:23Speaker 4: I'm hoping to ask him about that and say, you know,
- 38:25Speaker 4: do you feel the same way, because I think that's
- 38:27Speaker 4: what a lot of the experts are saying right now,
- 38:29Speaker 4: is like the four to twelve range is not a
- 38:32Speaker 4: great place to be in this year's draft. And that's,
- 38:34Speaker 4: of course where right where the Patriots are. So before
- 38:38Speaker 4: we let you go, I'm gonna put you a little
- 38:39Speaker 4: bit on the spot here. Is there anything we haven't
- 38:42Speaker 4: asked you, any any scoops, any micro res info that
- 38:45Speaker 4: you can share with us.
- 38:46Speaker 6: Well, so good. I love this on the draft. So
- 38:48Speaker 6: let's say let's say the two quarterbacks don't go, you know,
- 38:53Speaker 6: within the first three picks, and the team wants to
- 38:56Speaker 6: come up for it. I think given the whole discussion
- 38:59Speaker 6: we've had, the idea of moving back and getting another
- 39:01Speaker 6: one for next year, like I would, I would probably
- 39:04Speaker 6: endorse that today as a good move for the organization.
- 39:07Speaker 6: So that's sort of the big picture on that and
- 39:10Speaker 6: other stuff here in terms of scoops or not scoops,
- 39:15Speaker 6: but just stuff around around the Patriots trying to think
- 39:23Speaker 6: Alex Austen's won, like I want to hear about because
- 39:26Speaker 6: we saw that Jerem. I mean, this is we're going deep,
- 39:28Speaker 6: but we go you know, Jeremiah Farms signed the two
- 39:31Speaker 6: year as the exclusive rights free agent, which basically was
- 39:34Speaker 6: him giving up the restricted free agent year next year.
- 39:37Speaker 6: I want, I'm curious what Alex is going to do,
- 39:39Speaker 6: and I think there's probably some discussion there as to
- 39:41Speaker 6: how to handle that. Does he just want to take
- 39:44Speaker 6: this year as an exclusive rights free agent and roll
- 39:48Speaker 6: it into restricted free agency or could they somehow reach
- 39:51Speaker 6: something that maybe is in the middle where he's willing
- 39:54Speaker 6: to give up restricted free agency become unrestricted a couple
- 39:57Speaker 6: years from because I think fairly promising player.
- 40:00Speaker 2: It could be a.
- 40:00Speaker 3: Thought he came on at the end last year.
- 40:01Speaker 2: I mean a little bit of a decision to make.
- 40:03Speaker 3: Maybe with Jonathan Jones as a free agent, and you know,
- 40:05Speaker 3: Austin can maybe plan the outside a little bit.
- 40:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like we've been clamoring for size opposite Gonzales,
- 40:12Speaker 4: right because somebody that can actually play full time on
- 40:14Speaker 4: the perimeter. And I think he's done a nice job
- 40:16Speaker 4: when given the opportunities and when healthy and all that
- 40:19Speaker 4: kind of stuff. And you know, we're abel talked about
- 40:22Speaker 4: let's not go to the draft with all these needs,
- 40:24Speaker 4: and if they don't bring Austin back and they don't
- 40:26Speaker 4: bring Jonathan Jones back, now, all of a sudden, perimeter
- 40:29Speaker 4: corners is a pretty big need, and so I have
- 40:32Speaker 4: another need to fill, right, And so that that's a
- 40:35Speaker 4: tough one to be in. That's a good one.
- 40:36Speaker 6: And another thing that he said that I particularly liked
- 40:39Speaker 6: was on Sirius XM NFL Radio. We talked about last
- 40:43Speaker 6: year's draft class. And I think because outside of Drake,
- 40:46Speaker 6: you didn't get much from the draft class. Is that
- 40:48Speaker 6: fair to say? And I think we have a tendency,
- 40:51Speaker 6: or at least I do, to just write those players
- 40:53Speaker 6: off Jalen Polk, Caden Wallace, Javon Baker, Leyden Robinson probably
- 40:59Speaker 6: to a lesser let me gave you something, but well
- 41:02Speaker 6: he talked to He used the word revitalizing that draft class,
- 41:06Speaker 6: and I do think there's something to that, like did
- 41:08Speaker 6: they just draft bad players or was there something that happened,
- 41:11Speaker 6: and Vrabel talking about how he spoke to those players
- 41:15Speaker 6: and said, we hear about the sophomore slump, but let's
- 41:19Speaker 6: call this the freshman fifteen. Yeah, and you know, and
- 41:23Speaker 6: I thought that was really good because so much it's
- 41:25Speaker 6: not You don't just draft a player and that player
- 41:27Speaker 6: is great in your system. You draft them and develop them.
- 41:30Speaker 6: And so I think what he's talking about I believe
- 41:33Speaker 6: in and I want to see how they do it.
- 41:35Speaker 2: Absolutely great stuff.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Well, Mike Grease, thanks for joining us.
- 41:37Speaker 6: Mike, great to be here.
- 41:38Speaker 3: Guys. All right, Well, I think that's going to wrap
- 41:41Speaker 3: up day two. I guess these days are going to
- 41:43Speaker 3: start to blend together a little bit. But we got
- 41:45Speaker 3: cornerbacks safeties on tap tomorrow will finish out the defensive
- 41:48Speaker 3: side of the ball.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Anything you're looking forward tomorrow.
- 41:50Speaker 3: Not huge positions in need, but I think he always
- 41:52Speaker 3: could be in the market for a cornerback, right, Yeah.
- 41:55Speaker 3: I mean, like Traves Hunter is going to talk so
- 41:57Speaker 3: that that in itself is going to be worth the
- 41:59Speaker 3: price of admission.
- 42:00Speaker 2: And I mean, this is such a unique player.
- 42:02Speaker 4: And I just come back to what Elliott said about
- 42:04Speaker 4: the Patriots writing up two separate reports about him one
- 42:07Speaker 4: at corner at one receiver. I've never seen anything like
- 42:10Speaker 4: that or heard of anything like that before, so fascinated
- 42:14Speaker 4: to see when he gets to the podium.
- 42:16Speaker 2: What position does he want to play?
- 42:17Speaker 4: He's gonna get grilled about it, right, And does he
- 42:19Speaker 4: say I want to play both ways? Don't draft me
- 42:21Speaker 4: unless you're gonna play me both ways? Or is he
- 42:24Speaker 4: gonna favor one.
- 42:24Speaker 6: Position or the other?
- 42:25Speaker 3: Well, Travis Hunter Thursday coming up tomorrow. Of course, we'll
- 42:28Speaker 3: be back here with the podcast to get you guys
- 42:30Speaker 3: caught up with everything that goes down here at the
